Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
So question
My dm just told me I needed to level up
But I’m not sure how to do that…?
What class are you, and what level are you going from/to?
And are you using D&D Beyond or just a physical or PDF character sheet?
I’m a level 1 monk and I’m using a physical character sheet
They said I needed to get to level 5 at least??
the first thing you do is you get another hit dice of your class and roll or add the average (+con mod) to your total HP. Then you look at the class table to see what features you get and if your proficiency bonus changes
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
This part of the rules basically recaps what Omegon said: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ClassFeaturesandHitDice
Your DM should tell you whether you roll for HP or use the average.
If you're a level 5 monk, you should note on your character sheet all the abilities and features you'd get from levels 1 through 5: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/monk
hey im new to dnd and i was wondering if a ranger can multiclass into a cleric and if so, what level/how
Any class can multiclass into another if they meet the requirements. You can multiclass starting at level 2 (one class in ranger, one in cleric).
The rules for multiclassing are here, but multiclassing is more for #character-discussion. This channel focuses on the basics of the game, and multiclassing is beyond the basics.
The way multiclassing works is basically that when you level up, you can choose to take another level in your original class, or take a level in a new class. So for example, at level 2, you could be a level 2 ranger, or you could be 1 level ranger and 1 level cleric
really?
I mean, I wouldn't lie
With this rule, you have the option of gaining a level in a new class whenever you advance in level, instead of gaining a level in your current class.
From the link I included!
Hey yall I’m Cat and I’m new here and to DND in general and I’m trying to understand elf aging but I’m struggling a bit and hoping maybe someone here may be able to help!
Your question may be best suited for #dnd-lore. The wiki for the Forgotten Realms, the most extensive setting in D&D, may be of interest here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Elf
Ah ok I wasn’t sure where to ask! Thank you!!
I’ve been looking through dnd beyond and like different sites about the lore but am still slightly confused lol
There's a lot of lore out there, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of it is contradictory (and/or folks repeat inaccuracies).
Oh yeah that makes sense

How can I join or play with others
See the post above!
Oh ok
i got a question.. my gf and i will be joining a group of her sister.. they already have some characters, not everyone will always make it, we start at level 2 to join them
i'm struggling to find a good balanced race/class choice here.. in terms of classes they are already balanced but in terms of races they are leaning towards elves.. it will be a bit more nature focused game from talking a bit
we already have
Dwarf Bard - Chaotic Neutral
Woodelf Druid - Chaotic Good
Halfling Cleric - Neutral
Autumn Eladrin Elf Warlock - Lawful Neutral
Woodelf Fighter - Chaotic Good
my gf wants to join as an Owlin, i myself also want to bring mor variety into it.. classes we both aren't sure yet tho...
does anyone have some good suggestions?
Wizard, to patch up the party INT, and a paladin or ranger might fit in well.
Artificer or monk can also keep things interesting
in a more nature oriented campaign with elves, an artificer would be a bit weird no?
Would be an interesting contrast. First step in making a character: must work with a party.
Plus you can always flavor the artificer class to something that fits the aesthetic of a nature oriented campaign.
battle woodworker with wodden creations
or alchemist artificer that uses homeopathy but it actually works
hi
im new to this
ive only got a 4 sentence history and a barebones map
anyone wanna help?
If you're trying to work out a setting, head to #dm-world-building. If you're trying to plan a game's plot, that'd be #dm-discussion.
Tackle each one in the appropriate channels, but you have to decide which to focus on.
You gotta be patient and give people more than a handful of minutes to respond. It's also helpful if you specify the kind of guidance you're after.
Also, noone is obligated to answer you so sometimes you won't get a response.
HIIIII
with very limited exposure to dnd i've never really seen or heard much about pc betrayals of the party, are those things generally allowed?
I imagine so, but it can be deemed "Not cool, Bro,"
D&D is a group collaborative game. Such "PC betrayals" should be brought up in a session 0 as part of the expectations of the game.
At my table, I ban PvPing because it wastes my valuable free time as DM.
thats understandable. If everyone consents how would it work? because the way i pictured it would be something happening that makes the betraying character exit from the party and then handing the character off to the dm to become an npc.
Is a pc becoming an npc something that can happen??
It can happen yes, but it's best to discuss it with all players and the DM ahead of time
Each table is different. There's one answer how it's handled.
Remember everyone is to have fun at the table and not at other's expense.
well yeah that seems self explanitory- i dont imagine most people go into the games without thinking about the other players right?
I am still learning the ability scores I was told by a DM that having odd numbers is bad due to only even numbers really only increasing the Modifier is that true? 🤔
Odd and even numbers provide a modifier, they do increase on the even numbers though. You can always use an ASI bonus or feat to increase a stat.
Some do. It's why it's important to set expectations via something like a session 0 early on.
True, but ASI is also a feat and with me being in a Module up to level 12 and with milestone based leveling, feats are far and few between. 🤔
huh- i guess i just thought the main appeal of dnd was the interactions between the pcs and dm-
that and the fancy dice i guess
It definitely is but not everyone comes in with the same expectations
you could take a half feat instead
a feat that also provides a +1 in a stat
pretty much. modifier increases each even number, so odd numbers are a bit of a waste without specific reasons
One example where it could be a good idea is say you're a charisma based character
hi im rather new to the dnd group (have played one session with a friend who is really into it im playing a rogue) and i was wondering what and how the concept of mounts and or pets applies to teh rogue class is there an option to have any later or not really? (sorry if it is a stupid question
you could start with 17 charisma, then at your first feat/asi, take the fey touched feat
that gives you +1 to charisma for 18 and a +4 modifier, as well as getting other benefits
Rogues don't get any special pets or mounts as class features.
if you'd only been at 16 charisma, then to get to a +4 mod you would have needed to take an asi for +2 cha, and not gotten the chance to get the other benefits of fey touched
thanks i have a few of the books but i couldnt seem to find any info on it as such
Look into rangers.
arcane trickster find familiar if they don't want shield or absorb elements
Well this is what I have:
Strength: 16 (14+2)
Dex: 8
Con: 15
Int: 8
Wisdom: 10
Chrisma: 16 (15+1)
This is for a Paladin Oath of Crown 🤔
how far into dnd games can you get without the books? like are they essential to the game or is it possible to skirt by without them?
you can play entirely without any of the books
just use the free online basic rules
seems quite good
You can play D&D without the rulebooks, you just need to use the basic rules which does not have that much customization for characters
so if you wanted a character that was a bit more out there you'd need to get some of the books?
Not necessarily, the rulebooks give way more races, subclasses and spells
You can make a great character, but more rulebooks give official rules for different races
For example, Van Richten's guide to Ravenloft gives a subrace for undead characters, however you can only access it in the official rulebook
Hi, I'm new to the group and living in Japan. I'm looking for a group in the same timezone, but I'm willing to find one outside it!
Hi! I recommend looking in #750812887697588356 to have a DM find you, #looking-for-players to look for a DM that fits your wants or #paid-looking-for-game if you are willing to spend money for a game (usually the DMs are very high quality as it's their job)
That is mostly online, if you want to look for a game centered in Japan then I recommend checking your local gamestore to see if there is an active campaign or you can look for adventurers league which is organized play and can be safer since there is official rule
I'm fine with playing online too!
Nice! I hope you have a great time finding a group
hallo
Hi
Oi
Hello there im new and how does the online dnd sessions work
Depends on how the DM decides to play the game.
There are tons of ways to play online. No one specific answer
?tag new online
Ngl i come from bg3 i know most about some of that lore but i would be interested in new things
If you are coming from BG3, there’s 2 important things to keep in mind:
- The lore for that game is for one specific setting, called the Forgotten Realms. If you join a campaign, your DM might have made their own setting, or be using a different official one, or have changed some aspects of that one
- BG3 was based on D&D 5e, but they made a lot of changes to the rules when they turned it into a video game. Playing BG3 will give you a great foundation to work off of, but don’t assume that everything will be exactly how you remember it. You should still read through the rules carefully, so that you are aware of the changes
So i got nobody around who would be good to play DnD with so can someone gimme advice on how to take people hostage for a DnD game?
Find local game stores or clubs or groups, check universities, facebook, warhorn, meetup, Craigslist
Like any social activity the more proactive you are the more likely you’ll find people

