I sadly have another question the tokens of the departed skill that comes from the phantom class specifically states i have to use my free hand but im dual wielding
Think dm lets me drop my wepon to use it? Id be fine with that
If both your hands are full, you cannot use any feature that requires a free hand
Yes, dropping a weapon would free up your hand
Dropping my wepon and using the skil is not a 1 turn action i assume?
It's not explicitly stated, but generally implied by the rules, that dropping an item (with some exceptions) does not require an action
Anything that doesn't require an action isn't limited as to when you can do it
(assuming it has no other criteria)
Thank you
hi so i created my character in dnd beyond so what am i suppose to do now
i dont know about anything
i have 0 knowledge of it for now of how to play
Same
š
But I know some stuff about dnd

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
Where do I go to play DND on here?
well you will need to find a group to play with
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
We don't play DnD on this server, but we do have a channel for finding groups
How active is the group finding Chanel because I really want to get into dnd but have no one to play it with
you could also try a discord server from some dnd related content creator, those tend to be active
Any suggestions?
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This is a great way to learn as AL Games follow rules as written guidelines,
- Games are broken down into self contained adventures that are completed in a single session.
- This can be played in person and online.
- #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690are channels in the server where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Itās fairly active as there 5 channels dedicated to finding groups, each with its own focus. #find-a-game presents those options.
Thank you so much

any help or advise
If you're a new player, all you really need is the basic rules (which are free), a way to roll dice, and a group to play with!
You can start with just the free basic rules if you'd like.
If you're really interested in purchasing some books, the Player's Handbook is the best place to start
Keep in mind that other sales will occur throughout the year, so definitely take your take with the free basic rules.
its just that i feel very limited with the spells i can take
as a sorcerer and warlock
Keep in mind, that depending on the campaign you are playing it can take some time for your character to level up.
So I wouldn't be too worried about the availability of spells.
Most of the spells are in the basic rules
Books like tashas gives some expanded spell lists though

Are there any druid of the moon time control spells
(NOT FOR ME I FINISHED MY SPELLS)
There are extremely few spells in D&D that have anything to do with "time control" and most of them are just in flavor anyways. But the ones that do exist are pretty much all exclusive to wizard
But flavor is free, so you can take a normal druid spell and reflavor it to be time themed, if you want
Bruh
Thats a certified
moment
Idk ima go tell my friend
Ok ima go ask #homebrew
Never done a single campaign ever š
well, welcome!
Welcome to the hobby!
Welcome to the hobby.
If you're looking to get into a campaign, I recommend starting in pre-written adventures designed to be completed in a single session called one-shots.
Playing a variety of one shots can provide a great way to determine what your campaign preferences are, while also learning what type of play and DM styles you are most compatible with.
Is that important to know? I cant see myself being picky
Finding a good table to play at is like dating because D&D is a social game.
how does one kindly force one's friends to play funny dice game ?
been tryna convince em for ages
All iād really ask for is someone to be patient with me really. But then again what do I know
ik i was just putting it that way cos idk
are they interested in this type of game because it may not be that difficult to just ask the "hey would you guys be down to play DnD?"
D&D is a social game that involves roleplaying, combat, and exploration (the three pillars of D&D).
I recommend you have them watch an actual play on Youtube or Twitch to see how a typical game is played.
D&D is no longer a "nerd" game. It's been "mainstream" with Stranger Things and Big Bang Theory.
Funnily enough I found BG3 a great way to get ppl interested in D&D
Besides, these days "geek is chic."
that's cool they don't need to be into nerd things it's a pretty simple thing to understand if you explain it properly
and you'd be surprised at what people are into
never said it was but its alot easier to get someone into D&D if they are in that typical "geek" interests because there is more crossover
ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
nah they are all int like sports n stuff
where are you going with this?
Fantasy Football is just RPG for jocks. š
true tbf
one of my players is into sports and they enjoy playing
are they American tho
yeah
Lots of famous "jocks" are into D&D btw.
makes sense
cos in my country its a bit different
like here its a lot weirder to be into stuff like D&D, Anime etc
then start a cult for dnd
Any media you can use to funnel them toward the format of D&D could be a good way to do it, like longer form board games, games like BG3, etc
"Jocks Machina" one-shot with Paul Wight (WWE's The Big Show), Joe Manganiello, Travis Willingham, and Ron Mathew
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-blGAjzL3yI
true or i'll just keep at em cos eventually i got one to give anime a go
Yes because expectations and preferences can vary wildly. Knowing those answers can help prevent a campaign from dissolving.
is it that hard for someone to try something one time for a friend?
I can relate, getting my friends to try D&D was also quite difficult
a good dm and a good party is important for your first time playing well not necessary a good party but at least a fun one
its just alot more weird to do certain things in Europe compared to America
idk why it just is
While this doesnāt cover everything, knowing the answer to these questions can help set yourselves up for a successful campaign.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
I mean initially it was going to be a close friend of mine dming a campaign but itās just been too hard getting everyone together we havent even been able to make a start
also, a downside is that dnd guides and books are not translated into too many languages so it is kinda limiting sometimes
Just keep at it! And if they don't you can always try finding games in here in the meantime!
you got to find a schedule especially if you want to play biweekly
can I steal this for personal use?
Feel free to to use, thatās what it is there for.
Honestly donāt think itāll go ahead hence why Iām looking for a new campaign to start on
you might even want to be a DM at some point and if you have a big story that you want to play but you can't get anybody there then what was the point?
that is a reasonable answer to your dilemma
as long as you want to play there will be a group out there that is good for you
Yep, but it is going to require some work. Whether you are a player or DM.
D&D can be very hard to schedule. You could try doing a campaign with others while you wait for your friends, if your schedule allows!
A good recommendation is to start with premade adventures designed to be completed in a single session, known as one shots.
Main reason, they require minimum prep and a minimum commitment for both players and the DM.
it is very important to know what you want your DnD experience to be like because there are a lot of people out there that want the same thing
Is anyone looking for a player to join their group? Iām dying to play some D&D, itās been awhile.
Check #find-a-game
And those that want something different that may not always be compatible.
it's also a way to learn about certain elements of the game that reading doesn't really explain
My post here can help guide you through some options: #dnd-newcomers message

The bot post above has great resources for getting started, and the #learn-to-play channel has even more detailed guides if you are interested. After you've taken a quick glance at some of the provided material, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help
is it worth multiclassing profane soul bloodhunter to warlock?
Not really a newcomer question
Consider asking over at #character-discussion or #optimization
That's not really a topic we can help you with in this channel. Blood Hunter is a homebrew class. Homebrew, and multiclassing are both not newcomer-friendly topics
ok ty
I have read the articles and rules mentioned in the website and the learn to play channel. Now I have a question, can we choose our own spells in a game or is it given to us in some other way?
When you choose your class, if that class has access to spellcasting, it will have a list of spells that class can learn or prepare. You choose your spells from that list
How many can we choose? Does it depend on the class on my character?
class and level are the main factors of the list of spells
Okay thanks a lot
no problem
Where will be a good place to begin because I have never played dnd before
begin in general? dnd beyond is a good way to learn about character making. but if you want to start playing finding a group is going to be the main thing.

