do u need to have physical items and pay money to play??
hmmm that does sound interesting ill admit
Nope.
And there are some "beastly" looking races in DnD. To anthropomorphic cats and talking lions from creepy looking bugs and two-legged dragons.
Was not aware of the path of beasts. Sounds cool
ohhh i been looking around and i can see whats happening
the dnds i saw always had characters with abilities being anything the user wanted, heck even i was in one of those types. from my viewing at the character maker it seems like atm i can pick only abilities in the class's set, that sound right?
Yes. And to be a bit pedantic those wouldn't be other DnDs. DnD is one official ruleset, one of many TTRPGs.
(Tabletop roleplaying game)
Being allowed to pick your own abilities is something that your DM has to allow. Making a balanced subclass is very complicated and very few DMs are willing to dip their toes into that territory.
hmmm i see, it makes sense honestly, trying to balance custom abilities that can work sounds like a lot
I’ve been doing it for 37 years and don’t dip my toe into homebrew too much. There are some things that I have minor tweaks from the main rules and then play tested the heck out of it
For example, if you want to make a goblin bard whose specialty is putting people to sleep with calming lullabies you won't have much luck. Unless you're satisfied with just picking the two or three sleep spells that we have by default.
Correct. However I heavily recommend avoiding that channel as a newbie. It will just make your first DnD experience much more complicated for you.
oh i see
yeah im totally a new one here, again the only dungeons and dragons i saw were ones that were simplied on youtube
As Mitcho has said some DMs will always avoid homebrew content. Especially if we're talking about making said content from scratch.
hmmm while this does slightly limit my options quite a bit, i do respect that choice, i aint a picky one myself. if you dont mind me asking are there games like dnd that handle homebrew content easier?
There's no easier way to handle it. Either it's an option or it isn't.
And that is totally up to your DM.
Each class already has a nice selection of subclasses anyway.
It's not as limited as you think.
Can familiars be thrown? I think, that was my question.. I am thinking of making a spider familiar, and having a friend carry him, in case, i want to cast mage armour on them. Makes sense or nah?
hey thats nice to know, again i dont mind the limitations myself
That's kinda up to your DM. Feels like different DMs would handle things differently here.
are there any free websites to play dnd w random ppl on? idrk anyone irl who would like to play dnd w me
Just for barbarians alone you have the typical barbarian, the claws and teeth barbarian (the one I have told you about), the nature spirits barbarian, the magic barbarian, etc...
Check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible D&D games
See #find-a-game for more info on how to use the Looking For Game channels.
that one does sound rather good honestly
And those are just the barbarians (and there are more subclasses that I haven't mentioned). There are still the rogues, the rangers, the paladins, the wizards...
alright i might fiddle around a bit with the main and see whats there, so one more probs silly question, for homebrew can you also make a character on the dnd site
Yes. But I think it's not a great website for implementing homebrew. I haven't used too much homebrew there so I can't answer with certainty.
I do not recommend going down that road but proceed at your own risk.
AH NOTED
so what would be best for homebrew making, not wanting to do one instantly of course, just for later reference
I can't answer that one. Though I can tell you that only the DM ever makes the homebrew. Or at the very least he or she has to approve it.
ohhh i see
And that is if the DM is willing to let you use homebrew in their game.
Heck, a couple of DMs will even ban certain official content. Not a common thing but it still happens.
dang these DMs mean business for their stories it seems, again i dont mind that at all
Anyway now I shall make like a Circle of Dreams druid and 💤
sounds dreamy, have fun lol
hello
-# which is when I cannot help but mention Dreams Druid isn't really about sleeping. More about things that are done while awake or for those that stay awake, but I digress.... 🙂
Thought it was about fey...

Please don't spam the same message across channels (see server rules). But welcome to the server!
Feel free to use #character-discussion to get feedback on your character build
And when you're ready to find a group to play with, check out #find-a-game
ill be real i definetly am not sure if im ready for all this compared to what i expected, but maybe one day ill actually be able to master it all, so for now i might go but i might come back some other time, i do apologize but i wanna say thanks for teaching me about dnd for future reference
there is no expectation to learn everything right off the hop.. even people who have been playing for years will have to reference the rulebook to verify something they haven't used in awhile.
All that most groups ask for is that people bother to learn the basics for play and read over what their character can do
I've been playing and Dm'ing this game for years and I still mess stuff up and forget things - the important thing is to have fun playing a game with others (and helping others have fun too).
Well some of us do DM but best to just ask your question(s) and we can answer them or point you in the right direction
Ah! Well I'd recommend taking a good read of #learn-to-play as it has some helpful information on how to find a group. It also explains how to use the Looking For Game channels here on this server.
But basically you'd find a game posting and message the game poster or use the thread attached to their post to communicate that you're interested in their game.
Alr
They may have a form to fill out or have a voice chat with you to figure out if you're a good fit for their game/campaign.
Got that
It may take a bit before the game actually starts as folks have to get their schedules aligned.
Thanks
Hi all, first timer for the discord
The last dm with saved he would help me get in a game tried to make me spend money
I'd also suggest checking out other places like Roll20, Demiplane, and other D&D servers/forums as often there may be game postings there too,
Alr
Not cool if you specifically indicated you weren't interested in paid games.
Alr
Feel free to report them to Discord for spamming if you feel it crossed that line.
He said he would help me on the field
I trusted his word then he said I would have to pay
Sounds like bait and switch
Yeah
As noted, feel free to report them to Discord if you feel it crossed the line into spamming (unwanted messages) and then block them.
Sorry you've already had to run into that!
I'd check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and see if any of the games/servers there strike your fancy.
I'd say many groups are fine taking on new to D&D folks - particularly if that person is putting in the effort to learn on their own and in-game.
You're welcome and good luck on your D&D game search!
I hope you find a great group to play with! (may take time and a few misses before you get there though)

im finding the hard way that getting a group of people to play with that is fine with my schedule, age , and experience is lowkey tufffff

Hi
Is DnD beyond having a problem with character creation?
(My warlock character creation sheet isn't showing all the eldritch invocations )
It's a recent bug and the devs are aware. For future issues with DDB we have #ddb-support :)
i have no idea how to play d&d whatsoever but it looks fun
I need to vent something about DnD
It’s about new players joining servers
And it’s going on in all of the servers that are listed in #looking-for-dm #looking-for-players #
Players are joining servers but they aren’t active once they join and we need to find a way that new players really want to learn how to play DnD. It’s a great game and there’s a lot of resources available for players but I guess the problem is that they don’t like to read a lot

Hope you find a server to join @pliant pier
hope you do too!
or i do too?

I’m just here helping out new and returning players with questions and answers about DnD
hello im newww

is there a guide to creating a character? i see these dnd character sheets online but have no idea what to write in them
Yes. The free rules have a step by step guide on how to do it. See here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
i also need a bit of help in finding people to play with since no one i know irl is interested
thanks!
There are many places that offer places for people to organize themselves for D&D. This server has its own lfg channels, which you can read about here: #find-a-game
Apart from that, your options are many. I suggest having a look at this guide on finding a group by community member iamrazorwing https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
ill look into that, ty again
You are identifying a problem that isn’t there, if people want to learn/read be active in servers that’s on them, this is a hobby you can’t force people to engage that has to come from them
All we can do is point people to resources and game finding services
Oh it’s there @fresh fable . Every server is having that problem
And it is not forcing anyone to play
Just some are joining servers and that’s it
Allo peeps,nice to meet y'all ^v^)7
And that's fine. There are plenty of reasons to join a server and not engage.

