Well there isn't a specific game and none are hosted on the server. If you're looking for a game to join, there's instructions over on #find-a-game to find games posted here 😎
Dnd isn't something that just start at a moment's notice unfortunately 😅
Though it would be nice if that were the case.
To clarify D&D is a social tabletop game that takes time to prepare.
From having a DM prepare an adventure, either through an already written adventure book or an adventure of their own creation, to gathering players and having them create characters.
It all a process.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The bot post above has everything you need to get started.
I also recommend giving the intro demo a try.
Okay
just went to my first session and went into death saves 4x
The big encounter was 6 orcs, 2 cannons, 3 spiders, and there were 5 (lvl 3) of us
and once they were all were killed 1 animated armor came out
2x during a fight because i kept sleeping almost every enemy and 2x just as a gag because I was at 1 hit point (i got slapped)
also cannons are crazy
is there any way i could find some onltine dnd groups
to help me learn and play with

Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
The above links and resources can help out there!
Online play is definitely a popular way to play, so there are a lot of options to pick how to play online and a lot of places to look for groups to play online with.
You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game on how to post in the LFG (looking for group) channels here, or check out other places too- r/lfg on reddit, Roll20's LFG, other discords so on.
I’ve seen this acronym quite a few times, but I’ve never known what it meant. What does LFG mean?
Looking for group
Thanks!
Ah okay thank you!
hello, I'm new here, i've been looking to play D&D for a while and a certain game made me step out of my closet, and i discovered that i'm somewhat imaginative.
i have many questions xd
We might have some answers 😛
so, apart from bg3, wich i heard is in some cases different from D&D, i have no idea where to play and if there is a platform to play the game, i only knew D&D as a table game
?tag new online
oh i see, i thought the channel only teached how to play the game
So for online play you can use VTTs (Virtual Table Tops) like Roll20 or Foundry, that will have maps, tokens, digital sheets and so on that you can use, or you can play a little more basically, with things like owlbear rodeo that handle maps and some tokens, or even using Discord to chat and a dicebot to roll digital dice and no maps or some mix of them all. Depends a lot on your style of play too.
it's so cool that the discord has a dice roll bot, i was wondering about if it did
It's only for people to learn how it works using #ddb-avrae-help and #ddb-avrae-commands
It's not for general use
For that, you should add it to your own server
that's a shame, i was thinking to use persuasion and roll the dice bot to see if i could get anymore informations xd but it's fine, i'll check out the appropriate channels
anyway, thanks
We don't allow roleplaying in this server. Unless you mean getting more information about playing D&D, in which case no dice rolls are needed
i understand
I have 2 spell slots
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid#TheDruidTable
HAve a look again
Take another look at the table.
Lvl 6 Druid has 4 1st 3 2nd and 3 3rd slots
Find level six, then go across. At the top of the table on the right hand side it says **—Spell Slots per Spell Level— **and then the level of the slots.
In the row for 6th level it tells you how many you have of each spell level.
Yeah so I am gonna need to switch round some invocations
But take another look at what Warlock gets at 6th level
So it's 2 slots, but remember warlocks are pact magic casters that work different.
They're always max level you can cast (so 2 x 3rd level slots) and you get them all back on a short rest.
So from my understanding I can use let’s say eldrich blast twice and then have to short rest to use magic again
Eldritch Blast is a cantrip and doesn't use a slot
Cantrips can be cast unlimited times.
💀 not broken at all
Eldritch Blast is not too broken imo
That's not broken in the slightest; cantrips are designed and balanced around being fallbacks when you're out of slots. That's why some get more powerful with character level, because you can't use spell slots to power them up like you can with levelled spells
Warlocks are really intended to act like 'full casters' like wizards, who are casting different spells all the time.
Think of Warlocks like arcane fighters. Instead of swinging their sword or shooting thier bow multiple times, they fire off Eldritch Blast. Eldritch Blast is their main bread and butter attack, like a melee fighter's is swinging their weapon.
Their spells are extra on top- powerful, but limited supply.
But Eldritch Blast is intended to work much like a Fighter's attack.
You can use invocations to add modifier to damage, like a weapon attack does.
You get extra blasts as you level, like a fighter gets extra attacks.
Yo… what is a good cantrip for a level 6 warlock
Besides Eldritch Blast? perhaps go for one that targets a save to deal damage, incase an enemy has too high AC for Eldritch Blast to hit, and then pick out some fun ones for RP and utility like Prestigidation or mage hand?
More a #character-discussion question
hello. it's enough if, as beginner, i start only the nbooks, player's handbook, dungeon master's guide and monster manual?
Yes. more than enough
Dont quote me on this, but if you are just starting, and as a player, I think the Players Handbook is really all you need
Amen.
(I picked up the Dungeon masters guide solely for the Oathbreaker stuff ^.^)
really? i thought that i really need these 3 books first. especially since i see them on bundles usually
One see's them in bundles because of Dungeon masters themselves, and convience.
All 3 ar enot required at all.
i see. thanks man
also, i just noticed that the books are kinda expensive. i mean just handbook is 30 euros.
yuuuuuuuuup
couldn't they make them cheaper?
Hi
Probably. But this is a business we are talking about. Profits are their first concern.
Goodday Luck
Goodday to you too
That is the cost of similar TTRPG books elsewhere as well. The art and production and the fact a group can share a book between them can push prices up to be profitable.
They can be expensive though, so feel you. The basic rules though are enough to play by, and you can always purchase individual classes/races/spells so on digitally on Dndbeyond.
Helps try and cut down the cost of the hobby so it doesn't get too high.
Let’s get things back on topic please. This channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started and not economic theories or pricing of books. Thanks!
What was going on anyway?
Before this, really just talking about how to get started in the hobby and what books or not are needed.
Ah alright.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
then why i heard people who say that i need to buy dungeon master's guide and monster manual too?
Are you looking to be a DM or a player?
depends. in some games, i want to be dm when in other times a player
Well, if you want to be a DM in DnD, then yes, you probably should have all 3
i see. thanks
So to explain what you'll get in them so you can make an informed purchase:
-
The Player's Handbook has all the rules needed to play, and the 'core' race and class options. There are more options than what is in the basic rules which only give one version (subclass) of each class and one subtype of each race. The PHB has far more options which makes it great for players who know of those options and wanted those.
-
Monster Manual has all the monster lore and stats, and has more options than what you can get free from D&Dbeyond. But you can do pretty well with using just the free monsters.
-
The Dungeon Master's Guide is more for when you want the optional rules and rules on how to make your own world, games and story without using a prewritten adventure. Has some pretty good extra rules in it, but out of the core three books, this is the one most players hold off on buying until they think they really want it. It also has the magic items and art in it, but most of those you can find in the free resources on dndbeyond.
We will also be getting 'revised' versions of these corebooks sometime this year (we hope), so might be worth waiting for a while before purchasing them unless you'd like to have both the 2014 version of the rules and the 2024 version.
What book has the most recent/updated version of the playable goblin race?
Which is why the Player's Handbook is usually the most recommended one to get. The other two are great, but not as 'necessary' or expansive to have for newer players.
Beyond that, 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything' and 'Tasha's Cauldron of Everything' also really expand spells, items, classes and rules. Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse expands monsters and player race options. But treat them like 'DLC'. You don't need them and shouldn't feel pressured to buy them at the start, but they are pretty great expansions to have.
Mordenkainen Present's Monsters of the Multiverse for that one.
thank you
Is there any community who play D&D on TTS? I would like to join that one.
edition 5.5?
It's being called that by some in the community, but it's not really a new edition, more just revised rules.
Stop spamming every channel people have shown you where to look
Yeah but it's hard to find it, also I am kinda confused about all of this since I am new here..
Did you click #looking-for-community ?
i see. i hope they will launch soon so i will start playing
Yes, most of them only offer on roll20.. it's hard to find anyone that would host it on TTS.
You can always start before! As mentioned the free basic rules has everything you actually need to play. So you can try with those, and learn what you like and what else you might want.
Txt to speech ?
Table Top Simulator
No, on Tabletop similator.
Also worth looking on the Table Top Simulator discords or even the boardgame discords
Both should have spaces to look for groups to play games on TTS, including possible D&D groups
thanks
So you saying I will not find anyone here that host a game from TTS?
You might, but you might also have more luck on a discord specifically for TTS if that is one of your main requirements for a game.
You could always use the search function here to search for TTS /table top simulator in the Looking-for-X channels.
How do I post like an topic here that someone would respound on me if they host or not?
You need to post in #750812887697588356 following the rules in #find-a-game
Type /looking click looking for dm and submit a post
But note that restricting yourself to TTS might limit your responses, but if that is a main requirement for you, then add that into your post.
Yeah I am confused how to use that..
Read #find-a-game carefully
I already made post but I think it said I have to wait 8 days
Then you must wait I’m afraid
Ok, thanks I guess..
What are some things to learn before starting?
Character creation, what your character can do on its turn, how to RP in situations
How to be a team player
Hello
Hey, Im very new to DnD and im planning to get the set with the dm, player and monster books, and the DM screen! I already have a group of friends who I can play with (I will be the DM) , so, what do I need to get prepared for probably a first campaign ? (And which campaign is the best to newcomers ?)
Thx!
Lost Mines of Phandelvar is considered pretty new-player friendly. Stormwreck Isles would also be another one.
Best thing to do is read through the adventure and get familiar with the storyline, major NPCs and enemies, and pacing of the adventure. Take some personal notes.
Then make sure to read and prep the section of the adventure module you'll be running at least the week of the game session.
You can get more suggestions and help with DM'ing in #dm-discussion
Hay I want to play a game around war-hammer-40K in DND can someone help me out
Look in the Looking For Game channels for any D&D games that are WH40k-inspired. Please note that this is the official D&D server and anything not-D&D should be discussed in #non-dnd-topics or ideally in a different server that is more aligned with not-D&D topics.
Sorry
hi
hello
is there a guide somewhere for completely new players?
idk i tried reading ebery book and they make no sence to m so i turned to the last plae i could think of which was here and i havnt see anything
yikes
yh ik its been a long week
There's some handy links here to get you started:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask.
i cant make sence of the books
is there anything else i can do to understand the game
Is counterspell always used as a reaction?
Yes, because of its casting time.
Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell
What's one specific thing in the book you can't make sense of, to start?
If you'd prefer a video explanation, Handbooker Helper is pretty popular:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
So would like an eldtitch blast via cantrip be insta counter spelled?
like ive tried to read it but i forget it then it doesnt make sence and no matter the way i look its hurting my head
If an enemy choose to use their reaction (and a spell slot) to counter it, sure.
Not every enemy even can cast counterspell.
thanks!
And the enemies that can might choose to save their reaction or their spell slot for something else.
Yes ik im using a mage cr 6 enemy who has counter spell
Then yeah, they could use it if they choose.
I've always wanted to try and play DnD but it's so scary to get to know it at first glance
Bear in mind that once a creature has taken a reaction, they can't take another until the start of their next turn.
It's a lot to take in. 😅
You definitely don't need to know everything to start playing.
Most of it you'll learn best while you're playing.
But my general advice would be to focus on learning what rules are where, to start.
Then you can always look them up as needed.
Okok thanks for the advice
A lot of people prefer video explanations as well, like the Handbooker Helper series linked above.
Ohh that would help a lot actually
But if you've got any specific questions -- like "How often can I use counterspell?" -- the folks here are happy to answer them.
Def gonna watch the vid rn
Videos have more retention than most books i would say
Yea I cannot focus on something if it's written and I have to read it, my ADHD don't allow me
At a bare minimum, I’d recommend learning:
- these common terms
- what to do on your turn
- how your character’s own abilities work
Do y'all watch "Roll for Sandwich" on tiktok? That's basically how I got the courage to try and play
roll for sandwitch is so fun
Hey everyone! Ive started a few months ago with a couple of friends our first campaign. We would like to get a little more serious and to get more into that roleplay. Im planning to get dressed as my new character so i want to "craft" a cosplay. Ive searched on etsy and other websites for some stuff and found some cool things i would like to buy, but I didnt quite found everything Ive thought off or it was to expensive. Long story short i would like to know, if anyone knows a good shop, store or website that sells materials, objects, Clothes and decorations. Ofcause the store/website/etc. dont need to sell all those things at once. (It would be best if the stores were located in Europe or Germany. Shipping costs are expensive lol)
Maybe check with folks in #dnd-arts-and-crafts and #merch-and-dice - they may have some suggestions and ideas regarding places to get cosplay materials.
I will do that. Thanks!

