What is a Dungeon Master?
  • In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
How does it work?
Where do I start?
true musk
#

Pre-written adventures take care of a lot of the heavy lifting for you by providing story hooks you can present players, balancing out combat encounters, and giving you all the relevant information needed to run an adventure.

D&D Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:

Embrace the shared story.

D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.

It’s not a competition.

The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.

Be fair and flexible.

Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.

Modify the adventure to suit your tastes.

Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.

Don’t worry about mistakes.

Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

true musk
# supple vigil i have the dnd essential kit that has the dragon of the ice spire peak adventure...

Each adventure in Dragon of Icespire Peak is self contained, making them easier to prep for.
You present your players with a quest board with 3 starting quests, which allows a clear idea of how much to prep for.
As the players complete quests, more become available.
That adventure book even provides hidden missions as rewards for having the players explore the starting area and communicating with NPCs.

do you want to play on a map or are you gonna be primarily using theater of the mind?

theater of mind but i do have a map of neverwinter

there’s some awesome reusable maps out there on amazon etc that can be personalized with dry erase markers. highly recommend them.

shut hemlock
supple vigil

i have the map it came in the essential kit i bot

#

i have an idea for a campain its a lot like reign of fire the movie but the players have to escape the country because of tiamot

shut hemlock
#

homebrew campaigns can be fun but i wouldn’t recommend them for your first time. it’s hard to learn the rules and write an original story + world at the same time.

supple vigil
#

yeah not the best idea for first time but it would be fun to play

true musk
#

Another way to look at it is similar to trying to build a car at the same time you're learning how a car works.
It is possible, but makes things unnecessarily more challenging.

supple vigil
#

makes sense

#

how do you do dnd online

shut hemlock
#

my first few sessions i dmed were homebrew stories i wrote. i’m a bit of a niche case, and that was after a year of playing as a player, so i already memorized most of the rules by then. i think writing your own stuff can be fun because you don’t have to stress about forgetting or missing something in a prewritten campaign that ends up being important later.

is it like dnd beyond where you can join a campain but not host it with out paying

shut hemlock
#

though you can pretty easily edit and manually put into whatever you want. if you want the ease of selecting abilities straight from the book with no hassle implementation you need to buy the digital versions of the books that contain the spells/subclasses/abilities you wanna use unfortunately

supple vigil

true musk
# supple vigil how do you do dnd online

You can play online by simply being in a group call and playing theater of the mind.
Or you can play through a virtual tabletop such as the one on dndbeyond, roll20, Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo, Alchemy RPG, Talespire and so on.
Each with their own pros and cons, along with varying price ranges.

shut hemlock
#

all of the races in DnD have their own unique benefits and shortcomings that for the most part balance them all out to be pretty equal to one another with some exceptions

#

dragonborn are a very popular and fun race to play, i believe they’re in the top 5 races to play according to the latest polls

supple vigil
#

good because i love dragon

shut hemlock
#

dragonborn have innately better strength and charisma and thus excel as paladins, fighters, warlocks, and bards. they also have a unique attack to them called a breath weapon where they do a cone of elemental damage that’s determined by the color of their scales.

supple vigil
#

but maybe tabiak or the cat people are good because of puss and boots

Well I don’t know any campaign that’s going on..

supple vigil

worn sequoia
#

Or that’s opening up

shut hemlock
# supple vigil in was just curious

if you want to homebrew a mechanic for your own games that allows dragonborn to diversify their options with breath attack like using it as a weapon coating that’s fine, just keep in mind that it’s very easy to break the game with overpowered homebrew. there’s a reason that most spells/abilities/attacks are super restrictive and only do what they say they do, otherwise the game would become unbalanced and even worse boring.

true musk
#

There are multiple avenues to find games.

For in person games you can:

  • Visit tabletop game shops
  • Visit local conventions
  • Visit your local libraries
  • Visit your school
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person.

Online options in this server:

  • You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
  • Reach out to people in #looking-for-players
  • These posts are by DMs looking for players.
  • Extra tip: Elaborate what you bring to the table, details that help a DM determine their compatibility with a player can make a difference.
  • Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
  • Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in #adventurers-league
  • Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.