Maybe not rant about it in the #dnd-newcomers channel as the first thing people see is the community saying there is a problem (when there isn’t) an that can be off putting, maybe post in #dnd-discussion
Question: if I’m looking for a game, then I first have to search for more players using the command, and then search for a dm?
You can look through the ads in #looking-for-players and respond in the thread underneath
Or post your own ad in #looking-for-dm

does anyone have any low stimulation dnd youtuber recs for learning game mechs?
omg my tag i forgot to take it off
Please change it before we need to actively moderate it.
yes i did sorry!!
WASD20 has some good videos particularly with how to create a character sheet.
Ginny Di also has some good stuff (more about how to roleplay)
thank you!!!
Does anyone need any help with creating a character sheet
Where can i talk about a mage show? I feel like ppl in this community would appreciate my comments
it would be something like, off-topic? Do we have such a channel?
For a Wizard lvl 2 spell, is Melf's Acid Arrow worth it or am I better off just upcasting Magic Missile?
Probably a better question for #optimization than the newcomer chat
As with most spells, neither is categorically better in every scenario. Both have their upsides and downsides. Acid Arrow can theoretically deal more damage than MM if it hits, and it can crit. But MM is more reliable since it can't miss.
Never played or watched D&D but really want to jump head first into trying it out with some friends this weekend who are also all brand new. Is there any kit or starter thing that’s generally recommended for extreme beginners to simply get accustomed to the basics?
Thanks, hadn't noticed that channel. New here 🙂
Thank you! Checking it out now! 😁

thanks, ill check it out rn
@lyric fjord Well, to keep out simple, there are a list of weapons in the game. Those are all your options by default.
But let's say you pick up a potted plant during combat and told your DM "I wanna hit that guy over the head with this potted plant."
Can you use unconventional stuff like say a necklace to garrot someone.
just dont let it be the sorcerer your picking up-
The rules for that fall under what's called Improvised Weapons. By default, an improvised weapon does the following:
- Deals the weakest damage die available, a 4-sided die
- Has a harder time successfully hitting an opponent (because you don't add a statistic called your Proficiency Bonus to your chance-to-hit)
Now, there are ways to make improvised weapons a little better... but unfortunately not by much. DnD expects you to want to use a sword or bow, or other typical type of weapon.
And I'm sure you'll be a little disappointed to hear this one as well, but there isn't a way to strangle an enemy at all. The rules for enacting suffocation are unfortunately almost entirely exclusive to monsters.

can i also learn by experience?
like actually joining a campaing?
oh wow that is a lot of basic rules
yes
You can, but it's worth warning you: you generally stand a better chance of joining a game if you make some effort at learning on your own. If you jump in without knowing anything, you'll probably slow down the table with your questions, and unless they're explicitly aiming to teach new folks, this might be a point of friction.
You don't have to memorize the entirety of the rules. Knowing how to create a character and how combat works can go a long way; plus, knowing where in the rules to find info as needed will serve you well!
thats a better explanation
good note, so i have some basic knowledge except when we go to details

Communication for the win!
In the meantime, do feel free to ask clarifying questions. Folks here like to help.
Yep, most of the games advertised in the Looking for Game/Group channels here are online.
#looking-for-players is probably the better way to go bc theres a bunch of dms there looking for players. but in the #looking-for-dm channel there would have to be many many more dms than there are currently to answer all the request
tho i don't see a vc?
We don't play games on the server. You find a game to join, and if invited the DM will give you the info for how and when you'll get together.
there would probably have to be several hundred vcs to accommodate all the parties in this discord probably more
Those channels are for finding players/DMs, but the actual gaming happens elsewhere.
i see
not gonna lie i never expected this organization haha, not that it is bad tho!
Perks of being the official server.
Anyone got a good cheat sheet link the offical one appears to have been lost in the migration to the new webpage

Welcome! the bot post above should have lots of helpful information for you
Artificer is in an expansion book (Tashas Cauldron of Everything). So if you don't own that book, you can't select it on DDBeyond.
ok
Put simply, it's not one of the free ones.
If you want to use Artificer on DnD Beyond, then yes.
Alternatively, if your DM has content sharing available, you can borrow their books.
I ain't got a DM i am new and want to try and get in to dnd
Then it might be safer to try one of the free classes before shelling out on Artificer. Artificer is notoriously one of the most complicated classes in the game anyway, so I personally wouldn't recommend it to new players.
thats why its perfect
Or you could play a wizard that casts their spells with little gadgets.
Which is all an artificer really is, they get a few traits and skills but they are the kings/queens of reflavouring
Oh that’s a good one cheers least it doesn’t have the help action mistake like the offical one
If u buy the book u also get cool stuff like subclass options and spells
Some of my favourite things in the game are in that book
Howdy am new
Check out #looking-for-players ! You can't directly post there (though you can reply to threads). If you type /looking in another channel (like this one), you should see bot commands come up and can make your own post if that's something you'd like to do, too!
Unfortunately yes. Artificer is the only class that isn't in the SRD
Unless you want to use the UA play test material for the 2025 revision (I haven't tried it, I hear it's mixed)
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/ua/the-artificer/AzQEA72K8EMf9HmU/UA2024-Artificer.pdf
this is why books are better i think i heard you gotta pay to have all the subclasses too?
You have to pay to own the book, you have to pay to own it digitally. So someone takes your money either way Not paying to have access to paid content is piracy
hey

If I’m looking at getting back into dnd with my friends and I already have the main 3 5e books is it worth getting the new ones even if i want Tasha’s cauldron and monster of the multiverse. How backwards compatible are the expansion books with 2024 rules
3.5 Ed books have zero compatibility with 2014/2024
Hello! It’s going to be my first time DMing for a group of friends who are new to D&D soon and I’m wondering if any more experienced DMs can give me some tips on DMing

Would dnd beyond do those changes for me perchance?

Dm tips
Did you want tips on how to be a DM?
Nah I’m just exploring the server
The rules for creating a character are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Whether those base rules are changed and/or if unofficial homebrew content is allowed depends on the specific DM.
pretty new to this, Do I make a character as level 1 and look for games ? or find a game then make a character based on DM's character making rules ?
I suggest making a character for practice so you understand the process. But I wouldn't count on using any specific character until you have a group.
Did you have a question or need help?
Could Someone Help Me with my character sheet idk if I did it Right?
u can message me the link and i'll look if ya want
Hi there! I'm Teek, new to the community. I'll probably lurk a lot, but I wanted to introduce myself. Paladin is my favorite class, even though I'm terrible at RPing a lawful good character haha. I like getting into silly situations and I am really terrible at math. Luckily I have good friends who help me figure out what the hell I'm doing. I decided to join this discord to hopefully make some new friends and learn some new stuff to be a better player! 😊 ✨
Sure! I'd be happy to help!
Welcome to the server!
Thank you very much!! ^_^
It’s a good thing Paladins aren’t alignment locked to lawful good haha
Glad you enjoy the class! And ditto iamrazorwing, welcome to the server!
Truly?? Hah! Back in college I got kicked out of a game because I couldn't stay lawful good so I just figured.... well, the more you know I guess! And thank you for the warm welcome!
Alignment restrictions used to be in older editions of the game if you were playing something other than 5e
Nowadays Paladin just cares if you follow your oath tenets to a reasonable degree
bro i have a lawful evil paladin they are not at all restricted to LG
sweeet
silver dragonborn revenge paladin
finally finished my character, a chaotic neutral red dragonborn
Sweet, what class?

