If you click on the spell there, it should shoe you the full rules for it.
it does, but i just don't get what 2d4 means, like is it an abreviation?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/vicious-mockery
"You unleash a string of insults laced with subtle enchantments at a creature you can see within range. If the target can hear you (though it need not understand you), it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 1d4 psychic damage and have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn."
"This spell's damage increases by 1d4 when you reach 5th level (2d4), 11th level (3d4), and 17th level (4d4)."
the damage is 2 four sided dice
It means you roll two four-sided dice.
it's how much damage it deals.
ohhhh so i throw 2 4 sided dice and the total is the damage?
yeah
yes in this case
Yep!
i understand now
So for example, if you roll a 2 and a 3, it'll deal a total of 5 damage
Assuming the target failed their saving throw.
thank ya'll, this helped a lot
If they succeed, they avoid the damage for this spell.
And the disadvantage on their next attack.
They’re unaffected.
i see
yeah, this spell is "succeed or take damage"
some other spells may deal half damage if they succeed instead of no damage
for example, the classic Fireball, a creature takes the full damage on a fail, or half as much on a success
yeah that makes sense, i'll come back here if i have any more questions that google won't answer
my test for seeing if i know the lingo is to go into general chat or character discussion and see how long it takes for me to get lost in translation
wait, wait
thats rad
vicious mockery isn't a reaction
cutting words
what you could do, if you pick the College of Lore- yeah that
thats pretty funny
it's like the psychout from baseketball
Let’s keep things family-friendly, please.
ah, sorry sorry
"better get scrambled like an egg fore' u get folded like an omelette"
does anyone know how i can change my character race to a Three-Quarterling in DnD beyond or if there is a specific book i would need to get first? im new to DnD also
three-quarterling isn't a thing?
its not a thing? i thought it was an option as a hybrid between a halfling and a human?
no, it's not.
make them a Halfling and just flavor them as a bit taller than average
Sorry, I don't use DND beyond, but I recommend u to use a paper character sheet. You can add whatever you want and don't need to pay for it
Im pretty sure you are referencing a halfling and a human right? There is no official doccument that has that as a race but there is ofcourse the optional rule where you can make you own race using tashas 😄
tashas? yeah it would be my own race for my character that i would want to use
Aslong as your DM is ok with it, look out ofr Tasha's Cauldran of Anything then using Custom Lineage youll be able to choose a feat, variable trait and languages your custom race may know 🙂
okay i will look for the book on DnD beyond
Good luck! 😄 if you have any other quests let us know!
does anyone know how to set up a campain on DnD beyond to use as a map? My friend plays DnD with some of his freinds and he is trying to set up a campain for me and two of our friends and so far hasn't had the best of luck yet
idk why you wouldnt just play a halfling with an above average height and a backstory containing a human parent, but more power to you if you want to go purchase Tasha's Cauldron I guess
perhaps a lighter browser-based solution like Owlbear Rodeo would be better for a first timer?
There isnt a Virtual Table top on dnd beyond but there are a few third party sites such as roll20 which you can use to run your games. You may need to upload your own maps that you bought on dnd beyond, but you can also found them online 🙂
actually there is the maps tool
DnDBeyond is rolling out a new tool called Maps but it's currently in Alpha testing and only available to Master Tier subscribers
But I would recommend something else still, such as owlbear rodeo being free and even dynamic fog can be free (instead of roll20's subscription tool)

Does Uncanny Dodge work against attacks that cause Saving Throws instead of making To-Hit rolls?
No but Evasion does.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#UncannyDodge
Starting at 5th level, when an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to halve the attack’s damage against you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Evasion2
Beginning at 7th level, you can nimbly dodge out of the way of certain area effects, such as a red dragon’s fiery breath or an ice storm spell. When you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, and only half damage if you fail.
Cool epic thanks
Welcome!
No. An attack is specifically something that calls for an attack/to-hit roll
In rules terms, something that just calls for a saving throw isn’t an attack
That's what I suspected, thank you
Hello I have created a character but now what do I do?
You can also share it in #character-discussion and/or #optimization if you’d like feedback on it.
oh that would make sense
Keep in mind both serve different purposes as the channel names imply.
Hi everyone, I'm new and I have never played DnD. I would love to learn and play some.