Other options

You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.

shut hemlock
#

if you make one attack/spell/ability too powerful it steals the spotlight away from other abilities and they never get used. then the game becomes essentially a turn based button masher because you make the same choice every time it’s your turn.

supple vigil
#

i was just curious because i have not really looked into the breath machnics and theres a lot of reading involved is yeah

Mainly because you need to have an understanding of the mechanics before hand, so you know who changes will impact the mechanics of the system.

What is the Adventurers League?

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Participants follow a special set of rules that allows players to effectively take their character from game to game while still keep their progress and rewards.

#

It’s designed for things like convention centers and game stores, where you might not have the same group every time.

true musk
#

The way it works, a DM will run a pre-made adventure that is designed for characters of a certain level range. Each single session adventure is self contained. So you can play at your own pace.

Players create characters that follow certain guidelines. The flexibility and new player friendly design comes from being able rebuild the character in between adventures. Which allow you to experiment and build your understanding of how certain classes work.

Because it takes a long time to get there. Even if you follow the very rough guidelines for leveling up where you tend to level up every 2-3 sessions, and have a session every week, that's approaching a 2 year campaign. Most modules also don't go that high, or have much content for level 20.

When running a campaign, can you switch characters? Like, run a ranger for a couple of sessions, and then run a wizard?

It very much depends on the campaign, but generally that's not common

A lot of games focus on developing characters and the relationships between them

viral pelican
# opal terrace Hello! Total newb! When running a campaign, can you switch characters? Like, run...

You'll want to talk to your DM about it. I was fairly open to modifications and back-sies in the first few levels of my campaign with newbies. In fact, one character did change class from Cleric to Druid, but that was alongside the narrative, and their relationships were not affected.

If you are worried about trying out characters in combat, you can always try one-player DnD: just set up a fight scenario and play both the enemies and the player. It might sound corny, but when you are new to the game it can be a good way to understand how what's on the page transitions to the table.

For every new level in wizard you roll a 1d6 (the "4" is the average of 1d6) plus your Con modifier.

smoky adder
#

No

#

The first level uses the max value for your hit die.

#

Which in the case about would be a 6.

cobalt frigate
#

At level 1, you have maxium hit points. For a level 1 wizard that's 6 + your Con modifier.

smoky adder
#

The line you've quoted applies to levels 2 and up.

#

It gets added to your current total.

#

If your CON is +2, you'd have 6 + 2 = 8 at first level.

cobalt frigate
#

You can have a minimum of 1 hp on a level increase.

smoky adder
#

If you take the average at level 2, you'd gain another 4 + 2 = 6.

#

So 8 + 6 = 14 total.

cobalt frigate
#

It's highly recommended NOT to have a low Con score that would give you a negative modifier.

smoky adder

The increase also has a minimum of 1, so your max HP will never decrease from leveling up.

smoky adder
timid locust
#

Normally, the classic line in DnD is "Flavor is Free", but there's a mechanical reason why your DM might not agree with that.

As mentioned above, you would normally need to hold an arcane focus in one of your hands, and if you flavor it as a bracelet, then your DM might think you're trying to sneak around that rule

cobalt frigate
#

RAW focus have to be held. There are exceptions with the cleric's and paladin's holy symbol divine focus being worn (or on a shield).

#

Rules As Written, focus have to be held in a free hand when casting a spell that requires Material component.

fallen surge
#

RAW means "rules as written"

cobalt frigate
#

There are exceptions to that rule but that's not what this channel is here to teach.

timid locust
#

You'd have to bring that up with your DM. They might be ok with it, but they might not

cobalt frigate
#

That may be Object Interaction action.

fallen surge
#

within the normal rules of the game, a bracelet cannot be used as a spellcasting focus. If you are asking about how it would work, the answer is it wouldn't. If you want to "reflavor" a spellcasting focus from one thing into another, most DMs allow you to do that, but changing how the rules work for something is not reflavoring. The rules state that a spellcasting focus must be held in your hand

#

Unless you are a cleric or paladin

cobalt frigate
#

No because it is not in a free hand.

fallen surge
#

No, because that would mean you could hold something else in that hand, which would not be allowed

cobalt frigate
#

Remember that DM has final say on homebrews.

forest nest
#

is there anything that states you cant wear a focus anyway though? would it still be able to be a bracelet, but to use it you would need to either remove it or hold your wrist?

