could a druid wildshift into a bear and then wear a custom made artifer jetpack to move 2x the spaces
If you're focused on ranged attacks I probably wouldn't bother with TWF
Everything about that is an

then line up like 500 jetpacked bears and have them all move foward 10 tiles but they slame into each other after 2 tiles trasfurring the kinetic energy making the last bear moving really fast because 1 round is 6 seconds meaning there would be a 4,000 pound bear moving around 880 miles per hour heading towards a group of bandits and with the speed and weight it should hit for around 800 damage would this work
thats like the peasant railgun,it just doesnt work
is that because dnd is not a physics simulator
This isn't a question that's appropriate for this channel, which is to help new players out on the basics of the rules of D&D.
sorry
I feel like "the peasant railgun doesn't work, please stop asking" is a pretty good new player lesson though
As a general rule, if it came up as a DND meme or a "your DM will hate this broken thing" kind of post, it probably doesn't actually work/happen in a normal game
oh it's because I shot a demon 2x dealing 40dmg in the same location then I got grapple by a demon, fell 20ft, while being restrained by shadows, the only thing i could do is stab the demon and did 10 dmg and got downed, after healing words then played dead
Have you looked if there’s any tabletop programming at a local library or games/comics/hobby store?
I've been looking around no luck so far
Keep an eye out. You might see if there are any upcoming events in your area by searching https://locator.wizards.com/#.
Nothing nearby but I bookmarked it so I can try again throughout the week
I mean, I'd recommend having a melee weapon and you might want to look into getting some kind of teleportation. But I still wouldn't suggest taking the dual wielder feat if you're primary a ranged build
I see, one more question is sharpshooter good? Because has +10 dmg but the -5 hit though
If you've got enough ways to balance out the minus five, such as getting advantage or having a good bonus, it's good for dps
Hey
Does anyone think I could use wish to get a bone devil as a pet who is loyal to only me
Mathematically speaking, using it does increase your average damage, even when you factor in accuracy. And that’s before you consider the fact that there are a lot of ways to increase your accuracy, to counteract the downside
This isn't a question for this channel, which is meant to help new players to learn the game.
This is something better explained in #optimization
short answer is yes, when built and used properly
Ok thanks guys
Hi so i know it's past midnight, but I still have the question soo. In what situation would a nat 20 not be a critical success?
anything that isnt an attack roll
Contrary to popular belief, Nat 20s are only critical successes on Attack Rolls.
Yeah that's fair. So for example you can't haggle something to be free if you get a nat 20.
Attacks and death saves
Otherwise, for saves and ability checks, it's simply the best you could do
Ohhh ok. Thanks
Nat1 only does something special when
An attack roll, meaning it auto misses regardless of other stuff
A death save, counting as two fails
A nat20 only does something special when
An attack auto hitting and doing critical damage
A death save regaining 1 hp
yup. a nato 20 persuasion check doesnt automatically make a king give you his kingdom
Depending on the ability check, it could simply result in the best or worst possible outcomes.
The worst doesn't have to be detrimental, just a simple "no" and flavorful hijinks.
In addition, the best doesn't give you everything you want.
You gotta earn all of those goods and bads. xD
For example, you don't fail at petting the dog and end up punching it.
You can't hit the moon with an arrow.
A nat20 on a charisma check asking for the king to give you the kingdom probably means he doesn't have you casually executed, it doesn't automatically mean he gives it up.
So where do I start with DnD
Have you read the free basic rules?
I’d recommend checking YouTube for some beginner guides. They’ll likely explain it a little better than just reading rules

@burnt eagle read above
So hello everyone, I'm new to DnD and I'm supposed to be a DM for my party but I'm so confused and don't exactly know what I want the campaign to be about. Any Ideas for something simple but interesting?
A lot of diffrent ways to crack that egg. I'm two session into a campain currently. Before the first session All I had was a map that showed some towns and I knew where those towns got their resources from. I also know what enemies where around. But that was literately all the prep I had and players seemed to enjoy the last 2 sessions.
I'm trying to be a good DM cus my party is also new to dnd and they also don't speak english I mostly joined this server to try and find a campaign and start as a player but I honestly don't even know who to ask
Or you mean you want to get the player's perspective so you have a better idea of what's fun?
yes
Ah yeah that makes sense.
I got the starter set for christmas and as much as it covers the basics I think I could've figured most of that stuff from youtube. But if you don't mind me asking how's your campaign going? and how do u prep for a session? I don't mean to sound pushy but I'm genuinely curious.
Eh it's super early. Honestly things have gone better when i've preped systems than then super specfic encounters and what not. A big part of it is if you know what players MIGHT want to do so you can be prepared for what challenges they'll will face while doing that. One of my players is talking about traveling to the bigger city in my setting and my prep at the moment is mostly the things that COULD happen along the road. If a monster CAN show up then it's best I have it's stat block ready.. or just have a generic stat block. And if a monster can show-up at ounce place along the road it could show up some place else. But for me it's sorta different because we are so improv/sand-box focused. I mostly just spend time thinking about what will happen in the world. Usuually I don't know how my players will react.. so that just becomes in-session improv work.
thanks!
heya not 100% new but im only in 1 single campaign with a fully homebrew dm.
what amount of gold do all of ya'll have on average?
cause i on average have 5-15 gold
Starting gold at level tends to be between that, otherwise depends on how much the DM gives over the campaign

Hey
Welcome. Are you new to the game or just the server?
The discord or the game?
Welcome to the server! Do you have questions about getting started with D&D?
Do I need to have a character sheet? I heard its like important
Sorry if that sounds rude
If you’re joining the game as a player, yes.
You could find groups that are only loosely playing D&D without character sheets, but those are probably rare.
Each player controls one character in the story. Your character sheet tracks your character’s abilities and such.
Awe damn, well can y'all show me an example of a character sheet?
Scroll down on this page: https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
That link explains how the character sheet is organized.
There’s also a few premade character sheets here:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Ooo

