has anyone ever dm'd in french when they are english speakers? 😭
metamagic costs different amounts of points.
That's up to the individual DMs who are bilingual. We can't answer that really.
is it in the same page as the meta spells for the cost?
ripp because im gonna run a campaign in a language i can speak but do you have any like template or tips for descriptive sequences?
#dm-discussion would be a better place to ask for DMing advice.
font of magic and metamagic are right behind each other and cover all the rules for sorcery points
oh i didnt see that thanks ;-;
the cost for a metamagic is mentioned in the text describing what it does
that's what I was thinking, honesty I dislike how the book is set up as it's very "noisy" for me to find things
thanks for the help mate!

Hi! I'm brand new here but i've DMed a few basic versions of DND before! i'm happy to be here!
What's the best way to run specific encounters? I'm completely new to DnD and am trying to run Dragon of Icespire Peak with my family. A bunch of different maps and I'm unsure of the best way to go about utilizing them. Do I download/print out the maps? Use a digital version of them?
Also apologies if this question needs to go in the discussion chat.
#dm-discussion would be a better place to ask
Thx

There are dozens of new people each day. We can't do private tutorials
i imagine sorry
is the campaign type im looking for called a one shot? Just looking for a short campagin to dip my toes into before a year+
generally one shots are games that occur over one session (maybe 2 if the group gets distracted, or cannot player for more than a few hours at a time). So, yes, that can be a good way to get in and experience the game 🙂
how or where would i go about finding a one shot group?
you can check our looking-for channels to find groups.. #looking-for-players is where DMs go to advertise their tables.. you can find the rules for using our channels over in #find-a-game
one of our users, and frequent contributors to this channel iamrazorwing has compiled more helpful information for finding games here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
One shot is just an adventure that starts and finishes in the same session.
hey guys! it's my first time creating a cleric, and i wanted to ask, is 16 wisdom enough?
im trying to spread it a bit to con as well
16 is good to have for a level one character.
what are the rules for point buy? what is the max i can go to on a stat? can i take two away from on and go 8?
all your stats start at 8
you can raise a stat by 1 by spending a point equal to the modifier of the stat (min 1)
so spend 1 point to go from 8 to 9 for example
the maximum you can get from point buy is 15 and you get 27 points total
this is the https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores Point buy system
how do i find a D&D campaign?
I won't lie I would like a pointer on how to find a game too, my brain, can't seem to understand, how some of these systems work. Or if this is even the right chat to ask it in.
For in person games you can:

is there any way to play dnd without buying any of the handbooks or anything? just by using a virtual dice and some notebooks?
The basic rules are free.
I learnt(ish), by running a solo campaign (death knights squire), and reading the most basic rules. I think it's pretty accessible like that.
Also building characters on dnd beyond was both fun and easy. Imo
The Basic Rules have everything you need to be able to play.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Oftentimes group members will share their books as well.
You could also check your local library to see if they have the books available tor use.
I've been interested in dnd for awhile and recently finally decided to become a DM
I'm new to this and watched a couple videos of what to expect if I run a campaign
Do you guys have any tips on being a DM or what to do when you gotta improv
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
- Baldur's Gate 3 Set
- Baldur's Gate Gazeteer
- Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
- Giants of the Star Forge
- Honor Among Thieves Bundle
- Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden Dice Set
- Intro to Stormwreck Isle
- LEGO: Red Dragon's Tale
- Lightning Keep
- Monstrous Compendium Volume Two: Dragonlance Monsters
- Prisoner 13
- Unearthed Arcana Playtesting
Best place is with a prewritten adventure designed to be completed in a single session.

Hi. Thinking about getting back into D&D. I haven’t played since the BECMI days. But after the Lego set got released my son was interested so we played an intro to adventurers league run at a game day we attended. Now he wants to get into it. So I will pick up a starter kit and maybe the essential kit if we can find one in stock. Obviously it’s not worth buying the handbooks when new books are about to be released. My question is there any benefit going digital or physical or both. I’m not sure if there are any groups that play locally to me with hours that I can attend with my son he is only 12. Is there any benefit having digital as I’m not sure how you play online with DnD beyond. Any advice
D&D beyond does the following things:
a) a character sheet
b) a ressource to look up and search your books in a digital format, which all the advantages (and disadvantages) that has over physical books and PDFs)
c) it has tools to assist players and DMs, like encounter builder, homebrew tools, digital dice etc.
you dont play online dnd on D&D beyond, its a tool assisting you to do so

Hi I'm wanting to start being a DM for my son and his friends. I've got a physical copy of the Essentials Kit but the text is small and hard to read. With the digital resources are you able to increase the font size and everything? (I'm guessing you can but want to confirm before dropping money on it). Thanks 🙂
Check out the links above.
if you visit the website, your browser will let you adjust text sizes, yes
you can try the free portions of D&D Beyond to see if that works like you want
Cool thanks 🙂
I think The Essentials Kit still comes with a code to get you the digitial version of the adventure on D&D Beyond.
yeah essentials kit should give you the digital version for free
Man this game is really hard lol. I've never really got to play before and myself and a group of friends wanted to give it a try. I got the starter kit and I've been watching YouTube guides but I must be the world's biggest moron coz I just don't seem to get it. My friends don't seem interested in playing unless I spearhead the process

