Hi!
I'm new to D&D but picked the Dragon Army Role. I played it for the first time 2 days ago and really enjoyed the game and decided to join this server to get to play it some more and have fun!
Nice! This channel's pinned messages has some info to peruse for getting started!
Oh! Me too! My friend helped me make a character, but he is already in the middle of a campaign with more experienced players, meaning that there would be too much of a level barrier between us. So I came here to find a group)
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Experience level, or character level?
Experience level
I am quite new to D&D but I absorb knowledge quickly, so I believe that I will be able to play soon with a supporting group
question so i was playing dnd with some friends and our dm decided to turn my father into a human/dragon mutition because he was a cultist and hes not even fully transformed and he killed my party member he was like half dragon not even like 1/3rd dragon he hit my teamate for 113 damage we are a lvl 6 party is this normal
Which part?
You could theoretically face certain kinds of dragons at level 6, but it's pretty unlikely one would do that much damage in a single round. I suspect your DM did some adjustment and went overboard with it.
If the question is about the damage, they either used a much higher CR creature or they're using some type of homebrew monster statblock.
So this is my first post: Used to play DND and various RPGs years ago and looking to jump back into it but can't seem to find a local game...How does a VC game compare to a live game?
You have pros and cons in both directions. Side conversations take a different shape, there's no communal snacks, and tech issues can cause headaches. But digital tools can make accessing maps, rules, and such much more convenient, there's no commute, and you can play with people from all over the world.
Those are some things off the top of my head.
Pretty similar I think. The biggest differences I see are that you can't talk over one another in Vc and hear each other as well as you could at a d&d table.
Partly because of that fact and not being able to get non-verbal clues as easily over voice or video sometimes people hesitate in silence a long time before speaking. Makes the air drag a bit
Last newbie question: I see some DMs are using DND beyond and some Owlbear. I'm sure there are others...if I was looking to trying some virtual games which would be better/ more widely used? Or should I wait to actually jon a game?
What tools any group uses is up to the group.
You don’t need to commit to any specific tools since those will be specified by the table. But if you want to mess around with the most popular ones to see what they’re like, I’d suggest Owlbear Rodeo, Roll20, and Foundry (which costs money while the others are free) in addition to D&D Beyond.
If you've got a particular tool you favor, you could search for a group using that specific tool.
If not, you can simply discuss it with the group before you start.
Awesome thank you all for the info
Sup!
Hey everyone im a relatively new dnd player and i kinda need some advice on how to get started if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it!!
Welcome! There's some helpful links here to get you started:
Oh thank you!
...or not. 😅
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Guess it just doesn't like me.
But yeah, those links should help. Did you have any specific questions, though?
I just have no idea what im doing and im wondering how everyone else got started
All these youtube videos are kinda hard to understand so i was just wondering if anyone had a better way😅
Well, different people learn in different ways. Videos aren't for everybody.
What are the different ways?
Some people might learn better by reading than watching, for example.
(Not trying to sound rude)
Oh okay! Thank you!
Or you might learn best by just jumping in and learning as you play.
That might work thanks!
You might also try starting here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1026-common-terms-new-dungeons-dragons-players-should
That's what I did so far
If you've got a grasp of those common terms, everything else -- videos, books, or play -- should be easier to understand.
The tricky bit about that is finding a group willing to have someone who needs a lot of support versus someone who's done some of the work independently.
Not impossible, of course. Just a heads-up.
This also does an excellent job of covering the basics:

It's a short little choose-your-own-adventure thing specifically designed for newcomers.
Thanks guys!
Hello! Im gonna have my first D&D campaign as a DM, im gonna runa phandelver and below and i saw there was this product called "Phandelver pawns" i want to know which volume or set should i get for the most creatures in that adventure?
In the absence of details about the set, you'd have to provide more info for anyone to answer your question!
I'm sure there are plenty of people here that do play in person, but given that this is an online forum, I think you'll find that the people here are generally biased towards online play, myself included. So, its harder to answer questions about products that only apply to in person play, such as miniature sets. Though, perhaps #merch-and-dice might be able to help?
when do i learn how to make a gun as an artificer
That is not something artificers are capable of doing through class features alone
oh
unless you are referring to the Eldritch Cannon from the artillerist subclass
i thought they could make a firearm spell focus at a certian level?
You are thinking of the Artillerist level 6 feature, "Arcane Firearm"
The name is very deciving though. That feature takes a normal arcane spellcasting focus (wand, rod, or staff) and makes it stronger.
ah i see, that makes sense
They call it a "firearm" because it adds some "explosiveness" to your spells, by increasing the amount of damage you deal
its just a matter of flavor
my magic sniper is gonna be broken for a much longer time to be fixed
I don't understand what you mean
I think they might have had something homebrewed
Hey everyone brand new to d&d would love to get the ropes bought myself the essentials pack and just wanted to see if anyone could teach/invite me to play

@lyric fjord Read the links above.
Wait i need to pay to play?!
can i dm someone my first character and them tell me if its good?
We have #character-discussion for discussing characters. If it's a DnDBeyond character you can use the URL to the character sheet and paste it in channel and get an embedded link. For other character sheets, use a reputable file sharing service to link to the image/PDF that way.
The Basic Rules are free. If you want more options you can buy additional books. However, often times if you join a group you can borrow the books to create your character.
Where do i buy the book, from the website?
Depends if you want physical or digital books.
You can find the physical books at your local hobby store, book store, or Amazon.
There are many places you can buy books - for digital you have: DnDBeyond, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and Wizards's online store (can buy physical + digital bundles at Wizard's online D&D store).
And then regular book stores which sell physical D&D books. There's also Amazon which sells physical books.
If I buy the starter set digital and physical bundle, will the premade characters that come with it be available on D&DBeyond?
is there any way to increase your proficiency bonus other than leveling
Just leveling.
Buying physical books (outside of the physical + digital bundles the Wizards of the Coast D&D online store offers) does not provide access to DnDBeyond materials.
I would be buying the starter set digital+physical that the Wizard of the Coast online store offers. I just want to confirm that the dnd beyond digital portion is the has all the same materials
Ah cool - then yes buying the hybrid bundle would unlock that material on DnDBeyond
I don’t think you even need to buy it. There’s a selection of premade characters available by default, which I believe includes those specific ones already.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Have there ever been samurai in DnD?
I believe Fighter has a subclass called Samurai?
Yes. There's a samurai fighter sub-class.
Note that there is a subclass called samurai but its not necessary to use it to be a samurai for role playing purposes
Its just a job, afterall
You can just as easily play a calm and steadied fighter with a sword or archery focus
A battle master would honestly work well too if you wanted an alternative to the samurai class
Could make yourself out to be a disgraced shogun or a successor to one as a battle master