Question
Can I like use other pre-made character sheet from online or do I have to use only those ones
That's up to the DM. They'd probably want to review the character sheet before giving it the green light.
In short, yeah.
Idk why I'm suddenly signing up for a dnd session in the middle of the night but y'all seems nice so imma do more research
We think it's fun, so hopefully you do too. Feel free to ask questions as they arise for you!
what is the difference between community and self-contained
In what context?
is self contained a normal adventure and community has something different added to it
Like an adventure module for example?
Where are you reading these words? That might help clarify how they're being used.
My read is that self-contained is an adventure that does not intersect with another group's. What happens at your table has no bearing on anyone else's. A community game is often occuring in a living world (think MMO) where what happens during one session for group A may have ramifications for what happens to group B in their next session.
i see
and a another question about sending a request, do i just click the looking-for-dm and press enter or do I have to type anything else
quick quebbin: Should reading the rules, and making a character (which involves reading some of the lore about the world) enough for a new player? or should I be doing a bit more?
Click it, hit enter, and you'll be taken to a form to fill out.
you need the / symbol first. The message should be "/looking-for-dm"
Howdy
ok thanks
Read the rules, go through the character creation process, and generate multiple character ideas. You should be pretty well set (outside of having a group, obviously).
You dont need to follow the lore of the official setting(s) since not every dm uses them
I have a few ideas already kinda bubbling in my head. Cheers for clearing that up
Keep your backstory looser and make it adaptable
will do :] I reckon knowing things of like the classes and subclasses/races would help
It can be very helpful. There's a lot of ways to create your character. Some people start with a class and work from there, others have the backstory and then look at what class would suit them. There's really no wrong way to do it.
That's helpful for making your character, but once your character is made, you only really need to know your own features, in that regard.
that would make sense! I will kinda pick based on what i find interesting then, and probably leave the rest of what I need to know for the DM to tell me
Outside of making your own character, I think learning the rules for combat would be the next most important thing
cool, will read up on that too!
Not sure if this belongs here but I'm helping build out a Discord Server for a virtual campaign. We already integrated Avrae and decided to use it for the dice rolls as well. Any other bots/tips that could be useful in organizing or formatting would be helpful. To start it's 4 players.
Moring, New Player question.
We are looking to start up a family game and I have not played for many many many years.
I have it in my head to play a Swashbuckler style character.
So when I started looking for a race I thought that a Monkey based race would work well.
Low and behold I found that hadozee was a think and they seemed to be designed especially for what I wanted.
However, when I went to try my hand at the character creator on DnD Beyond that race is not an option.
TLDR
Here is the question, is the hadozee considered a non playable race?
It’s a race in the spelljammer book
Some books needs to be purchased in order to use
You can purchase individual race options for 1.99
Tupperbox is nice to distinguish player talk from PC talk, but it's not a necessity by any means.
Roger that - TY
Thanks I'll check it out
2 of the 4 players (and partially the DM) are only somewhat familiar with Discord and bots in general. Hoping to make it as streamlined as possible.
You could use beyond20 with dnd beyond character sheets.
The way it works is you simply click on a skill, attack, or ability and it sends the calculated rolls for you.
Can be used with roll20 or discord.
Hmm. That may be simpler than Avrae. But does that integration with Avrae not work the same? From the character sheet I mean?
Avrae can pull data from a dnd beyond character sheet but the user will still need to know the bot commands. Which could slow things down.
Whereas with beyond20 you just click on the dnd beyond character sheet and it sends the roll
Avrae can actually take dice rolls from the DnDBeyond character sheet and show it in a channel
So technically the user doesn't have to know the bot commands beyond importing their character
Yeah this is what I thought
Hi umm is this a dnd sever?
This is the official D&D Discord server run and operated by Wizards of the Coast, owners of D&D
Oh cool
If you or your players need help with Avrae, check out #ddb-avrae-help (and the official Avrae developer Discord - see Avare.io website for more info)
So uh how do I get started?
Check out the pinned messages in this channel. There are a ton of good resources for brand new players.
Yeah I was hoping this convo wouldn't lead to just Avrae help, was looking for more general help in making a server streamlined. I will have to compare beyond20 and Avrae separately. I did really just want to use Avrae but we'll see what works best
I love using Avrae but also understand it's not for everyone! Great tool to use as a DM to do quick rules, monsters, spells, and item lookups from official DnDBeyodn sources (assuming you own or have access to them on DnDBeyond)
Found it, ty again. I don't know why I was thinking that all the races would be available on the free version of the character creator. It makes sense that what you own dictates what you have access to.
I am purchasing the players bundle and hoping to just share with the other players in the campaign. Slightly worried about purchasing all that with the "looming" new update but I'll likely just do it anyway
I also really like Avrae, for the little I've played with it, just want to ensure the other players don't feel like they are learning a whole new language just to play
Same goes for the DM
I wouldn't worry too much about what's coming in 2024 - the game designers have said they want to keep things compatible and expect the game to work with folks playing with either the 2014 or 2024 rules. Obviously there is a lot of room for skepticism on that but we'll see. D&D 5e in it's current form won't just disappear.

Final question: Does the DM need to own the campaign and all the sourcebooks on beyond (plus subscription) to share with all the players, or can a player share with everyone in the campaign, including the DM?
Hopefully that makes sense.
To enable content sharing in a DnDBeyond campaign, someone in the campaign needs to have a Master Tier subscription. Then they can enable content sharing. The GM/DM of the campaign can then toggle what books are readable to the players but all content owned by everyone in the campaign is shared and usable in the Character Sheet tool.
Just needed to be sure that if me (a player) owned it then the DM can access the content too.
Sweet.
So I’m new to the whole DND thing and I wondered if online campaigns would be better then in person campaigns time wise?
what does better time wise mean
Like schedule wise. I probably shoulda worded it better 😅
probably scheduling and travel time blablabla
Then yes, the biggest strength online campaigns have imo is convenience
It all depends if people can meet up. It's much easier to stay at home then travel to another place.
Travel time wise then absolutely, assuming you don't need to go tot he library to participate
So I ask questions here
yes
First question we want to play D&D but we are still new and we wish for something special, not the normal
I just began and I don’t understand a single thing
Have you read the free Basic Rules?
Well, generally it isn't a good idea to stray from "the normal" if you don't actually understand the game or have experience with it
Training wheels & all exist for a reason
Learn the rules before you try to make something "special, not the normal" (aka "homebrew").
So I should go train 1st to understand the basics then return back to play it
People also default to DND but if you want to rp with friends and find the systems of DND boring/too complicated there are plenty of other games and systems
I would reccomend playing with the rules for a year and once you actually understand the system and why it works like that to start homebrewing
DND has starter content. Check em out, read the rules & try playing. Don't stress about making the experience super out there/unique
Keeping it simple and easy will be much less likely to overwhelm you and it'll be just as fun
D&D is a game of rules. You need to understand the fundamental rules first. You can't simply jump into playing it without knowing the rules.
Wow, a whole year I think that’s too much, but I still appreciate your help but it’s too much a whole year

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
he's saying play for a year before you make your own rules
I understand, but first of all, where can I find the rules so I can begin with them
^
I just linked them above.
That thing up there? Basic Rules.
Thank you and I appreciate your help I’m gonna go check and make sure I understand before I start anything. Thank you again
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I will my friend I will thanks again
What’s the best way to start finding people to play with in a campaign?
Reaching out to people you know who like similar things
And are one shots a good way to start for new players and DMs?
Yes.
Yeah one-shots are a good way to test the waters with a new group of folks
Awesome thanks. Now I just have to find friends…

yup, its pretty easy to find people online
Hi, so I'm new to DnD and I've read the basic rules book and made a character. Is there anything else I should do before joining a campaign?
well, normally you dont make a character before joining a campaign
You can start looking for a game to join if you like. Some options, you can post for yourself in #750812887697588356, you can also browse open games in #looking-for-players. If you want, you can also look at larger servers that have multiple people playing in #looking-for-community. Another option are sites like Roll20 where you can search for games.
I think you're ready to find a group to play with - be prepared to change your character to meet the requirements/needs of the campaign/group you're joining.
yeah, as long as you know the rules the barriers to joining a group are mainly finding a dynamic that fits what you want. There aren't exactly a ton of steps to it outside of what the campaign itself involves.
Okay got it. I was just bored honestly and I wanted to see what options I had for creation. But now I feel silly for trying to give it a somewhat thought out back story
I mean, there isn't anything wrong with writing up characters for fun but generally everyone has a better time designing a character for a campaign
something something cart before the horse
It's fine to make practice characters - just be prepared to adjust or remake a character based on the type of D&D game you're playing.
I think that's fine. You can adjust it to the campaign you'll join or make another character.
im a Newcomer for D&D, im looking for a group to show me the ins and outs of the game and are willing to explain things often, anybody can help me with that?

