Thanks!
hi yall does anyone know why it wont let me sign in at google in dndbeyond?
#ddb-support may help you
Is druid a good choice for support but also good magic damage?
That’s pretty much what Druids do tbh
Good to know
support with spells like healing word, pass without trace, and (depending on your definition of support) entangle and plant growth, as well as doing great damage with spells like spike growth and conjure animals
Druids are also one of the most complicated classes to play (because you kinda need to read all the spells), and whatever build you make, you'll find at least one or two of the things you can do to be underwhelming (because subclasses tend to boost one feature at the expense of another). Every class is playable for new players, but its worth knowing what you are letting yourself in for with druids.
Thank you for the help
Any recomendations what to buy? I've seen the these
Are these any good?
Dungeons & Dragons Spellbook Cards: Monster Cards, Challenge 0-5 (D&D Accessory)
Dungeons & Dragons Spellbook Cards: Magic Item Cards (D&D Accessory)
Dungeons & Dragons Spellbook Cards: Creature & NPC Cards (D&D Accessory)Dungeons & Dragons Spellbook Cards: Creature & NPC Cards (D&D Accessory)
Do you have the players handbook?
I would say it depends on what you intend to play and in what manner.
Given your list, you intend to play in person correct?
Yes, will dm for 4 players who never played any dnd before
I played a lot but... 1999 or so :/
Since I didnt get a response, I assume you have the PHB, DM Guide, and Mosnter Manual?
Is this the year, the price, or something else entirely?
Year 🙂

Honestly you don't have to invest any money to start playing dnd.
Since you're DMing for people who haven't played before, I would recommend providing them with the resources the bot post above provides.
The cards you mentioned certainly can help, but what you decide to buy should be catered to your specific needs.
Thank you
@vernal onyx IM FINALLY GOING TO HAVE MY FIRST EVER OFFICAL DND SESSION
THE DM BOUGHT DICES
I NO LONGER NEED TO WORRY ABOUT
PENCILS AS DICES
...pencils as dice?
Yk you could've just, use online dice
I healed myself then hid behind a horse corpse and did ranged attacks, it was hilarious and we won lmao
We don’t have online access that often at school
Especially after school
Yeah
I moreso meant that I dont know what that is. Can you describe it?
Draw numbers on a pencil, and then roll it,
As a replacement for a dice
Okay, so thats alright for a D6
But less so for a D4, D10, D20...
Yeah
That’s why I’m happy my DM got dices
Wait what’s D6 and stuff
…that refers to the number of sides on a die
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
Oh hey I found my chat

Hello :3
Welcome to the hobby.
The bot post above has what you need to learn the basics.
Welcome to the hobby,
Oh I've been playing for years
I was saying hi to them
This seems a very complicated
What is? What are you having trouble understanding?
The handbooker helper videos are short and easy to follow.
No it just looks like alot of rules I haven't read them lol
D&D is a game of rules.
You can take your time, it can be fairly straightforward
Read them at your pace. There's Critical Role's Handbooker Helper tutorial series on Youtube.
hey how does rolling a d20 effect your attack role
The higher the number, the more likely you are to hit.
ahh ok
Meet or beat the target's AC number to hit it.
You roll the d20, add any modifiers, then compare it to the target’s Armor Class (AC).
i thought if the attack damage was higher then your ac it would hit
If the total is equal or greater than their AC, that’s a hit and you roll for damage.
You have to hit the target first before you roll for damage.
how does rolling for damage work
Depends if you use a weapon or spell
The thing you’re attacking with will say what to roll.
tell me both
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Depends on the weapon. Depends on the spell.
ive read a bit
Read the Basic Rules. I'm not going to copy paste it here.
The various weapon damages are shown here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
Any spell that deals damage will say how much in the spell itself.
thanks
If you want to attack with a club, for example, that’s a simple melee weapon.
Melee weapons add your STR modifier to the attack and damage rolls.
If you’re proficient with clubs or simple weapons, you also add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll (not the damage roll).
So the attack roll would be 1d20 + your strength modifier + (maybe) your proficiency bonus.
And the damage roll would be 1d4 + your strength modifier.
Clever!
hey! looking to get into dnd! what literature would you recommend for beginner players?

If I’m making a new character do I just keep my lvl a 1 also adding more classes makes it a sub class right?
If your character has more than 1 class, that is a multiclass not a subclass
A subclass is part of the base class, which you pick at either level 1, 2, or 3 depending on what class you are playing. It provides some new features and abilities, or changes the abilities you already have, in order to make each character feel unique
Do I need XP or Milestone advancement type?
S stands for somatic, which means you need to like do some hand gestures and stuff, M is for material, and V is for verbal which means you say smth
DM picks.
What
When do I get a DM
When you find someone who wants to dm a game ig ?
You can find people online or you can like find friends that want to dm a game for you
do I first create a character or first find a DM?
Find a group 1st would be prefered, without a group you cant rly play
You can practise making characters, but you will need a DM and group to play with.
But wich one should I do first?
Find a group 1st, thats the hardest 1st step
ok Thx
Its not that simple, find a DM to play the game, but nothing is stopping you practising making a character.
A DM/group will appreciate if you have a basic understanding of the rules.
Id say its more logical to start looking for a group if you are new and then like ask the dm of the group to help you woth the rules if you are not sure, most dms I know were always happy to explain the rules
But you can make a character before all that yes
Not been my experience.
Rly?
Yeah okay I get that
Group of friends introducing a new player, nothing but patience and time
But I mean like irl
Random applications on the internet, not knowing the rules is a hurdle to getting a game
I assume there is also many groups just kicking out new players bc they dont want to deal w that
Exactly, So practising or understanding the rules, can only help find a game.
Yeah true true
I usually just play irl, would try online but dont think I got time for 2 dnd campaigns atm
Hello guys. Accept newbies?

hello
How do I add a cantrip? can't find it anywhere.
No
There isn't a voice channel for this server, unfortunately.
Seems like there isn't much other than links galore
If you're asking about where to add it on DND Beyond, I'd check in #ddb-support , unless someone else here knows.
This just as dead as the forums then.
Have you looked at #channel-guide because there has been conversations going on all day?