can you be more direct with what you dont understand? Mind, you dont need to know every rule by heart to start playing
I seem to have a pretty basic understanding of how character creation works. It's a little foreign to me but nothing too crazy. What I'm really struggling with is the DM stuff. I don't really understand how people run a campaign at all, and the abundance of stuff that I seemingly need to know in advance is making my eyes glaze
Maybe it's because I'm not looking at the right things yet, but the entire role is foreign
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure have a look at this it’s a starter adventure with tons of tips for DMing
The DM is the referee, aribitrator of the rules, and the one who plays all NPCs and monsters who aren't the PCs. The DM sometimes create the adventure or even the world.
it can be a lot. using prewritten adventures can help, but they do require you to prepare them too.
a lot of DM work is having a good grasp of who are the important NPCs/Monsters in your Adventure and what do they want
a lot of the rest can be improvised
I would suggest starting with a really small adventure like a one shot. that way, the info you need to retain is not too much
Yeah I understand the function, I just am struggling really hard with the "how" currently haha. I appreciate the advice from everyone
Check out actual plays on Youtube and Twitch of how games are run. Mind you that some of those games have professional actors playing.
you could try to look at some actual play shows on youtube
If you want DMing advice then head on over to #dm-discussion
Oh I've seen them but it just comes off like really fluidly, I don't really understand how they get to that point to begin with
This channel is more for helping new players learn the rules of the game.
Years of experience (which includes learning from your mistakes).
Is that not what I'm doing tho???
You're asking for DMing advice and not necessarily the rules of the game.
I'm asking how DMing works, not advice
DM'ing works by dictating how the game world responds to the players, including things like how non-player characters (such as the shop keeper, tavern owner, or king) responds, and how hostile monsters attack them
You run the adventure books, or write your own
It's like being the games designer and game engine all in one
DMing requires a some amount of improv. basically your players do something and you react in the situation like you think the world/characters would logically react.
you dont have to be as good as youtubers at this
especially when you first start
Thanks for linking this by the way I'm going to go give it a read. Hopefully it helps clear some confusion
Wow, this pdf is so incredibly digestible, I've already gone from "I have no idea what I'm doing" to being genuinely excited to try and run this. Thank you so much
It’s a great little adventure to help newcomers
How do I do a passive perception check for my players as a dm? I have some Goblins waiting to ambush them and I want to see if they notice them.
the goblins roll for stealth. then you check your player's passive perception score
I keep a spreadsheet of my player's passive scores to make it easier
So their stealth roll has to beat the party's passive perception?
a pc would be surprised till their first round of combat is over if all the goblins rolled higher stealth than their passive perception.
Also does everybody get surprised or could I do the checks for each one?
surprise is determined individually. but each goblins only makes one check to hide from all the PCs
so for example
Goblins stealth checks: 13, 11, 16, 14
PC passive perceptions
A)10, B)12, C)14, D)14
PC A) would be surprised, because all the goblins rolled higher. the other PCs are not surprised, because they spot at least one gobbo.
however, the third goblin would be hidden from all PCs, while the first and last gobbo would be hidden only from PC A and B
Hello! I have a question :)
My DM asked of me to make a tabaxi (?) character and I'm so lost-
I've done all my character sheets on dnd and beyond with the already given races and such before but tabaxis aren't one of them and I think I need to pay for some digital book to be able to get the race?
I read somewhere that we could buy the races one by one before but I think that the feature has been removed :(
I can't exactly pay 30+ dollars since I'm a student and the currency of my country makes it so so expensive 😭
Does anyone have any advice on how I can make a tabaxi character without me having to pay up such a high price for me? I don't know if this is the right channel to ask such question, sorry in advance.
If they have an active DDB subscription with content sharing enabled, you can make a character in their campaign with access to the sources they've provided (and if they're asking you to create a character of a specific non-core race, I would expect them to do so).
Hey there! I wanna get into DnD more so getting the Player's Handbook is probably a good idea. With the new version coming up in September, I was wondering if people generally lean towards playing with the new 2024 classes or sticking to the 2014 version? I don't wanna get the 2014 PHB if it's gonna be outdated in a few weeks time 😅
I have a question, I'm a complete newbie I only know a few things and I really want to learn as i do campaigns 😭 where do I find campaigns/DMs that are okay with teaching TwT
I’m a newbie to this
Hi all 👋🏼, I went to my first DnD session last night after transitioning from BG3.
I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for an adventurer travel bag / case?
Looking for one to carry a mini figure, dice, notepad, dice tray and phone stand.
Yesterday I used a cable management bag which worked fine but want to upgrade to something special 😇
Hello I'm new here and still learning DND. I would like to ask about learning spells when leveling up and how does it work?
Depends on your class. Which are you playing?
g man? aint no way
I play a bard but sometimes wizard
Confused on how many spells can I add when leveling up isit 1 or more?
Or it doesn't have a spell count limit?
Something like this https://amzn.eu/d/8ey2lkk you can fit quite a lot inside if you remove one of the trays
bro how old is dnd for it to be that deep
"The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table. For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the bard spells you know and replace it with another spell from the bard spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots."
The table is just under where this link takes you: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#QuickBuild2
Thank you so much for your help, I'm a beginner DM and this will definitely help me
Thanks a bunch
What??
If my players decide to not use a light source and don't have darkvision can they do anything at all in a dark cave?
am saying how old it is
Complete darkness counts as a heavily obscured area: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#VisionandLight
About fifty years.
Thank youuuu! :)

Thank you, that sort of thing but looking for a wide range
hi
Hi! I’m very new to DND and I’m looking for some help with where to look for info on multi-classing for my character. I want to multi-class but I’m not sure what classes work best with each other and/or if I can use any classes together and it be efficient for my character’s skills. ( hope this makes sense lol)
Generally, multiclassing isn't recommended until you have a firm grasp of the rules, but if you'd like to look at some options head over to #character-discussion and tell us what you've got to start from.

Hey can anyone give me some tips for roleplaying npcs? I'm trying to DM for the first time.
Yo guys i am new to dnd, and i want to learn how to play it. I would like to learn by playing the game, but i dont have anyone to play with so is there like a thing here where people start dnd campaigns with people and play online?
One line of physical description, two personality traits, something they want and something they fear. Don't feel you have to stay in voice for everything they say. Ask for more in #dm-discussion if you like.
Determine whether their goals align or conflict with the players goals as with that of the party's.
For example, a shopkeeper is likely going to be friendly to the party because their goal is to sell things and customer's goals are to buy things. Plus, a shopkeeper is more willing to give discounts to the party is trying to defeat the dragon that is terrorising his town.

so im making a character right now and i really want them to be a cleric with the background of an undertaker, because of it im wondering if instead of having a typical weapon they could just beat people with a coffin they carry around early on and pick up weapons as they go throughout the adventure. would that be okay or is that not allowed? this is my first character so im still not entirely sure about rules and stuff!!
Hi there. I hope this is the right chat. I'm learning D&D and was hoping there might be a good book to get for learning?
Have you looked at the free basic rules

Picking up weapons as you go, perfectly valid. Hitting people with a coffin, not by default. It would count as an improvised weapon at best and do very little damage.
i would say just read the basic rules (or as much you want to read) and then hopping into a session of people who are open and accepting of new players
thank you ^0^!
I'm currently in 2 campaigns just wanted to make myself more known to the game
i would say read the handbooks if you want to
me personally, i read them but never got a lot of substance from them as i learned a lot quicker from just playing the game and making mistakes
You could also follow D&D streams/podcasts - understanding that many of these are entertainment first rather than "how to play D&D rules as written".
Alrighty. I listen/watch a few, what made me want to get into it. I just didn't know if the books were worth checking out or not. I've only played a ranger with my characters so I didn't know if maybe these books went more in to depth about each class.
i can't recall off the top my head but the player handbook goes into more depth and maybe the basic rules does as well
but there a lot of youtube videos that will do an a lot better job than reading imo
Yeah books like the Players Handbook unlock more character/game options and yes they may provide a bit more detail and "lore".
how goes it
Suppose someone came in with 0 knowledge about how to actually play yet is interested in learning the basics and hoping on games
How would this person go about doing so

Alr thanks
No problemo
Im having trouble with the links in the #find community
Its there a more specific place ti go for that?
Read the information in #find-a-game carefully
The bot commands start with /looking-for then select the channel you want to post in (so /looking-for community)
Then fill in the form the bot gives you.
Once submitted it gets posted into the specified channel and attaches a thread that folks can use to make corrections/updates and communicate their interest.
Question: am I restricted to classes on the dnd beyond website ? Like say I wanted to created a fairy hivemind or an undead guitarist, how can I go about doing that ?
AN undead guitarist could be qualified a bard
And like I say to literally every new players:
Ask your dm.
Each dm has their own rules and qualifications
Some dms may say no to homebrew, some yes, some depends
There are 12 classes in D&D, each with several different subclasses to choose from at level 3.
Your best approach is to look at the mechanics that each class and subclass has to offer, then use that to build out your character concept.
For example a guitarist falls into the bard class and there are racial options that can fit the undead category.
You can see all the racial options that have already been made here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Thanks for the help guys!
I do admit thought in terms of skelly-men dnd is quite lacking
So many undead monsters yet theirs no like obvious skeletal race (exept like scourge or undead/undying warlock)
I don't even know how to find a DnD group to start playing with... So I was hoping joining this discord group may give me some sort of insight?
go here, read that, and shabading badabang ya got yourself a base
Thank you❣️
Reborn is sorta supposed to be a catch-all for undead-related races. There’s also a Skeleton race in the DMG, but it’s not very good and not really meant to be used by players
Hello! I was wondering if anyone could show me some resources for a new player wanting to be a DM? I've tried being a player but I tend to run into people who consider themselves 'forever DMs' who end up not enjoying themselves or just don't seem to have fun being there. So I thought I'd give DMing a shot. ^^

The Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) is an official sourcebook containing guidance, special rules, and options for DMs. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordDMG

This video by PointyHat covers aspects of being DMing that often gets overlooked: https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4
Oh cool. Thanks! I've just heard the role can be really intimidating, but I do have genuine story ideas and character ideas for NPCs that I'd love to share.
Start with pre-written adventures as you build up your skill set.
While creating a story is one part of DMing a campaign, level design, combat balancing, and an umbrella of other skills that make up game design are the other parts of it.
nod nod
If you need any other DMing advice you can always ask in #dm-discussion
Might be useful while I look through all the material.
It all seems pretty intimidating since I've never played before, but I can never find a game as a player with a DM that feels like they want to be there.
That tend to occur because groups don't always check if the type of game the players want to play in is the same type of game the DM wants to run.
Time is the most common enemy
Hello! How does armor work?
Like heavy armor -- It has an ac of 16 in the case of chainmail, does that mean my base AC is 16 before applying dexterity? Or does it add 3 to my current ac?
Your AC is 16 you don’t add dex to heavy armour
Light armour is +dex
Medium is +dex(max 2)
Oh yeah, my bad
So your base AC becomes that of the armor you're wearing + your dex depending on the armor type?

Hello I'm brand new to DnD, is there any way to get involved in a campaign or have anyone teach etc yeah any advice or help would be appreciated
If you find someone who's up for a text-based play-by-post game that is welcoming to beginners let me know 😅
Does anyone know a good app that won't cost me an arm and a leg for making character sheets and stuff?
Dnd Beyond is free for the basic stuff, and easy to use
so I'm guessing this isn't the best place to look? sorry I'll leave
I said that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg lol, if i want to make a character that is anything but the basic races from tiefling to dragonborn, I'm out of luck
Any legal way is gonna cost you, and the official DnD server isn't exactly the place to get pointed towards pirated content, which anything that gives you more than the base stuff for free is gonna be (:
fair
One way is to get into a group where someone owns the content, and has it shared
takes a bit longer but is good
hey can someone in dms help me understand combat 😭 i have alot of stuff to ask
Ask it here, that's the purpose of the channel
We prefer people don't try and solicit others into PMs
alr my bad
i dont wanna explode the chat thats why i said so
what do i need to do to see how much damage is done and how much damage is removed by armor
with a dagger for example
Hii
Im new to dnd and its rules, but Ive seen a lot of people having fun playing it so i hope to be able to learn more here! :3
The weapon you are using has an assigned damage dice that you roll when you hit. The chapter on equipment lists the weapons and their damage.
Armor doesn’t subtract damage, but modifies your AC which determines whether or not you get hit at all.
wdym by chapter? on the sheet or the book?
The book.
Yeah, these questions do suggest that you perhaps haven't cracked open the basic rules
Which is a really good place to start
Ok thank you so much
The Colville playlist is pretty great. I also like this guide: https://howtogm.guide/
yeah i have the players handbook but was so overwhelmed i tried watching vids but that didnt work.
ill make sure to check it out now
I'm kinda confused about how many spells wizards get at level 1?
So I've been told that wizards get 3 cantrips + 6 level 1 spells?
But DnDbeyond allows for 3 cantrips + 1 level 1 spell?
Not sure why that would be. #ddb-support is for help with the website. You can see from this text (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/8-wizard#ClassFeatures) and the chart above that they do get 3 cantrips and 6 spells at level 1.
You might be confusing how many spell go in your spellbook vs how many spells you can prepare
Oh. Then I might've misread something. I guess I messed up lol
Been making an unintentionally underpowered wizard with just a single lv1 spell 😔
At 1st level, you learn 6 spells, which means they go in your spellbook. You prepare a number of spells equal to your Int Mod + Your wizard level. Preparing a spell means you are able to cast it that day. You can’t cast every spell you know.
So, if your Intelligence Score is 10 or lower, then you would only be able to prepare 1 spell
int 15
So you should be able to prepare 3 spells (+2 INT modifier and 1 from your level).
Out of curiosity, what race is your character?
Half-Elf
Was gonna make him an elf, but there is so many elves so I didn't know which one to choose. 😅
Hmm ok fair enough. I only asked because I was wondering if that one spell came from your race and you just never did your wizard spells at all. But that doesn’t seem to be the case either.
A 1st level wizard with 15 Intelligence should 6 spells in their spellbook, and be able to prepare 3 of them
Plus the 3 cantrips
So 9 spells total? But only 6 can be active at one time?
That's one way of putting it. Cantrips are set (more or less), whereas your prepared spells can be changed per long rest.
It’s easier to think of cantrips as their own thing, because they don’t go in your spell book and you can’t change them when you prepare spells. They are a permanent thing
Alright.

Hello my dad introduced me to dnd and it seemed like fun so i thought I mite try it and I already have my character made too
My character is in my discord bio
I don’t even know where to start I have a character but need guidance. I play 40K so I’m familiar with some stuff regarding table top games.
Well 40k isn't a tabletop roleplaying game, so you don't really need to bring any of that knowledge over
Best place to start is #learn-to-play
Ok thank you

I've attempted to create characters before and I own a character sheet but I'm not sure how to fill it out properly. And I'm also wondering how to find a group to play with, the channel at the bottom of the list seems to be inactive and I'm not sure if I can use another channel to find a game / dm
Have you read the free basic rules yet?
As for finding a game, there’s #find-a-game within this server.

Are you a DM and do you have a group of players that want to play that adventure?
If you feel it would be a good adventure to run, then sure.
There are easier ones to use for new players/DMs if you're just starting out as a new DM.
But if you think it will be fun, then go for it.
If you have specific questions about the module, you can ask in #1029833015423143957 in the correct channel
But I wanted to get curse of strhad but it’s not at the store
Hi, I’m new to this and I never played before but it seem fun. Somebody teach me how to play.

hello, Im becoming a DM and was building a campaign solely through discord. I was wondering if anyone uses a website for maps and keeping track of character stats and NPC
campaign i want to do with my group who some are seasoned and i guess unbaked lol dragon of icespire peak as a beginner
There are a wide variety of tools - I'd check with folks in #third-party and see what tools they like to use and why.
I'd also suggest testing a variety of tools and see what works best for you.
The term for a tool that handles maps and tokens is called a Virtual Table top (VTT)
To build on this Power Word Spill recently released a video showcasing 14 different virtual table tops that you can watch here: https://youtu.be/ptzr70aVc4M
I'm New and wondering if there are any groups I could join! To play
I'm kinda in a weird spot because I'm technically new....But not really. I'm a semi-long time TTRPG Player, I'm just trying to test out new systems after getting started with- And almost exclusively playing....A Different system
Well, welcome all the same! We have lots of resources here to help people get started, but you can probably skip the ones that are more focused on explaining TTRPGs in general and jump straight into the basic rules. Feel free to ask questions if you have any. We’re more than happy to help