whats the command for that dynobot prompt
?looking
But do read #find-a-game carefully - so many folks miss important details there.
#frequently-asked-questions has the prompts.
Well thank you everyone. I will now be looking for a campaign that is willing to tolerate my lack of knowledge lol
Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as they are engaged, are trying to learn the rules (so the group doesn't have to teach them everything), and most importantly vibes well with the group.
I'm interested in learning it's just the role play aspects of the game I'm going to struggle with
I agree with UndyingNoob, though, I would recommend trying to find a group starting at level 1, or at max level 3. Anything higher than that can be very overwhelming when you are first starting
Oh yeah - higher levels means more character options and if you're new, that can be overwhelming to some folks
Especially spellcasters!
Be chill, but treat it real, not like a video game where people have two programmed responses.
It's OK to describe how your character talks. You don't need a funny voice and your thees and thous all lined up. Explain how you speak, and tell the DM what you want.
Ask questions. Sometimes something like "how could I get this door open?" is perfectly fair to ask.
Choose an alignment and background characteristics to define worldview and decision making, don't overthink it. If you'll come with the mindest of wanting the table to have fun, it's more then enough.
Also one last question. How long do campaigns typically last if all goes well?
the duration varies
anywhere from 3 hours to 3 decades
That really depends! It could last a single session if it's a one-shot. Or it could end up being multiple years! My brother's in a 20 year Dungeons and Dragons campaign, which has lasted over multiple edition changes
Oh wow. So I've just gotta consult the Dms to get a rough estimate of campaign length then
You got it!
There's a campaign run by a Canadian history professor that's been running on over 40+ years now.
My current campaign is approaching its second anniversary and if things don't fall apart it'll be at least another 2.5 years until the PCs confront the BBEG.
average campaign duration
I'm in a very awkward time zone for a lot of these campaigns
nice

Does any know any services to make a dnd character they little to no paid resources or paid limits
DnDbeyond allows you to build anything from the free basic rules/SRD.
Everything else has to be paid for. Even if using Roll20, or Fantasy Grounds (other tools/services that are licensed to offer D&D books)
You could use Avrae's Google sheet or even the PDF sheets to also create a character sheet - but again you'd need to refer to the books and do most of the setup yourself.
Ok
But do note, all you need to start playing D&D can be found in the free basic rules. Everything else just adds additional options, rules, and adventures.
Not sure how you got here but welcome to the official D&D server run by Wizards of the Coast, the folks behind D&D
Hiiiii
I personally just looked stuff up, and added things to the character sheet myself on Roll20
So long story short, me and couple of friends with 0 experience in DnD are trying to find a good defloult game
Can somebody help
Have you read the free basic rules and have a general idea of how the game works and how to make a character sheet?

not the server, the game
Oh sorry mb

but also never a bad idea to know the Server Rules either

K - got to dip. Take care!
Well, actually, I had played a couple games, but it was when I was 14 and It was mostly homebrew and
Thanks I'll check it out
Its complicated
It's likely easier after a while, repetition helps to understand yknow
Probably
Same with a lotta stuff
I just like making fanstasy charachters idk
Same here, what's your go to?
Not sure what youre meaning by that but I like half-elves
And mage-warriors
Any reason?
shouldn't take too long to get acquainted with basic rules then, 5e at least is surprisingly very beginner friendly in my experience
I think theyre neat
For some reason mage warrior makes me think of Fenrir from dragon age 2
Or a defoult ahh dude with a sword in one hand and fireball in other
Nothing wrong with that
Well whats yours then
Not really sure tbh, I like to bring a little chaos 😅
Does any know a way to find a game to join as a newcomer
DMs post open and available games in #looking-for-players
I think someone mentioned find a game channel for rules and the like
If you want something specific, read the rules of #find-a-game and then post in #750812887697588356
Aight gn lads I slept for 3 hours today and i really need some rest
Oh ok thanks
Take care
I’m not able to post in looking for dm…

It’s confusing ngl
In any channel, type /looking and a list of prompts will pop up. Click the appropriate one and hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post it in the channel you chose.
Ahhhh ok thanks that’s wayyyy simple way to say it
Looking to learn it has been a while since my last adventure
Welcome! There’s some helpful links a few message up to get you started, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
A 20-sided die. DnD uses several unusual die types that are abbreviated d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. The number after the "D" tells you how many sides the die has.
same here i am new
Running a starter set adventure with pre-generated characters is a good way to start. It takes a lot of the early learning lad off both the DM and the players. I recommend you do it as a one-shot, and then start your campaign with the players making new characters to play in it now that they have an idea of what classes, abilities, etc. are.
The basic mechanic of the game is the D20 system. If you are making a skill check to open a lock, making a saving throw to avoid taking damage, or attacking an orc, you will roll a 20-sided die, add an ability modifier, and add your proficiency bonus if applicable, and then compare it to a target number. Sometimes, there are situational modifiers that are applied (for example, if you are shooting a bow while hiding behind a low wall). If you meet or exceed the target number, you succeed at what you are trying. Once you have this basic mechanic down, the rest of the rules are easier to add and use.
Can anyone give me an idea of how to play I get the idea of it but I don't now how you actually play
You tell the DM what your character does, and any time something has a reasonable chance of success or failure, you make rolls using your character's statistics.
Oh OK thank you
So I made a character in dnd beyond’s character creation tool and I was wonder what else I need to have for an actual game?Like i feel like I probably need more for it to be good enough for a dnd character but idk.i just started trying to learn dnd stuff a week ago.
If you feel you're ready, go find a group to play with. See #find-a-game (read it carefully) for useful tips as well as instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
hello i am currently looking for a campaign and i am also new to the game but i have time on my shedule and im eager to play, however i would like to join a campaign that has not been started yet as i would like to get the grasp of thing from the beginning and not just get bombed with a bunch of stuff and preferably something that doesnt have too many people if anyone can dm me it would be great
Hey Im new to D&D and have made a character recently but don't have any idea of joining a group for D&D
same here man if u have any luck let me know pls haha
Sure thing lol
You'll find instructions for finding a game in 😎 #find-a-game
thanks
but isnt that for dms to post where can i as player post?

oh great ty

While in #looking-for-players there's posts by the DMs looking for players
thank you very much all
oh hah stupid question but how do i post there i dont see an option?
i dont see it haha
#find-a-game lists commands for making posts in the "submitting a post"
I’ve never played dnd but i really want to start, what should i start with?
Reading the free basic rules is a good start 👍
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Here
Hello all!
hellooooo
same here
Nice! Im just reading the rules and trying to figure this all out
I've read some, i don't understand it entirely but yeah
lmao same
It is what it is
You are not expected to read them all at once
Dm me if you wanted to play together sometimes, maybe we could learn together
Who knows
Exactly 😭
Do it at your pace. Watch the critical role videos. Watch some live plays
Sure, sounds fun
@unreal moat Here is something you need to know about the rulebooks:
- It's nice to learn as much as you can, but it is not required to memorize every single rule!
- Think about the class that interests you most, and focus solely on that material.
That's the role of the character sheet, to take note of the features important for your character !
The Basic Rules will help you a lot. :3
Ok thanks a lot!
Hello
hi!
I'm new to dnd but I've been writing characters and reading lore/basic rules for a little while now just haven't found and dungeons masters
If you’re looking for a game to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Ok cool thanks
New to DND #find-a-game
Saying the name of the channel won’t find you a game, I’m afraid. 😅
If you actually go to that channel, though, it has instructions to get you started.
does anyone have maybe video suggestions on basic info for those getting into dnd? i'll research more as i go on but it feels a bit daunting when i look at the online forums
Thanks
DnD is just little baby steps, so don't worry about learning everything. A decent video guide to character creation is One Shot Questers' "How to Play Dungeons and Dragons | A Quick Beginners Guide" on youtube.

