planning to dm for 3 people.. anything i should know? its my first time
how do i play?
Find a group of people who want to play (or are already playing and looking for more) and join them. There is very little gatekeeping for D&D
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
is there a way to play without a board? like virtually maybe
Hello, all.
Oh yes, a good portion of games are all done online now. It became very popular during the shutdown.
First thing is don't give people monotonous tasks, like of your planing your game to be a combat campaign don't just start throwing random obstacles at your party keep it combat related bc that's why their in it
I played this one guys campaign and all we did was run around a maze dodging traps it was so boring
There was no story and he decided to not add any combat which made it the least interesting it could be
Be ready to improvise. Your best bet is to start out with their starting zone and ask what they want to do. Have them build the story at first and just react to them. Then, after a bit of time, that will start to shift to you guiding their story that they have started themselves on. It takes a bit of practice, but just ask the players what they want to do and find a way to put a spin on it.
Also don't be super strict and let your story get in the way of their fun however temping it can be
Just realized that's Basically what endal said
OOH! And fudge your dice rolls. There's a reason the DM rolls behind a screen. Don't TPK your party in the first few levels, because that's not fun.
At the same time, use your dice to decide outcomes. I always liked using Even is Yes and Odd is No. Works well for when the players want to ask something and I don't have anything planned 😄
Well, not really "I didn' thave anything planned" and more of "They have thrown us so far off the rails that I don't think we're in Kansas anymore"
My current DM is so good at this any shenanigans we do he takes right back inline with the story
last dnd game i ran was in 2022, i had cat character sheets and the party EACH had a pet dragon and started a family of it before commiting genocide to a kingdom
that was.. 7th grade..
That tracks for a 7th grade campaign.
8th grade dnd campaign will go crazy
First campaign I did with my kids was pretty much all My Little Pony themed. I watched a few episodes and came up with something custom that they all loved. Only played a few times, though
i have a dnd game inspired off umineko and final fantasy and fire emblem
i just cant find people for it : (
Been playing Fallout New Vegas lately and I love the idea of doing a Fallout themed session.
i love campaigns with wars
i also made a weapon that has ghosts suffering for its power and it hits alot of crit damage per shot
Best campaign I ever ran was an amalgamation of D&D and the movie Zootopia. The idea was that different races all lived in relative harmony with eachother. One of the scenarios the players ran involved finding out why the synthetic blood that the vampires ate was being diluted. It was a bit silly, but at the same time I gave them high stakes and made them fall in love with the NPCs.
Oh, that's another good tip, @pine kraken , kill your players favorite NPC to get them to dive onto the rails 😄
thats actually kinda funny, my dnd character is a british caterpillar with a mustache, bowtie and tophat thats 5,7'' 😭
im currently in the process of making a siren inspired character and i have no clue where to specify anything
Wdym specify
Also I'm trying to make a post but I'm not sure if it will end up in #looking-for-players
Like do all posts just go there
So down in #find-a-game type in the command /looking_for_players and hit enter, it will prompt you for your game information. When you're ready hit submit
Yo
Hoooooowdy ho!
Hi
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

For those of you who are new, welcome to the hobby
For the visual learners, this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
Afterwards, check out the resources in the bot post above and #learn-to-play
I recommend trying out the intro demo, reading the free basic rules, and watching the Hanbooker Helper videos.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This is a great way to learn as AL Games follow rules as written guidelines,
- Games are broken down into self contained adventures that are completed in a single session.
- This can be played in person and online.
- #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690are channels in the server where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Intro demo?
Yo I've only played fighter and blood hunter roles in my DND life never really stepping outside of it
And I was wondering if anyone had a good fighter build with a little bit of elemental magic
The only problem is the ones I've seen are all healer and religious esc and I just want some elemental capabilities
I chose fire ganasi as my race
Does it have to be elemental or any magic featre is fine?
Kinda looking for elements
Pretty sure paladin has an elemental variant
Not officially.
Any one got suggestions for a fighter esc based on elements character (pls react bc I gtg and I want to see the noti)
Does it have to be fighter class?
If yes then probably eldritch knight
If on then bladesinging wizzies are pretty good
anyone starting a campaign?
My bad
Day 3 of trying to find a game lol
Y'all I'm completely new to dnd and I've never been in a game before, I just watch videos on it- What do I do 😭
hiii i also just started learning how to play yesterday, what i’m doing is watching a show called dimension 20 on youtube where you essentially just watch a party play in their campaign, i recommend you start with fantasy high just so you can see how a game actually moves and works and get familiar with some of the terms!
hello! thank you so much for helping me out and recommending stuff. I highly appreciate it!
of course!! we’re both completely new to this so we’ll work it out together 🙂↕️❤️
if you want as well, dnd beyond has a very good character set up for people that are beginners! they explain each part of making your character and what they mean, for example, the class, the race, ability scores, ect. let me grab the link for you
just press the standard option and click the ‘beginner? show help text’ option before you begin! ❤️
You both should check out this channels pins and #learn-to-play . Both contain a link to the free basic rules, as well as the hand booker helper video supplement
Getting into D&D via shows is a great way to gauge your interest in the hobby, just keep in mind they are professional shows so their production value is quite high compared to the average DnD game
I tried watching some of the dnd shows but none of them really interested me… I’ve had a lot of fun playing it tho
New to the game, working my way around learning the basics and I think I'm ready to start my first campaign. I enjoy the fantasy elements where you can dive into a new reality, a world where the mechanics are entirely different, surrounded by likeminded adventurers.
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
@tired river
Hi I'm new to this just really wanted a place to break from reality and live a an exciting life filled with adventure or sometimes slow and meaningful in dnd
Hello! I'm also new to this, I have a gist to how it works but no clue on the mechanics lol
Me too
It's always nice to know I'm not alone 😔
May I recommend...