Is there something that we can help you with, specifically?
Well, if I copied and pasted the contents here, I suspect the mods would bonk me
Did you read the links to see if the answers to your questions were there?
What part of "newcomer" is throwing ppl off? I mean I'm in the newcomer thread.
Its not a thread. Its a channel
Is there a particular question you have that we can help you with?
Can't voice which is hilarious since D&D is all about story telling.
This server is not a host for games
I don't even know how to start and I got some solo thing earlier but don't know where to find it.
as @timid locust said, do you have a question?
Again NEW TO ONLINE D&D.
If you're looking for where to start, we'd recommend that you check out the basic rules - one of those links that were posted earlier
The botpost has a list of starting materials to get you started
Ok, do you know the rules and need help with playing specifically online?
Where to start is there by reading
but if any question I have doesn't fit a preconceived question then ppl are thrown for a loop
So I'm going with I'm stuck in AI conversations and not real people
I don't think you've asked a question yet
Glad I didn't actually buy anything yet.
Alright, cool it, folks.
I played table top D&D, back in the blue box and red box days. I know all about Gary Gygax and crew.
Alright, so you are looking for help playing online then. Spam do you have the shortcut to get the bot to post the Online links? I can't remember it
?tag new online
Thanks DOSH BONES
that doesn't help
Too bad you didn't have a chanel where I could show you my live stream so you can understand what I'm saying.
Playing online isn’t fundamentally different than playing in person. You just need a way to communicate with your group, plus the rules and your character sheets.
The link above includes a few popular tools to help facilitate playing online.
Greatly different, I'm not showing up at a place or they showing up at my place.
Can you explain what it is you are looking for?
“Hey, I’ve never played D&D online. What sites do you use to play?”
“Where can I find an online group to play with?”
What is the adventurers league?
?tag al
No tag al found.
in all honesty, trying to explain the entirety of how online tabletop play works would likely fill up the entire newcomers chat which would be inconvenient and disruptive for everyone else
It’s D&D’s official system for organized gameplay.
Hmmm, thought there was a tag for that
You’ll see it a lot at game stores and conventions.
It follows a more specific set of rules to ensure that characters are handled consistently.
How do I find a group to play with? I have a specific style of adventure in mind.
And because of that, you can take the same character around from game to game.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

The official organized play format, which is a structure for local groups to run regular games with a standardized set up rules.
It uses prewritten modules that are adventures you can play in a session, some of which are connected to each other to form an arc, like episodes of a tv show that make up a season
I think that one’s listed in #frequently-asked-questions, but we really need to update that whole channel.
Yeah I think that ones listed in the FAQ but even I as a mod forget all of them 😅
To make it even more succinct, AL is the official structure that volunteer local groups can participate in to run what effectively are regularly held one shots
hello im new and im looking for turkish dnd players or a group to play with, and i need someone or people to teach me the game (dnd ye yeni başladım ve tr sunucusu veya oyunu arıyorum ve oyunu öğretebilirseniz daha iyi olur)
You can check #find-a-game to see which groups are available here.
i dont see any turkısh ones
i cant seach it up too, how do find it
Yeah, I’m sadly not surprised, since this is an English-language server.
But you could try using search terms like turkish in:looking-for-players.
I don’t see any current results for that, though.
i made something like a post but now it shows like if im the dm
well i can speak english pretty well tbh
do i just join some english group
or how can they teach me the game or what i am supposed to do
If you posted in #looking-for-players, that means you’re looking for players.
If you’re looking to join as a player, you probably wanted to post in #750812887697588356 instead.
If you're looking for a Turkish group specifically, but can't find one, then unfortunately there probably aren't many here. You may just have to join an English game, or check other places where games are advertised.
If you're interested in learning the basics of the game, check out the basic rules below 👇.

Hi so artificer doesn't seem to be in the official player handbook so where would I go to look at the stuff for artificer
Artificer is in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or Eberron Rising from the Last War. You can buy it individually on Dndbeyond- I'd recommend looking as Tasha's version
Alright I'll look into that thank you
Which of the two would you suggest
Technically you'd need to buy one of the artificer subclasses to get access to the base class.
- Alchemist
- Armorer
- Artillerist
- Battle Smith
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/tashas-cauldron-of-everything
Tasha's
Tasha's would be the most current one and with the most recent subclasses. (Although I don't think the base class is much different)
Eberron doesn't include Armorer.
But otherwise, the base class is the same (since Eberron was updated to match the other changes in Tasha's).
Alright
I heard that the armoror artificer scales off of a different stat than intelligence is that true if so what stat is it
Hello I’m new to dungeons and dragons my friend introduced me to it not to long ago and I had a lot of fun so I joined this discord to farther widen my experiences with it.
Dang , thx
Welcome!
Never played dnd but i hear so much about it. I kinda know a little bit about it but basically nothing. came hear to see if i could play my first game and learn how to play.

But did you have any specific questions?
I'm kinda the same I've always wanted to try it but I never had ppl to play it with and it always confused me and the little I do know is from bg3 which I know has some key differences
same, i have gotten into this thanks to some videos it looked fun to me i even designed a character but unfortunatly i dont have anyone to play with and im a bit shy so that does not help.. :<
I feel that I just got the 5e handbook. I've had the whole collection of 4e books for years since a teacher gave it to me but I never got too into it
And then there are so many classes and to find the info about them I have to buy this book that book it gets all jumbled and expensive
i think there should be info online right?
Yea but. Idk what to trust as the right info
Check the links above!
i feel extremly dumb for not checking that
I have a question. Blank boxes like character background or stuff like that can be filled with whatever i can think of? Like i can come up with pretty detailed backstory or a shallow one at that. Any restrictions or guidelines or these things? Also what's stopping me from making backstory resulting in my caracter being op and unkillabe? Obviously this would ruin the whole fun but i wanna understand the sytem in place here.
The point of your backstory is to explain and give context to the choices you made during character creation, not the other way around. You cannot gain new item, powers, abilities, etc just by writing it into your backstory. Character Creation determines what you can or cannot have/do
Yo can i just plop my fursona as my oc?
And then just make them a wizard
And change their lore
Makes sense. Thanks, And if i am struggling with a sufficient backstory do i leave it blank?
Depends on if you can fit them into one of the predetermined playable races or not. Some DMs allow homebrew races, but it’s not a good idea to expect it
I've got a avali fursona and a bat sona
Honestly, it’s best to fill out your backstory after you join a campaign, so that you can work with your DM to make your character feel like an actual part of the world.
so when im done with the main aspects of the character i go read the rules and i am good to try and find a game?
Owlfolk, Aarakocra and Kenku are the 3 avian playable races. If you can make any of those work, it should be fine.
As for bat, you could try reflavouring dhampir
Well you should definitely read the rules before making the character, but more or less, yes
winged tiefling also exists i suppose
Oh yeah
Should I just send image of character In question
I’m walking about anthropomorphic avian species, not just any race with wings/flying speed
Yeah feel free to post it in #dnd-arts-and-crafts
I forgot the name but the race is actually called "avali"
Aaracockra or Owlin would both work with some aesthetic reflavouring
(Eagle and owl people respectively)
So I just click on find game to find a new group right?
No
You need to use the bot command detailed in #find-a-game to make a post in either #looking-for-players or #750812887697588356
What if I am looking for both? lol
If you’re a player looking for a group probably go for #750812887697588356
Okay thank you!

