Hey there! This would be a great question for #dm-discussion
But I suggest not gating any essential information or options behind a dice roll.
Well that's for sure 🙂 Thank you )
That’s totally valid! Just remember persuasion & deception aren’t mind control, but they are still useful tools for getting what you want
oh yeah, i thought it could be a fun idea
just being up close to someone and just persuading them to give you their keys for their home
Ello
what is a point buy system??
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
See that third bullet point (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores)
ohh so 8 is base for a stat and to add up it i use points that’s cool
Yep

How do i use the monodrone bot, i want to use it to look for a DM
Read the info and instructions in #find-a-game very carefully.
Hint: the commands start with /looking-for then select the appropriate dm (i you're looking for a DM) or players (if you're looking for players for a game).
Don't forget to look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for games that might work for you.
Thank you, ive just put a post up
should make a charator now or wait till i find my first dnd game iv watched alot of videos and it seems some things dont work with some caampaigns and people have to remake their charators how often is that the case
I would say make one to get a feel for how it works
Never hurts to make a character to get the basics down but keep in mind you may need to make a new one when you find a game
I’m having a hard time finding a campaign that will allow beginners and young players (under 18)… does anyone have any tips on where I can find a campaign that allows for that?
Honestly, you will probably have to keep looking. There are way more players than DMs and finding a game can take a long time. You can expand your search beyond the discord and check out places like Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums for open games. Social media like Reddit and Facebook where people also advertise games is an option too.
Sorry for the ping Zero - this is an excellent post about looking for games
Thank you so much :D.
Happy to help and good luck!

Ok I finished my character (I’ve been lazy for a little about it sorry) and I’ve have most of the rules memorized, should I be worried about anything else?
Playing online or in person?
Hey guys, I'm kind of new to classic DnD. What's a good way to start? Should I read the manuals first or how should I proceed?

Yo can anyone help so I never played dnd before but I know you need to find a group or something but all of them seem to be +18 and I’m not so there a way to have a only minor group adults scare me
You'll just have to read through the various listings for ones that take under 18 folks.
You may also check out #looking-for-community for other D&D servers which may have more games
Ohh ok thanks

Hi I’ve been hearing a lot about dnd and I want to get started playing it but I don’t know where to start cause I have no friends who play it and I don’t really understand character creation and stuff

Read the first four chapters on character creation.
i had a failed attempt at d&d with some buddies recently, but after getting SUPER into bg3 recently, is playing online a good way to learn?
i'm moving for uni in a few weeks and want something easy and a light commitment rather than a large campaign atm
Check #find-a-game
Some friends and I are going to be doing our first (online) campaign and I’m planning on being a bard, what are the most important stats for me?
Typically you’ll want to prioritize Charisma, Constitution, and Dexterity.
If I am a rock gnome should I maybe have some intelligence and wisdom aswell?
You won’t benefit from those as much as CHA, CON, and DEX.
CHA is your spellcasting ability, which increases the potency of your spells.
It also affects how many times you can use Bardic Inspiration.
CON increases your max HP and helps you maintain concentration on your spells.
And DEX will improve your armor class (AC), which makes you harder to hit.
Rock gnomes have only a single ability related to INT, and none directly related to WIS.
Hi y'all, v new here. I haven't joined any campaigns yet, simply made a few character concepts. I only have 1 friend who plays but he said I can't join his group bc I'm so new and their campaign is 3+ years long. I was wondering if y'all had any starter tips or info I should look into (for reference I bought the 5e handbook and find it v hard to follow)

But did you have any specific questions?
I think it's more I don't know what questions to ask. I've gathered the basics for character creation, and a very rudimentary idea of gameplay (being DM explains, PC's act, repeat), but other than that I'm lost. I don't know what I should know, how much or little RP-ideas to put into character, etc.
For example, I was making a Tiefling sorcerer with the hermit background, and one of my flaws was that I couldn't grasp genuine personal connection, but I was told that I was focusing too much on the roleplaying aspect
Different groups will value those roleplaying aspects differently.
Yo guys I’m looking for a group I’m new to DnD but I got a character made and stuff
Some people love to really explore their characters.
Some just want to bash monsters.
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Sweet , thanks dawg
Thanks, happy that it can help others.
Hi jm new to dnd and am wondering why dnd beyond isnt showing me the artificer class
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
The artificer is not part of the free basic rules
Hi, I just played a one shot campaign with a premade character and am now starting to make my own. Would Baldur's Gate 3 be a good guideline to balance my stats and skill proficiencies?
No - use the actual free basic rules
Baldurs Gate 3, while it uses D&D 5th Edition as a base, makes changes to help it be an engaging video/computer game
Trying to make a Circle of the Moon Druid with the character builder. I have the actual physical player's handbook in my hands from amazon
Do I need to buy it again to access an option in a dropdown menu?
Thank you
See this message: #dnd-newcomers message
You can use the DnDbeyond homebrew tools to recreate the things you own in a physical book (you just can't publish it for the wider community to use)
Ah! So I can use the homebrew thing
Is this still okay for a public character?
Okay so no public character
No it can work for a public character. But in the hombrew tools there is a "Publish" button that will make your homebrew item available to everyone on DnDBeyond. Don't use that button.
Got it
Will not be using that button
Thank you!
Collections > Homebrew > Create a subclass
Is this what I'm after?
Yes
For questions, feel free to check with folks in #homebrew (some have experience with the DDB's homebrew tools) and technical support in #ddb-support
Bet
Thank you
Hello I'm kinda new to dnd been playing for 2 days now and kinds confused on the rolls
What in particular is confusing you about the rolls?
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
So like with adding like +1 and stuff like that I don't know when/how to do so
Like if I'm going for an attack or saving myself
The +1 is dependant on what you're rolling for.
O omay
If you making an attack roll with a weapon then you roll a d20 + your Proficiency Bonus (if you're proficient with the weapon) + the appropriate ability modifier (Str for most melee weapons or Dex for ranged weapons).
O okay I see
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I haven't I kinda have the basises down of dnd just not the rollinv

Barbarian
Have you picked a background?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
No
Wait if it says that my race says that I can only have up to a certain age then do I have to pick that age or I can make it what I want
Anything in the normal lifespan of a dragonborn (up to 80) should be fine.
It’s theoretically possible to choose something outside the normal lifespan, too, but that’s probably something you’d need to discuss with your DM.
I don’t have one yet
The free basic rules has the following regarding Dragon Born ages.
Age
Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.
You can read more about it in the free basic rules here.

