Hey quick question if y’all don’t mind me and some friends tried dnd for the first time tonight we did a mini campaign and are going to start on a big one next weekend I felt like I really struggled with my character and found myself not helping the whole time I am wondering if I chose a class choice that is not very friendly to beginners (nobody in our group really knows the rules) I made a blood hunter wizard dual class if this is a beginner friendly build and I’m just dumb what should I read up on so that I am ready for our big adventure next weekend and if it’s not what’s something that would be more starter friendly and has a similar vibe

May I join a campaign this will be my first one
It's oki
Stick with one class befor going into multi classing
Got any questions @tall lily
So for a cleric do I have to be a certain species?
And am I able to have a familiar like a animal
You can choose any species to play. Clerics don't get familars.
You don't need to google anything. The Free Rules has everything you need to know.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
So im going to play test my campain should I write the ideas of the test players down or interprit it in my own way?
Dumb question but what stat do you add to rolls for attacking with an Armorer Artificer's gloves for roll to hit and damage?
#dm-discussion would be a better place to ask. This channel is to help new players learn the game.
Take any and all feedback
Depends on the stat it normally uses
All it says is that it counts as a simple melee weapon
I think its Dex though I can be wrong
Ye so its d20+int+prof bonus
+1 more with the infusion
Do you think itd be better to have 20 intel at level one or no-
Correction: Its nearly imposible to have a 20 on anystat at lv 1 unless your min maxing or roleld really, really good
i managed to get 3 sixes when i rolled my intel stat
3 sixes and a two
I don't recommend you roll your stats without your DM witnessing it.
Use the Point Buy system.
He told us to roll them on call and we all did-
Can a wizard pick any weapon to cast spells when starting? For example a magical whip?
No
Wizards are limited to proficiency with Simple weapons.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Wizard
They CAN start out with a whip but they won't have profiency with it and it wouldn't really be magical (unless you cast say true strike)
Wizards use a arcane focus, normaly being a wand, or somthing else. They are proficant in simple wepaosm like quarter staffs
Not officially though it'd be like "my character sold his starting equipment and purchased a whip"
That's something to talk to with the DM.
I'm going to be joining a DND group I'm thinking I want to be a wizard but I'm not a fan of the quarterstaff. Any suggestions?
You shouldn't be worried about using a melee weapon as a wizard...
Don't you have to pick something as your starting gear though? Is the wizards ability independent of the starting weapon? For example it's not like a wand that they need to cast
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Wizard
Starting Equipment
Choose A or B: (A) 2 Daggers, Arcane Focus (Quarterstaff), Robe, Spellbook, Scholar’s Pack, and 5 GP; or (B) 55 GP
I saw that option b was 55 Gp that's why I ask thought it would be interesting to have a wizard that's not the gandalf sort
Carful with that, you can cchoose another focus tho
That's essentially what I'm getting at I want to have a unique focus and was curious if that's doable.
Crystal,Orb,rod,Wand, staff are your focus choice... If you dont have those you wont be a efficant spellcaster
For sure. Focuses are easily reflavorable. Pick an existing option and change its look and theming however you see fit, as long as the way it works mechanically stays the same.
Helo I’m new

Is chain mail armour considered a tool or equipment ?
What about a dungeoneers pack and handaxes ?
You can see a list of the armors here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Armor
Armor is a piece of equipment. You need to have proficiency in a type of armor to use it effectively.
Handaxes are a weapon.
A dungeoneer's pack is a collection of equipment. You can see the details here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#DungeoneersPack12GP
thanks
I have a question, is the dungeoneer's pack alone a tool ? And the stuff inside it is equipment ? Or is all of it equipment
The pack doesn't include a tool. Tools are particular items. You can see the list here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Tools
Stuff like the dungeoneer's pack is pretty much just a collection of items.
Meanwhile stuff like the cook's utensils and the herbalism kit are tools and counts as a single item.
making a character is confusing... How do I create a character ? Is there maybe like a step to step guide witch relys on the 5e handbook ?
The handbook does include a step by step guide, here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
Do you have a question about something in particular?
So chapter 4 has these liek different types of something ? There is Noble, hermit and others, I'm confused about how do you use them ? Are they required ?
These are backgrounds and each character has one. You can look at them like an "archetypal background" of sorts. Roughly what your characters past looks like. They give you various benefits, like a feat and skill proficiencies.
So it's just like to spice up your background and not just 50 years of walking or smth
Thanks, now I understand it
Hi
I have another question, if I'm a dwarf with the background of soldier and I rolled a 8 to I'm a supporter witch gets to pick masons tools and a dward also gives you a few choices do I pick just one of them or do I get to be a smith that can cook
I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you rolled an 8. What did you roll for?
Typically, if you have to pick between options it will say something like "Choose A or B:"
And just to be clear, is this the Soldier background you were looking at?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-origins#Soldier
yeah
the 5th edition tells me roll a speciality
and It told me to roll a d8 I did and got support staff witch gives me a proficiency in an artisons thingy uhm
Hi everyone. My daughter wants to learn d&d and I’d like to help her. But I have no idea where to start. I’ve got the dragons of stormwreck isle starter set. But has anyone got any advice or help please?
the examples are cook and blacksmith

I'd read the background carefully. The Specialty part of soldier is just storytelling, it doesn't mean you get a special feature with it.
Being a dwarf (2014 rules) also gives you proficiency in a tool of your choice, so I'd pick whichever you think is cool.
aah yeah I see it now
okay
Is there by any chance anyone hosting irl games in Romania that would be willing to take in a new player with 0 experience? TwT
Hey there. Group finding is done via the find a game channels, so I'd check #looking-for-players
oops my bad
How does proficiency work, how do I get it ? I don't understand how the 5e handbook explains it, it just tells you that you somehow get it from multiclassing, but my group aint gonna do that...
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
So your proficiency bonus is based on the level of the character. You can refer to your class table to see what your proficiency bonus is for a given character level.
ooh, what about like ooh ok now I understand
So if I level up I have +4 proficiency in the classes proficiency's ?
The proficiency bonus levels up at specific levels - again refer to your class table as it will show what your proficiency bonus is at that character level.
aah okay, thanks
Where can I find various character sheets ? I just don't like how the dnd beyond one has a teeny tiny amount of space for backstory
or is it supose to be like that on purpose ?
DDB just hosts the official one. There are various community created sheets around if you plug that query into your search engine of choice.

It’s really up to you when you look for a group. If you don’t know the game well, though, you may not stand a great chance of finding a group, as not everyone is up for teaching new folks.