Hey, I am dming for a session and all my players are new, would it be an idea to make a pc to kinda help and baby them a little bit
I would avoid a DMPC but rather a sidekick instead.
Do not make a DMPC.
So just do an NPC
Okay. How come DMPCs are unrecommended?
conflict of interest, metagaming risk, volatile and often running into being either spotlight-hogging or pointlessness
That is actually very enlightening, thank you.
It's like having all the cheats in your hand as easy as just saying it. And you've got other people without cheats. You know everything in the game as the DM - or at least, are the arbiter of it, which is a mantle of both great power and great responsibility.
Hi
Hey if i wanted to play with some people what should i do?
check out #looking-for-players , #looking-for-community or make a post in #750812887697588356 !
I was thinking about playing a Kenku Vengeance/Oathbreaker Paladin of the Raven Queen
Anyone have any good edgy character name ideas?
that's more a #character-discussion question
Oh thats a channel
@next trail A d6 is one of the dice you need to play D&D
Ok! thank u
But you will need a full set, consisting of
- d4
- d6
- d8
- d10
- d12
- d% (a special type of d10)
- d20
Thank you very much!
Dice are usually sold in sets consisting of one of each
Nice! Will be easier to get 'em all then 😄
I dont get the difference between rolling a d10 and d100
Like it doesnt matter if you roll a 40 or a 4, you can just imagine it being *10
Because you can't roll a 45 or 67 or 93 on a d10
That's rolling a d100...
But rather than rolling two d10s and saying "This one is the tens", you have a dice that is pre-numbered with the tens
Yeah but you dont NEED a d100 to be able to play
You mean a d%, right?
Ye
No, you don't, but it makes things a lot easier
Like how you don't need two d20s, but given how commonplace rolling 2d20 is, it makes things easier
Plus you can roll a d% as a d10 if you need to
so it's basically the same as having 2d10 but with a little bit more functionality
From my experience, four sets of dice covers things nicely enough
True, once you have four, you'll never come short.
You can roll for stats and roll most of the big dice spells without too many rescoops
But as long as you have two d10, you'll be fine, the percentile makes it easier, but it's not required
True, for advantage and disadvantage. Players rarely need to roll a percentile die.
hello guys
Howdy.
how are you?
Doing well! Do you have questions?
yes sorry for the late reply
i'm like super new, i found a character sheet and tried my hand at making something but idk what im even looking at lol
Have you looke dup guides on it, or have the players handbook?

Awesome. You can go to #find-a-game for instructions on how to start looking for one, if you feel ready
Hey there
Welcome to the server!
Thank you. How's it going?
Not bad. Do you have questions about getting started with D&D?
I do. Is the official starter set a good place to, well, start lol. Like does it do a good job of explaining how the game works in an easy-to-digest way?
Which starter set are you considering?
The Dragons of Stormwreck Isle set
I haven't played or read it myself, but a lot of folks say it does a really good job of making the game clearer for new players and DMs. Plus, it has everything you need to get started all in one box instead of needing to buy (or find) things separately.
I personally think it's a great adventure, having run it. Everyone had fun with the story, and everyone loves dragons.
Sounds good to me then, I just wanted to get a second opinion before pulling the trigger on it
If you find it unclear, there's plenty of free resources online you can check out to help you through, whether you're running or playing.
I've heard it's a good intro for new DMs. Plus you can always supplement. This is my recommended starting point: https://howtogm.guide/
And of course we have #dm-discussion.
Bookmarked for later
Which book/starterkit/whatever is recommended for a group that has never really played D&D?
I know a good bit about it but never played so I'd probably be the DM for a group of friends who likely never played it either
Player's handbook
I mean like, for the campaign
Lost mine of phandelver is often used as a starter campaign
I recommend dragon of icespire peak because the campaign in broken up into individual quests while also providing additional quests that the party can gain from exploring and interacting with npcs.
Wilds Beyond the Witchlight is very newcomer friendly, in addition to the various starter set adventures
are the starter kits not great?
or should I just jump in straight with a full campaign
well which one would be good for a first time group?
the recent one? stormwreck isle?
Having the campaigns broken up individual quests also make it easier for the DM as it makes it clear what they need to prep.
The latest Starter Set is the easiest to find in stores
But they're all equally good for newcomers IMO
do I also need to buy a PHB or are the basic rules fine?
All starter set adventures work with the Basic Rules
Witchlight is also good.
I recommend playing the pre-quel adventure made for it to get the most of it.
Full adventures assume you have the core three books
You can play full adventures with just the basic rules for the most part however you may bump up against issues
Usually in the form of either MM only monsters, or DMG only rules
Basic rules are fine.
Starter sets come with copies of the basic rules.
so would I need much past just the stormwreck isle starter kit?
to start playing with friends
I guess you'd just use pencils on the character sheets and then erase once you're done with the campaign
since they're unique ones
Or print out character sheets and copy the info over
Or make your own characters using the basic rules
Also, IDK if this has been mentioned yet or not, but if you are interested in Stormwreck Ilse, "Intro to Stormwreck Ilse" is available for free online. This is the first chapter of the full campaign, and can function as a good introduction or way to test the game out before purchasing anything
Hello am new to dnd and i would like to Know i there a dnd 5 edition adventure with great old one