👋 Hello!
Welcome!
For alignment do I just put good or bad?
Thankyou!!! I'm DMing my first game soon and I stopped by here for a little bit of help!! ^^
My friends are all raring to go, it's a little awkward keeping them waiting so I thought I'd ask around for the stuff I'm not totally certain on!
You don't have to worry about alignment, it's just way to describe the type of actions a character makes.
For example, Superman, who is seen as a boy scout, can be described as being Lawful Good.
Where as Batman, who uses fear to scare bad guys, can be described as Chaotic Good.
While WonderWoman, who lives by a warrior's mentality, can be described as Neutral Good
Oh ok thank you so I can put neutral

Nice! Got any specific questions?
What in particular do you need help with?
One thing is an NPC I want to have, I'm not sure what race to use! I'd post an image but I can't post it here, do either of you mind if I DM it to you? ^^
She's really monstrous and spooky.
You’re welcome to share a link to the image here.
I wanna have a scary scarecrow lady in the woods for my players to stumble on but nothing I'm finding is really spooky enough with the races
Is there a reason she has to be one of those races?
What would the alternative be? Homebrewing a race?
There is an easier way.
You’re building the world. You can build it in whatever way you see fit.
She can be whatever race you want to say she is.
Or you can dodge the question entirely. Leave it a mystery.
All that really matters for the purpose of the game is what she can do, which is normally tracked by creating a statblock.
For DMs new to D&D I recommend using an established statblock and just reflavor things as something else.
For context, to flavor something is where you keep the mechanics the same but change the aesthetics.
For example you can take the statblock for a creature that does multiple slashing attacks and say it's a samurai instead.
Same stat block, different presentation. You can find monster stat blocks here : https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounter-builder
Hey player name I just put my name?
Yep
What do I do for experience points?
Okay! That's a good idea thankyou! ♥
Up to your DM
most people use Milestone so leveling will be out of your hands
I don’t have a party yet
Assume you have 0 until/unless your DM says otherwise.
Looking at the picture the Cult Fanatic statblock seems like a good fit.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16836-cult-fanatic
It's a Medium Humanoid (Any Race)
Can cast spells and asll has access to multi-attack with a dagger.
1
Ok
Yo, Wsp everyone.
Hey there!
I’m new to dnd, like rlly new. I’ve watched Critcrab lately and wanted to check it out.
Mostly wording, like what is “Homebrew” or “Homebrewing” and also how do I start?
Homebrew refers to user-made content (like races, spells, etc.) rather than the official stuff.
Ooooh gotcha
Are you asking how to get started with homebrew specifically, or just D&D in general?
D&D in general yeah
(I wouldn’t advise the former if you haven’t done the latter.
)
We don't recommend new players to homebrew.

Oh thats very convenient
And that is oddly specific
Well it’s fun can I?
I mean who am I to judge so go ahead I suppose, if its chaotic then it is fun after all fr
Haha 🤣
That’s probably one you’ll want to discuss with your group first.
Different groups may have different opinions on bringing topics like racism into the game.
Ok
Personally, I’d steer clear of anything I think might make someone uncomfortable, unless we’ve discussed it as a group ahead of time.
A few things to clarify.
The background is something you select, similar to race or class, as it provides proficiencies in addtional skills, tools, languages, and determines your starting gold.
A backstory is the story before the character became an adventuers.
With a backstory you want to answer these key questions.
- Why is the character adventuring?
- Why do they need the help of the party? D&D being a cooperative game.
Kk
100%
When it comes to divisive topics and issues, it's best to avoid them as it can cross someone's lines and veils.
For character backstories these three videos by Ginny Di provide good context.
The first covers common pitfalls players can fall when coming up with a backstory: https://youtu.be/S1YW7oUzs0s
The second focuses on guidelines you can use for character goals for proactive roleplayind: https://youtu.be/DXUnEk4cuYI?si=WSZSR2BII3jwsvED
The third is about Ginny re-creating her character using the insights she's gain over the years as a player and GM: https://youtu.be/QnFStvEOVcA?si=P-I33-AV5oZSi-t3
Backgrounds in DnD have some benefits. Just like with your race and class. What did your burly barbarian do before becoming a proper adventurer? Perhaps he lived off the land, rarely enjoying the comforts of civilization? Outlander would be the best background for you. However if your character worked as a thug for a small group of thieves or a known criminal organization, I suggest picking the Criminal background.
What does the term 1d4, 2d4 and so on mean?-
Dice
The first number is the amount of dice the second is the amount of sides

Ah icic
Hey
Hey I'm a player in a few campaigns and thinking about running one, do y'all have any recommendations for a prewritten adventure to run for a group of 5?
Might wanna try a one shot first
Group of five including yourself?
Or five players
5players
I have been thinking about that as an option
Try Frozen Sick and then do whatever you want after that

Hi
o/ quick question, which is more fun, playing a bugbear barbarian/rogue or a vedalken barbarian rogue?
What does join a group mean
Dnd is a group game really between 3-6 people as the PCs and one DM
do you guys think an all charisma character build would be handy?
This channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started with the core rules and game mechanics
There’s too many variables to give any sort of answer, what sounds the most fun to you will be the best one for you to play. If you plan the latter, just clear Vedalken by your DM first since they’re a setting-specific race
I would ask this in #character-discussion for a better answer (and to stick to the channel topic)
oh I'm sorry
will do ty n.n

Hello everyone! I believe this is the chat to introduce that I am here 😅 Been playing dnd for 5 years now, plan on looking for a possible new group however I am a bit nervous in that regard. I have the roleplay itch really bad and my current group sadly isnt as active as we were before due to life being life. Hope everyone is doing good and having a good day/night 🙂
Hello I’ve never played D&D but would love to get into it, can anyone help me out?

