Have you checked #looking-for-community? These are other D&D servers and they may have different types of D&D games that may better fit your needs and schedule.
Because adults are generally (and rightly) discouraged from closely socializing with unknown children.
Hi
Hey there!
If you're new to D&D check out the pinned messages here in the channel and feel free to ask any specific questions you have here or in an appropriate channel.
I just saw the previous messages above me, do I have to be 18+ to play?
No - there are some groups that are actually 13-18 range (folks generally like to play with folks around their age). That said, being under 18 can make it more challenging to find a group to play with.
Do you have any questions about D&D?
Yeah, the claim that “every” campaign is 18+ was exaggerated.
D&D itself has no real age limit.
Yo I am new and need some help making a character I would be thankful
Have you read the basic rules yet? They’re linked in this channel’s pins and cover character creation
Nah thanks for letting me know

Don't reveal your age. It's actually against the server rules.
Ok

Can I use sneak attack and booming blade on the same attack?
Hello!
Hi
If you use a melee weapon that has the finesse property, yes.
i think i might be an idiot, but "spellcasting ability" and "spellcasting ability modifier" are the same thing right?
Ability is the ability used for spellcasting, like Charisma, Wisdom, etc. Ability modifer would be the modifer attached to the ability
I'm sorry to have used the word ability so many times 😅
its fine, and thanks lol
Hello!
hey im like completely new, can anyone give like a simple explanation of what the difference between like a wizard and a warlock is?
Narratively, a wizard studies spells, while a warlock gets their abilities by serving some powerful creature.
Mechanically, wizards have the broadest selection of spells in the game, which lets them prepare for all sorts of different scenarios.
Warlocks don’t get as many spells, but the class gives them a number of other choices for a lot of flexibility.
thank you!
At 4th level how many spell slots does a warlock have?
what would be a good starting feat for a storm cleric?
never played one before so not sure what to pick
Any idea on what kind of oath you wanna play? Your main stats on paladin are (I believe) charisma for casting and then strength or dex for your melee
Is there an oath that gets fireball?
Ooooh, I don't know off the top of my head but I don't think so?
oh ... hm...
I can check real quick
I just want to hit things in combat
Oh paladins hit things all the time
Paladins can be good frontliners in combat, especially with their smites
It seems that paladin on its own cannot get fireball, but multiclassing could get it for ya if you want fireball
oooh okay
What makes paladin your first choice? If fireball is one of your big goals you could always go sorcerer or wizard (there are a bunch of other ways too, just weirldy enough paladin isn't one of them lol)
im learning dnd
im not new but im not an expert
Very fair!! Paladin can be a blast
Well, I played a fighter/druid, a few rogues, and a barbarian
but i want to get into paladin
I think the fighter/druid will have prepared you well for paladin then
I'd say read the paladin class stuff and see if any of it confuses you, but tbh it doesn't seem like it'll be too bad for you. Maybe divine sense and lay on hands would be slightly confusing but they aren't too bad
lay on hands is the one where its 5 times the level healing?
ooooh okay
It's a super useful ability
Im rlly new to this thing, uhh.. I thought it’s pretty cool but I still have no clue..

If anyone can offer any sort of guidance of how to begin this, that’d be rlly great

What are you struggling with
The beginning and overall concept
and ion get how y’all join in games and stuff
I have a Local Game Store that hosts DnD one shots
What are those
a Local Game store is a game store that is local
One shots is the session is the story with no campaign or overarcing story
though i do have a few that have a bigger story
You can also go to #find-a-game
Any luck thus far?
Been reading a few things on google!
trying to fill out a character sheet

Awesome!! I hope it all makes sense upon looking it up!
DndBeyond.com is really useful for newbies!
What’s a dice??😅😅
OH THANKS ILL LOOKO AHTAT UP
Y'know the thing you play monopoly with?
ME TOO
That but with more and less sides
1d20 is one 20 sided die
Yeah there's a set of 7!
I'm not allowed to show pics here
But #ddb-support will help you with dnd beyond
If you look up "dnd dice set" you'll see a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and a percentile die (d100)
Yeah that^
So how do I use the d100?
You roll the d100 and a d10
so thats its only use? to make a percent?
If it's physical dice, dnd beyond rolls both for you
There's other uses, but it's mainly for percentages, yes
what are the other uses?
Loot tables typically
Stuff for DM's or wild magic tables
Same, but i've watched it
Excuse m, but does anyone want to start a campaign for people who have just started. I am new to the game.
Check #find-a-game
Thank you OldManYellingAtClouds, this act was greatly appreciated.
Hello
Hello
Im new to dnd ive only played about 48 hours
Two twelve hour sessions and three 8 hour sessions
I just got my first dice i got 13 sets
That is alot of dice
My dad has like 50 sets lol
What is good advice for a player going into their first DnD game?
Read you character sheet and abilities, don’t worry about making mistakes, have fun
Is dnd beyond good? I use fight club for everything except my first character
I like it, good for looking up spells quickly and managing my character
How does someone who has only played once become a DM but knows how to play DM
The DM is the person who arbitrates the rules and plays as everything who is not one of the PCs while also often narrating the long bits away. If you use a pre-made adventure and are with a table who is willing to slow down while you look up a rule you don't even need to have ever played.
The right personality would help though?
Yes, but which is the right one, there are so many different tables out there.
How do I get into a game of dnd?
Hi, I'm completely new to the game and I've been going around on the web to learn the very first basics of D&D. However, I still couldn't get a single thing into my head. Even from the lore of the game itself to the Great Wheel cosmology, I can't get how they work.
So if anyone can, can you tour me around on this vast world? I'll try to understand at my best.
#find-a-game is the best option, so you can try to find something that would fit for you
I know folks are generally happy to help answer questions.. the more guidance you can give us into what confuses you, the more we can help. Generally "everything" is too broad of a base.
Have you watched things like Handbooker Helper on Youtube? they tend to break key game concepts up into bite size videos. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN is their playlist
always feel free to ask questions.. pause a video if something confuses you, maybe we can help clarify
Thank you, I'll try.
One thing new players do a lot is overstate the importance of lore. I recommend starting with the basic rules instead
They’re linked in the pinned messages
At it’s core, dnd is the rules, not the lore
You can apply plenty of different settings and lore to it and it’ll still be dnd, as long as you use the rules
hey so i wanna dm a game or one shot but i’m worried about finding things awkward in case of age gaps etc because i’m younger than quite a lot of people
i’ve done my research and i’ve made my resources etc
i know about #750812887697588356 but i’m honestly just scared it’s gonna be awkward
Hey weird question is solo dungeon and dragons a thing?
Technically yes, but the game is definitely not designed to do that. Some fans have written alternate rules for how to play solo, but you obviously won’t be able to do any real role play when playing that way. It will just be combat and dungeon crawling.
If you want a TTRPG that can be played solo, I’m sure there are other options out there better suited for it that D&D
hey idk where to ask this, but i want a DM to teach/optimize my game. not like everything. also i may even propose payment
i think you can get alot of advice here for free
I understand that, and tried it. there's a lot of aspects that am working on.
i may overdid my first homebrew campaign. and i need to control it before it become a new ttrpg
oh you are making a new system
that what i found myself doing mid way. and i really just want help.
hello friends! what is your favorite spell, why is it arms of hadar?
It’s not arms of hadar for me
It’s hard to say but probably something like wall of force? Much easier to answer per level
delayed blast fireball, my beloved
you cannot give excellent hugs with fireball or wof
nothing make peoples hearts burn like delayed blast fireball
Arms of hadar is murder hugs
like i said, the majority. i would literally have to scan my whole campaign and rules.
i tried in text, it's hopeless. am open to pay a dm for two hours if it meant just to work those things with me.
any advice?
As Wayne Gretzky liked to say "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take"
Dms have already taken the first step to reach out and post. Replying in thread when you are interested in their game gives you a shot at thr table. You don't need to give your life story in the first go.
First reply is the hardest but it's not really much different than posting here. It's just in a thread.
That is a great question for #dm-discussion - also note that you can (and should) have more than one encounter in an "adventuring" day (doesn't have to be combat encounters). You want the players to be expending their class resources (spells, feaatures, etc.) so that encounters also invlove "can my character do this and still have enough juice in case something else comes up?".
hey guys
New to Dnd like super new and was wondering how do a new player go about finding a campaign?
I do have a condition so I can’t speak but my friend with me can so idk how it would work with me
Well I'd first recommend getting some understanding of the game rules - check the pinned messages here in the channel.
As for speaking - there are some D&D games/campaigns that use Play By Post which is just text-based.
i never played d&d so uh yeah

