There is a lot to read and to learn
How can I play online
No tag online found.
you find a game that is advertised in one of the many places for that. Common ones are /lfg on reddit or roll20.net, but there is also this server.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online found the link for online advice
btw, we can stick together, to search for a game, if you want
@static pecan DMed me too, of the same topic
So, if we are all up to the game, and could find a game / DM, we might have a first session : )
But, I'm being too optimistic
Ight bet👀
Thats not a bad idea, if not a first session at least someone to take you through character creation and how to play
Hello I'm newbie never played dnd before
But I'm interested on how to make a character so I can join a game?
Check these links to pick a race and class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/races
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes
Use the standard array for your ability scores: 15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8, any order you like.
Check the pinned posts in this channel for more info.
Don't forget to share what you come up with in #character-discussion !
I read the character page
It was awesome 💯

Question! I understand half elves don’t usually have subraces. Would it be possible to do or is it typically frowned upon?
There are some varient half elf subraces in the sword coasts adventurers guide
I’ll have to check that out! I wanted the subrace of wood elf, but I’ll check out what that guide has to offer.
yeah i got the same question
Yes wood elf is In There plus high elf dark elf and sea elf
Oh great, thank you!

hey i have a question about magic, im playing a paladin and i am level 1 but the paladin has some spells that he only can take with him on level as an example divine sense and lay on hands but how can i learn the othe rlevel 1 spells? is it by leveling up or some other mechanic?
Paladins don’t get spells till lvl 2
Divine sense and lay on Hands are abilities not spells
alright good to know but as an example im level 2 but i want to learn ceremony that is an level 1 spell can i just do it or do i have to do something to learn it?
Is ceremony a paladin spell? Spell lvl is different to character lvl there is a table in the class description that shows you the lvl of spells you learn at certain lvls
I believe so
so that means when im level 2 that i can not use level 2 spells?
so when im level 5 i can use level 4 spells right?
My b, for paladins, you get 2nd level spells at 5th level
The thing with Paladins is they're half casters, so they don't get a ton of spells
where do you see it?
If you click that link that Enoki sent on mobile, you gotta slide over a little
I'll send a screenshot
thank you for your help i get it now
Of course
which channel would i ask about how to make a certain kind of character build?
hii! i'm about to start a campaign where i'll be playing full caster (cleric) for the first time, and we're already starting at relatively high (7th) level. is there any beginner-friendly tips and tricks to keep track of all of your spells? because i am kind of afraid of being overwhelmed with so much info from the start
If you're using DnD Beyond having a tab open will help you a lot.
we'll be using owlbear rodeo, so i'll probably have pdf or its printed version c:
If you're using Owlbear I assume you're playing online. DnD Beyond is a very helpful website. The only downside is that you have to pay for certain content.
i dont completely understand how the artificer uses magic, from reading the 5e page i am pretty sure that artificers use theives or artisands tools to cast spells, but im not entirely sure on like the limits or whatever of those spells, under spells ive seen stuff like components and im not sure how/if those are needed with artificer magic with tools?
(is this the right channel to ask about that?)
Do you know about what a spell focus does in general?
maybe but im not sure tbh 😅
A spell focus is used in place of material components; otherwise you’d use a component pouch. Artificers can use a tool for a focus, that’s all. The ordinary rules for spellcasting still apply to them.
Helloo
I'm new to dnd.. i wanna make a character but i need help understanding the basics..

so an artificer can just use any spell with their tools, and the only restrictions are like the normal restricitions of that spell, except for the components because the tool is instead of it?
Any spell on the class list. And yes, the tool replaces mundane components. Components with a gold value are still required.
so if i wanted my aritificer to cast the blur spell, id just use a tool and like use my action to cast it?
Blur is only verbal components, so you wouldn’t need the focus. But yes, it would take your action.
What about spell slots?
like how does that apply to the artificer?
Same as any other spellcaster. You use a spell slot of the appropriate level when you cast a spell.
Artificers effectively have a Material component for every spell, even those that don’t normally have one.
You must have a spellcasting focus—specifically thieves’ tools or some kind of artisan’s tool—in hand when you cast any spell with this Spellcasting feature (meaning the spell has an ‘M’ component when you cast it). You must be proficient with the tool to use it in this way.
After you gain the Infuse Item feature at 2nd level, you can also use any item bearing one of your infusions as a spellcasting focus.
@uneven panther So even for Blur, you would indeed need your tools.
ok thanks
Some artificer subclasses provide additional options for your spellcasting focus as well.
Armorers can use their arcane armor.
Artillerists can use their arcane firearm as well.
just got very confused reading the invisibility spells - is the only way to make yourself invisible with the 4th level spell greater invisibility? or can u still do it with 2nd level invisibility if the creature you touch is yourself?
Would a bard be a support character or could you do good damage with one?
Get some nice spells with magic secrets to do some damage
all spells with a range of touch can be used on yourself yes
as long as the character is able to touch themselves
ok thanks got confused for a sec
what does S stand for under a spell component?
somatic
it means the specific hand movements must be made for the spell to take effect
in effect, if your hands are bound, or both hands are occupied by weapons or other held items, you cannot perform somatic components
V is verbal and M is material
ohhh ok thanks
short and long rests?
Hey im new but ive played through baldurs gate but no clue where to star any tips?

I’d recommend starting with dnd. Adventurers League.
Thanks for the clarification!
usually how long does it take to go from level 1 to 20?

ive been looking at the spells in 5e and used the artificer filter, and it looks as if the artificer can only use 5 spells i think? just wanted to know if thats right
Is your filter set to a certain level of spell? Because artificer have a much larger list to choose from: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/class/252717-artificer
ohhhhhh no i forgot i was looking for only illusion spells 🤣
yes there are more srtificer spells on 5e 🤣
just looked through the learn to play channel, can someone help me with the character creation on the website?
I'm assuiming you're using DnDBeyond?
yep
Assuming you're using DnDBeyond via a web browser (not mobile app) I'd suggest opening up the free basic rules in one tab/browser window and follow along with the first chapter (it goes through creating a character step by step).
Additionally in the builder screen, check the "Beginner? Show help text" option on DnDBeyond and it will help explain things.
If you have any specific questions as you go through this, feel free to ask here.
You can also check out the Introductory Videos that can help break down some D&D rules into smaller digestible videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Ok I have a crazy idea for a level 3 wizard… so the spell enlarge and reduce doubles an object or persons size. So if I use flaming sphere, a 5 foot diameter ball of fire, can I make that 10 feet in diameter, or would the enlarge spell not work on it? Or would it be a dm choice?
i was looking at the invis spell, and 5e says theres other ways of being able to use it through either "other options and features" or through "feats" but i cant find anythign with very much info on when/how your allowed to add those to ur characters save meeting the prerequistes?
im trying to create a character but in the basic rules it doesnt say anything about what to do on the character preferences screen?
You can leave those alone. Your character is practice if you don't have a DM yet, so those options don't matter.
This channel is for new to D&D folks to get started with understanding the core game rules and mechanics. Your question would better fit in #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion
Ok
can i just add any of the "other options and features" or "feats" as long as i meet the prerequistes?
I'd avoid adding feats for now - that's an optional rule that would very much depend on the DM and game you're playing in.
But you could play with it if you want.
The optional rule is you can add a feat instead of take an attribute/skill increase. So at certain levels you can increase your skills - but with feats you could forgo that increase and instead take a feat if the DM allows it.
how do i know what the certain level is?
It's on the progression chart for each class.
I'm new to the latest version of D and D I have always liked playing a ranger from original D and D so all I really need is a refresher I quit playing in the 2nd addition