Do people host games that are looking for complete beginners? I'm so clueless and just want to play the game I'm the type of guy who learns by doing the thing lol
OOOO TY
yes dnd beyond is fantastic for learning has basically the players handbook for free
Ooooh
You might also find value in looking up "dnd character sheet explained" for a summary. And yes @inner salmon , people do host games for learners.
Nice too know ty
also if u want to experience it a bit for without playing there are a ton of dnd podcast but keep in mind they are much more well produced than actual dnd because it is a show and they are getting paid for it
tysm for your guys helpp! I appreciate it so much
A good way to learn is in game though.
Observations and committing mistakes is a good way to learn by practice
And not always the most well-thought out idea will be as good
yeah I know but I more said it if they want to get a feel of what it looks like in practice before playing really helped me at least
I'm watching dimension20 rn it's entertaining
Yeah some dnd youtubers do make alot of stuff like that
I suggest Not another dnd podcast thats my personal favorite but there a ton of great ones
Man reading some of ur guys msgs makes me feel rlly lucky to have the group I play with
Is it okay that I don't have a physical dice? Like can I use a virtual one and it works the same?
Ofc
If you're playing online, it's expected to use virtual dice anyway.
yeah go ahead dice can be expensive and why wouldnt u use a free version
Hello I am new to the server. I am "new" to dnd I like playing rogue some parts are confusing should I continue playing rogue?
if u do it on dnd beyond itll add all ur bonuses for u and everything
whats confusing you about it?
We can I find a game?
Is dnd beyond a site to play it on?
you can make characters and look at the rules
It's the subclass and the whole
also if everyone in ur party uses it ur dm can see all ur shit in real time I think dont qoute me on that
Like roll 20?
Some people do, yeah
There are lots of ways to play D&D online
like the concept of a subclass or one in particular
Ah gotchu
It's got useful tools to help create and organise a character and campaign. You'd also want some way of talking, like chat or voice comms.
We use discord
That'll work.
yes except that has the mat and stuff and im pretty sure dnd beyond doesnt have that but basically make a character on beyond and play on roll 20
Like the assassin's is quite confusing I have dyslexia it's hard to read a whole page I sometimes play warlock
If u want too dont have too ofc
Ig im more asking what exactly are u confused about it, like what its role is or like what its for
But there is a lot of reading in general so I don’t think the class would be the problem?
I don't know its hard to read sometimes I get it wrong
rogue subclasses are so weird honestly they dont really add much the only one I ever considered was one with a subclass called fey infiltrater
let me check it out ill get back to you
I also play warlock
y'all what's a homebrew 😭 I saw it on dnd beyond I'm so confused
Dw abt it, I read something 2-3 times over and still get something wrong 😵💫
Are u playing 2 campaigns or multiclassing?
No clue 💀
Was playing 2 different campaigns until my friends got bord
something home made something a dm made/non-official shit that someone made for their own campaign
I’m gonna assume it’s something u make urself
OHHH OK
Ah so did both of them end or just one?
ok basically whenever u attack someone who hasnt gone yet u auto-sneak attack damage+
Both
Unfortunate 😔
Assassins are typically murderers for hire. They work best from surprise, learn how to impersonate people, and carry out sneak attacks against their targets.
They do their best work when nobody sees their knife coming.
With warlock they have different subclasses with lots of writing same with rogue which subclass do I pick
autocrit if theyre suprised+can basically make a fake id and a fake person+can copy someone for sneak shit for example copy handwriting and shit+at high levels do a ton more damage if theyre suprised
thats basically every ability simplified
but very simplified to a large degree
basically sparknotes
I like arcan trister for rogue and have no idea for warlock
If u start another campaign are you gonna pick rogue or warlock again?
oh arcane trickster super simple if u already know how spells work
How do worlds work? Like is there a set world where most people play in or do DMs like make one
I'm sorry if I sound dumb
I think my dm made his own one
Rogue they are really fun
there is a preset dnd one thats pretty much generic fantasy shit or u can make one like my dm made a world thats entirely made up of floating islands its up to the dm
Then I guess for sake of making it easier just focus on rogue subclasses for now
For warlock, your basic picks are Tome, Chain or Blade.
Tome gets you extra spells, very useful.
Chain gets you a familiar, a spirit companion that follows your instructions.
Blade is for warlocks that want to fight up close with weapons.
Nvm 😂^
like even in the monsters guide theres premade lore for a shit ton of monsters
alr tysm
How functional is the paladins steed spell?
I want to be in a campaign but I have autism and dyslexia who doesn't be the character and very shy
just find a party who doesnt take it super seriously, like rules lawyers and stuff and youll be fine im sure
I mean being the character comes with practice, me and my group are all noobs and we are way off how our characters act but we try our best is all
do u know anybody that plays dnd already?
I’m a paladin but I don’t really follow lawful good so my dm showed me a different paladin path that aligns with how I behave in game
yes as u should paladins are my fav class but I love being a little lawful good boy stopping the evil doers
No but my friends did play
And as for being shy I would say find a group of people ur comfortable with playing
I picked oath of vengeance so currently showing no mercy to the racist corrupt lords who slaughtered my people (in dragonborn)
thats what im doing trying to find the people who burned my village down when I was a kid
I would invite u to the one im planning but its gonna be a little crunchy so idk if youd like that
Crunchy?
Mine was a bit weird cuz originally I didn’t know the man who did it and I was actually working for him unknowingly. Once he sent me and my group to commit genocide on lizardfolk (which my character wasn’t comfortable with) the lizardfolk told me abt the man I was working for
like im gonna have them worry about spell components and stuff and im only allowing certain ckasses for what fits in my world but if ud be interested let me know
Y'all I just blasted a rat with magic missle I love my life
In the end our crew is notorious for doing what we liked and we switched sides and killed the noble who was paying us, turns out there were even more powerful people controlling his actions which we will find out later on in the campaign 😵💫
I never did spell components
ok choso hit them witrh that piercing blood
LMAOO JJK REFERENCE
yeah its kind of annoying but I am making spells better as a counter to that so my players will be eating well
Okay
Ur gonna join his campaign?
I don't know
if u dont its fine I just figured id offer dont feel pressured but if u ever want to hit me up
Okay I am not ready to play with people I don't know at the moment sorry
Fair reasoning
yeah dont worry bout it hope u find a good party
Thanks for offering
Newt what level 1 spells do u recommend for a paladin
I’m lvl 3 and I picked bless, wrathful smite and shield of faith
I would but my autism isn't letting me
pretty much that plus a spell because front line and concentatrion doesnt go great togethor
i def suggest just spending most slots on divine smit anyway
What does that mean?
what does concentration mean u mean?
As in why don’t they go together
Pretty sure concentration is for how long the enchantment lasts
I woudve thought 10 rounds is long enough
Concentration is you focusing on the spell to keep it active if you take damage you need to roll to see if you can maintain the spell
Oh I wasn’t aware of that second part
yeah taking a ton of damage is part of the paladin thing so its hard to do both
Well if my shield of faith gives me an ac of 21 it’s likely I won’t be taking much damage at all so is that alright?
bless is a good way to start a fight tho or shield of faith
yeah but if ur fighting a ton of monsters ur gonna get wittled down and some will hit eventually
Fairs, so what kind of spells can I use?
I usually do bless, a extra smite, and a heal
I'm currently in the process of making a character in DND Beyond, what do I pick?? Like step by step, quick thing or idk
U bless urself?
step by step is better in my opinion
do u have any pros and cons?
yeah why wouldnt u u can bless like 4 people im pretty sure been a minute since i used it (cleric usually does it now adays
3
step by step you have more control over everything and quick it just gives u good stuff but also ive never done quick so im prob the wrong person to ask
But fairs, I just thought I’d bless the rest of the crew I didn’t even consider myself 😵💫
alr! ty for your advice.
well then depends on the classes in ur party and how many in party
As a vengeance paladin I got bane aswell which does the opposite of bless on enemies, would it be worth using both or just bless
cant use both theyre both concentration
Ah so only one concentration at a time
Can someone recommend a character name I'm so indecisive when it comes to name
yeah thats why when ur a paladin and have so little spells to begin with its usually better to just use spells on stuff like compell duel and smites atleast thats my opinion
Well we have a barbarian, sorcerer, wizard and someone else I’m not sure they are a tanky sprllcaster tho
Heading into #character-discussion
I wish i could help i literally baked it into my characters background they didnt remember it and theyre called fist of agregor, that name of my god
oh true thats be better just @ me there
I defo see ur point, I guess I’ll test out the spells I’ve chosen anyway and see how I do
y'all do races change how my character does in the game??
like are there stat bonuses or stuff
imma just be basic and make em human
yes changes how people treat u, there might be race dominated cities like a elf city, have different bonuses, some are better for some classes than others just changes a lot
orr do you have any recommended classes?
also head to #character-discussion for more questions
Ohh ok!
I have question can youulticlass in dnd?
Multiclass*
Like a mix of druid and clerk?
I'm having a hard time choosing from both so wondered if multiclass is a thing
Yes you can multiclass (although we generally don't recommend it for new players) - here's the rules for multiclassing: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
Oh ok
Clerk for me has too much holy style but I really like to be the support type character who heals but have a green asthetic with nature so druid falls into it
u can also make it so cleric isnt exactly holy maybe they worship nature or the animals in a forest it can be whatever u want
Oh ok
More clearly, Clerics, while they most often worship a single deity, are also able to worship a pantheon or even their domain (life, war, etc.) itself. You could also ask your DM if you could reflavor it as gaining powers from the world itself, but that’s 1. Up to DM discretion and 2. Might be too similar to Druids
Oh ok ok ty
yes thank you for expanding i sometimes forget the details
I chose wizard- im kinda confused cuz its my first time doing this, theres like a tab for spells and class features what do i do theree???
Is there a trustable place online to make your character sheet
Yes, D&DBeyond
Ok ty
DnDBeyond has a character creation tool. You can also buy the D&D books on DnDBeyond to access more character options/features/items.
Also has a mobile app
Compared to roll20 which would you say is more user friendly
Personally I find DnDBeyond easier to use and understand
I created my character on roll 20 and it was pretty easy to understand but I’ve never seen dndbeyond
I have not personally used roll20, but I know that D&DBeyond is very good for beginners
there are a ton of videos online explaining it I would start there
okaa
Ah well Tbf I had my dm on discord guiding me through the process
But use what's easiest for you and whatever your group preferes to use.

