Ok i think i made this overcomplicated
you get the spell book, you copy the spell in it, and you use a warlock slot to cast it that is correct
my fault, misunderstanding
i wanted to do like 3 levels in echo knight, 14`16 levels in warlock and one in wizard
would that work?
i was thinking to also add 2 levels of druid circle of spores but i don't think i will, i am not sure yet ( to get the necrotic melee dmg bonus
you would only be able to copy first level spells with that method
for my druid how many weapons can i have?
wdym how many? As many as you get from starting equipment
i get it
if you mean prof, it is:
how
oh ok i was confused becuase it looked like alot
do i send the pdf????
Clubs, daggers, darts, javelins, maces, quarterstaffs, scimitars, sickles, slings, spears
are the weapons you can use well
yea i just thought it was alot
just dm it to me and ill check if you want
oke
its normal, theyre all simple weapons
ok
yeah it only counts wizard
if yoy want a spellsword i can wholeheartedly reccomend eldritch knight
ty howver i wanted to focus around the echo knight
makes sense, dex or str?
probably dex
i will also get the dueling fighting style
are there other classes that i could dip 2 levels for this build?
i though to add the circle of spores drruid
bcs of the extra melee necrotic dmg
that one also needs druid levels to get better
you could do
echo knight/baldesinger or wsr magic
Morning peeps
can you use bladesinging with a hand crossbow ( and the archery fighting style as well?)
Thats a nice pfp is it your character in baldurs gate 3?
yeah
I really like it! I guess it shows how poor i am in character creatation
Do you use some mods for it too?
That make sense i recently started adding mods to my game, but honestly i hate modding even with vortex...
I have a couple of hair mods at least~ and dice mod but half of the installed dice mod doesnt work 😦
Yeah i avoid those mods...
Either they have vortex support or i dont even attempt to do it
or at least have requrments that have manual and other have conflicts
Modding is just a pain...
it is but that feeling when you finish and it works is divine
Or im getting too old and stupid for it ^^"
especially on skyrim xD
Naah i gave up on skyrim a long time ago ^^'
Cyberpunk mods worked nicely tho for most of the time
Hogwarts legacy...not so mutch
i think once i spent a week modding it just to spend a few days to create my character, play a few minutes and unninstalling it
yes
nice!
So far baldurs gate struck me which is ironic considering how i didn't like it
its one handed so yeah
The control, the interface was instant no for me
thats a shaem, i loved it
But now im at 150 hours and cant stop it
i still haven't finished act 3, when i reached it i wanted to create the character again so i deleted the saves and restarted xD
BUT there is one big problem...that's the fact that im stupid and a complicionist, and for me the game quickly becomes overwhelming because too mutch possibility too many things to do and i want to do it in order but there is no order and i really just got overwhellmed
I did that for the 3rd time now Lmao
i finished the game, realised i missed gales cat and rolled bakc atlesst 6 hours
His friend owo
oh yeah, i saw his cat on a roof randomly i spoke with it and flew away cuz i was not gale and then forgot about it
I wish adding different races would be easy but...i looked into it and instant noped out of it...
Even tho i wanted to play Aasimar and an undead necromancer
its surprising theres an interaction for it
they say “truly one of a kind”
raphael i think
idk for me it seems pretty easy, you just copy the pak file in mods folder then activate it in mod manager
#baldurs-gate-3-spoilers we shihld move thrre
and pray to work
Good point lets go there
y

Ok
(Also don’t post your age on the internet, this server has rules specifically against it.)
Can i srill get a benefit out of wizard subclass bladesong if i dual wield? ("It ends early if you are incapacitated, if you don medium or heavy armor or a shield, or if you use two hands to make an attack with a weapon. You can also dismiss the Bladesong at any time (no action required).")
I want to dualwield two hand crossbow.
It should still work.
I think you're probably alright, but #dnd-rules could say for sure.
Hello guys, is it difficult to start your very own campaign or is there any steps i need to follow when creating a campaign?
My friends and i wanna make one but we also dont even know when to start because we dont want it to feel overwhelming or too light of an adventure
I would consider starting off with a premade adventure book to get your hands dirty. But if you really want to make you own world there are a few things to consider: Pantheon (the gods and their relationships with other gods and the world), economy, history, and geology
It’s not easy, and can take 1 day up to multiple weeks to design a world for a campaign depending on detailed you want to be
@lapis topaz ^
I see okay, thank you @celest cedar
@lapis topaz I can help
Heya! Does anyone have a good full bestiary for me to fiddle around with, and look over monsters?
That would be appreciated greately :))
what are some things that you need to start dnd

Good place to start is reading the basic rules to get an idea of the game
Hello 👋.....
Then when you're feeling comfortable, you can begin searching for a game to play in. You could also learn to DM if that interests you. Really, there's no wrong way to start learning and playing.
do i need to bring anything to the session? meeting at a friends house
i already have a group of friends im gonna play with just wondering if i need to bring anything
Is this a good channel to ask for any beginner friendly campaigns that aren't full or?
Pens, paper, dice, snacks are all welcome 😄
ok
If you're not sure, you can also ask your friends what to bring.
This isn't the channel to find a campaign but you can check out #looking-for-players for open games or make a post for yourself in #find-a-game
I was confused by it tho cause when I used the command it seemed like it made a campaign post. I thought it was to help look for campaign needing players
@lapis topaz sent a dm..
@inland gale looking for players is for dms, looking for dms is for players
Read the instructions in #find-a-game then type in the prompt, you can make a post for yourself that will post in #looking-for-dm
I already did. I think I was just confused or used the wrong one
All good 😄 it can be a little confusing the first time
is anyone running a campaign at the moment for newcomers? I think I could do alright as a player, but have very limited understanding of the game so would need a forgiving GM 🫡
What does the "preferred way to play" mean in the form?
@elder pewter got it
Like, do they mean through vc/text etc?
Here, this should give you a starter of free monsters: https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-type=0&filter-search=&filter-cr-min=&filter-cr-max=&filter-armor-class-min=&filter-armor-class-max=&filter-average-hp-min=&filter-average-hp-max=&filter-is-legendary=&filter-is-mythic=&filter-has-lair=&filter-source=1&filter-partnered-content=f
Yes, like online, in-person, using discord? Things like that.
Okay thanks
Wait, I was selecting the multiple choice thing and it automatically submitted?? I didn't get to put anything in the rest 😭
If you missed anything, you can reply to the post and clarify
Ohh okay, thanks. I got it 😄
I'd like to do curse of strahd
You might be able to find that campaign here or on Roll20. It's popular so many DMs run it.
I’m trying to do the thing to help me find a dm but I don’t want to do it in the wrong channel and it won’t let me do it in the “looking for a dm” channel
Type /looking-for-dm here, it should work fine.
how i can find people to play? ( i mean in real life)
Check book stores, game shops, even local libraries.
Hey so im trying multiclassing for the first time in dnd beyond and i dont understand why my sorcerer multiclass doesnt have any spells at lvl 1
But my bard class does
and I should go to the library and ask if he wants to play?
We don't really recommend multiclassing for new to D&D folks. The rules for multiclassing can be found here:https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/customization-options#Multiclassing
Do note you need to meet prerequisites to multiclass
It's more a matter of asking if they offer any tabletop programming.
Check with the library and see if they have any D&D games/groups.
Or offer to run one (if that's what you want to do).
I have played dnd few years now and i decided to try multiclassinf
@fossil karma fast question, are you played with someone in real life or online?
Online but id like to play in real life
Also note that when multiclassing that your available spells lots follow the table under multiclassing. You don't get "extra" spell slots for being both a sorcerer and bard.
can i play dnd in real life alone? because i dont have friends
Oh alright
D&D is a socially collaborative storytelling RPG game. It's designed for 1 DM and 3-6 players normally.
Yes you can i have done that many times
There are some folks who have modified D&D rules to be played for 1-2 folks but it's not the way D&D was originally designed.
True
Of course dnd alone is harder because you have to be the player and also the dm
@jagged dirge but if you need help in the solo play i can help
I’d also add that in the same way friends don’t always make make for good roommates, they also don’t always make for good tabletop group mates.
You can definitely make friends with the dnd community and make new friends through playing games together.
Hello undyingnoob can u look into a problem I found
State your questions and folks here can help out
If it’s a sever issue, then you’ll want to bring it up to #moderator-support
Sent it in mod support story for sending it here
In those instances you can just say “speak with a moderator.”
Afterwards the mods will reply in a thread for you to go over things in more detail.
Let's stay on topic folks

Hiii nice to meet you all!
Hello

But i certainly did lack some rules !
I'm going to read the basic rules !
In anyway i thank you all for your help
What do i need to play with a group?
At least the free basic rules, character sheet (digital or paper), dice (digital or physical), and some effeort to read the rules and be an engaged and cooperative player.