hi i know very little about dnd
westmarch is more player driven?
So I’ve never played this game… it looks super fun, any suggestions?
I suppose you know more than me as I’m not even sure what westmarch is lol
its kinda like, an overarching way of structuring a campaign ig
the bot has failed thee, old one
A Westmarch is a server where there are multiple DMs who run an ongoing world.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
thanks will do!
I find the ‘viva la dirt league’ take on dnd very entertaining. They have all episodes on youtube
I am aware that it’s more entertainment then “real gaming”, but you do learn the rules a bit by watching (plus, its fun!)
Episode 1
I see alright, i mean i already got my character ready
thank you !! :D
how exactly should i go about finding a game with others who wont mind me being a newcomer?
Check #find-a-game
Im doing the same aa you are doing. Asking around. :-D. Havent played yet, dont have friends who do play. Im looking on Discord and Reddit for groups in my neighbourhood or online games. I hope i find a fitting time some time soon 😊
i wish you luck!
You 2!
I am, uh, assuming artificer is really complicated for a newbie.
I just like the idea of making little magical doodads
Is it more important to know the stuff in the player's handbook or the dm's guide?
I want to read them but I don't know which one to pick so yeah
thats fair, i tend to analyze everything too hard as well
hey, im new and wanna join a dnd game. I have never played one before but it sounds super fun.
how do i get into a dnd game
I recommend you read the free Basic Rules first before you join a game. This will make it easer for the DM who won't need to pause the game to explain the fundamental rules to you.

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Isn't DND Beyond sorta paywally?
roughly how long is all of this
seems pretty long, not all of the info is needed immediately though
i dont think it would be reasonable or feasible to memorize rules on diseases, every classes' available spells, and underwater combat interactions instantly lol
up to you but bear in mind there's only so prepared you can get
You just get an idea of the basic rules so you can follow how to play the game at a basic level. Creating character sheets has really helped me to understand the rules as well.
Also just starting.
Some people will definetly take more away from watching videos but I like a mix of both reading/videos. We'll see how well it all worked out when my first campaign kicks off.
Some spells like bless require items like holy water, or others take a diamond. Are these things you find along the way or is there a one stop shop for all class related items?
If I understand correctly, there are certain... tools that let you evade the need for spell components that would be consumed under normal circumstances?
I don't remember this stuff well, but I think an artificer I played once was using their tools to cast stuff.
are echo knights homebrew content?
Knowing what's homebrew and what's not can be confusing. However Echo Knights aren't homebrew.
Explorers Guide to Wildemount subclass.
Spamming that message might get you in trouble, Phantom. I'd stick to #looking-for-players if I were you.
Just a friendly warning. The mods might not be as friendly.
ig
I get that. I really do. But the mods are very strict with the rules.
should i roll dice for my character sheet before or after im in a game
After you get a DM.
thx
Yes
Is it a situation where you can only use it so many times before resting?
Can you use it before and after normal actions?
Have you read the Basic Rules yet?
Not thoroughly, no
Read this section:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#YourTurn
Thanks :)
Yes. You always have a bonus action on your turn. However you can only do certain things with a bonus action. You'll find that using your bonus action won't be useful every turn as they typically have you cast very specific spells or use specific abilties.
I'm curious though. Is this a text based game?
You can take a bonus action only when a special ability, spell, or other feature of the game states that you can do something as a bonus action. You otherwise don't have a bonus action to take.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
Heyyy yall, big question. I’m a elven rouge, weird combo I know, imma jump straight to it. Uhm if I fail a sneak but roll a critical success for deceptions, could I technically make that person think I’m not there?
How bad did you fail the stealth?
Uhmmmm, a 9
Like you barely failed
Yea
Fair enough, but with this info, imma make my dm’s life a living hell, thankssss
This is going to be DM dependent. Nat 20s only guarantee success on what the DM believes is the best possible outcome.
So I have a question and I need your help answering it. So I’m new to dungeons and dragons and I’ve ran into an issue so I’m trying to create my character but I don’t know what my class or race should be. So I wanted to ask what are some beginner classes and what are some good races for that class?
Martial classes like monk, fighter, and barbarian are very new player friendly.
You can't just talk someone into thinking you don't exist. It's not mind control or fallout speech checks.
You could deceive them into thinking that you're supposed to be there, like being an inspector or something, or pulling a made-up noble title and a guard goes "oh this must be some political thing I better not make a scandal", whatever
but it's about actually deceiving
Telling someone you're not real or not there... wouldn't work the same way talking to someone and saying you're not real or not there, wouldn't work.
any race works with any class, generally
Nat20’s in skill checks do not guarantee anything
In combat its an automatic hit
But RAW, for skill checks there is no such auto success
The DM sets the DC
If you beat it you succeed, but the dm determines the context of your success depending on what is possible
if you want to throw a rock at the moon, rolling a nat20, rolling a 30 you arent hitting the moon
But a DM may reward you by saying the throw is pretty
Ah That’s right. Rules as written, only counts as for combat .
It’s not that it only counts for combat. It’s that rolling a nat 20 only has an effect on attack rolls. It does not have an effect on ability checks or saving throws
(Other than death saves)
Sure, that too
But the point being, an ability check made in combat and an ability check made out of combat would both have no additional effect on a nat 20, and can still fail if the total doesn’t beat the DC. Combat isn’t the deciding factor. The type of roll is
Hey so I just finished my session, that thing I did just than, yea it worked, so I did it five more times. And now I am the richest in the party, just saying thanks
that isnt really normal
Well not critical successes but a bit higher numbers and somebody’s sneaks here and there
loot is normally more divided evenly, but if your DM and table are cool with it, it may lead to role playing opportunities
Hello everyone, I’m new to DND, an I’m looking for a group to play DND with
Is anyone a DM?
An looking for a new player?
If not is ok, I just really wanted to get into DND
First step is learning how to play
Start with the materials in the pinned posts
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
An once I do this I’ll be able to play in a group?
You'll have to look for a group. Fortunately this servers has channels for that.
d&d is a social experience. Finding a group is like finding people to do anything with. Might be quick. Might take a bit. Its not a video game
Ah ok good I’m just starting out so it may take a little bit for me to get it all
This helped me a lot https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
How do you actually learn this game I’m new to it and wondering

