There are three pillars in D&D: Exploration, Combat, and Social.
D&D campaigns are made up of 3 main components:
-exploration
-dialogue
-combat
Usually campaigns will have all 3. A significant part of creating a character is their combat capabilities.
Combat is a key part of D&D — most of the rules are dedicated to combat while not much is dedicated to the social/RP aspect.
You don't have to fight, but as folks have said, there's usually at least some
D&D comes from a wargaming background so combat does feature prominently in it's DNA.
You can work around it but yes, lots of rules have a combat focus.
Early in D&D's history was dedicated more to Exploration and Combat (as Undyingnoob said, D&D grew from wargaming). It was only much later in 2E that the Social aspect (aka character development) played a more prominent part of the game.
Fair enough. I'll make it a point of learning combat mechanics
Here is a visual guide to combat on DMsguild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
It can be a useful tool as you are learning.
Thanks! I'll read it over.
If you search YouTube for “dnd travel interesting,” you’ll get a bunch of videos on this topic. Pointy Hat, for instance, posted one just yesterday!
Hey, would y’all want to join my campaign that I just created?
Use the LFG channels starting with #find-a-game!
I don’t know what to do in this game. Someone teach me.
I'm new to d&d, and there's so much I don't know about it that it seems really overwhelming to start. Can anyone give me tips on what I should do first? I have a couple of friends who want to play with me and some extremely basic knowledge of the game.
Start a campaign or atleast prepare to since my first one took up to a week
But it’s worth it
When I started, I spent 12 days planning before my first campaign
Relatable
how do I start a campaign
As a player or as a DM?
Both honestly
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But I think dm is way harder
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Since dm has more responsibility
DMing is difficult but so fun, Imo
There's much more work as DM than there is as a player.
Yeah
tysm
Yeah like world creating and maps and NPCs
True true
I haven't DMed in a while
I've done maybe five or six times, I would've done more but things just stopped working out
I'm trying to get a campaign going again, now that I have time again
Yeah, I have my server still, no players yet
I’ve been looking for a campaign
I’ll be the first does weird all might face
Please don't recruit outside of #looking-for-players
But back to something I said I think a Mha campaign would be something enjoyable if anyone is down to it
I'm new here, not used to these channels yet
Yes sir! tenya hands
Check id:browse and id:customize for the list of channels to use.
I’m just gonna see if any dms are open
Hello ❤️

ok
I will also do that because I just joined the server and I am new to dnd
ok im completely new but i love watching and learning about DnD but i have no clue where to start to learn how to ACTUALLY play, any tips?
After you've learned the rules and successfully made a character there really isnt any need to keep learning. Its time to rip the bandaid off and find a table to join
I have the feeling that any videos or articles explaining 'how' to play won't make much sense without the context gained by actually playing
ok thank you!!

When characters are roaming across a map, not in battle, does their movement speed come into effect? I’m trying to understand why all maps have a grid and if characters are supposed to movement along the grid like they do in combat
There is actually a table in the books to calculate movement on different maps. Tavel speed is different from characters movement speed. These are called travel paces and you can find more rulings for it in the player's handbook
thanks for the guidance. I see this now in the PHB.
basically brand new to dnd. ive seen alot of dnd content on yt, but never had a proper game lasting more than 1 session.
I know how to play, I just dont know how to play e.g. finding friends to play with, making my character etc'
You can get a basic character together with the links here (#dnd-newcomers message). Pick a race and class, use the standard array method for your ability scores, then come talk about your character in #character-discussion .
As to finding a game, check out the information in the following post.

Hey, im kind of new, been playing for a month or two...but i still don't know how some of the game works. My group and DM are also new, and we don't know what we're doing most of the time. Especially related to spells, like, how they work, what options are there, et cetera. If anyone could explain, that would be extremely appreciated.
have you read the rules covering spells?
I've watched a few videos, but i still don't get it
It might be best to read the rules themselves, though, what specifically don't you understand?
How to use them
Are you using any software for characters or do you have paper sheets?
Uhhh, we just saved the sheets to files so we can edit it, lol
But generally, you use the spell by declaring to your DM that you're gonna use a spell. If it's in combat, you need to use your action or bonus action, depending on what the spell specifies. If you're casting a cantrip you skip this step but if it's a levelled spell, you only have a limited number of casts per day, called spell slots. You mark off a spell slot of the necessary level and then proceed with whatever the spell effect is, described in the spell description.
That kinda makes sense, thx
Does that help in any way?
Thank you so much
Hi guys! I'm particularly very new to the game. I might ask seemingly random questions here and there till I find a game of my own to play, I get a lot of different answers from different scources, so I'm hoping this chat will possibly help me out a bit as I go along 🥲 hopefully it'll be nice talking and meeting you guys though! 😄
Hi! Welcome to the hobby!
im planning to dm for the first time and play dnd for the first time. im planning to run the Wild Sheep Chase campaign. i watched on youtube on how people ran the game, i just wonder how they get to stretch it to an hour? i read the story and it seemed pretty short to me with like, three phases. is there something im not getting?
welcome!
The text of the one-shot represents the tiniest fraction of the adventure
Generally speaking each scene can take a minimum of 30 minutes, being conservative
Three acts, each with typically 2 scenes, and you have 3 hours of play
You think this part of the quest will take only 5 minutes- talk to the NPC, get told the location of the artifact, go get it- but then they will spend 1 hour talking to the NPC, then among themselves, making the plan, and then suddenly that no name NPC that was just meant to pass on a clue now has a name, a family and tragic backstory.
And the plan now involves getting him and his old archeology buddies together for one last excursion.
ooohhhh
Other times you'll think 'This will take them about 30 mins at least to talk this- wait, no, why are they walking away?'
Each group can be different, based on playstyle- you'll end up getting a feel for your group.
That's about the metric I use. Combat that's more than a speedbump can double that.
Hello! I am starting as a dnd, and I am guessing if it’s legit to change stats of monsters, or creating new sub-classes? Pe: i want to create a weaker zombie and make ords instead of using regular zombies (level 1-3 campaing)
that's called homebrew, and it falls entirely outside the jurisdiction of the rules
Yes you can! DMs are permitted to adjust things as needed for the fun of the table.
I'd be careful with diving into homebrew (custom made things) for your D&D games until you've played it with the base rules for a bit - that way you can have a better feel for the game mechanics and how to balance things.

Hello
Hello
While salutations are very nice, this channel does have a specific purpose so we ask people stay on topic
Hay I'm new to DnD I just started out today and was looking for a game to help dip my toes into the game
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Um guys how do i use the #looking-for-dm bot
follow the instructions in #find-a-game
do i put the command in that channel?
in any channel where you can post, per the instructions
Oh yeah, thank you
what die do i need for dnd?
- The Basic Rules
- A character sheet; either PDF to print out or fill out on your computer, or a digital one such as on D&D Beyond
- Dice; either real dice or digital one using an app or website, again such as D&D Beyond
20, 12, 10, 8, 6, and 4 sided dice. If playing in person, you can purchase these as complete sets. Some dice get used far more than others, with the d20 being used for base gameplay
This is what your standard set of dice looks like
That's all you need for D&D
And there's plenty of dice rollers online or as a phone app that you can use!
You could also get a d100 for when you don't want to roll 2d10
That's not really a suggestion suitable for this channel
Also that wouldn't be 2d10, which means something else
A single die with 100 sides on it does not come in most standard dice packs. In fact, it would be quite difficult to find one, I think. If that is your preference, that's perfectly fine. But that's certainly not something a newcomer needs to pick one up before starting the game.

