Oh so how much you knew about this game
Refamiliarizing yourself with the free basic rules (in the bot post above) is probably your best bet for getting back into DnD
Here are some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the video are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
I know a bit about the classes and how to make a chapter using DND beyond, but not too much else!
Ah I see I'll try that
Ooooo these are great ideas thank you!
Alright so you have to start reading free rules
And knowing about every character and spell
Ah spells for all classes? Or just clerk
No - just know enough about the core mechanics and game rules and whatever info/rules for making/running the character you want to use.
You have to choose class whats your type
But no need to memorize it. I 've been playing for years and I still mess stuff up and have to go back and read up on things.
That's okay
Same to me
It's all stuff
Clerk! Or at least that's what I used to play
Ah okay! Then I'll start with the rules and videos and stuff!!
Yeah that's great idea

Hey buddy do you know Arthur here
No?
Oh alright
I'm just a moderator
Cool
Ooooo making a group
Oh no! That's just the only time I've ever played, it was for a play and they had us all try it. I was in a club before, but all they did was have me make a character!
Hmm so you are looking for group and basic to play it
Yes!
Have you downloaded D&D beyond
Oh I didn't know it was an app, I've just been using the online one!
Alright you can access it through website no need to download it
It's both.

Welcome to the server! If you're new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel
Ty 😊
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them - here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide to see the many channels we have for specific D&D topics)
Didn’t realise there was sm to dnd, I’ve literally got a far as making a character now couldn’t tell you if I’ve done it right lol I’ve literally never met anyone else playing it so idk where to even start lol
How are you making your character sheet? Are you using DnDbeyond or filling in a PDF or doing it old-school pen and paper?
If you have a link to your sheet you can share it in #character-discussion and get community feedback.
Also I tried joining communities but their times of campaigns is literally in the am's
We don't allow game organizing/soliciting in the discussion channels - it's off-topic and will be moderated. But I'd focus less on timezones and more on "can I reasonably play in a 3-4 hour game at that time?" There are many groups playing D&D with folks from around the world where the timezone doesn't really matter. Only folks availability matters.
You could also look into Play By Post or text-based D&D games where it's more about just posting regularly, not about the specific time.
hallo
Does anyone know of any news if there will be updated creature cards
Nothing has been announced about them that I'm aware of
Hopefully, they didn't forget about them. I would like the new creatures as cards
yo guys
So, i already have a bit of experience with D&D, but i dont play for like.. 3 years, anybody can help me get started?

If I use dodge, and my opponent gets a natural 20 on first roll... do they have to roll again? Or they keep the 20?
They roll disadvantage so They need to roll 2 d20 and take the lowses
Even if you do take it,,,SOme how some way there is always a possibility of 2 nat 2o's
Also, if I got knocked out by damage, and I have to throw the death saving dices... can I use heal to bring someone back to the fight?
Yes; restoration of hit points (as long as it actually brings a character to 1 HP or higher) instantly brings a character back into action (this is why Healing Word is a very powerful spell; 1d4 may not seem like much, but even a turn or two that a character can still be in the battle can make all the difference)
If you are DM does a player need to know rules or is eniugh that DM knows the rules
Ideally everyone at the table knows the rules to some degree in order to keep the game moving along
If you're getting started, you can learn by playing with the DM helping you along, but eventually there comes a point where the players should learn the rules as well
Hi there! I'm new to D&D and excited to learn more about the game, its rules, and the lore. Can anyone recommend a good place to start? Thank you so much in advance! 😄
Well that helps XD
Thank you Dude.

@tiny basalt This might help a little bit. The Free Rules (linked in the bot post above) may seem intimidating, but what's important are chapter 1, chapter 2, and the parts of everything else you need for your character.
first and half time dm here, is it okay to combine session 0 and 1 together?
Session 0 should focus on setting gameplay expectations and boundaries and even expected schedule/frequency of play. This is to make sure folks know what's expected of them at the table and avoid problematic behavior and topics.
Generally that defeats some of the purpose of session 0, which is to serve as a buffer for getting the vibe of other players, setting expectations, etc
Depends on whether you're going to include character creation as part of your session 0 and how much time you have. But, in general, I'd keep them separate. (Rather like has already been said)
Having a gap between session 0 and 1 allows for people to ask questions, raise concerns, or gracefully duck out if they don't feel the campaign is a match
Beyond what UndyingNoob said, Session 0 can be reviewing code of conduct and character creation.
ah oke,i'll keep that in mind then, thanks!
session 0s also get a lot easier and usually faster if you happen to have a repeat group
so if you're talking about a session 0 with people you've played with frequently before, it's definetly possible that your gameplan might not be as intensive as compared to session 0 with a brand new group
as my buddy likes to say, "this session 0 could've been a email!"
At that point, session 0 tends to become group character creation.
are there robot constructs as races in d and d ?
The two closest things you get are the Autognome and the Warforged.
Check with a GM on using either of them, though, because they break vibes for a lot of people in certain settings.
More autognome than warforged, but yeah, those would be your two artificial life-form options.
is there a website where you can see all of them and make a character sheet
So only the SRD/free rules materials are freely available. Anything else would need to be purchased.
Here's the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
thankyou ❤️
And here's the list of official species in D&D (with a few third-party options), but like Noob said, only certain ones are freely available. https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
can u play as goblins too in dandd
They are a playable option, yes.
coool
Again, they aren't free, but they're possible.
I mean if the DM allows it you could play as any race though I would recommend sticking with the ones that are actual character options. But yes Goblins are an option.
Hello! I loved playing bd3 sm that I stumbled into DnD recently. I'm looking forward to join a newbie friendly session soon :3

hey so when I cast a spell as an artificer, am I rolling arcana? I'm looking at feats and they talk about Spellcasting ability as intelligence
(I am min maxing my character (lvl 1), looking at feats, we use homebrew a little bit)
Casting a spell does not typically involve making an ability check, so no you wouldn't have to roll arcana. When a class describes your spellcasting ability, that means that is the ability you use to determine what your spell attack bonus and spell save DC are
Did what I just said make sense? There was a lot of terms there, so I just want to check if you understand them or not
Where can I find a campaign?
DC = 8 + PB + Spellcasting ability mod. for an Artificer, that would be 8 + PB + INT mod. Attack bonus = PB + Ability mod.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
So as an artificer, I roll Intelligence, and (currently) my spell save DC would be 13. Do i need to roll a 13 to cast the spell?
Saves are generally rolled by the targeted character. The DC of that save would be determined by your ability mod.
So when I cast a spell, it just happens?
No. Spells just happen. You don't have to roll anything. A spell save DC means that if you cast a spell which targets the enemy and it forces them to make a saving throw, the number they have to beat is 13
Ah
Ok so:
when i cast a spell it just happens
when i use a spell that deals damage, on top of the dice I also add (at this point) 5 damage to it
when it specifies that they do that, if my spell targets an enemy, they need to beat a spell save dc of (currently) 13
is that all right?
Let's explain this using an example. Artificers can pick the spell Fire Bolt when picking spells. Let's assume you picked that one.
Fire Bolt says in its text:
You hurl a mote of fire at a creature or an object within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 Fire damage. A flammable object hit by this spell starts burning if it isn't being worn or carried.
In this case, the spell tells you if you need to do anything, which is to make a Spell Attack against a specific target. You calculate that spell attack roll by rolling a d20 and adding your Intelligence (because intelligence is your spellcasting ability as an Artificer) and your proficiency bonus.
And just like before, a spell tells you exactly what happens if you successfully hit with that spell attack roll: the target takes 1d10 fire damage (plus nothing, because the spell doesn't say to add anything else to the damage).
Second example: Acid Splash
You hurl a bubble of acid. Choose one or two creatures you can see within range. If you choose two, they must be within 5 feet of each other. A target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d6 acid damage.
You cast the spell. The target(s) make a Dexterity saving throw, with the DC currently 13 if you're casting it. If their d20 + DEX mod (+ PB, if applicable) is < 13, they take the acid damage. If it's >= 13, no damage is taken.
In the Acid Splash example above, there's no attack roll at all, simply because it doesn't say to make one. Instead, the opponent makes that saving throw.
Quick and dirty rule of thumb: a combat spell will either have you make an attack roll, or have the target(s) make a saving throw, but not both.
There are exceptions, but as Dosh beat me to typing, they're pretty rare.
The most important thing is to read the spell. It will tell you what it does and what you need to do to make it work
Some spells don't involve saving throws or attack rolls at all. Let's take Guidance, for a third example:
You touch a willing creature and choose a skill. Until the spell ends, the creature adds 1d4 to any ability check using the chosen skill.
If the creature you're targeting is willing, it just happens. If they're not willing, nothing happens at all.
There is a reason I said a "combat spell". I'd put Guidance into the bucket of "utility spells"
Hehe, fair enough
@dense stirrup : Related to that split of combat / utility - when you're starting out, a useful rule of thumb for your spells is "half combat, half utility"
Among combat spells, it's good to have a mix of attack spells and save spells. If you have sufficient choices (wizard, I'm looking at you), spreading out the abilities that the saves target is also a good idea.
ive got a player here with me just waiting cuz i scheduled the one-shot for rn but no one else showed up. I'd feel bad if i didnt get to run through it with them because I wasnt able to find people to come in.
You could look through #looking-for-dm and pick folks that appear to fit what you're looking for.
And in the future if you have any questions about the server rules, go to #moderator-support and simply state, "Can I speak with a moderator?" and a moderator can create a thread to discuss and clarify things.
alright ty

