It's based on the Ability used.
Strength save uses your Strength modifier.
So with a Dexterity of 10, my acrobatics be 4?
Skills that use strength will use your strength modifier, so on.
if You're proficient in a skill or save, you also add your prof bonus.
10 is +0.
If Proficient in Acrobatics, thats +2 to the roll (At lower levels, your prof bonus will increase)
So it's not +4 for my acrobatics then?
If your dexterity is 10 then your acrobatics is either +0 if you are not proficient or +2 if you are
Amd no, I'm proficient in survival amd athletics due to my outlander background and stealth in my race
and what about from your class?
Right cause minus 10 damm, bad math fart. Class is going to be paladin with oath of the ancient on a wood elf
Ok, so Paladin gives 2 more skill proficiencies. You should have a total of 5
proficiency in 5 skills
2 from your class
2 from your background
1 from your race
Okey so plus one for stealth modification and two in the other
stealth would not be +1
Stealth is my wood elf proficiency
stealth is also a dex based skill, so it is calculated the same way acrobatics is. If your dex is 10, and you are proficient in it, then it would be +2
But that's not due to class OR background, like you said, 1 from your race
Or did you mean I get to pick one due to race?
The latter
That is what I meant
Though you don't pick. Wood Elf gives you a specific one, iirc
If you are proficient in something, you add your proficiency bonus. That bonus does not change depending on the skill or source of the proficiency. It will always be +2 until you reach level 5
What are all the proficiency bonus worth each?
I think I also messed up on my cleric, I have 4 proficiency bonuses
not every race gives you a skill proficiency
Your proficiency bonus is a static number that is added to all your proficient ability checks and saves. You only have one proficiency bonus, and it's a +2 at level one. You add that +2 to everything you're proficient in.
Human cleric, life domain, acolyte. But getting back on track, I still have no clue what I'm giving my paladin modification skills and saving throw, along with his armor class
The odd numbers are giving me the most trouble
You know what your ability modifiers are
You know what skills and saving throws you are proficient in
Check the list of skills, and what ability scores the correspond to: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills
Your bonus to each skill is the ability modifier for the ability score that corresponds to that skill, plus your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in that skill.
How do I figure our saving throw modifiers?
The same way
It is the corresponding ability score modifier, plus your PB if you are proficient in that saving throw
Most of my numbers are freaking odds before the ÷2 part
Why are you dividing at all?
-10 ÷2
That's so confusing. Don't do it that way
Just hopped on, what are you trying to build?
It's the only way I currently know
Trying to add modifications to my characters skills and saving throw
Armor tells you how to calculate AC, or gives you a flat AC (heavy armor). Hide armor is medium, and is 12+dex modifier, which for you is 0, giving an AC of 12 https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#MediumArmor
You've been linked to a table where you can look up your modifier
This chart shows you what modifier to use for each ability score number:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Ya....that tells me how to do it FOR strenght intelligence and the other 4 but not for skills
You don't calculate it for skills
I need to add their bonuses
Your modifier for your intelligence is your modifer for all intelligence skills. They are exactly the same
You add that to the modifier
Your saying their skills, are just what the modifications from the main 6 are?
once you know your modifiers, that's what you add your proficiency bonus to (if you're proficient in that skill)
correct. Plus your PB if your are proficient in that skill or saving throw
Skills are categories of activities that you can be proficient in, allowing you to use your proficiency bonus
For example, being proficient in Arcane means when you make an Intelligence (Arcana) check you
- roll a d20
- add your intelligence modifier
- add your proficiency bonus
If you're not proficient, you ignore step 3
Was the score that bad?
If you want to share your character sheet with us so we can check it for you either post a link to the sheet directly if it’s online, or upload an image of it to an image hosting site like Imgur and the share the URL for that post here
Three more. What are my hit points suppose to be, what's my passive wisdom suppose to be, and what's my initiative suppose to be? And please I just wanna know how to find out
?tag new hp
Hit Points and Hit Dice
Whenever a creature takes damage, that damage is subtracted from its hit points. Creatures with more hit points are more difficult to kill.
Your hit point maximum is determined by your hit dice, both at 1st level and when you gain a level. Your class and level determine your available hit dice. You can also spend hit dice to recover hit points during a short rest, and recover spent hit dice during a long rest.
When you drop to 0 hit points, you either die outright or fall unconscious. Temporary hit points can provide a buffer against damage to protect your actual hit points.
I don't need to know how it works. I need to know what my hit points are in terms of how much health I have, 7? 10? 15?
You need to know how it works in order to know what the numbers should be
I know how it works, when your health hits zero, your in near death state
Fail death saves and you die
Your hitpoints at level 1 are equal to your Hit Die number, plus your Con Mod
Okey, that's something, what's the hit die? Is that a d10?
Your hit die is determined by what class you are playing
Paladin
A paladin’s is a d10 and a cleric’s is a d8
Your initiative bonus is just your dex bonus
So +0 for your Paladin
And a passive ability score is 10+your modifier for that ability
Thanks colossus
Though “passive” scores are typically only used for skills, not just abilities. So you’d want you passive perception instead of your passive wisdom. It will be the same thing, unless you are proficient in perception
If you'd like a reference here are two:
One is a pre-made dragonborn paladin: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/96083798
Another is a wood elf paladin I made with different stats for comparison: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/127456905
Hello, new player, just got DnD beyond and wanted to know if I can campaign on that platform? Would i be able to join a campaign for newbies?
Welcome.
You can use dnd beyond to create your characters.
The platform also provides a virtual table top, but is currently in alpha and you need a subscription to use it.
D&D beyond is a tool to facilitate D&D games, but it does not “run” the games and you cannot join public games through that platform alone. You will have to search for games on your own, and when you find one, then you can create a character on D&D beyond and use that as your character sheet.
To join a campaign you have to find a group of people to play with.
The website is less of a place to “play” D&D and more of a tool that’s used as a part of the game
To play dnd you have to go through the same process as with any other social event.
This includes finding people, agreeing on a time to meet, and having someone host the event.
Thank you!!!!
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- Provide a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
Is their any campaigns willing to let me join please
I've been struggling to find a campaign to join
Look in #looking-for-players
Thank you I do appreciate
Joining a campaign can take weeks or months, hang in there!
Ok
Zero's post above highlights other avenues to search. If you need still more options, I wrote this Looking for Game/Group guide.
Hey
Welcome
HELLO
How do I like play?
You type the command for the template you want in almost any other channel. Then complete the template.
The only place you can't type commands in in the looking-for channels.
Follow the direction in #find-a-game
You can direct message a poster of a game you're interested in or post in the thread attached to their game posting.

What’s owlbear rodeo?
It's a VTT (virtual tabletop); a way to share maps and tokens as if you were playing around a table together

Is there any race related to polar bears
Thanks!
Reflavored bugbears is what comes to mind
Actually never mind they don’t look like bears
Hello
welcome
Races?No,lineages?Yes,werebear
Werebear is not an official playable option
It is.
Its a lineage
"Were cursed may be transmitted via bites"
Theres a whole dnd shorts video about it,you should check it out
For just reflavoring golith's could work well - they have cold resistance and some strength related features
The official races here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/races) don't mention werebear.
I mentioned that it wasnt a RACE,its a LINEAGE
The official lineages are also mentioned there (see Van Richten's).
Again it is not. As Razorwing said the RAW races & lineages are detailed in the D&DBeyond. You may be confusing lineages for the lycanthropy rules detailed in the Monster Manual on page 207 as well as the excerpts on lycanthropy detailed in each cursed creature’s info. Not only is it pretty negative, but you also lose control of your PC’s occasionally if you resist the curse, more frequently if you embrace it.
Werebears are lawfull good,so it wouldnt be negative, but yeah mb maybe its not in the lineages section
In the future I would stick to citing the books for RAW content and not YouTube Shorts, as more often than not such videos do not stick very closely to RAW or RAI
No no I was talking about the actual youtuber,DND shorts
The guys that makes RAW effective builds
Again, same deal. Lycanthropy is not a lineage RAW. It is a curse that causes a PC to lose control of themselves.
Arguable, but thats the closest thing we have to making a "bear race"
Honestly, @brittle stone ,id look into the Leonin and ask if you can be a bear and use the leonins race abilities to your dm
It’s not arguable, no where in the books is lycanthropy listed as a lineage. If you can cite a book and a page number then sure, you’d be right.
I agree with Atharsea, reflavored goliath, simic hybrid, or shifter would be the closest option to a polar bear race
Leonin has better themed abilities
"roar","claws" and "courage" seem really fitting for a bear
DND Shorts tries to make RAW builds, but he is very prone to mistakes. I can point out 1-2 issues in every video I've ever seen of his
Evening everyone. I have no idea where to start. I built what I think is a cool character on the app. That’s it. I played rift with some buddies back in 03 with very “loose” rulesets since we were all jackasses and no one aside from the DM had played before. I would love to explore this a bit and hopefully have some fun. Any guides out there willing to teach?

