You may want to discuss that feat with your DM before taking it, though.
That was playtest content that never ended up getting published, so it’s not an official part of the game.
Oh ok thanks for the tip
Ah I see thanks
Hi everyone, played a couple of in person session so far which I have really enjoyed. I hoping to play some more but now where near me that have in person tables and want to try and get into DMing as well.
Hi, i have a question, i want to join a group but I’m new and almost all people are in America so because of timezones I can’t play with them, is there a way were you can search on pesific time zones??
Head to #find-a-game for that, but when it comes for searching for specific time zone, I'm not sure discord can help you. Perhaps you could try Startplaying, Roll20's LFG or Reddit?
Thanks!
I also recommend looking at availability over the time zone itself
Some people may be running at unusual times for their time zone that still work for you
I've got a game right now that's late evening for me and early morning for the DM
Happy that you enjoyed playing!
If you need any help to start DMing, go to #dm-discussion for some advice!
Will do!
hey, i haven’t played in a long time and i want to dm a one shot for a group of friends who haven’t played before if anyone has any recommendations on adventures and resources to help
Hello i am new to dnd and really want to try playing. Is there any groups that are willing to teach someone?

Hello! im trying to establish a campaign for other first time players, as a first time DM myself, and im having trouble creating the characters, could someone join me in a vc and help me out?
The server does not have a voice channel
thats fine, a dm would work, no?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
thx

Hey I am fully new and haven’t even played once cuz I am not sure about some stuff and I could need some help so my first question is if it is a need to have a pc to play with a group online? Hope my question is not. Stupid 😅
All you need to play D&D is:
- A group to play with
- At least the free basic rules for D&D
- A way to roll dice (digital or physical)
- Character sheets (a way to track your character stats for the game)
- A way to communicate with the group you're playing with

Ty for u help😅 I felt so ashamed to ask tbh
Feel free to ask any other specific questions as you run across them
I tried learning it through youtube but I didn’t found that much
dont be! thats how we all learn and get better. I am super new also but on StartPlaying there are games that are text based to fit any schedule (or device)
It didn’t showed me the Chanel 😅
Like if u ping it I can see it
Yeah Discord likes to change things and hide stuff - we have #channel-guide to help folks find things around here!
But if I search for it I can’t find it whiteout using the search bar
Don’t shoes up too on the normal one but I rlly appreciate ur help u are helping me a lot rn
So but to be clear and I didn’t missunderstood something I can also use just a phone? I want to be like rlly rlly shure 😅
I mean different groups may have different requirements for their game but there is nothing preventing folks from playing D&D using their phone
DnDBeyond even has a mobile app
Already downloaded it
I just wanted to be shure 😂😅
With that you can access the free basic rules (even offline if you pre-download it in the app to your device) and can run DnDBeyond character sheets with dice rolling from it as well.
Okey I rlly rlly rlly appreciate ur help I hope I didn’t botherd u or anything
Oh no you're fine! This channel exists to help new-to-D&D folks get started with this great game!
I got a question if anyone is around
its one spell per round even with action surge correct?
Under the current 2014 D&D rules, action surge could allow one to cast two leveled spells in the same turn due to the way the feature is written.
Under the 2024 updates this is not possible as you may only cast 1 leveled spell using a spell slot in your turn.
oh okay so we will see the 3rd/17th if that still holds, good to know. Bard/Fighter so wanted so see how that works
sorry i type slow
No worries - for more info about the 2024 updates, check out https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1268584072863682611

on reading anyway lol
by your handle I know you can appreciate my skeletal bard that is trying to end himself, DM let me have advantage on death saving rolls because the gods aren't done with me

Good to know lol
Sorry. I tagged the wrong person on that one. 😅
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here, but there’s some broader advice in #learn-to-play message if you want some other options.
What kind of character are you making?
I have never played DnD a day in my life but would love to learn how do I start 😅
Hi! and welcome. Still new myself but i started playing through StartPlaying. If you are not ready to start playing just yet there are a lot of resources on DnDBeyond. Also an exciting time to be getting into it as a new handbook is being released soon so even seasoned players will be learning new rules
hey, am new and trying to make a character but dont understand all the lingo n stuff (even after searching), would love some help if anyones free
what are up held up on my friend
Welcome! Is there a particular term you’re curious about?
i mean mostly just like a lot of terms
im trying to do the character builder thing
and on the preferences tab theres a lot of stuff ive yet to understand like homebrew and legacy
and what it all means
should i leave it untouched?
This covers some of the more common ones:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1026-common-terms-new-dungeons-dragons-players-should
where are you creating the character? Beyond will only give the options of races through books you have purchaced or are free, I wouldn't worry too much on those setting yet
yeah on beyond
I’d just leave that whole first page at the default settings until/unless your DM says otherwise.
alright
agreed
i jusy left all that stuff on default.
woah thats a lot of languages
that way you are on the default, homebrew means it gives you the option to add your own things, these would need to be talked with the DM before a game but if you stick with the selections it will let you pick you will have a playable character for most games
- Homebrew refers most commonly to user-made rules. Typically the DM decides whether any specific homebrew is allowed.
- Legacy refers to rules that used to be official, but I’ve been replaced by more recent updates.
ah ok
thanks for that on the Legacy. I knew the homebrew
whats a good language to take as my extra?
i dont even know what 90 percent of the stuff is
There’s no right or wrong choice there.
Picking a language that’s common in your game’s setting can be a good way to make sure you get use from it.
But making an unexpected choice can sometimes come in clutch.
i usually take an enemy language. at lvl 1 its usually goblin. lol
Either way, it’s a good discussion to have with your DM.
If you find out your campaign is taking place mostly in the underark, then taking under under common is a no-brainer.
does a spear and shield count as 2 weapons?
i will assume that i should take dueling
It counts as one weapon and a shield.
from what i can see so far
But yes, the Dueling fighting style is a good choice for that combo.
cant send the screenshot but wasnt sure if "only one weapon and no other weapons" meant a spear and shield or only a spear (for the sake of example)
You can use a shield.
thanks
I'm not sure to be completely honest, if you are interested in all the classes and races check out Crap Guild to DnD on youtube
its a funny way to explain it and took a lot of the pressure off, for me anyway
wiill do