cobalt frigate
#

For now stick with what's in the rules.

forest nest
#

ya, or that

cobalt frigate
#

How you store it is flavour. You just need to hold it in a free hand to cast a spell.

forest nest
#

you would still want to clear it with DM, but that would be fine

fallen surge
forest nest
#

im not sure if you are trying to say you can or cant lol. im reading that too and holding a piece of jewelry that im wearing is certainly posssible

#

i like the storage idea better though, nice and clear

fallen surge
#

You only have 1 object interaction per turn. Drawing out a weapon or spellcasting focus, and putting away a weapon or spellcasting focus both require the use of an object interaction. So, you cannot pull the focus out, and then put it away, on the same turn

# forest nest is there anything that states you cant wear a focus anyway though? would it stil...

Furthermore, with some DnD rules things get enforced with a sort of negative-space ruling: Some feat, item, or class ability has the effect, and therefore if you don't have that feat/item/ability you don't have that effect. For example, Holy Symbols, which are spellcasting foci for Clerics and paladins, can be borne on a shield. They still need a free hand to use it, but so long as they have the shield donned, that criteria is satisfied. From this it follows that because arcane foci don't say they can be borne on a shield, then they don't have that option.

Yeah, sounds reasonable.

Again, it's simply a conversation you should have with your DM.

For now learn the Rules As Written because there is no guarentee that a DM you find will let you do what you want to do.

Honestly though, what you are describing sounds more like a component pouch than a spellcasting focus. Its something that you store in a (bag) on your person and then pull out in the moment when you cast a spell. Substitute "bag" for "bracelet" and you've got exactly what you are looking for

As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

copper frigate
#

Download Intro to Stormwreck Isle, the free introduction adventures on D&D Beyond and watch the accompanying videos on how to run the encounters.

trail knoll
#

I'll add on here: don't worry about homebrew or house rule stuff. Just focus on RAW (rules as written). When you're comfortable with those, then feel free to use house rules. Make sure to talk to your players first tho, as it's not the greatest thing to introduce a new rule partway through a campaign

agile path

Btw how I'm doing my campaign is that I have main plot points but my party members are so chaotic that there is no way I can plan things out meticulously or else i will get stressed so im gonna improv the inbetweens

that depends on your class

#

no you learn an amount of spells at certain points and have to adhere to the spell level you know for learning those

#

if you go from level 1 to 2 you learn 2 spells and they have to be level 1 spells

solemn light
#

A wizard starts with six level 1 spells, and gains 2 spells of any level they have slots for on level up.

Wizards can learn new spells as they adventure.

They can Prepare spells equal to your Int Mod + Wizard level, but they must be at a level you can cast (you have slots for).

#

A 5th level wizard for example can cast up to 3rd level spells. They might know 8x 1st level, 4x 2nd, and 2x 3rd level spells, and can prepare any 10 ( if they have 5 level + 5 int mod) of those.

#

#

Lvl 1 you have no choice but pick 6 lvl 1 spells

#

Yup

#

It’s up to dm but you get to lurn 2 new spells i belive

#

It’s like this you have a cook book

You can memorise 6 cake resipes

You can cook 2 of those cakes

#

Wizards have a spell book / cook book for this perpose

solemn light
#

At level 1, with +3 int you can:
have six level 1 spells in your spell book. (You start with 6 spells in your book)
You can prepare 4 of those spells on a long rest. (You prepare Wizard level + int mod)
You can cast two of them before running out of spell slots. (You have two 1st level slots)

crude musk
#

@bright lava As a wizard, you have three things you have to track

  • your spellbook; this is all the spells you know. You can add any number of spells to it even without levelling up (you just have to find them, such as scrolls or other spellbooks), but you get 2 new spells for 'free' each level. You can only ever add spells that are equal to or lower than your highest spellslot

  • your prepared spells; these are the spells you have on hand each day. you can prepare a number of spells from your spellbook equal to yout intelligence modifier plus your wizard level. You can change your prepared spells each long rest and these are the spells you can cast

  • your spell slots; these are the 'batteries' for your spells and also determine the highest level you can learn. A spell of level 1 or higher always requires a spell slot of the same level as the spell or higher. some spells get stronger if you use higher level spell slots

tribal escarp
#

9 if you include your cantrips

solemn light
#

It increases how many spells you can prepare on a long rest.