Sorry for the noob question but I literally couldn't find an answer online:
Do Saving Throw Proficiency affect skill checks?
(ex. having Str. proficiency when initiating a grapple)
Nope, it only affects saving throws.
Alright, thank you :)
Does anyone have any tips for running combat? I'm a new DM and I'm in my second campaign and I feel really REALLY out of my element when it comes to combat, anyone have any tips?
Alright heres how you do it:
First thing you do is ask for the players' name and their initative number that they rolled (Dont roll yet because you'll get confused real quick between your monsters and the players)
Then write them on a piece of paper with big gaps depending on how far apart the numbers are
Once you're done with that then you do the same thing but your monsters (Unless each goon is unique make them all have the same initative number
gimme a sec ill show you an example
welp i cant send photos
so its just
17 player 1
10 player 2
2 player 3
then with the monsters
20 BBEG
17 player 1
15 monster goons
10 player 2
2 player 3
Be careful when using just one monster, like a boss. A group of player can abd likely will overwhelm even a monster lot stronger than them together (this is referred to as action economy)
CR is mainly for measuring difficulty, but not exact math, so don't worry too hard about it.
Ask players to think about what to do on their turn ahead of time (after they are comfortable and familiar with rules, of course) to speed things up a bit during initiative
the seperation of the initative numbers is important so that in any case unpredictability arrives in combat (like new enemies or summons) you could be prepped for it easy
Then by the sides of everything you can add the hp, ac, status what have you
based
yo so im new to D&D ive just started and i dont have anyone to play with what do i do
Check out #find-a-game , it contains instructions for looking for players on the server if it's a group you're looking for
Hi everyone, I’m relatively new to dnd. I have played in a campaign before already but I was only 8 weeks because i joined at the end of it. I know basics, I mainly struggle with knowing the full capabilities of my characters. I have a few made up on dnd beyond. Would love to join someone’s campaign or even have someone teach me so things as well

@opaque siren same
@pulsar granite let’s try and get a game started , how many ppl we need
@opaque siren I don't know it's my first time here
Games can vary lots with the number of people
I suggest a minimum of 3. A dungeon master and two players
The recommended number is 4 players
Hi, if anyone would like to play sometime and doesn’t mind explaining here and there. I’m new to a lot of it.
The Dyno post just above has a bunch of links to help you get started. If you want to jump in, have a look at the Free Rules and pick a class and species.
Okay thank you
hey yall, if yall were to choose a class/classes for a Sun wu kong build. what would you pick?
or just a staff based fighter
Probably a monk! Monks do great with quarterstaffs.
Welcome all of you new players!
thanks'
Hey! I need some help filling out my character sheet. I'm not sure what is applicable to 2024 rules
We can help out! But have you read through the character creation process in the basic rules yet?
No, I haven't. Someone helps me fill out but I want to do it on my own now. When we did it tgt we used 2014 rules though.
ATM i m not really sure about the class features for the warforged species

Well, if you're going to fill this one out yourself, I think familiarizing yourself with the rules is the best place to start! The free basic rules sure linked in the Quick Links above, and have a step by step guide to completing your character sheet.
As for this question... I think you might be a bit confused, or perhaps worded your issue strangely. A class and a species are two different things. Warforged is a species.
Warforged isn't a free species, so you'll have to purchase the book that contains their information.
If you do already have the book, just find the page that details their species traits.
Alr, thanks. Also do ypu have some sort of website or database including more info? I don't have any of the books
quick question, do we need to keep a notepad while playing? theres a lotta information… tbh i dont know how a normal gameplay would look like and i wanna familiarize myself b4 actually joining any sessions
Ohh alr, so i can t make a warforged character
It's not strictly necessary, but it can definitely help, depending on the complexity of the story. Plus, it's usually a good sign for the DM that you're being attentive!
You certainly can keep a notebook or something nearby. Plenty of people find that helpful.
Your character sheet itself has all the statistics you'll need for playing your character during the game, so keep that on hand as well!
And if you've got the time, you can watch other people play DnD online! There's plenty of people who record videos that you can watch on YouTube or twitch.
Not unless you or someone else in your group has the book (or has purchased the content on a website like DnD Beyond), unfortunately.
ahh okay, thanks!!
Alr, thank u a lot^^
Just remember that you don't need to memorize the entirety of the basic rules. Stick to what is important to playing your character specifically. You probably won't need to worry about spells or spellcasting rules at all if you're a Barbarian, for example!
Our usual recommendation for the most important things for a new player to commit to memory are:
- How d20 tests work
- What abilities your character has right now
- What you can do during your turn in combat
im kind of confused with the abilities part
I'm happy to help
i wanna make sure im building my character the right way… how do I know how their abilities scale as they level up? is there a rulebook or guide I could follow
also wanna avoid making them too weak or strong

Absolutely! In the Quick Links section above, you'll find the free basic rules. In there are the individual class options that you can pick as a character. While you're designing your character, you'll pick one class. That class's page details what features they get as they level up, so you just need to follow that list!
sooo much info lol
As for how powerful your character is, one of the main things that dictates this are your Ability Scores. Other RPGs might refer to these as your stats. These are statistics like your Strength and Intelligence and stuff.
gotcha
Different classes care about different Ability Scores, so you'll want to figure out your class first. But afterwards...
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
DnD is a game that doesn't rely too heavily on optimization. As long as you follow the recommended stats for your class, your character should be good.
You'll assign a specific number to each of those abilities. Use the Standard Array method listed above while you're still a new player. That way, the numbers are all fair and balanced.
But that's for after you've selected a species, background, and class.
I'd focus on those three first, while you're still thinking about what kind of character to play.
woopsie
I prefer the 4d6 and drop the lowest d6. You might get better stats
Probably not that useful for a new player who doesn't have a DM yet. DMs don't usually accept rolled stats that they didn't see rolled, after all.
While you're still building your first character sheet, the Standard Array method is tried and true! The number of DMs who don't accept the Standard Array method are exceedingly low.
That’s why I do a session 0 for campaigns so that we can create character sheets together
im looking at the offical character sheet form and theres some sections such as hit dice, hit points etc that I don’t get
Certainly, certainly! But we're not talking about your campaign here at the moment
And I allow it in one shots as well
I’m not talking about my campaign
When I do campaigns
And one shots
Those statistics are all based on what class you pick. You'll fill them in after you pick one
Glad to assist
Hey does the DM decide what the DC is going to be ?
Depends! Some things, like the abilities of monsters that force Saving Throws, have a set DC described in the ability. Other things, like a player trying to throw a key through a window to their ally during a stressful chase sequence, have a DC that is up to the DM to decide.
Ah, that totally makes sense. Thank you!
I am starting a game
Tonight. First time for me and my gf it’s just going to be us two. I’m the DM she is the character (with sidekick) should I roll initiative to see if she or the thing that is attacking goes first ?
When the DM decides combat begins, all the creatures that are/could be involved in the combat roll initiative.
Thank you !
If it helps, the recommended DC to difficultly is:
Easy-10
Medium-15
Hard-20
Very hard-25 (Effectively impossible for low level characters)
Thank you!
Note that easy only means a 50% chance of success if the actor has no bonus, so don't confuse it for trivial, which should require no check.
It will be an interesting experience nonetheless 😆
I have prepped a decent amount. Not so much prepping for the story but mostly just figuring out rules and how the game works
nearly impossible is 30, and very easy is 5
I’ll probably end up making up a lot of things 😆
Not to add on to your plate, but if you're curious about getting more out of one-on-one play, https://dndduet.com/ is all about exactly that type of game! Just a resource to file away.
hey folks, to those who use Roll20 to play, are you using your own physical dice when playing remotely?
I'd love to physically roll and collect dice, although I understand there's built-in dice rolling in VTT's
In my experience people usually use the VTT dice roller since you can get it to calculate everything for you from the character sheet. But it would be possible to roll real dice if the DM allows it
I use the built in dice since it's quick and is attached to skill checks, attacks, saves, etc...
Hello everyone!
alrighty thanks guys....theres.....so many pretty dice though 😄 hahaha I suppose it's going to vary from group to group.
Currently trying to get a basic understanding on the math of how different aspects are calculated too 🙂
You can still collect dice. I know i sure do 😅
Yeah, it'll definitely depend on your individual group. I've done both options in different games before
This is awesome! Thank you for this
Y'know what friend, I believe I will!
Have any good recommendations for some nice affordable die? even some unique ones inpsired by the 'Dwarven style' ?
I get mine from a local game store but there's lots of cool online options. I've seen some cool handmade ones on Etsy before, though I've never bought any so I'm definitely not an expert.
That's a good shout! I'll have a chaotic drive about and check out Etsy 🙂
(5th edition)
Hey folks here for some advice. Encouraging my brother of whom will be a new DM, to run a 2-4 campaign (including him so it'll be a tiny group) with the "essential" box set from the previous edition.
Any advice I can pass forward?(even though the information I've given is perhaps incredibly vague)
-I've suggested he research Sidekicks and DMPCs
Note: I've ran only like 3-4 sessions at around 2hrs each so I have some experience but only minor with IRL DnD.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Appreciated!
This guide is a good intro: https://howtogm.guide/
There's a whole section for DMs in the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
The first handful of videos from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series has a bunch of pragmatic advice: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_ You don't need to watch all 100+ videos! Watch a few, absorb their content, see if you wanna keep going.
Here's a personal tip, just off the cuff: Avoid the DMPC, rely more on the player-controlled sidekick if you're forced to use one.
I tend to go with the advice no one else gives: breathe, drink water, have cough drops on hand
Talking for hours on end can be rough physically
Ginny Di's DMing for beginners video is real good too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCKO6LuXYWE
The pizza is a classic! ...But it doesn't help the vocal cords
Usaly u will be rolling a d20 with proficiency bonus (+2 to +6 based of level) and main stat with some other stuff
And then just reading damage and added damage
Thank you guys for the tips and clips