ty
We all have different ways we prefer to play D&D. Make sure your wants are also accounted for.
As for finding a group to play with - please read #find-a-game carefully as it has useful information and important instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels to find games.
Since D&D is a social game and involves coordinating folks schedules to meet and play... yeah finding the right group that also plays at a date/time that you can make can be challenging.
I would recommend spreading your search wide (check Demiplane, Roll20, other D&D/TTRPG servers and forums, even local libraries/schools, game stores, comic book stores, etc.) and being patient.
No D&D is better than bad D&D.
I see your points notes taken
Still have no idea what type of character or class I wanna use so many choices like man how can anyone make up their minds
Funny enough, DnDBeyond's character builder tool has a randomizer feature...
It's how I ended up with a Duergar Soulknife Rogue for a Curse of Strahd campaign...
You could make a random table of possible race and class choices and roll against those if you want.
What is some practical advice to give for first-time DnD players?
When making a character, whether it is for a one-shot or an ongoing campaign, it is important to create a character that is compatible with the campaign and has an inherent reason from the beginning to be an active participant in the game.
The character in question is one I specifically cooked up for the campaign
In the briefest answer What is the campaign? What is the character? And what makes the character an active participant in the campaign?
The campaign is one I'm unsure of beyond the few snippets my DM has given me
The character is a High Elf sorcerer, and she's in the campaign because it seemed interesting
what makes the character an active participant in the campaign?
what are her motivations to be in the party though, what is making her actively go for the campaigns objective with the group?
Well, she's Chaotic Neutral, emphasis on the Chaotic
She just does what seems the most entertaining at the time
That doesn't really answer the question.
what makes the party entertaining, build up on her personality and what she likes
why did she make the decision to follow them
For the entertainment
but what is the entertainment is what I'm asking
Frankly, I'm cooking up most of it as I go
it's your first time playing?
Yeah
For example a character that owns a small business they built with their parents and want to continue the business is great for a campaign where a bandits are going to attack a small town.
Not so much for a campaign where the party travels the world to collect artifacts.
The character currently is a saleswoman selling random fake magical artifacts to whatever sucker is willing to buy them
you could just go for the fun of it then, bullshit your way through but try to stay in character and analyse her decision not just through the lens of being chaotic but what makes her chaotic
Also if this is for a campaign you should have a session zero.
Session 0 questions to ask.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
unrelated but, did you just type all that or did you have it ready?
goddamn
I had them already.
that's cool

hru?
Welcome to the hobby
The bot post above has a great resources to help you get started.
Try out the demo, read the basic rules (at least the first 4 chapters that cover character creation), and check out the Handbooker Helper videos if you're more of a visual learner.
besides dealing with the anxiety of looking for a table on a different language than what I'm used to filled with people I don't know I'm perfectly fine, what about you?
i'm anxious too, idk much english but always thought about how would be like a campaign in another language? English is not my native language
With such a character it will help to have specific answers to these questions, particular for an ongoing campaign.
Does the character have a reason why she wants or needs to travel with a party?
Does the party have a reason why they want or need her in the party?
we're on the same boat then, that's cool
yes!
The best way to ensure good game experience is to communicate with the people you'll want to try playing with.
are you looking foward to dming or being a player?
Whats the curse of strahd?
It's an adventure for D&D

So is a druid plus rogue possible?
sorry!
Multiclassing is possible but not really recommended for new to D&D folks as it adds adidtional complexity to the character.
Thought a stealth based druid would be cool
You could make a stealthy druid with just a normal druid build and keeping your dexterity high and taking the Pass Without Trace spell...
Thinking of using goblin for it because don’t need rogue to do hide action after an attack i was reading
Druid with rogue is kind funny, i already did this and was good. I was the heir of beggar king from the city
Folks in #character-discussion can help with suggestions/advice on specific character builds you're thinking about.
Is dnd the type of game support / healing beats just pure damage?
Not really - usually damage outpaces any healing
Healing rarely covers the damage taken. especially consistently as you lose spell slots using them, so the healer role isn't like some RPGs where you need a dedicated healer
Healing can be extremely useful - but as far as combat encounters go, it's best to focus on downing the enemies as efficiently as possible.
But not everything is combat encounters as well.
you can get your healing numbers to compete with a characters damage numbers but considering that you will be fighting many enemies they will simply roll more dice than you. healing tends to be more about WHEN and HOW you use it rather than how much you can do.