Hello
Hello, new folks. Welcome to the server. Do check out the channel's pinned messages if you haven't yet; they contain handy resources for getting started with the game!
Hi, my name's Matt and im very new to DnD. I played once a long time ago but havent found a good dm or group to play with since. I have a small group of local friends that are interested but never played before. So, Ideally id like to find a group to play in where the DM is willing to teach ME how to dm. Is there anybody that would be interested in including me in their campaign, or can point me in the right direction?

The past few bot posts are what you'd find there.
Not really it's just been a few years
That was a command to get the bot to post, that's all.
So when i post in looking for a dm do i just basically say what i said above?
That and whatever other info the form asks of you.
Ok. Thanks again.
You can make the character before
But it’s best to discuss the lore with the dm
So that they can approve it

☝️rules video guides free stuff to get you started
Depends on the setting of your campaign
just pick whatever language you want on your character
there isn’t an “optimal language”
Consult with your DM which languages may be appropriate for their campaign setting.
i dont think hes in a group
hes just making a character
Other character options can be used/accessed when you buy the books they are in. Only the SRD materials (found in the free basic rules) are available for free. That said, you can start playing with just the free basic rules.
Consider the other books/options a bit like DLC content
Each class only has 1 subclass available for free via the basic rules. Other subclasses are unlocked when you purchase them individually or when you purchase the book that subclass was published in. D&D Beyond does also have content sharing though, so if you are in a campaign with someone who has a Master Tier subscription, you can use all of the content that anyone in that campaign has purchased, but for that campaign only
Do keep in mind that the subscription does not unlock anything in and of itself. It just allows you to share content with other people in your campaign
Ranger has martial and caster features
Rangers are typically flavored as an explorer or scout of some kind. They have access to both magic and weaponry, and typically fight using their dexterity, so archery and finesse melee weapons are commonly use
Sorcerers are innately gifted with magic.
Wizards learn magic through study.
You have to go to wizard uni before you can be a wizard. It's a ten year course of study.
Ignore that
Though wizards can be a complex to learn.
This is #dnd-newcomers so we try to help people not joke around and confuse things
Do note that wizards have separate rules for:
- Determining how many spells are in your spell book.
- How many spell slots you have
- How many spells you can prepare for the day from your spell book
What are some good things to think about when youre first getting into it all? Me and a friend of mine are looking to try out DnD for the first time, but its a bit daunting.

