I would love to do a statistical study of this, but my impression, from having played Journey on PS3, Steam, and PS5 is that most players leaving are caused by netsplits. The game has to be very fussy about the players' computers being able to talk to one-another. If they fall out of contact, it shows each one the other leaving.

I downloaded Flow so I could play it again now that the flash version is tricky to find, and did not realize it uses gyro controls on the PS Vita.

It was distinctly less relaxing than I remember. So hard to aim well and dive at enemies without taking damage yourself.

The devs are not generally active and respond to questions like this here, and while I can't say for sure that there are no other jobby or professional game devs around in this community, this is not generally a place for exchanges with other game devs.

That said, if you're curious about TGC's games... If I'm not mistaken, Journey was created with Sony's PhyreEngine, and Sky is made with a custom inhouse engine.

Couldn't find much info online, but if you know the note placing of the instrument you should be able to transcribe scores for a kalimba specifically. You could find sheets of the OST online.

You will survive. You may lose some of your flight strength. It's not a huge problem, just annoying. The first time through the game you go very carefully to try (and usually fail) to avoid the baddies. By the third our fourth time you know their attack patterns and how to deal with the results if they do get you. Don't worry about it.

The best quality of someone you meet in Journey is that they wait for you if you're doing something they don't understand. I've met people who wanted me to come with them as they ran through the game as fast as possible. It was very annoying. I just sat down and let them go.

Can you tell us what creature you're talking about ? Is this related to the Steam achievement ?

Yeah, I think I know which one you're talking about. Do you remember the level with a tower in the middle, where you start at the bottom, and slowly make the water level rise up by examining images around the sides ? It's that one. But the creature doesn't appear until the level is almost full of water. Easiest way to find it is to let the water rise all the way near the top (don't step on the finishing tower), then just to swim around examining the tower and all the storeys of it. To get the achievement, hoot at the creature as if it's another player.

Back in 2004 some members of the soon to be thatgamecompany, and a few other students created a co-op puzzle called Dyadin, I thought it had been lost to the ravages of time, but along with ‎ChristianKingFu, we found an installer that still works!
I'm glad to see honking between players was very much a feature as it is so loved in Journey and Sky.

I see a lot of community managers in the employee list, some console specific devs, also some people that have a different company name in their title, so that list might not be all up to date

however I also see a lot of concept artists. if they have a second game in active development, while also maintaining Sky, then 182 sounds like a reasonable number

Edit: Not to mention, TGC is also currently working on the Two Embers animation.

The nicknames on the final page of Journey are whatever names the service you're using has. So if you're playing on Steam, those are Steam account names. If you're playing on PlayStation, those are PlayStation Network names. You can look up people with those names and try to send them a message.

in playstation 3 those names would appear in friends -> players met menu as soon as the screen finished showing them. for easier contact
playstation 4 does not have this
on epic games there's no chatting so you could try searching users and contacting them on linked platforms. but also that platform does not work properly because you can meet people but never actually are able to connect depending on your internet network setup
steam is the only one where you can easily find people profiles through a parser website that you put your save.bin file in. also has introduced the failure to display characters that the game font does not have mapped
and lastly ios game center has a recently played with but there's no way to contact strangers unless they show their email on the profile

There are a lot of little details in Journey I wish made it into Sky, like dust and debris building on the scarf and clothes that you could call to clear off.

Definitely something I'll be looking back on for a while- I've always wanted to know where those little spots were! A shame we couldn't reach that last one.

Journey seem interesting but what is it really about

Overall, the 'story' is very similar to Sky
You go on a journey through different realms until you reach the apex of the mountain. Sky is very much based on Journey, but expanded to be more of a multiplayer and live service experience.

Journey's experience, in contast, is much more... dense, immersive, artistic, minimalistic, and intense. It's like an interactive poem. It's a game that, in its time, has pioneered a new genre of 'games as art' indie games, and has since inspired many, many game devs to try their own hands at something out of the ordinary, and is as such also part of gaming history.

It's certainly worth a try, just for the experience of it.

The sands are so glittery, I had to like stand for a few seconds and look at its splendor.