Please give the free basic rules a skim and if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel here on the server (see id:browse to see all the many channels we have).
Hey would anyone like to see my character
Did you make them on dndbeyond?
You’re welcome to share the Reroll one in #dnd-heroforge-etc.
Alright
Would be better to see the version on dnd beyond.
Though, what would you like feedback on?
If it's character concept then #character-discussion would be the place.
If it's the build quality, then #optimization would be the place.
Could I maybe switch weapons in the middle of a campaign if I did a long rest? Or could I only find the weapon myself
Some DMs let you switch weapons as an action or even freely in combat (assuming you have the weapon in your equipment).
But talk to your DM.
If you’re just swapping, say, one longbow for another thats easy enough
But if you’re changing weapon types there may be be other considerations
and you can't switch to your custom homebrew awesome blade of doom you just made up right now at an instant
You can interact with one object on your turn for free, which could be used to draw or stow a weapon.
If you want to interact with a second one on the same turn, you’d need to use your action as well.
Broadly speaking, though, any character can use any weapon.
So using any particular weapon is not a permanent choice.
You’ll generally want to use a weapon you’re proficient with, though, since you’ll be more likely to land a hit.
What is a session 0?
A session where the group meets to discuss game expectations, play style, what's allowed, not allowed, expected player behavior, how to handle personal conflict in the group, set schedules, and roll-up characters/workshop characters together. DM may also present a high level overview of the campaign/game.
oh ok thank you
i only found out about d&d yesterday from my brother i know little to nothing and want guidance

What second language to speak with human
elvish or dwarvish tend to show up
do yuan-ti have to be pure bloods or can they be like a humanoid snake person.
if they were a snake person (like with scales and a tail) would they be able to jump
Yuan-ti pure blood is the only option for a playable yuan-ti, but their appearance is largely just a matter of flavor. If you would rather have a snake-like body, you could do that with your DM’s permission. It would just be a visual thing though, and wouldn’t affect your game mechanics in any way
but how would you be able to jump with that big tail, or, would you be able to strangle an enemy
or would your tail take up extra space in combat
im just very confused about this
Dnd isnt trying to simulate physics. Your character can do what the features/rules say it can do, and you gotta go with it
a medium character takes up one space, a 1 inch square on a standard grid which represents 5 square feet “in-game”
So would your tail be like a ghost that other creatures could move through or would they be able to trip on it out of combat
The playable version of “Yuan Ti” is humanoid with snakelike features: “a forked tongue, snake eyes, a snakelike nose, or some other ophidian characteris”
so no tail
Found in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the multiverse
Here is where we must discuss the distinction between flavor and mechanics
yeah. i read the book. but my freind wanted to be more of a snake
If you want to describe the appearance of your character as more snake-like you are free to do so, because looks/sounds/smells are mostly cosmetic
These things have no effect on your character’s ability to do stuff, which is why its allowed
so would it be a ghost or a trip hazard
If you want a tail that actually affects things mechanically you will need to talk to your DM about customizing somethibg
again - if you want to describe your character as having a tail, thats fine as long as it has no in game effect
For role playing purposes if you and the table want the tail to do something, you’ll need to have a chat
yep. thanks
I got a quick question what weapons would you recommend for a bloodhunter
same as for a Fighter

Hey guys ive been playing my first ever dnd campaign and im currently a level 10 Aarakocran Path Of The Giant Barbarian Whos Name is Kaw ** Pun Intended ** and now im about to make my 2nd character im completely obsessed about the idea of a LizardFolk Artificer Alchemist called Salazar Sunscale
My question is what are the best two traits for a artificer in hunters lore. i was going to go survival and nature
Survival = Wisdom
Nature = Intelligence
Artificer main stat= Intelligence
Some Dungeons & Dragons backgrounds that provide survival and nature proficiencies include Outlander, Sage, and Hermit. These backgrounds can enhance your character's wilderness survival skills and knowledge of nature.
Hey everyone! I’m not sure where to post this I am looking for a group to play some dnd, I own all the guides I am very new to dnd so I am still learning on how to play!