Best way to learn dnd is to find a dm that is willing to work with new players and just dover right into it
Thanks but quick question, how do you find a group
If you have any online friends that are willing to play, my city has a ttrpg reddit page. Card shops. Shit even if you go to pile game stop ask the dude at the counter if he knows anyone. Online there are plenty of reddit pages and stuff too
Thanks alot
Hello everyone, I hope you're all good ! I'm new here and in the world of DnD games. First I'm French so sorry for my bad English, I have some questions. I hope I'm in the right channel. I want to buy the D&D Essentials Kit Digital on the official website but I don't know if it's in English or French. I can't choose the language, that's why I'm "afraid" to order it. Even if I am quite comfortable in English, I prefer to have it in French to avoid any misunderstandings. So if you have any information on whether I will receive it in French or in English I am interested. Thank you !
This may be a question better for #ddb-support
Thx
Hello world!
I cannot find a party to join and I still lack some knowledge about character creation and some things and I think if someone explains them to me directly I would understand them better than Reading the wiki or another paragraph
Im not like new new but I might be able to assist you with what I do know
if youd like?
Thanks! And if you can also tell me how to join a party or a group that would help a lot
I dont have a open party unfortunately atm but I can help you with a character sheet, as for the party, have a look in #find-a-game
Thanks
do you mind if I dm you /
No problem go ahead

Hey I’m new to dnd does anyone know a good dnd group that accepts or how to find one
Copied this message. Would like to play DND with a friend of mine who lives states away. Ive got my old dice and books and character sheets kept away somewhere. Im not exactly sure how to start setting things up for it, id basically like to get a third or fourth person to participate, I just dont know where to find other players or how to do it online. Could I get some advice?
I could join and u could search on YouTube for guides on how to start
That would be nice, I was just mainly confused on how doing it over a computer would work
Roll-20
I’m not a good source but I’d figure u would all get on a discord call then if people can turn their cameras on then they do but if ur wondering about character sheets and stuff like that I’d use dnd beyond because if u start a campaign u can invite people and u can see their character sheets
You’ll need to rebuy the module but it’s by far the easy it’s way to runs. Game online
Also discord helps yes lol
Module?

If your running an official campang that’s been publish by wizards you can buy the adventures on roll-20 and its alls et up for you. The older ones may need you to manually organize things tho
Id rather set up our own unique ones and just figure out how to do it online
So I should just watch videos and use apps to run stats and such?
@pliant widget how many people do u already have to play with
If your playing online the better way is to use a vtt like roll 20 you can import your own maps into your game. And it has the srd monsters for free and you can make characters using the free basic rules, otherwise you’ll be stuck with theather of the mind and d&d beyond
I only have one friend at the moment and I dont mind spending a few bucks for a better experience

You'll likely improve your chances of finding a game if you've checked out the free D&D rules and have a rough idea of how the game works and how to make and use a character sheet.
You don't have to know everything but understanding what the Dungeon Master means when they say "Okay roll a persuasion check" will help the game move more smoothly then having to constantly pause the game flow to have someone explain how to roll a d20 and add your modifier to it.
This is gonna be fun to learn..

Read the free basic rules
Paladin is a safe choice, while not as simple as barbarian or fighter. They have there usefulness every party needs a paladin
Is there like a tank character who acts more of a frontline support
"Tank" isn't really a thing in D&D (there's no "aggro"). Any martial (fighter, barbarian, paladin, ranger, monk) could be frontline.
Actuly while there is no other are ability’s that can make creatures focus on you though yeah no tanks
I put in air quotes "aggro" because that mechanic doens't exist in D&D due to the DM controlling the monsters.
Ah okay, I see. May I ask what makes Paladin a non simple class?
Paladins is a mix of martial and spellcaster.
Ye, they also have healing spells as well.
oh thats neat, i didn't know classes can be mixed

Keep looking. New openings get posted every day (and they get filled quickly).
It may take you days to weeks to find a good table to play at.
Is there anyway to make like a mimic type of class
Like dark souls type thing but as a fighter
If you're new to D&D I highly recommend you just stick to official classes while you learn how the game works.
I gotchu
You can always reflavour the classes without changing the gameplay mechanics (aka homebrewing).
If I have the 2024 Player's Handbook, should I buy the 2014 PHB as well to cover not being able to find local 2024 tables?
The Basic Rules and Free Rules cover the 5E and 5.24E rulesets. I wouldn't worry about the 2014 PHB until you actually find a table that uses it. Don't spend more than your budget dictates.

When it comes to the rules in general theres a lot as it's a rather old and quite bulky game
Generally the ones that matter is stuff like "Use the number of dice given for an action" and "Try to follow the PHB (Player's Hand Book) or Campaign book if lost"
Otherwise it's what the Dungeon Master is willing to let you do
In my experience it's mostly a learn by doing sort of game
I second this. You learn the best when inside of a game
Or trying out things yourself
I learned how to play and DM by getting a group together to play
I will do that thank you very much
I definitely recommend trying out a one shot or a beginner campaign to ease yourself into it
While you can do more intense campaigns I generally recommend baby steps to not overwhelm yourself
oh and etiquette wise what should i be mindfull of
Table Etiquette
- Try to avoid constantly being on your phone
- Avoid talking over others if possible
- Let others give ideas & suggestions too
- Listen to the DM
Online Etiquette
- Don't talk over others when possible
- Listen to the DM
- Check the chats for other people's messages
- Avoid tabbing out too often
(Just as a very rough idea, they're not make or break)
Each group is different so always best to ask about expectations and rules early on
No background noise from your mic when you're in online sessions when possible too lol
Muting your mic is definitely a good idea when not talking
Outside of normal etiquette for group activities, some things to remember
- Everyone is investing time at the table so be mindful of that. Don't waste others time or monopolise the game
- Communication is better than assumptions. The game works via descriptions but that's an imperfect tool. If in doubt, ask. If you think someone is misunderstanding you, clarify
- Working towards the enjoyment of the table as a whole will yield an overall more fun experience than just working towards your own enjoyment. You get more out than you put in that way
- Make your expectations clear in session 0 (the ice-breaker session before the campaign starts). Not everyone has the same assumptions/goals/desires when it comes to D&D
- If you have a problem out of the game, don't try and fix it through actions in-game. Instead communicate
- D&D is a game where people tend to put themselves out there in terms of emotional vulnerability. Stuff like morals, values, relationships etc. As such, safety tools are important and safety before all else
heya, im a new comer here, sadly have no prior experience to the game
This was sent earlier which seems helpful
Can answer other questions tho
aight, ill be back after reading it
thanks for welcoming me
We're glad to have you. New players and their evolution to new Dm's are the lifeblood of this game lmao
ive played 1 game of dnd before but sadly never finished it had like 20 1-2 hour sessions was pretty fun but have always wanted to do it again used that roll 20 site but justr wondering if there are any other good ones ?
im mostly here after brain storming a bunch of really stupid charater idea that i really put them to try
We do have #character-discussion for discussing character build ideas
This channel is more for helping new to D&D folks get started with learning the core game rules and mechanics
Like other sites to find D&D games? Have you checked #looking-for-community for other D&D Discord servers that may offer a variety of different D&D games?

guy what do i do in the looking-for-community channel? how do i play with someone?

In the immediate term, the most important parts are Chapter 1 (basic mechanics); Chapter 2 (How to create a character), and the parts of Chapters 3-5 that deal specifically with the character you create.
So im just getting into dnd and i was thinking about picking up the players handbook but ive seen some stuff online that a new player handbook is coming out soon? Should i wait for the new one or get the old one and what are the differences between them?
It’s already out!
The new one is already out. A lot of folks talk about the new PHB (2024) in the same vein as a patch. Both 2024 and 2014 work together, but there are differences you can read about here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1810-updates-in-the-players-handbook-2024
ah spoot really? On amazon it says its not out till the 18th?
Do local stores have them already?
You might be looking at the Monster Manual. Players generally want to try and get the Player's Handbook, which has been out for a few months now.
ohhh gotcha yea i think that was it. So the monster manual isnt out yet tho right. Same with the dmg?
The 2024 DMG is out.
The DMG is out, the only one that's still just barely not out yet is the Monster Manual.
It's in circulation, but if you're planning on just joining in as a player you won't need either the DMG or MM. Just the player's handbook is what you'll be looking for.
Based on her post in #dm-discussion , it looks like she is planning on DMing
I wouldnt mid doing either :3
both sound like a lot of fun. I want to learn as a player first tho
Nicew
The monster Manuel is coming this month actually. How ever it won’t be compatible with every pre written campang. If it has orcs it’s useless
Not at all. It has a conversion table that tells you what statblock to use if you want to represent the equivalent of a 2014 orc.
Wondering: how many spells should a person have In a dnd game?
Depends on their level.
And their class.
Are there any recommended 1 or 2 page player cheat sheets for 2014/2024 D&D to keep handy at the table for new players?
Search up "dnd cheat sheet" or "dnd combat action sheet", that'll do you.
Oh okay
How do you even get into a game of dnd? I've got characters, they aren't completely rounded yet as I don't rly understand the levels and that but I don't even know how to find a dm or ppl to play with 😅