What does great weapon mean
A "great" weapon typically refers to a larger version of a weapon that requires two hands to use.
So like big swords or big hammers
“Great weapon” is not an actual game term, but rather something commonly used in ability names to refer to abilities that apply to heavy, two handed weapons. “Great Weapon Master” is the most common of these, but the weapons that feat actually applies to are not called “great weapons” mechanically
Pretty much! The standard weapon table has Greatclub, Greatsword, Greataxe...I think that's it? All essentially 2-handed versions of smaller weapons. Pretty much only a term applied to melee weapons, too
So like what is the rule Tiefling
Tiefling is the name of one of the playable races. IDK what you are asking by “what is the rule” for them.
Like do they have any ability
All the free information available for character building is in the Basic Rules linked in the post above
Read the Tiefling race in the free Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#Tiefling
Ill go read the basic rules then ill be back
could someone dm for me to help me learn the ropes?
You can check out the Basic Rules and some useful videos here (#dnd-newcomers message).
Why don't you give them a glance over, put together a sample character using the standard array method for your ability scores and head over to #character-discussion ?
alright thank you
Ok so i read most important stuff and what i didnt uderstand now i do a little.
I also made a character on dnd beyond.
So were do i go now

Are the spellbook cards a good investment for beginners? seems like a good way to learn things faster
You can create your own with cue cards.
It certainly doesn't hurt! It also depends which spell cards you get, as some can be more helpful than others
Spell cards are a useful tool for in person play, if you don't want to use digital tools, because they can help keep things organized and available for easy reference. But if you play online and use websites like D&D Beyond while playing, then it will probably be faster to look up your spells on there, which renders the cards moot
I need idea help for encounters for a level 4 party who just got a spelljammer, on the spot first time dming
If you need advice on DMing and encounter building, #dm-discussion would be the best place to ask
I've DMed for dozens and dozens of new players, and if you aren't using online resources to play the cards are some of the best things you can buy to make new players lives easier.
So im not a new player im just a new DM i have things planned out looked over the rules but 1 thing i still cant work out is stat blocks for npcs and how to work out a challenge rating not just for the npcs but also working out what challenge rating i need for my party badee on there level i have 6 level 5 players atm i have a dm friend of mine whos helping me however as a player of my session theres info i cant give him without leaking too much of whats to come can any dms help me? Please feel free to message me privetly as well

hello!
Welcome!
how are you?
Busy but good
ah, well have fun lol
The joys of being a moderator lol
But again welcome to the official D&D Discord server
If you're new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel
im not "new" just never played it lol
never could find a campaign
also my character i wanna make is a hybrid, so he has to be homebrewed
Well if you want to try and find a group to play with, give #find-a-game a read.
We have #looking-for-players which is DMs looking for players for their games and #looking-for-community which are other D&D servers that have different styles of D&D games.
You might also check with your local game/comic stores and see if they run in person games. They may have an active Adventurers League running as well.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:

Anyone used heroforge for making their unique model?
That would be a discussion for #dnd-minis or #third-party but yes, its a very popular tool.
Sorry, just trying to think of thinks for our newbie group, I've downloaded some character sheets, inventory etc, we have the new player guide books too
You can use HeroForge to create your characters' portraits.
i do

My regular board game group is going to play our first D&D session soon. As DM, should I hide monster stats and abilities from them? Just give slight hints as to what’s happening when I describe their attacks against monsters?
Pretty much. There's no reason for the players' characters to have detailed knowledge of their enemy’s capabilities. Use a couple of descriptive words. Maybe a monster at half HP is staggering, off-balance, clearly weakened.
Describing what the actions the monsters are taking as they do them is the norm. You can also describe other traits as they fucntion, such as a Troll's flesh stitching back together when its regeneration activates.
Typical hints that many DMs use are things like describing attacks as hitting more or less effectively than expected when the creature has vulnerability/resistance/immunity to that type of damage. Or describing a creature's remaining health in rough descriptive terms(usually half health is a good time to describe a creature as looking pretty beat up, as well as when something is on its last legs). Perhaps ask a character for an Insight or Medicine check to see if they notice anything specific about the creature's condition or behavior if it's not blatant.
I tend to use the monsters research table from Tasha’s cauldron of everything. The table covers different skill checks for different types of enemies. Then provide varying levels of success, where the higher the roll, the more they can figure out what a monster is capable of.
Silly q, is there a artisan tools kit that would help make arrows, repair bows etc???
Nothing specific but DM's could allow woodcarving or tinker tools be used to craft arrows potentially.
Ah so it's very open to interpretation then. I just don't want to get greedy n have all these "excuses" / reasons for having certain things
Might check in #dm-discussion and see how other DMs handle it.