I haven't read the rules yet but do I use dice for my stats?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
^ Here's how you determine your ability scores
The first chapter in the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) goes over how to create a character step by step.
The modifiers are determined after you set your ability scores.
Ok thank you very much
what is the difference of investigate and insight? like i'm reading it but I still dont get it
investigation*
Investigation: physically sifting through the room to find clues (opening drawers, looking behind paintings, looking at the door hinges, finding the broken glass shards, etc.)
Insight: Taking time to mentally go over the evidence and identify whether something makes sense or not - is that person lying to you? Are they hiding something?
Hey, sorry
I was reading the “player’s handbook” to create a character, but in the races, I see no goblin. There’s no way I can be a goblin?
Yes - you would first need your DM to allow that species option and then either buy the book that it is in to access it or be in a campaign with content sharing enabled to access the material.
You would need the Monsters of the Multiverse book to access the Goblin species.
Alright, thank you!
I'd always read Investigation as deductive reasoning and logic, and Insight as reading people, their body language, state of mind.
sorry : twlilight santuary regain temp hp ?
like someone get hit 4/13 temp hp next turn will regain to 13/13 ?
Temporary hit points are separate from the regular points. So you are not healing existing damage with that ability, you’re adding temporary HP.
i would like to join a campaing
yes i mean add new temp hp ??
hallo
right
Goddamn my profile picture is horrendous.
example 13/13 temp hp my men got hit 4/13 temp hp next turn of twilight santuary regain temp hp back to 13/13 ??
Huh uh
they provide unique benefits and abilities depending on which direction you take them
more options are open to you as you level up
ok I want to be a bard.
good point
read the first chapter
I do not care other classes i want to be a bard
... alright
then read bard
each class has their dedicated pages
read the first chapter itll say the basics
Oh thank you
Read through the basic rules that were already linked to you, that’s how you learn. I’d you have any specific questions, we can answer those here
ye, this stuff requires a lot of reading and keeping track of rules
exactly everything is on the page i sent any other specific questions is more what this is for
but then again, what long lasting game doesnt have that type of complexity
Perfect im forgetful
Is the perfect concoction for chaos
well if you forget, DMs/GMs are always there to remember for you
well u can always ask questions mid session the dm has the books and shit probably
or atleast a knowledge on rules
Goddamn it i can't load the website my internet is bad
Oh, forgot to mention. player's handbook; very useful
well yeah obviously
The parts of the PHB that are necessary to play are all in the Basic Rules
yeah but idk some people prefer book
Don’t feel pressured to spend money on things when starting out.
Thats the thing i can't load it
Im a minor
i mean the online starter pack is 0. the funsies costs about $1 for a d20 at a local shop
then buy the book
If you’re having issues with the website you can go to #ddb-support
In a minor
My internet is just bad not the server
ok well no internet no money might be shit outa luck
That’s really not good advice, not everybody has the ability nor funds to invest money into this and there’s also other things to work around
Indeed
maybe library if u have near u
hi y'all I'm new to the game and looking for a one shot campaign, please dm me (idk where to find games in here lol)
or a game store something like that

alrighty, tysm
well then idk man u might be shit outa luck because u cant send a pdf or anything about it so idk try to find someone who has it already or save up for it or something like that
If you’re able to connect to other websites and are just having trouble with D&DBeyond, here’s a link to a pdf of the Basic Rules
Im freshly I don't go to school because I'm too old. And im a minor. And my mother don't even give me shred of my money thats she keep for "safety"
Don’t post your age against server rules
Never happen just your imagination
I’m sorry for your situation. The Basic Rules are available for free, and if you can find a game store nearby you might be able to find physical copies of the Basic Rules there as well. Otherwise, D&DBeyond and the link I sent you are your best bets.
welp idk what u want man we gave u all the resources available i suggest u use the pdf already sent if u cant load the full page
No i was just dumping trauma at that point. Sorry and thanks
Your so kind. thanks man
No problem
Most of us are, feel free to ask as many questions as you’d like once you’ve read the Basic Rules
Goddamn you're way too kind. that i feel like an ahole all my life compared to you
Thanks again man hopefully you have a wonderful rest of your life
There are more then 170 plus pages... Is ThAt thE BaSiC RuLes..
A lot of those are spells and monsters.
For the spells you only need to read the ones that interest you and are for your class, and monsters you can ignore entirely
Ok. damn you're a professional at this
You'll be wanting to read chapters 1-3, 5, 7 and 9. For a spellcaster, 10 as well. You can skip over much of the content once you have your race and class selected.
I'm pretty new here as well but I have been playing Divinity origin and baldurs gate ofr a while. How much of knowledge from those game do you guys think I can apply in DnD?

Cool cool !!
Guys where do I find the dnd beyond digital dice roller?
Thanks and please don't kidnapp me your Profile picture is horrifying
Much of the basics are the same but there are important differences to note. You'll have a head-start, at least.
Bottom left on your character sheet. If you're in a campaign, tap anything with a + (like Perception +2) and it'll roll into your campaign log.
Im trying to say drawbridge and ended up with drawbit#h
Needs to be enabled in character options aswell
oka ty
Ah, yes. Though it's a wonder that wouldn't be set on by default.