crude musk
#

That's your intelligence modifier, which influences how many spells you can prepare

solemn light
#

You can yep. You can cast any twice before running out of slots, including casting the same spell twice,

tribal escarp
#

You can use any spell as many times as you like as long as you have slots for it

#

Yup though your party might not like that

solemn light
#

Also not actually a possible situation.
Cantrips are your unlimited 'you can cast these as many times as you like, they don't eat a slot' option.

tribal escarp
#

As a newbie you are not allowed to use fireball until you fill out this ~ fire safty ~ essay on why and how to properly use fire ball

topaz garnet
#

Yeah, you can cast Fire Bolt as many times as you want, it's free, you could cast it 400 times and nothing is wrong

#

Fireball is a 3rd level spell, so you need to pay a spell slot of 3rd level or higher each time

tribal escarp
#

Becuse ones a tiny tiny flame thd otheres a expotion

topaz garnet
#

because it's a big explosion of big damage

tribal escarp
#

There are other spells that are more dynamic then fireball such as agangagas scorcher or dragons breath or pysic Lance that are argubelly better

#

If you hit a dragon with a psyic Lance your party is going to do far more damage then if you did a fire ball to said flying dragon

#

Pay attention to the timer ^

crude musk
#

Let's keep things on topic please; if people wanna chat optimal strategies or damage output, that's what #optimization is for

#

At level 3, assuming you have a +3 intelligence modifier, you can prepare a total of 6 spells from your spell book; Level (3) + Intelligence Modifier (3) = 6 Prepared spells

tribal escarp
#

You can upcast a spell but you can’t down cast a spell

#

For example you can cast ice knife at lvl 2 even though it’s lvl 1 spell but can’t cast rimes binding ice at lvl 1

#

It would be better to do 4 and two as limiting your self to 1 lvl 2 spell is well limiting

#

Are you using dnd beyond or paper ?

#

On the home page when you edit your charector there should be a slider called show level scaled spells if you click that it will show you any and all spells that can up upcast

#

Also you could gain extra spells possibly with what race you pick some add spells or are able to do once’s a day spells

solemn light
#

You can't 'save' known for later. Those First 6 spells must be 1st level.

#

You still can't save the 6th for later.
You start with 6 1st level spells.

#

when you level up, you get 2 new spells.

#

They can be of any level you can cast (have spell slots for)

tribal escarp
#

And can switch known spells out for the new ones

solemn light
#

Not for wizard, if I recall

#

Wizards can change what they prepare, but known spells do not change. You can't swap them out on level up like with other Known casters.

solemn light
#

There is a difference between Known spells and Prepared spells.
A wizard at level 1 Knows 6 x 1st level. They can Prepare (1+int mod) of those spells.

tribal escarp
#

When you reach lvl 4 things are going to get intresting for you unless the dm dosnt allow feats

solemn light
crude musk
#

At level 2, you pick Chronurgy and then pick Gift of Alacrity as one of your spells

tribal escarp
#

I am that’s why I used a cake annology

crude musk
#

You can either cast from a scroll instead of using a spell slot
Or you can copy the scroll to your spellbook if it's a spell you don't already know but could learn

#

No?

tribal escarp
#

Ok for clarification

At level 1 you start with a cook book that has 6 resipes

You can chose up to your int modifyer resipes you can bake that day

When you level up you can add two resipes to your cook book

Auternly if you find a resipe scroll or another wizards cook book you can copy the spells from there

Crafting of spell scrolls is a differnt cettle of fish

crude musk
#

Why would you tear a page out of your spellbook?