dont really know sorry, im just really new, maybe just things in general?
Check out the link above. There's a bunch of good resources linked there
And if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!
Hey im like completly new, the weapons that elf uses like the longsword and all, they have their stats or is just your characters stats?
Also, the weapons can be created by yourself or theres like a guideline or something that tells you what weapons they can have?
The above is not really accurate. Damage always outpaced healing
All weapons have set stats but your ability scores determine how well you can use them and if you don't have profiency, you can't use them.
If you havent, start with the basic rules

Hello
Starting my first campaign soon (excited and nervous) and we're going to be playing Descent into Avernus with a party of 7. How much of the world of Baldur's Gate/Faerun should i learn before i go into the campaign?
How much should i learn about ANY D&D setting before i go into a campaign set in that location?
simply because you're in a setting doesn't mean that everything that "canonically" exists there will exist in your campaign
The DM decides what's canon at their table. I use the Forgotten Realms campaign setting but I decided to ignore the 4E lore (which was mostly reverte by 5E anyway).
I'd brush up on the lore at large, but that isn't information your specific character would even know.
I would ask your DM what your character knows about the setting.
Hello I'm new to dnd anyone got any tips
i will do that! thank you!

I'm not sure if I did my character sheet right 😭

Okie!
anyone have any tips on getting into a a game
i feel like ive DMed so many people and still havent gotten a single response
When did you apply?
how long does it usually take for a dm search take ?
Tip #1 from my perspective as a DM: Start off with at least something other than just the super common "Hi" or "I'm interested", and give something for the DM to respond off of. Everyone messaging the DM is clearly interested, so try to stand out by for example telling them something of your experience or just yourself
The DM is gonna get a lot of people wanting to get into the game as there are so many more players than DMs, so it can take a while
ive just been telling them im new and just trying to test the waters ig
sure glad i made mine bland
lol
i've been considering playing the game since i was like a forever DM irl so yeah lmao
welp this is more of a #dnd-discussion thing now so uh yeah
bro same with me but my verson of dm was just improving on a discord call with like 2 friends
hello! i am very new to dnd and know basicly nothing, but it sounds like so much fun and i would love to learn! my name is aqua :) its lovely to meet you all!
Hey hi guys! I am playing a fighter, and I will soon have to choose my new level subclass.
I am not sure between the three the PHB lets you choose (our Master wanted to stick to that for simplicity sake).
Know that I am a archery style fighter, and I have in 14 in Intelligence, so Eldritch Knight is actually a option. But I also saw battlemaster, and everybody tells me it's broken. Champion seemed kinda mid. Any ideas for what I should choose?

Thank you!
Battlemaster isn’t broken, however it is one of the stronger fighter subclasses. Champion is very weak, and will often feel pretty useless. Eldritch knight is also pretty decent, although not as strong as battlemaster imo. Both battlemaster and eldritch knight will add a bit of complexity, which you could see as a good or a bad thing.
Keep in mind that as an eldritch knight you’re still a weapon user first and foremost, you just have some spells to chuck in when needed
Yeah, I know.
My party composition is a cleric, a monk and me. I am currently the chonkier boy, but still, I am an archer at core.
So, I am really undecided between the two. Does battlemaster have anything that could boost my archery focued skills?
you and me both, i literally bought a starter set today 😭
(The main reason why eldrich knight is even in the equation is because of my INT score of 14)
Wow! I didn't know there was a starter set :0
yeah you get an adventure booklet , a rule book for characters lvl 1 - 3 , some pregenerated characters to get you started and some game die
Still, I am thinking battlemaster is the better choice. Unfortunately my DM uses PHB content only, so Booming Blade is totally out of the equation
Sweet!
I am an human artificer, and Im gonna pick my subclass soon, but i don't know what to choose, I've been thinking either armourer or battle smith but it's hard to decide, any suggestions?
Folks in #character-discussion might have some ideas
Kk
Question on Echo Knight, if my echo gets killed, is there a time limit before I can summon it again?
Nope. As soon as you can use a bonus action on your turn, you can summon it again
And it can be summoned up to 15 ft away right?
Question, can one of my dnd ocs be half elf and half fox? Can I make my own race?
Up to your DM
Thanks!

Okay sorry I'm new here
No worries! We ask that folks don't use the regular discussion channels for trying to find a game as it's off-topic. For instance this channel is for new to D&D folks to get help getting started and learning how the game mechanics work.
can someone inspect my character? i just made it and have never played so i don’t know if i accidentally made it broken or didn’t do it properly just want to check
Hey is fight club good?
I can probably help out
awesome can i dm you?
Go for it!
The mobile app? Fight Club 5e? Yeah it's pretty decent. It only comes with the SRD (free basic rules) materials but it's pretty easy to use and pretty flexible too. Easy to add in new things an/or customized things.
That said if you have any further questions about it (or other third-party tools) please use #third-party
Anyone willing to be a DM for an Avatar the Last Airbender campaign?
i would make a post in #750812887697588356
look for posts in ^
Ok thx
Also might be worth looking into the TTRPG of the Last Airbender series.
I’ve tried that no one responded
But it was a good idea
Hello! I was looking to get into DND and be a bard.
I want to be in a group with a DM and play online. I'm a very available person
if youre looking to be a player #looking-for-players will show you DM's trying to run a campaign
It says I dont have that in my channel list
I would be more than happy to submit my dnd resumee lol
double check Channels & Roles at the top of the list
if that doesnt work see if you can get into #find-a-game
Okay thank you
Hey I kinda got interested in this DnD stuff but i have no idea on where to start
can anyone help?