Those links above should get you started. If you have specific questions, don't be afraid to ask!
It sounds like it shouldn't matter too much, since you were playing with an extremely loose ruleset to begin with, but just so you are aware, the current version of the game, 5e, was released in 2014, so if the last time you played was 2003, then the rules are going to be quite different from back then
So do games typically happen over discord voice or in the app? im confused?
Playing online could involve a variety of tools. Discord is a popular platform for the voice component, D&D Beyond might be used for character sheets (and dice), and a virtual tabletop like Owlbear Rodeo or Roll20 would handle maps and tokens (and dice).
But the suite of tools any group uses is gonna vary.
At what level can you start your d n d character
1
Any level, depending on what the DM wants to start at, it depends on the campaign.
Thank you. I just didn't know it kept saying. Like you can either be like 3 to 1 or something.
What is ‘it’?
I kept checking Google and just couldn't get any information.
Ah, no it’s what the DM is setting the stage for, including levels. Some like higher Tier games and start at lvl 15, some like it from the ground up and start at lvl 1

When playing for the first time, it is recommended you play adventures for level 1 characters.
As character levels up, they unlock more abilities. Which means more things to keep track of.
If a newcomer starts at higher levels, it can make things overwhelming though this will vary from person to person.
This is what I mean. No one can come up with a straight forward answer. It's always something different.
Because there isn't a single answer
Unless you're playing AL, in which case the answer is that you can build a new character for levels 1 or 5 and there are no other options (we aren't counting any loopholes that may or may not exist)
Ok
We should really like link a video of "what is dnd" in the tooltip that the bot sends
yknow,to explain that it isnt just "make believe" and that each dm runs a different table and such
My recommendation start at level 1.
Nowadays a lot of adventures use milestone and a character can go from level 1 to 3 in about 2-5 sessions.
If you're able to keep track of the new abilities, great.
If not, then you can ask for level ups to be done more sparringly.
I can understand the sentiment. It's why I've been linking the video from one shot questers.
Are games typically ran by voice or ran by apps? I drive semi's. So for 11 hours a day I am staring through a windshield. I would love an all voice group to run with for that. not necessarilly for the full 11 hours but maybe a window of time each day
Just voice isn't that common, I think. Mostly because you need a way to roll dice, even if you're playing theater of the mind
When playing online you usually use voice and an app of some kind. Usually a way to speak like Discord, and a way to roll dice/move miniatures like Roll20
But if you find a TotM group who doesn't mind you rolling real dice, I suppose you could roll them in the cab
So the DM can't roll dice for the players?
It's not the usual method. It'd have to be something you work out with your group
I’m sure I have unique circumstances. If it’s going to be an issue I’ll just go back to playing private server ffxi. Im not overly hung up on all this. I just thought it would be cool since the last time I did this was on a rooftop in Iraq with some old army buddies of mine in 2003. It sounds like this might be a bit more involved and less casual than I expected. I appreciate everyone’s time and experience. I’ll lurk around and see if I can’t find a DM that fits my situation and continue to do more research on my own.
Rather than roll for the players, 5e has a system called Passive Checks. Essentially, if you want to know if a player knows or sees something, without letting on that there is something to know or see, you just take their modifier and add 10 to it. This gives you the average result of their ability check, and tells you if they would ordinarily know or see something
I clearly misunderstood the context of this discussion, sorry
Honestly, there may be one out there who's willing to help make it work
Just could take a bit of searching
Indeed. Like I said. I’m not trying to force my situation onto anyone. What I played before was an extremely casual version of what you guys are doing. I’m ok waiting for the right thing to come along.
I did have a blast coming up with a monk character of the fire genasi lineage. I had planned to eventually level leathercraft and smithing to make gloves that’s fired bullets whenever I activated burning hands. It’s a monk character so I hoped I could activate it mid punch on strong enemies. I thought it would be a super cool punch or use it while shadow boxing during a warm up to sneakily ranged attack before a brawl started. I got a little carried away. Lmao.
I’d recommend reaching out to other truckers. You’re not the first one I’ve met that has been interested in the hobby. It’s possible that such a group can find a way to make playing the game feasible.
I am fairly new to DND, only been interested in it for about a year and a half, I (fortunately/unfortunately... however you wanna put it) became my groups forever DM when i first got interested. About a few months ago I have been given a real chance to be a player with a separate group. Only problem is I really struggle trying to get into roleplay or really being an active/impactful player in the campaign. Does anyone have any advice for someone who is really trying hard to make a difference in the party or someone who struggles with "getting into character"?
You can make role playing easier to get into by making mindful choices when creating your character and by creating characters goals, emphasis on the plural, that makes the character a proactive character in the campaign.
Check out these two videos by Ginny Di.
This video goes over her recreating one of her old characters using the insights she’s gained over the years as a player and a DM: https://youtu.be/QnFStvEOVcA?si=UNsafyfJdkWjWIhM
The second video highlights guidelines for character goals to promote proactive role playing: https://youtu.be/DXUnEk4cuYI?si=W-EDa2DqNmQRr4rG
I really appreciate that, I'll check these out.
You might find this D&D Beyond article handy: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1463-how-to-get-better-at-roleplaying-in-d-d
Ginny Di is great for roleplay advice.
Genuine question: What do you struggle with? If you've been the group's DM for a while, you've been roleplaying a ton already.
Ngl a "roadtrip" game between truckers seem sick af
I'm really good at roleplaying other characters at a basic level, i can create you know, age, close relatives, accents, short backstories and all that on the fly, but when it comes to a singular character i really have a hard time with the identity of the character, and so popping into that rp is super tough for me.
A few ideas in the hope that one of them will work for you:
- Know your character really well. To do that, fill out a questionnaire as that character (Ginny Di has one, but it could be any questionnaire). Write a diary entry in their voice, from their perspective. Mentally interview them and record their answers somehow (audio, pen and paper, digitally). While the stuff that happens in game can help you discover the character, some people work well with a baseline. Using other tools to know them can help. Personality, ideals, bonds, and flaws can also prove useful (see: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#PersonalCharacteristics). You can roll on tables for these or just generate them yourself.
- Base your character on someone you know well, fictional or not. A lot of folks play themselves but with elf ears. This is genuinely fine. Once you build up your roleplaying muscle, you may find yourself wanting to break away from that. Cool. Do it! But don't chide yourself if that never happens. Roleplaying as yourself makes sense because you know what kind of choices you'd make in a given situation. So take one step away: who else do you know well? What other fictitious character has a strong personality you can slip into? Someone with a very clear personality gimmick or trait can be easier than worrying about nuance. That can be for later!
- Practice. This can (and maybe should?) be outside of the game. Imagine your character in a variety of scenarios. How would they act? Why? There are no wrong answers here. It's just to get you thinking. If you can identify any patterns ("My character tends to..."), then you can use that as a basis for acting when playing. Similarly, if you know their motive(s), that can also help guide decisions during the game.
I'm nearing the character limit, but I hope that's somewhat helpful!
Wow! This is a lot of good info. I'll make sure I give these a try. I'll definitely do the questionnaire, and I'll try out the different scenarios to get to know the character better.
Thank you so much!
My pleasure. Remember it's a game and the purpose is fun. If the roleplaying is in service of that, great! But if it's stressing you out because you're worried it's not good, try to take a step back and remember why we play. There are no points or awards for roleplaying well (which is a slippery concept anyway!).
Points as in a scoreboard, not inspiration points, in case someone wanted to be funny.
The problem with my group is that my DM awards XP for roleplaying, so I am missing out on crucial XP and others level further than I do because of me not doing as well
What does roleplaying mean to your DM? That's an important question to clarify with them.
Which I partially think its why i get stressed out and worried about not being good at it
Hmmm, well he usually awards folks with the XP if they use the characters accent often, if they speak amongst the group instead of just npcs, and sometimes if they "do something their character would do"
Matt Colville has an epic video on roleplaying you may find interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YCVHnItKuY
In it, he says (rightly, I think) that good roleplaying is not doing a voice. It's making choices your character would make. I would talk this over with your DM. One easy way to engage with your fellow party members? Ask them questions about themselves! Or if you're talking to an NPC in a scene, involve them. "Hey, wizard PC, what do you think about...?"
Understood. I'll try these out too, your insight has rebuilt my confidence, just a smidge!
I personally think good roleplaying is sharing the spotlight, among other things. Seriously, if an element of the game is causing you stress, talk about it with your table. See if there's a way to make it fun for all instead of just some.
I can definitely try, it's very intimidating for me to approach the table about a situation thats bothering me because I'm a newer-to-the-game, younger guy in my 20's and most of the guys at the table are vets and double my age. So a lot of them are very jaded to the idea of altering how they run the game. Don't get me wrong I am not afraid of speaking up because I know nothing gets solved without communication, I just figured I'd give a small glimpse into who's at my groups table.
Fair. If you communicate and nothing gets resolved, you may want to consider if the worry over performing well is worth it. No D&D is better than bad D&D (for varying degrees of bad), and there are enough tables out there that you almost certainly can find one you gel well with!
But you may stick with it; that's cool too. Just worth thinking about, that's all.
What helped me was finding a dnd podcast with active roleplaying, my favorite is dungeon and daddies. Its hilarious
I can appreciate that mindset, I am not one to waste my time on something thats causing incredible amounts of stress, so i definitely resonate with that
I hope it goes better for you!
If they know it's something you are working on perhaps the other players can help involve you in their role playing, and give you cues/openings to jump into a conversation. That paired with knowing how your character would react in specific situations can help.
I'm new, and am playing with a larger group where the sessions are a bit like AL (different party members each time). Players who are more experienced have been good about asking my character questions. Since I have a sliver of an idea about what the next session will be about I also spend time thinking of a few scenarios that might encounter and how my character might handle them. For more general topics I have a google doc and for certain questions I can just search where I've written it down. I also saw something about having your character have a certain mannerism, and it helps having a consistent response - my character is an introvert, and will fidget when in a situation where they meet new people.
how would i make a online charcter form for dnd

