For soulknife sub class do I have to attack with the psionic blade for the bonus action to attack with another psionic blade or can you attack with a non-psionic blade and then use bonus action to attack with a psionic blade
The way it is written, the attack action or opportunity attack... this means ANY attack action..." Attack action, you can make one attack roll with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike."
Hey, quick question, is there an objective class(s) that you should try and pick if it's your first character and you're get into D&D?
Nope
so that means, if it attack with a rapier, i can bonus action and attack with my psionic blade?
Pick what seems fun and works well with your DM's game/setting.
yuppers
Are there things to avoid? Like multiclassing and such?
many will say newbies should start with the low to no magic users (fighter, rogue, barbarian) All great classes, and for a player who isnt willing to read a little about their character and its rules, they are great. If u are willing to read about what y er playing, then any of them a great, just pick what calls to u
Ohhhhhhhhhh, interesting
I wouldnt suggest multiclassing (ever for anyone in my personal opinion) for a newbie. playe a campaign or 2 before branching into the deep rooted ideas
Figured, that's probably a little harder
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
If you are looking for something easier, the above helps pick things that are less complex.
it is. and again MY opinion, never works out to be a better route.
(and as a note that complexity message is what the game designers think but may not actually reflect what you think - it's okay to have a differing opinion on it)
I want to have the list of the things we can get DYNO to send like that
I've been helping for a few months now and I still dont know how to do that lol
I wish we had the time to update our FAQ section with all our community commands/tags.
It's on our list but it's a matter of time right now.
The moderators were nice enough to show me the other day and I really appreciated it.
thanks
Is there a way to be able to play free
the basic rules are free to use but, of course, do not contain all the races, subclasses, feats and etc.. but it is enough to play games
And how do I play by my self on dnd beyond
I would not recommend solo play as it is meant to be a social game. Not having at least a DM to guide you through the story makes it hard
I don’t have any friends that play
Or want to
Check #looking-for-players for DMs that need playesr for their games
Or even #looking-for-community that are looking for both players and DMs for tehir community D&D games
How do I post something in it
You don't need to post anything - just direct message the game poster
Or you can post that you're interested in a game in the thread attached to the game post (the little area underneath the game posting)

OLD player coming back in after wandering around with pathfinder after the 4 e thing.
So a Level 1 druid I have four prepared spells but 2 spell slots. So I have say, Cure wounds , thunderclap, Goodberry , and farie fire. I also have speak with critters memorized because druid.
I have 2 spell slots, that I can use to cast any combination of those spells. 1 cure 1 goodberry, 2 thunderclaps, etc. Right?
Yeah that sounds right to me
Correct, you can cast the spells in any way you want aslong as you have the spell slots for them
You will also have 2 cantrips, which have no casting limit
And are druids considered spontaneous, memorized, or do all casters work like this?
When you say spontaneous, I assume you mean like instant spell casting?
I mean like 3.5 sorcerers
If I'm understanding correctly. You can only cast the spells you have prepared as a druid
Lets try this a different way. Do wizards, clerics, and bards all cast the same way, preparing x spells and then having Y spell slots?
Correct
Excelent! thank you.
Yeah, in 5.x all casters are "spontaneous."
Gone are the days of Vancian "cast and forget" spellwork.
They may be gone now but mark my words they'll be back! .. Judith where did we park the car.... 🙂
You'll need to take a long rest before you can remember where it is 😂
What’s up dudes
Thank you so much!!
I am a complete newbie to dnd but I would like to learn if anyone is willing to help a newly out thanks I greatly appreciate it

Hi, I’m new to this server and I have like a couple questions Like how would you find out more details about what kind of campaigns people have posted? do you have to message the DMs about it or can you ask through the threads? And for finding campaigns you want to join do you have to like put your preferences and play styles somewhere or is this server Jsut like a hub for people to find others and to communicate with each other through dms? I know these aren’t really like dnd-newcomer related questions but they kinda are this dnd server newcomer questions so imma ask them here.
You can ask in the threads
Unless the post says to do something else
And you can post in #looking-for-players with your preferences but personally I think it's better to be proactive about finding games that interest you
I’m Jsut asking here cuz the threads Jsut say who started it with no details about campaigns or anything (might be problem on my end or Jsut no new campaigns idk)
Cuz like I’m looking through the responses and ppl are like “this is a great idea can I join?” And I’m like where can I find what in the world they’re talking about TT
Hey guys i'm a DM and need help with my campaign. I've only been DM for a while now, i'm ten session plus in but as I continue new players joined who have far more experience then me and are abusing it to make combat encounters that I scheme up childs play to them . So I wanted to know how some mechanics work. How does the rogue combat work? I have one rogue who hide in combat then shoot his arrow then move to other area and hide again. His dexterity his high obviously since he a rogue but how do I combat this for more challenging encounters?
???
Rogues can hide as a bonus action so they can afford to fight like that. In any case a good DM needs to be firm and know when to say no so if you feel like your players are abusing your trust or kindness know that you have the right to set your foot down.
If you feel like you need to get better acquainted with the basic rules I suggest taking a look at these.

What's the best way to find a party for new comers?
Online or in person?
Here's a good unofficial guide to finding groups (credit to iamrazorwing):
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
Online
Online i would suggest the channel Find a Game: # lfg-instruction-faq but make sure you have a player already made and have someone knowledge of the rules. But if you don't that could work in your favor too. Just be yourself and honest how you looking for people to play with your role and your experience with the game and what time and day you can play. I also highly commend playing in person since it way more fun, If you go to your town/city local comic shop or card store I'm sure they know a DND group it's that popular and trust me if your weird and socially awkward like me we wont judge if anything join the club.
Id have to change countries for that 😭 we don't have comic book or card stores
GUYS IM A NEW DM HOW DO I DO THIS
First turn off all-caps (it's bad for accessibility)
aw alr
Then check #learn-to-play and read through at least the free rules so you have an idea of the game mechanics
i invited 6 ppl and i have no idea how to start
i got that down already, were doing a homebrew
and i watched sum tutorials the first session is next saturday
You don't have to memorize or know everything but knowing where to look up the rules is extremely helpful as a DM
Nice!
its based on an anime so ion have to make a world thank god
yeah I see
Okay so you have a game idea - good.
Next make sure your players have created characters suitable for the game.
Then write up some high level bullet-point notes for where the players start in your world, what are the different factions/powers in the world and how they conflict/work with each other, and what the plot for the story is.
my main problem is i have to make sm stat blocks for the enemies and even more for allies
yes theyre in the process of doing so
Don't. Use the existing monster statblocks and just tweak them a touch to make them flavored appropriately for your game.
Kobold is now "Dangerous Ninja"
Or whatnot
Don't make more work then you have to
basically the setting is modern day, and a massive group of sorcerers exorcise cursed spirits and evil sorcerers under the goverment
I see thanks
now another problem is
basically theres a highschool for sorcerers and now my players group has a very talented and strong teacher for their group
now my problem is that in every encounter she will step in if they start dying
so no actual stakes
what do i do about that
and of course theres a plethora of other supr strong sorcerers running around the country doing missions
Sigh. You made a DMPC. A DM Player Character is like a DM stand-in to push the game in specific directions. Don't do that. Allies are fine and sometimes the DM does need to intervene more directly but that should be rare.
But they should be background scenery
Not get involved
except as needed and very rarely
so its not like the usual dnd world where the world is hostile or neutral to the party, the goverment helps the party so ion know how to make that work either
You as the DM present problems to the players (to push the story) and let the players decide how their characters react and interact with that problem.
ugh its lore theyre first years so they get a sensei (Im not the sensei, shes an npc.) I do have a character but hes just a normal student
Again make the government and teachers background. They don't actively participate. They provide information and context, not solutions.
oh and to be specific the anime is JJK and its set 16 years after the manga finished
okay thats a good idea
but like they dont have to worry about being fed or finding quarters or making camp
At this point we've hogged up #dnd-newcomers and the questions and thread has thoroughly moved into #dm-discussion territory
i'm confused about this bit
"Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action."
from beastmaster
Does that mean if i already attacked on the beast's attack action
it means that i can only attack 1 time on my own attack action because the extra attack was used on the beast?
Kind of, but the other way around.
You take your Action to command the beast to attack. If you have the Extra Attack feature, you can then also make an attack when commanding the beast with this action.
You can also take the Attack action yourself to attack twice instead of commanding the beast.
a consistent schedule is required for dnd right
I wouldn't say required, but certainly good to have.
That unfortunate, but hey see in your country if they're any club of the sort. But like I said check the Find a Game channel.
that is unfortunate then
Try looking for community servers. Many run games as and when there are folk available. It's not the same as a dedicated campaign, generally, but it could get you a go.
yea have to have a look
The reason why is community games are more likely to have drop in and drop out players or play limited length games, thus allowing you to only worry about availability for a lower number of sessions. If you will, "I might not be available this day and this time every week" is kind of expected.
is there an specific age you have to be to join?
No, but some groups may specify that they are for minors or adults respectively.
Also note that Discords terms of service (and many online platforms) require a minimum age of 13
Would playing BG3 help me with the rules of DND or is it different? I know the fighting is roughly the same but is there anything big that’s different
Hey I am super interested in getting into Dnd but I live in an area where we have one game store that is crazy expensive. I also have no clue how dnd works at all other then it’s a rp game that uses dice and a dm. What would be the best way to get into it
I'd say you're probably better off having a look at the Free Rules. BG3 has enough little differences to muddy the water, and because the process are all automated (click button, see result) it's not great as a teaching aid. It could help with some of the concepts, certainly.

