Just start with the free basic rules.
Take it slow, start with the basics.
No, you don't need to buy the DMG. The free Basic Rules has everything you need to get started as both a player and as a DM.
Dont buy anything yet
so again what does a full campaign mean specifically the levels 1 - 8 part what are those levels? what do they mean
Please read the Basic Rules.
kk
It's explained in there.
I was gonna go all chatgpt as “happy you seem excited” stuff but this old man yelling at clouds was way too abrupt and efficient for me to do so
I type fast (sometimes too fast).
is it better to play with figurines and stuff
Dude, just read the rules first. You're getting ahead of yourself.
Using miniatures is completely optional and dependant on your budget. It's a separate hobby onto itself, like collecting dice.
alrighty
Don't invest in the hobby until you know you really enjoy the hobby.
For now, as a newbie, the basic rules are all you need.
Community members you find along the way will help with the rest.
sounds good
I've spend thousands of dollars over the past four decades. D&D can be an expensive hobby if you want it to be (people buy miniatures, dice, books, custom gaming tables, custome DM screens, apps, etc)
Again, the Basic Rules are free. You don't need to spend any money to get started.
Way too many adventures 😅
Which is why folks generally recommend starting with the free stuff. You'll have plenty of time to buy everything if you decide you're into it
Hello what is a bonus action?
a small action you get on your turn
It's a special type of action you can take on your turn only when a feature says you can take it
or you can use Two-Weapon Fighting
both require you to use an Attack as a full action first
Uh, not sure that's a very clear example
Oh I know what it is but when do you get it
You get it whenever a feature says you can perform a bonus action
But only on your turn
Wow that is so awesome
each of your turns has Action, Bonus Action, and Movement
So if I have 1 weapon can I use it to strike twice, once for the action and once for the bonus one
So for example, take Two-Weapon Fighting, which lets you attack as a bonus action
It only let's you take that bonus action to attack if
- You've made an attack using your action
- The attack was made using a light weapon
- You're holding a different light weapon in your other hand
Oh ok
then why does is specify 1+str, and not monk die+str
Generally the only way to use a bonus action is if a feature says "as a bonus action" or "using your bonus action", that kind of thing
So I can't hit twice with a great axe?
Because you made a mistake? There’s nothing that lets just anyone make a BA unarmed strike
ok - I will remove post
Not using your bonus action, but most martials get a feature at level 5 letting them attack twice per attack action
Oh ! Thank you guys so much!
How long does it take to learn enough of the basic rules to start playing for the first time?
Shouldn't take too long.
Very much an individual question, unfortunately.
You should probably read through enough of the first five chapters to put a character together, for a start. You don't have to read it all, stop on a winner. Say you start reading about elves, you like what you see, you don't need to necessarily read up on tieflings and gnomes. Same with class. Check the short descriptions here and here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
You should definitely take a look at the section on ability scores and saving throws, and get the basics of combat down. If you're playing a spellcaster add that to your list too.
thank you!
Hey uhm im trying to create a new Thread for looking for an dm but its tellin me that the service isnt responding IS there anything im might doing wrong?
Does anyone have tips for being a DM
I'm a fantasy writer so I'm kinda good with stories but I don't know how to translate them to dnd
Sure!
- make situations, not stories
- give the characters a reason to get involved
- play to find out what happens
I'd also suggest looking up the Five Room Dungeon method, which essentially boils down to:
The party enter a situation in an interesting location but encounter a complication.
Coming from a writer’s perspective, I think some good advice is to write situations, goals, and scenarios rather than stories for your players.
Writing stories tends to encode a set sequence of events & outcomes that lead to railroading.
I just learnt that flying lily pads are a thing
Hey, I am relatively new to dnd and I am currently looking for some sessions, I could watch, apart from youtube videos like critical role. I just want to gain some experience on how to approach sessions with smaller groups of 4-5 people (with almost no Roleplay experience and not that much practical dnd experience)
hi, i am compleeeetely new to this.. i've been wanting to get into D&D for yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears but never really was able to, i have absolutely no clue where to start, or even how to go about making my own character, so if there are any tips and stuff i could have to get me started that would be awesome!
feel free to dm me or ping me in any channel necessary if you wanna help me, would love to eventually start playing with some people but i have to learn how it works first
Howdy. Try this:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
as for the character: dndbeyond has a relaatively easy-to-learn and free sheet-creator, that you could use
And here's something I said earlier:
You should probably read through enough of the first five chapters to put a character together, for a start. You don't have to read it all, stop on a winner. Say you start reading about elves, you like what you see, you don't need to necessarily read up on tieflings and gnomes. Same with class. Check the short descriptions here and here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
You should definitely take a look at the section on ability scores and saving throws, and get the basics of combat down. If you're playing a spellcaster add that to your list too.
ooh okay, thanks :D
about this, is there a way to find sesions with someone thats realy experienced that can teach and guide through the sesion? or maybe just a friend that could teach me? i began reading the rule book and stoped after chapter 2 because i forgot half of the first chapter (no i dont have dimension)
i just wanted to say the same thing so thanks guys, i will check out Your tips too
i also wondered about this seeing as it would be much easier to have a session with someone experienced and willing to really guide you through it
There's not really a specific way. Your best bet is to look here in #looking-for-players for games that advertise themselves as suitable for new players, check out Roll20, Reddit and the D&D Beyond forums.
As an example, I recently did a session where the advert read:
[2] What style of game does the group play?
Introductory dungeon crawl for beginners
So look out for something like that.
and what if you know practicly nothing but don't want to read the way to much pages of rules of d&d? sorry to be such a pain by the way..
There are video guides too. The Handbooker Helper series is linked in the Dyno post above (#dnd-newcomers message).
i was looking through the races thingy on dndbeyond, and i found one that i think looks pretty cool, but on the character creation thing, it doesn't show up
is it like a paid feature?
like is there a limit on which options i can choose without paying for a "premium account" or something like that..?
Which race was it?
The Basic Rules give you access to nine races (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#ChoosingaRace). After that, you'll need to explore the DDB Marketplace for sourcebooks with more options.
changeling
Not part of the free content, I'm afraid.
another question: what if you want to be a rouge that uses magic?
in the Player's Handbook (PHB) there is a rogue subclass called Arcane trickster, which is pretty much that. A rogue with some wizard spellcasting
subclasses? :0
every class gets subclasses. you pick one at a certain level, depending on the class. Rogue picks one at level 3. The free rogue one is called Thief, if you wanna see how that works
subclasses are called different things for different classes. Barbarians have a "path of the X". Wizards have schools, bards have colleges, clerics have domains etc.
subclass is just the overarching name
That explains many things
Can't wait for my players to reach level 3. Gotta finish 2 quests for that though as we do milestones
Well, if they're your players, you can always give them short quests.
Hi. I'm looking for a little guidance on gaining more knowledge about psions and necromancers. I'd like to learn through conversation vs reading articles. Let me know if any of you have expertise in these areas. 🤓
Are you looking for lore ( #dnd-lore ) or how to make such a character ( #character-discussion )?
Hey @wild onyx I've created a character, she's from Kara Tur and is a nomadic student of nature and psionics. I'm trying to find out what she can and can't do, my current DM isn't proficient in psions so I'm basically doing whatever I want, but I'd like a better understanding of the boundaries.
Well, what class/ subclass are you? What features make you psionic?
Hmm I'm relatively new, so I might make a mistake in answering you. As far as I understand, my class is Psion? At level one? She has high scores in intelligence and wisdom, and psychic abilities like mind thrust and psionic blast.
Are you playing Fifth Edition?
Yes, I started out playing 2nd with one DM and then moved into 5th with another.
Don't know what to do. I'm a very new DM
On a side note, I also have a question about AI or Midjourney art on the server. Is there a reason it is forbidden?
Several, and too complex to discuss in the newcomers channel. Take it to #non-dnd-topics if you're interested.
OK, I'm going to hazard a guess this is something homebrew.
Same advice as with any class: your features will tell you what they do. Read over that carefully, take notes if you like, whatever works for you.
Five Room Dungeons, mate. Google it up.
Will do
That's what I'm doing so far. I'm wondering if I can throw her into different campaigns and learn what she can do through trial and error. Do you recommend this approach?
Not with a homebrew class, no. If you're looking to "server hop" stick to the official published content.
Okay. So stick to the game I'm in. I'm not sure I understand your notes when it comes to character development.
I have notes on character development?
Could you elaborate please?
No I meant I'm trying to develop my character, and I'm not sure I understood your notes "your features will tell you what to do." I feel a bit stuck with my character as a novice.
I'm wondering if I should maybe bring up a specific scenario at #dnd-discussion to better understand what she can do.
the character’s class/race/etc features do what they say mechanically, but nothing more unless the DM permits, and if it’s a homebrew class it will be hard to see what exactly those mechanical limits look like
You implied you weren't certain what you could do with your powers and neither was the DM. My answer there was to read your class features to see what they could do. Does it have a rule for using telekinesis, say? If it doesn't, you can't do it. If it does, it should say how strong that is, the range, how frequently you can use it and so on.
Developing your character as a person is a whole different thing.
your best bet is to read the descriptions carefully and maybe create notes that “trim the fat”, taking out the flavor text to only focus on what it does mechanically - and for any confusing parts ask your dm how they would run it
Interesting! Thank you. I have a feeling it's a "world is my oyster" kind of situation, I pull out a telekinesis or psionic blast and the DM seems to make room for it.
I suppose my question was about the boundaries of my movements, and I'm hearing that that wholly depends on the DM and their style?
Yes. There can be considerable range from purely rules as written to virtually improv with d20s. It all depends on what you and your party (including the DM) enjoy and are comfortable with.
Personally I tend to play it close to the book. I don't want to discourage creativity but feel it can be expressed within a consistent framework. Also I tend to run games for random folk, so it helps to have that common baseline for reference. If I did a long game with a stable group, I'd be more open to changing things up.
Adding to the good suggestions thus far: Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/), watch Matt Colville's first handful of "Running the Game" videos, and search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice as this topic comes up often.
I have my own suggestions here: #dnd-newcomers message
Typically speaking, powers and abilities, and anything else that might affect combat are handled strictly by the rules, rather than being allowed to just make stuff up. If you want to do something outside the rules in this regard, we call that “homebrew” and even when using homebrew you can’t just make stuff up on the spot. The way that typically works is that you create your custom set of powers and abilities beforehand, and then still unlock things through leveling up and such exactly the same way you would if using normal rules. The only difference being it’s stuff you created instead of stuff the game designers created. However, it is HIGHLY recommended that beginners do not use homebrew until they are more experienced with the game. You wouldn’t trust someone playing a video game for the very first time to design a balance patch, or a person driving a car for the very first time to fix a car engine, right?
That makes sense. I've only encountered two DMs and this current one is attempting something long term.
I wouldn't mind being guided with tighter boundaries but this DM seems to be very homebrewy.
Do you recommend a novice to D&D learns by simply staying in one campaign and deepening the experience, or playing simultaneous campaigns?
You can play as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, but most people only have time in their schedule for one campaign, where they play once a week. Playing in 2 campaigns is quite rare
That has nothing to do with experience level. It’s just tough to set aside 4 hour chunks of time multiple days a week
Thank you. It's nice to find a place where I can just ask my noob questions and get direct engagement about it.
If I get stuck in my campaign I'll recreate the scenario at #dnd-discussion
That’s what we’re here for! It’s fun to help people out
Makes us feel smort.
How do people use voice for dnd? Are they like roleplaying with their voice? If so I could never do that cause I’d be so awkward. Most people seem to use voice but im more interested in text based
yeah, they just roleplay with their voice, like acting out their character
you also use your voice to talk to the DM and the other players out of character. D&D is all about the DM describing what your character sees, hears, and feels; you telling them what your character is trying to do; and resolving those actions with rules mechanics. There's a lot of asking and answering questions.
Speaking in character is a small part of it and isn't mandatory.
You're not obligated to do any special voice/accents. Not everyone is a trained actor.
However, if you insist on do a distint voice for your PC I recommend the Youtube video, "How To Create 100 Distinctly Different Voices" where you just do simple tricks of changing your pitch, speed, volume, etc of your voice:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVmAEezr6ao
If im currently in no D&D sessions but i want to do something with D&D..
Is there anything i can do?
Keep looking for games. There are other D&D-related Discord servers that have their own LFG channels. Most D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers.
Check other D&D servers advertised in #looking-for-community for other D&D games
Assuming you've read the rules, you could become familiar with the lore: wikis, novels, videos. Make a bunch of characters, either using D&D Beyond, a physical or digital character sheet, or just developing their personality/backstory in writing. You could watch recorded games; you can find a bunch on Twitch and/or YouTube.
Or you could try solo D&D. Ginny Di has a good video summarizing how it goes, and you can find free adventures to play through by searching solo and adventure or play on DMsGuild.
how do premade characters eve work
You have a character you don't build, and you play them as best you can using the info you're given (personality, if any, background, etc.). But there's no right or wrong way to do it!
Many of the starter sets have pre-made characters to help people get to playing without going through the characer-creation process (which can feel complex enough for some). Or it might be the case in a one-shot or other short campaign where the DM has a specific storyline in mind, and players can decide if they're into that or not.
You may be interested to learn about the difference between active and descriptive roleplaying: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Roleplaying
In short, active is responding in-character and descriptive is narrating what your character says and does like an author (so instead of your character saying, "I'm fed up with all this blather! Get ready to fight!" you the player might say something to the effect of, "Bundl expresses his boredom and raises his axe, preparing to strike.").
There are also play-by-post games that are run entirely through text. This article covers the basics: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp
I'm new to the dnd scene but I do make DND style games. Is there a specific place or any way that I can search for players? I'm looking for players for a few different games. From DND style games to card games to zombie survival games etc.
No - this server only allows advertising for D&D games (we are the official D&D server run by Wizards of the Coast/D&D)
None of these games are for sale or advertising. Simply homemade games. But I understand, this server is for DND gameplay only.
You got it. If you'd like to advertise for other game systems or different kinds of games (card games, etc.), I'd suggest finding a more generic TTRPG server and searching/advertising there.
You could look at some of the servers advertised in #looking-for-community as some of them may offer other games besides D&D (although any advertisements here must be for D&D games)
Hello everybody. I'm new to the server and curious about playing DND for the first time. I have an idea for the kind of character I want to make and I am curious what I should do to possibly get started in playing a campaign.
Thank you for your suggestion. I appreciate the idea. I will try that