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to learning the game. The rules, linked above, are a good place to start. Or the videos. Other options include:
- Watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Play the demo.
- Read #learn-to-play.
- Sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
Sooo hypothetically if I was looking to pick up a book for dnd the players handbook is the first one I should get right? I’m more interested in getting the DMG personally but I was wondering if going for the older version of the DMG would be a bad idea considering the new one just came out? I’m having trouble sourcing a copy of the new one
The Player's Handbook contains the core rules of the game. The 2014 DMG is poorly organized and isn't great for a new DM (but does serve as a handy reference for someone with experience). The 2024 DMG does a much better job of helping the new DM learn how to run the game.
To add to that: the single cash-money purchase I'd suggest to somebody getting a group into the game for the first time would be the current Starter Set, with the adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. It's around half the cost of one of the hardcovers, and has enough of what you need to let the group establish for sure if it's something they're more invested in or not.
Could play in like half an hour if you want. My session got cancelled at short notice so I have a whole lot of nothing going on.
The starter set (or the Essentials Kit, at around the same price) has a set of 4-5 pregenerated characters, a slimmed-down rulebook with the bare basics, a poster map, an adventure that will take ~3-4 sessions to play through (~5-6 sessions for the Essentials kit), a set of dice, and maybe a screen.
The adventure in the starter set gives clearer directions to a rookie GM. The adventure in the Essentials Kit is a little more "sandbox" / open world, and so doesn't do quite as great a job of handholding through. BUT, it will take the characters a little bit farther up the power curve, and the Essentials Kit at least used to include claim codes for 3 additional adventures that would effectively last as far as most hardcover campaigns do.
Would someone need the contents of the player handbook before going for the DMG or could I skip it and just dive straight into the DMG?
The Free Rules contain much of what's in the PHB (except for most player options), so you could in theory grab the DMG first. I think that would be unusual, but you do what works for you!
See also my point above re: Starter Set / Essentials Kit.
If you're planning on running and would only want the PHB to get a rough idea of the character classes and the rules in there, then yeah DMG+ free rules could work. Be unorthodox
Hello everyone!
Yea starter kit sounds good too i think i actually have one somewhere. Im more interested in commiitng to DnD in either aspect as a player or DM and getting invested and finding groups to play with and such. 10/10 advice though for getting into the game.
I've no experience using VTTs, but is there any VTT that works well on mobile and is also compatible with pc?
I think Owlbear Rodeo is serviceable, but none are ideal as far as I know.
VTTs aren't really meant for mobile, mostly due to screen resolution. Sure, mobile screens can be 4k but there are many buttons.
Ahh gotcha, thanks
hello whats up, does anybody know any short campaigns like 2 or 3 sessions long? I played for the first time with some friends yesterday and we had fun but we wanted to try something a bit longer than a one shot 🤔 😥
The starter set ones are good, lost mines of phandelver, dragons of storm wreak island,
Some groups like to do longer "one-shots". Talking about games that feel like one-shots but last a lil' longer.
Most of the adventures that are published in anthology books (meaning one book with many separate adventures in it) take about that long to complete. Some examples of anthology books are: Candlekeep Mysteries, Keys from the Golden Vault, and Quests from the Infinite Staircase
One of my groups used to do "one-shots" for an adventurer's guild game. We never did a single session. Three sessions at the very least.
Thank you! I'll check those out
Lost Mine of Phandelver is no longer available stand-alone; just as the first ~half of the adventure Phandelver and Below: The Lost Obelisk.
Quick question. Are there any free adventures or things that can be finished within one sitting?
yes, the internet is full of one shots, that are typically finishable in 4-6 hours
DMs Guild and DriveThruRPG have free adventures (you'll have to use the search filter).
https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/tabletop-gaming/best-free-dnd-one-shots-5e/ found this. I played a bunch of those but not all, but the ones I player were good
Hey this is my first post here are there any groups more welcoming to first time players looking for someone?
Please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
Many groups are fine with new to D&D players - but you will likely improve you chances by having a rough idea of the core game rules and mechanics and how to make and use a character sheet.
So give the free basic rules a read: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I have so many dice as Somone who’s only played one session before the irl group fell apart lol
Been meaning to give it another try with online play
Dumb question do I have to read the rulebook for an extremely long period of time until I know everything?
Yeah
So I have to read the entire rulebook for about a month?
Ask @toxic imp
I have the urge to say smth not nice to you
You don't need to buy the Player's Handbook. The Free Rules is free (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules)
Familiarize yourself with character creation, ability scores, skill checks, and combat rules. You don't need to read and memorize everything. The rules are there to be referenced.
Gulp
What did he do?
SHE
Dw abt it
OK
No just the basics on how to make a character, and combat rules everything else can be referenced on the fly
Holy
I might be a bit addicted
Dont you dare get addicted
Been thinking about a new character idea even if I haven’t played much I still throw ideas around
Let’s hear it
Hatsune miku from fortnite
Please keep this for conversation/questions about the game. Anything else can go into off topic
My bad
How you know I brought that
I didnt even know there was an off topic
So this is the chat for the newcomers?
Im new
will post in #character-discussion
Ok so question I'm getting into D&D and I'm still quite new but I've made a sheet and everything so....
Like what do I do now?
Play
Go to looking for players
Did you read the Free Rules to familiarize yourself with ability scores, skill checks, and the combat rules?
#learn-to-play if you needn’t framiluize yourself with the rules or #find-a-game
I looked at those and even a few online books and more im ready jumping full force into this so yes I
I mean I'm mostly ready
Just need to find players
Free Rules on D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Your next step is look for a table to play at. Check #find-a-game
Alrighty then thanks
Can i just play for 1 session with someone or is it just always way longer
And do i need to use my voice cause id rather type
Some games are just one session long. Those are referred to as "one-shots."
Other games, referred to as campaigns, may last months or even years.
Most onling games will use voice chat because it's quicker and easier for everyone, especially the DM. However, there are some games that are text based but they're much slower.
It may take you days or even weeks to find a table to play it. Keep looking because openings get filled up very quickly because there are waaaaay more players than DMs.
no but I wish I meant it as one T-T
Okay bro
Oh that sucks....so I guess I'm planning the waiting game then

I would be down to join a group with y’all
Check out other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels. Most D&D Youtubers have their own Discord server. Also, check out your local Facebook D&D group.
Please use the Looking For Game channles to solicit/organize games - it's off-topic here in the discussion channels.
See #find-a-game for info on how to use the LFG channels
Alrighty then
D&D isn't a drop in game. Most DMs would want to vet potential players to see if they fit with the group and scheduling is a big hurdle.
Sorry for disturbing y’all’s conversation but I was wondering if anyone could help me write a backstory for my character
So uh, Im very new to dnd and Im not so sure why it’s popular. Could someone explain? (This isn’t me calling dnd bad)
3 points:
- Where did your character come from? (can keep relatively high-level until you find a game but something like "a small fishing village")
- What did they do before becoming an adventure? (e.g. "Helped in family's fishing business")
- What caused them to go adventuring? (e.g. "pirates captured me and my family's ship - I have managed to escape and now seek a way to get revenge on those pirates.")