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Take your time to learn the mechanics and understand that you don’t have to have every rule memorized.
When you encounter a scenario where no one knows the rule, have the DM make a judgment call they believe is fair and keep the game going.
After the session, just look up the official rule so you know moving forward.
Thank you so much!
I also recommend talking about boundaries, also known as lines and veils, to be ensure everyone has a safe and comfortable experience.
STEM science tech etc etc??

Though I also recommend starting with D&D's official community campaign as those are played rules as written.

hi looking to find a game im new and do know but just wanna find a game to pllay anbd learn on the fly
Me too
been watching a few yt videos on it so i know a little
First off
Tell your dm you are new they will build the game with you in mind.Second make sure your d and d game you join is beginner friendly.Avoid homebrew for at least 6months in my experience ends up harming you long term

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
There are many DMs who are friendly to new players BUT you have to do your share by learning the rules. If you are constantly asking the DM question about the fundamentals you are forcing them to pause the game and inconvincing the other players. DMs are very busy people, help them by knowing how the game works.
There are no free PDFs except for the Basic Rules.
That's piracy and against the [rules](#1133105265311490159 message).
Okay, what does this have to do with helping new players?
new dm's struggle with finding maps after all its good to know that here is a link to some maps
Go to #dnd-maps or #dm-discussion
my b og
This channel is to help new players.
If you're trying to find a more budget friendly approach, your best bet would be to just buy the content you want instead of buying the entire book.
Individual races subclass etc can be purchased for 1.99
If you have the physical copies you can recreate them with the homebrew tools
This channel is for specific questions, but there are materials pinned to help get started

struggling with finding a campaign that doesn’t really require vc are those a thing ?
still new so idk if its just a general requirement
Same!!
I think it’s a thing you can filter for or search for on Roll20 if you go to find a game! There should be descriptions in there that the DM I would think would say if it’s a VC or just text campaign!
Keep looking.
VC is just convenient for a lot of DMs because looking at chat requires attention away from their notes.
Look for PBP (play by post) games. Those games are much slower since they're not played realtime.
As far as I know anyway I could definitely be wrong, I think VC is the majority but there’s for sure just text games out there!
Does anyone run campaigns online or through the DnD app???
Many people do- if looking for an online game best check out #find-a-game
Playing D&D online is common these days, ever since the pandemic.
Makes sense
Follow the instructions there to find out how to post in #750812887697588356 and how to reply to posts in #looking-for-players .
It was even pretty popular before the pandemic.
hello i'm a new dm preparing for my first campaign nice to meet everyone!
Heya! There is #dm-discussion for general DMing advice and questions if you want it, and if running a prewritten adventure you could check out #1029833015423143957 and search the threads for the one you're running to see if there is an in advice in there useful to you, or to ask questions about the adventure yourself.

I especially recommend the Hanbooker Helper series as they have short videos under 3 mins that can help learn about the different classes.
For a bit more extensive video, I also recommend the video titled: "What class should you play in D&D? | A Tutorial for all players" on youtube.
You can also tell me your preferred playstyle and I can make some recommendations based on that.
Thank you so much! I'll do that! I appreciate it!
I do not know for sure if i am allowed to, but can i repost my “looking for a DM” listing when i have made the errors in the form?
Put corrections in the thread under your ad

Got it, thank you for the advice! I’ll get the edits in the thread!
Hello
Welcome!
In what regards?
I'd look at what fictional characters you've really enjoyed in the past and take inspiration from them. Anything come to mind?

Not really well maybe I just like doing my own style
Where should I start first

Agreed with Zero.
First things first. Make a character
I wish timezones didnt exist and age wasnt real either that'd make finding a game so much easier
A good strategy is to worry less about timezones and more about aligned schedules. If someone wants to game in the middle of the night their time and it's your afternoon, you can play together!
Yeah ig but i gotta find someone first
Of course. What I mean is don't immediately rule out folks in other timezones.
Often times, it's how you try to find people that makes the difference.
I mean it would also have to change for the rest of the group
But theres always a chance
Could i look for both players and a dungeon master?
Make my own group that way
Potentially yes.
For finding a group there are some methods that can work fairly well.
For in person, the recommendation is to check your school club, local library, game shop, and convention as those can often host dnd games and events.
For online, you can participate in community campaigns.
You can use that as opportunity meet different people to recruit for a campaign group.
I"ve tried that but theres absolutely nothing nearby for dnd where i live
The closest thing is a game shop a 2 hour drive away
Additionally when you make posts for looking for DM or responding to posts by others, you can give details to highlight what aspects of dnd that you enjoy along with your playstyle.
Mentioning what aspects of roleplaying, exploration, combat, campaign tone, and settings can paint a more vivid picture of what type of player you are.
Have you considered starting with D&D adventures league?
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 Has some posts looking for AL one shots that span the entire month of February.
I have not but now I definetly will
I've played 2 oneshots before wich were fun
Kinda looking for longer playtroughs but oneshots can be fun too
The more you play one shots, the more opportunities you'll have to meet people who play dnd that match your preferences and availability.
Just remember there are guidelines you must follow to create an AL compatible character.
The AL player guide can be found here: https://dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

How do i I play dnd
Check the pinned messages in this channel. Those resources should help.
The brief version: learn the rules. Find a group. If you’re a player, work with your DM to make a character. If you’re the DM, work with players to devise an adventure.
You roll a dice

hii!! so ive been wanting to play dnd for so long now hehe but I just took the initiative to try and get into it and I’m lowkey lost on everything how do I even begin (I already made a character) (I hope i did it right at least)
The steps:
- Review the rules (at least to get the gist). Knowing how to make a character is especially valuable.
- Find a group.
- Work out expectations, a schedule, etc.
- Play.
If you want to be sure you made your practice character right, head to #character-discussion!
Is 8 people in a first timer group too much? We have two DMs though to collaborate and alternate roles
Aka 6 players, 2 semi-players
I suspect many experienced players would probably recommend breaking them up into two groups of four.
If the 8 includes the DMs, it might be workable. But smaller groups still tend to be a bit easier to manage
7 players is my hard limit as a DM but I prefer 4-6
I did a DM for another ttrpg, one similar to DnD, and found that 6 players was a freaking lot
I have quite a bit but only 3 show up out of 7

Hello, I'm newbie and me and my husband are both learning the game. Also any tips we currently have the player handbook and the essentials kit
Take your time learning the rules.
Meet with your ground beforehand and discuss ground rules in addition to expectations everyone has.

