If you're new to DnD I recommend taking a look at this.
I made my first character XD
Hello! I'm very new to DnD and I have been researching how to make a character, using official and non-official websites but I am beyond confused and I'm supposed to play with a couple of friends tomorrow. Is there anyone who could possibly help me make a character sheet and/or has helpful resources about it? I have some of the basics done but I'm really struggling
I am new here wanna join a group to play a campaign
š I'm struggling to find a game that fits my timezone......why is life so hard
Since you're short on time play with a pre-build. You can get premade character sheets here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
It's better to focus on matching availability over time zone.
If your group mates are all available to play, it doesn't matter if everone is in a different time zone.
Thank you for the tip!
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Show that you took the time to read the posting by mentioning aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
- Tip: Show that DM fun isn't an afterthought by asking what makes the game fun for them.
- Check out #looking-for-community to find community-style games like West Marches, one-shots, and more
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.

Fair enough...
Does ability scores and modefiers Increase when leveling up?
Haven't learned how level up works
oh big server much scary
hello guys
anyone knows what's an prepared spell?
Certain classes can prepare spells every day from their class spell list
Some classes are known spell casters so canāt change spells
Hi :]
So like,it always come with that spell prepared on the beginning of each campaign, and I can only use it once?
No, think of it like this. Every class has access to a huge pool of cards that comprise their spell list. Every class makes a deck out of their respective pools, and then every day decides a handful of cards to take with them to use (prepared spells). Every class is also limited by their level in what they can use from the pool, and by their stats+level in how big their hand can be.
Some classes like Clerics are known as āprepared casters,ā so their class pool is the same as their deck. Some classes like Wizards are ālearned casters,ā so while their pool is much larger, they get to customize their deck by choosing which spells they want to know (spells known). They still have to make a hand (spells prepared) each day though.
This section of the basic rules is also good reading on known spells vs prepared spells
Ohhhh so it's like a "Deck of Spells"
Somewhat. Letās say youāre a level 1 Cleric with 16 Wisdom. You have potential access to the full deck of Cleric spells of a level you can cast (in this case, all level 1 Cleric spells). Every long rest you can decide which Cleric spells you want to bring with you (your hand). The amount of spells you can bring is equal to your Wisdom Modifier + your Cleric level. In this case, you can prepare 3+1 = 4 Cleric spells. Again, since youāre level 1, all 4 must be level 1 Cleric spells. Once you gain access to higher level Cleric spells you could potentially prepare only higher level cleric spells if you wanted to.
You still have the extra limitation of spell slots which doesnāt fit neatly into my analogy. But basically it just means how many times you can actually cast the spells you have on hand for the day and which spells you can cast. Again using the Cleric example at level 1 you have 2 level 1 spell slots so you can cast spells 2 times. You could cast the same spell twice or use a different spell both times
Can a sorcerer take an oath? I'm in the process of making a character and I have a story idea where she takes an oath for her goddess. I know paladins can choose and oath and it effects their gameplay but for me it will be strictly for background story purposes. Is it allowed?
A guy is helping me make my character, thanks
Absolutely! Paladin oaths are a bit different as you said since theyāre both a narrative and a mechanical choice, but nothing prevents a non-Paladin from sticking to some tenets purely for flavor
That's great then! Thank you for your reply <3
I have made characters twice for some games with my friends but we never played i would like to join a game i am very interested in joining to play dnd with people. If someone has an open game and slot can u tell me
So I've watch a lot of homebrew dnd but I've not seen how they make a character, the few things ik is that your stats affect your dice rolls and you write your characters background. Do you as the player roll for your stats or is it the dms rolls?
Since it's "homebrew", the groups you're watching might be doing things that are different than the rules-as-written (RAW) in the books. But in general, yeah, your stats ("ability scores") affect almost all of your dice rolls!
For background, there's a part of the sheet called "background" and you actually pick one from a list in the rules. But there's also the idea of a "backstory" which is more narrative than an actual game mechanic. Some groups lean more heavily into backstory than others.
For rolling for ability scores (stats), it'll depend on the group. Typically players roll them, but a DM can roll them, too. There are also other methods to get ability scores such as something called "point-buy". Either case, each group should decide how they want to do this before the game starts.
Hope that helps!
That's really useful ngl, but brotha you didn't need to spend your time to do all that, thanks tho. So with the background sheet, could you mix that with Backstory?
Like have your Backstory based on background?
Background - mechanical benefits associated with your character's past
Backstory - the actual things that happened during your character's past
These can and should be related
you definitely can incorporate your background into your backstory, like if you choose Acolyte... your backstory could be you were an orphan raised in a temple of a God/Goddess
Oooooh, fun! With a drow (dark elf) if it's allowed to be played, what type of background would they have? I'd think more of a darker background. I think that their religion worships chicks, I don't completely remember cuz I searched it up like a year ago.
Would they have to have more of a criminal element too? Because they're not liked in most parts
that would be up to you, not all Drow are bad, like the legendary hero Drizzt... and there are some Drow who worship Eilistraee, but if you want to go with an evil Lolth Worshipping Drow then yes you can have a criminal and a darker backstory/background
the thing with DnD, is the limits are your imagination... so roleplay and flavor things how you like it
I understand that, im just trying to get a feel for what i can run for this guy.My idea for this character is to make them leave the religion and become very skeptical of religion in general, not making him a good person either cuz they're wouldn't have a set of principles or morals, so he can have less on the emotional parts. Ima go talk about this guy in #character-discussion
Well I am new to DnD itself and just came here because one of my friends suggested me this. At first I kinda didn't think of it much but after seeing videos and more people telling me to try it. I kinda want to try it but I don't really know much about anything to be honest. I am not trying to be hardcore or anything just want to try it out. I don't really know how a charcter works out and spells, stats. Reminder that I am not playing this to be hardcore and I just wanna know the basics on how the stat and spell system works

Brotha I just watched critical roll lol, you'll figure it out
Critical Roll doesn't play D&D like 90% of the people who play it imo. All of them are professional actors as well as D&D veterans.
Personally, I think Deborah Ann Wohl's Relics and Rarities episodes are more educational as well as entertaining. She usually has 1 or 2 guests who are new to D&D and it's interesting to see how fast they catch on under her tutelage as well as others at the table encouraging them.
Tru but I think it helped with me learning some of the rules
any other new person wanna talk about characters and campaigns in PMs (message me)? if not all good, i just don't wanna flood a channel
I'd be down for that! @hoary quest
We also have channels dedicated for that. I you havenāt visited channels and roles yet, I recommend doing so to get a more personalized experience.

so i played dnd 4e once, i have plenty of tabletop experience not dnd tho
if i wanted to pick up some books, the core rules what else would i need to run a effective campaign
any bestiaries needed etc
The Free Rules should have everything you need to get started. Monsters are included in it.
Hello all. I have not played D&D in over 20 years and when I was playing, I was still new to it as I only played for maybe a year.
I remember that I enjoyed it and have played other RPG games since on PC or playstation. I am trying to get into it again and was hoping to find a campaign that would let me and my son join as he has expressed interest as well.
Any help is appreciated.