I wanted “friends” and “chromatic orb” but couldn’t find it while building. Do I have to purchase the handbook in order to create a character with the certain spells I want?
Yes and no
if the Dm has the book they will share it with you and then you can make whatever they have
I have had two experiences so I am still new myself but one DM let me come with my character and the other wants to wait until the first session to character build
with all the other players
Oh I like the sound of making the party together to work of each others flaws but also is exciting to start a party without knowing who you’re playing with too
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Source: Dyno: #ddb-support message
had DM/GM do grp builds before. not always bad. specialy if the players are new. that way he/she has them together and is there to guide new players.
I got my first two games through StartPlaying, both DMs were super helpful and walked me through stuff
Where should I go to look for a DM or a game to play for my first time?
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Show that you took the time to read the posting by mentioning aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
- Tip: Show that DM fun isn't an afterthought by asking what makes the game fun for them.
- Check out #looking-for-community to find community-style games like West Marches, one-shots, and more
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
if you want to get out and meet people then your local game shop is a good place to start.
there are few options to find games on here as well, if you like the online idea StartPlaying is a good way if you don't mind paying the price of like a movie ticket per game
im still trying out this digital culture gaming.
I like it so far, but my only other experience was with people who had never played and it was BAD lol
in person I mean
D&D has a large community with many different ways to play.
So it's important to take the time to find a group that is most compatible with you.
No sense in joining a group if it's just going to fall apart shortly after or cause a bad experience.
It's why we have the saying, "No D&D is better than bad D&D"
Just searched up local game shops and they look like a nice way to start in person but now that you say that do you think it’s better in person or online for first game and should I play with only seasoned players or is the DM be the guid on how to
I would look for either in person or online that are beginner games, they will usually say something. Good DMs will walk you through everything and even seasoned players will need reminding of rules and such from the DM. No one is perfect
i started playing with people when i was in school. then to local game stores. then on a mil base or navy ship. so all my stuff was in person.
I am the only new person in my party, I went bard as if I mess up I can just blame it on my annoying ass character lol
lol
Neither is really better.
You can find learn to play games in person and online.
To help avoid bad experiences, it is important to communicate expectations and boundaries beforehand.
When forming a group, I ask people if they are:
- Willing to go over Lines and Veils
- Willing to go over Safety Tools
- Are lgbtqia friendly
- Are disability friendly
- Willing to take to time to see if our campaign preferences are compatible.
If someone answers no to any of these things, then I know they are likely not the someone I will enjoy playing dnd with.
What are lines and veils?
This is going to be a lot of reading
Hey everyone! I was wondering how to get started learning about dnd. It seems a little overwhelming with all the information and would love for someone advice on where to start!
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
What about safety tools?
Also how do I get involved with a campaign lmao
thats like a green yellow red system of what your triggers might be
Trigger to certain scenarios the DM might make or a party member
like for example I have some PTSD, there might be somethings I might not want to discuss so before hand I can let the DM know what lines I am willing to cross so to speak
That post is more of a one stop shop to for everything someone might need.
It's not required reading, with the exception of the basic rules, it's merely a resource for people to use should they want it.
Start playing after joining a game, How is it played online? Is it Discord Call with everyone on
Depends on the group
yep, and then maps are on a few different sites, Alchemy is one
Oooh that was a good example thanks
This article covers some of the more popular tools for playing online:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Certain spells have a distance to them. How is it measured if you can reach a target or not?
the squares are 5ft on a map
If a target is within that distance (and not behind full cover), then they can generally be targeted by the spell.
is there any way i can get like a glimps of what dnd would look like? i dont know if im ready to throw myself in because ive never played and i may not like playing at all, and i dont want to go through a lot of beginning things, and get a group and then get tired of it and leave yk? like i just want a little look if that makes sense/
There’s an interactive adventure here that makes for a good intro:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
watch an episode of Critical Role, they are voice actors and have been friends for years so your game might not click the same but fun way to watch and learn
And there’s lots of games on YouTube or Twitch that you can watch for free.
Safety tools are a thing to help make sure comfortable and having a good time during play.
For some tables this can take the form of cards people can point at when they can't express an issue into words.
Okay but when it’s a random encounter how’s it determined how far away the monster/person appeared is it up to the DM
An encounter is basically a scene in your story, typically one that presents some kind of challenge.
so the DM will tell you
It might be combat, it might be a social challenge, or something else.
if there is no map, they will be very detailed and you can always ask
So a random encounter is one that’s determined randomly.
even about terrain or your surroundings
Usually by rolling to choose a random item from a list of possible encounters.
Check out the Join the Party Podcast. It is an edited recording designed to teach newcomers the basics of dnd: https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
You can also start with just playing adventures that you complete in a single session called One-shots.
I have 0 knowledge of D&D, so anything helps
aretificers arent phb right?
Nope.
is there a list of the lines/veils and safety tools like a checklist
like some kind of checklist i can send my players
So how do I play an artificer in 2024
Start with the 3 minute overview I linked.
Then take a listen to the Podcast I linked to get an idea how the game is played.
The good news is that no is expected to memorize all the rules, not even the DM, and there are free resources out there to help people play.
You can use the artificer from Tasha's as it is still 5e.
Bob the world builder made one let me see if I can find the video where he provides a pdf and goes over it.
really?
Yes
Here is Bob the world builder's video where he goes over his checklist: https://youtu.be/KYzFaYjglWQ?si=YL4aenYRBI_PmK8a
The checklist itself can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/39281630
Ginny Di also made a video about here: https://youtu.be/Sm_TS9pge7o
And Lauren Bryant's Safety Toolkit can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/114jRmhzBpdqkAlhmveis0nmW73qkAZCj
Key thing to note is that everyone's line and veils are different. So feel free to adjust things to best suit your group's needs.
I use alchemy rpg because people's lines and veils are done at the account level and are anonymously added to games safetly establish boundaries.

ahoy yall ! my brother and i have been talking about dnd for years and we're finally getting a campaign together which im set to be the DM for :)) looking to do storm kings thunder for our first campaign, do yall think thats a good starter? i want to look for something epic because all my players have never properly played dnd before and i want to get them hooked
I think it’s a fun adventure! It’s an early 5e one so in my opinion it lacks some refinement of other stellar adventures like Waterdeep: Dragon Heist or Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. However, it doesn’t take too much work make it an incredibly epic journey
storm kings might be a little complicated for beginners because of how dense it is but in terms of longer ‘1-10’ campaigns it seems like its alot of fun
If you wanted general DM tips on how to make a campaign better you should check out #dm-discussion , but if you wanted to discuss stuff in the adventure specifically you could check the SKT channel here #1029833015423143957
i would recommend playing a level 1-5 campaign if ur brand new to get a feel for the game before you bust out the big bucks for the core books etc. but ultimately its up to you
starting with Lost mines of phandelver (which is now part of phandelver and below) was very beneficial to me as a dm. gave me a really good understanding of how to run games at a basic level while still having alot of fun
do people in general prefer videos off when doing online sessions?
I think videos off is the norm
I highly encourage videos on in my games (if possible and comfortable and safe ofc). I think body language is really important for communication. ✌🏼
I’m very new to dnd can anyone give out things I need to know starting
I've encountered a lot more voice only campaigns.

Thank you very much
helllo
for spells that says "xgp" worth of materials, its not asking for money right? but can it be substituted with money? and im guessing usually u dont have to worry about any materials or xgp worth of materials since ur component pouch takes care of it? and is the component pouch a magical item? how does it have all the materials for spell casting? and if i cast a spell with M component, do i need to buy the material to refill my pouch or does it have a limit on materials? and does the pouch magically refill in a long rest?
and whats the limit of component pouch in terms of how much it will cover, like 5gp, 50gp, or 500gp?
yo anyone got a game they can start right away ? im new so i want to experience it but everygame cost money and i want to try first before paying?
Sup
Have you looked through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community?
Notice that none of the D&D games posted there cost any money.
If you want a paid game you can look through #paid-looking-for-game... but otherwsie there's plenty of non-paid D&D games too.
If a spell says it requires a material component and that component is costly or consumed, you must present that specific component or you cannot cast it.
You can't just use money to substitute the requirement for a specific costly component.
Material components of spells are only consumed if they say they are, like Revivify's "diamond dust worth at least 300gp, which the spell consumes".
If it doesn't say it's consumed, like how Identify doesn't say so with the pearl worth 100gp, you can keep it and reuse it over and over forever, no issues.
Having a component pouch assumes you have everything that isn't consumed or costly. Think of it like "behind the scenes", not something you have to specifically do as a player. So the fleece you use for a minor illusion, you keep and reuse it over and over, and you're automatically assumed to have it as part of a component pouch since minor illusion doesn't say the fleece has to cost X gp nor that it consumes it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/spellcasting#MaterialM
A component pouch is assumed to contain any material spell component that doesn't have a listed gold cost in the spell description. Similarly, a spell focus is assumed to substitute such components.
When a spell lists a material component with a cost, you must provide that component which often involves purchasing or otherwise acquiring it. For example, you must provide a diamond worth 300 gp to cast Revivify. You cannot substitute the equivalent value in gold.
A spell will specify if a component is consumed. Some are onetime purchases (i.e. Clairvoyance). Spells that consume their component (i.e. Revivify) will require you to reacquire the material to cast the spell again.
As an additional short/concise explanation
You only ever need 1 pearl worth 100gp to cast identify as many times as you could ever need throughout your adventuring career.
You need 300gp worth of diamond dust for every time you want to cast Revivify. So if you got 900gp worth of diamond dust, you have enough to cast it 3 times.
You need to explicitly have gone and bought these components so you have them to cast the spell with.
The fleece of a minor illusion is assumed to be a part of your component pouch, but could also be replaced with a focus as appropriate for your spellcasting feature. Free, "handwaved", no minutae.
What a westermarch?
A westmarch D&D game is one where there is no set DM or group of players - instead a group of players self-organizes and finds an available DM. Often westmarch games play in a shared living world setting where what one group of players does may impact the world for other groups of players.
Hi!im new here, can anyone explain me some basic rules and mechanics as a player here?
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Ty for the advice!!

