yea but would it?
Without any rules to say either way, that’s going to depend entirely on the DM to decide.
Alcohol is a poison, so it would make it non-alcoholic
Hello! so i just bought the D&D essentials kit to start getting into D&D. what are some other things i should buy to help start my adventures?
The essentials kit is enough to begin with :)
If you do want to pick up something else, the Player's Handbook is a good option as it gives more player options
i was all set up to start my first one shot campaign as a player and it was cancelled. where should i look for a new player friendly game.

Hello everyone I played D&D when I was younger and I think im interested in getting back into it.
I've seen One Shot campaigns and play by post options. As well as either virtual or irl tabletop options. And due to family life I definitely need to find the right game play or time slot to squeeze a game into.
I've started sending requests to PbP to see what it's like but I haven't had a response yet.
I currently have ddb and purchased the digital players handbook and various homebrew content. Just curious How your experiences have been going or any suggestions you may have.
Thanks
Hi I haven't played a Mach of dnd before but I would like to and learn more about dnd
Go on DND beyond and read the players handbook, theres a lot of good info there
Ok man thank you
You can find the free Basic Rules and a bunch of other helpful stater links here in the pinned messages.
I have 0 clue 0 experience 0 knowledge and i wanna get into dnd
There are a bunch of useful resources pinned in this channel
helloo i have never played dnd before and i would like to join a group of 13yos
Hellooo peoplee i have started getting into dnd since last summer but i have no idea or experiance in what im doing and i just want to have fun
This is probably not the best place to look as Discord's terms of service prohibit under 13s from using the platform
You'd be best off checking out if any local community centers or your school offer D&D clubs
i live in spain so cant do that
what, Spain bans clubs in school?
Not really the channel for that topic. Point stands that discord/D&D Beyond is not the place for under 14s to socialise, even over D&D, due to terms of service
The books are sooo expensive 😭😭
Luckily you don't need them to start playing, the basic rules are free
hi
Hi all, newb here :) Question: What would what would be better for a new player to get. The d&d starter or essentials kit?
Hmm - Are you planning to DM at all, or be a player?
I ask, because whilst the essential kit (in my opinion) is enough, I think it is a very good kit for a beginner DM with rules for running the game with 1 player
Either are good options as they are both designed for new players. If you are not in a massive hurry there is a third beginner set coming out in a few months
Thanks! I want to focus on playing and when I found a group who can show me the ropes maybe later occasional DM.
I saw the new starter set but I'm in Europe so it might take a while (oct. I read?)
The essentials kit comes with a 64 page booklet, that contains sidekicks (if you play a game with 1 DM/1 Player), as well as all the basic rules, and character creation.
Races included:
Dwarf
Human
Elf
Halfling
Classes:
Bard
Cleric
Fighter
Rogue
Wizard
As well as some spells
If I was to guess, the Starter set and Essentials kit has mostly the same rulebook (minus sidekicks, as these came with the essentials kit afaik).
So, either kit is fine depending on your budget :)
I think the Starter set comes with pre-made characters and doesn't have the character generation rules, but they are available in the free Basic Rules
Ahh! Then yeah. I think essentials would be better then if you want it all in one place
The essentials kit also comes with a 50% off discount code to use on DND Beyond for the players guide
It comes with the adventure (Dragon of Icespire Peak) that you can claim on DND Beyond too
Interesting. Thank you for helping me out :)
No problem :)
Have fun and feel free to ask any more questions 🙂
Anyone here have experience with Foundry VTT? If so would you recommend it to new users/players?
yeah
ive given the basic rules a read and whats the difference between the restrained and grappled condition, coz to me they are quite similar
One gives advantage/disadvantage
RAW says grapple doesnt do that
I have not used Foundry myself, but the primary turn off for my group is the cost. Its $50 to purchase it, and I believe that everyone in the party needs to have it, not just the DM. I find that the free alternatives like Roll20 and Owlbear work just fine, so I haven't bothered with a premium VTT yet
Players connect for free
The only thing grappled does is reduce a creatures speed to 0
Restrained imposes disadvantage on the creatures attacks, attacks against it have advantage, and they have disadvantage on dexterity saving
@jovial flicker @crude musk thanks
No prob, bromigo
The thing about foundry is you need a decent pc to run it for your players, a lot of the online GMs that came after c-19 dont have that
edit:changed DM to GM
Yeah the upfront cost is definitely the driving force of my research/questions, haha. I do know that only one member of the group needs to have a foundry license, so that's nice.
I will say that the specifics of using foundry goes beyond the scope of this channel and is something better suited to either #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion (or even better, asking on the Foundry discord)
@noble spire you should make a post in #750812887697588356 if you want to join a campaign.
One of my groups uses Foundry and I will admit, as a player it's amazing. The maps are beautiful, colorful and detailed and allow for lighting and music scapes so it can really boost the feeling of immersion that feels lacking in other options like Roll20 or Owlbear, etc.
Hello everyone
My partner is wanting to get into D&D. I am thinking as a newcomer one shots might be better to get his feet wet. Are there any specific threads or servers that would cater to one shots?
I am looking for a group of people to play D&D with. Also, I am very new to this.