Is there like, a dnd standard character sheet I should use? And like, what are the rules for making a character
Here's the PDF version of the character sheet: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Some folks use DnDBeyond (web and/or mobile app) to create and manage their character sheets.
Some folks use a spreadsheet.
Some folks use a virtual tabletop (VTT) like Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, or Foundry to manage their characters.
It’s probably worth noting that this character sheet is for the 2024 version, and if your table is playing with the 2014 rules there’s a different one you should use.
D&D Beyond can help you get started. When it asks about ability scores, tell it you want to use standard array.
I have a funny idea for a rogue goblin type character
His whole strategy is sneaking up on enemies, stabbing them as many times as possible before they notice, and then just scurrying off into the shadows giggling
do ya'll think i can give my beginner friends a delicious in dungeon/black clover inspired campaign ?
also as far as i know thats the main idea of a rogue, the thief kind
Anyone have a game I could join
I remember saying I wouldn’t play BG3 because of it being semi turn based and look and me now, falling down the dnd rabbit hole and trying to get into dnd.
I know absolutely nothing about this game but want to learn, can someone help? I bought a few dice I think it's the right thing

Is it common for players to take notes during the campaign as you go? I'm new to DnD and my very first session a while ago involved me straight up not completely following what's happening half the time
Yes
Most DMs appreciate it
Very common
I c, and how reliable is rpgbot's guides on DnD? He writes optimization guides for the game but dunno what the general consensus is on his work
Optimisation is kinda beyond the scope of a newcomer topic. It's not something I'd worry about if you're new to the game
Hey guys! Glad I could join. I have played many games in my 30 years of living, but I regret never getting into DnD. I would love to start though, but I see many, many pieces of information floating about. I assume the videos of Handbook Helper are a good place to start?
Join what? If you're looking to join a game you'll want to check out #find-a-game
Glad I could join this Discord I mean
New to game any session available?
I'm sure there are, but here isn't the place to ask
You'll wanna check out #find-a-game
Ok
Optimisation can be really fun, personally i think starting with very "Generic" characters(aka no multiclass or whatever), not trying to go too crazy is really nice place to learn.
There is nothing stopping you from later optimising your character or make an optimised character if you want.
Oh no I'm not asking if optimization is a good idea or not, I'm asking if rpgbot is a good source to go off on
Best ask in #optimization
Sure I suppose