I have done some research on how to play DnD by myself, learned classes, races and I almost exactly know how to make a character but I wanted a tad more help from someone more experienced to make my first character sheet
Best thing to do is follow character creation chapter in PH or Basic Rules (Basic are free).
Is there a specific thing(s) you need help with?
& welcome! 🙂
How do I spread skill modifiers evenly and how does equipment work?
Thanks a lot :>
You mean to have similar modifiers on each stat? Or you mean how to apply those modifiers on the rest of the sheet?
I mean like, how do I apply them the right way? I can’t have a barbarian that has -2 on strength and +3 on intelligence and I know it’s not set so how do I understand what’s a +3, what’s a +1 ecc.?
Equipment for starting characters comes from your class and your background. Your choices will list what equipment comes from each.
During play, equipment is purchased using gold from shops, merchants, etc., or looted / found on monsters, the dungeon room floor, stolen, etc.
?tag new barbarian
Barbarian
Storm with Rage, and wade into hand-to-hand combat
Barbarians are mighty warriors who are powered by primal forces of the multiverse that manifest as a Rage. More than a mere emotion—and not limited to anger—this Rage is an incarnation of a predator’s ferocity, a storm’s fury, and a sea’s turmoil.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 13
Con. 14
Int. 10
Wis. 12
Cha. 8
Likes: Battle
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 12 + Con. modifier
First, use the Standard Array method. Second, it's:
8-9: -1
10-11: 0
12-13: +1
14-15: +2
Etc
The Standard Array method?
So, using Barbarian as an example, you should set your highest stats to things similar to this, STR, DEX, CON, primarily.
take standard array or point buy for stats. assign the highest values to your main stat and constitution, then to a secondary stat etc
CON is generally always important and every class has 1 or 2 others that help them be effective.
E.g., for a Ranger, Dex & Wis,for a Rogue, just Dex, for a Warlock, just CHA (Although it helps to have dex), etc.
So like strength gets a 15 cuz it’s my highest stat so +2 and intellect gets an 8 so -1?
basically, yeah
I heard somewhere you had to roll to decide those stats
So my CON gets the highest modifier, true?
Yep. Note though your background will give you either +1 to 3 stats or +2 to one an +1 to another, so that 15 can easily be a 16+ for +3.
here, we dont assume its the default, because then you cant really even begin making a character, as practice or otherwise, till a DM has signed off on your rolls
Mho, con should always be your second or third highest.
But characters don't have to be optimized. It is a choice.
I am still working on doing a full on game, still learning to play so one day I don’t have to bother my DM with stupid questions like these that I’m asking atm
well you should ask your DM 100% what method they want for stat generation
All good. The point I think was more that your DM may insist on certain methods not in the books.
So that must be done with a DM around cuz he chooses the stats of the background, it’s a tad subjective
well also stats are traditionally rolled in a way the DM can verify.
if they are rolled
DM does not choose stats for background unless you make a custom background. The backgrounds themselves define what stats can increase.
Isn’t background always custom like a backstory for your character?
not necessarily. in the 2024 rules, players are free to chose one of serveral predefined backgrounds and those come with predetermined stat increases and a feat
if you make a custom background instead, then ask your DM
For example, Acolyte says the following so the +2/+1 and +1/+1/+1 can be assigned to these 3.
Ability Scores: Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma
background and backstory are not the same, though one might inform the other
I’ll have to ask them if I ever get one then, I do have a char design and a custom backstory already
Acolyte?
backgrounds are a mechanical component of your character, and they need one to be complete
but they arent your full backstory
Acolyte is one of the backgrounds. As Omegon linked, they are explained in the section on Origin.
So like what led your character to adventuring from what I got?
basically. what kind of job they did before becoming an adventurer, very broadly
A specific link to Acolyte if you want it...
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Acolyte
Personally, as a Barbarian, you might like Soldier background.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Soldier
hello ^^
I didn’t click the second link, mb, I saw the different backgrounds but, yeah, I’ll have to talk to the DM cuz the backstory I did for my char’s customized and it wouldn’t fit too well to just have him with soldier bg or acolyte bg ecc.
Or I might add soldier just for the stats and try to modify the lore so it works
Or Criminal if that appeals more. (With Criminal, if the INT does not appeal, choose the +2/+1 on Dex/Con instead.)
Thanks a lot, I’ll try to make the character sheet with the soldier stat in a bit, I understood equipment and ability modifiers tho
Thanks both of you

Hey new folks
I’m here because I want to become more adept in combat situations
what y aneed to know
Hey, I heard that there was an area here where I could share my westmarch. Where exactly would that be?
Generally, you will want to focus on features that complement or in other ways give bonuses to elements in combat.
You probably want to ask in #optimization though if you're looking to say assemble a build.
i tried to make a character but idk if its good or bad can anyone review it for me if i send the link?
I’m in the process of potentially revamping my character and I want to be more prepared during battles as opposed to having to call on my DM for clarification
Go for it
You may DM me it
or that link lol
First off, it looks like you decided to go into monk with a barbarian main, which is not the best idea
Usually its best to just go full barbarian at that point
Nor do I think you are able to cast shadow monk spells while in rage
they key to characters at that level is ALL of the equipment and items they have, since you have no inventory, its hard to tell if your build will work
Would also allow you to push heavier into dex/con
i was trying to make a barbarian who uses his unarmed strike and path of the beast attacks
For clarification I’m in an anime-inspired campaign so traditional classes aren’t exactly in effect. Our “classes” are more centered on our primary power
Tavern brawler allows you to do better unarmed attacks anyway, so monk is not needed
so should i rework
I agree, drop monk, go full barb. get tavern brawler
Already has tavern brawler
ahhh missed that lol
Looks good
I'm geusing that the plan was for a barbarian with flurry of blows
Hey, I heard that there was an area here where I could share my westmarch. Where exactly would that be?
By the way, do you happen to know an answer to this?
what if i go 6 monk and get the shadow jump skill
Still less effective than a full barb
follow the instructions in #find-a-game . it tells you how to post to the community page
Appreciate it
If u want ppl to go on it then probably lfg
Y'all have no clue how happy i am, there is no word to describe it
why is that
I had my first DnD session today and it was AWESOME
HECK YEAH!!!
So apparently my race is Genasi
Apparently? Were you not aware of your species?
And, according to the DM, the best fitting class is a multiclass between a magician and alchemist
It was taken from a Russian website, since everyone at the table is Russian speaking
Those are not dnd classes
Interesting. I'm not sure I've ever heard of D&D where the race is unknown. There used to be rules for 0 level characters in earlier editions which could have no class, but these days, yeah, you would have both. Maybe the DM is heavily homebrewing.
Either way, glad to hear it was enjoyable!
Oh and not magician, it's sorcerer
Enjoyable is a HEAVY understatement
It was the true definition of peak
I have heard of campaigns where the DM builds the characters and the players learn more and more about them as the play. Also MANY will pre generate characters and players chose from the "stack"
I can proudly say that i am absolutely hooked on dnd now
Best part, my first roll was an 18, beginners luck moment
I just joined, can someone help me to start everything adventurers league related at one go(voice chat preferably) in a few hours?
For AL questions I recommend checking with the folks in #adventurers-league.
I’m not sure anyone will be able to jump on to a VC call on such short notice and timeframe.
Yeah, with a few hours I meant in like the whole day starting from 3 hours from now(just finished final exams in college)
Sorry for not being specific tho
Yeah check in with the folks in #adventurers-league as they will know the ins and outs of AL games
This is a very big server and we get a lot of newbies here every day. Few people will be comfortable jumping on vc with a stranger.
I am looking for a group to play with as a noob. I have D&D beyond with 2024 rules/tasha's, physical 2024 rulebook, a character(can make new), and roll 20 integration
oh ty
I might be able to give you half hour before I have to leave starting in about 10 to 15 minutes. Otherwise, best I can offer is 10 or 11 pm EDT (think, New York time).
(I play AL heavily and can answer a lot of questions relating to it.)
Only if someone creates one. BG3 is just a story created within D&D that can have many stories. Your DM would need to set up their campaign to be like BG3.
yeah :D
Best thing to do would be to check the looking for channels and if the game does not exist, maybe request on looking for DM that this is what you want.