I have played adventure time roleplay game so i know stuff from there
Sweet! I am just trying to find a cool dm who is down to help me learn some 🙂
Nice
If I find a group would you like to join?

Same but I feel like a good dm will help us so! You got any ideas for a character?
Hahaha nice
I normally make characters for the campaign

So my character is a half elf draconic sorcerer unless like collie said the dm may only want certain characters
How do spell casting components work ?
I don’t understand them at all tbh
You need them to cast a spell.
An arcane focus/component pouch can replace them. but only if they dont have a cost or are specifically consumed by the spell.
So for example the diamond listed in chromatic orb is necessary because it’s listed as needing to be 50gp ? But like the web needed for web can be subverted by using a focus ?
You need either a component pouch or a (divine/arcae) focus for spells that have the Material component.
If the material component has a gold value and/or consumed in the spell casting you still need to get it regardless of a focus. A component pouch has all of the mundane material components you will need.
Good point, I should have specified material components are replaced by the focus or pouch.
Component pouches cover materials not consumed nor have gold values.
How do you know if it’s consumed ?
For example, the Identify requires a pearl of at least 100 gp in value but it isn't consumed
Spell will say in the description
“Need” is a strong word there, too.
Desire?
You can also use the material component itself.
Longing after?
So if you’ve got that actual web, you can cast Web.
I think I understand now
At no point is a focus or component pouch strictly required. They’re simply a common method for satisfying certain material component requirements.
cant you just have a focus??
I’ve got a focus because I’m order of scribe
Yeah, that’s what we’re talking about.
well then you don't need the components right
Unless it gets consumed or costs gold, I think that’s the rule, dose cost gold mean like it requires gold coins or that a component is listed with a specific value ?
The spell description will say the gold value of the item.
Revivify requires a diamond at least 300 gp value
so casting cromatic orb costs 50 gp always
Correct, if the material component of your spell does not have a cost and is not consumed in the casting, you can use a spell focus instead of the actual component.
Continual Flame, for example:
ruby dust worth 50 gp, which the spell consumes
It has a listed cost, and it consumes the component.
The diamond used by Chromatic Orb isn't consumed, so you can re-use the same one each time you cast it. Same with the pearl used for the Identify spell.
So you need a fresh set of ruby dust every time you cast.
However, it's not consumed.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/chromatic-orb
- (a diamond worth at least 50 gp)
Oh that’s great news~
i thought id been cheating this whole time lmao
Yeah, a Level 1 spell that would have cost 50gp to cast every single time would be crazy unfair 🙂
It’s my first time playing a caster
Some Dungeon Masters are more lenient about spell components than others, some will go so far as letting you just deduct the gold from your inventory when you cast a spell that consumes its component, some will require you to have stocked up on the component ahead of time. Check ahead so you know how much of a stickler your DM will be. If they're going to stick to the rules, they should be kind enough to make stores available that carry such components whenever you're in a town big enough that it's reasonable for them to have such a place. But if you're going to be spending an extended time away from civilization, keep in mind that you'll likely be unable to restock your consumable spell components.
Thanks~

Yeah i know
I have a question what do levels do in Dungeons and Dragons do?
Determine your hit points and hit dice, what abilities from your class(es) you have, your proficiency bonus, increases the power of certain abilities that depend on your level, your number of spell slots, etc.
Basically levels make you stronger and grant you more abilities
Ok thank you
Well, that’s what character levels do.
There’s also spell levels. The higher the level, the stronger the spell.
Where do character levels come from?
dm decides when or xp i think
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
Hii!! im pretty new to DnD and im loking for some people to take me in and teach me :)

Welcome!
I’m not sure how dnd works and I want to play some games haha
Thanks
First, think about what kinda character you'd like to roleplay with.
This may take some time -- unless you simply wanna go in and just murder NPCs -- in which case just go with a tiefling.
Well I have an oc that is a tieflibf I’d like to play as

The thing about DnD is you get to play it the way you want. Sure, there are rules and it's all by levels (evaluation).
You choose what you wanna play and then go from there.
(As long as you have a decent DM)
DM = Dungeon Master
In this case your experience is a detriment
There is nothing about being a tiefling that necessitates “killing NPCs”, and the current ruleset actively promotes more flexible race/class pairings, and the alignment system is divorced from any mechanics
Older systems were more rigid
yawns I'm not trying to be argumentative.
That’s what playing it the way you want means.
If you want to be a tiefling, you don’t have to be a murderer.
And i am correcting misinformation from going to a new player
Exactly
No race needs to be stereotyped
And if you do want to be a murderer, you can do that with any race.
Actually, if you research sterotypes you realize they literally HELP us understand things better half the time.
Like, Drizzt Do'Urden.
Yeah, no. We’re not gonna start a discussion about the “pros” of stereotyping.
You are getting way off the point
there is no reason to tell a new player to be a tiefling to kill NPCs on any level
Roger. Going silent. Veteran here, I know when to shizup up.
never knew there was a introductery demo I was just getting general knowledge from videos till now
Ooooo
Hey guys can I make exceptions for when my paladin with the oath of devotion with the tenet of "never lie or cheat" could lie? I didn't think about it when making the character and now I really don't want her +4 deception to go to waste :,)
You'd need to discuss that with your DM
hi chat
Awww what a cliff hanger I was hoping the introduction demo would go longer!