Could be shorthand for proficiency bonus
oohhh fr, i dont know how i could forget this lol
thank you buddy
uhh, i cant understand how to calculete my steel defender's hit points
Hit Points 2 + your Intell igence modifier + five times your
artificer level (the defender has a number of Hit Dice [d8s]
equal to your artificer level)
that last thing is 5 times my raw artificer level or 5 d8s by artificer level?
It’s 5 times your artificer level
The Hit Dice part is for determining HP recovered on a short rest whenever you want to expend hit dice to do so
oh i see, thank you so much
If you’re a level 3 artificer, you’d add 15 (3 *5).
I played bg3 and loved it and wanted to get into dnd itself but I have no clue where to start

How do you guys make your characters online? I don't want to use D&D Beyond
Or a form-fillable PDF
There are a few ways, screen shots, though for online play it will depend on the VTT you're using as some provide their own to use.
Spreadsheets are a simple option.
https://gsheet2.avrae.io/
Roll20 in particular has recently updated their character creator.
Didn't hear about foundry.
Main thing is that your mileage may vary depending on how you're playing with others.
I was trying to use Roll20 but it's bugged, can't access the character creator at all
Must be because of their updates. Might need to try again later, though #third-party may have a solution for you.
Seems they have two currently available the usual one and the 2024 beta version.

is there a guide on battles? i find that to be the most confusing part because i was told once that there are no maps in dnd, but then spells have like ranges and stuff??
There are grid maps you can use. Some games chose to use theater of the mind which doesn't use maps but there's no rule for or against. Combat is easier with a map.
Or at least I find it easier on a map
are the baldur's gate 3 actoins 1 to 1 with actual DnD?
i've played baldur's gate but i don't see in the rules anywhere about there being a bonus action

