hi
Idk what to say now
you got any questions
Sure I wanna start playing dnd digitally but I’m not sure where to start
will people often get upset with me if i go in only having a general idea of how to play, i learn a lot faster and better from experience than reading because i'm ADHD, so it's hard for me to like read a whole bunch of stuff before playing bcz i can't rly absorb information like that
it looks like #find-a-game is where you start, i also don't really know where so i started making a character sheet online
I have a few online character sheet

ah, okay. now i just have to find a group lol (i know where the channel is already)
yeah, i might struggle a lot there lol, i've heard a lot about how it is hard to get into D&D, especially since i have a hard time getting comfortable with people, and don't really have a friend to jump into it with xP
no game stores in ur area?
My nearest is the next town overs and joining into complains irl can be pretty stressful
I have joined a after school campaign tho
How would one find these people
Alright 👍
Hello! Very new player here!

I was too distracted to think about joining this server to play d&d
Everyone I ask just says #find-a-game but I’ve been on there and I’m still very confused
how to play bard tho
Read the information and instructions (carefully) in that channel (#find-a-game ) to learn how to use our Looking For Game (LFG) channels. Soliciting or organizing games outside the LFG channel is off-topic and will be moderated.
What do you think is a good damage cantrip for an archfey warlock flavor wise? Don't want to minmax, just some ideas what feels good. Still Eldritch Blast? (2024 rules)
Good question for #character-discussion - this channel is more for new to D&D folks to get started learning the official game rules and core mechanics.
Sure! Thanks!
im still learning about the game because i just got the players handbook two days ago
when filling out the dnd character sheet what would allies and organizations be \
You can leave that blank for now. Ideally you’d work with your DM to fill in that part, either as part of your backstory, background, or as you meet people throughout the campaign

these are a lot of new terms
would i also leave treasures empty
Yeah - that's things your character will accumulate through adventuring (stuff that isn't gold, weapons, or things tracked elsewhere on your sheet)
Hello how’s everything going
Any named NPC you include in your backstory is a good thing to fill in here. I always struggle with remembering names, especially those I came up with several months ago when I made the character.
new player here whats up
Welcome welcome!
thank you!
Hey
Hi, new to playing but not to lore and rules. Big fan of “Crap Guide” and “Fools Gold”. Hoping to join some campaigns and have fun. Nice to meet you all
amm hello
I have a bit of a loose understanding of the game mechanics, just have a little trouble understanding the difference between 5e and others before it, not that I don't believe there isn't one, I just have trouble understanding a bit, and figured it important to know before playing.
I'm pretty good in the writing department, not to toot my own horn, but I've never managed to play a game before, closest I've gotten was making a character for one but unfortunately it never came to be.

so what is casting magic by leadership and deotion
loyalty and devoted support means you are getting magical powers from a faith or a higher being right
The editions of D&D are like fundamental system refreshes- they retain the core ideas but the cogs and wheels have been changed out. You’ll find similar terminology but ultimately each edition is largely incompatible with other editions. Consider each as their own TTRPG entirely. As a player you’ll only really need to know 1 edition, which will almost always be 5e since that’s the most recent.
As an analogy, I’d compare the difference between any 2 editions to the transition from Fallout 2 to Fallout 3 or GTA 2 to GTA 3.
Is there a particular source you’re getting this from? Or are you asking how Clerics & Paladins typically get their powers
Ahh, okay, yeah. That paints a much better picture in my head. I apologize if any questions I might have are a little obvious.
aaahh the dndbeyond.com thing
I'm going to go over this firstly. I appreciate it a bunch.
Can you link it? My apologies I just can’t find what you’re referring to
By and large, 1E and 2E are inter compatible with minimal/no changes. The same applies to 5E-2014 and 5E-2024. I think the same is true for 3rd and 3.5E, but that’s the era I skipped.
I see, I see, that does make it easier for me to understand
More detailed discussion belongs in #dnd-elder-editions
Alrighty
where should i start to learn about dnd should i watch a video or read about it somewhere
whats the best way to find a group to play with online?

Hi and welcome! The #learn-to-play channel is filled with a bunch of tips and resources for learning how to play the game. Particularly you'll want to give the free rules a read through. If you have any questions about anything you read feel free to post them here
The server's LFG channel in the above bot post is a good start. To get as many options as quickly as possible I recommend looking in a few places at once. Namely the listings on Roll20 and the various facebook pages and subreddits dedicated to D&D LFG.
Can someone check my character sheet, I wanna make sure it's okay before I try to join a campaign
For sure, feel free to post a link to it here
Can I send it to you directly?
I'd rather not tbh
you'll get more feedback from more people if you post it here anyway
I'd recommend uploading the PDF on google drive or another trusted file sharing site and sending a share link to that
Got it posting it now
Being honest the backstory may be a little unoriginal and cringe
So yeah
Do I got to accept the share request?
yeah
Alright
Alright I got it, just one sec
how do you play dungeons and dragons here?
A few things that you need to fix up:
- To multiclass into a class you need to meet the multiclass prereqs of your original class and the class you're multiclassing into as per this Multiclassing Prerequisite rules
- There is a text error in your Second Wind feature description
Some things to consider that will likely improve your play experience:
- Currently your move speed is 20ft because you do not meet the Strength requirements of your Heavy Armor. You will get your full 30ft of movement if your Strength was 13. You may also want to future-proof your character by having 15 Strength so you can one day wear Full-Plate Armor.
- Currently your Dexterity isn't serving you too well. I would recommend either choosing to use a Rapier and Medium Armor instead of a Longsword and Chain Mail Armor to make use of your Dexterity, or dedicate those points you have in Dexterity into your other stats that are more useful to you (such as strength and charisma)
This discord is only for talking about D&D and getting people together for games in the #find-a-game channel. There's no voice channels to facilitate actual online play sorry
oh i see, thanks
So pretty much, Meet the requirements to multiclass, figure out the text error, and change up my equipment and stats
Can you look at my character sheet again because I made the slight changes and I think it's alright
Hi
Hello
So I'm a complete newb to DND. I have like the basics of how to make a character down but yeah I don't know where to go from here. I have played other systems before but I haven't engaged with DND before now.
What class are you
You could get discussion and feedback on your character ideas in #character-discussion , talk about all things D&D (or be redirected to a specific channel) in #dnd-discussion , or check out who's hosting what in #looking-for-players .
Sorcerer seemed interesting so that is what I would like to play

Hi all! Newish to DnD recently been going to the London DnD group and had a fun session yesterday looking forward to doing more DnD and if any of the London DnD group are on here as well hello!
Hii!! I'm very new to dnd like I just started to learn about it today
This server is also for asking questions right?
Yep. If you have any questions about how to play or anything like that, you can ask them here
Okay!!
Can you play DND if you don't have the dice? Like by using a number generator or by picking up pieces of paper with the numbers written on it?
There are definitely free dice rollers like apps
Heck you can even just use google itself for it, they have one when you google specific dice rolls!
If you have DnD beyond it does dive plus your modifiers I’ve used it the last games I’ve played
hey. not sure if this'll be the correct channel for this.
I've been buying the books and reading D&D for 35 years and played my first game a few weeks ago. with my 2nd 'one-shot' coming up.
I've recently starting reading the Drizz't novels and have always wanted to play a Ranger and I want to replicate Drizzt at level 3. Chat GPT is helping me (kinda). However I have a QUESTION:
If I dual wield two scimitars with two handed fighting. Can I use Hunters Mark in the same turn as the dual wielding?
I can't seem to post a picture here. I assume it's not allowed.
Hunter’s Mark costs a bonus action to cast, and a bonus action to switch targets after the first one is killed.
Since you can only use a single bonus action on your turn, you’d have to choose between those and the bonus action attack.
Scimitar does have the Nick weapon mastery property, which allows you to make that off hand attack as part of the initial Attack action, though, so wouldn’t that free up the bonus action for hunter’s mark?
If they’re playing with the 2024 rules, yeah.
Thank you. How mest to make it work?
Maybe big bigger MOBS and open with Hunter and Bow?
from app:
Two-Weapon Fighting
When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon, and you don't add your ability modifier to the extra attack's damage unless that modifier is negative. For example, you can attack with a Shortsword in one hand and a Dagger in the other using the Attack action and a Bonus Action, but you don't add your Strength or Dexterity modifier to the damage roll of the Bonus Action unless that modifier is negative.
oh I see:
Nick. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
Are you using the 2024 rules? The scimitar has a mastery property that overrides the general rules for two weapon fighting. If your table is using those rules you could do it.
DM is allowing either set.
So... Yes 🙂
Does that mean I can't use 'Nick'? or does Nick allow me to use the extra attack as part of the initial?
ie... am I still losing something?
What you’ve quoted above is a mix of 2014 and 2024.
They're both from 2024 I think. as I dont have 2014 on the app/account
If you’re going with 2024, you’ll want to reference the weapon’s Light property instead.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Light
But that makes it NOT work with Hunter right? Whereas the 'Nick' makes it work?
Forgive me but I don't see how refercing it helps (unless it was not meant to)
its not a game break but I want to understand it. It's a one-shot and there is likely to be no long rest . So I'll only have two HM to make.
but..... I really like the idea of this and may run it perma.
Do you beleive i can open with hunter, attack with both weapons and apply nick?
It’s effectively the same rule as before; it just has a different name.
The way I read the 2024 rules is you’d start your turn, bonus action hunter’s mark, then use your attack action to swing with your scimitar. Assuming you have the mastery with the scimitar you could then swing with your off-hand scimitar thanks to the Nick property as part of that same attack action.
Thank you @dapper gulch & @smoky adder . I'll have a chat with the DM.
Thanks
hello everyone! i have been playing dnd for a while but im neew to the server so whats up!
Welcome!
where could i find AL rules downloadable in pdf?
You can find them here: #al-news-updates message
is there a PDF version of the new 2024 "Free Rules" for players? working on putting together handouts for "try D&D" sessions that I'll be running at local game store next year
Not officially. Hopefully there will be one, but with D&D Beyond's existence, I'm a little skeptical.
Hey would someone wanna help teach me a but about dragon lore in Faerun/dnd? My dm changed my backstory a bit and made it so I'm actually a dragon, who was banished by Bahumat and has lived through centuries of a reincarnation cycle. He's meant to prove himself as a selfless hero among mortals before his power can be restored. But I know basically nothing about dragons at ALL other than "Tiamat=evil god dragon" and "Bahumat=good god dragon"
Also so aasimar just look human? I just threw some glowing eyes on my character and called him an aasimar
Where should i use the command for looking for a game?
Any channel you can type in.
Oh thanks
Oh awesome okay ty!