I have a noob question
How powerful is Vecna?
And is portrayal in stranger things accurate at all to his dnd lore?
I hope this doesn’t get me roasted lol
In a mechanical sense, very as he is CR 26. In a lore sense, more than very as he is a multiverse travelling god.
In a word, no.
I didn’t think so but I’m not sure it was intended to be
Because they did the mindflayer and it was nothing like dnd mindflayers
Is there a certain campaign for him or can he be used in any campaign by the dm
Stranger things is doing their own thing and using names from dnd, the only crossover is the hunt for the thessalhydra adventure
The DM could use him regardless of campaign, certainly.
There's the upcoming eve of ruin campaign, but any creature can be used in any adventure.
Man I want to play more dnd
Just hard for me to find groups that work with my schedule
Simply become a DM, and make everyone bend to your schedule
But
I want to play lol
I don’t want to be a dm yet
So not new to DnD, but sorta new to DnD online here.
I'm hoping to find a new playgroup

hello
I mostly know how to play, just need someone to dm me
i dont know how to play
To start, you should skim over the basic rules to see how to play. Not every rule has to be memorized, but pay attention to how skill checks and combat works
ok thank you!
I’m not sure how to get DynoBot to trigger but if you scroll up in this channel a bit there’s a post by Dyno that has an introductory demo so you can get a vibe for the game
okii
Is it generally easy to find a game/playgroup here?
apparently im a rogue of summin like that
Nice, Rogue’s a fun class to play
how should i join a player group
multiple answers.
"Yes" as he is a god.
"Extremely" considering his statblock for pre-godhood is a CR 26 archlich who just can't ever actually be destroyed
What's this "LFG active" role ?
it might be to track if you've recently made a post using #find-a-game instructions?
That’s probably a better question to ask in #moderator-support so a moderator can answer it, but if I had to guess I assume it’s how they track whether you’ve made a post in one of the Looking For Game channels recently
It depends on the approach you take.
A common pitfall new players fall into is making a post and waiting for a DM and a group to come to them.
Given there are more players than DMs out there, players seeking groups need to be proactive.
In this server, here are some avenues you can explore.
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are postings by DMs looking for players.
- Extra tip: Elaborate what you bring to the table, details that help a DM determine their compatibility with a player can make a difference.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690
You can also search on the forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, dnd focused discord servers, and any other website that features a virtual tabletop.

Thank you. I think I may try my luck with a post looking for dm, or try to find a community that peaks my interest

Im in the process of making my backstory for my first character and with that i have a question would a half elf be able to see the island of evermeet if they were to ever approach it being that no other race but elves can see it?
Apparently there is conflicting lore- one novel says no, another novel says yes. I'd go with what ever feels more interesting to you, 5e hasn't really made a statement on it as far as I can see.
But there is at least one example of a half-elf in evermeet: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Jorildyn
Also, it's a matter of "ask your DM"
you might have a DM or game that doesn't even step near evermeet, or you might be in a different setting entirely.
What are the common requirements for joining a game?
Some method of communicating with the group in a manner as timely as the rest of the group
some manner of punctuality for attending
and honesty to not cheat

how does weapons level like if i give someone a sword and it does 1d8 when the pc levels up how does the damage work?
Weapons don't, by default, level
The PC adds a modifier based on an ability score to their attack rolls and damage, this is what goes up over the course of them levelling
I'm just about finished with planning out my first campaign, and wanted to get the opinion of a far more experienced DM to glance over it, just to make sure I've got enough there. It's set in a fantasy-style era, around 940 with Magitech involved. It's about a group of convicts sent out to map the edges of the world, and getting wrapped up in an ancient curse. Think of Lovecraft meets Greek Mythos with a nautical exploration theme. But I'd appreciate the help regardless.
Hello, is there any good way to play dnd without a dice? Nor any equipments?
there are a buncha tools online like dnd beyond and dice rollers and whatnot so its not impossible
if you got a phone or pc it should be totaly fine
Hello, I am new to DnD. How do I play online?
There's no way to play D&D without some form of dice, be they physical or digital
That being said, there are countless free digital dice options out there
You do need some equipment to play D&D
- some form of dice
- a character sheet (paper or digital)
- pen/pencil for updating your system if you're using a paper sheet
- the Basic Rules
But you can 100% play for free without buying anything
hi guys, if my character is druid 4 and warlock 1 can i cast level 3 spells? or only upcast my second level ones to third level?
A few options. There are Virtual table tops (VTT's) like roll20. You can play over a chat service like slack, or discord with a DM, utilizing mostly theater of the imagination, DND Beyond is a phenomenally useful tool for character creation and stat/roll tracking
That's more a question for #dnd-rules
Multiclassing is a bit beyond the scope of this channel
Thanks! It's a relief that I don't need to travell far to my friends to play it.
im new and im asking the question
I was an in person only until I found the right group. We've played 10 sessions, a little over 23 hours online, and it's fantastic
And I've told you why it's not a question for this channel and why
Also, I understand the bsic concept of DnD. I.e, there is a group of adventurers who have to complete their goals, while the world they reside in, is controlled by the dungeon master..... But how do I actually 'play' it? I am sorry if this is a weird question..... I only know it's like an RPG game that involves dice...... But I don't know much else.... Please guide me sir.
That's a personal question. How one plays the game. Some members will role play really well. Others want crunchy combat and stats tracking. The best advise I can give is to ask questions, explore, and interact with the world the DM is running.
For example, the DM might describe that you all meet in a tavern, one after the other looking at a jobs posting board looking for work.
You might ask "well, what does the tavern look like?" or "What kind of conversation am I overhearing?"
The DM might pull on that thread to say "You overhear that farmer john is battling a wicked strange case of crop plague, and is offering gold to anyone that can figure it out."
above all, give your character a reason to adventure
Players say what the want to do
If what they want to do has a chance of failure, the DM will call for a roll using an appropriate ability or skill
The player adds various numbers (modifiers) to that roll
That final result is compared to a target value that the DM determines based on what they're trying to do
That's the basic structure
a DM and some players (usually 3 to 6 ish) meet together, be it in person or in an online voice call, or just playing by text posts.
The DM describes the world, events, NPCs, monsters, and so on - they play the part of all that stuff.
The Players each play an individual character in the party.
If there's no chance of failure, the action just happens
The DM will also describe the world for the players to visualise
hello, man do these books cost a ton >.>
I'm completely new to dnd and just bought the starter kit and most people have said playing through discord is easiest but umm do I use my dnd beyond to play or paper?
You can always stick to the free basic rules
Whatever you prefer
yeah, I know
Thank you everyone very much, I get most of it now.
that's not specific to DDB
Okay, well this channel is for getting help getting started
If you want to discuss the cost of playing D&D, that's more a #dnd-discussion thing
Our group uses
D&D Beyond for sheets/items/rolls and Discord for communication
like, my friend showed me his with all that books and stuff and they looked cool
alright, sorry, I started with DnD newly too >.> just watching videos about it and learning stuff
Oh okay thanks Ryan I've oddly been looking for a group 😅

can someone explain the color coding of the roles on this server? Can't find a chart
Blue = Dungeon Master or "I like blue"
Green = Player or "I like green"
Orange = Moderator
Red = Staff
Purple = Nitro Booster
The only colours that are important are Orange and Red
I know what you actually meant, but man that sounds funny out of context