Ok thanks
whats roll20?
Roll20 is a Virtual Table Top program (VTT). It's one of many programs that can be used by DMs to display battle maps and dice rolls publicly to the whole group.
Other VTTs include the extremely easy to use Owlbear Rodeo, and the high-end Foundry.
is it a website?
Yes, it's accessed via a website.
How much dmg does a fire ball?
8d6 at level 3(the base level for fireball)
and then iirc its +1d6 every level you upcast
so 9d6 for level 4, 10d6 for level 5, etc etc
:O big damage
hello anyone playing game ?
yea its pretty good. be warned tho its aoe so dont cast fireball in a flammable place, itll light everything not being carried on fire
lmao that's mostly want i wanted to do XD, be in a small room and just cast it
“i didnt ask how big the room was. i cast fireball.”

What was the diffrence between the wizzard and sorcerer? one of them learned the spells and the other? or am i wrong
To keep it simple
- Wizards learn their magic by studying it.
- Sorcerers have magic in their blood, so they don't need to study anything

It's with my town friends but I want advice on how to make a good campaign
The folks over in #dm-discussion would be the right ones for that! Though I'll warn you preemptively, it's usually highly recommended for new DMs to run prewritten adventures, rather than homebrew an adventure on their own.
So I just finished my very amateur character builder on the D&D Beyond website... Level 1 🙁 so whats next? I have not subscribed to any stories, how can i level up! 🙂
Please use #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game Channels to find a game
Yea but I don't know were to find those adventures
Can you recommend me one for our first campaign?
You can look through our LFG channels to find a game - see #find-a-game for more information
The one I hear recommended all the time is this one:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
Ok,can I ask some things about the game,it's just that there is a lot off things and I got lost
Yep - feel free to ask questions
1- do the already made adventures have like the type of monsters or enemies that should appear in each zone?(I don't know nothing about them)
2-what could I do if my friends try to do something completely different from the adventure
3-does the towns of the already made adventures have like some type of lore already written?
4-do I need to add something to those adventures like new characters or their personalities or some lore to them or it's all already written
Those are some
- Yes, a prewritten adventure generally has the monsters found in specific areas of the adventure
- Yes you can go off-script from the adventure as you and your group want to (but I'd suggest for new folks to try and stay generally in the bounds of the adventure's story)
- Depends on the adventure but yes, some adventures provide a fair amount of detail and resources for a specific location to help it feel "alive" and provide social interactions.
- Depends on the adventure but generally they have notes and info about NPCs or specific Monsters/Enemies to help you run them
Oh ok,thanks for replying,I can't wait to draw all the maps and stuff
Many adventures even come with maps and art to help with setting the scene for a specific area of the adventure
Nice
But feel free to tweak a pre-written adventure to your needs to ensure you and your group have fun
You don't have to follow it exactly.
then there's some adventures which aren't written so well and you'll have to create stuff to fill in the gaps
Oh and what if I have a player that does some random thing like "I punch the bartender"do I tell him to not do that?do I roleplay it out somehow?
- Set expectations before the game starts on appropriate player and expected character behavior.
- Enforce those expectations to ensure everyone (including you) have fun
- If things start to go wonky, pause the game and discuss it with the group
- Sometimes problem players will need to be removed from the game - it sucks but better to have fun D&D then bad D&D.
Ok
For a new DM and especially for a set of new players, I'd recommend talking with them before you play, and set the tone and expectations of the game. Tell them stuff like:
- "Please don't go punching random NPCs"
- "You can be flexible and inventive with what you do, but please try to stick to the main story/goals"
If you feel a bar fight/negative NPC interaction would be fun for your table... let them punch the barkeep and find out how your imaginary world reacts to it.
But yeah, generally games are more fun when everyone's on the same page trying to tell the adventure's story together.
I know the characters have like a level, like an rpg,how do I know how much experience do they need to level up,and do I have the exp that the monsters drop written somewhere on the manual?
And if they complete a mission,do I know the exp that I have to give them?
The free rules cover this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
Ok
Monsters have an XP score - if the party defeats or avoids said monster, they can earn that XP (divided up among the party).
Or you can use what's called Milestone and level up characters when they get to certain points in the adventure/story.
I generally prefer milestone but the game's I'm in tend to focus on the story arc where that makes more sense than XP
There is so much details,I'm sure we're going to enjoy this game
In the future,if I get better as a DM,I will write an adventure with a kingdom called "redhead kingdom" or something like that(I'm the redhead of the group so it would be a nice inside joke)
And all the habitants would be redhead obviously
Where do I play a game?

are there any campaigns going on right now? that I can join? seems to nothing in lf servers
Did you not see the oh so many game posts in #looking-for-players and even entire servers dedicated to playing D&D and TTRPG games in #looking-for-community?
D&D takes time to set up: you need to have a handful of people be available at the same time and the DM typically has some preparing to do. It's generally not a hobby that lends itself to pick-up games that happen at a moment's notice!
For most players, it tends to take anywhere between a few days to a few weeks from the point where they start their search to the point where they're sitting down to play.
If you want immediate games, you may be better off looking for a local store with drop-in play.
westmarch is probably the easiest and fastest way to get a game, if youre lucky you could find a westmarch server and play a game tomorrow
hello, im new to dnd and i wanted to play for sooo long but i dont really know how to add stats to my characters to play or how to play/participate to events. i have my own ocs (characters) but as i said i dont know how to add them stats. how does it work overall
This chapter of the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character) explains how to make a character, and the previous one explains how to play the game generally. You might also wanna read through #learn-to-play!

I wanna host an Irl game of DnD with my friend who have no Idea what it is... even tho I have read the rules and am very familiar with DnD through online connet, I've never played it myself. So, How should I go around being their first DM? ( and also a dm for the first time )
Grab a prewritten adventure (Peril in Pinebrook is a good intro, https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure), read the DM section in the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics), maybe hold a brief session zero (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game), and have fun!
Hi! First time player here. My character is a cleric and I'm getting a bit overwhelmed looking at all the domain options. What should I look at while choosing one?
Look at what each can do and see if any of the abilities stand out to you!
Sadly I'm too inexperienced to really be able to read all of that and fully comprehend in what way this would be helpful to my party or to me. And I'm seeing some people say that certain domains are a bit tricky to play right. Any recommendations for a first timer?