#find-a-game has all the details for looking here
Thank you
Hey, I'm new to the game and was lucky enough to find this insanely great group of people who are really nice and get along really well with each other and they helped me learn the game (I read the rules but didn't really understand anything until actually going in with them for a session and making tons of mistakes). But I do think my sense of humor is different from theirs in a way I don't think is bad/wrong/etc. We're just a bit different. Would you guys say the most important thing is "vibes" in your group? I am considering just dropping out after 2 sessions because I don't want to make things awkward/be a drag because whenever somebody says something I can't hit the ball back because I just have nothing to say to that type of thing lol. Kinda feels like my mind just doesn't bend that way if you catch my drift
Variety is the spice of life
But if you are uncomfortable there is no shame in stopping
Thanks, I'll sleep on it
Are you having fun?
Cuz if you are am sure they are
Well, today I had some fun with em but mostly I was just kinda uneasy for some reason, and they're good people so they tried to get me to unbend a little. But yeah if you aren't having fun that makes other people not have fun which kinda sucks
I would go a few more times my first time playing was awkward too
I said like 3 sentences
I was dming💀
But see that is a funny story now in the future?
Yeah. Thanks 😊
Playing a tiefling warlick lets go
Hello! I'm a beginner in DM (and D&D) and I have a session later today with my players, which are also all beginners. I'm using a premade campaign I found online. I have a few questions:
- When my players enter in a new room with no encounters and just stuff to check, what do I tell them? Do I just ask them what they want to do? Do I stay silent?
- Also when they decide to check something in the area, how does that work? Do they tell me which part they want to explore and I decide which skill they will use?
Describe the room and any interesting details you think the characters would notice without an active search.
what does DC mean in saving throws?
If the party wishes to investigate ask them to describe how their characters do that - then use that to decide what skill checks are needed and what difficulty challenge they need to beat
Difficulty Challenge - the threshold they need to meet or beat
thanks
If there's nothing to find, do I still let them do the checks?
You can let them try if you feel it's appropriate - or you can say " After searching the room, you're sure there's nothing here." If they still don't buy it you can use your "out of game" voice say "No really, there is nothing here - let's move on".
Okay, thank you!
You could even throw in some random treasure like a couple of gold pieces or something though if wanted too - don't feel you have to run everything exactly as written.
This could also be a small reward for players who dive into roleplaying and try to search things
It's actually difficulty class but it's close enough. It's the number they need to meet or beat to succeed.
Depending on the passive perception and passive investigation of certain characters, you could also highlight what some characters inherently noticed.
It can also help to encourage your players to ask clarifying questions.
how does one get truesight?
Usually through a spell or magic item. So ask your DM 😁
thanks
You can get devil sight as a warlock though.
does it work the same?
Of course, if the party are going to take the time to check down the cracks of the flagstones for spare change, rattling around in stone rooms wearing metal armour... sometimes the reward will include attention from the inhabitants.
No, Devil's Sight is darkvision plus.
"You can see normally in darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet."
Not exactly since you can get it very early in the class. It lets you see in magical darkness.
While Blindsight, while the range is limited can let you detect invisible enemies.
ohh okay
so true sight is like a combination of the others

so is this one big universe, or does every DM make his own universe?
D&D is not a shared universe by default
Some DMs may collaborate on a game world, and some community servers run all their games in a shared world, but that's not the default
makes sense, thanks
Hello, I have another question, in my premade campaign, when my players reach to the final area, the boss will be stalking them, without them knowing at first until they reach a specific point (his eggs) or until a player notices it.
To be exact, this is what the campaign says:
- As one of the players notice one is opened (egg), the wyrmling will attack (unless the players noticed it previously).
How can they notice the dragon? Is it with passive presseption? If it is, do I take the average of their passive presseptions after I ask them and make up a DC?
If you’re doing a group check, the way it works is if at least half the group passes the check, then the group succeeds.
Greetings
whats good fellow sapien
Hello friends!
Hope yall having a great day, i have played a DnD session for a couple of times, i have really enjoyed it!
I told about this to my friends a while ago, they wanted to play DnD as well.
Even though its so little, i am the only one who is experienced with DnD, i have decided to be a dungeon master.
Is there any guides that will help me to learn that position?
What’s the name of the campaign?
I can take a look at it to get more details.
u can always get the doungen master guide
Are you talking about that 50$ book sir?
there are also plenty of youtube videos
If you’re going to be DMing for the first time, it’s recommended that you start with a pre-written adventure, so it can do some of the heavy lifting for you.