I have an issue where I choose the human race, but the only feat I can select is grappler
You would need to own the books (or be in a campaign with content sharing enabled and access to those books) to access more feats beyond what's available in the free basic rules.
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
what would y’all say is the best class for a first game/beginner?
Whatever sounds the most interesting and fun to play for you.
While it is true that some classes are more complex than others, it’s generally more fun to learn a more complex class that you like than a trudge through a less complex class that you don’t
In general descriptive terms, what type of character do you want to be? Do you want to fight with weapons, with magic, a combo of both? Do you want to be a big talker? A sneak? A brute? A healer? None of the classes are SO complicated that a beginner can't enjoy them, but some may take a little more effort than others.
okay, thanks! i’ve already created a few characters while waiting to join a party i just thought i’d ask if there’s a strategy i should go for
Generally martial classes such as the fighter, monk, and barbarian are recommended because they are rather straight forward and don't require learning about magic in order to play.
If you want to dip into magic, Rangers, Artificers, and Paladins are quite effective with weapons while also having the option to use spells as desired.
For spellcasters, I tend to recommend Clerics as they have access to a variety of damage, utility, and support spells.
What helps is that at each long rest, you can choose what cleric spells you have ready for each day, allowing you to experiement with different spells to help determine your preference.
cool thanks!!
I'm jealous, I need to join my first campaign soon
sorry, i’ve got lots of questions 😅 but what apps/websites are used to play? i know and have discord and dnd beyond but that’s it.
Perfectly fine to ask questions, that what this channel is for.
As for the answer to your question, it depends are you referring to in person online?
online
Generally people play online through a virtual table top, digital environment, an online platform that lets you interact with maps, tokens, and dice rolls.
The ones you'll hear about are
- Roll20
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Foundry
- Fantasy Grounds
- Alchemy RPG
- Maps by dnd beyond
Typically the one you'll end up using is going to depend on what suits your group's needs.
What quite a few people do is use an extension called beyond20, which lets you send your rolls from your dnd beyond character sheet to the virtual tabletop that you are using.
And some DMs don’t use a virtual tabletop. You’ll likely learn what tools the table uses when you join a session.
okay, thank you so much for all your help!
If your group uses DND Beyond for player sheets do you think it's worth getting some of the books on sale right now?
If you already have access to them through other players in your DDB campaign, then probably not
hi, I'm new to D&D, I already have a character in DDB, but what do I do next??
Well, I can explain it incomprehensibly, but I just figured out how to make my character
I own the player hand guide physical is there a way I can unlock the stuff from it onto beyond without paying or content sharing?
Question?
Hello?
That are saving throws
how can I play with other players and Russians are accepted here? I just decided to try what is D&D? I just made my first character, but I didn't understand what to do next.😓
I should keep world building and the put it into one comprehensive google doc lol :)
WHATWHAT?
I’m not sure, just rambling to be honest
Do you understand how dnd works yet?
almost 50/50 I'm starting to learn what D&D is. I already have a ready-made character in DDB
yoooo
Hello!
Its up to you. You can find a game, talk to other dnd players, etc
im new to dnd and want to play a game with my friends \and they assigned me to be gm
am i cooked?
I don’t even know how to play dnd and I’m deep into world building lol
is gm and dm the same thing
You like Rayquaza
yes
my favorite legendary pokemon
what websites do you guys use to play
i saw one called roll20 and started using that
Mine is Zacian & second is Rayquaza
Zacian is cool but he's so OP in comp so i started to hate him
ironic coming from a ray fan but you know
just what kind of game do I just not know how to find the players to start??
His attack is OP but defence is low
Do you want to dm or be a player
I‘ve noticed something, but there isn’t a lot of sci fi dnd compared to fantasy huh
You can include sci fi if you dm i think
he's fast as shit so low defence doesnt matter fr
Gotcha, that’s what I’m doing and it’s a lot of fun!
player
Its something new i like it
Thank you!
ok
Glad to help
to be honest, I'm embarrassed, I'm just a creative person and I want to try for the first time what D&D isis
Its ok im also a very creative person and plus we all have bin there
I say in advance I don't have any but micro so as not to talk
I would like help so I can play my first dnd game 🙂
What kind of help do you need?
I don't need help no more I just read the past messages
why do different classes have different dice?
Because that's how they're designed?
I mean what purpose do they serve?
Hit dice determines your hit points and how much you can heal during a short rest
in what situations are they used
ok thanks
what equipment is necessary to start playing dnd (with 4 friends)?
Each class has starting equipment that they can select from. Or gold that the player can use to buy equipment. Pick one or the other unless your DM provides other options
I think they mean IRL equipment
- The Basic Rules
- A character sheet; either PDF to print out or fill out on your computer, or a digital one such as on D&D Beyond
- Dice; either real dice or digital one using an app or website, again such as D&D Beyond
What do i need to know when im playing a game as dungeon master for the first time?
- Safety first, fun second, everything else third - Focus on making sure your game has the right priorities
- Communication is key - ask your players questions, get feedback, and listen to what they have to say
- Reference don't memorise - you don't need to learn the rules by heart, just look them up as you play
- Rulings over rules - if you have a situation where you don't know the rule, feel confident to make a ruling under the caveat you'll look the rule up later
- You will mess things up, it will not matter
What do you mean by 'implement'?
how can i give my players items and new magic spells without making them overpowered
and which items should i use?
Maybe start with a published adventure which will tell you what items to give out
where can i find published adventures?
👍
Anyone have a link to the free adventures on Beyond?

Can we have a channel that people play dnd ?
You can make a server feature request here: #frequently-asked-questions message
But based on our many years of experience of running this server (first as DnDbeyond and now as the official D&D server) and as we are the official D&D server and don't want to convey that somehow our games here are more official than other D&D games, we will likely not be opening up and creating channels for folks to play D&D on this server. Also would be a moderation headache as our server rules would also apply to those game channels.
No no actually i asked about playing 2 days ago and some one said first u need to learn the game but its not in my language but anyway i entered links and read some rules but it was toooo much 🙂
He said after learning we add u to the playing channel where u can play
But i think by seeing others playing maybe i could learn the game better
You're still asking for a new channel, that would be a feedback ticket, not a question to ask here
I’d suggest searching YouTube for “D&D liveplay” or checking Twitch for D&D streams if you’re looking to see how others play D&D
New to DnD, was about to purchase the players handbook... but will there be a new handbook for 2024 or?
There will be yes. You can choose to buy either or both, but the new PHB is planned to be released September 17th.
I would recommend purchasing only one. They are compatible and you can use either to play 5e, but the 2024 will be the one most updated to the current rule designs.
was wondering if anyone had any advice on finding a group to play dnd with? im a total beginner- my only experience being baldur's gate 3 lol
You can look at #find-a-game to find something here or `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide for advice for other places
ty :)
Hello from Poland, just bought my first DnD set (Essentials Kit) and I'm slowly learning the rules to start my first campaign. I actually got it as a gift for my gf and I'll be DMing for her so I have a lot to learn. Nice to know there is an official online community that can help if any questions arise 🫡
Hi I'm playing as a silver dragonborn bard, how can I make as overpowered as possible (without it being too broken) in the early levels? Currently lvl1 playing dragon's heist
Overpowered means broken
Very powerful* hahah
Depending on how "powerful" you're going for, you want either #character-discussion or #optimization
Basically kinda on the edge of being broken, but not like a coffelock or stuff like that
Kk ty

Hello im new to dnd im playing with irl friends im level 4 currently and i wanted to ask if somone wants to theory craft my character together
I took rague level 1 and i wanted to grab beserk 4 next with the totem tree/dual wield feat to dual wield rapiers
And then level 11 fighter as battlemaster do you think that be good?
Im forcing sneak attacks with reckless attacks
that is impossible lol and also not very strong
berserker and totem warrior are both barbarian subclases and you canonly have a single subclass
additionally with only a single level in rogue your sneak attack will be 1d6
and youc ant dual wield rapiers as they arent liight
I meant barbarian and typed berserker
I can with dual wield wepon proficency from fighter
no?
That's not what the dual-wielding fighting style does
the two weapon fighting style simply adds your ability score modifier to the damage rolls of your off hand attack
The dual wielder feat (not the fighting style) bypasses that. I would say that this discussion is probably best for #character-discussion or even #optimization
Doesnt it say i may dual wield non light?
the feat does not the fighting style
You're thinking of the dual-wielder feat
Okay
I use bouth but lets swap channel if this one is wrong
kk
Hey, new and kinda lost here... I wanted to ask/know how do people normally do tronco get a good token and images of their character to play
I saw some people don't liking when you use a IA promp so I wanted to learn how to get a good token and image without having ti pay a commission.
Im also new and ive always wanted to get into D&D but never had groups to play with, Im pretty inept when it comes to knowing what to do or how to do anything. Anybody willing to help?
Also kinda lost in this huge server. Trying to learn what everything do.