RIGHT But, presumably its not extensive
liek for example in savage worlds they have some stats for a few monsters but after that your left to fend for yourself
or am i wrong and the bestiary is massive in the free
The free 2024 and 2014 rules include 382 monsters. https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-partnered-content=f&filter-search=&filter-source=1&filter-source=148&filter-type=0&page=20
That seems like it should be enough!
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. The current edition, 5e, is pretty different than the edition that was popular 20 years ago (I think it was 3.5e?) haha.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend you and your son make characters as you go along for rules practice. Thereās some great digital tools to streamline the game and character creation process such as Dndbeyond.com. If you wanted to run a game for your son and perhaps a few others the Basic Rules have everything thatās strictly required, though I recommend picking up an Essentials Kit which often come with starter adventures. You may want to check out #dm-discussion for DMing tips as well. Otherwise, if you and your son want to hop into a game thereās many tools to do so. In this server thereās #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise a fellow user has made a guide to finding a game using as many resources as possible, which Iāll link in a second :)
Thank you
@glass cypress now that the 2024 Player's Handbook came out, I would pick that up. You can then use the 5e SRD for the rest of the rules for creating and running a game. The physical books for DMG should come out in Dec and MM out next year in Feb.
Iāve never played a game of DND and would like to find someone to play with. Where can I find people to play with?
i think it's down here : https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
i was searching too
but i'm not sure
ok
i'm a bit lost ._. there is too much
What are you lost on?
i'm new++
and feels like nothing is for me
but i'm sure i'll find my way somewhere
u know it's like when u enter a room filled with 1M people in it and you can see their aura, the more knowledge they have, the bigger it is, and the more it weighs š
but i'll check this first
Well youāve come to 1 of the 2 right channels to ask for newbie help! I would also check out #learn-to-play which has a bunch of newbie resources. The most important one is the free basic rules which contain everything you need to learn the game (itās also linked in this channelās pins).
I recommend reading through the basic rules at your own pace, but donāt worry about memorizing everything. Just be familiar with the rules on character creation, combat, and skill checks. For further understanding I recommend making a character as you go along, as well as watching the Handbooker Helper series linked in this channelās pins.
And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here
creating a character is ok but about the class u don't know what u will become?
You get to choose what class you want to play
i think it's cool to start as a new adventurer because i personally don't know much about D&D universe, just some of the basics, but i'll discover everything with a group, as if i live it
ok š
Typically choosing your class is the 1st or 2nd step of the character creation process, as itās the most mechanically important part of your character
As an artificer, when replicating a magic item, do you just... Get it?
Making a new character and I'm not sure how the logistics of picking magic items would work?
You need to have a nonmagical copy of the item (ie a jug or the base armor). But for something like boots, they don't really have a defined cost
So that can be something to discuss with the DM
So I was thinking ring and cloak of protection, gloves of the theif, and bag of holding... So I'd need just a cloak, ring, bag, and gloves?
Yeah probably
Yep. Though make sure you check how many infusions you can actually have active at a time vs how many you can know
Ok thanks! I'll coordinate with the dm about not starting off too broken and op but the entry level is double digits so I think that's enough at the moment
I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with spells for my wild-magic sorceress
You usually want one offensive spell and one defensive spell to start, as a Sorcerer.
As for Cantrips, one or two offensive options and the rest are safe utility picks.
two offense, one defense okay got it
dnd beyond is odd with its background choices, i just want my character to sorta be normal
What background do you imagine your character having?
What is avarage level needed to beat a dragon as 4 person party
That's gonna depends on the age of the dragon, among other things
That's more of a #dm-discussion topic but also highly contextually dependent on what kind of D&D game it is, what type of dragon, what the party composition is, what magical tools/abilities does the party have, etc.
oh thanks
The most basic is that she's a bearfolk who was pretty normal and had a normal existance till she ate that enchanged salmon and became a sorceress and she's now sort of on a pilgrimage to learn how to control her magic and to travel I suppose. I'm usually pretty good at this but given DnD is pretty new to me I'm a bit stumped
Maybe outlander?
Havent got that as an option on dnd beyond
What are the options you have there?
I'll also take this opportunity to point out that there aren't any official playable Bearfolk races, so continuing with this idea might make it much harder finding a game if you haven't already.
I got it from the book of ebon tides book
But I've got some more characters in the works, but getting through it all is kinda hard
Typically when making characters you want to use a campaign's setting, tone, and premise as the basis for building a character.
Hello everyone. I'm Cooper, I'm very new to D&D but have played RPG video games since Zelda OoT.
Find idea of joining one pretty terrifying
Hey guys, I am very new to dnd and trying to understand the rules. Could someone please help me with basic rules?

Keep in mind the Book of Ebon tides is 3rd party content instead of official content so it might be a bit harder to find a DM that accepts that specific character as is.
As for background if you own or have access to the Outlander background you could recreate it using DDBās homebrew creator (as long as you donāt publish it publicly to the site). You could also make a custom background using the custom background rules if you feel no official option fits your character
What part are you stuck on?
I am just really confuse how to start playing. Do I need to find a game first? Do I need to know all the rules before playing? How do I create a character?
Take a look at the introductory videos linked above, skim through the basic rules and learn how to put a character together for practice.
You donāt have to find a game first but if you feel comfortable doing so feel free to! Using this server thereās #find-a-game otherwise a fellow user has made a guide to finding both in-person and online games
You donāt have to know every single rule nor is it expected to have done so to start playing. However, it is recommended you read through the basic rules as much as possible as itāll take a lot of burden off of your group to teach you if you join already knowing your stuff. Donāt memorize, but be familiar with the rules regarding character creation, combat, and skill checks. Here is the link to the 2014 Basic Rules and the 2024 Free Rules. The 2024 rules should supplant the 2014 ones starting September 17th, but not every group will make the switch to the updated rules. I would just pick one to read through and find a group using that rule set. The first parts of both will cover character creation, and I recommend making one as you go through.
Thanks a lot.. this is really helpful
Can someone brake down how to calculate damage as a gm
As in monster attacks or another type of damage?
Npc and monsters
If it's an attack, the statblock will usually say something like 4 (1d6+2)
The first number is the average damage and the number in the parentheses is telling you what dice to roll if you choose to do that instead
Tysm
Any ability in a statblock should tell you how much damage it does
Is it a thing in dnd to cosplay ur char in the last session?
I saw that in other rpgs and found it cool
I don't think most groups do that, but some might
The only character idea I have in head is a steampunk type frog who has a Electric sniper. :).
That's so cool!
ty š
Draw the silly
Iāve had a group that did that yeah
Nice X3
Our clericās spiky park of the mace flew off accidentally and almost killed our dm⦠but apart from that it was pretty fun lmfao
That sounds insanely cool
Was it accidentally LOL
Fair point
i need help with backgrounds
It helps if you can provide context such as what you're ultimately wanting to accomplish, what you've done and understand so far, and what you're having trouble with.
I want to try 2024 dnd and how to design a character but im confused on background asi and origin feats in that
Hello completely new here and I was hoping someone could review my character sheet and stuff itās hard for me to understand
For starters it's still dnd 5e.
As for how the 2024 PHB differs from the 2014 version, your chosen background determines what ability scores get an increase instead of your chosen race/species.
Feel free to share it here or on #character-discussion
Well, could I make a backstory with the background even though i still dont quite know what I want for a class or race?
You could also just share the link to the dnd beyond sheet itself.
Oh my bad
No worries.
Canāt figure it out
Backstory and background are two distinct things.
Backstory explains where a character comes from, presents what their goals are, explains why they are active participants of the campaign, and explains why they need to work the party to do so.
Background provides additional skills and proficiences outside of your chosen class.
Is the character set to public?
Yes
i dont understand
Then you just share the link to character sheet like so: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/112305147
Backstory is narrative, background is mechanical.
ah gotcha
Well what is your favorite thing about dnd?
Looking at your character.
This is some newcomer feedback I would recommend.
Mechanically, Rogues need high dexterity to be able to use their abilities effectively. With a low dexterity, their weapon attacks will be less likely to hit and their Armor Class will be lower, thus easier to hit.
So you have two options.
- Make Dexterity your highest stat. Meaning you'll need to lower your score from your other abilities.
- Make a bard instead. Given charisma is your highest ability score and Bards excel with high charisma scores.
This Handbooker helper video can help.
- This is a good guide for Rogue builds: https://youtu.be/anybhrieUqg?si=oykboDI9SawWkMSb
- This is a good guide for Bard builds: https://youtu.be/zvlROPHLdec?si=8Fpo5vlQHn92YgYJ
Take a look at both and see which you would prefer.
I don't necessarily have a favorite.
For more details feel free to ask me in #dnd-discussion
Ok so I changed it moved stuff around so it all is about equal https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/132090149/S6bWFv
I may have missed a point somewhere I dunno
Better, but it seems you did something because can't really start with an 18 score at level 1. A +1 bonus from misc. source.
When setting your stats youll want to use standard array or point buy.
Oh ok gotcha
Do you guys know the benefits of when raging growing to huge size? ( barbarian path of the giant))
Increased options for grappling as I believe you can only grapple things that are up to one size larger than you. Grappling a creature makes its movement 0 until they break free
Also, pro/con depending how you look at it, you now take but a 15x15 space on a map rather than a 5x5 space
yo
Yurrrr