Hello, I am new to Dnd entirely. I haven't played a campaign before. However, I am willing to learn! Any tips or things you recommend for a first time player?
Read the post just above.
Hi, my husband and I are super newbies to d and d. I am wanting to learn how to DM and my husband is wanting to learn how to be a player. Can you play d and d with one character and a DM? If so, any suggestions on practice adventures or campaigns would be super helpful.
It's possible but most adventures are designed for 3 to 5 players (with one DM).
Here are some resources on one-on-one D&D:

New, never played properly before
Scroll up to the [bot message](#dnd-newcomers message)
Dang. Ya i figured. its tough to find people to play with that are new too or that have the patience to teach not one but two newbies. lol. but i didnt want that to stop us from learning and enjoying together. you're awesome! thank you so much for the info
no i know how beyond works but since i dont own artificer stuff from that expansion i cant see the class on beyond so im resorting to manually leveling up characters that choose that class.
This is called duet play, and while it does go against the game's design, folks have made workarounds. Check out https://dndduet.com/ and the adventures written by the creators of that site.
Could someone help me make a character I'm new to DND and don't know what I'm doing with race/class

Are ASIs player or class level dependent?
Class dependent.
Thanks
Also any tips for stubborn players? Like ones who are new and trying to multiclass because they saw someone make a build in a YouTube video
Talk to them and tell them your house rules. As DM you have final say on character sheets.
Multi classing is not recommended for new players. As the best way to multi-class is to have an in depth understanding of the individual classes.
can you give more context to what you mean? I'm not sure I fully understand the question
It should be noted that multi classing, if done incorrectly, runs the risk of a character being sub-par at both classes’ abilities instead of being good at a single class.
Hey I’m completely new to dnd and was wondering how to find a group to play with preferably with other new players and also have a character I would like to suggest to see if it’s allowed or would work and get some peoples opinion

What type of vehicles can I make as an artificer? Like can I make a tank
Rules as written, artificers cannot make any vehicles. Beyond the rules, that's entirely up to your DM
Artificer do not have any class features that give them access to unique crafting abilities, other than their infusions, which is a predetermined list of items.
Any crafting you do other than your infusions is a role play element, which means its determined by your in-universe abilities and resources, rather than being granted to you by your class. Your DM will be the one that ultimately decides what is possible in this regard.
5e itself isnt really built handle vehicles; if thats the type of game play you’re looking for there may be better systems
I mean, there are vehicles in the game. Ships, Carts, Spelljammers, etc. Whether or not you think they were particularly well handled is one thing, but they do exist
Cart with armour and a heavy cross bow/ballista = tank
Let's remember to keep things within the scope of this channel
One of my players im trying to teach saw some stuff on BG3, and wanted to Sorlock (Sorcerer Warlock Multiclass), and I am trying to recommend he doesn’t do so since I don’t think he fully understands the advantages and disadvantages of Multiclassing

yes
This multiclassing discussion is not really a good fit for this channel. Please use #character-discussion or #optimization depending on your intention with your multiclass character.
Go martial its smart.
Teach you the basics of dnd want spice, go paladin or ranger for half casting.
I love martials myself and be creative explain your attacks its part of the fun. Use environment in creative ways work for every class.
Multiclass always has a price, need knowledge first.
While close, BG3's rules and mechanics have some notable differences with D&D's rules and mechanics.

why’s dyno red
Cause that's the color the bot happens to be
To give what I think is a decently informative crash course:
DND is basically, a DM and some players, collaboratively telling a story. The DM plays the part of the world, villains, side characters and extras, monsters, traps, events, ETC, and the Players each play the part of an individual character (think Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, etc - a party of main characters in a story with a lot of side characters)
D&D itself is a rules system. Think of it like a way to keep things consistent and fair, instead of "I hit" "no you didn't" "did too". The rules tell you what you can do, how much you can do it, how often you succeed at stuff, how good your character is, etc. It's a game of character skills.

Spells cost spell slots to cast.
The spell slots are what limits use of them
Spell slots are split into levels like spells
When you cast a spell, you consume a slot of the spell’s level or higher
You regain all slots on a long rest
Ohh
So if you had 2 level 1 slots and 1 level 2 slot, you could cast a level 1 spell twice, and a level 2 spell once. Or you could cast a level 1 spell three times by using the 2nd level slot for the 1st level spell
When you cast a spell with a higher level slot than needed, it’s called “upcasting”, and one some spells it increases the power of it
Oh okay
HI all! Kinda new to DnD and had my first campaign (Finishing tomorrow) and its a 1shot. Was curious if you guys knew where to find groups or DM's to kinda chat with to start a campaign
Check #find-a-game
Thank you !
hello all, I recently got into dnd and have a group of friends, I do have to take the role of a dm but its very overwhelming, what are some ways to start off as a dm while also making a fun developing story? Should i start with a small encounter and build as i go, or should i get right into an elaborate story that they discover progressively. Its pretty overwhelming with all the cool ideas i have i just dont know a good way to start it.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