Long as you keep an eye out to avoid AI art, nothing really stops you from finding a suitable image with a search and putting it through a token maker. There are plenty of free websites out there that can help with that step.
@dusk shale I'm in a similar position, what I'm doing is throwing my questions into Google and trying to find a first fable. I found one and I'm already playing, they taught me somethings in the practice others I learned reading the resources here in the community.
@wild onyx token maker like this site to help make tokens?
im definitly a hands on learner when it comes to things and my friend recomended looking here for a Campaign to join to help learn and to get into it.
Check out the links in the Dyno post just above. The Basic Rules have everything you need to get started, the videos can help if you prefer to get your information that way, and if you have any specific questions feel free to ask here.
You've not actually linked anything there, but a quick search gives me Token Stamp 2 which will do fine.
You don't absolutely need a token, just so long as you have a bit of character art or something to represent your character that you can clip into a square thumbnail.
hello
Just don't use any IA prompt correct?
@storm comet hello.
It's not preferred, no. AI driven art has a number of issues.
Welcome! Check out the info in the pinned messages here and read #learn-to-play. Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in an appropriate channel.
What kind of issues?
Using others art/work without permission or license
Anyhow this server is not for AI discussion (and we don’t allow AI generated work to be posted here)
If you want to make your own, you could use a MMO or other video game, or Hero Forge. Even a doll-maker would do if it has the options you want.
If im in an ongoing campaing and dm doesnt havte a dlc and i as the player buy it am i allowed to use the included subclass then?
Ask your DM
That’s a discussion for you and your play group to decide
Also generally speaking game options in D&D aren't called "dlc", that might confuse some people
@echo kelp and@wild onyx thanks for clarification!
Haha my bad
They have it lol dm made an extra campaign for me so i can look at skills but some content isnt shared in the test one
So question was obsolete
hello?
hihiii
welcome

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
and what do i do after creating a character sheet?

If you've read the basic rules and feel like you know how to play, then the next step is finding a group! You can use the link above to get started here on this server.
I am interested in playing dnd but I feel like I’m going to be overwhelmed by all the information is there anything I can do to not feel overwhelmed and indecisive

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Skim over the choices for race and class. Write down one of each that you might want to try.
Look at the section about ability scores. Use this set of numbers (in any order) for your character's scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Your class will tell you what the most important one is.
Then you pick a few options from short lists for your starting skills and equipment and presto! A character.
Hey everyone im a DM. new at that. but i have a question and need some help.
my friend and his wife are gunna play dnd but he is adamant on starting at level 5.
i agreed but i also have a idea of taking the power or levels away from them. (like becoming a soul or a ghost for a bit kinda thing like loosing consciousness but not dieing and just loosing the power and starting at level 1 for a bit. then gaining strength to 5 again... ) though i have no idea how to achieve this and then after this im trying to start Curse of Strahd... any help?
good idea
bad idea? '
You're the DM, you decide what level the PCs to start off at.
What's the point of having them at level 5 but turn around and take levels away from them? This is going to lead to resentment and drama with your players.
You're a new DM, don't homebrew things to try to "balance" the PCs being at level 5 because one player insists on it — because you lack experience your homebrew may imbalance the game even more than if you had just had them start off at lower levels.
Lastly if you're a new DM, I DO NOT recommend you DM Curse of Strahd as your first adventure. It is not geared for new DMs.
i see
Please head on over to #dm-discussion for more DMing advice.
is there a way to run curse of strahd at level 5 ? or is it a lot of work to change structure?
oh
Again, I DO NOT recommend you DM Curse of Strahd as your first adventure. It is not geared for new DMs.
There are better adventures that were written for new players and DMs in mind, like the Starter Set's Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
Get some experience on how DMing works before you get yourself into something deep that you may not know how to get out of.
ok thanks Oldman
There's always a group out there for Strahd. Get your legs under you first, though.
If you bought CoS, it's not a waste. You just have to wait a bit longer until you feel confident you can handle it.
Anyway, #dm-discussion is the proper channel for DMing advice, not here.
like iv dm'd a little with my two parents wife friend and there friend like 3 years ago before i had a kid then i had to stop playing no time. but now im commited to a sunday game of dnd every week. but the times if tried to dm with him , hes stubborn and hard to be like if you roll a 1.. its a crit fail.. even if you got advantage kinda thing?
ok sorry
Just start at Level 3 as a compromise. Most campaigns do a Level 3 start. Level 1 is terrible
we are starting our campaing and the first one for me and we start at lvl 1, do you think its gonna be difficult? he gave us a little snip on what we are getting into "Gentlemen, here is a small little blurb about where you're starting to you an idea of what you'll be stepping into:
The Black Triangle; a place of illegal trade, dark secrets, and darker people. Grimy water splashes against dark rocky islands as all manner of humanoids go about their questionable business. A pirate city far away from the reaches of any nation where anything and anyone can be bought. A place of moral turmoil but nautical serenity; dark skies and stormy seas cycle around the archipelago insure only the most skilled sailors, the most determined of adventurers, or the biggest of ships can reach it.
But today, an even darker shadow looms over top of the Black Triangle. A singular airship bearing the name Hydra, made from the hulls of smaller Githyanki airships welded together by the expert hands of some mad shipwright, sits docked at the tallest island. Every time this ship comes a quiet settles over the islands. Even the ruthless and hardened inhabitants of the Black Triangle regard this ship and its passengers with suspicion and fear. What purpose does this ship or its masters serve? None know and none dare ask, happily taking the wealth this ship will pay them for well, whatever."
our party is 5 people
we are using e5 edition
"level 1 is terrible" only applies for veteran players. And that's not even really always true. But if you're new to the game, starting off at level 1 is a good thing. Level 1 and level 2 function as basically tutorials for the rest of the game. Its ok to skip those levels if you know what you're doing, but as a newcomer its good to have that on ramp. Plus, those levels have a certain charm to them that can make it appealing even for some veterans
That's just a long way of saying, don't worry about any of that and enjoy your first session!
also, the majority of pirates are supposedly from astral plain whatever that means
Do you have a question about D&D. You are relaying the setting of the adventure and that's not really relevant to what this channel is for.
no
so i cant ask about dnd in dnd newcomers as a newcomer but instead in dnd discussion? alright ill do that i guess
#dnd-newcomers is to ask about the question about the basic rules of DnD. #dnd-discussion is for everything else.
This channel is about learning the basics of the game. The rules, how to use a character sheet, what your stats mean, that kinda stuff. If you want to discuss the specifics of your campaign and its setting, that's less of a "newcomers" discussion and more of a general one
Check the channel description
This is a really active server, so it's important to keep the channels clean
the dm explained mostly everything about the character sheet for me so im fine on that front
i still think i could do better though
it got quite confusing at first
Do better at what exactly?
Great! Well if you do have any questions about that kinda thing, we're more than happy to help.
like adding spells or items
we are not playing on paper btw
What class are you playing currently?
we are using roll20
What are you using? Foundry? R20?
rouge
i think it'd be better to start the first campaing as a rouge since they arent squishy casters
Fair call
I started a campaign
Congrats! I hope you have fun, and if you have any questions let me know
Rogues don't have any spells at level one, so you don't have to worry about that for now.
actually i do have one, he gave us a lvl 1 feat
I will I just hope that people would like to join
everyone got a mark of something but im a special case and i could choose something else
Ohh nice, what did you pick?
If you're searching for players to play with go check out #find-a-game
moment
ok tysm
i picked Telepathic for few reasons
I need help understanding how encounters are set up
As a DM? Then head on over to #dm-discussion
As a player or a DM?
my character kinda cant talk, and it gives "Detect Thoughts" so it will be quite useful for a rouge i imagine
The basics are you take the number of PCs in the party and their level, and you use that information to determine how many monsters you should pick for an encounter of a given difficulty
Honestly both. I went in d&d beyond and all my friends want to start playing. I want to start us off on Frozen Sick because we can go from lvl 1 or lvl 3. But I have no clue where to start. DM or player
It's not really a basics thing, there's a fair bit of nuance. #dm-discussion is indeed the best place to ask
Heard, thank you
You generally want to pick if you're going to be DM or player, because their very different roles
Heard. I got the dm manual and the player manual