^ Useful resources to help get you refreshed or started!
On the class' progression chart. It lists what you get at each level and at certain levels (for many classes 4,8,12, etc) you can give the character an ability score increase or under optional rules (aka dm consent) a feat
There are a few exceptions to the ASI pattern, fighters, for example get more of them as they level
and if im multiclassing, do i still need all 4 levels in that class?
Yes
ok thanks
what does the generation method do? what option do i select
what about the "other options and features" part of 5e? that seems different from the feats, or are they just the same thing?
Roughly how long does it usually take to go from level 1-20 in a campaign?
Years in all likelihood.
If you mean for ability scores, the most generically accepted generation method is the standard array option.
You get a set of numbers to plug in to the different ability stores to give your character shape. Like a wizard might want high intelligence so would maybe put the 15 from standard array there
im struggling to actually find a game?
Not all campaigns go to level 20. Most end around level 10 to 12. It may take a couple years if a campaign goes from level 1 to 20.
You've looked through the posts in #looking-for-players?
yeah but no luck i get beat out by more experienced players
im on dndbeyond looking at the rouge table for 1-20 so some of these feats ill never obtain in a campaign?
Follow Zero's advice here: #dnd-newcomers message
Or you can widen your net and try the various places I list in my Looking for Game/Group guide.
thx
High-level play is not a guarantee. It is difficult to balance for, and it can take a long time to reach that tier.
I don't recommend planning your PC to be level 20. Just enjoy the character.
PC?
sorry not up to date with terms
My current campaign started at level 5 and the PCs are now level 9 after two (real) years. At the slow rate they're going it'll be another two years when they reach level 20.
PC = player character
NPC = non-player character
DM = Dungeon Master

Hey guys, I'm a new dungeon master and I would like to know where you guys play ur sound effets and background music. That would chaage my life for real 💀
See if the folks in #dm-discussion have any suggestions!
Alright thx !
does anyone know?
i finished making my character and am on the character sheet screen, will it save my character if i close the tab?
I think D&D Beyond saves any choices you make.
Yes - your character data is saved
Ah so the halfling lucky option has nothing to do with finding magical items right? just a reroll?
Yep.
are there any magic find traits or feats?
No official ones.
so when your playing d&d online do you use an app or like just play how you would in real life but on a call?
?tag new online
ok cool that will save me a lot of time and help pick my character
The Additional Features and Traits section gets filled out with features your class level(s) and species and background provide. It's just more space for them on the sheet.
Are these hippos "giff" only for a specific campaign this adventures in space or something?
They're tied to the Spelljammer setting, but a DM could include them wherever they like.
no not on the character sheet, theres a whole section of 5e called other options and features with a bunch of stuff
Giff are a spacefaring species in the Spelljammer campaign setting. Keep in mind that not every DM allows them as playable characters.
Is this in the free basic rules? Can you give me a URL to what you're looking at?
Are there any websites that display race details? looks like beyond only allows me to view players handbook / basic rule classes and all the other fancy ones are wanting me to buy a book or something
Like I wanted to check out the giffs lox and deep gnomes but no info without buy a book seems like
yeah thats where i am but when trying to view giff details it just wants to sell a book
Yeah you have to own the books to access that material - not everything is available for free
bummer
Stick to the base playable races for now. Don't assume your future DM will allow all playable races.
yeah kinda wanted to piece together 2-3 classes and see what would be allowed
I'd recommend trying out whats available in the free basic rules for now and if you like it enough and feel it's worth it to you and your game, then buy the books that have the materials you want.

Probably. Check in with #optimization or #character-discussion!
what is a "vhuman"
A short for Variant Human which is a alternative version you can pick aside from the regular human
I was asking how long a long rest is and how long a short rest is?
like in minutes, hours?
A long rest is 8 hours and a short rest is 1 hour
Specifically, a short rest is 1 hour of nonstrenous activity while a long rest is 6 hours of sleeping and 2 hours of nonstrenous activity.
Some races have abilities that change the length of their long rest (ex. Elves enter an unmoving trance for 4 hours)
I just bought the essentials kit and I’m reading the rule book there is a lot to learn I will be the dm and the other 2 adventures are newbie’s also should I try to remember most of this or should we just jump into it and give it a go or is there something I must absolutely must learn first I have somewhat of a understanding on character build and some of the rules
I was abt to ask something similar LOLOL I jus bought the starter kit
Should I buy the players handbook or is the rules in the starter kit enough
There is so much in the rulebook if you have to learn the players handbook and the DM‘s guide, it would take forever to get started
You can get started just by reading the basic rules, which is linked in this channels pins
Good deal I just don’t want to mess up everyone’s first time playing
You don’t need to memorize every rule, but it is important to understand how character creation, skill checks, and combat work
Sup lads, im new here.
Ok sounds good thanks
Just out of curiousity, are all of these games played over discord or a website?
The PHB and DMG can be great paid tools, but aren’t strictly necessary. The PHB is essentially a more detailed basic rules imo with more player options, and the DMG is mostly an advice book.
There are many ways to play. Discord is a common tool to play online, usually for voice chat.
In my experience online games use a few tools to play the game. - Something for voice chat like discord
- A website for digital character sheets like D&DBeyond
- A dice roller (can be independent or integrated into another tool like a discord dice bot)
- A virtual tabletop (roll20, FoundryVTT, tabletop simulator)
Do i have to use the dice roller? What if i have actual dice?
That’d be up to the DM. Using physical dice is more common for irl D&D
I thought so, i didnt know if it was widely accepted virtually.
It’s always good to ask
Well it much appreciated for the help, thank you.

Is there something you wanted to ask about the rules?
Just saying hello, i'm pretty new and trying to figure out how to get started so doing some research rn. :))
Check the dyno post above!
Thanks! Watching some of the videos now, don't know if this is the right place to ask but are there any 'simple' video explanations for how to set up your ability scores?
This channels pins have a link to the Handbooker Helper video supplement which is a great tool for character creation
In general, if you haven’t joined a campaign yet it’s safest to do Point Buy or Standard Array since those methods will always produce a set of stats with a similar if not identical power level
The DM will determine the method you ultimately use (including rolling)
Outside of that, each class has build recommendations in their class page. Usually each one has a primary stat that they want to get as high as possible.
xanathars guide to everything or monsters of the multiverse for a next purchase? We already have the DM Guide, Player Handbook and Monster Manual.
Trying to nab every book that adds new classes/sub-classes and races

If you want subclasses, pick Tasha's Cauldron of everything.

They are official books, just ones with alternate covers.
If you're new to the hobby you can start with just the free basic rules and work your way up to buying books later down the line.
More or less a recurring player. Took up playing when covid first started, DM passed two years ago, haven't played since.
Wife and I are slowly getting back into it and relearning how to play. With me learning how to DM. We do not mind purchasing the books, just looking to get the max we can for character creation c:
But sweet, glad to know they are the official versions of the books ^-^
When buying dnd books books and determining if something is a good deal you can see what the books are selling for on dndbeyond, you local book stores, and at nearby tabletop shops.
Dndbeyond is owned by Wizards of The Coast and buying anything from there means you're buying it directly from the publisher.
While at book stores and tabletop shops, you can look at the back of the books and see the official MSRP price printed on the books.
This can serve as a decent guide for determining prices.
You're also likely to find these books at your local library.
No, there’s definitely more free DMs than paid. Here specifically, everything in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community should be free. Paid games should be found only in #paid-looking-for-game.
how do you do cantrips like people usually say "I cast [spell]" when using spells do you just say for example "i touch the enemy in front of me with chill touch?"
so chill touch is a weird one in that you do a ranged spell attack with it (range 120ft) if you tried to use it on someone at melee, weirdly, it'd be at disadvantage to hit because you are casting a spell and a creature is within 5ft.
When you cast a spell (cantrip or levelled spell), you do that as part of your turn and usually as your action in the round. You can say "I'd like to cast chill touch on that enemy over there" and the DM will likely ask you to roll for the attack.. or roleplay it like "I start to wave my hands, with my fingers making intricate patterns, in the air as I whisper the incantations.. a spectral hand rises up out of the ground, skeletal and oozing a green nebulous light and it strikes out at the hobgoblin"
oh thank you
Is there any games that I can play in the discord chats only?
Check #find-a-game
You’d be looking for play by post (PBP) games specifically
i wonder why people are asking me if i could join them for their 'sessions' when i asked for a pbp game
i thought pbp was just sessions just spread out longer
well not really, you get the point
Play By Post are games that are text only
so they dont need sessions right?
Each play by post game varies on what the DM asks for.
Some my ask that people make at least one post per day.
of course, 1 post per day, but they dont need a specific time in the day to be active right?
at least most
It depends on the DM.
hm
Posting once every day is already more dedication than I see from a lot of players. Sadly.
Like with any campaign, it's important to discuss preferences and expectations beforehand to see if everyone is compatible with each other.
tru tru