Interesting
Very
It’s pure escapism for allot of people, it helps when wotc and hasbro put people who also enjoy the system make good content. (See bg:3 and honor among thieves)
Not just pure escapism, imho. It's also great for exploring social rules, including fantasy rules but in a safer way (since there are rules and guidelines), so it's a real social interaction.
thankyou very nice
i forgot what discord # was the one where i find a group to learn how to play
I think the Roll20 support forums/Discord server (I think they have one?) would be a better place to get support with their tools.
You could also try #third-party as that's the channel to discuss 3rd party tools and services like Roll20
It’s hard to find help lol the game process is hard asf
Are you apart of a game on roll-20?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Imma end up making bro invincible
^ that's how you generate stats but best to check with your DM and group on how they would like to handle it.
So I need to be apart of a group before I make a character
Yeah….
Not necessarily - but be prepared to adjust things to fit the group's standards
You can use the character vault as practice tho. Keep in mind you’ll be limited if you don’t own the books on roll-29
Hello all...
Hello
👋
Just trying to read all this info… quite a lot to be honest but I want to learn and get started right
I have played DND before, both online and in-person, but I still feel largely like a newbie with no clue what I'm doing. So I want to play more!

Nice! My experience is mostly forum roleplay so written posts
So do you mostly just link up via discord and then maybe do a voice sesh?
Or does that happen off app?
Well, the former I guess. The times that I've done it online have been in a different dnd server where we played via a voice channel, though we can also use a chat instead of speaking

Hello, I've played as a DM many times but never an actual adventurer so I would love to have a go at it. With my experience with being a DM I know a good amount of being on the other side but not fully how to be the player so I cant wait to be able to be a player instead of a forever DM.
I'm trying to learn how to DM and how all the dice are used properly so I can run a session with my friends but everything i find online is over complicated
Have you tried reading the free rules?
You don't need to learn how all the dice are used, that'll come as you explore the rules

Yeah, i have difficulty reading small text and it's layed out unusually so I'm in the process of slowly deciphering it
also dont worry too much about the rules, most times its better that the game keeps going than it is to get the precise ruling on something, just note it down and figure it out before the next session
how i personally do it is "if i dont know the rules and its cool or fun for the players, ill do it that way even if its not correct"
What do you mean by "layed out unusually"?
If you load the rules on D&D Beyond, you can scale the text up
While that's an admirable sentiment, it's not really newcomer friendly advice
Generally you need to know the basics of the rules before you start ignoring them
The discord ones can be difficult for dyslexic folks to read
(Not saying this person is dyslexic)
agree, definitely get the very basics like what to roll and so on.
When I try and read it it's 2 collums on one page and it confuses my brain a lil
Okay, in that case try the D&D Free Rules on D&D Beyond
That's single column text and you can scale it up
I thought I turned it off, my bad
That wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at the person who pinged me
You did turn it off
Ohh okay phew lol
yeah must have been me i guess, i didnt know u could turn the ping of a reply off.
I'll have a look now and see if that's easier, thank you!
Also if you struggle reading two-column text, try getting a sheet of paper and covering one half up as you read the other
For a very rough idea on how to play
- Definitely recommend checking out the PHB if able, just has it's got most stuff in one place
- Trying out a one shot or beginners campaign can be good, one of the best ways to learn is to start playing
- If text is difficult try out YouTube tutorials as they'll read for you and you get a more visual guide
also if you're on windows the built in magnifier and accessibility settings are very underrated
Well more of a "how to learn how to play"
That's a good idea, thank you! Idk why i didn't think of that
I usually use a ruler to read so I think I forgot other things existed
I've not actually seen those 😭
its like one of those things that people think are only for those who are impaired, but can help most users.
Thank you! I might do that today while I'm at work then
Can also be in browser settings or shown as + - symbols
i personally always enlarge my cursor because i think the default one is slightly too small for a lot of peoples liking
also the microsoft narrator is also pretty good if you'd like to both read and listen.
Functionally, the d20 is used when there's uncertainty about an outcome. Other dice are used either to buff/debuff the d20, or to determine degrees of success once an outcome is determined.
eh. discuss with your gm and other players obv but dont bog urself down on rules espeicllay if youre new
Please read what I said
I never said to "bog urself [sic] down on rules"
I said from a newcomer perspective generally you need to know the basics of the rules before you start ignoring them
Hello, I am new to this community and game. My friends and I decided to start playing. I have been unanimously chosen as the DM. Question on D&D Beyond for a Sorcerer. Do I add my spell attack and modifier bonus to damage on a spell hit?
For example if I successfully hit using Acid Splash and rolled a 6 on my d6, would the damage be 6, or 6 + 4 spell attack so 10, or 6 + 4 spell attack + 2 modifier so 12?
Your modifier is only relevant for attack rolls, not for damage roles unless you have a feature that says you add your spellcasting modifier to the damage of a spell
Ok so add modifier on attack dice roll but do I add spell attack +4 on damage result?
I can’t add a picture but I show 2 modifiers on my spell page - +2 modifier and +4 spell attack
No. Your Spell attack is also only there for spells that have an attack roll
Not for its damage.
Ok ty

Heyo
alr i did look at a few rules, and want to try dnd
is there anywhere where i can play