Even though there are 3 slots for attacks, can I have more than 3 bc I have spells and weapons I want to add
In D&D you have:
Movement
Action
Bonus Action
Reaction
In your action you may use:
Attack action (which in certain classes means making 1-4 attacks with a weapon),
Cast a Spell, or
Do Some Other Interaction Allowed By the DM/Game Mechanics
But what I mean is can I have more than 3 attacks
Bc I have spells and weapons to add or am I limited to 3
If your class says that you can make more than one attack on your Attack phase of your turn
When you say you have 3 slots, do you mean like spaces on a character sheet?
Oh! Okay that's making more sense - thanks Jayn!
I would send u a Pic but it doesn't let me
The 3 slots just shows, if you will, frequently used choices
It's like the attacks and spellcasting section
And it has 3 lines with name atk onus and damage type
Specifically on the paper section correct?
So I can have more than 3 attacks?
Ah okay Jayn was on the mark. That clarified things immensly.
You can have a big old list of things to pick from to use in your Attack phase of your turn
You can't use them all in the same attack phase though - again you're ususally limited to one melee attack or one spell attack
To provide an example of UndyingNoob's answer, you can take a look at this premade ranger character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/129047206/SjlU8K
Even though it lists a longbow, short sword, and Unarmed Strike as attacks. These are just the different options ranger can use for their 1 attack.
Cantrips are spells that you can cast as many times as you'd like.
While leveled spells can only be cast as long as the spellcaster has spell slots available.
Where r my spell slots
This lists all available spells for a warlock, set the spell level filter to 1st
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/class/7-warlock
Hello
Tysm
Btw what spells you recommend
This might take a while, but could someone help me with identifying the spells that are generally good to have on a documented list?
For a lv1 human warlock
This table shows how many spell slots a warlock has at each level, along with how many spells your character can know: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#QuickBuild11
Can someone provide a good online source to get info on dnd basics
What do you mean "documented list"?

Tysm
Wait so I only have a single spell slot at lv1 @true musk
That's not answering my question. Are you referring to a class' spell list.
To help you out a bit better, check out this handbooker helper video that gives a good overview on building a warlock: https://youtu.be/fPIkwvAiwQ8
Ty
That's a part of it, but I have a seperate list as well
It's complicated to explain-
Again, not answering my question.
Yes.
That's why warlocks in particular rely on cantrip spells to be effective.
I'm sorry, but that's the best I can answer it
It's not a set list that I can describe it as
And when I level up I can swap spells out?
Why is it complicated?
You should be using the spell lists of the class. Don't use homebrew stuff.
Are you after all the dnd spells?
Sorry, but I'm sticking to this one
No, it's been cut down much more than that
This channel is for new players learning the rules of the game. We don't help with homebrew stuff in this channel.
As a new player you shouldn't be using homebrew stuff.

Okay, I'll go ask somewhere else
Not every class has access to the same spells, so there isn't really a tier list of all spells that are good.
How effective spells can be is going to depend on a chosen class and the player's playstyle and strategy.
Thanks for the clarification
I’m confused what exactly do you need
Let's try to get to some specifics like what class are you playing?
We can't help you if the question if vague.
That I'm not sure about, as warlocks are not my strong suit.
Some classes do have a feature where you can swap out certain spells, but a good frame a reference is that if a class has a feature that says you can do something, you can, if it doesn't then you can't.
K tysm
From what I do know, I don't believe warlocks have an ability that lets them swap spells.
Damn
Like I said, my warlock knowledge is limited so you can always ask in #character-discussion to double check.
"...when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots."
Thanks for the assist Smith
Hey everyone, so I’m new to dnd and I would really like to play as a Kenku race character. However the option doesn’t show up for it in the dnd beyond website. Do I absolutely have to buy the thing to unlock it or can I manually put in the stats/characteristics for it?

Need help on how to get spellcasting class, ability, spell save DC, and spell attack bonus
Have you picked a class for your character?
Warlock
Those are all listed in your Pact Magic feature, then.
What is that
In your warlock features is one called Pact Magic.
Excellent choice. This will help: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#Warlock
Thanks also what's the difference between cantrip and regular spells
Cantrips are level 0 and cost 0 spell slots while regular spells range from 1st-9th and require a spell slot of the corrosponding level
Cantrips don't cost a spell slot to use.
You’ll know only a limited number of them.
Oh I gotchu
But you can use the ones you know without limit.
Based off your Charisma mod since you are a warlock
Starting warlock gets two. Typically one is eldritch blast, the best damaging cantrip in the game.
So I can use those 2 thingies and I was told there's a spell slot
You know two first-level spells from the warlock list.
Spell slots are like a pool of resources that you draw from to use your spells
And you can only use spells according to the spell slots you know meaning if you don't have access to 2nd level spell slots, you can't use 2nd level spells
What’s a “paid game”?
Just what it sounds like: you pay to play!
Ohhh
Ty
A game you pay the DM to host. Usually some of that money goes to enhancing the experience with special effects and the like.
Wait where do I go to find the soellcasting ability spell save DC and attack bonus
Dynamic lighting ain't free, yo.
Is there a way to look for a game with a specific download for d&d beyond? Because I really want to play a kenku but I don’t have it myself
There's a feature called Pact Magic that tells you this, but I'll do it for you. Your spell save is 8 + your profiency bonus + plus your charisma modifier
Ty
Your spell casting ability would be Charisma because you are a warlock
Is pact magic a site
Also is there a workaround for d&d beyond to play a race you don’t have? Like putting in the stats yourself
No. It is a Warlock ability that tells you this
Possibly, if the person hosting has a DDB subscription and content sharing enabled.
Look at the last link I sent you, it's there.
1st level
And only one spell slot
How do I submit a post on #looking-for-dm I can’t figure it out for the life of me 💀
The instructions are posted in #find-a-game
It gives me like 20 lv1 spells and apparently I should only know 2
You pick 2 you like the look of
The table that I link tells you how many spells slots you have at each level.
Ik I have 1 spell slot but apparently I have an option to pick out of 2 but there's lime 20
Do u recommend any?
Hex and either Armor of Agathys or Arms of Hadar
To clarify some things, spells slots represents how many times you can cast a spell of that level. It does not determine how many spells your character knows.
For example a character can have two spell slots but know 4 different spells.
So I can only use hex once a battle
Once a short rest
Spellcasting Ability
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your warlock spells, so you use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a warlock spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier
Thanks
Huh
I do recommend taking time reading the Warlock section of the free basic rules first.
You also have the option of choosing a pre-built character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Short rest
How long is that
Have you looked at the basic rules?
They're handy and can be a good reference when building a character for the first time.
For example here are two different level 1 warlocks
Human Warlock: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/107693030
Tiefling Warlock: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/95613928
One hour. You can find the rules for resting here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#Resting
Usually a short rest takes place between an hour or two. Long rests can be up to 8-12 hours depending on how long your party wishes to rest
No
A short rest is at least one hour long, and a long rest is at least eight hours.
A long rest cannot be completed in six hours.
And I saw on the example character from zeros link, he had 2 level 1 spells on his thing when he was level 1
My bad
What's abt that bc can't u only have 1 spell slot
A spell slot tracks how many times you can cast your spells.
But you can use it for any of the spells you have available to cast.
Characters generally have more spells than spell slots.
Which means you have to choose what to cast and when.
Oh that actually clears up the rest of my question's
Thanks to everyone that helped btw
Of note though. While you can upcast a spell, you cannot downcast. So a level 1 spell can be cast at level 2 but a level 2 spell cannot be cast with a level 1 slot
What’s the difference between upcast and downcast?
The second half of what I said
If you have no level 1 spell slots left, but have a level 2 spell slot, you can use the level 2 slot for the level 1 spell.
Spells often have increased effects for being upcast (it will say in thr spell description if it does more when cast at a higher level)
Oh i see. So if I was level 1 tryna use a level 2 it’s called an upcast
Not you, the character, your spells. Spells have levels. Cantrip (level 0) then spells leveling from 1 to 9
Upcasting comes at later levels
You cannot upcast cantrip btw
Any time you cast a spell with a spell slot, you need a spell slot of at least the spell’s level. Fireball, for example, is a 3rd-level spell so it needs at least a 3rd-level spell slot.
Oh I see. What’s “cantrip”. Sorry for all the questions I’m new 😂
Some spells give added effects if you do use a higher level spell slot. Fireball, for example, does more damage at higher levels.
It is the most basic spell a caster can use, and does not require a spell slot to cast meaning you can use it as much as you want
Gotcha
I'll just post my message and remove informations regarding it and orient my players towards another website
Hi hello, I'm new to Dnd, i've never played before and i would like to learn and play!
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some helpful info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
do you organize online games?
Hello ! I'll be running a campaign soon with my brothers, whom are completely new to DnD. Today I've shown a character builder, so they could start to look at things and make their characters. I've also thought them where to look but stuff if they need details, then I'll guide them on the importation of their characters in Foundry. Would you guys have any other things to add that you could say to new players in order to guide them on the right path ? (Sorry my english isn't the best). If you also have websites you could guide me to other than D&D Beyond, if there are any, that would be appreciated 😄
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
great thanks
If you're using Foundry already, they do have built-in character sheets.
https://foundryvtt.com/packages/dnd5e
Yeah, I've shown them how that looks as well. Basically my goal here is that they can pick whatever they want, and I'll buy single classes, etc to match what they want
hello I am new to D and D I have played one or two games in the past but I don't really know any of the rules or anything like that