ok\
how do i play tho??
For finding a group to play with using this server thereās #find-a-game otherwise a fellow user has made a guide to finding both in-person and online games
So I wanna start dnd as a Druid of the harengon race⦠are there limitations to selecting races based on setting? Is there anywhere I can try playing online?
Hey guys, Iāve recently learned to play and want to make my own character. I want to select bearfolk as my race in the DnD website for character creation but it doesnāt pop up? So is that really a race or was it just an online thing ?
Bearfolk is an option from the Book of Ebon Tides, which is a 3rd Party sourcebook published on D&DBeyond as part of a partnership deal. Since itās not by WotC it is technically homebrew/unofficial content so youād likely have a harder time having that racial option approved by the average DM. If you wanted to get that option just for funsies youād need to purchase the book.
Enforcement of setting limitations are going to be dependent on DM. Some like to constrict the available races for many different reasons, but in my experience thatās uncommon and any restrictions should be explicitly advertised beforehand. Before joining a game itād be a good idea to ask the DM about any potential non-setting race you;d want to play.
As for playing online, within this server we have #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with.
Hey. Is there anyone willing to teach how to play dnd. Iāve used Yt. And honestly itās not been that helpful.
How much of the basic rules have you read, and what you tube videos cause some are terrible for learning the basics
Some of sherlock holmes and one shot questers entirely
Barely any. They honestly just confuse me
One shot questers was pretty helpful but not very detailed
And Sherlock was just straight up confusing
Like Iāve read the basics

Okay guys Iām decided between the Dragonborn and AARAKOCRA race, what are the pros and cons for both ?? Iām still new so I donāt know if this is super important or not
Racial choice doesnāt really have that much mechanical impact on your character outside of a few options. Aarakocra is one, actually, since flight is considered a strong ability. However, I think itād be more pertinent to consider which character appeals to you more narratively- do you want to be the dragon-person or the bird-person?
Okay thank you !

Heyo. Im making custom made character sheet and would like to get some second opinion. Someone feels like sharing theirs on dm? š
good morning, i recently started with this game, and of course a lot of doubts came to my mind while i checked the book, but one specific confuses me. When in the spell it says "criature objective", it means players too?
So a creature or object? Then yes, the spell can target a player character as they are a creature.
oh okay okay, thank youuuu
Hey i am new to Dnd and have no clue what or how to do anything i dont really understand the rules as they are writen can some one please explain them to me
Welcome! Whatās one specific rule you have questions about?
it think it is prosperity? i think i dont really understand it
Proficiency?
yes sorry
Proficiency basically represents the things youāve been trained in.
And because youāre trained, youāre more likely to be successful.
Hi
If a character is proficient with a longsword, for example, they add their proficiency bonus to attacks made while using a longsword.
Effectively: theyāre more likely to hit their target as a result.
Anyone else can still use a longsword, but without proficiency, they donāt add their proficiency bonus to the roll (so theyāre less likely to hit).
thank you so much
Your proficiency bonus is based entirely on your character level. At level 1, itās +2, and eventually goes to +6.
Hello! I'm gonna start playing a character in a campaign with fairly seasoned players recently. I've played once before but only for a short time! He's a rogue hadozee. In terms of roleplaying and performance I feel quite a bit at home there cuz I have some acting experience, it's moreso the mechanic side of things that's slightly daunting to me. I know I have movement, actions and bonus actions, Hadozee Resilience and dexterous feet, so I'm mainly just wondering if there are any other mechanics I should keep in mind.
He's currently level 1 but once I join this campaign he will be around level 6 to catch up with the rest.
A rogueās Sneak Attack is an important one to understand.
It lets you add extra damage once per turn if youāre using a ranged or finesse weapon.
He has a dagger, would that count as a finesse weapon?
Indeed it does
At level one, yes, but by level six it goes up to 3d6.
Oh.. dang that's BIG damage
So could I for example, start my turn, do a regular attack as a bonus action and then do my sneak attack as an action?
Sneak attack applies when you hit with another attack. Itās not technically an attack of its own.
You can also take a bonus action only when a rule says you can, so youād need some other means to make an attack as a bonus action to do so.
Ah that makes sense, thank you!
Two-Weapon Fighting, for example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
The other important requirement, though, is that you need one of these two things:
Either you need to have advantage on the attack
Or one of your allies needs to be next to the target
(Technically an enemy of your target, which is most commonly one of your allies.)
So basically sneak attack can be applied when I just do my first attack or would it need to be a second attack after that?
Also are ther rules on DnD Beyond for fighting with just one dagger for example
You can apply it once per turn when you hit with a qualifying attack.
In theory if youāre able to make multiple attacks and miss with the first, that second attack is a good opportunity to still get that sneak attack damage in.
Thank you!
You could certainly fight with just a single dagger if you wanted.
But having two would let you use the Two-Weapon Fighting bonus action linked above.
Hello everyone!
Daggers can also be thrown, in which case having additional ones can help.
So since I already have one on my character sheet
But daggers are kind of low on the damage scale, too.
I can just add a 2nd one, identical to that correct?
How much damage do they do, cuz I have mine set at 1d6 but I'm not sure if that's correct.
Your starting equipment is typically determined by your class and background.
Rogue, Urchin.
Nice. So in each of those, you should see a section called starting equipment.
The rogueās should be right at the top and gives you a few A-B choices you can make.
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:
(a) a rapier or (b) a shortsword
(a) a shortbow and quiver of 20 arrows or (b) a shortsword
(a) a burglarās pack, (b) a dungeoneerās pack, or (c) an explorerās pack
Leather armor, two daggers, and thievesā tools
And then youād add whatever Urchin says, too.
Alrighty!
Equipment: A small knife, a map of the city you grew up in, a pet mouse, a token to remember your parents by, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp.
You can find the list of weapons here, btw:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#Weapons
You should see there that daggers do 1d4 damage.
Alrighty, so since I'll have him be using daggers instead of a shortsword or shortbow
He'd be doing 1d4
hi! im new to the game, ive played maybe three or four games, and at my school there's a club that im in that started yesterday, but that was just character creation
any tips on finding my way around the server and game?
Hi. I played Baldur's Gate 3 and fell in love with it. And decided to give DND a shot.
Hello
I watched a couple of dnd YouTubers and other dnd content and wanted to play it
You can certainly play D&D as the DM. It's usually easier to find players than it is to find a DM
I want to start a Dnd!
I've actually DMed more than I've played lol
Was it proper DnD at all, nope, did we have fun, yeah.
Though I would like to be able to play as a character at some point as well.