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
D&D is a game of rules. You can't avoid reading the rules.
While it is possible to learn some things as you go, you will be expected to put in at least a little effort to learn things before joining a game. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, youāre just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You donāt have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
I read the first 2 steps
Keep reading.
Can u explain like whats the stat limit and how absurd is too absurd in a game like
What if someone makes a
ā¢bard
ā¢goliath
ā¢female
Etc etc and idk how the stats work
Im intersted in the bard class as if now
Like do i need to ready up a sheet to get in a game?
That's why we told you to keep reading. Chapter 7 covers ability scores in greater detail.
I dont need details tbh jus give me the basics for now
Read the rules or watch the tutorial videos linked above.

Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donāt have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
if you want to learn through playing the game to figure out what you like definetly do a one-shot
So thr max is 20?
does the "attack action" include spells?
That's Cast a Spell action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ActionsinCombat
Correct. Most of the time
Hi im new here
What's annoying is I made a character for a campaign, and I don't really like them and I have a much better idea but I can't change now

What's a good character layout for a total newbie
The short answer is whatever you're interested in! The character sheet tool on DND Beyond does a great job of laying out how your character will work as you progress.
Make sure to read about a class you're interested in in the player handbook as well
Thanks man!
my friends and i would like to play, we all are fairly new to the game so no one feels experienced to be a DM yet and i was wondering where can i find a dm ?
Oh same! But I don't know how ow where to find the DM?
I'm still new to DnD to be honest ._.
ahahah same same š„²
it's a whole new world for me
I just tried looking but haven't found anything specifically for looking for a DM just looking for players
Same :/
@buoyant steeple found it its in #find-a-game
omg thank you my hero
No problem, also whats your campaign about :O
no clue yet what about you ?
Mines some sci fi campaign but currently working out on some world building
My character creator sheet isnt working
Oh no :(
What
Oh nevermind
Hi, im new here
Ive played one game of dnd
So im really looking forward to playing online
Hello! I've never played dnd before so I just wanted to try it out, preferrably online
all the games are either full or are 18+ sooooo now we wait!
Oh cool, same!
can someone explain what exactly the game systems do and what they affect? ex: the difference between 5e and earlier versions
How do I go about finding a game? Iām new to D&D btw.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I have started on it
This article (https://www.dicebreaker.com/series/dungeons-and-dragons/how-to/dnd-edition-differences) gives a bird's-eye view of the various editions. There are so many rule differences and emphases that they feel pretty distinct as games, with some common DNA.
Hello!
Can anyone explain reaction - I tried searching in dnd beyond and nothing comes up (ready is the top hit). Do I get a reaction once / round? Once per attack? Somewhere in between?
You get one reaction per round of combat. It resets at the beginning of your next turn.
Example: an enemy moves out of my reach, so I make an opportunity attack as a reaction. It isn't my turn, but I've used my reaction for that round. When my turn comes around again, I get another reaction to use, and so on.
Ok - so if I use the shield spell on an enemy right after me in initiative order , no opportunity attacks. Enemies can walk right by.
I assume you mean you cast shield as a reaction when an enemy attacks you, yes?
Either way, yes. You would have no more reactions for the rest of the round.
That includes opportunity attacks as well.
When you take a reaction, you can't take another one until the start of your next turn. If the reaction interrupts another creature's turn, that creature can continue its turn right after the reaction.
Ok - I read that glorious defense (glory Paladin) could stack that with shield (given a source of the shield spell). Sounds like the source of that is incorrect since they are both reactions
What do you mean by stack?
That you could use both shield and glorious defense in one reaction?
Shield isn't even on the paladin spell list. I'm confused by what you're saying lol
Letās say I acquire shield spell from a multi class. The page I was reading seemed to say I could end up with +10 AC from shield and glorious defense
You can't take more than one reaction per round, so that's not possible. It could be that they were referring to shield of faith?
You could increase your AC using shield of faith, then use glorious defense to further boost your AC during your reaction.
Hello,
I am new to dnd and playing my first campaign, we just recached level 4 and I wanted to ask how the ability score thing works? I was under the impression the +4 bonus I had to my dex would go up to +5 when i increased it, but instead the base 18 went up, i thought as a barbarian I could skill up my con and dex and even get an awesome +2 to my AC with unarmoured defense. But now that I think about it, I have no idea how the skills and abilities score is calculated.
As a barbarian I have -1 in int and wis and the base score is 9 so I assumed a base character starts at 10 in all skills?
But I have +3 in str and the base for str is 17? how? why?
I tried reading about skills and abilities in a few places but couldnt really find an answer, I just wanna understand the mechanics of dnd.
Thanks in advance!
So, to recap, you reached level 4, and you took an Ability Score Increase? You placed two points into an ability of your choice
yea 1 in dex 1 in con
What was your dex and con at before the ASI?
the base for dex was 18 and modifier was +4
the base for con was 17 and modifier +3
here's the page about ability scores and modifiers https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
when you take an ASI, you are increasing the score, the modifier only goes up every other "point" (on even numbers)
^^
so 16-17 STR = a +3 STR modifier, 18-19 is +4, and for a +5 you need a score of 20
oooohhhhhhhhhhh
ahh
is my assumption that a base char starts at 10 in all scores correct then?

- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Not really. Using the word "start" isn't really accurate. 10 just means you have a 0 ability score modifier. But you can have an ability score of 8, or even lower depending
Incorrect. With point-buy, your scores begin at 8 and you can only increase them from there. Standard array is a set of numbers, and rolling means there's no baseline: you just get what you get from the dice.
ah ok, so for int, my modifier is -1 coz my score is 9
I assumed my score is 9 coz my modifier is -1
Your score determines the modifier, yeah, not the other way around.
Ah thanks folks, that clears up a lot!
I will say, why do you have so much Dex as a barbarian?
uhh, idk? is that bad?
PS: Maybe coz I am doing a ranged barb?
not bad necessarily but a lot of barbarian abilities actually only affect melee attacks
It negates nearly all your class features
rage and reckless attack's benefits don't extend to ranged weapons for example, and rage especially is very strength-focused mechanically
Nearly all barbarian features are locked to strength based melee
Youāll be far better off playing a fighter or ranger and reflavouring, if you want an angry archer
ah yes, I understand that, I mainly wanted to do barb coz I heard of relentless rage and that sounded badass, I will also be picking up the gunner feat to negate disadvantage in close proximity and just use the rage as a way to resist damage, I know its a stupid build especially for a first time player, but honestly me, the rest of the party and the GM are having fun with it, so for now i am rollling with it.
But I understand its def not a good mechnically for a serious and tougher campaign with veteran players, I will keep that in mind!
As long as it's fun, that's all that matters
I am also an elf barb LOL, the GM said they will give me a gun flavoured as a strong special bow so yeah, its very fun
I definitely Agree
Do we jusst make characters before we join a campaign or do we ask the game master whats allowed and then make a character
you can make a character before, but make sure to change stuff if the DM disagrees with something
Hello everyone! I am completely new to the game and would love to start my first campaign. Unfortunately I dont know any DMās nor people that play the game so if anyone could help me out that would be great! I already created a character and read/looked up the basic rules and how a game is played but have never actually gotten to play. Thank you in advance!
Check out #find-a-game š
Good idea - and keep in mind you can try difference tables and DMs out if things don't work

Yo I only played this game for 2 times and now imma be the dm. Does anyone have short like 2-3 hour dnd campaigns for lvl 1s?
Intro to Stormwreck Isle is available for free on D&D beyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/intro-to-stormwreck-isle#IntrotoStormwreckIsle
Thank uu
how do i play with others
I would check out #looking-for-players if you want to find a group
im a player not a dm
Ah shoot sorry that was the wrong link lol I meant #looking-for-dm or you can check out #find-a-game iirc
How common are Dex saves that would be applicable to shield master? (Dex saves that target only me). Now that I realize I only get 1 reaction per round, Iām not sure how useful the save for no damage feature of shield master is
hey, I've always wanted to try dnd, but I never had a chance. I do have some time (I can dedicate few hours in a week), but I have really 0 experience on it. I see there are already some sessions to join, but that feels bit intimidating...
Do you have any tips for me?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
You can check out the resources linked above and the material in #learn-to-play. If joining a group sounds like a bridge too far, you could sign up for a newbie session through one of the virtual weekends in the server's Events tab!
i have a question
Maybe we have an answer!
i am wondering i am playing a dragonborn and dragonborns have immunity to sleep so can my dragonborn just do deep meditation when taking a long rest?
I'm not sure where you're reading that, but Dragonborn don't have immunity to sleep
its not clear in the rules
Looking for players has listings by DMs who want to run games and are trying to gather players. Check it out.
You're thinking of elves, and yes, they meditate: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/3-elf
Hey it says page not found when I say view product
Racial Traits:
Immunity to sleep and paralysis: Dragonborn are immune to sleep and paralysis as all draconic creatures. Draconic Bloodline: All Dragonborn are possessed of dragon blood, by using their dragon breath for the first time, they will be allowed to select their specific draconic heritage.
Not sure where you're reading this, but this is probably homebrew.
The link above is to the actual Dragonborn race
The one you posted is unfortunately just made up by someone
I would recommend sticking to official sources like the basic rules, as fandom sites like that are unreliable at best and piracy at worst. (That particular link isn't even for Dungeons and Dragons)

Yep
okay for more experience players what books would you suggest for a 50/50 (player/dm)?
Do you own any books currently?
not currently
Xanathar's Guide or Tasha's Cauldron are the best books for both DM and Player content in my opinion
But if you don't have anything yet, the PHB and the Dungeon Master's Guide are both great places to start as well!
The PHB is pretty central. The DMG doesn't help with how to run the game, but some of its ancillary content is useful if you can find it. Ditto what Dosh said about Xanathar's and Tasha's. Monsters of the Multiverse for more player race options.
As a DM am i supposed to preread the entire campaign book
Honestly?Id advise staying FAR away from modules and pre written campaings as a new DM
Most of em are kinda meh and out wayyy too much pressure on the DM
I disagree hard with Mali; I definitely think you should use a pre-written as a new DM, but it doesn't have to be a whole campaign book. A short adventure or one-shot is a better place to start.
That's a... Very unusual recommendation. It's usually very recommended to start with a prewritten adventure
I disagree with Mali's advice. I highly recommend you as a new DM use prewritten adventures so you know how D&D adventures work.
As for this question, you don't need to read the ENTIRE adventure beforehand, but certainly skim the later parts to have an idea of that your players are going to expect.
And if you do run a pre-written, it's generally a good idea to read it through before running. This is one reason why a short adventure is preferable: you can read it in a shorter span of time than a whole hardcover book.
There are many prewritten adventures that are written for new DMs and players, such as the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle from the Starter Set.
no i've nothing about it i am very new
Good luck! Hope you and your players have a good time.
I think people just dont understand the reality of prewritten adventures
So basically you're throwing a new DM at a wall of useless lore that they will THINK is important but never really use, countless npcs that are overdevelopped for a single encounter, and a linear adventure that dosent represent dnd at all
And you rather have them jump into DMing without any guidance...? This is #dnd-discussion territory.
This is why we recommend the Starter Set adventure which is very short and basic.
That's entirely contingent on the adventure in question. There are adventures intentionally written for newer DMs:
- Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk
- Dragons of Icespire Peak
- Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
- Wilds Beyond the Witchlight
D&D can be a linear adventure, that's not a misrepresentation of the game
hello! how do you make the ability score increase on dnd beyond when a character levels up? like my characters are reaching lvl 4, but when i add xp to their sheets it doesn't prompt anywhere what abilities they want to use their asi on and it doesnt default to any of them either
The only decent prewritten adventures I witnessed where non-wotc adventures,so looking into third party modules may be a good idea
I would argue as a newcomer, approaching D&D via linear adventures is a good way to get a feel for the game itself before branching out into building worlds and storylines
This sounds less like newcomer advice and more like personal bias
That lich Azalin Rex i saw him for the first time in the amusement park on the house of horrors wallpaint with 3 other monsters
but this was deleted a year ago
if links allowed i can show ya'll
Oh, forgot, one-shots are great for newcomers and the books offer a lot of value:
- Candlekeep Mysteries
- Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel
- Keys from the Golden Vault
Great benefit as a new DM is:
- Lots of value, you're getting several adventures for the price of one
- Short and self contained, not a lot to take in
- Smaller time investment; if something goes awry it's one or two sessions
You have to go into the character builder/editor part of the sheet and use the Class tab. There should be a prompt for Feat or ASI, and selecting the latter will prompt options for what to increase.
Do you have a D&D question? This channel is to help new players learn the rules of the game.
Do you have a newcomer question relating to that?
ahhh yes ty! just saw that
No but i am saying it normally
Ive seen new dms try lost mines of phandelver as a "beginning" campaign and just immidietely panick because of the sheer ammount of useless info the book provides
I would suggest asking on #ddb-support instead of here
Okay, well this is the newcomer advice channel, so try and stay on topic as it pertains to that
true! tyvm
ok sorry it was a mistake
Okay, sounds like something for #1029833015423143957 rather than here
But if they are new they will struggle more with creating a good adventure from scratch
Doesn't really reflect my experience or the experience of anyone else I know or have spoke to, and critique of adventures isn't really on topic
Let's not get off topic by debating what is and is not good for newcomers, and just focus on providing advice
@kind compass carry on in #dm-discussion
Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone has some experience with running a campaign in Sigil
That'd be more #dm-discussion!
Okay ty