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
I mean I have read the entire players handbook so I’m not sure if this will help
What's confusing you then?
What I’m wondering mostly about is how to actually memorize most of the stuff
you don't need to memorize the entire thing
You don't memorise it
Certainly not most of it
Instead you write down what you use most often and reference everything else
You'll probably memorize the rules most common in usage, but you should ideally at least know where to look things up.
For example, you don't need to memorise what Fireball does, instead you just write down Fireball as one of your known spells and then jot down the page number where you can look it up
Yeah but it’s mostly the large amount of rules for combat exploration and stuff like that in specific scenarios that’s hard to remember for me
And getting the dm in games when I’m a player to let me rob people
Again, you don't need to memorise those things, just look them up as and when you need them. The more you do that, the more you'll just pick up and remember
As for this, I'd maybe focus on getting into a game with a less.....confrontational goal
I mean I just rob the rich npcs
That's still confrontational
That's a goal that's not very likely to mesh with playing D&D as a part of a party
D&D is a group collaborative game. If you go wandering off robbing people it may go against the interest of the party (such as the adventure quests). The DM may place the party in a non-urban area where there are no rich people to rob.
Look I just care about the money I’m not looking for a adventure I just want to be rich and pay off the hard enemies if I need to
And yes I know beasts and stuff that can’t think that advanced is immune to this
Okay, well good luck finding a table to play at
hi everyone, im getting into dnd after years of wanting to play it. any specific advice for a murder mystery-ish campaign i want to host as a dm?
I recommend asking for DMing advice in #dm-discussion
oh my god sorry for using the wrong channel lol i just joined this server. thanks!!
That sounds like a character concept that won't mesh well with a lot of games so you may want to reconsider in order to increase your odds of finding a game
@cobalt frigate tbh i just wanna learn how to do my attacks n stuff
i know most of the basic rules from videos but i have no idea how to do the rest
You watched the "Handbooker Helper" videos?
not him specifically but ive watched other channels
That's too vague to explain for. What in 'the rest' do you need to know?
Also, taking a read through the Basic Rules would help
it's not a "him", it's a series
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
thx
well i havent senn the series yet
btw do u know if it takes alot of time/ work to find a group
it often does
even online??
DND may require some organization and thinking, but it can be extremely rewarding for the freedom and the variety of story it can make.
Especially so, considering timezones.
And internet reliability.
And hardware issues.
There are waaaaay more players than DMs so openings at tables are hard to come by for players.
how long do u think it takes?
literally anywhere from hours to months
can i get help here for dndbeyond stuff?
If you need technical support we have #ddb-support for that.
ty
hi!! i have 0 experience in playing dnd and i want to learn it as a new year’s resolution. can i get some opinions here? how do you find friends that can play dnd with you? i’m thinking more about the convenience. because there are time zones, and schedules, and so many different elements you have to take into consideration when finding the perfect group. also, do you guys often play with irl friends or online friends?
Have you checked with folks around you if they may be interested in trying out D&D?
I was just about to ask all these
We have some useful resources linked to in the pinned messages here
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
^ But give #find-a-game a read as it has some useful tips and important info on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
yes but there’s only one 😢 i think my only solution may be online games?
Sure - that may be an option
Can I base my character off someone else or is that not allowed at all?
cuz i'm really not that creative
thank you so much!! 💖 i’ll check these resources and see if they’re of any help :DD
D&D is full of pop cultural references so yeah, feel free to be inspired by things outside of D&D. Just don't expect everything to work exactly 1 to 1 as your source of inspiration.
i kinda wanna make todo from jjk is something like that even possible
I can like use his ability right
I don't know what that is but look at the various classes and races and pick the ones that have similar mechanics to what you're trying to achieve. Then work with your Dungeon Master and group to figure out how to flavor it to work for you and the kind of D&D game you're playing.
Ah thank you
i guess i'll go make myself something and then get to reading
gonna try to figure this customization out
Generally "flavor is free" - meaning as long as it has no mechanical impact you can describe it as whatever.
Mechanics though - that's something you shouldn't try and change at least not without Dungeon Master and other players in your group's buy in and advice.
How do I play dungeons and dragons?
Read the rules (see pinned message here in the channel to find a link to the free basic rules), make a character sheet, find a group, and start playing.

Thanks mate
Okay, so some friends and I decided to try playing dnd and we decided I was gonna be the DM, but there's some things I don't quite understand, like what's the purpose of some skills, like "Performance"? I haven't fully read the rule book yet, is it explained it it?
Performance could be acting, singing, dancing, so on. And the rulebook will explain the use of the different skills.
Okay thanks
Oh okay, I get it
Anyone looking for a party to join? Dm me for details, need two to three people
Check out #find-a-game and then try posting in #looking-for-players

I have a question about something in #find-a-game that isn't covered in the FAQ; when it says that you can only post once a week, is it a Monday to Sunday situation, or the kind where you have to wait 7 days?
7 days since last, IIRC
Hello everyone nice to meet you! Looking for a party to join for the first time. I am a beginner with no experience, now checking the channels 🙂
Good morning! I'm new here 😄 I'm looking for games to play- I'm a novice with some experience in playing. I'm also working on creating a campaign for the first time, I'd love some advice!
Welcome. If you are looking to join a campaign, you can go to the #find-a-game channel and scroll to the top for instructions on how to find one
Hi, I'm mel, and its been a while since ive been here
Do we find out how to play there too? Where do we find the rules and guidelines?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

If you need help learning how to play D&D, the bot post above has some very helpful links for getting started, including a link to the free basic rulebook, and some explainer videos. After you've given the materials there a look-through, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this channel. That's what its here for!
Appreciate it
So I am a DM who specializes in new players as a lot of my players are actually kids. I'm looking to set up a game and am currently looking for players. Its not gonna be kid friendly necessarily but i AM new to discord for DnD so like...i'm willing to be patient with new players if they can be patient while I figure out discord lol
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I already have a couple of sessions written out and am relatively ready for players now.
check out the find a game channel and you can make a post there to advertise your game
If you'd like to advertise your games so that new players can find them, you'll want to make a post in #looking-for-players
To do so, you'll need to use our server bot, and fill out the form it gives you. The #find-a-game has instructions for how to do so. You'll have to scroll to the top to read it all
this is just a lot. its really big and a lot of rules and a lot to read. I have ADHD and am struggling with all the stuff on the screen. I'll give it another try but i'm not sure I understand discord well enough to use this server
Yeah I get that. If it helps, you can go to id:customize to select which channels do and don't show up on your list. Narrowing it down a bit so you only see things you are specifically interested in might help you
So I feel like im going in circles. I go to looking for players which takes me to find a game
where instructions say : ## How do I submit a post?
You won't be able to post directly in our #looking-for channels. Instead, posts are submitted using a bot. For more information, see Join as a Player or Join as a DM. For the full list of commands, see Channels & Commands.
so im literally being sent in circles lol
i just cant find actual instructions on how to post in looking for players.
it says i dont have permission to post in looking for players
these may be dumb questions but ive never used discord this way :/
so the idea is you type a command in a channel and then youll be given a private form to fill out
but the channel wont allow me to type
and the command you have to use is determined by the criteria listed
the commands work in any channel
the text box is saying "You do not have permission to send messages in this channel" so i cant type a command at all
yes but you cans end the command in this channel
no problem good luck filling it out
Thank you!! 😊
do Gloom stalker have advanced while in darkness?
Hellooo, my name is Noah and I'm a RPG illustrator (and DM~~) it is a pleasure to be here!!
i believe you mean advantage and depending on the enemy youre fighting youll benefit from being unseen and thus gain advantage on attack rolls
Welcome! And I feel ya, I am cripplingly anxious about having to play some day, but I also really want to, it's a struggle fr
What’s is the most powerful monster in dnd?
The one the DM decides is the most Powerful
but Tiamat and Tarrasques are up there
the tarraseque i think it was called?
The aspect of Bahamut and the aspect of Tiamat are both CR 30 so they're pretty powerful.
people consider greatwyrms and sul katesh pretty challenging
basically like how difficult is this monster rating
oh
with 30 being the highest
okay
Wait what cr is a tarrasque?
also 30 i believe
K
emm also now that one of you mentioned it how do i join a dnd campain?
A CR of 30 is the highest CR and the only ones with a CR 30 are the most powerful beings in DnD
For further monster discussion, please use #dnd-discussion - we should leave this channel free for new to D&D folks to get started in understanding basic game mechanics and core concepts.
Go to #looking-for-players for that
Hit die are based on your class - each level of a class you have you get a hit die appropriate for that class. Hit dice determine your hit points if rolling them on each level up. They are also used when taking short rests to be used to refresh your hit points - e.g. taking a short rest and you decide your character will use 3 of it's hit dice to try and recover some HP. Roll those dice, update your HP based on the roll (and constitution modifier), then remove those hit dice from your pool of hit dice until you take a long rest.
guys can finding a game take months?
potentially yes
aw man
usually not though
There's new postings in #looking-for-players daily!
Dnd is a collaborative game involving people. Finding people to play with is like finding people to do any social activity
might be quick. Might be long
How long it takes usually depends on your approach. Passive searching, where you make a post and wait for people to reach out to you is going to take the longest if you’re a player.
As there are a lot more players than DMs out there.
Though there are more proactive approaches.
My recommendation is to engage with a dnd community and play in a community campaign. Then forming a dnd group with the people you enjoy interacting with.
How often are these community campaigns?
Well there are two types of community campaigns out there Adventures League and West Marches.
Adventures League is the official community campaign for D&D. And it’s always ongoing.Think of like an MMO where you can play different quests and each quest is often run by a different DM.
We have a channel called #adventurers-league where you can learn more and #1050206572535623690 can point you to players and places that host AL events.
Oooo. Sounds fun
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.
[Find out more](#al-rules-compendium message)
Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
and what about West March?
Westmarch is a style of play where there is no set group of adventurers or DM. When enough players have a group and confirm they can play at a set date/time, a DM who is available can take the group and run an adventure. Most games tend to be sandbox exploration in a "living world" (in that what one group of adventurer's does can impact another adventuring party's experience such as if another adventuring party comes across a dungeon that's already been explored there may not be monsters or loot left). Such games tend to be less focussed on telling a specific story and are more "explore the world" focussed.
This is very generalized.
cool
West Marches can vary from place to place and you typically can’t port a character from one West Marches campaign to another.
Should I avoid westmarches as a new player?
I would recommend a more normal campaign or one shot
Is a oneshot just a single session
Yes
Im thinkn about dming my first session, and suggestion on how i should prepare
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Thank you
hello
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Hey could someone define an opportunity attack
Sure - enemy creature moves away from your character, your character can use their reaction to make a melee attack against them before they finish leaving your "space".
That is an attack of opportunity
Here is a link to the full rules on opportunity attacks:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#OpportunityAttacks
Think of an enemy carelessly moving away from you, giving you an opportunity to attack. An attack of opportunity if you. 🥁
However if an enemy is careful you don't get an opportunity to attack. The Disengage action stops you from attacking an enemy who is running away.
Hi, I'm a new dnd player and wanted to start a game, before I ask to join a group is there anything I should prep other than a character sheet?
Give the free basic rules a skim and get familiar with skill checks, saving throws, and attack rolls (and where to find the info on the character sheet for adding in bonuses and modifiers to these rolls).
Okay thank you @echo kelp
hey can anyone guide me through character creation im very new to the game and i have the players handbook but have no clue what im doin
Did you read the first four chapters of the Basic Rules? Those cover character creation.
They have the PHB
The first chapter in the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) goes step by step through character creation. Read through that and if you have any specific questions you can ask here. You can also use DnDBeyond's character creation tool which has a guided build for new players. Still recommend reading the rules though.
That should have the same stuff, so…read that
I also highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. Linked above.
i tried creating my characters on dnd beyond but my options for stuff was limited
To access anything more than what's available in the SRD/Free Basic Rules you have to own that content on DnDBeyond
ok
You can buy individual subclasses/races/spells/items for as low as $1.99 - anything you buy this way will be deducted from the book if you ever buy the whole book on DnDbeyond.
see i already own the book but i didnt buy it through dnd beyond
You can use DnDBeyond's homebrew tools to recreate things as needed - just note you can not publish them for the general community to use (no need to publish it at all - you can still use your own unpublished homebrew for yourself and any campaigns you join).
That said, you don't have to use DnDbeyond either - you can use the PDF character sheets and fill them out following the steps outlined in the free basic rules.
Hi I am new here, I played a few sessions but not a full game game. I played I think 5 sessions so far…
It wouldnt be impossible to sell the book and then buy it digitally. Or just keep an extra physical copy
Hello, I'm new here, I've never played but I'm interested