I also recommend getting a DM screen, you can print some pretty good ones. Ideally DM screens should have info that you’ll often need such as what different conditions there are and what they do.
If cost is a concern the dnd beyond website has a free adventure for new DMs.
DMs guild can also provide some free adventures.
I believe even though im a really good writer, there will be many difficulties to write a session.
Thanks for the advice!
Happy to help.
Keep in mind that writing is only one part. Game design is another part and what may make something a good story may not always translate into a fun game experience.
what is the maximum potential proficiency/expertise modifier?
Temple of the Dragonknights
Having trouble with the DMs guild website on mobile.
For now, you can either use their passive or have them make a group check.
So if at least half the group succeeds the check, then it’s a group success.
Hi,
I’ve been listening to and watching DnD content for awhile and have been looking into how to get into it what’s the best way to find a group without being a hinderance to other players while learning (even making a character seems daunting to me) and I think I’ll struggle with the rp side as it’s not something I’m used to
Get the dnd app it will guide you on how to make characters
So easy

Hello! I’m new to dnd and was hoping to find a group to play with! Shoot me a dm if there is a group that would potentially like to start up a longterm campaign!
To find a group check out #looking-for-players
If you’re wanting to make post that you’re looking for a group, follow the instructions in #find-a-game
If you’re new to dnd, I also recommend starting with one shots.
That way you can try out different classes and discover what is most fun for you.
One shots are also a great way to test out group dynamics to see if you’re compatible with everyone at the table before committing to a long term campaign.
what is a one shot
Basically a short adventure lasting only about one session
A one shot is an adventure meant to be played in one sitting. Typically these can range from 2 to 4 hours.
Sometimes, yep!
You can, there is also a community campaign called adventure league which is comprised of one shots.
#1050206572535623690 can point you to groups and places that host them.
If you have questions about Adventure League, feel free to ask in #adventurers-league

Also, some postings in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 use a tool called hammer time. So the dates and times are presented in the viewers time zone.
You’ll know that someone is using hammer time when the dates and times have a shaded background.
how do I start a fresh new campaign? and where do I find players for it?
If you’re going to be DMing for the first time, it’s recommended that you start with a pre-written adventure, so it can do some of the heavy lifting for you.
DMs guild and dnd beyond provides some free adventures that are suited for new DMs and players.
As for finding players.
In this server specifically, you can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to have the bot make a posting for you in #looking-for-players .
For best odds of success, run one session adventures so you can test how compatible the people at the table are.
That way you can have a group that will be comprised with people that have similar preferences and have a better chance of getting along.
This is the get-up-and-get-playing guide: https://howtogm.guide/
If you want to level up beyond that, I'd recommend Matt Coville's "Running the Game" YouTube series, Sly Flourish's Lazy Dungeon Master books/blogs, the Angry GM's blog, Johnn Four's Roleplaying Tips website/books, and Justin Alexander's book/blog (including the Alexandrian).
What does VTT mean?
Virtual Table Top. A kind of program to play DnD on your computer screen so everyone can see the battle map, dice rolls, and character placement.
Oooh, okay thank you 👍👍

how does playing dnd on discord is like? Is it staring at the discord tabs and shit
I'm not sure what you mean by "Is it staring at the discord tabs and shit" but generally it involves joining a group call or voice channel and then you just play D&D
A lot like how you would in person
To play D&D, you just need a way to communicate with other people. That could be through text chats, voice calls, in person, or anything else. Discord is usually used either for online voice based or text based games. But, there’s nothing special about the tool that makes it required for the game or anything like that. It’s just a convenient way to talk to other people online
If I have +4 char modifier, does it addup with proficiencies, or is that separate?
Like for persuation for example.
I meant is it like Dm talking and throwing dice
It’s exactly the same as a normal game of D&D.
Never played. I meant is there a platform or are we expected to trust the dm of dice rolls
If you are proficient in a skill that uses charisma, like persuasion or deception, then you add both your charisma modifier and your proficiency bonus to a d20 roll for that skill check. If you are not proficient in the skill you are making a check in, then you only add your charisma modifier
You can use programs like MapTool and essentially have it as an online serverless gaming platform which the players can join the hosting DM at
There are platforms that can let you digitally roll dice and let the whole party see the result.