The bot post above can help you jump from bg3 to dnd.
I’m new to dnd and discord. Not sure where to start. I have played 3 irl sessions of dnd but still don’t fully understand what’s going on. I have the phb so I’m some what comfortable with the game I just need more experience. I’m also planning on dming a game if Every Day Heroes with my family. I know this is a lot but I really want to get involved. Thanks for any help
So is their a way for me to play DND. With a small group or by myself
You can go to the “find a game” chat for instructions to find a session online but if you wanna do a solo you could buy a subscription discord bot or try chatGPT
Or use the solo handbook
ChatGPT isn't really going to give you a decent long term experience. It doesn't remember the state like a person would
With a small group will always work. I dm a group of 3 players
im new to dnd and i wanna play
Welcome Tez, to D&D
#looking-for-dm if you want to find a group to play in
you mean #looking-for-players right?
:(
Whats up?
well
I watched all of the tutorials
I assumed you had to get everything ready before getting into a group
nvm
Oh no not at all
well no, you can read the basic rules
You often find a group before making the character
also people in #character-discussion can help you with making a character and what to do with that, if you need help with it
wsg
how do i play dnd im kinda new
my friend played a fake dnd with me but i wanna know the real thing
how do you play dnd
:(
thats a pretty vague question, but ill try my best
there should be people available in some channel here to help with character creation, if not just dm me or smth, ill help
i have some left over ocs i can use
i could run you through some small oneshot to get you used to the rules at some point
oh awesome!!
it's always good to have some material to work with
im useless at drawing, i kidnap the internet's work
star, i am expecting an essay at this rate ;-;
lmao
im mentally prepping myself as we speak
oh lord
😭😭😭😭
"sorry guys, needed to split up the message into 3 blocks"
lmao
i have no clue who either of you are, but im totally down as is
You should check the pinned posts as well as #learn-to-play . They contain a link to the free basic rules. If you want to be a player you can read through chapter 11. Don’t stress memorizing every rule but def be familiar with the rules regarding character creation, combat, and skill checks. I recommend making a practice character and sending it to #character-discussion for feedback after that, or once you feel confident in your reading you can try finding a game. In this server there’s #find-a-game but there’s many other avenues both online and irl to find one.
my friend and me have this joke dnd game called dndeeznuts
but like back on topic, you basically just need a character sheet, and a reasonable dm who can teach you actively whilst youre playing
ok👍
best way to learn this game is by learning in the moment imo
yup
(i learnt it by reading 3 books cover to cover, and I regret it)
uh huh
i have like a vague understanding of dnd
like i could play it but id get everything messed up
having someone more experienced there to correct and just take care of you during the process of learning makes sure you actually remember stuff right
thats why having an experienced dm is good
yeah igwym
some people can't play dnd, and that's okay
I'm a bit of a jokester
lmao
Did you read the PHB DMG and MM all in one go?
TWICE
LMAAOOOO
Cause you only really need to read the basic rules to get started lol
what is dming?
needed to make sure i prepped
Yeah that’s fair
i was a dm for 4 years before I was even a player
im currently on year 7 of playing dnd, and i have never played a long form campaign
chat i rolled a 39 on stealth with a d20 im him
i have played exactly 18 oneshots
of course you did ;-;
no
If you have a sheet or a character idea that you want feedback on there’s #character-discussion
If you have art to share there’s #dnd-arts-and-crafts
oh thx
I mean, if you have like minded people to play with, then you're honestly good to go.
id offer to dm for you if I wasn't here specifically looking for a break from dming
Hiii, so Im a DnD noob looking to find some people to chat to. I'm eager to learn as much as possible, and to gain a little more knowledge before jumping right into any campaigns or one shots. My DM's are open to anyone interested in chatting
Welcome! Did you have any specific questions in mind?
I don't even really know where to start... I have some experience of tabletop with warhammer, experience in writing/storytelling and roleplay outside of DnD. But its a little overwhelming at the beginning.
The height of my DnD specific knowledge comes from many hours in BG3, as I'm sure is the case for a bunch of newbies at the moment
Hell yeah! My warhammer experience is much more limited than I would like. Cries bc living in rural areas sucks
the scariest bit is always going to be making the first character sheet imo, its a bunch of numbers and rules
i found actually playing so much easier than making the sheet personally
and almost everyone I know that plays dnd agrees
just know that it does get a lot easier
You can check the pinned posts in this channel as well as in #learn-to-play , which have a link to the free basic rules. As a player you just need to read through Chapter 11 (don’t worry about memorizing everything, just be familiar with character creation, skill checks, and combat rules).
BG3 is like 90% D&D 5e so it shouldn’t be too hard of a transition, thankfully. I believe either the pins or one of the DynoBot posts (if you scroll up enough) has a link to a guide specifically about transitioning from BG3 to D&D 5e.
I get the general idea of how stats work, scaling for abilities and spells, general mechanics and things like that but there is just SO MUCH.
Finding a game that suits time wise and is super beginner friendly is a struggle too.
I feel like if you just go with the flow for you first one shot/campaign you re gonna know what you wanna do next time. so yeah it gets easier
I find most groups are beginner friendly even if they don’t explicitly advertise as such. I think it’s always good to ask a group you might be interested in joining
that's fair enough, i think time zones are the biggest thing honestly
i doubt many people are against beginners
I agree it’s a ton of information. Thankfully 99.99% of the time you can learn at your own pace
Yeah I haven't approached many people advertising thus far, out of trepidation mainly. But its reassuring to hear it shouldn't be too hard to find something.
Often times I’ve heard finding a group being comparable to dating, which I find true. Ideally you want to find a group that fits within your schedule, but also matches the kind of game you want to play in the environment you want to be in
so Im out of luck then. well at least i tried (joke)
Har har
i hope not, for both of our sakes...
it'll be fine
Guess the next step is to do some reading and watch a bunch of beginner guides... Then start looking for a one shot to ease in and hopefully find some people for a longer campaign at some point
My biggest piece of advice for finding a group is that “no D&D is better than bad D&D,” in the sense that you shouldn’t feel obligated to join or stay in a game that you don’t like, especially if it’s detrimental (i.e. conflicting schedules, jerk players), beginner unfriendly (i.e. heavy homebrew rules), or uncomfortable (i.e. creeps) for you to play in.
I have tried to play twice with the onle people in my area who I could find to play, and I totally agree with that
im fresh off of ending a campaign early due to the majority being problematic </3
The playstyle wasn't for me and it just made it not worth playing
The backstory part of CC baffles me too, like I don't want to be boring but I do NOT want to be the person that is doing to much also. Like, where is the balance
depends on your character level
but generally, as long as you are midway through your character's development, should all be good
I like to know the plot of the story so I can tie them into one and other
+1
It can be tricky! It depends on what level your character is at and how much backstory your DM likes. I think a decent backstory answers a core 3 questions:
- Who is your character?
- What is their personality?
- Why are they adventuring?
like if there is a king who imprisons alot of people, maybe the characters parents was some of the people the king imprisoned
This is such a good way to start out, thanks! Categorises things and makes it harder to overcomplicate things. I think I would like a campaign that starts super low levelled too, so I guess a pretty simple backstory makes more sense there.
Most campaigns start at level 1, which means the vast majority of characters are small fries just starting out on their epic. In my opinion, you want to ensure most of the cool stuff happens during the campaign, and not in your backstory.
You’ve tussled with dragons before leaving your village to hunt the rest? Highly improbable.
You’ve escaped a dragon torching your village by the skin of your teeth, swearing revenge? Much more appropriate for a level 1.
i find a lot of groups actually start at level 3 too, if they don't feel like playing a survival horror game for the first 10 sessions or so
Yeah thats the kind of thing I would be looking for anyway, much more room for characters to develop and grow into themselves as the campaign progresses then:)
I've noticed this on my (although brief) searches for a game.
levels 1 and 2 are notably squishy, 1 crit can just outright down a pc
its pretty rough sometimes
i tpk'd a party of 4 level 1s with only 1 hobgoblin
on full health
they hadn't fought anything
and they just rolled poorly
i dont think i've started at level 1 since
I mean starting out with super low HP is bound to make ANY combat encounter intense.
Level 3 seems like a nice level to give characters some more options in combat, and some more hit points to survive more than one succesful attack haha
In my experience level 1 & 2 are treated like tutorial levels, where the gloves come off from level 3 onwards
level 3 is my favourite start, everyone has a subclass so no one feels left out, health can take a few hits and its when cool abilities appear
that's fair, especially with newer players it could definitely work!!
I've had them start at 2, drop them into a super simple encounter that's made to be an easy win, and teach them mechanics through that
id just kinda ignore cr and go a little easier on em til level 3 in my case
I always ignore cr, I go by vibes and if they're too strong I quietly lower hp/bonuses mid g
fight
CR isn’t exactly a precise tool to balance encounters anyway. Many monsters (cough cough Shadows) punch way above or way below their listed CR
also mummy lords, we jumped one in a west march and got crazy xp from jt
i use it as a guesstimate, and work out what the party's cr is myself seperately
4 level 5s can laugh a mummy lord
Is there no restriction for the elongation of the pole of collapsing or is it only up to 10 ft
Hypothetically if the room is up to 100ft can the pole elongate to 100ft until it reaches the end of the room
How does level progression actually work within a campaign? Possibly a silly question, is it just DM decided amounta of XP or...
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
The pole of collapsing has 2 modes: 10ft pole or 1ft rod. It cannot become longer than 10ft
Ty
theres 2 kinds.
milestone: s the name suggests you level up when achieving milestones, preforming grand acts and such. here the dm tells you when to level up without needing to count xp
the second is Xp, in the base game you get XP based off the challenge rating of the enemy you fought (challenge rating is a rough estimate though.) so your dm tells you to add an amount of xp equal to what you defeated (killed/knocked out etc)
Hey so im new to dnd and am making a character right now. It is a human fighter, but there is still some stuff I am unsure about. Like how important are personality traits/flaws or how to pick an armor class
Armour class is determined by your Dexterity modifier or equipped armour, as appropriate.
Personality traits and the like are the role-playing part of the game, to make the character you're playing more of a person.
Hey guys, how're you all doing? I was asking about yesterday, and scrolled up and got some good info. I then created a character, where can I get the character sheet peer reviewed?
Thank youuuu
Im level two in my first campaign. I’m thinking about going Psi Warrior with 2 levels in War Wizard. Anyone have any advice for cantrips and spells to take?
Hello everyone. Hope you all are having a good day. Im completely new to DnD and really don't know anything about the rules or the characters. I just know you roll dice thats all😅. I did hear that its hella fun so I wanted to ask if anyone of you would be willing to explain this game of yours to me.