I believe the story is basically an intro to Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
its got me in a firery mood for some adventure
What are good classes for beginners ? 😊
Any martial (fighter, monk, barbarian, or rogue) will be much easier than the casters (wizard, Druid, sorcerer, warlock, bard, cleric)
The half-casters (ranger, Paladin) fall somewhere in between, tho definitely closer to the martials
However, any class is doable for a new player
I see. Thank you! I think I'll do a rogue then 😊😊
If I make a character sheet would it be easier to use the DND beyond app or the paper one?
Personal choice really but DnDBeyond does help out a lot IMO
Dnd beyond simplifies it and automates a lot but a paper or pdf sheet is a good learning experience
I took a looksie at DND beyond but the dice and bonuses and stuff is what confused me 💔
Do you all use the official character sheets or use other resources?
I use a mix of official, third-party, and homebrew content. But if you're just starting out, the free basic rules is enough to get you started.
As far as character sheets - I use DnDBeyond. Makes it easy for me as a DM to track things.
Thank you! Sometimes people hate official stuff for games and i didnt know if the general opinion was the sheets were bad
hello
for me i chose monk as a new player, i think limiting myself to certain weapons to get more creative seems like the best choice starting out
im waiting for my tomb tapper to dry
I liked that idea but I envision myself as the character and I would never be a monk 💔
Part of the fun of playing D&D and RPG games in general - get to be things we'd never actually be in real life.
The general recommended beginner classes are Fighter, Barbarian, and Rogue due to simplicity
Spell casters have many more abilities to be memorized
you don't necessarily need to know all the bonuses and stuff like that starting out. at least in my opinion. just focus on what your character wants to do and how they wanna do it is the foundation of the game
But with effort any class can work well
Okayyyy. Let me finish it then and I'll be back
Arguably that’s what D&D Beyond does best — making sure everything has the right bonuses.
near the end of the year, yes
i agree
Why is that a bad thing? 👀
wait for real??
It’s a revised version of the current one, coming in September.
man i was just thinking about getting tashas cauldron and xanathars guide too. maybe that book is a combo of both?
It is not.
but then again i wouldnt know
I just bought this one
You’ll still be able to play with the one you’ve got.
i'd probably get it cause i like looking at the art 👁️👄👁️
ha
It’s still fifth edition. Either of the Player’s Handbooks will work with any of the other fifth edition books.
i'm actually excited for Vecna: Eve of Ruin in May
And in their defense, it’s been a whole decade since the last one. 😅
yeah understandable
they keep making new content to expand worlds and give people more options but you don't need any of it to play outside the basic rules.
And 10 years between PHBs is a long time lol
They’re just taking the lessons they’ve learned over those last ten years and streamlining things a little.
Oh DND beyond did make it really easy. I just finished everything but the backstory and aliases and stuff (because I'm lacking inspiration) but wow
I still consider myself a newbie because even though i've seen my friends play D&D for a couple of years, i was kinda iffy to play in a session myself. I'm JUST starting to actually run a game with one of my friends who is also a newbie but compared to her I know more of the races and classes and rules.
For my character as a variant human monk version of myself, i took inspiration from the wu tang clan album "36 chambers" where i was being trained under 10 different senseis from "the slums of shaolin" to not only try all 36 chambers, but to master all of them to achieve peak human perfection lol
Interesting. That reminds me I have to learn the lore of the game
you can learn a small portion and still have a pretty good time
you can also go to #dnd-lore for more info
Noted.
I didn't know which stats were important besides the bare minimum..
So I have.. a tiefling rogue. 9 str 16 Dex 10 con 15 int 5 wisdom 17 charisma
You rolled for stats, I take it?
Seems fine, not great tho
looks to be that way
16 Dex is good, you probably want 12 or 14 con tho
I’d swap one of your higher numbers — INT or CHA — to CON.
you dont have to do this but i would have switched dex to be the highest since you're a rogue
you can do it that way
Nah that’s fine
Many DMs and groups prefer to see the dice rolls live
As long as it’s +3 it’s fine imo
But for practice, you're fine
yeah that's true
Generally your DM will let you know which method to use for your ability scores.
If they do want a roll, they’ll probably want to see that roll for themself.
Guys help !!
My DM is asking for boss ideas/Allies ideas
And i don’t know anything about the session/plot he’s going to hold
Ohh ok. I'll remember that for future reference
I just wanted to be a fruity lil tiefling
Talk to the dm about it
Also for reference, rogues want: max dex, preferably starting at least at 16 or 17. Preferably 14 con and 10-12 Wis. and then whatever you want from there
Is there some sort of link for bosses and npc’s?
Wdym?
I don’t wanna know much about the session, since it’s my first official one ofc
But I wanna at least give him a list of the options he has
I see
I kinda chose based on the racial stuff jtkekska
But that makes more sense
i originally wanted to play as a tiefling warlock but since i was a beginner people told me to be a non spellcaster for my first time
Can you make your own dnd boss?
yes
Do what you want honestly
I’m a tiefling cleric as my first ever official character
i mean from what i've done with a variant monk version of myself as a character i'm way more into that lol
Alright !!
as far as dnd bosses go i would say you can make your own. idk if you have the monster manual or the monsters of the multiverse book but i would use those for inspiration on a boss
if i were to do a boss character i would like him to be a spell casting king. i already have a setup for a campaign where a ruthless king took the throne after a really kind king passed away and the players have to not get caught by this king in his region. he's on the younger side but he is almighty powerful
A new DM would benefit from using an existing enemy such as from the monster manual and flavoring them as needed for the setting
How do perception checks and the other checks work
Agreed, there is already a lot of official content to take advantage of.
Given this question is being asked in this particular channel, I'm working under the context that the DM is also new to the game.
In which case, creating anything mechanically should be saved after one has an in depth understanding of the mechanics.
No tag check found in category new.
I have my first ever DND session this week, I need to learn and revise the rules and stuff NOW
If the DM decides that a characters actions warrant it, they can ask the player to make a perception check. The DM can decide if the result reveals additional information that the character reveals with their perception check or if they find <thing>. Or not. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityChecks for more info.
I wanna play but no people :(
A character that wants to look around to see if they notice something will tell the DM, and if the DM feels appropriate, will ask for a perception check
Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
Beat me to it. 🤣
Player rolls an ability check using perception
The DM calls for an ability check when a character or monster attempts an action (other than an attack) that has a chance of failure. When the outcome is uncertain, the dice determine the results.
For every ability check, the DM decides which of the six abilities is relevant to the task at hand and the difficulty of the task, represented by a Difficulty Class. The more difficult a task, the higher its DC. The Typical Difficulty Classes table shows the most common DCs.
Passive perception is when players are not actively looking and the DM needs to see if they notice something, like a hidden enemy
Yeah but still no people
OKAY THANK YOU
You can use the channels to find folks to play with!
I have a journal for DND stuff, and I’m writing stuff like this down for notes
Which channels specifically?
Also just in case we don’t have access to computers in school
If you're a player, you can post an ad yourself in #750812887697588356. DMs post in #looking-for-players so you can reply to their ads in the hopes of joining a game.
Yeah but what about the rest of players
That's good taking notes during the session is a good way to retain important information and show to your DM that you're giving them your undivided attention.
That'll be whoever else the DM admits to their game.
i have a small adventure to play for you
Wot
i messaged you
I am curious and want to know what class is the best in you guys opinions
That's less a newcomer question and more #dnd-discussion.
Ok
Dont worry about whats best as a new player, pick what’s interesting
I just had a funny d&d idea
If anyone is singing anything, I'm going to ask to roll to see if their singing Story of undertale, I have no clue if this is legal and frankly I don't care
I mean if someone’s singing, what they’re singing is kinda known or set
You can’t change it just by rolling
You could try to persuade them to sing something else tho
If I played as a bard then if I don’t like very much my second option might be rogue or ranger
I will persuade them to sing any goofy song everytime somepne is singing
Depending on the seriousness of the campaign, your dm may not like that
Dont needa tell me twice I havnt made goofy parodys for nothing!
You made d&d covers of songs?..... If so, I NEED THEM NOW
oh no no I just change up the lyrics of medieval style songs so they are all goofy and unhinged
D&D song covers need to officially be called bardcore
Oh, I still need to see that
alright bet got any recommendations might be a little hard if its a song we both dont know
Wait so you make medival songs goofy
yeah
I don't know medival songs
hmm well what about a bards song might take some time but I can do just abt any song
I have no idea what a bards song is
a song of adventure and feats told to thee through a song!
I need some help, at my school there is a D&D club and I’m currently a DM (more from circumstance than actual desire to be a DM) I’m doing a homebrew story, which I know is a bad idea for a new DM but I’m not sure what to do because I don’t really have a BBEG because I haven’t really planned to be a DM and I’m not sure on how to choose a proper BBEG because I don’t want to be someone who railroads (sorry for any grammar mistakes. English is not my first language.)
is it just gonna be a short or long running campaign?
Something kind of short we only meet once a week and I don’t want to do something too long because I’m not good at being a DM
Ah alright well if it were me id come up with a personality, weaknesses and strengths for what kind of BBEG id find challenging but not overly unfair for a short term campaign since its homebrew then next id go through what sort of abilities id want it to have and a common race with said abilities or a race that would compliment them afterworlds is where id start with the description afterwords Depending on what the results are id make evil companions to help make up for shortcomings for the party to get through first
Is there some reason premade adventures are not on the table
Well, there is I was too stubborn to use any of the premade books or adventures
So…
You could always transition into one if you’ve changed your mind.
And I’m already a couple sessions in on my current campaign I’ve got a few ideas it’s just currently I need a BBEG
Or just wait and reveal the BBEG later.
Thats very true and if you need help to brainstorm for a BBEG ill spitball based on the previous sessions
But #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building might be able to help you come ip with something.
also seems more #dm-discussion
And involves discussion of the parry to balance it
Another question if I wanted to join a group based from the server are there currently any groups going on right now?
Yep! #find-a-game can point you toward them.
how do you calculate your spellcasting ability?
when i google it says "spell save DC" is it the same?
Your spellcasting ability is listed in your class’s Spellcasting feature.
Spell save DC is given to you in the spellcasting feature of your class/subclass
It’s either INT, WIS, or CHA, depending on the class.
The formula is always 8 + proficiency + spellcasting mod, defined by your class
What class are you using?
Wizard. 22 intellegence, +6 modifier +10 save. I already calculated my spell attack and my spell save DC
Intelligence is your spellcasting ability, then.
Which is why your Intelligence modifier is included in your spell attack modifier and spell save DC.
Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your wizard spells, since you learn your spells through dedicated study and memorization.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#SpellcastingAbility8
How did you get 22 intelligence, though? Normally ability scores are capped at 20.
And if it is 22, your spell attack modifier and spell save DC seem off.
What level are you? What’s your proficiency bonus?
I dont know... i had my DM help me to make sure i was doing it correctly. I am lvl 10 and i just kept adding to my intellegence through the ability score increases. proficiency is +4. I cant post a screen shot in here.
Why are you playing a level 10 PC if you're new to D&D, especially a wizard?
When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.
At a 22, though, your INT modifier would be +6.
Your spell attack modifier is your spellcasting modifier plus your proficiency bonus.
it is at +6
So 6 + 4 = +10.
- 2 magical items that give me +2 each item.
You can't have an Int (or any other ability score) above 20 short of special magic items.
Oh, I misread here. 😅
I thought you were saying your spell attack modifier was +6.
But in hindsight, I’m guessing that’s your INT mod and your INT saving throws?
Oh yeah! i took the resilient feat so thats a +1 i chose wisdom
Not your spell attack mod and spell save DC.
Anyway, yeah, INT is your spellcasting ability. 😅
i apprecite it! I was reading the telekinesis spell and it says "spellcasting ability VS creatures strength check" and i wasnt sure what to calculate.
Yeah, it says that because while a wizard would use INT, a sorcerer would use CHA.
Sometimes i feel like i need a "dnd for dummies" book 😓 i appreciate your help.
That said, why are you making a 10th level character out of the gate? It's got a lot of stuff at once to get used to, instead of step-by-step
Perhaps start at lower level? Level 10 wizard is going to be overywhelming with all the spell options.
such as telekinesis being a more complex spell than, say, catapult
There is a reason why most new players to D&D start at level 1 so they get to understand the framework of the game before they get more powers that may overwhelm them.
@cobalt frigate the DM has started us at lvl 10 on a homebrew 🤷 i have done 5 of the 1 shots until i found a group i liked.
level 10 and (an indeterminate amount of) homebrew is a recipe for confusion for newcomers
i really need an actual dm
i tried making my chat gpt a dm and the ammount of instruction i have given it probably qualifies me as a game dev at this point
well i cam here cause i wanted to ask how does modifiers work or should i do that in rules
cause i have rolled the modifiers but like.. what do they do? do i get like my roll +ability modifier or what
modifiers get added to the dice roll. for example, if you have a strength mod +2, then any STR-based skill check, regular STR checks, and STR saving throws gets that +2. in the case of STR, it also gets added to melee weapon attacks and melee weapon damage as well (roughly speaking, there are some exception and different rules). another common one is PB (proficiency bonus), which kinda symbolizes your character being good at stuff they do. this increases every few levels, and gets added to any check that you're proficient in (be that saving throw, skill, or attack)
Have you read the basic rules, which explain the uses for stat modifiers?
ik that
i think i worded my self incorrectly
i am talking about ability scores ig
but thanks a lot
it cleared up some misconceptions