That's, more or less, the hard part. @harsh fjord has a great resource on finding a game linked in their bio.
So I made a dnd character forever ago (I still haven’t played a campaign yet though) and this anime magic and muscles came out, unintentionally my dude is like the main character.
So much for having a unique dude
but that’s ok I still like him feels like me for sure
Not a newcomer but idk
Lol
If you just want help building a character, I'd recommend asking in #character-discussion.
Lol thanks, didn't see that channel
hey there
does some kind of martial healer exist? i imagine it like alternating arrows and shooting allies with a bow to heal instead of or additionally to casting spells
There are no official healing bows.
Cleric, Ranger, and Paladin can all use weapons and heal on the side. Note that the role of "healer" doesn't really exist in DnD, since healing is more of a post-combat activity rather than one made to use in the middle of a fight
yea i heard about that which is why i asked
playing bg3 i like it much more to have a life cleric in my team to heal in battle and for flavor it would have been cool to use a weapon for it
Can i make a wizard cast spells though bullets?
Just instead of magic missiles for magic it could be shots
Hello, I'm new to d&d and I wanna participate in a game but I can't seem to find one. Tried looking for players section but people either don't want new players or they get filled fast. What can I do about this
Let’s keep the channel clear for new to D&D folks to get started learning the core game rules and mechanics
This is all on the DM to decide not the player.
might as well try a campagin first before anything else
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible games you can join. Direct message the poster or use the thread attached to the post to communicate your interest.
I did try that for the last few days, someone even left the discord after I told them that I'm new XD
I said I'm not ignorant about it that I know a bit and I'm eager, I said that I at least watched a bit from critical role and some other campaigns and someone completely dodged my question by saying a lot of dms don't like critical role. That wasn't my question I'm telling you my experience about it lol
You asked "What can I do about this"
Presumably you weren't asking what you can do about people not wanting new games or games getting filled fast (given there's nothing you can do about those things) so the only other option is to be persistent in your search and cast a wide net
oops sorry, figured this was the thread for newcomers lfg
This channel is to help new players learn the rules of the game.
You can direct message folks posting in #looking-for-dm
But as noted we do not allow soliciting/organizing games outside of the LFG channels.
@echo kelp heard that, thanks
are there any voicechats?
was wondering the same thing
Hey trying to learn more about DnD. Can anyone give me tips to character building?
Also what’s the time commitment for a normal game?
Folks in #character-discussion can.
Every table is different but from my experience a typical D&D game session lasts between 3-4 hours.
My only tip on character building is play what is enjoyable for you and works well for the game/group you're playing with.
Thanks!
Hello! I’m sorta new to 5e and I’m starting a character in a new campaign. Crafting seems to be intrinsically tied to my character’s arc. Does anyone have a good resource to prepare with that?
By crafting do mean like the artificer type of crafting?
Or using tools like carpentry and jewelry tools
More like using skills and tool proficiencies to make things
I’m sure it depends on the DM, but I’m just nervous about looking dumb in the middle of a session, saying, “uhh… I make a thing…”
You tell the DM you want to craft something and the DM will tell you what you need to do, such as how much gold and time. There's nothing dumb or nervous about telling what you want your character to do because it's part of the game.
So in my experience using tools and skills like that usually comes from discussing a lot with your DM.
Depending on what it is you could just ask straight up to make something like in a campaign I played my character was an engineer and made a simple prosthetic weapon arm for one of our players and he gave me an idea of what it needed and how long it would take
Bigger stuff is better to discuss privately because it takes a lot more time and resources
You kinda nailed it.. my character has a prosthetic arm
Ok thank you both! I just wasn’t sure if there’s a bunch of tables or math involved. I feel a little better now ❤️
You don't need to memorize the rules. The rule book(s) are there to be referenced.
Again, tell your DM what you want your character to do. The DM will say either you can't do it ("I want to persuad the king to give me his crown!") or roll to see if you succeed ("I want to pick the door's lock.")
Yeah.. as i build the character, crafting is going to be a core identity of this character, so i wanted to make sure I wasn’t taking too big of a bite 😆
Thanks again 😻
DND takes time to figure out what makes sense and what doesn't!!! It takes a bit of practice and genuinely how your DM likes to do things.
Like a lot of artificers I know like to try and make guns and bombs but not every DM is cool with it
Haha
I feel pretty experienced with a couple of classes, but I’m about to play a monk for the first time who has to maintain/build her own limbs. It was overwhelming. But yeah! I’ll make sure to be clear and detailed about my ideas as we go
No.. more like a human orphaned to a dwarven guild hall.
My mom worked when I was young and I spent a lot of time in the sign shop she worked in, so it’s a little nod to that. All of the shop raised me a little bit 🙂
what are the general thoughts on optional class features?
Do I create a character before joining a group or after
Both
Can you expand on that answer please?
There is no right answer lmao
Ok!
Most DMs have select things they like to follow so if you create a character before meeting a party that you like a DM might prefer it if you changed certain things
I come up with a couple of ideas to give a DM, just in case another player is doing something really similar
So make a few on my own but be flexible?
you often end up doing literally both, as in you usually go into a campaign with a character already in mind and then once you're in the group you usually make multiple tweaks to your initial idea to have it fit in with the party and the setting better
how do i play dnd when i dont have personal friends to play? PS. never played before.
I’m in the same boat!
Online and here is the best place to find players
For a first time player, do you recommend an experienced DM? Or will they get frustrated
There's a chat at the very bottom #find-a-game
Actually experienced DMs imo are usually more willing to help newer players
Awesome! Thanks for all your help @cosmic kayak !
It takes time for newer players to break from their shell of not wanting to participate much and in my experience a lot of newer DMs aren't as patient with new players as a more experienced one would be
I'm new to dnd and I'm trying to DM I have a module and a small group but I'm not sure if I need more, is there anything else I need
You have the free basic rules to refer to?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
And patience
I didn't thank you
I'll have to try my hardest
You may also want to check-in with folks in #dm-discussion to talk shop and tips with other DMs
Hi
Hi! I've been interested in dnd for a Lil bit and am just now trying to get into it. I'm learning and I'm wondering if there's a started group who can help me or play and teach me?
Welp me too. Include me with that lol 😆
Let's team up then lol. Be our own little newbie duo
Sounds cool. I'm stumped tho. I dunno where to play the game!
Don't ask me lmao
Maybe #dnd-social-feeds ? I dunno. We might find a group there
Yo I suppose we will have to go to 'looking for players' thread?
Is there one? I haven't seen it.
mind if i join too, brand new and been looking for a game T-T
Oh ofc hop in haha
ayeeeee trioo
Lol sure. I mean if we get enough people maybe we can make our own newbie group XD
Yea some of the plot or I mean settings is on piltover I think 🤔
just joined this ser ver thoni was in like 2 others but couldnt find one
find a good dm and a couple people, the noob campaign
Yesss. I friend requested yall so we can make a little group chat
got it
Yep I gotchu
Hey there you guys! Baby DM here! Just saw the three of you creating a little group and wanted to pop in and float some ideas and questions by you? Mind if I join in?
@tropic badger @pallid quiver @solemn nebula
Oh a DM! Cool
Thanks dude we created a lil group as you've said and I thin so far we're still in the dark
Not sure exactly HOW much help I can provide DM wise as I'm a bit new to this as well, but we can at least get the creative juices flowing!
What do I need buy for DND again?
Free rules are on DDB. To get started, that's all you need.
Free Rules on D&D Beyond https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
i dont have a group or dm at the moment but i'm having fun preparing some characters beforehand
so far ive had some nice ideas and try to balance strengths with weaknesses
how much homebrew is usually fine before i put too much effort into it
It changes from dm to fm, stick with the books and don’t go jntk homebrew
Does anyone have any tips for combat as a ranger? I’m a level 6 ranger and during my sessions we mostly roleplay but during combat I completely start panicking, i have spells and weapons but i don’t know how to act it out/ use the dice. I’m a complete beginner and I feel bad making the others do the work for me, and tbh i get so confused.
i am also very confused on how spell casting during the actual battle works such as (spell slots? how does the spell level affect it, etc.) Any recommended videos that could help?
idk your backstory but ranger has some connection to nature maybe make use of that
shooting arrows with little vines around them which enlarge and ensnare enemies on impact or calling whatever small creatures/spirits of the land to aid you
Yeah! I just say that I use my longbow to shoot it down but when it comes to actually calculating the damage or roll to hit that’s where i’m so dumbfounded
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
omg okay thank u
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#MakinganAttack
Well, when you say you use your longbow to shoot 'it' down, you'll be making an attack with your longbow.
As a level 6 Ranger, you'd be Proficient with the Longbow, and your Proficiency Bonus will be +3, as they are a level (5/6/7/8) character.
You roll a d20
Add your Proficiency Bonus as you are proficient in the weapon, so +3 to the roll
And add your Dexterity Modifier (derived from https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#AbilityModifiersTable depending on your Dexterity Score)
If the total of the d20 roll + your proficiency bonus + your dexterity modifier is equal to or higher than the target's Armor Class (AC), then you Hit them.
For ease of explanation, I assume you have a completely normal longbow and no extraneous circumstances on the attack/damage.
You roll 1d8, and add your Dexterity Modifier. That's how much damage you deal.
Hell yeah this looks like where I gotta be
Hey there. Please use the lfg system for group finding
#find-a-game
Can i join please I'm new in dnd
If you are looking for a group/game please use the Looking For Game channels. See #find-a-game for details on how to use those channels.
Oh, same bro! Honestly I don't think you can quantify homebrew like that. If if fits nicely with the world and character and flows smoothly in action, I think it's fine.
Years ago when D&D Beyond started heavily advertising, I was like, "That's weird, I'm not gonna do it." Then somehow it peaked my interest after I saw this animated series on yt, and then I was like, "Oh, it actually sounds kinda fun."
I made a few characters since then, and I am really excited to start campaign with someone. Just gotta find one now.
so i was reading the rules in the instruction section to find a game. and i came across this rule. can someone quickly tell me what it means? cause from my understanding, it says that we can't exclude anyone from a game unless they are an adult or minor which basically include everyone by default so i am very confused of what this rule is for.
"Games may not exclude any specific group of people, aside from adults or minors."
Some games are for mature audiences, sometimes you wouldnt not like a minor to participate
also minors may prefer not to have adults in their games as well.
Where can I ask to join a campaign, if possible