There is the Archfey Patron for Warlock being the prime example of a fey based subclass.
that works thanks
And Fey Wanderer for Ranger from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Fey wanderer oo
Archfey seems pretty good
Wanderer seems alright
Think ill make an archfey now
Ah i can use my changeling for this warlock
Perfect
Hello, I was wondering if it is ok or suitable for me and my group of friends to first time dnd as me as the DM with no prior experience with the game or if it would be more suitable for us to play with someone else that has experience first?
If it is suitable with no prior experience can someone help teach me the basics of DMing?
You can totally start playing D&D as all newcomers
Go for it, jump right in, feet first!
I have played once before but I have always wanted to DM and I was just wondering if it would be best if i learned more about the game first or jump in as a DM
I just dont really know (other than the books) where to really start as a DM
Jump in
As for where to start, pick up a published adventure
I recommend one of the starter set adventures or Wild Beyond the Witchlight
peril in pine brook free starter with loads of hints tips
It's important to note that Peril in Pinebrook doesn't use full D&D rules
It's actually intended more as a classroom resource type thing for children and young adults
Hey, I was wondering where I could learn how to play dnd? I played one round but did not learn it properly
What do you mean by one round?
As in one round of combat? One combat encounter? One session?
Have a look at the basic rules. They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
One session
Thanks 😊
Perfect thank you ❤️
I think imma look into being more as a player for now until I learn more about DND in general but I will look into Peril in Pinewood as well 😄
Hey folks trying to get my head around things as a new DM.
For skills and abilities.
Am I right in thinking that an e.g. Dex(stealth) check, adds the stealth modifier to the dex roll?
Roll a d20 and add the stealth mod
I also started to learn D&D so I will look in it as well!
It’s very simplified as Davyd said aimed at younger players but it’s got lots of hints and tips in there
Hey! I’m actually also pretty new to DND
todays dnd session i wiped out a pack of wolves with a single spell
Actually, I’m very new because idk anything about finding games or ya-
How do I find sessions and join in?
Hi all. I'm someone that is literally at the point that he knows of D&D and has heard a lot about it, and is now looking to get into it. I plan to read the player handbook shortly. But other than that, what would be some steps you would recoomend to get into it?
Watch YouTube videos some live plays to get a feel for the game, and ask questions here or in other relevant channels
Hey I’m also new and trying to figure everything with DnD
I see. So the same with strength(athletics), roll d20 then add the athletics. Do you not add any base dex/strength modifiers (respectively) either?
Or only with proficiency?
And any advice on finding games or where to play? I've looked into Roll20, but I'm not sure if that's the best place to start, considering I don't really have any IRL friends that would share the same interests.
Skill is ability mod+proficiency if you are proficient in the skill https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/88841772/nJJHDe f we look at my character and say I did an insight check it would be d20+9 or if I did a history check it would be just d20
Appreciated!

Colleagues.
I've been friends with one for 3+years. Simply started with socially drinking, to playing the board game version of dnd, to then following to myself as the DM.
Simply asking someone if they're into nerdy stuff and delving into game examples works.
Alternatively, search for groups in your area. Though that can be daunting to approaching randomers, could ask the owner on the word of local dm groups playing.
Additionally, with Facebook or whatever you can simply put out word if any folk are within x radius of your area of whom may be up for a session.
I am a new dm for a party of 2 of my friends, each of them are at lvl 3,what should be the challenge rating for my next miniboss?
I'd suggest checking with other DMs in #dm-discussion
What do people mean when they say dice jail?
Their dice were bad, kept rolling low numbers, so the player put them in jail.
And started rolling with a different set instead.
A containment mechanism for those cursed dice that always roll 1s. It punishes them for their repeated failures and encourages the rest to try harder.
That was simpler than I thought
Yeah, just a silly bit of fun involving superstitions
Okay so, weird question, what does "Eldritch" mean in D&D?
When I think of an Eldritch Knight, I immediately think of like a Cthulu knight monster, but all it says is that it's a knight who's studied magic
well yeah there's also eldritch bolt
el·dritch
adjective
weird and sinister or ghostly.
"an eldritch screech"

In German prints I believe they use the word for spooky
yeah but are Eldritch Knights inherently creepy or edgy?
or just like smart knights who studied some magic
The latter
so I wonder why it's called that then
Because wotc is bad at naming things

The type of magic isn't really eldritch in any way, at least not with how the word is otherwise used in 5e. Like eldritch blast and eldritch invocations.
Eldritch horror
so it could be like "weird fighter" because they're using magic
it just feels like such a stretch, especially from what eldritch contextually means in most cases
why not like... arcane knight
They already went with arcane trickster... only thing I can suspect
They're "strange" knights in that they use magic to augment their combat ability. Eldritch means strange, uncanny, weird, unknowable
I guess I just have to change how I see the word Eldritch
Does that also apply to eldritch bolt? What is an eldritch bolt in terms of flavor?
It's just a name, plus there's already Arcane Trickster in the PHB
A strange/weird/uncanny/mysterious/spooky bolt
Not to be confused with a blast
Also remember there's a degree of artistic license in naming things, where it's more about how it sounds than what it means
yeah I've seen like... changing the color or other flavorings, which is really cool
which is why it's so awesome
Worth keeping in mind, too, that half of D&D is how you describe things.
You don't have to describe your thing the same way its described in the book.
If you want your Eldrtich Knight to be weird and spooky, go for it.
If you want them to be collected and studious, that's cool, too.
if you roll a nat 20 on stealth check with disadvantage do you roll again?
You always roll two dice when you have disadvantage.
what if you roll 2 N20
If both of those happen to be nat 20s, then you’ve still got a nat 20.
Nat20 doesn't mean anything special for ability skill checks (other than death saving throws).
Then you add your stealth bonus
do you add the lets say +2 stealth bonus on each roll or after you roll your lowest?
Do you know how to roll a stealth check?
There’s no functional difference there. The end result is the same either way.
Do it whichever way makes sense for you.
d20 + Proficiency Bonus (if you're proficient) + appropriate ability modifier
on each roll right?
Yes.
And the lower is the one you use
If advantage, you use the higher
I'm really confused what you're asking tbh because it seems like you understand checks
They’re asking when during the process of disadvantage to add the modifiers.
No, you pick the highest/lowest roll (depending on if it's advantage or disadvantage)
Whether you add it to each of the 2d20 before comparing the totals, or compare the dice as-is and then add the modifiers.
It ultimately doesn’t matter either way.
hmmm okay cool
You get the same total in the end.
It's the same thing either way, whether you add before or after. I don't think there's a single thing that makes a distinction between the two
That's why I was confused.
Okay thanks

Guys, I have a question. If I am a level 2 bard with race Half elf. Do I get 2 cantrips or 3 cantrips?
A level 2 bard has 2 cantrips.
As a level 2 Bard you would normally only get 2 Cantrips, but what kind of Half-Elf are you? Certain subraces of Half-Elf get an extra Cantrip
Yeah I just read that half elf do get an extra cantrip, Ill try to study more exactly which sub race is that.
The standard half-elf doesn't get any additional cantrips.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#HalfElfTraits
Mr. Clouds is correct. Only a few subraces from extra content supplements get alternative features like extra Cantrips
The half-drow gets Dancing Lights at level 1.
The half-high elf can choose a cantrip instead of Elf Weapon Training.
Likewise, the Mark of the Storm Half-Elf from the Eberron manuals gets Gust, if your DM allows content from those books
So if My dm only allows content purely from the players handbook, I cannot use the subrace I assume?
Ill have to ask him tmrrw if I can go ahead and use half High elf because ill get like 3 cantrips😳 if he says yes
But if you're just making a character from the basic rules or players handbook, you won't have that extra Cantrip and instead you'd get more skill Proficiencies as listed in the race. Honestly, simpler is better, and skill Proficiencies are always great!
i wish i could play dnd but i dont have friends to play with nor do i have the equipment, so any tips on how to get started??