Can different books be mixed together? Like, me and my players are playing the basic set dragon of Icespire Peak, one of them died and I allowed him to make a new character with all the options there are. He found the "echo knight" which seems to be from a book called explorers guide to Wilde Mount. Is that class usable in other stories/campaigns? Sorry if that's not the channel to ask for stuff like that
Do I need to make my own character before i start?
You can use subclasses from any book as long as it is ok with the DM yes
Thanks
Anything published by WOTC works with all their content, usually the only thing that might not mix is the theme, but the DM can make it work
Ahhh
Gotcha
And every attack done counts as an action, right? So attack plus extra Attack are 2 different actions?
if you have extra attack, all of the attacks are classified as one action
i have a dnd beyond question
Ohhh
How much should I know before I try to join a game?
Should? You should have read your chzaracters abilities and know what they do. But keep in mind you don´t need to know anything in my experience there is always a ruleslawyer willing to help
This partcular definition is from the fighter section, so always read what the book says for a particular class because not every class has extra attack
Extra Attack
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. The number of attacks increases to three when you reach 11th level in this class and to four when you reach 20th level in this class.
To simplify things, whenever the attack action ( 1 action) is taken, you can make two attacks.
In terms of basics, it's recommended to learn how combat works and how your character works, both mechanically and narratively.
Ok thank you.
If you want to mechanically build your character from the group up, then you'll want to learn the process for character creation.
Otherwise you can start with a premade character, which dnd beyond provides quite a few of those for free.

All classes and subclasses are usable across any adventure. Just keep in mind that if someone were to use an Artificer based off of Eberon, it is set in a different universe so some lore doesn’t carry over
But mechanically it’s sound
Hello
Correct, but you can only use extra attack if you attack with your first action. So if you take a healing potion or perform another action that doesn’t directly target or attack something, then extra attack isn’t available
Thanks
Hello! What’s going on
Nm, Just started my first campaign recently
Awesome man! Are you playing or DMing?
Found a great discord server and began playing, while learning DMing
Should I close my thread if I feel like I found a dm?
new to game game wondering how i join an online match?
Yep - check our #find-a-game (and read it carefully)
What books do you recommend for a complete noob? I’ve downloaded the ones recommended in the learn to play section but looking for ones in addition to those. I have a basic understanding from BG3 and watching critical role but looking to expand on that. Thanks!
You can get by on just the free Basic Rules while you're starting out and still learning. Once you're confident you want to invest more into this hobby, thats when I'd recommend buying the Players Handbook.
From there you should buy whatever additional books that have the player-character options that you want to use, such as those in Xanathar's Guide, Tasha's Cauldron, or Fizban's Treasury
Depends on the group. Some DMs take total noobs and have a "session zero" where they walk people through how to make characters, teach you game basics, walk you through the players handbook, etc etc. Essentially a crash course session where you also make your first character. Then if there's time, dm will start running a game that session, at the end, and hold your hand through it. Explain what you need to roll, list options for things you can do, sort of push you along until you get on your feet, show you how your character sheet works etc.
Then the next first session is the real session #1 where you're actually playing.
Thank you.
So you just have to ask essentially, if the group accepts total noobs, if they do a teaching session, etc etc.
alright I will.
Can someone recommend a free one-shot or short adventure for me to run as my first DM game? I just recently got the itch to try DMing again after I failed to find a group for a lasers and feelings hack and don't want to make a whole world just to see if I like the DM game. also am pretty broke and don't expect to buy DnD stuff for a while sense am already planning on geting a midi keyboard for my recent hobby of music production.
I always recommend the Breath of the Yellow Rose, its only 3.99 on DMs Guild
There's a little bit in the prologue that references something that happened in the previous adventure, but so long as you just skip that part it makes for an excellent first adventure for any table because of its equal balance of social, exploration and combat. This way you get a taste of almost everything D&D has to offer
Its a straightforward kidnapping investigation, where the party have to explore the city, talk with a bunch of NPCs to figure out where the victim has been taken, and by who
it ends with a cool dungeon crawl through a noble estate
Graph paper? That's what I use. Comes in various grid sizes. One sq is still 5ft. Map out whole areas.
It sounds like a good adventure, but my family's budget is tight, I usually only get a chance to buy things once a month on the first. in short even four bucks is too much on most days.
I can't say I remember any free adventures that I've run off the top of my head, but you can sift through the free adventures on DMs Guild by filtering for only free adventures
okay, thats a start. thanks!
Hello my friends.
New spell I made personaly: YEETILY-DEET I CAST SPELL DELETE!
I've settled on a adventure called The Oracle of Aegis Isle by Nick petrou, seems like a fun one, thanks again for the DMs Guild link
Hello does anyone know any D&D things u can join what r still open I’m fairly new but I have a good concept of the game
Good single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff.
Thanks for the reply, am currently using the Oracle of Aegis adventure but I'll check out these opitions when I get a chance.
In what way? Present your issues.
They don't know what race and class they want their character to be.
I don’t know what character in class I wanna make it them and I have zero idea on what I should make them to be and it’s frustrating me out. I’m not that limited.
Yep
I have Basic Rules (2014) / Player’s Handbook (2014) and Elemental Evil Player's Companion

marking or making? I would not recommend a player making their own weapon without a DM helping them. Unless it's completely non-magical and just flavor changes like making a longsword a katana
Using a particular race to define a character as an outcast is not recommended because that may not be the case in the campaign setting you'll find yourself in. It also runs the risk crossing some lines and veils that your group may have.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
These bot post above can help you out in the meantime.
Thank you I appreciate it I already made a post to look for players I am really excited I been wanting to make new friends plus play dnd