Hey everyone! I’m totally new to DnD and I know a few basic things! I have a character all prepared and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in an extra player:)
#find-a-game is where to begin the search for other groups/players on this server.
Anyone played as a hamster race before? I’m playing with a group for the first time ever and I’m trying to create a 3ft tall hamster whose class is an artificer, but I can’t find any really good homebrewed races for the miniature giant space hamsters. There’s a race for emperor hamsters which I may end up going with but it’s not the best
If you are looking for advice on a homebrew race, the best place to post about that would be #homebrew
I think so, not sure if there was a pre-existing race. I’ll post in there though so I’m more likely to find something. Thank you
There are no official playable races for playing as a hamster
Some third party books have playable races that are based on other small rodents, such as Mice, Squirrels and Hedgehogs. You could consider playing as one of those and reflavoring it to be a hamster. But, homebrew content and third party content are both outside the scope of this channel. Its highly recommended that beginners should stick to only the official races while learning the game
Gotcha 🤔 Ill check out what I can about reflavoring some of them and if I hit a dead end just stick to the official ones. Thanks again
You can also consider reflavoring an official race as well. If the only thing you really want is to look like a hamster, then you can play any of the official small races like halfling or gnome and simply say you are hamster, while using their normal stats and abilities. Many of these races have abilities that relate to being small and nimble that could feel right at home for a rodent character. The only thing that would be missing is if you wanted to have a strong bite attack or something like that
Y’all hear me out for my first ever character Gonome fighter chaotic neutral named dwarf
So I’m starting a campaign with all newbies including myself, and one asked me what level we are going to start at, now I was thinking level 1 just so everyone and get used to the basics and everything but then I was thinking we could maybe start at level 3. My question is how do you balance encounters and make sure they don’t mollywhopped in the process
First, I like your instinct of starting at level 1 for exactly that reason. As for encounter balance, the easiest way for you will likely be to use the encounter tool on DDB or Kobold Fight Club. They will let you input your party size/level and see what difficulty a fight would be against varying CRs of threats.
Oo thanks for that info
I was thinking the level 3 part so I don’t accidentally tpk with a random encounter
Less squish to squash
Something I do at lower levels is give my NPCs a reason why they would want to take the party alive. Perhaps the cultists need living sacrifices, the predators want to bring live prey back for their young, or the bandits want ransom hostages
I want to join a campaign that plays on weekends only. Is there any starting with that
Btw I've never played before
can anyone teach me dungeons and dragons please? 🙏
Hi! The best place to learn are from the resources and advice in #learn-to-play. If you can do your best to try to educate yourself on the rules first, that will put others in a much better position to help iron out anything else that you dont understand. Feel free to post those questions as they come up in this channel 🙂
Im sure theres a table out there that will fit your schedule, its just a matter of finding them. Were you thinking of online or in-person play?
Online
Wassup
Me too
it said i don't have permission to send messages in this channel
I'm pretty sure you just click the links
He ask a question earlier
For finding online games you can check out the listings in #find-a-game, Roll20, and the various facebook pages and subreddits dedicated to getting games together. The above channel also has a useful FAQ
I just bought the Stormwreck Isle starter edition and was reading through all the booklets, and finding myself a bit overwealmed. Especially in terms of combat, there just seems to be a lot of things to keep track of. My only other experience playing tabletop games was Blades in the Dark, which I played a game and also DMed a session for-- I really liked that since so much is abstracted it seemed like a lot less work for the DM and the gameplay flowed very fast. No number crunching needed) Even though this D&D starter kit is designed for that purpose, I'm worried my first experienced with D&D shouldn't be dming.
Maybe I just need to find a one-shot online to join as a player and get some experience with that side of the game before attempting to DM. I'm wondering if anyone has advice for me on how to keep approuching this, without overwealming myself.
This is where I’m at too I’ve been doing so much research and tips videos, have a folder with cheat sheets, a notebook and sticky’s. Have the PHB DMG and MM with me at work tonight and will try to flesh out a beginning adventure and encounters and at session 0 I plan on running through a checklist of what everyone is expecting to get out of the story as well as character building and using their back stories to help with world building for the first playable session.
That’s the plan, I’m nervous and know I’ll mess up but that’s what retconning is for.
I’ve never done it either but one tip I’d think to utilize is you don’t have to memorize the whole adventure in one sitting because players will never complete (unless a one shot) it in one session. Make cliff notes of information on sticky notes to jog your memory on some info that you may forget and make book marks for quick reference points
honestly its all the combat rules and numbers to track that overwealm me much more than the story. I think the narrative elements of the book are good enough to get me started without much worries
If folks want to talk DM shop, we have #dm-discussion where you can pick the brains and collective wisdom of other DMs
How much learning is there if you want to start playing dnd?
Generally enough to know how to make a character sheet and understand what your character can do, then the basics of D20 test rolls, attack rolls, saving throws, and damage dice. If you have those roughly down, you should be alright in most games.

What’s 5e stand for?
Fifth Edition
it started in 2014, but is getting a rules revision around the end of current year 2024.
We already have the updated version of the player's handbook, and some have early access to the dungeon masters guide.
Still later, we'll get the new monster manual.
Is that most updated version? I’m looking for the classes and subclasses
That is the current version of D&D
the 2024 versions of 5e stuff will be the most updated versions yeah
Currently, the only thing "competing" with an updated version of itself is the PHB, player's handbook.
In like 2 weeks there'll be the DMG out for everyone, the dungeon master's guide.
Otherwise all the other D&D rulebooks still are as up to date as can be. Especially on D&DBeyond.
I have the race figured out, but I’m stuck on classes and subclasses because I’m used to playing World of Warcraft. Like for example in World of Warcraft, I mainly play as a Worgen (race) Frost (specialization) Death Knight (class).
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Is anyone running a campaign and is looking for new players i would like to join in please?