Yep there we go lol
i was gonna say
A place to start you say? Look no further
that works xD
Thanks!
would love to , i’m a huge atla fan but i’m really inexperienced, so i’m gonna have to pass
Do you know anyone who could DM
Already did that
Ah
no sorry, i joined this server today, good to see other atla fans tho
I would recommend checking out your local game store to see if they have any D&D games on going or if a campaign has ended
You might be able to pitch the idea of ATLA
Usually in the beginning a dm will never feel like they have enough experience. There's only one real way to get a lot of it
(youtube tutorials help lol)
i might try this too, not for atla but just to join in and give it a try
gotta have patience friend, ppl post there daily
haven’t had my first game yet so i’m very excited for when i do
They are a lot of fun
You guys are right gotta just wait
I’ve been playing for 7-8 years and I look forward to the games I have
For less popular TTRPGs it is often easier to convince a few close friends to give it a go with you IRL, than scouting around online for people that just so happen to be also looking into the same game
Obviously, finding ppl irl to play has its own difficulties
my mother told me thet my aunt and uncle used to play a lot when they were my age, probably gonna messsge them later
I think they are still using the D&D 5e system, they just meant based around the ATLA lore
My dad used to play a lot when he was in college and he taught me how to play
The people I found either don’t like atla, don’t like dnd, or have little experience with being a DM
Dang
it took like a whole day or 2 before ppl responded to my post in #750812887697588356 and even then i got a campaign thru #looking-for-players cuz i was quick and snagged it
i was just at a convention today and i was like “ah why don’t i pick up a starter set, i could love it “
I did the same thing with Warhammer but I didn’t buy anything
Did it at a con and found it was a lot of fun
oh you got the 3 books and a screen?
there’s a game workshops store not far from me but i don’t think that war hammer is my cup of tea
nah
Personally the lore isn’t my thing but the game is fun
Did you get the dragon of ice spire peak game set?
i got dragons of storm wreck isle
i have icespire peak xD
i played homebrew stuff for my first things, and sandboxes
played a bit of 3.5 for my start
brainstormed a good character while i was trying to figure it all out, i think rowan scratcher is a nice name
Better than my names lol
mood
My names are just jokes or references to other media
literally right after i made him i made like a jack black inspired orc for no reason
i once had a character named Voxith Savull that was an artificer gunslinger
dope character
that’s a sick name
I love artificers, I’ve got a lot of gimmicks
it was a dragonborn in a campaign my gf ran
I’m playing one called Rohan Silvergold a kobold alchemist
nice
He uses bags of holding as his tactical nuke, he has gone toe to toe with every god, demon and Fey
im boutta be playing one called Hammond Whirlshon thats a Triton Bard in a pirate campaign
my sister got me initially interested because she gave me a run down of what she did at a dnd club she’s in and it sounded really fun
its definitely fun especially with the right group
You might be able to check that out
i had one in highschool but never joined it
Ah
mostly cuz it was only like 1 hour and thats just not enough time for me to do shenanigans
One of my favorite adventures I’ve ever played was with the most dis functional party ever
yeah, i’m heading to the same college as her so the club should still be there
It was a racist githyanki, Conartist kobold, Doom slayer and a cleric
The cleric developed narcissism because of demon madness though
lol
that sounds wild icl
I literally was playing a bard who couldn’t get lower than an 18 in persuasion and deception
can get away with absolutely anything 😨
ruining the economy dnd style
He had the lucky feat so he was just a really stupid kobold who just had things work out for him
i cant wait to pull that stuff in my pirate campaign
there will be nothing i cant blunder
Play an eloquence bard
im a college of whispers bard
Ah
i wanna start but i think i’ll be a DM considering it’s my starter pack
In any setting where magic is fully available, there's no hope for economy realistically lol
i can make people terrified of me after just talking with them alone for 1 minute
Damn
or i could make them terrified of someone else of my choosing
That’s wild ngl
I think you will do great
once per SHORT rest
It’s a lot in the beginning but it gets somewhat simple as you play
word of advice, read the book before starting it as a campaign xD
Here is a tip, if you don’t have anything planned for that day
Put a puzzle meant for a 5 year old
^
And Reflavor it to be a magical
cheers, my first character is just a pre made one but i think i’ve added enough flair to the character in notes that i think i’ve made it my own
after 1 min of talking (if they fail a Wis SV) theyre frightened of me or another creature of my choice for 1 hour
I had a puzzle I found online, it kept them 3 hours
obviously 😅
i made that mistake xD
Nice, I recommend reading up on the PHB and DMG and then having like 1-2 puzzles meant for toddlers on standby
I had a group of 4 players, all pretty smart people
They took 3 hours to solve a puzzle that was meant for 3 year olds
sure
its all about the wording
i can already tell my wallets not gonna love this 😭
lol hoard dice and source books and all the fun things
lol
I bought a set of metal dice and I’m in love with them
i dont have a single mini.... yet
are you saying to keep a puzzle behind the dm cover and describe it? that sounds really funny
im a gemstone dice man
I was part of a kickstarter that gave me a few hundred lmao
hundred? damn
Yup, make a small maze and let them sit inside
Maybe put some treasure or a monster or two
Some traps
that’s so goofy i love it
Just spice it up
it’s not like i don’t have any shortage of puzzles, my mum is doin these 1000pc ones, that’ll keep them really busy
if they set off a trap be ready for them to constantly look for traps even in a nice grandma's house
It’s hilarious
LOL thats not what we meant
I have to paint them tho
thats a trump card though
i have no clue it’s 3am here 😅
I love kobolds
for an IRL campaign
"This is the puzzle you see before yourselves in order to enter the ruins youve been tasked on retreiving an artefact from"
Slams down 1000pc puzzle of a cat
I have traumatized my players
ive traumatized my players too, multiple times
good luck!
‘ walks away laughing maniacally ‘
If you want a monster that can beat a level 10 party easily then look no further than the humble kobold
one had a flying speed, decided to dive bomb a market to land, i made em roll an athletics check (they were carrying someone else) they rolled a nat 1 and both PC's almost died
best session we had that whole campaign
look no further than themselves
I was playing dragon of Icespire peak and the dragon showed up at phandalin when they were level 3
4/6 of them died
sheesh
prolly gonna head down to my local gaming store and ask about tomorrow
Nice yeah there should be
At the very least you might be able to find AL
Adventurers league
what does that mesn ?
Give me a sec
np!
neat
And it is focused more on Raw than DM discretion
right!
It tends to have rules put in place to protect players
It’s also easier to play in because of the scheduling
There isn’t like a set group of people that play in the games
you can just hop in whenever?
personally i feel like i do enjoy campaigns with consistent players instead of westmarches and oneshots (i cant say much on it cuz i havent tried westmarches or oneshots yet, but im going off what i think i would prefer regardless)
yeah but that is more what i mean
AL isn't a campaign in the traditional sense. It tends toward oneshots, though you can do hardcovers too
i prefer consistency in players
I’m working through Candlekeep right now
alr i probably should get done sleep
Often times regulars will tend to show up more often
bye bye!
Gn lemme know if you have any questions
get good sleep console!
ofc!
As I said, you can run hardcovers in AL. But I see oneshots more. And Candlekeep Mysteries is more of an anthology book
So it lends itself to oneshot sessions well, in my experience
One of my groups went through it not that long ago
i honeslty dont see too many oneshots here, i see more oneshots in #looking-for-community than #looking-for-players
Often times AL is nice because it is a heavy into one shot sessions that fit a campaign
So new and old players can jump in without missing much
AL games don't tend to be advertised much here, in my experience. They mostly get run on their own servers, so community would be a better fit
Though there's probably some exceptions
I found my AL on Reddit lol
I want a campaign with consistency with the party
I don’t wanna hard commit just to end up stuck alone but i mean if it comes down to it I’ll do a solo campaign
Take a look in #looking-for-community sometimes they'll do one shots, but otherwise they'll do campaigns as well. Just gotta read up and find the right one
Or try to look for a long lasting campaign in #looking-for-players but never hurts to put your own submission in #750812887697588356
Alrighty
But yeah those are my recommendations as I am not running a campaign myself yet
Gonna be a very long time before i find a campaign
Roughly how long is a lvl 1-20 campaign
Could take irl years
Of playing one session a week
It took me about 3 days before I found one I could actually join
Been looking for months
All depends how fast they level you though
Keep hearing how fun it is and my friend wants to try it with me but hes in the hospital so trying to find something for myself or when hes out
Rip. It's def hard to find one that fits schedule, and you gotta be fast enough to reply to posts
My current campaign (level 5 to 20) has been going on for two years now. The PCs are level 8 and it'll be probably at leats another two years at the (slow) rate they're going before they hit level 20 and confront the BBEG.
(The campaign is slow because we use milestone and they took 13 game days (one real year) to do four personal side quest missions).
Its mostly I’ve a condition can’t speak to people but my friend doesn’t want a text campaign
Sounds like a cool ass campaign if it's taking that long
Must be fun
Text campaigns are rough, to me. But I understand. There is a community though that allows you to level up via roleplaying in text channels. Want the link?
The assassin subclass for rogue deals crits to enemies hasn’t spotted you yet?
The past two months they're on their fifth personal side quest adventure that's not releated to capaign proper.
We want like a 4 player party campaign and a normal one kinda
Consistency of the party would be nice wanna get to become friends with em
Yes, if you surprise them you do critical damage.
Well it's a westmarch server, but it still allows you to text with a character as well as others, as I saw you were mute in ur bio
Now does this end when combat starts or anyone hasn’t seen me?
You basically get a surprise round
From my understanding
So first attack only?
I wanna see if attacking hiding coming back kinda thing work with crit each sneak attack as long as i stay hidden but unsure if that’s possible
Once you attack, NPCs are typically notified of your presence, so it's hard to go unseen again without some good rolls and a nice dm
Or specific magics / spells
But as long as you go hidden at the end of each turn you get that crit if you get the roll?
Or say pass without trace would that work with it?
I'm unsure. But I don't think you'd be able to go hidden again, and I think pass without a trace stops if you attack but I'd have to reread it
I’m just trying to find a way to consistently pull off sneak crits
Big sneak damage type thing
Opponents are only surprised on the first round of combat. They must fail their (Passive) Perception check versus your Stealth check to be surprised.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Surprise
So its just one attack?
Yes.
Because rogue or goblin come with an action to hide at the end of their turn
Sneak Attack is separate and different from Assassinate (which only works against surprised targets).
You can Sneak Attack once per turn.
So you can’t surprise more then once?
No you cannot.
Again, surprise only affect creatures on the first round of combat.
Thats a missed opportunity
Once combat start noone is surprised after the first round because combat has started.
Creatures aren't that oblivious.
Again, you can still do Sneak Attacks on your subsequent rounds.
I got the starter thing and it seems very overwhelming, I can’t be the only one that finds this to be too much
What are you having trouble with?
It can be a lot to learn at first, but if you break it down then it isn't crazy bad. Do you happen to watch any dnd related content like critical roll or dimension 20?
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
hi
is there anyway someone here can teach me how to play dnd
cuz am having a struggle
What kind of stuff is confusing you? There a plenty of youtube tutorials for different stuff, and you can always read the basic rules because I think they're free