Can I play dnd as the dungeon master?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the gameās lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

š¤ i'm sick and new to this place...
you and me both man
I do hear and see a lot of dnd online but I haven't really played it in my life since we don't have it in my country
I want to start a Dnd!

Same here man
If youāre looking for a game to join please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels
I do know how to play from a friend that I had but I only know the basics of roleplay and dice rolling
Same here lol.
We can play together but we need a dm
Hi I'm new here I just created my character all I need to do now is learn how this game works
Welcome newbies! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Are there D&D sessions with just role playing, and without any mechanics?
Do people play Dungeons and Dragons online? Is that a thing?
I'm new to DnD and have never played it in my life, but I wanted to see if there was a way to play with people online instead of in-person.
Not really, D&D is the mechanical framework. If you wanted to play purely for RP youād probably want to seek a D&D-setting inspired RP forum/group
There might be sessions where all you do is talk/RP though. I've had a few
They just tend to be less common
Very much so! Typically online D&D uses a mix of these tools:
- A Digital Sheet Hoster such as D&DBeyond or roll20
- A Virtual Tabletop (VTT) like roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, or FoundryVTT
- A digital dice roller (commonly integrated in the previous 2)
- A communications app, such as Discord
Within this server you can find online games via #find-a-game
Ohh I see
Wait, so I can actually play DnD with real people online, and do all the roleplay and fun?
That may be what Iām looking for
Just be aware that even for RP heavy groups, that usually won't be every session
If you want a group that is 100% RP only, D&D may not be the best fit for you
Dang, are there RP discord channels out there?
Maybe. Not something I track
Hey I'm looking for a group would yall want to play

Yep!
Check #find-a-game for help getting a group together to play!

That's awesome!
Would you have any resources or ideas on where I can learn more about online DnD? I'd love to start playing soon.
#learn-to-play has some great resources for online play. Iād also check out the 4 tools I mentioned earlier (technically 3 since you have Discord already). In addition, D&DBeyond has this great article on online play
Thank you so much for your help!

Hey guys, how do I calculate dmg from attacks
each weapon or spell attack has an associated damage die
For example, a rapier is 1d6 piercing damage. To calculate the damage you would roll a single 6-sided die and that would be the damage you do
Ok Iāll share it here
Iām a farmer, druid, forest gnome with proffistionsy in animal handling, nature, perception, and survival, Iāve got 2 boomerangs that my dm is letting me use shillelagh with, then I have shape water, mold earth, mirror illusion, animal friendship, beast bond, good berry, and speak with animals and my stats are str: 12, dex: 15 con: 11, int: 14, wis: 19 cha: 14
Ooh thanks
I would read this section of the basic rules for more info:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#MakinganAttack
In general an attack will tell you the damage. For weapons, itās typically their damage die + your Strength or Dexterity modifier. Here is a table showing the base damage die for each weapon:

Hello everyone, I hope this is the correct way to introduce myself. I am very excited to start my journey in DnD but I'm finding it very hard to find people locally to play with as I live in a rural area. Is anyone interested in having a novice with a decent understanding of the game as a friend? I'd love to sit in on a game and learn or even participate if you would have me!

im new to d&d can someone teach me please
Me to please
#learn-to-play has some helpful stuff
Ok how do we do that
Please read the basic rules before finding a game just so you know some of the basics
Ok thank you
For @tulip kindle as well: Welcome newbies! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, itās most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). As for character sheets, the 5e character sheet can be found here, otherwise D&DBeyond is a great place for digital character making
It provides a good base of character options to work from
You can start with the free basic rules first though. If you want more options, the Players Handbook is a good one to invest in.
Is the 2024 one any better than 2014 or is it just diffrent stuff
I don't really understand the sourcebooks
Well I was asking to see which I should get
So the 2024 Players Handbook (PHB) is updating the rules a bit and I think in a good way, making things a bit more clear and usable without always having to get DM approval. The 2014 PHB is also good - but yes, reflect D&D 5th edition from back when it was first introduced. The 2014 materials can be used along with the 2024 updates.
Or both
Stick to the free basic rules
Oh ok
Understand the basics before you commit to spending money
Agree with Enoki here. Test things out with the free basic rules and if you want more, then yes I'd suggest the 2024 version over the 2014 version of the Players Handbook.
In my opinion itāll come down to a matter of preference. I recommend getting the 2024 since itās the newest and will be more compatible with future releases
Well I played like one campaign and I thought it was pretty fun so I considered it
I see
Sounds like 2024 is the way to go
What class did you play?
Sorcerer bc it looked the coolest
That's where the game is headed - and I generally think it's a good direction (obviously folks may have different opinions)
Very nice! Iād say look up the changes to the 2024 sorcerer to see if such changes appeal to you. In all likelihood if you like those changes youāll like the rest of the book
I'd rather people play what they're excited to play - because that usually translates into energy to learn the class!
We did class changes and so far I've played Barbarian fighter and Sorcerer
All got some pretty nice buffs in the new handbook
My character was a pretty righteous dude so I guess it didn't translate well
It says I have to pre-order and I get early access since I'm subscribed
Is there any reason I should wait
Only if you want to, the full release is on the 17th iirc
Thatās a somewhat incorrect stereotype
Is it gonna be on the app by then?
I believe so but itād be best to check with #ddb-support
Ok thank you @echo kelp @tropic forge @wheat crystal š

Where do i make a character?
You can start by reading the basic rules found for free on D&D Beyond. Then, you can find a PDF of a character sheet, and follow the rules to make a character. Alternatively, you can make a character using D&D Beyond's character maker.

hello
hello
Is dnd fun?
yeah
I like it
from my experience its fun getting into my character and almost dying from my stupid actions
not really
I mean read the basic rules and you should be fine
you can learn along the way
As long as your DM is willing to help you should be good