Thank you. I meant this.
Hello!
Hi
Hello mate, howayah
Say, mind helpin this newbie on how things works round here?
Anyone?
Yep
We're blind about dnd and want to join in the fun
Have a group to play with?
That's actually one of our current problem haha
So you can use #find-a-game to well you can guess
No problem
I'm actually quite the old man about these kind of stuffs, also I'm not used to discord so this is going to be quite hard for me.

Hi 🙂
Looking at first time DM'ing once I get my friends together (All new to D&D but played Baldurs Gate / Divinity Original Sin so have the gist!), will likely run Stormwreck Isle via D&D Maps - I think the group could end on 5 players in the party, will that be manageable for a first time group?
Yeah that sounds like a fine amount
Hi. New player. I’m joining a campaign and wanted a second look at my character to make sure my /sorcerer cantrips/spells/metamagic make sense. Is there a good way to share my sheet or dnd beyond character?
#character-discussion share it here
Woo thanks
It seems like there's a lot of rules for back stories and stuff I'm trying to make sure I'm making something the dm would like
But it seems like there's a lot of unwritten rules for players does anyone have a link to the a guide on that
There aren't really rules for backstory. This would be something you would work with your DM to see if it fits with their campaign setting.
The only rule is "Is your DM ok with it?" which is something only they can answer
If you write a backstory where you are the child of a deity and have superpowers at level 1, a DM will probably say no to that.
I tried making a character similar to me because I'm learning but it seems like it contained things people don't like
Why make a character similar to you? The point of roleplaying games is that you can be anyone (within the scope of the DM's campaign setting).
I never wanted to be anyone else I've always been happy just being myself with people I love I can flexible if it'll make them happy
It's certainly simpler for some folks. There's a certain kind of enjoyment in being able to see yourself in the heroic role of your character
But as mentioned before, what you can/can't do with your backstory ultimately falls on your DM. There's no hard or fast rule, and it changes from game to game.
I'll try to figure out something it's intimidating
Virtually any backstory you create now will likely need to change at least a litte to fit the game you eventually play in. So don't sweat too much over doing it "wrong." Just make it however you see fit!
Just remember, planning things out with your DM is like collaborating on a story together. Both of you want your character to fit well in the world, and you just need to talk it out to decide how best to do that.
I'm gonna try talking to my dm again he's a nice person I'm sure he means well
My suggestion is to have a "just for you" version of your backstory. That way, even if you join a game and end up making changes into a new version, you still have that personal one to return to.
Anyone here have advice for coming up with a campaign?
Are you a completely new DM?
#dm-discussion is probably the best place for that, but my brief advice: don't try to make a campaign if you haven't DM'd before. If you still want to go for it, though, don't be afraid to steal from other sources. Know your ending (as in the climactic confrontation). And talk to your players to find out what they want.
I've done the lost mines of phandelver and a bit of tyranny of dragons but yeah kinda.
Does anyone know the best way to look for a group as a beginner?
Hello, can i as a wizard equip a shield ? I want to make a armored mountain dwarf wizard. Who served as a soldier.
Yes
You can equip and use almost anything
I read somewhere that i may interfere with casting components or something like that.
There's no one best way. Spread your net wide. Look at the server's channels starting with #find-a-game. Not everyone specifies they're beginner-friendly, so ask. Look into local options: game/hobby/comic stores, libraries, and school clubs.
Try using solder for background for proficiencies
I'm also looking for a group. I wanna DM
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
check their proficiencies, I do not believe that they are
if you don't have proficency, you wont be able to cast spells
Check dwarves and see if they have any proficencies
Wizards are not proficient with shields.
i get the armor as a dwarf but i was considering a feat that gives me a shield. But i dont know if i need a free had to do my wizard symbols and components
Outside of specific features, you generally need a free hand if a spell has somatic components.
you could do that, or if you wanted to get a shield earlier multiclassing is always an option
Let's keep things basic, per the intent of the channel
Oh yeah, my apologies
stuff like multiclassing goes beyond that and more into #character-discussion teritory
Gotcha 👍
Check warlock some of the spells happen at will
Warlock "at will" spells still require verbal and somatic components as appropriate, so having both your hands full would still interfere with them.