you online rn?
i think i have no roles that allow me to join any vc(if there is one to begin with)
Yeah, we have to set up a private chat or do it on a different server basically. The server really doesn't support VCs.
All good. We can try later if still interested. Belated welcome. 🙂

Hello, so I recently decided to finally delve into dnd and created my first character today. Any tips for what I should do next?🥹
Hello there!
@mystic niche yes have a DM or Dungeon Master look at your character sheet when you join a server to make sure that your character sheet is done correctly and then find a one shot, mini campaign or full campaign within the server
Okay great, I did my character on DND beyond and also Roll20 so it should be easier to share.😌
Or should I do a physical one as well?👀
No you’re just fine with both ways for now
You can find games to join on here or at roll20
Ok great, thanks much ❤️
hey im building my first character what rules do i use?
You can use the 2014 or legacy or the new 2024 version but depending on how the DM wants
If it's plain text, it's theirs.
Like this is yours: <t:1751149860:f>
Just put what time zone you’re in and what works for u. If a DM is interested, they can figure out if that fits their needs
Heyy I’m new to this yall me and my friend have just joined and are really interested help would be appreciated !! <33 @vivid nymph
Her tjx and sloth ! There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Is it best to write everything down when creating your character so you don’t forget?? 🙂
omg yesss good question.
Absolutely
Ok tyy
If yer using pen and paper absolutely. If you’re using something like roll20 or D&D beyond, it records most things for u
Oh good to know, tysm!
Hello I'm new to the discord
HI queen how are u
Just chilling at work, and making a campaign but with my go to guy, for dnd questions is being slow to answer I looked up dnd chats and here we are.
lol got ya!!! love to hear it making a campaign!!!!
it is a paranormal spooky ghosty campaign, I got the idea, from how you start the turn of forune's wheel, the multiverse campaign
sweet. Its been a long time since i ran one like that
Can I nudge the campaign design chat to #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building so as to keep this chat free for new to D&D folks to get help getting started? Thanks!
sorry
No worries! Just trying to keep things on topic! (also good luck with your campaign!)
Yo chat just got here what’s good?
Can I stack proficiencies using class and background? So like if I choose to be a barbarian and to be proficient in intimidation but then I also have the soldier bg I have another proficiency bonus on intimidation
Is nice
Nope
You either have proficiency in something, or you don't
Makes sense, would had been op if I could
No double proficiency then
No you can do that
Ranger, Rogue, Bard, and the Skilled feat all give Expertise, which allow you to add double your proficiency bonus to a skill
Woah cool beans
Sorry for late reply, was working on the character sheet, I’ll keep that in mind if I ever get to play DnD

hey guys I'm trying to get into DnD but I literally know nothing about DnD and when I look up lessons theres only a few words I can understand and I dont know the rules, I dont know what the basics are for making a character (character sheets are confusing and idk what anything means on them yet) so.. yeah if someone could explain in like terms for a 5 year old or something that would be amazing 💔 😭

Welcome MOSS. Those links are pretty good.
Yeah it's a lot.
Check the links in the bot here, start perusing the rules.
If you have any more specific questions feel free to ask
To your specific last question though ....
D&D is basically a type of cooperative storytelling.
The Dungeon Master decides what the setting & challenges to be dealt with and acts as the person who fills in how the setting and non-player elements interact with what the characters do.
The Players decide what to do to interact in the world with their characters.
Actual play is very much a response type system:
- DM describes something.
- Players declare what their characters do.
- DM describes results.
- Repeat from Step 1.
Dice may be used to randomly determine assorted things in steps 1, 2, and 3.
THANK YOU!! 🙏
How does the character sheet work? Is there one I use to start out with, and is there a less complicated one?
The easiest character sheet to use is the D&D Beyond one because it's pretty well documented and fills out most things for you once you make character choices. I find this less complicated because you don't need to know as much of the rules because things are in dropdowns.
I guess the drawback is it doesn't tell you where it's putting things (it just does), so you might not learn as much to do it yourself. To learn better, what you may want to do is use any 5E sheet you can find, and go through Character Creation in the Basic Rules (that are free!) from the link provided below. This process should help you understand better what gets filled in on the sheet and where. You can always then switch to Beyond for its conveniences if you want to go that route. (Depending on how you want to handle any purchased content that you eventually purchase (digital or paper), D&D Beyond may or may not make sense.)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
I think my problem with Beyond is that there’s just so much and I don’t know what to put😭
I mean, I'd tell you there's no wrong things to put, but there are strong opinions out there as to how to optimize characters, but optimization is a choice.
The nice thing with Beyond is it limits your choices with dropdowns or selections so you can see what things are available given what you have chosen before. If you're not even sure what class to play, you probably want to have an idea about the character first, like do you wnat to beat things with a stick or cast destructive spells or cast healing or helpful spells or be a negotiator or intimidating presence in the party, or whatever. That helps you loosely get to a class which you can then use to get you on your way.
So I have to pick a role like Rouge or something, then a race?
Basically, yeah. You just kind of step through Beyond's character creator. Tab by Tab starting from the one furthest to the left. By the time you get to the last tab, you'll basically have a complete character.
You can jump around, but going tab by tab allows you to focus on the decisions one at a time.
& class should almost always be early as much of the character's play will be heavily influenced by the chosen class.
... so it really shouldn't be an "afterthought"
Either method works though... Tab by tab or follow the creating-a-character chapter from D&D Beyond's Basic rules.
Im filling out a sheet rn, what’s a “thieves can’t”
Thieves Cant is a made up language of sort of signs and signals where you still speak in one language but it's sort of "in code" to hide what you're saying from people who don't know what it means.
An equivalent idea is when someone in their 50s tries to understand the slang of a teen. It sounds like English words, but they don't know what it means. So, this is that, but it's deliberate on the part of criminals and the like to hide their activities and negotiations.
So it’s a special language only thieves know?
Pretty much, yeah. To be honest, it's heavily underutilized in most games. You may find you don't even use it most of the time.
But it's free as a Rogue and you can't take something else in its place, so it's the kind of thing you just write down in case you ever need it. 🙂
After I’m done making my character, what do I do?
So, your DM may ask you to do something different to create a character but it's good to create one to know the basics even if you might have to make a slightly different one.... Which is to say.... Your next step is to start to look for a game to join (or some friends to play with).
And that search starts here....