The links above can help, itās mostly just explaining the basics
Okay thank you
Are y'all going to be starting a session for newcomers?
Hii, newbie here. I have absolutely zero idea about anything in the world of dnd, anyone got any tips?
well the first catch is that there is not one "world" of D&D. but if you are looking for a good baseline the forgotten realms is the main world that dnd gets content published for
D&D is just a set of rules to play fantasy adventures. people run games in a lot of different fantasy worlds as a result
Does anyone have a good place to find adventurers League games / locations? I just moved to Cincinnati / Florence Kentucky area and don't know where to look
not familiar with that area but they're usually just hosted at local comic / hobby shops
you might be best off ringing up or just walking in and asking over the counter if they run or host and D&D games
places like that might also advertise on facebook or the web
Check out https://locator.wizards.com/ and #1050206572535623690. Those are probably a good place to start, in addition to the recommendations given.
its worth noting that there are many hobby shops that host D&D games but aren't affiliated with adventurer's league so yeah there are a few options
sup
i have a friend who likes dnd and iāve always wanted to play it and i just got new dice!
so i really want to start

ooh
hey
im new to d&d and im really interested in starting
but are sessions broken up over time
or are they all in one go
i dont have a ton of time on my hands is the problem
also ignore the fact it says im a dm i chose both for some odd reason
depends on if itās a oneshot or like an actual campaign. if itās a real campaign then usually itās split up over a long period of time, unless you wanna lock in and sit down for 13 hours
but to each their own tho, every group can do it differently
I would totally sit down for 13 hours straight and just play D&D
honestly same lol
Would be an interesting challenge š
WE NEWCOMERS NEED TO STICK TOGETHER
the issue with my group is that weāre all very chaotic and will go off topic or start drama and itās very hard to lock in, so maybe if we played for 13 hours weād actually be able to get shit done lol
In the last session I played with my group, I somehow managed to steer the conversation towards Fantasy High 3 different times
It was even fully on purpose.
frfr
also what do i need to know before i start dungeons and dragonsāing
See #learn-to-play and the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
This channel is to help folks get started with the game. If you wanna chat about D&D, then #dnd-discussion is the place, and for all topics NOT D&D, head to #non-dnd-topics!
hmmmmmm
ngl now i kinda wanna be a dm but not yet i wanna get a feel for the game first
if i make people hate me does that mean i did a good job
thatās a good idea, itās good to watch other people do it to try to learn from them
razorwing ur good
That depends on your group. I wouldn't want folks to be mad at me, but I would want their characters to be worried about their odds.
depends on how they're hating you

Gonna DM my first session ever on Monday, wish me luck yall
Don't sweat it if you get some of the rules wrong. Jot it down so you can look it up later. In the meantime, go with a rule that moves the story along.
is it a good idea to find a dm before making my character or no
Can someone help me put in looking for a dm and having a bit of trouble š I'm new but not to dnd
Itās best to learn how to build a character before finding a DM. Once you do, use the campaignās setting, tone, premise, and approved source books as the basis for building a character.
#find-a-game explains it but all you need to do is start typing /looking-for and then select the option that best fits what you're looking for that Discord gives you. The bot then gives you a form to fill out. Submit that and it creates a post in the specified channel and attaches a thread to it which you can use to update/correct things and chat with potential players/DMs.

Do most people commonly use DnDBeyond or Roll20?
You still need to pay for the books on roll20 same as dndbeyond
They had/have different uses.
DnDBeyond is 5e only. It's VTT (Virtual Taple Top) Maps is still in beta testing. But it does have the current up to date rules and content available, and as it is owned by WotC now, has better deals for physical and digital content. It's former main usage was having access to digital content and it's character sheets. It's VTT is new.
Roll20 is a more general VTT. It can host many, many different TTRPGs, but also is licensed to sell D&D content. It's rules can be a bit more out of date, but it's primary function is it's VTT.

You can find the Basic Rules for free.

The Player Handbook and Basic Rules overlap, but the Player Handbook has more content and is not free.
ah, my mistake
D&Dbeyond is a website that is linked up above, yep.
Has the basic rules and some extra content for free, and means to purchase more.

i just gotta wait until tmrw to ask if i can start a campain with people
D&D Beyond probably does the best job holding your hand through it if that is what you are looking for. However, other sites like Roll20 and Foundry are very popular as well @deep mauve
Letās keep things focussed on teaching people the core game rules and mechanics here in this channel
doesnt that count?
We have #dm-discussion for discussing how to run the game as a DM
Then please take it to the most appropriate channel
meet you there then Musta

thank you iāll be sure to check it out!
hello people new here DM/player plan on running or playing and with 2024 rules i think im finally converting from 2.5 edition
Awesome man! What made you decide to change for the 2024 rules and not the 2014 rules when they came out??
i was not interested in 5e
2.5 was what i knew and liked and was the most fun to play psionics and other features removed from D&D
Thatās fair. I get where youāre coming from. 5e did drastically simplify the d&D formula and relies on personal āflavorā and homebrew
Hello everyone
now with 2024 psionics returns and many many playable monsters
Hello Medusa!!
but with 5e they have some silly caps on features
if your a winged monster you can only fly up to 10 minutes max?
2.5 had a lot of liberty and imagination was the limit now there is a rule or limit on any feature a new or weak DM struggle with so i will find out when i can find a game or run a game in the 2024
Last I checked, there are plenty of winged creatures who can fly for more than 10 minutes
I believe he is referring to Aasimar as a playable race
There are also a number of winged races who can fly for more than 10 minutes š
Aasimar just don't have wings normally so theirs are temporary
I'm bored. Been thinking D&D mite be fun to try for a while. Anyone looking for new player. I'm not a grate at role playing but I figured I could play as a bear or war forge or a Frankenstein monster or something else that dosenot use many words. My only criterias are that I'm not playing with kids\teenagers and I kind of drift between jobs so i mite have a wired scheduled not being able to make it to every session.
lol
Hello new to dnd and wondering about lore for my character. Do ppl still live in Begger's Nest in Neverwinter after the Chasm? Created a backstory of a poor rogue and wondering if accurate.
you would not like my games i tend to run game with mystery investigation traps a ton of dialogue and combat when it hits the fan
your story can be what ever you like and the DM will possibly work on an edit to fit the world
You might want to seek out āone-shotsā (single session) or āplay-by-postā (asynchronous text-based) games as both accommodate shifty schedule. To look for games using this server, check in #find-a-game
As for your player options. Bear/Bearfolk arenāt official options but Warforged is. There isnāt a race super similar to frankensteinās monster but you could reflavor a bunch of races to fit the vibe, most likely the Reborn
This is a great question for #dnd-lore !
ty will think about ithat. know how i can find a group?
Got it thanks
well there sometimes are things like custom lineage and then if the DM allows you can be a frankenstein
For finding a group to play with using this server thereās #find-a-game otherwise a fellow user has made a guide to finding both in-person and online games
where do you find players for a semi home brew
Same as above.
I'm game . i don't know the base rules anyway so it makes no defrance to me. direct message me. a tad ocupide right now but will respond assap
Check out #looking-for-players and local Facebook groups.. plenty of people are hunting for players
@ashen ivy I didn't like AD&D 2nd ed so I moved on until 3rd ed came out ($20/corebook was too good of a deal to pass up). You would have loved 3rd ed since you are into psionics.
5th ed treats most psionics as spells so I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that psionics will come back.
If youād be willing, please name me when you link to the guide (since I didnāt include a byline in the doc itself). I would appreciate that!
Of course! Apologies for not naming you earlier, Iāll make sure to do so from now on :)
Sincerely appreciate the consideration!
hi, I saw paid looking for game chat. This might be a stupid question but for those games, do I have to pay or do I get paid? sry if I'm being dumb
You have to pay
eeeeeh oki oki thx
I'm news to dnd can someone help me out I want to play a dnd campaign for the first time but I have no friends with similar interests
Welcome!
Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Good evening/Morning if you are from down-under
I have a questionā¦.i took a look at the basic concepts (itās a lot to bite, ngl) and found this, my question isā¦we have 6 seconds to act or what? As for 6 seconds I cannot think of what to do, let alone speak it out x3
āRound: A round in D&D lasts for six in-game seconds. In a single round, each player character and monster will have taken one turn to act.ā