Me too please!!
This seems like a dumb question but are there official races and classes outside of the phb?
Yeah, there is 1 additional class called the Artificer which you can find in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. There are also additional races in Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse.
Is that a physical or digital only thing
They are both sourcebooks that you could purchase physically, or digitally on DDB.
Well neat thank you
Hello, I just started and I made a character, sort of on the fly. But after I'm done. How do I play? Online i can just like this and in person i need to buy a DnD set right? Sorry of its answered already
Found them and wow that’s a lot of added content holy smokes
Regardless of whether you're playing online or in-person you will need a way to roll dice, take notes and refer to your character sheet. For online play all those things can be done digitally (although Id recommend a physical notepad for notes). In person you'll need a set of game dice, and a notepad, along with either a printed off character sheet or your phone to view the sheet digitally
Thank you for the info
Is a beginner one-shot mission a good plan to give a party (2 PC) a taste of DnD or would I be better off finding a good campaign??
Playing a oneshot adventure for a pair of players first experience with D&D is a great idea. Not only does it remove any fear of having to commit to a full campaign, it also ensures they end the session with a victory and you dont run the risk of purchasing an expensive hardcover (most one shots are $3-5)
I need advice- my first campaign is about to start and my dm asked if I wanted to tweak my backstory a bit (I originally had blood hunter, until I realized that wasn’t traditional and quickly created a disgraced cleric with barely a real backstory) to better fit the story. I offered to let him do this, because I didn’t really know my character much, and said it would tie in with the overarching story of the campaign, as we’re fighting against a bunch of dragons. The new backstory that I half heartedly agreed to (I am a people pleaser) was
“I used to be a dragon under the leadership of Bahamut, until he banished me into an aasimar body for my hubris and now i walk the mortal plane, as he judges my virtue in this lesser form, and I attempt to prove myself.” There are some more details but that’s basically it. Anybody have some tips for how to roleplay as a centuries old dragon?
Ik this is probably a dumb question, but am I a jerk if I text him and ask to swap characters? I feel like he kinda likes this one (because it’s entirely his character), and I’d need a little help making the new character, I’d want a harenhog rogue I think, but it feels weird to ask him to scrap that last character and the help me make a new one. He’s a paid dm. We had session 0 on sunday, and our first real game is this sunday
This is my literal first campaign, first character, first game. And I just don’t know how to roleplay some ancient banished dragon. Also my first time roleplaying. But I also don’t wanna make him redo a bunch of stuff, is this too late?
You should at least bring it up I'd say
Having a chatacter you actually want to play is a big part of playing fun
If he's a good DM and likes the other character (which somehow is his character?), then he could still use it as an NPC in the story 😎
i completely forgot to ask my DM what our campaign plot even is and made a Haunted One Chaotic Good character with a warlock pact in a campaign that seems like it’s kind of cowboy old west themed kind of story LOL
and this character is like, a fully shrouded Warlock/Fighter Drow with a revenge based backstory (i made this character before realizing the idea was pretty much a copy paste of Percy from Vox Machina) 😭
I'm surprised your dm didn't say anything looking at your character
i guess in a way she can kind of fit in any campaign besides Sci-Fi she just has a big pact weapon and is a Fighter, her backstory is just about wanting revenge against lolth, and to return home to a place she doesn’t remember at all
A ten minute spell with no components is so funny
You just idle animation for ten minutes and a horse appears
-# (greater steed spell)
I don't play very often so I'm not up to date with the new rules. I'll be playing a game next week, can you give some suggestions of what are some strong but not broken builds for a lvl 1 one shot.
In all honesty, there's not much you can "build" at level 1. You pick a class, a species, and a background, but that's it. You can just focus on making something that will feel fun to play, because there's not really any optimization to be done anyways
If talking strictly the 2024 rules then no, not yet. However, you can use the official supplements such as Tasha's Guide which are mostly compatible.
same goes for those you find in Mordekainen Presentes Monsters of the Multiverse
or Fizbans Treasury of Dragons
The 2024 rules are not a new version of the game. It is just as legal to use source books outside the 2024 PHB as it was to use them when we had the 2014 PHB. They are still supplement books for the same game.
The only real way to screw up a level 1 character is to do something like dump your primary stat, or maybe have no damage cantrips on a full caster
And even those can work if you plan for it
I was mostly asking because a player sent me a githzerai monk and wasn’t sure if they were considered official offering or not, and I told my players that if they have a race or something not in the PHB it shouldn’t be a problem as long as it’s in a related source book and they have an info sheet on their character I can reference (other than the character sheet itself). So thanks for the info I saw the Tasha’s cauldron and modrenkainen monster book but wasn’t sure how it placed in the rules/lore so thank you for the clarification
Hey. Question for you guys.
The pre-made adventure books such as 'Shattered Oblisk', 'curse-of-strahd'....... state that they have adventures for characters, example, levels 1-10.
Does that mean it'll take characters through progression from level 1 to 10 (approximately). or are the adventures shorter than that and you can just through some level 7's at it?
I've been reading and learning about DnD for 35 odd years but am just about to play only my 2nd one-shot this week. My kids ahve expressed an interest in play and I was wondering if I purchase one of those books, will it take us through the whole journey?
If an adventure says its for levels 1-10 that means the adventure starts at level 1 and ends at level 10
Understood. Are these types of adventure books easy to scale down for just a few players? Example. I have two kids but the Mrs has said she will almsot certainly NOT play
Potentially - how comfortable are you with the core D&D game rules and mechanics and DM'ing?
and a follow up question. Is there any, even approximately, a time scale for playing the adventure. Example if we play a 4 hour session. Are we good for 20 sessions??
thats a very good question. I'm only about to play my 2nd game this week. (one-shot). But I've owned the books for years and have read them many times (kinda like a novel).
I've never DM'd.
You're playing with your family?
Its pretty hard to say. Everyone goes through the game at their own pace. But for a point of reference, I played through Waterdeep Dragonheist, which is level 1-5, and that took a full year. Once a week, 4 or more hours per session
oh really...... so generally, the books are great value for money??
I didnt want to spend £50 and only get two weekends out of it.......
An adventure that is levels 1-10 should take you maybe 50-100 session depending on what pace your players move at, and how much they engage with the story
but its pretty impossible to say for sure
wow.... I wasn't expecting that....... it's almost to long. I was expecting a couple of sessions.
so..... as a very approximate measure. about 7.5 sessions per level?
I've found the adventure books - even the ones I don't specifically run - to be useful even as a source of inspiration/materials for other adventures, both official and homebrew, that I run. But ultimately the value is a very individual determination and your mileage may vary.
any recomendations on the best ones out there for new characters??
Lost Mines of Phandelvar Shattered Obelisk, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, and Wild Beyond the Witchlight would be some I'd consider pretty good for new folks.
The amount of time you spend at each level scales as you level up, so its not really a worthwhile metric to measure them by number of sessions. It takes 300xp to get from level 1 to level 2, and it takes 16,000xp to get from level 9 to level 10
Understood. Like most PC games.
Is 300xp attainable in the first session (baring session zero)? Could be exciting for the kids to level up in the first session (though not without complications I imagine) (sorry for all the questions - just super excited that the books last that long)
Yes, it typically takes between 1 and 1.5 sessions to reach level 2
great great. So I just need to read up a little on how to scale it for the two kids
are there resources/help in this dsicord for that kinda thing?
or just YT Dungeon Dues or someting. (or the girl that does it.... cant remember her name)
The girl you're thinking of is probably Ginny Di
Most D&D adventures are built for a party of 3-6 players
So you can use that frame of reference to adjust the scale of encounters down (remove an enemy or two or three).
Also don't be afraid to have enemies run away or add new enemies as needed.
"Running D&D for kids" isn't really a topic I've put much thought into or discussed on this server very often. I'm sure there are resources out there for exactly that, but its just not in my personal sphere, so to speak
thanks @fallen surge. the kids are XYZ and fairly mature. It was more for me 🙂 how do scale it down from, as @echo kelp said, from 3-6 down to 2
Yeah take a look at the encounters and see what monsters are involved. With just 2 players, I'd remove 2-3 monsters at first and see how things play out. You may need to adjust things as you get a feel for how your players play the game as well.
I do most of my scaling by feel, but the big things I've found you have to watch with only 2 players is action economy and healing
If there's a lot more enemies than players things can spiral fast, same if someone goes down without a way to heal them
@fallen surge & @echo kelp than you so much for taking the time to answer my many questions
Agreed. this was my worry. With only two it may need both of them to be healing tpyes. Druid/Cleric/Paladin type
The Dungeon Masters Guide does contain information on how to balance encounters based on how many players you have. Typically when you purchase a pre-made adventure, you shouldn't have to worry about balancing the encounters because they come pre-made, but it could be a good idea to double check those encounters against the guidelines in the DMG to see how they would be for a 2 person party.
Alternatively, the book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything contains a system called Sidekicks, which are meant to be NPCs that can help the party. One of the recommended ways to use sidekicks is if you don't have enough players to hit that 4-6 sweet spot, you can add a sidekick or two to balance things back out. My only concern with that would be since you and your players are new to the game, adding a sidekick would just be one more thing you need to manage, which might add too much "metal load" to the learning process.
Mind edting this to remove exact ages? It's part of our server rules to not solicit or share personally identifying information and sharing exact age is one of those things.