- The DM describes the situation. They control the world and everyone in it except for the players.
- Each player controls one character (typically). Each person describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
Even though it's make-believe, the rules provide a shared framework among players and DM so that you don't get situations like this: "Well, my Awesome Armor of Awesome can't be hit." "Yeah, well, this bad guy has a special ability that negates Awesome items."
Woah I just heard there's a subclass for fighters where they ditch the swords/axes/hammers/etc. to go all in on their archery. What's that all about? Because it sounds cool.
Arcane Archer?
Is that what it's called?
It's the only official archer specific fighter sub-class.
Cool, now that I got the name i can look more into it. Thanks!
Battle Master can also make for a really fun archery fighter.
Any fighter subclass can use archery. Most fighters have abilities that apply to all weapons, so bows would count too. Arcane Archer is the only one that specifically says their abilities have to be used with a bow.
What would be a good class to star with ? I would like to play druid but is a bit complicated so I wanted to get first a good grasp of the mecchanics.
A martial class like fighter, barbarian, or rogue.
Any class can be used as a beginner. Certainly, they come in varying levels of complexity, but none of them are so complex that you can't learn it. If you specifically want something that's simpler though, classes that do not have spells, like the ones Old Man listed, are the best option for that
Druid isn’t to bad if you just pick a few wildshape forms one for utility one for combat
i feel like even casters are pretty easy for beginners to grasp
5e's "vancian" spellcasting is alot easier to grasp compared to previous editions or pathfinder
I am curious, which spellcasting classes some of you consider new player friendly?
I'm believe Clerics are good because they have access to a variety of spells (Attack, Defensive, Support) .
Plus because you can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest, it can allow new players to experiment.
I think I like this game but still don’t understand how to play it

imo Warlocks because people dont have to be too caught up in spell slot resource management
This game has endless possibilities I can tell
The bot post above has a ton of free great resources to help you get started.
wizards are the hardest but not terribly so. they just have a large repertoire and requires some effort bookkeeping but theyre really no more mechanically complex than the other casters
I’m so used to shooting games I have no clue what all this on my pc means lol
Articers and Rangers are good as they can contribute in combat outside of spellcasting.
Wizards are the most complicated on a mechanical level, but Druids requires the most actual content to fully play.
Well to give you a quick run down, D&D is a tabletop RPG game in which serveral people play together.
You have the players, who create their own character avatar using different race and class options.
You also have the DM, who describes the world, controls the NPCS, and everything in between.
Typically a scenario can be boiled down to a DM describes a scenario, the players do things, and if one of those things has a chance of failure, then the DM asks the player to roll a dice to determine if what the character attempted do success or fails.
I think cleric is among the easiest for the reasons you state. Paladin as well. I'm not sure if there's any consensus, though.

Can anyone help me start a campaign when I’m ready?
As a DM? Head to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
No as a player
Well, players don't start campaigns, DMs do.
One thing to note is that there are more Players than DM out thre, therefore players seeking campaigns need to be proactive in their search. A common pitfall new players fall into is making a post and waiting for a DM and a group to come to them.
That said, there are many ways you can find a campaign that is right for you.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person.
Online options in this server:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .

how many rounds is 1 minute in combat
10
Oh thats awesome!
thank you
Any reach weapons that can be used with a shield?
Reach weapons tend to have the Two-Handed property as well. The exception being the Lance and Whip weapons.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SpecialWeapons
Lance. You have disadvantage when you use a lance to attack a target within 5 feet of you. Also, a lance requires two hands to wield when you aren't mounted.
nice tysm