#

No, it just gives you two spells in your spellbook

#

Not scrolls

#

Scrolls are a magic item that your DM might reward you with

tribal escarp
crude musk
#

No there isn't

#

Cartomancer does something different, but that's beyond the scope of this channel

tribal escarp
#

It’s called mageborn

crude musk
#

It's not sensible to call it a scroll because it's not a scroll and scrolls have specific rules

crude musk
#

You can flavour it however you want

#

whatever works for you

tribal escarp
#

You just need to pick a language for your spells to be in

crude musk
#

There's no requirement for that in the rules

#

That kind of homebrew/flavouring is beyond this channels purpose

#

Remember that this is a newcomer channel for discussing the basics

tribal escarp
#

Auternitivly you could have it be that the spell book you have was written by your master as you level up your master unlocks two spells of your choice

#

As for copying spells there is a gp cost in ink I don’t think there’s any way around that dose the scribing quill or tatto get around the gp cost to copying spells

crude musk
#

It costs 50 gold pieces and 2 hours per level of the spell

#

So copying a 2nd level spell from a scroll or spellbook will cost 100gp and take 4 hours

You can copy a spell from gliph of warding right if it has a spell effect ?

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!

Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.

Its great fun, it can however be a bit challenging because they have two lists of learnable resources to manage after every long rest: their Infusions, and their Spellcasting. Half their subclasses also have additional statblocks to control in combat, which can be a lot

All that being said however, having adaptable Infusions and Spellcasting makes Artificers the best class imo for preparation, and rewarding good thinking ahead

#

And the flavor of a character that creates prototype magical equipment is just awesome

slow hawk
#

Most the subclasses have features use the full action economy so that is a other consideration. You have lots of stuff to do but you need to be aware of those options to reap the full benefits.
Not that it cant be done but it isnt a class i wouldnt recommend to a new playee

I meant more in a general sense.

crude musk
#

@woven isle I know it's well intentioned, but your advice is maybe not as constructive as you think and potentially a bit gatekeepery

  • There's nothing wrong with reading the rules beforehand and many groups, even those that welcoming newcomers, will expect at least an attempt to understand the game before starting rather than placing the burden of teaching entirely on the other players
  • There's no inherent benefit to learning the game between online and offline groups, each has their own advantages and disadvantages. Disuading against online groups will result in newcomers having their options narrow
valid portal
#

I absolutely recommend reading the basic rules instead of just learning at the table without having read them. They’re not mutually-exclusive things.

#

Both are good and healthy options.

#

But newcomers for sure should at least read the basic rules before jumping into a table.

Let's keep things within the scope of constructive advice for newcomers and not get too in the weeds with side topics

Bg3 takes place in one specific setting called "Forgotten Realms" and it has a list of gods that exist within the lore of that setting. In "normal" D&D, you might be playing in that same setting, or a different one. It could be another pre-established setting that the rule books have information on, like Eberron or Wildemount, or it could be one your DM made up. Even if you do play in one of those established settings, your DM might make alterations to the lore. What gods exist within the world of your game and what ones your cleric might be allowed to worship is very much something that the DM determines. The DM might even allow you to make up your own god. It is not something that you pick from a list the way you do in BG3.

#

If you are curious specifically about the published official lore for any given setting, the #dnd-lore is the best place to ask about that.

Dnd has a bunch of different "official settings",most dms will even make their own,so theirs no way of responding to lore specific questions, ask your DM,talk to them about it,and learn what their wolrd is like

This is because according to multiclass rules...

You determine what spells you know and can prepare for each class individually, as if you were a single-classed member of that class. If you are a ranger 4/wizard 3, for example, you know three 1st-level ranger spells based on your levels in the ranger class.

kind compass

But ranger is a half caster

#

IF you're wizard and multiclass with cleric, your spell slot progression dosent slow down

timid locust

Correct, but that's for spell slots. Plouf is asking about actual spells learned.

#

or is there somethin they GOTTA have

slow hawk
#

The class description for Monk describes its general flavor and mechanics

Your specific Monk’s story is foe you to create, with a DM’s help

jaunty herald
#

well yeah, but my question is do the stories need anything in particular or (if it were very barebones) they can just mess with ki and such

true musk
#

While not required, a good backstory tends to have these things:

  • Reason(s) to be an active participant in the campaign.
  • Reason(s) to want and need to be part of a team.
  • Connections to showcase they are are a part of the campaign’s setting.
  • A story that that is compatible with the theme and tone of the campaign
slow hawk
#

Each DM will have their own setting; whether they use an official setting directly, a modified version, or something totally custom is table dependent

When creating a backstory for a campaign it is best to consult with a DM

HOWEVER

You can and should make practice characters to get a feel for the process

Sticking to official mechanical options will be safe

A backstory can usually be adapted in some form, avoid specific items, locations or names