Hi so i want to make sure I understand correctly how 2 things work:
- How proficiencies of character are levled up? Do they all increase based on lvl table or is there a way to concentrate my lvl up to increase some specific one instead of others?
- What's the difference in calculation for DC Intelligence check VS DC Intelligence Nature check? Is there difference at all? Does it point to adding extra bonus from my Nature proficiency? Does Intelligence attribute bonus is used in every roll connected to Intelligence check?
Thank you :]
- Proficiency bonus increases based on your character level. There's a column in each class table that shows what your prof bonus is based on your level
- An Intelligence check is just a d20 roll + your intelligence modifier. An Intelligence (Nature) check is a d20 roll + your intelligence modifier + your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in the nature skill
Also It's not called a "DC Intelligence check", it's just an intelligence check. DC means "Difficulty Class" and is the number that an ability check must beat. For example "Can you give me an intelligence; religion ability check, the DC is 15"
I have a tabaxi idea
A tabaxi fighter who hates armour
Like they have a full on physical hatred of armour
Cat do hate when you put clothes on them
Like the full on can’t act or do anything other than light or some types of medium
The party forces an armor on them abd they just do the cat flop refusing to move thing (:
That's diluting the concept a bit, don't you think?
Run with the original idea. Monk or barbarian get you unarmoured defence. Plenty of ways to get mage armour.
No I like the idea that they want strong armour but can’t wear it so are adventuring to find someone that can humour the idea
That is a bit of a gamble
Because everyone would have to "humour" the idea, otherwise it's just you intentionally playing a class poorly
That's the main issue with these joke/concept/against type ideas; if they don't land with the table, they can easily disrupt the whole game. Generally it's assumed everyone at the table is playing a character who wants to be good at what they do, not bad at it
They’d probably end up a battle master fighter as they’ve had to find was around their main weakness of the inability to wear heavier armour due to sensory feedback
there is also the characters that "think" they're a different class than they are. that is less disruptive
They know they aren’t doing their class well but if they do they don’t work as a class
They have physically tried to be stronger but they end up hating it
Now I'm not saying this is your intent but this sounds like the mentality of "attention through disruption". It's where someone draws focus and attention onto themselves not through being good at something and contributing to the experience, but by being bad at something and detracting from it. If you're in the UK, it's known as the "Christmas Cracker Joke" effect; it's easier to stand out from being bad at something than being good at something, it takes less effort
I would recommend against this character idea, it's coming across as contrary to the goals of D&D as a collaborative experience
If you wanna persist with the idea, #character-discussion might be the best place to discuss it I guess
Is there any ways to roll DMG with advantage(two times for better number). I know there is Attack rolls with advantage, but is there DMG rolls with advantage? How to do them and when? Does it connect to Attack roll advantage in any way?
Thank you :]
Afaik there is no 'advantage', but there is "reroll and take the new result", such as with the sorcerers Empowered Spell metamagic.
And heroic inspiration, of course.
Yk people say base your first character on yourself I may end up having a useless character
A glasses wearing
Dyspraxic
Ranger/monk/artificer
that’s hypermobile
Instead, just try to draw inspiration from places that help
Or just lean into a trope or stereotype if you're new, nothing wrong with that
I was thinking of doing a tabaxi monk/wizard
I would advise against multiclassing for your first character
Does monk get fire spells?
Play what's fun for you but also adds fun to the entire table. Usually that means a character that is decent at their role but may need to rely on other members of the party for areas they are not so great at.
Some monk subclasses gain abilities to cast certain spells. The warrior of the elements monk subclass in the 2024 Players Handbook can use their Focus Points to cast elemental bursts that can include fire damage.
Ascendant dragon monk can fire punch
Its not a fire punch its a fireball
What class and sub class both can do magic and suffer the least from being horrible at doing magic
I second UndyingNoob’s Elemental Monk suggestion then. You won’t literally be casting the Fireball spell but the level 6 Elemental Burst ability is close enough
Do i still get flurry of blows?
Probably either Eldritch Knight Fighter or Arcane Trickster Rogue, since you’ll have the base Fighter or Rogue kit. Though that begs the question of why you want magic in the first place.
Yes, Flurry of Blows is a base Monk feature
Ok
I want to play a character that wanted to be a mage but sucked so badly at it they changed careers
You can just have the mage part be part of your backstory, no reason to pick a mechanical option you don’t plan to use
Each spellcasting class also has a couple of options for spells that don't involve saving throws or attack rolls, typically spells that buff their allies or heal. So if you happen to have a bad spellcasting score for whatever reason, those are a good backup.
I can do that monk idea
But for Physicals attacs with weapons, there is no DMG advantage possibility yes?
No - advanatge/disadvantage is only for D20 tests (attack rolls/skill checks/saving throws)
Damage is just normal damage rolls (exception being critical hits which double the damage dice rolled)
Thanks :] so no OP Assassin moments, just your regular cool combos 😄
Im searching out rare cool scenarios - combos. I will probably never do it but it is nice to know that my char is technically capable to do some crazy things.
Magical weapons, spell effects, and class features are usually the way you can add more dice and damage types to your attack's damage rolls.
They're both decent places to start, but are now very slightly outdated. They were written based on the 2014 publication of the core rulebooks. A new "polish" of the rules has just finished releasing, which is still about 90% the same while taking some rough edges off and giving things a new coat of paint.
Hello! Quick Question... is a Goliath Wizard and Sage background like a good idea or the high elf as the safer bet?
The big pictures ideas would still be the same, but some of the details might not specifically apply anymore.
So getting the 2024 rulebook or focussing on that at least would be your advice?
With the most recent publication of the rules, ability score adjustments come from background and not species, so knock yourself out.
If you’re just starting out now I think there’s zero reason to default to a version no longer being supported
Okay gotcha!
Unless you're joining an established group that's sticking to the 2014 publication, anyway.
Yeah I have no prior knowledge whatsoever
I’d highly advise investing in the 2024 books first
cool, thanks ill give it try as the big guy then
They’re far better laid out and more beginner friendly
Book(s) as in plural?
As a player, you'd only need the Player's Handbook. If you step into running the game, the Monster Manual & Dungeon Master's Guide.
But, long-time players will tend to talk about those three as a set.
If you don't intend to DM, the DMG may still be worth your time tho
I will look into them
Don't read the MM if you don't intend to DM because you'll just spoil yourself by knowing what monsters do when your DM throws them at you
That said, all you need are the free rules, which are free on DnD Beyond
Ditto: the Free Rules will get you playing. If you want more options for making your character and/or want to invest fully in the hobby, then grabbing the Player’s Handbook is the logical next step.
In decending priority: Free rules, PHB, DMG, MM (avoid if you don't want to DM), big sourcebooks like Tasha's or MOTM
Hey
one more... hopefully just one haha As a Sage and Wizard, is that 3 cantrips or 5? I'm a bit confused
You get 2 cantrips and 1 first-level spell from the background, plus 3 more cantrips and six more level 1 spells from being a wizard.
Aren't the spells technically from the magic initiate feat (just to be precise 😉 )
I guess the background gives the feat but that honestly confused me at first
yeah, I almost phrased it that way. Then decided the clarity to the person I was replying to would not have been increased given the phrasing of their questions.
Yikes. I don't think I've ever heard that before.
My character would be prone to falling
Bounce off walls
Drop almost everything
Lets stop with the self deprication and stay on topic for learning the basics of D&D, please
Thanks! Also… niceeee Haha so magic here is like elden ring a bit of like easy mode or are they preparing us for like… u know, elden ring bosses haha or depends on the dm from what i read a bit
I'm looking to get into DnD after being interested for quite a while. However i will hold my hands up and say i haven't looked at handbook or anything like that, i am more of on the go learner rather than reading my knowledge. But would it be advisable to read handbook first or is there likely to be groups to allow a party member like me in?
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you will have a much better experience with the game if you take some time to learn at least the basics of the rules before you start playing. At the very least, you will need a character before the game starts, so learning the rules on Character Creation is basically mandatory. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
Yeah i have some knowledge in regards to basics and stuff, but seeing other games being played on YT etc there is some stuff that i do struggle to take in just by listening if you know what i mean 🙂 But thats cool, just wasn't sure on like "entry expectations"
You can start with the free rules (check pinned message here in the channel) and check YouTube and Twitch for D&D streams to watch as you read. Do note that many D&D streams are for entertainment first so don't fully rely on them to teach you the rules. But they can still be good guides for how to manage an run the game and give you ideas of how others play D&D.
quick question i have my first ever session starting on sunday would anyone like to helo my practice. maybe you play DM while i talk in character, so i can understand the interactions a little bit better
You might be able to find a one-shot game on one of the D&D servers advertising their community in #looking-for-community
That can get you some quick experience
Sooooo can someone explain too me how I can get involved in joining a dnd group within this discord 👁️👄👁️

So just basically when doing basic rules, its: Decription> Players action> Action Rolls > Outcome > Repeat right?
just like for beginner level Dm
Yes
It’s not quite as much of a flow chart as you make it seem. That is more or less the correct sequence of events most of the time, but that’s usually because that’s just what makes sense for how things should happen, rather than there being a strict order of operations
Ya, that's just basic rules.
True, by reading the book there's more to it than that, but I don't want it make hard for myself as a beginner. I just need practice and the more I do the more things I can add to the events. Cause right now, Im procrastinating about doing it. I just got to do it now or never lol
Lol I feel the same half of the time as a dm
Hello everyone,
Im a player wanting to become a dm and i set up a campaign but i dont know how to post a looking for players post. Can anyone help me?
You read #find-a-game carefully.
Then in any channel you can type in, start typing /looking-for then select the players option.
The bot will give you a form to fill out. Once submitted the bot will create a post in the #looking-for-players channel and attach a thread to it.
Use the thread to provide any updates/corrections and discuss the game opportunity to folks interested.
Please make sure to follow server rules when submitting your form (games must be for D&D which means players can jopin an play using characters created from the free rules or from an official D&D book, don't ask for folks personally identifying information like exact age or email, etc.)
With Dnd digital PHB 2024 bought on DnD, can we do a digital character sheet on dnd with races such as Kobold or Aarakocra ?
If you're asking about D&D Beyond, #ddb-support can help. For another site, you could try asking in #third-party.
But it's worth nothing that neither of those races are in the PHB.
Whatever site you're using, you'll probably need to get Monsters of the Multiverse instead.
hey hi, any way I could find a background that would give me the fey-touched feat at lvl1? I am a half-elf artificer. If possible I do not want it to be like I spent most of my life there, rather enough that my time in the feywild was long enough to have lasting effects on me as a person
homebrew is ok
None of the official background grant general feats.
An origin feat like magic initiate is pretty close to Fey Touched mechanically, but general feats are intended to be taken at level 4 or higher.
Yeah, Magic Initiate is the "more spells" choice at level 1, and you could certainly pick and choose spells that help reinforce that narrative.
What are abilities spells that can ADD to proficiency score when you roll a dice, and how much they add :]
Egz.: Bardic inspiration can buff anything. from 6-12 bonus points.
Im looking multi pourpouse abilities and spells and anything that can be stacked
If sspecificly then stacked on Inteligence nature check
Bardic Inspiration doesn't use anyone's proficiency bonus.
It has a die of its own that you roll, which gives a bonus of 1-6 at your lowest level, and 1-12 at the highest.
But it can indeed be used to boost a Nature check.
Aside from just leveling up, there is 1 singular feature in the game that can increase someone's proficiency bonus. It is a legendary tier magic item called the Ioun Stone of Mastery.
Spells like Guidance and other class features like Flash of Genius can also boost Nature checks.
Yes I need these temporary buffs :] thank you :]
Druids who choose Magician for their Primal Order also get a boost there.
The folks in #optimization probably know some other options for it.
(That channel can be intense, though, especially if you're new to the rules.)
Thats enough im just balancing a Home Brew as a total noob :DD i dont need to push absolute maximums
There are LOTS of ways to increase your total for a D20 test. Pretty much every class in the game has 1 or two ways to do it. Its only if you specifically want to increase your proficiency bonus specifically that things get far more limiting
I would HIGHLY recommend that you avoid using or making homebrew until you get more familiar with the game. That's like designing a balance patch for a video game before you've played it, or modifying a car before you've driven it
I've driven plenty of cars and still wouldn't try to modify one.
I know what I got involved in, but also I found out that I like this process much more than game itself ;] And my character needs this Home brew to function as intended.
Im happily burned out :]
hey what is a bard exactly ?
A bard is someone that manifest magic through artistic expression. Words, dance, music, etc
Are they a spellcaster type ?
yes
High-level bards get the broadest selection of spells in the game.
Thanks for clarification. Honestly I think I do mistake between classes. Like what is the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer
Wizard is someone who learns magic through study and research. Like a scientist learning more about the properties of magic and then applying them to the real world. A sorcerer is someone who has magic innately within them. They are naturally gifted with magic and manifest it through their own willpower
Huh intersting. I heard artificer are kinda like wizards with more technological theam
Artificers specialize in the imbuing magic into objects, and creating physical items with magical propeties
I think it is one again time for my Google Spreadsheet of pop culture characters as D&D subclasses.
Aww, you have Neal Caffrey on there!
Dang skippy I have Neal Caffrey on there.
Can you tell which classes I don't play/play with much? 🙂