Hi! My stepdad is hosting my first ever game of dnd for myself and my friends this Sunday. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for ambiance/atmosphere building? My family is always super extra with these sorts of events and we already have a few ideas but i’m really curious what dnd veterans would recommend.:) (Ideas so far; background music, DM has a soundboard lol, candles, 3 separate floors made of stone patterned fabric for different terrains.)

Hello
There is some learn to play things here
I wouldn't recommend making a bard as your first character just because they are a complecated class (the magic system in this game can be very difficult to understand)
Im not saying u shouldn't do it but u might have to do some research before playing them
How active one needs to be to start playing?
Depends on the group. Some play groups will advertise what is called "one shots". These are adventures that can be completed in one session. Others will advertise campaigns or adventures, which often require a larger time investment, often many sessions that may happen regularly (often weekly, biweekly, monthly) over the course of a long time.
And how long a single sitting last?
Also depends. From my experience, 3 hours is very common, but theoretically anything is possible.
It's good to check each individual group for their preferences.
Thank you
Hey Adventurers Im pretty new to DnD with my only experience being the Dungeons and Daddies Podcast (that I am loving!) how do i find a good group or oneshot for a rookie like me?
#find-a-game , or try asking people irl. Either friends or a local gaming store.
is there any tutorials on abput everything in D&D?
#learn-to-play has a little “choose your own adventure” thing to kind of help give you an idea of how the game plays.

@sick vale Alrighty! I can do some more research, I love reading anyways! Can you recommend me a good class to start?
Any class without magic is easier. Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, and Monk. Though in my opinion if you are willing to put in a bit of more effort Bard is totally viable for beginners.
@vital sail thanks for the info! I spent like an hour yesterday looking at Bard gimmicks and whatnot, so I think I have it mostly down pat. But I do wanna try a non-magic class, so thanks for the tips!
I agree that classes without spellcasting have a smaller learning curve, but anything is possible. I would recommend a cleric, though, because you’re not locked into your spell choices, and they can do a little bit of everything (as opposed to the support playstyle of the bard, which can be tricky to understand). Long way of saying there’s no single route that will work for everyone!
Take a look at the Dyno post just above for the free rules.
You guys have been so helpful! I’ll start with a Bard, since I really enjoy the supporter playstyle, and I’ll go onto a Rogue or Barbarian or something. Thanks again!
There's no single answer to that question. It would depend on the theme/type of campaign and the makeup of the rest of the party
it is simply what you would prefer
Ok, if im going to dip 2 into Hexblade, should i take Clockwork soul or Shadow?
It still depends on the other factors. If you want people to go into the math of it, I'd try #optimization or #character-discussion
I am playing a grung ranger (Fey Sublcass), we are starting level 5
Does extra Attack mean i get to shoot arrows twice? or is that melee only?
Potentially yes - but do note that some weapons have a loading property... so read up on that 😉
its just a long bow i dont see anything in the DDB character sheet that says reloading
Oh sorry - ammunition property
Actually loading and ammunition
In the case of the longbow you're good as "Drawing the ammunition is part of the attack (you need a free hand to load a one-handed weapon)"
i'm still a bit new, are there channels to show off our character designs?
Rules as stated says that long bow doesn’t have a loading property that uses up an action or bonus action which makes it
perfect for extra attacks