cool!
If you want a more personalized guidance as well, feel free to PM me 🙂 . It can be a daunting experience sometimes without anyone walking alongside you
how is the best way to find new groups that fit with your needs? i have been wandering around for 2 days and havent even been in contact with someone that runs a group..
Reach out to people that are advertising games and ask questions

☝️ good place to start
Also the D&D Beyond forums have a looking for players & groups section, and there are options such as StartPlaying, Demiplane, roll20, and r/lfg
Can I always play as the same character? Whats the best way to create one? How detailed do I have to be?
- No, there's no way to guarantee your character will be suitable for a game and you may have to play a different character
- Follow the step by step guide in the Basic Rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
- As detailed as you want, but remember that there's a sweet spot between too little and too much detail
so first I'd have the gm tell me about the games setting, right? And after that I can create my own character?
Usually that's a sensible approach, yeah
Means your character fits the world, makes sense there
so its not like id first have to apply with a character that would fit into the story
You might be asked for a concept and then work with the DM to tweak it. But there's no one-size-fits-all approach.
It's not impossible that a DM might advertise with a brief overview of the world and expect characters as part of the application, but it's certainly not the norm
alright thank you very much!
If you want a more personalized guidance as well, feel free to PM me . It can be a daunting experience sometimes without anyone walking alongside you
sure!