Damn
I think this game would be more complicated than I thought it would be
I may just jump in with the investment. The books, even dispite never playing, have provided great enterainment and interest over the years. I've just ordered the P&D DM book.
Though I can't quite work out when it'll arrive or when the digital version will be available.
I'll take a look at Tashas C.
What do you mean by "the P&D DM Book?"
Pungeons and dragons
Physical and digital
Quick question
Can I roleplay as a doctor with a bionic arm and perform surgeries to my teammates?
hello
Ah gotcha. So that would probably mean you ordered the new 2024 Dungeon master's guide, which releases on the 12th
You can use one of the official D&D classes (say like a cleric) and flavor it to be like that with your DM's permission. Flavor is where you describe it like that but don't change the game mechanics.
Welcome!
Would that allow me to slowly uncover the lore of my character as I wish?
Only your DM can answer that!
Can I add lore to my character? Is the main question
hi thank you sorry im aware theres another conversation ongoing rn so ill ask questions later haha
You can go on
You'd normally work with your DM and the rest of the players in your group to decide what the expectations and boundaries are for character lore.
You can add a backstory. Everything else is subject to DM approval. They run the entire game for you, after all, so they decide what is and isn't allowed regarding story aspects for the player characters.
D&D is a collaborative storytelling RPG game and the expectation is you work with everyone else playing at the table to ensure everyone has fun.
I see
Having a "bionic arm" might be difficult, since D&D is a fantasy game, so there isn't any amount of sci-fi tech, but you could have some sort of magical equivalent, perhaps.
D&D's character creation process has very clear rules and guidelines about what you can do and what powers and abilities you have. You can create any sort of backstory you want, but the point of the backstory is to explain the choices you made in the character creation process, not the other way around. You can't gain new powers, abilities, items, etc just by putting them in your backstory. If you want your character to be a doctor, that is fine. But your medical ability will still be determined by the medicine skill, and your healing abilities will be chosen through the normal character creation process.
Is the dnd world the same for all campaigns?
Yes. But I have a monthly subscripton to D&D-B so should get it earlier.... but the US and UK versions of the website don't speak to eachother very well
Nope. There are several "official" worlds to choose from, which is where all the published campaigns take place, but DMs can also create their own worlds if they wish
That's good to point out
Do historical events take place in these worlds?
Like wars maybe
Sure. Each world has its own history and lore
Can my character be involved in the history of the world
Like a war survivor?
its okay i actually just found the answer to my question in another channel haha but thank you
If you have any questions about the D&D Beyond Website specifically, you post them in #ddb-support and then a moderator or other user can help you out
That would be something to discuss with your DM
im also slightly new to dnd but not completely new like i know the basics and have played the starter campaign with some people, i was just looking for a way to join like someone elses campaign/game but i think i can find that in #looking-for-players right?
if anyones okay to answer, is there anything else i should know ?
Is there an official world with active events?
Like a feud between kings
Every world is "active" in its own way. I'm no lore expert by any means. If you want to know more about them specifically, we have a #dnd-lore channel where you can learn more
Yep, that'd be the channel to read through. There's a bunch of stuff to know, but I'd say in the main is to recognize this is a group game, so everyone's fun is a priority, not just one person's. Social contract stuff (for example https://gnomestew.com/a-deeper-look-at-the-social-contract/) is worth keeping in mind. In short, be someone folks want to play with!
Wait does this community have a large amount of LGBT people?
#find-a-game will have instructions and advice that can help you out there, but yeah. You can browse through the posts in #looking-for-players and respond to any that interest you, or you can use the server's bot to make a post in #looking-for-dm so that DMs can reach out to you directly. The instructions for how to use the server bot to make that post are in #find-a-game
Certainly. D&D is for everyone
The community is large, so chances are you can find a group to fit your preferences. One caveat, though: finding a group is one of the harder parts of the hobby, and the more specific your criteria, the more difficult the search becomes.
yeahh of course! the only people ive played with are like groups of friends so id obviously have to accommodate randoms
That's what I was worried about
oops i forgot to reply sorry
ty for this it makes sense and might be easier to post what you want rather than trying to find it
D&D is a social game, where you play organize and play the game through verbal agreements with other people. Its not like a video game where you join a queue and get pair with random people. You get to pick who you play with. You can set whatever criteria for your search that you want. If you are doing so in this server, you just have to make sure it fits within the server's rules.
It's important to do both. Finding a game is hard, so casting as wide a net as possible will only increase your chance of finding one. You can also try searching on sites or other communities outside of this server
Hey. Further questions about the adventures (pre-made).
What do the books/packs come with? It says X amount of maps. Are these 'in' th ebook or are they printable/pullouts etc?
Or is it 'just' the book?
From the digital perspective. Is there benefit/importance to linking to the D&D-B account?
Maps are printed in the book, not separate, in my experience.
They're just like any other pages.
Can't you make a costume map?
I've seen some reels of people making a costume continent
The community has made plenty of maps for plenty of the official adventures, so you probably won't be stuck making xeroxes or anything.
I am not personally familiar with that. I haven't run many premade adventures. Though I do believe you get a digital version as well to use in D&D Beyond's Maps feature. Though that is still in beta
so.... in essence, if I purchase, I can expect just a book to arrive in the post?
The last time I ordered something like this, it came in a box and had a dice set and character sheets but it may bhave been a started pack or something
Yeah, starter packs have more stuff in them. Adventure books are by and large just the books.
What exactly are you buying the book for?
I think there are a few exceptions that are deluxe.
I think you should align a purchase with what you need
It's a whole adventure taking characters from levels X to Y.
Pre-made ...... just needs a DM
Then I think maps would be included
They are included; they're just not removable.
There's also different versions for some adventures. You can just buy Curse of Strahd or you can buy the fancy version with the book, the map, the cards etc
So yeah, deluxe versions do exist
Does anyone know that elemental damage bypasses AC? Lets say a sword had +4 fire damage, would that be added to the attack roll or just the damage roll?
+4 fire damage to an attack that lands. the spell or weapon should tell you how it hits
I'm talking about the exception. Like AC is defence, armour or perhaps evading. Also thanks.
HI everyone
Can you be more specific about what effect you are referring to? There’s no magic item in the game that specifically adds “+4 fire damage” in the way you are describing. If you can point to a specific example, we can explain if that affect the attack roll as well, or just the damage roll
I suppose it's more homebrew territory then? Calamity said it would work on the attack.
Well, if something adds “+4 fire damage” then that would mean it only applies to the damage roll and not the attack roll, but that’s just taking the effect you made up at face value. Like I said, there are no magic items that work that way, so any answer to that question isn’t super helpful to understanding how it actually works.
also damage doesn't go to "bypassing" AC
I did not say it would work on the attack. I said it would give +4 fire damage (on an attack that lands) as in, if you miss, no extra fire damage, but if your attack roll hits, then it would be +4 fire on top of the damage.
Thats more what I'm after.
that's not really a newcomers question if you are trying to homebrew an item or spell that bypasses AC.
Don't +"x" weapons like a +2 sword, magic infused get that +2 to the attack rolls and damage?
they do what they say they do - https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/5401-weapon-2
A +2 sword would add +2 to your attack roll and +2 to the damage roll, because it says it does
I am taking a glance into the free rules. And needless to say it is a bit overwhelming. What parts of these rules do I NEED to learn to actually get started and what can i just learn as i go?
The important parts are the class/species that you're actually playing and the rules about how to play the game
So if you want to play a fighter, you can just read their rules and ignore the other classes for now
ok thanks for the info
is there many campaigns that are geared towards newer players?

Is my DnD character set up correctly? https://jmp.sh/s/b7IRNtd9Mj16ZiocZknS
What level is this character?
9
Ok so in terms of correctness, a few things:
- You seem to be missing a lot of you class features, background features, racial features, non-skill proficiencies, and languages
- You seem to have not written down your proficiency bonus
- Your charisma save is wrong. It should be +1 since your charisma is 12 and you don’t have proficiency in charisma saving throws
And then on an effectiveness level, which I can go more in depth about in #character-discussion , your stats seem fairly low for level 9. I’m assuming you rolled for stats and your DM approved your array, but if they haven’t yet I’d recommend switching to Point Buy or Standard Array
Hello, I am very new to DND, and wanted to see if I could find any people willing to play. I've played a little bit of homebrew stuff about half a year ago, so it's still kind of fresh. I am decently quick to learn, but lack in the roleplay aspect.
I am open to any kind of games, homebrew, official, or any others there are that I don't know about.
If you were looking for a group using this server, head to #find-a-game !
I will do that, thank you.
planning my group's first session for this weekend, 2 players are completely new and 2 are somewhat new. Any tips for helping them understand the rule? Also any good cheat sheets for the players?
There are a few good combat cheat sheets online, though I don't know that any have been made specifically for 2024 rules yet if you're using those
Hi
So...
I'm absolutely new at *e v e r y t h i n g * dnd related, but it looks fun so idk-
if i want to write a oneshot what do i take as reference ? like are there any templates available ?
I just pull stuff out of thin air
If you can find one of the Adventure's League templates for dungeoncraft online, it's a pretty good format
I think the latest one might be on DMsGuild

hello
Hey I need help on making a scnce from my dnd campaign I don't know how to make it
I have it ok paper but I want to make it in a 3d modle with the monster and hero
So I’ve got stuff set up and I’m ready to go with D&D Beyond, I’ve even got dice!
Ive been reading a bit and I’m trying to figure out how to post my availability so I can find a game that fits while I continue to browse and look around, what do I need to do from here?
Question, is monk a good class? I'm a new player and that really looks interesting but in the media I've been watching (on yt) I don't see so many choosing to play monk
All classes are good.
Alright, thanks!
No class is ever bad, but every class has a subclass that’s bad.
-Galaxite 2024
But the bad subclasses are still good because of the class. Even trickery cleric
In the free rules, there's only one subclass for each class available. In the Players Handbook, there are three subclasses for each class.
They are listed under the class.
Oh like choosing one of the three paths in the monk class? When you get to level 3?
Yes
Thank you!
If you want to see how good/if you want to play a class I would recommend creating a character and facing it of to some Goblins or other low level monsters to see if you like the play style
Uhh how do I do that?
Go to dnd beyond and all the free tools will be available, go to create a character and go through all the stages, then you can look up some stat blocks for the Goblins
I would also recommend creating one in your head to figure out their personality and how they would act in different situations (they might not fight the goblins at first and perhaps choose diplomacy)
Stages as in levels? Character levels?
ig I'm throwing hands :(
Species, class, background

I'm learning to play DnD 5e and I use Beyond to play. I want to know if the site calculates the barbarian's rage damage automatically. Is there a toggle that you can activate for rage? I couldn't find 😭
I saw that there is a table that shows how much damage rage adds to attacks, but I never remember to add the bonus
It unfortunately doesn’t do that for you. I made a homebrew “item” that adds the bonus if equipped
As a general rule of thumb, D&D beyond does not automatically apply any effects that are temporary or one time use. So, it won’t add damage for range, it won’t roll a d4 for bless, and it won’t roll d6s for sneak attack.
If you attack in rage 99% of the time, maybe the easiest way to do this would be to add your range damage by customizing your weapons. Just Remember to subtract it if you don’t rage and attack
I found the option that does what I wanted. I was just a little hidden lmao
It would be much more practical if there was a Toogle right next to the weapon/unarmed strike, just to turn it on and off when needed. 😥
You can post something in #ddb-feedback if you’d like to recommend a change to the site, but I’m sure the devs are already aware this is something users want
ok, ty!

Hi everyone! I’m fairly new to dnd. I’ve watched the animation the legend of vox machina and a couple of episodes of the second campaign both from critical role. Last weekend I was at an event where I did a workshop on dnd. I had so much fun and I’ve been wanting to get more into it. Does anyone have any tips on where to start? I don’t really have any real life friends that are interested in dnd so for now irl dnd isn’t really an option for me. I need tips on how i find myself a group to play with online and tips on how to educate myself more on the rules of dnd etc. Any help is welcome :)

its really good!!
thank youu 🫶
how could someone incorporate a players lore better into my storyline? I have a potential idea for a campaign but feel that it's too linear and there isn't much space for player story
Sounds like a question for #dm-discussion !
Hi
.....(wiggles my way inside) Hello there, name's Retrac and I would like to try out DND (not today but another day), I've seen a few clips & heard a few experiences from YouTube & ended up getting a bit interested to check it out and possibly play it at some point.