Btw y'all, new to this discord server but not the game. I've been needing to scratch my itch for dnd again recently (my group hasn't played in 6 months, I was having medical issues and people working overtime etc) so finally jumped in here and it's been great. Already talked with some super cool people, got to answer some questions and tell stories, I'm loving it. So thanks everyone for being so nice and open for conversation even though I just became active a day or so ago.
If you're wanting to play sooner than later, i'd recommed learning about D&D's adventureres league.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

hi all 🙂
i have a potentially stupid question.
a couple weeks ago i rolled my first character and we played a few sessions. started at level 3 and last session (yesterday) our DM granted us level 4.
since i'm not super familiar with all the rules, i clicked through the different options of leveling up my wizard a couple of times just to find out later that i am not stuck with a -5 constitution and 1hp max.
at creation i had a constitution of 13 and 17hp. (lost 6hp in a fight, though not permanently)
is there any way of fixin this in an easy way?
the backend of character management looks kind of complex to me and i really do not want to heck about with overrides and stuff. =/
Are you using D&D Beyond or something else to track your character?
dnd beyond. it felt easy 🙂
If you go through Manage Character and Levels, on the class page you can adjust your character's level. It will then unlock any new options you get at that level, like your ability score increase.
yes. that was one thing i got kind of stuck last night. i wanted to look at feats, but for some reason the drop down menu was empty. so i went with ability increases. increasing intelligence and wisdom by one didn't really do anything and that's the reason i just went through there like 4 or 5 times to actually see what the stats looked like afterwards
Your ability scores will only get a bigger bonus on even numbers, if that helps you.
i DID find that out. though being stuck with 1hp and -5 constitution wasn't quite worth it
What happened between character creation and now to reduce your Constitution score, may I ask?
that's exactly the problem. i don't know
in 5 sessions we had a single fight, i lost 6hp and nothing else happened. no status changes, no magics, nothing
again: i am super sure running the "level up"-thingy 4 or 5 times without actually changing level somehow screwed me over =/
Why don't you just change the numbers back?
as in: revert the character back to level 3 and do it over again, but only once?
As in go into the edit mode, put your ability scores back to the correct numbers. Check with your DM but there's a fairly short and notable list of effects that cause those to change. If it's just gone wrong because of an error all you're doing is correcting it.
i am a dumbutt 😦
for some reason i had a "other modifier" of "0" under constitution.
"0" is not "nothing", so it screwed everything up.
i'm back at 13 constitution and 22hp! =^.^=
thank you! 🙂
Creating a character for a 4-people party of Tomb of Annihilation. Any ideas on how to write a faith in certain deity (for a rogue, just a flavour)? Currently choosing from Loviathar, Shar and Musk (or Mask? The thief deity I mean)
#character-discussion would be a good place to ask
or #dnd-lore if you want more information about the Forgotten Realms deities
Oh, right. Thanks for an advice
👋 Howdy I'm an old grognard finding D&D again.. so much has changed 😅 and the new version is coming out next month I think? I played from 1990 until 2011 I think, memory hazy because my INT/WIS has gone down as I got older 😬
Welcome back!
There is indeed a new Player's Handbook coming out next month.
It's still the same edition, though (i.e. fifth edition), which started in 2014.
i read some previews of it.. some stuff was interesting. Not all of it (i'm not a fan of the art, tbh) but not enough to be like "this sucks" like some social media stuff I've seen
Couldn't disagree more on the art -- but that's a topic for another channel. 😅
yeah, i like more oldschool art. but the art I can ignore, the rules are what matters 😉
Anyway, if you want to jump into learning the current version, you can get started with the material in #learn-to-play.
Anything you learn there is largely still true for the book coming next month.
gotcha, I wasn't sure since it's like.. a new edition but not. I guess kinda like 3.0 -> 3.5
Even less of a shift than that.
neat, that was... an interesting time lol so funnily enough there doesn't seem to be groups locally, D&D isn't a thing at my local game store that I can tell.
@somber compass Do you have any questions relating to being a newcomer (or newreturner) to D&D?
not just yet. reading previews and stuff to get an idea of how it works now.
hello, i have always wanted to play dnd for the longest time but whenever i join a server the game is almost always played through text, which i don't like, so my question is can i find a game where we can play in a vc or smth?
Okay, well this channel is specifically for newcomers seeking help getting started
If you want to discuss the 2024 core rulebooks, this isn't really the place. #1026901431132885064 would be the channel to visit

oh okay sorry
hey so I am very new to dnd and I just wanna know, if I want to find a group as a player not as a DM, do I go through the Look for player tab or do I go through look for DM option instead?
No need to apologise, I was just giving you a heads up as to where you could finds what you're looking for
oh so either one works then? I just want to make sure that there isn't any misunderstanding is all haha
If you're a player looking for a DM you can

Thanks!
Thank you very much!
is wizard got 6 free spell at lvl 1?
Hey, I'm brand new to DnD and I've found a local group I can start with. I am just wondering if I should work on a character before my first game or not?
is that 6 free spell including cantrip or...
A level 1 wizard knows 3 cantrips and 6 1st-level spells.
Welcome! I'd recommend starting with a few loose ideas for different characters you might enjoy.
Learn how to create a character and have some concepts to bring to the table. Don't build a character without table input.
Then talk to your DM about which of those ideas might work best for that specific campaign.
Once you've got your choice, you can work together to add any finishing details.
noted
Thank you!!
Thank you!
Hi - if I wanted to play a session online with my friends, is there a way to go about it that lets you play similarily to in-person sessions for free?
?tag new online
That article goes over the basics of how to play online. Between the Basic Rules, digital dice rollers, and free virtual platforms like Owlbear Rodeo or Roll20, you don't need to spend any money to play. You'll just have fewer options for character creation and game content.
Hello yall
I am extremely new to dnd and i want somebody to check if this character sheet is ok or not
#character-discussion would be where to share it!
Ah aight sick :D
Can I get some context as to why some DMs refuse blood hunter class outright? I just learned about it existing this weekend. Is it just super over powered?
It's not official, which is a common enough restriction.
Oh neat ok. So it's like a more formally outlined and widely used homebrew. Makes sense
hey guys was just wondering how the find a game thing worked as i was looking for one but was confused as it wouldn't let me post the looking for /looking-for dm
That is exactly correct. The class was added to D&D Beyond as a cross-promotion with Critical Role before WOTC bought the site
In any channel where you are able to type, type /looking. You should see a list of options pop up; select the appropriate channel for where you want your ad to appear, then hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post in the channel you selected.
The #find-a-game channel has the full instructions for how to use those channels, but in short, you must use a command, and then the server bot will give you a form to fill out, and a post will be generated for you based on your answers to the form
Thanks both of you for the clarification.
I was thinking that it could be overwhelmingly op if you just stack the mutagen disadvantages. If I have two separate instances where I am simultaneously disadvantaged on wisdom throws? Do I have to roll 3 dice and take the worst of the three? Or does disadvantage not stack?
Advantage and Disadvantage never stack
Amazing
If multiple situations affect a roll and each one grants advantage or imposes disadvantage on it, you don't roll more than one additional d20. If two favorable situations grant advantage, for example, you still roll only one additional d20.
If circumstances cause a roll to have both advantage and disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20. This is true even if multiple circumstances impose disadvantage and only one grants advantage or vice versa. In such a situation, you have neither advantage nor disadvantage.
thank you
how long does it genrally take to get a response looking for a DM?
It really depends on who's looking and what they're looking for.
In general, you'll probably have more luck replying to DMs in #looking-for-players than waiting for DMs to reply to you.
Is there a ranged weapon warlock pact? I don't have all the books but I saw a reddit post mention longbow pact
There's no warlock subclasses that explicitly benefit ranged weapons, but the Pact of the Blade benefit at 3rd level can grant some bonuses to longbow usage if you build it to do so
Oh ok I think it would be cool fluff to have a bow and like pull the string back just to shoot out 2 eldritch blasts instead of arrow 😂
Thanks
If a warlock takes the Improved Pact Weapon invocation it allows them to conjure a long bow, short bow, light crossbow or heavy crossbow as their Pact Weapon for Pact of the Blade
When it comes to flavor, you could certainly do that with DM approval! Remember, flavor is anything that doesn't have mechanical benefit
Is that a feat in the PHB? I don't have an online copy that is linked to dndbeyond but I have a copy I can look up. If it's in Tasha's or something else I'll have to look somewhere else
Pact of the Blade is a pact boon, and Improved Pact Weapon is an Eldritch Invocation. Both are part of the base warlock class in the basic rules
hello i m new to this field i would like to know how much is the subscriptions to dnd beyond ? thank you in advance
The page on DDB gives the "starting at" prices, but I'm not sure how high they go: https://www.dndbeyond.com/store/subscribe
#ddb-support is probably the better channel to ask!
Can I dm you a screenshot of my DnD beyond invocation list? Even at lvl 18 it doesn't show improved pact weapon? Maybe I am dumb or blind but I can't see it lol
ok thank you
Have you taken the Pact of the Blade pact boon? That is a prerequisite for the invocation and the D&D Beyond Character Creator does not show you options you don’t qualify for
Yes I have pact of the blade enabled
Maybe there's a specific Patron that is required?
Ah I made a mistake. Improved Pact Weapon is in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
Ah shoot
No Invocations have a specific patron requirement
I suppose I could read up on it from a library book or google for now then. Thanks!
I know nothing but decided to try DND anyway lol-