If you want to find a game in this server check #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). But if you're under 18, try seeing if your school has a D&D club, or if your local library hosts games
Hey guys. I'm very confused. What is theatre of the mind?
It references playing DnD without any sort of visual Support
Just your imagination
Is a lot more challenging for a DM because he has to describe the state of the battlefield every turn: Say who is still standing, how far are they and etcetera
I see. Thank you!
Where should I go to get help with my character creation sheet?
Guides on YouTube or experienced players/dms
In those instances, DMs tend to generalize locations and focus on using fewer but more difficult to defeat enemies as opposed to using more but weaker enemies to make combat challenging.

So, chthonic tieflings… what’s up with them?
Pretty sure they're just tieflings decended from a different source. Default tieflings are linked to Asmodeus lorewise
What exactly were you looking to know about them?
Hello
Mainly lore and general discussion, I’ve found either conflicting info or none at all so far
Also, in ur opinion what would be some good thematic classes for them?
Hello everyone
I don't know enough about those tieflings for thematics. I'm also of the opinion that any race works with any class
Warlock is a classic though.
A lot of Tiefling Bards, because, reasons

Can someone help me fill the character sheet?
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
How are you filling out the character sheet? By hand, a character builder like dnd beyond/roll20 , or are you using some other method?
I tried the DnD beyond but im trying out a character sheet from Players Handbook
Someone sent a video, it seems pretty clear
I
You can start here: #dnd-newcomers message
omg im so proud of myself i just dm'ed for the first time for my friends today and i think i did well
- This video goes over the step by step process of using D&D Beyond's character builder. The process is mostly the same for any chosen class: https://youtu.be/CeIJKkpDvBY?si=BDz0bONpiyHUzwsi

they seemed to enjoy it
Happy for that!
i need to prepare for next week
Thank you
I maded 3 characters do I need only 1 or can I use some of them sometimes ( idk which character to use ) 😂😂😂
Generally speaking, you’d have just one character for each campaign.
Its good to have a back up, you won't use all the characters but if one happens to die the DM might want to bring you back in the game as another one
Do you need to make a character sheet I don't have a DM yet
Hey so, Im new. I just wanted to pop in and have somebody explain to me how I start playing in a DND campaign. I saw Adventures of smt smt on YouTube and I laughed myself to sleep. Im just looking to do something fun that can become a hobby, hopefully it isn’t too much
(I already have a character idea in mind I just don’t know what and where to start)
always fun to make sheets, why not
So do I have to make it like only DND species
also depends on the setting, example I am currently on a pirate ship, I get NPS to control for the crew. You could "give" one of your characters to the DM so to speak
Good point
You don't need to have a character ready beforehand.
If fact it's generally recommended to you use the campaign's premise, setting, tone , and guidelines as the basis for creating your character.
Though it will make things easier if you take the time to learn how to build a character beforehand.
no, that would fall into Homebrew, back to my pirate adventure I am a skeletal Bard, the race exsists but I had to make it up as playable character, homebrew is up to the DM if they allow it in the game
Ok
mine goes even further, he doesn't want to be a skeleton so kinda wants to end his life, but the gods have other ideas so he has advantage on death saving throws

I was thinking to make a undead wizard that is cursed
this is far from tyhe norm but I was able to explain in a way that the DM liked and fit in her rule
I have friends that do worst
Ok
My friends play DND so I want to try and play to see how it is
one one way I plan on using the skelton again but maybe not being undead would be that I bought a crappy invisibility potion, I could even give myself a hinderance and say I can't go invisible because of this. Ultimatley its up to the DM but I have found if you can find a good rerason for it the DMs are down\
Overall there are 3 general things to consider when making a character for any tabletop game like D&D.