outside of this discord. any good ways to join an online dnd group?
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online.
Besides my guide above, there are a bunch of Discord servers in this vein, either by prominent D&D YouTube folks or just search dnd/lfg/tabletop/d&d.
thank you 😌
thanks. I spent wayyyy too long trying to figure out why lfg would be a tag x D
I want to get into dnd and I was wondering if there’s a cheaper alternative to the players handbook
Yep, the basic rules
They're free
Thanks
I would like to join a dnd session anyone got spots open?
Check #find-a-game
how to find an IRL dnd group?? that has at least one experienced player
Look local. Gaming stores, libraries, board game cafes.
Hi, I'm new to D&D but I think I have the gist of it. After looking through the yt clips, trying the tutorial and reading. This is exciting tbh 😄
Adding on to Mr Smith, you can use digital tools to look local: Facebook, Reddit, MeetUp, etc.
Surely there are people local to me here though lol
Ahh Reddit is a good one thank you
Possibly. And in case you need to hear it, please bear your own safety in mind when sharing personally identifying information about yourself with strangers.
😂
I'm thinking of slowly delving into becoming a dungeon master. But imma start of as a player. And learn by watching pros at work you know
Hello! Again lol
Fair enough that's what im doing too
Seems very complicated though
It is :/
But as I learned it takes alot of imagination. And thinking on the spot. And luckly I do have an excess of that part 🙂
Nice! What world are you building/planning :O
@willow salmon Hope your journey goes well 🙂
Thank you!!
Welp. Not started yet. But oh boy do I have some ideas. But I want to first see a couple rounds played with a good DM
Ohhhh alright alright
Rn I'm merly running on dreams and hopes 😂
Welp hope it goes well for us both. So do you think it's possible to learn from professionals here?
While watching them set up and play
?
Its probably possible
I'm still new to dnd
Yh me to. That's why my plan was to watch pro's in action. Best way to learn is on field. Though I watched all the clips. Read all and even played the toturial. The best way to learn is still hands on to watch a proof DM at work. Both set up and during play. I don't think partaking is important in my case. I'm just want to learn 😂
Oh 100%, im still world building right now and its going well but I need character plot lol
Hello
So would you join me on aside quest to find a pro DM?
Hi 🙂
How do I join a campaign
Indeed! Plus I need friends lol😭
Not to sure about that. I think you most make a group. And friends you trust first
Than go from there
I see
That is the hard part I reckon
Agreed
Yeah I joined bc my friends are busy
I came here to find a community :3
Same
But it seems like the pros stick to themselves and noobs to themselves 😂
Dang lmao
Yeahhhh :P
Sadly
I've played 2 campaigns so I'm pretty new lol
Just joined a ongoing chat. And ohh boy did it seem like they spoke another language entirely. Kinda awkward to bud in HAHA
Yeahhh
I kinda stick to here
Here seems like the place to be
Welcome, new folks. To be clear, this isn't so much a general chat for newcomers as it is a place to ask questions about the basics of the game!
I legit don't know how to break the ice hahahaha. For the first time. I'm normally a social bird. But in this world I'm like a noob out of his element
🤣 haha
You can just watch the conversations and jump in when you feel you have something to say, whatever that may be.
I try but its like a different language
That's likely going to be true any time you join a new community. Eventually, you'll pick up on things, and that process will be faster if you engage. You don't learn a language by just observing; you need to immerse a little too.
We did the toturial and all. We still a bit to noobish
Why 😭 we should all help each other 💔
Yeah :/
Doing the demo is a good start. You can also check out the Handbooker Helper videos, read the Basic Rules, and/or read through the material in #learn-to-play!
Sadly cuz we the noobs don't speak the tounge of D&D yet
Another question how do we identify players in the same region.
That's what I've been wondering too
A lot of the games advertised in the LFG section are online, so you can search for timezones, but if you're looking for in-person games, you're probably better off using other tools!
What time zone are you in?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Yeah