So I started making a character and learning about some mechanics and classes and ended up deciding on a Gunslinger! Now one thing I heard is that at some point you can do "multi classing", can anyone tell me how it works, when you can do it and why to do it?
Officially, it’s an optional rule, so you should check with your DM first.
But essentially when you level up, you could choose to take that level in a new class instead of your existing one.
Broadly speaking, it’s a move that tends to sacrifice power for versatility.
So when I do that for something like ranger I wouldn't get the extra trickshots that a gunslinger would usually get at some levels, but instead get what a ranger gets?
Yep
Thanks for that explanation! I'll ask the DM if he allows multiclassing
Is gunslinger/ranger what you were after, then? To what effect?
you may additionally want to ask if he even allows guns in his setting, as they're not guaranteed to be there.
Oh ranger was just an example I read about
Oh he does since he told me about gunslinger in the first place
He helped me choose
👍 just wanted to make sure you didn't have your heart set on a thing that wouldn't be allowed
But yeah thats a thing to watch out for 👍
just finished DnD beyond what do i do next?
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
How do I find a DM?
Check #find-a-game
Thank you sir!
How do I put together a decent cleric on my character sheet I’ve still never got the chance to play any dnd and I heard cleric is a good class
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Some of them but I’d like some advice on good races for a cleric proficiency’s and stuff like that
any race
Ok then
Ok look I’m going to level with y’all I’m about to show up to an irl session in the next few days and I’d like to look less clueless than I really am I’m asking for what would make a lv1 cleric effective in utility and battle as well as what stats are important and witch ones I don’t need to care about as much
you want to max your wis, with 14-16 con, and 14 dex
so 16-17 wis, 14 con, and 14 dex is a good stat spread
other stats dont matter
to be effective in battle, ignore weapons, just use your spells
I need advice on my character if i may interject.
bless and healing word are great options
you should have 2 cantrips and 4 prepared spells
something like guiding bolt, bless, command, and healing word is a good spell selection
And the cantrips?
for cantrips, have at least one that can do damage, others are whatever you want
Ok thanks man
sorry you get three cantrips
toll the dead and sacred flame are your main damage cantrip options
toll the dead does the highest raw damage, but sacred flame has radiant damage which can be useful sometimes
yes, this is your starting equipment:
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:
(a) a mace or (b) a warhammer (if proficient)
(a) scale mail, (b) leather armor, or (c) chain mail (if proficient)
(a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) any simple weapon
(a) a priest's pack or (b) an explorer's pack
A shield and a holy symbol
you can generally just sell the weapons tho assuming you take my advice and have damage cantrips
Ok I’ll probably keep one in case I’m forced with any anti magic crap
fair
hello
What kind of advice were you looking for, specifically?
Welcome!
So, basically i am helping a friend with her character sheet, she is a Lvl 1 rogue charlatan human named Jedediah Vanth, i need help with her saving throws and skills.
what part of the saving throws and skills?
Yes
Cool cool
So each one of those is associated with a specific ability.
Athletics, for example, uses Strength.
Yea that i knew but continue
So obviously does a Strength saving throw.
So she just needs to write down her Strength modifier next to those.
Then for anything she's proficient in, she'll add her proficiency bonus as well.
Which is a +2 for a 1st-level character.
Ok so, for dexterity i add -3 + 2?
Assuming her DEX mod is -3, yeah.
which isn't normal
(Though a -3 DEX on a rogue is gonna be tough.)
If her Score is 10, her modifier is +0.
If her DEX score is 10, her modifier should be +0, yeah.
The modifier depends entirely on the score.
And +0 is going to be very rough with a Rogue.
Wamp wamp for her then
Here's what the rogue quick build suggests:
First, Dexterity should be your highest ability score. Make Intelligence your next-highest if you want to excel at Investigation or plan to take up the Arcane Trickster archetype.
Rather than dismissing it, address the issue with candor and being amenable.
I was making a joke but yes
And this table here shows the modifier for each possible ability score.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
you're expecting at least a +3 at that level
I completely agree
A Rogue with low Dexterity is going to have a hard time, and that kind of hard time is not fun for most people.
+2
Check the table. ☝️
The reason rogues want a high dexterity is that they need a finesse or ranged weapon to use Sneak Attack, and they can use DEX for both.
It also helps with their Armor Class, which makes them harder to hit.
And Stealth, for sneaking around.
And Sleight of Hand, for pickpocketing and such.
So she'll really want to bump that number as high as she can.
Ok ok i understand
So far, she is now str 9 -1 modifier, dex 12 +1 modifier, con 7 -2 modifier, intel 17 + 3 modifier, wis 13 + 1 modifier, and char 18 +4 modifier.
Is that good? Also did i explain it in a complicated way or does it make sense.
These are rolled stats I take it?
because that's the only way you can get stats like that
As Spam mentioned, the stats should be moved around to better suit a Rogue.
Are you already a part of a campaign group or are both of you still seeking a group?
I am dm of my own group so i guess the first one
Does your friend plan to focus on investigation or plan to become an arcane trickster?
Arcane trickster
I would go 16 dex 14-16 int then
making sure to not neglect con
which is one really important thing. you want at the very minimum +1, preferably +2
unless they already fit the character better, because they're the character first and the class second
i mean, they're fun to play first
you can have fun with unoptimized stats
which, 6 hp at level 1 with a +3 to hit is not fun imo
have fun with 6hp, 12 ac, and a +3 to hit
on a class that really needs to hit
It would be best to move those stats to reflect this instead:
Str: 7
Dex: 18
Con:13
Int: 17
Wis: 9
Char: 12
This is based on the rolled stats shared before.
that's an extremely easy 1hko
with what?
they've provided an optimized build for the stats you've provided based on the class and subclass you stated, because the ability scores that are highest are the ones most utilized by those
That's really not an optimised build
that's a build that can hit enemies and won't get you oneshot at level 1
again, based on what he rolled and said he wanted to be. not the most bestest thing in the whole wide world
While I understand what you mean. Having an optimized character doesn't limit the roleplay or personality of the character.
when did he say that?
also, this isn't a matter of being the best
this is a matter of being functional and surviving
I've seen a fair number of players get lost in numbers land than care a whiff about RP due to optimization silliness
Ok welp nevertheless thank you for the advice and stuff given to me, but im sticking to the rolled stats sorry but yall just made my last two braincells eliminate themselves
thanks for bashing some peoples fun
and anyway, correlation not causaution
I do suggest using the spread they gave if you'd like to keep your character alive longer than a session or two, though
whatever you'd like, doesn't bother me at all
Aight just making sure thanks bro
Feel free to check out the handbooker helper video about building a rouge. It's straight forward and the video is just over 2 minutes: https://youtu.be/anybhrieUqg?si=O_kA-4ciqqs3AOWD
not a ton, but a little for wisdom saves and perception is always nice
Good point
if you are making survival checks you want at least a bit there too
The question should be "is my character wise? Are they perceptive, good with animals, insightful, knowledgeable about medicine, have survival skills?"
let people make a strong character if they want
stats dont directly correlate to roleplay anyway
what I just listed out are the skill checks related to the ability.
yes, but let people put their stats where they want without tying directly to their character
don't be throwing the stormwind fallacy at newbies lol, that's poor taste
I've no control over his character sheet. I was contextualizing what the wisdom ability score means in this game.
Keep in mind, having low stats for abilities outside of a class' primarily abilities if fine because D&D is a cooperative game.
If you have low charisma, the Sorcerer or Paladin has you covered.
Low wisdom leading to low perception, Ranger and Monk will have that in spades.
make the rogue proficient in everything and then call him Jack OToolen-Trades
i see that you too make scout rogues
end up with proficiency in everything, lol
With how many survival checks I was making in my last place - scout was essential my char survived because of the survival checks
I literally made my char work because of Fisher background for adv on fishing checks and had a +4 in survival which expertise in save me so many times.
Can you follow the map, can you avoid the hazards, can you get food... can you not get heatstroke in the desert. Survival survival survival.
this is where having a ranger in the party can be great
So, since my friend’s character is proeffecient in dex and intel, how do i add those up?

you mean dex and int saving throws?
Yea
okay, then you have (mod)+(PB) bonus in those saves
and just (mod) bonus in other saves
so that's a +4 to dex
Alr so hol hol up lemme cook bro
Don't forget that you have access to the basic rules and the dnd beyond character creator.
Intel mod is 4 + 2 = 6. Is that allowed?
wdym by is it allowed?
Hey! I’m new to the server, I’m Kaitlyn!
no its pretty standard
I’m also new to DND.
that's fine. it's a good saving throw number to have to add
Alr good to know
Welcome to the hobby.

Howdy
The bot post above has everything you need to get started.
I know the basics behind it, but there’s soooo much I’m new to and need to learn.
Saving throws are really important to not botch hehe
Okay! Thanks!
failure can be just as, if not more, interesting
Where’s the post?
Depends on what your DM runs, but a bad roll could make you lose a turn or take you out of the fight entirely
My character is Aeyin, a Ranger and a thief.
Up a bit. It's the one from Dyno.
You made a level 2 character?
I'm going to venture to guess that the thief part is flavor & background
For some reason I can’t see anything the bot posts except for the name, dunno why