ok thnks a lot
What exactly is a 'hit dice'? I understand what hit points are, attack rolls, initiatives, etc. but have no idea what a hit dice it is
Hit dice is the amount of hit points a player has, and sometimes monsters, and it scales based on level in clases.
For example, a fighter has 1d10 hit dice per level, whereas a barbarian has 1d12.
Players can spend hit dice on short rests to regain HP. So if you’re a level 5 barbarian, you can regain up to 5d12 hp on a short rest if you choose.
The hit dice per each class are listed in the PHB in the class creation section btw so you can always check there if not sure.
To add on to that, you regain half of your hit dice back at a long rest, and I believe you also add your Constitution modifier when rolling hit dice during short rests
Tbh I don’t know if you add your con, that’s a good question. I should probably know that
Let me double check but I’m almost certain you do
Ok yeah you do add your Con modifier
Nice, thanks!
Yaho im new here. someone mind giving me a helping hand ?
What do you need help with?
I wanna learn the basics for now since im new and wanna learn about DnD

Faster than me 😦
The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
Then really it's finding a game.
I'm sure you can help out answering further questions though and can beat me there
I couldn’t remember the command to bring it up lol
Some useful commands in here for folk are:
- ** ?new** : brings up some resources for very beginners to introduce them to the game, such as the basic rules and a little introductory choose your own adventure.
- ?looking :This brings up directions to #find-a-game and explains what that channel is for.
- ?al : Explains what Adventure League is briefly
- ?homebrew : Helps explain what the term homebrew means
- ?newDM : Helps give some tips on how to be a DM- also can link them towards #dm-discussion where they can get even more DM advice
There's also a lot of helpful newplayer tags in this thread https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1151572394008395796 that you can use to quickly bring up information to explain some things such as skills, roleplaying, race, proficiency, online, levelup, hp, dice, d20, cr, class, bg3, background, ac, abilities.