Can someone help me find what AC I have for my character
What's your armour
Leather
So it's 11 plus your dex
What abt the light medium and heavy armor stuff I read in the rulebook
And common clothes
Things that contribute to your AC include the armor you wear, the shield you carry, and your Dexterity modifier.
Not all characters wear armor or carry shields, however.
Without armor or a shield, your character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier
- Basic rules, chapter 1, armor class https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
Common clothes would still be 10+dex but each armour has their own modifier and others have flat armour. Such as Chain Mail which is just 16 on the dot with no added modifier
So if I buy stuff with gp it'd tell me what to add to the AC
yeah
K ty
Yes but if you wear heavy armour and don’t have proficiency in it you can’t cast spells
That is true so buy leather
They get it in starting equipment as a warlock
I think they're buying equipment

thats a lot
that's true.. but just goes to show that if you want to find a game of D&D, you have a lot of options. There are very few excuses not to be able to get started, especially online. 🙂
Anyone able to teach me how to play dnd I know some of the basics but barely anything
I would recommend asking to find a game and that would be good. Sadly I can't teach everything through text and I would love that. But please go and find a DM and join a game. Experience is the best learner

The eld has a trait called cantrip which says I know a cantrip if my choice
Does that mean I get 3 cantrip as a level 1 bc of the ability
If you’re getting two from your class, then yes.
Ik warlock gets 2 but does a sorcerer?
Are you making a warlock or a sorcerer?
I was making a warlock earlier today and I finished it bc I remember talking to you
But now I'm js making one for my buddy bc he's lost
Specifically the high elf trait Cantrip gives you one cantrip of your choice from the wizard spell list. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it.
So that is in addition to the cantrips get from anything else.
New to this server and DnD. I have close to 800 hours on BG3. How easy would it be to transition into playing official DnD campaigns?
If a class provides 2 cantrips then yes. You start with 3.
2 from your class and 1 from the high elf feature.
Though for warlock and Sorcerers specifically, you would use your charisma as the spellcasting ability for warlock and sorcerer spells.

How can I tell what classes give 2 cantrips
The bot post above can help go from BG3 to 5e.
It will tell you in the class features.
Each class has a table that summarizes what you get at each level.
Now that is helpful. Thank you very much.
@true musk sorry for the bother hut do you have the link for the sorcerer table
It’s right here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/6-sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
Thanks
They got 4 cantrips for a sorcerer goes crazy and a high elve making it 5
Does anyone have 5 good cantrips bc I know one
#character-discussion can probably recommend a few.
Thanks
Each spell casting class is different and uses a different stat as a spell casting ability modifier.
Then for spell save DC and spell attack bonus is?
Same as Warlock, which is Charisma
Scroll further down from the table and you will see summery of everything called class features: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/6-sorcerer#ClassFeatures
Ty
Those are listed in the sorcerer’s Spellcasting class feature.
(Like the warlock’s was in their Pact Magic feature.)

I'm new to DnD so I have a question. Since they are making a revamped version of the Core Rulebooks for 2024, are the 2014 Core Rulebooks still worth getting?
It depends on the inividual.
The 2024 and 2014 books are both 5e compatible.
While some groups will immediately switch over to the new book, others will stick with the 2014 book for few more years.
I'd say get the older books and use other peoples book for the newer stuff
You can also wait until the new book releases to see which of the two books interest you more.
At the very least by then, you can get the 2014 at a much lower price.
In the meantime you can use the free basic rules.
I am building my first character in DnDBeyond
It is a warlock, but it wont let me choose anything but "the fiend" for my patron.
I wanted archfey. How do I unlock it?
You buy the book it comes from.
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
I am in the third one.
If you're in a campaign then it either means no one in your campaign group owns that content or content sharing is not enabled.
The content was in the player's handbook so content sharing must not be enabled yet.
Hi everyone, I need your help.... I have no books online. When creating a character what subclass are you meant to have? I just created a Ranger and the only option I had for subclass was Hunter! I feel so lost.
The free Basic Rules only include one subclass per class. Any others you’d need access to as Zero described above: #dnd-newcomers message