Are we allowed to ask people to personally help with things? Like, I’m struggling hard trying to figure out this character thing and reading or watching videos isn’t really clicking with me :/
Ask questions and people will answer
Sorry for the question, I am having a little bit of confusion about preparing spells.
I understand that a class that prepares spells has a list of spells somewhere (a book for example). It then uses a long rest to choose which one to bring in the game, or memorizing to be more accurate (a wizard for example prepares a maximum of INT mod + level spells).
The thing that confuses me is: a class that does things like this can't change the list whenever it wants with spells found of their class list?
In the case of a warlock or a druid, they have to simply wait for a level up to change one spell.
A class that prepares them does the same thing?
I understand that a class that prepares spells has a list of spells somewhere
some classes do, some don't
There are three broad types of spellcaster
- "Known spell" casters: these spellcasters get a spell or spells on levelling up and that's it, the spell is locked in until they next level up at which point they can change a fixed number (almost always 1). Ranger and warlock are examples of this
- "Prepared" casters: at the end of a long rest, these casters can pick a number of spells to have prepared for that day. They can change as many or as few each day. Paladins and clerics are examples of this
- Wizards: wizards are both because they have a spellbook that they add spells to like a known caster (except they can add spells outside of levelling up), from which they prepare their spells like a mini prepared caster
Ohhh, ok, I see. I was trying to understand this by reading from the wizard class description. Thank you!
Since im the DM, could I make rewards that my players get after successfully completing a quest? And could I also make up my own items/weapons to give them? With appropriate stats/effects of course
Yes you can
You are Santa Claus and you decide when christmas is
why isnt lookin for dm shown anymore?
It went for an epic adventure...
Joking aside, check the #server-announcements.
I just started
Congrats

I've been playing on and off since the nineteen eighties.
Maybe
Do I understand correctly that (cross)bow attacks have a disadvantage when the enemy is at below the small range?
its at disadvantage if you are further than the number on the left for range and if you are 5 feet of the target
so if it says 80 (320) then if you are further than 80 feet, you have disadvantage
So 5 to 80 hits normally?
10 to 80
Why 10?
Because 5 feet or less is at disadvantage
So 10-80 feet is your "can shoot without disadvantage" range.
Ohhh
At 5 feet the enemy is right there at melee range and likely trying to knock your weapon away
Hi there. Im new to DND but I've made a fun character I would love to play in a fun campaign. I saw that the Find a game channel is currently not working. So how may I reach out to possibly find a game to play? Im also open to dm's from those hosting a game and are interested in having someone play. Im open to any story or game as long as it reasonably works with my character, albeit my character is pretty maleable and flexible.
I'm glad my players stood directly in front of the giant crossbows so I in fact didn't do a mistake lol
It is working but only for the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and #paid-looking-for-game channels.
Looking for DM channel is currently down.
So use the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channel to find a game.
ty kindly!
yo hey guys whats all of your character ideas for your first games?
I tried making something similar to what i played in baldurs gate 3. A vengeance paladin with a grudge against the undead and is haunted by a spirit that tempts him to do evil. In spite of his desire to be a hero, a darker part of himself longs to spill rivers of blood.
Hi I'm new to dnd any tips
I think it’s worth keeping in mind a few things regarding the social nature of the game:
- No one is the main character, so try to cooperate with your fellow players.
- Similarly, the DM is not your enemy. Try to respect and lean into everyone’s fun rather than privileging your own.
- When there’s a problem, in game or out of it, communicate to solve it.
- Be mindful of others’ boundaries and your own. It’s a more active, intimate form of entertainment, so be respectful when people say what they don’t want to deal with.
My list of general player tips is here: #dnd-newcomers message
General DM advice here: #dnd-newcomers message
Ok
Is there anyone to help me DM a game or start one?
Try some of the community servers advertised in #looking-for-community - they are often looking for DMs and players for their community D&D games and may even have an option for having co-DMs.
Yeah many times those community games have a "you'll work with another DM as you get started" bit
How much time does it take for normal game?
Many D&D game sessions take between 3-4 hours.
wow
But every group and game is different - some can be much shorter and others can be all-day (or weekend) events.
It's a social collaborative storytelling RPG game
Uh... set your expectations that you likely won't find a game immediately.
Also scheduling can be the hardest challenge for any group to be able to play D&D.
So with that said...
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Thank you for your time
Maybe a dumb question, but for that minor illusion cantrip one of my players needs a piece of fleece. Do I just make him find some sheep he could cut off some wool from?
almost always, the character has a component pouch or an arcane focus that removes the need to go hunting for sheep to fleece 😁
Surprisingly he doesn't. He went with the wise bard combination
Or we just missed something in character creation
Bards should be able to use their instruments as spell foci
But for his wizard spells he would need a wizard focus/component pouch
A common problem with multiclassing is a need to go shopping for the base necessities
(spellbook, wand, hat, etc.)
For some spells you still need materials, no?
That he doesn't need. He uses a guitar to focus his magic
But does the thing you use for focusing your magic also removes the need of materials?
they still need to provide expensive components. The instrument fulfills the need for components that don't have a listed cost.
A guitar is their spellcasting focus, it will replace the material components of spells that need them (unless that material component has a GP cost)
Gold cost or consumed are the components that foci generally can't replace
So they can't use a spell that needs like "a pearl worth 100gm" but they COULD use minor illusion because fleece doesn't have a cost?
Yeah, exactly
Either I didn't read the rules good enough or it never was said
Probably the first thing
Its in there somewhere
Spellcasting chapter, iirc. Or if not there, in the explanation of foci in equipment
As a Yugioh played it seems I always skipped the second thing
Hello, am I interrupting something or can I request some assistance with something I've been struggling with?
feel free to post away
We're basically done with my thing
My issue is probably going to take a while to fully break down but I'll try to be quick about it, I am at work after all
Hey! I’m new to dnd, how do I get into the game and find a campaign to play properly? I played a campaign with some old friends that lasted about 2 months, but it ended because we all got busy and some moved away so we just can’t continue. Now I’m having trouble finding online groups to play with without getting stage fright or worrying about not knowing anything (because my old dm kinda held my hand the whole time we would play)
The Basic Rules in the pinned messages of this channel and #learn-to-play should help with learning the game itself. Looking for others to play with begins in #find-a-game; read through fully.
If you feel like knowing the rules better would help build your confidence up to start looking for games, you can make your way through the pinned posts in this channel (click the pin icon)
Are you looking for an online or in-person game to join?
But in any case, to put simply I've been trying to homebrew a simple universal system that depends mainly on DM/PC cohesion and agreements (PC created abilities and Spells, simplified stats and whatnot to avoid overwhelming rules) along with a steampunk-ish sci-fi/grimdark fantasy setting to accommodate a majority of TTRPG players however I have been working on this for 7 years and I'm not sure if my system is structured enough and I know for certain that my setting isn't fully fleshed out because I've started from scratch numerous times and the only thing I really have to show for it is the current iteration of my project and the characters I've been transferring from system to system to try and make it work. I feel like this version is the one I want to get a group together for but I have no idea how to assemble a group bigger than simply my friend and mother as my social anxiety and possible impostor syndrome forces me to go along with. I want a bigger group to verify that my system and setting are developed enough to actually be fun and eventually write a story or novel or whatever in the far future. I understand this is a difficult task as I've been working on this for about 7 years now but I literally can't stop because when I do it haunts me. Sorry for the dump but I need to figure this out before I set up another session with my afore mentioned mother or friend
Ahh thank you I’m sorry I somehow missed that channel
Preferably online
Roll20 has a built in tool for finding games on its platform. Otherwise you could go looking for the various facebook pages and subreddits that exist for getting players together. The more places you look in at once the faster you'll find a game, ime
You might be helped by looking for other TTRPG/tabletop design Discord servers or communities.
Ah I see, and are there any tips for getting over that fear of playing with complete strangers? Especially when you’re inexperienced
It's a game that's supposed to be fun. That's why everyone else is showing up, not to judge you. And this is essentially make-believe, so try not to worry about it being awkward. It is, but that awkwardness will lessen over time as social dynamics settle.
I have no idea where to look for those communities, and my previous attempts haven't really gone anywhere
Also, when it comes to building a character, should I create them only level 1? Should I make them like level 3? Or adjust to whatever everyone else is doing
Un yeah I see
Level 1 is the safest bet, some DMs might have you start higher but thats something to address once you get that info
Ah okay cool
That's up to the DM to decide. Make practice characters at level 1 for now
Thank a bunch all 🫂
Discord has an "Explore Discoverable Servers" function. Search for tabletop, TTRPG, and/or design. There's also r/RPGdesign on Reddit.
I don't know that the nervousness ever entirely goes away for some folks. But if you can get yourself to try it once, it'll likely be easier next time. Worked for me at least 😁
i wish all my local game stores didnt make all games pay to play
Stores are out to make money remember
yes but cant make money if you drive all your potential gamers away
This is probably not the channel for this discussion.
Hello
The best thing you can do for yourself is to have a session zero with the people you are going to play with, even for a single session adventure, and go over some key things:
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
This channel is for learning about the basics of D&D. It's not strictly "where new folks come to talk"!
so no new players have to deal with games that make you pay to play ok got it im glad to know that
That's not what they're saying
It's just that #dnd-discussion is better suited to general D&D talk, regardless of whether it's about pay to play issues or otherwise
We can't help you with your game store requiring payment, beyond suggesting trying other avenues instead. And this channel is for helping new players get started
Only if you are searching for DMs who want to get paid because they are professionals
Where is that? I'm on mobile so it might not work that way for me
I genuinely have no idea what the mobile interface looks like, but I expect you can find the answer via Google!
Naturally, people dont want to spend more money to engange with their hobby than they need to. In my experience with gamestore-founded games, they often only start out at the store. After a few weeks everyone might decide they're comfortable enough to start meeting at someones place, or another venue with less cost.