Take a look at the links above, maybe put together a first level character for a bit of practice.
alright will do, ty
so for dreadful strike for a fey-wandering ranger ```3rd-level Fey Wanderer feature
You can augment your weapon strikes with mind-scarring magic, drawn from the gloomy hollows of the Feywild. When you hit a creature with a weapon, you can deal an extra 1d4 psychic damage to the target, which can take this extra damage only once per turn.
The extra damage increases to 1d6 when you reach 11th level in this class.```
is this a 1d4 for every single round/turn in a fight? am i reading this right?
Yes once per turn you can inflict an extra 1d4 psychic damage on the target creature - but said target only can take this damage once per turn (so if someone else had the same feature, their extra damage would have no effect).
Well hold on. If you target more than one creature, you get this bonus twice. A creature can only take the damage once per turn, but you can use however often you'd like.
Yeah it's an interesting way of saying a target can only take the damage once per turn but that the damage could apply to multiple targets on a turn.
so bear with me here
if i playing a grung ranger at level 5
grung poison coat a piercing weapon before a fight (which a bow is piercing) 2d4
Hail of thorns as a BA for 1d10
long bow for 1d8+3
psychic damage for 1d4
assuming that all hits, the first shot is 2d4+1d10+1d8+3+1d4 for 8-33?
and thats just 1 attack with the second being a normal bow shot
yes
Folks in #optimization focus a lot on builds that produce the most damage per round and other optimization chatter if you're interested in that kind of thing.
can someone help me fill out my character sheet this is all so confusing
What part is tripping you up?
If you have specific questions on it, it makes it easier for more people to help in here. One on one type help is not that common.
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
Have you been following the step-by-step instructions in chapter two of the Basic Rules?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
i have not
Alright, did you pick a class and species?
Creating a Character in the basic rules is invaluable, even if just to know what to do next and to get linked to something that would go there. The free rules may not have everything but enough to get you through a sheet.
are there rules for how long something is poisoned if that condidion is applied to an opject like a sword or an arrow or something?
yeah i wanna be a college of sword bard ( i was dicussiing it with someone else)
Is there a region or continent anywhere on Toril that closely resembles Australia? I have a player whose character is basically Gnome Steve Irwin and I’m trying to figure out where he would actually be from
Been browsing the forgotten realms wiki for a while and I guess the continent Osse is supposed
to be sorta Australian, but its also supposed to be mysterious and not well known, so would it make sense to have a PC be from there?
Yes, that's fine.
Okay, a bard. I always recommend using the Standard Array for your starting ability scores. You get 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to distribute. Bards use Charisma for their spellcasting and many skills, and like a high Dexterity as they don't usually use heavy armour.
?tag new bard
Bard
Perform spells that inspire and heal allies or beguile foes
Invoking magic through music, dance, and verse, Bards are expert at inspiring others, soothing hurts, disheartening foes, and creating illusions. Bards believe the multiverse was spoken into existence and that remnants of its Words of Creation still resound and glimmer on every plane of existence. Bardic magic attempts to harness those words, which transcend any language.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 8
Dex. 14
Con. 12
Int. 13
Wis. 10
Cha. 15
Likes: Performing
Complexity: High
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
There’s a suggested standard array assignment there for bard. ☝️
i switched con and str around is that fine?
since i woud be fighting more as a bard imo
I always keep Con. in my top three.
why what does it do
Increases your max HP, for one.
And as a spellcaster, it will help you maintain concentration on spells.
As far as fighting goes, a high Dex can help compensate for a low Str. You’d just want to focus on finesse weapons (like rapiers) and ranged ones (like longbows).
my character will use a sword tho not a rapier
A rapier is a sword.
If you did want to trade for a higher Str, though, I’d swap Int or Wis.
"sword" is a category of weapons, not a specific one. The following weapons are all considered to be swords:
- Shortswords
- Scimitars
- Longswords
- Rapiers
- Greatswords
a short sword then
Scimitars, too.
Knew I was forgetting something
so i made like a character on the dnd beyond website can yall look and see if its okay
Shortswords are also finesse weapons, though, so you could use Dex instead of Str.
They just don’t do as much damage as a rapier.
But they are light weapons if you wanted to double up.
I’d swap Int and Con. That’ll keep your Int at a +1 but bump your Con to +2.
I’d swap Str and Dex, too.
You’ll get better use from your shortsword and a better AC.
I'm a little confused, because it looks like you're using all 2024 content, but you have the 2014 species bonuses to your ability scores, and you seem to be missing a background
idk im just using this website ppl told me to use
They probably didn’t choose a 2024 background.
oh yeah custom background idk wtf im doing as u can see
In which case there’s a fallback for when neither species or background has it.
It’s fine.
how do i celect college of sword bard in this
You’ll pick your subclass at level 3.
D&D Beyond is definitely a good website to use, but it doesn't have all the guiderails you might expect. Just because you can do something on the website doesn't automatically mean its a legal part of character creation. You have to know what is or is not allowed by reading the rules and limit yourself as you pick certain options.
Anyway, if you’re using True Strike, I’d do CHA, CON, and DEX as your highest scores, in that order.
And for your species bonuses, add +1 CHA and +2 CON.
That’ll start you with a +3 each in CHA and CON.
And when you attack with True Strike, you’d use that +3 CHA.
ok i think i did that can u recheck or do i need to resend the link
we see the updates, you don't have to repost the link
ok
Not quite what I suggested, but you’re not obligated to follow that suggestion.
At the very least, I’d move the elf’s +1 INT to CHA.
It’s not doing anything for you on INT.
Bumping an even score to odd is generally fruitless.
Bumping an odd score to even is where you come out ahead.
ok all done
The type of poison determines how long it lasts.
Excerpts from the DMG below on Poison. I stuck to Injury poison that would get applied with a weapon but there are other types such as poison that is ingested.
[example of one that lasts] A creature subjected to Lolth’s Sting must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or have the Poisoned condition for 1 hour. ...
[Example of one that is 1 time and done] A creature subjected to Purple Worm Poison makes a DC 21 Constitution saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) Poison damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
heyyy sup
I joined this server to meet people who play D&D. The group I played with for about 6 years kind of just fell apart and I don't exactly know how to talk to people well, but am looking for a group to play with over discord
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
I want a second opinion for how I'm choosing to do spell damage rolls in my game
For actual "Spell Attacks" I let my players roll for damage. (e.g. Scorching Ray) For non-attacking but damaging spells, I'm rolling damage. (e.g. Burning Hands)
This makes sense to me, since spells that require saving throws aren't actually classified as "Spell Attacks". Its more like you just create fire in front of you, and if an enemy just so happens to be there, then the fire deals damage to them, not the player.
I still give the players some information by describing how the enemy is looking after they got hit, I just don't tell them the specific numbers. Helps prevent meta-gaming imo, leaves things up in the air a little bit.
Good DM? Bad DM? Thoughts? Is there anything in RAW that says its better to do it one way or the other?
So there's three different types of rolls here.
Attack rolls, saving throws, and damage rolls.
When a spell like Scorching Ray says this, it's an attack roll:
Make a ranged spell attack for each ray.
The player would roll a d20, add their spell attack modifier, and then you compare their total to the target's AC.
If their total equals or exceeds the target's AC, that's a hit. Anything less is a miss.
When a spell like Burning Hands says this, it's a saving throw:
Each creature in a 15-foot Cone makes a Dexterity saving throw
That's when you, the DM, would roll for that target.
Again, it's a d20, and you'd add whatever bonus the statblock shows for Dex saves.
This time you compare the total to the player's spell save DC.
Again, if it equals or exceeds, that's a success. Anything less is a failure.
When spell says the target takes damage, it's typically the player who makes damage roll.
So in Scorching Ray's case, the player would roll 2d6.
On a hit, the target takes 2d6 Fire damage.
In Burning Hand's case, the player would roll 3d6.
taking 3d6 Fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
And in this case, if the target succeeded on their save, you'd cut whatever damage the player rolls in half.
And yeah, once the damage has been applied, most DMs don't share the target's exact remaining health.
Yes that's exactly the question here, isn't it. I don't see anything in RAW that says it must go one way or the other. This way makes more sense to me. My thought process is:
"If a Damage Roll must be made as a the result of an Attack Roll, the creature who made the Attack Roll also makes the Damage Roll. If a Damage Roll must be made and it is NOT the result of an Attack Roll, the creature taking the damage makes the damage roll."
I'm consistent with this too, like I let my players roll for their own fall damage for example.
I don't think that's wrong, but it is atypical.
As long as your consistent, though, it shouldn't be a problem.
However, consistency in this case would mean that when a monster forces a player to make a saving throw, the player would then roll that damage as well.
Yes
Then yeah, shouldn't cause any issues, even if its not how most tables do it.
I'm just wondering about the part where you won't tell the players how much damage they did, and what kind of metagaming you're hoping to prevent doing that
Like, tossing a fire bolt you'd know how much damage you did, but not if you create a cone of fire with burning hands for some reason
Also there might be a slight chance for misunderstanding. If you describe a spell not doing much because you rolled low for the damage, it might give the players the idea that the target is resistant to the damage
(Also rolling a bunch of dice for strong aoe spells is one of the satisfying parts as a player so would be missing out on those lol)
hello everyone 🙂
Aloha, all!
Are you required to have backstories because im like embarrassingly bad at creating them
Depends on the DM
Most would at least require like where yer from and why you started adventuring as (insert class here) just to get an understanding of the character. Beyond that is hugely variant on DMs. I have an experienced player worn many a backstory currently playing an adventurer who is barely old enough to go out and his family life was boringly normal, so he’s creating his story by going on these adventures
The way Ive helped players in the past with backstory stuff is the two question approach:
- What started you adventuring? This can be anything from I answered a wanted poster on a tavern board to i was forced to fight goblins in my farming village. Could be you are getting blackmailed into doing it, or you heard you get rich quick and you got some debts to pay. Honestly even funny reasons like "well I married a woman and turns out I cant start a family till I go on 100 quests" work out.
- Who is the most important person to you? Could be young crush, your mom, your sibling, the town mayor who inspired you. If you cant decide put a bunch of these in a hit and draw one and then boom thats the most important person to you.
From these two questions you can come up with any kind of backstory. I adventure cause my mom has dragonpox and I am hoping to find a cure for her and enough money we can retire together. That right there is a complete backstory that can be slid into any world and gives you character a connection and a reason to be out there.
I’m somewhat new to dnd, I have over 100 characters on dnd beyond just waiting to be played. Any tips/pointers for me?
If you have 100 characters, you clearly got the rules to make them down. Seems like you just need to play. If you have game stores nearby see if they have Adventure League. If not then maybe see if people on here are looking for playersi n their group.
I’m currently in a campaign at my local game store, they usually play once a weekend. I’m a fanatic when it comes to DnD, so I’d like to play more often, I have horrible social anxiety as well so I wanted to try and see if online DnD could help me with it
It took me a while to even show up to a few games at my local store
I coached my kid through similar anxiety and remember the first time they played. Honestly my number one tip for new players it to remember this isnt a video game. You dont have to be good at everything or cover every base. Your job is to be part of the party, so its better to work on being a good team member than anything else.
That’s what I’ve come to learn, DnD has really helped me out of my shell and I’ve met some fantastic people through it, just hoping to expand on that within this server
Dont be disheartened if it takes you a minute to get into a group. The ratio of players to dms is staggering. Plus some people play older editions exclusively and so you may have to choose between learning a different rule set or waiting for a different group.
just think of it as a story that you are part of
I’ve barely played the 2014 and 2024 rules, I’ve been with my local store almost a year now and I still have no clue what im doing most of the time
I mainly just make a character, go into great detail then let the dm do the rest
And I kind of just tagalong
I am returning to D&D after about 20 years. I am disabled and don't leave my house unless it's to go to the doctor. That said, a couple of questions. First, what is getting me back into D&D is my buddy stopped playing and gave me a copy of his 2014 PHB and DMG. Is there a way to incorporate these books into D&D Beyond without paying for them, considering I already own them. Finally, I was wondering is the 2014 rules are still viable considering 2024 changed them, a lot from what I hear. Thanks in advance
Does anyone know of any online campaigns for beginners? I’ve never played and there’s no game store near me.