Hello im new to d&d and i am very confused about wizard spell casting
what part is confusing you?
Okay, so wizards are the only class in the game that have both "known" and prepared spells
They learn spells by copying them to their spellbook
They can do this whenever they level up (2 new spells per level up) or by copying spells from spell scrolls, spellbooks, etc
Their spellbook is their known spells
However, unlike other known-spell casters (like bard), they can't cast freely from their known spells. They must prepare them (like cleric or artificer)
Each day, a wizard can prepare a number of spells from their spellbook to be able to cast that day
So for example
Bard
Bard known spells >>[selected from]>>> Bard spell list >>>[on levelling up]
Cleric
Cleric prepared spells >>[selected from]>>> Cleric spell list >>>[each long rest]
Wizard
Wizard prepared spells >>[selected from]>>> spellbook of learned spells >>>[each long rest, selected from]>>> Wizard spell list >>>[from]>>>> levelling up or finding written spells
Does that make sense?
I'm getting extremely confused by all the rules and gameplay and character building
A little how do you know how many they can prepare a day
It's stated in the class description; intelligence modifier + wizard level
Ok thank you so much
What does saving throw prof. Mean
Saving throw proficiency, meaning if you're proficient in a specific saving throw, you'll add your proficiency bonus to the saving throw
Proficiency bonus is a number you can add to any roll that your proficient in
Rolls at their simplest level consist of three things
- The result of a d20 (twenty sided dice)
- A relevant Ability Modifier (a number that's either + or - and is determined by an ability score)
- Proficiency if you're proficient
So for example, the DM asks you to make a Strength (Athletics) ability check
- You roll a d20 and get a 10
- Your Strength modifier is +3, bringing you to 13
- You are proficient with Athletics and your proficiency bonus is +4, so you add that to the above, giving you a total result of 17
But say the DM asks for a Constitution saving throw, which you're not proficient in
- You roll a 18
- Your constitution bonus is +2, giving you a 20 so far
- You're not proficient in Constitution saving throws, so you don't add your proficiency bonus, giving a total of 20
You can be proficient in such things as:
- Skills (Like Stealth or Insight)
- Weapons
- Tools
- Saving throws
There is also proficiency in things that don't normally involve a roll, such as
- languages
- armor
This just means you can use or do those things effectively, for example understand and use a language, or use armor without penalty
I hope that makes sense?
hey guys i have a couple of questions about the game
do i have to pay for the game. and is there like a beginner friendly group i could play with
its free
and, there is if you can find one
Hey, if my player dies in one adventure in next he can play with full recovered of chances to continue?
He can do whatever you want
new character, same character brought back from the dead, identical sibling of the dead character who is also the same class and subclass
You probably won't be able to import the character with the same equipment or at the same level, though. They can be the same mechanical build and even personality, but whether it can be the same iteration of the character is a question for the DM of the new game you mean to bring that character to.
i know that there are many species already. but is it also ok to make ur own? cause i have way too many in mind
It's okay, but as a newcomer it's not recommended
The key to making balanced homebrew is a familiarity with the game
i see, thanks^^
It’s also something you’d need to discuss with your DM ahead of time.
Alternatively, you might be able to find an existing race and reflavor it — change how it’s described without changing how it works.
The DMG suggests using the mechanics of the halfling race and simply describing it as a mousefolk instead, for example.
Hi is there a wiki i can refer to for posting ad about looking for players?
with how to set up those automatic time adjustment stuff and entering details
Are you referring to a discord wiki for formatting posts?
#find-a-game has information on how to submit a post here.
I'd suggest using Hammertime to generate those timestamps.
You just enter the time you want, then it will give you a few display options you can choose from. You just copy+paste the code for the one(s) you want.
🙏 thank you

hello people! so im really new to dnd, and im looking for some help. What to buy, what to learn, stuff like that. Im trying to be a DM soon enough
Check the links above.
You don't need to buy anything to get into the game. The Basic Rules is free (link above) and it has everything you need to get started, including DMing.