Im new to this kinda game
The bot post above has some links you might find helpful.
could someone help me with my character sheet?
Did you read the first four chapters on character creation in the free Basic Rules yet?
yea but im playing as a kenku so idk i cant seem to figure out where to put my skills/senses
Ability skills are ones you typically get from your class and background.
yea but like the kenku race has an aditional +4 deception, +2 perception and+5 on stealth aswell as a passive perception of twelve so im just confused where to apply that
huh?
im doing this on roll20 btw
But kenku doesn't have bonuses like that to ability checks
Hi
Your kenku might, but that should be based on your stats and proficiencies
And filled in accordingly
im just looking in teh monster manual and it says skills: deception +$, perception +2, stealth +5
but so that doesnt apply?
Are you using the charactermancer or are you inputting everything manually?
manually
Looks like you’re looking at a kenku monster stat block and not the kenku playable race

Oh are you building NPC statblocks? Their bonuses are also based on stats and proficiencies but it looks a bit different in format
ah theres a difference i wasnt aware there was already a playable version
You can switch Roll20 to NPC format, but I don't recommend doing that unless you're trying to build monsters
where could one say find the playable race statblock
no i am making a pc guess i just kinda jumped the gun
It's not one of the free options.
If you’re making a player character, I recommend using dnd beyond’s character creator as it’s fairly new player friendly and walks you through the creation process.
But there's a version in Volo's or Monsters of the Multiverse
Playable races don't have statblocks per se
dont have that book :')
Then you may want to look into other options. You can also buy just the single race on D&D Beyond it if you wish
Use the playable races in the free Basic Rules for now. Remember that you still need the DM's okay for certain playable races — they may not have kenku in their campaign setting.
might just ask the dm if i can slightly homebrew this one but still thanks everyone
Ask the DM first if they allow kenku.
ive already done that
Don't homebrew if you're a new player. Just use the kenku race that's provided
The DM should then provide the kenku playable race then.
Monster statblocks =/= playable race
Remember that monster stat blocks are like apples and oranges to player character sheets. As mentioned, your DM might even have access to the Kenku race for you
sofar its been going pretty decent just rerolled the ability scores and hp acording to the dices and the rest are just skills, language and senses but imma check in wwith our dm to see what they think
anyway thanks everybody :D
Hello so im new to dnd i always wanted to start learning to play but i didn't have time to and i still don't but I'll make it work
Anyways can someone tell me what i should learn. I watched some videos on YouTube and i think i get most of it but want i don't get is stuff like how to use status and when players turn to play and ya im just new so i don't know a lot 😐
Have you read the Basic Rules?
Can you explain what you mean by "how to use status"? What status?
Like wisdom
Ah, stats.
Think so
Ya 😅
Each ability has two numbers.
The ability score: a number from 1-20.
And the ability modifier: a number from -5 to +5.
Broadly speaking, your wisdom modifier gets added to certain rolls.
Modifier?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
This table shows the modifier for each possible score:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
But broadly speaking, a modifier is added to a roll to modify the total.
Your DM might ask you to roll a Wisdom saving throw, for example.
So you'd roll a d20 and add your Wisdom modifier.
This section goes into a few of the other ways Wisdom is used:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Wisdom

What's a question you want answered?
Start by reading the free Basic Rules. Help your future DM by knowing the fundamental rules.
Hey fellow newbies.
Hope this is the right place for this post, but I have a build im interested in from a youtube channel but my DM has a different guidelines for creation. If someone is free would you mind messaging me to help me out to try and get the two things molded into one?
You could ask in #character-discussion
thank you!
can someone tell me how to join a game
Depend of what type of game
Read the instructions in #find-a-game if you want to look for one here
If it's on DnD beyond the DM will sens you a link.
what if there is no DM how could i find one
i actually just wanna try the game and see what is it all about
Do you want to play in person or online?
Again, check #find-a-game for online games.
If in person check out your local hobby stores or Facebook D&D pages.
Local Reddit or FB communities are a great way to find in-person games and I highly recommend that
i want online but the find-a-game things isnt working
or im not using it correctly
Read the instructions in #find-a-game carefully. The prompt for the commands is at the bottom of #find-a-game
Oh I didn't know you could submit a form to have DM's also see if you fit their campaign from their view. That is an awesome way to do it. Helps my anxiety and choice paralasys when it comes to finding a group.

Hey all, Papa here!
Been playing DND for the first time, started mid last year and it's as exciting as I expected!
Although, I do tend to min/max I am trying my hardest to not do this by looking ANYTHING up DND related.
That being said, I am very inexperienced and I have a bunch of ideas I wanna do.
My group is also inexperienced so sometimes their advice isn't sound and on point despite the DM being very flexible and fantastic to play with.
I'd just like to have someone with experience I can bounce my thoughts off of, my theories, and be told I can/can't do these things!
Happy rolling gamers!
How do feats work exactly? Is it only when given the choice on lvl up or can u gain feats other ways
If the DM allows them, you may choose them at an ASI instead of +2 ability points
Variant human gets a starting feat.
Yeah, it’s not at every level. Only levels where you’d get an Ability Score Improvement.
Oh okay yeah idk where I heard that feats can be earned aswell
Som groups may have that but it is not an official rule.
Hello all
Well, it is, in https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/other-rewards#Training
Huh. I guess there is an official rule for it - thanks for the correction!
Yeah, it's up to the DM if you get training opportunities but it is a thing there's rules for
yeah it's basically
Replace an ASI with it (requires DM approval)
get it as a reward (training) (requires DM to give)
get it as an epic boon (post-20th-level progression) (requires DM to give)
Are there any games I can join?
Check #find-a-game
how do i makea charecter sheet?
like im really REALLY new to dnd and i learned you have to make one first

The above resources can help you get started!
They include the free basic rules, which have step by step instructions on creating a character, and the handbooker helper series can help. You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Note that you don't need a character before joining a game. In fact it's often better to make one after finding a game.
this really helps thanks
Can I twinned-spell chaos-bolt, and would it be possible for both of them to jump if i somehow rolled all 4 d8s as the same number (or 2 of the same d8s for both), and could i chose the target of the jump to be the target of the other bolt?
#dnd-rules would be the spot for a question like that!
ah, thanks
Me and my friends are just getting into dnd and im dm for now. Something ive come up with my campaign early on is they will stumble upon an ancient artifact with the power of an extremely powerful dragon. After finding this they are confronted with a weakened lich and since they will be incredibly underleved they will need to figure out how to use the orb to knock the lich iut of the fight so they can escape. Is this at all a cool fight or should i honestly just scrap it
I dont know anything really about monster or anything too so that just makes this dm thing alot more stressful lol
This channel is for the basics of D&D. You're talking about how to run an encounter (or if it's a good idea), so #dm-discussion is where to go for that!