hey guys, I'm completely new to the DnD world as I have zero experience playing it, and have come just to ask a few questions about character creation(just for character creation cause I'm not planing to play any game rn)
can we create characters whose race is demon
There's no such official game option, the "closest" (but not really that close) is the tiefling option; people who have fiendish (devil) heritage
oh well, but what is fiendish heritage
devilish heritage
It varies depending on where your game is set, but generally tieflings can trace their ancestry back either to a devil, or someone who made a deal with a devil
ooh
btw I was making a character in DnD Beyond
and there was an option about Encumbrance Type
what that??
Encumbrance is the mechanc by which the weight of your stuff is tracked and how it affects your character
There are two versions of the rule, standard and optional variant
It'll be down to your DM to decide which version, if any, is being used (it's not uncommon for DMs to not worry about encumbrance)
Can i use mage hand to steal from a bag of holding?
You can use the hand to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour the contents out of a vial.
Bag of holding:
Retrieving an item from the bag requires an action.
I'd say so yes, although debatable whether the hand needs two actions to open and then retrieve an item. Discussions like this can be had in #dnd-rules to work out how 'RAW' (rules as written) interact.
Hello im new here can we play online session in here?
Not here, no. This is a discussion server

Creating my first character, what do the black dots next to me saving throws mean?
also how do I calculate proficiency bonus and perception?
The black dot means you're proficient in that savve
Proficiency is based on your characters level and will be listed in your class table
Perception is your wisdom modifier + your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in perception
does the same apply for the black dots in Skills?
Yep, that means you're proficient in that skill
That's currency; copper pieces, silver pieces, electrum pieces, gold pieces, and platinum pieces
You put whatever currency you have from your background there, and whatever you earn over the course of the campaign
Thanks. also, do i add any numbers to the other skills if i am not proficient or leave them blank?
Up to you. They list the ability scores used, but you can if you like.
and for example if i had Deception, I get +2 from warlock and i have a +5 charisma modifier so i make that a 7?
That's right.
and the ones im not proficient in have the same treatment just without the class proficieny bonus?
I have to ask but do you have a charisma of 20?
Ok did your DM see the rolls
i sent a video yeah
Sorry had to ask a lot of new players Roll stats and get attached to them only to find the DM won’t allow them
if they are too overpowered we will change to points system or something
If the DM has seen the rolls and says they are fine youre good to go
I've never played D&D before but I'd love learning to! What would be the best way to learn?

#750812887697588356 Find a DM that's open to teaching new players. Learning on your own is good but finding a good DM to teach you is always helpful.
Hey, everybody! Brand new player, here… thought I’d stop by and say hi.
welcome
Hi 😄
So what do we do here?
Here being this channel specifically? Or the server in general?
Both, I guess… The only other discord I’m in is one that’s dedicated to fangirling over Michael Sheen ha ha
Uh, ok
Well this channel specifically is, as the channel description says, for asking questions and generally getting help with the basics of D&D
The server in general is a discussion server where people talking about D&D. We have various channels that cover specific aspects of D&D, such as the rules ( #dnd-rules ), playing as a Dungeon Master ( #dm-discussion ), making your character ( #character-discussion ) or just talking about D&D in general on topics that don't fit into a specific channel ( #dnd-discussion )
Sorry, I meant do you guys talk more about the video games or the table top game?
Got it. Thanks 🙂
This server is dedicated to the tabletop roleplaying game
We have one channel for #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers, but otherwise channels are generally for discussing the tabletop D&D experience
how do I know what DC sum should be?
do I pull out a mental RNG machine and define it myself?
As a player or as a DM?
As a player, it'll be defined by your class and ability scores. For example, as a wizard your spellsave DC will be 8 + your proficiency bonus + your intelligence modifier
As a DM, you decide it based on how hard you want the challenge to be, 5 is considered (to the average person) to be very easy and 30 is considered nearly impossible (again, to the average person)
I bought the PHB and then did some research online. It’s wild how much better the ranger is with the supplementary materials lol.
Haven’t played a campaign yet but looking into creating a ranger
Hello 👋 I'm new to D&D and I was looking around to understand what should I do to join this world, thought about making a character for fun and also to be ready when I'll actually play but one of the first thing I see is a bunch of "sources" to able or disable, should I able them all to have a bigger range of choice to make my character or should I wait to make it because if I use something from a source it might stop me from joining some campaigns which don't allow that source in particular? Or every or those sources can be played in any campaign? Ty
If this is on dndbeyond, really the only source you need activated that you'll have for free it the basic rule. Things like 'Eberron content' or 'Forgotten Realms content' won't mean or do much for you without actually having access to content beyond the basic rules.
I'd turn off homebrew content for now.
ty very much

As someone looking to get into playing, does it pay to pick up the current Players Handbook if it sounds like there will be a new edition coming out later in the year? I’ve only picked up the Dragons of Stormwreck isle starter set so far. Unsure as to when I’ll start or find a game to join as far as my timeline goes.
You can still play the current (2014) 5E books and not move over to the 2024 revision.
What is the appeal of PBP as a way to play a DnD game? I struggle to see it. Please help me understand.
There is 2 primary reasons people might like PBP
- Reduced social anxiety, since you don't have to talk to people over voice chat
- Asynchronous play, which means it can fit into anyone's schedule, and you just play whenever you have free time
You don't have to get everyone together for 2-4 hours at a time every single week to do PBP. You can just send messages throughout the day, every day
It makes turn based combat harder, but some people are willing to accept that downside for the other 2 benefits
Thanks for the helpful answer. I am not certain that I can imagine 3-5 (or more) players playing asynchronously however. I could imagine it only being a chaotic mess. Am I overlooking something?
Or otherwise taking days/weeks to run a single one-shot game
@cobalt frigate thanks
I've never done PBP myself, but from what I understand, I think the adventures are typically set up specifically to make asynchronous play easier. The story will be set up to allow players to come and go, which means if someone isn't online their character might just be at the tavern or off doing something else. They don't often do stuff like dungeon crawls where you are stuck in a specific place until its done
Question for PBP: is that just chat based dnd? Asking for context
Play By Post. Yeah its just playing D&D through text posts instead of over voice
Sounds interesting, id love to play that
In #looking-for-players look for any messages that specify that they are PBP. You can usually find at least a few
Yeah i plan to. I think that if you have good players,, 3-5 player PBP can be pulled off
PBP is very slow, to say nothing of other drawbacks, but it has some upsides besides what Colossus already mentioned.
The PBPs I've done have been through Discord, which makes searching for information very easy. (I do take notes in my real-time games, but even then it's not a complete record like it is when everything is conveyed via text.) You also get the benefit of having time to think and describe. I love playing D&D in real time, but as a writer, I know nothing I say as a DM or player is anywhere near as thoughtful or articulate as something I can mull over for more than a few seconds, minutes if I'm lucky. Getting to really shine with what I say and how is a real advantage, personally.
Plus, I think the kinds of people who are drawn to PBP tend to not engage in the problematic behavior you hear about online.
Thanks for the additional insight. Taking time to think about a response is certainly another major benefit of that style. Honestly, if I was to try out a PBP game, I think that would be my favorite part