Itās in-game seconds, not real life seconds. Combat, or rather whenever initiative is rolled, helps to slow down the game to 6-second chunks.
im new and i dont know how to join a campaign, any advice
In game secondsā¦so in dnd time is slowed times down? Not counted like in irl times or it depends, am sorry for the silly questions
???
First time DM here, planning on doing a psychological horror one shot. I need advice on how this works. And some suggestions too!
Basically what the title says, I've been playing DnD for 8 months now, and I wanted to do a one shot inviting my friends who are DMs but I've got lots and LOTS of questions like:
⢠Do I need to include NPCs apart from the monster encounters in a one shot?
⢠How do the "saving throws" work? Which ones do I have to use in X scenario?
⢠Do I need to allow them to have a backstory? Can't I just tell them they have amnesia and can't remember anything? Lol
⢠Which creatures can I add?
Oh kind ones, I need guidance. I can explain more about my plot in detail if you need me to explain more.
Game time is separate from real world time.
That makes senseā¦thanks though ^~^, looking forward to a game or twoā¦just have to find the courage to join š«
The same way in Monopoly you zoom around a map and purchase properties in real-world seconds? It's the taking turns and actions available that matter.
Yes the game doesnāt run 1:1 to real time. How fast or slow the game moves is dependent on what the narrative requires. For example, you might cover a multi-week journey from one kingdom to the next over the span of an hour irl. Likewise, time might āslow-downā in order to facilitate things that may need more careful maneuvering such as combat, chasing a fleeing suspect, taking cover from a big bomb on a timer, etc
Im new and i want to have my first campaign but i dont know how to play it with people online

So time is a relative, got cha, thanks a lot, am guessing itās all dependant on group, dm and circumstances as you mentioned a multi week journey ^^
Yes it would be quite boring to have to have a multi week-month RP of traveling by cart haha
Donāt knowā¦there might be people down to it, who want to make like a one piece campaign x3, spanning all the thousands of episodes ^~^
NPCs to chat with: good to have, not essential.
Saving throws: check the Basic Rules for a guide there.
Backstories: it's a one-shot, it's optional. It might be nice to have them brew up a sentence about where they're from, how they got their class, and what roped them into the scenario.
Creatures, anything you like. But consider putting it through Kobold Fight Club to see how it rates against your party.
#dm-discussion for more.
Thatās true, though Iām not sure how many people would want to spent 3-4 hours of their week doing nothing but staring at narrative grass
Another dum dum question, is there such a thing as one night game? As am curious to play a game right now, but am unsure of having the dedication that my friends have, attending a game with a static (same people, same time), I want to dip my toe in a chill game before going to the serious ones spanning weeks and monthsā¦is there such a thing or dnd is indeed only multi week
Am so sorry for the dumb questions, itās all too new to me, having played only an introductory game at a con, all for 30 min >~<
Yes those are called āone-shotsā specifically
Ohā¦neatā¦and I guess I might be able to find them over #find-a-game ?
Yeah that channel is a great resource, just make sure to read the channel instructions carefully. Otherwise check the link I sent to BlazeNova. It has to a guide to finding games outside this server made by fellow user iamrazorwing
Hellow so im trying to learn how d&d works. I really want to learn how to play
im like 1/100 when it comes to the game
(knownothing basically)

Most games are generally a series of self contained adventures with a loose through line. Dropping in and out usually isn't a problem.
Think or something like Skyrim, there is a main plot but players often forget about it when they see a cool tower they want to explore.
Yeah but I donāt want to waste anyoneās time, like if they say they want a long and dedicated people, i cannot joint for one off >~<
Or I donāt know, you are the experts here
Depends on the table, but I'd bet about 60% of the time they're happy for people to drop in and drop out. Honestly I'd say that's preferable over someone who refuses to miss a session and holds up the scheduling.
You might ideally need to commit to two sessions in a row sometimes.
Hmmā¦how do I know if a dm is fine to join for one or two times in their campaign? As I see from looking for players that they post like every Sunday or Bi weekly and such
I donāt want to screw with the community
Look for one-shots or westmarch style games
Wetsmarch?
You just ask them š. Honestly I think "ask your DM" should be pinned to the top of every help channel.
Sorry mispeslled - Westmarch. These games are single session and more ad-hoc (no set group of players/dms)
You can find some D&D Discord servers that host these types of games - see #looking-for-community
I see I see
Thanks thanks a looot for the support, didnāt expect such a welcoming explanation to a complete dum dum
Not dumb - just learning (like we all did at one point)
^~^, still hope to find something this late
Youāll struggle to just drop into something so quick but good luck in your hunting
hi i've literally never touched dnd before where do i start
Start with #learn-to-play and checking out the free basic rules (see pinned messages here in the channel)
ok thx i'll go do that
Feel free to ask any specific questions you have here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide )
Hello! This is my first time joining this community and I was a bit unsure, because I never played dnd before. But, I am glad to see that I am not the only one and this is a beginner friendly community. ā¤ļø
I hope you enjoy playing it! Its so fun, especially the first time
Thank you so much! I love roleplaying and creating characters, so this is perfect. ā¤ļø
Dont get too attached ;-;
I will try. Thank you for the advice. š
That was my character's motto in my first campaign. She went down at least once in almost every combat situation.
But that could really be my failure in how I made her.
Oof, sounds like she survived a lot of them tho?
She did but after it all, she had some serious PTSD.
Understandable reaction
I've been slowly tweaking her build so I hope when I play her next, she'll do a lot better.
What are some like basic things I need so that I can play a game?