Ohhh niceeeee
Ok so what do I use to make the character sheet
Thank you
How can I make a sheet ?
head over to dndbeyond.com you can make a sheet there
I'ma open it up on my pc
I HIGHLY recommend the Crap Guild to DnD on youtube, really funny way to explain some of this stuff and took the pressure off
My post here lists a few options: #dnd-newcomers message
You can use a character builder the dnd beyond, make it manually (Either pencil & paper or fillable pdf), or make in a virtual tabletop's character maker.
Thanks
Check out the posts here: #dnd-newcomers message
yeah and from what I have read or seen they bring the new character in on whatever level the other one died at, that way you are not lvl 1 around a bunch of 10s
they will write you in, a mystirous stranger at the tavern, you come in and save the group, they find you locked up somewhere and so on
I was walking the bottm of the ocean and saw their ship battle above and swam up
I joined my group on their 6th session so there a lot of options on starting a game
Do I need to draw my characters? (I’m not good at drawing
)
No.
nope, I used AI but do not post that here, they got rules
Ok ok 👍
It's an option.
Most people who can't draw themselves will use visual character creators like heroforge or even Baldurs Gate 3's character creator.
Some will even commission artists for art of their characters.
oh man what a great suggestion on heroforge, I totally forgot about that site and I have like 3 figureds saved
I just finished my character sheet
You can share it on #character-discussion if you'd like feedback.
If using dndbeyond, double check that it is set to public so others can view it. Otherwise you can share a screen shot through an imgur link.
if you have trouble finding where to make it public let me know, I got stuck there.
its easy to turn the settling on before you make a character but a bit burried if you already have
No I'm just getting my spells and
Then I'll post it at least I'll try
cool, its in the character creation under the home tab, all the way at the bottom
yh this is the acount on my pc but i cant find it
I am going to send you some pics through direct
Hello there
hello
where does one find the character builder for dnd? I have the refrence sheet on me
can someone help me start learning and playing the game?
D&D Beyond website.
thx
I’m kinda new to dnd but have played a bit
ik a bit from my freinds
i haven’t played at all
Yeah me too, I played a little practice campaign with some friends
thats how most of us started, there are a lot of ways to start playing on here, I went the paid route on StartPlaying. Only one session so far but signed up for another and session 2 is Monday. I say take the plunge, they even offer one shot adventures to learn
how the heck do i do that
and plus i don’t know if anyone would accept me cuz i don’t have a character
StartPlaying.com is the website, and a lot of the DMs will have premade characters to take the pressure off
is it free?
or straight begginer games so its all new players, that site is paid BUT the #find-a-game on here has a bunch of free resources
if you want to watch some games to learn I suggest Critical Role on youtube, they are actors so games might not be that "made for tv" in real life but it is a fun way to learn, I think
Dimension 20 is another one
What is Stealth Dissadvantage for heavy armors? What does it do exactly?
so when you do a stealth check you will roll two dice, the one that is lower you have to go with
advantage works the opposite way
Damn
Thanks 👍
I'm still new but I am sure there are mechanics to exploit the system and get around that. Example there is a spell that is Call Vanish without a Trace that gives a +10 to stealth
Idk I honestly don't really care about stealth for my character, just was curious and no one online said it exactly
totally, some of this stuff is so buried its hard to find. I had to be walked through a bunch lmao
I spent all day trying to figure it all out, got confused with a very important thing and didn't know what to do
Someone sent a 10 minute video, and in 30 mins I almost have it
(I mean a character sheet)
relatable!
after about 15 yrs or so and i still dont have it all. lol i quit for a few yrs and now i feel like a rookie again. lol
some stuff is 100% trial by error, some you pick up from other people
True
and a new rule book comes out in two weeks so its gonna be fresh for seasoned players too in a way
Two weeks????
Wow
yeah, its more of a revamp. I wouldn't stress
all i can say is read class and race. pick a couple that you like and get those down. lol even getting back in the game i still choose to play Dwarves and Halflings. lol
if you need a laugh on race and class check out Crap Guild to DnD on youtube, the fighter had me rolling
and made me subclass fighter lol
yeah already preorder.
I'm thinking about choosing a (imo) cooler or a more practical race
same I hear we get it the 3rd digital if we did?
Most people say I should choose the cooler one for me but idk
its your character, do what feels right!!
one shot questers has had me laughing for a bit. lol
True
so far I have learned people are people, some like Tenan will be helpful and welcoming, others not so much
Cooler is all in the eye of the beholder "so to speak. lol
yeah I agree, its up to you. I accidently made a One Piece character cause I don't watch that show, did I get snicker? sure but gonna lean into it now lol, you think that deserves a snicker I am a Bard my friend! Sing you a merry little tune
point is have fun, you wanna be a space orc with a laser hand, do it! and hope to run into you out there
That's so cool omg
To be totally honest
I'm thinking of a strong tank dude
The most optimal race, half orc
But Dragonborns look so cool
It all depends on the DM, if you can explain it its their job to make it fit in the rules if that makes sense. You have a laser hand? great, how'd you get? what are you hoping it does? it can't cut through everything but i'll give it this boost or default and so on
example, I am laying a skeletal bard, cursed with life and klinda wants to end it all
The story of a brute half orc suddenly finding a weird weapon that shoots unlimited lasers and goes wild with it is pretty funny lol
the DM gave me advantage on death saving trows as the gods are not done with me
That's so cool too omg
right but because I am a skeleton my strength is low, trade offs. So the DM might say you have unlimited ammo but it overheats or something
Still, that's so cool
thanks!
Like, a laser goes through anything
If you shoot at a vital place, instant kill right?
Nope
eeeeh prob not, that's more of a DM question. My point was more you can describe or request anything, its up to them to decide if it fit in the parameters. One shot would be a little too OP. BUT they could say hey its a lazer so its extra "fire" damage or something
but thats getting way into Homebrew
Oh ok
Well yeah, i'll do what sounds cooler and tell the DM 👍
A DM prob won’t give you a laser weapon as most DnD is fantasy medieval renaissance
are you talking abot a light saber
True
Laser shooter, but yeah too OP
it was an extreme example, I was just saying don't let players tell you whats cool. Be whatever you want, just know the DM might have rules around what you request
yh
Yea
So this maybe a newbie question.. but with all the new rule books being announced.. how will they relate to the already released campaign and story books? Will the campaigns be compatible with the new 2024 rule books or will they also be rewritten to match the new rules
so, originally DnD Beyond was just going to make the change to all Character sheets
they pulled this back last week
it will be up to the player and DM what set they play with so I would suspect your preexisting will stay the same and new games will say beforehand what rules they are playing
I want to get into DnD.. so far been playing other stuff like Cthulhu or WH etc.. just wondering if I get the new rule books should I also at some point buy for example other campaign books for 5e (like Vecna or Strahd)
I just asked a DM what his "must have list" was
he told me nothing beyond the player handbook, DMs will share with you all the content they have so you don't have to purchase all the books. Now myself I still wanna mess around in character creation without having to wait so I do have a few books, I would research what race or class you might want to play as and get that book. There is also the homebrew section and that basically has everything and peoples own public creations
Im done with sheets what should I do now ?
premade adventures are up to you. when i first started my friends and i bought 3-4 modules "premade" adventures. after that one of the guys took over as DM and spent like a week creating one and we played that next week end.
But the already premade adventures will be compatible with both 2014 and 2024 rules correct?
to be honest. i dont know for sure.
Or there has to be some sort for conversion to new rules 🙂
Yes they should be
Cheers!
do you guys like to have visual concepts of your characters?
personally i do, you can't post A.I here but lots of text to art sites, HeroForge is a mini site and people use that
What is the attack bonus?
Proficiency bonus as determined by level plus an ability score bonus which depends on the type of attack. Most melee weapons use Strength, ranged weapons or weapons with the finesse property can use Dexterity, and spells vary depending on your class. Add it to the d20 roll and hope you equal or beat the target's Armour Class (AC).
Can use dexterity, or only use dexterity?
For a finesse weapon, it's optional.
On what weapons do I plus strength and dexterity?
Can I just + strength on all?
Oh, and throwing weapons use Strength, that's the other one.
You'll only ever add your proficiency bonus and one ability score modifier to any attack.
Okay so
Level one, +2 proficiency bonus
And I have 16 strength, so +3
Do I get a +5 on an attack bonus of a greataxe?
That's right.
And on a shortsword the same right?
It has finesse but I just, choose to use strength
Right?
Yes, that is an option.
A ranged weapon uses Dexterity only.
I do wish I have assess to the other Races without having to buy the other books.
that is true, I have found that annoying. BUT if you get started with a DM they can share all of their books and content when you are creating a character. You just have to be signed up for a campian with them
what is the best youtube site for beginners?
Oh. Ok.
I just asked a DM what his "must have list" was and he said nothing beyond the handbook as a DM should share their stuff. That said I am impatient so I got a couple books by researching what character I thought i would build and then only getting that book. Some books have a bunch of races and classes and some don't but they should tell you in the drop down
I just finished my character sheet, can I send it to someone to make sure it's ok?
yeah absolutely, either DM it too me or if you are looking for more of a group you should post it in the #character-discussion
I can just, post it?
maybe say something like looking for feedback
to go back to this Monsters of the Multiverse unlocked a bunch of stuff
ok
Ok, I'm listening
I just direct messaged you
In my experience it’s very common to have DMs own most of the content provided for the campaign. Usually even if a DM doesn’t own a certain piece of content they’ll allow some or all of the options if someone else has access. That being said if you wanted to purchase a book for more options (or to ease DM burden) feel free to!
My typical group for example each own different books and share the contents with each other
same, there hasn't been much I haven't been able to get through sharing. I totally get the frustration of bored character creation and not being able to unlock everything though lol
I highly recommend for new players to check out their local library, as they often have dnd sourcebooks
support the library always!!!!
mine even hosts games
my best friend is a librarian so she would hit me if I didn't mention that many libraries even have free 3d printing theses days.... just saying
Real stuff bro???
totally! you would be surprised at the tech you find there these days
For totem warrior barbs, when you get to choose which animal 6th and 14th level, do you still keep your previous buffs from your last selection?
You still keep what you got at 3rd level (or 6th), if that was the question
But you don't get to add multiple affects at each level. It's one per choice
What do you mean by add multiple effects?
I think he means you can only select one of the many listed option at 6th, then 14th levels
Yes, you only get 1 ability at each level, depending on which animal you pick
You do not need to choose the same animal at the later levels.
Yeah
I couldn't tell if the original question was asking if you could pick bear at 3rd but then pick wolf at 6 and also get the bear 6th level ability. Or if it was just asking if you could pick different animals
No
I just meant if the abilitys were unique
To the level
The wording of the subclass confused me a bit