Is it a good idea to use d20 roll checks in everyday life
like roll a d20 charisma check if you're going to ask out this girl or not
DMs decides when to do an ability check.
You're rolling, you just don't see the roll. so, yeah, do it.
No I mean like, outside of the game
thats what i mean, life is a game
like you literally roll a d20 in a middle of conversation to get a wisdom check
ah yes, life the game
Yup, sometimes you roll a d100
If a dice result gives you some level of pseudo-confidence then go for it
But if you do that in the middle of a convo expect to get some wierd looks
I mean, I dont think making your decisions based on coin flips or magic 8balls is a great idea either, so my answer is no
I mean I thought it'd be pretty funny and fun
just do it till you become proficient. 🙂
whats the best way to play dnd if i have no friends? lol
you'll make lifelong friends playing D&D. Go to a local gaming store and ask the clerk and they'll point you in the right direction
thats the thing, where i live there are no people playing this, wanted to see what are my options.
Check #find-a-game
Online play is normal these days, especially during the pandemic.
ill try

Could someone help me with a warlock question
im not insanely knowledgeable on that topic but go on
Basically I’m making a warlock character and I’m trying to decide who or what his contract is with
He’s gonna be a pact of the fiend warlock
Sure, though depending on the question #character-discussion or #optimization .
right, thanks

I might be able to help a bit
the bot post above links to the basic rules. the Handbooker Helper video series can also be of help, if need be.
I dont mind answering some questions you have
So how do alinments afect your character
Thats all based on you normally you use it as guild rather to how your character should think and handle certain rp
At least that is how I view it I suppose it depends on how much you want your character to follow alinments
I guess what I am wondering is if your alignment affects your stats at all
alignment is less a hardcore rule and more a vague guideline. There's 9 alignments, of course not everything nicely fits into 9 slots, but enough leaning and generalization can
Wont affect your stats just give you an rp outline of how your character might act
Nope, not even slightly. It's a self contained thing. Anyone can be any alignment, although some life choices and classes kinda lean towards one or another. For example, paladins are generically a goody-two-shoes glorious divine warrior. But someone with an oath of conquest or vengeance might be hardcore evil, who knows.
ok
It's all down to just, it being a part of how you write down how the character should generally act
what dose Ideal refer to
So it's not a hard rule, it's a guideline, since it's... personality, how you behave. the 9 alignments work nicely for corralling presumptions to a somewhat appropriate one. For example, devils are metaphysically lawful evil beings, so you expect them to be selfish, sadistic, but not chaotic random murder for the sake of it.
kind of like an ideological point they strive for, like 'it's our job to improve the world for those who need it', or 'the weak should fear the strong', yknow
what is bond refering to
Well, some kind of bond to something else
owing a debt, maybe sending money to your family, something you're bonded to. Be it honor, previous friends, current friends, etc.
I am a straight newcomer to this never played but my sister recommended me to try it because I love to come up with my own ideas for things so I really need help to figure out how to play and how to get better once I learn

I have a little question
I'm new to the whole DND character creation (dnd in general) and I wanted to make a Tiefling Divine Soul Sorcerer, My friend said it wasnt possible so I was just wondering what you guys thought
Yeah its possible. Nothing prevents any race/class combination
Unless your friend is the DM, in which case the DM can decide for something to not work if it doesn't fit the world or something, but by the rules as is, nothing stops you from doing so 👍
Well, he wasn't dming when I wanted to make my character but were gonna start a campaign soon so yea okay thank you so much

ty
What do you want to know?
can someone teach me the basics of dungeons on dragons? im new
@lyric fjord check out the info in this message
thank you 🙂
question, some Warlock invocations have level requirements but they only say "5th level" "9th level" etc. does that mean I have to be 5 levels in warlock or just be level 5?
5th level warlock because they're warlock features
Wait nvm
some require "5th level in warlock" while others require just "5th level"
Ah yeah, the ones that just say 5th level are character level, not class
Sorry, misunderstood
my bad thanks for answering tho
Under the description for invocations, it says "A level prerequisite refers to your level in this class."
If the prerequisite says "5th level" that does still mean "5th level in warlock"
Oh, interesting
the ones that say warlock in them specifically are only the ones from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which is a more recently published book. They probably changed the wording for that release to make it less confusing
Thanks

Thank you, will read it all now 😄
I finished the story that the bot send! That was wholesome 🙂 I am going to make my character now 😄
I'm gonna do my first campaign tomorrow so im gonna stay up all night to read the rest of the rules
Hello everyone!!
Heyooo!
Have fun.
I have a question, do character alignments have to be race/class specific? Like do all orcs have to be chaotic evil? Can barbarians be lawful?
There are no alignment restrictions based on race or class.
Alignment and race and class are all completely independent of each other. You can make your character however you want
You can have a lawful good orc wizard if you want
I looked at the DnD DM Manual, specifically for Oathbreaker, and it stated "Evil"
I snorked, chuckled, and carried on my day.
Nah i think it was in its small description.
Agreed
Death Domain Cleric and Oathbreaker Paladin were published in the DMG as class options that were specifically made to be given to NPC Villains. As such, both are described as evil subclasses, and have a listed requirement that the user be evil. They are available as player options only via special permission from the DM
A permission i seek to get asap. I want to play as Oathbreaker, but if not, no chip off my shoulder, and will go vengeance
I wouldn't recommend trusting a wiki.
A paladin must be evil and at least 3rd level to become an Oathbreaker. The paladin replaces the features specific to his or her Sacred Oath with Oathbreaker features.
When 5E was first designed there's the optional rule of NPCs having classes. 5E has moved away from that for ease of use for the DM.
We should move this to #character-discussion perhaps? Not really helping new players.
Can I share books in dnd beyond in a campaign even tho I’m the player?
Yep
Only if someone in your campaign has the Master Tier subscription.
Anyone with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing for a campaign.
Once that's enabled, everyone's books get shared with everyone else.
Okok thanks
Thank you all for answering my question! Appreciate it hehe