They are linked above , free, i suggest starting there
i read that but let me actually check again. i was confused when i reas it
It is helpful to re-read things
that is why came here but alr let me check it again and i will come back if i still have something. Thanks 👍
What are you trying to do, an attack, a spell attack, a skill check?
oh got it my ability score defines my modifier
actuaally i tried playing with chatgpt but like it is hard to make it work when you yourself are new to this. i told it to follow dnd5e rules so it added the modifier automaticaly to all of the above when i did the,
i eventually grew frustrated due to various reasons. so i came here reviewed the rules and now i know
ChapGpt is not a way to play dnd
Look for in person games at local game stores, comic stores libraries or schools, use warhorn, meetup, facebook, craigslist
online games, #find-a-game
we don't have that here in my country. dnd isn't common here ya see. and yes i am indeed here to find a group but first i thought i should cover everything up before going there
Online play is common these days.
i personally want to find a group that i can stay with for a long time but.. that is for another channel i suppose
I've been playing with an online group for the past two years and the campaign will last at least another two years.
My group is online and we've been playing together for seven and a half years almost
Big NOICE
So don't treat online play as being purely casual/informal/non-permanent
ya i wanted exactly that since i have found many people who are on the same wavelength with me
Yo also which books should i read for learning spells and all that
i already have the player's handbook and dungeon master's guide
but idk how much should i research since other books might have more spells and content i like
well, first read through the PHB. then, if you want more, Tasha's and Xanathar's have a bunch of extra features. other than that, there's a lot of books that have bits and pieces (like Mordenkainen's has monstrous playable races, Strixhaven has extra spells and stuff). but mostly, you should be fine with the "big three", and even just the player's handbook, for most tables
what are the big three? tasha, xanther and phb?
I assume so
alr thanks
What online virtual tabeltop do use for D&D or other role playing games?
There are lots of choices, some popular ones being
- roll20
- Foundry
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Tabletop Simulator
- D&D Beyond Maps
- Talespire
- Fantasy Grounds
for D&D, I usually go with AboveVTT, because it has nice integration with DnDBeyond, and that's where all my stuff is. for other, I usually go with Foundry
If you want specific recommendations, I would suggest #third-party
Hi all. Hope all is well! Is there anyone in the UK running a campaign I can potentially join? Not played in a couple years and have wanted to play again
You'll be wanting to check the #find-a-game section.
Cheers mate