It means
- "Do you want to exclude adults? You can!"
- "Do you want to exclude minors? You can!"
yeah i understand very well this, but if the only people that can be excluded from a game is adult or minor, that what is left.... lizards ?english isn't my first language so i think i am simply missing something
Just don’t share exact ages please
ah ok ok, it is like this game is not for minor thing and vise versa my bad
makes sense
You've got it
i thought it was saying you could refuse an adult or a minor but nothing else at an individual level and was very confused
Honestly i get the confusion.
😅 i can be silly sometimes
dw, ive seen more silly things being uttered here, also its better to ask than assume
No. You can also do descriptive roleplay, which is where you describe how your character acts.
Different groups will have different expectations and preferences concerning this.
oh alright, i suppose they will mention it in their game description then ?
You don't need to do voices/accents. Not everyone is an actor.
do wtv youre comfortable with
You can describe what your PC does in the third person, like Deva said.
i have played a few oneshot with friends at home and i realize i am way better at describing as a 3rd person than 1st but i have been told that it breaks the game ambiance.
so i wasn't sure if it was just them or a general expectation. thanks for letting me know
It's better to put the right information across in third person.
Instead of focusing exclusively on sounding like a leprechaun and not getting across the point you're actually wanting to get across.
Anyone know of a good campaign on YouTube or twitch or something that has a divination wizard ?
yeah, i feel like it is easier to be clear. i can still describe the character's feeling and what he sees but with less distraction
Not sure if this is a question for here but might as well cause this is my first campaign.
I'm currently a level 6 druid w/ circle of the shepherd. My favourite spell is conjure animals (8 raptors feels so good.)
Our DM plans on moving from the 2014 5e to 2024 5e after our next session. We are going to probably hit level 7 next session. Are there any changes i should be aware of between the 2014 and 2024 version. All i know is conjure animals got changed.
Probably a better question for #character-discussion , but I'll give a quick answer here before you check over there.
Yes, your Conjure Animals got overhauled into a different spell entirely, unfortunately. It's much kinder logistically to your DM and your table now, though!
You can check out the changes to the druid class here.
I would say Sheperd Druid doesnt really work in 2024, at least not as it was designed to work.
heyo!
Welcome
Sup bro
😁
Hello. I've been lurking for a bit here and it's a slow day at work so I thought I'd share a bit here. I am a relatively new DM, though I've hosted a fair number of sessions since starting last June. I average about 5 and a half hours split between Curse of Strahd and The Shattered Obelisk weekly, and prior to that spent a month just learning and preparing. The only player who joins both campaigns is my wife, but we have four others in each group.
My Strahd party meets in person on the weekends, we have a tv we built a cabinet for that we lay on the coffee table, and I run Roll20 on it, and my Shattered Obelisk party is all online through Roll20.
Right now my Strahd party is level 5 and just reached ||Krezek||, while my Shattered Obelisk party is level 4 and ||just beat the young green dragon in Thundertree, and are on their way to Wave Echo Cave.|| 👋
Sounds like you're having a lot of fun. Glad to hear it!
ooooo sound amazing hope your having alot of fun!
yea same just got into D&D to be honest got a hand book so imma read that really fast
I seem to be able to make up detailed side quests and adventures on the fly which is cool
I got a great imagination.. seems like sometimes the flow of the game gets slowed down due to me having to reference and make sure I am adding all the modifications due to gear and feats ect
dnd beyond char sheets are what made it possible for me to do this at all
the character sheets take care of much of the details. Now that I know my players characters better its becoming easier
ello!
indeed indeed best to always talk with those ya playing with to understand them better!
Take your time with it. D&D isn't a game that you can learn quickly. The Player's Handbook is basically a novel, filled with rules. But also, don't feel like you have to memorize everything before you play. The more knowledge you can bring to the table, the smoother things will go, but there will be 4-5 other people at the table to help remind you of any rules you can't remember, and you can always reference the handbook while playing as well.
Sorry to interrup but I'm new to dnd and overwhelmed by it can any one help 😅
Alright!!
Hey what sort of thing would you like help with?
Character making genre rolls and basically every thing
What do you mean "genre roll"?
I mean Geral rolls
What's "Geral"?
Omg my keyboard
I mean general rolls
Im new to D&D and discord so I don't know how it works. im looking for a DM for me and my friend
Attacks, ability skill checks, and saving throws you use a d20 plus modifier (and possibliy Proficiency bonus).
Damage dice is based on the weapon or what the spell description says it does.

Hi
ello
I will but after I learn when can I play ?
oooo good question
You have to find a table to play at, either in person or online. It may take you hours, days, or even weeks to find a good table. There are way more players than DMs so openings get filled up very quickly.
Think of finding a good table to play with like dating — you may get ghosted, have drama, get kicked out, etc. This is because D&D is a social game where you play with people from all walks of life.
The "when" is up to you. There's no button you can click or queue you can join. You have to reach out to people and talk to them to see if you can join their group, then schedule something amongst yourselves
My campaign has been going on for three years and I've lost nine players. People's real life is more important than the game. As the DM, it took me no more than 30 minutes to find replacement players.
Hej guys! I'm new to being a dm and dnd as a whole, me and my friends wanted to make a campaign so i started working on it, i have a map and a bit of story, mostly regarding my towns, i need a bit of help making town maps and how to make monsters balanced etc, any tips?
Hi there. If you want help with DM specific advice like monsters and maps, it would probably be best to ask in #dm-discussion In that channel, you can get answers and advice from other DMs
thanks!

geography 101, there are 3 types of towns
cluster, it’s just a bunch of houses and other community buildings, usually around or near some resource, like a connection of tradeways, a mine, a pond, a forest, etc
liner, a thin line of houses, usually in 4-5 rows, usually along a river bank
scattered, isolated houses slightly apart from each other other, seen in less resourceful areas like deserts

No, the wildfire spirit does not use concentration
Hi how are u
Hello, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me starting because I want to play but Don don’t have a group to play with
If you're looking for a group please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels to find a game.
#looking-for-dm is where you can create a post (using the bot command /looking-for dm) to tell folks you're looking for a DM/group
#looking-for-players is where DMs post looking for players for their games (uses the bot command /looking-for players to create a post there)
#looking-for-community is D&D servers looking for DMs, players, or both (uses the bot command /looking-for community to create a post there)
And then there's #paid-looking-for-game where paid DMs offer up their games (uses the bot command /looking-for paid to create a post there).
When posting in our LFG channels make sure to follow server rules - and please don't share your exact age (see server rules)
If you find a game you are interested in just direct message the poster or use the thread under the game posting to communicate your interest.
Thank u sm
I know I’m gonna sound like a total idiot, but does there exist, dungeons and dragons video games?
like shit, you can buy on steam
Baldur's Gate III is a D&D video game, but there are plenty of others. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dungeons_%26_Dragons_video_games
how do i
how do i join a game without any voice
Search for play-by-post (or PBP) games in #looking-for-players.
they're all full...
Have you checked the D&D servers advertising in #looking-for-community? Many of those also have Play By Post games
You can also look elsewhere besides this server.