It’s all still D&D 5th edition.
How it’s handled will be similar to how some core classes and subclasses were revamped in recent books.
For example there are already two versions of beast master subclass. Players have the option using either the 2014 phb version or the version from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
hey, just a quick question, would playing a game character be a good way to get into dnd if i can't think of a good character to make
premade characters are i good place to start if you have ni idea what you want to do.
Results are going to vary wildly as dnd has its own set of rules and mechanics. So abilities won’t be a one to one translation.
one my first D&D games the DM put all the Pre mades face down so we could randomly choose a sheet of paper. it was kinda fun geting to know the race and class that we had chosen.
well theres this one game character i wish to play that i think actually fits really well into dnd
A common pitfall that newcomers fall into is building a character concept before learning the rules and mechanics.
The better approach is to learn how D&D's character builder works and use the options available to you to build a fun and interesting character.
and always include you DM/GM. lol
is this because they may be a fan of the game your characters from and can give you pointers?
Overall there are 3 general things to consider when making a character for any tabletop game like D&D.
The character should be:
- Fun for you to play.
- Fun for your fellow players to play alongside with.
- Fun for your Game Master to run a game for.
what if i don't have a gm/dm yet and just wanna craft a character beforehand
Are you referring to the text based tutorial game "before the storm".
Then for now learn about the character building process such as picking your race, class, how to set your ability scores, and so on.
You can also keep character concepts loose enough that you can make changes if needed.
Congrats
Hopefully you enjoyed playing that.
Did playing that help you understand a few D&D concepts?
Hey zero, do you find that groups keep game talk to in campaign? I joined a group and the chats been quiet, wondering if I am just a littlew excited lol
It varies from group to group.
D&D has a large community with many different ways to play.
So it's important to take the time to find a group that is most compatible with you.
For example, if you like leaning into the drama of roleplay find people who love that as well.
If you lean more the strategy and tactics side of D&D, take the time to find people who love that.
yeah I think my group is on the more strategy side as I Bard my way through my first campaign lol
People can and do enjoy both, specifics are important to establish.
yeah I joined through StartPlaying and its session 6 so I stumbled in a few different ways, but the DM has been super nice and I do have a tendency to overthink
Overall the more specific your are and communicate what aspects of dnd you gravitate towards, the better.
For new people jumping into the hobby, I highly recommend starting out by playing different types of single sessions adventures.
That way, you can quickly figure what you love, what like, what you're meh with, and what you genuinely don't have fun with.
Hey all new to the game long time watcher on Twitch ive just loaded dnd beyond and made a charecter I'm looking for anyone else interested in playing looking for 18+ easy going group I'm in my 30s and just really want to get in and enjoy it recently I've watched multi classing which I find very interesting and would love to get into that either off the start or gradually however the group wants it.
In the mean time I'll go look at the looking for players page and see what's around.
Thank you all who took the time to read this post.

I'll be looking for online gaming.
Thank you for the info!!!!
Happy to help.
I will say that I am biased and tend to recommend D&D Adventurers League the most.
Mostly because it allows me to play my character in person at my local shop and then play them in another adventure at a online discord server.
Though I should note that it does come with its own drawbacks.
I'd love in person the only issue is between my work schedule and my wife's it's a bit hard cause I've 2 kids and can't afford a sitter lol
Hey guys, so I’ve been attempting to try playing for a while, and it never comes to fruition. I was wondering if anyone is playing g tonight and is willing to teach someone who knows 0
That's why I recommend Adventurers League because you don't need to commit to a particular schedule.
For example at the tabletop shop I go to, games are listed every Thursday in addition to the occasional Fridays and Saturdays.
If people are free they sign up for it and play. If they're not available then they can sign up when they do have the time.
Ahhh ok i understand
This also applies to the online Adventurers League games because each adventure is self contained.
You probably won't find a game to play on the same day you start looking because a D&D game takes type to setup.
Places like #1050208806006702081 message may have games listed for today that have available seats.
If you you don't mind paying for a seat you can check out https://startplaying.games/search
You could also play this free intro adventure book on dnd beyond called before the storm: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Lastly you can get a pdf of a solo dnd adventure books at places like obvious mimic: https://obviousmimic.com/en-us
if you are interested in playing right away you could join a game on StartPlaying, maybe not tonight but our session is Monday and its my 2nd time playing so fresh as well
its paid but its fast
or guaranteed is more accurate
Ngl, in my experience, it can be really scary to read so much text. I think I got the essentials kit like 2 years ago and just read and started playing this year after something clicked in my head.
Your best bet, imo, is to read the rules yourself and either get an adventure book or create a one shot by yourself so that you can teach your irl friends and DM for them.
I know you can also find games here, but it can be a bit intimidating to play with strangers. In my case, I realized someone had to step up, and it was better to just step up myself and then bring everyone along.
There's a cool spell with a really cool name that I like a lot: Beacon of Hope. Aim to be that😎
You guys are awesome thank u for the resources

I want to start playing, I tried playing before but quickly got kicked out mainly because the DM wasn't that open to creativity and I broke rules that I wasn't told of. If anyone could teach me I would be extremely thankful.
dang, I am sorry you had that experience. I have found it goes DM to DM, mine was willing to let me be a skeleton with a few other add ons, my employee who plays and DMs said heck no I wouldn't let you do such and sucj so just depends, again sorry that happened
Feel free to start with the resources posted up above.
Thank you both, I'm gonna try to get some friends into it but I don't know if they'll want to.
and I talked with a guy today that played as a Axolotl so I know there is a DM willing to make it happen for you out there
To avoid and minimize bas experiences like that, always communicate expectations and boundaries beforehand to determine compatibility before becoming invested in a play group.
I'll make sure to do that. Thanks.
No problem.
You can also start with single session adventures called one shots with different play groups before diving into a full campaign with a long term group.
does that mean you can do one shots to lvl up so to speak and then join a party? I have only had the DM raise my lvl to match the group
so I could join right away I mean
For community campaigns such West Marches or Adventurers League you can because they have guidelines that all participants follow.
If it's just random groups with no pre-establishing agreement, then that won't be possible.
that makes sense, thanks!
No problem.
For West Marches communities, these guidelines will vary from community group to community group.
For Adventurers League, the guidelines are documented and provided by WOTC itself.
im trying to make a barb character, with outlander background (player handbook 2014) but the option isnt there. i can only use 6 backgrounds from basic rules. can anyone tell me why i can pic outlander and how to do so
You need to actually own the book to pick character options that are not already included in the free basic rules.
Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only

hmm
so the only thing free accounts have is basic rules?
All accounts have the free basic rules.
i might just wait for 2024 handbook
That's fine.
once 2024 is released, it will be the new standard right? isntead of player handbook 2014?
and do we get basic rules 2024?
A 2024 version of the free basic rules will be relased. Though I don't know when that will be.
Whether you are using the 2014 PHB or the 2024 PHB, both are 5th edition books.
im just worried if i get 2014 and when 2024 is released no one will 2014
I'm not too worried about that as people don't like change and tend to stick with what they know for as long as they can.
I know some folks that took their sweet time switching from 4th edition to 5th edition.
I’m looking for practice on fifth edition D&D. I have played one round and I am looking for somebody to help me build a character or using my current pre-generated character. Just get a fill up with the game is like.
While I am unable to give people one on one help at the moment, I can point you to some resources to help you get started.

New player here, hi!
Have a character concept I think is cool but wanted to run it by some folks to see if it makes sense to them as well lol
Someone mind helping me out with that? I have an image of it I can DM.
Share it over at #character-discussion to get feedback.
Though if you haven't yet learned how D&D's character building process works, I'd recommend starting with that first.
As you may find that some character concepts won't translate well into the game's rules and mechanics.
Yeah, I know how to fill out a character sheet and such.
It's more the lore and consistency I'm worried about. All I know is what I've seen from Youtube videos and google searches xd
I plan on playing in a club that has multiple DMs, so I don't really know which one I'll be playing with--or if I'll even be playing with the same DM each week. (it's only Oneshots)
therefore I wanted to get the opinions of the general DnD populous to see if it made sense to them
If it's about lore and consistency you'll want to talk with your clubs' DM to find out if they're going to use a pre-established lore or if they'll be using their own setting and lore.
Otherwise you might find yourself investing time in something that you may not be able to use.
hi all I'm a new comer to the dnd series and was wondering what i needed to get started, i already have a character written out and i have joined my towns local dnd club and am waiting for the first game
dice, if you can't borrow any
a phone and a virtual dice rolling app work too
your character sheet
and uh, yeah a good attitude, good luck in your future games
You can get some free dnd resources here: #dnd-newcomers message
kewl thanks
Hey y’all, I’m brand new, and I’ve absolutely zero knowledge on how any of this works at all. I’ve tried going through the Character Creation process in dndbeyond.com, and then I realized I was completely lost in all the… everything. I mean, I’m so confused, I don’t even know how to ask for help here.
there's the basic rules document which might help

if you have any more questions you can ask here, it's what the channel is for
going right into the character creator can be daunting
Believe me, I was terrified, and I know scary. I’m still not ready to love again
if you mess up anything the dnd police will break down your door and beat you up
Ah, I see, a similar sense of humor to my own! And I thought one of me was more than enough
… it probably still is.
Right as you sent that my power went out