so Im on d&d beyond and I finished my first character, can someone explain what a campgain is?
An adventure typically hinges on the successful completion of a quest, and can be as short as a single game session. Longer adventures might embroil players in great conflicts that require multiple game sessions to resolve. When strung together, these adventures form an ongoing campaign. A D&D campaign can include dozens of adventures and last for months or years.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/introduction#TheDungeonMaster
Much like the story mode of a video game is often called the "campaign mode" a D&D campaign is the continuous story you tell over the many sessions that you play the game
As opposed to what's called a One Shot, where the entire story typically takes place in a single session.
I know this is a longshot, but it's worth shooting my shot.
As someone who's already purchased the PHB Twice i'm wondering if anyone has a spare 50% off coupon laying around for the PHB on D&D Beyond.
I'm trying to setup my character using the app because it's so easy, but i'm limited using SRD.
If you don't want to buy the full book, you can buy just the options you need, like a single subclass.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too, in case you decide to get the rest later.
Or if you'd rather spend time than money, you can use the homebrew tools to recreate your book content for free. (For private use only, though; please don't publish it.)
I wasn't aware of that, I may go that route if that's the case.
Personally not looking to spend nearly full price again for a book I have two copies of so I can use it on my browser/mobile phone.
Yeah, if you just open up any book in the marketplace, you can scroll down to see the individual purchase options from that book.
You can find the PHB here:

@smoky adder what exactly are the "communities" referenced? Are they just different styles of D&D games?
communities are servers that offer D&D games en mass
If #750812887697588356 is like finding a group to play at the kitchen table, #looking-for-community is more like finding a community center or hobby shop where lots of games are run each week
hey 🙂
Hello!
Read the free basic rules (see pinned message here on the channel), watch some folks play D&D on a stream or YouTube, then maybe try making a character, then find a group to play with.
But step #1 to playing a game - even D&D - is to gain some familiarity with the rules.
I’m a D&D newbie who was introduced to crit role by my cousin. I have a few irl sessions under my belt but my dm is only in town for a few months out of the year. I’d like to try out some online games with D&D Beyond and Discord but I was wondering how important having a computer was? I have an iPad with the D&D Beyond app and Discord app. I can’t split screen with multiple apps on iOS so I’d probably have to do VC through Discord on my phone and use the D&D Beyond app on my tablet or vice versa. Is this a feasible solution?
Using the D&D Beyond app on a tablet can be done, but if your group is using visual aides like maps & creature tokens, you could run into issues.
Crud.. I didn’t think about that 😢
Can you use maps and creature tokens through the D&D Beyond website or do people usually do that with 3rd party tools like roll20?
D&D Beyond doesn't currently have those kinds of VTT capabilities, not like Roll20/Fantasy Grounds/etc
VTT?
Virtual Table Top
most VTTs are not optimized for mobile devices
Owlbear.rodeo is a VTT designed with mobile in mind
Weird question, but with VTT sites like roll20 and Fantasy Grounds on computer. Do players move their own character tokens on the map, or do we tell the DM where we’d like to move and they handle the moving of pieces on the map?
The reason I ask is because I’m quadriplegic and unable to use a traditional mouse, nor do I currently have a computer set up for me to use. I do however have a tablet can use for the D&D Beyond app and I have access to someone’s computer with a webcam just to log in to see the map and other players.
I’m trying to figure most of the ins and outs of playing online beforehand to avoid joining a session only to find out I’m unable to play and wasting everyone’s time
I mean, the DM certainly can move your tokens for you on most VTTs.
and like, if you explain your situation, only a total jerk of a DM wouldn't make accomodations
Can I write in my character sheet that I'll later pick a multiclass?
Just so it doesnt change starting hit points or anything
Ill begin as a fighter and then put 1 level on wizard
multiclassing doesn't change anything about starting.
you start with one level in one class, future levels don't change that.
So I can put Fighter/Wizard in the sheet and still be Level 1?
no, you just put fighter in. when you level up, you can then do wizard.
Ok ok
I'm kinda new to dnd but it's been a while since I've played sorry it was posted in a different channel
welcome
I’m very new to dnd I need to learn how to play I all ready figure out to make my character
same here
if anyone with a lot expirience can dm me it would be great
Welcome! There’s some helpful links in the pinned messages here that can get you started, but we’re happy to answer any specific questions you’ve got, too.
I am an absolute newb. I've gotten as far as creating a character @D&D online. I am trying to figure out how to get in a quick game online, but I don't want to be a DM. The amount of options is overwhelming... And many of the platforms have so many features I feel lost.
Sorry, D&D Beyond...
Thanks I appreciate your help!
i am completely new and i would like to get in to a game as a player but i am still confused how to ask to enter one if some else know how to ask to enter a game could you pls give me some instructions it would be very helpful thank you
I know this response is going to sound goofy, but the reality is you just ask. Just send someone a message and say "Hi, can I join your group?" or something like that. There is no mechanics to it, or sign up process or anything like that.
thank you so much for you help