Hello ^^
Follow the instructions above and specifically look for games that say newcomer-friendly. Alternatively, make your own post specifying that you are a newcomer.

Just run it and then a dialogue will come up where you can input the necessary information
I'm new never played before anyone willing to help teach ??

Hola amigo

hi yall gonna start reading the rulebook tomorrow since im super new and interested in DnD. any tips?
tyty :D!!
I’m new aswell (only 5 sessions into my current campaign) but it’s been a lot of fun and I’d have to give a lot of that credit to my dm
Whats your classs zainnn
I would say try get a group of interested newbies and play under a good dm and you’ll have a good time 😄
Paladin
Ohhhh thats niceee
Yeah I’m enjoying paladin a lot
Im used to long ranged characters on other games. But I chose to be a cleric this time ahhaha
a grave domain one
Nice onee
I wasn’t sure of what subclasses I was gonna pick before making my character
But thankfully it ended well
What did you choooseeee
I ended up choosing the oath of vengeance which perfectly blended with my backstory of getting revenge on the corrupt people who slaughtered my village
Super interesting, my dms worked my background very nicely into the campaign
Rlly? 👀
Like I am a reborn, stitched together by a goddess using different flesh and bones. Now Im just a wanderer seeking why I was made cuz the goddess never spoke to me smth like that
Lmao that’s much more creative than mine
Ahhahahaha its very edgy tho
I mean it’s a role play game so get as edgy as u want!
Touche
Let's add friends enjoy some games 😄 @spice scarab @manic relic
I’m also very new and seeking a party ^^
hi im new
Yes sureeeee
Sup fellas
henlooo
You don’t need to read the whole thing. For instance, you don’t need to know about every race, class, or spell, even if you’re the DM. Focus on what’s relevant to you, take your time, don’t feel bad about forgetting or not understanding right away. It should hopefully click eventually, and for anything that still confuses you, search blogs, videos, or ask on the server for clarification!
Lets play soonnnn
thanks!!yippee
Thanks! But I’ve already got some ppl to play with, I hope u guys are successful in forming a group and have fun tho
May I join?
That’s a link to a channel not me offering a game
Oh ok😅

#learn-to-play and check the pinned messages here in this channel. And welcome!
alright thanks
Start with getting to grips with the free basic rules, watch some vidoes/streams of folks playing D&D to see a bit of how the mechanics work (undrestanding that many of these are for entertainment purposes and may not reflect exactly how the rules work), then try your hand at creating a character sheet (refer to the free basic rules as the first chapter is a step by step on how to create a character). Then when you feel like you're readyt o find a group to play with, read the info in #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group to play with.
I kind of got the basics of the dnd but i wanna experience the game by myself. If anyone is looking for players lmk, like i mean right now
Hey guys, just a quick question, im playing fighter and i chose dueling and dueling gives me a 2+ bonus to damage roles with that weapon, where do i write the 2+ bonus? On the Atk bonus in Attacks and spellcasting
Hello I am new here and I want to play too
Idk if this is a newcomer question, but, why does It seem like the world in dnd never advanced technologically, or gets some sort of industrial Revolution
Im new 2, im currently reading some of the rules n stuff 😅
I see
Is ist possible to find games here?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
No, there are no games hosted. Check #find-a-game for games to join.
yes
Hi there, if you are looking to form a party, count me in if you must :DDD. I'm also new and looking into stuff as well while trying to form a party
Yeah sure, wanna add me?
I can't find the rules again though and I read them before some days so I don't really remember them
Im currently outside going for a walk, i'll be home in around 30 m
????
Check #find-a-game
Btw excuse my poor grammar english is my 4th langauge
hi im new :) also new to dnd, all i know is that there will be lore and storys..and i so wanna try dnd 🥺 just dont know how 🤔

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
thank you :)
HI! :D
Are you you doing this through paper and pencil, pdf, or a digital character sheet like the one on dndbeyond?
Paper
Essentials kit
Dueling
When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.
- Source: Free Basic Rules, Chapter 3, Fighter, Fighting Style
So you would add the +2 to Damage/Type section where of a melee weapon listed, just remember you can only use it when you are wielding it with one hand.
Damage calculation would be: (damage dice of melee weapon) + (STR or DEX modifier, depending on the weapon type) + 2 Fighting Style.
What about when buying armor, i started with 13 + 1 armor since im a dwarf fighter soldier, and i bought chain shirt which is 13 AC + dex mod (max 2)
Does it become 27 AC or what?
No, it's a bit more simple than that.
Have you read the free basic rule yet?
No i havent

Then you'll want to start with reading the first few chapters of the free basic rules as they cover your options in character creation. This section here covers armor class calculations: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
Current armor worn (or natural AC) + Dex mod (if that applies), plus additional modifiers like spells if I remember right
Since you're doing this manually, this article by Instructables provides a full break down of the paper version of the character sheet and how to fill it out manually. https://www.instructables.com/Creating-a-DD-5e-Character-for-Beginners/
i try but the website confuses me even more so idk what i should do
Hmm, then why don't we take a step back and start with a general overview, this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
If you are having trouble with the article, then you can try. https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214106/HandyHow-to-Fill-Out-a-Character-Sheet
If you're still having trouble after that. I can highlight the step by step process.
@exotic remnant do we submit our Characters here?
Ok thank u @fresh fable I submited my character
Do Dragonborn fit in Eberron?
Not every campaign setting will have some playable races. Consult with your DM if certain ones are allowed.
Ok well the dm said yes so
How do I submit a bid to search for a group?
Check #find-a-game and read the instructions carefully.
Got it. Thx
As an artificer, could I cast a ritual spell as a ritial even if I dont have that spell prepared?
No. A ritual spell needs to be prepared.
To cast a spell as a ritual, a spellcaster must have a feature that grants the ability to do so. The cleric and the druid, for example, have such a feature. The caster must also have the spell prepared or on his or her list of spells known, unless the character's ritual feature specifies otherwise, as the wizard's does
- Free basic rules, Chapter 10, rituals: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Rituals
Hey yall is there a big difference between a fighter and a paladin, I know a paladin is like a religious fighter but is there more to it both in mechanics and role play?
The classes are described in the free Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Fighter
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Paladin
@glass summit So basically all those spells with various materials and components can be skipped if I am holding this arcane focus thing?
Some of those materials seem really elaborate like a newt's eye in a gem or whatnot
Yes, unless that Material component has a Gold-Piece (GP) cost
Material components without GP costs are largely just flavor, since any Component Pouch you have is fully stocked with every non-GP-costed material component you will need
alright makes sense thank you!
Be sure to read the material components. Most of them are easter eggs 😉
IE Zone of Truth requires a pound of flesh
Why does It seem like all of dnd is always stuck in medieval times?
It's a fantasy RPG, usually set in a world that is fantasy based.
Because D&D was created around a medieval / Renaissance era setting.
You can check out the Eberron book for a little bit more "steam punk" style setting
It does?
If you want a fantasy setting set in modern or futuristic era setting then there are other TTRPGs for that (see Shadowrun).
Remember that D&D isn't the only TTRPG.
(I think you might mean Clone, which needs a cubic inch of flesh? Not that it matters much for the advice you're giving lol.)
In the Starter Set campaign what happens if the characters don’t find the goblin trail after the ambush? I just skipped ahead to the city… let’s just say my first run as a DM was a complete disaster—didn’t help that we were all new players and my friends took every opportunity to try and “break” the game lol
I don’t remember if it’s a skill check to find the trail.
If it is, then I suppose you just skip over to arriving at the town.
Though one can could use the a skill check to be broken down as different levels of success.
For example, failing a check still results in finding the trail but it takes several hours to do so and more enemies are there.