Dammit 😭😭😭 noooo
as in a multiclassing ranger and rogue, or just a ranger who steals things?
Ranger who just steals things. Wanted to be a rogue but my club told me they can’t do magic.
So I went with Ranger.
yeah
I think the thing I get confused on are different moves/attacks and all the dice lol
Nice. Also your club is technically wrong, but they may have their own restrictions.
Oh okay
rogues can get spells with a specific subclass
I see
rangers however can just all cast spells
Do potions count as spells or no?
no, potions are a type of magic item
Sorry for all the questions! I know I interrupted the convo
Then here is the link to the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
The intro demo: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
The Handbooker Helper series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Ohh okay
nah all g
That is what this channel is for.
I know there’s a D20 and a pyramid dice, then one that looks like a diamond
good news, if your DM allows multiclassing, you can be a ranger and a rogue
Whoa
eventually, not at level 1
not recommended for new players tho
Right, because they were all at level 8 they told me to make my character level 8 too
the main dice are d20, d4 (pyramid dice), d6 (standard cube dice), d8 (diamond one), d10, and d12
Ohh okay
Is the world completely set in stone or is there room for the imagination too?
ATK bonus for a spell i suppose?
the whole game is imagination
there's one basic attack anyone can do, tho the specifics depend on the weapon you're using. as a ranger, which is mainly a weapon user, that attack is your bread and butter
I see
huh?
the world entirely depends on the group
My character uses swords and a dagger (sometimes)
Like in the character sheet is mentions attacks and spellcasting
Mostly long sword/dagger type
What spells can i put there
what class is the character? not all classes get spells
okay, so a strength ranger
Rogue
neither of those two classes are particularly complicated, and compliment each other so well that it's almost expected that it'll happen at some point
Yeah, if you're starting at level 8 it might be a little overwhelming since it's recommend to start at level 1 to take your time learning the different mechanics of the character.
Fortunately Rangers are fairly beginner level classes.
Though, don't know why they don't just have you start as an Arcane Trickster if you're starting at level 8.
Same person
what subclass?
they dont really compliment each other that well. It's really not a great idea to recommend multiclassing to new players
Hm, got it
Arcane trickster
weren't you just saying not just 5 minutes ago to let people play however they wanted?
okay, read the subclass, it explains your spells
Alr
Not sure if I wanna change it to Arcane Trickster or keep it at Ranger. I know Ranger had a lot more spells, but my character is mostly a weapons type anyways. I’ll ask my group.
rangers are still very weapon focused
Yeah
basically a matter of if you want to be nature themed or not
Variant human (it’s not boring I swearrrrr 😭)
@steep dove if you wanted to originally play rogue, but also like ranger, and you're already having to be starting at level 8, it would be worth having a conversation with your DM about multiclassing if that is something that fits the character you wanted to make
Ah okay. Maybe I’ll go back to Level 1, despite my group being Level 8, it may be easier for me to learn.
Burning hands atk bonus?
that's just an extra layer of complication, I'm not sure if that's a great idea
burning hands is saving throw based
your spell save dc is 8+pb+int mod
(as an int based caster)
probably not a great idea, you'll feel very weak and monsters will quite easily oneshot you
Ohh okay
that is unlikely to work out. a level 1 PC adventuring with level 8 PCs wouldn't be a fun time for you. you would die immediately in any fight, and the non-combat stuff will likely have DCs set much too high for you
Class more specifically.
I see
- 14 ATK bonus is that too high?
One of the group members said that Dex should be my highest
It might be easier to make the character on dndbeyond and use that to help you understand how bonuses are calculated.
it's not a plus to attack, it's a DC for a saving throw that the person(s) you are casting it on have to make.
Ok understood

For point buy, every score starts at 8, then you can spend points to increase them as you see fit.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
None of the official methods for ability scores involve rolling a d8.
i see
The rules for rolling would be to roll 4d6 and keep the highest three. Do that to get six numbers, then assign to whichever scores you want.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
alr thanks
As a dm how can i make the story more interesting
Tie things to the backstories of the characters. Players love it when the elements they thought up for their characters become relevant in the game.
Also something is bugging me
How do they respond after i read the situation
And how they would roll
Generally players just tell you what they want to try. Could be anything.
If you want to determine success or failure of that thing by a roll of the die, then you’d commonly ask them to make an ability check of some kind.
It's a conversation. You tell them they've entered the crypt, they see a small stone room with two other exits or whatever, and ask what do they do.
You’d also set a Difficulty Class (DC) for that ability check. The higher the number, the harder it is.
As a general rule of thumb, DC 10 is easy, 15 is medium, and 20 is hard.
If their roll is equal or greater than the DC, they succeed.
Maybe one of them says they want everyone to be quiet and listen real hard for a minute for anything moving around, that's a Perception check. Maybe one of them asks if there's anything carved in the walls, or anything they can figure from the initial layout, that could be History or Investigation. And you set the DCs as you see fit above.
Or they might simply say they take one of the exits, which probably doesn’t need a roll at all.
yo
Or maybe one of the exits is booby trapped, and since they weren’t cautious enough, they need to make a saving throw instead.
sup
Welcome, welcome!
thank you ^^
really wanna get into it but i dont know any beginner friendly groupings q-q
i was supposed to have a session with a friend but... well, we ain't friends no more ahah..
so i honestly never even got to use the character i have took time crafting
Oh, there’s plenty of beginner-friendly groups out there!

but how do i know which one are beginner friendly?
most of the world playstyles seems... too advanced
I was searching for those thanks
Hello
In my experience, most games are beginner-friendly even if they aren’t explicitly advertised that way.
So if you see a game that looks interesting, just ask.
im struggling to find one that seems to be time friendly (consider im from GMT +8)
Where can I find a game
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

It can be a challenge but don't fixate on time zones. Some games are played very early or very late. Use the world clock and see what fits for you.
Hey you'll find something
:( i really wanna get started...
i had waited and held back
for a year and so
rn im just trying to find sth that could fit but all doesnt.. .really fit :(
Schedules are tough to fit around sucks but eventually who knows it will line up perfectly
#looking-for-community might be another idea.
Anyone able too help with the basics of a session plan or an example of one?
can anyone help me learn dnd
Please check the resources pinned here in the channel - then if you have specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see id:browse to see all the many channels we have for specific D&D topics). We unfortunately do not have time and bandwidth to teach people D&D one on one. It's best if you do as much learning as you can on your own (read free basic rules, watch the Handbook Helper videos, watch folks play D&D on YouTube/Twitch) and then ask specific questions.
Hi, I've been lurking around D&D for ages, listened to Critical Role and whatnot and am thinking about running my own games with friends, but I need some D&D experience. Is there anywhere where I could find a game to join as quickly as possible? Thank you and sorry if this is not the correct channel for this question 🙂

Do not expect to find a game immediately (it does happen but considering D&D is a social game which involves coordinating schedules and time to meet to play for 3-4 hours... it's normally not a instant find a game setup)

I still can't decide on a race to pick for my first character. My DM showed me a lot yesterday and I'm just indecisive if I should maybe just pick smth simple like a Human or Elf
Race wont really matter that much so go with whatever sounds interesting
ive never played before is there a way i can find like a party of people ill play with a lot? it sounds more interesting than just random people
generally, finding a group online means they would be random people at first, but normally you dont change groups very often.
so if you join a game, its often a campaign and you would continue to play that with the same people
this isnt like a video game where you do co-op with some randoms and then move on
k
so i find one group then keep playing
i thought id have to find a new group everytime or get some irl friends to play it with me lol
ideally. Sometimes it wont work out but dont be discouraged too much by that
yeah it seems like a lot of people wanna play
They do, DM's are in short supply normally.
Sorry didnt mean to muddy the water, you find a group and play with them for as long as you can.
damn
if it was just one group for a long time it would be way better because i can find one PERFECT ONE like perfect setting etc but doing that many times will be draining and take lots of time waiting
being a DM is usually a fair bit of extra work and responsibility, and many people just wanna play their character ideas.
the result is that there are more people who wanna be players than places where they can do that.
this doesnt really result in players dropping in and out of games a lot but rather than DMs often have a lot of people wanting to join their games so they have to chose amongst the applicants
so newcomers get left out a lot
id say i would be dm but that means i would have to learn like everything off the bat so thats off the table
ill just play a few short ones while i get used to everything
Finding a good table is a lot like dating because D&D is a social game. It will take time, like dating, to see if you can get along with other players.
k just gotta find a table with people i like to play with
not necessarily. many DMs do games exclusively for newcomers for example
It doesn't always work out. I had four players leave my table for various reasons.
before i do that are there any things i should learn
The rules of the game.
I mean, it's possible (speaking as someone who's doing that right now) it's a lot of work but it is something that you can do, especially if you find a group of people who are all learning with you. I don't particularly recommend it though.
more experienced players are not necessarily better players, as being a good D&D player is more linked to social behavior than rules mastery
k ill find one does the dm like tell you "nope you cant do that"
ill just look through the most basic rules for like 30 mins and find a table
Might want to give it a little more than 30
If you want to learn the basics of the game, this is the channel for you.