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
yo i have a very quick question, again me and my friends are doing a dnd session just a quick one off, im the rough, the ability sneak attack is overpowered, but uhh..my dagger broke, wtf do i do??
Weapons don't normally break.
Assuming you used the standard starting equipment for a rogue, you should have had two daggers.
So use the other one.
You should also have a rapier or a shortsword.
And a shortbow or a shortsword.
sick thanks
im...so new to dnd and i want to join a game but also im so terrified because i have no idea how to do anything at all. but im also the most hands on learner. But im also terrified!

well ok like... i know things i like. i vaguely know how things work. i wont learn anymore by reading, i need to play but also im absolutely terrified
petrified even
Handbooker Helper videos, linked above.
D&D is a game of rules. Eventually you need to read the rules.
i dont learn much through videos bc i struggle to pay attention when im not actively involved </3
There are also visual guides available on DMs guild.
yes i know the rules
Well, you're unlikely to get into a game if you're unwilling to learn the rules.
I know them
how would you go about joining a campaign
Check #find-a-game
Now begins the waiting. Check #find-a-game , send out a couple of asks, look around at Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo, and have patience.
i am scared ! to do that!
Well, if you want to play then you have to search. Noone else can do that for you.
If you have social anxiety, I’d recommend playing a one shot with friends and family or anyone you are comfortable playing with as you work up towards playing with others.
There are waaaaay more players than DMs so it may take you hours to months to find a table to play at.
yeah yeah i know that im just nervous to like. intrude i guess??
the only dnd group i can get is one where i dm 😱
Why would you intrude? DMs look for new players all the time. It's not intrusive if they're looking.
which ive agreed to because that seems really fun but ive been itching to Play . and i cant do that with my group
um hello..
i dont.. know? call it anxiety i guess
Perhaps you should have that resolved first because D&D is a social game. Communication is key in the game.
There are a couple of options:
- Find games at your local game shop, school, library, and conventions.
- Join a play by post game.
- Play Baldurs Gate 3
does anyone have any ideas why i can't see my posts or anything but the guides in fina-a-game
Hey there welcome
im the same with other ttrpg, it takes me a bit to push myself in but once i am im in its just the initial push thats. Hoiguh
i was like this w botc when i originally started playing but i dont even remember how i got over that
so..been a long time i plat dnd my 1 time was with a dnd who was not a good dm
Find a game is the instructions page, your post end up in channels like #750812887697588356 , #looking-for-players depending on what you select.
oh ok. thanks
for some reason it says i dont have permision to comment in looking-for-dm
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
The prompt is in #find-a-game
do most game take place in d20?
Do you mean roll20?
yes
Online games take place in different platforms.
- Some play theater of the mind, where it’s all imagination. These are played on anything that can support group calls.
- Others are played using Virtual Tabletops. There is a lot out there.
You have Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, Fantasy Grounds, Alchemy RPG, Talespire, even dnd beyond has their own vtt that is in early access.
so how patients are the DM to new players?
Like anything else it will vary from person to person.
I often recommend players to one shots and D&D's official community campaign because they are self contained adventures and certain one shots are catered for new players specifically.
If it says newcomers welcome, go for it. If it says we're looking for a fourth member to refill our party, starting level ten, a sheet full of house rules? Maybe leave that for now.
For new players, I often recommend playing games that you start at level one. This allows you keep things as simple as possible and as the character levels up, you work your way up to more complex things.
I need a party to play with man, none of my friends want to play