Okay cool! Thanks, I’ll take a look !
I consider myself a newbie. I've played a few online sessions before with some school mates couple years back, but I'm not really well versed and i want to get into it more
I don't remember much at all from the sessions unfortunately.
I was about to ask how were the games u played!
Seems like you need to be part of pre existing group/community
Lol. I know i definitely had fun. Recently found some sketches of my old character.
Yeah that would make sense
And some of other characters that I think were in our party or at least liked
Say more that finding or assembling a group is the biggest challenge. Particularly because in modern times, GMs are less likely to take a random group of internet strangers without some level of vetting.
Yeah seems kinda hard to get into as a solo ngl 😅
I know this answer isn't for everyone, but joining a paid game will usually get you in the quickest.
How come?
Less competition for seats, primarily.
I see
The monthly Virtual D&D Weekends are like $20 for a session.

as a paladin at lvl 1 using old dnd rules am i allowed to prepare spells if i can how many can i
if im lvl 3 can i multiclass? like go 1 lvl there and 1 lvl there and so on, whats the requirement to multiclass?
The main requirements outside DM maybe not wanting to do it is your ability scores
You need 13 in all the relevant ability scores of both classes
So if you wanted to MC Paladin and Rogue for whatever reason, that's 13 STR, 13 DEX, and 13 CHA
I have my first session on Tuesday and am nervous any advice would be appreciated.
You're playing a game of make believe that occasionally uses dice rolls to add some randomness and the point of it is to have fun with friends telling a story together.
There may be dragons. And even dungeons. But the point is to have fun.
Focus on having fun and helping others to have fun to.
Hey yall, can anyone help me learn how to play this game? Always watched it lightly and wanted to get into it but never understood how to. I’m a quick learner and a huge nerd so if anyone could help I’d appreciate it.

Is it possible to solo an adventure with out it being a solo adventure
D&D isn't really designed for solo play (although folks have created tools to make it possible).
D&D is more designed for 1 Dungeon Master and a party of 3-6 players
If I wanted to make a character (new player) to join someone’s game, where do I start on D&D beyond? There’s so many options
You can create a character here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
“Standard” is basically the default option, where you make every choice yourself.
There’s a box there you can click to show help text before you start, and it’ll walk you through the process.
It’s gonna start with a bunch of settings first. Unless your DM has told you to change any of them, I’d recommend just leaving them as-is and starting on the next page where you pick your class.
Any recommendations on a race and or class?
Depends. What kind of character are you interested in?
There’s a good article here that goes over the basics of each class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
Probably a lone wanderer who can survive on his own but also can adapt into any group he’s put into.
Ranger
Weave together martial prowess, nature magic, and survival skills
Far from bustling cities, amid the trees of trackless forests and across wide plains, Rangers keep their unending watch in the wilderness. Rangers learn to track their quarry as a predator does, moving stealthily through the wilds and hiding themselves in brush and rubble.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 14
Cha. 10
Likes: Survival
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
But you could really make any class work with that idea.
Ok I’ll try it out, was thinking rouge maybe too.
Yeah, a rogue would work, too.
What I generally recommend is to come up with a couple loose ideas for characters.
So you could try making one of each to get a feel for them.
Then you can work with your group to find the best fit and add any finishing details.
I just bought BG3 so hopefully it’ll help me get into/understand D&D more
Yeah, it’s great!
It changes a few of the rules to make it work better as a video game, but it’s still a great introduction to the basics.

Hey I’ve been wanting to play dnd for years and I’ve never gotten the chance to play with any friends and am looking for my first campaign!!!!
there ye go
I’ve been wanting to learn and play too!! But I feel like I have so much to learn lol
Same but I know playing will teach me and let me figure out how I like to the game truly I just got a bunch of ideas ready to try them
Hi to anyone that reads this 😄 I’m new so I’ll probably be slow 😂
That’s sounds cool, got ideas going and everything, I feel like I’m completely new. Started getting into it cause of 3d printing and wanting to paint but now I want to actually learn and play with a group
Hell yeah, my friend got me into but I never got to play a game with him just watched it and I’ve been ready to play but never have a group so anyone that has a group I’m ready to go
That’s sick, hopefully I can join a group willing to teach me 😭 😂
Same 🥲🥲
Hello I’m new
I think a few of the 2024 changes are inspired by BG3’s rule changes ironically
Like potions now being a bonus action instead of a full action
Welcome by the way ^^
Thnx

Hello new guy here

Howdy, welcome
Idk how to play but sometime today I’m going to build my character can anyone help me
Someone recommended to me, as a new player, to look into Baldur's Gate 3 for example. He said it's not exactly the same, but the concepts are similar. Do you guys reckon this is a good way for a more practical introduction for someone who doesn't have a local DnD group and someone who has 0 experience?
I think it’s okay to enjoy it for what it is, so long as you can acknowledge it’s not actually D&D
It’s based off D&D, but it’s not D&D, if you get what I mean
I get what you mean. They just recommended it to me to get more acquainted with all the rolling and stats and stuff.
Rolling stats is mostly automated in BG3, in the actual game it’s a more complicated process. Though character customisation etc, that’s pretty much identical
Gotcha gotcha, well the whole rolling part is still a big learning thing for me, so I will think about it
In the game itself you roll 4d6, cancel the lowest one and add the other three together, then do that another 5 times and you’ve got your ability scores
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
I have to memorise that command haha
Anyway yea all three are valid, tho honestly the overwhelming majority of DM’s/players I know use the random generation one
Yeah almost 4d6 drop the lowest
Oh i misspoke apologies
No worries
Yeah my friend mentioned that yesterday as well. I didn't really understand why it's 4d6, lose the lowest and do it another 5 times. But I suppose that's just the rule basically haha
Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
But that's only one of 3 ways you can generate your ability scores.
Standard array is pretty good one to start with if you don't have a group to play with yet
I know but I was trying to find the reasoning behind it 😅
But maybe there is no reasoning and it's just the rule, that's what I mean
Thanks for the info!
Maths rocks go clacky clack.
I also agree - standard array first. Learn where to put your high and low scores to make an effective character.
The 2024 PHB tells you directly where you should be sinking your high stats relevant to your class if you want a meta build
It’s pretty helpful in that regard
I've got a simple notion.
- Spellcaster: casting stat.
- Melee focus: Strength or Dexterity.
- Ranged: Dexterity.
- If you've got a feature like unarmoured defence, whatever that says.
- Minimum of 10 in Constitution, rock on.
And keep an eye out for your planned subclass, like the rogue swashbuckler that can get a boost off of Charisma.
I am new to D&D. Question: DO I need to learn a lot of rules and laws to roleplay?
The most important things to know at first is the core game mechanics, how to create a character sheet, and how to use the features of your character.