Woah… [insert William Dafoe looking up]
Yeah, that's usually the fun part. Actually getting to play. 🙂
Thank you many for this
Hopefully it's the beginning of many happy games of D&D for you. 🙂
What are the terms I should know?
Ability check, attack roll, saving throw, hit dice, hit points, DC, AC, class level, spell level, spell slots.
A lot of what you will want to know is in the first chapter of the basic rules and the Glossary. The Glossary is invaluable as a quick lookup for certain terms.
Hello what should i know and do to get in a game
Check out #find-a-game
It contains instructions for the server's LFG channels

Ik he says "i call this one, bluesteel"
Sorry made it awkward
That was more my fault lol, but yea
Got curious of DND and wanted to give it a try but I'm guessing it's not just you can do everything I'm guessing there is rules to this right like character creation and stuff and wondering what rules I should know before looking for a DND game to commit to

Those links are a huge help Kenshiro
One way to get acclimatised is to put together a practice character: class, species, background. Use the Standard Array method for ability scores, see what you can put together, look it up as you go.
I'll look at the links and thank y'all good folks I'll definitely try this see you later.
hey is it ok to join in the middle of campaign as a totally new player or will it be to hard to follow?
Well itll be hard. But other players and the DM will help you.
ok i just dont want to ruin the expirience for the others by asking to many quistions but i guess they know im new
I'm back for a new question.
What's a human or elf
My character concept revolves around stealth and strength build as a rogue like a animal predator. for my character backround outlander.
I don't know which species I should do human or elf
Might wanna ask in #character-discussion
But as a newcomer answer, any race and/or species can be any class, so you don't need to worry about something not working (There's literally like, two examples I can think of that have some problems but that's about it, neither one with human or elves)
I'll ask in there this time and thanks for the answer good folk.
currently in a pbp as a dm and the players are doing well (mostly) but I keep forgetting things like the story and what happened earlier. I also keep forgetting other details mid-fight and I end up accidently turning the fight against the players even if they should be winning.
tysm for ur help it’s much appreciated!
glad i can help
Hello im a new player trying to find a table
Hey Sheln
Hello Mitcho
Hey. I’ve been playing for a while but am currently looking for a group. I generally play tiefling and dragon born
How are you Sheln
Im ok im just looking for something new to spice up my life ive wanted to try dnd out for awhile
D&D can do that lol.
Ivy what time zone are you in?
Central (CST)
lol thats so true!
Hello, I would like to know where I can find a online Dnd session? I am new and have seen so much of dnd and I would like to play it with a group
You can use the LFG channels in this discord to look for a group. Just keep in mind it could take theoretically anywhere from a few hours to literal months, to find a game right for your schedule, your timezone, and what kind of game you want to play in.
Thanks
What are KFG channels and how do I find them?
LFG, and they're in the "Find a Game" channel category in this discord server. Check the FAQ: #find-a-game
Just sharing this podcast that was recommended to me as a beginner

The Wikipedia link would help you find it on your preferred platform I think
is it like introduction to DnD? I am like completly new I only played BG3 and I would like to try and start playing real DnD but I dont know anything about it much so, I d need some guid for total bigginers.
It's a family that starts playing DnD together, one of the brothers is the DM, they're all podcasters/ performers so it's entertaining. You're going along with them as they start their first campaign. I'm just getting started with it and so far they're kind of sticking to the rules
For other intro stuff I found a random "playing dnd with high schoolers" put out by a high school media class and their teacher on YT
alr thx
https://youtu.be/52NJTUDokyk?si=x3sNKporZWtvrfTb
This is the high school one, there's multiple seasons

why does my character deals so low damage
Hey looking for a Group im New to dmd though but would really like to get into it
At a broad level, extra damage often comes from your abilities, spells, whatever, sometimes loosely called damage riders (things you add on to damage) or in the case of Fighters, it often comes from extra attacks.
In the case of your Barbarian, you have Reckless Attack, which increases chance of Critical Hits through Advantage, you have Brutal Strike which adds extra dice, you have Graze in case you miss, the additional damage of Rage is not in there, etc. And of course, by level 20, you will likely have magic items that do more.
It's also not always about sheer damage output. You have a number of things that help keep you alive to get a chance to do damage too.
In general or specifically you want players from here to play online?
Doesnt matter to me whatever works tbh just really wanna try it
After using DNDB for all my chars, I wrote a paper character sheet for the first time
It's a 2014 Gloomstalker Assassin using rolling for stat allocation (I lucked out super hard here)
Could someone check it out and see if I made any mistakes? Would really appreciate it
Tells you how to find a in person or online group easily
Thank you
You're welcome! Also, if you do look for a group at a library or game store it will be easier if you maybe get together a group that shares something collectively. For instance, my group was all strangers that contacted online and met in a game store, but we were all homeschoolers. Makes it a little easier and more likely you'll be on the same page but its not strictly neccessary
heyo everyone
Id like to start online though but thanks for the help
Made my first Characzer yesterday but i dont know if it even works hahaha
So, this is more of an optimization question that belongs in #optimization but as a quick aside to help you out here as you seem to be indicating you are new....
D&D is also not Diablo 4 in that at maximum level you should not be expecting damage in the millions or billions. The top builds for damage would still only be in the 100-200 range and require some serious synergies. At level 20, 50-100 damage is much more common.
If you swap out Tavern Brawler (or Sentinel if you prefer) for Great Weapon Master and use the Greataxe, you will do:
1d12 + 7(STR) + 6(GWM) + 4(Rage) which averages 24 already or average 48 over the 2 attacks.
Add 2d10 for Brutal Strike is another 11 for 59 which is already decent damage.
At this point we have no magic items or crits or help from your ally in here and have factored nothing in for your ability to reroll damage.
If you crit on one of your 2 attacks, then you would add an extra 7 through another d12 plus a whole 3rd attack as a Bonus Action for another 24 for 31 more bringing you up to 90.
Your damage would be fine.
If your intention was expecting damage from unarmed strikes / natural weapons, you just are not going to see as high numbers. If Damage is the focus, Focusing heavily on the axe instead would allow you to swap out Path of the Beast for something that would do even more damage with the axe. For example, 2024 Berserker will allow you to add 4d6 (avg 14) while 2024 Zealot will allow you to add 1d6+10 (also around 14) once per Turn. Note with the 4d6, if it crits, you would roll that twice effectively adding 28 bringing your crit total to an average of around 118.
(Side note, not an optimization expert but it really comes down to focusing your build on specific things instead of lots of things.)
@teal temple can you Review my first Charakter and Teller me if it works and what i should chance for ither character
I can take a look if you wish. I will need a link and you need the sharing settings on Public.
In general though, what works is what you want to play. Much like BG3, there is more than one way to get through challenges and it is not all about sheer damage output or burst damage in D&D. People that want to play what they are playing often play better and overall make better parts of the team.
Okay ill dm you the link in a second
how can i find a dm that is opne to new comers

Where can I find info for a new DM?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
It may depend largely on what type of information you need, but the Basic Rules that are free on D&D Beyond also includes sections geared towards Dungeon Masters that should likely be read over. DMs are often also well served to read player sections so they understand a little of what players can do and can make rulings and/or can answer questions. Inevitably, players will ask about something they are unclear on or if they are trying to do something that is either not covered in the rules or they want to "break them" in this case and can explain why it should be allowed.
Adding to what the other person said I would also try and find abit about balanceing and some stuff about what u should ask your players to roll for (like the difference between perseption and investigation ect)
Thank you 🫶
Wazzzzuuupppp
hey turtle
How are you doing today?
I am well and u
I'm good, trying to do elemental damage shenanigans with a ranger.
Ive gotten poison, trying to figure out how I could get more elements in.
To more seriously optimize, you probably want #optimization , but as an easy option, if you're using 2024 rules, you can cast Hunter's Mark as a concentration spell which will at least add 1d6 Force. At higher levels, you can cast something like Elemental Weapon. Note though, that for a class that is often somewhat associated with Elements, Rangers actually have minimal effects that actually add "elemental damage". Especially in 2024, it's mostly weapon damage, piercing damage, psychic damage, or necrotic damage, etc. and minimal to no options for elemental damage.
So another question, what does the subscription for the DND website give me?
Does it give me a free campaign that I can use?
Like if I were to buy it would it give me everything I need to make it all easier
As a player, access to things like homebrew and unlimited player slots are two of the big ones. DMs see somewhat more benefit.
There is no free campaign per say for subscribing but theoretically one of the monthly subscription benefits could be a campaign, but I don't think it's ever been something like that. It's usually some small thing like digital dice.
Books that you purchase are independent of your subscription and a subscription is not required to use any books you purchase.
Thank you, I gotta figure out how to go from here if elemental isnt the path.
So if I was to use a campaign there like Frozen Sick, and I bought the subscription what does it help with the campaign? I'm reading about the maps and I'm a bit confused
One of the bigger benefits of a Master Tier subscription for at least one person in a group is the ability to activate sharing for the group. This allows everyone in the group to benefit from the book purchases of any person in that campaign.
Subscription benefits are on this page:
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/subscribe
In general, it's not much more than what the page says.
Maps is the WotC Virtual Table Top, the only person that needs a sub for your campaign is the DM.
IIRC, I believe Druids have the most stuff tied to "the elements".
are natural weapons bad or something and whats the max damage or average damage you can get with natural weapons based on my build
They're just a little harder to stack bonuses to be a top contender for damage as a lot of things don't trigger off natural weapons, so Unarmed Strikes are usually the better alternative to weapons / spells. (and thus you see more Monks in 2024 than in 2014 as Monks got nice upgrades)
As I mentioned though, part of the problem is that speccing only on damage is more of a trap in D&D than it is in some other games. Glass Cannons tend to heavily depend on their allies or end up dead on the dungeon room floor. Or white room builds that don't work out in actual play... E.g., I've seen a number of builds that have a round or two setup. Thing is, often in T3 or T4, especially at tables of 5-7, a battle can often be over in a round and a half, the result of which being that barring a really good initiative roll, the "OP build" rarely gets to happen. Another common problem is a limited resource that often is available less times than combats that they could be used in.
I don't focus on damage directly, it just felt wrong for a level 20 character to hit so little, but thanks to your explanation, I now understand better why it doesn't hit, the reason I'm hung up on natural weapons hitting little is because the character's main fighting method will be natural weapons because of flavor, story and i like the bestial idea of a barbarian turning his hands or mouth into monster-like and attacking.
Might also want to consider building for more than level 20. In many games, even in Organized Play like AL, Tier 4, much less Level 20 is a heck of a lot less common than games that are running levels 1 to 10. Many games end in Tier 3. Even in the major WotC published Hardcovers, very few actually make it past level 14.
i talked with my dm and he said he will accept only claws as unarmed not the tail and bite which is fair considering the fact that claws is the main damage method for path of the beast
Is there a channel for Frozen Sick?
Always great when the DM will help you out!
yeah i know the instant lvl 20 character build is not necessary but i like building characters, even if the character will change drastically while playing the game it gives me some skeleton to work with
also thanks for your responses
I don't think there is for Frozen Sick specifically, but if you'll be running it, maybe #dm-discussion or #1029833015423143957 will be helpful.
also i cant seem to use the old alert with the human origin, is there a way to use it?
Hello folks! Birdie/Soph here and I'm new-ish to DND! I'm trying to find a campaign for myself and my dad and brother to play (brother is also new-ish, and dad doesn't know anything about DND)! Should we try to find a campaign to join, or should I try to learn to DM to the best of my ability and run a one-shot with them? Any advice appreciated ❤️