What does “Campaign Only” character privacy entail?
Only your dm/the other members of the campaign the character is assigned to can see it
So, private would be only me, and public would be anyone that can find my account in any way?
How can i find a party to play with? sometimes its hard to find someone to play with... my last DnD was almost 2 years ago xD
If you're looking for something in person, see if you have any local game stores that host events. Online, there's loads of discord servers and websites to use to find games.
i have no idea how dnd works but i wanna get into it
Try reading the handbook or the rule book
In addition to what Tambadabam said, within this server there’s #find-a-game for help finding a group, just make sure to read the instructions carefully
and how do i play with other people
And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
i got booklist
I’m not familiar with Booklist, what is that?
Okay, I think i learned how Character sheets took me over a decade to learn. Since I was dumb
good job
And the rules of the game as well because it seems kinda weird too
Just make a build aligned to your character. Follow the rules.
damn maybe dnd is really hard
it is
thx
aww shucks
2 hours by gone and im still trying to create a dwarf with senseable output xD
maybe i am just too slow
Feel free to ask questions if anything’s confusing!
I wanna home-brew a story. That would fit nicely but idk
🍺
But also don’t rush learning the rules, no one’s on a timer and no one expects you to memorize the whole rulebook
I do wanna keep the lands but I need inspiration of course
can someone send me their mountain dwarf for an example if they have it somewhere near
Like character art or a specific build?
build
You can probably ask in #character-discussion if anyone’s willing to share their sheet. However Mountain Dwarves work well with any/all classes, much like any other race.
im thinkin barbarian tbh
Star, your wisdom is wise. What’s a homebrew dm
Barbarian is great, you can check the class table for recommended stat priorities. Otherwise the class typically meshes well with two-handed weapons. The subclasses are pretty cool as well, I just don’t recommend Berserker or Battlerager specifically due to their mechanical weirdness
can i just use a ready character and steal that 😭 im too tired doing this after work
or just ask ai to create for me xd
Homebrew is a broad term that essentially means any content or content changes made for 5e that is not made by WotC (D&D’s parent company). This can include anything from custom subclasses, races, rule changes, settings, etc.
A homebrew DM would therefore be a DM that uses homebrew to some extent. In my experience the most common homebrew is a custom setting or a few rule changes.
D&DBeyond has pre-built characters available. I think you also have a Quick Builder option in the character creator that makes a character really fast
- You can get premade character sheets here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Get some rest! Can’t learn effectively if you’re tired

Hello! I am completely brand new to this, what do I do
Where do you want to start
I just joined the discord but I'm not new to dnd lol
Uh I’d like to be some kind of Ranger/archer I guess
Is there somewhere I can read up on them
Not sure if it's against rules, but you can look up any of the books in google

Thank you!!!
Guys how do I find a group that is ok with a new player joining with almost no experience I’m the game so they can teach me

Heyyy
Can Dragonborns wear helmets?
Yes, no race has any restriction on equipment unless specified otherwise
But what if it has horns?
And also shoes, are there dragonborn shoes?
Becuase they have like, claws
Doesn't matter. All equipment is assumed to fit your character
Oh ok

same here TT
i found out its not super easy due to scheduling conflicts
keeping party size below 5 or 6 can help a lot with that
whats the internet giving trouble on? too much info?
heyy yall new dm here, have a question. "The rocky slopes of the motte are covered with loose shale, scaling these slopes will require a successful DC 20 strength athletics check" does this mean the player has to roll a 20 to climb the slope?
They’re making what’s called an ability check. The total of their ability check needs to equal or exceed the DC (20) to succeed.
Since it’s a Strength check, they add their Strength modifier to the roll.
And if they’re proficient in Athletics, they also add their Proficiency Bonus.
ahh okay i get it !
also another question, "characters who search the area west of the drawbridge see several humanoid tracks in the grass and dirt" so lets say a player goes to search that area, would i have them roll a perception check or they just discover it?
It’s up to, but given the phrasing there, I’d be inclined to let them find it without a roll.
that would fall into passive right?
okay easy :)) im so paranoid about asking for too many rolls and annoying my players 😭
You’ll generally want to ask for a roll if an outcome has a chance of success or failure, and that outcome is meaningful to the story.
you know I just heard some really good DM advice which was when you want something to happen and don't want to go through rolls, make a cut scene. Put the players where you want then start the rolling. "We" spent 40mins running from a ship the DM wanted us to encounter with, we were throwing stuff off the boat to speed up lol
all she wanted to do was introduce a new player and we were "rolling" away from what she wanted
How important are these footprints? Is there a chance they could be overlooked? Are you prepared to accept the outcome of either a success or a failure?
yeah exactly, if you need them to see the people, then player blah blah with your passive you see these dudes
Even a passive still has a risk of failure.
if i want my party to find something hidden i just tell the player with the highest passive perception that they see xyz
what Harvest said, I get a passive can fail but the DM can set themselves up so to speak
Again, though, it’s also fine to just tell whoever chose to look that they find it, if you wish.
yeah i may just do that if i really need them to find something
Simply by choosing to search the area, they’ve uncovered information.
also i think im missing a thing here, does a passive mean there are no rolls? how can it fail?
I am gonna let Spam handle that, I am making it more confusing than it needs to be
Passive checks are purely a DM tool. It’s not something players ever choose to use.
If/when you want to use them is entirely up to you.
Typically they’re meant to represent the average of repeated checks made over time.
For example, instead of having players roll to check for traps every single room of the dungeon, you can simply use a passive score instead.
It can also be used if you want the players to make a roll, but simply asking for a roll would give away information you don’t want them to have.
For example, if some monsters have set up an ambush.
Asking for a perception check — even if they fail — could hint to players that there was something there they should have seen.
So you might use a passive perception instead to see if anyone notices them automatically. If not, it’s on the players to discover for themselves.
ahhh okay i think i get it. so as a hypothetical im planning for monsters to ambush my characters, id roll a perception check or something for a player without them knowing, and if the check hits they will discover the ambush before it happens?
In a situation like this, I would make the enemies roll a Dexterity (Stealth) check.
If the check is greater than the players passive perception, they ambush them.
If it's lower, the players hear the enemies, and don't get ambushed
A passive check doesn’t actually involve dice.
Instead each person has a passive score, which is 10 + whatever they’d normally add if it was a check.
A player who has +5 for a perception check would have a passive perception of 15.
If 15 equals or exceeds the DC, the player succeeds.
oooh okay so thats what i was missing, i understand it now . ty heaps yall !!
i am never getting into dnd
I'm at work but I'm kinda new to dnd, my friends homebrewed but stopped so it was never really true dnd (in the structure way) it was still fun, they just don't want to play anymore
More so, where do I go to find a group for newcomers ?
Hello everyone, I am new to dnd, so if anyone has campaign spot open i will gladly take it.
whys that dude
too much and not enough lol
@lyric fjord @severe sorrel Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
There’s also some more general advice in #learn-to-play message
also there are games designed for players like us, DMs that will walk you through it. The biggest advice I have seen over and over again is you will learn while playing and even seasoned players need to be reminded of the rules
Did you have any specific questions about the game that we can help with?
can i at least find a group that isint pride or pride2?
Not anything specific
Just like in general how to play and stuff
I usually learn how to play games by playing them and learning the rules during the game itself
But i don't have any friends who know how to play 😐
There’s an interactive adventure here that does a good job of explaining the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Keep it civil, folks.
I can probably learn while playing more likely it's more so I'll have to look in that one channel for a dm that plays at like midnight est 🫠
You’ll have to find your own group.
cmon man
Finding groups on behalf of specific players is not a service we provide.
I'm making an entire homebrew campaign from scratch but I have 0 idea how stats work.
it's based off of the game patapon 2 which released for the psp around 12 years ago
There's many, many dnd servers with many, many people looking. It just comes with time
There are loads of games in #looking-for-players
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
How much experience do you have with DnD?
I'm personally taking it slow- staying patient. I have some stuff on my hands but if a campaign I'm interested happens to come along I'm happy to join
around a months worth in total time ive spent with it over the years
I've only played one session 😭
and dm'd one session
Hey y'all. How do I switch between digital dice on DnD Beyond?
smh the template paladin only has +2 charisma they arent optimizing
I am guessing the DnD Beyond forums are mostly dead.
I can't do a word or phrase search in the forums. Hoping I can get help in here.
collections -> my dice
like the which dice to throw or appearance?
Thanks. I did find that. Did see I have several collections to choose from. But....
Ok ...got it. (Face palm)
Wwhich dice to throw. I got it figured now. Thanks.
no worries, I had to open beyond to double check lol
and thanks! I never would have discovered being able to change my dice appearance had you not asked 😅
that was "you can do that!?!" moment for sure