ah thanks
Can someone explain to me ki focus? I have a level 2 monk at the moment and want to enhance my quarterstaff but I’m not entirely sure I understand the stuff I’ve read about it
You might be thinking of Pathfinder?
So I don’t think there is a Ki Focus feature. There is a feature called Focused Aim at 5th level for converting Ki into an Attack roll Bonus.
Do you mean Dedicated Weapon? This 2nd level feature is more of a method of letting you use more weapons than Monks regularly get.
so i have made a premade character idk what todo now im still so confused about
everything
If you have a character, and a baseline understanding of the rules, then you can look for a game to join
You will be the same level as everyone else you are playing with. In a new campaign, especially one for newer players, that will most likely be level 1. But If a DM says they want to start at a higher level, and you join that game, then your character will start at whatever level the DM says
So if you have an adventure like waterdeep dragon heist - could you then effectively turn an in person session into an online one?
ah- so just join anyone and the people their will help me??
Well, you need to find one that's looking for newcomers, but essentially yes.
You can't just join any random group.
There are lots of places you can look. This server has #looking-for-players and #looking-for-dm but there are other websites and discord servers out there. Or you can look for a group locally by asking at local game stores, school clubs, public libraries, or the like. The #find-a-game channel has more detailed guides and instructions you can read through
welcome
I would really like to find a campaign I could join...I have been in a few and they all seem to fall apart
I don't have a whole lot of experience but I am pretty adaptable
If you look at the message I wrote just above your hello, I wrote out some advice on how to find a D&D Game
Oh thank you so much

welcome. The bot post above has helpful links and resources to get you started. Once you've taken a quick look through the provided materials, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help
Playing the game requires reading the rules, I'm afraid
If you learn better through audio instead of reading, there are summary videos in the Quick Links section of the bot post above. You will, at some point, need to read at least a little bit of the rules, to gain a full understanding of how to play. Unfortunately, this is a very large server, and we have hundreds of new members join every single day, so its just not feasible to give private lessons to everyone.
There are resources to make learning and playing the game easier.
It's also important to understand that shifting the responsibility and workload to someone else is going to limit your group options.
Also check out the virtual weekends through the server's Events. They do occasionally feature learn-to-play sessions.
It’s much easier for us to help you if you ask more specific questions. It’s far easier to answer something like “what is a wisdom saving throw?” Or “How do I make an attack roll?” Than it is to answer something like “How do I play D&D?”
Nope.
Surprisingly enough there is a lot of stuff you can skip.
If you don’t want to learn about the rules and mechanics of magic, you can play barbarian, fighter, or monk.
There are also premade characters available so you can skip learning how to build a character.
You probably don’t need to watch all of them. Quite a few of them are focused on character customization options, like class and race, so if you know what interests you, you don’t have to watch the videos on the options you aren’t going to use. But if you’re still trying to decide what you want your character to be, then the overviews of each option will be helpful. And of course the videos on the basic rules and mechanics will be very helpful as well
At bare minimum you just need to learn how combat works and how your character works.
Even then there’s cheat sheets you can use so you don’t have to memorize everything.
Charisma is one of the 6 ability score in this game, yes. The classes that use Charisma the most are Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer, and Warlock
D&D has a lot of rules and features, and may take a bit to fully grasp. Learning new things isn't always instantaneous.
Probably not, unless you want to learn more about what a dungeon master is and how their role works
Learning D&D is a long process, but you don’t have to do it all in one sitting.
Finding a group to play with can take days or even weeks. No need to rush with learning the rules. Take your time and slowly go through everything so that you understand the actual content.
You're always "allowed" to play D&D. No one is forbidding you from it. Learning the rules simply helps thing go smoother and makes the expirience better for you and the people you are playing with
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you have to put in at least a little effort to learn things before joining a game. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
D&D is a very rules intensive game. If you try to play it before you learn the rules, then you're going to feel extremely lost about what to do or how to play. Which means either your party will have to spend the whole game explaining things to you, or all of you will be equally as lost. Neither situation will be any fun. So, learning at least the basics of the rules before you play is important
An account where?
Are you talking about a video game?
This server is mainly dedicated to the tabletop game.
The deck of many things is there anything that's extra like it? Tarot cards or runes, or playing cards, etc???
What do you mean exactly?
Like it brings a different angle, something different to the campaign, game
This is a server for the D&D table top game, specifically the 5th edition. The D&D video game is something completely different
This channel is for the basics of the game. You might get some answers by asking in #dnd-discussion!
What's the best way to learn rules? I know there's a lot of complicated systems like fall damage, all the dice rolls that go into attacks and other things of the sort, is there any advice for rules that I should prioritise learning or focus on over others? What's the best way to go about it?
Read the basic rules, not all of it and not in order, but just the parts that are most relevant

The chapters on making a character, using ability scores, and combat are the most immediately useful
Alright thanks
There's no single best way. The Basic Rules are pretty important, and Davyd mentioned the chapters you should probably know sooner than later. Reading them is a good idea. But there are explainer videos (like Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School) that can supplement reading the Basic Rules. The virtual weekends advertised in the server's Events have learn-to-play sessions, and sometimes you can find these sorts of sessions locally at a library, game club, or hobby shop.
I already have a group that I've played a handful of sessions with across a few campaigns, the only thing is many of those campaigns, if not all of them have been moderately to heavily homebrew, and had reworked or entirely new systems and settings. I know the very basics of rolling, initiative, and I know the bear minimum about character creation, though I'm about to join another one of their campaigns and this time the only homebrew aspect is the story itself, i also need to make a character soon, and while I had some ideas I don't know enough to produce a well made or effective character, if I ran some ideas past you could you lend your opinion?
We have #character-discussion for that!
Oh right thank you!

I'll have a look at that when I get a chance, thanks!
I just got into the idea of dnd after starting to play baldurs gate. I answered 2 posts on the looking for game channel but I’m curious on how often those games actually start
Depends on the DM.
Usually you have session 0 where you and other party members brainstorm ideas for characters, as well as any possible ideas for a background story. And also on that session you usually schedule when do you actually have session 1.
hellu. I'm back. 😅
The posts in the Looking-for channels are managed entirely by the server users who make the post. I don't think anyone oversees the actual games, other than just to make sure the recruitment posts aren't breaking any server rules. Finding a group to play with can be tough. You have to think of it like this: you're trying to find a group of 4-6 people who all want to play the same type of D&D game, who all have an opening in their schedule at the same time, and who can commit to that opening for sometimes up to a year or more. Its important to cast a wide net, and reach out to as many different groups as you can. You can always try looking in other servers or on other websites too
Got it thanks
By the power of grayskull! I have the power!
Someone mentioned that most campaigns are rarely beyond level 15. From all of your collective experiences, why is that the case? Poor planning mid combat leading to deaths? DMs or players quitting? Theoretically, a campaign could run on indefinitely or am I missing something? Seems op to have some stuff at level 20 but to have never gotten there or to rarely ever get beyond 15 seems weird
Assuming basic, homebrew-free gameplay and story telling.
its just hard to have one continuous story for 1-2 years, and have it keep everyone's interest that entire time. People get burnt out, life happens, or the story just reaches a natural conclusion
Only a handful of WotC modules go into the higher levels of play, so there aren't many official models for how to run closer to the "endgame." Plus, high-level parties have a lot of tools, many of which bypass or trivialize encounters. It is famously tough to balance for those levels. And getting to 20 takes a long time; sometimes folks just wanna do something different.
Oh ok I thought there was a method to scale the world up so that by level 20 you're less of a God amongst peasants 🤔