hello people
Hello!
I was wondering if there was a specific european community or if everyone was here
Uhhhh I think there should be one
In #looking-for-community
thanks
i'll look into that
it's kinda hard to find games when most of them take place at 1/2am my time and requires VC
thanks for your help
Hey guys
Is there a community that doesn't like start a game at 1/2 am in the morning
Like ik in other countries it's not 1/2 am but here where I am it is
Or like even a game?
No problem!
You can always find something if you look long enough and in enough places. Keep up the search!
Did you check out https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 ?

Hello!
Welcome
This is genuinely my first time ever stepping foot into anything DnD
Welcome!
Thank you
Check the pinned to get started if you wanna learn
Also #learn-to-play. If you have specific questions, do feel free to ask!
Oh ok, Iāll head there then
Oh wait, thatās not a channel I can text in š¤£
I really have no idea about the rules, how a campaign works etc, or even how you create characters at all, lol
Are there certain confines your imagination has to be within when creating a character? As in, in-universe species and powers etc?
If you're new to creating a character, try using the character creator tool on DND Beyond. It will clarify a lot of questions you have I'm sure!
D&D is a very rules oriented game. There are very specific guidelines to follow when creating your character and playing the game. Especially when it comes to combat
Check out the links on races and classes here:
Thank you very much guys. Currently mid shift, so saving it for when Iām home! š
is there a video that explains how dice rolls work
Hello everybody!
What is the maximum amount of level 3 spells a Wizard can know at level 5?
It appears you only know 2
You gain 2 at level 5
What other ways can you gain more level 3 spells?
I am new to wizard it seems confusing
Find, buy or learn from a teacher to copy into your spellbook.
Find? How would I find more?
Like my Level 5 Wizard Gnome (Necromancer) is currently in a cave fighting a Necromancer funny enough
How would he potentially find/learn new spells
What about Buy? Who would sell spells?
That's up to your DM. The DM decides what loot your party finds, which may include wizard spell scrolls and spellbooks.
Okay okay
So tell me when a wizard levels up, each level he gains two more known spells right?
Yes, two spells of any level the wizard has spell slots to.
A level 3 wizard can't learn a 9th level spell, for example. Only 1st or 2nd level spells.
And a Wizard only gains access to level 3 spells at level 5 right?
So he would only know 2 level 3 spells unless he buys/learns/finds
Yes.
Got it thank you
The DM tells you.
What don't you understand about ability skill checks?
for example if they roll a 10 for a strength check does that mean they win?
Hiya
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the gameās lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Hereās a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
If the DC (Difficulty Class) for the test is 10 or less, then yes. That would generally be on the easier side.
Have you looked at the Basic Rules yet?

Soo I got a question
but like what if they have an strength ability score of like 8 for example would their roll be the same as a person who has a strength ability score of 16?
idk if that made sense
You roll the dice and add the relevant ability score modifier. Someone with higher Strength may have a bigger number to add.
You want it to contest a DC. If it's a Grapple check then it's against the opposing enemy's Str check.
A Str check will be a d20 plus Str modifier.
And this channel has answers. Whatās your question?
If it's an ability skill check then you decide what the DC is:
Task Difficulty DC
Very easy 5
Easy 10
Medium 15
Hard 20
Very hard 25
Nearly impossible 30
Thanks can Rouges can use spells nothing big more like something relate for there elements
Rogues don't normally cast spells (only the Arcane Trickster subclass can cast spells).
im going to read this now thanks
Ok thanks so what class uses weapon and small spells
Hey, completely new player looking to learn and join some games. Iām on BST (time here right now is 2020). If anyone can help with this Iād greatly appreciate it. Just want to have fun, make some friends etc. (I am an adult, Iād rather group with other adults):