Welcome! There's some handy links above to get you started, but if you've got any questions, ask away!
Im looking for an beginner friendly campaign
Lots of DMs love running games for beginners! The link above "Where do I join?" will help you get started on your search. When you're looking for groups look for the keywords "beginner" or "newcomer" to find games looking for players like you.
Lots of games are beginner-friendly even if they aren't specifically advertised as such, too.
So if you see one you're interested in, can't hurt to ask anyway.
Are there anyone who would be ok with text to speak for a game? I have someone at my house who I don't want learning that I have a discord so I would like to try and keep it silent so they don't hear what's going on.
Look through the games in our Looking For Game channels (see #find-a-game ) and look for Play By Post or text-based games
But I’d also recommend not going behind your guardians back particularly when it comes to online safety.
Yeah, it's just that I've already kinda dug this hole, I would like to let go of the inner stress over telling them, but me thinks they'll immediately take it away if I do tell them, so I just end up keeping quiet.
But thx for letting me know.

Welcome lonely traveler
So reading the dmg and mm trying to figure out how you’d distribute 50 xp to a party of 4 for defeating 2 kobold do they each get 50 or 12.5?
if 2 kobolds is worth 50, each player will get 12, as you round down
Sweet, less decimal math
how do I pick a class?
Are you asking for a particular platform (i.e. D&DBeyond) or how to add a class tag next to your username?
my username
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
You should see a “Channels & Roles” tab on the server sidebar
thank you
It should be at the very bottom
New to the server and new to D&D. Really excited to start playing and diving deep into this game.
Question: I gave my character a signature weapon, if I were to explain how he got it & how he can use it, would I be allowed to use it if it isn't super strong?
That's going to depend on the DM.
The odds are better if it's not magical
And best if it's an existing weapon/normal starting equipment
You can describe the weapon you start the campaign with however you like, from a thematic perspective. You cannot decide that it does anything additionally mechanically unless the DM approves it, or you have a class feature that grants it.
If it's a personal weapon important to your characters backstory, it would be interesting to ask your Dungeon Master if the weapon could start off broken or an important parts of it are lost, you can reforge, or find parts of the weapon.
So about that magic, the weapon itself isn't magical, I imagine that the character himself would put magic into the blade during battle.
My reason is in his backstory, he was sacrificed to a Sun God by the mysterious BBEG, but was revived out of pity and blessed with the power of fire, thus allowing this Aarakocra to have pheonix-like traits without being an actual pheonix.
The signature weapon is basically a simple stick taped onto the horn of a beast, which was cut up into something spiker and smaller
And it's a pair
And how would you achieve that narratively with official options? If you have to use homebrew, keep in mind that’s up to DM discretion, even more so if you’re new to the game and going around official character creation rules
If you want to invest magic into your weapon during combat I'd recommend looking into the Magic Weapon, Elemental Weapon, or Conjure Minor Elemental spells
Shillelagh, True Strike, or one of the other weapon cantrips could also work well
Thing is about this character creation, I don't know the limitations, I was just creating a character I wanted to play with.
You probably should read through the 2024 free rules first then to get an idea of what’s allowed
Thats a really admirable way of doing it imo. Dont worry about the mechanics at first, just come up with a theme and then figure out what features/spells best enable it
Hi, I am a GM on a completely different system and I got a whole bunch of newly gifted source books that Im excited to dive into.
I have been digging into video actual plays and it strikes me that to be an effective DM you need to have decent story and plot development to keep players engaged. Even for oneshots there seems to be a connection to an event, place or time in the lore of the game.
This is a bit overwhelming to me as stupid as that might sound. I play a system that is more biased to action, has opportunities for connecting sessions but generally characters and events are disconnected, and characters are fun and have some depth but nothing like backstories that I see modeled in what I am watching so far.
Is this what the average game is like though?
To be clear I am talking about official sources. I can’t begin to think about homebrew. And mostly I am asking because I admittedly lack the creativity to make these things come to life in the ways I am seeing. Theyre amazing but I can’t live up to that 😂
I'd be curious what system you're playing and what actual plays you've watched, though any non-D&D systems should be discussed in #non-dnd-topics.
It will depend heavily on the preferences of the table. In my experience, a classic D&D session involves an adventure that starts with a plot hook, and involves a series of connected rooms that stand between a party of 3-6 adventurers and their goal. That goal can be a macguffin, or it can be some open ended concept like a piece of knowledge, or someone that needs stopping.
Connecting adventures together into a longer campaign is a matter of zooming out your perspective. The individual adventures that make up a campaign are just individual rooms that connect to the next adventure(s), and stand between the party and the ultimate goal of the campaign.
Hey everyone, still learning and had a question thats probably obvious but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Bracer of flying daggers
Weapon mastery Nick
How do they interact?
Because iv essentially attacked with 2 daggers, do I get the benefit?
Or since I have used my action to do a replacement effect type scenario of pulling the daggers out I don't get the addition pseudo extra attack?
You can do that with 5e if you wanted. There are many many 3-5 session adventures on the DMs Guild and Drive Thru RPG. I'd just take a look at the reviews first before putting any money down, as many prewrittens can be hit or miss.
Thanks. Want to clarify that I removed my previous message as it contained a reference to another system and I was not sure if I violated any usage terms as a result. But I appreciate this and all the other feedback and would love to hear more.
I think knowing, if I were to advertise a DnD game, what the expectations of the experience were, that would help me decide my level of personal investment. Theres so much interesting stuff Id love to play, and I would want to ensure I met the table expectations from a DM standpoint.
When would a DM take an action as the monster during combat?
Could anyone give me a brief explanation on how the game works?
Tysm
While it's not prescriptive, it's a good example of the "vibe" of D&D
if a tortle is a monk do they make their strikes with their claws with the strength modifier or with unarmed strike with their dexterity?
monk's martial arts is composed of multiple clauses, so you can use or not use each individual clause that says you can do X
Hello My little brother and Myself are looking to learn more about TTRPGs cause we have absolutely zero knowledge of this game
TTRPGs is a genre of game, and this game specifically is Dungeons and Dragons (Fifth Edition) (commonly referred to as just, 5e)
You'll also hear people distinguish between 2014 and 2024
D&D 5e started in 2014, and is getting a rule revision in 2024.
So far we have the Player's Handbook (PHB) 2024 version out now, and the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) 2024 version is in early access for some tiers of subscription on the (official!) digital (marketplace + character sheet + compendium) platform, DNDBeyond.
On the chacter sheet, for personality traits, ideas, bonds and flaws what do u write
Whatever you like
kk
Some backgrounds will give a few suggested options.
Or you can just make up whatever you think fits your character.
Those are all purely for your own use, to help you try and flesh out your character.
You can use as much or as little of it as you like.
These things are role play prompts. They aren’t a mandatory part of the character sheet, but you can use them to help yourself develop a personality and demeanor for your character. What you actually write in these sections is entirely up to you. Though your background may come with some suggestions.
Also, what abt the features and traits section-?
Features and traits is where you write in the powers and abilities you get from your class, subclass, and race.
kk
should I make a character on dnd beyond or a paper
I find the paper easier but idk if there’s liek benefits to using DND beyond
D&D Beyond can be easier if you plan to play online. But honestly paper works fine
If it's easier for you to do it on paper I would say do it on paper.
The only time I'd see it be being "better" is if your doing it online or something
kk
Hi all, I'm a new beginner and was wondering if anyone is currently looking for others to join or people who are open to a newcomer joining?
More of a DM question -
How do spells work?
How many spells can a person use in one turn?
How does a DM decide the ability a monster uses?
Spells do what they say they do. If we’re talking about 2024 rules you’d have a spellcaster use the Magic action to cast a spell. Some spells take a bonus action or reaction to cast, which are listed in their description. Casting a spell normally requires a spell slot, and creatures can only expend one spell slot per turn (as opposed to round). A DM will decide what abilities a monster uses based on their discretion and what’s on their statblock that’s available to be used.
To get a clear understanding of how spellcasting works, I would check out this section of the 2024 Free Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells
Check #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with using this server!
Why is it that when we download the character sheet in PDF from D&D Beyond, it doesn't come in the new version?
I know I can download the new blank sheet from the website so I can edit it from scratch. But isn't there an option to change which version the PDF downloads in?
Hey, so if you lvl up either through xp or a milestone, do you immediately acces your new abilities? Or does it require a long rest?
When your XP total equals or exceeds a number in the Experience Points column, you reach the corresponding level.
(PHB 2024, Chapter 2, Creating a Character, Level Advancement)
You gain the features
Some DMs let characters gain the benefits of a new level as soon as the characters have the required XP, which gives the players the joy of using the new features and spells they gain immediately. Other DMs prefer to wait until the characters take a Long Rest or until the end of a session before letting characters level up...
(DMG 2024, Chapter 2, Running the Game, Character Advancement, Leveling Up)
Thank you
hey im pretty new to dnd and havent played in any campaigns before, is there anyone willing to teach me the basics ?