Hello everyone!
I apologize as i am sure this has been asked a million times already, but i have greatly enjoyed my time playing with baldurs gate 3 and want to finally give playing D&D a try, i have read most links available here, but i wanted to ask, is there a website that can help me visually make my character? and is half-drow an allowed race?
Another thing is i've been keeping at eye out in the #looking-for-players channel is, if there is a specific tag or word that means newbies are allowed to join? and by newbies i mean new to DND but have played baldurs gate? i am quite nervous to ask in the available threads as i don't want to waste the time of the people posting, and i am not even sure if asking if they allow newbies in their adventure game is rude i am probably just overthinking but hopefully someone can give me a bit of insight
Welcome! To visually create your character you might try Heroforge or Picrew to create a visual for them.
There isn't a thing called a half-druid (druid is a class, not a race/species)
As for new-player friendly games, folks will say "new player friendly" if they indicate it at all.
Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as that player has and is making efforts to learn.
apologies for this, what i meant is half-drow, is that a thing that is allowed?
Oh half-drow - I totally misread that!
no worries i just edited it as well when you mentioned it! ❤️
You can - half races though are now a "pick the species features you want" and then just describe your character as a multi-racial/species.
So you could take the drow species/race and then describe yourself as whatever multi-racial race/species you want.
So let's say you wanted to be from a drow/dragonborn heritage. Pick one of the species with the features you want (drow) but then now you can describe your character as "a slightly bulkier than average drow with flecks of golden scales around their neck and arms." But mechanically sue the dorw stats.
oh wow i need to read up on this as i'm used to the baldur's gate 3 terms, thank you for pointing it out.
I do like that better though, i can present my character as a half-drow/elf while picking and choosing traits i like that shows each side
i just use bg3 as a sims 4 nowadays, cannot finish a game for the life of me
thank you so much for that idea and that is exactly what ill probably do, i love the idea of a holy elf raised by drows, thank you!
Since you appear to be BG3 enjoyers, we do have a channel for that as well: #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
i agree 100%, i have over 400 hours of gameplay since i bought it on sale during the christmas holidays, i haven't even finished act 2 yet!
hop on kingdom come deliverance 2 if that genre is your fancy. i wasted several hours of my life doing everything but the main quest, it was so good.
also your pfp and name is insane. keep it up
thank you for this recommendation! ill surely keep that in mind, apologies for the mods as we've dived into out of topics!
thank you undying for the help ❤️

noted on this thank you!
If i make my character's known language as elvish does it incorporate the language of both drows and elves?
Yes. Drows speak elvish, same as other elves. One may imagine that they have a specific accent, but the game doesn't usually bother with such matters.
okay thank you!
I am currently at the dndbeyond website and making my character, i have now reached the part where it says Suggested Characteristics and it seems to have a 1d8 traits, 1d6 ideals, etc. Do i have to roll a dice? or am i allowed to choose what personality traits, ideals, bonds, etc that fits my character? i was hoping to genuinely make my character and not make a dice roll to determine them
Those are just suggested options by the way - you can work with your Dungeon Master to make something unique and specific for your character, or you can roll the dice and pick that way, or you can just pick the ones that make the most sense.
okay thank you! hopefully i can finish this character so i can start applying on #looking-for-players
Be prepared to make some tweaks to ensure your character fits the game/campaign vibe and works well with the rest of the players in the group.
Oh, also, worth noting, something you may want to speak about with your DM! In previous editions, drows also made extensive use sign language, mostly in order to attack their enemies silently.
It is unlikely to be useful to you or your character but if you enjoy that flavor, maybe talk about it with your DM
absolutely, i am taking my time as well because having words to describe my character feels new, i am so used to visuall making my character in bg3 that now that i have to rely on words to tell other people what my character is, is both confusing but very exciting.
wow that is so cool! i forgot that drows are usually assassins/theives, so sign-language makes sense to overwhelm enemies with on-the-go silent planning, my character however is a cleric with a dark past, i hope i can learn how to integrate sign-language in a cleric gameplay
Currently stuck at the faith portion of the character creation, what are common faiths that are believed by elfs/drows? i only know shar/selune from bg3 and i am not even sure if those are counted as faiths
Ah, a complicated matter. I can give you the short version here, or the long version in #dnd-lore as you prefer.
Hmm what would you recommend for a half-drow/elf raised by kind drows? i imagine my character to be neutral good, quite empathetic, taking the feelings and emotions of other people into consideration first before himself?
Half-drow, half what?
You can leave it black keep your backstory vague until you find a game
Do you mean one drow parent, one wood elf, high elf, sea elf, eladrin or shadar-kai parent? One drow parent, one human parent?
Not ever DM runs 100% lore accurate tables
hmm like a drow and an elf parent? i am sorry if what im saying is confusing
Alright, so it is important to remember that drows are elves. When you say "elf", that includes drows.
now i am confused too, but yes, in my head i am imagining a character who is like shadow-heart, a high-elf, but instead of just half-elf she is half-drow? like a mixture of drow and elf coming from one drow parent, and an elf parent something like that?
But you obviously mean a non-drow elf as the other parent.
oh! i did not know that!
no wonder that was so confusing!
Shadowheart is simply half-elf. Her parents were also half-elves, I believe.
so i guess my character is a half elf/human then
but the elf part is a drow? would that make more sense?
That works
Yes, absolutely makes sense.
dang this is why im so happy i joined here, i would have totally jumbled those two
It can be confusing, do not worry, you are not any dumber than anyone. I'm pretty sure I barely understood most of this stuff when I started
I wonder what faith would fit that character well? i also chose the haunted one background, i really love the idea of a cleric who cannot let go of something traumatic that happened to him in his past, muddling his abilities to properly heal
Anyways, on the matter of faith, since you are building a cleric, in the Forgotten Realms setting I assume, you probably want to see which domain interests you most.
i understand, i've taken note of this too, for now though i am making this character as a practice run and will be changing it to fit the lore of the DM.
Someone haunted by a deep pain could turn towards Ilmater, in the Forgotten Realms setting. God of perservance and martyrdom, whose symbol is a bleeding hand. Absolves others and takes their suffering onto himself.
By domains, you mean the domains in the bg3? like trickery, arcana, etc?
Yes. Domains are subclasses for clerics. Every god comes with a few suggested domains.
thank you sire! reading this really resonated with me, i think this is the one i want for my character!
There are more subclasses in D&D than in BG3, it is worth noting.
Damn, first one that came to mind. Am I good or what?
Very good indeed haha thank you sire!
What domain would someone who worships ilmater fit the most?
The suggested domains for Ilmater are life and twilight. But any will work as long as you can make it work for your character.
Life is for healers, twilight is... Hard to describe and has often been mentioned as being very powerful to the point of being unbalanced.
no way.. i was about to type that life and twilight resonated with me the most, literal goosebumps!
This is a bit uncanny.
There is no Vc in this server?
Nope
I gotta get someone to go over my planned campaign with me before i run it, all my friends are players so i cant go to them lol im a bit stuck
You can describe your issues in #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building and have other DMs provide feedback. But no VC on this server.
could a character who prays to ilmater, but have the flaw of being able to talk to spirits, be allowed to study the organization of Kelemvor's doomguides? seeing as this character is very compassionate, he might be interested in using his flaw to aid people who are afraid death? or that wouldnt make much sense? asking to get an idea if it is normal for characters in dnd to study/practice/believe in multiple religions and/or organizations.
Talkin to spirits is not a flaw exacty. Just about everyone can do that.
But this is more of a matter for dnd lore. The short answer is that it is entirely possible for one cult to allow members of an ally cult to study their ways.
oh i thought it was a specific flaw that only a few has, but it makes total sense that everyone can speak to spirits, maybe i'll just add flavors to that flaw i chose and make it so that the spirits he can talk to are only spirits who died tragically, not sure though
In D&D, ghosts and other related undead are just kind of...There. They tend to be able to phase between the material and the ethereal plane but once you see them you can talk to them.
It's not a guarantee that they will answer though.
But it will depend on how your DM wants to play it
now im starting to understand why people often say that it could take hours to make your character
At first, when you hesitate on everything, it does. Once you get the hang of it, spending more than 10 to 15 minutes on a first level character is rare