Does anyone have any design choices/links for a tabaxi? I am new to D&D and this server and just finished making a character.
Try #character-discussion as that's more focussed on character discussion
Will do. Thanks!

Hey everyone i am new to DND but am very excited to get to learn how to play and have an adventure
Welcome!
HI
im new to dnd - i only started a while ago
so im basically wet behind the ears
tried to play with my firends, and since i was the only one who knew anything at all, i dmd
and that ended terribly 😅
anyway lookin forward to havin a great time, and hopefully, learning a whole lot more about dnd!
You’re in the right place! If you’ve got any questions about the game, feel free to ask.
Hello - I am also new to DND, I have been doing written role plays (non-stat based) for probably... 20 some years, so I'm very used to creating characters but I am hoping to start connecting with other people and trying DND out. I am not sure how to get started on this though, and how to find groups.
Welcome! There’s some handy info in #learn-to-play that can get you going. Whenever you’re ready, #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups, too.
I tried going to find a game and all but it won't let me post anything?
What happens when you try? Did you follow the instructions there?
I have fallen into the rabbit hole
I don't have dice and I was inspired by Chuckles the Clown
So its midnight, and I wanna get into this thing
Thanks man! Oh also, I see the artificer role next to your username- I’ve always wanted to play a dwarven artificer, but have always been confused... how would you build one? Can you walk me through the process and possibly some of the choices you’d make and why?
YESS CHUCKLES
Haunting Gideon till the ends of time
Hello 🙂
hi
can anyone here explain spellcasting to me? ive read through it and i just dont get it
What part you struggling with
Some classes can cast spells. These let them do magic things like make illusions, speak to animals or throw fire.
The details vary by class, but basically you have access to a number of spells, and cast them using "spell slots" which are a measure of your magical energy.
just overall understanding
ohhh ok ok
Which spellcasting class are you looking at playing? Because the rules vary slightly between classes
all the spell casters use a different stat to determine thier spell casting ability, bards and sorcerers you charisma, clerics and durids use wisdom and wizards use intellect
half-casters (classes that dont get spells at level 1) are paladins and rangers, paladins use charisma and rangers use wisdom
there are 1/3 casters (get thier spells at level 3) but thats for mostly subclasses for the martials like fighter and rouge
Aha
Yo folks, I’m brand new here. UK timezone.
Welcome

Sick thanks very much dude
looking up the cloak of invisibility i should be getting it soon, as a rogue (or any class i presume), how would that work with battle? does the effect stop after my first sneak attack? or do i get unlimited sneak attacks lol? i doubt it but not sure how it works in battle
Being invisible grants you advantage on your attack rolls, which is one of the criteria for sneak attack
The item doesn't say attacking ends the invisibility, so it doesn't
ohh that makes sense, so basically i'd have advantage for the 2 hours that it lasts, then i gotta do the 12 hour recharge for 1 hour thing
that seems so OP
tysm ❤️
ooooo i didn't even know there were higher items ill have to learn about those
I’m curious, what level is your character? My apologies if this comes across as a little rude, but most of the time if you’ve been playing a character long enough that you’ve reached the point where you would be getting legendary tier items, you wouldn’t really be considered a “newcomer” anymore. Those are typically reserved for the highest tiers of play
11
Legendary items are intended for characters of level 17 and up
intended or required?
If you're playing at that tier of play, as Colossus pointed out, you're kinda beyond the newcomer bracket
not sure what you're saying are you saying i should ask in a different channel? i'm still very new to D&D
Intended. You DM can grant you a magic item at whatever level they see fit. It’s just what the game is balanced around
If you're new to D&D, why are you playing a level 11 character with plans for an item that you in theory won't be likely to get for another 6 levels?
ahhh i see
well i probably won't have it until around then anyways, i still have a ways to go
i like planning
and i'm curious
That's still beyond the scope of this channel
ah okay, where should i have asked?
And maybe something more for #character-discussion
okay im sorry
The main reason I brought it up was just because I was concerned that if you’re either moving through the game too quickly, or getting high tier magic items too soon, it could sour your experience. It’s meant to be a much more gradual process
yep, makes sense
I’m new to D&D beyond

Just FYI, in AL legendary items are restricted to tier 4. You can't bring them earlier
helloo how do i determine how much hitpoints ill have for my character sheet? (im a bard starting at lvl 5)
ohh that helps a lot, tysm
8 for the first level, then 20 (5*4) from the next four, plus five times your Constitution bonus. So 28 plus five times your CON modifier.
so since my con modifier is 3, my HP = 28 + 15?
Yep. Unless your group actually rolls for hit points
thank you!
Or you have anything that gives you an HP bonus like being a hill dwarf
Hey guys, Im a new player who has took a massive intrest in DND after playing Baldurs gate for a good year now, just wondering if anyone can give me advice/help on characters and how to find a campaign for newcomers

is pvp allowed? if so how does that work
It depends on your group. Some might just say no to it. The reason is that the game isn’t really designed with PVP in mind.
My group does not allow PVP. When my previous character wanted to go against the group, my dm said it was allowed, but she would become an NPC and I have to make a new character
ah makes sense ty guys ❤️
Is monk like a good class
There are varying opinions. Many people don't think so but I've always loved monks. I think the issue stems from other classes just doing most things a monk can do but better. A barbarian or fighter will outdamage a monk in melee almost always. A rogue will outsneak and outskill a monk, etc.
Monk is fun! Every class works just fine for the vast majority of games. Pick whatever you think is coolest!
Okay thank u so much
It's mostly a "flavour" class IMO, but I still love it
Overall all classes are good.
How a effective a character will be will depend on how they are built mechanically and the way abilities are used.
I have a question in dnd do you have to have a long backstory or can it be short and sweet
It can be as short as "John Warriorson was raised as a soldier, and wants to save the world from the evil dragon"!
The important part is to work with your DM in weaving your character into the world.
Short and vague works better for campaigns. Lets you make up more as you go, weaving it into the campaign. Hard to align your backstory with the situation your character is placed into without knowing spoiler-level information
And gives the DM more room to make things up too
Ok thank you
Hello!