Okay so i checked with an english language website, and the Genasi race is a thing, and is in the "The rarer DnD races include:" list
Queen those links from the bot are very helpful in learning
If you had direct questions feel free to ask
I think i have a dnd beyond installed somewhere
You're doomed to the fate i have experienced, the second you have your first DnD session, you will be absolutely hooked into it
Birdie, I agree both options are great. If yer under 18, you’ll have more luck just doing it yourself to be honest
Is a website Queen or an app on it phone but I suggest using it on a computer when yer learning
The sheer excitement i had when i kept getting good rolls when my party was ambushed by goblins cannot be explained through words
Well a pc isnt an option for me
Gnome? I like gnomes
Got ya!!! The phone app is great too just a smidge easier on a computer
The Genasi are a group of 4 subraces of plane-touched individuals (to the elemental planes of fire, air, earth, and water). They are indeed "rarer" in some settings. If you wanted to play them the old version can be found in the Elemental Evil's Player Companion (free) and the updated version can be found in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (paid).
Yeah, my DM recommended me that race due to the soft metal outer shell of my character (soft as in very, very slightly tougher than regular skin), which allowed me to come up with a few of tricks(?) and spells that the DM was extremely hyped over
Well, because "metal is a sub element for earth", according to my DM
An ability to create a small tool, shield or weapon for an ally for the next 3 moves, or an ability to cover an ally in thin metal armor for 10 moves(this one uses mana, so the use amount is very limited)
The armor bonus is also small, obviously
It seems like you're making a homebrew subrace then? If you'd like feedback or discuss the idea you should check out #homebrew
There is a lot of info i have to admit
Will do! I'm currently in the process of making a prototype of my character list at the moment so i can check with my DM, then I'll be working on the subrace
there is queen. I suggest working through the steps of making a character. each step gives good instructions on how to do it and you get used to some of the mechanics of playing just by doing so
Now im creating the background
nice!!! that can be fun. read your optoins and pick how you think your character came to be n this place in their life to become an adventurer.
Hello and good afternoon :]
Howdy Nai
How are you?
great and u
What do i put in faith?
doin great ty
Im trying to kind of bend the system to make me a raccoon anthro
You could put in what god/gods your character follows but in most cases, this field is optional.
that would be dipping in to homebrew races i do believe as I have not seen one specific.
You can take a regular D&D race and flavor it (describe it) as being a racoon anthro - but always check with your DM and group as such a creature may not really fit the setting or game vibe the group is playing with.
Such as Tabaxi which are feline anthro
It would take more time to find a session that way but idc
i would bet many DMs would be ok with reskinning a normal race or help with a homebre race
Problem is what do i set as a base? A human and in story say it was cursed?
@surreal ravine I know someone who can help you with the raccoon race
No there isn't an official D&D racoon race
You'd have to work that out officially with your dm
But i dont have kne
if yer just having fun buidling a character you can do what feels right to u
If u follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Okay
How do you play with others online and how do I begin my character creation process me and @vivid nymph are wondering!
?tag new online
^ Various ways folks play D&D online
I’m playing in the Dragon Heist module campaign and we have a player who is actually a raccoon race
And if you're looking for a group to join please read #find-a-game
tjx if you follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Old Alert is tied to the 2014 rules while new Alert is tied to the 2024 rules. As you are using the Human from 2024 and likely a 2024 class, it's going to tend to the newer version.
Awesome! I would be curious as to the Homebrew source they use because I am rather intrigued by the idea lol
There is a raccoon race called the Mapach
That's not an official species/race though
You mean the marparch from Humblewood?
Ye
It is in Humblewood which is 3rd party and not official
How do I find local people to run d&d with I’m trying to get into and woild like to play with people who got experience

Okay now i have to asign points etc
what class did u chose
Sorcerer/druid
interesting combo 🙂
Im leaning into a self proclaimed queen of raccoons
Humberwood is UA
No it's 3rd party.
Unearthed Arcana is official D&D playtest material (they are testing things before it gets produced officially)
i love that queen
Oh ok
So now i have to choose the points and ability scores
it is sad that UA doesnt work on D&D Beyond
Some DMs allow it
I mean you can homebrew things to recreate the UA for playtesting but you're on your own to do that
Also don't publish it
correct, just tough to do lol
Hm
But it can be done
what has ye perplexed queen
.
This should be in another channel right
got ya lol. well sorcerer LOVES charasima. Druids LOVE wisdom. ALL characters benefit from constitution so I'd focus on those 3 first
And the ability scores,it says i can choose manual, standard array and point buy
Sorry if helping me is causing a problem
Thought you guys didn’t have any time for character creation
chose standard array or point buy
Manual stats may be better

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Yeah Humblewood is a setting/book made by hit point press, I’m awaiting for the expansions tho
I use Avrae for manual stats it’s easier
I think im done
Awesome!!
Althou not sure if i did all correctly
Me shy to ask me wanna join
Hm?
queen you can drop over to #character-discussion to get their thoughts

Manually setting stat scores is not an official method to generate ability scores. Anything outside of the official 3 methods is homebrew and isn’t likely to be accepted by the average DM
If you have a character idea or need help developing your character #character-discussion is a great place to ask!
What I was saying @wheat crystal was about the Avrae command randchar for stats
I call it manual stats because you get to put the numbers anywhere you want
You have to manually do that
i have the entirety of the 5e dnd collection (monsters, maps storys) everything the only problem is that im not exactly sure how it works, im trying to find a experienced dm that can give me a rundown of how the tyranny of dragons story works as im having problems understanding as this would be my first campaign ran.
Id suggest checking in with folks in #dm-discussion for general D&D DM tips and tricks and for your specific adventure hit up #1029833015423143957
yeah sure!