I do to, and when I did play my ex would DM but obviously their my ex so yeahhhh kinda lost the spirit to play dnd for a bit
And all
GMT 🙂 wbu
I'm PST
And where to find fellow players lol. Most be Tha hardest part
Okay folks - let's keep tha channel clear for it's intended topic which is to help new to D&D folks get started with understanding core game rules and mechanics
If you don't feel confident enough to join a game via the instructions in #find-a-game, then maybe you ought to check out the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab). A lot of the events during the VWs are geared toward new folks.
That's a great idea
Yh I'm definitely not confident enough to join the big leagues yet lol
I'd say there are no leagues, but do what you're comfortable with! With the caveat that sometimes you need to push past your comfort zone just a smidge.
Yh ik. It's just that I'm to noobish to join the big leagues now. I would rather want to learn before even thinking about that haha. Learning while watching games is a great way to do it
You can find a massive archive of games on Twitch and YouTube if you wanna jumpstart your learning process now!
I’m new to dnd does anyone know of any beginner friendly campaigns coming up?
Now that's amazing 🤩
Check #find-a-game
Thank you a bunch
Happy adventuring!
You to 🙂
Do people use dnd beyond characters I made an online one but I don’t know what to do now
Do you know the rules, at least generally?
Sorry I thought that is what we where doing. I'm a new player who wants to learn. My bad if we did it wrong
Yup
I watched like one video of dnd and I’m intrigued but not exactly
Basics
You should read the Basic Rules and/or the material in #learn-to-play. Once you've got a good grasp of the game's flow, you could try to #find-a-game by following the instructions in that channel.
Every group is different - typically the DM and players will decide what tools they'll use for playing D&D.
But all that's required would be:
- Character sheets (or some way of tracking character info)
- D&D rules (free basic rules or additional D&D books)
- Dice (digital or physical)
- a way to communicate (either playing in person or over voice call or play by post (text-based game))
Would not voice call be ideal in online situation?
It depends - sometimes folks schedules really don't align and play by post (text-only) games can be a solution for that.
Some folks use text for various reasons. Nothing wrong with that; it's just another form of play.
Oh I see
Yh that's fair. I just imagining it be about more emersive or what you call it lol
But each to their own taste ofc
I sorta know the rules now a lot to remember though I would need a welcoming group to get me to grips properly
Same here
Yeah - that about sums up every D&D group/table.
Some play hardcore rules as written, some are more lax and let almost anything go, some don't use homebrew (not official content), others allow almost anything, some D&D games don't have a lot of dice rolling and focus more on narrative storytelling, some D&D games are more grittier, some are silly, some groups use all sorts of tools like Virtual Tabletops, video backgrounds, dressup and voice acting... just depends on the group and what they enjoy.
Sounds like so much fun 😊
I dunno about others but it was actually stranger things that’s triggered my intrigue for dnd.
For me it goes a bit further back haha but about the same. It was a movie, series or such
Yeah saw the cast playing it on a yt video and was like ooh this seems fun
Same I’m glad I’m not the only new person round here
very few groups will allow strangers as spectators, but there are plenty of games that get streamed live on youtube or twitch
Oh there are plenty buddy. 2 recently arrived and went away
I had I feeling that would be the case
Check for DMs looking for players in #looking-for-players or even check other D&D Discord servers in #looking-for-community that may have pickup D&D games or even one-shots (simple single session or smaller scoped games)
Watching in on a game is generally unlikely (D&D is a social game and most folks don't really enjoy strangers watching them lol)
Could also look upd D&D liveplay games on YouTube or Twitch and watch folks playing that way
Is critical role not a huge yt channel dedicated to dnd?
Yes - Critical Roll is a fairly large show that has a popular D&D game they stream
critical role is the most popular live dnd show, yes
#critical-role-spoilers channel is here for folks to discuss the show
Yeah I also don’t know if my character is any good either 😂
Feel free to share it in #character-discussion - folsk can provide suggestions and feedback
Oh dw. If you have a character. You already are on your way. I don't so DW 😂
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/125825125 that’s my character i went on what i thought was cool tbh
Yeah 😂 we’ll learn together
May want to remove the magic items until/unless the DM grants them. Start with just the basic starting equipment for your class.
Cool 👌
Oh cuz every game is different and allows different tools right?
Correct
Nice. See I'm learning. Just backwards
And starting out of the gate with rare magic items would make your character a bit OP compared to other players
Hahahaha
I might watch some critical see how dnd plays but critical have their own unique rules and lore right?
What formats do DMs use is there capabilities for mobile users
Same here
Yeah - critical roll can be fun to watch and learn some ideas about D&D but it's very much designed for entertainment first and shouldn't be used solely as a guide on how to play D&D.
It can also lead to unreasonable expectations of how your D&D games should play.
Yep every game has some rules specific to that DM
I think
Many times yes - different D&D games may implement different homebrew rules for their game/table.
Homebrew is rules and items that are not from the official rules.
But the basics are still important. So waching the stream might still teach you the basics
I think
Yeah - it can give you an idea of the core game mechanics and basic rules like how to make an ability check or an attack roll. Or how to run combat.
Nice 🙂👍
You may like Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim as that stays fairly close to the core basic rules (at least the early seasons). They do introduce homebrew monsters and other things due to the campaign setting but it's not quite as deep changes/additions as Critical Roll.
I see, imma check it out. Thank you so much for all the help:)
Yeah thankyou
Heya! New to DnD, but understand the premise. I love improv so I’m dying to get into it and have even written characters for it but I am struggling to find groups of people who play it near me and no friends are interested. Any advice?

Whats the premise about? :O
Improv-ing insane people :D
D&D being a collaborative storytelling game, wherein a DM guides player(s) through a shared story with events playing out through player/DM choice & the outcome of dice rolls
Oooooo ok ok! :D
Hello server :>
Typically, how you try to find a group will impact your level of success. A common pitfall newcomers fall into is making a looking for dm post and waiting for people people come to them. As it stands, a proactive approach will yield better results.
D&D is a team-based game where players control heroes on an adventure led by a Dungeon Master (DM). Players decide their characters' actions, while the DM manages the world and non-player characters (NPCs) to respond to those actions.
Ohhh ok :O

Cool! :)
can i dm somone and ask some questions?
Why not ask here? The channel is here to answer questions from new D&D players.
because of the stupid timer lol
But essentially, I am trying to play my first game, my friends decided I should be the gm but im kinda lost on how to do that
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Are there any good free options to get my feet wet before dropping an arm and leg on literature
I plan on using online
roll20 is what someone suggested me
The two bot posts above has some great resources to help you get started.
For people new players to the game and those new to DMing, it's recommend you start with a pre-written adventure.
Ideally one that is designed to be completed in a single session, known as a one-shot.
Dnd beyond offers one for free here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/itsi/intro-to-stormwreck-isle
As for DMing itself, here is a quick visual guide to combat here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
And before I forget, I recommend printing or making your own DM screen, which is just something physical you can have on hand that references the basics of the game and any rule's that you'd like to have easy access to.
i see
Can someone be friends with me?
So should i even use one of those online game things
There are many virtual table tops out there.
I recommend shopping around and picking one that is right for you.
They all have their pros and cons.
This server is for discussing D&D - and hopefuly you will make some friends! But please don't solicit for sending/receiving Discord friend requests like this. Thanks!
alright
Hi

Heya gang, just joined a short while ago
Been meaning to get into D&D again, haven't played in forever so I've pretty much forgotten everything. Managed to snag the player and DM books as well as the monster manual, plus a shiny new set of dice.