#

For exampe, if you wrote your monk is from the Rainbow Lotus Monastary in North River of South Bend in the shadow of Doohickey Mountains, you run into a problem if that place isnt in your DM’s world

#

I'm also somewhat new (in that I have been playing in a campaign but its been really on and off for 2 years)

Im kind of new I’ve played a few campaigns at my school but the campaign I was in died off by the end of the school year

Questionable idea, but what if us new people just start a group?

fleet field
#

You could absolutely try, but it falls apart a lot in my experience, especially if you aren't willing to put in the effort to learn it all on your own

normal stag
#

yeah.. I figured it would be difficult to manage

jaunty herald
#

all new people could be fine for players probably, but you'd probably want a bit more experienced DM for that

normal stag
#

yeah for sure

#

I was thinking of learning how to DM but I'd imagine it would also be hard to find people who'd be interested in playing a campaign with a fresh off the presses DM lol

jaunty herald
#

i'd say to try a few games as a player first, then try dming if you think you'd like it

main fulcrum
#

or just go for it. I know people who started by DMing, so it is doable if more work

What is D&D?
How does it work?
  • The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

Where do I start?
jaunty herald
#

dming is mostly describing a situation and telling a story, so playing through one wont exactly be the same

normal stag
#

yeah, I've played an on again, off again campaign for 2 years so I have limited experience but its still better than nothing

smoky adder
#

If that is something you want to try, I’d suggest starting with just a single session.

#

Something short and low commitment.

#

And if everyone knows you’re all learning together, it can be a lot of fun.

true musk
normal stag
#

Right yeah that sounds like a good idea. I've had a lot of fun in the group I played in since a lot of us were playing for the first time and it was a real learning experience

smoky adder
#

Yeah, one shots are great way to experiment with the game. You get to try different roles and playstyles and work with different people.

true musk
#

There are quite a few pre-written adventures that are quite new DM friendly.

normal stag
#

Are there any you might recommend?

smoky adder
#

And since it’s all over at the end, mistakes don’t cause any lasting issues.

smoky adder
#

Intro to Stormwreck Isle or Lightning Keep are probably the most newcomer-friendly ones there.

#

Giant of the Star Forge and Prisoner 13 are both for higher levels.

#

(And the rest of those aren’t even adventures.)

normal stag
#

ah, yeah I've heard stuff gets crazy at higher levels so I definitely don't think I'll be going there, but the lower level ones are definitely of interest

dull moat
#

Im great with imagination maybe i could try DMing idk

normal stag
#

I think I might try my hand at Intro to Stormwreck Isle, is there any recommendation on how best to prepare? I feel like the book will probably cover all that I need, but it probably never hurts to be overprepared

jaunty herald
#

and work on how you tell it

What’s a good way to get started never played before but wanna learn

normal stag

I guess the first thing I'd do is probably find a group

Hey... I'm just kinda new to this since I got to join the Dnd club at my school and I know I could learn it online or on some websites... But I want to ask some of the people who have more knowledge of this community about what should and should not do as a beginner and what limitations should not I surpass or something... Just asking

jaunty herald
#

1: dont minmax a build that does 300 damage by level 2
2: dont be mr farts the fart wizard

#

thats it 👍

gleaming gulch
#

What does the 2 mean?

spice cobalt
forest nest
#

theres really no simple way to get around the learning online part

jaunty herald
#

also murderhobos arent that fondly looked at

#

so uh, dont kill everything you see

forest nest
#

you want to have a basic understanding of how stuff works, adn a good idea of what you think you would enjoy playing

#

then asking more specific questions can be helpful

spice cobalt

general character building advice is:

  • don't spend your whole time making them an unstoppable maniac (this is a team game after all)
  • make sure your character matches the campaign (don't play Guykiller the Broken in a political game, for example)
  • remember that 95% of the time you are the 'good guy' - you can be morally grey but shouldnt be 'kills everything for laughs'
  • if you're new, don't even touch optimization. play what looks fun, save being powerful for when you have more experience
  • playing a spellcaster is a lot of fun, but is significantly more complex - don't start with them if you struggle with a lot of decisions
  • as always, be confident in knowing the rules