maybe i read that over then come here to ask questions

Hey who play DND beyond
I have played some Dnd Beyond in my time
Hey anybody looking for two players to join? we're pretty much down with anything
Check #find-a-game
Oh thanks! sorry
You don't really 'play' DNDBeyond, it's more like using DNDBeyond to play D&D. It's like how you don't 'play' Steam or PS.net or Xbox Live.
It's just a toolset for D&D, not really a different thing
:P
Is it not?
"The official home and digital toolset for Dungeons & Dragons."
Same idea as how you don't 'play steam' (the digital storefront and launcher and hub for games), you play a game using steam. With how nitpicky and specific terminology can get in DND, it's better to build a habit of accuracy early, imo
That and it's also more accurate as to what DDB is :P
Yeah people are nit picky
Auditor is making a relevant distinction that's pertinent to this channel
and in DND especially so, given the rules, and wanting to know what the other person is talking about. For example, attacks are distinct things, so not just any offensive thing, and ability checks are another, specific kind of roll.
Making it clear so newcomers understand
Well done auditor.
It's kinda a matter of people being nitpicky due to wanting to maintain definitions, and it's also a matter of the game being nitpicky due to out-of-the-box terminology.
For example, referring to things you can do (usually from traits, features, even feats) as "moves" can be misleading/confusing, given how your Move is a specific thing on your turn, as is your movement, and your speed.
Hello! I've watched people play dnd online but I've never played myself... is there a good way to get into it without feeling completely overwhelmed with information?

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
The real task is finding a game and people to play with.

@solemn light true!
Hey kinda still new to the game, had a friend talk me a bit through character creation and he DM’d a kinda tutorial dungeon for a group of us noobs about a year ago but the group fell apart after that. So I have been holding onto this character that I kinda fleshed out a bit of backstory playing BG3 and finally figured out how some of the mechanics that hadn’t really clicked in that tutorial game. Differences and uses for short and long rest and spell slot that one took me 60 freaking hours to figure one. Anyway would really like to try out my character in a campaign and learn more of the mechanics I haven’t quite grasped yet.

Yeah there are
I know that temporary hitpoints are things like shielding or basically overheal from some things, but does it have like a specific length on how long it lasts or is it just seperate from normal HP to nerf certain spells
Like does temporary HP have anything else special about it other than
You can only get it from one source at a time
It sits ontop your normal hitpoints
Unless a feature that grants you temporary hit points has a duration, they last until they're depleted or you finish a long rest.

how to do you play wizard im confused about the learning spells and preperation stuff
This video might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFYbfM73z40
Can I learn a cantrip if I'm a lvl 1 elf ranger because of my background?
Which background?
I'm not aware of any backgrounds that give you a cantrip, except maybe the backgrounds from the Strixhaven book and possibly the Dragonlance book.

Hey all. New player really into exploring the Forgotten Realms. Only played D&D a few short sessions spread over many many years, but recently got drawn back to it due to a family member. Hopefully finally get a chance to play a larger full campaign, or otherwise just more consistent sessions.

Hey I’m on D&D beyond and I can’t figure out why it’s saying my character is incomplete.
#ddb-support may help you out
Nevermind I figured it out. Thank you
Oh oh I’m a newcomer
Awesome
Welcome
Welcome to the addiction I mean game
I have my own species called dark matter being who are made of dark magic. Can I just pick a random race and still use my custom one in a campaign?
If the dm is cool with it
likely not, though that's a conversation to have with whatever DM you have
Ok thank you. I’m still learning the basics and it would be nice to use the character I already costume made a background and species for. I feel like there should be a custom species choice in D&D beyond
That would suck but ok maybe I should make a new character. I do tend to get attached to an idea too easily. Maybe something new will be good for me
Yeah allways best to pick baced on world but for giggles what ability’s did your race have
Fe example there are shadow elves that are a thing in the races
Their powers are healing, teleportation, flying/floating, item/food manifestation and acid.
How is this game
My new race is Aarakocra or something idk it’s a bird
again, be ready for a DM to say no to this and/or for you to change some elements of it.
Check mark of shadows or shadow kai elf they have similar ability’s
Yeah I’ll keep the species to myself actually. Maybe I’ll make a comic
There are a lot of bird races
Owlin (owls) and Kenku (flightless crows)
You could also reflavor Aasimar since they get a racial flight ability
which lasts for 1 minute, and only if you choose that specific revelation
Yeah, you would need to choose radiant soul. Aasimar is still a good option for reflavoring
That's a bit of an assumption. I'd always be willing to give them a try. As long as they can make themselves clear and the game is good, I'd be happy.
The Golgari Swarm background has a spell list with a cantrip I was wondering if I would be able to use it
Exotic. Ask your DM. If you don't have a DM, do as you like.
Ok, ty
Those spell lists add to your classes spell list if your class has a spell list
Meaning it just gives you more cantrip options to choose from, it doesn't give you those cantrips instantly
Okay
I think maybe you're misunderstanding, Golgari Swarm is an official background found in Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica
Hey everyone, I am new to DnD and I want to get into the game with a couple of fresh players as well
Is it possible to play DnD at base level without paying money? Thanks