Has Journey always been so dusty? I find myself always covered in sand, no matter how much my character shook themselves.

afaik multiplayer matchmaking can start anytime in the 2nd level (bridge) as soon as you step off the ledge in the beginning
but it depends on what other players are online and where they are exactly

The first time through the game you go through the initial stage and get to the map nexus, where once you've completed the game you can pick a map. Then you go to map 2 (incomplete long bridge) and can meet another player there, or any place after there.

aw man! it glitched! after I finished getting each segment (i checked, couldnt eat any more of it), bro stopped moving. tried seeing if i could feed it my segments (hoping then i could eat its regained segments and it would burst into pieces like normally), but it didnt work. I went up a level (no red thing to go down a level, i assume this was the last for this character) and it moved sorta while i was on the upper one (it more or less drifted, but that's still more than when i was on the same level), but froze once again when i went back to its level.

The space would give a reward to those that manage to all the floating scarfs and the memorial stones. Upon entering the space, your avatar is immediately dressed as a Wayfarer.

It's a pretty neat space

This just so happens to be that reward given to Wayfarers who complete the minigame; an ornament of an Ancestor to be used for decorating a personal space of your choice (be it rewarded or through purchase). Pay no heed to a stranger in the screenshot.

A little update on this post. I got the game and it was honestly really fun! Y'all were totally right, it's worth it. Honestly, I would say so, especially since it's a game that's meant to be replayed, but if you'd rather wait for it to be on sale again, that might be a better bet. I personally got Journey on sale (but that was during the promotion from when Sky was officially launched on PC)

Pretty much, yeah! The big difference between the two is that journey is much more singleplayer compared to sky, but you'll still occasionally match up with random people. I got the Journey Pack on PlayStation
Played 1 chapter of Flower so far and nearly whole Flow - kinda sad it's so short I loved the fact that you're playing new levels as your previous 'enemies', can't put it into words rn (my english is lacking) but I'm amazed by this concept and gives a great insight/dimension to the game
Also the "dragons" are so pretty (that's the word I came up with for the level 'bosses', idk how they're called)

I often just call them as "flow creatures" myself, but there's just something so beautiful and enchanting with their patterns. Like alien-like beings in water.

Still gotta be on your toes because as beautiful as they are, they nibble on those unaware of their surroundings

Thinking about picking up Journey some day but I am wondering if it has similar controls to Sky? And does it have a button to tell you the controller map? I do want to experience it but I fear the touch controls on iOS may screw me over. I'm mainly a controller player and well, I don't have a PlayStation ironically enough. (I do have a Gulikit King Kong controller however for mobile.)

I think at the beginning area, it will tell you how to move or use your camera, and of course fly. There's really not much controls in the game and it's pretty straightforward so you don't need to worry much. Journey's sorta limited compared to skycotl. I used an xbox controller and played the steam version of Journey.

Flower is on Steam and Playstation
Flow is on Playstation, and an earlier version is available for free on browser somewhere
Cloud is available for free with the Wayback Machine iirc

ps3, ps4 (crossbuy) for flow, flower and journey. flow and flower are available on the playstation vita and a stripped down version of flow is available on the playstation portable and lastly a prototype/thesis version of flow made in adobe flash is available for browsers that support it or as a windows executable of the standalone player that loads it

Closest I found of the warmachine as a figure was the mythical Journey figurine back in 2014 I think.

Maybe I can just sculpt one if I ever feel up for the challenge. An actual working light would be a dream but I was never good with electronics xAx

TGC never realized the merch potential for the warmachines.

If people in skycotl loved the krill to the point they've made so many krill-related merch, then they should've made warmachine and ancestor figurines alongside the travelers for Journey.

no, its the same game but a original version that was made to validate chen's thesis on dynamic difficulty adjustment in games.
consider it a bit like a demo

the proper full game is the playstation-only versions

playstation portable got a version that does some compromises due to the hardware, such as a smaller playfield

ps3, ps4, psvita

and psp which is a different version altogether but its the same game pretty much

additionally, ps3 is the original version but the dlc introduces severe bugs to the game unfortunately, and it already cannot keep up at 60 fps

ps4 has shader glitches if you have used it for a really long time (1h+)
and not sure about vita but in there you can use the device to tilt or a controller motion controls. the psp version controls with the gamepad instead of motion primarily, i think motion is optional there, not sure about vita maybe as well too

and if you buy it on ps4 you get it on the vita and ps3

also uh, there's a bug in ps4 where you can somehow have multiple players controlled by the same controller

this is very similar in concept to the infinite flight glitch in journey where your partner is yourself due to unstable network conditions

doing it cuz its their IP more likely, certainly, the contract was just tgc develops 3 games in exchange of getting some revenue(not too sure?) and sony gives them credit and visibility but also buys their IP/game