To build on this, some libraries host free dnd sessions and events.
So it's worth visiting your local library.
At the very least, you'll likely find some great D&D books to check out.

What is overwhelming you and what is confusing you?
Just wondering for some advice on finding DnD games, ive used the find a game channels but it still is hard to find a good and constant campaign unfortunately and I don't particularly want to do Communities right now so I stay away from that any other ideas for how I can look for games?
I maybe able to help. Feel free to PM

Ah yeah im used to Direct Message.
Yeah I've already read all this, was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas outside this. But thanks.
I find that what helps finding a good and constant campaign is dependent on how you try to form a campaign group with others and setting up the steps to create a campaign that is compatible with the group.
Alright thanks, that actually does help a bit.
While this doesn't cover everything, do you know your own answers to these questions?
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)

You don't need to know or have to answer them now, but the answers to these questions can help you find the campaign that is right for you.
Great.
When you're trying to form a group.
Go over these questions and learn their answers to these questions.
Then try to answer these questions as a group.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
Yeah that helps, thanks. Ill remember this.
I'd also recommend playing in Dnd Adventurers League.
It's a great way to meet many different players and DMs while you're playing through rules as written adventure modules.
It can help you figure out what DMing and Playstyles you are compatible with.
Plus forming a group with people you have established history with can contribute to a group lasting for a long time.
Alright I will see about that
I have a question.
There is a skills section in the Class Features.
It says to choose two skills from a list.
What do we do with those skills?
The instruction seems minimal.
You can learn about Adventurers League on this post on dnd beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
The server even has channels dedicated to AL such as #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690
Plus you can play it in person or online.
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
That's because you were reading a section about a specific class.
The basic rules covers it in a separate chapter focused on using ability scores: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills
Thank-you
Are the skills listed in the background additional skills?
Also the background says you can customize your background. Then can the player choose AN
I made a guide with a bunch of options for where to find games. You can also search for Discord servers using keywords; d&d, dnd, lfg, and tabletop will get you results.
ANY two skills other than the ones listed?
In other words can you replace the two skills listed in background with any other skills?
The bot post above lists all the available skills.
While your race and class can provide you with proficiency in a set number of skills.
Your background allows you to pick more skills to be proficient with from that list.
And yes, if you do a custom background, you can pick which 2 skills you want
Ok, so to summarize the skills listed in the background are in addition to the class.
Right now, it seems like an endless number of rules as I am just starting my DM journey.
For example a race may grant proficiency in Perception.
Your class could provide you proficienty in Survival and Insight.
And your background could provide you proficiency in Stealth and Sleight of Hand.
Think of it more like LEGOS.
You can can use them to build something simple like a box.
But you can also use them to build something complex, like a crane.
You're not expected to know all the rules or have them memorized.
But as you build up your experience and understanding, things will begin to click into place.
Also just curious is there a summary sheet of rule changes from one version to the next in DnD?
Nothing I'm aware of. It would be hard to summarize them on one sheet, honestly
So do people typically read all of the books again?!
depends. For a full version, yes, as it's generally a complete overhaul. However once you understand basic concepts which often carry across like d20 rolls and ability scores, it's easier.
If you're referring to the 2024 update coming out later this year, that's just a minor update, so I imagine most people will just skim the rules to look for changes

I’m new to dnd as well and was looking to create a character. Are the races on the website the only available races? I was looking to create something similar to a winged human (not avaian, human)
Those are the official ones, assuming you mean D&D Beyond. Whether you can use fan-made material is up to the DM you play with.
So if i were to use the online character creator sheet on the website, would i just say variant human or is that something else?
Variant human is a specific sub-type.
If you want to see all the official races that have been created thus far, feel free to check out the race section in dnd beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
There are a lot of options to choose from.
Alright, one last question; if i wanted to play as a winged aasimar, the only one i saw available was the variant aasimar, and i didn’t see anything in wings under their description. How would i play as a regular aasimar?
There is no version of aasimar that gets wings by default (outside of one that Adventurer's League created for season 9 only). The normal aasimar (which aren't a free option and that's probably why you didn't see them) only get temporary wings at best as part of their racial abilities. Depending on which subtype you select.
So there are no other humanoid species free that have wings by default?
None of the free races have wings, as far as I recall
Except maybe the Elemental Evil version of Aaracokra. Not sure if those show up as free on DDB
and all the winged races are either avian or fiendish
you could reflavour them however
Rule Lawyer here!
Enjoy #dnd-rules where only RAW is accepted
Thanks
so for a nnew player u guys suggest starting off with the basic rules right if u dont know anything?
its just long cuz its like 180 pages idk how much to go into or if theres a better way to learn how to actually play
Basic rules or the starter box is a great way to get started too
Starter box will get you up and playing right away. You could always follow it up with basic rules after.
Ah ok which adventure is it with the starter box?
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle?
would everything be explained so i can start playing right away with the starter set? even if i dont know anything about how the levels or making the characters work etc
I got the one with the lost mines of phandelver but that was like a long time ago. Not sure which one is the newer one, but yes the starter set gets you playing and teaches you the basic concepts of the game without ever having played dnd before
gotcha
I know the first starter box did, but it came with pregenerated characters to play with.
It's nice for people who want to start playing right away.
You could check out video explainers like Handbooker Helper and WASD20’s Rules School on YouTube. But if you use pre-made characters, especially for a single session, you really only need to read chapters 5, 7, 8, and 9. Chapter 10 if you’re a spellcaster. The final few chapters are strictly for the DM.
thanks ill check them out to get familiar with how to play
Hi I'm interested in dnd since dbd collaborated with dnd
So I bought baldur's gate
They are only superficially similar, to play dnd you need to actually read dnd rules
Great game by the way. If you need some personalized guidance, feel free to DM me
to be fair imo its pretty good at covering the basics if you’ve never played dnd before. and it’s fun lol
It's fun. But they changed enough rules that it can teach bad habits along with the good ones
Wish the way Berserk Barbarian worked in DND was like in Baldur's Gate tho...