Thank you, I have played before but I have set my self “new to dnd” role because I don’t believe I’m experienced enough.
Is there anything in particular you believe you're still inexperienced in?
I think it’s mainly the roles and exploring them in games, I have played 3 games and know how to work around the online website I use however it does get tricky with new races and what not
Can you clarify what you mean by roles?
Can you provide an example of what you mean?
Like clerks, goblins. Both races and classes are difficult to understand, except for the ones I have played (Tieflings, human, bard, Druid)
Alright let's start with races.
What are you having trouble understanding when it comes to playable races?
No tag race found.
I suppose just trying to remember what all the fictional characters do that special and different from each other
I'm not exactly a newcomer but I am new to online DnD
In general, each race will provide an increase to one or more of a character’s ability scores.
Individually, each race will have some abilities that are they provide to character.
For example a Dragonborn will have a breath weapon attack, while a high Elf will be able to get one cantrip of your choice from the wizard spell list.
Okay, that makes a lot more sense, thank you.
hi
Overall, there are alot of different races that you can choose from that stem from different books.
Welcome to the online space. 🙂
I came here because I can't fine a irl place to play dnd
Well you have several options available.
Welcome
Thank you for the help 😊
If you haven't tried this for in person you can:
- Visit tabletop gameshops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
As these tend to host oppotunities to play in person.
thank you, im here mainly, cus i recently started playing, im on my second campaign, and its headed way off track, and my dm is desperately trying to fix things but its genuinly hilarious
As for how to find games in this server specifically for playing online, there are a couple of options:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690
There are more online avenues such as checking out forums on roll20, dndbeyond, and just about any forum for the many other virtual tabletops that are out there.
Glad you're enjoying it at least 😅
Though I might recommend having a session zero just in case.
session zero?
im gonna type out the chaos in the tales from the table tab so you can see what i mean (im sure there are plenty of times when stuff goes really off track)
A session zero is a dnd session that usually occurs before you start a campaign.
It's a unique session in which you can establish a campaign's setting, tone, expectations, boundaries, preferences, scheduling, and many other topics that can help foster a fun and long lasting campaign.
Typically this can prevent a lot of potential issues and pitfalls that some dnd groups find themselves in.
Happy to help.
Is there anything about classes that you are having trouble understanding?
thats the thing tho, our sessions are 4 hours long, and every week on friday, we are a very creative bunch, and one thing led to another and all hell broke loose
our dm also tends to just rewrite the story if needed
No, I’ve think I’ve got them down now.
Hello there, Question here. What do you use the most for online D&D gaming? I am looking to start a campaign online due to lack of interest IRL and am not very talented with technology
Common things that people use to play online are
- Discord, or some other voice call app, for having a group voice chat
- Dndbeyond for helping make a digital character sheet
- A virtual tabletop for having a map
Most games I'm in use DNDB character sheets and either beyond VTT or roll 20 VTT for maps. Oh, and Discord for voice.
Is there a way to do things with hand drawn maps?
For virtual tabletops you have alot of options:
- Roll20
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Fantasy Grounds
- Foundry
- Alchemy RPG
- Talespire
- Dndbeyond also has a vtt in alpha for people in the master tier subscription.
you should be able to import a map into all manner of VTTs
Super thank you!
Hello everyone, I just thought I would give this a shot I was watching some people play d&d and I kind of want to be a part of it and I was just wondering if there's anybody out there who's willing to take in a newbie. I used to play a little bit back in the day but I'm just wondering if anyone's got any open slots for a new player?
like, in owlbear rodeo, it's as simple as uploading an image to a channel (one you can post pictures in)
When it comes to choosing a VTT, it boils down to what you want to do in the vtt.
I really do want to play. I am looking for a late night group because where I sleep during the day but I am a creative writer and I come from a theater background so I just really want to jump on in
You'd use the #find-a-game channels for finding a game - it's off topic to other channels
To find games in this server specifically for playing online, there are a couple of options:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690
hey zero, i put the whole story in tales of the table, let me know if its as insane as i think it is cus idek if we're playing right, i wouldnt know, cus this is happening
I’ve played dnd with ChatGPT a couple of times. It’s so much to take in but such a cool game
Hey I know how to play dnd but have never played I am a player and I am looking for people to play with I play a ranger kenku I can use discord and DND beyond
Check #find-a-game.
The tools used for online games will depend on the individual DMs.
I feel a little stupid but I can't figure out how to submit my post in #find-a-game
Type /looking and click the one you want and hit enter
oh no, I've done that. Its just how do I then submit it once I've filled it out
it should bring up a form to fill out
I have filled the form, I'm just wondering if I have to type any extra commands or do anything so that its posted. Or do I leave it once I've filled it out and wait for it to be posted
You click edit response 1-4 or edit response 5 to fill out the relevant section, then you click submit
ah i didn't and don't see a submit button
can i DM you a screen shot? i think you might understand a little better that way haha
I have no options under the post, but I have filled it out so im guessing it might've bugged?
So yeah it was a bug, I redid one. As i said i have screenshots on hand if needed
Hello, im new here but i want to try playing dnd what should i do first?
i'd look for a game to join, although i'd make sure to let you dm know its your first time. Some Dms wont mind but that way they can break it down for you ^^
dont you have to create a character first or something?
some campaigns ask you too but not all, plus some people like creating characters around the rest of the group or having characters who's stories tie in together which can be a little difficult if you already have established characters. But all n all if you want too i'd say go for it ^^ but its not always a requirement
alright thanks!
ofcourse ^^
Hii I'm.. very new to DND and I'm trying to learn to be a DM for my friends (they're new too.. never played) but I'm super lost with all the things I have to learn :')) could anyone help me out? (Mostly lost on how dices work)