Tools for what? Player character sheets? DM tools?
player character sheets

I'd suggest roll20. Pretty easy to learn, lots of customization, and can auto calculate a lot of the math.

can you elaborate?
Like on an internet forum folks can play D&D - DM posts a message describing a scene and asks the players to describe what their character is doing. Players each post a message describing what their character is doing. DM then posts a message asking the players to make any skill checks/ability rolls/saving throws and report what they got. So on and so forth. The game takes place via text-based messages.
Hi there. I'm looking to start a game of D&D as a DM
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Hi im new to dnd and was wondering if i should make a character before i join a group
You should learn the process for creating a character and have loose concepts. That way, you don't get your heart set on a specific character that clashes with the tone and setting of the game you do join.
Got it thanks
What’s a good place to get battle maps and some basic terrain??
Check with folks in #third-party - but for virtual maps I really enjoy 2minutetabletop's maps and assets.
Also note that maps and terrain are completely option to playing D&D.
Besides the aforementioned 2MT, I like Dyson Logos, Neutral Party, Dr. Mapzo, Angela Maps, and Reddit’s r/battlemaps for digital maps.
Hi guys! I'm new to DnD in that I haven't ever (properly, at least) played a live DnD session, but I've enjoyed reading the Forgotten Realms lore for years. I'm looking to get into playing but I'm not sure where is a good place to find a session? I'd like to play actively and regularly though I have (routine) time constraints due to IRL responsibilities. I should be able to commit to certain times but I'd be looking for people who won't hate me if I have something unexpected come up on occasion. I'd like to find sessions with people who are friendly to someone new to playing. Any suggestions of where to start?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Besides the Looking for Group/Game channels here in this server, you may be interested in Adventurers League, which is D&D's organized play program. While sessions may be offered frequently, the group/DM may not be consistent, so you can plan to attend sessions as you're available.
Thanks, I'll have a look at both then ☺️

Hi ! Im new to DND and i would really like to play except i talk in french and im mostly comfortable to talk french so i’m trying to find a french DND group or something. Idk if i can get help with that 🥹
Seeing as this is an english speaking server, you might have difficulty finding other french speaking players here. I would recommend following the advice in iamrazorwing's post just above yours. Try different websites and online communities that are french speaking, and you may have better luck
Hello people! Does anyone have experience with 5ed character creation? I want to make one but dont know how
Have you tried following the steps in the Basic Rules?
I have a question. If someone has the action Teleport, like the Marilith. Can they teleport an unconscious person or being? The being is also unwilling
It depends how the ability is written. For the marilith, it specifies only equipment it's wearing or carrying, so other creatures would not be teleported.
thank you
There are no generic rules for how teleporting works. Each individual feature that allows someone to teleport has its own rules for how it works. The teleport feature on the Marilith monster stat block does not say it can teleport other creatures, so that means it cannot.
Thank you as well
And for future reference, this type of question should be posted in #dnd-rules instead of this channel, since it has to do with the more intricate rules of the game rather than the basics of how to play
ah thanks
I was wondering, isnt there a spanish channel or a spanish dnd discord to find people who speak the lenguage?
Unfortunately no since it’s a rule to keep things in English #rules message
As keeping things in a single language makes it easier to moderate things.
Ah thats sad. I can speak english but I think id panic too much trying to rp haha
You are likely to find other servers or forums dedicated to D&D in Spanish
People can still say they’re looking for groups members who speak a certain language in their looking for group posts.
I havent been able to find spanish forums, only this server
thats nice, ill try to look for those
There are a very small number of public Spanish-speaking D&D servers. I just went to the Explore Discoverable Servers function and used the keywords d&d and espanol. Not many results, but they are out there!
maybe I get lucky and find one

Hi all, I hope you are all doing well!
My friend and I are both interested and looking to get into DnD for quite sometime. I have played a few campaigns myself and my friend has played one single short one quite a few years ago. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for getting started.
Zero's got good info above. You should also check out #learn-to-play and this channel's pinned messages.
ooooo quick response, thank you!!!!!!!! I'll make sure to check it out.
hi, just wondering if wondering if this server talks about other systems such as pathfinder! ik its like the offical dnd one so no probs if we’re not really supposed to
That does sometimes happen in #non-dnd-topics.
alright sick thank you 🙏
The official D&D server is, unsparingly, for discussing D&D except in the channel which is designated for non-D&D discussion; #non-dnd-topics
Hello,
I am new to D&D and I would love to get into ot more but I can do a once a month session since I am a student, full-time work and have kiddo to take care of.
You might be interested in Adventurers League, which isn't a standing commitment; play-by-post, which is text-based and typically asynchronous; and/or westmarches, which are community-based D&D groups where folks sign up to a session on a mutually convenient day/time.
Hey i have tried to play dnd with some friends and buddies but we never really got into it i felt alone in it i just wanna play and have fun ive never really played it right i would love to learn it more from a more skilled player sorry for the spelling mistakes im dislecsix

Guys I have a question, Im on DnD Beyond and I made a character and filled out every single section and it keeps telling me it’s incomplete in either class race or ability scores but everything is filled out.
Help?
#ddb-support can help you out.
hello guys, just joined. have only played dnd years ago when i was a kid but i'd like to get back intop it 😄
My message above should help you get started.
yep! done all tutorial already
kinda confused, but im on it
is there a new comers find a group chat or something? 😄
There's no newcomer-specific search for groups.
This is the newcomers chat - but we're a text-only server at this point
But to be specific this chat is for newcomers to ask questions about core game rules and mechanics and for the community to help get you started
No we don't play on this server (see server rules)
But you could potentially find a group to play with in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
sorry, read them an hour ago, must have forgotten
Oh no worries!
i'd like to ask something then, has anyone ever played with goliaths subclasses? are they considered viable or are like just for specific settings?
sry don't know the lingo yet hahaah
Goliath is a race/species (like dragonborn, humans, and elves).
Classes are like fighter, cleric, rogue, and wizard
yeah sorry, meant subrace
But to your question - they are fun species to run with some of their traits
found online a goliath subraces overhaul and i'd like for it to be my first character
just don't know how a gm would take the news
The way the current D&D 5th Edition runs, any race/species will work well for any class you want to try
It's always good to run your character concept by your DM and group you're playing with
Just to make sure it will fit the vibe of the campaign and work well with the rest of the party
oh okay thanksy, i'll try and look for a group then 😄
does a long death monk goliath sound dumb? lol
Sounds like a fun character!
No - it really does sound like a fun character!
Most characters are actually pretty fun - I haven't had one that hasn't worked out well yet.
Both in game mechanics and in just having fun with others at the table.
guess it really depends on each own ability to immerse oneself
i have a question about a skill tho if i might
Right now, goliaths do not have any subraces. In the new Players Handbook which will be releasing in September, there is going to be some. But under the current rules, there is only one Goliath race.
"When you reduce a creature within 5 feet of you to 0 hit points, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier + your monk level (minimum of 1 temporary hit point)." is this effect stackable?
yeah i guessed, you call it homebrew when its made by a player right?
Temporary hit points do not stack
Unfortunately no. Temporary hit points don't stack, so if you gain THP a second time, you'll have to choose which to keep
i see, thank you both
Correct. Homebrew is the term for fan-made content. I would highly recommend avoiding homebrew when you are new to the game
hahaha i'll try my best 😄
what would you say is the best website to create a character online?
i've used dungeon masters vault, kinda complicated
D&D beyond has the most robust toolset, and easy to use interface, in my opinion
It's certainly the simplest method, at least.
ty, i'll have a look
another question... sorry
is it more common to have a milestone campaign or xp based?
Any channel I can ask for ideas / inspo in?
Anecdotally, in my experience, milestone has been the preferred method
In my experience, milestone campaigns are now common. That being said, it's something that your DM will be dealing with, and not something you'll ever have to worry about as a player
ok thank youuu
You'll need to provide a bit more details about what the topic is for us to direct you but also check out #channel-guide to see if there's a particular channel whose topic strikes you as most fitting