Your known spells are the spells your character has access to. It does differentiate between classes a bit though.
For a Sorcerer, every spell they've learnt as they level up is considered a Known Spell. For a cleric however, every spell available to them at their current level is considered a Known Spell, but can only prepare a handful of spells from that massive list each day.
Hello, I am relatively new to D&D and am looking to DM a game with my friends, I want to get the player handbook and a couple other books from the D&D Beyond website but the price is a little off-putting to get right into it, does anyone know a way to get promo codes to make the price a little less of an obstacle or recommend which ones I should incrementally get in order as time goes on? Thanks in advance!
D&DBeyond will occasionally have sales but outside of that you and your friends can try starting out with the free basic rules (in this channel’s pins)
D&DBeyond also has quite a few free adventures
Thanks for the advice, will look into that!
how do characters work?
In general you can make your characters look however you want, within limits and expectations set by your DM & sometimes table
And certainly not to gain a mechanical advantage (i.e. wanting to make a 10’ tall character)
so i can be a guinea pig
No
aw
You still have to choose from official character options + any homebrew options your DM might have or allow
I mean I had a session one time where a dude was a straight up rat so
That is an example of homebrew
so this is allowed
Not necessarily
aw
Depends on the dm I guess
This is something you will have to talk to your DM about.
dm?
You character is comprised mainly of your race, class(es), and background
It's safe to use the playable races from the free Basic Rules.
The guy who like controls the session
oh ok
DM = Dungeon Master
Dungeon master. You may want to have a read of the basic rules
ok so how do i join a game here
The Dungeon Master is the one who controls the game world. If they decide there are no elves in their world then there are no elves.
I highly recommend you read the free Basic Rules before you look to join a game. That would increase your chances of being accepted to a table.
There is no official guinea pig race, but there are some equivalents. Leonin & Tabaxi are feline humanoids. Shifters are humanoids that have varying degrees of bestial features, which you may be able to flavor as having a guinea-pig-like head
ok
oh.
well then it all goes down to the DM
Of course, it’s up to your DM to determine if these race options are available.
well im a barbarian sooo
Yes and no, it’s expected most if not all characters options are to be allowed by default
Barbarian would be a class option; Leonin, Tabaxi, and Shifters are all race options
ohh ok
whatever a guinea pig is closest to ill be that
Again, please read the free Basic Rules.
ok

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
ok
Can you rephrase your question?
Are you asking how to use slash-commands?
If so, that's not a D&D question, that's a general "how do I use discord?" question
y'know, there are hamster npcs, and players can make a character with npc stats and one of the 'sidekick' classes (expert, spellcaster, and warrior), which are basically slightly simpler classes, except they don't include barbarian so you wouldn't be able to play as a barbarian with npc stats unfortunately
oh ok
Helloo
Bonjour
How does someone find a game to play when they know next to nothing about the game?
Online
Perchance
?tag new online
That can help give instructions on how to find online games, and we also have #find-a-game here!
Finding online games does require some patience and occasionally a few attempts. There are new player friendly games you can find. It's also an idea to look out for shorter campaigns or even oneshots (games intended to last only one or two sessions) and adventure league (official organised play where if your character is AL legal you can hop in and out of AL tables that have space for your PC).
These tend to be lower commitment games that you can join and if they don't work out for you, leave- but hopefully after meeting some people you do get along with and stay in contact with. Sometimes the best online groups are formed from slowly networking and putting together a team from other games you've played in.
Being proactive and messaging DMs about any game you're interested in, especially if you show you have read and understood their post, is one of the best ways to get into a game rather than waiting for DMs to come to you.
just a quick question is there an age mininum with the whole dnd stuff?
The manufacturers recommend it to players 12+, but beyond that, it's really what the table is comfortable with. Some people teach their young kids D&D, and youth programs sometimes use it for learning teamwork and reading/math skills.
Plenty of folks may not feel comfortable playing with minors, but that doesn't mean none are. You just have to keep looking!
Also, do be aware that you should not share your age on the server per the rules.
oh shet sorry
how difficult is it to be an dm?
'cause i might try to DM my first party and i fell unsure wether or it is or isn't a good idea
There's a definite learning curve to it, but I like Matt Colville's philosophy: it's fun and not nearly as hard as people from the outside think. (I couldn't imagine being a DM myself when I first started playing, and I've now run hundreds of hours of gameplay.)
It just takes (among other qualities/skills) a willingness to make mistakes and learn from them, the ability to communicate, and a group who's willing to be patient and learn as things move along. The mindset section of this How to GM Guide has some good advice (https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet).
aight thanks
I feel somewhat comfortable saying that i will try to be the DM of my very first dnd campaign
Good luck! If you want more in-depth advice about that, you should post in #dm-discussion!
Hello guys, I'm completely new and I have never played at all, i created a character a few days ago but i haven't used him.
I'm planning to dm a group of friends soon
they're all first timers and i'm also first timers
I've already made the flow of the story but what scares me is the sandboxing of my players and i would just go blank when they start fighting

would you suggest doing one-shots first?
nvm i wont not self assure enough
Hi there, new DM here. Does anyone of you have some maps for the Icespire Peak Campaign?
Hi.
I am completely new to D&D and TTRPG's in general.
I'm interested in trying D&D mostly because of the idea of telling stories and having so much freedom in what can happen throughout the tale.
I already made a character sheet using D&D beyond and am wondering what the nexxt step(s) are.
Have you read through the basic rules yet?
no but i've watched a few different videos on how to play the game.
3 of which being a series that shows the actual gameplay itself.
When im creating a character, do i role a D20 for stats?

Before I answer that question, have you already found a DM to play with?
where do i find the rules?
In the bot post 4 posts above this one!
One-shots are great, but I wouldn't worry about it resolving in a single sitting. Pacing is one more plate to juggle, and a new DM has enough to worry about.
are there any groups of people that are comfortable with guiding someone through the game and letting them pick up on the rules as they play?
Since i feel that's one of the easier ways to learn a game while also being able to enjoy it.
does Anyone know what the 2024 rework entails?
You can likely get more info in #1026901431132885064 rather than here.
While it is possible to learn some things as you go, you will be expected to put in at least a little effort to learn things before joining a game. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
Yes
No i was just curious bc i use to to dnd in school and he had the party role a d20 to figure out ststs

alright, i'll give it a quick read in a few.

I do not understand it
Read it ig?
You can look for games to join in #looking-for-players
You can find other D&D servers that may have games you can join in #looking-for-community
What aspect did you find confusing?
Everything
I don't understand how it works
Can you give any specific examples of parts of #find-a-game you don't understand?
The information there does guide you through the process of making a post
How does one like join a game 😀 I see find a game but how do I join a game
through the provided details in the post concerning the DM posting?
Alright well basic summary:
#find-a-game is the channel with instructions and advice on how to find a game. Its not the channel that you actually use for looking for said game.
The channel has advice for how to find games in other communities as well, but if you want to look for a game in this server, then you need to use our server bot. By inputting the command that corresponds to the channel you want to make a post in, the bot will give you a form you can fill out. Once you fill it out, that will generate a post for you, and then DMs or Players can read your post and reach out to you if they think you'd be a good fit for there game
And if you want to be proactive, you can read through some of the posts other people have make in #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players and respond to the ones that look interesting to you
i'd recommend re-reading the post and seeing if you have to Private message them or apply through a thread exc.
Dms handle player recruiting differently
You reach out to the person running that game and ask them if you can join. D&D is a social game. There is no button to click or queue to join. You just have to talk to people.
And also: you arent obligated to stay with a group if you dont feel comfortable or attempts to resolve table problems dont play out how you wish they do
your enjoyment and comfort is the upmost importance in a social game
Hey I’m brand new to dnd and have no clue what’s going on or what to do and would love to learn how to play and not sure how to navigate around the server if someone could help me that would be greatly appreciated
The resources above and #learn-to-play will help you with knowing how to play! As for the rest, click around, read the channel descriptions, observe the conversations going on. Jump in if/when you feel ready.
Thank you so much I appreciate it a lot!
Hey I’ve tried following along the rules and trying to learn how to play but it’s not working well for the reading is there anyway I could learn with some help from someone
same
Some folks might volunteer, but generally there are too many new people joining to offer one-on-one instruction. If reading is proving difficult, the Handbooker Helper video series (linked above) as well as WASD20's Rules School may also be worth a look.
Ok thank you
Which part are you struggling with?
Kinda just all of it I have some basic understanding but I don’t know enough to know what’s all basic
Unfortunately DnD requires some reading of the basic rules, even if you use videos and other tools to help summarize major points. It can look like a lot at a first glance, but as a player all you really need to understand is how to make your character and what they do, how to make ability checks, and how your turn in combat works
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OiKZgfz7hi_Gvw9hftY0LD&si=Wh7EaZjb_gyzJn4T good playlist of some of the rules explained, some people recommend the handbooker helper videos
They are linked in the pins of this channel
Thank you I’ll keep that in mind I read appreciate it been wanting to get into dnd
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are some nice simplified sheets here too
The turn sheet is good to have
Thank you also I’ll look at them like I said I’ve really been wanting to get into dnd so I really appreciate the help
Does the app D&D Beyond help at all???
I think there's a setting when making a character in D&D Beyond that assists you through the process. That could be useful!
Yea I was looking into it and it does so I thought it would be good
But it can also present an issue with getting a result but not understanding how you got there.
We shall see ig lol
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=3jcKYtLQQHeMydby this is the official dndbeyond playlist for making 4 of the classes on the app so helps explain them a bit better
Does anyone got free party?
Head to #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community!
I think I’m done making my character
Congrats! If you want feedback, you can link it in #character-discussion.
Thank you!!!