hey i have 355 gold pieces left for a character what are some useful things to buy?
I am running a Lost Mine campaign with my friends and have all of my D&D books on Beyond available for them. A Barbarian in my party wants to path into the Totem Warrior subclass but it isn't available for him. Shouldn't he have access to it through the use of my book?
@mint folio have you shared your source books in the campaign?
Yes, they are all available for access through the campaign I'm hosting
Have you actually enabled content sharing? It's an option you need to select in the campaign.
Yeah, I'm looking at the page right now and it shows they are all shared except for the Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign adventure
is he building the character in the campaign? or does he intend to import it?
sorry if I'm asking stupid questions
It's been imported, but I did ask him to check and see if it appeared when he edited it through the campaign page. Unfortunately that didn't work.
No stupid questions, any help is very welcome
if it becomes an issue, why not have him delete the current character and make it again Within your campaign?
I'll ask him to try that, I'll report back if that doesn't work
hello am new
Which subclass options DOES your player see?
He only sees path of the berserker
Huh, that's the only one in the Basic Rules. The character sheet he's using has joined the campaign? And you have a Master subscription? And you have the Players Handbook purchased on D&D Beyond?
Yes to all of the above. I have the Master sub, the source book are all shared (I quadruple checked), he has imported and claimed the character sheet, and I have the Handbook.
Imported?
Could it be because he needs to create the character within the campaign as opposed to importing?
*imported as in joined the campaign link and added his character, he didn't create it on the campaign page
I asked him to try to make a replicate character on the campaign page and he said there is a lot of stuff available to him that wasn't before. So that must have been it.
Once you join the character though, sharing should kick in. I'd also suggest everyone check their Entitlements are in Sync (https://dndbeyond-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us/articles/7747224765588-How-to-Sync-Entitlements)
@static zealot I actually ended up disabling then re-enabling the content sharing, now he says it is available to him.
Thanks everyone for your time and help ❤️
Ahhh the old turn it off and back on again trick 😉 Never fails!
Tried and true!
Hi I am new to d&d and to the server. I hope I can become a better player and learn more stuff about d&d :D.
do you have to use your real name/use video chat to play online cuz i dont really feel safe putting my name and face on the internet(don't even use instagram or snapchat)
No, you don’t.
Different groups might have different expectations, of course, but neither of those things are required by the game itself.
ok cool i was looking at roll 20 and it said use first and last name to sign up and i real uncomfy
should i just put like first:billy last:oneshot or sum like that maybe
idk if that would work
I don’t know what Roll20’s requirements or privacy options are.
But if you don’t like them, Roll20 is not the only way to play.
ah ok well thanks for the help im trying it rn
Most online systems and tools do require real names for authentication validation purposes but usually you can use a nickname and the real identity stuff can be hidden from normal view.
to late real name to roll 20 is billy one shot
Hi im new to D&D and want to learn and play