How do you become a adventure league dm
To DM for AL literally all you have to do is run AL legal adventures for AL legal characters by AL rules
You can also run hardcovers, as long as you follow the AL rules for them (and note that not every adventure on DMsGuild is AL legal)
But yeah, whether you decide to charge is separate from the game being AL or not
when making characters, does it matter if you add extra/wondrous inventory items before you use the character?
If it's for an actual game, you'd need to get DM approval
But if you're just making practice characters, add whatever you want
okey
Im a new dm. Can i have some tips please
Head on over to #dm-discussion and we can give you DMing advice.
who wants my dm name
if you wanted to play dnd online , how do you go about doing that ?
#learn-to-play there’s a link in here about playing online
Hey im quite new to dnd and wanted to ask if anyone would have some tips to get started?
- Read the Basic Rules. Not the whole thing, just the sections on making a character, using ability scores, and combat are good starting points
- Try your hand at making a character
- Check out a free adventure, such as Intro to Stormwreck Isle on D&D Beyond
- Look for a game in our game finding channels, you can find info on using them in #find-a-game
hi, im new to dnd. I have formed a group with some of my buddies but have no idea where or how to start playing dnd, im not sure what i need or how to get it, i would also like some pointers on some good ways of doing character sheets digitally. ALSO how do i find out what stats/mods/saves etc goblins are good at, as I wish to play one.
Thanks i will be doing that
As above with what Davyd said, the basic rules are free and linked in his message. Also check out #learn-to-play
Online character sheets are most popularly handled via D&DBeyond.
As for goblins, they're not part of the free basic rules but you can get access to them as a player race if you buy any of 4 sourcebooks (Eberron: Rising from the Last War, Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica, Volo's Guide to Monsters, or Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse). Of those 4 I recommend buying MPMM. In addition, goblins like most races aren't inherently inclined to any single stat. They also don't get any racial skill proficiencies. Your saves & important stats are instead dependent on what class you choose. A goblin fighter wielding a greatsword would likely want high strength and constitution, for example, while a goblin wizard would want intelligence.
thx so much :)
why cant i be a goblin in d&d beyond character creation?
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Anything above and beyond the free basic rules requires someone owns the book to unlock those options.
which book would i need for goblins?
You would want Monsters of the Multiverse: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/motm
Yeah the folks who created the books, artwork, statblocks and everyone that supports them do want to get paid for their work... 😉
You could alos join a DnDBeyond campaign that has content sharing enabled and if someone in that campaign has the book, the content would be shared with everyone in that camapign.
oooooooooo
Or you can use the DnDBeyond homebrew tools to recreate content that you own in physical books (do not publish that homebrew - unpublished homebrew can still be used by you and folks in your DnDBeyond campaign)
this is hard, how do i make homebrew content (im sorry, i suck at this stuff)
You can go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/my-creations and use the "Create A..." button to create a homebrew thing. You can even use an existing thing to base your homebrew off of.
That said I unfortunately do not have time to walk through all the intracacies of using the homebrew creation tools.
all good
You can check with folks in #homebrew and for techinical questions you can ask in #ddb-support but yeah, using the homebrew tools is getting a bit beyond scope for this channel.
What races and classes are included in the Player's Handbook? Also I saw that a new edition is being published soon, so I guess it makes no sense to buy the current one at this point?
The new revised rules are being designed to be compatible with the current rules.
All classes except Artificer are part of the free Basic Rules, the Player's Handbook does add several subclasses
The same is true of races; all those found in the Player's Handbook are in the Basic Rules for free, it's just some subraces that aren't
There is not a new edition coming, it is still very much D&D 5th edition
What is coming are new versions of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual that are compatible with all existing D&D 5th edition books, including the current versions of the new books
Great, thanks!
Question on Surprise
Basic rules states
Otherwise, the DM compares the Dexterity (Stealth) checks of anyone hiding with the passive Wisdom (Perception) score of each creature on the opposing side.
How do I deterimine Dexterity check and where is the Wisdom(Perception) score found?
I will reread that part.
Thank-you
I see
So I would roll a D20 for the Dexterity check and add the Stealth modifier and check their Wisdom Score
Not quite
Assuming you're the player, you'd roll a d20 and add your dexterity modifier and proficiency bonus if you're proficient in stealth
Ok
You'd tell your DM that number and they would compare it against the enemies passive perception, which would be 10 + their wisdom modifier + proficiency bonus (if they're proficient in perception)
That makes sense. You explained that well.
Knowing the enemies' ability scores is a faux pas
Even if you do know them(likely from being DM yourself and having used the monsters in your games), most people pretend not to know
But that isn't a catch-all rule. "Metagaming"(Outside knowledge of DnD being used where your character might not know it) can work with your table if you cooperate with your DM and fellow players
I think they just wanted to know the mechanics for determining if something is surprised or not.
I might have missed it but just so I know where to find the rules, where does it give the calculation to add the 10+wisdom modifier+proficiency bonus in the basic rules?
Thank-you again for your help.
That's under Passive Checks
Thank-you
I will be back later today or in the week
Have a good day all!
I know it is a lot of questions but I like learning all of the rules as it is one of my favorite parts of the game.
Hi! I've been reading over backgrounds for my wizard (probably sage) and im really confused about the point behind specialties?? are they just for like storybuilding or are there advantages for different specialties?
Your background gives you a feature that can give you a specific benefit when it comes up. It also provides additional skill proficiencies and some additional starting equipment.
What you make of it is up to you. You can reflavour a background to reflect more than just the title. Perhaps your wizard has the acolyte background, which is normally associated with religion, but you say it represents your fraternity from wizarding school who will always help out a fellow alumnus.
Cloistered scholor is a good one. Gives you access to libraries.
Maybe easier to suggest from the Basic Rules in this channel?
oooh ok thank you!
Check #looking-for-players for games being run and #find-a-game has instructions on posting an ad looking for a DM as well.
Also, check libraries, game stores, meetup, and Facebooks/subreddit groups for local games.
Where I live there is not many other DND enjoyers... its hard.
So i play with my little sister but she is only 4
I would play with my brother but he is in prison for 4 months
same... i live in cambodia but there is not many big dnd players here .... so i have to play with people from the online
Read #find-a-game

I wish to slay a dragon!
That can happen in this game! Although adult dragons are pretty tough enemies, so they usually appear later.
hey
Hi!
So what part of D&D are you struggling with?
"everything" is not really a useful response to that question, even if it wasn't directed at you
I've played bg3 atleast
The best first step is reading the rules
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
can I do all of this for free though
The Basic Rules are free, as are character sheets, dice rolling apps and many other tools
nothing which is necessary to be paid?
I know what the definition of free is
The Basic Rules, the fundemental set of rules needed to play, are free
As are all the various components needed to play such as character sheets and dice
There are also optional tools that are free, such as discord for communicating with people, the avrae discord bot, and virtual tabletops like roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo
There is game content that requires you to purchase it for use. Mostly just extra customization options and optional rules. The basics are free but there is more to the game than just the basics
and if I'm playing with a DM who already has paid for them does that mean I don't need to?
It depends, but typically yes
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/), watch Matt Colville's first handful of "Running the Game" YouTube videos, and search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice—you're not the first person to ask about this!
I have my own brief list of tips here: #dnd-newcomers message
oh, wow, cool
maybe i'll DM too

So making a character on DnD beyond as a ranger but I can't seem to look at what "pet" I can pick from or have
You need to have a subclass feature. Rangers don't get a "pet" by default.
Ah I see so I need to look through the players book as the DND beyond app doesnt have any subclasses
D&D Beyond is limited to what is in the free Basic Rules unless you buy additional digital books.
DND beyond provides you free access to the content from the basic rules. You can unlock more content by purchasing the sourcebooks and adventures in digital format on their website.
In the basic rules, each class includes 1 subclass. Ranger's free subclass is Hunter. The ranger subclasses that have a "pet" are Beast Master and Drake Warden
Yeah I realised that you can't add purchased physical books to the app 😂
You cannot. But what you can do is use the website's homebrew tools to recreate any content that you own through other means, for your own private use on the site.
Just be sure to not publish anything you recreate
Oh that's sounds far to complicated, I think I'll just grab sticky notes the player hand book lol
You used to be able to purchase individual races, classes, spells, etc. on D&D Beyond but they removed that feature at the end of April.
Hello, are there anny organized games for new players you can find here ?
Check #find-a-game
I can say there's at least one that is perfect for new players as it only uses the Basic Rules.