What is foundry and DDB
Foundry is a VTT (Virtual Tabletop, a program that can be used to assist running DnD and other similar games online)
By DDB do you mean DnD Beyond?
DnD Beyond is an official website that serves as both a market for Official and Homebrew content, as well as some features of a VTT.
hey guys im completly new to dand d never played but i heard a lot about it and wanted to give it a try
Hey Tri. There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
okay thanks
dumb question but im playing a fighter with Shillelagh and id says i need misiltoe and a shamrock leaf how do you get these stuff?
Ask your DM if there’s a store in the area that sells them or ask if you can find them in the forest if you are around one @plucky pivot
i didnt start yet was wandering if you can buy like a starting item but ill just wait for the campaign to start
It won’t be in your starting equipment
thanks
You’re welcome
I would recommend you do a few modules before starting out with your own homebrew campaign @green carbon
Oh I plan on such
I more so mean to prepare
Yes you can read the modules and come with ideas for your homebrew campaign
Does Quests of the infinite staircase count?
Any module counts
I am really just asking for general tips on map creation and so on I don't really need inspiration for the story
Equipment needed etc
Yes if you can transfer your novel to module it can be done
There are map makers that you can get
Google map makers and you will find a list of them
What about equipment that I need
That would depend on your characters in the novel and your players
That’s in the phb and dmg
Kyle means to say Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide
Aw man, wouldn't it be awesome if you went to the pub and you got D&D. 🙂
Dungeon draft and alchemist are solid map makers
There’s a Pub in Philadelphia PA where they do play DnD
One of my players DMs there
They are paid games though
(adds Philly to vacation destination list)
I can get the name of the Pub the next time I talk to her
There is also a place called boards to beer that does Dnd every first and third wednesday of the month in Memphis.
I’m just 4 hours away from Memphis
There is an event going down in pa this weekend no cash tho so eh
That sucks
youre kidding
No @sterile forge
have you heard of Greater Memphis Magic Arena? Because they have dnd oneshots Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays 5:45pm until 9pm
No I haven’t
i attend the Wednesday one shots
If I’m up that way I will check it out
wow, same
Hey... im new to dnd and im actually looking to learn and play. I hear its fun and all and yea jst kinda interested..

ok thank you
lol
mood tbh.
how do I describe the psychic damage im doing to the enemy?
Up to you, but I most often describe it as an very powerful and piercing headache.
can I just describe it like resurfacing childhood trauma
"my character stabs the enemy making the enemy remember the neglect they received from their family"
like that
Unless called for by the DM, I wouldn't spontaneously make up details about the enemy I'm fighting.
You could describe the effects of psychic damage on your own character like that though.
Hi! I’m Azalea! I’m new here to the D&D server!
Hello there. I'm sirmnmthehufflepuff, Huffle for short, I'm new to the server but not to DnD. Doesn't mean I know everything though. I look forward to the different topics and stories
Hello, Huffle!
Me as well! My campaign broke off about 6 years ago now lol. I also look forward to different stories and topics!
Hi Azalea. lol That's to bad but hopefully you can find another one! 😁
Thanks!

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful information to get you started. I think the Basic Rules (under the quick links section) does a good job of explaining how the game works, but if you want a more simplified explanation, you could start with the small guided demo, below:
Can someone explain dnd beyond and how to start a campaign
And i dont get what the dices does
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
So, the first thing that's important to understand is that D&D is not a video game. The game is played in the imagination. You use words to describe your character and the world around you. You don't play it on a website or anything like that. D&D Beyond is a set of tools that can make it easier to play the game, but its not required by any means. Think of it more like a well organized notebook
If you want more specific help navigating D&D beyond's website and such, there is a #ddb-support channel in this server for that specifically
Ah, thank you
If we compare D&D to a board game, D&D Beyond can be the rulebook, tracking sheets dice and counters. Although much like a game, you an provide these yourself or make up your own.
Players (and batteries?!) And what happens at the table is largely not present
It’s not d&d related
HI i'm new, used to play dnd back in the day on 3 and 3.5, haven't played in 10-15 years, i've read 5e rules, can someone help me clarify some things?
Sure shoot your questions!
how often do new games or table show up?
Folks post every day in #looking-for-players, so I think pretty often?
what is the average length of games there? like mostly one shots or monthly campaigns?
I think it's a mix.
and lastly, whats is exacly the adventures league? i've read it but couldn't undestand clearly
No tag al found.
It's the organized play program of D&D. You use specific rules so you can port your character to any AL table.
?tag new al
No tag al found in category new.
Could have sworn that was the command...
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

There we go
yeah i've read it, but it is like any other game on 5e?
AL means you might play with a different group and DM, but the rules are more consistent table to table.
But it is 5e.
Think of it maybe as "5e with standardized play"
How do i play?
How do you find a game or you want to know how to learn how to play or something else?
Hey greed, There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Just to see if I have this straight: for most D&D you would create a new character for each campaign or group you play with. But in AL you're able to create a single character that you can "take with you" to different AL sessions with different people, but that character and their stats and everything will persist?
Pretty much, yep.
The rules are also established by Admins of the program but otherwise fall back to pretty close to RAW, plus adventures are modified or written specifically for play in AL, so there is also more consistency in play experience from table to table.
In a regular game, DM decides everything. In AL, there is a rules set that limits what DMs can do much as a DM might restrict players in a regular game.
I like to say, AL rules trumps RAW which trumps DM.
Does style of play vary as much in AL as in regular play? Meaning the ratio of combat, rp, exploration?
Depends on the content being run. But in a 4h one shot, you will generally find at least one combat.
I have a quick question for multi classing If I have paladin class already could I add warlock class or would the rules just refuse to allow it?
Since many WotC hardcovers are legal for AL play, it would probably be much the same for those.
For 2h or 4h modules, it has more variance. The older modules were using XP instead of milestones and used to focus heavily on combat. Newer content is much more balanced but people still seem to like boss fights.
So long as you meet the prerequisites, you can multiclass into any class whenever you gain a level. There's no rules saying things like "you can't gain warlock levels if you have paladin levels" or anything like that
Oh thank you
Note you need at least 13 STR and 13 CHA for that combo.
Thanks Cal
where is the lfg channel for AL?
AL play is done in-person, and they're scheduled through the game stores that host it. You'll need to use WOTC's store locator tool to find locations near you that host it
There isn't really one beyond #1050206572535623690
That said, you can totally play AL online
Oh, I didn't know that
Games are generally just organized via community servers rather than here
When they aren't tied to a specific store or event
In person AL definitely exists but I also know people who have only ever played it online. (The store finder is also somewhat notoriously incomplete 😅 )
Visit your local gaming store and ask. Similarly if there is a Con nearby, there is usually a D&D presence in a number of them. Local area people can usually direct you to where they play.
You can even start your own. Game store owners are often interested in getting people in the shops and sometimes will only want a reasonable sitting fee for the space.
Yo chat I need character writing advice
I’m trying to avoid a mistake I made in the last legit campaign I was in which was forgetting to give my character a story arc of his own aside from his backstory
That’s something you need to work out with the DM.
Best 2nd level spells? Ima divination wizard
#optimization is probably a better channel for that question!