Hello! I am very new to dnd, I love Fantasy things and thought I would give it a go but I am having a hard time with the character sheet it’s just a little confusing for me.
Anything in particular?
the the proficiency bonus thing I literally couldn’t figure that out for the life of me
If you are using a dnd beyond character sheet it will track your proficiency bonus for you. look next to your speed in the stats at the top of the page and it will show it. The general idea is that as you gain experience and levels, you become more proficient in certain areas. Sure a lot of things may get better, but some things that you are proficient in, will get a bonus as a way to highlight those skills improving.
Should I be using the website? Cause right now I am using the sheet
Oh I'd definitely recommend it especially if you are new. It makes life a LOT easier. Creating characters, tracking spells and inventory, and even rolling things like saves or damage are all built right in. and you can have several characters for free. (I think 6 but dont quote me).
you can even print your sheet out aqutomatically filled with all the stats. it's super mobile compatible too so if you play in person you can use it on a phone or tablet super easy.
I could go on but defiantly try it out and if you get stuck, ask around. Use their LFG forums and jump into a game. Many DMs are happy to take on new players. (less stuck in their ways 😉 )
Yeah, D&D Beyond will do all that math for you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters
Okay thank you!
But ultimately, your proficiency bonus is based purely on your character level. At level one, it’s a +2 bonus.
And then you add that amount to attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws you’re proficient in.
A Wisdom saving throw, for example, starts by adding your Wisdom modifier.
If you’re proficient in Wisdom saving throws, you’d also add your proficiency bonus.
And yeah, it’s six free. 👍🏻
heya, I am very new to dnd, (i just bought the essentials kit a few days ago) and finally have time to set up a character sheet, however I am slightly confused by the wording in the rulebook, relating to selecting race, i saw that with choosing a dwarf, my constitution score would increase by 2 so, if I rolled a constitution score of 13, would choosing a dwarf make my new constitution score 15? thank you for any help.
yes
You are correct, nailed it
Important thing to remember, ability score and ability modifier are different
yeah, modifer being the little + or - dependent on what score you rolled?
Yep
Your modifier is your score, minus 10, divided by 2, rounded down (confusing, I know)
sweet, thank you for the help, quite alot to learn, but i am very excited.
I will be DMing Lost Mine of Phandelver
first time as DM
kind of scared
any tips

There’s a good article here with tips for first-time DMs:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
I started Lost Mine recently and it seems really combat heavy
Also first encounter almost wiped the party
That's a common problem with encounters for first level PCs
I figured as much. My last campaign first encounter nearly did the same
@inner bone #adventures-spoilers-archive is a more appropriate place to discuss specific adventures, but with regards to Lost Mines, read the description of the first encounter carefully. There are details there that make the deadliness/difficulty less of a problem
Thanks!