Okay, thanks
it is indeed possible, the basic rules are free and provide all of the essential info. The rest of the books provide extra options and content.
What would be the main drawback of not having money to spend on DnD?
you would be rather limited with official character options and adventures etc.
So if I can make homebrew content then I should have no problem?
using free homebrew would give you a lot of additional stuff yeah
of course the DM and players need to be okay with making/using homebrew
No one in my group except me even knows there's official adventures, so that shouldn't be a problem :P
What am I supposed to fill out at "Allies and Organizations" and "Character Backstory"
Character backstory is something you come up with on your own
though generally, once you have a DM, you work with them to integrate everything into their world
You backstory is basically what your character did that lead up to them becoming an adventurer. Keep in mind that your PC has literally zero experience (hence 0 xp) as an adventurer so don't write that your character slew an ancient dragon.
Allies and organizations are just that: your allies and any organizations you belong to.
I wanted to ask how leveling up should be scaled? I am trying to learn dming to run a very heavy role play and the occasional combat game with some of my close friends. We decided to not go rule heavy but I don’t want to mess with the leveling up and since a lot of stuff is gonna be homebrew, I wasn’t sure how I should scale leveling
What do you mean "scale leveling"?
You either can go back the Experience Points (XP) method or Milestone method to determine when the PC level up.
Theres a chart somewhere on DnDBeyond with the levels and you can search up enemies to see how much exp they drop
just do milestone, IMO
Character Advancement table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
less overhead to spreadsheet over, and you can do it at your own pace instead of accidentally making demigods in 3 weeks
Well uhhh, a lot enemies are also gonna be home brew. Since it’s a campaign based on a game we all play
Oh yea that makes sense
the recommended pace in the DMG of leveling is every 3-4 four hour sessions. this is faster than what most people do, but I wouldnt go much slower than that
I go by chapters not sessions because sometimes literally nothing happens (in terms of pushing the campaign plot ahead) in a session. I've had players spend half the session just RPing with each other.
You can use this as a reference, idrk tho
media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/MM_MonstersCR.pdf
I just found it online
Its outdated tho
We are gonna be role playing mostly so I was thinking when they get into combat (planed or unplanned) I could level them up after a few fights, fights getting harder and leveling up taking longer of course
If you level up the PCs too fast/often it makes it harder for you to try to make the fights more challenging. Remember that the players control the pacing but you control when they level up.
I am just scared they will find a way to make a machine gun or something since nearly everything is gonna be home-brew
just fyi, leveling time is supposed to stay roughly the same after level 4-5.
I have a lot of attacks and spells I need to turn into dnd stats but I want them to be accurate to the game while still not being too op or with too many rules
level 1-3 are faster
Oh I did not know that
I assumed it would take longer each level
Thank you so much everyone!
I am a bit more confident now
And if they make a machine gun , we will deal with it if comes to there
as DM, you can and should set limits
machine gun tech isnt something that was created in a vaccum in the real world, so there is no reason to think PCs can skip decades, centuries of development
I don’t think it’s possible for them to do as I made something similar to spell slots for the attacks they do with elements (that’s mostly how everyone does attacks as everyone can use magic, tho they can chose not to)
Not an actual machine gun, but you know, rapid fire
What's the game?
It’s a game called Deepwoken in roblox
In the end I just want my friends to enjoy the game, I am confident with my story telling , world building and improv but I don’t want them to feel lack luster in the game mechanics!
I read an action is 6 seconds long, do bonus actions spend any time?
You're right, I've never heard of it.
A round is six seconds. Everything happens in that time, everyone's moves, actions, the lot.
So if some did a bonus action then an action on their round it would still be 6 seconds?
a round is 6 seconds. every creature has a turn in that time span and those are technically happen simultaneously, but are dealt with in initiative order.
so everything you do on your turn, plus your reaction, all happens within 6 seconds
I see, so a full round and everyone elses actions too they all happen in 6 seconds?
I am learning way more
yeah.
this isnt really a question with an objective answer. some tables have fun with spending multiple sessions mostly talking to each other, while for others, a session without at least one combat will seem like a waste of time
I'd say you do too much RPing if you roleplay very mundane stuff that doesnt interest anyone at the table
While there isn’t a definitive answer, I would say to mostly see how players react around you. And only rping without interacting with your fellow players or not letting anyone talk
yeah, a round is 6 seconds, everyone's turn is what they do in those 6 seconds
Another example are players who abuse "I'm just doing what my character would do" as an excuse to act stupid or make things harder on the others in the party
Hey, I've never played or had any involvement in DnD before? What are some resources to read up on/watch, to get myself caught up?
Also, a question, when being a DM, do I have to use classes/characters/maps etc solely from the DnD universe, or can it be fully custom?
Check the pinned messages here in the channel for some useful "getting started" resources.
As a DM you can allow or not allow as much "homebrew" content (not officially made or third-party made) things as you want - that said homebrew can be wildly unbalanced compared to official or third-party material which usually has gone through several rounds of playtesting before being published. So your mileage may vary.
Ah, okay understood. So if I just play a casual game with a couple well-versed friends, it doesn't matter, but a serious official game I have to be careful with.
Just double checking, I play 40k and I know you can be as tight or laxed with rules as you want, depending on who you play with 😅
Yeah DM has a lot of leeway there - just remember the rules of the game help establish boundaries and expectations of the game mechanics and provide a common base of understanding for everyone playing. Going too far away from them can make the game break down to the point you may be better off using a different game system. Same thing the other way too: trying to make the game rules and mechanics cover topics/material that the game wasn't designed around/for (e.g. trying to play WH40K with D&D rules) will likely lead to a breakdown and you'll be better off using a game system that was designed for those topics and themes.
Yeah, "it's what my character would do" isn't really an excuse for actively adversarial impacts, since they made the character that would do that.
uh.. hello
Im pretty new to dnd and I really want to learn, I hope I learn alot from here.

That is truly annoying! That’s why the DMs should be careful and warn players if their behavior is derailing the game entirely or is bothering other players ! I find talking about boundaries and sensitive topics before starting a game really helpful .
I think it’s a must even when players are close friends
anything the player decides their character does is a decision of the player, yeah. Sometimes, there are genuine "this is an unfortunate situation I find I must perform, with plenty of precedent and foreshadowing" moments, but those are few and far between - definitely not a "my rogue sneaks off with the money on the first night" deal.
yeah, not all friends are good DND friends, is an important thing to keep in mind.
Sometimes it's not even to be a jerk, but because the player genuinely wants their character to be a certain way.
IMHO rogues are one of the most succeptible to this, because it puts them in situations where they lie, steal, or merc someone and those actions can impact the whole party's reputation with NPCs
As an example, in a game I am running, there is a Warlock with the Undead patron, which the party assumes to be a Lich. They've shown themselves over many sessions to be a little bit selfish, talking to a quasit, their patron, and blasting at a bounty even through a party member. If a betrayal comes, it's going to have been earned.
These aren't really adversarial occasions either, it's a matter of the character's attitude when furthering the party's common goals. Everyone at the table has, at a player level, been having fun with the game, the important part. Their characters may be butting heads, but the players are having a grand time.
Basically: if game = fun, game = good.
Hello guys, I am new to DnD, never played a game in my life. but I know the basics and I have a general idea how to play. I want to play my first game online. any suggestions where should I start?
I already created a character sheet, how I can find my first game ? thanks