Thank you @true musk !
why do some campaigns start with level 3 characters?
Level three is when every class has unlocked their subclass.
So for players who are already used to D&D and all have specific character concepts in mind, starting at level 3 lets them effectively skip the tutorial and jump right in.
Some campaigns start at even higher levels, too.
In fact, the most recent published adventure, Vecna: Eve of Ruin, starts at level 10.
Yup
Some adventures are designed for lower or higher level play. Some are meant to run from 1 - 20. Really depends on the module (if you're using one) and what the table wants to do.
You could even have a game start at 20 if that’s what the group wanted to do.
20 does not have to be the end either
One of my home games has been level 20 for over a year
how does armor work? for instance i was scrolling through the monsters and saw that An adult red dragon has 19 natural armor. let's say if i were to hit it with a 1d6+1 shortbow
First you'd need to roll to attack. Your attack roll would need to be high enough + your modifiers (shortbow would normally be dexterity based and use your dex modifier) plus any bonuses (proficiency bonus if you have proficiency with it). If that meets or beats the targets Armor Class, you hit. Then you can roll the damage dice to see how much damage you inflict.
So to your adult dragon target - you would roll a d20 dice and add your dexterity modifier and proficiency bonus. If that equals or beats 19, you would hit the dragon.
“Your Armor Class (AC) represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle.
Things that contribute to your AC include the armor you wear, the shield you carry, and your Dexterity modifier.
Not all characters wear armor or carry shields, however.
Without armor or a shield, your character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier” . - Basic rules, chapter 1, armor class https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
and so sneak attacks ignore the armor class?
No
No - sneak attack only applies when your attack hits and you meet the requirements for sneak attack
Yep, the key thing is landing a successful hit. Which requires an attack roll to meet or beat a target’s armor class.
Hey, I wanna make a starting blood manipulator thats able to make blood swords and knifes and such and be able to shoot beams of poisoned blood on 5e is there anything that can help me or anything? :))
Possibly a hexblade warlock with a lot of reflavouring. Weapons could be the pact weapon, Eldritch Blast for the beams. Would need DM agreement for it. The folks lurking in #character-discussion might be able to help you workshop it
Alright thank you!!!
As you learn more about the hobby you'll learn about how people "flavor" their character's abilities.
This is where the mechanics stay the same but the presentation can be unique to the individual.
For example there is a spell in the game called Mage Armor.
- If I were playing a wizard I would make this spell look like the wizard pulling the ink from their spellbook and throwing it on himself to create black inky armor.
- Whereas if I was a druid using this spell, I would make the spell look like vines wrapping around my character to form the armor.
Visually both look unique, but mechanically they both do the same thing as the spell specifies.
Alright i see i see so i could flavour eldritch blast as a high pressure beam of blood?
for my own character
Pretty much.
Just remember that to check with your group and DM before hand.
With approval from your DM and possibly the rest of your group. Blood stuff can be a bit icky, so worth discussing at session zero to make sure everyone is comfortable
Yeah my dm and friends are all okay with it
Great
Communication is vital to any successful dnd group.
Might be a dumb question because it's a language thing, but what exactly is a feat?
Feats are optional features you can take at certain levels. Some give you new spells, new skills, or abilities.
Ohhh
The rules describe them here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Feats
Ohhhh, that's why I didn't understand those things. They aren't used in the basic set! That explains everything
Might as well offer my players using a feat now that we have the players handbook. Thanks man

so uh i wanne make a bearfolk d&d character but i have no idea how to make a character
I'd suggest reading the first couple of chapters of the free basic rules (see the message just above you for a link as well as the #learn-to-play channel).
Do note there isn't an official bearfolk race in D&D and you may need to adjust your concept so you can play in a specific game or group.
Ah,nerd.
XD,hope you have lots of fun!
Bearfolk isnt an official race, but if I where you,id look into the Leonin race, then ask your dm if you can just reskin it into a bear
i have never played d&d and i don't have a dm
i only know the game thru some vids online
and i looked REALLY fun
Then,I wouldnt advise making a character with an unofficial race untill youve politely asked your DM
Or making a character at all for a matter of fact, exept to practice.
As each dm has their own world and race that are available or not
thx for the help i will ask my mother to contact the friend of her that plays d&d to contact the dm to see what the rules are
Great,hope it goes well!
Man, i really wanna play some DND again

What do most DMs use for virtual games? Foundryvtt? TTS?...
Depends on what platform you enjoy. My group uses Roll20 but you might find you like Foundry more.
I like having a visual representation of what's going on. 😋
Both platforms can do that but they do require setup
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Roll20
- Foundry
- Alchemy RPG
- Fantasy Grounds
- Maps by Dndbeyond
These are some VTTs that are getting the most attention currently.
Each of these their own pros and cons.
DMs will typically use what suits their preferences.
I'm guessing TTS doesn't get a lot of attention?
TTS?
TableTop Simulator.
Tabletop Simulator doesn't get attention in the tabletop space because it isn't isn't designed well for tabletop games like dnd and requires everyone to own a copy.
The VR capability of TTS could be interseting to run a D&D game through, but I think the result will just be an inability to take notes
Isn't foundry the same? I thought you had to buy it. 👀
Only as a DM
Only one person needs to pay for it.
Plus foundry is designed specifically for tabletop games.
Not to mention the mods that are out there to enhance the experience.
I see, makes it a lot more convenient.
Each DM will end up sticking to a VTT for a variety of reasons.
For example, I use Alchemy RPG because has atmospheric tools like scene images, ambient sound and music , while also still having basic grid map support.
I also like, that I can make content hub for my campaigns that I can give my players access to.
My friend’s DM literally just uses 6 tabs of photoshop…
Use that info as you wish
Most dms will go for roll 20
My favorite is foundry
What's the general consensus on Hero Forge prepainted minis? I see a lot of both positive and negative reviews.
Well couldnt tell ya,I dont use minni's,but the general consensus is that they look kinda same-ish and ugly, tbh I dont really care
People use it to create characters designs and use screen shots for tokens when using VTTs. Though for details, we should move the discussion to #dnd-discussion

Does anyone know what VTT means? I've seen the word used in posts about finding a game to join
Virtual Table Top
Oh ok, is it like a specific DND tool or something?
No, it is a type of tool. There are many different VTTs in the marketplace. A few examples would be Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, etc.
Thanks for the clarification, the only virtual tabletop I have is roll 20 😅
It's not D&D specific. You can check a video here for one vtt in particular: https://youtu.be/y_HEYXUbd8M
Thanks very much
So I'm trying to make a post for "looking for DM" and it's telling me something went wrong. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Im also looking for dm?
Cool, I guess we both wait until someone knows how to solve this glitch

I have a question I'm doing a 3 person campaign Saturday and no one is a Frontliner in our group so I thought I'd be it. Would it be better being a cleric or a paladin?