anyone know how i can make character levels and class levels linked while using the xp progression system
What do you mean?
you know when you get a character level while using the xp system you have to manually allocate it to the class you re using say I'm a level 1 paladin and i gain 1 character level im still a level 1 paladin until i allocate my character level to my paladin class
Yes, that's intended because the system supports multiclassing
When you get enough XP, you can allocate your new level into any qualifying class
ik that's intended but if im using one class is there anything i can do so when i earn a character level it automatically levels up my class ?
There is no way to disable that
ok thanks
Hey, new here and hoping to play my first dnd campaign ever. I made a character on dnd beyond, if there's any advice you can give me to be prepared pls let me know. Nice to meet everyone :)
Hi everybody, so I was curious to know about one thing. When you want to join a campaign, do you go to looking for dm or players? I have troubles figuring out which opposite is which opposite.
Assuming you're a player...
You can post in #750812887697588356 (using the template pinned in the channel) if you want to let people know you're looking and have them contact you.
Or you can browse through #looking-for-players to see what games are available. If you see one you like, you can contact the user privately to ask about joining.
It's the reverse if you're a DM. 🔀
Oh I see now. Thank you. I thought I already joined. Thank you once again.
If you mean advice about your character, you can share a link to it in #character-discussion.
Otherwise, feel free to ask any specific questions you have.
@smoky adder specifically I'm looking for any information on things to do and not to do that will make the game run smoothly for everyone. I want to avoid as many newbie moments that ruin the fun as possible :3
Im planning to do a one shot for me and my friends to introduce them, and i suppose myself too, to dnd. Since I nor them are fluent with the rules and I’m kinda just looking to have a good time with them so they wanna keep playing, is it better to kinda ignore rules and make them up for the sake of not slowing down the game?
I’m typically one to really like rules heavy stuff but i dont wanna bog them down with loads of it
a square aoe of 15ft would go 5 feet in all directions right
shoot wrong channel sorry
Not a noob but I may as well be as I have not played since 1995. My Kids and Grandkids were interested in a game. I chose Lost mine of Phandelver. There is so much information on just that campaign. Now I just need to figure out where we will put the wave echo cave after I am done printing it for my trip next Summer. The rest of the game will be online so that should be fun
I'm curious, what do you think of the changes since 1995 now that we're in 5e?
It was our first game with the Grandkids and we all rolled horribly but i made bad rolls into good story. Our mage rolled a 3 to hit but my roll with the Goblin was also low so in the story the mage DID miss but it caught the attention of the Goblin which caused HIM to miss the target, allowing the elf to get just enough time to give the killing blow. My Son was the Elf and he rolled a crit.
I'm discovering it IS a little differant but we used to cross use other games in the past. I.E. the marvel RPG, highlander rules, and so on. Most of what I am using is a mish mash of 3.5 using the stories from the new stuff. It's really a learning experience for myself as I never DM's before and the DM I had in Korea was very good. We never used maps as he unrolled the story and kept track of all our character developement. After Lost mine of Phandelver I plan to get the Rick and Morty edition. With stranger things tying DnD to the show Vecna is sounding fun too.
I am new, looking to find a place to get started

@lyric fjord these pinned messages

In the space of 2 minutes you've read two articles, watched two YouTube videos, and the basic rules?
#1) Don’t worry about it. If you’ve got a good group, they’ll help you figure things out.
#2) Remember that it’s a cooperative game. Set others up for success, share the spotlight, and make sure everyone else is having fun with you.
#3) Make sure you understand your character’s specific abilities, based on their class, race, etc.
#4) Read the Basic Rules, particularly the sections on combat and (if needed) spellcasting.
#5) In combat, plan ahead for your turn. Be ready to go when it arrives.
#6) If you’re not sure on the best specific approach, start with an intent: e.g. “I see this other player is surrounded. How can I help them?” Then you can talk out your options with the group.
#7) Have fun!

I’m confused on the character prefernce settings in the dnd beyond character builder. I don’t know if I should change anything or not
Most of those choices will probably depend on your DM. They’d be the best person to ask.
If you don’t have a DM yet, it should be safe to just skip those for now.
okay, thanks
Oh also is there a character that does sacrifical magic or one that is good for necromany
Class I meant not character
Wizard has the School of Necromancy subclass.
oh ok thank you
Phantom Rogue can capture people’s souls.
I'm completely new and interested in the game, where should I learn or understand D and D?
Without physical help?
Welcome! There’s a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages that can get you started, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Hey y’all Brian btw total noob to the DND scene but How effective are monks really in a party that class just speaks to me but Ik review’s aren’t everything but I don’t ever see praises
Monks are neato i think some people think theyre weaker than other classes but i like monks theyre cool
Depends on who you ask lmao
If it sounds cool to you, then go for it. Have fun. 👍🏻
Def gonna commit to it 🤣
Many people multiclass into rogue as well so if full monk isnt doing it for you
Just created a new character a Chaotic good wood elf rogue
So I took the personality test thing and multiple times I got Chaotic neutral what kinda class would fit around that I def thought about a ronin type thing w a monk or samurai
I’m not to knowledgeable about the races just yet
Well when in DDB when you click on the alignment itll show you what races work with Chaotic neutral
Honestly man just do what you think is fun😂
Fs idk how they restrictions work bet lol
there's not really a racial alignment restriction
Alignments are much less restrictive these days. They're a bit more like suggestions/guidelines to anchor your character's morals and lifestyle beliefs