Dam you can fill the bible with this
Thank you so much, really appreciate it. Where would I find a beginner friendly games after Iāve learned the basics?.
*find beginner friendly games
Sorry for my appalling grammar there
you added "a" it's not that Appalling. you can also ask around to see if anybody is running a beginner friendly game, like a one-shot.
Check out #looking-for-players . Remember you can also use search in Discord. Otherwise Roll20, LFG on Reddit or the D&D Beyond forums are places to look.
- This is a great way for new player to learn because AL Games follow rules as written guidelines.
Iāll try looking through that, Iām deffo just looking for games over discord, people are terrifying in real life. Thanks so much again, you guys paper! (Rock is dead)
It can take some time to find a game. First of all, you'll want to read the instructions on #find-a-game carefully.
So this isnāt something I can get involved in regularly?.
How do i implement items in my campaign?
That is more a of a #dm-discussion question.
i didnāt know there was a channel for that thx
happy to help
You certainly can! Many groups play on a weekly basis. Finding one, that's the trick. Cast your net wide and have patience.
On it! Thanks so much again for your help.
Yes. There many types of dnd game groups, it's best to focus on ones that are most compatible with your preferences.
I recommend starting in pre-written adventures designed to be completed in a single session called one-shots.
Playing a variety of one shots can provide a great way to determine what your campaign preferences are, while also learning what type of play and DM styles you are most compatible with.
Drinking, sarcasm and fighting the biggest, scariest things the dnd universe has to offer.
Just having a laugh and some fun really.
True but people have varying levels of preferences that determine what a person considers to be fun.
For example, an adventure can be:
- Linear
- The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.
- Non-Linear
- The storyline that has story events can be done in any order.
- Sandbox
- The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.
I'm trying to be a DM to my group and I am just wondering if i should make a campaign and then my group can make their characters adjust to the campaign I made or if I should wait till they make their characters and then make a campaign?
I recommend you find an adventure first. It takes longer for you to prepare the adventure than for your players to create a character.
Ok! TEACH ME THE WAYS OF THE DND PLZZZZ ^^ (aka im here to learn the rulesā¦)

Ok ^^
quick and random question, but when it comes to races in dnd, are you tied to only the ones provided or could you do something more out of the norm in a campaign such as be half werebear? sorry if that sounds stupid, i'm new to everything
It's up to your DM what are the playable races in their campaign setting.
Lycanthropes aren't playable races because they're a tad OP. The closest thing is the Shifter from Eberron setting.
ohh, okay! thank you so much!
?tag new abilities
Modifiers are added to d20 rolls like Attack, Spell Attack, Initiative, and Saving Throws, and as well as damage rolls.
modifiers are what gets added to dice rolls to determine the result
moreso a flat bonus
Why subtract????
If the ability score is low then you have a negative modifier.
for example, when you make an attack roll with a sword, you roll a d20. then you add a modifier based on your strength modifier + proficiency if you have it. if your strength score results in a negative modifier, you subtract from the roll, but if it's positive, you add to it
My paladin has a 6 Dex so that's a -2 modifier to any Dex rolls, which includes ranged weapon attacks and Dex saving throws.
By having a low ability score. Please read this section on ability scores:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Ooooooooh
Waitā¦
So likeā¦if you have a 1 you need a -5 modifier to add up to 6?
Iām just guessing
Srry
If you have a 1 in a stat, then your modifier is indeed a -5. That means you subtract 5 from any d20 roll for that ability.
Don't guess. Read the section I linked.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
OHHHHH
So likeā¦I need to roll -5 for the ability I have
The modifier
No, you apply the modifier to your roll.
Here, watch this video on ability scores and modfiers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoV5iM7peOg&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=3
Say you're trying to pick someone's pocket. The DM asks you to roll a sleight of hand check, which is linked to Dexterity. You have a +2 to Dex. The DM thinks of a number for how difficult the task is; let's say 10 here. So you roll, adding your Dex bonus, so if you roll an 8, your total is a 10 (because of that +2). You would meet the number and so you succeed at your action!
Meet or beat.
MAN THATS CRAZYā¦
Please watch the videos I linked.
sure thing
Where is the list of the dyno commands? I'm kinda bad at explaining stuff
I meant like this
i guess the post doesn't have all of them, i'm not sure if there's another list that's more comprehensive though
?tag new
No tag new found.
?tag get new
No tag new found.
Ig ill ask a mod
This isn't the channel to ask about dyno commands.
So can I make a Paladin Dragonborn????
Oh cool
There are no official restrictions on race/class combos. Just check with your DM about whether all race options are present on the world they've created for your game.
Hmmm ok
This 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview of D&D https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
Afterwards, check out the resources that the otherās already recommended you read and #learn-to-play
You can add an ability from your BACKGROUND?!
Typical backgrounds currently give you proficiency in a few things(skills, tools, languages), some extra starting equipment, and usually a unique feature that's more about roleplaying flavor than actual mechanics. For example if you choose the Sailor background, you'll have an easier time finding passage on a ship, possibly for free.
DUDEEEE
THATS AMAZING
Dang that makes dnd SUPER unique
Iām so mad I havenāt tried to play it sooner
What if I wanted to make a wraith paladin??? Would i need to go to a specific game or what?
Try the reborn race and haunted one background
Link me to reborn race???
It's from Van Richton's Guide to Ravenloft and would require DM to approve of its use. Remember that the DM has final say on characters.
sent it
I donāt see it š
I sent it in a message to you
can you send that to me too?
So kinda like a Frankenstein?
can be, you choose how you come back
of course
I will addendum that to say make sure you clear any character aesthetics with your DM.
Iād argue 99% of aesthetics will not be an issue and the remaining 1% are due to theme conflict (I.e. trying to play sailor moon in a grimdark campaign)
Again, the DM may not allow reborn in their campaign setting.
Adventures can a few (game) hours, such as one-shots, or they can last (game) years.
Campaigns typically take place over multiple sessions, yes. But itās rare for said sessions to be on consecutive days
WHEW OK GOOD
My current campaign has been going on for almost 2.5 years now and will last another 2.5 years. We play about once a week (3 hour sessions).
In my experience invididual sessions last between 2-4 hours
Cuz I donāt wanna just go into a campaign and HAVE to stay on it for days or years
And have people wait on me
Campaigns are usually regularly scheduled, but from what I gather youād enjoy 1-shots more
Then you may want to look into an one-shot.
Ok one shotā¦
Got it
Can I use a die online or have to use a physical?
Because donāt have one
There are dice roller apps.
'Ello
If I can you know any digital dice apps I can use?
D&DBeyond has a dice roller integrated into their character sheets
how do I do d&d?

Most online games use some sort of VTT (virtual tabletop) that also have integrated dice rollers. Then thereās discord which also has various dice bots that can be integrated into servers
probably start with the players handbook and DMs guide for the main rules
I lied, do this
You don't need to buy the books! The Basic Rules are free.
thx ya'll
Ok questionā¦what dice do I NEED for to play
d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20
Thanks
not exactly necessary, but a percentile die, aka a d100 aaka 2d10s could also be useful
You'll see a lot of dice sets that contain four d6's, one each of d4, d8, d10, d12 and d20, as well as an additional d10 with double-digit numbers(used with the regular d10 for rolling percentages). The four d6's are becuase the most common way to roll your ability scores is to roll four d6's and keep the highest three results for each score. A set like this should be plenty for you to get started. You'll also see a lot of sets with a second d20, so you can roll both at the same time when you have Advantage or Disadvantage on a roll. There are lots of fancy-looking dice in a variety of materials, but for your first set I'd suggest focusing on dice that are easy to read.