So I am brand new to dnd, only watched a 30minute video on youtube. I wanna get into the game with a couple of my friends. We are gonna talk over discord and im looking for the best entry for some sort of software. Virtual dices etc. Do anyone have Any recommendations?
welcome, new myself but there are resources on dndbeyond, also my DM uses Alchemy to run our maps. At least point you in a direction, didn't want you left on read with no response lol
also if you go to #learn-to-play they can help too
If you need an online software for it, roll20 is the first that comes to mind. You can show maps, roll dices, add modifiers, even create there character sheets
Wow, that sounds perfect. I have heard about dnd beyond multiple times, but im not sure if its the right thing for us. We are just looking for some simple games to get into it. dnd beyond looks to be a bit advanced?
Virtual Dices is going to depend on the virtual tabletop you groups decide to use.
This video goes over 14 different tabletops: https://youtu.be/ptzr70aVc4M
Feel free to share that with your group to decide which best suit your group's specific needs.
There’s a good article here that covers some of the more popular online options, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
I'd say dnd beyond simplifies certain aspects.
It does the math for you, clicking on the character sheet will provide additional information if needed, and it organizing character information rather well.
Okay, so beyond should be a no-brainer for us to use? Sounds like what we need
So i wont need both roll20 and beyond?'
Quite a few people use both.
Check out both, as both platforms offer a free tier.
Play around to get a feel for things and see what you gravitate towards.
If want additional guidance on using D&D Beyond's character builder you can watch this video that walks you through the process: https://youtu.be/CeIJKkpDvBY?si=BDz0bONpiyHUzwsi
im making my first campaign and i was wondering if i could adjust stats of the 'foes' in the game to my players levels, for example weakening or strengthening a foe to be more manageable for my players?
Lots of DMs do that, it's a type of homebrewing that's very common 🙂
oh thank you
What matters is that it makes sense (at least in the context of your world and game) and that you and your players have fun
that fair, it wouldnt make sense for a dragon to be really low level, maybe a baby dragon for lower stats
Helloo
See where this hobgoblin has 11 HP (2d8+2)? That's the average. You could give it between 6 and 18 and still be within the bounds of the statblock.
Can I ask something real quick?
Are there any folks from SEA out here playing DnD too?
I'm very sorry if it's personal
There certainly are. Hang about and you might meet some.
Great, cuz me n my friend been trying to play some together
Idk when we'll start but
I'll wait then
what is SEA
South East Asia
ah ok
Yea
hiya, ive been watching dnd campaigns (like for example i recently started watching critical role campaign 3) and i have kinda fallen in love with dnd.
i would love to try playing myself but i dont really know how to start.
one idea i have had is buying the starter kit and trying it out with my family. we love playing board games but im not sure if they will like dnd.
any tips?

I made a character, I have the 7 dice, I have paper and pencils, and the Player Handbook at hand

I just got a masters trial for dndbeyond. Is it not possible to dive into a premade campaign with maps? I can find some "free" cmapaigns, but the require me to make the maps myself. Unless I am missing something? 🙂
Yes are you looking for a game in person, online, or both?
Online, but first I need to read and understand all of the rules
Im asking that when I do that, will I be fully prepared to look for a game?
You don't need to read or understand all the rules to play. Starting out, you just need to understand how your character works and how combat works.
Yeah, I don't understand how the combat works
But once I do im ready to look for a game right?
I'm trying to find a game but they're all either sound uninteresting or are 18+. Why is it so hard to find a game?
If creature is standing on the edge of the cliff and someone successfully shoves it, it basically takes the fall and takes the fall damage, right?
Sure, that can happen.
For help with combat, check out this video about combat by Don't Stop Thinking: https://youtu.be/53-W7ggmA6U
As for being "ready" to find a game, what helps is understanding what aspects of D&D are fun for you because there are many ways to play D&D and sometimes those preferences are not compatible with each other.
If you don't know what parts of dnd you gravitate towards, start by playing single session adventures known as one shots.
I personally recommend D&D Adventurers League for that as it provides a new player friendly environment.
Outside of Adventurers League, to help avoid bad experiences, it is important to communicate expectations and boundaries beforehand.
When forming a group, I ask people if they are:
- Willing to go over Lines and Veils
- Willing to go over Safety Tools
- Are lgbtqia friendly
- Are disability friendly
- Willing to take to time to see if our preferences are compatible.
If someone answers no to any of these things, then I know they are likely someone I will not enjoy playing dnd with.
Thank you
Happy to help.
I haven't used Maps on dnd beyond myself, though from a quick glance they are featuring Intro to Stormwreck Isle, Frozen Sick, and Prisoner 13.
For now I'd say start there: https://www.dndbeyond.com/games
Also keep in mind it is still in alpha, so expect adventure options for this service to be limited.
Yes, but when i launch one of those campaigns, I have no maps, so i have to make the maps myself and insert monsters, npcs, etc.
I'd say the level of difficulty is dependent on on how and where you look for games.
For anyone under the age of 18, search for youth D&D programs at your local school, library, and tabletop shop.
Perhaps #ddb-support can shed some light on that.
Looking for a party that’s plays Sunday only?
There’s three official methods for determining ability scores. You should ask your DM which to use.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Hey guys! I'm pretty much new to dnd, a group of friends and I are looking to start playing, we most surely start with a one shot, I will be the DM, I've look for so much info online but I would like some recommendations of some books/webs to help me get deep withing the mechanics of all the game, thank you in advance! (Btw I don't know if this channel is the best for this but I'm a bit lost in the server hahaha)
Welcome! The Basic Rules have all the information you need to run a game, but there’s lots of other places to get tips and tricks.
We’ve got a bunch of helpful started information in #learn-to-play, for example.
Thanks! I'm also looking to get deep as a DM, in order to guide better the player, should I buy the dungeon master guide?
The DMG has some good stuff in it, but there’s a new version coming out it November that sounds like it’ll have some welcome improvements.
I’d recommend waiting for that one if you can.

Yo hello 🙋♂️ I never played dnd I wanna start playing but I have read everything I understood how the game plays but I need help on how can I make my character “correctly “ and how can I find some people to play with ?