I have a question, one of my players created an eladrin wizard. In his sheet he just put in the misty step, im preparing the session for Friday and saw this, he's still allowed to get the cantrips and the level 1 spells, does he not?
He does yes. It might be he hasn't picked them, so you might need to go over those with him.
One thing to write down the spell you know you get, another to pick out a cantrip and 6 spells yourself.
You all confuzzle my brain
Yeah right. I'll go over it w him. Thank you
Jumping into a new TTRPG can do that
We'll be using terms and talking about things that won't make much sense just yet, but always feel free to ask what something means or for help on something.
I'll need a notebook for everything yall say but okies
Firstly, what the hell does TTRPG mean?
Tabletop roleplaygame 😄
Oh good lord have mercy
A few other ones you'll see often are:
PC: Player character
PHB: Player Handbook
DMG: Dungeon Master's Guide
MM: Monster Manual.
For all others just ask. It'll probably be a book, but sometimes a game phrase.
Glad to see i'm not the only one being overwhelmed, excited and confused all at the same time
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources some nice guides here to help out with basics
Yeah same but I'm going to throw myself into the first session as a DM on Friday. Let's hope for the best
You can do it
Someone posted a great one shot in here w some advice for new DMs. Im playing that one shot and the ressource was so good
i'm writing one at the moment (instead of working, don't rat me out). never done this before but its fun so far
Oh homebrew right off the bat? You're brave. I respect that I couldn't do that rn. I'm doing a one shot, then a wotc campaign and THEN an homebrew
Power to you
i mean, i'm neck deep into the books so i'm using a lot of that, but i know my players very well
we all would be unhappy with a one shot. Plus i really like the base story i came up with. Its pretty much the typical "there used to be war, we all gotta pull ourselfes together to maintain peace, but oh nooo, something bad is happening. Lets blame each other! Oh, the dude we thought was evil isnt evil? Ups. Ohhh its his minister, the weird warlock that kinda stared at you for too long. Gottcha"-kinda thing.
the first couple of monsters I'm gonna throw at them are Gooze (Slime in the shape of a goose
). Been a while since any of us played.
I mean, that sounds good. Using some tropes is fun. Plus you just create the world anyway, your players will interact w it and make it special so some simple baseline works perfectly well imo.
Gooze hahah I love that idea
I have a couple of 1st timers plus im a 1st time dm ( but played as pc ) so I figured a one shot is great to see if ppl like dnd as a game.
Homebrew sounds so much more fun tho
i've been doing text based rpg for.. 16 years? (god, i am so old..) So i'm used to and love creating worlds and storylines on the spot. Homebrew just feels right.
Fair
Wonderful stuff but I'm going to gently nudge you to discuss your DM work to #dm-discussion as this specific channel is meant for new to D&D folks to get to grips with the core game rules and mechanics.
I recently asked something about spells but I think I still have a question.
If my players character knows 3 level 1 and 1 level 2 spells and he has 4 slots for 1 and 1 slot for 2, he can use whatever spell he wants as long as he has the slots, right? No need to "equip" spells like in dark souls?
Hello! I have a question! Are there any "sins" of Dnd? Things that are so commonly knew that no one talks about them and are considered obvious? I don't mean breaking the rules but something more like some sort of combinations or decisions. (I'm sorry if it's confusing. English is not my first language)
this depends on the class
Oh? In that case bard (I made up the numbers as I can't get the actual ones.) he recently got to level 3
in the case of a bard, yes
You mean unspoken ettiquette I assume?
Yup
Gotcha. Was confused because it says he can change a spell at each level up
you know a certain amount of spells and as long as you have slots available you can cast the spells you know that you could legally use those slots for
What about the fighter sub class that can use spells?
There are some
- Safety first, fun second, everything else third
- D&D is a collaborative game; everyone contributes towards everyone else having fun
- Communication is key; never assume, discuss
- Out of game problems cannot be solved through in game means
Those are some that come to mind
Ty!! <33
i am 95% sure the eldritch knight fighter works similarly to the bard, in that they can only know a set amount of spells that increases as they level
Thanks!
there are classes that give you a full list of spells that you would have to 'equip'(prepare) a certain amount of, and can do so every long rest
those are the ones that would function kind of similarly to dark souls
But those classes say "you can prepare x spells at a time"?
for druids, as an example, you can prepare an amount of spells equal to your level plus your wisdom modifier, so a level 4 druid with 16 wisdom can prepare 7 spells
7 different spells he can use as he wants? Like 7 times the same spell when his slots allow it?
all casters follow the same spell slot rules, in this case since the druid would have 4 level 1 slots and 3 level 2 slots, they could cast the same level 1 spell 7 times
I think I understand now
and yes it would be 7 spells from their spell lists, which at this level would be spell levels' 1 and 2

Welcome! If you're looking to start somewhere, the basic rules linked above are the best place!
Those I looked over
We're here in this channel to answer any questions you have as you read through
thanks mate
So to play you need starter sets?
Not necessarily. They just contain dice, character sheets, the rules, and an adventure all in one place. You can legally get all of those things in other ways. Dice can be digital, and you can find free game materials online through official channels.
helpful
Technically all you need to play is some way to roll dice, the basic rules, and a few friends!
thx
Finding someone to play with is something I am having trouble
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
If you've read up on the basic rules and you're looking for a group to play with online, you can check the link above to start searching on this server!
Okay
For more options on finding folks to play with, you can see Zero's post [here](#dnd-newcomers message) or my Looking for Game/Group guide here.
Practice, mainly!
Get ready to fail and be bad, it’s the most fun
I would also suggest that being good at playing is by having fun and helping others at the table have fun. It's not a competitive game with specific win and lose conditions.
Do I message here or the lore page for help with my character
Here or #character-discussion
Note that #character-discussion is the best spot for more in depth discussion of characters and your character build.
I don’t see that channel? It could be because I didn’t choose player or dm because I have never actually played dnd before only bg3 and I do research obviously but I have not had a game yet so I didn’t know what to pick
You can view all our many channels here: #channel-guide - click the blue link to go right to the channel.
Discord likes to be "helpful" and hide channels unless you specifically tell Discord to show them (see id:customize to select which channels you'd like to see)
My boyfriend is an experienced player so I am trying to learn all this
Im sorry to pick this back up, but a wizard in this same situation wouldn't be able to cast seven level 2 spells right? Just three level 2?
that's how I meant to say it in the previous way
Aight gotcha thank you
tey have 3 level 2 slots, which would allow them to cast 3 level 2 spells, or upcast level 1 spells 3 times
Yeah exactly how I understood it. Thank you, helps a lot.
besides the players handbook, he DM guide book and that monster manual, whats like a good book resource that is worth the 40€
i mean, i hoard books anyway, so might as well get some that i actually like
Would D and D for dummies help me lok
Xanathars guide to everything and tashas cauldron of everything are great sourcebooks imo
Well we have #learn-to-play and a link to the free basic rules - I'd start there and also check out liveplay/streams of folks playing D&D (note that many of these liveplay/streams are entertainment first but can give you an idea of the game mechanics and how folks play the game)
Xanathar's was the first sourcebook I got. Probably should have gotten the player's handbook in retrospect lol but I loved Xanathars
Some folks advertise for one shots - that said I'd recommend setting up a Discord server and using #looking-for-community to advertise a community dedicated to running/playing D&D one-shots as the LFG channels only allow you to post once every 7 days.
Do note we only allow folks to advertise D&D games - e.g. folks should be able to play using the free basic rules or official D&D books (along with whatever homebrew stuff you add on top of that). But it's not for other TTRPG game systems even if they are based off the SRD.
What is Homebrew?
Ye
Yep - homebrew is home-made rules, items, stuff that you add to D&D that is not from an official D&D book/resources.
thanks, new friends. I got Xanathar and an additional monster manual ❤️
Is this the channel to ask a question about the Artificer? 👀
This is the channel for new to D&D folks to get help learning the core rules and game mechanics
What's the question? If it's a bit too complicated, we can certainly point you to the right channel.
Try #character-discussion for specific character discussions
I mean it's okay to start here but I wouldn't say artificers are specifically a "how do I start playing D&D?" question...
If it's on DnDBeyond, use #ddb-support
Awww thanks!
PC of my group is playing a light food halfling bard. Im preparing. I'm checking his racial traits and he has "lucky"
Which saves hin from rolling nat 1's for attack, ability check and saving throws. So basically anything? Is that right?
The other one is playing a monk goliath. Do I understand it correctly that he has to be wielding monk weapons/be unarmed AND isn't wearing armor for the unarmed bonus action? Also the switch from STR to DEX rolls is an option right? he doesn't have to
Yes Halfling have the halfling luck feature - if they roll a 1 they can reroll it.
And yes about the goliath monk - you got it right.
Thank you 🙂