hello
My name is Erius, I'm new to DnD, please treat me well.
I have character in mind, but I don't know how to express that in DnD character making.
Hi! I'm relatively new but have played a bit. Shall we move to #character-discussion and i could help maybe?
okay
Yes a skill check. The players failed so I moved on. Thanks for the ideas of degrees of failures!
It's recommended to read through the whole adventure before running it. I know LMoP does address what happens if the party bypasses the ambush site and just makes for town.
I knew it was going to be tough going when the first thing the players wanted to do was abandon the caravan and return to explore the town. I told them it would destroy their group reputation and they’d never get another job anywhere ever again and they relented. My one success lol
Hello
Yes, I realized right away that only reading a few steps in was a huge mistake. Thanks for the advice.
So I made a character can I get someone's opinion
We have #character-discussion if you want feedback on an idea!
I’m going to a newbie night as a player at my LGS so hopefully I’ll pick up some pointers.
im completely new to dnd but i would love to get started in some sort of way

I recommend trying out the intro demo, reading the free basic rules, and watching the Hanbooker Helper videos.
I’m new to DND and my friends and I want to run through a campaign together with me as DM if anybody has any helpful tips I’d appreciate it. I’ve been wanting to get into this for a long time but never had the opportunity
The best advice for getting started is to give everything a read. You dont need to memorise all the rules, but getting a general sense of where to look when you need a rule would be fantastic
And dont forget to have fun
I would recommend reading through the basic rules, getting or making a quick reference guide of the rules, and starting out with a pre-made adventure designed to be completed in a single session.
Where can I find the basic rules and anything else to help me out for my first Campaign

Awesome thanks. If yall have any other ideas to help me out I’d appreciate it. Tips and tricks on what to do as a DM
This dnd beyond article goes over DMing basics and provides a free adventure https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1452-how-to-be-a-dungeon-master#dm-resources
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/), watch Matt Colville's first handful of "Running the Game" videos, and search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice as this topic comes up often.
I have my own suggestions here: #dnd-newcomers message
You can also check out DMs guild as you can filter adventures to free ones that are legally available
There's also this list from the D&D Beyond forums: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
Awesome. You guys are great thank you
I often see first time DMs feel like they need to strictly stick to what is written in the rules or what is happening in the pre-written adventure they're running. At the end of the day this is a roleplaying game, so if you want to ignore something you read in the interest of a better flowing game, or a more fun one, please feel free to do so
Only reason i’m here is because all the local DM’s have groups and aren’t taking in any new players :,)
So hopefully I can learn the game here

Having to leave another game due to work scheduling conflict :/
that sucks
Scheduling is the strongest enemy in dnd
100%
i believe you though i've never played dnd but i have rped
How do I know what I need to roll for a concentration constitution saving throw?
10 or half damage depending on which is better
You can read them further here: Concentration
So... lets say someone hits me in the face 12 damage. Do I roll for a 6 or a 10?
10
I'm looking for a hunter x hunter group / server
You could try in #looking-for-community but I imagine those are pretty hard to come by
I think just maybe searching online may be better
Ah I see so if I got hit in the face for 40 damage, my saving throw is a 20
Thanks
yes exactly
So at higher levels where things deal stupid amounts of damage concentration spells kind of suck
To build on this, I would also recommend adjusting some expectations as it won’t be a one to one translation from anime to game mechanics.
Ohh yeah, good luck maintaining concentration after getting hit by an Ancient's breath attack
Well I am guessing by the time I am facing ancient things my level is so high that I should be able to concentrate through a nuclear strike
So I guess I have to find ways of avoid getting hit in the first place
That is the enlightened approach to maintaining concentraiton, yes
If you check out the image linked in this reddit post about The Survivability Onion you'll find a handy little graphic I like to use when explaining the best ways to avoid taking damage in combat encounnters
i am completely new to this any help on how to get started

How are you making your character? Pencil and paper, pdf, dnd beyond character builder?
Hey I just joined. I'm also an absolute beginner. I used DnD Beyond to make my character, and looking for a campaign to join. Could I get some help please?
I also want to join a campaign but I can’t seem to find any…

Thank you. I'll be sure to try out each option. Thank you for the help.
My post above should help
What does advantage/disadvantage do and how do you get them?
Advantage lets you roll two d20 dice and you take the higher number of the two.
Disadvantage lets you roll two d20 dice and you take the lower number of the two.
Certain situations, spells, feats, class abilities, etc. will have you roll for advantage or disadvantage.
Thanks
For example, if you have the Poisoned condition then you have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

if i want to ask about the pathways a barbarian can take which channel should i go to?
That would be #character-discussion or #optimization , depending on what type of feedback you are looking for.
really just understanding the pathways bc i dont quite get it from looking at online sources
ill head to potimization
Can you help me flush out my character because I don’t know how to do like any of it just the Backstory, appearance, personality, goals, etc
I just need someone to help
You’ll want to cater backstory, personality, and goals to the individual campaign you’ll be playing that character in.
#character-discussion can help you set the fundamental building blocks in the meantime.
I also recommend checking out this video by Ginny Di covering common pitfalls of this topic here: https://youtu.be/QnFStvEOVcA?si=36r4M9nUiyTfDB1a
I am attempting to have a level three Gnome Wizard who specializes in Necromancy. This Gnome wizard will provide as a support class for the group having necromancer spells that deal damage, so such spells should be focused on. However, also assisting spells that preferably are Necromancer spells, but if not, are good support spells that likely does not deal much damage to help the group with. I am curious on which spells would be best for a level three Necromancer Gnome Wizard like myself?
Hello, I'm new here and pretty much new to DND. I played before but it was very beginner-like from all members involved. While I do have basic information and all, I would like to actually understand it before I join a party. Is there any video anyone could recommend me if it's not too much of a bother, please?
Check our #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel for useful links and resources to help get you started with D&D.
Thank you
#character-discussion Might help.
for the wizards, aways fireball no matter what.
for a warlock dip as a wizard is it better to stop at 2 for eldritch invocation,3 for pact boon or 4 for asi cos i dont wanna delay the wizard progression too much
So recently finished my first ever 1 shot campaign and played as a lvl 9 swashbuckler rogue. For the upcoming Vecna campaign thing, I was curious to see if I could play my favorite pokemon ditto (which is just this blob thing).
I heard there is a race called Plasmoids that pretty much do that and was curious if anyone has tips on putting a build together for it. I believe the new campaign starts with characters at lvl 10 so idk if that helps (literally only played 1 D&D session so i have no idea what im doing)

I came up with a character it’s a kenku paladin
yipe :3
Imagine though it’s a short bird humanoid going up and just nuking a crowd of goblins with a holy sword 😭
im not sure what that mean but humanoid bird with holy sword sounds cool
A normal sized bird carrying a large holy sword? That'll be terrifying to go against
yes
Hey, so I'm making this warlock character...for a level 1, can they have a weapon? Like a staff?