Hey, I’m trying to look for people to play the game with? I have some knowledge of the rules and what you do but never had experience in playing the game, anyone know how to help?
Oh, of course, I should mention that I’m also hoping to become a DM, but want to know what the game is like to play first!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Anyone here also looking for games in the UK? Really unsure how this works rn ahah.
Read #find-a-game!
Yeah I’ve tried that but not too sure where else to go after that, I’m not even sure I’m meant to be asking these questions in this thread.
We have #looking-for-players (that's DMs looking for players for their games), #looking-for-community (other D&D servers that may have a variety of D&D games/groups you can join), #paid-looking-for-game (pay a DM to run a game/campaign).
You can also use the bot commands noted in #find-a-game to create a post in #looking-for-dm to advertise you're looking for a game/group.
You can also check Roll20, Demiplane, other TTRPG websites and forums, and other Discord servers to try and find games.
In your opinion, which would be your best bet?
I'd recommend #looking-for-community and #looking-for-players
Also note that D&D games/campaigns are not "just drop in and start playing" things - usually it takes time to get the group organized and align schedules of everyone that's playing.
You can also check your local schools/universities as some may have gaming/D&D clubs. Same for public libraries as well.
Yeah just checked one the other day but they need a DM, and mostly cater to beginners so it was a real paradox for me ahaha.
Want to be a DM but not sure how to actually, be one, you know?
Also ask your local game store
Well... wanting to run a game is step 1! 😉 We have #dm-discussion if you want to talk shop/check in with other DMs
They were the same, believe it or not, no place seems to have a DM!
The starter set is very easy to run, I ran it for my friends when we wanted to learn dnd and it went quite well
I’ve got that somewhere, I was just worried that trying to imagine it as if I had people with me would make me look mental.
Because I come from a crowd of people that really don’t play those games because none of them actually try it, so I have to learn the stuff in order to explain it like.
Offer to run it at your local library/FLGS, and read through the introduction and the first chapter of the main adventure, and tell the players that you are also still learning, so you might make mistakes (and making mistakes is fine, everyone does), the basic rules are free online, and anytime you don't know a rule make a decision that seems the most fair and then look it up later.
The main thing is that everyone (including you!) has fun
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Thanks people, you’re really helpful.
I'm not sure where to ask this, but is there a list of commands for dyno so i can use it while explaining things?
There's some listed in the #frequently-asked-questions but we do need to update it to show some of the updated commands and ?tags new commands.

Is there anything specific that you needed help with about creating a character?
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play as well as the Dyno post above for a bunch of useful links!
Iv found the sheet to fill out but im not sure what some of the things are
Which parts? And have you read the 2024 Free Rules yet?
where is it?
Check #learn-to-play or the Dyno post above!
Is there a printable PDF version of the 2024 "Free Rules"?
I’m afraid not
Oof having a difficult time finding groups near me in person that also work with my schedule. Ugh
hey everyone
Okay I used to play dnd often but its been a while and with the new edition I need some help with making a character,
Okay im an Aasimar Druid, magician, magic initiate, and a guide
first how do I figure out my saving throw modifier and my Arcana, history, and investigation(these are just examples idk the name of what they are called) modifier
secondly I cannot figure out how many cantrips and spells I should have
sorry that is a lot
DC is 10 + Wis bonus
I think I'm missing something so theres a character I would like to try, war cleric/Fighter but I can't seem to find war cleric in D&D beyond. Is War Cleric a paid option? or am I being stupid?
Character creation from the top: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
- Chose a class
- Determine an origin
- Determine ability scores
Your ability scores and class will set your modifiers for saving throws and skill proficiencies.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
What subclasses are available on DnDBeyond and other sites is limited to the free basic rules material unless you own the books on that platform.
ah okay I see I'll have a look but couldn't find war cleric on dnd beyond
So there is a war domain cleric but it is available in the Players Handbook
You would either have to buy that book on DnDBeyond or be in a DnDbeyond campaign that has content sharing enabled and someone in that campaign has that book.
ah okay Ill look into that thanks for the info
Okay so new plan Ranger/Monk with Daggers hehe
I would suggest not multiclassing your first D&D chaarcter as it adds a layer of complexity to things (particularly when leveling up). But that said, do what's fun for you and fits the D&D game and group you're playing with.
@echo kelp you could be right I saw a video on youtube showing underated and awesome multi class. But I think I might just have a look at a single class that I like the look of.
I am also relatively new but my pals who's been helping me learn say the weapon based monk subclass is kinda bad. Would be much better doing something like rogue or just pure ranger. Ultimately it's your character tho
Are talking about Kensei? It’s actually quite good. In my experience very few subclasses are actually “bad” in a practical sense. Certainly some classes and subclasses are on-paper mechanically more impactful, but in-game their “goodness” depends on the kind of game you’re playing in and whether or not you’re having fun playing them
I’m making a character on my character sheet should I wait till I find a campaign to join? Or am I ok to at least start with some idea. Because I know I want her to be a Druid
Go ahead and play around with making a character but understand you may need to redo it or tweak it to fit a specific campaign or group
Should I roll too?
If you'd like - but many DMs and groups will prefer to see any dice rolls.
True
you can make a character to get the gist of it but it's better to find a game before you commit
Ello, I've been hearing a lot of people in my highschool talking about D&D and I decided to check it out. Looking at all of the content I've seen on youtube, it seems so complicated, but I'm willing to learn. Any tips?

Howdy! I'm pretty new to DND and just took part on the start of a campaign with friends using DND beyond (in which we somehow managed to not all die to the first monsters we came across even though we were testing boundaries of what we and our DM knew with every move which was just too fun
). Unfortunately, our DM has gotten pretty busy with life stuff, and we’re trying to keep it going.
We're all new players who are still learning the ropes so would the looking-for-dm channel be the best place to find someone willing to help newcomers, or is there another channel that might be better suited for beginner groups?
Hey I’m new to dnd but I have played bg3 so I know some stuff about the mechanics of 5e I’m just exited to fully explore this game
I'm just looking for people to play with on roll20.

Check out the pinned post above. It has a lot of great information for new players 🙂
Read the free basic rules and feel free to ask any questions you might have
How do I make sure that there is enough combat for a combat-heavy dungeon crawl without designing a TPK
You'd probably want to run multiple encounters so your party use resources. They don't even need to be combat, you could add in traps or area effects. If you get worried, you can always hint at a short rest if they need it.
Okay, so this is going to be like our first game ever. I'll spice up the loot table w/ a bunch of healing items and some nice weapons
Any tips for selecting player-level appropriate monsters? I don't want to throw a bunch of level 3's into something that will wipe anything under level 15
It's hard to give a specific answer if you're looking at challenge rating (CR), which in general isn't the best way to measure combat difficulty. How many players do you have and do you know their classes?
Definitely not a beholder
Two players, no idea on their classes 🤔 The players will be invading an ancient dungeon guarded by evil spirits to retrieve a piece of intel. I want to run a few minion-style enemies for the rooms, a miniboss (probably some sort of plant) and a big bad end-of dungeon boss guarding the final treasure. (I might knock off some abilities or drop the health depending on how they go w/ the miniboss)
It's a little hard to predict without knowing their classes but the best suggestion I could give would be the play the enemy smart. Like, have them use items or abilities to gain a small advantage that your players have to overcome.
As for enemies, large rats are always fun for dungeon crawling
Or mephits
Thanks - much appreciated
Happy to help. I hope you have fun! 😄
I prefer point buy
Imagine rolling a 8 charisma on a bard
But then you can’t go gamble
Kids, don't gamble! Looks at the 4th wall
Good job you don’t roll in order then
I'm using D&D Beyond to build my character. When I finished, I saw she had proficiency with a scimitar due to the Rogue, which I do not recall putting whatsoever. I can't find any way to delete it. What can I do? :(
Did you select that for weaon mastery?
no (only light crossbow + shortsword rapier)
What level?
1
If not weapon mastery could it be from the background you picked?
nothing there
Species then maybe?

Hi there! I'm a first time player who plays with a fairly new DM and I was wondering. How should item leveling go? We've grinded out tons of coin through various means and recently earned the ability to go on a sort of shopping spree where essentially everyone involved got massive upgrades to equipment. We're on session 13 I believe with ~100 hours played in this campaign. We're level 8 and I feel like we're just absolutely decked out on items. Could somebody teach me about the item economy and how it affects levels, progression, and player mentality? I'm pretty interested in DMing and just curious to know about stuff. Thanks!
Can you take Incubus as Race?
@lime violet there's a tiefling
Fair
@fair phoenix items don't usually "level up" you can make a weapon +1 2 or 3 but that's about it
If your dm is doing homebrew items then throw the "economy" out the window
Level 8 is absurd man. You should only have at max 5k coins at that time
Tiefling is a minor incubus
Tieflings are, in fact, not incubi. They're not fiends at all. Instead they're humanoids with some form of infernal heritage. Commonly born due to a tiefling parent(s), or by some infernal meddling somewhere in your ancestry. Much less common is direct infernal heritage, which overwhelmingly tends to produce half-fiends instead. Another important note is that Tieflings originate distinctly from humans as opposed to other species, but I'm getting too much into #dnd-lore
All playable race/species options for 5e can be found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/species
I see
First off, congrats on reaching level 8! Secondly, item economy is going to be hugely game and DM dependent, and there are enough cool magic and mundane items to make a comprehensive answer hard to do in a non-spammy series of messages. So I'll keep it as brief as I can:
- Important buff/emergency spells with costly components become more common (i.e. Hero's Feast, Revivify)
- Levels shouldn't be impacted, except for a single item interaction (various cards from the Deck of Many things) .
- Item rarity will roughly correspond to item strength. Items requiring attunement will generally be more powerful than those that don't. Ditto for items that have conditional attunement and items with permanent effects.
- Progression effects will be up to individual goals and builds. As a rough example from a "martial DPS" perspective a +1 weapon is appropriate for Tier 1-2 (levels 1-5, 6-10), a +2 for Tier 2-3 (6-10. 11-16), and a +3 for Tier 3-4 (11-16, 17-20).
- Finally, for Player Mentality the item economy helps give a goal to progress towards, more options to interact with the world, and more that can increase game engagement. On the other hand, unfair item distribution and items that feel useless can be demoralizing.
I’m looking for somebody to play with just started
heya guys