ok, sorry i just came here first coz i thought it was the 1st place to check my bad
No need to appologize. Pointing you in the right direction is a lot of what we do in this channel
tysm btw , my friends already know how to play but wont teach me
Oh that seems quite rude of them
ty , i apreciate that
yeah, theyve been getting colder with me lately
Well, that kinda goes against the point of D&D, which is a group collaborative game.
idk man, i guess i did something wrong
i sincerely dont know what happened and i tried talking with them already
lets stay on dnd

My bad🙏
Hello! Is there any place here where you can find PBP games?
I'm sorry but I found some people 😭, however if one of them decides not to play before we start I'll inform you
Alright thanks for taking me into consideration at least have a wonderful day
#paid-looking-for-game paid
#looking-for-players free/paid
#looking-for-dm free/paid
I think that’s what you mean by PBP
None of them seem to be PBP, as far as I can tell from a glance
What does PBP mean? Just to double check I was thinking pay by play but I may be wrong
Play by Post
Do a search in the server for PBP there are a few communities that appear
I wana play DND, but I have a lot of schedualing shenanigans, so I wana see if PBP works better for me
Can you direct me to them?
#looking-for-community maybe? I’m not sure to much about play by post
You too, it'll probably be a while before we start so there's a least a slight bit of hope
Type pbp in the search bar and you’ll see them
Fr there still is
Oki thanks
Hello, I'm new to the server and I was wondering if there are games announcements in other languages that are posted on the server. In the server rules it says that all messages must be written in English but maybe there are announcements in English for games in French for example?
yes, the posts are necessarily in English, but all the games as well? Would you have any alternatives that you know then?
The games are run by community members, and not managed by the server in any way. Things such as the time, date, style of game, rules of play, language spoken, and pretty much everything else you can think of will be entirely dependent on the person running the game and the people they are playing with. If someone wants to run a game in another language, that is entirely up to them, and their post advertising their game will likely say so
Since this is an english server, the games advertised here will obviously heavily biased towards playing in english, but its not impossible or against the rules to find/run a game in another language.
Okay, that's what I thought, thank you for your time.
does anyone have any recommendation for die sets?
It depends on your budget.
Perhaps ask in #merch-and-dice? You can good dice of various materials for $100.
thank youu
So for weapons, do you roll to gain weapons or does each race/class/background have specific weapons you can use? Are you able to make your own?
Your class and background gives you starting equipment unless you go with the starting gold option then you buy your own equipment.
hello
When I was looking up my class, on the website I noticed you had to roll to get certain weapons. Is that applicable throughout all campaigns or you just look up your class and it's starting equipment and go from there?
I've never heard of rolling for your starting weapons, in every campaign I've played in we've just used the starting equipment
You also get some starting equipment from your background
Oh okay, thank you!
i know nothing about dnd and i don’t know how to get started
Check this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play to get started
They'll contain a link to the free basic rules, an introductory demo, as well as the Handbooker Helper video supplement
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#StartingEquipment
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this section. See the Starting Wealth by Class table to determine how much gold you have to spend.
for the looking for players thing, where would i put my discord link?
would it be in the replies of the thing i post?
You can add it in the additional info section or in the thread that gets attached to the post.
bet thank you
sorry its my first time doing it like this
No worries! Hope you find a great party and have fun playing D&D!
Hi, im somewhat new, ive played one complete campaign and then some that i didn’t finish so i get the concept of dnd and understand it well but have a bunch of ideas for being a dm, where would I start if I wanted to try that?

I’m a straight up rookie. I’ve wanted to dive into D&D, but idek where to start? The past few hours I’ve spent some time looking at an overview of it. How should I go about getting myself into it? It seems daunting in all honesty. I’m a closeted fantasy nerd, so most people around me would never in a million years be into this. Also newer to discord. Not sure if a message like this is far fetched, sorry in advance lol

Showed up in perfect timing then
You’d also be surprised how many people play dnd. Plus the game has gotten more mainstream attention, so there is a diverse group of people who play.
Yep. Welcome as well
Take your time going over things and feel free to ask for help.
Do people typically use a physical character sheet or digital when playing?
other than the starting kit, is there anything else needed or good information to check out before looking for a group?
That's depends on the DM. Playing in person could be either physical or digital character sheet. Online will 99.9% be digital character sheet.
In my experience with in-person games, you are free to use either physical or digital character sheets. Whatever is your preference, really.
Would you recommend I play in online groups while searching for in person? Probably a dumb question but idk the etiquette here
You can run or play in a group online anytime you like. Try not to overcommit, but there's no reason you can't play online and in-person.
That should be fine. Just let anyone that joins your online group that you aren't sure how long you'll be able to DM the group for. If you just run one-shots there shouldnt be anything wrong with that
You should always find a group first and ask the DM. What is allowed differs from table to table.
I would suggest starting out with the starter set it is legitemently a very good starter but I would definitly try to find someone whos played already to dm for you
PHB or starter kits are where most people start.

I’m free everyday I be chillin I’m self employed
& yea! You wanna make our characters now?
Check out the links above.
Also is it going to take place in the entrance examine?
This channel isnt for setting up games.
You can take up private conversations in DMs
Refer to the links above to learn how to get started
We can do that
I don’t see them
Has anyone seen a dragonborn paladin?
All the time
Yes
Curious and thats the only character i have on dnd beyond
okay, so i have a really wierd question.
Is there a way to (without changing class) change one of my saving throws? namely, from int to con
No, there isn't
you can gain more saving throws but not change them

also dnd beyond just has the rules for free even the classes for free super good
Oh ok thanks and question are kids allowed in this sever if not I shall leave I will just give up my dreams of having a character that has a auto crossbow
As long as you meet Discord's Terms of Service and comply with server rules, all are welcome here.
Ok
Back to reading
It's just explaining the online not the battle or how to make a character sheet
go to dnd beyond trust it has all the shit
Does the amount of wealth determined by the Starting Wealth by Class only apply if you don't use the starting equipment that is assigned by class?
if u have more questions @ me
yes because the background also gives u gold
If the player elects to take the starting equipment, then the only gold they start with is that which their background provides.
Oh wait I think I already have a character oh no I already have a character what will I do what if he is not good what if he isn't cool and what if he can't wailed a auto crossbow
Thank0you
If you have a way to share your character sheet, folks in #character-discussion can review it and provide suggestions.
But also this is why it's a good idea to review the game rules so you don't make characters that won't work well for the game.
Ok I can try to figure that out
what kind of stats are u looking to use for a auto-crossbow
No like you know that one van Helsen movie were he has a mag for the arrows to go to the crossbow holder thingy
so u just want regular crossbow
I'd start with what the core rules/game mechanics provide and then after playing with that for a bit, work with your DM about customizing things (e.g. homebrew)
Ok
uh helloo

If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
Where else could I look into finding a DM apart from discord. Is there some website that has a similar recruiting system?
I've heard Roll20, the DnD Beyond forums, and Reddit all recommended as places to look for groups
I made a guide with a bunch of options for where to find games. You can also search for Discord servers using keywords; d&d, dnd, lfg, ttrpg, and tabletop will get you results.
Now this is commitment, thank you
/Does anyone have a campaign I can join? I've played before but I'm very inexperienced.