Here are some of my recommendations: #dnd-newcomers message
Hello, I'm new and I haven't bought anything for DND yet, what should I buy first? (I'm planning to to play a physical game)
Players handbook
Will do, thanks!
The Basic Rules are free and have the content you need to play. But if you do buy anything, the PHB is where to start.
PHB meaning players handbook?
Yep.
Technically, you can get by with the free Basic Rules that can be downloaded and printed out, but buying the Players Handbook is a good idea to start. If you want to use character options from other books, you can always borrow a copy from someone else at the table for reference. The "Big Four" for players are the Players Handbook, Xanathar's Guide To Everything, Mordenkainen's Monsters Of The Multiverse, and Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything. Those four books will give you nearly all of the race, class, subclass, feat & spell options available to characters.
Would you recommend the monsters manual and the dungeon masters guide? (I think that's how they're called)
If you're planning to be the DM, yes. If you're just a player, no.
Ah. I'm planning to play with my brothers (which are also new) would it be a good idea to switch DMS between each session? Or just stick to one DM?
Rotating DMs is fun. A bit mote chaotic than a typical game, but I think it's worth doing as you're learning so no one becomes the forever DM.
I would focus on the player-focused books for now. After you get more familiar with the game, exploring the MM and the DMG could be fun but as a player you won't really need them. The Monster Manual can be helpful for characters who transform into creatures like Druids can, or summon creatures like Druids & Rangers sometimes do. But again, I would prioritize the player-focused books for now.
Ah well, I'll still get the MM and DMG for whoever's teh DM, since I don't have anything yet.
I’m trying to find a dnd campaign to start with so I can learn the game but idk how to find a good game that welcomes newcomers
So, the buying list is: PHB, MM, and DMG
Just reply in the thread and ask in #looking-for-players.
To clarify, find a game you're interested in. Post in the thread and ask, "Is your game newcomer-friendly?".
Those are the core rules.
Well then, is there like a set that has everything to start ?
All you need to start is the free basic rules.
The books just provide more options, rules, items, etc.
There are slipcase bundles with all three core rule books and another with all three rules expansion (Tasha's, Xanathar's, and Monsters of the Multiverse).
I mean start a full session, physical with dice and things. Unless I need to buy everything separate for my first game?
The "get everything bundle" for books would be the DnDBeyond Legendary Bundle but that's expensive, not necessary (particularly when starting), and let me emphasize again, not necessary.
Anybody know where to find character creators for hadozee?
You'd need to buy access to the hadozee.
You could use the DnDByeond app/character sheet tools but you would need to own the book, or buy the specific race (for like $1.99), or be in a DNDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled that someone in the group in the campaign has the book.
You could recreate it in D&D Beyond using the homebrew function, provided it remains private.
Or are you talking about aesthetics?
^ That too (this is okay from WoTC/DnDBeyond)
I stumbled across an essentials kit, would that be useful?
I personally think it's a little less newbie-friendly than the dedicated starter sets, some think it's more so. Being inexpensive, it's not a huge gamble buying it (unlike the other rule books).
So should I buy the starter set then the essentials kit?
You don't need both. One or the other would be fine. (My rec is the starter set, but that's just one opinion.)
The difference is mainly the adventure.
So could I finish the starter set adventure then but the essentials kit? (Since it has another adventure and some extras)
Sure could!
It's decided! Thanks for helping me!:D
Have fun! Don't be afraid to ask more questions or participate in conversations as you keep with the hobby. (And if you decide it's not for you, that's cool too.)
Wait, just to clarify, I should buy the starter set and PHB then when finished the adventure on the starter set, I could buy the essentials kit? (This is for someone that has nothing, and plans to play with 2 other people) or should I buy the MM for the DM as well?
That's one way to do it, sure.
The Starter Set comes with premade characters, so you could do that to get a handle on things, then make your own characters for a new adventure with the Essentials Kit.
And what should I get for the DM?
Or are the rules in the starter set good enough?
The Starter Set has enough to get you started.
And the free Basic Rules expand on that some more.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Ah alright, thanks!
If they're just running the adventures as-is, that's probably enough.
But the Monster Manual would be fun if they want to start adding or changing things.
what platform for online play should i use?
i dont have a party im transitioning with im looking for random people online.
There’s no right or wrong answer there. Each group basically picks and chooses whatever works best for them.
I like playing on Discord with D&D Beyond for character sheets, Owlbear Rodeo for maps, and Avrae for dice rolls.
i was thinking about using foundry but it seems pretty hard to find players
Foundry's Discord server has plenty of folks looking for games... 😉
Might want to check there.
Great community there - but yeah any further discussion of third-party tools should be done in the #third-party channel.
No worries! Good luck and I hope you find a fun bunch to play D&D with (here or there)!
thanks
ive been in this server for a HOT minute, but ive been hesitant to really speak in here due to my general lack of understanding of the game (though i know most of the basics) and time constraints.
ive only played 2 games that never went anywhere (1 irl session that lasted only a day and 1 online one that just fell apart) and that got me kinda nervous id never finish any game.
i REALLY want to start and find a game that i can partake in, so i really need some advice on how to start.
honestly it took a lot of courage to even write this tbh, idk what to do after i send this so 🤷

So are you trying to find another game or group to join? We have some useful info in #find-a-game and that also has instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
yeah mainly just that in all honesty
ive just done nothing but lurk in the server trying to understand it but i just have a hard time for some reason

Well feel free to hang around and just observe as you'd like - some folks just need to watch things first before slowly getting into the water. Don't feel like you have to post anything or discuss anything - watching and listening is a perfectly fine way to participate.
well there comes another issue about that, ive kinda been doing that sense... 2019... and have not acted or attempted to sense then
dnd is the whole reason i made a discord account
No worries
I want to start playing but Idk what class to choose. I like the idea of using magic but Idk if that is too difficult or not.
If you're new, the only spellcasting role I'd really suggest avoiding is being the group's primary healer.
If by magic you mean a spellcaster, then that would mean there’s more to learn.
But none of it is unknowable.
There’s other things that are magical that aren’t spells, too, though.
Like a rune knight fighter.
I want to play like a primary mage type of class. In other rpg games I played mages and that's what I've perfered for a while.
Then go for it. 👍
You’ll enjoy the game more if you’ve got a character you’re invested in.
What are the recommended spellcaster class?
Depends on what you’re looking for.
Wizard or sorcerer are probably the “mage”-iest.
Alright, thank you.
Bards, clerics, druids, and warlocks are the other primary spellcasters.
Thanks once again.
ill try and get into the most recent game posted in the looking for players chat
dont have high hopes however
I think I'm going to go with wizard thank you!
Wizard is a pure caster and will drmand that you study thoroughly as it has the largest spell list. I would recommend against anyone starting with that class as it is an uphill challenge.
If you really want to do it, be prepared to put in the time
A fighter is the easiest class to learn
If you must be a caster, cleric is the easiest
It's not really a "must" more like a a preference. But I'll keep that in mind.
Martial characters are easier to learn, they typically have simple mechanics that make them viable in a party.
Spellcaster on the other hand are kind of complex because they have a long list of spells with a lot of resource management required to do well
So while not impossible to learn and they definitely are really fun to play, it can be a little overwhelming
Idk but complece things are fun for me to figure out and digest imo.
Then I highly recommend the wizard for you
Wizard is pretty complicated, however once you understand them they aren’t that bad to keep track of
Alright, thank you so much.
Yup np hope you have a good time
Intelligence, dexterity, constitution
You want to start with at least 16 int, 14 con, and ideally 14 Dex
INT boosts your spells. DEX and CON help keep you alive.
Ohh, alright.
More specifically, INT affects your spell attack modifier and spell save DC (making your spells succeed more often), plus the number of spells you can prepare.
Hello
CON affects your max HP and helps you maintain concentration on spells.
And DEX improves your AC, making you harder to hit.
Welcome!
I dont know if this is the right place to ask but dose anyone know or has a dnd champion to join
Champion as in the fighter subclass? Or something else?
Oh, did you mean a campaign?
Game* sorry I cant spell or its ado correct from digimon stuff
If you’re looking for a group to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Yea dat
Hello! I’m a new player and will be hoping a group in March. We will be playing daily for about an hr at a time during our lunch. I am hoping to play a Dragonborn fighter with a subclass of cleric. Mainly to add a little healing. Thoughts?
Thoughts on what specifically?
Cleric isn’t a fighter subclass. I’m assuming you’re mixing up subclasses and multiclassing
Ehh you are correct
Subclasses are a specific class based specialisation you choose somewhere from level 1-3 (level 3 for fighter)
Multiclassing is taking a whole level in a different class
I really don’t recommend multiclassing for a new player
If you're looking for feedback on a character idea, you should head to #character-discussion.
Ty. I’ll head there.
You could go Paladin for a mix of healing and weapon use
If I use arcane focus on my wizard which item should I take?
What you choose has no mechanical difference, so whatever one you like the image of best.
It’s really just a flavour choice, there’s no mechanical difference
Oh, so I've been thinking really hard for nothing.😂😂
It happens a lot when folks are new!
And even after they've been playing for a while. It's all made up, and we still spend hours doing it.
Thank you guys!😂
Helloooo everyone!! I’m super new, and I would totally love some advice on how to be… well… good at DnD. Also, I would totally love to join a campaign but I know that’s a crazy ask.
Welcome to the hobby 🙂