I saw a campaign recruiting some people starting at level 10 and that had been 1 of like 400 of those LFP posts
There's helpful videos and information here. Have you downloaded dndbeyonds app?
It's a good start for some free rules
You don't have to download anything. The resources above give you plenty of info to work through. No rush to absorb it all at once, of course. And do ask questions if you have 'em!
No. What is Dnd beyond?
Yeah, it's a bit harder to balance encounters at higher levels, but you can absolutely still challenge high level (Tier 4) characters.
With bounded accuracy (a design rule for D&D 5E that prevents AC from going really high), things that hurt typically still hurt even at high levels. Even something like a fireball can still be a threat. Very few PCs can look at 5 or 10 fireballs being dropped on them and not sweat it. (I had a DM who had an encounter with a bunch of Flameskulls for level 20 characters. They're only CR 4, but if enough get together, it's a real problem.)
Start with the kinks here if you're super new! DnD beyond helps with character building and providing some a rule book. However, the videos and links here should be viewed first as they ease you into it much better than straight rule book contnet
Excelent. Thanks for the help. I hope to learn the system and create a decent character.
The world does not scale around you. When you become stronger, there are stronger monsters for you to face, but a normal goblin will be exactly the same strength it was when you fought it at level 1. Monsters do not become stronger or weaker based on you. You just fight stronger or weaker monsters based on what level you are
I am super new, yes. And i will. I'll be back on i finish reading and seeing the videos.
There is a channel on here for nearly everything you might need to ask about! So feel free to ask "dumb" questions.... I sure do and these fellas treat me with respect even if I have a case of "asks the same thing 4 times bc I forgot"
So for higher tiers a goblin encounter would scale from like 5 gobbos to clearing out a nest with dozens, a few shamans and some ogres/hobs? Makes sense. That or like straight up mythic beast killing
As you become higher level, you might end of fighting more goblinoids or stronger goblinoids, but you will eventually reach a point where they just can’t challenge you anymore
It was peaceful, until the goblin nation attacked! 😂
Hello, i'm gonna be very honest, i am here because of social media, it looks hella fun and everyone keeps telling me to try it but be brutally honest, how different are the sessions compared to the actual casual games and how welcoming is the game to "young players"

You definitely need to temper your expectations compared to what you see online. Most of those games are played by professionals, like Critical Role or Role 20. They are professional actors and comedians with full time crews handling their special effects and props. When you play in an actual game, the “production value” is going to be much lower. People might not be quite as witty, and the story might not be quite as dramatic, but you’ll still find a bunch of people trying their best to go on an adventure and build an immersive fantasy world.
As for how welcoming the game is to younger players, that depends entirely on the group. Each group is their own unit, so the social norms and expectations will drastically vary for each one.
Welcome
The bot post above has some great resources to help you get into the hobby.
To answer your first question, it is largely going to depend on your group as there are many ways to play dnd.
The most famous live plays are often played by played with years of experience in voice acting, improv, or come from a theater background.
As for your second question, libraries, schools, and tabletop shops often have youth dnd programs. So there definitely are spaces that cater to that age group.
Hello
What's the best playable race for stealth
To add to Colossus's great points.
What you'll get out of it depends on how much you put into it.
When players come in with high energy, enthusiasm, and give the game their undivided attention it be very immersive.
Compared to instances, where some come into a game with the expectation that its others job to entertain them for a few hours, that wont be the case.
hey guys, using a class feature counts as a bonus action right? like before or after your attack, you say the ability you want to use
Not always.
Abilities will say whether it uses an action, bonus action, or reaction.
Thanks for the advice @true musk and @fallen surge I look forward to being a confident player and go all out (once I learn the rules and stuf ofc) so yeah, I hope to eventually find a welcoming group and even make some friends on the run
Additional Actions
In addition to an action in combat, you also may perform one of the following:Bonus action.
You can take a bonus action only when a special ability, spell, or other feature of the game states that you can do something as a bonus action.Reaction.
Certain special abilities, spells, and situations allow you to take a special action called a reaction. A reaction is an instant response to a trigger of some kind, which can occur on your turn or on someone else’s.
Good luck on your journey.

It covers some key things that can contribute to a successful and fun campaign.
I had my first session as a DM yesterday, so I can tell you a few things. One of my players barely looked motivated, so I tried to make her roll several times, and asked her more than a few times what would she like to do in X scenario.
What hit me playing with her is that people can have literally 0 idea of how to make actions in the game, for example, she said:
- I see that the inn owner looks a bit sick, so I mention that I could cure him for a discount in one room.
In my head, she had skipped looking to see if there's anything wrong with him. I instead asked her to make a perception check, which I now think should've been an insight check maybe? (new DM), and then told her that he seemed normal and healthy.
Now I think maybe I should've gone with her way a bit more to engage her more with the mechanics, but it seemed a bit out of place. In videos you see the players need some clarifications on a few points, but with new players you literally need to build the whole foundation for them as you learn yourself. Makes it a bit harder, and now I'm worried she might not want to play anymore, but my next session will be more focused on her. My other friends grasp it better so they'll understand.
Ahh, thanks thanks. I'll take a look at that. I'm making a summary of my friends' classes
I was also thinking about this, to my understanding there's a lot of pressure on DMS sometimes, one as a new player doesn't want to mess up or say the wrong thing while the DMS try to include them to participate more in the campaign
Unsolicited advice? Give the player options. "Would you like to A, B, or C?" That might feel like it's limiting agency, and it is but that's because some people freeze up when given a blank slate. And yes, sometimes folks are worried about saying the wrong thing, so encouraging them as players can go a long way. If you didn't do a session zero, sometimes an individual out-of-game chat focused on how you can make them more welcome could help.
I’d suggest “Would you like to A, B, or something else?”
Because then you’re both giving them clear options they can use and still giving them the freedom to try their own ideas.
Appreciate the tweak!

hi i’m new here
Welcome. Feel free to start with the bot post above.
thank you
Yesterday me and my family bought the DnD box and decided to play thinking I had a good enough understanding to be DM from TV shows etc… boy was I wrong
Hello, does anyone have player made campaign they dont mind sharing to play with my friends?
The Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a campaign adapted from the creator's live play campaign. So it's probably as close as you can get to what you're describing
Ive never seen any other examples of people turning their homebrew campaign into a prewritten adventure, for others to play
this help but maybe i worded it weirdly, i meant as if anyone has created a campaign or adventure they played they wouldnt mind sharing 😅
when I look at a dungeon master's raw notes it's never written for public consumption.
oh ok nvm then sorry
this was my outline for an adventure i worked off of for a year, to give you somewhat of an idea https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/849720418796437524/957176392003510312/IMG_20220326_031544.jpg?ex=66bbb13b&is=66ba5fbb&hm=3dc6d76d17434d6188be60c37911142b5a111f5545d819448e93fa649e99d2aa&
ohh ok
should i buy the newcomer D&D books to get started with the game
You can buy “the big three” but I would consider holding g off on purchasing them as the new set of playbooks are set to release in the next fiscal year.
You can find pdfs for pretty much any of the material online
ok thank you
Hello, I'm aware all of the material in the server required to learn the game is easy to find, but can someone (if it isn't a hassle) just send the bare minimum required to learn to start playing? I'm just way too hyped up to search through all the guides.
A character sheet (physical or digital), a set of dice 1d20, 1d12, 1d10, 1d8, 1d6, 1d4 (physical or digital), a friendly adventuring party who is welcome by to new players, and an eagerness to learn/adapt
Any character or mechanical info can be gathered on this discord or online through pdfs
alright, thanks!
Hello, i was making my build, and i was thinking about what feats to pick, but i realized that i don't know how many feat i will get. My build would be 3 levels in fighter, 2 levels in sorcerer and 25 levels in warlock? Can you help me figure out how many?
15*

alright, ty
anyone who can teach me ive never played before
check out #learn-to-play
I wanna try to play, I don't have any dice or equipment for the game tho, I'm not sure if I can buy the stuff, I have already got a tiefling character planned so that's that.
you can use digital dice though!
there are definetly some sites for that
Thanks for telling me
I wanna try to find a game and play over discord.