You need the following for D&D:
- The rules, already mentioned
- People to play with
- Dice (which can be digital or physical)
- Character sheets (available here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets)
- If you're the DM, you can run an adventure you made yourself, but free ones are also available.
For some specific single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff. The Green Blight is connected to a very handy how-to-DM guide (https://howtogm.guide/), and The Silvyr Tower is meant to walk the new DM through the process of running the adventure. Peril in Pinebrook simplifies the D&D ruleset, which may make it easier to jump into.
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn
Does that mean I can cast two spells/can trips or swing my sword twice or attack with a weapon and cast a spell?
Not sure how to interpret this line (paladin level 5)
Attack is a separate action from Cast a Spell. You can attack with a weapon twice, not cast a spell twice.
Nor can you use a spell and attack.
Thanks that's clear! Are you able to have a shield AND a two handed weapon equipped at the same time? Like obviously I would have to choose to defend with either the shield or the weapon but if I swing a warhammer for example and then try to shield bash the enemy to stagger them/push them back a bit would that count as 2 attacks or is that outside the rules of combat/DM specific question
You can hold a two-handed weapon in one hand but you can't wield the weapon if you're wielding a shield already.
A shield takes up a free hand, and putting it on or removing it requires an Action. You can hold a two-handed weapon with one hand, but it would otherwise be useless if the other is occupied with the shield, as OldMan says.
It’s also worth noting that a “shield bash” is something that you need a specific feat to be able to do. It’s not part of your base abilities
You can make an improvised weapon attack with your shield if you want, but that would be weaker than attacking with a weapon and has no special added effects. You would need the Shield Master feat to actually do that in a meaningful way
Ah ok regardless of shield size then? I guess that might enter fluff/DMs campaign specifics. But I'd think there's a difference between a tower shield (like the romans) and a small shield like the English knights. Would welding the warhammer/spear/glaive 1 handed just cause me to roll a different damage dice or something?
Otherwise it seems like the shield is potentially just a trophy to boost my armour.
Shields don't have sizes in 5e.
Oh interesting. I'm super new to DnD so I haven't gotten this far yet. I just assumed hitting someone was in the base wheelhouse of a shield
You'd need the Shield Master feat for that.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/43-shield-master
In 5e, there is only one type of shield. You can flavor your shield to look however you like, but the effect will always be the same. It gives you +2 AC and nothing more (unless it is a magic item).
Of course, any time you shove someone, you could simply describe it as being done with your shield.
So if I engage in combat with a 2 handed weapon I drop my shield and lose the armour bonus? Or can it be applied to my back or something else?
I don't understand the mechanics of it
You must be wielding a shield to get the AC bonus.
It takes an action to equip or remove a shield.
Anywhere but your hand doesn't count.
And since a shield occupies your hand, you can't use that hand for anything else while equipped.
Which means you can't use both a shield and a two-handed weapon.
It also seems like you haven't gotten to the chapter on weapon properties yet. Most weapons require only 1 hand to wield. If they do not have any special properties, this is the base assumption. Some weapons have the Two Handed property, which means you cannot make an attack with them unless you use 2 hands. Some other weapons have the versatile property, which means that you can choose to use 1 hand or 2, and it will do different damage based on how many hands you use.
Perhaps by coincidence, the 3 weapons you listed are each a different type. Spears are one handed, Warhammers are versatile, and Glaives are two handed
Cuz that's what I was using when buying the stuff
Yeah I'm at mounts right now in the 2014 rules
Thanks for the insight on the weapon spread
Warhammers are vesatile, meaning they can be wielded one-handed (1d8 for damage) or two-handed (1d10). But if you have a shield equipped, you can only use it one-handed.
I think I need to adjust my character then since I do want to use a shield but I took the 2 handed perk
Do you mean fighting style?
Yes
If you plan to use a shield, then your best choice for fighting style is either defense or dueling, depending on if you care about offence or defense
Good call dueling basically negates the two handed nerf
That is set in stone right? Can't change your fighting style without fluff/gold/training
One of the quirks of 5e’s rules is that the game makes it very difficult for you to switch what weapons and other equipment you are using in the middle of combat. You generally need to pick one playstyle and stick with it. Certain things can change outside of combat, though it sometimes requires using optional rules. But putting away a shield in combat is extremely punishing because of how much of your turn it wastes, and even just switching between melee and ranged can have complications
Yeah, it's a permanent choice.
Do I need to do an action to put down my weapon and shield to cast a spell and then a third action to pick them back up again or can I channel some of my magic through the weapons?
I know some spells require physical actions but I would assume there's some reasonable room for interpretation based on the DM
That depends on several factors, such as what class you are playing and what spell you are casting.
The full rules for spellcasting with weapons is a bit complicated, but generally a shield is going to put a heavy limit on what you can cast
Like burning hands would require both hands but hellish rebuke or chill touch or mage hand don't seem to require Naruto-level hand signs
If a spell has somatic components you just need 1 hand free. I believe two handed weapons just need both hands to ATTACK not to hold
So you could cast burning hands by taking 1 hand off a greatsword.
...
You guys just gave me a bit of a idea
What about a mage knight?
Yeah the shield is vague but I was hoping that it is half strapped to the arm and has a grip.
That's what I'm doing now haha
Alr,then mind if I give a idea?
Shields take a full action to don or doff (remove)
So, there is actually no guess work involved in figuring out what hands are required. You do not go based off the spell description. Each spell has a list of components that are required to cast that spell, which will be some combination of Verbal, Somatic, and Material. What you are required to hold or not allowed to hold is based off the components of the spell, not the spell description.
Go ahead!
Knight, using a greatsword and a rather large shield
Using a spell to be able to swing the sword foreward, with just pure magic,a bit like telekinesis in a way,do it would swing with the Intelligence or maybe wisdom, idk?
Of course,it's like, max maybe 3/4 tiles, but it's like, semi range option in case you want to do something like that?
Greatswords take two hands to swing, a shield requires 1 hand to wield
You could def still flavor a grearsword as a big sword
Hey,if you are strong enough, you could weild both...?
Nope.
Maybe,idk
Unfortunately there currently aren't any methods to do what you're suggesting, RAW. There are several ways to create magical energy weapons that you can attack with, but we're getting a bit far away from what might be considered newcomer friendly topics.
Alr,fair enough
But its still a good idea, right?
Maybe just classic sword/shield or just greatsword
Oh so any spell that has somatic requires both hands to cast? DnD beyond descriptions are vague. Is the 2014 rule book more specific? I can look there if so
It's a good idea, but it isn't doable using the mechanics of the game.
I guess homebrewing can help with the idea?
Sure, there's plenty of opportunity for that. I'd check in #homebrew if you're hoping to hammer out the details more.
Keep in mind that homebrew is dependent on DM approval for it to be used in a campaign.
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
homebrew is any fan created content
Is it like, you create something new that the game doesn't offer?
If you play a lot of video games, you can think of it like a mod
Does not require both hands. Just 1. The rulebook spellcasting section has more details
It also requires a good understanding of the rules and mechanics of the game.
Think of it like building a part to add to an engine. It can sometimes break something if you don’t how it will work with the other moving parts.
There are no spells that require 2 hands to cast. If a spell has a material component, then that spell requires you to use 1 hand to hold a spellcasting focus or that material. If a spell also has a somatic component, you can use the hand that is holding the focus or material to perform the somatic movements. If a spell has a somatic component and does not have a material component, then you must have an empty hand to perform the somatic movements
So for example, if you have a sword and a shield, you cannot cast the shield spell, since that spell has Verbal and Somatic components, but no material ones
So,understand how the game works, make something can the game COULD incorporate that isn't from it?
Like,traits,buffs,debuffs?
So it takes 3 actions to put a warhammer down long enough to cast spell requiring a component and then pick it up again? 🤔
No. Weapons and shields are different
dropping a weapon from your hand can be done for free. No action required. Pulling a spellcasting material from your bag is an "object interaction" (fan term) which you can do once per turn. So, you can cast that spell by dropping your weapon onto the ground. But you won't be able to pick it back up until the start of your next turn
Oh yeah that makes sense. But can I pick it up and attack or is it just a whole turn picking it up?
More typically, homebrew will be something wholly new, which fills the role of other game content. Such as homebrew magic items, subclasses, monsters, etc.
you is there like super beginners like me, it would be kinda interesting to get in a voice chat and learn the game together. who is in
Picking it up would be an object interaction, which can be done for free
so you can pick it up and attack in the same turn
Such nuance to the game. Ok thanks! Having a session 1 this week with some minor combat so I figured I'd as first!
What if you have a weapon that cannot be like, fully dropped?
Like,if you tied a rope to a dagger,and you drop it,you can just...pick it back up,right?
Talk to your DM because that's homebrew territory.
...about that-
There’s not really a “half-wielded” state. You either have the weapon in your hand or you don’t.
Well, its still tied to a rope, tied somewhere on you,so...maybe getting dragged, but you have to pick it up?
That's not something in the base game so you have to talk to your DM about homebrewing that.
That would be up to your dm
I mean,yeah
That might work for sheathing a weapon
If the dm allows it,its good
As a flavor thing
Oh,hold on,let me demonstrate
Welcome! We don’t have voice channels in this server, but if you wanted to get started check out this channel’s pins or #learn-to-play , both of which have links to the free basic rules!
A rogue tied a rope around his right arm,and tied the other end with his dagger,he throws it,technically, its still going to be dragged around,he just needs to pick it back up,you know?
Again, transferring flavor into mechanics is homebrew
Huh
Oh well, really though that someone would have thought of that one,ngl
You're not the first person to come up with this idea. Its been discussed in this server before. Ultimately, this starts to get into issues about the spirit of the game, because you're exploiting things outside the game rules to try to gain a mechanical advantage. As others have said, this is something you'd need to discuss with your DM, because its not covered by the rules, and could seem a bit cheap or exploitive if you attempt it without saying anything first
I hate that all my cool ideas are homebrew-
It’s not codified into the rules because that’s one of infinitely many possibilities someone could come up with, which is why such decisions are relegated to the DM
OH!
so if its not in the rules,it's homebrew, and so,I should ask the dm?
At the very least, anything not in the rules is subject to DM ruling, so yes, do talk with them. Communication is literally essential to the game.
D&D is a game with a large amount of rules and a specific list of powers and abilities you can choose from. Coming up with something out of your own ideas is the definition of homebrew