Magic!
Take your time reading the instructions in #find-a-game
The channel will give you instructions on how to submit a post.
When submitting a post I recommend using Hammer time when mentioning your availability
Link here: https://hammertime.cyou/
This allows people to view the times selected to be displayed in their local time zone.
Kobolds aren't that small, are they?
it would appear so
They are “small” size category, so yeah they’re usually 3ft or so iirc
is that so
Hey how do you start a game?
As a player or as a DM?
Player
Check #find-a-game
There are two ways to join a game: Passively and Actively.
The passive approach is reading the instructions in #find-a-game and make a posting that you are looking for a DM and waiting for someone to respond.
This approach tends to take the longest as there are always more players than there are DMs.
im hopin to find one maybe you will as well
The active approach is reaching out to posts in #looking-for-players and seek out DMs that are looking for players. You can also reach out to people here and try to find others to form a group.
Also check the #looking-for-community postings - those are other D&D servers that may have D&D games available
Yep, what Undying recommended.
imm a do that
I also recommend new players to look into D&D's official community campaign, in which you can learn more about in #adventurers-league and check out #1050206572535623690 as events are a good way to meet other players and DMs.
I'm new to dnd and i want to know more about the overall lore. Can someone give me a lore drop? (I know some basic dnd lore because i played bg3)
Lore is context and setting dependent - there is no "this is the only true D&D lore" beyond what a table decides to adapt and what specific setting books may have presented (and again tables may not run with that specific lore).
Oooh i see. I just wanted to know more about some of the gods specifically. Thank u :3
oi what should i do for anything that could be upcoming
Can you clarify?
Deities are setting specific. The free Basic Rules has sample gods from official campaign settings.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
like i saw people talking about forum and charater sheets i dont understand
Can you be more specific about what's confusing?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I believe BDG3 follows the forgotten realms setting The basic rules will cover that quite a few of them.
dnd beyond and such
Okay let's setup a base line do you know the basic rules?
How to create a character?
no
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
The basic rules can get you started. If you are more of a visual learner, the Handbooker Helper series does a good job.
Since you brought up dnd beyond, it is the website that WOTC owns. It's also the company that own D&D.
It has an easy to follow character creator, forums for finding players, DMs, and asking questions, and all sorts of tools for players and DMs.
thank you i tried to do this before but i was told to "figure it out"
Take your time going through the first 4 chapters of the basic rules, watch a few videos that were recommended, and try creating a few characters on dnd beyond for practice.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
thank lad
It's some Discord thing for Community Servers I think - something called Server Flair.
But not a newcomer question so we'll end the topic here.
I'd ask in #moderator-support to speak with a moderator and they can direct you to the most appropriate channel - but this specific topic could fit in #non-dnd-topics as it's not D&D and it's about a Discord feature.
Uhm, I just realized something
I have 0 clue on how to make a character sheet.
Also check out the first chapter of the free basic rules - it goes over the step by step process of making a character.
I got dark shard amulet, is it good? What can I do with it?
I want my dnd character character to be a feline but dnd beyond doesn't offer anything like that.
It... does what it says it does?
For feline characters you have the tabaxi.
You can find Tabaxi in Monsters of the Multiverse
You can buy the whole book, just the races, or just the tabaxi race.
Let me rephrase that, what warlock spells can I use?
uh...
Yours.
I'm a ranger
You have to be a warlock to attune to it.
Specifically cantrips from the warlock spell list, the requirement is that you need to be a Warlock.
Did you get it from a home campaign or a community campaign like AL?
Then your best bet is to trade it with another character for a different magic item of the same rarity. In this case Common rarity.
Though if it's not AL, you'll have to check what the rules for trading are.
I see, what item do you recommend I trade it for that will be useful for a ranger gloom stalker
What type of community campaign did you get it from?
I don't know how to answer that
Was it a one shot from Adventures League? Or a West Marches game?
This?
"Legends of the 5th Dawn is an Eberron discord West-Marches server for D&d 5E!"
Ah so it's a West-Marches using the Eberron setting.
I would recommend a Moon Touched sword as it's a weapon and magical so it can bypass resistances to non-magical attacks.
Again, I would ask the people in that server if trading between player characters is allowed. Keep in mind that every west marches campaigns will have their own set of rules.
Thank you so much
Go to Marketplace, then select "Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse", then scroll down to races. Here is the link to save some time: https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
@lyric fjord good luck and have fun
ive never played a game of d&d in my life what should i do to get into a game
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Would it be a acceptable for me to post a Google Document in #character-discussion detailing one of my characters' backstories so I could get some input and advice on what class to start them as?
Nothing particularly large; just over one page
Typically it's recommended to create a backstory based on the setting, tone, and theme of the campaign the DM is presenting to the group.
If you have more of a character concept, #character-discussion can help you with that.
Most of my sheets assume a Forgotten Realms campaign or homebrew incorporating the deities of the same
Go through the basic rules, watch the Handbooker helper series, and try creating a few practice characters on dnd beyond. The bot has a the links needed.
Roughly half my characters are either Drow or half-Drow, with the rest being human or Dragonborn
i've gone through the basic rules, i can watch the handbooker helper series rn and ive created 2 characters 1 with the help of an experienced player. what do i need to do to join a beginner-friendly online campaign is what i meant to ask
ah.
There are couple of avenues worth pursuing.
In this server specifically:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690
You can also check forums on roll20 and dndbeyond as they also have resources for finding groups and games to participate in.
if you want to share your character backstory in #character-discussion feel free but for best results I would recommend providing a short summary in the chat instead. The less steps involved, the easier it is to get feedback.
@lyric fjord good luck and have fun
Hello