Can someone explain to me about the books? I'm completely new to DND and I'm not sure how much I'm expected to know/read up on before I join a game. How do I get to read a book and do I need to spend money?
Check the links above.
You donāt need to buy the books at all, the basic rules are free and are linked in this channelās pins.
How can i tell how much hp someone should have?
Youād only need to buy the books if you wanted extra content (items, player options, etc such as the artificer class), extra lore stuff, etc
For player characters or monsters?
Monster HP has both averages and a roll set listed in the event you want to roll for their HP too
The PC roll their hp or use the average per hit dice.
For PCās:
- At level 1 their HP is equal to a max roll on their hit die + their con modifier
- For each level thereafter, they add one roll of their hit die + their con modifier (min 1) if you roll for HP. If you use averages, you use their average result listed in the class table + their con modifier (min 1)
For example, a fighter with 16 con:
Level 1: 10 (d10 hit die) +3 (con mod) = 13 HP
Level 2 using rolling: 13 + 1d10 + 3 = 17-26 HP depending on result
Level 2 using averages: 13 + 6 (average) + 3 = 22 HP
i believe i understand
thanks!
for monsters, Kobalds it says "5 (2d6 -2)"
does that mean i use 5 as their hp or do i have to roll it as well
The 5 hp is the mean average of 2d6 -2 (the -2 is their Con modifier)
That's really for the DM rather than players, but you can make their HP the average (5), or you could roll (2d6)-2.
anyone wanna play
O
like rn
Read #find-a-game.
As a player you shouldn't be looking at the monster statblocks.
very cool and epic i think ill just use the average to make it easy for myself thanks again
i am gonna be dm'ing for the first time thats why im making sure before i start haha
I recommend reading this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and watching the first handful of videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube. Those are a good intro to get going as a DM.
text-based games fil up like crazy i swear

Okok
I have a question
when you do your action what is the stuff that comes after that in your turn?
Not sure what stuff you mean, but on your turn you can move, perform an action, and perform a bonus action (if you have a feature granting you one).
These can be in any order.
Okay thatās exactly what I meant thank you
Oh and also
How does moving work I know that like you move this much in six second but is like each square 5 feet or?
You also have a reaction per round that you take in certain conditions and are able to used on any turn in the round.
Oh whatās a reaction
If using grid rules, it's 5 feet per square in the cardinal directions. But not all GMs use a grid. You will have a speed affected by your class/race.
Thank you
Reactions are described in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Reactions
The most widely used reaction is attack of opportunity. Generally speaking when a creature leaves your space you can take a swing at it as it leaves. That uses a reaction
Thank you
Thank you
are there any other classes other than wild magic sorcerer that use the wild magic table? lol
Wild magic barbarian, I believe.
Subclass in Tashaās Cauldron of Everything
You can always use a different wild magic table or make your own if you arenāt satisfied
Where do i even get to play in a dnd campaign.
Hmmm
heyyo all. I haven't played D&D in quite awhile, although i have a decent amount of experience under my belt. How difficult is it to find good campaigns here?
Check #find-a-game
Ayoo im entirely new to dnd but it seems like fun and i really wanna try it out! How does one start?
Your success rate is going to depend on how proactive you are and how highlight your compatibility with a DM and their campaign.

So a few questions.
how do spells and attacks work?
can i just assign any 1st spell to a lvl 1 character?
All these numbers are really confusing me, so many + , - and words lol, does anyone have a video that explains this?
Lastly how do i get my characters on a map?
from the dnd sources
Did you check out the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos linked above yet?
Hey can someone help me make a character because i have trouble learning how to do things with reading and videos
ya!
D&D is a game of rules so you can't avoid reading. I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Read Chapter 7 on ability scores and modifiers:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Read Chapter 10 on spells and spellcasting:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#WhatIsaSpell
What do you mean "how do i get my characters on a map?" Are you playing online or in person?
online, i see it says enable map and the videos ive seen has the characters on a map
Are you using roll20 for character sheets?
Hellooooo!! I'm new to dnd and want to join a homebrew campain, I'm literally yolo'ing this bcs what's the worst thing that could happen?? Where do I find new or ongoing campaigns here :33
thankiuu
It all depends on what your DM uses.
Then you decide which virtual tabletop (VTT) to use. owlbear.rodeo and Roll20 are free options (the former is light on features but easier to use).
Same!
the more i learn the more im starting to think that online dnd can be better than in person
Hello, I am a new player here. Can someone help me understand this skills' definition;
Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage
What does it mean? How to interpret this?
Itās a melee weapon attack, with a +3 total bonus to the attack roll, and it targets one creature within 5 ft. On a hit, it deals 1d6+1 bludgeoning damage. The 4 is the average of that roll, as a faster option
I see, so the +3 to hit there must be added to the attack roll of 1d20, am I correct?
Yes.
Yep
Thank you. Can someone pls tell me what "saving throws" are? And when to do them?
Theyāre basically the inverse of an attack roll. The target makes a roll against the attackerās target number
A common case would be dodging an explosion or resisting a poison
A feature will say when you need to make a saving throw
Saving throws typically represent your character's ability to avoid or resist specific dangers. A dragon's breath attack, a trap, certain spells.
You roll 1d20 and add your saving throw modifier to try and equal or beat the DC of the danger. On a success, the danger may have a reduced effect or be avoided altogether. The specific feature will say.
I see, so how do I determine my saving throw modifier?
They're based on your ability score modifiers. Each class also gets proficiency in two of them, adding their proficiency bonus on top.
Okay, let's say I was hit by a monster with poison, do I need to roll a saving throw to determine if I will be successfully poisoned by the attack? And what saving throw modifier do I add?
The specific ability will provide all that information
However in most cases a saving throw against a poison effect will be Constitution
I see. Thank you guys, this is helpful.
big question how does one play in general