hello hello i just started playing DND with a group of friends at school last semester and its been pretty fun
how many spell slots does an Oathbreaker Paladin have at level 12?
The Paladin Class description has a table, please refer to that, as for all questions about class spell slots
thank you :)
You can find that table here, btw:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/paladin#ThePaladinTable
how the heck do you deal with elemental monsters? I'm looking at their info and they all have big lists of immunities and resistances. how in the world does anyone deal with them?
I'm trying to make a ranger that focusses on elementals but now I'm seriously second guessing myself here.
Have a broad variety of damage types at your disposal.
Something made of fire is reasonably going to be difficult to harm with fire.
So try some cold.
Most elementals, especially ones with lots of damage immunities, will be higher CR monsters, which means you'll be fighting them at higher level. By that point, you and your party should have a very large tool box of options for facing any type of foe
right now i'm looking at monster slayer and horizon walker ranger archtypes. think that'd help?
Horizon Walker's Planar Warrior is an effective way to cut past resistances. Force damage is rarely resisted.
But Monster Slayer's Hunters Sense is a good team option, since you can share that information with the whole group.
#character-discussion can probably help you narrow things down, though.
Easiest way is think of it like a blast from an explosion
Ehhh... not necessarily.
It's just a type of damage. In Dungeons and Dragons, every damage has a type, but the actual type of damage doesn't intrinsically have any benefits. That being said, monsters almost never have resistance to Force damage
In fact, a bomb does fire damage, dynamite does bludgeoning, and frag grenades do piercing.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#Explosives
thank you XD
Different attacks, damaging spells, and other harmful effects deal different types of damage. Damage types have no rules of their own, but other rules, such as damage resistance, rely on the types.
Force is pure magical energy focused into a damaging form. Most effects that deal force damage are spells, including magic missile and spiritual weapon.
I think I'll go with Horizon Walker. Monster Slayer is more the characters thing but Horizon Walker has more effect against elemental foes and opens up some interesting storytelling
Go for it!
I'll mix that up with the druidic fighting focus.
As a player, you should not be looking at monster stats as that is “meta” knowledge your character would not normally have. It is up to the DM to advise the party in game if that will be an issue
A player should not narrow themself to one or two forms of damage, simple magical piercing/bludgeoning/slashing is useful to have
ah well, i'll keep that in mind for the future
if it helps any i was only looking up this one because the entire reason the character became a ranger was to deal with elementals that were messing with his community. and as a dwarf he has a higher chance of knowing about them since fire elementals are used to heat the forges
Yeah, if I know my players are looking up monster statblocks I yell at them for meta "cheating" and if they keep it up I give them a warning.
Easiest class to pilot?
You mean "play."
Fighter, objectively.
Human champion fighter is the simplest character in the game.
Because it needs the fewest words to explain.
You hit, and you hit good.
You hit better
I meant in terms of actual rules text, but sure, that, too. 😂
What's dnd one?
So basically the new edition of dnd, right?
that's how I'm reading it
One D&D is the code name for the next generation of Dungeons & Dragons, bringing together three initiatives that will shape the future of the game:
How does magic wands and the wizard spellbook work ? Do I need to hold them in my hand while casting spells ? Can I hold both ?
I hope it's this year.
you dont have to hold your spellbook when casting unless its a wizard ritual
You need either a component pouch or a focus for spells that require Material components.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#MaterialM
Casting some spells requires particular objects, specified in parentheses in the component entry. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell.
If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell. A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell's material components -- or to hold a spellcasting focus -- but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components.
Not really. It's more of a rules refresh than a brand new edition.
The new books are still fifth edition.
Studio Blog: 2024 Core Rulebooks, Player's Handbook Playtest 5
Clarifying Language: One D&D, 2024 Core Rulebooks
As we continue playtesting and discussing materials for the upcoming Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual, and even release updates on the D&D Virtual Tabletop and evolving D&D Beyond toolset, it’s importa...
"One D&D" isn't even a term they're using anymore.
Ok so the spellcasting focus thing can be the magic wand with bonus to spell save DC right ?
any magic item that is a magic wand is also an arcane focus, yes
Nice
even stuff like the wand of magic missiles
"One D&D" was a playtest codename, much like "DnDNext" was used for the 5E playtest back in 2012-2013.
But I can't hold two of them to get additional bonus right ?
that depends on the exact wording of the items
You definitely won't benefit from two of the same item.
but generally, effects of the same name dont stack
oh ok so two war mages wand don't add up
Correct
But I could get a different wand in my other hand right ?
But a wand of the war mage could pair with some other type of wand, depending on how they're both phrased.
mm ok
Actually, War Mage grants the bonus merely by holding it:
While holding this wand, you gain a bonus to spell attack rolls determined by the wand’s rarity.
So it should be able to pair with any other wand and still confer its bonus.
Okok
And idk if there are any I'll check it out but if it possible to have the wand in one hand and a staff or a rod in the other one ?
Since the wand is a little thing
You can hold both but their bonuses (generally) won't stack.
sure, just remember that spells without Material components are now an issue for you
why ?
Well, with somatic but not material.
A verbal-only spell would still work.
right
If I take war caster as a feat this isn't a problem anymore right ?
Because as people replied earlier bonuses of the same effect/type don't stack.
nice
Pedantically, War Caster does specify "weapons or a shield".
but if it's like a war mage wand that gives a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls and idk maybe a rod with a special effect it could tehcnically stack depending on the effect right ?
Some DMs might reasonably rule that a spellcasting focus is neither.
But I suspect most would let it pass.
A rod or a staff can't be considered a weapon ?
Mine is pretty chill
Any magic staff can be used as a quarterstaff.
I know next to nothing about dnd
yeah