hi i have a question, i’m reading rules and there is ability called “Constitution” could someone explain what it means? because it’s not my first language and translate doesn’t help. thank you in advance
Constitution represents your core health and ability to withstand physical strain.
oh ok thank you very much
Endurance or stamina. How good you are at shrugging off pain and illness

We can't do anything about your anxiety though
How do I change my weapons? Is there a “shop” we go to or do we find loot? Still learning
ain’t that the truth 😂
The adventures you play in tend reward the player characters with gold or gear.
The specifics are determined by the actual campaign you are playing.
At level 1, when you are creating your character, your class and background determine your starting gear.
how does the ability scores work, i am making my first character
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
After you use one of the methods described above to determine what your ability scores are, you use the table to convert your ability score into an ability modifier. Your ability modifier is what you add to any die rolls that involve that ability. So for example a stealth check is a dexterity based skill, so you would add your dexterity modifier to any stealth checks you make
very complicated ;-; but thanks for the help
Its complicated to get it all set up, but once you determine what your modifiers are, actually playing the game is much more simple. You just roll a die and add a number to it
Which part is confusing you, making you character sheet or the practicality of using them
right now everything is a litle confusing, its my first time in dnd
Then let's take things one step at a time.
Gotcha, I would probably stick to standard array. Take the numbers 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
These will be your ability scores. Now you have to figure out which score you should put where
What class do you want to play?
rogue
hi all, ik you must get this alot, but im new to the dnd scene, i find the game so fasinating and would love to leanr more and participate in a campaign, however i dont have anyone ik who would play, im wondering your advice on getting involved with campaigns and learning the ropes. Thanks.
Start with abilities.
There are six abilities total.
When you try to do something, you draw from one of those six abilities.
If you're trying to do balance on a tightrope, you're using your dexterity.
If you're trying to sweet talk someone into letting you into a VIP section, you'll be using Charisma.
Does this make sense so far?

ty, ill check it out now
1 sec i am almost done with the character sheet i will look over it and tell you what i made
hey what does a prayers book and wheel do?
Acolyte background?
yep
This is more or less flavor for the character. If your character follows a deity (which are very prominent in most DnD environments), this gives them a way to exercise their beliefs
It also gives an easy out if you want to eventually multiclass into Paladin or cleric
so does the items do the same thing?
Most of them, yes. Stuff like ropes, incense, and food can actually be used
It’s really dependent how you want to play your character
understood
Welcome!
There's some good info in #learn-to-play that can get you started, but do you have any specific questions?
basically like everything, i dont really understand how to even begin creating my character i thought i had an idea but looking back i dont think i understood it right haha!
Picking a race, class, and background is a good place to start.
What kind of character did you want to play?
maybe a support kind of character? or like a sneaky one like an assassin? sorry i dont really know much about dnd but ive always loved the idea of it and always wanted to play and get into it
There's plenty of options for both of those!
Bards and clerics both have plenty of support options.
Rogue's are a good fit for an assassin, too.
alright!!
Take a look at the links spamandtuna provided, see what feels interesting. It's good to see what kind of options the game provides and it might help you think of something.
But if none of those seem like what you're after, there's more options available.
okay ill have a look thank you both alot!!
so does class determine what kind of role ill play? like support etc?
just making sure im understanding correctly!
Essentially, yeah.
You class is going to be the biggest factor in determining what things your character can do, and what they're good at.
As you level up, you'll unlock new abilities in that class.
Each class also offers a number of subclasses, which let you specialize in different aspects of that class (like the rogue's Assassin subclass).
okay well i read the whole of half-elf and i think thats the race id like to go with! :)
Or a rogue can be a Thief or a Swashbuckler or a number of other things.
oh right this leads me to my next question haha! how do i know exactly what stats to put in?
i know i get if i remember +2 charisma since im a half-elf
U could use Tasha's rules and assign the boni as u like
what is tasha's rules? sorry im completely new to all of this
There's three main ways to determine your ability scores. You should ask your DM which one to use.

alright! yeah since i havent really played before or even made my character i hadnt gone around looking for a DM yet
A charismatic half-elf could make for an effective bard, though.
Or a smooth-talking rogue.
As for "Tasha's rules", they're referring to a separate book of optional rules, called Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Is there a way that we can find a dm here that is willing to dm for a campaign?
One of those rules lets you reassign any ability score increases from your race to a different ability.
Tasha's is a rule book wich introduced a new rule wich would allow you to change ur racial boni for example u could have a +2 In con instead of Cha this makes it so u can play any class with any race without drawbacks
So if you wanted that +2 in something other than Charisma, like Dexterity, that's one possible solution.
But one that you'd probably want to discuss with your DM first.
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
I think this is just a universally accepted rule
I'd agree with that, but since it is technically an optional rule, it can't hurt to ask first.
D&D is a game of communication and cooperation, after all.
It should be
okay so i got half-elf and rogue so far, now all i need is background
Criminal/Spy is a natural fit for a rogue.
Or you could play against expectations and choose something like Noble.
There's Folk Hero if you want something more like a Robin Hood.
im leaning towards more spy
okay NOW i need to make a name
i was thinking of like lucas but when i look at other dnd players they have much more detailed names and its pretty cool
You can name your character whatever you like if you haven't joined a game yet. Once you do, you may be asked to tweak it. For instance, "Bob" might not fly at a table where the vibe is serious, but it might be totally okay if folks are less concerned about tone and consistency.
thats good to know! :)
I almost always use a random name generator for mine.
Add, change or remove a letter from a common name. Adam could become Adak. Barbara could become Balbara.
I like to use names from past games or books I’ve read. 🤷🏼♀️
That is SO clever. I’ve never heard of that.
I either play with syllables I want to incorporate, take inspiration from a book/game/etc. as a jumping-off point, or just steal wholesale if it's obscure enough.
Alliteration is always a good tool. How I came up with mine, which happens to be the name of my hagspawn druid pc
Loukas Naïlo?? ive never been good at this stuff haha
Sounds solid to me
okay thats good to hear! thank you for the feedback
Sounds like a perfect start to an excellent new pc
I’ve always been told to just yell out a name when you think of it. It’s nice to have one with a nice ring if you’re in an intense situation, I.e. being called out or being called out to
i feel like im being a big bother but what does sources mean? should i allow all?
Ironically how my Dad came up with my real name lol
You don't need to worry about those since you're not in a game yet.
it all feels so overwhelming
What it means is what books (etc.) are allowed for you to create a character.
so do i just dont mind it for now and when i get in the game i worry about it?
That’s what we’re all here to help with 🙂
It is a lot, but once you make one character, you’ll probably make 2-3 more out of curiosity and fun

twins!!!
I take it you're making your character on D&D Beyond? I'd just leave that whole first page at their defaults until/unless your DM says otherwise.
The DM will tell you what to change, if anything. It's nothing to be concerned about yet!
okok
I will be doing that for sure
Yay 😭
Welcome welcome 🤗 feel free to reach out with any questions!
uhhh which language should i choose
Any. The choices you make outside of a game are just for practice.
so its not offical?
Nope.
alright ill just choose uhhh zemnian
It’s also something you can hash out with your dm. They can share what common languages there are in the area.
Say you make an elf character. You're really psyched to play them. But you join a game and the DM doesn't allow elves. What do? Or you use standard array but the DM uses a different ability score spread. It's about knowing what choices are available and how to make them, rather than the result being important just yet.