A good first place to start is the free basic rules. It gives you an overview of the game and what to expect, including building your first character.
you can also check out #find-a-game and they can help set you up with players, I know a paid site but there are lots of option
How important and how long if so should a character background be?
depends on the player I find, some go deep others don't do anything and leave it up to the DM. I am new too but I learned the hard way of indulging too much info right away
my characters background is pages long
someone in my party had almost nothing
advise I got was at least have something to tie you to the world, parents died Batman style, want fame and glory, or maybe just bake the worlds best bread
What’s up yall new GM here wondering if anyone has advice for fun and silly magic items for my level 2 players
and a DM may want to change your backstory to fit their story. Mine went from Lich to vampire so maybe minor spoilers but we shall see!
if you are interested in a long winded backstory I can share mine but I should probably do it on #character-discussion
Answer these 3 questions with a short sentence or paragraph
1- where did you come from
2- how did you get your skills/powers
3- why are you out in the world
Simple backstory done
Would love to read it tbh so I can see a good example
I'll DM you
Yep, simple tends to be better. You can write something long and involved if you enjoy it, but it's important to remember that level 1 characters should have level 1 backstories. And the DM likely doesn't have the time to read pages upon pages of notes 😉
I played an entire campaign with a character's whose complete backstory was "He really really likes to fish."
And everything else about his personality and goals was just extrapolated from there
Is it like
A dumb question to ask what species or races are in the dnd universe?
playable or non-playable?
Playable I think, I'm new to everything
no dumb questions, most of us are new here
Two days ago I tried to fill out a character sheet
I only got the name and gender
whats the species?
13 or so. a lot depends on the DM.
Are there shapeshifters?
yes. But as a Playable race it would depend on the DM.
i have nad DM that want to RP a Character becoming a Shifter.
Okok so there are species and races
yeah my DM let me be a skeleton so just depends lol
Also what's a dm?
Dungeon Master DM and also called Game Master GM
the person who will running the game for you
they build and run the game
We have shifter race and changeling if you wanted to become a dragon you would need a high lvl spell
Oooh dope! I usually have s character I just throw into every universe I get into, but he is born like
A dragon hybrid/shapeshifter kinda thing
You’d would have to work with your DM to see what offical races they are using
I’m back
Got it! (Or I could just make a new(the 9374th one) version of him)
hello yes me am is newcomer
I got kicked like 5 seconds ago and instantly came back
Also im a blob
ohhh i see, so you were clarifying that me is not you
Yes
What kind of dnd character look like
Remember dnd has a structure to it so having a weird shapeshifting race that can turn into a dragon maybe a bit OP and would be #homebrew and would need DM approval
uhhh im just like a short dude
I’m a blob
i havent really playted before i tried one time but ehh idk
i should make a new character if im gonna try joining a campagin soon
The blobs my new character my old one was a lizard folk
You tend to make a character once you find a game but coming up with concepts for characters is good, helps give you lots of ideas
yeah i wanna be short man who likes to steal stuff cause its funny
Halfling rogue is a classic.
a shenanigan power house. lol 1 of my fav.
Although I really should say rogue halfling, to be proper.
lol
dont know what that is.
Sounds like a homebrew race
You look like an otter
Otters are great animals. lol more like Otter Pirate.
Why do the character sheets have so many stuff? What is dexterity, or constitution, ARCANA?! Class focus? Initiative? This man has no initiative, he follows the herd like a cow😭
Have a look at #learn-to-play
THANKS 💙😭
Hey how can I find a group to play with here? I have a character set up and ready to play at level 1 but I don't know how to join a game

wait how do i do this?
Do what specifically?
Play online
There’s a good article here that covers some of the more popular options:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
when making my character do i use milestone or xp?
what do you recommend
Milestone is what I prefer
Someone yesterday has posted a site to find campaign to join and host I didn’t get to save the link anyone know it
ty
It depends on what your dm is using for the campaign
Hi,wanted to learn how to play for a while but never got to the point, which are the first steps to learn? andi how can i find people to play with?
Welcome! #learn-to-play can get you started with both those questions.
im not doing allat it never ended
i feels like it goes on forever building a character haha
I can’t get enough of it lmao I make at least 3 characters a week
Welcome! #learn-to-play can get you started with both those questions.

I’ve tried to look places but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to find one shots or whatever that I don’t have to be online at a certain time every week because I can’t commit. I just want to find options to play online when I’m available
Might try #looking-for-community - some of these D&D servers offer "westmarch" style D&D games where there isn't a set DM or group of players and the games may happen whenever enough players and an available DM decide they can run a game.
Where have you looked and what have you tried?
Right now I’ve only been on roll20 really. But it’s mostly paid ones on there and the free ones are either 1000 people looking for groups or there’s not enough games available. I’m trying to find a place on dnd beyond where I can find games too. Just can’t figure out how to search or find random games when I’m online
Thank you!
I'd also add that on top of knowing where to look for play groups, how you reach out can impact your chances of being invited as well as ensuring that a group is right for you.
When forming a group, I ask people if they are:
- Willing to go over Lines and Veils
- Willing to go over Safety Tools
- Are lgbtqia friendly
- Are disability friendly
- Willing to take to time to see if our preferences are compatible.
If someone answers no to any of these things, then I know they are likely someone I will not enjoy playing dnd with.
what book do i get to have all the stats and stuff i need to know for the loxonon race
ty
Iv been working on starting a group but I need to make a character
Anybody got a good race or class I could do that would be about like taming beasts?
Iv thought about a kobold/owlin and druid/ranger but I don’t know if anything would be that much about beasts
What books do you own or have access to?
What are the guidelines that the DM is asking players to follow?
So far i dont have a dm yet and no books
Are you familiar with the character building process?
Picking a race, class, stats, etc.
This is my first ever character
I have never played before
Never done this before
Then for now, I'd recommend learning about the mechanics of building a character first.
- One Shot Questers has a 3 minute overview here: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
- If you want something that mechanically works, you can get premade character sheets here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
- You can also learn how to use D&D Beyond's character creator here: https://youtu.be/CeIJKkpDvBY?si=BDz0bONpiyHUzwsi
- The process is pretty much the same regardless of the class you choose.
How many ideals can one character have?
I pick 2 from the list provided by my chosen background.
Though you can pick as many as you'd like.
I tried that and plan to go more into other videos and stuff when I get past the class and race
I just don’t know which class or race to pick
Start with the options available to you through the free basic rules since you own none of the books.
you mentioned : community-style games like West Marches, one-shots, and more.. what are these in more detail?
West march: instead of having normal sessions the group all decides on a time, a lot of the stuff is tied to irl time, when you aren't actively in a session your character basically goes into downtime and stuff
one shot: dnd but the story is all in one session, you go through it all in "one shot" as opposed to a campaign made of many sessions
Good afternoon all,
Is anyone playing on DND Beyond?
I'm willing to join a campaign.
i made a character and am also browsing the looking for to find a game
Quite a few people use dnd beyond. For games options I posted a summary here: #dnd-newcomers message
@true musk thank you
They are apparently going through updates now, but I'm ecstatic to introduce someone to my Ranger/Druid.
I imagine there are other ppl in this room with the same inclinations.
For community campaigns such West Marches or Adventurers League you have guidelines that all participants agree to follow.
For West Marches communities, these guidelines will vary from community group to community group.
Generally the way it works is you'll have rotating set of different DMs that will run their own self contained adventures that are completed in a single session. Anyone who is avaiable for that particular game can join and can continue playing the same character even if the DM and play group differ.
this may be a little more up my alley
For Adventurers League, the guidelines are documented and provided by WOTC itself.
I will say that I am biased and tend to recommend D&D Adventurers League the most.
- You can learn all about it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- You can play online and in person.
- It provides a low barrier for entry. Players just commit to a single session at a time. Usually 2-4 hours.
- The adventures for level 1 characters are often designed to teach you basics.
- As you play, you'll discover what types of players and dungeon master you gravitate towards.
- You'll have a higher chance of forming a long lasting group by reaching out to people you have establish history with through these independent play sessions.
I'm so confused on what numbers to put on the character sheet
For the strength and wisdom and stuff like that
Well, I put modifiers in the bigger space under stats but i also seen the regular number in the bigger space.
I prefer modifiers be seen more because theyre what im putting down for skills
Do you mean what put down for stats?
Yess
Check the pinned posts for a link to the free basic rules, which will guide you through to what you need to put into each part
Ive been told not to do a wizard/ranger/paladin multiclass even as a joke so ... idk
Thank you
ranger/fighter/rogue/cleric/warlock/sorcerer is unrionically a very good build
Why?
5 gloomstalker ranger, 4 assasin rogue for auto crits vs suprised targets/advantage, 4 battlemaster fighter for action surge and manuevers, 1 cleric for lifeberries, 5 warlock for Eldritch Smite and level 3 pact slots (pass without trace, fly, counterspell, etc), 1 divine soul sorc for defense options
not in that order ofc but thats the full build
it does insane nova damage and strong utility/out of combat healing
i wanna make this character.
dms
damage more seconds?