The bot post above can walk you through the basics.
Thank you!!
As for advice:
- Communicate with the group your expectations, boundaries, and preferences to foster a compatible group.
- While you don't need to know every rule, taking the time to understand how your character works goes a long way.
- Come up with ways to turn bad rolls into fun moments at the table.
- Showcase respect and patience by giving the table your undivided attention.
- Be a team player and work with your party. After all, D&D is a cooperative game.
OK I feel like I need help making a character that I enjoy, like I actually enjoy yhe concept and not get bored of them and try to make a new character based off a theme or ability and then repeat.
#character-discussion is probably a better place for that. This channel is for more fundamental aspects of the game.
Ahh alright! Thanks
I’d agree with Zero, and add the following off-hand:
- Don’t make your fun interfere with anyone else’s—by which I mean avoid doing things the group hasn’t explicitly consented to. “It’s what my character would do” as an excuse for bad behavior is still bad behavior. Don’t do that.
- Say thank you to the DM and try to go in the direction where the story is, not away from it. This shows respect for their prep time.
- The party is the main character, so try not to hog the spotlight. Even better, try to invite others into said spotlight by showing interest in their characters and ideas.
I'm still new to dnd in general and haven't checked out this server in a while, also just wanted to ask how to find a good group. Cause I tried one in my school cause back then they were just murder hobos

That post has the info for getting started. Spread your net wide, be patient, and communicate about your wants/expectations for the game. Doing those things won’t guarantee a good group, but they hopefully will tip the scales in your favor!
Alrighty thanks!

what does the stuff like ‘1d3’ mean?
The first number is how many dice you roll and the second is how many sides on the dice.
So '1d6' is one 6-sided die. 2d20 is two 20-sided dice.
1d3 are pretty rare, and in most cases people don't have a 3-sided dice (They exist and are strange looking), so you might instead roll a 1d6 and half the result, rounding up.
I get it now, thank you. Also they look pretty hideous 😭
Hello?
Hi and welcome
So when do we get to play D&D
Do you understand how D&D works/what it is?
What it is? Yes. How it works?………kinda
Welcome. May your dice roll high.
Okay, well you understand that you play D&D as part of a group, right? Usually about 5 ish people one of which is the DM?
Oh yeah i knew that tho with my group we just used 4 people including DM
Cool, just checking because asking "So when do we get to play D&D" doesn't really make sense as a question
You get to play D&D whenever your group decides to have a session
Also in case there is any confusion, no games are actually hosted on this server.
Yeah, exactly, there are no games hosted here, no 'we' (the server) playing D&D
You can find games through #find-a-game but the server in general is to chat and talk about D&D, but no games are played directly on or through the server.
What made you decide to get into dnd?
I got into D&D through Neverwinter Nights 1. In some ways no too different to how people are now getting into D&D through Baldur's Gate 3.
Always wanted to play it, never got to it. Now i'm planning on trying it for the first time with me being the DM
some friends at school invited me to their dnd group once
That group died, but I'd already gotten hooked
I cannot for the life of me find a DnD group from where I am
Completely new to it and have looked everywhere lmao
Have you tried starting a group?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
I'm in a group rn but we might be going on a hiatus so I want to find another group in the meantime
I do not possess the social capabilities to start a group lol
If you have the "social capabilities" to find a group, you have what is needed to start one
Hmm, true
There are no super-special skills beyond finding somewhere where people post their group, and then posting yourself
I asked my friends if they wanted to play DnD once and they told me to get stuffed
I think that's what put me off from starting one
You might have more luck in a place where people come to talk about D&D.
My girlfriend and I are brand new to d&d. I’ve played a one shot already but she hasn’t played at all. All we really know is d&d beyond. Just wanted to see how often there are specifically d&d beyond games
What do you mean by "specifically D&D Beyond games"? D&D Beyond is just a tool to help you play D&D
Welcome to the hobby
Some groups all use DDB, some don't use it all, and in some cases only a few members or just the DM will use it
I've not had a problem using DDB for my character sheets, and I've played in a fair few games. Don't worry about it.
Oh I gotcha, so we can play in a d&d game while other people are using pen and paper and we use d&d beyond?
Yes - DnDBeyond just provides a digital toolset but it can be used with other tools and materials used to play D&D - physical or digital.
Awesome
You're right
helloo

i went n looked thru DM posts but no luck alot of em r full
oh well it is still my first day
I don't think that's accurate
of the 10 most recent posts in #looking-for-players, only 3 of them say they're explicitly full
It doesn't hurt to reply to every post that catches your eye; the more lines you cast out the more chances you have of landing a game
Just gotta be persistent
and we have #looking-for-community which is entire D&D servers that may have other D&D game opportunities as well
And if you mean Voice Chat, we do not have those here.
Hello
hi
So.. what should i do first?
in making a character?
First of making my own character? How should i do?
Asian? Maybe?
haha
asian isnt a race. i mean human, elf, gnome, etc
@digital matrix I’d recommend going to the website D&D beyond, it has everything and is super easy for newcomers
It’s also free
Ouh.. sorry.. I'm interested to be an orc
I see
an orc, or a half orc?
Aren't they planning to change it from race to species?
What's the different?
afaik orc isnt really a "standard" race option, half orc is
a half orc is common in most campaigns and games. an orc, while a playable race, is sometimes not allowed due to them generally being terrifying to people
Ouh.. damn.. idk the "race" kinda.. related half orc then
when we say race we mean like "species", like sentient beings that arent humans (tho human is a race too)
Alright noted 👍
The website D&D beyond has all of the races. It explains all of their abilities and stats. It even explains how to play the game. You can build characters and everything. I highly recommend going through that first then coming back for questions. That way you have some knowledge and people don’t have to explain every little detail. Just a suggestion @digital matrix
I always saw people take note of their character. What things should be to job down?
what do you mean?
What do you all write down on the sheets?
Important npc names, quest objectives and town details. Plus i like to journal about how my character feels about recent events in the campaign
I'm sorry for my stupidity. Like I said, I'm totally a newbie but interested to join
That's it? Name and some backlash?
Yeah.. i would love to play as a range attacker? Idk what's the class name
Ranger. Maybe warlock
someone who uses a bow? or do you mean the Ranger class?
Is the weapon up to use to choose or is there any yess and nos?
every class gets specific proficiencies with weapons
Have you read the free basic rules?
Each class gets a set starting equipment that is listed in the basic rules
almost every class can attack at range
your class decides what abilities you get (wizards get a lot of spells, bards get some buffing abilites), what weapons you can use is loosely decided by what class you have but that shouldnt be the main focus of picking your class
are there any servers where i can play dnd online with others?
Which part of the basic rules do I read? (If I read everything I'll most likely forget the important parts)
i would read up on the basics on how the game works + character creation
Maybe both because I'm playing with my brothers (which are also new)
as a dm you need a lot more

yup
Yeah but what are the key parts to read
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure free starter with loads of hints tips
Great for new DMs and players
Thanks:D
Thanks to everyone for helping!
phb then whatever fancies you
tashas is a personal fav
are you a player or a dm?
ah
dmg, phb
That's kind of relevant information if you're asking what books you should get
do any of your players have xanathars and tashas? theyre nice, but after character creation, theyre not amazing espcailly if you dont play any subclass fromthem
Given that you have the core three, my top five recommendations after that would be
- Xanathar's Guide to Everything
- Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
- Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
- Keys from the Golden Vault
- Candlekeep Mysteries