hmmm is there any race that gives +2 to wis? cant seem to find
There are no races that specifically give +2 to wisdom by default. However, there optional rules that allow you to change how a race allocates their ability score increases, so you could move a +2 in dex to a +2 in wisdom, for example. And, any race that was published after those optional rules were created allow it by default, so you can pick what ability scores to increase if you are playing as one of those races
oh tank you a lot
also, sorry but im reaaally noob. is there any particular reason to pick a musical instrument apart from story telling?
It's mostly for roleplay flavor, but remember: roleplay is part of the gameplay!
Perhaps you're playing a wonderful tune to a bunch of guards... While your allies sneak into the building unnoticed thanks to your distraction...
In that scenario, your musical instrument proficiency may have helped you overcome an entire combat encounter all at once!
And don't underestimate the value of busking!
Hi I'm new to DND my entire group is decently new and I've decided to be the dm! I'm very excited but also nervous.

I'd recommend this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and the first handful of videos in Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube. Both are pretty practical and will hopefully bolster your confidence.
You can do it!
Firbolg, Githzerai are 2 that gave wisdom
Ah true. I forgot about those. Both are legacy content at this point, but good to point out none the less
I used to see a lot of Firbolg druids
why cant i chat in looking for players or looking for group?

@true musk Thanks, I'll take a look at it later.
Hey question when taking the thife subclass one of its feat Fast Hands, does it give you another bonus action to attack? I ask because the last part almost sounded like that. Use an Object action
Not in actual D&D
BG3 Thieves work differently
The Use an Object action is a specific thing that doesn't include attacking, using magic items, casting spells, etc
Ah thanks for that
To clarify a few things. In general each character gets the following on their turn.
- 1 Movement
- Which allows you to move around the map up to your character's movement speed.
- This movement can be broken up throughout your turn.
- 1 Action
- The following takes an Attack, Cast a spell, Dash, Disengage, Dodge, Help, Hide, Ready, Search, or Use an Object
- 1 Bonus Action
- Certain abilities or spells will specify that it takes a bonus action to use.
- 1 Minor action
- Can be used to open or close a door, draw or sheathe a weapon, pull a level, etc.
Thank you.

Hey! And welcome to the hobby!
The above list of links is a great place to start learning the rules of the game
Regarding finding a game as a minor, you're definitely right in that it can be difficult. I'd recommend checking in with your local games stores, libraries and school to see if there are any existing clubs you could join. Otherwise, you'll have to convince some people from your social circle to give it a go
hi im new to the whole D&D scene and im starting to get into the whole fantasy aspect, is there any groups that play over the internet like on discord etc that would be willing to let me join and learn?
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
Luckily for you there are many, like a loooot of people that play online
After giving the rules a once over, and making your first character (see the bot post above) I'd recommend checking out #find-a-game , or other places online where games can be found like Roll20, various facebook pages, and/or subreddits
...im a bit slow so like..bear with me i only got the character part down🥹
All good! Take it at your own pace and have fun!
is there somewhere i can ask people if my build is ok?

Paladin - fighter with special smite abilities and an aura to buff themselves and allies, limited casting, limited healing with lay on hands ability
Cleric - caster, good at supporting allies from the back and providing healing, can turn undead

Hey y'all, I just decided to try DnD out and I'm not all too sure where to start
I've already gone through the welcome stuff with the websites and everything but I didn't find it much help
I read a lot of the books and have watched YouTube videos it has helped me a lot then I just tried some play throughs with premade characters now I’m working on building my own
Oh fr? I ain't sure if I'm into DnD enough to buy anything but watching others play it probably would help, thanks man
Check the bot links above.
Yep, already have
Once you familiarize yourself with the rules, particularly character creation, then create a character for practice.
Alrighty, thank you 👍
Looking at different races, in the current 5e campaigns how likely would a DM allow me to play as a Giff or Lox?

Check out the Basic Rules, pick a class and a race. Use the standard array for ability scores (that's 15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8 in any order). If you plan to fight up close, you want high Strength, if you plan to shoot you want Dexterity, and if you cast spells you want whichever is your spellcasting ability highest. Try to put at least 10 in Constitution.
Then come share what you've got in #character-discussion !

it'll tell you primary ability, which in this case is charisma - then saving throws which is charisma and wisdom!

You can make a warlock quickly by following these suggestions. First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution. Second, choose the charlatan background. Third, choose the eldritch blast and chill touch cantrips, along with the 1st-level spells charm person and witch bolt.
Might be worth switching Strength and Dexterity.
Wizards very rarely need Strength. Can you get your Intelligence any higher?
Hello all, I am very new to this and would like to learn more about it. I’m open to all suggestions and how to play. What is a good thing to start with on learning?
i think you forgot to choose spells
Take a look at this: #dnd-newcomers message
Typical first steps, glance through the races and classes in the Basic Rules, put one together using the standard array for ability scores (15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8 in the order you want) and share what you come up with in #character-discussion .
Thank you @wild onyx
hello
Hey I just downloaded the game on ps5 does anyone know why the servers aren't working
Are you talking about BG3?
This server is for Dungeons and Dragons, the tabletop game. We don't handle any associated video games or anything like that
Oh ok sorry
We do/did have a thread for BG3 discussion but that's nothing to do with support for it

You're welcome to discuss Neverwinter here in #dnd-media, but if you have a specific support question, you'll probably have better luck on their official site.

Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter, a Free-to-Play MMO based on the D&D roleplaying game and packed with epic tales and adventure.
They also have an official Neverwinter Discord server. A quick search with the Explore Discoverable Servers feature will find it.
It seems like that user has already left this server
hey yall, what site do people use to play text-based dnd on discord?
Depends on the group! Some use DnD Beyond and the Avarae app, for example.
Yeah, I like using Avrae, D&D Beyond, and Owlbear Rodeo.

learning while playing?
The usual recommendation is to start off by reading through the basic rules, linked above! It's common courtesy to understand the basics before getting into a game.
it helped for me and everyone ive played with?
As a DM I would appreciate if a new player would learn the fundamental rules instead of coming to the table with zero knowledge. Constantly pausing the game to teach the new player slows the game down.
oh yeah thats common sense sorry ☺
i meant like, learn the bqsics and then take part in s learner friendly campaign, thats confusion caused on my part
from Eberron there is the mark of shadow elf race, however despite including Eberron as a source on DnD Beyond the mark of shadow elf race doesnt seem to be an option when creating a character? am i doing somethign wrong or somethign?
#ddb-support would be the place to ask about D&D Beyond
thanks
Is it worth listening to some recommended actual play podcasts for examples of how a game should "flow" or are those so scripted that they may not be a useful reference?
Hi everyone, I'm very new to D&D but I know a little and have the Players Handbook ordered. although I'm new, I'm going to be the DM for a game for me and my friends (none of them really know anything about D&D at all). I was wondering if you have to get the DM guide or the Monster manual to be a DM and whether there's a kind of set world to use when you play or whether you can make something completely from scratch? I'll probably have other questions too soon
Actual plays will give you a gist of how things may play out but each table / DM is different from the next. No two DMs are alike, nor are the players.
Read the free Basic Rules to learn the fundamental rules of the game.
That's a take I've never heard from a single other DM in my entire life. Just read the player's handbook and you're fine.
A real session isn't "scripted" because the players and DM act and react to each other. If it's "scripted" then a DM is "railroading" their players...
Most DM's and players I've played with are honestly enthusiastic to explain how stuff works, so you know, read the basic rules and show up and you're already ahead of 70% of players. XD
I was thinking of some of the more popular things I've seen over the years like Harmonquest vs. Critical Role's Vox Machina campaign.
The latter takes time early on to explain why the DM makes whatever ruling about something while the former played out purely on an "is it funny? Then sure!" guideline.
Those are entertainment shows first and foremost and not your typical D&D game.
You'd be better off not watching them at all before playing, imho XD
You do not have to buy those resources to be a dungeon master, although they are very helpful and they also provide a lot more content that you can use.
Many DMs use premade "universes/worlds" for their campaign setting. A lot use the "Forgotten Realms", which is the campaign setting most officially published D&D adventures are set in.
Wizards of The Coast (The makers of D&D) and others also make "Adventure/Campaign Modules", which you can buy (or get for free depending on the module) and run for your players. They contain complete adventures that take your party from a certain level to another. And tell you (the DM) how to run those adventures.
We can call "making something completely off from scratch" homebrewing. You can definitely completely homebrew your own world, including all the creatures, events, and things inside of it. But, as I said, the DMs Guide and the Monster Manual are definitely very helpful.
With that in mind, I recommend checking out the D&DBeyond website. They have some free resources there that you can use, like a free character creator, a free Basic Rulebook (besides the Player's Handbook), and some other things that you may find helpful.
okay, thank you very much! I might look at the modules and use a couple of those before looking at making something up myself for the future and I'll be using d&d beyond for characters and things
Have fun. A little bit of a warning though, some modules are made to be one off adventures, and some are made to be long running campaigns. Some are also meant for beginner DMs & Players, while some are meant for experienced ones. Depending on your preference, you'll need to look into them to make sure you're buying/using the right one for you.
I recommend Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, and Dragon of Icespire Peak, they are all officially published D&D campaign modules that take characters from Level 1 to 3/4/5/6/7. All made to be easy and accessible to new DMs, and I'm sure you'll find it very fun. Enjoy.
Okay, thanks! do you know where I could look at getting a module?
I think I saw a link to the marketplace in either the server rules or the welcome stuff when joining.
okay cool ty :-)
D&D Beyond has digital books (source books and adventures).
Your local game shop and online stores like Amazon sells the physical books.
ooh okay
You can purchase them from DNDBeyond (Digital and/or Physical copy), also in local bookstores. In regards to non-official and third party content, you can find those being sold at their respective creator's patreons or published in their websites. There's also websites selling digital copies of third-party adventures, similar to like Amazon.
Wait no physical books in DNDBeyond anymore?
okay thanks 👌
Yes, you can buy them in the Marketplace but it's still primarily a digital site...
You'll get varying opinions, so here's mine. Feel free to take it with a grain of salt.
I don't find the DMG practical enough for the new DM. It does have useful info, but there are other resources to get you situated starting out. This guide (https://howtogm.guide/) is handy, as is Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). You don't have to watch the whole thing; it's just useful to boost your knowledge and confidence. Justin Alexander's So You Want to Be a Game Master? may also help, at a fraction of the DMG cost.
The Monster Manual is a good source, but you can get a fair bit of mileage out of the monsters in the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/monsters#MonsterStatBlocks).
As for the world, you can use the Forgotten Realms, the setting that many published adventures take place in. Or a different published setting. You can tweak these however you like. Or you can make up your own, pulling from media and stories you enjoy! There's very little in terms of wrong ways to play—if everyone at the table is having fun, including you, you're succeeding.
I think they're worth checking out as a frame of reference (This is one way the game could proceed), but don't take any of them as the way things should go. Like OMYAC said, they're entertainment, but plenty of folks have a better grasp of the game by seeing or hearing it in action.
Thank you very much, that's very helpful

How does creating a charachter really works?
The first 4 chapters of the basic rules are a step by step guide to character creation. Have you tried reading through that yet? What aspect confuses you?
Time to read
hello everyone, i'd have a question
does anyone know why on dnd beyond i can't seem to select a monastic tradition apart from way of the open hand?
That's because Way of the Open Hand is the only free subclass for monk. You'll have to purchase the rest.
oh no i dont
you can only select options from the content you own. That tradition is the one available in the basic rules. Others come from paid sources like the Player's handbook
is there any other ebsite where i can make my character sheets with other tradisions?
i'd simply need a way of keeping things tidy, maybe any suggestion ?
Unfortunately, the remainder of the subclasses are paid content, so the only way you can have legal access to them is if you or a friend of yours has purchased them in some form
not legally. Any paid content should be behind paywalls. If you own the physical books you can always fill out a pdf version of the character sheet, or in cases like roll20 sheets, homebrew the class based off the books
or, as Dosh says, be in a campaign with a friend who has the subscription where their books are shared across their campaigns.
If you own the content through other means such as physical books, you can use things like Google Sheets, or fillable PDFs to type your features into what are basically blank boxes. But any site that provides you with access to the content itself will follow copy write laws and restrict what you can access without payment or proper conent sharing methods
i see thank you a lot
Is it possible or me and my friend to play D&D together, we’re both new and still learning - but we don’t have any friends other than each other 🥲
Sure! All you need to do is find other members to form a group!
If we can’t find other members is it possible to have a campaign with just the two of us?
Sure but most adventures are based around a party of four PCs. You can fill in the roles with sidekicks.
It's possible, just a little trickier. This form of play is called duet. This website is all about it: https://dndduet.com/
If you're expecting to both be player characters, that's not likely to work out with D&D. There are other systems designed for cooperative play like that, however.
DnD traditionally involves a DM and 3-5 players. Every official prewritten module and adventure is balanced around that number of people

hello guys! im new to all of this, i wanted to play with friends but we dont even have a dm, id like to learn how to even start and learn as much as i can.
the mark of shadow elf race has a trait called shape shadows, and says starting at 3rd level you can cast invis spell once with this trait and you regain after long rest, but elves have the trance trait so does it just mean after that? and its doesnt say whether it means i can cast invis without using a spell slot either?
it'd be great if someone explained to me how to start, if i need to do something, read, watch guides, idk, that's fine. just please someone tell me what to do hah
Thanks guys 🙂