Where should we go in the discord to look for groups?
for a starting equipment it says arcane focus...do i just chose the lowest one in the list of arcane focus?

thanks
No problem. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Hey! New here, I was wondering how much should I know about the game before searching for a party?
The usual advice is know how to make a character, know what your character can do, know about using ability scores, and know the general flow of combat. This is all covered in the Basic Rules in the pins.
Yes, I highly recommend you learn about the fundamental rules of the game before you try to join a game.

Thanks!
So i'm in a few campaigns at the minute and i've only played more physical combat classes. Can someone explain how spellcasting works with the spell slots and stuff? I watched a video but i'm still not sure. Happy to move this question elsewhere if this is the wrong channel :)
Moved from DnD discussion
Sure.
Let's take a level 1 druid. They have 2 spell slots, and being a prepared caster, they have access to all of the level 1 spells on their class list. They can have ready a certain number of spells (WIS bonus + level, so a druid with +3 in Wisdom at level 1 could prep 4 spells). This set of four is the pool they can cast spells from.
They can only cast two spells from that pool of four, so you could cast the same spell twice or one spell once and an entirely different one once.
Generally spells are broken down into levels.
- Cantrip Spells
- These are spells that you can cast as many times as you'd like.
- Leveled Spells
- These are spells that you can cast as long as long as you have a spell slots available of that level.
Spell slots themselves can be considered to be similar stamina. As long as you have enough stamina (spells slots), you can cast leveled spells.
Okay, thanks. This makes sense so far :)
So what does it mean when someone says e.g. "i cast [insert spell name] at 3rd level"
Then you would need to have a 3rd level spell slot available to use.
Each spell has a level associated with it. Magic Missile, for example, is level 1. You could use a third-level slot for it to get extra effects, but not all spells give you some additional effect.
You can cast a spell using a higher-level slot, but not a lower-level one.
ahhh i see. do you have the same number of spell slots in each level?
Each class with spells has a chart showing how many slots you get per level (outside of multiclassing, which is beyond the scope of this channel).
This is known as upcasting.
It is when you cast a leveled spell with a higher level spell slot to have a greater effect.
This can be greater damage, a greater range, or some other increased effect.
What the increased itself is determined by the spell itself as some spells can't be up-casted.
To add on to Zero, lower-level spells can be upcasted (say you used all your level 1 slots but still want to cast a level 1 spell and you have a third-level slot), but not all of them include extra effects.
thanks so much guys, i think i get it :) might try a spellcasting class in my next campaign or one-shot!
Before I forget, the free basic rules has a chapter dedicated to the topic of spells: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#WhatIsaSpell
Folks have differing opinions on what makes for a good intro spellcaster class, but my thinking is either eldritch knight fighter or arcane trickster rogue for a sprinkle of magic. For a bit more, ranger or paladin.
But any class is doable!
Yo, i'm very new to Dnd. Looked through the website once and did a quick character creation there, but no games yet. Does anyone know a good place to get started?

Thanks mate!
hey im trying to make a character in dndbeyond but alot of the races and stuff dont exist. is there a way to get them
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Only the free basic/SRD materials are available for free.
oh damn
if i had a question about how to use a feature in roll20 where should i ask that?
is there a way to create homebrew character
For everything else you either need to buy the book or be in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing that has access to the book, or you need to use the DDB homebrew tools to recreate the thing you want from your physical books.
I think the two full casters I see suggested are bard (a limited number of spells, so you don't have to get lost learning a ton) or cleric (because they can swap out spells so you're not stuck with bad choices, though that may not matter for a one-shot).
#third-party is the channel to discuss third-party tools and services for D&D.
what do i do after that? how do i create a character with the homebrew content i added
ty
You use the homebrew you created - like let's say you created your own homebrew version of the goblin race and your own homebrew version of the psi knife rogue class, you would select those items for your race and subclass features as you build your character.
so when i create one does it just get added when i get to the part where i choose the race
You would have to select it at the right spot in the character builder.
So yes you are correct.
let me go ahead and try
heyhi! im very new to dnd and ive been looking for a place to start playing. i was told that joining dnd discords is a good way to begin and make a character soo here i am :)). what are some of the first things to establish when beginning?

okay! thank you =)
Check out the links above.
Well, if you have any questions about rules you may not understand then ask here!
ive listened to some dnd podcasts before and ive heard of shapeshifters/changelings, are they a valid race in dnd & what do those kinds of characters generally look like?
i found some pictures but im not sure how accurate they are
Changelings are a playable race in D&D but that depends on the DM if they're allowable in their campaign setting.
does that just mean that sometimes being a changeling can bypass different things that the dm has in place? like certain puzzles and stuff?
which is why they dont allow them?
No, changeling can just change their physical appearance. Nothing more.
Some settings just don't have certain species. The Dragonlance campaign setting doesn't have orcs, for example.
ohhhhh
how many different characters is it best to have? just in case the one you normally use isnt allowed?
also, are there some races that dont work with certain classes, or is it possible for any pair of race and class?
You can make practice characters but don't expect them to use them until you find a DM.
There are no restrictions on race / class.
okay!
one more thing before i go look at the builder 😭 can changelings turn into anything they so please, or can they only turn into things that exist in the campaign setting theyre in?
No, just another humanoid creature.
ahhh okay
ok i lied i have one more thing im so sorry 💀 what are sources (in the character builder)?