If I buy a physical copy of the PHB can I access the DnD beyond content too by typing in a code or something?
I like physical books but I see the merit of the app
The only way to access both is to specifically purchase a digital and physical bundle. Buying the physical book on its own does not grant you a digital copy
Can someone help me to learn how to make a actual character for dnd 5e?
Or like, give me a site that explains it all?

Darn, ok thanks dude. I'll probably just try to get a cheap second hand copy and a digital copy then
If its an ability check do you use saving throws
Or is that only for saving throws
Bc I've js learned the different spins for d20 die
Ability checks and saving throw are two completely different rolls
I'm sure what you mean by "spins" though
Not spins that's mb it autocorrected I meant different types of rolls
If i want to make a warlock whose patron is a mythological god, how do i put that on a character sheet ?
You would put it alongside all the other description information, such as backstory and appearance
You don't even have to put it on the sheet, a lot of people use character sheets just for mechanical information and track their characters personality and deeds and all that stuff in a separate notebook or whatever
Oh ok thanks
So I'm confused about Guidance, there seems to be a lot of back and forth about if it can be used reactively vs proactively. Has this be clarified or is it just something a DM has to decide. I'm only just getting into actual DnD, so I only have BG3 to go off of.
In the official rules, it takes an action to cast. It can't be cast as a reaction.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2132-guidance
So you would need to cast it before the other person makes their ability check.
(You can't cast it during.)
Ok, ty. That's the way I read it also, I just figured maybe I was misunderstanding something or there was some kind of interaction I was missing.

how does elven accuracy work? wit hexblade
For hexblade warlocks, it can increase their charisma score and can allow you to reroll your attacks whenever you have advantage.
So it's 3 chances of success instead of the 2 granted by advantage.
does it make me have advantage all the time?
i’m making a melee hexblade warlock
or attack advantage all the time* i mean
No, you need to get advantage first in order to gain the benefits of the reroll.
so how does gaining an advantage work? sorry if it’s a lot of questions
You usually gain advantage or disadvantage through the use of special abilities, actions, or spells. Inspiration can also give a character advantage. The DM can also decide that circumstances influence a roll in one direction or the other and grant advantage or impose disadvantage as a result.

Hello
#character-discussion and #optimization will provide you with answers
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Hello! I am somewhat new to dnd and I have no clue how to find games. I have played some homebrew and official with a friend but he pretty much flakes after the first or second session. Any advice for finding games?
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.

How do hit die work
You have a number of them equal to your level and you can roll them to recover HP during a short rest. You add your CON modifier to each roll
That's for DMs to know, not the players.
K
Also how do I use the atk bonus
Yes ik it's a dumb question
Bc there's damagetype and it has a bonus
So what does the atk bonus do
Ay there lads, so, I'm wondering, Is it require to read the player handbook or can I watch a youtube video about the rules, or can I just figure out the rules from the DM?
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.

Hey guys, I don't know if this is the right channel but I figured I may as well ask the questions on my mind. Where's the best place to start when it comes to getting into DND? I've wanted to try DND for a while and I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I've got some dice and the player's handbook, I just don't know where I should start

Are you talking about in a DMing context or as a player?
DMing
#dm-discussion would be the place to ask
I think the answer depends on how you're intending to play. Are you the DM or just a player? Are you hoping to play online or in person?
The parts to D&D are, in essence:
- Know the rules.
- Know how to make a character. In a way, this is more for players than the DM, but building a character incorporates so many rules that it's a worthwhile exercise for the DM too.
- If you're the DM, you'll need an adventure. You can make your own or just use an existing one. Free adventures are plentiful.
- Find a group and decide who will DM. This can be a rotating role!
- Then play.
All of those are easier said than done. If you have friends who are interested, then you could all begin playing and learn the rules as you go. (There are multiple avenues to learning: videos, reading, joining learn-to-play sessions, watching sessions on YouTube/Twitch, and/or any combo of the above.) If you're a player hoping to join an online game, you'll likely be best served by learning the rules at least in general before trying to join a group.
Hopefully that makes sense!
I do eventually want to try and dm but for now, I would just like to learn to play the game. I've taken a few pieces of previous advice, such as reading the free basic rules, a reference sheet for the basics of play, and even trying out a tutorial game on DND beyond. I think I have a basic understanding of the rules now
Sounds like you're in a good place, then. The next step would be to find a group, and the info for using those channels on the server is in #find-a-game.
An important caveat: most folks don't learn the game 100%. Mistakes will happen and that's okay. Getting the rules perfectly right doesn't necessarily make for a good game. So long as everyone's having fun (including the DM) then you're playing well.
Alright, thanks for all the help. One last question. Should I find a group before creating a character?
My advice is to go through the process of creating a character so you're at least somewhat familiar with it. Have several concepts in mind, but don't create them until you find a game. Your character should fit the world, tone, and group dynamic at the table. Making the character ahead of time means you're shooting in the dark.
Alright, thank you again, will do
If you want to play at your own pace, you can start with play in D&D’s Adventurers League.

Folks here are happy to answer anything you want to know!

Hey could anyone give me tips on being a dm? I’m preparing to run my first campaign as a dm with my friends but I’m not 100% sure on what I should learn or read into before I run my first campaign. So any tips are greatly appreciated!

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
No tag dmtips found.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The two bot posts above should be a good place to start.