Curious how folks who have used StartPlaying, feel their experiences have gone. I’ve been looking for an in-person group for my free Mondays but it’s been failing and am likely going to be forced to relearn online play. Would you all recommend checking here and StartPlaying too? (That of which the platforms mentioned are new to me and I’m unfamiliar with StartPlaying for example)
Yep. Going too deep into the lore I see.
Hi I tried to create a specie in homebrew on dnd beyond and I activated the homebrew option in my character creation but yet I still can't find how to add an homebrew specie i'm sorry if i'm bothering anyone i'm just really new to this
Is there a fox species/race by any chance? Im new and I really wanna make a fox bard
There isn't, but you could always flavor another race as a fox depending on what sort of abilities you want / fit your idea of what you feel a fox race could do, if your DM allows it
There are shifters which have animalistic characteristics. You could stylize them as fox.
You can create a homebrew species here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew/creations/create-species
Or if you have a subscription, you can use any of the ones that have been publicly shared by other users:

okay so I have never played DnD before, what can I do to prepare before I begin to play? I see on Critical Role they have books to write notes down throughout the game.
Things to do to prepare to play D&D:
- Get familiar with the core game rules - you don't have to memorize everything but knowing the core game mechanics and how a character sheet works is useful. Free rules can be seen here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
- As a player, have an idea of a character concept and be prepared to flesh it out with your DM and play group
- Character sheet or some way to note down your character stats/features
- Physical or digital dice
- Optional: something to keep notes
i know i should probably set up a character sheet before looking for a campaign right? Even just vaguely filling it out (so me and DM can flesh it out more together to fit the campaign)
Anyone have any beginner-friendly sheets / tutorials on how to do that? lol. I look online for blank dnd character sheets and they just look very intimidating ;w;

hi
Just do what your heart desires. If you want to absolutely obliterate everyone with 4 attacks in a row you go Paladin. If you want to absolutely obliterate anyone and everyone with 7 or something attacks in a row, you go fighter. If you wanna stick to the shadows, rogue and if you want to do it all, Bard.
yeah i know all that, i just need to make a sheet
The D&DBeyond character creator helps fill it out step by step
I suggest doing it while reading through the free rules at your own pace. I agree, the official sheet can look intimidating at first but everything is there for a reason and will all make sense (eventually).
I highly suggest doing the dnd beyond or roll20 sheets
ty bothhh
and yeah its just very intimidating when its blank and idk what some of the stuff is (and dont know if i should fill it out yet lol)
Tell me whatever it is so I can guide you out
ill shoot a message when i get around to filling it!
It takes like 30 seconds to fill one
well i am busy right now lol so
30 seconds.
well i definitely dont want your help now :D
If you cannot respect other peoples time + boundaries i want nothing to do with you.
Hello?
Cool. Anyways it’s still 30 seconds (joke)

Welcome!

Otherwise local gaming stores, libraries, Facebook groups, etc are also good spots to look for games
Ok thanks
Hey guys - firstly let me apologise, I am new to DND, always had an interest but I come from a place where things like this aren’t quite popular. Was hoping someone could guide on how to kind of get started and find people to play with?

Okay then, more old fashioned way
We also have #learn-to-play which can help! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. You might use '2024 rules' or 2014 rules' for your character- they've very, very similar, so it won't matter much which one you use to practice with, but when you join a game you might want to check which rules they're using. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and species and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use these printable/ editable character sheets or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access races and creatures unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.

Jayn and Spamandtuna brought up Shifters, making a homebrew species (ill-advised for a newcomer, think of it like... trying to mod a game before knowing how it works?), and subscriptions.
However, there is also the Tabaxi species, which is potentially adaptable. There's also the Custom Lineage from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which essentially serves as the more baked-in 'custom race' which comes across as easier for a DM to allow.
…I’m just now realizing I replied to the wrong comment there. 😅
I'm literally going through it all now - thank you XD
how do i find a group
trying to figure it out - I want to play with someone who can guide me through what I need to do lol

Hi
Can someone help me make a Rogue fighter class character sheet please im new to this and have no idea what to do
Usually you start with one class. What level are you trying to build for?
Level 1
Then you would pick to be either a Fighter or a Rogue. Are you using an online character sheet generator like d&d beyond?
I was trying to but it's confusing for me
The character sheet should give you the option to help guide you through when you first go to make a character.
You will only have access to the basic rules content though, unless someone is sharing with you or you have purchased content.

Where does it start to get confusing?
Well like there's so much information just to create 1 character
Just wanted to say hello everyone. Not necessarily new to DND but definitely new to discord and online stuff.
yeah you actually have to read all the information and it does clear a lot up for you
Ya im realizing that when im actually taking the time to actually read everything so sorry for being an idiot lmao

nah dw - I was the same earlier
Is it better for a new player to start with a one shot for their 1st adventure into DnD?
there's definitely less commitment with a one shot, however, they often start at higher levels which can introduce a lot of mechanics and be more confusing for new players. Neither option is just bad, you just have to give yourself time to understand the character
beyond20 is not an officially supported extension..
@deft sigil good to know thanks just wondering where to start lol
U can go to find a game and then hit looking-for-players to start looking
just wanted to say new to this Discord server so thought i would say
Hi hi all you Dice Goblins
Hey there! Welcome to the official D&D Discord server!
I have a new question do I have to do everything in the background part of making a character or can i just put in the background and that's it?
Just the mechanical background part as that is critical to the character
Background stories are not as necessary.
The species and background description (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions) are necessary mechanical components.
Ill take a look tomorrow although I am nervous haha
Got it thanks
Hey same here mate im still looking for one so its going to take a bit before u find one
hey I'm new here, is there any campaign or content you guys would recommend for new players to ease into the whole process?
Hello all
@empty lance - Please make use of our Looking-for channels in order to find group members.. you can see how that system works here:

thank you.. my apologies
i'm new to dungeons and dragons how does it work?
Hai, so it says that (for a Druid) “you always have the speak with animals spell prepared” does this js mean I can liek always speak w/ animals or-??
It means you always have the spell ready to cast using your spell slots.
any games with people new to the game about to start?

So I can use it anytime-?
If you have the spell slots available, yes.
Have not played since 98 or 99 so like 25 yrs. Judy trying to get back into the game and was looking for a starting campaign. Do I need anything, like roll 20 for creating ncharacterz, or is there some other things I should have to move forward?
Your group will specify the platform. I'd recommend just familiarizing yourself with the rules.
Do I need to buy new books or are there other resources?
You can get a lot of mileage out of the free rules. But if you are gonna buy a book, the Player's Handbook would be where to start.
Thanks so much! Can't wait to get back
so basically how does the game work? you just make something up and play?

There certainly is a fair amount of creative liberty in playing the game, but D&D is still limited and structured by rules. I would check our the Dyno post above which has a link to the 2024 Free Rules!
thank you i appreciate the help
Hey open question, does the phrase “advantage on your next attack roll against that creature before the end of your next turn” work with a companion? Like I’m playing a drakewarden ranger, and have mastery with short bows to let me use the “vex” property, which is ^ what I just said if you don’t know. Can I use that, and then let my drake get that advantage with its attack after my turn? Also, drakewarden gets a pet drake, if you don’t know that. I’m new idk what yall know
It does not work with your drake
Argh damnnit. But good to know thanks lol
Drakewarden still is a really cool subclass, you've good taste
Ay thank you, it’s actually my first full character for a full campaign. Minute I saw “drake companion” everything else just got a bit hazy
I’ve played one shots tho not totally in the dark
Lmao same, my first character was a dragonborn. I was like "Dragon?"
Lolll great minds think alike
Dragon themed races and classes are too cool, fizban is my Homie
Tied between dragon and any type of shapeshifters for me, I mean my drakewarden is literally a shifter. But my other one shots have been a changeling and lycan blood hunter. I like what I like
Still waiting to get to circle of the moon druid, prolly my next campaign
While you were told it doesn't work, the reason is because your drake isn't you.
also almost everything is formatted in the tense of "you" being whoever is using the weapon or spell or magic item
Ah yeah makes sense, was hoping there was some mechanic where companions counted as “you” but it’s all good, there are still some fun ways to boost the drakes damage
Similarly if you ever find yourself using echo knight or interacting with one, the echo also isn't you, but the echo also isn't an independent thing either 😅 just a class feature to do things with
Oh crap new thing to research lol. I am verrry new to the game but lookin forward to understanding that reference after a few games
I'm Australian and looking for a DnD experience that accepts newbies. I have played a homebrew game via discord once and so have the gist of basics I think ... but obviously not strict rules. I'm not sure how to go about finding an online game...