Should I do a custom backstory or just pick a standard one?
I think that's up to you and your table. For a short adventure or one-shot, I personally would be fine with using something pre-generated, but for a longer game, I'd want the character to feel more like mine (and a custom backstory would help, even if it doesn't get mined for plot ideas).
You might also not be expected to create much of a backstory anyway, depending on who you play with.
Well I wasn't going to write a huge backstreet just a couple of lines and that would be it. But what you said was helpful so thx
Hello everyone. I am relatively new to the game. Soon Iām gonna do my first game with a few friends and if it goes well Iāll see if I can play with others.
Hey everyone! I've only been into D&D for a few months, but I am D->PB nuts about it. I still haven't joined a party yet, but I've been creating a lot of variations of the same framework for a future Ranger Gloom Stalker build, and I wanted to be sure of something before I join any party as a Level 01 Ranger: When you choose the option for 150 GP - instead of the Starter Kit with all the weapons and items pre-selected - are you allowed to shop for whatever you can afford with that 150 GP budget before dropping into the world and joining a quest?
I selected no magical items or weapons - only common and proficient items, weapons, and tools. After double-checking the math I ended up with 2 gold, 4 silver, and 8 copper pieces. Is that within rules to start a new character with?
As a heads up, a majority of DMs will just have you use starting equipment instead of purchasing stuff with that system. It's a possibility, but I would wait and talk to your future DM about it instead. If they're anything like me they'll give you starting equipment, let you pick out a couple magic items, and probably have a bit of starting gold
That's fine too. I got a subscription to dndbeyond because I was rebuilding and deleting the same character over and over, but I started out with the plan of using the starter kit JIC and molded my character evolution with that as a baseline. The switch from 2014 to 2024 rules has been confusing because I'm not used to either set, but I want to build my characters using the 2024 rules to stay as up to date as possible.
Another question (though not so clinical, moreso comical): if I were to have a Cleric multi-classed with a Bard, would I be able to cast Spiritual Weapon and summon an "Axe"? But not like a wood chopping axe, I mean a guitar (or lute) shaped axe?
I've seen that term "flavor" used before, is that when players are describing the nuances of their clothing and armor and weapons?
Yep
Flavoring usually has nothing to do with mechanics and mostly to do with appearance or story
When you change the actual mechanics of something thatās typically called homebrew
Ah, okay, that's where I think I get the disconnect. I've gotten into watching Critical Role: The Mighty Nein, and I was trying to figure out how Nott got a hand crossbow to start with, and I just figured that if you took the flat gold option then you could shop for what you want before starting, as long as it fit the backstory you had created.
Their world is definitely a homebrew.
With certain DMās that is possible but some just prefer using the starting equipment
Fair, that makes it easy for everyone to start on a level playing field.
The main thing is if you want something is just ask your DM, they may give it to they may not lol
Yeah
Iām personally not opposed to my players getting the gold and asking to buy certain things, nothing magical of course
Of all the extra things I want for my ranger to have, I would definitely want him to have a fishing kit to start with. I figured it was a ranger-ish thing to do for himself to survive, but also IRL I like to go fishing.
I admit I went through the list with a fine-tooth comb and got every common free thing I could pick up, like a boomerang (which I can't even catch in real life), so maybe a DM wouldn't allow that starter list, haha! That would be an optimized inventory to start with, but most of my character juggling has been with abilities and proficiencies to see how they can best complement each other.
Is 10 gp too much to start with as a soldier class ??
Did you mean the Soldier background? There is no Soldier class.
But no, 10gp isnāt anything out of the ordinary.
Mb I meant fighter class lol
I think you mean, Fighter Class with a soldier/military background
Correct?
Hello other new players. I've currently found myself really interested in D&D, Starfinder as well all the many themed variations of it. I'm really into the character customization as well as the unique and funny moments that happen. I've decided to finally sit down and finally learn at least the basics of the game.
Hello Iām legally blind have been interested in the game forever now and have been not recently started playing it but what I can get isnāt enough and I wanna do more lol if someone could em ma and let me know how this servers charactors work and such as I already have thpughts in mind Iām just blind and need a scribe lol typing this alone was a pain
Hello Iāve known about D&D for years and started wanting to play it last year but have no idea how and do not know how to start so I found myself here

basic rules?
Yes. But you might find the videos helpful too.
Which videos
The introductory videos. The link is in the Dyno post.
ok
Template??
the character sheet they mean i think
you can find fillable pdfs online is you search dnd character sheet, you could also use dnd beyond which is a site that automates much of the character creation process
I thanks you
basically a game master right
or campiage
how do i become one
you need to makea campiage story line and host it with your friends
how do i do that
you learn the rules by reading the books or playing as a player in someone elses campaign, then you find people who would like to play the game that you run with the rules in the books, the dungeon masters job is to create and convey the world to your players and to inforce the rules when necessary
if you main goal is to run a game as a DM then i would say start with the Dungeon Masters Guide which a book that outlines much of the major info you will need
DMG isnāt needed to run a game
tbh id say start with the basic rules and flip through the phb even if you wanna be a dm just cus they contain a lot of the fundamentals of the game, then read the dmg
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure boom free starter adventure with loads of tips for running the game,
yeah but you cant just start doing that, you should at least know the basics by either reading the books or playing the game
Itās a self contained starter adventure with the basics in there
btw i was reading the basic rules thing, and it says that u get a equipment selection option when making ur char, but i didnt get one
is the book free?
Did you make it on dnd beyond
dnd beyond? what the heck, i download d&d online from steam
Dnd online is different to here, this is for the tabletop rpg not the computer game
its a website
wdym
yeah its free
wdym its a website
Well https://www.ddo.com/home it is
lol
it didnt show up on steam
But this server isnāt for the mmo
yeah this isnt a server for the video game its a board game
ive also never heard of it before dw
what the
board game??
its a ttrpg yeah
the game is based on a board game where you use dice and your imagination
commonly called a table top role playing game or a ttrpg
so its played irl
yeah
yeah or over online voice call
well it can be done online but its made for in person play
aight bye guys, im in the wrong place š
np lol, good luck
thanks
dnd is an in person game, doesnt matter what technology you have
and you could still participate in an online campaign with a phone
i have heard that dnd is noob friendly game but in last 4 days of searching for someone to play with i had no luck
You've tried in #looking-for-players and Roll20 and LFG on Reddit?
only on reddit
i just joined here
Take your time, no rush. Check out the new free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules). Have a chat, kick around some character ideas.
I typically find online and in person in facebook dnd groups and at local game/comic shops... in 4 campaigns now... 2 online and 2 in person, might want to try those places... worked for me
Hello
I am kinda new to the hole dnd thing whats is a good subclass for a cleric if i may ask?
most say Twilight, Grave and Peace cleric are the best, I'm personally a fan of the Order cleric.. but all subclasses really depend on how you want to play the game and can work.
guys I created my character sheet on roll20characters site, and when I finished it my attributes became lower than what I got. Like, my strength was 20, but here itās showing that itās 0
is it normal?
no clue. i use DnD Beyond to make my characters
I watched a video on some subclasses i liked the grave subclass but i dont really now how exactly it works
I spent almost 2 hours making that
were you making this character for a campaign? May want to ask your DM.
I guess yes?
Every subclass has its strengths and weaknesses. It really just comes down to what sort of flavor you want for your character, and what sort of playstyle interests you. But, if you want to have a deeper discussion about character creation, I would recommend posting it in #character-discussion since this channel is really only meant to help teach you the basic rules of how to play
Yeah, if your DM is the one using Roll20 for their campaign, they may have more insight on that site and how it works
Ok thanks
If youād like help with the Roll20 website, the #third-party channel may be the best place to ask.
For a new player what should i buy i have the dnd starter set dragons of stornwreck isle but what should i get next i was thinking the essentials kit what are your opinions
do you plan on playing in person or online?
In person preferably because its more fun
cool, dice, dice tray and a dnd beyond account is mostly what I'd say you need... minis for your characters could help... but for my in person games I'm the DM so I typically provide the rest
I buy the books and maps, my players bring me free food on game night... win win
Oh ok only have some figures and the starter set stormwreck isle thats it.
So i have dice and
A dnd beyond account
sounds like you got what you need, now just need to find a game. š
Thats the most impossible part nobody really wants a 14 year old in there campaigns
I alway get rejected
what about friends at school? when I was in school we'd meet up after school and play DnD or MtG
At 14, I think the best option is seeing if your school has a dnd club
I dont really have friends š i am kinda homeschooled
ah, I'd try your local game/comic book shop
I tried they dont want me to play i get rejected
My local library and game shop both have specific under 18s tables, so maybe check those
Say i am too young
where I live most game/comic shop host events
yeah sorry to read that, I know you want an in person experience but if that's not working I'd branch out into to looking for online games until then
Ok yea that could work but then i think i have to have a computer i sadly dont and can't afford it so would it work on phone?
you can play on phone
I live in serbia so there is only one shop in capital
Ok cool perfect
I live in south africa but not close to any game stores
How does the find a game thing work
to be honest I've never used it much so I can't tell you, but hopefully someone else here has
Ok i have to ask around then but thanks for all the helpfull information have a wonderful day!
you have a wonderful day also and good luck on finding a game!
Thanks!
Thanks i checked it out and i think i got a idea
can you help me with dnd beyond? Iām creating a character sheet and itās showing āpartnered contentā. If I allow Minecraft, will I be able to use items from there or something like that?
Sorry but do i need the foundry VVT to be able to play online
so with DnD Beyond, unless you own the sources or you have someone sharing the content you can't use it
Only if the group you play with requires it. Generally no, though.
You do not. There are a variety of VTTs available. Some groups just use voice or text over Discord.
Ok thanks for the helpful information
is it good to enable all Partnered Content or not?
Check with your dm, some will use partnered content, others wont
If you don't have a DM yet, your character is for practice, so your choices don't actually matter in a way. It's just getting you used to the process.
It really varies
The more often you look and the more places you look, the better your odds.
The more specific your needs, the longer it can take.
which hit point type is better, fixed or manual?
Neither is "better", but which you should use is a question to ask your DM.
whatās that?
DM stands for Dungeon Master
oh
Where each player controls a single character in the story, the DM controls everything else: the NPCs, the world itself, etc.
so itās the Game Master
Got it
Anyway, the DM has final say in any rules discussions, like which hit point type to use.
I seeā¦
Iāve watched some videos like that, but not about DnD
When you created your character, did you allow the 2 options on āuse prerequisitesā?
Feats and Multiclass Requirements
Best to just leave all the switches alone to start with.
Okay
Is there any problem on setting my character privacy to private? Does it affect the DM?
You'd have to assign your character to the DM's campaign before they'd be able to view the character.
Campaign Only would let any players in that campaign view it as well.