...I have no idea of what is my timezone to be looking for a game
I think you could just google your country/regions timezone?
(GMT+2) i got that thing that I don't understand
Hello, can someone provide some tips to improve my character sheet
Well as in abilities, backstory
Well,its rather simple
Think of it like,if you did that, what would you get from it?
Like,example
I made a "boxer" background
It gives unarmed strike Proficiency?
Mostly brave,only fights when necessary/Survival
Proficiency?
Thank you
I gave myself a sage background.. while being a barbarian
Idk why
Idk how it's going to help
Hm...
I thought it was appropriate with the backstory
Hold on,let me just...like,open up roll 20 to see how it looks...alr?
So,barbarian?
Yup
Race?
Red
Uh...give me a sec,alr?
Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, History
You have those
2 language of your choice
Equipment: A bottle of black ink, a quill, a small knife, a letter from a dead colleague posing a question you have not yet been able to answer, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp
You don’t need to paste all that here
That's not me
But that's not my character
What
Wait, you are making a character for someone else?
No- idk what letter you're talking about about, what colleague
Oh,that?
It can be anything, think of it like a goal letter, you know?
Like, maybe you have a master, and he gave you a enigma, and you don't know what it is,and so,you go on a adventure to find what it says
Maybe a request?
Hi reaper
Uh...go in looking for players
Do you have a character yet?
Reaper?
Hi I’m new to dnd
I’m looking for my first game
Not yet
question: Hi i am new to DnD but don't have experience. So i have a few questions like can we make characteers with-i only saw this now- homebrew abilities?
Hi welcome, yes you can use homebrew but not recommended for new people, learn the game before you break it with mods

The sage background grants the additional equipment listed by rinny, one of which is a letter from a dead colleague.
You’re of course, free to customize your background and take another background’s equipment set, swap out the letter for something else flavorful, or remove it entirely (just clear it with your DM)
Welcome! There’s a lot of people joining every day and the rules of 5e are very long so it’s fairly impractical to teach 1 on 1 (or 1 on group) unfortunately. I’d start by reading the free basic rules found in this channels pins as well as #learn-to-play !
Don’t feel pressured to memorize every rule, just familiarize yourself through chapter 4
Heck, pick a race and class, check out the section on using ability scores and start walking though character creation. Make something for practice.
Alright , thanks . İ have one more question , is D&D free to play online ?
Awesome ! İ will read the basic things right now . And how does the communication work ? Do we speak or message or both of them . Because i cant speak english (im shy).
Text based games are available.
A majority of online games require voice, but a subset of games are text-based. These are known as “Play-By-Post” or “PBP” for short
PBPs are also usually asynchronous, with players & DM writing in their posts as they have the time instead of on a consistent schedule

Thank you for your advice. I have checked my local gamestore as it has it's own discord. Maybe I can try my library as they do promote DnD for kids. Right now I'm just putting posts anywhere I can think of to find a group.
You can also start with Adventurer’s League, this server has several channels dedicated to it.
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 recently listed game sessions for the entire month of August
The best how-to-DM resources I know of for getting started are this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). You don't need to watch all of the videos; the first handful should be enough.
These are my tips, which focus on being someone welcome at the table rather than being mechanically effective or anything like that.
- Don't hog the spotlight. Give your fellow players time to shine. Involve them directly if you think they'd be open to it.
- Take an interest in other people's stories and choices; don't tune out when the session focuses on someone else (in combat or not).
- Know how your abilities/features work. On a similar note, don't take forever on your turn.
- Take NOTES.
- Listen to everyone else and try not to interrupt.
- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way.
- Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else's.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that everyone has a good time.
Hello there, im new in dnd and want to play with some friends but dont know what i need to make a campain in dnd, also i have been asign to be GM, hope someone respond, thx.
I recommend using a prewritten adventure like the one found in the Starter Set.
How do they manage playing in dimension 20
It feels like the players had never played before yet their characters were good and had cue cards for spells and instructions
What's "Dungeon 20"? Are you referring to Dimension 20?
Do you mean dimension 20? They presumably had practice beforehand about how the rules went with 1:1 supervision, and likely had individual character sheets prepared with easy to use resources. They're able to do this because they play DnD as their job, and have access to the funds to get all this set up for them
Pro-tip: never compare yourself or your table to any streamed "actual play".
Oop yeah
Anyway, if you want talk about streamed games that's more for #dnd-discussion than here. This channel is to help new players learn the game.
It looks epic honestly, I'm hooked
Thk, gona check it, any recommendation?
The current Starter Set is Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, which is supposed to do a good job leading the new DM (and players) through it. Dragon of Icespire Peak or Lost Mine of Phandelver are also viable, but they aren't as newb-friendly in their design in some ways (IMO).
Also these groups tend to focus a lot of their attention on entertaining their audience so... yeah...
How long does stormwreck isle last?
Maybe four to five sessions.
Me and my 3 friends are working on setting up our first compain we have picked a dm and they are working on the plot I’m currently working on getting links for the party and the dm so we can try and figure out everything does anyone have some advice for us/our situation?
Thk everyone for help, gona read it right now
Can you clarify what you're asking?
What exactly do you need help with? It sounds like everything is on the right track!
Like general advice for starting a campaign
The DM is the one who prepares the adventure. You the players don't really have a hand in that other than creating characters.
This ddb forum post is decent
As I mentioned earlier above, I highly recommend new DMs use a prewritten adventure than trying to create one from scratch.
A session zero is a good idea for getting everyone on the same page. https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game
I'd say that's a good starting place for the table, allowing folks to talk about what they want as players and as their characters.
Thank yall I will share this with my party

Zero's message just above yours has a good roadmap of the server: #dnd-newcomers message
I have a question about the find-a-game. After we fill out the information, where does it go and who can read it?
It goes to whatever channel you selected. They're all publicly visible.
The newcomer helper already smelled fresh blood and pounced on its pray
Not sure if you mean me or Zero, but we do try to help!
So, if I filled out the info in the find-a-game channel, it gets posted there? Because the only messages I saw in there was just the welcome message.
What looking-for channel did you select?
If you use the </looking-for dm:1074431147045568613> command, it will post to the #looking-for-dm channel, where anyone on the server can see it.
The other commands work similarly, each posting to their corresponding channel.
I see, then I messed up, lol. I just tapped #looking-for-dm and filled it out on #find-a-game
It doesn't matter where you fill it out.
The point is that when you're done, the final result will be posted to #looking-for-dm.
No matter which channel you set it up in.

Thanks, spam!
Oh, I got it now. Sorry, I don't often use Discord, either....
When making your character. Is there official character sheets you HAVE to use ? Or does that not matter
You can track your character's information however and wherever you like.
If you did want an official character sheet, though, you can find one here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets
Character sheets are basically just a well organized notes page. As long as you can keep track of your characters stats, abilities, inventory, etc, then you can do so however you like. The official character sheets that exist are basically just suggestions for how to best organize all that information