Do monks use weapons? I created a monk character in dnd beyond and it has a quarterstaff
Monks do have proficiency with certain weapons, yes.
Whether or not you choose to use those weapons is up to you. But it is an option that is available
Proficiency and starting equipment are two different things.
You do have the option of picking up any simple weapon instead of starting with a quarterstaff.
@indigo tangle what stat generation method are you using?
They mentioned point buy
Ah, ty
Of note: you can't allocate a stat higher than 15 using point buy
Isn't that the case?
It was manual
Manual isn't an option
I just used the point buy table to try not to cheat
The options are
- rolled
- point buy
- standard array
Then that makes sense. I'm cheating. Damn it
I'm trying to optimize a level 3 Eladrin Eldritch Knight, Greatweapon fighting
Not familiar with 5e in general
Using this method, 15 is the highest ability score you can end up with, before applying racial increases.
Whew, thought I had gotten this wrong before
the "manual" option on D&D Beyond exists for anyone that wants to do rolled stats and would prefer to roll their own dice IRL instead of the digital ones built into the website
So I should just use point buy? Or is my stat layout technically possible with rolling?
I've seen some characters with very high stats but I guess they rolled and got lucky?
Generally speaking, if you put a character together using standard array you're fine 99% of the time. Point buy is good 95%, but some DMs do it differently. Rolled stats are almost always with direct DM oversight only.
Look at it this way: if you know what stats you want high, medium or low, that's what you really need. Slot in the numbers you get in that order.
Ok, so I shouldn't worry too much about 18 vs 20?
I just didn't want to lose out on some value
You're unlikely to have a 20 as a 1st-level character.
If your numbers are coming from the approved method for the game the DM is running, you can assume it to be balanced. You're not going to be missing out on anything.
And you definitely won't if you're using Point Buy or Standard Array.
The highest you can get with those is a 17 to start.
We will start at level 3, but I guess it's the same stat total
Yeah, the earliest they can increase again is level 4.
Despite the fact that a suspiciously large number of unwitnessed, pre-rolled character sheets come to my table with 20's on them
Funny how all that luck disappears during the actual game
So as a follow up question, would you have a suggested spread for a lvl 3 Eladrin Eldritch knight, Greatweapon fighting?
I've only ever played casters
It is possible to start at 18 but that goes into min-maxing territory.
Are you starting at level 3?
Your most important stats are going to be Str, Con, and Int in that order. As long as you stick to them, you'll be fine!
You'll probably want heavy armor to make up for low DEX, too.
I wonder how much I should sap my dump stats to pump the others
Unless you build a DEX fighter instead of STR.
If those three 8s are in Dex and Wis, the yes
I've never played past level 3 so I'm unsure how important saves become
Or what tools you would have to supplement a trash stat
Intelligence is nice, but it's not super duper important for you. For example, you get access to the Shield spell, which is a fantastic spell! But the shield spell does the exact same thing no matter what your int is, and can be used by a fighter with 8 int the same number of times and to the same effect as a fighter with 20 int.
It's going to depend on the stats but not necessarily.
Remember D&D is a cooperative game, so a character doesn't need to be good at everything.
Party memebers can cover each other's weaknesses.
Look at the proficiencies you want.
Obviously this isn't the case with all the spells, but it's worth building around
Our tentative group is fighter, druid, barbarian, and some caster/casterhybrid
That's a good variety.
And it seems that Eldritch knight focuses on spells that don't base anything off of the spellcasting modifier, so you just need enough to learn it?
Other than GFB I guess
May be lacking in the stealth department, but it's not that big of a deal.
Is posting DnD beyond character sheets allowed?
In general with any link it is important to provide context with the link itself.
Otherwise it may get deleted.
Ignore my cheater stat spread
And if there is a better place for these questions, I can happily go there
Usually it's #character-discussion
Looks like you're still missing your spells, though.
And don't forget to equip your gear.
Thank you! I can take this discussion there
You'll want to click on the checkboxes to have the character sheet show weapon attacks and their AC with the armor.
Ok thank you! I'll adjust all that and then post in the other chat channel
I really appreciate it!
Guys I just joined, tell me what’s your fav colour
Purple
Thank u!
Let's keep things on topic, please.
One thing I will mention since this covers the basics.
Characters that are using weapons, such as Greatswords, that have the Two-Handed property cannot use a shield at the same time and as result will not gain shield benefits of a higher Armor Class.