Most of the battlemaster things are still useful for archery
Battlemaster will help your offence directly, while eldritch knight will give you some crowd control and defence, primarily
Maneuvers: Ambush, Bait & Switch, Commanding Presence, Evasive Footwork, Rally, and Tactical Assessment all involve no Combat checks of any kind. Of the rest, only Brace, Grappling Strike Lunging Attack, Riposte, and Sweeping Attack are explicitly melee-only. All the rest are usable with ranged attacks.
When rolling hit die on a short rest, do you add your con modifier to all the dice rolled or only once? For example as a level 3 barb and I roll 2d12 for a short rest is it 1d12+con mod + 1d12+con mod or 2d12+con mod?
For each hit die rolled.
Ah damn, I’ve been rolling my short rests wrong for a while now. Thanks!
Also makes a Bard's Song of Rest that much nicer. And you can choose to do hit dice one at a time; no need to commit to doing 2d12 up front.
How is the interaction of weapons and their damage If they go large
I find different opinions
Mostly whatever the ability you used to do large tells you happen
There's no inherent damage boost for larger weapons for player characters
But people like to argue that players should get to apply the oversized weapon rules from the DMG section on creating monsters by default
I believe there’s a damage bonus for Rune Knights when they get bigger. A d4 I think.
Enlarge gives you that
Often it say nothing. Sometimes a damageboost. So sources between DMG say differents
Sometimes nothing is the answer
There's no inherent damage boost for player characters
If the DM wants to let you use the rules for oversized weapons for monsters, they can. But it's not something you can assume or have a default right to use
It is more flavor^^
You only get whatever boost the effect that makes you large says. If it says nothing, you get nothing. If it says 1d4, you get 1d4

Can someone explain to me how Channel Divinity works? I cant seem to grasp the description in the book
It's a limited ability that you can only use a certain amount of times per rest, depending on your level. Depending on your subclass, you have extra options when you use your Channel Divinity that do vastly different things.
Is there a specific part or channel divinity that's confusing you the most?
i wanna start playing d&d but i dont know if im ready for a game yet
What's making you hesitant to join in a game?
i feel as i’m not ready enough yet? or the fact that it’s kinda daunting
I feel that. If it's nervousness about not knowing rules or feeling like you'll mess up, then on one hand you don't have to really worry too much- there are new player friendly games and people start off playing knowing next to nothing all the time- but also I know that's not always how anxiety works, and so one way is feel more in control by doing a few little things yourself.
You can practice making PCs by yourself, and even practice mock battles. Roleplay is a little harder to practice by oneself, but you can always do writing or google for questionnaires or RP prompts that help you figure out how your character might react to things. We also have the Introductory Demo which can help introduce concepts slowly and as part of a story.
As for getting used to joining a group of strangers to play, you can always just practice adjusting by hanging around here and asking questions and engaging in chat until you feel like you have a better grasp on things.
And of course at any time you can ask questions and for help on things. We have resources to help.
does PCs stand for Player Character?
It does yep!
You'll often see a few abbreviations like that, such as DM= Dungeon Master. Always feel free to ask what they mean.
thanks for the advice though! im glad that DnD is this supportive
any advice on how to practice mock battles?

If you have a character then you can have them fight a goblin, following the steps in the basic rules link above. If you don't have a character yet, you can try with a goblin vs a kobold and see how things work with initiative, movement, attacks.
(My bet is on the goblin, but who knows the kobold might get lucky). You don't need a map, but if you have one with a grid you can always try it out with that.
It doesn't have to be neat, it just can help make some of the steps of combat click into place- just reading them doesn't always help.
nice! thanks
Sure can- if you have made them on dndbeyond you can even share the link to it in #character-discussion and we can check it over and give feedback and suggestions if you like.
I’m sure folks do but as a server rule we ask that folks stay on topic for the channel you’re posting in. For things Not D&D we have #non-dnd-topics
It actually is related
I found a Fe Module for DnD
That's not really a newcomer topic
This would be the first Dnd play ever
Fire Emblem is not official D&D - folks may homebrew things but this channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started with the official rules and mechanics
Which is why I'm trying to find more experienced fe fans who know DnD and hopefully a dm
Ahh!
My b
Sorry
You'd probably have better luck asking in a Fire Emblem server hoping someone there knows D&D than asking in a D&D server hoping someone is an "experience fe fan"
yeah finding someone who is
a) a FE fan
b) willing to DM a FE DnD game
c) at the moment and for you
might be very difficult in a general purpose DnD server
though you could put your player profile up in #750812887697588356
Alright for general questions since I'm a noob what supplies and such should I get if I want to get into dnd
You can start with just the free basic rules - see the pinned messages
Technically, all you need are the basic rules, some way to roll dice, and some friends!
I'm guessing there are apps to make character sheets right
Then if you like the game enough, the players handbook is a good book to purchase.
Yes - there is a DnDBeyond mobile app that connects to the DnDBeyond tools and service.
Aight
DnDBeyond is the official digital toolset for D&D.
I’d suggest avoiding spellcaster classes until you have a bit of understanding of the core mechanics
Okay
Fighter, Rogue, Barbarian, and Monk are the most straightforward classes
if you are really into it, nothing should stop you from learning and using any class you like
Thank u guys
No class is so complicated that you can't learn it as your first class. If you want something as simple as possible, then the classes that do not use spells are the way to go. But if magic is what interests you, you can give it a shot
I looked at the Hex Blade Warlock and it's spell list seems really cool and decently simple
Tho I may be dumb
Hey what's up
sup
I'm downloading DnD beyond

the bot post above has lots of great resources to help get you started. Once you take a quick glance through the basic rules linked here, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help
Cool also how come artificer isn't in the d&d player handbook
Artificer is not part of the base game. It was added to later on. The rules for it are found in the expansion book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Well no, it's not in the Player's Handbook because it didn't exist when the Player's Handbook was printed
I see
It's not free because it's not been made part of the free basic rules/srd
Great clarification there - thanks Davyd.