Read the free Basic Rules.
Making a character on D&D Beyond is pointless if you don't know nor understand what all that means.
Yeah I kinda figured I was doing it for no reason 😂 it was fun tough
D&D Beyond is just a site for character sheets and the digital books.
Yeah I downloaded the basic rules I’ll give it a read tomorrow.
literally have never played in my life (I've rolelayed before if its even remotely similar) It does look fun and i really do wanna get into it. Anyone got any tips for me to start
Start with the Basic Rules up there, Handbooker Helper videos are also available. Then hit up https://www.dndbeyond.com/ and have a go at making a character for practice.
Hello, uhh I'm new here! Though I've learnt the basics from my friends who's been teaching me. Right now im in a process to creating a character. But it seems that i needed some help and someone to answer my questions...
Feel free to ask away
So I already have the player handbook and a sheet given from my friend, is it better to make my character from dnd beyond or manually?
Up to you which ever is convenient.
I recommend the manual way so you'll learn how the math behind creating your character.
If it's modifiers, my friend already told me how to calculate each rolls and modifiers
can someone please help me?
i dont understand how my spells hit chance is calculated?
as in i roll a d20 and if its greater than the creature ac it hits
but do i add a bonus to it of some kind? like prof or something?
spell attacks are calculated like this:
d20+spellcasting modifier + proficiency bonus
whats my spellcasting modifier?
What class
whats your class?
1st level fighter 2 levels in cleric?
you hit if you meet or beat the enemy AC, not just when you roll higher
Wisdom
thanks 🙂
I’m assuming your wisdom is 13 or higher?
yes
spells sourced from the Cleric class will be based on Wisdom
your Fighter level is irrelevant to that, outside of proficiency and total character level but that's a different can of worms
But what's your WIS score specifically?
As a 3rd level character, your proficiency bonus is +2, and with 18 wisdom, your wisdom modifier is +4
and yep, 2+4=6
As for a spell save DC, the number other creatures would have to meet or beat on a saving throw against something like... sacred flame, it's calculated as 8+prof+mod
so in your case, DC 14
and thats for all saving throws i like, impose on an enemy?
If you cast a Cleric spell that forces a saving throw, you'll notice it doesn't have a set DC in the spell description. That's because it's your spell save DC, as a cleric, being DC 14 in your case with 2prof 4wis.
So yes, if you cast, say, Sacred Flame, the target would have to make a Dexterity saving throw, only succeeding if they get a total of 14 or higher.
thanks for the help 🙂
Also, one of the best pieces of advice:
Things only do what they say they do; Exactly what they say they do, no more, no less ||(unless they say they can do more or less dependent on whatever)||
It'll be very important for Spells. They do exactly what they say they do, so reading them with intent is going to work much better than a skim. But don't feel too bad, anyone can make mistakes. There are people with careers on the game for like 5+ years who still make mistakes, even on basic spells, induced via skimming due to a stressful situation.
(An example of this is the Command spell: It gives a list of some exact mechanical effects for an exact used word, but also tells you that you can work with your DM on saying a different one-word command)
I have question, my friend said that level 1 bard have 4 known spells right, does that include 2 cantrips 2 level 1 spells. Or is it 2 cantrips 4 level 1 spells?
Uhhh why do I have 3 cantrips...
Did your race grant you a cantrip?
Uhhh let me see
Also note that you can know more spells than you have slots to cast leveled spells
Yep, high elf
There you go - so due to your race, you know one cantrip from the wizards' spell list.
And that means...?
Meaning of the 4 leveled (not cantrip) spells you know, you might only be able to cast two of them per long rest.
spell slots are your ammunition for yours pells but youc an know more spells than you have ammunition for in early levels
If I were to say it in JRPG language, it would be out of 4 spells i know I can only use 2 because they consume all of my mana, like that?
And I need a long rest to replenish my mana, something along that way?
roughly
I have another question
That's what this channel is for (among the many, many other channels we have)
It's often more enlightening to ask, than asking to ask :P
Hey I am going to be playing in my first game soon, is there anything i should keep on hand other than dice and character sheet to make things go smoother?
Having a rough idea of where to find things in the free basic rules or players handbook if questions arise can be helpful - again no need to memorize the rules but knowing where to look things up can be useful.
i will bring my players handbook and mark a few pages then ^^ thank you for the advice
Uhh it's about the character sheet. There's few questions I'd like to ask
- Even though I've changed my account nickname, the player name is still the old ones in pdf sheet
- I somehow cannot find a Character appearance tabs to fill
- What does additional notes used for?
- Might take time to update. 3. Things to note about your character/campaign/rules
Question
I'm kinda new to DND and was wondering if I could join anyone or just something. Honestly don't know how to really start?
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1089904541140521003/1190627179512483860/IMG_3860.png?ex=65a27cf8&is=659007f8&hm=cb79f09669ee5b55055280a28b3140823f9b8610ebfb019fc25ca2ef3d21a5c6& edit character and goto the description tab and scroll down
If you're looking to join a group to play D&D, please read (carefully) #find-a-game. It has useful info and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels here.
Thank you 👍
Aha thank you
At what level can you subclass
Depends what class you pick
I’m fighter I’m thinking about subclassing into barbarian
1-3
that's multi-classing, and you can do it in any level
np
I'm new to dnd and wanted to try it out
Cool! Welcome, it's super fun 😎

I’m a first time DM (played before) and want to run a game with all brand new players. I’ve heard lost mines of phandelver is good, any recommendations for good one-shots or short campaigns to run for first timers as a new DM?
I've been recommended Peril in Pinebrook, which is a free short campaign
Intro To Stormwreck Isle is a free introduction adventure for level 1 players available on D&D Beyond. Lost Mines of Phandelver used to be free but no longer is
It’s still a good introductory adventure as well, if that is what you are interested in, but you’ll have to purchase it to use it
Thank you
Hello, I'm completely new here.... Hope to be part of this wonderful family of adventures and mysteries....
Welcome!
Hey! I've been trying to get into D&D and found it quite interesting so far but I've never played a game, i only know a few things though. could anyone teach me the basics or just give me a rundown?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

Start with giving the free basic rules a skim through (see link above).
Maybe watch some D&D livestreams/shows to see how others play D&D - get a feel for the core game mechanics recognizing that most shows are entertainment first, not "how to play D&D".
Then try building a character sheet (see first chapters in free basic rules for info on how to do that).
Then find a group and start playing! (read #find-a-game for some helpful info and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels)
Thank you! i have been looking at game live streams and other things to figure out whats going on and i did find that helpful.
Feel free to ask any questions you have as you read through the rules or are creating a character - being specific about your question is helpful. Just asking "how do I make a character?" versus "What does Armor Class mean?" - one can be extremely broad and hard to answer and the other is something everyone can help with and you can get useful info from.
okay thank you!!
Hello (:
can someone go into more depth about the abilities in the character creation. mostly about generation methods? (make it easy to understand I'm a slow learner)
The basic rules describe three way:
-
standard array, which just gives you six numbers for you to assign to the six abilities
-
rolling with dice
-
point buy. You have a set amount of points to distribute amongst your scores, with limits
Do you have a question about them

Further information
yeah i just needed that thank youuu
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Hello I'm Erik and I'm completely new to dnd but I was always fascinated by the concept of dnd so I came here to find people that are willing to help me out and point me in the right direction
that's the right place. free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules, free adventure for game masters: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
there is more then enough free guidance here, forums and youtube and free content for you to start
Thank you for help
of course :)
That specific adventure is no longer available for free, FYI.
oh :(
A few other free adventures, though:
And Spelljammer Academy is free until the end of the month.
(As are The Vecna Dossier, the Flourishing Dice Set, and the Sanguine Dice Set.)
thanks for the freebies
A few other non-adventure ones:

Both are linked above.
so when reading a stat block if it says Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) does that mean I roll 4 d6 and add 1 to each or is it 4 damage base like what
4 is the mean average of 1d6+1
(3.5 is the average for 1d6 but then +1, that's equal to 4)
alright thanks
☝️ You always round down in D&D unless a rule says otherwise.
Can someone explain sorcerers to me?
I've tried reading the stuff on dnd beyond but I don't feel like I have a feel for creating a sorcerer
https://youtu.be/CeIJKkpDvBY?si=2grZqBWr9s6TudnX how to make a sorcerer on dndbeyond
I'll make the original explanation concise: via exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces one may become a sorcerer. Sorcery becomes every part of their body, mind, and spirit.
Do wild magic sorcerers have wild magic surge forever? or just at low levels
Sorcerers are magic. It’s simply a part of who they are. As such, they can manipulate spells in ways that others can’t.
forever. they slightly control it at higher levels.
Thematic:
Given talent at birth through luck, magic, divine intervention, pick your source
Mechanical:
Full caster, limited spell list but has acess to features such as Metamagic to improve spells and Font of Magic to get more spell slots
Wild magic is a feature that triggers under certain circumstances
wild magic seems like such a debuff. I saw a story of someone tpk'ing their party at level one
https://youtu.be/DQ_5eAGdOSo?si=9rF-q34BFyZB2AHz another good video on sorcerers from 2 friendly Canadians the dungeon dudes
Pretty sure it's a gift that keeps giving. Me, I'd never take it. By the rules, it's something that stays with you forever.
Wild magic is a subclass you play only if you are willing to accept the random effects that may occur
I like the idea of a "learning to control your powers" arc
You sign up for the chaos
If you dont want that, dont pick it
fair enough
I like it as well
Perhaps (perhaps!) that could be something to work on with a DM in a longer term game.
That isn’t necessarily something that has to be a mechanical feature
All characters effectively already do that bc they gain abilities as they level up
true
“Learning to control” arc is a STORY beat
It is done through role play
A notable example is Marisha Ray, on Critical role , playing Keyleth
Controlled Chaos is a feature that helps controlling it
She RP’d as naive and uncertain and often made suboptimal mechanical choices in service of role play
It is one avenue
I like that idea
Hey y'all, I'm starting to get into D&D and kinda learning how to play :)
I got into a game through making friends in here, so that's a suggestion too, just takes longer (maybe)
Have you posted your own post in looking for DM?