I recommend standard array described above.
so i just
roll the dice from 1-20 six times
then the highest 3 i add to
stats
OH WOOPS NEVERMIND just saw the standard array thing
do i worry about anything else?
after putting in the numbers
Equipment, I think. Choose starting equipment to make it easier.
wait, i dont understand this. Rolling the dice is rolling a 6-sided die 4 times, and summing the 3 highest of the 4. Repeat this process 6 times, and then assign the values to the ability scores in any way you like
It doesn't make a difference in what your character can do, so it's not an important choice.
Yes. It might be faster to roll the four dice at the same time, remove the lowest and total the rest. Write that down and repeat the process until you have six scores.
so what about tools? do i pick something or leave it blank also
Your background or class should give you some tool proficiencies
okay
btw i saw the discussion between the starter set and the essentials in a video. the author preferred the starter set, but after watching an unboxing of the starter set, i was glad i bought the essentials set. Like, the contents are pretty similar, but the essentials has more things imo
You can pick something if it prompts you to. You can review tools here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#Tools
hello :]
‘Ello!
True, I noticed the essential set includes 4 d6 for this, nice detail from them
I prefer the Starter Set adventure to the Essentials Kit one, but that's just a matter of what folks prefer to run/what seems an easier onramp for them.
True
im looking for the thieves tools but it isnt on here
What are you looking in?
hey i made a character on roll20 and i just realized i cant download the sheet, what stie should i do it on
D&D Beyond is a popular choice. Far from the only one, but it's what a lot of folks here use.
I'm not really a newcomer but I still need help where do I ask
Ask your question and we can direct you if needed!
I dont know why I’m blanking, but I think you can just add it in your inventory towards the end? Once you have the character sheet filled out you simply add inventory in the appropriate section. You can also add it in your other proficiencies box. (I can’t remember if that just gets added by dnd beyond via backgrounds or whatever).
I need to write a tragic backstory something I haven't done since I played the inevitable first assassin character one playes as a 13 year old
I recommend DnD beyond if you want a digital character sheet. You can also find a pdf of a blank sheet on google if you’re comfortable with tracking making it yourself
#character-discussion is the place!
what does lifestyle and faith mean?
Lifestyle is described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#LifestyleExpenses
Faith is what god you follow, if any. It should be blank until you know the DM's setting.
i found a good already made elf rouge
Idk if there’s a specific tragic backstory channel, but I’m available to bounce ideas off of.
It should be know that a lot of dms who have created their own settings also have their own pantheon of gods
are elfs good ?
They’re a popular choice because of their fey ancestry and darkvision
Sure! All races can be good.
Even grung ( a frog race that has to submerge in water every 8 hours or die) are a good race. It’s about how you play them
I was a barbarian that carried our grung companion around in a barrel of water on my back. He ended up ascending to godhood
lol
can i use minor illusion to like make footsteps behind an enemy to distract it?
Spells do what they say they do. Whether that's going to have the effect you want is up to the DM.

uhhh i finished idk if its any good though 😭 https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/alexanderidk_129976252.pdf
some stuff is missing is there any other way to share it?
oh well theres this https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/129976252/XcJlRi
I have a weird question, When is it ok to talk in dnd? Ive only ever played with my friends, but if i joined a random group of people when is it acceptable? Currently I try and be quiet if the DM is specifically talking to someone, but I might say like a single sentence on someone elses turn like oh you should do this it would be funny :p maybe thats not ok
but im thinking of join a random person group so don't want to make anyone angry
Looks good!
I’d recommend going with a higher Constitution. That will increase your max HP and help keep you alive.
Maybe swap it with INT.
Don’t forget to equip your weapons and armor either.
oh have i not equipped it? woops
Every group is going to be different. Go in with good intentions and a polite manner.
I don’t think there’s any one right answer to this question. What works for one group may not work as well for yours, so it’s probably worth discussing it as a group.
hey i also finished my first character how is it https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/129978459
how do i equip 😭😭
oh ok ty, ill just ask whatever group I join and explain im new so if i do it wrong they can tell me 🙂
I can take a look if you make it shareable ☺️
how do i do that :d
Click your character name, open Character Settings, then scroll to the very bottom.
I believe it’s just checking the “public” option
There’s a “Character Privacy” setting there.
it should be public now https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/129978459
Looks good to me.

Hi ! I just joined and i was wondering in someone can give me some guidance and tips to help me learn about dnd? I've heard about a few things about the game, but im not really sure where to start...
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you going, but did you have any specific questions?
Hello! Just joined!
hey so watching videos was a big help namely “dnd shorts” or “so you might be a DND” were helpful along with watching critical role campaigns
Yeah how do you start making your character and is there an easier way to kind of understand the stats, because i am so lost haha
ill try it out thank you
theres tons of great channels and honestly playing bg3 was helpful as well
i wish i could play it but my PC is running out of space and id have to sacrifice something
awe thats so unfortunate
do you mind if i dm you some stuff to help you?
channels mainly
Loooove the terms of tomatoes
yes ofc that would be great
this is what actualy made me interested in dnd
haha i love this interpretation
I'm looking for a dnd group to join, I'm new to the game and want to start playing but don't know much about how it works.

What im thinking is a half orc monk
And on what abilitys i can give it
To not be OP or underwellming
The rules of D&D outline what powers and abilities your character can have based on what race, class, and subclass you choose. So long as you make a character that follows the rules, they won't be OP or underwhelming
Oooo, thanks alot
What background are you thinking about taking?
This might be incredibly vague but I’m fairly new to D&D and about to do my second campaign, but this time I need a backstory and things that my character wants and fears. Is there anywhere I can go to get ideas for this. My character is a half orc rouge
A son of a human woman and a male orc, wanting they'r son to follow they'r violent warrior path but it never interésted him fighting whit weapons and more liking martial arts and hand to hand combat, training in secret under the tutor of a human monk. After he's training is completed he goes to a death match tournament that he' s parents made him signed up, dominating the competicion whit only hand to hand combat, but he's parents were disgusted on his more Tame figthing nature and rejecting him after the tournament.
I actually meant to ask "which background". Like sage, solider, acolyte...
You could ask in #character-discussion. Or are you asking for a tool to use yourself?
Have you tried looking at the bonds/traits/flaws for the standard backgrounds? Those can be good starting points
You mean sub class?
I was just wondering if there was a tool or something to like help brainstorm some ideas
I’ve tried but my dm wants a bit more of a backstory and I’m not to sure what to make it
Can you work with your DM to develop some backstory?
3 good questions to think about are why are you adventuring, what did you do before, what do you care about
I can do but wanted to try get some ideas first but I don’t know where to start I have bonds/traits/flaws but I’m not sure how to expand it from there
#character-discussion is the place to get in depth with your query.
Ok thank you
Fire away!
how to determine armor class?
i learned that u have to calculate with dex mod
but i dont get what determines if you have metal armor or leather or how to make it strong without dex mod
By default, a character's armor class is 10 + their dexterity modifier.
Not all armor includes the Dex mod, as you can see on these charts: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#ArmorandShields
Armors, spells, class or racial features, and more can give you other ways to calculate your AC.
Light armor you can use your full Dex bonus, medium you can only use up to +2, and heavy doesn't include your Dex bonus at all.
When you have more than one possible calculation, you can choose between them. They don't add together.
Well, this really helped me in fleshing out more my character, thanks
thank you
make him look like the clash royal monk but green
You can, but it's difficult to do so in D&D.
There aren't really "escape" rules.
Yeah, but im gonna lean on the more younger side
can i attack my friends mid combat?
So you can certainly attempt to run, but the monsters could potentially give chase.
That's a question you should discuss with your group.
You can, but D&D is a collaborative game. That's generally a bad idea, as you're breaking the social contract.
that is what i want it is great
Are your fellow players going to have fun being randomly attacked by other party members?
If so, have at it.
i was thinking of having an evil chatacter
That, like many choices, should be cleared with the table first.
Ultimately D&D is a game of you and your friends telling a story together.
If you're trying to be evil while everyone else wants to tell a story about heroes, then it's going to make things difficult.
If everyone else wants to be evil, too, then more power to you.
There aren't explicit rules for that, but it could happen.
Your DM might have you roll a persuasion or intimidation check to convince someone to surrender.
these are just stuff i couldnt see in campaigns in youtube
A DM might choose to have certain enemies surrender on their own.
i was asking if I can surrender?
Likewise, you could tell your enemies that you surrender, but the monsters may or may not listen.
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
But there's tons of other places you could search, too.
Every monster will have their own motivations in combat. A guard that is trying to arrest you might be willing to listen, but an owlbear that's trying to eat you probably won't
Wellp, I think im ready to make my character sheet and find a group to play
Yellow
I’m new to actually dnd, but I used to play homebrew
Could anyone teach me the ropes and stuff?
I wanna be a bard