To answer your first question: no. In order to have the digital versions on DDB you have to purchase them on DDB. I own everything for the 2014 ruleset already, and I'll also have to eventually repurchase them on DDB.
To your second question: yes, they are still viable. The one caveat is that, if you get into a game, you will need to make sure that the game is using those rules. It's really the same as any other game using older editions.
That's what I thought but wanted to be sure, thank you
No problem! I know it sucks - I really don't want to have to drop more money on them either - but it is what it is.
I'm Convinced finding a game at this point is impossible. i have a small list of needs for a campaign but they honestly might be my downfall. Like I'm a new player, but i don't even know if i can call myself a player cause i haven't even played the game 😭
its either " not old enough" or "schedule doesn't fit".
like bro i cant play at 2:00 pm on a tuesday
The dnd scene here is pretty stiff huh
finding a group honestly is the longest part.. mostly because there are far greater numbers of players than there are DMs and then you add the complexity of timezones and work schedules. But patience pays off
Ill be sure to keep that in mind
twin
I'm in the same boat. The only way I can play is PBP, and there aren't enough of those even being advertised on the forums right now.
somebody messaged talking about " the great DM crisis" we might be cooked
There's been more people wanting to play than people wanting to DM for a long time
It takes time and effort to find a game, and often even more to find a group you actually mesh with
As folks have said here before, the fastest way to play a D&D game is to run it yourself 😅
I believe it is possible to homebrew everything from the books onto D&D Beyond for your own use at no cost, but it's a lot of work for anything that's not included in the free rules
The newbie DM attempt might come sooner than i thought
And I will be running something...soon.™️
There are a number of sites that specialize in PBP.
And my experience with those sites is not the best. The largest site you have to track down players constantly, and the other is a community of people who have less than admirable personalities. Which is why I'm trying DDB and it's Discord.

lf someone to talk to about magic lore. I'm not a member of a party, but I just want to know how magic works in the D&D World. DM or message me here.
You can find a couple of free one shots on DnD beyond (though I think a few of them were limited time claims) and a ton of PreGens. (Some PreGens were made for certain campaigns but none are restricted)
Ok
Magic in DnD is very soft and general, so you don't need to worry about understanding how it works
Basically "Magical people can do cool things that manipulate the fabric of reality"
The source of magic does differ between classes.
But even then each can be described in a sentence
I know one good, pretty simple one-shot but without pre-gen characters
But what about regular people whom found themselves homeless and suddenly found a god and were granted magic? How does that work?
There are really no specifics to how it works. Different settings can have more in depth lore about magic, but I am no lore expert
That’s what I’m curious about. I’ve only played BG3 and wondered about people that didn’t believe in a certain god or lost faith, but followed another because their prayers were answered. How does that work? If they weren’t born with magic, but prayed and were granted powers, how does that work?
Will they be claimed in the city of judgement? Will their kids inherit their magic?
DnD lore is designed to be vague and general, as there is no official world or lore.
BG3 takes place in the world of Faerun (aka Forgotten Realms), you would be better off asking in #dnd-lore
My mind goes nuts if there is no true answer. I need to know. But if it’s vague, then now I know that there’s no real answer.
Ah! Okay. Thank you!
No problem
does anyone know how to get a post out in #looking-for-players using the bot? 🙏
#find-a-game explains - it involves a command
thank you 🙏
"If you can't find a DM then maybe you're the DM!"
Time for me to step up man
Someone hit me up so we can talk before I go to bed.
You're also welcome to post your query here. More people means more answers.
Finding a pokemon campaign to join is so hard
There are a few Pokemon homebrews out there, but yeah I expect it to not be super popular. It's difficult to adapt Pokemon powers and mechanics to 5e.
You might enjoy playing a normal 5e campaign with a character that has a "pet" option like:
- Beastmaster Ranger
- Drakewarden Ranger
- Anyone with the Find Familiar spell
Also Battlesmith Artificer, and Wildfire Druid
Should i just read PHB instead of starter set rulebook for a better understanding?
the phb adds more options to build characters (subclasses, feats, backgrounds, species) but its the same rules
Yeah unless i missed something i couldn't find the character building rules
The idea behind the starter set rulebook is to give you the bare minimum you need to know to run the module it came with. For simplicity's sake, to help you get playing as fast as possible. It's enough, but it omits quite a bit. (Like character building, like you noticed. It's why it comes with premade characters.)
2014 basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
2024 "remaster" basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
you can also take a look at these if a digital format is easier for you
If you’re willing to pay to play, there are many Pokemon homebrews on Start.Playing
I will thanks, i can't buy physicals anyways, they are not shipped to here lol
I think the kit i have also uses 2014 are there a lot differences from 2024?
Yes and no. There are a handfull of system rule changes, but most of the changes are in specific features and classes.
It's different but it's not unrecognizable
its possible to use 2024 rules for a 2014 module but I wouldnt recommend it for a beginner
YouTube is also a really good resource for learning to play, even without a rulebook handy.
So not much is different from the eyes of someone trying to learn the ruleset
I wouldn't say so, no.
I will say at the very least the 2024 rules are easier to parse. (Most of it) Is worded better or more clearly
Certainly more beginner friendly, for sure
It's also organized a hell of a lot better. The glossary in the back is a terrific addition

Hey folks something I always struggle to understand, especially after taking a long break from playing.
Simple question for character sheets.
You have your stats e.g. strength 20 (5+), proficiency athletics.
If you're called upon to make a strength (athletics) check.
Do you get a +7 from your characteristic and your proficiency. Or just one or the other?
you add the modifier of the stat and your proficiency bonus together
At the earliest levels you get to add +2 to any skills you're proficient with. If you were proficient in Athletics and your Strength score modifier was +5, you'd have a +7 on Athletics checks.
Hi, I'm new to all this world, I've tried watching videos about, but from a way or other i get lost, i wanna learn about it, all help is much appreciated, thanks

All u really need to know before you start is the basic terms, how at least 1 class works and how to make a character
hi
Question for 5e.
I have in my mind that when you're creating a character and levelling up, (I can't find this bit but it could be a false memory) that the first few times you level up you max out your hit dice?
Or am I simply just mistaken and you roll for it each time (or instead use the average outcome as mentioned per the book)
One message removed from a suspended account.
One message removed from a suspended account.
In regard to book keeping?
One message removed from a suspended account.
You roll or take the average, except for the first level.
First level you take max.
Every time after that it’s either roll or average.
Appreciated guys for the clarification.
Probably a very often asked question, but where do you find DND groups? I've been trying to find one for a couple of years now and I've looked in person and online but the groups are either 18+ or not in my timezone. If anyone has any recommendations pls let me know, I'd be forever grateful lmao
Keep in mind they dont need to be in your time zone, just being played at the time that works for you!
Also making your own game as the DM is an option. It can feel scary but it's not nearly as difficult as people can make it seem, and you're basically guaranteed to get a group, some of whom might want to try their hands at DMing eventually
This server has #find-a-game for instructions on using the LFG channels
I'd totally try my hand at being a DM but I'm not sure how good at it I'd be, especially cause I've never had the opportunity to play before, are there any resources/websites you'd recommend??
Check the pinned messages here in this channel for useful resources
Thank you!!