Hi! I’m somewhat new to D&D, I’ve never played but have a few characters!
Welcome
what is good gang. im new to d&d but like i already know a good amount of things. im heavily cracked on forgotten realms lore, and just finished writing my first character backstory which i may or may not ever play !! yippee
#looking-for-players may be the place for games how ever knowing lore is secondary since allot of tables don’t follow it and simply make things up.(as is with the game lol)
just got into dnd a few days ago and i’ve really taken a liking to the elven race, drow! how could i create a true neutral drow as their race usually leans towards chaotic evil? any advice helps ^^
Is it me or is the rules for crafting potions of healing super aids
anything past the basic one has obscene time costs and gp costs
BG3 has a Drow subrace called Seldarine Drow who are actually opposed to Lolth "https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Drow". The NPCs still reacted and assumed you were evil in most cases, but you could explain yourself
super helpful, thank you!
BG3 isn’t the same as 5e, though it extensively bases its mechanics on it. One such change was making the Drow a distinct species instead of a sub race of elves and giving it 2 subraces
In essence, non evil Drow are totally possible. If your game is set in the Forgotten Realms there are plenty of in-universe ways you may have not grown up in typical Drow society. Most commonly you were just born elsewhere. I would check out the FR wiki to get a huge rundown of Drow society, the difference between the followers of Seldarine and Lloth, and even examples of good Drow:
thanks sm!!
ill look into it
AL doesn't do online games?
Hello! I'm new to DND and friends have thoroughly questioned me on if I have, in fact, played DND 😼 so I am here to learn, get comfortable roleplaying, and maybe join a school squad this upcoming year!
If there's a server for online DND, that's my main focus :)
They do - maybe check with #adventurers-league to see if folks know of any places hosting online AL games
Check out #learn-to-play for useful info and links to help get you started with D&D.
Then when you're ready to find a group to play D&D with, check out #find-a-game and read it carefully as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
Sounds good, thanks!!
Guys i need help to know how to use the dices correctly
i didnt understood in the book
For most things a D20 will work (20 sided dice)
What exactly about dices you don’t understand?
this i get it, but like when you want to an action how do you know what to do with your abilities and skills
Well it depends on the action
Usually a player describe what their character is going to do, DM decides what skills / abilities that is suitable for the situation.
You tell the DM what you want your player character to do.
If a dice roll is needed, the DM will tell you. Usually this is a D20 test where you roll a D20 and add the relevant skill/attribute modifier and any bonuses.
The DM then interprets the results and determines what happens in the game context.
For example: “I want to listen if there is any movement behind the door.”
DM calls for a perception check.
Ohh you mean like when a DM needs to use things like “perception” or “animal care”?
i give an exemple, you want to get information from someone and you have like +11 in persusasion how does it work
Best judgement personally. Like for persuasion if the person is a scary or mean character you may need like 15+ but like for a 5 year old you may need a 5 to beat
but how does the +11 works
The DM would ask you to make a charisma persuasion check.
You would roll a 20 sided dice and add your persuasion modifier to it (+11).
If you rolled a 15, that would result in a total roll of 26.
The DM dteremines what happens - if you succeeeded or not and what exactly happens in the game.
Well adding it to D20 I think.
that is the number you will add to the d20 number you roll. Those + or - numbers are how good, or bad, you are with a skill.
+11 persuasion is quite high, but not infallible. The DM would know how difficult it is to persuade/interrogate someone, or even roll against your persuasion roll
hey im building a character sheet with warlock and using pact weapon is there a way to add the weapon to the action options or do i need to remember the dmg dice for the weapons
There can be situations that is just a “no” to your persuasion check.
You can’t just ask the king to give up his country, for example.
how does 26 works if the dices only have 20 faces
that's what i dont get
15 + 11 = 26
Hey guys new to this server and dnd as a whole, I wanted to ask how should I get into a new group as i find the process a tiny bit confusing and don't want to put it in the wrong channel
In UndyingNoob’s example, you roll a d20 and get 15, you then ADD your modifier, which is +11, for a total of 26 persuasion check.
To use the bot commands to create a post in our LFG channels, start typing /looking-for then select the option for what kind of post you want to create (looking for a DM? use the /looking-for dm option).
The bot gives your a form to fill out. Fill it out and submit.
Bot creates the post and attaches a thread to it - use the thread to make any corrections/updates and communicate with folks.
If you are asking about sheet on DDB, you can create a custom action.
Oh ight thanks mate
what does it do
Whatever the DM decides that result means in the context of the game
That result is fairly high so in many cases it would mean the character successfully persuades the target creature/group.
But ultimately the DM decides what it means in the context of the D&D game they are running.
It depends on the NPC you interact with.
For example, some might give you a pass with a skill check result of 20 or higher, some might need 30+.
DM is the one who decide the DC.
And a pass doesn’t mean it goes your way 100%.
oook
Do DND have dice
For example, let’s say DM might decide a store owner will give you a 10% discount if you pass the persuasion check, but there is no way for the store owner to give out whatever you ask for free of charge, no matter your skill check result.
i understand more i have a few more question like that
Yes - have you checked our #learn-to-play yet? And the free rules? (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules)
For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
ok so pnj can need a 15 minimum in persuasion for it to work but another can have a 25 minimum ?
Yes, just like real life.
Si someone with 0 un persuasion could never influence à pnj with a minimum of 25
Correct. Since a maximum result for that character will be 20.
Same as other skills.
Yeah. Though usually DCs are set per check and contextual to what you’re trying to persuade for, not per individual
Now someone with 11+ he does 4 it work on a 15minimum
With +11 in persuasion, and roll a 4 on the d20, that character pass the Persuasion check if the DC is 15 or lower.
I Inderstand so much more
For example:
- Persuading a friendly NPC to give you a handshake probably wouldn’t even require a check and would just happen.
- Persuading them to lend you a few silver pieces might have a relatively low DC check
- Persuading a them to lie to a guard might have a relatively high DC
- Persuading them to take the fall for you might be impossible and would just not happen
In any case for DCs, or really any d20 Test, the heuristic is “meets it beats it”.
In other words, as long as your total is equal to or higher than the target number, you succeed to the best possible outcome
so doing 17 is the same than doing 31
Ok thx, also when you do a spell do you have to throw dices to know if you achieve to lunch it
That’s dependent on the spell
Each spell will have all the info you need on what it takes to cast it and what happens when you do. See here for the broad rundown of spellcasting:
and when you do an attaque in someone with an armor of like 16 defense. You have to do a role of dive >16
Your attack roll plus any bonuses and modifiers would need to meet (=16) or beat (>16) the targets Armor Class (AC)
So if you have +4 in force you can do 12 with your dices ?
If by “force” you mean your attack modifier then yes
If you have a +4 attack modifier and roll and 12 on your d20 attack roll, you hit the target if it’s AC is 16 or lower.
I mean strenght
But it can also be dexterity is that right
It depends if the weapon
Strength only applies to melee weapon attacks or finesse weapons, dexterity applies to finesse weapons or ranged weapons. If a character is a spell caster, they use their spell casting ability to determine their attack modifier. Proficiency bonus is another factor to affect attack modifier.
Ok, and so spells can do more damage? Like if you use charisma for spells and you +3 how does it works
Again it depends on the spell
Some spells involve a spell attack modifier, in which case it would work like an attack roll
And do spells have to bypass the armor too ?
If they involve an attack roll, yes
Some spells involve a save DC, in which case an affected creature has to make a saving throw versus your spell save DC
If you were a Charisma spellcaster your spell attack modifier would be:
- Proficiency bonus + Charisma modifier
And your spell save DC would be:
- 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Charisma modifier
What does that mean
Additionally, attack rolls have a special set of extra rules:
- If you roll a 1 on the d20 for an attack roll, it is a critical failure. A critical failure always misses regardless of what your roll total is.
- If you roll a 20 on the d20 for an attack roll, it is a critical hit. Critical hits always hit the target, regardless of the roll total. Additionally, your subsequent damage rolls double the number of dice (e.g. 1d10 —> 2d10; 4d6 —> 8d6).
As before, certain spells may require you to make a spell attack against the target. Others may require an enemy to succeed against your spell save DC
Ok ok and can there be spells that needs both ?
I believe there are a few that involve both, but I can’t remember any off the top of my head
In any case whatever a spell will require and do will be noted in the spell description
The link I provided earlier contains a bunch of different spells as well so you can take a look at examples
Yes. Some spells have an attack roll on initial target, then a save for secondary targets, like ice knife.
Or Bigby’s hand that can change from round to round depending on how you use it.
Thx
Last thing that I don’t understand, what does it mean when a weapon do like piercing damage or other like that
There are 13 different damage types in the game. Mainly the damage types will interact with creatures’ resistances, vulnerabilities, and immunities if they have any
Though some features will specifically boost certain damage types.
Damage types matter if the target has either resistance (take half damage), vulnerability (take double damge), or immunity (take no damage).
As an example of each:
- If you play a Tiefling, you have resistance to fire damage. If you were subjected to 10 fire damage, you’d only take 5 instead.
- A Magma Mephit monster has vulnerability to cold damage. If it were subjected to 10 cold damage, it would take 20 instead.
- An Air Elemental monster has immunity to poison damage. If it were subjected to 10 poison damage, it would take 0 instead.
Hello everyone it's nice to meet you all I'd love to get into DND
Wlecome! If you're new to D&D I'd recommend giving #learn-to-play a good read.
Also check out the pinned messages here in this channel.
Feel free to ask specific questions as you read/learn.
I am making my first character rn and I was wanting to be a ranger beast master. I know it chimes with being an archer and having an animal companion. Can anyone walk me through how to make that character, am I on the right track?
Ty! I’ll come back with questions lol
I've seen some things like VTT's how hard is it to make custom maps for?
Most VTTs are pretty easy to just upload an image background. Making maps within the VTT can be a whole different matter (map-making and map-displaying with tokens are two different things)
You're usually better off using a specific map making program or art tool to create your map, export as a flat image file, upload to the VTT and set that image as your map.
^
Mostly it can be as simple as drawing lines or as complicated as placing 3D assets one by one
Play a fun collaborative roleplaying game with friends
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel to help get you started with learning how to play D&D
Everythinggg
Lol sorry. I'm just having a little fun.
UndyingNoob linked you to the right channel to start. If you have more specific questions about how things work feel free to ask
How do spell classes work typically? I am thinking about making a character who has spells for the first time but I'm not sure what rules there are for spells to choose
Subclasses give your class additional features depending on the subclass you pick
Most notable example is cleric. You could be a healing cleric with life domain, a blaster cleric with light domain, etc etc
OH WAIT i misread it I am so sorry
So spell classes are more like glass cannon's that have a resource management with spell slots
Each spell casting class has their own different list of spells they can take, the amount they can prepare and the amount they can cast before needing to take a long rest
I have been looking at some spells my bard character can learn, but some are under the 'illusion' and there are some other categories
Am i able to just pick and mix between categories or is there some significance to them?
That's just the school of magic, thats not really important
You can mix and match yeah! There's no restrictions on what school of magic spells you can take
What is the purpose for schools of magic then?
It's meant to categorize spells by what they do
It's kinda like Skyrim spells how there's destruction, restoration, conjuration etc etc
ahhh cool okay thanks
Welcome new players to the best game you will ever play
Anyone have a link to join a campaign ? DD Beyond looking to join my first campaign
👋 I’ve played like once and I still don’t know what going on but it’s fun lmao