Another open question lol, just about the spell “zephyr strike.” Let me know if I have this right- for a few turns you don’t provoke opportunity attacks, and then when that ends you can make add 1d8 to your damage roll? Is that how it works?
And I can’t use that and hunters mark at the same time? :/ so sortve follow up question, how do you deal damage with rangers? I’m a drakewarden
New to DND, have always been interested in trying out DND, but never knew who to play it with since no one knows it( atleast with my friends) so I just joined this

- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

At least 2014 version, you activate the spell, making you not trigger opportunity attacks for the duration, and once during the duration you can choose to give advantage to one of your attacks
And you're right, it does not work with hunter's mark, as both of them require concentration, and you can only concentrate on one spell at a time
As a ranger, most of your damage comes from just using your attacks, and your subclasses tend to have ways to increase it. In case of the drakewarden, your dragon can attack too, and it has Infused Strikes as a reaction to increase your damage 😎
Hi I haven't played DnD before
Also new have havent played dnd, I recently played baldurs gate 3 though and it got me wanting to play dnd
Have you tried Mr Rippers group finder?
Just woke up no i haven't what's that and who's that?
Theres a youtube channel called MrRipper they do reddit stories from DnD players and DM's. They have a Discord server for people looking for games ect
Ooooh him i do know who he is but i didn't know he had a discord server
@violet granite details should be in the description lol
Thanks man

no worries here to help
Hey I am new to dnd
What should I start with
I am not allowed to buy dnd
So I can only play it on discord I guess?
Can we even play online?
And I don't have any one to play with
Welcome to the server yes you are able to play online that's what this Discord is here for you should read all the rules of D&D sincere brand new and then go to join-a-game to start

we have channels here to help connect groups for online games. As a player looking for a DM you'd want to check listings in #looking-for-players (as DMs post there about their games). And if YOU want to make a post as a player to let DMs know you are available you'd use #looking-for-dm .
In order to post with the template in any of the channels you need to use the commands found in #find-a-game and type them in any other channel except the LF ones.
Hope this helps and that you find some enjoyable games!
Is there a way to view the players handbook or build a character for free? Some friends want me to join but we haven't had time to connect and I would like to get a head start

Hi, my name is T, and I've taken an interest to DnD:
I've played a couple of one-shots on work breaks with a work colleague before, to get the basics down, but due to the language barrier (I'm a working immigrant) it's really hard to get to play locally, as nobody plays in english, let alone getting accustomed to the ways of a campaign.
Are there any newbie-friendly groups or maybe new campaigns that I could join to get a move on?

If I buy a phyiscal players handbook through dnd beyond will get all the options on dnd beyond for character creation?
Also Im running lost mines of phandelver as a new dm with all pretty much new players is there any prewritten notes or anything helpful I could utilize?
you need to buy digital version to have access to it on their website
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Okay that's too bad two of us are already on the physical copy is there anyway to do online character creation or if somebody wants to use a different rule than in the corset we'll just have to do it on on pen and paper?
pen and paper that being said some class are free to play on the website
You can recreate content you have access to using the website's homebrew tools, but you can't make it public.
Okay yeah I was looking into that that seems like something I could do I started working on it however adding some of the subclasses was kind of confusing for me since there were so many options
I believe #ddb-support can help out with using the site's functions.
For communicating with your God, is that a spell or what?
Outside of the cleric's specific divine intervention feature or spells like contact other plane, it's whatever the DM says it is
Alr cool
What level do clerics get the Devine intervention feature?
10 iirc
There’s the spell Commune as well.
hi chat i never played but i watched a lot of dnd content and i would like to play , is there a noob friendly group or server i

agh its absolute balls trying to look for a group here in the philippines, ive been looking at the channel daily but its almost always in the wee hours of the morning 😔
Are you Irish?
or scottish
Filipino
oh LOL yeah i pick up on a lot of slang
Do D&D players enjoy custom made music or no
yay or nay bc I'm quite curious on everyone's opinion
Just like anyone, it depends! Some people might, and others might not.
Can I show you a demo, I want to see if it's even the right genre
but in DM's
No thank you
Yeah this server is primarily NA users so it can be tough. But keep trying!
I’m in NA and a lot of people work night shifts - so a game for them could line up for you!
Hello everybody! I've just recently purchased the "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle" starter set and I was just looking for some advice:
- Would this be fun for 3 people, i.e., 2 players and a dungeon master?
- Should I look in to AI Dungeon Masters / are they any good?
- What are some common mistakes that I should look out for?
Ai dms are a thing??
- Most modules are made for 4 players, and will require much more prep to make up for less or more.
- No, not really.
- No need to over plan.
No to what?
I've heard that you can use ChatGPT to basically be your dm
Also I have no idea what I'm on about because I literally have no experience whatsoever
Sorry, edited my post. Sent it a bit too early.
By 4 players do you mean 3 players and a dm or 4 players and a dm?
AI is not functional as a DM source. It's a sentence prediction tool, and can't make up for what a person is capable of.
1 DM, 4 players.
I'm gonna have to find 2 more people now 😢
Thank you!!

So do i Ez suggests we watch a game
hmm okay
Welcome. The bot post just above your message has lots of helpful resources that can get you started. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here
What are levels of character and the things like that they keep mentioning that in requirements 🤔
Just like a video game, your character will start at level 1, and level up as you play though the game and go on adventures
Well, technically you can start at any level, based on what the DM chooses, but for beginners, level 1 is the best place to start
So i don't change characters like forever with one character?
You typically play though an entire campaign with the same character, and then you make a new character whenever you start a new campaign. You also make a new character whenever your old one dies. Its also possible for them to just retire or be written out of the story if you choose to, but that is atypical.
Thanks
hi, ive never played this game but ive seen youtubers do simular things, what should i know and where should i go?

Spellcasting ability is the stat to use spells on right?
Yep.
How ironic, I am a group in the Philippines, but sadly, we aren't accepting any new members rn
Aight thanks
So a druid's spellcasting ability is Wisdom, wizard's is Intelligence, and so on.
Also we probably aren't in the same provice
Gotcha
do i have to play in real life or can i play online?
You can play online.
epic
?tag new online
thanks
idk anything here

Hii
Hi! Welcome everyone. Feel free to ask any questions you have here!
im so confused- i already read everything, but im better learning if someone teaches me step by step
Unfortunately, there aren't enough people to teach 1 on 1. My best advice right now would be to look at the free basic rules and watch a youtube video or two. Those will give you a good primer and then people here are always available to answer questions.
ok!
This bot post here is a great way to start
Hello
heyy first time trying to get into dnd is it common to do text only games?? i dont have a mic
hello
What you'd be looking for there is referred to as a "play by post" game.
Text based games (commonly referred to as “Play By Post” or “PBP”) are a bit less common than voice based games, but they still a fairly normal form of play. You should be able to find a game like that if you know where to look
i meanlike i just search on google for a forum??
anyway thanks i didnt know about those
PBP games aren’t typically played on public forums. They are usually run like normal games, where it’s just 1 DM and 4-5 players. Typically in a private discord or other chat method. I’ve never tried a PBP game, personally, so I’m not speaking from experience here, but you generally still have to go through the “normal” process of finding a group to play with before starting a game
What’s the average time of dnd sessions? And how often do people usually play?
It varies from table to table, but it's pretty safe to expect 2-4 hour long sessions. Maybe once a week or once every two weeks.
Hi, is there a good reason to be scared to play dnd? Because I don’t know what to do
as someone who is new as well, absolutely don’t be afraid
I’m like 99% sure most of the one-shot DM’s and even some campaign DM’s are willing to invite newer players
If anything from what I’ve heard of friends, veteran DM’s actually love inviting new players on One-shots specifically because of how fun and chaotic it is
Oke thank you
Most people will accept you with loving arms lol
Just do a little bit of research (mainly just figure out how to build a character) and from there most of the knowledge can be gained from simply playing
currently in the same boat.
I am a bit scared because I hate to ask people if I can join because it seems pushy if you know what I mean
i don't even know where to begin
neither do i to be honest
I kinda just joined on a whim and just to see what the server looks like and the type of people that are here.
well i mostly can only join uk ones because of my son, so im stuck really
I was looking for a activity for me and my friends to do since we're bored of doing the same thing over and over. which would be going to pubs
it's fun as long as you have a good dungeon master, if they are really that into the game then they will be more than happy to tell you what to do
well i cant go to the pub because im stuck with a 16 month old XD
well i would gladly play but i need to find a dm first XD
i just play with my dad and his friends lol
thats lucky
Damn. Not much happens anyways tbf. Apart from one of us getting pissed and having to go home eventually.
well dnd wouldnt take you away from drinking since if you play dnd and drink it becomes more fun apart from trying to not get hammered as hell
You do have a point.
im always a quick solver of ideas XD
lmao
i think that is why i wanna play dnd because i wanna have fun like all these people i watch online but when i do play dnd everyone dissapears after one session
My problem is trying to convince my friend's dnd may be a good time
they aren't sold on the idea
I'm just kinda dipping my toes
well show them some videos on dnd and tell them this is how dnd is fun
I don't know any good examples of yt vids
like one video i watch which always makes me laugh is gryla of the woods
ill send you some if you want
you will find it funny trust me
that is pretty funny
i told you xD
thanks
dnd can be fun even with stupid things and voices
the next step would be to learn the game but yeah, like I said previously. No idea where to begin.
find a dm i guess, thats all i can think and then just listen to the dm and go from there with whatever you can think of
I am a pretty creative person. But it's hard to be creative if you don't the rules or loopholes
usually no rules unless the dm says so
wait how does the game work then?
you roleplay the game as your character
or if you are using a site for the game
you move your character plaque and say what you are doing
You seem already more knowledgeable then me. Then again i joined on a whim
i only joined because i wanna play and i miss the freedom that i had when i played but i do know somethings since it sticks with me
like i use dndbeyond for my characters sheets

I don't even know what that is, I know like maybe the bare minimum, maybe less
I know there are different verisons of the game
5e is the newest version of dnd but dnd beyond is a site where you have dnd books and character sheets