Man, inventing a campaign is hard, never played d&d and I want to think of everything
If you’re new to dnd, running a pre-written adventure is recommended.
yeah start small and/or start with a prewritten adventure
sometimes a longer campaign can also develop from a one shot or short adventure as things just grow orgianically
The plan was to start with a pre written campaign but after that they sail on the open seas something happens they get stranded without memory on an island. Which is the prequel to the main plot I was thinking of. Damn writing it down like this, makes it sound huge
so every character has amnesia?
Sounds like STORMWRECK ISLE
They remember their past and who they are, but not what happened on the previous campaign & how they got on the island
Does it?
Similar premise.
Keeping things within the context of #dnd-newcomers
Do note that creating a campaign requires flexibility for player agency and balancing combat encounters
Thanks, I guess i'll just forget the prequel and use stormwreck Isle instead
Do write down your ideas though.
After you’ve built up experience as a DM, revisit any ideas for a potential campaign.
I honestly have so many ideas for a campaign, just struggle with the storytelling when it comes to speaking
Words don't come out of my mouth properly, unfortunately
You could always consider Play By Post if that makes your more comfortable. Its a perfectly valid method of play

Welcome! The bot post above should have everything you need to get started
For the past 2 weeks I've been studying that! I wonder how far can we loose the imagination. Watched few DnD sessions on youtube and DM's there allow a lot of freedom. Is it normal to have more freedom or is it about what DM you get?
I guess that depends on what you mean by freedom. Typically though, during non-combat play you can at least attempt to do anything you want, and the dice will determine if it works or not, while during combat, there are much more strict rules about what you can and cannot do and when
I was thinking outside of combat. DM explains the scene, is it allowed to ask few qustions about scene or like say :I think I have seen some object in the distance? Or only DM places objects in the scene?
Sorry If im confused 😦
D&D is improv. The DM presents a situation to the players and they act/react to that situation. In turn, the DM act/reacts to the players' decisions.
So its like verbal tenis?
Ultimately the DM controls the contents of the world.
Sort of, but you're never serving.
So sure, you could say you think you see something in the distance, but the DM may or may not play along.
Is this video : D&D Live 2019: The Descent good example of proper DnD
The DM determines what is or is not there. You as a player can't say "I see this object" if the DM didn't put it there. But you can ask them if there might be something there. They can either say "yes there is" or "no there isn't" or "make a perception check to find out"
The DM will present an adventure hook and the players should bite so the adventure can proceed but there's nothing really stopping them from doing something else. However, there's a social contract between the DM and players — the players should take up the "quests" the DM gives them.
A more typical case might be telling the DM you want to look to the distance for signs of... whatever you want to look for.
For example, if the DM describes that you arrive at a locked door, few would allow you to say "oh look, I found a key here on the ground!"
but you could say "I'd like to look around for a key"
Player: "I look for a bottle of whiskey in the bedroom."
DM: "Roll a Perception check."
Player: "I rolled a 8"
DM: "You don't find one."
Not plain as that! Could I say, My intuiotion tells me there has to be someway to look around for a key?
"You arrive at a locked door."
"Is there a key around?"
"Roll a perception check."
Or "I want to search the room for a key"
Or "I want to pick the lock"
Or "I want to break down the door"
Or...
Oh ok thats like straightforward but If I wanna rollplay I could say something like : my father thought me to pick locks long time ago i could try with this one?
Sure
But your character needs to be proficient with Thieves' Tools to pick locks though.
That typically wouldn't effect what you roll.
What you said is flavour (My father taught me when I was a kid) but gameplay mechanic-wise you need to be proficient in Thieves' Tools.
Proficiency with these tools lets you add your proficiency bonus to any ability checks you make to disarm traps or open locks.
But can something like flavour point the DM to initiate the check? Like acrobatics or something. If i wrote it in my backstory or do I need to initiate it?
You can make the check regardless; you just wouldn't add your proficiency bonus.
You can ask the DM if your character can do something. The DM tells you if you need to roll an ability skill check to see if you succeed or fail.
I'd say actions initiate checks, not flavor.
There are character creation rules. What you get bonuses on and whatnot are determined by what you choose when making your character, not based on what you wrote in.
Yeah I have seen the rules just wondered does It count toward anything like If i wrote that I was in circus before would it lead to dm assuming I can jump over door?
In general, focus on intent. What is it you want to accomplish in the moment? It could be specific, like "I want to look for a key", or general, like "I want to find a way past the locked door."
Once your DM knows where you're trying to go, they can help you get there.
Or other players might even chime in with their own solutions or suggestions.
The purpose of a backstory is to explain and give context to the choices you made during character creation. You don’t get new abilities through it
Thx that was the answer I was looking for!
I wish I could express my better sometimes!!!
A background does provide proficiencies, though.
Yeah the few you can select from the character menu when you create?
I’ll start writing the
So if you want your character to have been trained by their father to pick locks, you could select proficiency with thieves' tools as part of your background.
Remember that most new players start playing at level 1. You wouldn't write a backstory how amazing your character is ("I slew an ancient dragon!") when they just started their adventuring career straight out of the academy/school/abbey.
Your character's real story is the story ahead.
Trust me I'm starting rock bottom same as my character 🙂
You made me feel little less scared!?
Backstory is flavour of what drives your character to become an adventurer.
Background the gameplay mechanics of what gives your character their starting skills.
I'm so hyped for first game that you can't even imagine! Even my wife is hyped for me lol
Also, not to turn this into a rules discussion, but just FYI proficiency in thieves tools is required to even make the check to open a locked door.
Locked Doors. Characters who don’t have the key to a locked door can pick the lock with a successful Dexterity check (doing so requires thieves’ tools and proficiency in their use).
Source: DMG: Dungeon Features
lets say that i got a nat 20 + 7 on something does that 7 change anything?
Depends!
If it's an attack, then no: a critical hit hits no matter what.
If it's an ability check or saving throw then yes! A natural 20 doesn't guarantee success in those situations
ok thank you
Death saving throws are the other exception. A nat 20 there gives you 1hp, so you're back on your feet.
Figuratively back on your feet. You're still prone.
good to know
btw what is 1d6?
That means you'd roll 1 six-sided die.
oh that explains a lot
In these rules, the different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