I try to though I’m autistic with adhd so it’s hard for me to stay focused on a big article and stuff
I’d start there and as you try it out and run into any questions feel free to ask here and we can help answer them
Check the videos linked in the bot message above as well (introductory videos)
With reading or watching the videos (or both)
Well I’d start at anything discussing how to create a character (as that was your question)
The bard one is a good choice if you want to learn more about bards.
I can
Name: Darius shadow strike
Class: Bard
Race: High elf
Proficiency: +2 bonus
Walking Spd: 30 Ft
Initiative: +2
AC: 13
Str: -1 (8)
Dex: +2 (15)
Con: +2 (14)
IQ: +1 (13)
Wis: +0 (10)
Chr: +2 (15
That’s some starting ones, he’s lv 1
That character is good and easy to fit in any campaign
If you'd like help and feedback on your character, the #character-discussion is the best place to have that conversation
Well

Hi, i am new to this game and am looking to start playing
Hey there, check out #find-a-game for how to find a game to play
Hey all, is there some dedicated character sheet generator on here or something like that?
Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking for. Are you looking for premade characters or a platform to create character with?
They're asking for something to make a character sheet with.
D&D Beyond is a popular choice.
Yeah that’s what I meant - whether there’s a Discord option or a 3rd party resource like D&D Beyond, thanks!
im very confused on this server works can i have some help
If you have questions about the server rules you can ask to speak with a moderator in #moderator-support -but do check the server rules.
See #rules message
thank you
😮 hellow everyone, im a new in dnd! just started playing with my friends irl last week or so, just joined the server to learn more, this is the right place right?
I’m really struggling to find any online campaign to play in - I’m brand new and haven’t played before, and my only previous experience was being invited to a campaign but the DM said I MUST make my character bad because I’m disabled (not someone in this group don’t worry)! Any games available seem to be in the US time zone, so if anyone knows any advice for a newbie like me on finding folks who are beginner friendly or fancy letting me tag along let me know 😊😊😊

This is the official D&D server so welcome! Do you have any specific questions?
Hey there. Try checking out #find-a-game to learn how to locate a group to play with
All the advice I would give you is here in this Looking for Game/Group guide I wrote: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
For sure! There’s a server guide to help you figure out what channel to use. But you can find one you think is right and if it’s not quite on base, you’ll be directed where you should go by the lovely people here.
thanks! i'm gonna try to shed off my shyness and ill ask if i get lost (i might be in a while) yey!
Thanks! I’ve been reaching out in these ways for a few weeks but hopefully something will come up soon! 🙂
@dnd-discussion. Hello, I am new to D&D. Should I play online or find a group where I live. (Anyone from toronto or waterloo area)?
If you have no preference, and you're able to, you should look both online and irl. Here, you can try to find online games using #find-a-game
Thank you Zem
No problem, Amm

how would someone make their own spell
Very carefully
Narratively or mechanically?
like if i wanted to cast a spell to blow up a body part, or give a certain disease to something
im on dnd beyond using the spell guide. also ive never played dnd before
Rules as written, you can’t make up your own spell.
That said, since you’ve never played before. You’re better off taking the time learning about the spells that already exists in the books.
Otherwise you might find yourself spending a lot time and energy on something that was already available.
Plus creating any new mechanic, such as homebrewing a new spell, is dependent on DM approval.
Yeah. Focus on the basics for now. Once you've got experience under your belt, ask your DM if you can make a spell, and definitely start by modifying existing spells, rather than making one up wholecloth. It'll help you learn how to balance their power against their spell level.
yoo any suggestions for a vtt been looking at foundry cus people be talking its good and its one time payment but I've now for my first campaing been using DnD beyond's maps feature so any tips or some like that?
Power Word Spill recently released a video showcasing 14 different virtual table tops: https://youtu.be/ptzr70aVc4M
Perhaps you can find one that suits your budget and needs.
I like Foundry, but I've only used it as a player. All my DMing experience is on roll20, but I don't plan on using it again.
yeah watched that video but still wondering like in dnd beyond for more monster tokens and spells for players you need to buy the books so does foundry like come with monster tokens too or? and yeah lot of people talking also about roll 20 but if I understand correctly it also would need a subscription
I’ve been using Alchemy RPG since it suits I like the scene designs that incorporate vfx, sounds, and music with a background image. It also pair well with maps.
#third-party should be able to provide more answers.
In general though you’ll either need to buy content that provides ready made tokens or set them up yourself.
aight
Tokens from the free SRD tend to already be ready made and free.
hey how can i find some people to play with them ?

and another q is that ok if my english is beginner and i'm here to improve it and beside enjoy the game
I’m in my first campaign and I’m a level 3 paliden and I want to muilticlass next level what should I muilticlass into
Why do you want to multiclass?
What does multiclass mean? so you can level up more than 1 class.
at the same time?
You can have multiple classes. It can increase versatility but it sacrifices your capstone abilities
Personally, that's not really a good reason, BUT if you really want to multiclass, you need to figure out what you want out of it.
Are you doing it for roleplay reasons? Or to make a specific build?
I was going to do sorcerer so I can have access to to more long range spells
Okay. So the pros of sorcerer, more long range spells. Also that it's a charisma based spellcaster like paladin.
The cons, you won't gain much HP from those levels. And you'll need another spellcasting focus to cast your sorcerer spells.
The magic initiate feat might help instead of taking a level in another class.
I am the parties tank so I was also thinking about taking fighter so I can have more hp and get action surge but it’s between that and sorcerer or just staying paliden
A dip into fighter for action surge isn't a bad idea.
I will probably do that then thanks for the help
quick question! if a cleric makes an attack roll with a spell but misses, does it still consume the spell slot?
If you use a spell, the spell slot is spent whether or not it hits.
oh dang, we'll see how my clerics deals with it the rest of the campaign
You regain spell slots on a long rest though
So as long as you're following the actual rules... you should be fine
Should be fine, just let your potential group know.
Hello everyone, I never played DND ever but I always wanted to and I just saw a video of Deborah Ann Woll doing it and now I REALLY want to become a DM to teach my friends and play with them , I just absolutely do not know where to even start or what to even buy

The additional bot posts above should help
Thank you guys
Whats the minimum of friends i have to bring with me to make a good first campaign ?
SevenFour or five
The game is balanced roughly around a party of 3-5
Are there any DND race that is always like thinks about food like shaggy from Scooby doo?