Hello. As a newbie DM, any tips on how to make a good campaign for my friends to do? Shall I use a pre-made campaign or make a new one from friends' recommended setting?
I just wanna say, you guys are awesome people. Iām new here and I know more things than I knew about DND thanks for helping me! I still wanna know more but I just wanna say thisā¦thank you all for being so kind to me ^^
Every single one of you are awesome š¤©
(I said this on dnd discussion but I think itās the wrong place to say this)
(Not trying to spam I swear XD)
Ive never played D&D before, how do i create a character?
many ways but the most common way is on dnd beyond or roll20
(if dont own any books or something of the sort you wont have everything available to you)
Oh k, also ive seen some character sheets online and they look very confusing
i would recommed dicecloud but its very confusing
K ill try this, thanks
What are you wanting to make
You talking to me?
Yes
You mean the class?
should ask that lol
Yes what class
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=lqATfWSTGq6HoQ80 hereās a play list on making 4 of the classes in dndbeyond
dm me and i can help
K
Could someone help me figure out what moves or stuff i should use for a paladin?
Iām gonna be a paladin dragonborn
Iām gonna be a strong, durable and charismatic one
paladins are not known for there charisma (i think)
Well I wanna be a nice guy for my paladin
His oath is him killing demonsā¦he has a HATRED FOR DEMONS.
but heās also a nice guy
Heās neutral good
Iā¦can make him neutral good even if Iām a paladin right?
you can do whatever in that sense
Cool
Iām still trying to figure out the character sheetā¦how does the numbers work for the stats???
dndb?
Like I mean how do you know if the numbers I give it are too much???
Are we supposed to roll the stats or no???
depands on the dm
Well I have no dm right now
most (in my experance) is point buy
Point buy?
Not yet just getting him down
your up to abilities yes?
the various methods for ability score generation are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
If you do not have a DM at present, I'd recommend using the Standard array: (15,14,13,12,10,8).
It is easier to go back and do point buy or rolling (and possibly get those high numbers) than do them first and be disappointed when you have to change
Well Iām trying to figure out what abilities to give it but idk
you mentioned you are working on a paladin.. what abilities you want to be high or low are up to you, but the quick build recommends STRength (for your weapon attacks) and CHArisma (for your spells). https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#QuickBuild7
Silly q, is there a digital version of the character sheets? That you can edit on say a tablet / iPad?
dndb is good
How many abilities can I have????
Thank you kindly
Oh wait I level up to get them
yes and no
Explain?
hi just got to the server and dnd in general. Where should i start?
ill so you what i mean in dms
there are only ever six abilities: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma.
You can choose to increase those scores as you level, but it's not like at level 6 you suddenly get a whole new ability score to juggle.
As you level you get access to new or more powerful class features, spells, etc.. you can see what you get if you read through a class section. such as: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassFeatures7

for @rich girder ^
k thx
also, welcome to the server and the hobby! if you have questions, please do feel free to ask. Although it is helpful to do some reading/video watching before asking things, folks here are generally happy to give direction
please see the post 3 above yours for some introductory links on how to play.
To find a game you can check out the rules for using our channels in #find-a-game
pssst.. Is Dugeon Master's Vault a resource most DMs are chill with? I learned how to make characters back on OrcPub and I'm just barely grasping how to make sheets otherwise
@deft sigil is it necesary to memorize all that?
not memorize, no.. but going over it is helpful. People refer to the rules all the time. Very few of us have everything memorized.
I think using a pre-written short adventure or one-shot is best. For one, a campaign is a commitment, and it can fizzle out for a variety of reasons; not finishing it feels bad. But if you finish a pre-written short adventure or one-shot and folks still want to play, you can grab another short adventure. It's a way to get 'em hooked.
Also, if you're a new DM, juggling the running of the game and developing a storyline simultaneously is setting a more difficult task for yourself. A pre-written gives you a foundation, and you can always change the bits you don't like.
I've never heard of that resource until today, so I suspect it's not very common.
Ack okay. Thank you. I've been bouncing around Roll20 and whatnot for all the info to round up for DMV since it does require custom inputs for what I'm trying to do, but does a lot of the calculations in the background it seems, and hoboy I need that
but I am trying to use it as a bit of a stepping stool to making a Roll20/DDB sheet
Having had a glance at the DMV and reading between the lines of what you've said, I would caution you that showing up to a table with a homebrew character (not using previously approved sources) is not going to go down well with most DMs.
Oh my god no, I'm not trying to show up with a Homebrew, I'm waaay too new for that. I'm just trying to make a legacy Changeling Paladin with a Ruined background, and no resources have Changeling or Ruined as an option to pick from. So I've been manually entering things
I don't entirely understand how DDB works, and I can't figure out how to make a "custom" race so I can essentially just input the stats for a changeling manually (I don't think that's home brewing??) or how to buy a changeling? I'm giving R20 a shot and it's going okay so far, it's just a little more info than I was used to
May I send you a message?
By all means
Hello!
That's what I thought was happening, yeah. I was able to find the info online, But I couldn't use them or make a custom race input to copy/paste the stats myself. So I was going through DMV to make the sheets, but all with official info. I'm starting to get the hang of R20 though. Same process, I just have to do a little more digging myself. Thank you for being patient with me šāāļø
For discussing tools for D&D #third-party would be the place to go
Oh! Thank you
Good morning everyone
I have always wanted to play D&D but was not allowed to as a child and have never found any like minded people to play with, I know absolutely nothing about the game other than the basics and that D&D is the grandfather of almost every MMO game in existence. I'd love to find a group to learn and play with, I hope this is the right chat for this...

Like how to add items?
Did you use the option for starting equipment there?

I'm using that DND beyond (as another app fight club 5 etc....if I pick a paladin with the acolyte background I can pick 2x holy symbols?!?!?
Pick something else in place of one of them
Both the class and background offers a holy symbol as a starting equipment
You could have a plain one for work, and a fancy one for church.
Like a holy mullet...
Yo, does anyone have a party looking for a lvl 1 player ? I am a newcomer and oh boi do I need smn to explain the game and teach me how to do EVERYTHING ( sorry if wrong channel but i am searching both DM and Players so whole party ;-;)
Look in #looking-for-players there might be someone in there
k thanks
So, there is a lot of flexibility then
It's an option. Or you could say one you grew up with, and the other you got when you became a paladin.
Do half orcs have horns? And whats typically their skin color? Do they have pointy ears? Im making my first character im a bit lost lol help is greatly appreciated
"Half-orcs exhibit a blend of orcish and human characteristics, and their appearance varies widely. Grayish skin tones and prominent teeth are the most common shared elements among these folk."
Can anyone play and teach me d&d as we play

Hello! Me and my friend are new to D&D, and were trying to learn how to play the game.If someone help us to learn we will appriciate!
Is there anyway to use weapons like a pike, glaive, halberd etc as 1 handed with a shield off hand??
Hey im new to DnD and got tired of irl groups not going thru with doing sessions. I havent learned because everytime I find a group they break up or never wanna actually start and its killing my vibe on DnD. This is my last resort lol
Cast your gaze above for the full, free Basic Rules and useful videos to assist.