thanks! will get to learning soon then.
If a feature does not say that you can also cast the spell using spell slots, then it does not give you that ability. You can cast it 1 time via this feature, and that is it
im confused, so it does or it doesnt use a spell slot?
it does not.
...you can cast the invisibility spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a long rest.
ok thanks
Doesn’t use a spell slot, but the trait slot. Trance shortens the time to need to long rest, but still counts as a long rest. This means elves can take watch an extra shift or use it for other stuff in the night.
"trait slot" isn't a mechanic that exists, they just mean you can use the trait to use the spell
Lets try to avoid made up terms when teaching newcomers how to play
Yeah that’s right, that’s my wrong choice of words. DnDBeyond has these check boxes and I call them slots 😆
English is not my native language, just trying to help but might use the wrong wording for the same principle.
Either way, player can use trait once per long rest
with the invis spell if i just kept casting it just before it ran out would that be constant invis, save ofc like making an attack? also invis isnt cancelled if the character talks or somethign is it?
It's all covered in the rules of the spell
what i can find doesnt say much, just that it ends when target attacks or casts spell, so just wanted to check that like was the only way it would cancel
The invisibility spell defines the exact actions that can end its effect.
The spell ends for a target that attacks or casts a spell.
If you cast Invisibility again before its duration is over, that casting will end the effect of the first spell, which means you will be revealed for a moment before becoming invisible again
ok

um the info i originally found had mark of shadow elf as like a race, but i just looked at eberron thing which i think says that the mark of shadow is a feat, so is it a race or a feat?
Aberrant Dragonmark is the only mark that is a feat. Mark of Shadow elves are a subrace of elves, which are exclusive to the Eberron setting
That's ultimately a question for your DM.
Ultimately, only your DM can answer that.
Yes, if your DM agrees
ah ok thanks
so should i make an entirely new character then in case they dont agree? 😅
It's a good idea to have multiple character concepts and/or be willing to tweak any character to fit the game in question.
Think of this character as your 'practice' character. There's no guarantee that your DM will allow you to use it, but it doesn't hurt to have around!
aw ok was hoping to have like a cool main assasin first character but thanks 😅
The default answer to that question is no. The subrace was designed and balanced to only be used in campaigns set in Eberron. But as other have said, what features/books you can and cannot use is entirely up to your DM. Some people like to make custom settings that take rules and features from various different ones and mash them all together
ok thanks
Worst case scenario: you can just swap to a normal elf for your race and just flavor it as shadowy anyway
You won't get any of the special mark of shadow mechanics, but you can look and act however you want!
ok then
The Shadar Kai elves are a race from Monsters of the Multiverse that are considered to be part of the core rules, so they should be allowed in any setting. They have shadowy powers as well, but not invisibility specifically
also the spells and stuff say they take up 1 action, but like ive vaguely seen dnd games where like the characters just do some more normaly stuff like walking aroudn or whatever so does the 1 action thing only really apply when like in combat or something?
ok thanks ill see if i can tweak my character around that if needed
"1 Action" is the measure of the amount of time it takes to do something. If you are in combat, you can only take 1 action per turn. If you are out of combat, there are no time constraints, so you can do things however and whenever you want (to an extent)
ok thanks, im assuming that means then that if i wanted to keep casting invis on myself when out of combat i can just like hide behind somethign and racast without anyone seeing me and stuff?
Assuming you have enough spell slots, or whatever it is you use to cast it, then yes
cool thanks!
Invisibility is a 2nd level spell, so its not something you can do for free. You can only do it so many times per day
Conceivably, yes. It's up to the DM to determine how difficult doing so is, whether there's enough spots to actually hide, and what in the area is even capable of spotting you
Invisibility also has a verbal component to the spell, so you must say a magical phrase out loud to cast it. So just hiding behind a rock may not be enough, since someone could hear you
hopefully by then tho i may be invisible again already 😁
Can anyone help me with the basics of dnd

if i used minor illusion to make say a magnifying glass woudl it actually work? like if i didnt touch it and it was just floating in the air or on something since interacting would pass right through, but would it still work as a magnifying glass?
Thank u
Illusions to not have any functional or mechanical effects. It would not be able to actually magnify what you see through the "lens"
ok that was just a small curiousity 😅
This is a very fun thought process though! It's a scenario which will get a response from the DM like "Ooh, very clever! But no."
I looked at the find a game tab and no one was there do I go to a different one

Oh!!! my bad :3 I can discuss my 5e campaign here then
So far its going really well, love my Cleric Halfling. Initially she was gonna be a joke character, but I really grew fond of the roleplay and character interaction she has with the rest of the party

Hi came here looking to join and adventure league
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Ok thank you
Why are druids so complicated
And why dosent dnd beyond let you be an artificer but let you be a blood hunter
Druids can get complex because they have whildshape, which requires statblocks of animals, and they are spellchasters, which can be require some book keeping.
As for why artificers are not available, it's because they are not part of the official SRD
thats the fun of druids if played right
Oh thanks I got so overwhelmed looking at all the spells I can learn
In order to access content outside of the SRD you need to purchase the book where that content comes from.
Yeah
Whenever I meet a monster I WILL try a charisma check to take them out
Artificers come from Tashas Cauldron from everything.
If you multi class with a druid and a rouge can you still use metal weapons?
I just started a campaign with my friend and this was his first time being DM and my first time playing so we completely forgot about using damage so I basically just killed everything with any attack above a 15 lol
Multi-classing is a bit too complex for #dnd-newcomers , you best place to get feedback on that is #character-discussion

Sorry
No worries

The bot posts above should have you covered.
hello, i am new and trying to play dnd campaign
are you a dm or player?
player
gotcha, im a somewhat new dm whos very passionate. How old are you BTW, dont need specifics just a range would be nice
i am totally new to dnd so i need all the help i can get, i use dnd beyond app btw
k thats great
before starting a campaign do players sit with the dm and chat about how their character should be like?
please don't disclose exact ages.. it's against the rules of the site for protecting personal information. people can specify age ranges but no one should ask for, nor provide their precise age
ohh ok sorry i just joined the server today
no worries at all 🙂
Hai new dndbean here lol, I've only had experience with joining late game with a friends group, that's done now, but am still learning the ropes. I only have the MotM book on dnd beyond and a few characters for fun til I have a game to join(never did the physical copy part) but I do have set of dice, but have did dnd stuff on roll20, but dont have any books on roll20, and stuff still learning...aside from watching critical role season 1 and working on season 2 n.n but yeah hai o/
Need any advice or have questions?
Btw on dnd beyond the DM can share their purchases for a character you make in their campaign
I’d watch the dungeons dudes subclass tier list guide on classes and you can google any subclass you don’t have purchased to figure out more on your own

what happens to a warlock's psudo dragon when his master dies
Yeah I watched them learning about bugbears and artificers, and other things. They are awesome!...still learning, but have some cool ideas n.n
Still learning
Apparently nothing, by the rules. They just don't have someone they have to obey anymore.
Got a quick question, When I am doing an attack roll, I do 1d20+(Proficiency bonus+ ability modfier) right?
What do i do when i am doing damage not attack
you roll whatever damage the attack says it is
It’ll depend on the damage of the weapon ie short sword is 1d6+dex
Dagger: 1d4+ dex/str
^ Note if it’s a finesse weapon you can use strength or dexterity for damage
Is it okay to get armor above your grade/level like dragon-types?
What do you mean above your level
You can buy or acquire better arms and armour as you play but that’s upto your DM as to what items are available in his world
@odd bobcat You might want to start by looking at the basic rules

Alr I understand.
Okay so ehm im having trouble with the concept of commisions in dnd world. Like think a midieval ish type world and one goes to a fletcher (i think thats what its called) and ask to have a commision done (lets say a set of leather armour) whould the customer in question be the one suppling the material for the armour? what determains the amount of material and kind of material needed? If it is the fletcher who should supply the material will there be two costs; one for material and one for work? If a customer comes in with a supply of leather and asks to get a leather armour made will he not pay the material part of the fee and only pay for the fletchers work? Should the fletcher pay the customer for the material they brought? What if a customer comes in, gives the material and doesnt want a commision, just wanted to sell of leather, would the fletcher pay him for the leather?
some of this might seem totally obvious but honetstly not to me what so ever-
That's not really a newcomer question, try #dm-world-building
okay thanks!
Hi, I am new to dnd and dont know where to start?
Take a look at this: #dnd-newcomers message
Typical first steps, glance through the races and classes in the Basic Rules, put one together using the standard array for ability scores (15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8 in the order you want) and share what you come up with in #character-discussion .
thanks!