In more details: You read the basic rules, maybe the player's handbook if you're ambitious, then you get a group and you make a character.
Oh, also, be careful about putting too much backstory in your character
It is, in my experience, better to go for short but meaningful.
yep, most of this are for personal use, the last thing i want is an overly dramatized character and make everyone feel bored/annoyed
for now i am making a basis of my character just so that when i do try out entering a DND campaign, i have a well-thought base character that i can edit to fit the themes of the DM, but thank you for reminding me, my sister warned me about that too
Thank you guys for all the insightful advices! i have finally finished making my first ever DND character! super excited to learn how to morph this base character to fit the themes of different DMs. Genuinely so excited!

This may seem like a stupid question but i am pretty new to dnd, my party wil be fighting manus at the end of the campaign but his AC is 22. They have a +3 proficiency, how wil they ever beat them if they need 19 minimal?
Is there a other way to get higher roles?
Manus, as in, the Dark Souls guy?
Anyway, proficiency is only half of the attack calculation. It's
d20 + Ability Mod (usually STR or DEX) + prof
In addition, a nat20 always hits, regardless of modifier.
AC 22 is very high though, fairly unusual for monsters unless you're talking CR 15+
Thank you!, yeah i found a stat block with al his abilities for dnd
You can look through the Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game for more information
You may want to ask those questions in #dm-discussion in the future. Maybe #dnd-discussion, depending.
hey so im just getting started with me and a couple of buddies and im having trouble trying to make a character

i was trying to make a character online using beyond but some of the selections dont have explanations
Ah gotcha. What part do you have questions about?
what do the tools do? and proficiency?
Thieves tools let you lockpick profienciny means you can use them good
okay so if i build like cleric the insight would just give me like bonuses then
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
Yes you would add your proficiency bonus to your insight skill's modifier (which stems from your ability score modifiers)
Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
okay and tools are just up for interpretation? for example smiths tools would give me like a hammer and maybe an anvil?
Yes, you could flavour them however you like
But in general, it would have the standard items like a hammer, tongs and maybe a small anvil. A larger more standard anvil would be something you could buy.
okay i get it now
last one for now then imma go to character discussion. so proficiency adds a bonus to skills checks, is it like a +1 or something? where do i find that information for example history or acrobatics. is based on level or something?
Check the class table for your selected class
That will list your proficiency bonus for your given overall character level
Your profiency will increase as you level and can be found in the class information
okay thanks for everything, im going to go try and make the class now
Hey, so I’m wondering if any dms can put their opinions out for my situation.
I’m in my first ever campaign right now playing a rogue lvl 4 ranger lvl 1
My dm wants to nerf my character to make it where I can’t benifit from steady aim and hunters mark meaning the hunters mark proc won’t go off even if I have it on the character I shoot, this frustrates me because I’m unable to use the character I worked hard on building, this character also was not allowed to double sneak attack damage when I critted last session. I didn’t push because I didn’t want the party or the game to worsen because of opposing viewpoints
You couldn't activate them on the same turn but if you cat hunters mark on one turn, and then steady aimed on the second, it would be okay
And yes, you do get double sneak attack damage when you crit, at least with 2014 rules. I'm not sure if that has changed
Yeah the way he made it sound he wants to make it where I can’t benifit from a character with hunters mark, he has read the rules and agreed with me, he thinks it makes my character to strong. Same with the sneak attack being doubled.
Some DMs can get a little overwhelmed with the single target damage output of rogues at early levels but it tones town as you increase in level.
Still the same. And apparently still the same with DMs feeling like it's op. It's really not.
Yea it always seems OP but then you see a wizard at level 5 flinging fireballs and it's less of a big deal
Yeah I understand that I just felt like my character was the only one being nerfed at table just for doing high damage but I feel like if he takes away my ability to sneak attack most turns or the whole reason I multi classed into rogue that my character who already is the squishiest will and do the least dpr, I’m also the only spellcaster and was told I can’t cast 2 spells in the same turn even if one’s bonus and ones a action
the spell part is true..
It's worth a review of the rules and a discussion
Well that last one might be true depending on which version of 5e you're playing and which spells were involved.
for the most part
I think the spells involved were hunters mark and fog cloud
I think part of what makes rogues feel strong for particularly new DMs is that there is a tendency to have one boss monster solo the party. Which really just begs for all those characters that have burst potential, like the rogue and paladin, to unload their special moves on it.
It gets much less crazy if you do proper encounter design.
Hey where can I find the looking for group dms?
Check out #find-a-game
You can only concentrate on one spell at a time but you can steady aim while using hunters mark since one is a spell and the other is feature
Just couldn't activate both in the same round
What about like hail of thorns and dreadful strike
Then it wouldn't work in any version of 5e. 2014 because casting a 1+ bonus action spell stops you from casting a 1+ main action spell and in 2024 because you can't cast two spells with a spell slot per turn.
Ah I see
I just felt like there was a lot of stuff done to lower my character to make him well weaker than the rest of the party
Sometimes people get stuck on certain incorrect rules interactions. I recommend making sure you understand all the relevant rules, trying to explain the parts that they got wrong, and if that doesn't work you'll need to decide if it's worth it or see if they'll let you rebuild your character
I'd have a talk with your DM about rules and balancing and how it feels when they overwrite a core part of the rules. It hurts consistency and can impact fun.
And if you are unhappy, you do not have to stay. It sucks but it's not great to stay at a table when you are not having fun.
Yeah he agreed with the rules I brought up just that my character deals too much damage
And to be clear this isn't an argument for "uh this is technically how the rules work so therefore [exploit]", this is fundamentally how sneak attack and crits interact. It's literally an example in the crit section.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#CriticalHits
Then that leads to the later options I mentioned.
I have a DM I just won't play certain characters with because he refuses to believe that you can sneak attack with booming blade
If your DM isn't running rogues correctly and won't change it, you'll have decide if you want to continue and/or whether you can rebuild to something he runs properly
Yea, as me and Deva said, Rogues often get targeted for nerfs at early levels because they appear to be overpowered but they really aren't. It can be very frustrating but it happens.
Yeah to me it’s more of the fact that it feels like he’s doing stuff mid game because my character is strong that he won’t do the same for my new character
“Who’s to say he won’t do the same for my new character”
I'd bring that up pretty much as how you've said it here with your DM.
Trust is a core part of the experience. If you can't trust, why bother?
That’s sounds good, I appreciate your guys help very much.
I just don’t want it to put a strain on our table, I do also work with a couple people and I wouldn’t want it to affect work.
That's fair. But it's always good to remember that while you can't convince anyone to do as you say, you can always tell them how you feel. That can't be argued with.
And then you can tell from their reaction to you telling them how you feel if you want to continue interacting with them.
Alright I’ll try that, thank you very much @hearty escarp

