This thread will (quickly) choose the topic for our daily discussion today, as well as have suggestions for future ones.

I don't want to do solely existing content discussions, whether jokers or consumables or game mechanics, so I have brainstorming topic options as well, and we can find other Balatro-themed things to talk about as well. Maybe we want to discuss the art or music. I'm sure we can figure out a good rhythm for getting topics everyone wants to talk about fairly as we go.

Here are topics/categories I have on hand for us to choose from:

Brainstorming (some removed because already done)

  • Non-normal card ranks/types (what if an 11 card existed? what if Jokers could exist as a playing card, or the Wizard, or a double-backed card?)
  • Hand levels and planets (a seemingly already closed and finished system - is there any way we can expand it?)
  • Special Enhancements/Seals/Editions with negative effects/"cursed" cards (lots of design space for downsides/difficulty levels)
  • Modifying existing content (changing numbers on jokers while in-game? Joker/consumable upgrades?)
  • Effects that change over time (each round, each discard, each played hand, randomly, etc., mostly Jokers?)
  • Crossovers (Scrabbalatro? BalatrUno?)
  • Skip Tags

Existing content (choose one or a coherent set and we discuss them from the most current experience, their history, our predictions for their future, etc.)

I've been thinking a bit to hand levels system and to 6+ cards hands (with the eventuality to play negative playing cards as extra cards in played hand), so I'd like to hear thoughts of others on that too.

I had a joker idea with stone cards and playing 6+ cards with stone but not other cards but then local posted the vampire joker

Also, the idea of non-standard playing cards (like 11 card, double-backed, etc...) is wild enough to pique my interest.

double backed is just both sides of the card has the pattern on the back of the card

negative cards could also not count toward hand size, so if you can hold 8 cards and you draw a negative as the last it would draw another

Powercrepping: not traditional powercrepp, but the sense that more simple mechanics are lacking, and the more jokers localthunk cranks out would have to be complex to be unique from the crowd, which means that you'll end up seeing more complex jokers than the more standard ones. Like when's the last time localthunk posted an ability that was just "+M for X"

we don't have to confirm there's a complexity/power creep problem before having the discussion. it's fine to just have it end up a quality check

topic: achievements? one thing i'm slightly worried about is that on full release certain achievements might be easier to get than intended, and after balancing patches they'll be the right difficulty, but anyone who already got the achievement is kinda stuck with it unless they use tools like SAM for Steam that might get your account banned.