I'm sure I'm the 100 millionth person to ask this, but any recommendations on a good campaign to start with for my first time playing? I've seen Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, Lost Mine of Phandelver, and Dragon of Icespire Peak thrown around quite a bit as beginner friendly. I've got a few friends that will play and an one experienced DM, but everyone else is relatively beginner. You can DM me if you like:)
Yes, those. Perils of Pinebrook is also given as a real starter adventure.
I have the Dragon of Icespire Peak as a gift from someone two Christmases back but haven't found anyone to play it with.
All of those are supposed to be very beginner friendly, so if you have a group have the GM study the materials so they know how to guide everyone and have fun!
My only other concern is I'm hoping to start off with a relatively shorter campaign. Maybe less than 5 sessions or something. Is that possible with any of these?
Ooh I'll look into this one as well
My guess after studying tge one I have is that should be easily possible unless your entire group is going to roll checks on every little thing the GM describes to them or something.
Ah I see. From looking around on reddit the one I see most often is Lost Mine of Phandelver, I just got a bit worried because some users were saying it took around 15 sessions lol
LMoP is a larger adventure, yes. The exact length will depend on many things like playstyle, amount of players, etc. Peril in Pinebrook is very short, likely able to be completed in a single evening (again, depending.)
Is a longer campaign really a problem?
Might be good as an opportunity for the group to get to try things and really get into their characters/etc.?
Is Peril in Pinebook beginner friendly? I haven't looked into that one
That's fair, my only issue is to go play with the group I have to fly out, so I really only have a week or two at max to play this time around
It sure is, it is explicitly for beginners! Comes with pre-gen characters as well.
Do note that Peril in Pinebrook does not use full D&D mechanics. It's a cut down set of rules designed for classrooms
Ooh okay I'll check it out. Most of us really haven't played any sort of rpg or the sorts, so it might be good to play with a dumbed down rule set. Even with regard to character creation, I've heard it's pretty daunting starting out. Thank you all!

Hello, can someone help me make a character? I already made one in Dnd Beyond, but I want someone to make sure it's well done
Sure, pop over to #character-discussion and post your sharing link.
How do I post the sharing link, I only have the pdf.
Little follow up- I'm having a bit of trouble finding Peril in Pinebrook online. I don't see where I can buy or download it. I can't find it on the DnD website either, a little help?
Here's the link for Peril in Pinebrook: https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf
It's a large file, so it may take a while to load.
Sick, thank you
Dang, i dont get how to make a charachter
The manual confuses me, anyone that could help?
Can you be specific about which part is confusing you? We're more than happy to answer any questions you have but we can't walk you through the process from start to finish
The value sistem
"value system" is not a D&D term. Are you referring to your ability scores?
Yes
What exactly is confusing for you?
I get how to give the points, but then there are the modifiers and i get stuck
There should be a chart in the player's Handbook that tells you what modifiers you get on each Stat based on score/points assigned to it.
But if you're using DnD Beyond or similar app, it should add them for you automatically.
Here is the link to that table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Some modifiers were asked to be added in the app
Thanks 👍
I keep seeing it in the various ads for games and such, but, what the hecks is West March games?
Westmarch servers are basicly open world servers with many DM's playing oneshots or working together for a story. They are mostly played over text using Avrae but there are also some who play via VTT's and voice
just a quick question about the character creating process, what do i put on ideals and bonds?
it's probably a dumb one but i still couldn't connect the dots
Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws have no mechanical effect. They exist as role play prompts. You can fill them in as a reminder to yourself or as a way to get your creativity flowing, to help you stay in character while playing the game.
Ideals are beliefs that your character holds strongly like “every man is created equal” or “the strong should rule the weak” and bonds are things that your character holds dear or has a connection to, like friends, family, their homeland, an organization they are a part of, etc
oooh okay! thank you so much!
have a nice day :)
i think i'm ready to find my first game now...
If you look at some of the available backgrounds you will find a table that that highlights the examples of ideals, bonds, and flaws that reflect that particular background.
Does anyone have recomendations for sites to play solo? (sorry if my english is bad)

@limber moon in here!
Thank you!
While D&D does have RP.
It is a tabletop role playing game (TTRPG) to be specific.
So it comes with game mechanics and rules to ground what’s possible.
sooo I guess it's just the systems that's the biggest difference then?
The biggest difference between D&D and general RP is combat, of course, and all the rules that go with that.
But outside of combat, the biggest difference would be Ability Checks. Whenever you do something, if there is a reasonable chance that thing could either succeed or fail, then your DM will ask you to roll an ability check.
Your DM will decide how difficult your task is, and secretly assign it a number from 1-30. You roll a d20, and add some modifiers to that role based on your character's stats and any abilities you have. If that total is greater than or equal to the number your DM assigned to the task, then you succeed. If your total is below that number, then you fail.
That’s just the start of the difference as Colossus just mentioned. You can also check out the dnd overview video that I linked.
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Is a tiefling barbarian an okay match up?
Hi 👋🏿 I lost my journey bring me here.
Sounds fun! Karlach from BG3 (Baldur's Gate 3, a video game based on 5e) is exactly that!
Oh sorry for wrong chanal @solemn light
Sorry for the ping Saw this the other day not sure if you want to add it it your solo play suggestions https://obviousmimic.com/en-gb/collections/solo-adventure-books-pdf
Could be totally awesome! Best part about the game is getting creative with your characters and building what you're most interested in!
Have characters got to be prepped before hopping into a group or?
Yo
I tend to prefer players make a character with the group for a game, and not have a fully premade one they want to play before seeing how it fits.
But you can always come up with ideas and taylor them to a game once you've joined.
Oh cool!
No worries for the ping
I'll add it to the list

Ok
ik that the artificer can make some like firearms, but can they make a sniper? and if so how would it work? (like fire rate, range, accuracy, proficciency needed in it or anything like that?)
Artificers do not have the ability to craft any item they want. At least, no more so than any other character. Their class feature for Infusions is a list of magical effects that you choose from, and you place that magical effect onto an already existing non-magical item
Are you thinking of the Repeating Shot Infusion? That’s the closest you can get to making a “firearm” without using normal item or magic item crafting rules which are available to virtually every character
They don’t. Firearms are not a thing that Artificers can make, as a part of their class features.
I mean they can make mortors I think
One of the artificer subclasses, Artillerist, has a feature called “arcane firearm” but if you read what the effect actually does, it just adds 1d8 damage to cantrips you cast with a wand
The closest you could get to crafting a “sniper” would be to use the normal item crafting rules to make a musket from the DMG, provided your DM allows that.
The only mortar in 5e is a magic item from the Ravnica book.
You are probably thinking of the Eldritch Cannon from the Artillerist subclass
It’s not really a “mortar” per se. The version of it that fires a projectile is called a “force ballista.” It fires a projectile that deals force damage. You can flavor that however you want, of course, but it’s more of just a magical attack that a traditional gunpowder firearm. Though it can be handheld if you choose
Oh I really wanted a sniper 😢
Remember it's up to the DM if they allow fireams in their campaign.
Imo Artificier class is rather narrative, like Warlock. If you want firearms - you should ask your DM. My Artificier character's dream was to create a hyperpower hammer with engines. I was claiming artefacts, materials, which in the future would help me to create a hammer, and then i asked my DM what should i do to create it
Things like this can be a fun bit of role play, but there are no rules or game mechanics that cover it, which means it’s certainly beyond the basics of the game, which means it would be a topic for a different channel
which?
Maybe #character-discussion
Depends on what aspect of the conversation you want to focus on.
If you're trying to create something with a mechanical effect and want to balance it, then that's #homebrew
If you want to brainstorm idea about your character's potential goals and motivations about what they might want to craft in the future, then that's #character-discussion
If you want to talk more generally about what kind of things artificers should be allowed to craft, and what role crafting has in D&D, then perhaps #dnd-discussion
Hey is there a free version of the players guide on here? I know nothing about anything 😂