huh
Getting in a game can take time. We actually don't play them on this server but have channels to help you connect to groups.
Good luck in class!
ok :<
To be honest, it may take you days to weeks to find a good table to play at. This is because there are waaaaaay more players than Dungeon Masters (DMs).
yea :<
Check out other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels, Facebook D&D groups, reddit, D&D Beyond forums, your local game store, etc.
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online.
It really depends on the setting and source for example Mordekainen ( Source) let's you chage size from medium to small and vice versa, whereas Ebberon allows changes just in appearance. Usually you must have seen the shape you want to turn into. These decisions ( sources used) are made by the DM usually.
can i make new friends :<
is being a dm difficult? what do a dm's plans for a game usually look like?
i ask because whenever i listen to games i can never discern how the dm is intending the game to go, but they always seem to have something prepared. do they just write several stories for every possible action that a player(s) could take, or are they just really good at improv?
im in science class trying to practice playing D&D
It depends on what you want to offer or what your table wants. It's alot of prep work and reading the books. Mainly because you will need to rule on your players actions and keep an eye on the story while also playing the monsters. So it's actually a fair bit of work.
im not sure what to say about D&D
I’m looking to make a warforged 3rd lvl fighter with the echo knight subclass. I’m not sure how to place my stats I rolled. 12, 14, 8, 12, 13, 13
Regarding how the DM intends the game to go, I for one never pigeongole my players into doing anything. I just "script" some encounters to nudge them in the right direction, but otherwise they can do whatever they please if it's within the rules of the game
does the dm just improv it if it doesnt go as planned?
D&D is good, D&D is ummm dragons, ummmmm they made a movie i think, best RPG game made, ummmmm dungenos are cool, humanoid creatures are cool, ummmm what else guys?
I do, heavily. But i also have a plan b ,c, or d just so I can fall back on something in a pinch
That's usually how it works, yeah.
Hello everyone, I'm new to D&D.
All I know are the classes, the d4 to d20, some of the basics, and I know what the DM does.
Nice to meet you all.
dungeon master look like cool, elf is elf, sword goes stab and slash, movie i think is good maybe i dont know
It's more work than just being a player.
As a DM you need to prepare the adventure head of time, schedule the session, manage the players so that everyone get along, know most of the rules (probably need to help guide new players), etc.
Yes, improv is part of D&D. DMs can prepare all they want but they can never prepare for what the players decide to do/say.
It's a combination of different skills such as improv, having a plan, and communication.
For people who want to try DMing, there are some key things that can set yourself up for success:
- Start with a pre-written adventure
- Have a DM screen has rules you that are helpful to access at a glance.
- Have a session session with a group to go over expectations and determine the expectations are compatible with the group.
This comment I think sums it up best
how can i find a dm?
my friends and i already made a group and charcaters, but we r all brand new
Check #looking-for-dm
how do i ask for a dm there?
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
You should cater your stats to focus on a class's strengths.
If the character is not paired to a campaign or game yet, it's best to stick to standard array or point buy to determine your stats.
As dms typically prefer to be present when rolling for stats.
it says i dont have perms to type there
You can type the commands in any channel that has a prompt.
prompt?
Like this channel.
Hmm not to necro this too much but aside from a few very specific exceptions race and class (specifically subclass) don't clash
yeah i did it 😄
congrats
do u know if people r nice to newcomers?
generally yes - I'm nice and easy going with all my players
Depends on the table! It's safe to assume everyone is nice, but some groups might prefer experienced players. It's best to make sure your DM knows you're new to the game when you reach out to them
thats sweet
aight tyy
People are people. There's no guarantee how each table/DM behaves.
Finding a good group to play with is like dating because D&D is a social game you play with others.
We all started new at some point - many folks are fine taking on new-to-D&D players particularly if that new player has spent effort in trying to read and learn the core game rules and mechanics so the rest of the table doesn't have to spend the entire game teaching rather than playing.
if you are new - say so - some DMs do tend to be picky about sheet errors and stuff, any hostility is kind of a red flag
If you join a table without bothering to learn the fundamental rules and hope that the DM will pause the game constantly to teach you, don't be surprised if you won't stay at the table very long. Do your part and learn the game ahead of time — you don't need to memorize all of the rules but familiarize yourself with them.
If you need help making a sheet or going over stuff I'm free
Hello everyone, hows it going?
im doing great ty for asking
To build on this. For new players, it’s important to understand that it takes time and work for a dungeon master to prepare a dnd session. For some, it can take hours to prepare a game. That’s why a great way for a player can show they value the DM is by taking the time to learn the basics of character creation, combat, and understanding how their character works.
And if you’re unsure of something, you can always check the book.
Talking about DMs preparing sessions.
Hey all, first time DM (to be) here. Im in the process of worldbuilding and im just looking to know, how far ahead i should plan.
I have an outline to my plot that's being further developed, possible enemy types for encounters and a boss (and ending) for a first adventure.
Along with some minor NPCs, merchants and such
Is there something else i need to keep in mind/ i should prepare for?
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Prepare what they can reasonable interact with for 2 sessions
I recommend using a pre-written adventure for your first few attempts to build up experience and develop your own skill sets.
That way when you do create your own adventure, you’ll have a deeper understanding of level design, combat balance, and narrative design for an interactive game medium.
The starter set adventures (Lost Mines, Icespire Peak and Stormwreck Isle) are very good for newcomers.
"Is theres something else i should prepare for?" This list is functionally endless. As a rule, players are unpredictable, my go to explanation is you're going to have a seemingly perfect adventure hook in a tavern with the well dressed noble thats out of place. But you accidentally mentioned a shabby goblin in one of the dirtier corners. And now boggles the homeless drunkard goblin is the only NPC your PCs will accept adventures from.
I always tell new DMs that Improv is your best friend. You can only prep so much, so being ready to roll with a curveball will save you.
hello all! its amazing i was never in here before given ive been dming for the past four years straight, but better late than never!!
You can call me Gorm, gormfork, any variation of such, pronouns are they/them, and i hope to get to know at least a few of yall! i need more dnd friends lol
I would also recommend Dragon of Icespire Peak.
For both new players and DMs alike. It would be good to try out linear, non-linear, and sandbox style pre-written campaigns. As that help determine what types of campaigns you naturally gravitate towards.
From what I’ve heard, the three adventures cover those all well.
please ask us questions about the things that confuse you so we can help

Also please keep things focussed on D&D in the discussion channels
Making a character is easy - but I do recommend doing it on DnD Beyond which will guide you through what general options you have
It’s a lot of numbers and words the first time around
other options exist including just plain old pen and paper - but that is much more complex for first time players.
Hello
This is why we recommend you read the Basic rules and/or check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
I'm trying out d&d for the first time EVER
I've set up a class with help from a freind
Using dndbeyond
So my Campaign is My DM's first so we are kinda like his lab rats (all newbs) And we were Isekaied into a world called The Fracture . So we are ourselves, human though stronger then the humans of that relm. So there was no real character creation . We were greated by a masked man (hes some kind of god i think) and was able to ask for two things to aid on this new adventure. I picked Cresent Rose (RWBY) and Dragon rider magic (Eragon). I think you call it homebrew. What channel would be best for that? Sorry to interrupt your discussion.
Which part of this is your question in regards to? The homebrew portion? The character?
Can I join some sort of session to try out D&D by any chance?
Like a full session or just a kind of walkthrough?