I’m probably not optimizing it right

If it’s not working for you reach out to #moderator-support channel. I know the channel just got brought back online, but there may be lingering bugs that need to get resolved.
aight thanks
Where would i go to talk about figuring out important flavor text for a homebrew beast companion i want to make and have already gotten the ok by my dm?
Do any other newcomers struggle with beating theirselves up over errors and mistakes?
I’ve been at trying to find a campaign for so long just seems impossible to find one and I don’t mean in person i mean online honestly have no idea why dnd is so hard to get going
Doing my first campaign next term at school
I don’t do in person I’m a smaller girl with disabilities on top of being mute no way im meeting random strangers for that long
My problem dms aren’t reading my full post then getting mad at me for their mistakes getting sick of it honestly
Why won’t people read full posts? I don’t get it
My guy is a pirate rogue called captain blazeheart who is in a pact with Davy Jones he died when his original ship was exploded by a back stabber he's a skeleton so he experiences a lot of racism, his adoptive son made a pirate guild called the reapers bones if it wasn't clear already it's captain flameheart from sea of thieves
Oo davy jones in backstory epic
Thinking of trying sot
I've been playing it for years
But yeah cool character
Hello
Yeah finding a campaign can be extremely tough. You have to think about what it really entails. You're trying to find a group of 4-5 people who are all interested in playing the same style of game and get along with each other, who all have a 4 hours of free time in their schedule that aligns with everyone else in their group, and can commit to keeping that time slot available for sometimes up to a year or more.
But a lot of it is going to come down to how proactive you are with trying to find a game. Making a post and waiting for someone to reach out to you is going to be a lot slower and get a lot less results than reaching out to DMs and groups that are recruiting, and introducing yourself and asking if you can join. Try broadening the scope of your search. Use other websites and such
welcome!
Hi there. I am a newbie looking for my first game. I’ve been listening to a dnd podcast ‘dungeons and daddies’ for more than a year now, so I know what all goes on but have never actually played

DM’s are also volunteers, playing a game, in their free time. It’s quite difficult to say “why dont they read” when they are doing alot to run a game
Well, listening to podcasts and watching actual play youtube series are a great way to get into the game, but its still good to brush up on the actual rules. The bot post above has some great resources for getting started. If you feel ready to join a game, the #find-a-game has advice and instructions for how to join a campaign

Hey guys ! Hope yall are doing well ! I need some help about being a DM
what about
Basicly I'm gonna do my first ever campaign as a DM and I would like some tips and tricks

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The two bot posts above should provide helpful information for you
Thanks !

I want a structured campaign and party if that makes sense
Can you elaborate?
I tried some other websites discord servers made just for finding campaigns none of them worked the few that have replied or reached out fails to read any of my posts
I'm sorry you've had a rough expirience so far, but don't give up. You'll be able to find a group eventually, and it will be worth the wait
My friend shes been looking for a campaign for over a year now she said (shes also mute met started texting one another so on) and she dropped that on me today
Shes been in campaigns already though she said its getting so much harder for some reason to find them
If challenge is finding a game that accomdates non-verbal players it may help to use Text-to-Speech.
This discord article going over TTS:https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/212517297-Text-to-Speech-101
You can also setup some macros of common phrases in virtual tabletops such as roll20: https://wiki.roll20.net/Macros
Very much so, i have found that i am overly trying and not calming down and looking at the whole battle instead of just my part in it
My problem is that I have a fear of messing up, not just in this game but in basically everything I do
Its a game. Never forget that
Oh yeah I know but I don’t want to be bad at it lol
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/), watch Matt Colville's first handful of "Running the Game" videos, and search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice as this topic comes up often.
I have my own suggestions here: #dnd-newcomers message
I’m feeling better about playing now though
Then prepare. The key to success is what you’re doing to be ready ahead of time
Slowly getting more confident
Yeah, i mainly struggle with not stepping back and assessing what would be best and then also roleplaying charisma and intimidation which i have typically spec'ed in
Talk with your group to see if you can setup times where you know it's safe to fail.
I kind of wish I could start from level 1 knowing what I know now
When you have the time, I recommend checking out this short by PirateSoftware about it being okay to fail: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/o61o70heHW4?feature=share
Remember, failing is how we learn. How we get better.
And I always joke about how I don't fail, I succeed at finding out what doesn't work.
Hey, I'm building a character, i pretty much have everything set in stone, including a backstory, with the exception of alignment, as i still struggle to fully grasp, was told to ask in here about what it would be, wasnt sure if someone would have time to assist
Allignment is something that varies a lot from table to table
Different DMs use it in different ways, giving it different definitions, and many DMs don't use it at all
You should concentrate more on your character's PBIF (personality, bonds, ideals, and flaws) rather than alignment.
PBIF is the description in detail of your character.
Alignment is the summary of your character (it's not static). 5E has few gameplay mechanics that is affected/affects alignment.
The best advice about alignment is to ignore it as an archaic and flawed idea
That is not helpful advice
They're asking about alignment, so let's answer their questions about alignment
Debating it's merits or lack thereof is a topic for #dnd-discussion
I mean, first character i made had a subclass which gave a different spell based on alignment, i had an ok way going through that one, as i knew how i wanted them to play out, but on my current character, i just..i have no clue lol
Broadly speaking alignment combines two different "philosophies", your moral alignment (good, neutral, evil) and your approach to order and chaos (lawful, neutral, chaotic)
What those specific elements mean varies from table to table, but I can tell you how I use them at my table, in broad strokes
There are two axis for alignment: law-chaos (ethics) and good-evil (morals).
Your character can be on the gradient of the nine prime alignments (Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Good, (True) Neutral, Neutral Evil, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil).
Good/Neutral/Evil is your goal; what you're trying to accomplish. Good is to make the world better, potentially at your own detriment, while evil is making your life better, potentially at the detriment of the world
Neutral balances these
5E has de-emphasized the use of alignment in favour of PBIF. Again, there are still some magic/magic items that affect/affected by alignment (usually those are remnants from older editions).
5E doesn't have penalties for changing your alignment unlike older editions.
as for the character im making: Just someone who was outcast from their region for being different, so they were on their own most of the time, they pursue their own passions and have little regard for others, however will take on jobs/and do favors if they think it's fun or interesting. So i wasn't sure if that would fall under Chaotic or Neutral. But like, they also follow rules set, so idk if that makes them lawful
Lawful/Neutral/Chaos is your means; how you're going to get to your goal in relation to the laws and codes around you. Order strives to follow the rules to reach a goal, chaos strives to break them as the shortest path
Again, that's just how I use it at my table, other DMs use it differently
When it comes to alignment, you're best off asking your DM how they use it in their game
If you don't have a DM, don't worry about it
If you have a feature that relies on it, fill out whatever sounds best to you. Neutral good is a solid choice for an adventurer
So, this is character number 2 in a 4-month campaign atm, DM is a very RAW kind of dude, but it's been fun for us so no complaints, there's been magic items that rely on Alignment, and my last character had an aligment-related ability (Spirit Guardians & Divine Soul). So i want to make sure this character still has everything filled in
Then you're best off speaking to your DM to find out how they interpret alignment
alright well ill try to figure somethin' out, was hopin' to get someone's opinion on just "here's what u should go" but ill keep tryin' to figure this out
That's the thing; any such opinion is useless if the person giving it doesn't share the same definition of alignment as your DM
(Also depends on your perspective of your character, you define what your characters alignment is)
It's why I prefaced my explanation of alignment as being how I use it, because many do not use it remotely like that
alright well ty
Sorry, really quick, what does ssdc mean, and what is its purpose?
Anyone got any reccomendations when trying to learn and pick up d&d (i played baldurs gate 3 and really loved it) i really want to learn and understand how to play and enjoy it (i have played before like twice still dont fully get it)