Whether that rule technically qualifies it as a weapon itself is a question for #dnd-rules.
hmm, I guess a staff would also be a weapon?
Maybe ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Again, that's a #dnd-rules discussion.
My only point here was that you should discuss it with your DM to be safe.
ok thx
I don't want to say "Yes, War Caster works" if there's a chance your DM might reasonably disagree.
Even if I don't expect them to disagree.
Edition 5.5?
???
well right now we got the 2014 Players handbook. This year, there will be also a 2024 players handbook
etc
For example the 2024 Player's Handbook. Does that clarify for you cobraregala?
Still fifth edition

We recognize that the term “One D&D” has caused confusion around the updated rulebooks. The 2024 core rulebooks aren't ushering in a new edition of the game; the books you enjoy today will be compatible with the updated core rulebooks, because it's all the same edition of D&D. If you're a casual reader, though, this may not have been clear with how we've used the One D&D term in the past. That said, we'll be updating the language we use here on D&D Beyond and elsewhere so as to eliminate confusion around our continuing support for fifth edition.

I'm playing an artificer right now, and i think I'm still underestimating it, could someone tell me how much they are able to do?
I mean... the artificer rules say exactly what they can do.
Did you have a specific question about one of their features?
That's probably a better question for #character-discussion if you want to discuss and theory craft about the capabilities and strengths and weaknesses of a specific class or character
well for example, my dm did let me make sending stones today
If you chose that as a Replicate Magic Item infusion, yes, that's something your artificer can do.
no not replicate magic item infusion
i just made them
well, my char knows how they work
but still
Sounds like your DM is probably using their own crafting rules, then. You'd have to ask them what the limits of that are.
How can I track speed and distance without a playmat? Is speed really that important in the game as long as my players aren't moving insane distances in one turn?
can anyone recommend any online tools for dnd sessions that arent in person? does anyone use tools like having a map or character sheet right there?
Are you using physical battlemaps or theatre of the mind?
#dnd-maps, #third-party, and/or #dm-discussion would be a better place to ask
I'm not really aware of what that means because I'm new, but I'm going to assume theatre of the mind.
Roll20 (free) or Foundry VTT (one-time fee) are very good for virtual maps.
D&DBeyond for character sheets, Roll20 also has some character sheet integration
Foundry has no subscription but an one-time license.
Ah gotcha, I’ll update ty
Alternatively, there's some good advice here if you're playing without a map:

Hey so anyone got a link or something to the rules and how to build a character sheet and like what to do lol
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Preciate it!
so if I DID want to make a map instead of theatre of the mind (I'm not a very imaginative person haha!) what should I print it on? I realyy just have standard letter paper at my house
Oh quick question is how long can a typical story last?
i was told longer than monopoly XD
That's probably true.
Theatre of the mind basically means you play without battlemaps, with the DM describing how far away enemies, locations, and objects are. It’s up to the table’s collective imagination to “imagine” the setting. So for example a DM would say things like “the enemy soldier is 30 ft away from you to the SW, and the portcullis lever is 45 feet to the S.” Adjudicating speeds & distance is a little faster since a player will just go “I walk x ft in y direction” but it can be a little harder to keep track of mentally, especially with more combatants.
Physical battlemaps are what you might see if you’ve seen anyone play more traditionally or have seen someone play using Roll20, Foundry VTT, or any other virtual tabletop. The use of playmats is within this category. Herein a map is overlayed with a grid where each square represents a 5’ x 5’ area. Adjudicating speed & distance is a little harder d/t needing to count squares but it makes it a lot easier to keep track of everything.
Most players shouldn’t get insane speeds anyway, unless they’re specifically going for a speed build or playing a monk. If you’re using the former method I would just get a sheet of paper and mark dots for each combatant and note the rough distance between each one in the event of crazy speeds. For battlemaps, it’s fairly easy to just make each square a 10’ x 10’ area instead, or if using online play, just finding a larger battlemap.
In the event of travel time over large distances (i.e. across town, city to city), there’s separate rules for that so you don’t have to worry as much about insane speeds
A typical session of D&D will last about 2 to 4 hours. How many sessions it takes to actually finish the story is entirely dependent on the DM running it. A "one shot" is a game that finishes its story in one session. A "campaign" is a story arc covered across multiple sessions, and a campaign can last anywhere from a few weeks to multiple years
You can try graph paper which can be gotten for relatively cheap, since that already comes with a grid. Best part is if you don’t want to print out a premade map on it, you can always draw on the paper
Makes sense. I guess I'll start making a battlemap somewhere!
A campaign would last a lil longer than monopoly i suppose
a little bit
Depends how slowly you're playing it
TV analogy for D&D
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
So definitely longer than monopoly by about 🤏 much
My current campaign has been going on for two years (entering its third year) and it'll be at least another two years by the time they finish and confront the BBEG.
There are campaigns that have been going on for decades.
hi guys , how can I join a new campain? I am new
Sup I'm new to dnd can I join campaign
I'm playing an Oathbreaker Paladin, what should I do with the Holy symbol I was meant to get?
it's one of my first characters
what is that
Check #find-a-game
thank you
Means bruh
it's not helpful though :(
Take a broken symbol to remind you of what you once had.
To put it simply, your Holy Symbol helps you cast some of your spells and powers some of the abilities you get later on. It's not a one time use item or anything, so just keep it on your person.
but since I'm not of good alignment, it's not attuned to me
The Holy Symbol doesn't require attunement, and can be used by any character regardless of alignment
Hello
Holy symbol isn't a magic item. It's a divine focus.
Yes, rivers and streams.
If you're asking about waterworks in cities then this is something you have to ask your DM regarding their campaign setting.
I suppose it's pretty hard to find a game, huh?
There are waaaaaay more players than DMs.
It may take you minutes to months to find a good table to play at so keep looking.
I am not trying for months just to maybe get a match.
It's whatever at this point.
Finding a good table is like dating because it's a social relationship.
In that case, that's even more motivation to not look for one.
D&D isn't a video game where you can just hop into a lobby. You have to match with the DM and the other players to see if you fit with them.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I am aware.
You have to proactive.
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
All I can really do is look. Everyone is always taken.
It's whatever. I'll just stick to BG3
If you want to play in person check out your local hobby stores, school clubs, Facebook/Meetup groups, etc.
Have you looked on Dnd Beyond? That was where i found my first game. Seemed to be a little easier then on here.
I'll give it a shot, I suppose. But I doubt I'll find anything
All you can do is try! They usually will put New Players welcome or something similar in the discription.
Games arent listed on dnd beyond
Sure are.
That's what I thought. I Was confused since I never saw anything
Its a tool for tracking a character sheet and storing books online
He may be referring to the forums.
Then specify?
I don't think i can put links here
I am already there anyways
In the forum? Or in beyond?
Sorry it wasn't letting me type message after message! Didn't mean to sound rude there.
I have a question what die do you use to make a character I’m new to DnD