Asking for roleplaying etiquette and norms. Is it normal to describe actions in a first person or third person? Like should i say "I move over to my ally and cast Cure Wounds" or "Growen moves over and casts Cure Wound on his ally"?
I personally feel like it would be easier to say it from a first person perspective as a player.
What’s an easy beginner friendly map maker?
Please @me /dm me if you have suggestions
Check the pinned messages in #dnd-maps
Either way is just fine, this is mentioned in Players Handbook. You can use active or descriptive storytelling. My group uses both. I have noticed that it is easier for new players to use third person.
Super normal either way, go with what you're happy with. Especially when you're doing dialogue, it's perfectly fine to describe the method (Mani flatters them/ bullies them/ lies about something relevant) and let the character's abilities carry it.
Right! Would it be a bad thing swapping between the two styles on the fly, or would that become confusing / annoying?
Not generally an issue that I'm aware of. Do as you like.

Pretty much.
?tag new dice
I think every player I’ve ever gamed with swapped between the two forms, and no one got tripped up by it.
Same for me, but I watched some gp and read some rules
Still dont know how do I play DnD cause 1 Im not native english speaker so I wont understand all words in online game 2 I dont have anything somehow related to the game 3 I dont have any roleplay boardgame club in my small town 4 I dont even have friends, I only got some classmates who think this game is for geeks 😦
@opaque wasp i am trying to get information
Apperently it's something you can buy
And play online with people via discord
No need for real friends
Can you play it online withiut buying?
thats sad
Wdym ?
I though u can play without physical board if online
D&D the tabletop roleplaying game is something that you do need to play with other people as a general rule
They say no you need board
There are video games that are based on D&D, but they're not the same thing. And you don't need a grid, even in person, though many people like to have one
What do I need to buy for my first ever game?
!new
If you live next to me we can split the price of one board and play together @opaque wasp
Question mark I think

Nothing. Read the free basic rules linked above
If you want to buy more options afterwards, you can pick up the books either physically or online
But D&D is neither a board game nor a video game.
I saw 3 books at my local library that's why i got interested
you can start to play dnd for free
but theres paid books as well that give u more options
Free you mean without board ?
you dont need a board
I can just download them for free cant I
You can play dnd without any boards or maps or books, if you want
Not legally
And as we're in the official D&D server, we only talk about legal options
oh of course I wouldnt do that
Not legally, no. And as this is the official dnd discord, I wouldn't advise it
Whatever you do do outside the server, we can't stop. But talking about pirating books here is a good way to get banned/warned
You just describe what's happening and roll some dice
There's the free beginner rules they have on the website, dnd beyond has free access to build characters on, and you can use imagination to tell where things are in combat if you don't wanna draw a map
So i think this game will make me better at imagining
And being creative
Dnd definitely can help that, yep!
Because i am trying to be artistic as well ( my job is programmer )
I think this game is great
Do you guys stream here a match ?
So what do people need help with
I want someone to play in front of me
This discord doesn't host the games, but people recruit players and have their own discord or roll20 or any number of ways they play the game if you look over in #looking-for-players
Find youtube videos
You can also look at plenty of YouTube videos of people playing, a really good way to see if you like the feel of how people play
Don’t know if this is the best place just wanted the best section to ask to get help with making a custom race on beyond ? Character discussion ?
Don’t wanna post in the wrong place
#homebrew or #ddb-support depending on how technical your question is
Thanks!
How would I roll for an alchemy check of some kind? Maybe just like a wisdom roll?
The DM would ask you to make a skill check with Alchemist's Supplies. You would add your Proficiency Bonus to the appropriate ability check
https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/alchemists-supplies
Thank you a lot!
Well, you’d add your proficiency bonus if you’re proficient with alchemist’s supplies.
Yo, I’d like a lil clarification, so in y’all’s mind what are the differences between how a character with very high intelligence with very low wisdom would have interactions vs a character with very high wisdom and very low intelligence
Ability Stats With Tomato
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
High Intel with Low Wis would know lot of facts, but otherwise be quite simple-minded in social interactions.
High wis with low Intel would know very little facts, but be quite witty and keen.
hellooooo, I'm brand new to d&d can anyone help me getting started with this

But did you have any specific questions?
Hey, thanks!
I don't have any, no. I've only played one session ever a few years ago but my "friends" at the time ruined kt
Oof that's rough
My buddy created a really interesting story and the other people other than me and one girl just left the table and started playing video games instead
Well that’s a shame.
Yes, it is. One day I'll hopefully find the time and friends to have a full campaign
Same

Yeah I figured lol, I appreciate it

My younger brother used to host in our basement so I know how most of it goes
But not smaller details

He was a really good DM, actually made a Pokemon one once
Hello I am rather new here but I am going to my first IRL D&D event next week so I need all the help I could get
So ye
What do you need help with
Ooo awesome, good luck!

This bot post has some links to stuff that might be beneficial
Ye but um what if I want non cannon stuff to make in my character sheet?
Because I got many ideas for non cannon D&D stuff so ye
What does non canon mean
There's no main game
There's just a few rules and guidelines you follow to make a story together with your table
hey yall is this a server to play d&d I’ve been wanting to get into it for a while but I don’t have anyone local to play with
We don't play dnd in the server but we talk about Dnd and there's opportunities to find games here
Though #find-a-game
Well something other then your usual evles and humans and other fantasy race and magic
Liek I came from elden ring I liek dat coming from dat there is all sorts of ideas I could do
Though as a beginner it's usually not recommended to stray to far from the base game
As in, a race that isn’t official?
You can generally achieve something like that by just reflavouring an existing race (i.e., describing it differently whilst keeping the mechanics the same)
There's tabaxi which is a cat I suppose or you can just pick any other race and say it's a kitsune
You’re gonna have to be more specific about exactly what you want. There’s a lot more races in dnd than just elves and humans
-w- you think I would be happy with dat? No I want to be a humanoid fox with nine tails.
Well just say you are
Yeah
Same and I'm new may I get help learning how to play and find a party
I always found the whole appeal of D&D to be the amount of freedom so I think MOST things you want to do, you can do.