Quick question I can't find online. How much damage would a thrown Spear do? 1d6 + Str? 1d8? Just 1d6?
The versatile property can apply whether you are throwing the weapon or making a melee attack with it, so a spear does 1d8 damage if you use 2 hands to attack with it or 1d6 damage if you use one hand. Then, you must apply this rule:
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier--the same modifier used for the attack roll--to the damage.
So it will either do 1d8+Strength or 1d6+Strength
Does anybody have a good template for a sheet that a player can use to keep track of NPCs that they meet while traveling?
So technically I can choose, when throwing?
Interesting
It depends on how many hands you have free. If something is in your other hand, like a shield or another weapon, then you can’t use it to help throw the spear
No, it's only 1d6.
Versatile. This weapon can be used with one or two hands. A damage value in parentheses appears with the property--the damage when the weapon is used with two hands to make a melee attack.
A thrown spear is a ranged attack, not a melee attack.
Throwing it with both hands won't increase the damage die.
I imagined using Weapon Bond as EK to drop my sword, get the spear in hand, then throw
Then using Weapon Bond again next turn to reequip the sword. Does that work like that?
How do i play
Oh so maybe fire bolt is just better for a ranged option
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
So I have a question, what can I do as a wizard with high stats besides intelligence?
Yeah how do Join someones thing
I can send my stats and modifiers if I need to
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups, but there's some other options described here as well: #learn-to-play message
Alright thank you
You'll probably want a high DEX (to improve your armor class) and CON (to improve your max HP and your ability to concentrate on spells).
My apologies. Good catch.
Anything you like? Intelligence is what your spells key off of, but having other stats that are high is not a bad thing.
I had a friend whose wizard had very high strength, so he had a background that gave him proficiency in athletics which allowed him to do those sorts of checks on adventures.
As spam indicated, Dex and Con are also really solid for wizards because they affect your AC and initiative (dex) and concentration saving throws, HP and etc for (con)
I see, I have like 4 manuals of bodily health (con) and quick action (dex) with a ridiculously high base stat in both. Anything I can do to make use of strenght, wisdom or charisma?
I have arcane, religion, athletics and acrobatics as my proficiencies
How did you get all that? 😅
God tier luck through manual rolls
My lowest stat was con at 16💀
And I equipped a manual of bodily health so now it's 18
Sorry, so a DM let their players roll for almost a dozen magical items? Those items are very rare wondrous.
It's very unusual for one character to have so many. What level are you starting this campaign at?
uhm , so i have a question , how do i figure out how to make a character sheet? sorry if this is the wrong place to ask , im still very new
Many? My DM just let me roll 1d20 and I rolled an 17 so he gave me 3 very rare items I of my choice
Our game is homebrew so we made up our own rules
Level 1
(Yoh should see the guy who rolled nat 20 and took 3 rings of 3 wishes)
Apologies if I read the post wrong. I saw like 4 of blank and blank which equals 8 and that is a very big number.
3 is less so but very rare items at level 1 is a bold move.
Up to the dm to balance it all for you guys though, I wish them luck
Well our dm is pretty loose with the rules since he hasn't done this in a while and just wants a campaign where we can all go wild and have fun, but I feel like it's gonna he a nightmare for him
Well you’ve only get 2 spell slots so you can’t do to much damage at the moment
Strenght 18 (+4)
Dexterity 19 (+4 + manual of quick action)
Constitution 18 ( +4 + manual of bodily health)
Intelligence 19 (+4)
Wisdom 17 (+3)
Charisma 19 (+3)
I chose dex and int for proficiency and have natural +2 charisma from being half elf. The stats are all so high I have no idea how to make full use of all of them
You don't choose proficiency in ability scores. You do in skills, as informed by your background, class and sometimes race. Saving throws get proficiency bonuses from your class too, but they're pre-set.
The Basic Rules cover the process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters
Thats one hell of a boring character
And the math on it is also wrong
Do remember that what makes characters fun is weaknesses, having a 16+ in absolutely everything defeats the purpose of having a team
after having my first try be all stats below 10, i'm taking what i can since my luck swung around
What kind of rolling method do you guys use?
4d6 for each stat
Wow,its mathematically surprising that you got that good of a statspread
did you roll in front of your dm?
we are all playing online but i was streaming my rolls using screenshare while on the DnD beyond website
we all got 3 tries total for a total of 3 different stat spreads we could choose from to make things interesting and have some leeway
Mb you got it right im the one who missread
the 3rd on wasn't as impressive so i choose the 2nd one because everyone choose their best, so our DM decided to make this campaign more difficult so we don't one shot everything and get bored
Well he could have avoided that by using standard array or point buy
Because golly having 16+ in everything is one hell of a way to have absolutely no use for teamates outside of combats
i was told that rolling 4d6 was the standard way to get your stats?
Wait 4d6 or 4d6 drop lowest?
The standard rolling would be 4d6 drop the lowest I think
I think they're just using 4d6
idk what drop lowest means
which explains the absolute broken stat spread
regular 4d6
It means you roll 4d6, remove the lowest rolled die, and then add up the remaining 3
4d6 drop lowest is the rules as written method for rolling stats
oh, i see
that makes sense, one of my friends used an online roller that didn't use that rule and she managed to roll 20+ on 2 stats
Yeah, that's not even legal 😅
Standard Array and Point Buy are the other official methods of stat generation, but yeah using 4d6 can generate totals above 20, which isn’t possible RAW from stat gen alone
(You would need magic items or very high level class features/spells to get scores >20)
i'm gonna be honest, i don't know all the rules. I'm a dnd newcomer and we all just followed what our DM told us since we trust him
so we probably broke a lot of rules with our characters
besides 1 girl who hasn't really said anything but i'm assuming she knows a lot because she has some insane builds
If you wanted to use rolling, I would point out the relevant section in the basic rules.
I do relate to a heavy homebrew newbie game though. My very first D&D game we were allowed to just set our scores to whatever we wanted
ye this is our first actual campaign and we're all going complete homebrew since it's our DM's first time playing online too
i don't know if there are actual homebrew rules though
like core rules to homebrew besides the structure of creating custom things
Also, on a personal note, I would yellow flag “insane builds” unless they can explain clearly how they’re getting whatever insane features they have. In my experience most insane builds are insane due to cheating, bad faith rules interpretations, or rules misinterpretations
I would consider changing stat generation to be a core homebrew change since 4d6 will mess with bounded accuracy a fair bit
i see
What’re some of the “insane builds” if you don’t mind me asking?
"Actual homebrew rules" is kind of an oxymoron. The term homebrew refers to rules and game content that are made up by fans or third party groups other than Wizards of the Coast (the designers of D&D). Using homebrew at all means going outside of the official rules and guidelines, so there are no guidelines for how to do it or what is or is not balanced.
the girl who is experienced in DnD has a build that she explained as "arcana cleric 1 / hexblade 1 / twilight druid 18, it can cast hexblades curse and then a ninth level magic missle with nine harvest scythe die for a (1d4 + 1 + 6)x12+9d10"
One guy was allowed to have 30 rings of 3 wishes
Ig my build is somewhat insane since i have a spell that at character level 20 casts 1d4 + 2d6 + 3d12 + 3d20 + half of users INT stat + Full users INT stat + INt modifier and a spell that can be stacked and is a bonus action that can at character level 20 encahnce my speed by 8.4 times with perfect rolls
it is overall a complete mess of a campaign to be honest
wait i didn't mean 2, i meant 20
my bad
Let's keep this channel appropriate for new players and leave some of the high complexity builds for another channel.
Why are you playing at level 20 if you are new to D&D?
i'm not, that's just the spell at it's theoretical max
i'm level 1 so rn it only does 2d6 damage
- 1d4 damage for species like elfs or bats who have better ears
i don't think i need to explain why it deafens enemies if it's a sound spell
That is not how spell like that work when using the official rules.
That would be something you and your group made up
didn't i already say this campaign is basically completely homebrew?
That word means many different things to different people
well, ig you can say that we're playing with made up rules and are ignoring certain others (like the 1d4 roll for stats which is apparently illegal)
All the DM told us is we can do pretty much whatever we want as long as he gets to check what we make up and if he allows it, we can do it
no real limits
i mean ... as long as youre having fun
ye that's pretty much the point of this campaign, just do complete chaos and have fun with our imagination
OP #homebrew not really a topic for #dnd-newcomers
If you and your group are having fun, then by all means keep having your fun. The point of a game is to have fun after all. But, if you are making up some rules and ignoring others, then there really isn't any basis of shared understanding for us to have a conversation about the game you're playing or any guidence we can give you about how to play or what to do. You're basically playing a different game than the rest of us. Its not really an appropriate discussion for this channel at this point
i was just curios about rules because i do plan on trying other campaigns with other people so i thought i should ask here about some things to make sure id on't ruin any future games for anyone when i play
my bad then, i am sorry if i wasted your time or gave you trouble 😅
It sounds like you'll probably start from square 1 if you want to learn how to play within the normal rules
is there a LFG section?
Yes!

if i want to buy a paper 2024 PHB is the fastest way to get one the DnD Beyond marketplace website?
If you're in the US or CAN, the fastest option would be to check if there's a local game store offering early access.
Those stores are allowed to start selling it up to two weeks early (Sept. 3).
Depending on the store, you may be able to preorder a copy as well to guarantee that you get one.
https://locator.wizards.com/ can help you find a store near you.
thanks for the detailed answer
Aight, thanks
hi im new to being a dm can i get some help with a few things
Just say what they are. Depending, you might need to head to #dm-discussion.
hey yall i am new to dnd and i am looking for a party to join and have fun

Question. How do you best deal with a situation where everyone knows out of character that going to do X would be the best thing, most reasonable thing fun and so on. But not anyone can think of a in character reason to not go the other way.
Do you have a specific example?
Basically. We were moving between cities. Were the dm had set up some side content and encounters. We all knew about it and wanted to engage in that. But for various RP reasons all characters were focused on teaching the next city as soon as possible.
There's a few others. But that's the best example that I can quickly type out.
In the looking for players thing, in the game style thingy, there’s a weird fraction thing that goes 50/50 or like 70/30 or watever. Whats up with that
Currently we using the excuse of momentarily lapse in basic brain function and we all forgot how left and right worked. And now we are in a dungeon
Heya, how do I find a group that would accept someone like me who's never fully played DnD before (has only watched it.) And is available to be online sessions rather than real life? (Ive had a look at DM's looking for players but none of them really feel newcomer friendly-)
Maybe try #looking-for-dm
I have but like I said- none of them look very newcomer friendly
OH- nvm i didnt try this, thanks!
In my experience many groups are beginner friendly even if not explicitly advertised as such. It’s always good to ask
Though, if your only experience with 5e is via observation you’ll probably want to check out the free basic rules which are linked in this channel as well as #learn-to-play . You don’t have to memorize everything, but the more familiar you are with them (esp regarding character creation, skill checks, and combat), the easier the transition process to a game will go
Hey so I got my players handbook in the mail today and at my lgs they are having a level 6 campaign they said I could join I want to build a level 6 wizard. I am brand new to dnd and with the players handbook and the character sheet it seems possible ot build a character but does anyone have any advice for building a first character ?
You can start with D&D Adventurers League.