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

is there a difference between the wand and staff as arcane focus?
price and aesthetic I think
They weight and is cost different.
Mechanically they both serve the same purpose: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArcaneFocus
mechanically speaking, nothing. The only thing that matters is whether your focus is an Arcane Focus, Holy Symbol, or Druidic Focus. If you have 2 different styles of focus in the same group, like wand and staff, which are both Arcane Focuses, they work exactly the same
oh okay, thanks for the explanation ^^
Quick question from someone who wants to get into DnD. I am curious on what if any other books other than the players handbook. That are helpful or needed.
Everything you need is available in the free Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
The Player's Handbook expands on that with a bunch of additional character options: more subclasses, more spells, more feats (a lot more), etc.
Then for even more character options, I'd recommend:
- Xanathar's Guide to Everything
- Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
- Monsters of the Multiverse

Thank you! I just recently downloaded the app, so getting this info is very helpful! Happy gaming
So for the spell mirror image it creates three duplicates of yourself, can these duplicates deal damage to opponents because they mimic actions, or do they not do any damage, it’s not said in the book
They do not. Spells only do what they say they do, nothing more and nothing less
Think of it like summoning 3 holograms of yourself
Ok thanks I just wanted to make sure.
Hello! I’m a complete newbie. I haven’t even sat down to play yet.
I have the essentials rule book, and I’ve watched some videos about how to play DnD. I understand how to play in essence, but I am a little fuzzy on a few things, namely:
—How “rolling for initiative” in battle works.
—What’s a “skills check” and how does it work?
—What are spells and how do they work?
Hi! I'm new to the server but I am not new to DND I look forward to meeting people here 😄

— Initiative is the order in which creatures act in combat. Whenever combat starts, all of the combatants roll initiative, which is usually a Dexterity ability check. The one with the highest initiative acts first, then the next, and so on. Until everyone has acted and then we loop back to the beginning.
— A skill check is a check involving a skill, like Perception or Stealth. You roll a d20 and add your bonus pertaining to that skill. Your bonus is a sum of the ability bonus of the ability related to that skill plus your proficiency bonus, if you have it. Other situational bonuses may apply.
— Spells are magical effects caused by creatures that each contain specific rules. It's better for you to read the introduction of the spell chapter in the PHB for more information.
Hello, I’m new to both this server and dnd. I’ve only played with my friends and it’s all been homebrew and made up as we go. I love playing with them but I’d like to see if I can make my way into by the book playing and have set ground rules in a separate campaign. I’m looking for a small group of people who would be willing to hold my hand and teach me as we make our way through a campaign for new players such as myself. I have a few ideas as to how to make a character but that’s about it, if you’re interested in helping me out dm me and we can see what we can do!
Please check out #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels - soliciting or organizing games in the discussion channels is off-topic and will be moderated.
Sorry I didn’t know🤷♂️
No worries - that's why I'm telling you now in my nice mod voice.
But welcome to the server and hope you have fun playing D&D!
Thank you!

Is there a recommended template to follow for staging a campaign?
Like a laundry list of things I should consider when making a campaign
I just finished my first AI-DM’d D&D adventure with my sons, using Claude 3.5 sonnet and GPT-4. It took us 7 hours over 3 consecutive nights. We explored the mountain stronghold of Frosthold, climbed and traversed the perilous Rimespire Peaks, defeated cultist ice mages, and navigated an ice labyrinth deep inside the mountain. We passed the trials within and defeated a massive ice guardian with a giant ice sword to recover the Eternal Frost Crystal, saving the town of Frosthold. Our names will forever be legend in the small mountain town.
I’m not convinced we followed the rules perfectly, but a mix between Claude and GPT-4 got us through. My sons, aged 11 and 7, are begging to start our next quest tomorrow.
that's sweet
Sure
The Dungeon Masters Guide has a good enough check list for making adventures. To turn it into a campaign its just a matter of having the objective of each individual adventure to contribute towards a larger-scale goal of the party
Otherwise, Matt Colville's entire youtube channel is a great resource for this kind of thing if you have time to binge
The best advice imo however, is to run a prewritten hardcover like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle to get an idea of how WotC writes their campaigns, and take inspiration from that
I strongly disagree with that point
WOTC has proven times and times again that they're not really good at helping dms develop a more open ended style
Their campaigns are extremely well written, but not adaptable for a more homebrew type of dming
Thats a very fair criticism, and one I tend to agree with
Do you have any examples of any prewritten hardcovers that might be a better source of inspiration for @lean kernel?
Ironically, the adventure in the dnd starter kit is great for learning open worlds
As it lets player chooses in between a fixed set of quests that can all work independently yet further the plot
Each quest giving you a piece of equipement or help to go defeat the big bad ice dragon*tm
The lore in it isnt the greatest, but the gameplay is really open ended and fun
Which is the most importent in dnd
Dnd priority isnt like detailed lore or epic scenary or gruesome combat. Its fun.
And that campaign shows that verry well
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk lmao
I dont
But I am drawing heavy inspiration from a source for my campaign theme and premise
It actually matches DnD fairly well
Sorry, I wask asking Mali the question, just wanted to keep you in the loop
That's excellent you have a source of creative inspiration tho

Hello fellow adventurers! While it says I'm new, I have played D&D before. I've just never dived into looking for groups to play with online before. I hope this discord server can help me find new people to play with.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.

What is a "West March?"
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
Beat me to it
So multi-group campaigns?
In a way.
It is a type of community campaign such as Adventurers League.
The key difference is that instead of running written modules, the DMs run one shots that they themselves created.
Is a one-shot a self-contained story campaign that only has 1 session and it is completed?
A one-shot is a one-session adventure, yes.
I’ve found that most sessions intended to be one shots end up taking much longer though
Yes, me too
Running a one-shot to completion in one session is a genuine skill (but not really a newcomer topic).
hi
You need to post in #paid-looking-for-game , not here
Some DMs run paid games, usually offering higher quality experiences than free games to justify the cost. Plenty of us don't require any payment for our DMing
So anyways. What type of adventuring do you all prefer?
better question for #dnd-discussion then here as this channel is for Newcomers that have questions about the game. More general questions like that are better for dnd discussions.
Hey there! I am new to being a DM and I am looking to run my first session with my friends somewhat soon. We will mostly likely be using Roll20 and Discord. I already own the Players Handbook on Roll 20. Now I am looking to buy some more rulebooks, not just forthe session but simply because I want to. I know there is the 2024 version coming out this/next year but I would like to purchase them anyway. Which website would you say is the best place to buy/have them on? How is FoundryVTT in comparison to Roll20 and would you recommend one over the other? Thank you so much for you help. :)
Sorry for the wall of text. 😅
If you want advice comparing different third party tools/platforms, #third-party is probably the best place to ask
Ah okay. Thank you! :)
ive really wanted to get into dnd for the longest time, 5th edition preferrably. ive played games such as baldurs gate so i have a VERY small grasp on how it works? i live in a pretty barren area so i dont think in person tabletop would work for me. i was just wondering about possible websites that would be good places to find potential parties or dms welcome to newcomers? not rlly sure where to start haha
#looking-for-players can be a good start, if not, follow the instructions in #find-a-game to make a post in #looking-for-dm
I'm new to dnd And I wanna learn it I've watched some stuff on youtube and it looks interesting and I have done regular rp And I'm heard that it's kinda like it and I wanted to start dnd Because it sounded fun and I could use my imagination So what anybody maybe wanna learn with me or teach me?