Unhelpful but true
Don't try to be the best. Don't try to "win". Make sure your goal as a dm is that both you and the players have fun

What did you come up with?
A tiefling monk with a drum kit
I'm new to this but I thought that would be cool
I've got his background and everything
Cool. What does their martial arts style look like?
You remember when I said I got the back ground done
I forgot about that 😅
I could send my character sheet
Lemme see...
If you could sum up their backstory in three sentences, what would it be?
Good advice here 🙂 Last night in a game my Wizard locked down a horde of orcs using Web, which was recommended to me here. The Light Cleric enjoyed the burning effect, as well.
He got kicked out of his temple cos he discovered a secret underbelly and now wanders the world, seeking his own truth
Why did they go to the temple to start with?
He lived in a village that was very religious. ( idk how correct that is with actual tiefling lore... like do they live in villages or what) he got brought up that way
Basically brought up religious. Felt disillusioned with the temple and their way of doing things
And now he's a monk that travels with his drum
Religious and punchy, though. That's a particular kind of faith.
He's still very religious tho. Just wants it to be individual and pure to one's path
He don't like the kumbayah angle
Oh damn I forgot to tell you the name
Moshe Mammon
So what deity or faith do they follow? Do they have any particular rituals or practices?
I've left it vague (cos idk which deities there are)
This might give you some ideas, but you should feel free to detail how your character practices and displays their beliefs.

Oh wait I cannot post a picture. So I am referring to creating a custom background. I can choose to add proficiency or language and I see tangible benefits there. What ab background feature and background characteristics?
Im still new but proficiency seems better bc i think it helps your rolls
They don’t, they’re meant to be roleplay and flavour stuff
Ok. I’m reading some say they add and some are simply for role play. I’m using dnd beyond and I don’t wanna mess w my character by selecting them. But if they make me stronger I wanna try them out
im creating a cahracter and I dont have to put too many hit points but I dont know if 6 is too little. is there anyway i should decide this?
Your hit points are based on your class + your Constitution modifier.
What's your class and constitution modifier? And what's your level?
level 1 im brand new and i think my constitution modifier is 0 but im not sure
And your class?
sorcerer
Then your hp is 6
Then yes, your HP is 6+Con Modifier
okay ty
Sorcerer's hit die is 6, and your Constitution modifier is 0, so you have 6+0=6 hp.
is there anyway i can increase hp or no?
Increase your constitution.
Whenever you level up, this increases by 4 hp
Increasing your Con is the best way to do that
ah i see. and when i level up my constitution modifier changes?
The tough feat, sources of temporary hp, and certain features and spells which increase your max up also uelp
No, only at certain levels do you get the opportunity to increase your constitution.
No, unless you get some feat which increases you Constitution to an equal number
That's why it's important to begin by making sure you start with at least a 12 or 14 Constitution score.
Having high Con is important for every class, indeed
It also helps with Constitution saving throws, which you'll be making a lot as a spellcaster who needs to maintain concentration on spells
ok i just changed it so that i have a +1 modifier on con so I have 7 hp now
thanks for all the help guys
Overcoming speeches with logic and facts but only if the state is fisically high
Intelligence is good for a few skills such as History or Investigation, as well as being the primary spellcasting stat for Wizards/.
That too
Is 17 high
YES A LOT
Cos uhm my monk has 17 INT
Technically the max is 18
Did I mess up
I wouldn't recommend putting your intelligence that high as a monk. It won't be too helpful for you.
?tag new monk
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 10
Wis. 14
Cha. 8
Likes: Unarmed combat
Complexity: High
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
Mmmm if I'm not wrong you should pump up str and dex for the monk
I got a monk build that is more scholarly and into history.
Above are the recommended stats for a monk
Btw I rolled the stats
Do you happen to have a DM yet?
And then allocated the different abilities
Nope not at all
Then your rolled stats might not be that useful.
Oh
DMs rarely accept rolled stats that they didn't see rolled themselves
Otherwise you may have been cheating.
Fairs that makes sense
In any case. I've got my character. Just need to tweak the technicals

I would recommend using the Standard Array list above, until you find a DM.
Sounds like fun
Yeah ma bois got a drum
where do I find the channel for making a party? I'm trying to find one or two more people so we can do dnd

tyy :3
I just made my first character
Dnd needs another discord for solely recruiting
Thankfully, they have 4 entire channels for it.
And I’m sure there’s lfg Discords out there.
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Hey I'm tryna find W group too play with is any won available?
i’ve been watching YouTube videos specifically that guy videos with Warhammer DND and holy I hope I can find a normal group too play with
Warhammer is different to DnD
I know, but from what I’m seeing the crash outs can be similar
is human fighters still viable?
Yes
Everything is viable. What matters is that you play what you enjoy.
Me: I love playing rangers.
The last campaign I did forever ago with a group of friends I was a giant monk and that was a blast
A giant... monk.... that sounds BRILLIANT
Hey I’m rlly new to dnd but I have a character and if someone could give me a beginner campaign/help explain things to me that would be great
Are you familiar with the basic rules of DnD? And do you have a concept for a character or a completed character sheet

Yeah I know all the basic rules, and a completed character sheet
In that case follow the above instructions to find groups online via discord
Oh thanks!
What's a spellcasting modifier?
Either Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, depending on your class. It is added to you spellcasting rolls and your spell save DC
Helps with making them hit or damage?
Helps with attack rolls, it’s not added to damage dice
a spell will specify if the modifier is added to damage
Hey, I'm a bit younger than all of you but im wondering if i can join a campaign?
thank you
Hullo
👋
Evening y’all
Evening
If ya have questions ask away
I'm afraid 'm going to be pestering you all night 😭
Anyway, is a ranger a good first character for a new dnd player? I've always loved bows and archers so im wondering if that love and knowledge will and can be usefull in a campaign
Also what does meta/ no meta mean (i know in no meta i think you can have bagmen that snatch you or smth😭 )
Body snatchers?
Ranger in my opinion is good starter class. Not the easiest but not the hardest but since they dabble a little in the magic world and a bunch in fighting, it’s a great way to feel what u like best out if u like that mix
How beginner friendly is a monk class
Meta is a newer term for player vs character info
Monk is very beginner friendly in my opinion
Yayyyy
Player information is things you as the player know but your character in the game may not know. So if u meta game that means u use this info to your characters advantage which in all technicality makes no sense to do so
Character info is stuff your character actually knows and is what they should actually act upon
5e question.
To check when you're making a player character. Things like Wood Elf race, give you a +2 to dexterity.
Is it the modifier it increases or the characteristic.
E.g. if I rolled a 15 it'd become a 17 (3+).
Or rolled a 15 (+2 with+2 from elf race)
15 becomes 17
Wouldn't it be +2 then?
Thought so as I decided to compile my character onto DnD beyond but it turns it into a +5.
So the 15 gave u +2 the now 17 gives you +3
Thanks for the feedback
Yw
Would it be too put of bounds to show my character sheet? Only the ability section cos I'm a bit confused 😕
Is there a chat here to look for a part, I'm really itching to get started
That ain’t right unless you are looking at dexterity saving throw and playing a class that has u proficient in dexterity saves like a rogue
U can share the link to yer character sheet from D&D beyond, just make sure it’s set to public
Dunno follow the easy instructions in #find-a-game to find a group or post what yer looking for
DM you
Lord of roses did that make sense
Hello
Looks like it’s not set to public on the settings page
I’d make Dex, Wis, and Con my highest scores, in that order.
I’d recommend changing your Thaumaturgy spell from Magic Initiate for something else as well.
Since you’re already getting that spell from your species as well.
I would say the same things as tuna
How do I change that
I'm so lost
Either go back to where you chose it the first time (as part of your background, I assume)…
Or go to Features & Traits and click on Magic Initiate at the bottom. Then you should be able to change it in the sidebar.
What do I change it to
I've chosen sage as my bg (changed it from acolyte)
Did nothing for the magic thjngy