Hey I got a question Im making my first character and idk how the points for wisdom char etc work
?tag new abilities
If you don’t have a DM, you’re making a character for practice, really. Standard array is a good choice for getting through character creation as rolling isn’t accepted at all tables.
Making characters for practice can be a good way to familiarize yourself with character creation though
And can help you have backup characters ready for if your character dies
I used to have friends in my school that did dnd but I didnt know crap so when I hraduate i go tot he same school theyre going and I can be familiarized
Practicing making characters and such is how I personally learned and became familiar with how the game works
The Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters) lead you through the process.
Welp time to fill the paper up
So um I need help figuring out a class. I am a noob, so I need a easy to play class basically. Thank you.
Fighter will be the easiest
Well, from what I understand, none of this is, quote unqote, "easy"
I would ask yourself first, what would you want to play as? And go from there
Ignore what ThePixelatedCat said and pretend I said it instead
Fighter, rogue, barbarian, and monk will all be pretty easy
Fighter easiest, then barbarian, then rogue, then monk in my opinion
Druid and Wizard are the hardest
Sorcerer, Bard, and Warlock you can very easily get stuck with bad spell choices
ranger and paladin can be only marginally harder than say, monk
Oh thank god I chose a not too terribly hard class then
Its because of the armour im guessing. It is, I bet.
Huh?
Paladin
What makes a class harder or not is just number of options
^.^
Paladin you can get away with just whack enemy
Is anybody looking for a player in their game?
The more words you have to read, the harder the class is.
Thats... huh I never thought of it that way
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
that makes... a ton of sense actually
But that’s why spellcasters are inherently more complex: you gotta also read the spellcasting rules and all the spells.
And choose what spells you want to take and what spells you want to use when
If you play a martial class, that’s two whole chapters you can just totally skip.
What do you mean I cant just fireball every problem i come across
Lol
When I get into a Paladin proper, and look into Spellcasting, its gonna throw me for a loop
Conversely, the absolute simplest choice is a human champion fighter.
Very little to read, because it’s all just static bonuses.
literally. At first, I looked at the Human page, and simply said "thats it?"
if I recall, for the "basics", it sjust "add 1 to ability scores" and "choos eone other language you know" and thats it.
How should I format my character sheets into words for character discussion?I want to check if people have suggestions for the character which I recreated(with liberties).
If it’s an online character sheet, you could just share a link to the sheet itself.
If it’s a physical one, you could take a picture and share a link to that.
I don't have a link rn,I'm doing this on phone so all I have is a download
The important parts would be:
- Race
- Class
- Background
- Any choices made within the above items (fighting styles, spells, etc.)
- Ability Scores
Also level?
Yeah, probably
Especially if you’re starting at a higher level.
Or if you’re multiclassed.
what does table top mean i keep on seeing it in the requirments
Well I'm going to keep the un-simplified character sheet just in case, but I'll make a simplified less unruly version of the character sheet
Means physical dice and stuff(?)
Table top literally means the top of a table. 😅
Oh,nvm
So a tabletop RPG is one (traditionally) played while gathered around a table with your friends.
What “requirements” are you referring to, though?
That's why DND is split into 2 categories most of the time I hear people talk about it,online(cheap) and in real life(expensive if you are going all out)
I don’t think I quite agree with that.
Perhaps they mean virtual table top?
You could spend as much or as little as you like no matter where you play.
Yeah, you don’t need to spend any money to start playing dnd . Whether online or in person.
Real life can be done with some sheets, dice, and a notepad
Yeah but not everyone has a d100 or d4 irl
Still money is money
can use online dice rollers
That too,
Yep digital dice are free.
But sometimes it feels like online dice rollers have it out for you (my experience)
you really just need some paper, pencils, and some character sheets printed
Folks with real dice feel the same way.
humans cannot comprehend true randomness so we see weird patterns and other things
I don’t know, dice jail is a thing
Yeah but I get better rolls on a physical for some reasons
I have to roll 13-16 times in a row for a 20 but if I where to do the same thing with a normal dice it feels like 3-5 times to get a 20
Plus unless you salt test your dice, some dice may not be truly random.
Sorry but I was flabbergasted for a fat 3 seconds, what on god's green earth is a salt test???
Do you just rub salt on the die?
Salt water in a cup and spin the dice and record the outcomes to determine fair dice.
Though we are getting out of scope of #dnd-newcomers
Never knew that ah-salting your dice was a thing you actually do
Bringing it back to newcomers scope, you don’t need to spend money to start playing dnd .
Of course not but to have a more authentic feel it's recommended to do it irl with a group with actual dice
You can use free basic rules, character sheets, and dice rollers online
even that is really cheap anyways
(From my experience)
Folks can play differently. There’s no gatekeeping here in terms of what’s more or less authentic.
dice sets can be found at like, general stores
there's a video of a guy who buys stuff at a dollar store to make a DnD setting, it's pretty popular
just gotta get crafty
Of course not but in my limited experience it feels better with real dice
Yep, just found 7 dice set at GameStop for $00.68 USD
yeah, and you don't even have to be at a gaming store either
you can find them in toys section of dollar stores
I mean, D&D is just a skeleton of rules to play make-believe in
it's really accessible
I have never seen anything but a d6 in any non specialised shops in the Netherlands or UK
Try bookstores
I can't believe that Dungeon and Dragon turn 50 this year.
Wouldn't you believe it?
I know nun about dnd I just like the elder scrolls and this looks like the board game version of them on one level Ig
would love to learn more tho

sound amazing and interesting btw, i haven't play it before, nor any communicate. i hope this board game can help me communicate better and experience my story as well. ( WARNING! my project is a secret.)
Despite being a tabletop game, it doesn’t necessarily involve a board.
But it can help develop a number of skills!
it's a roleplaying game, basically a childhood make-believe but with a skeleton of rules to help settle disputes about what would/wouldn't happen
Is this channel for new dnd players?
YES
It is!
Ok
aight thanks
so, basically, you don't need much besides your imagination, some way to keep track of stuff, and the basic rules
I wanna try a the whole dnd thing
it's a very... open sort of game
the #find-a-game channels exist - it's off-topic elsewhere :P
Make a post in #looking-for-players. Requests like those outside of the LFG channels are against the rules.
basic rules huh?
yup, the basic rules of DnD are available for free
basically the skeleton I mentioned
so you just need those, some way to keep track of stuff, dice, and your imagination

one the introduction complete where can i find a group #find-a-game
you'd use #find-a-game , the channel you just linked to
And don't worry about knowing every rule perfectly... I'd just get a gist of it, and your fellow players and DM should be fine helping you clear up minor things
What are the most important rules to remember?
yeah, you don't need to memorize everything, just remember that 'a rule for that exists somewhere' so you can find it