Like many brands, they've expanded into other media. Hence why we have #dnd-media!
nope
much like warhammor and other games, they expanded, there are films, videogames, books, and a cartoon show...(dont ask)

Thanks :3
so i've been wanting to get into dnd for a very long time and i have a very basic grasp (played a couple one shots and bg3 if that counts). i was wondering if anybody had any advice for getting more into dnd and getting more knowledgable?

I am completely new. Like completely, always wanted to get into DND haven’t yet mostly because of my age(people see that im a teen and assume I’m a young dumb kid who doesn’t care) I assure I’m not immature been told multiple times that I act older than I am I really am looking to get into DND I have mostly no life lol so I can keep up with the campaign. Just looking for someone to explain something to me really point me in the right direction yk.
I would edit your message, sharing your age is against server rules
That being said, I would start with the Dyno post above as well as #learn-to-play , both of which have newbie resources including a link to the Free Rules. I recommend making a practice character as you read through. Imo it’s important to at least be familiar with the rules (instead of memorize them) before applying for a game. While you may find yourself with a patient DM willing to teach 1-on-1, it takes a lot of the burden off of them if you come with some of the work done already.
Once you feel ready to apply to a game, try using this server with #find-a-game . Of course, it’s important to spread your net wide to maximize your chances of getting into a group. I also recommend using other group-finding sources like your schools local TTRPG club (if they have one), your local library, social media TTRPG groups like Reddit’s r/lfg, etc.
You’ll likely want to apply to games that are explicitly minor friendly, or ask if it’s not specified. Nothing against youth players, some folks just may not be comfortable with doing so.
True, that’s mostly what I’ve run into. Thanks so much btw!
Np!
hey I wanted to start playing dnd but have never played before and don't know where to start
Welcome! The link list a bit further up in the chat has a couple of entry points to get you started based on what you're most interested in.
Hello! I joined a while back but have been too anxious to actually send anything here! 🤣, how is everyone? Am new, just sent my post thing for my second ever game
Welcome!
I'm good. I hope your game goes well.
As do I, I need to distance myself from the Melee mage jokes my friend group now make 🤧🤣
@velvet juniper Welcome, I just joined. I am okay, how about yourself?
Doing well, up late
Same, I havent played D&D in about a year and i miss it. So in my attempts to join a game online i found this discord.
Very understandable
I used roll20 one time in the past. I applied for 2 different campaigns, however, I am nervous that i wont get in. the urge to play is hard to ignore.
Finding a good group is harder than many a boss fight. 😅 But we still try.
The fight never ends, i have played and dmd alot of in person games at my local shops over the years. but im in a new more remote area and now its hard to find people.
After all, who doesn't want to get eaten by a t-rex.
I mean I love One Piece, but I still don't think D&D is even the right system to do it justice.
From experience, there isn't a singular system that does one piece justice
Ive tried
My condolences. But lest we run afoul of off-topic-ing this channel, I recommend #non-dnd-topics
Make it take less than ten minutes for a character to drown 🙃
Right, sorry bout that
More one piece inspired games?
Could suggest it in #moderator-support I suppose
Slim chance though, this server is about D&D. There are plenty of other dfiscord servers that have all sorts of systems.
We need to make a distinction between system and setting here I think. You can still play D&D in a One Piece setting.
Homebrew that might be introduced there is a different topic. And these things should already be mentioned in the game ad.
Im a level 1 warlock, am i allowed to get multiple types of magic at once? Cus i really want unseen servant but its the only conjuration spell there is
You can choose spells from the warlock spell list. I'm not sure what you mean by 'types' of magic.
Like conjuration, concentration etc
Am i asking something really stupid rn 😭i feel like i am
No it's fine. You can pick any spell that is on the warlock spell list.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Level1WarlockSpells
Regardless of spell school
Tysm! Didnt know that
Spell schools aren't usually that important, it's more about theme than limitations. There are some exceptions, but these will be called out specifically.
Where can I find out more about religions in DnD?
The Dungeon Master Guide and Playser's Handbook are typically the better options
Just be aware that DnD doesn't really do religions. Instead there are multiple gods who are very real and each of them has their own dogma, allies and enemies.
And it's very possible for people to worship multiple gods or just pray to whichever deity they need guidance from.
I would say D&D 5th edition doesn't really get into the nitty-gritty of religions beyond high-level "they worship this deity who covers this domain".
Generally in the game it doesn't usually have rules/mechanics (exception: Mythic Odyssey of Theros piety system)
But yeah, if you want more about official D&D lore regarding some of the deities/religions in D&D you can check with folks in #dnd-lore
I just started playing and wanted to find out if there are any ways to try getting into the lore and learning how to start playing. I can't buy the books and don't really understand the website UI (are there any videos online or blogs that could help). I also wanted to know if there is anything in specific I'm not supposed to do as a player.
Just to make I have understood you have you started a game already?
I joined a campaign and the DM helped me make a character but we haven't done any sessions
Is this an adventure that the DM created or are they running a pre-made adventure?
They are making an adventure of their own (I think its inspired by the Oddesy)
Some DMs like to alter the original lore of monsters. You can always just ask for information as you learn more about the world and its monsters, leaving your knowledge at the mercy of your character's intelligence and experiences. However what you can always do is ask the DM if he or she is comfortable with you reading up on the various creatures that fill the world.
I think that is all there is to say.
okay
Project Sigil? Some, yeah. There's a channel over here: #sigil-vtt-archive
It's still in closed alpha last I checked.
I'm not sure. There's a game shop down the road from my work. Been in there a couple times. I'd like to get into DnD cause it's seems SO COOL. I saw that book on there on the shelf width other DnD books. My 2 boys are super into transformers but young.
That's a different RPG game system
This server is for the official D&D TTRPG game system
Oooooook. So it's different from DnD?
Yep - they may use similar game mechanics (D20 system) but they are different games (I actually don't know what the Transformer TTRPG system uses)
Looks like it does use D20 game mechanics. - but yeah, it's a different game.
I havent even gotten into a group game yet, im so new to DnD. I would like to get my boys into it to have something they can put their imaginations into and let it run wild safely.
Well if you do want to check out D&D there are free rules which has everything you need to get started: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I downloaded the rules last night off the app dookicker. Just trying to find the spare time to read it. Single dad, lol
Thank you, noob! I'd do the highlight thing but idk how
I play D&D with my kids and if your kids are into story telling, fantasy, heroes, and magic they will likely enjoy D&D.
if i want to play dnd with frends im new to it and i dont know any rules shood i use chat gpt as our dm or shood i try to somhow lern them i think ai is a good opcion cuz it will be through online
They are, did you start with yours young? One of mine isn't old enough to read yet, but he's pretty smart with figuring out the way situations work.
I would not recommend an AI to be a DM as it will miss too much nuance and social cues and also it will likely mess the rules up worse than a new Dungeon Master.
whats the bare minimum of rules to have a fun first time in dnd ? like what shood i read
They started pretty early (3-4 years old). For younger kids you may want to simplify the mechanics to "roll the d6 and tell me how many dots you got".
The free basic rules is enough to to start and play D&D:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
ty
I'd focus on learning how a character sheet works and d20 rolls and general game mechanics
Hey
i mean i have played like 5 secions but didint pay much atencion to the spels and things like that so like i get the rols cherecters not so much
I am new
It may help to also watch folks playing a game of D&D via a YouTube or Twitch stream and seeing how the DM sets a scene and asks players what their character does and then what kind of dice rolls the DM asks for, etc.