i have a question
im from argentina and here its not the same hour that in USA or UK}
so
the hour the game says it starts its in USA hour?
The game post should indicate which timezone it is. If it doesn't, leave a message in the thread or contact the person who posted it directly to clarify.
oh ok, thank you so much
Does dnd have a lot of rules if so is there a rulebook or smth i can read to get famiiliar with them
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Yeah, i started teaching 18 kids (ages 10-13) D&D this week with a printout of the Basic Rules and those HH videos. It is going fairly well. So I can back up Old man on those suggestions.
Thanks im watching the vids rn
howdy yall, i really want to get in to D&D so i can eventually DM for a setting based off the Heavy Metal (1981) inspired world i have in my head
and also i have a tube of dice i need to find a use for
and also i want to have something fun to occupy my time with and make new friends :D
yo all i am a never played before player looking for a group that would welcome a newb lol, i have created a dnd beyond character but am pretty much clueless lol, i like critical role and baldurs gate so wanted to give it a try! hope to join your campaigns soon!
same, been playing BG3, wanting to try the real thing
@agile kiln @torpid mortar Feel free to check out this servers #find-a-game channel if you're ready to start looking for online games. You can also look in Roll20, Facebook pages, and subreddits for other ways people get players together
thanks! i made a post in the looking for dm
I’m so nervous because soon I’m gonna be playing dnd with my friends for the first time. I’m the dungeon master, and I’m watching a ton of YouTube videos on what to do so I have a bit of an idea but I feel like there’s sm I don’t know and am not prepared for, it’s a little daunting. Is there any like key things I should know or somewhere I can find info abt it
Running a prewritten one-shot or hardcover would be your best bet. I'd recommend scrolling through the DMs Guild for short-ish adventures that take your fancy for a low-cost entry point into DMing without having to prep the adventure yourself
Alternatively you could put some money into something a bit more high quality with the Candlekeep Adventures hardcover, which contains a bunch of one-shot adventures in the single book
I would point you toward this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and Matt Colville's "Running the Game" videos (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). The thing is you will make mistakes, but that's okay. The point is to have fun, you and your players. Do that and you've succeeded!
I have some DM advice here (#dnd-newcomers message), and you can find plenty of other similar conversations around the server by searching for dm tips and/or dm advice.
I bought the starter kit with the blue dragon!!
ah lovely, Stormwreck is a fantastic option too
Thank u I’ll look at those
Quick question, when a spell has multiple spell components (ie. S,M V,S V,S,M), does it require all three or only one to be casted?
It requires all of the listed components.
ok, thanks!
What do you need help with?
Character creation
And also never played
Have you read the basic rules yet? They're free and linked in this channel's pins, along with the Handbooker Helper video supplement
The first 4 chapters of the basic rules cover character creation

You may have joined the wrong server. This is for Dungeons & Dragons the tabletop RPG, not a video game. You might find help in the game's relevant server, or if you decide to stay here you might find use in #non-dnd-topics
Can you clarify what you mean?
This is the official server for the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game.
Hello, everyone. I'm here because I'm new to this server, and DnD as a whole. I'm hoping to make some extraordinary friends and find a place where I belong c: I welcome PM's too
This is THE DnD server.
Not a server regarding a DnD video game.
oh my lord 😭 i joined earlier and didn't even see this channel .. but hiii, im shiloh
im very new to dnd and i was initially interested because i got into baldurs gate 3
i also just love fantasy and making my own characters
Ooooo welcome!
As long as you don’t mind reading, you’ll do perfectly fine in actual DnD.
I do hope so, I'm very nervous about joining a campaign eventually lol
First few sessions are always a bit awkward especially if you aren’t used to role playing. But once you get comfortable it’s an incredible experience. Also hope you find a good table/group
i roleplay a tonnn, i just have anxiety so doing infront of more than like. 1 person issss definitely something for me lol, but thank you!
#learn-to-play and the pins in this channel
can a shovel be used for magic channeling?
Sorry you got lost in the shuffle luci
its alright
You becoming some kind of shovel knight?
a dwarf wizard with a shovel for a staff actually
just an idea
dont know if i need this much flavor for my first ever session this weekend
i was thinking if i should choose the school of necromancy or not
a staff that looks like a shovel and the user is a necrotic wizard
a shovel might help too lol
So me and my friends are new to DnD, and I have chosen to be our DM. I have previously moderated some one-shots and would now like to DM something larger, maybe even a full campaign. With that said; any recommendations for newbie-friendly campaigns, preferably not to long?
Ok I found the right place
So I literally just started making a character so far he's an hunter half elf who likes animals of all sorts

And I was thinking what his cool background could be and I have one question
Are dinosaurs in dungeons and dragons
I'm here to help if possible, and yes they are.
At Ranger 9th level you could even summon some of them with an spell.
Sounds really cool.
So until level 9 I can't use it in battle correct but he can still be apart of the story
You could face a dinosaur as part of your backstory, that's your story.
More of like a friend along the journey
Sure but won't be a pet that could do things in combat unless your DM allows it or you have it as just flavor with no mechanical effect.
Botta have dreadnoughtius as my bff frfr (jkjk)
Funny thing is I have no DM so unless bro is cool with this character ima have to make a new one or tweak it out lmao
Hello there! I’M AN ARTISSSST
Hello, I am so sorry to interrupt, I am the new and bad at group chats. I'm just looking for help to get into dnd I suppose, I've been trying for a.. decently long time, but I've never been here so

So if the DM is cool with it off rip I can use it in battle? Otherwise I'll have to wait until level 9 to learn the spell
Feel free to ask, I could help you as far I'm here
The options of the 3th Level spell Conjure Animals, the spell I mentioned is limited too. I recommend to work with the DM directly to have them as a pet or steed, would be more balanced and tied with the DM world building.
Thank you so much :0 I think part of my struggle is any campaign I've found to join hasn't lasted more than a session. Those people I'm sure have their own things going on, but as I'm learning how to roleplay and get into character and stuff, a lot of people make me nervous, but I can't seem to find campaigns for like 2 to 3 people who are preferably also mildly confused
Hi all. Started playing in 2013 but took a loooonnnnggg break and just started up again recently. I currently play a ridiculous halfling bard. Glad to be here!
Some campaigns are planned to last for one session, a One Shot. If you're looking for a long campaign we have #find-a-game.

Ah ok so I can't be like "gmsummon_StarDestroyer"
No I know, those types actually might be good to start, because the ones I tried were meant to be longer, and yeah, I'm beginning to figure out how that chat works 😅 I didn't know you had to click on them to find the chats
hello!
is it a better idea to wait to hear about a campaign i am going to be a part of from my DM and make a character for it, or to just make a character/characters and choose which might be best for the campaign?
Wait
Certain things may not be included in a campaign
Make it once you know for sure
And heed any warning they might give about certain choices
ok
Makes sense

Once you've read through the basic rules or Player's Handbook, all you need are a way to roll dice and some friends to play with!