Do you have a specific question? If you're just looking for a starting point perhaps the videos above would help.
I think the videos might help. I'm looking for a new hobby, and when i was younger i was always interested in fantasy rpg in the woods with friends. my girlfriend told me to try D&D, but i dont know where to start hahaha.
I would suggest the new Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Take a look at the classes, species and backgrounds, try putting a character together.
Thankyou!
#learn-to-play might also be a good starting place!
Perfect, thank you!
#third-party would be where to talk about VTTs and troubleshooting them!
think there is a room for third party content
Oh sorry about this, and thank you!
so i was reading up about Aab'shagua but i'm confused on how they access the ethereal plane?
It just seems like they live their? but how exactly do they go there and travel it? is it through a portal? through gates in the etheral plane?
They're a homebrew creation, so I'm not sure if anyone will be able to assist with the specifics in this server!
oh
Hello Iām legally blind have been interested in the game forever now and have been not recently started playing it but what I can get isnāt enough and I wanna do more lol if someone could em ma and let me know how this servers charactors work and such as I already have thpughts in mind Iām just blind and need a scribe lol typing this alone was a pain
Welcome!
Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games. Being blind may make the game a little more difficult, but plenty of people with disabilities have fun with this game. I would be upfront about it when you apply to a game so your DM can work with you to make the game more enjoyable (i.e. braille character sheets, more tactile maps, aiding you with rolls, etc).
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
What are the characteristics of a human variant?
The rules for Variant Humans can be found on D&D beyond here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/species/1-human#VariantHuman
In the looking-for-dm channel what does the community game opt-in mean? (Specifically like, what is a community game vs a normal game)

okay š
Thanks, how are the physical appearance of the variant humans differ from normal humans?
They aren't
They're the same as normal humans, it's just an alternate feature set
Effectively, do you want to be a human with broad potential or a narrower specialization?
Oh thanks. I thought they are some kind of mutated humans.
Well thatās a flavour option if you discuss it with your DM
:p?
A "community game" is one where you play D&D with a community of people rather than 1 specific group every time. There might be a large group of players and several DMs, and you play with each other based on availability. So in a community game, each individual session will still have 1 DM and 4-6 players, but who that DM is and those other players are will change from week to week
I see, sounds difficult lol
Its one style of play. Its not for everyone, but it has its pros and cons. That's why its something you have to specifically mark whether you are interested in it or not
Makes sense
Hey, may I ask how looking for DM works? I'd assume by how quickly looking for players fills up that the player to dm ratio would mean that no one ever writes in it? Sorry I know someone else has asked a question recently but I have no clue
Not particularly. Typically DMs post when they are going to host a game and people just sign up for it if they are available for that day.
It works by having the bot make a post for you and showcasing what your looking for in a campaign.
Given that DMs are in higher demand than players, itās recommended for players to proactively reach out to Dungeon Masters. Though some will browse through looking for DM posts when forming a group.
Thank you. I will see if I can't get to a party in time that I may make one. Though, I'm assuming most asking for players are 18+, which makes sense but is unfortunate because since my school shut down their dnd club a year before I could join, I had to come here lol.
I'll figure something out. Have a good day š
: )
I would recommend looking into youth dnd programs. Tabletop stores and libraries tend to host those programs.
Alright. Will try that.
I have been having a really tough time finding a regular online D&D group accommodating to me in the pacific time zone (after work or on weekends). I have been searching and applying for campaigns on reddit for a week now, and got close to joining just one of many I applied to. I have also heard from someone I know that he spent a month looking for a group, and got lucky with the current group he's in.
Is this normal?
Would it better to just try and join a west-march style community, or keep rolling the dice with applications?
It can take a while so spread your net wide
lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
I find myself refreshing r/lfg sorting by new, several facebook groups, now I'm watching #looking-for-players; seems really difficult.
Try any of the online suggestions in the guide
Roll20 has a good search function iirc
I'll take a look, thanks.
Thank you for telling me sorry for slow response still reading what everyone has said lol

Virtual tabletops can open a whole new world for you. If you have a local game store, even better (more likely than not, they will have someone running D&D there.
like l said before dnd isnt popular where l live l cant find eny one to play with let alone a dm
It can be in any channel!
oh I see
why are my stats lower and some in negative numbers after I create my character? It has some numbers circled below
You likely have some stats below ten.
Those are abilty modifiers
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donāt have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Your ability modifiers are based directly on your ability scores.
Any ability score less than 10 will yield an ability modifier less than 0.
so if I have 7 on strength and the upper number is -2, it means that my total strength is 5?
No
a
It means when you make a Strength check, you subtract 2 from the roll.
Or when you attack with a melee weapon
Or when you make a Strength saving throw
no, it means that, if you have to roll for something strength based, you subtract 2
the stat you rolled determines another number, the second number affects your rolls using that stat.
ohh
I seeā¦
your ability score, which you might've rolled dice to get, determines your ability modifier, which actually changes your rolls in the game
so⦠I finished the sheet, what do I do? Try to find a game?
yeah pretty much. you've gotten practice for what making a character is like, you might need to change stuff or make an entirely new character when you find a game.
your DM might say you can't play as whatever species you chose, or the game you join already has whatever class you chose, so you might need to change that.
Is their a channel for someone to teach me how to DM or what the basics would be