If you check out the Basic Rules or the Handbooker Helper youtube series linked in the bot post above, and in OldMan's comment, those resources both have in depth discussions about combat and what actions you can take on your turn
Here's a free cheat sheet for actions you can do in combat:

Is it normal 5 mins into 1st seasion dm leaves without explaining why
Not normally.
Though there is little context to work off here.
Overall, this marks the importance of having a session zero when forming a new group.
When you have a chance, I recommend watching this video by Pointy Hat covering the some common pitfalls new groups fall into: https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4
Ty we had no season zero they wanted us to make our sheets prior to season 1
Typically when group approaches a campaigns you’ll tend to have everyone coming in with different expectations and preferences that can result in having an incompatible group.
whats homebrew??
Anything not officially published by Wizards of the Coast.
example??
To build on old man’s answer it’s also generally referred to the creation of home-made abilities and mechanics. Though it should be reserved for people who already have an understanding of how dnd’s mechanics work.
The foreclaimer race from the YouTube series Fool’s Gold.
So Ive played dnd before and have even been a dungeon master, however I am typically new to both, ive been the dm for a couple campaigns that never really got started, Ive played a total of 1 campaign that I finished and enjoyed, it was great but rather short any advice for such a player/DM
Sorry, but I'm not sure what kind of advice you're looking for specifically.
nothing specific just how to make it more interesting for my players Ig or be a great player myself and how to get into roleplaying easier
I know theres lot to get into so feel free to dm me what you have in mind instead of typing it here
The short answer to make things interesting for players is ask them what they find interesting and incorporate that. Also, recruit a good group of folks who want the same things from the game as you, people you trust and can communicate well with both to have fun and to troubleshoot. For more in-depth conversation on that score, see #dm-discussion.
As for being a great player, there's a huge list of things you can do. A few off-hand ideas:
- Show active interest in everyone else's stories; don't zone out because you're not in the spotlight.
- Similarly, don't hog the spotlight. Know when to say nothing and give space to others.
- Tell people (DM included) what you like about what they do. Thank the DM.
- Be respectful, don't try to argue or accuse, though you should be assertive if need be. Respect everyone's boundaries, including your own.
Roleplaying well is a matter of practice, I think. YouTube has lots of good advice here that I won't rehash.
how many people do you rec
i have 2 friends who want to play (I'm the dm) do we have enough people?
2 players is bare minimum, 3-5 is ideal
ok thanks
can i be a barehanded barbarian?
like
just beat the crap out of people no weapons
If you're talking about unarmed damage, the closest thing would be the monk class
dang
There are ways to do the same as a barbarian.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

For now, I recommend familiarizing yourself with the free basic rules.
Taking the time understand the individual mechanics of each class and the game is fundamental to bringing character concepts to life in D&D.
Hello, how can I join a game?
Check #find-a-game
So let’s say I have something really cool I can make my character do for tons of damage but action surge and flurry of blows only gets me so far would my fellow party member be able to give me his turn?
no
You can't take turns from other PCs.
If a spell has multiple components, do all components need to be fulfilled or does it just mean there is multiple different ways to cast it?
There’s a few ways to be an effective unarmed barbarian, the primary ways of the top of my head are:
- Take the Path of the Beast subclass at level 3
- Be a race that has a STR-based natural weapon (i.e. Leonin, Tortle)
- Take the Fighting Initiate feat for the Unarmed Fighting Style
You need all components generally. I can’t think of any spell that can be cast with different components
all must be fulfilled
However, if the any/all components don’t have a listed cost, and aren’t consumed, then a spell focus can be substituted for said components
Yep.
Material
Casting some spells requires particular objects, specified in parentheses in the component entry. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell. If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell. A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell's material components -- or to hold a spellcasting focus -- but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components.
- Source: Free Basic Rules, Chapter 10: Spellcasting, Casting a Spell, Components, Material: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#MaterialM
The closest thing to this is a barbarian that I have that has a light hammer… proficient in it because simple weapon and it is made to be thrown but it’s funny to imagine a rubber hammer being swung super hard at something like a goblin and killing it
Perhaps flavoring a pair of handaxes as bladed knuckles could be fun?
Hey, I'm new to this server, I'm semi new to DND, but know how to play, I would ask for help, like how to create a character.

here's the bot post with some links that can help you with the game rules, and for character creation specifically, the first part of the basic rules explains the process
Thank you
alr i dont have dice, is there a website on google that has liek 20 side dice
you can search "google dice roller" and it opens an interactive window where you can roll dice from d4 up to d20, and add modifiers as well
sweet
can someone help me make a character sheet?
I just finished a character sheet, I'm new to it... So nothing special
I’m new to dnd and I have a question
Do you make your character after of before you get into a campaign
you can make a character before joining a game but you may have to tweak the concept once you get into a campaign, depending on the dm’s house rules and group preferences
and for campaigns that are lore/story heavy it might be preferable to make a character from scratch that fits the worldbuilding and setting
so you can make characters whenever, just be flexible with them since not every campaign will be a good fit for a given character concept
Okay
what specifically are you having trouble with?

you can refer to the basic rules for an overview of the character creation process but feel free to ask if you have any questions about what to do
how do you effectively balance a character?

Hey
you can check the basic rules in the bot post or the pins to get a general idea for what character creation is like; the most important thing for stats is to understand which ones are relevant to your class and playstyle and to prioritize building those as high as possible
What should a backstory contain?
Kind of a broad question, but basically whatever you want that you find relevant to your character and whatever you find fun. I recommend chatting with your DM about your character's backstory so it can really fit well into the campaign!
Where you come from, how you got your skills/powers, why are you out in the world adventuring.
3 short paragraphs keep it simple
Where can u see how much the ability modifier is for lets say the dual wield fighting style from fighter?
Maybe im dumb or something
Is it the +4 from strengh or dex or something?
Tried too google and still dont get it
Thank you!!!
Akso dont understand how dangersense works for roleplaying dnd beyond just says advantage on dex save but shouldnt my char also have a bad feeling sometimes for roleplay?
First campagin
Danger sense as in the barbarian rage thing?
Yeah it’s just for traps and spells that need a dex save
Weapon attacks are ability mod + prof bonus if proficient with that weapon, what weapon are you using?
Rapier
So you can use either dex or str for that cause it’s a finesse weapon
You actually also answerd my next question with that thank you
Are you trying to use 2 rapiers?
Ok so with 2 weapon fighting you need to use 2 light weapons unless you have the dual wielder feat
Im getting 2 wep fighting style and 2 wep feat and then go totem 4 fighter 1 rest is phantom
So no need for light
Ok looks like you’re set
Brainrot bzild
Thank you so much for explaining
I dont want to bother my dm so much
Shes already struggelung with all of us idiots
No worries, I’d suggest 5 in barb so you get extra attack
are there any luck god superstitions about how you aquire dice? should i leave them in the moon or something to break them in? i don't want to start out with bad luck
No, it doesn't exist