Wizards on the more complex side to start off with, but if you really like the class then it shouldn’t be an issue.
In general make a character that wants to be in a group and wants to go on adventures (aka no lone wolves). For Wizard specifically, make sure to have at least 1 damaging cantrip and 1 damaging leveled spell so you’re never out of offensive options in combat.
Alright thank you also I'm not sure if you would know but like another then fireball of course what are some of the best spells for levels 1-6
That’s going to depend on what you want to do specifically, but in general Shield and Mage Armor are pretty staple defensive spells
Understand that jumping in at level 6 with a wizard character is likely going to be overwhelming.
If you're dead set on jumping into the deep-end, my recommendation is to start with a pre-built character that you know works : https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade

It's on the players to create plausible motives/reasons for their characters to interact with the adventure's contents. Occasionally there may be friction between what the DM has prepped and what characters want, but it shouldn't be constant. If so, that's a failure of communication and expectations.
I see two options, besides just going along with the adventure because it's a game: 1) Communicate with the DM that your characters really want to do X and ask if it'd be possible to add in some elements of X either alongside the original adventure OR in replacement of it. That is a big ask, though, so don't be shocked if the answer is no. Not every DM wants to do more work. 2) Create new characters who do want to go on the adventure as presented.
Why don’t we get 10th lvl spells at lvl 19? Do they just not exist?
Leveled spell only go to 9nth level.
Since that is not really newcomer question, perhaps #dnd-elder-editions can provide some more insight.
Mechanically - they don’t exist. In the lore - the gods say NOPE. Bad things happened last time a mortal got their hands on a 12th level spell.

Hey i have done everything and dnd is easier than it seems ( when playing as a player ) but how do i find people who can play via online
Check out #looking-for-players
there are also several sites with people looking for players/dms
besides this server as Skittle linked the most popular other places for finding people to play online are the various facebook pages, subreddits, and roll20 postings
me and some of my friends wanted to start dnd and well we are 7 pcs and 1 dm and we all have read the player hand book rules or at least a summary of them does our dm need to read the dm master guide book or no ?
you can all read the basic rules, they should teach you and your dm how to play and what to do:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
i see, thanks
Hey dude heres a big advice, try a campaign with like 4 pc before jumping in with 7
I know that sometimes saying "no" to your friends can suck, but what will suck even more is for the dm to run a game for 7pcs at once
Yeah
Well tbh I don't expect for all the players to stick and remain and tbh our dm might be it's first time but he can improvise and work greatly and tbh all of us players have a nice chemistry with each other so yeah it will be hella hard for the first time for it to be 7 players but I think we can manage it out barely.....
1 DM and 7 players sounds like what you've really got is 2 DMs with 3 players each
D&D isn't really designed for partys that big
Hmmm that is interesting
Campaigns are written for 4-5 players for example
Yeah but it is possible tho very hard
(you don't need to ping me)
given that this is the newcomer channel, the core recommendation would be for your first time DM'ing, don't do the very hard thing
We arnt really gonna go by a campaign tbh we are mostly gonna go by improvise everything that happens
Even if you split into two groups of 3 and 4 and run them in parallel
Hmm I might as well do that have 2 dms and 2 parties of 3 that could work really well
You can even have cross-over events then
Hmm true and it can be even more fun
But with less pressure!
Well for the first session it's going to be about the rules and how the game even works and us deciding how we gonna play it
I will bring up the idea to see if everyone is up for it
And there is also a problem tho I'm mostly asking if it is a problem. We are only running on paper and pen. We do have a set of dice and can use an app if we need more but the problem is we don't have a dm screen nor can get one so I glued some paper to make them thick and attached the dm rules shortcut onto it and called it a dm screen. And we don't even have a big enough table for us we are going to go to a park and sit on the ground 🤣 so could despite all of these make the game work ? Or no do I have to convince them to finally pay for a table at a local cafe
Ah yes it seems like I made a wall of text sorry if I bore some of u out
how do i figure out my spell dc and attack bonus
Look at the section in your classes description, it'll tell you what your spellcastering ability is
That ability modifier will then be used to calculate your spell save DC (ability modifier + proficiency bonus + 8) and your spell attack bonus (ability modifier + proficiency)
All you need is the dice and the character sheet, right?
no... you also need the books
You don’t need them
to start as a player then you'll only need the players handbook but after that you need friends and time
fair I prefer not to use D&D beyond
Essentially yes. But dnd beyond has digital character sheets and dice
Friends and time is essential tho
You can find the basic rules for free online
Is there a way to play as a wererat? I’m looking to create a character they is a halfling rouge wererat. I know there are other books and materials just wondering if it’s possible in the normal game
No. Wererats are not a player character species/race.
Eberron book gives you the shifter race, which you could flavor as a wererat
But outside of that yeah you dont get lycanthropes as a player race
I only played dnd once years ago and i dont remember anything

It could certainly work! Whether it’ll work for your group or not isn’t something we can predict, though.
well i really hope it will work for us

Hi
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
If it's about timing, don't worry. People all over the world play at all sorts of times.
I'm not sure I actually understand the theory behind this plan
But might be more of a question for #dm-discussion or the specific adventure channel if that is DoIP
Thanks
If they've got Fairy Fire prepared they could also just cast it on the area the stalker is and then render the invisibility moot.
Thanks
Hello guys, im new to dnd and dont know where to start, is there certain things i need to buy before starting dnd with my friends?
whats like a normal size for a campaign? me and like 6 other people want to play but we are all brand new
Five players in one dungeon master is a good size
The Players Hand book is a great start
It has all rhe basic rules
And its free I believe
1 DM and 6 players is on the larger size, but still within reason. You should be good to play with that group
There are many, theres always a game
oh it would be 1 dm and 7, i can see if some people dont rlly want to play
The free Basic Rules have everything you need to be able to play.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Thats alot tbh, try 2 separate groups if possible?
yeah a couple people were on the fence, so i can check if they all still wish to play
The Basic Rules contain a lot of the information from the PHB, but buying the PHB would give you access to a lot more character options.
Subclasses, feats, spells, etc.
Whats PHB 😵
Player hand book
i think players handbook
Best way to start
question about the d10 dice is the number 0 actually the bumber 10 or no its 0 and d10 is a lie and its a d9
10
It’s impossible to roll a 0 on the dice
and in a d100 it actually means 0 ? cuz on the other d10 there is already a 10
no actualy i have the dice that are 10,20,30,40 and the 1,2,3,4,5
30 and 40 will not be used in DND threes and fives won’t be used either
You don’t need a D 100 you can just roll a D10 twice
what?
D3s actually do come up very very rarely
When has a d30 been used in rules?
i have two d10s one is in the ones and the other is in tens which both make up to d100
that's not what yasin is talking about
the d10 that has a 0 after each number is the 10s place. The single digit number is the ones place. So if you roll 30 and 5 thats a 35
if you roll 80 and 2 thats an 82
etc
ok i get it my question is what if i roll a 00 and a 0 would that be 110 ? or no just 100
00 and 0 is a 100
because a d100 is supposed to give you numbers from 1 to 100
so a 00 and 1 is a 1
then how about a 30 and 0 would that make 40 ?
In fairness, 0 00 meaning 100 is something that comes up like 1% of the time.
no that would be 30
ok interesting so in d100 the 0 actually means a 0 and not a 10
correct
Dnd secretly is just math
Not so secretly, tbh
and the role playing scenarios add physics
Hey! I'm looking to start DMing a game using the Play by Post format. All of my resources for the game are on D&D Beyond if this matters. Can anyone recommend a platform for hosting the game ?
Discord or roll 20 work great