just wondering which channel to go to for general discussion and maybe advice on growing my characters skills
Check the #channel-guide of the list of channels.
Mk
#character-discussion Is the place for the last part.
And general is #dnd-discussion is the basic channel
thank you both
Hi!
Our DM asked us to make 5 level character, and I tried to use a tutorial online that said that for ability scores:
"You could assign the scores 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8 to the abilities of your choice"
Is it true even if we begin at level 5?
No, because you’ll have an Ability Score Improvement at level 4.
#homebrew would be the channel to discuss all things homebrew.
Though if you are new to dnd I recommend holding on homebrewing until you have a solid understanding of the rules and mechanics of D&D.
Similar to building a custom part for an engine, you'll need to understand how the different components that make up the engine work beforehand to understand how the custom part will impact the engine.
characters are generally built from lvl 1 and then you walk through the level up process - lvl 4 is the feat/asi depending on DM rules as Skyblade mentioned - if you take a feat you would have the same scores
Ohh thanks!
Asked the question in the wrong channel, but what's the recommend starter currency?
DM will say if you take equipment or gold
The starting currency is predetermined by your chosen background.
That is complicated and depends on things - At the end of the character sheet process on Beyond there is an option for Equipment/Gold which guides you along. Gold is if you will purchase in campaign
Your class and background will tell you how much you start off with.
I goten 4 copper out of no where so that's my start?
What is your chosen background?
Slimeystudio - we'd need the sheet to see
How do I check that, bc I'm using dndbeyond, and I had a friend helped me with this
Does your dndbeyond character sheet have a share button next to the short rest button?
No, I had that thong to private, should I change that?
well for us to see it - you'd need to toggle it to public
Public right?
correct
Yes, if you set it to public. A share button will appear on your character so you can share a link to your character sheet.
Lol I been playing my campaign since Dec so can't hold of lol but I just downloaded The basic rules Pdf
Well for one - since I am not your DM I cannot see your background and selections, but you have a host of magical items selected
Ok few things you should have any magic items, int should be your highest stat and stick to point buy
I picked 7 spells, idk if that's too much
Okay, so you have the haunted one background and you start with 1 silver piece but you get a lot of starting equipment.
Sweet
Zero how could you see that background?
But it looks like you didn't select your starting equipment and selected magic items at random.
Unless your DM approved those magic items, you should remove them and add on the starting equipment provided by your class and background.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/125331809/biYbp3 this is a what a generic wizard should look like
Alr I need to figure that out now
I have Elven Chain
Wand of fireballs
And random potions
that's not a starter item - those were added by you from the inventory selection
If you go to languages, hover over goblin it says Haunted One.
Ik but idk how to get these
Ah thanks Zero - I am so used to seeing everything in my player sheets from being their DM I didn't think to check there
Deleted everything in my inv
Is it legal to have 18 wisdom for 5th level?
It says I can have at most 20, just making sure
That what the randomizer said
It might be better if you take a step back and create the character from scratch so you can take your time to understand the character creation process.
If you are a visual learner, this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
For your stats you should stick with standard array or point buy.
Go into character builder -> Equipment - open the Starter Equipment tab - select Equipment or Gold - and it will auto add the basic class equipment based on your selections.
Added starter equipment
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=IsVR5ojOQ46u9rSp playlist to show how to make 4 of the classes
Ya, figured that out already a second ago
Ah I was a bit too slow I see
yes - you can actually get it at lvl 1 under certain conditions
Thanks 🙂
Randomize number for starting gold and got 12, 120 cp
Nvm, I'm not ranfomizing it. It gave me gold, I'll stick with 1 silver coin
To build on Aery's answer.
At character creation, the highest number a stat can be is 15, before including the bonus from your racial option, if done through point buy or standard array.
If you pick a race that give a plus two to a stat, you can start with a 17 in with a particular stat.
By level 4 you'll have the option to get an Ability Score Increase (ASI) or take a feat. Some feats provide a new ability and a stat increase.
Ohh ok
I couldn't understand why the calculator didn't let me go above 15
That explains it lol
Yep, the bot post above elaborated on abilities.
Dice roll or taking variant human with a half feat also = 18 possible at lvl 1, but that's niche
Or through Custom Lineage.
I'm making a halfling 😅
hello i am new here
Welcome!
hello people! im new and i don't have any experience in dnd. ive been trying to learn the rules and mechanics by myself for now and i had a question: would a bard be too difficult to play for my first campaign?

can i talk to someone and can someone explain how to find and join a campaign?
So DM said he is down, but I still don't know how to build this. I tried looking up Plasmoid subclasses and I couldn't find any info on the wiki or find youtube builds around this. Any tips on how I can find more information on options
Plenty of folk in here can help out if you have questions. We also have the pinned content and #learn-to-play .
As for finding a game are you interested in finding an online or in person game?
online if possible
#character-discussion might be better able to help out suggesting a class and subclass to fit your concept. Sounds like druid and shapeshifting might be one way, but I'm sure folk in #character-discussion can give even better advice.

Hello
ill post there ty ty
So we have the LFG channels here which #find-a-game can give instructions on how to use. People play online using different methods so it can depend on the game you join.
Also looking for a game can take a while alas. Being proactive and messaging DMs about any game you're interested in, especially if you show you have read and understood their post, is one of the best ways to get into a game rather than waiting for DMs to come to you.
You can also look into Adventure League, which is organised play, and look out for Westmarches (community servers with lots of DMs and Players) and Oneshots. These tend to be lower commitment games that you can join and if they don't work out for you, leave- but hopefully after meeting some people you do get along with and stay in contact with. Sometimes the best online groups are formed from slowly networking and putting together a team from other games you've played in.
Hello i am new and i don't have a single knowledge about dnd ,i just found the idea cool can someone guide me?
Looking for a dm or campaign to join kinda new and trying to find some people to play with

Welcome to the hobby
If you are a visual learner, this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
Afterwards, check out the resources in the bot post above and #learn-to-play
The bot post has a intro demo you can try out, a copy of the free basic rules, and a series of great videos that break down dnd.
Awesome thanks for the help
Do you create your charcater after finding a game or before?
Sorry for such a noob question
you can create characters before finding a game, but you should be ready to keep the details vague and open to change as you join a table and talk with your DM how it all can fit into their world
Oki doki thank you
Can someone explain the Races to me i'm having trouble with all this new info at once
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Oki doki thank you
That being said, if you have specific questions once you check it out happy to help!
I love character creation, so im happy to help you set up your first basic sheet to find a game with.
Once you know the basics
So like I'm seriously new to DND, I've only done it like once and had to leave early on.
But like...how can I get back into it I already have a character I'd love to play again and I made them with being flexible to DND in mind, however it's kinda...2...
I just really want to play again and I'm not sure how I could...
if you're looking to join a table you could check #find-a-game?

I’m back from studying science
And I still don’t know how to play D&D
Still my first day learning about D&D

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
do you have any specific questions?
How do I create a character
You should check out the messages above. Reading the Basic Rules is a great place to get started
Do i have to draw my character or no?
That's up to you.
Oh boy better get that handy dandy art book I got and that half broken mechanical pencil
How do I know my weapon prof ability?
Perhaps you should read the rules first since you said you don't know how to play the game.
It doesn't say it on the class pdf I have
Am I annoying you guys?
Adi, those proficiencies can come from race, class or feats
sorry not prof, only ability
In the character sheet it looks like I have to choose an ability
For the weapon
There are no weapon abilities. There are weapon proficiencies, which like Musashi said, is from your class, race, or feats.
For your character, generally STR is a good ability for melee weapons, while DEX good for ranged
You use Str modifier for melee weapons (including weapons that have the Thrown property)
You use Dex modifier for ranged weapons.
You use either Str or Dex modifier for weapons that have the Finesse property.
Do I have to sign up to make character or no?
That doesn't help...more did looking in find a game help...my experience is playing like...1/4 of a 4th of a game or some shit like very begining...on a very simple new players minded game since everyone there except the DM was pretty new to DND...and i kinda want to jump into something similar but not fully just "new" but i have no clue how...and im still new to this stuff so...
I finish reading the basic rules
Also I want to say sorry for bothering you I’m not good with these things I guess I apologize for annoying you all I’m just trying to fit in but I thank you all for your help so far…
So what now?
You don't have to sign up to make a character. You can make them now for practice. But you'll likely need to update/edit any practice characters once you find an actual game

Find a game, and have fun!
The above will take you to this server's method of getting players together but you can also look on other places like Roll20, or the various facebooks pages and subreddits dedicated to LFG (Looking For Group)