Hey me too
does "+2d4" mean i role a 4 sided dice twice and add it to my halflings height?
That's correct
nice!
on dnd beyond, im making a weight for my character but the modifier only says " x 1lb" what dice do i roll?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#HeightandWeight
Halfling 2'7" +2d4 35 lb. × 1 lb.
The dice roll given in the Height Modifier column determines the character’s extra height (in inches) beyond the base height. That same number multiplied by the dice roll or quantity given in the Weight Modifier column determines the character’s extra weight (in pounds) beyond the base weight.
Assuming you're still referring to a Halfling, their base weight is 35 lbs.
thanks!
the height and weight chart reflect the averages for each race. Its not the true upper and lower limit. For example, based on this chart, the max height a human could be is 6ft 4in, which is tall but no where near the maximum height a human could actually be. So Halflings will average around 35lbs, with less deviation than other races, since you don't add anything to that. But its not the true maximum
All that being said, don't put too much thought into this. Height and weight have little to no mechanical effect, so most people just skip it completely
The tables just reflects average. Like in real life there are people on the opposite ends of the bell curve for height and weight.
Nothing stops you from having someone below or above average in terms of height and weight.
Just check with your DM before claiming your dwarf is 3 lbs 😉
For sure! I once had a player who wanted to be an "autognome" that would effectively just be a garden gnome that would carry itself with mage hand
All just normal movement, but reflavored
Excuse me, but would anyone have any tips on learning the rules of DND more effectively? Something other than the players handbook?

Hi, sorry, are we allowed to post 2 people at once in the looking for dm post?
You can yep. If both of you are active on the server, you can include both your usernames so DMs know who you are. Remember to avoid giving out personal information.
ofc, thank you!
Hello
Hello! I am totally new, but excited to learn!

I'm interested in learning about dnd lore
Thanks! I don't rlly have any questions tho. I just don't really know any of the lore, and I don't know where to start.
Probably the first thing to understand is that there’s more than one official setting, each with a lore of its own.
And on top of that, each game is a world of its own as well, so any official lore may or may not even apply.
Ok
That said, Forgotten Realms is basically the default setting for fifth edition. There’s a wiki here that covers all sorts of different topics there:
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
Like baldur's gate, neverwinter etc?
Yeah, those are both cities in the Forgotten Realms.
In a region called the Sword Coast.
ye
honestly, i knew nothing at all about dndn lore, and then i played BG3, and so much was explained therein
Sup!
Me and a friend of mine have this idea to make our characters siblings. Currently, were in the midst of forming our backstories, and I was wondering if anyone had any sort of advice, or tips?
i'd say thats probably better for a #character-discussion thing, but general ideas are to connect their backstories and give them a reason to adventure
i find a really good way is to figure out one thing, then pull the thread from there, and see where it leads.
you always wanna ask "why" when possible, and think about the things that happened that shaped who they are.
but yeah, defo check out #character-discussion
When it says something lasts for 1 minute what does that mean?
when something lasts for 1 minute, it lasts for 10 turns in combat
each turn in combat is about 6 seconds
yeah it would
Technically no, but I would be very surprised if you ever met a DM that enforced it like that. You'll be right

How does breath weapon work can it only hit 2 people like I think it says in the rules or does it just depend of DM?
The breath weapon description will say how wide and long the breath will be. For example, a line breath weapon that's 5' wide and 30' long may hit up to six creatures (if they all line up in a row) but it can only hit one if you aim the line correctly.
Hello! Sorry if I'm interrupting anything, but I'd like to ask about items when making a DND character. I'm making my first character on DND beyond and I'm wondering if the items I pick are the ones I start with in a session or if it works in another way.
Typically your starting equipment is determined by your class and background.
So if those are the items you picked, you should be safe.
Ok, Thank you for the info!
You can also always double check with your dm, if there's anything you think maybe shouldn't be there
Hi
Lol heyo
Alright, I haven't joined a session yet but I'll be sure to ask!
Hello, I’m new to DND😁
Welcome!
Thank youuu 😁
I have an odd question
So in our world the immortal gods become immortal by the amount of followers they have and how many. right now I'm the cleric of the god of war and I need to convert people so they keep him immortal because the big bad is Killin them all
so I wanna know what would be a good way to convert an army of like 10,000 people to follow him. we r about to go into a war and I thought this would be a good opportunity haha
Sounds neat! Probably a better question for #character-discussion or #dnd-discussion, though. 😅
Do the people have to be on the material plane? Yep another chat would be best lol good point
not knew to DND persay but deffinitly new to the real deal when it comes to DND
Hello
Welcome y'all!
Where can I learn dnd from
I believe the basic rules are free on dnd beyond actually!
Someone will post something here soon for ya I think
videos help
100%
and just watching gameplay on like youtube
If you've ever watched a few episodes of critical role or dimension 20 then you actually probably understand a bit more than you think
Why am I giving advice?

Those are all good links to check out to start
Is there a way for us to post that? I feel bad seeing them ask and I have no idea how to get that lol
OHHH that makes so much sense
The message is also pinned in this channel as well
Lol good point
Sorry if I'm interrupting, but I'd like to ask if there's a more specific way to join a campaign. I'm very new and I'm having a hard time actually entering a campaign due to not fitting some requirements. If there is a way, please do tell me!
The only system on this server is the #find-a-game options
But it's usually good to cast your net wide

If you prefer in person stuff you can also check out local game stores! Usually they have clubs
iamrazorwing also has a guide they made linked here: #dnd-newcomers message
And speaking of links, the basic list of bot commands can be found here #frequently-asked-questions message
Though I believe there's several more that aren't listed
I am looking for online only and I Unfortunately I leave deep in the countryside so I don't have many options, but thank you anyways!
Thanks for the info! I'll check it out when I can!
Where could I when ever I learn how to play at
Are you asking how to learn to play or how to play once you learn?
Though both can be started with the pinned posts in this channel :)
Where to go play the game
On this server, you can use the instructions in #find-a-game
For my first DnD session, I:
- Used Catapult to throw a rotten tomato at an NPC giving a speech
- Tried to light some goblins on fire, first with a torch and Control Flames, then with Create Bonfire
- Almost died fighting those goblins
Dunno what my DM was thinking sending a bunch of new players to fight seven goblins
Lol no that sounds like a chaotic opening, classic! did y'all start at lvl 1?
That's kind of a classic
People have been dying to the goblins in ||Phandelver|| for years
How to play a campaign?
wdym?
um... i mean how to play?
This may help you
Thanks😅
No problem
3, which makes sense, considering both our characters were using magic for a while
Nice! If you want to make it further in combat, save your spell slot spells like catapult for combat. HOWEVER, do whatever will make you have fun first (of course)
Plus create bonfire is a classic way to slay some goblins lol
I'm just along for the ride for the entertainment, and also there's been treasure offered
Did I mention I robbed a potion shopkeep?
Lol nice! Be careful though, actions have consequences in this game (usually)
I just cast Sleep on him, dragged him into the back, and stole some health potions
I would have stolen a Potion of Storm Giant Strength he claimed to have but I didn't roll high enough on Investigation