The above #find-a-game channel can tell you how to use the Looking-For-X channels here, and you can also chekc out other sites like r/lfg on reddit, or roll20's own find a game and so on.
My suggestion is look out for games marked newbie friendly, and also consider games that are Adventure League (Official Play, so long as your PC follows AL rules for creation, you can theoretically jump into any AL game of the appropriate level that has space), westmarch (servers with multiple DMs and players, that run games whenever a DM can, and who ever is available can join if there is space) and oneshots (games that are intended to last one or a few sessions).
These are good ways to meet people and build up networks- for online games, people can sadly be a bit flakey and also it's almost like dating- you're gonna be spending hours every week or so with these people so you need to know you're all going to get along, so low commitment games that let you go seperate ways if you don't click means you can find people you vibe with and slowly build a group together.
Thanks! i will check that out
should i start completely clueless about DnD for a better experience?
like i know nothing type new so would i enjoy it more than try to optimize my first playthrough or something

basic rules basic rules got it, do all online games require a microphone by the way?
every game is different, i think most prefer a mic, but it's different for each group
I didn’t even know there was a newcomers chat 😭 what a saving grace -
The bot post above has an intro demo you can try out.
It plays more like a choose your own adventure book.'
Welcome to the hobby.
yeah i played the demo thing its limited sadly
the way I really started to grasp the concept of how 5e works was by playing Baldur's Gate 3. It's a little different in some aspects, but for figuring out movement, spell slots, actions, bonus actions, it really halped

interesting, any other ways you know of?
Im currently “studying “ the guides I can find
But I’m really overwhelmed with retaining all the information that is needed to become a good DM
I believe there are some solo play dnd stuff out there, which I believe play more like a choose your own adventure.
Though keep in mind that a big part of dnd is the social play that comes with playing with a group as it is a cooperative game.
me personally? not really. once you figure out the basic rules, have built a character and all that, you could just... make-believe an encounter, try rolling some dice and figuring out what kind of damage you deal, find a monster's stat block and try fighting it
prolly not something for the very very new people, but it's a way of figuring things out
Within the dnd space there is D&D Adventurers League, D&D official community campaign that usually involves a DM posting a game and playing with AL created characters apply.
is there an AI that manages DnD games? or simulate one at least
dont believe so
read, read, read, read, read, practice, improvise, read some more
i think you read the rule books well and make up stuff
you could also ask in #dm-discussion
Which ate the best books for unlocking the mist races subclasses classes and so on in dnd beyond? The cheaper the better
I've seen some chatbot-types that attempt to emulate the experience, but I don't think I'd recommend it for actually learning the game
I don’t think I’m ready for the DM discussions just yet 😅 I’m fairly new
understood
everyone in that channel was new at one point ❤️
Yes.
- Start with a pre-written adventure.
- Understand that you don't need to have every rule memorized.
- If there is a rule you don't know about, make a ruling that you believe is fair, afterwards look it up and let your group know what the official ruling is to avoid confusion moving forward.
- Communication with the group your expectations, boundaries, and preferences contribute to fostering a compatible group.
- Come up with ways to turn bad rolls into fun moments at the table.
- Be a team player and work with your party. After all, D&D is a cooperative game.
Your right~ ✨🫶🏾
Wow! These are actually good tips because I cram on trying to understand and remember all the rules and I feel like I’m going crazy lol

I got my first set of dice like 1 year ago because I wanted to play with my friends, but we never really kicked it off.
If you are new to D&D, bot post above has everything you need to get started.
don't tell anyone but the dice are the best part of D&D
Where are some places to buy cool (but budget-friendly) dice? And are liquid core dice good?
support your local game store, i'd say
Thank you! Actually not that new but this is the first time i have joined an official channel, also felt like a good plac to say hello
like the gamestop in my mall? or are there other common places?
So I've been looking at bladesinger wizard to try for my next character, what makes it not incredibly broken? It sounds pretty strong to me, which brings a 2nd question can you combine the weapon from shadow blade with cantrips like booming blade?
game stores are typically the nerdy hang-out spots, wherever you can buy board games, figurines, comic books, etc. is most likely where you'll find D&D stuff
they might not be common around where you live, though
The people over at #optimization can give you some great info on that.
They can provide context in comparison to other wizard subclasses
Hi everyone
Welcome

Try point-buy or standard array first, see how it looks.
Had my first proper dnd session yesterday 😞 immediately got shot by goblins and was on 1hp the whole fight
Did you go down? Did you win? Did you have fun?
most important thing is having fun
1 hp isnt that big of a deal really

oh sorry 😭
Young people play D&D. I played D&D when I was around 11 or 12.
oh wow
Some people that advertise their campaigns in this server might include a line that says something along the lines of "no minors" but that is just their own personal preferences, not server rules
ok yeah this is what i meant
but alright thanks
Hello everyone! I'm looking for some "light-reading", I'm not sure if that is a legit use, about D&D lore. What can you suggest? Thx in advance.
Is there any Warlock subclass that gets Inflict Wounds btw?
Want to try a character that can use touch ranged spells through their familiar(s)
Folks in #dnd-lore can point you to various lore resources. Not sure "light" will be applicable seeing as D&D is now 50 years old...
Folks in #character-discussion can probably help you figure out if there's a subclass with that feature or potentially how to achieve it.
Also if I take the Wizard Magic Initiative feat and pick Summon Familiar and also have Chain Warlock’s Summon Familiar, can I have two familiars out at a time?
No
You can't have more than one familiar at a time. If you cast this spell while you already have a familiar, you instead cause it to adopt a new form.

Pact of the Chain simply modifies the effect of the normal Find Familiar spell. It is not its own thing. Learning Find Familiar through other methods does not get past the restriction that you can only have 1 familiar at a time
hey guys
heyo \
ive never played legit dnd before and i dunno how to find a group,i want to play but also could probably only join 2 times a weekish for vc, what/how could i do to find a group?
i made a character sheet on the dndbeyond site but idk how to go about joining people
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Same here. I should have read both questions first.

silly me
“Same here” as in “same answer”, not “me too”.
#find-a-game is where you’ll want to start.
Mm thank you
coolio
I see dnd beyond as the main way to find stuff but it seems kinda pay to acces for some stuff. How could i go about researching allowed playable races and making a character sheet?
I made my character sheet on the dnd website lol
the basic rules gives you access to a fair amount of races. a DM whose campaign you are joining will likely tell you what, if any, races aren't allowed in their games. And, if they have a D&D beyond master tier subscription, you can get access to all the books they own and possible other races
Dndbeyond is excellent for beginner players, but it is pay to access a lot. Allowed playable races will vary by DM, its best to wait until you've got a DM for making a character sheet
What’d you make? 👀
Let’s get things back on topic, please.
usually you get a message or dyno pop-up as to why a message is removed.. but any questions can go to #moderator-support
so its better to not make a character sheet yet to see what the DM says
Generally, yeah. But there’s no harm in making random ones on your own time
Greetings. I want to get back to the game after two dacedes away. I am a DM and need resources such as maps. Any good place to buy such in Europe? Thank you
Keep in mind that dnd has changed a lot in the past 2 decades
3E came out in 2000
4E came out in 2008
5E came out in 2014
5.5E comes out this year (2024).
As for maps check out #dnd-maps for your map needs.
Not sure where to post this exactly but if want to post into the "find a game" channel, does the post itself need to already be formatted perfectly or will be it auto corrected?