Hello
Hi
How is it determined how much a player or npc moves per turn?
Player characters base speed will be determined by their race and potentially modified by their class, items, and spells
For NPCs, it'll be listed on their stat block
So i understand the rules and all but can someone elaborate in where to play
If a player wants to run do they jsut do a dexterity check and they can go faster?, how much faster?, can they do this as many turns in a rows they like?
Have you read the basic rules?
Nope whenever I try searching videos or reading I get very confused

Hello, i have a pretty basic knowing of the rules of dnd and im looking for a game, where can i start looking?
Check the post three posts above yours for some helpful info!
thank you
Should I jeep track of the characters moving every increment or can a character just be like "I go in building to the right" and its a close building so they can just go in it orrr?
This is all covered in the basic rules
Most DnD play is broken up into two states: in combat and out of combat.
While you're in combat, you can only move specific amounts reach turn, so the things you're able to do are limited by your resources.
Outside of combat, things are much more freeform. You can say "I go in the building" and the DM will tell you how long it takes to get there and what you might encounter along the way or when you arrive.
hello, i’m learning how to be a DM, any advice?
?dmtips
There’s a ton of DM advice out there: this guide (https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet), “Running the Game” on YouTube, Sly Flourish’s content, and so much more. Read, watch, absorb, but don’t let that stop you from doing. You won’t be great at first, but that’s okay. Worry about having fun, and if you do that for yourself and the table, you’re successful.
If you've got some specific questions, we can help out!
Hey, I am just running my first adventure today and I want to heal the group, I choose to be a druid, what circle should I go for? I like the idea of circle of the stars but can it work for healing? Thanks!
Circle of Stars and Circle of Dreams both grant bonuses to healing for druids
Thanks a lot!! Wish me luck haha
Hello, first time dm here (I have played some before). I am gonna dm a pretty much entirely homebrew campaign with some friends, who has never played dnd before. And I was wondering if there was any program or app that acts like a "universal character sheet" where I, the dm, can view and update the players character sheet in real time. But they should also be able to view and manage their own character sheet too. It would also be helpful if I could manage enemy and npc character sheets. Is there anything? Also I'd appreciate any and all tips
Are you playing online? Plenty of VTTs (virtual table top programs) have character sheets that can be edited two ways.
Yeah. Unfortunately, neither me or my players has access to computers or cash to pay for programs
First one that comes to mind is dndbeyond because it has campaign creator where players can join and add their characters that everyone can view but the GM and owner of the character can edit them if needed.
I'm pretty sure roll20's free version has shared character sheets. But when you say you don't have computers, how are you playing? Just through phone voice chat?
Then I would look into DnD Beyond. The app is a little outdated, but still functional
Alright thanks
?dmtips

I kinda knew about dnd beyond. I consume a lot of dnd media although I don't play much myself. And now I'm planning on making my own session with some friends. Sad they live so far away. Otherwise we'd have irl meetings
My character is a fighter ranger. How can i put both those classes next to my name. They only allowed me one.
Unfortunately the server only allows one badge at a time here
FYI you need a profile picture server rules just so you don’t get a warning
I'll look into it thanks. Odd rule tho.
can someone teach me how to play d&d...?

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
thankyou
Thank you so much for the knowledge:D
Could anyone suggest a youtuber to kind of outline the histroy of faerun and the forgotten realms for me?

Got two characters a cleric and a Paladin kinda looked at what is good made my Paladin after a video game character I like though
I’ve been wanting to get into dnd but many of my few friends aren’t into it.
I have one I’ve been meeting up regularly with at lunch during school hours however it’s summer currently.
Plus during our “campaigns” there was a good story, yet there was no mechanics or anything like that for that matter. It was just; roll, result, repeat.

I had a dnd club at my school but sadly are teacher stopped it, because she was two tired to continue the club on fridays and her two sons did sports who also played dnd
Dang…
Which kinda sucks thats why I have played for a year now in dnd
But I am rusty I haven't played in like awhile since I do so much sports
My district is beyond strict
They blocked Minecraft education
It’s actually wild ngl 💀

Shocking my school let it happen even though it's a private school lol
Oh
Do you have to wear uniforms? If not then Consider me in it
Honestly you should try to find a new host
Still waiting for a dm to respond to my thing LOL
I have never seen anyone capitalize LOL in years
Yes we have to wear a sports jacket collared shirt and tie
Damn
Since it's collage prepatory highschool
never mind
Luckily we can take off the sports jacket in class imagine we couldn't in april when it gets warm
Yeah
But if you need a dnd campaign try #loo-for-players king
Or try #looking-for-dm
I just noticed my paladin has a 20 in strength and a 17 in charisma XD
Holy shit
I did looking for dm
Mk
and a 17 in dex
No joke I did use variant human though
Here’s a character I used for one of my campaigns: a wizard that is failed wizard school, and all his spells fail, yet they happen via coincidence.
I didn't even count the modifiers I think my paladin might be broken
It kinda is tho
You’re telling me you can beat a guy to death in Broad daylight and the guard would think you’re telling the truth when you say nothing happend.
ah I dumb XD
Strength 20 and charisma 17 is op af tho
Been a while haven't played in months
Yeah
tbh it scares me how strong it is
I believe you’re referring to starter sets that come with an adventure book, dice, a dm screen and other useful nick nacks.
Gaming sets are basically:
A set of playing cards or dices
Its the proficiency of your character with using these sets
Am I allowed to post a photo of my sheet to see if it's right?
Is spelljammer ok for new players(also pretty new dm)? I really love the idea of ship battle
There’s a few new rules to worry about, but if you have a good DM who’s open about accepting new players then go for it!
you can't post photos, but you can do a link
Im the dm, and the only campaing that ive ever done is the starter one, which went pretty wild
Then I’d advise against it
It’s a very different tone, there’s a lot more prep, and the resources for spelljammer in 5e aren’t very good so you’d have to do quite a bit of homebrew which can be tricky for new DMs
Well, ive seen a good deal for the books, and I really liked the idea, I will maybe get them, and wait when im ready
Also, pretty hard for me, im playing dnd like twice an year, and I wanted to make something different, maybe I would get my friends hooked this way
not really
but that’s a topic for optimization
hey ive never played dnd before does anyone have a group they would be ok with me joining?
Check out the instructions in #find-a-game