Not very helpful Noone there can’t chat in that server
That channel is not a typing channel. As the name suggests, it's an instruction set and directory on how to use this server to find a game.
@mystic lance give it some time and you will learn
Hiii I'm Felix, I'm pretty new to DND. I haven't played any actual irl games but I have drawn some ocs. I know the classes, most of the species, but I'd just like to know more about the stats and all that other stuff‼️
Hullo. I’m somewhat new to D&D. Been playing with some friends for a few months now and have even started up a much smaller campaign with some family with me acting as DM.
Welcome! For all the rules and stuff, there are the free basic rules that you can look at here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
If you'd rather prefer a pdf, there is one as well:

Hello I wanted to ask because I'm doubting myself now, is it possible to use a sword and a shield and then have the +2 bonus from the Dueling Feat?
or are shields considered weapons? I've been playing with a sword + shield & then getting a +2 from the Dueling feat, but my new DM says its not allowed as youre supposed to have a free hand. Is this true?
Yup, that works.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/sae/sage-advice-compendium#FeatDueling
Is the Dueling feat intended to support using a Shield?
**Yes. **A character with the Dueling feat can equip a Shield or hold a Spellcasting Focus or another object that isn’t a weapon in their other hand.
How do you play DnD? The rules and basics anyway.

Occasionally some feature will interact with a specific school of magic. Like the Evoker wizard subclass can choose to not damage allies with evocation spells (fireball and the like)
Also when you use magic detection type effects it will frequently let you know the school of a magical effect, so is this magical aura a protection, or something that will explode, or an illusion etc.
Ok thanks you
Can armor break ? Or have more resistance ?
Certain effects may degrade armor (rust monster feature for example) or add additional magical effects to armor (efreeti chain which gives magical fire resistance)
The thing cuasing the effect will detail the mechanical effects.
If a player as a 18 armor, it’s hard for a goblin to hit him no ?
Higher Armor Class means it is harder to hit that target with an attack roll
Spell effects with a saving throw though can still effect even the highest Armor Class
Or even non-magical area of effect damage with a saving throw.
18 AC is high for a low level character. But it likely just means this player has prioritized having a good ac, such as picking up a shield. Monsters will have a harder time hitting them with attacks for sure.
My players are level 5
Also, the effect like fire or cold, what does it to, more damage ? Or like the enemy takes a small damage every round after being on fire ?
Damage types are just damage types, there's no additional effect unless the feature that inflicts such damage says so.
For example, the spell Ray of Frost deals 1d8 cold damage on a hit and reduces the target's speed by 10 feet until the start of the caster's next turn. The speed reduction is a result of the spell and not the cold damage.
Even the fire damage type causing things to have ongoing burning is not assumed. As an example of an effect that does, see this wording from Fireball:
Flammable objects in the area that aren’t being worn or carried start burning.

What Deva said lol
Just wondering is it possible to play while traveling and like being at a restaurant with family or something cause of schedule if it's online DND?
Theoretically it is possible. In practice, you would want to clear it with the restaurant as they may not want people hanging around for 2-4 hours to play a game. Some locations are OK with it but if you do not clear it, you will want to have a backup plan in case you are removed.
You might also want to have a headset and use push to talk and or frequently mute yourself. The background noise will be rough on other players.
Short answer: No, not usually.
Long answer: Typically D&D games are on a set schedule decided on by the group. In my experience most games are one session per week, on X day and from Y-->Z time. If you aren't able to make the schedule you might be asked to drop out or should let the DM know beforehand to see if a resolution can be reached. Shorter game formats like One-Shots or text-based games (Play-By-Post, PBPs) are more convenient for people with inconsistent schedules.
There is a decent mutual expectation that everyone at a session is present and focused, at least w/o prior notification. So if you are at a restaurant with family and frequently get distracted talking to them & eating you have a fair chance at coming off as disrespectful. As Cal said, you may also run into issues IRL staying at a business for so long and in-game due to uncontrolled background noise.
If you end up having plans that fall on a day you have a D&D session (e.g. you have a family dinner), it's fine to not attend. Most people have an understanding that IRL events take priority over D&D, just be courteous and let them now ASAP that you cannot attend. As before, if you find yourself frequently needing to drop out of sessions you'll likely be better off finding a game more compatible with your schedule.
hi
Okay okay I think I understand now thank you both I understand when I can and somewhat what I can and whenever I can't
Also hi rajmond
hello! i am a massive newbie, and I've just been added to a campaign where everyone is already ~lvl 10. I've done my best to create the rogue crossbow sniper build I want to play, but I've been having a tough time making a lvl10 character from scratch, especially as it's my first time. could anyone help me out for a bit to make sure I've got everything right?
Remember to take game organizing to DMs or use #find-a-game ! Unfortunately soliciting games outside of the proper channels is against server rules
Rouge is pretty simple to play
I'm geusing u have free rules so u just go assasin
Also it might not show up but there's an optional steady aim thing u can use (it basically allows u to use your bonus action to give yourself advantage by making it so you can't moove)
If u need any more help I'm here
thankyou. everyone here is so helpful! great first impression to this server
This is incorrect. The free rules give the Thief subclass for free, not Assassin
I think it's asasin in 2024
Nope, it’s Thief in both 2014 and 2024
See here for the Rogue class page, which details Thief at the end:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Rogue
Yo
this is true, when i tried to use dnd beyond i could only choose thief
Steady Aim is also a default feature for 2024 Rogues. It was an optional feature in 2014 given by the book Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
awesomesauce
Hey I want to do my first campaign but I can't find people to do it with could some one help me get into one bc I am new
Check out #find-a-game
It contains instructions on using this server's channels for group finding
Trust the official book sources over an “anybody can edit” wiki generally.
I'm sad now my whole idea was a water genasi cleric that uses shape water on holy water to beat people with
You can work with your DM and group to see if a homebrew tweak to your character would be permitted. That said shape water isn’t really a damage spell and most groups wouldn’t allow it to be used as such.
Sad 😢
Could reflavor your weapon to describe it as a watery extension of your character.
That would be a bit easier to pass off
Thank you for helping me scheme
Mate I homebrewed my background and dm said yeah mate is fine
Depends on your source, actually.
Their legacy version from the Elemental Evil Player's Companion got Shape Water:
https://media.wizards.com/2016/downloads/DND/EE-Players-Companion.pdf
the Monsters of the Multiverse genasi doesn't get it anymore
I shall name the weapon the "Undying Holy Mace"
Backgrounds are much easier to customize since there are official guidelines for how to make them. Changing the functionality of a spell is a much bigger stretch of the rules
Definitely check with your group - most groups will try and work with you to achieve something that scratches your creative character concept but still is balanced for the game needs.
I think they get weapons weights up to mace cant remember havent looked back at my elven cleric in a yonk
Ik they were using a crossbow
I know mine is just a retextured hermit background
Bruh they thought acid splash makes more sense than shape water for a race made from water magic wtf
Fair enough
It has partially to do with the fact that Shape Water is an Elemental Evil only spell, never reprinted.
Idk what that means brother
It means it's from a specific source book, not the core rules.