No worries man, lots of people here with the same story, if youre interested you can check the games here for something that fits your playstyle and timetable, and once you do just ask to join and its that easy. https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008
Other than that if you have any questions ping me.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it
hii im new and i kinda donāt know even know where to start other than creating a character sheet.
would anyone like to be friends and could
like me?
Iām in same boat except idek how todo a character sheet Iām brand new to dnd but Iāve wanted to get into it for years just never really had someone to teach me
Welcome both of you, if you want to go over how to make a character thats something we can do, other than that, if youre not sure how to play you first need to ask yourself what youre looking for in a game. Do you want hard combats to test the limits of your built? Do you want a story with your characters backstory complicating things for them? Both? And after that we can go over how to get started
where can i go to create a character? is there a online website or such?
Also iād love a story with my characters backstory, role playing is my passion haha
Is there someone to help me learn more of D&D?
Theres a couple ways, though a lot of the content must be either purchased or shared to you by your dm
Sure whats on your mind?
Well, I don't know to much on how to actually play
I usually just make things happen and such
When I'm DMing with my friend
Hmm I see, okay, well if youd all like I could bring up a game server and run through the basics and character creation with the three of you
Sounds good, Fizzy and Athena, you two interested as well?
Same
You as well?
Oh, yeah, I should probably make a character for this
We can go over all that
Unfortunately I am not able to join atm as Iām at work but tmr Iām able to as long as itās before 2:30
No worries
Grandmaster Dm may I dm you lol
of course
Hey! Just wondering where in the server I would apply for a DM for my friend group and maybe an extra person too if they want to bring a friend. None of us have that much experience but are very excited to try and learn to play!
Right over here, best of luck! https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1241960756858060881
Yes, Saw that but it says I dont have permission to type. Do I need to verify somehow? If so how could I go about doing so?
See #find-a-game for instructions on the lfg channels

Lemme make something verry clear for all of the new players here
DND is a verry dense information hobby
You cannot expect someone to do a 1 on 1 tutorial for each and every single new player
I advise you make ressearch of your own
theirs a lot of great content creators that will teach you all of the basics
Like Dungeon Dads,Jocat,DnD shorts,etc
Sure, I canāt play dm as I donāt know how but am trying to play some dnd
The core system is that you roll a d20 + ability modifier + proficiency if you have it against a difficulty class to hit, make a skill roll, or a saving throw to avoid an effect. Once you have that down, the rest of rules make more sense. I would always advise getting one of the starter kits, because they are designed to help new players and DM's ease into the game. You can also get some play experience at a lot of game stores where they hold games for new players.

No you can play and learn with the free basic rules

alrighty! thanks you!
I mean I am no experienced guy but I have played a few games, soo let me know if you have questions :DD
alr!
i might have one actually
so uhhh you see in dndbeyond, in the 4th section, Description. in character details, there's faith.. i don't understand what it means š
If your character follows a god or religion. If you aren't in a game with a DM yet, don't worry about it.
it doesn't!
The DM you play with will likely inform you of the gods in the world, so you can pick then, even if that means not following any specific deity.
alr i see, so i don't need to fill the faith section?
Nope. In fact, do be aware that you may need to change your character to fit the game you eventually join. Right now you're going through the process for practice.
also another question i got is : how long can a dragonborn live?
mhm alr!
That depends on the DM's setting, but in the Forgotten Realms, one of the primary settings for D&D, they live up to 80 years.
Aye! What's good everyone, I hope you're well this Saturday evening. I wanted to ask is anyone open to perhaps having a game with beginners? (such as myself)
sure!
i just joined :P making my character rn
Can i join

I'm still figuring that out lol, I believe we simply submit the form and wait. Somebody gon' accept it and I assume then we just iron out the details
I don't use the LFG channels, but my understanding is it should post nearly instantly. When you see an ad that interests you in any of the channels, you post in the attached thread or message the poster directly. Or you can post your own ad and wait to be contacted.
I recently posted a message here that highlights some options: #dnd-newcomers message

whats westmarch??
It's a server or large scale game where multiple DMs run games in the same world
andd how do I find a game for that??
Where are you lost?
Can you specify what you are having trouble with?
#looking-for-community has some but you can also check out places like Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums
alr!
i don't reaaaaally know how i'm supposed to join peoples in their games- everything seems full already :P idk where to start with anyone yknw-
where are you trying to find games.
Finding a game can be difficult as there's more players than DMs. The key is to keep your eye out and apply on games if you think they sound fun. You can check out 3rd party sites like Roll20 too.
alr-
Key is to not give up! š You'll find a good game!

:PPPP
Okay.
Have you reached out to posts in #looking-for-players that were posted more recently?
The 3 newests ones don't have many responses yet.
oh- didn't see the 3rd one, it sounds quite fun-
#looking-for-dm you can even make a post here
What can help make things easier is focus on matching availability over time zones.
i see
Yup, if people are available at the times you are, then wether it is morning for them and night shouldn't have much impact.
There are also many other options worth exploring.
- Can be be played online and in person
- Provide a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model let's people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Happy to help
Good luck!
I also recommend starting your search with adventures that are meant to be completed in a single session, known as one-shots.
These provide a great way for you play and learn what types of D&D games, play styles, and DMing styles you gravitate towards.
That way, when you search for a full campaign group, you'll know which campaigns are right for you.
alright!
how do you play
Check #learn-to-play as well as this channels pins, which have a link to the free basic rules as well as the Handbooker Helper video supplement
I mightāve found a good community to play D&D with!

Congrats on having a group as you get into the hobby.
For everyone new to the hobby, this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview of D&D https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
Afterwards, feel free check out the resources in the bot post above and #learn-to-play
If you have any questions on the things you have trouble understanding, feel free to ask.
hey
Thanks zero!
Welcome everyone who is getting into the hobby.
Happy to help.
Since your group is just getting started, these questions can help everyone involved figure what kind of campaign if best for the group.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next. )