i also dont really want to sound like a dummy for not knowing everything abt dnd
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Don't apologize. I was once a newbie myself.
Thank you so much i really do appreciate it<3
You don't type there. Have you read the instructions in #find-a-game?
Uh
not 100%, I skimmed
I know I'm supposed to use said command, but I don't know if it auto-directs the post there, or if it would post in the find a game channel
It'll post to whichever channel you chose using the command. Nothing gets posted in #find-a-game.
Ohh so I can choose the channel, kind of like reaction role setups?
When you begin typing the command, a list of options will pop up. Select the appropriate one, fill out the form, and you should be good to go.
Yo!
Hi
Im kinda confused, I cant see the looking for dm tab
Might need to re add it to your channel list because of the issues recently.
another thing, is there someplace I could dump my character sheet?
it's just for my new character
#character-discussion is the place for that I believe!
Well, if you want to discuss it.
Got a question, what does it mean by like a number, the letter d, than another number for damage? Like... 1d3 "something" damage?
oh ok, ty! I thought there'd be someplace called "character-creation" or like showcases
D means Die or Dice
1d means 1 die, and the 3 means it's a 3 sided
so a 3d10 means 3 dice that are 10 sided
Ah... Ok then... I have never played before, so everything is new to me...
I know how you feel lol, I've only been at it since January.
Always wanted to play though
It can be overwhelming, but the best way to learn is to play.

For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.

** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This is a great way to learn as AL Games follow rules as written guidelines,
- Games are broken down into self contained adventures that are completed in a single session.
- This can be played in person and online.
- #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690are channels in the server where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Kool
playing on phone is pretty easy too
I play in private servers on calls
So I was wondering why on the d10, it just has a 0 for 10
Because there is no zero on any dice so it's one less number they have to print on the dice
Not really, as there are plenty of dice with 2 digits
The reason is, a d10 is one of a special pair of dice, called “percentile dice”
One of the pair says 00, 10, 20, 30 etc on each side, to 90.
And the other has 0-9
You roll both dice to get a random number between 0-99 inclusive.
Never played before, just got the PHB, no dice, but I saw some metal ones but decided I was going to read the whole book before I got dice.
Has anyone performed the dungeon master roll while only having read the PHB and not the DM guide? If so, how did it go?
To get started you can start with just the free basic rules and a pre-written adventure.
There are solid amount of legally free adventures out there.
If you need to find one, dndbeyond offers a few.
As for lack of dice, there are plenty of places to get access to digital dice.
I was googling the other day and found that google itself has a built in die applet baked right into the search
D20 and all
You can also buy a budget friendly pack of plastic physical dice if needed.
tbh I thought it was going to take me longer to read the PHB, but I got most of it done in one sitting and now I want that metal die set 😛
totally not getting ahead of myself though
Hey peeps ^^
Take your time.
You don't need to rush and you don't need to have everything memorized.
One thing that can help is getting a dungeon master screen.
This can either be bought or handmade.
Well I haven't heard of a DM screen before, so already learning
googling it reveals an iconic core memory formed when I watched Stranger things for the first time, though.
yeah, that looks like something I want to make..
A DM screen is foldable tool that has a collection of reference material that you can use at a glance that can help you run a game.
It can contain useful information such as, the different conditions a character may get, a break down of combat, and other useful info.
is there an intention to hide some info that you need to remember from the other players at the table, or am I reading into that too much?
like holding your cards up in some card games
Check out this video by Matt Mercer, covering how he sets up his DM screen here: https://youtu.be/YRMVTmbe-Is
idk how to play could someone teach me
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel.
Most of us don't have time/energy to teach folks D&D one on one so if you can do some reading and prep on your own... then we can help answer any specific questions you have.

it seems that the board is more of a fluid tool than the "info I need to know or store as a DM to keep things going, but I can't show the other players yet" mental imagine I got
looks dope either way

hello.
The dm screen also helps to hide what the dm has prepared, like the full map of the dungeon, for example.
I have not played DnD before. I'd like to join a group that would not mind teaching me, as I tend to learn best by doing. Where can I start?
I've played one campaign that lasted a week before, I'd like to play more though!

Yeah that has been my plan and none of em want me because they don’t read the post to see that in notes i said im mute still never read that far down
If the problem is that people aren't realising from your application that you are mute, perhaps that information needs to be more prominently displayed in the application, or communicated directly via DMs
Communication and forming a table are two way streets
Hi, I was wondering if there are any dnd campaigns that I can join as a newbie. I prefer if it's held online.
Same with me
hello
Check #find-a-game
In my experience, most tables out there that are seeking players, will be open to the idea of teaching newbies. Just be transparent with them that you're looking to learn and you'll usually be all goods to apply wherever you want
thank you. I'm not sure why I missed that lol
Noted, thank you
Yooo can anybody tell how do I play ? I never played dnd before and it peek my interest
Nvm I can just read the server guide

How do I add points to my character?
Yeah I did but I’m still a little confused on how do I add the points to my charater
Are you building a character on dndbeyond with the basic rules?
Are you using the Pont Buy system?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
Not sure exactly what you mean by points. Are you referring to the point buy ability score system?
Yeah that
Are you using DnDBeyond’s character creator?
With the Point Buy system all of your stats start at 8. To increase each ability you deduct from 27 points.

hello
hi
Helloo
hi
Hello everyone 👋🏻 I’m Nee and I want to play D&D with my friends. Were having trouble figuring it out through videos and such and I was wondering if someone could help me with character creation and also playing the game? I’d like to actually play a little with a group, like a demo if possible?
Well, if you want to request a sort of one-shot demo, #looking-for-dm is probably your best shot
Just make it clear what you are looking for
Thank you!
How do I make a request post? Do I need the app?
Never used it, instructions should be in #find-a-game
You could sign up for a learn-to-play session during one of the virtual weekends in this server's Events tab. You could also search StartPlaying (a website where DMs advertise) for one-shots; occasionally you can find ones for free and/or specifically for learning the game!
yo I'm very new in interested in playing a wizard. let's say your playing a conjurer wizard would it benefit you to take any conjuration first level spells?
It would fit your character roleplay wise to pick some and some of the common conjuration spells are pretty good
That being said, you don't need a single Conjuration spell to play a Conjuration wizard. A few of your features might benefit from them, but it's still optional
Mage hand, find familiar and fog cloud/grease are pretty good spells especially at 1st level
Just don't feel like you need to pick up every single Conjuration spell just because you're a Conjuration wizard
Yeah pick the spells you think are cool
gotcha I def want to grab mage hand and FF 👍
Find Familiar is a really fun spell to have and mage hand is a really solid cantrip
Hello 👋, is there a place for help on the DnD Beyond app?
My GM made a custom item with properties and I'd like it represented.
TIA

Hi am kyle i love dnd
Question. So apparently my players can find a book called magic of gnomemgarde" which has spells in it. Does that mean they can just learn those spells?
depends on the class , if it's a wizard for example he wouldn't use spells from someone else's spell book right away(correct me if i'm wrong)
but they still can learn them
they are going to need to study them ( after this it's up to the dm)
A wizard can copy the spells from another spellbook to their own, using the rules listed under the Learning Spells of 1st Level and Higher section of the wizard class
that was what i was referring to thx
So only wizards can learn the spells? No bards or arcane knights?
Wizards can learn new spells when they find wizard arcane scrolls and spellbooks. Bards and eldritch knights only learn new spells on level up.
No, those classes can't learn spells in that way.
Welp, guess my players should have made a magician.
"this " refers to being new?