Take a look through #looking-for-players - There are loads of DMs here running free games. Many of them (myself included) love having new players and would be happy to guide you. if you have any questions, feel free to send me a DM.
We? What was the answer and did they answer it correctly?
We as in the community generally. There is no Advantage/Disadvantage rolls for damage. It only applies to D20 tests.
See #dnd-newcomers message and below that.
While the D20 thing is true, new players probably don't know enough to ask their questions correctly. The new OP can correct me if I am wrong, but it sounded like he/she was asking if damage can be rolled twice: the answer is yes there are instances where this happens.
hi
yes, but it was answer that there are no advantages on dmg. If you know any please share :]
where are the games for beginners

Not advantage but there are certain class features, race/species features that do allow rerolling of certain damage rolls (e.g. rerolling 1s). Again, this is not advantage though but damage rolls modification.
Looks like the place for me. Im kinda new to dnd, ive played one session and ide love to actually play a full campaign

I'm also new hi
Here are some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules.

I am a DM looking for people who are good with meeting in person
Hmm I might need to talk to my parents about that.
A reminder that it is against server rules to solicit or organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels. Please use the information in #find-a-game to make an LFG post if you're using our LFG channels to find a group.
Okay, and I'd also need to ask my parents do to the fact that I am a minor
Thx for letting me know
@echo kelp @harsh fjord I can’t post link or pic of the printable extras just looking for guidance
I have no idea what the extras are, so I can't help without additional information. Sorry!
I'd first read through the adventure and then decide what makes sense to print to enhance your game.
Assuming you're running it as the Dungeon Master
If not... then let the Dungeon Master worry about it 😉
That is solid advice
No problem!
You might see that I'm not 18 yet if you check my profile I think at least, so you don't need to let me know that you gotta ask a parent
Please also don't solicit or share personally identifying information on the server as that too is against server rules (exact age falls under that - unfortunately there are some folks who prey on minors so the less info they have about you the better)
Ok
Okay
I'm lost
I feel that barbarian is a fun class with druid
And I forgot you were here
Don't worry
Check this out if you want guidance.
???
If you are new to DnD you should check out the message I just replied to.
Oh I got you now
Is there any equipment or materials I need to start playing?
Dice, rules, adventures, and character sheets can all be gotten for free, legitimately. Just add friends.
I have dice and a filled out character sheet, so where can I get rules and adventures?
If you're not the DM, you don't need to worry about adventures. The Free Rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Yeah I’m not a DM so I’ll look further into the rules.
Money.
You have to buy one of the two Eberron sourcebooks on DnDB to have access to the character classes for that setting - I'd also reccommend grabbing yourself Xanathar's Guide to Everything - that gives a lot more species and class options, too, but does not contain Warforged
Yeesh, had no idea making a character would cost so much 🫠
If your DM uses DnDB and has the sourcebook, you can join a campaign and create a character within that to create your character for it without paying for it
Oh ok
Are there any quick campaigns to join, I want to play my first game.

Hey guys nice to meet you all. I've played a couple campaigns when I knew a DM but don't talk to anyone from that old group anymore. I don't know anyone else into table top RPGs so I'm looking forward to being part of this community
hi guys! i made a character in roll20, it has now been finalized complete with backstory, but how do i download its character sheet (along side its backstory) to present it to a DM? i am now in the works of trying to join adventures in #looking-for-players, but i don't know how to download a character sheet
I don't think there is an official way to do this on roll20. The sheets there are intended to be used within the roll20 platform.
is there a website that allows that? like a website that makes a pdf sheet of your character for the ease of DMs reading through your character sheet?
Yep, DnD Beyond
How do I play
anyone know how to re-edit the backstory of your character made in roll20? i'm trying to re-edit my character but it keeps just showing me the character sheet

Hey guys I'm completely new to D&D. I've already ordered a starter kit but I'm really trying to learn about lore. Gods, monsters etc.. where is the best place I can learn this stuff? Preferably books or handbooks I can order?
With D&D the question is inevitably: lore about what setting? Many of them have wikis when you can learn general information. The Forgotten Realms wiki for instance is quite extensive.
For the broad strokes, the 2024 DMG has a lore glossary.
I think this is the spot to ask it, I’ve never played before and am familiarising myself with the rules before I play, if I have a Shortsword and a scimitar, can I attack with the Shortsword and use vex so I get advantage on my next attack and then use nick with my scimitar so that I still have my bonus action? Also is the bonus action worth the effort?
Or is this a #dnd-rules rules question
#dnd-rules would probably be the more 'correct', place, but for a short answer, yes, that works. You then still have your bonus action free to use for something else.
For example, a fighter might then use that bonus action to use Second Wind.
Backing what @hearty escarp said, D&D is ultimately something of a template. When it comes to lore, it depends on the setting, and each Dungeon Master uses the one they prefer. It could be a preexisting one, like the popular Forgotten Realms setting, or they may be using an entirely original one.
I know in 2025, the Forgotten Realms is going to get a lot of love with upcoming books, so it's not a bad setting to start with via the wiki if that's your cup of tea.
Yes. "Nick" frees up the Bonus Action since that "Nick" attack is essentially just part of—yet also following after—the previous attack you make with the Shortsword. You give yourself advantage via Shortsword's Vex, Nick attack them with said advantage, which frees up your Bonus Action.
Not just that, apparently it’s getting a whole TV show
Forgotten Realms gets a lot of love in general
It is my favorite setting. Where would I be without my favorite god of tyranny?
hi eveyrone 🫰
Thank you so much for the info! Are there any books you would personally recommend? I really would like to engrosse myself in the world
There's the Forgotten Realms wiki. I can't help with books, though.
I've never played Dungeon & Dragons before, will someone help me to learn the basics please?

Any groups for new players to learn and play?
Check the various posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Most folks are fine with new to D&D players as long as they are putting in the effort to learn on their own instead of relying on everyon in the game to teach tem (they'll help but their game time is precious and you should respect that).

Hi
did Boon of Dimensional Travel work with cantrip?
also did Boon of Dimensional Travel work with spell that buff or nerf you?
It works with any spell that takes the Magic action to cast.
Just action, since it specifies the Magic action.
The only exception I can think of right now is a Thief that gets the ability to take the Magic action as a bonus action if it concerns a magic item.
ok got it
guys fun thing for eldrich knight here is
eldrich knight can use action surge for auto Misty Step without use action and Boon of Dimensional Travel give you teleport for action so use them together i thing you can go to space on first turn
That's not really a newcomers topic though? Most newcomers aren't dealing with boons and the like?
Maybe try #character-discussion or #optimization ?
Hey Guys I'm trying to get back into D&D properly having played a one shot way back in 2021. I'm fortunate enough to have lined up a group of friends to play with and I'm currently trying to figure out how best to start our first campaign which I'm thinking will be the D&D Beyond intro campaign: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. I'm thinking I should buy the book for that campaign. Currently debating if I need to get any more before we start playing or if I should wait and see if I like the game first or not.
hello!
Well in this play trough im already limited to Human, if building assassin again I would definitely take any weapon dmg modifications for maximum critical assassination output 😄
How exactly does MYSTERY KEY work?? How to calculate that 5% chance?
I think my Rogue at lvl 3 has beter chances to unlock lock without it?? 😄
You could roll a d20 and have it work on a roll of 20, basically any way to calculate a 5% / 1 in 20 chance agreed on ahead of time 😛
The Starter Sets are made to include everything you need to begin playing, so anything else you buy would just be because you want it!
thank you, im just that bad with math 😄
i premake my calculations before games xD
Thanks so much it’s a tad confusing when your new to it so it’s much appreciated