Hello guys, I'm very new to the game, and just got my books. I'm interested in it after playing BG3. I was checking the Monster Manual and have a question. I'm curious to understand how the monsters are built, mechanically, and I'm looking now at Mind Flayer, it says it has and action "Tentacles", Melee Weapon Attack, with a +7 to hit, from what I know for melee weapon you get your hit from str or dex, and mind flayer has str +0 and Dex +1 and +3 Proficiency, doing the math if his weapon is str or dex based it does not result in a +7 hit. It should be +3 or +4 but not +7. Dose anyone know why is this?
So an attack may use one of the creatures ability scores but also adds a proficiency bonus (this is based off the creature's Challenge Rating (CR).
So it would be ability modifier + proficiency bonus (derived from the CR) = attack bonus
And that's why the mindflayer has a +7 attack with their tentacle
Basically even that in the book is saying Melee weapon attack that in theory should use str or dex modifiers for mind flayer is using its Int modifier for the melee weapon attack, that is what you are saying?
Yes - they use their strength modifier (because melee weapon) and add their proficiency bonus (derived from their Challenge Rating) to get the +7 attack bonus.
sorry @echo kelp but your answer is confusing to me. Mind flayer has a +0 str modifier and a +3 proficiency how is that added up to 7 for its melee attacks?
You are correct - apparently mindflayers use their intelligence modifier
Weirdly they seem to use Int for their attacks.
We are not the game designers but apparently the D&D game designers decided mindflayers use their intelligence for their tentacle attacks...
thank you guys, I was thinking that I'm missing something, but now I see is a design choice.
hi

Heya!- sadly there's no VC on this server, but we have plenty of users who'll be more than happy to answer questions and explain things.
The above resources can also help you get started- You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up.
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
Then really it's finding a game.
ok im sorry for asking, but when i find one game what should i expect? real books? no voice chats? How many people? game rules?
i understand short answers.
Games can happen in person or online. If in person, you'll likely use real books.
Online often uses voice chat, but can be text only. Text only is called 'play by post' (pbp)
Typically a group is 1 DM (Dungeon Master) and 4 players.
Rules you can find in the Basic rules linked above. Most tables use these rules with some changes.
Im intrested in VC online by using pc.
Should I find my first campaign in person, or should I find one online
I found a good in person opportunity, but I don't think they want me
Me personally i haven't played online but i think it would be fun but i also like playing in person but i think for your first session go with in person
Hi all - I'm very new to DND - not roleplaying as a concept, but using DND as a system to roleplay with. I typically have run roleplays in the past in well-established worlds to pretty good success. However, one of the things I'm struggling with for DND is the "malleability" of the world, and the expectation that anything a DM does is not likely to match a canon. This means it is very difficult to research the world and create a realistic/plausible plot from it. Therefore, what I am personally thinking of doing is creating a roleplay based a bunch of years after the events of Baldur's Gate 3 (assuming a particular ending and not specifically relaying what happens in that ending unless absolutely necessary because the roleplay will also be set in a different location) - I plan to just use it as a "canon" for the purpose of source material, names of people, locations, general past events to refer to etc so that I have something to draw from and I'm not grabbing things from thin air and possibly making something very strange and non-Forgotten Realms-feeling up. Is this a reasonable approach?
DND as a whole allows alot of different roleplay scenarios due to the flexibility, meaning that its a better idea to learn about whats IN the world than about any kind of history
That's a perfectly reasonable approach! There's also plenty of objectively canon setting material available - not everyone runs homebrew campaigns.
If you've got any more questions, the folks at #dm-discussion can help more!
In terms of what's "in" the world, do you mean the races, gods, relationships between those people, and the realms and whatever map I decide to use?
pretty much
#dm-discussion would be a better channel for this, as mentioned
yeah, we can head there if you want
This goes beyond the basics
What's the name for the category of creature? Like ooze, humanoid, dragon etc
category would be the word
That would be Creature Type
creature type, yeah no that was it
You can view the full list of creature types here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#Type
uhm hello
Welcome welcome!
I’m pretty new
Well, if you have any questions, we're here to help
Sup! I am a newcommer in D&D and I just discovered the many classes it has to offer
And ngl, bard** sounds cool when your music inspires your teammates, but your attack moves are basically you being Low tier God 💀
Usually bards are the class associated with music and inspiration… but welcome to the server!
Check the pinned messages in this channel for useful links and resources to help get you started.
ive somehow managed to convince my mates to try out dnd, im anxious yet excited for my first time dming, itll be their first time playing too!
they all need to create their character sheets, but im afraid ill confuse them too much
any advice on not scaring my friends off with character sheets?
as someone who would be scared off my character sheets, maybe just try walking them through it one by one? it would be alot of work for you however
true, i do have some presets with my stormwreck isle set though
Honestly, character sheets are intimidating. There's a ton of information, and a ton of new terms/concepts for someone not familiar with D&D. 😬
- D&D Beyond can help a bit, since it will automate a lot of the process. But even then, a D&DB sheet still has a ton of info on it.
- You could try giving out premade character sheets. I like this method because I can work with a player and say "Here's where you want to focus in a fight" etc. So I can kind of break it up for them and give them a bit of a framework when thinking about the information.
- Go the first session without character sheets. For really nervous players (and for really young ones), sometimes I'll have character sheets "in my head" and focus just on them playing the game. When they want to do something, I'll ask them to roll and then tell them what number to add to it. It's a lot more freeform, but if you're familiar with the rules and classes, it can really speed things along and really "hook" them into the main gameplay and fun of D&D!
right! i think ill try the second method, thank you!
I'm a big fan of pregens as well
You can even ask them what type of character they want to play and build the pregen accordingly
sounds useful, ill try that now
The pregens for Stormwreck Isle are great because they’re tied directly into the story as well.

What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
I did the background and the info about the pg xD i've played only once and with pregen, i totally don't know what shall i sign and where
Have you picked a race and a class?