Rolling dice is one possible method for determining ability scores.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
But mostly character creation is just looking through the available options and making some choices.
You can start by picking a race, class, and background.
D6 to roll stats and if you wan't random traits and stuff it typically will tell you in the table. But like everyone else said it's not a lot of dice rolling when you are selecting Race, Class, Background, and that kinda stuff.
Unless your DM has asked you to roll for your ability scores, I'd recommend using the standard array or point buy instead.
Typically the DMs who do ask for rolls want to see those rolls for themselves.
Need some help in the future of when sales go on for digital source books
Was worth a shot
Sales are typically announced on their social media, emails and on the site's banners so worth keeping an eye on things
D&D Beyond has seasonal sales, with Christmas and Cyber Monday being the biggest.
So I'm going to wait for a while, thanks you for helping me
Keep an eye on #dnd-announcements.

i need help making a character
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
i havent even started
Gotcha
First thing then would be to pick a race, class, and background. Did you have anything specific in mind?
race: dragonborne class:wizard

This is the important part

You've got Dragonborn, Wizard, now do that ^
ok
FWIW, the quick start guide for wizards says this:
You can make a wizard quickly by following these suggestions. First, Intelligence should be your highest ability score, followed by Constitution or Dexterity. If you plan to join the School of Enchantment, make Charisma your next-best score. Second, choose the sage background. Third, choose the mage hand, light, and ray of frost cantrips, along with the following 1st-level spells for your spellbook: burning hands, charm person, feather fall, mage armor, magic missile, and sleep.
(Of course, you can choose different spells if you want)
how do i make ability scores?
the big post just above talking about abilities
you... use one of those methods.
like with dice and stuff
Rolling dice, standard array, and point buy
Which method you should use is a question for your DM.
there's three methods
Standard Array (the set of numbers you put in any order)
Point Buy (a little more math but more variance)
Rolling (as listed)
"Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability."
nvm
If you don’t have a DM yet, stick with Standard Array or Point Buy.
ima go
The easiest option is the standard array.
I’d do 15 INT, 14 CON, 13 DEX, 12 WIS, 10 CHA, and 8 STR.
hi
hi indeed

What is Spell DC?
It is a number characters and some NPCs use to determine the DC (difficulty class/check) of their spells that force someone or something to make a saving throw
Each class with spell casting features describes the calculation in the table under the class description.
Sorry under the table
When you cast a spell that forces a saving throw, like Acid Splash, the enemy must roll their saving throw of the ability type listed in the spell description. If their roll, after any bonuses and penalties, is equal to or greater than your spell DC, they succeed. If not, they fail. The consequences for each should be listed under each spell.
So for cleric see the Class Features section under Spellcasting Ability to seee the calculation: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#SpellcastingAbility2
It's usually based on 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting ability (e.g. wisdom, intelligence, or charisma) modifier
Ahhhhh got it ty!
whats the best way to play a rogue like how should i interact with battles or nature or people ig idk
second two are up to however you roleplay your character
first one, you want to focus on triggering sneak attack and not getting hit
I was looking at the races and I was reading on the variant humans and it didn't make any since to me 💔 if someone could explain in little brain terms I'd appreciate it
What part of variant human were you confused about?
So do they just get more stats in a specific area or is there anything more to it
Have you read the race description?
They get less stat boosts overall but in exchange they get some other stuff
(Compared to regular human that is)
Hiya!~ i’ve been playing dnd as a player for a little while, but I’m planning on starting a new campaign, anyone have advice or tips or anything?
um hi im new to dnd i never played it so much as a bord game but i know a little bit about it
#dm-discussion may be able to give some advice
Maybe I'm dyslexic 💔
Sorry, it’s just you’d be suprised how many people we get asking about how something works without having actually read it first
Variant humans get 2 +1s wherever they want, as opposed to regular humans who get a +1 in every stat
In exchange, they get to start with one feat
Feats are like extra abilities
I'm jk. I skimmed it too fast </333
But thank you for being patient. I'll read more in depth next time before I ask something dumb
An example is telekinetic which lets you push someone with your mind
Ah, all g
I think I'll stick to something easy before I do anything like that 😔
helloo

Which rogue subclasses are in free rules? Just Thief?
Yep
Cheers just checking
Each class gets 1 free subclass in the Basic Rules/SRD
New player down in #character-discussion wants to play Trickster but doesn’t have PHB, I couldn’t remember which ones free
Hey! So I'm newish to DND, I know for the steps to building a character, I'm just not sure what kind of character I should play. I'm looking for something really beginner friendly, yet entertaining enough to keep me playing
Haha funnily enough I've actually tried building a druid, it's just uh- I don't know how to play it properly 😅 I made a circle of the shepherds druid, I can send you the link if you'd like but I literally just copy and pasted the build after searching up how to build it online, mainly because, I don't know how to build my own stuff decently