Do you play online @magic crow
I play in person rn but I have played online before
I want to play in person but I’m gonna try online first
if you check out the #find-a-game it's pretty easy to find games

Can also stand for Local Friendly Game store
Cool thanks
How about this:
Chase is supposed to start the minute the players decide to escape and dash away, it is pretty much up to them when their escape starts, its why it even notes here. DMGp253

Whats the highest level spell i could cast at level 1? The highest i can find is level 3 by using the drow feat. Is that the max is there a better way to get a level 3 spell?
Drow don't start with a feat, so this assumes the DM gives you a free one
But also probably not really a newcomer topic
With no feats or homebrew, at level 1, the highest level spell you could cast would be level 1

Welcome!
Hi!
Hey @next furnace , I saw you were asking about creating a character in #dnd-discussion . Try this link:
Tis a warm welcome friend
Ohhkk, tysm
I love this server already
You're welcome!
Indeed the greatest of warm welcomes
So im struggling to find help from the links- qhat are character points? Like ik you put them into things like charisma- wisdom- intelligence- stuff like that- but idk what or how many to put in the boxes
I suppose they are called saving throws? And skills
This is confusing...
😭
I heard most dms when making a character sheet they usually use rolls to determine your wisdom or any other skills but! its up to the person who is making the character
So like i just...randomly take a d20 and roll it?
Yeah!
where is a good place to get started playing online
Oh- thats more fun then i thought!
Those are called ability scores. 👇
I'm trying to find that myself but also adding that you should use youtube with most stuff or questions with D&D
Thank you good sir
Do i do the same for the skills? Like abrobatics- animal handling- arcana-
Ohhh ok- so i can do the dice thing- but i have to stay within 27 points?
Those are knowledge based for ex: you're a wizard so focusing arcana is preferable
And Wisdom
If you’re using Point Cost, the chart here will show you how many points each score costs.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScorePointCosts
Wdym- they all have a catagory they are appart of but its all individual things
I can recommend a video to watch that'll break it down more better and make it bitesize knowledge
Do you know where i can find one? I usualy dont have luck finding videos on my own
You won’t be able to calculate your skills and saving throws until you’ve first got your ability scores, and then your ability score modifiers.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
This takes more brain power then i thought 😭
Just focus on the ability score to start.
If you google Point Buy Calculator, there’s plenty of options that will help you there.
D&D is usually like that but that's why there's youtube and knowledgeable people
They certainly can be.
Ranger is a based character that focuses on nature and as well as that be an archer
So uhh...if i have a 7 for strength- thats not on the point chart
That will govern you a negative modifier.
Read chapter 2 making a character
#learn-to-play has a link for the free rules
If you’re using Point Cost, everything starts at 8 and can be increased by spending your 27 points as shown on the chart.
A 7 isn’t possible unless you’re rolling for your ability scores instead.
Ohhhhh...so do i put 8 for everything or bad idea
They all start at 8. I wouldn’t leave them all at 8.
Again, I’d recommend just using one of the many online calculators, like this one:
https://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html
Ah-
Have you chosen a class already?
Because your class will change which abilities you’ll want to prioritize.
Ranger is one example.
?tag new ranger
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
☝️ There’s a recommended ability score assignment there.
Ill just...copy that onto my sheet
Can i go up one more on dexterity?
Make it 16? And lower a point on another one?
15 is the highest you can get with Point Cost or Standard Array.
But your background also provides a few increases here.
So if you choose a background that lets you increase your Dex, you could get it to 16 that way.
Soldier, for example, says this:
Ability Scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution
https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/406488-soldier
So you can increase all three of those by 1, or increase one by 2 and another by 1.
In this case, I’d maybe do +2 Dex and +1 Con.
Ah alright
I know i wanna make a ranger elf but im still chosing what kind of elf
So here should i just copy whats here onto my sheet?
?tag new paladin
Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.

And add the bonus from your background, yeah.
Alrighty! So what would a criminal background add
Criminal is Dex, Con, and Int.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/406474-criminal
You can always use d&d beyond to make a sheet if you have a physical sheet copy paste
Wait are you using 2014 rules or 2024
So you could do +2 Dex and +1 Con there, too.
Which kit?
I have an essentials kit and starter kit
Hello!! I have a question: is art of DnD variants allowed in the arts and crafts section? Got a reminder and want to avoid that as much as possible
Im using my essentials kit
What do you mean by “DnD variants”?
For the particular artwork I posted, it's Fate/Lost Continuum, a Fate-style derivative of DnD 5e
Yeah, that doesn’t count as D&D for the purposes of this server.
Alright so in total would it be...
Str.12
Dex.17(thats plus two with the background)
Con.14(thats plus one)
Int.8
Wis.14
Cha.10
You’re using 2014 rules so your modifiers will come from your species/race.
Background just give you a few proficiency’s
Is that right?
Ooh, thanks!! Will keep that in mind in the future~
Oh?
Yeah, the Essentials Kit uses older rules where that extra bonus comes from the race instead.
If you want to use the newer background instead, you’d just ignore any bonuses from your race, if any.
Alrighty
But is this right?
If you’re sticking with the background bonus, yeah.
Alrighty- so im good to write that down?-
Go for it
There should be two places to write numbers for each of those scores.
A big box, and then usually a smaller circle underneath.
I’d put these in the circle.
Then you’ll want to look up your scores here and write the matching modifier in the box.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
So if you look at the row for 17, you’ll see a +3 on the right.
Ok so put them in the smaller circle below the big box?
Alright
So i do that for the rest of them right?
Yep
Yep
I did it!
Nice!
Ok now for the skills and saving throws
So if you check the Ranger rules, you’ll see a Proficiencies section, which says this:
Saving Throws: Strength, Dexterity
Skills: Choose three from Animal Handling, Athletics, Insight, Investigation, Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Survival
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/5-ranger#ClassFeatures
So next to each skill and saving throw, you should see another little circle.
I see very small circles
Go ahead and fill in the circles next to your strength and dexterity saving throws, and any three of the skills listed there.
Like what woukd be on a test almost
Yep! Fill them in just like you would for a test.
Alrighty i did dex and str
So for skills i can only chose one if these?
Choose three of the ones there.
You get two more from your background, too.
Skill Proficiencies: Sleight of Hand and Stealth
Oh- so the 2 extras can be what i want? Or no
The two from your background are Sleight of Hand and Stealth.
And then you can choose three from Animal Handling, Athletics, Insight, Investigation, Nature, Perception, and Survival.
For a total of five.
You might want to check your race, too, and see if it gives you any additional proficiencies.
So now, next to each saving throw and skill, you’ll also see a blank line.
I do i do
Each of the skills should have any ability listed next to it as well.
For the ones where you didn’t fill in that circle, you’re going to want to write the modifier for that ability.
Acrobatics, for example, should say Dex, so you’d write your Dex mod: +3.
In the ones where you did fill in the circle, you’ll want to add your Proficiency Bonus as well, which for a level 1 character is +2.
Stealth, for example, also says Dex but should have the circle filled in, so you’d write a total of +5.
Ohhh ok so i just put the modifyer for what category its ok? Like acro is dex so id do ofc +3 for that and animal handling is wisdom which is 10 so id do +0 for that?
Yep!
Same thing, but add another +2.
Oh? So +2 for all of them or
So Stealth is your +3 Dex and your +2 proficiency bonus for a total of +5.
So for str i have +1 and lets say althetics i would do +1 and add two?
Same for Sleight of Hand.