do u have any recomendacions ?
Deborah Ann Woll did a little bit as part of her interview with Jon Bernthal.
Ginny Di has also done a video of a game she did with her rookie parents, but it's more of a post-mortem of the thing and less capturing it in the moment.
i think i have herd of her
She has a number of great videos for beginners that are generally mechanics-free.
Dungeon Dudes Dungeons of Drakkenheim, while a homebrew setting and with some homebrew rules, is actually pretty straight when it comes to the official D&D rules. Also they keep things pretty PG compared to some other popular streams - like I can watch/listen to them with my kids around and not be worried.
oh i have herd like theres a story wich u can bild up from do u think thats a good idea
I'd recommend new DMs use a prewritten adventure to start with so they can focus on the game rules/mechanics and managing the game without the added overhead of preparing and running their own adventure.
prewritten campaigns are great for new players (if thats what you're asking). My first time DM'ing I ran Lost Mines of Phandelvar for my friends.
where can i find it
are you playing inperson or online?
i wood be tring to host the campain online

oh olso i have a qescion if ur an elf do u only sleep 2h like u medicate and u can play during the night ( i know i made speling mistakes idk how to spell it )
Does resistance to a damage type make me completely immune to it?
No, resistance means you take half damage from a source.
Alright ty
You mean trance as an elf? Sure, you could do anything with the 'saved' time.
It's 4 hours though, not 2.
Elves don't need to sleep at all. They can meditate for 4 hours and gain the same effects as sleeping for 8 hours.
oh sory for the mistake but isint that qite op beacuse when i played the 2 elfs had the most xp
I'm not really sure how a player is gaining experience without the other players. In the vast majority of games, all the players adventure at the same time.
like when the others are sleping and thei go fighting or hunting
Typically, there's not much fighting you can get up to in 4 hours, and it's often considered rude to try to progress plot without all the players being involved.
Ultimately, the DM is the one who gates what encounters the players face. It's entirely within their power to say "you try to find something to fight in the 4 hours you're not meditating, but find nothing."
(Not to mention that trying to get into combat by yourself is a very fast way to having your character die with no backup available!)
Remember that DnD isn't like an MMO. Very, very few DMs are going to be ok with your character walking into the woods and hunting boars for 4 hours every day to "farm experience".
Sounds like a case of Dm favortism and Bs... EVERYONE GAINS THE SAME XP, no one should be above the rest of the party...Ever... But w/e each to his or her own.
Also, your DM might not be using XP at all, instead preferring story based advancement.
yea now most of the pleayers dont want to play with him
i dont thinks cuz he adds up the xp even if ur not in the story line like even if ur out hunting or smf
It's certainly one way of doing things, but it wouldn't be my cup of tea.
how should i get into playing dnd with my friends? any recommendations?

I have like a character question, so what is like a normal like HP, CON, DEX, stuff like that for each class? Or can u multi class like Cleric/rouge or Druid/Solider?
What are your stats
Wait a second this question is waaaay too general
Like
You're super new to 5e aren't you
Id reccomend taking a quick look through these
Yea I have watched my friends play back in high school and I got interested but never really went into it cause I don’t have a group
I see
Hello
you can multiclass though we generally don't recommend it for folks who are brand new as it takes balancing and asks you to understand two classes at once rather than one.
CON is related to your HP (hit points, health points) - the class itself tells you what their hit die is. (the hit die determines how much health you have and how much you can heal on short rests)
sorry for the dumb question, what is the type of game called "play by post"? does it mean you play whenever there is a post so everyone has to meet up at time of post?
It's playing by text messages/email/forum posts
oh interesting, thank you
In the even older days before email, internet, and other online chat tools it was quite literally sending mail to the DM, the DM consolidating all the information then mailing out a letter to all the players.
I’ve heard of “live” games via text, but I think it’s more common for play to happen asynchronously.

Thanks

I need to join a game that is opened to new players PLEASE
Read through #find-a-game carefully to see how to use our Looking For Game channels
Many groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as they've put in effort to learn
So I'd recommend giving the D&D free rules a review: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Question about DND Beyond- is there no way to make a character sheet for a race that is not part of the core rules without spending an asinine amount of money? TwT

Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
^ You can use the homebrew tools to attempt to recreate something you already own in a physical book (just can't publish it and make it accessible to the general public - remember that any homebrew you create can be used by your and folks in your campaign without publishing)
Server rules ask folks keep the looking for game/group requests in the proper channels.
my bad
Oh kk
need some help with dnd and foundry. Can anyone help me?
sure
#third-party-tools-archive might be able to help you with foundry questions :) But Foundry also has its own discord iirc where they can go more in depth

Please keep game coordination/recruiting or advertising to the dedicated channels please.

How do I begin?
Well I'd recommend looking at the bot post just right above yours and check out the links there
Ok
Do some reading of the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ok
Watch some D&D streams/podcasts to see how the game kind of runs
Maybe try your hand at making a character sheet
Then when you have a rough idea of how the game works and feel comfortable enough, go find a group to play with.

Do we use roll20 on this server
People use different platforms. It'll be up to the group you join.
I've not tried it yet
Here's an article that goes over some of the tools folks use to play D&D online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
I have not played D&D in years, I have really struggled to find a virtual table that fits my time zone as most games seem to be in the U.S and Canada. I am from the Uk. In the past I had used roll20 but the game listing board can be hard to navigate. Can anyone recommend a place where this can be searched with more ease or offer any advice? Thanks in advance.
So my buddy is looking to get me into D&D with his group so I joined this to hopefully get some help making my very first character
I've got a bunch of venues to search through in my bio. Sites like Reddit and Facebook specifically have UK-based D&D groups that might point the way. Also, check in with any local games/hobby shops or libraries; they may have the inside scoop on community in the area.
Can anyone help me out with this?
Thank you
Where on there can I ask for help?
We can help out here with the basics. Have you read the free rules yet?
I have started but haven’t finished
Is there anything in particular you're stuck on? We can certainly help if you have specific questions
It has a list of commands fill out the stuff and it’ll post
Note there are more players than gms
So can we discuss this in DMs or no?
I'd prefer not
That’s fine then
Tbh the only things my buddy helped me with is choosing what race I wanted to play for use so I’m still completely unaware of most of the rules and how to actually play
That’s true

All I was really told is I could make a small Tabaxi, give it a warhammer and let it ride on a mastiff and that’s what got me to want to play
True
But I’d like to at the very least make the character for future use
And so I have an excuse to draw a cat with a warhammer
Tbh I really just need someone to explain the rules and maybe help me make my first character
I enjoy tiny war criminals
Unfortunately, this server gets dozens of new people every day, so we can't talk anyone through the rules in a 1:1 setting.
Thankfully though, the basic rules are free, so you can read through them any time you'd like. If you have specific questions as you go through the text, we can happily answer those.
Yeah the fbr is the way to go. And beginner friendly games are also good way to learn.
Hello i am new to D&D can someone teach me the game or so?

Are goblins allowed to use battle axes or great axe?
Any creature can use any weapon.
Allowed to use, yes.
Thing is, a greataxe is a heavy weapon, so a goblin, being small size, would have disadvantage on using it.
Note that something like a Greataxe does have the heavy property, which means a creature that has less than 13 Strength will have some penalties to attacking with it
Oh, that's another 2024 change I missed.
Both are true, depending on your ruleset
(My answer is correct for the updated 2024 rules, the lord of the pit's is correct for the 2014 ruleset.)
(Finally, one person who has the reference)
Is this also for new DMs?