thanks for that
im started creatring my character, and think i understand it very well. BUT, i do have a question. I want to keep using the same weapon, but id like that weapon, a longsword, to somehow get stronger as I play the game. Is that possible? If yes, how can i make that happen? Thank you for the noob question.
you would have to ask your dm if it could evolve/level up with you
ok, i think i understood that, but if i play with different DMs, I will need to ask each time?
yes, as different dms are comfortable with different things
so maybe it will just be too diffcult, cause I might have a DM saying no, and my sword goes back to normal power. hummm the thing is, i included my sword in my backstory... as a weapon that was by my side when I was born, given to me by my father and his father and so on...
You generally make a new character and tailor it to each campaign you join
make a new character for each new campaign???
I can’t post in the looking for a dm channel. Do I have to go through another source or something?
yup
you have to post in #find-a-game
Read the instructions in #find-a-game carefully
It explains the commands you have to use
but wouldnt i lose all my levels ups??
Yes
you’d have an entirely different character
starting from lv 1???
D&D isn’t a progressive game where you ‘win’, it’s a game about storytelling
isnt the point with DnD to grow you character?
Some games start at 1st level, but not all of them
eh, some dms start at level 3 or 5
No, the point is to tell a story with friends
oh ok i see
yes i understand that too.
i thought you kept your character with you...
You play a character for a campaign, then you will most likely have to modify it or make a new character entirely for a new campaign, if you choose to join
You should read the Basic Rules, it sounds like you don’t understand the purpose behind D&D
maybe not yet hehe... i focused too much on making my character which i thought i could reuse all the time
so i shouldnt focus on my character until i start playing a game?
You can premake a character but there is no gaurentee they will fit into a DMs game. It can be better to wait to find a game and then make a character for that.
you should make a character before the 1st session tho
i see...
i feel so bad when a player shows up with a fleshed out character that makes no sense in the adventure
esp new people
i just like the idea and identity of keeping the same character..
you should try Adventurer's League
thank you for that, makes sense
so for now, no focus on making my character until i can actually play? Or just for practice i guess.
Definitely can make one for practice!
No harm in learning how to make a character so you're ready to go when you find a game
thank you for that.... i was even going to make my character on hero forge, but if i cant use the same character haha, that would be a waste
it's never a waste big dawg
those kinds of things make your characters memorable
and your DM will appreciate it
can i send photos here? I want to show you guys my character ive makde on heroforge?
nope
not in this channel
ok
you can do it in hero forge
well, i think for now, ill keep that character, i like it and the background story is really cool, to me at least. hopefully when i do get some real games, the DM will be ok too HOPE
Is there a website I can visit that has a lot of character builds stored? I would like to see what other people come up with.
Reddit might be a good place to check
What does shaman do in dnd? I think its different from the Warcraft universe
Theirs no shaman?
At least in playable classes
You might be thinking of warlock?
I swear ive seen Something...maybe custom class
Nope
Is there any class that likes to shoot with lightning?
Every magical class?
Druid? Is that what you're thinking about?
Ye, something with nature
Druid.
Because I wanted to make a character that can shoot lightning, but isnt imune to the heat produced by it
So he has some kind of machinery that keeps him cold, and the 2 classes I thought would be like Shaman and artificier, but i didnt know shaman wasnt a thing in the official dnd
i dont think lightning produces heat behind it (atleast lightning bolt doesnt) unless youre talking about how it can ignite flammable surfaces?
For lightning shooting, you could look into the "tempest cleric" subclass
Shhhhh fantasy logic
ah ok
I was thinking that the character produces it, like it goes trough his body
Lightning bolt doesn’t harm the caster
also sadly i think tempest cleric dont get access to spells like witch bolt or lightning bolt bc i had a player try go tempest cleric before for a full lightning themed build was severely disappointed
thats cool, you would have to talk to your dm about possibly homebrewing that tho lol cus i dont think thats a feature in dnd
1st Fog Cloud, Thunderwave
3rd Gust of Wind, Shatter
5th Call Lightning, Sleet Storm
7th Control Water, Ice Storm
9th Destructive Wave, Insect Plague
Yeah he dosent have the iconic ones, but close enought.Plus, taser mace
Call Lightning can hurt you, if you target an area you occupy
But I don’t see a common situation where you’d want to do that
Wands of Lightning bolts solve the "can't actually cast that spell" problem for Tempest clerics 😁
That seems like a mostly aesthetic thing rather than a mechanical one tbh.
Sorcerer twinned spell quickened spell shocking grasp
ah thats actually cool, tho the player ended up switching to a barbarian before i could give them any magic items
With extended spell ofc
Like, the lightning produced by him goes trough his body, he is immune to that. BUT lightning is also really, really hot, and he isnt immune to that. So, to combat that, he would have some kind of movement impairment because a lot of mechanical stuff from cooling down, and taking turns off to cool down, makes sense? Probably not in dnd
Doesn’t sound like any 5e option. But most of what you said can be accomplished narratively instead of mechanically
Mechanically, casters in dnd dont need that at all.
But if you wanna nerf yourself go right ahead
Im not trying to argue or anything, dont get me wrong, just want to make myself clear*
For the content >:D
Ofc!
Movement speed penalty thought is a VERRY bad idea in dnd
So instead of doing that, you can narrate your tech cooling down and not casting any heat based spells for a turn
or you could alternate frost spells and lightning spells
Maybe not so harsh, like 25 instead of 30? (From what ive played, all characters had 30)
You could play a dwarf, dwarves have 25ft and are really strong,so it makes sense for carrying all the tech
Yeah unless your build requires you to move around a lot, a small penalty isn’t going to be that bad
a majority of characters have 30
exceptions include specific races, barbarians, monks, and probably others
Oh, to compensate that, I thought to give a buff to the lightning spells, something like idk, a smaller lightning bolt as a cantrip?
I'd suggest not messing with the main mechanics of dnd
Ask your dm first
buff/debuffs are not a great idea
That’d be up to your DM, but there are lightning cantrips already
There are? :D
Honestly, trying to give yourself buffs and debuffs for narrative reasons usually just gets overly complicated really fast
And rarely balances well, ime
and also yknow, won't be fun
Lightning Lure
shocking grasp and lightning lure, might be others but thats what i remember off the top of my head
Shocking grasps
Those are the only 2 I can think of
Thunder clap also describes itself as lightning I think
Pretty sure it's thunder damage
Yes,but it narrates itself as a mini-storm with lightning and light
Also, another question, does warlock really have infinite possibilities from a narrative stand point?
Every class has infinite narratives possibilities
Like where its powers come, and stuff like that
heck,I once played an atheist paladin
i'd say yes cus warlocks get their powers from their patrons who are viewed as higher beings
People just limit themselves over stereotypes of the classes, but you can do an interesting spin on really any class
My most religious character is a fighter
I mean, it’s still up to the approval of the DM. In general a warlock is supposed to get their power from making a pact with a more powerful entity
Warlock seems the most complex one at least, maybe I will look into that
How that pact is made, with whom, the terms, and the circumstances of it open up quite a lot of points of creativity
Like ive heard people make pseudo immortal builds, with the patron keeping him alive to pay the contract or smth
That’s, well, that’s homebrew at that point since immortality like that is going outside of the rules
This is probably more #character-discussion territory than newcomers
Oh ok, sorry
Will ask more questions there when I get to make a character
anybody got any tips for roleplaying? im joining my first session soon thats mostly rp focused with less combat
Think about what your character wants and how they'd react to things
hi, I am seriously brand new never did a campaign before, I am looking at the character sheet and I was watching some videos but it seems like a lot of the info on what I'm trying to do with it conflicts with eachother
I have done a campaign
But not since a long time probably since few months so I am rusty on rules and such I remeber some though
What are you trying to do that conflicts?
And have you read the basic rules on character building?
Aarakocra with cleric class
What parts of that conflict?
A intresting time
You'd have to stick with light armor iirc, but it seems fine otherwise
So I'm not sure what the problem is

as a noob of D&D, my character, well the one i have just created, id like him to have a horn, this horn would have a special ability when blown, I was thinking it could do something like stop one attack per day, or something like that, but because of my backstory has my character loose all his abilities and being reduced to lv 1, he will need to remember how to use the horn. maybe after reaching a certain level, maybe lv3 will he be able to reuse his magic horn.
Is that something that could be done>
Your best bet is going to be to "re-flavor" certain abilities.
This is where the mechanics stay the same but change the presentation.
Overall when trying bring a character concept to life in D&D you need to take the time to learn the rules and mechanics of the game. Once you do, the rules and mechanics become great tools you can use to build some very interesting characters.
Would kicking a door down be an athletics check?
It can. It’s the DM’s call to determine if and what skill check is needed.
makes a lot of sense, thanks a milion. BUT, my character is a human worrior, can it play spells?
Warrior isn’t a class. Some classes have access to spells while others don’t. There ways for non spellcasters to get access to spells. But for now, it’s best to read up on the different classes from the free basics rules.

itll happen one day hehe
Well we can definitely start off online just to get the basics down then hopefully meet up one day and play for real
ima direct yall to #find-a-game to look for games to find
yes that could work too... many people are doing that??
playing online isn’t not playing for real
I know but I still want to learn some of the basics
same here, even simple game, just to understand how it is...
more then playing>?>>
no, but you kinda should read first
if not just to make it easier on a dm so they don't have to explain everything
of course its very important to do
and already done that a lot
even have the players guide in front of me
if you want a game, try looking in #find-a-game or make a post of yer own
thanks for that
Hi I'm new to dnd. I was looking for a party that could teach me how to play. I have the main resources required and went through both dm guide and ph. If this is the wrong place srry😅🥲
the basic rules should teach you how to play
if you want to join a game, #find-a-game
Irl experience is better no? And I can't get my head around them so I need someone to help. I'm no fool but dnd book didn't have a straight forward "when you do this , you do this" srry
yes it's better, but it should tell you how the basic actions and such work
T_T me is orc. Not very bright
Hi I haven't played DND for a collective of 4-5 years! I'm in need of a quick rundown on how to play as I don't particularly remember
I'll send you smth that helped me a lot. Today im playing my first dnd round as a dm and I referred to this many times. Its not straight, "if this happens, do this" its more like a "how do I dm?"