What I’ve been playing wrong
I have a bow and arrow
And use eldritch blast
With the bow drawn
You could hold the bow in one hand and cast the spell with the other with no issue. Two-handed weapons only require both hands while making a weapon attack.
Yeah but I made sure to draw the the bow
I thought the blast came out my mouth
And happened at will so no hands needed
I will continue to do so
How your Eldritch Blast manifests is entirely flavor and is up to you and your DM to nail down. Maybe it shoots from your hands, or your eyes, or from the tip of your Arcane Focus. Mechanically it doesn't affect anything, so long as you have a free hand to perform the somatic components.
I've talked to the dm and I feel a bit better
My dm apologized for being so pushy
My dm really is a good person I'm glad he's understanding
Yo
Communication is often what’s needed to resolve and prevent issues at the game table.
Glad it worked out for you lore.
Thank you I'm terrified of confrontation but he told me push backs ok.
It doesn’t always have to be confrontational.
During a session 0 I often have the group setup boundaries and have everyone speak about what they do and don’t want to see at the game table.
I'm glad everyone here is so kind and supportive
Im new to dnd and i wanna know like how to make charaters
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The handbooker helper series up above is a solid resource to learn about the different classes.
Dnd beyond also does a good job of explaining the different parts to a character during character creation.
Im trying to make a clown paladin
im sorta new here and i dont really know anything, rules, char creation and so on, can any one help?
same here pal
glad im not atlone at least
Links above can walk you through it.
If you scroll up a few messages, the bot post there has lots of very helpful links and resources to get you started
For talking character concepts, #character-discussion can help you with that.
do i need to memorize everything to lets say, start playing?
not really, no
As long as you understand your characters skill/powers you should be fine
everything else you can look in the book(s) for if you're struggling to remember them
And your DM should help out a lot just ask to do things and they will tell you what’s required
You can also make notecards to have as a quick reference
funnly enough i dont have those...
There are cheat sheets let me go find the link
The basic rules is free and more than enough.
A lot of the rules are freely available online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That’s a really solid cheat sheet 😀
I think I have a good grasp on the basics now
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources other useful stuff too
is there any modifiable char sheets for future games?
Here you go: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Thank you for that advice
I've have some wiggle room to flesh out my character now
How do I handle my aasimar Fighter character ?
What do you mean by handle?
Does your character exist or are you in the process of creation?
And following up on that, what are you having trouble with?
Created, have some room for editing since we haven't started officially playing (2 days left yay)
Well, we decided to have a pre game battle to "get used to things"
I died in round 2.....
So....
Level 1? How many other players? What were you fighting?
Play style and strategy varies depends on the character is created.
Party of 5 including me
1 Fighter, 2 bards, 1 wizard, 1 rogue
6 Kobolds
The party was at level 1?
Yes
Everyone is new and level 1
It might have been luck of the dice rather than anything you did or did not do. Level 1 is famously lethal because of how few hit points and abilities PCs have.
I do admit that I just rushed in while swinging my Longsword 🤣
Though there are some things you can do to be setup for success like attacking the same enemy.
Especially with the rouge so they can use sneak attack.
So is your character a strength based fighter?
Plus, if everyone is new, they may not have known how all their abilities/features worked. Not to say you need to be optimal at all times, but combat goes more smoothly when everyone contributes something.
How does a rogue use a sneak attack ? If you could give an example, it would be appreciated
Yes
Strength, Constitution, Intelligence (planning to become Eldritch knight if I survive)
“Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
You don’t need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn’t incapacitated, and you don’t have disadvantage on the attack roll.”
There's a question I'm not sure to ask here or in character discussion
Also, does magic missile never miss ? Should the modifier for spell casting be applied to damage of every spell ? Is there no limit to number of times you can cast a cantrip in a fight (like level spells) ?
So if you’re the fighter and attack the same enemy as a rouge, they can use sneak attack.
Shoot, and if need be, we'll direct you there.
When multi-classing a druid and a barbarian can you use rage then wild shape and keep the rage active?
That's more for #dnd-rules.
My dm said my character is too I forget the term but I think he was implying depressing of a character
So I was reading this thing about reactions and opportunity attacks
Do reactions use your turn in a round or not ? Like can you do an opportunity attack that costs a reaction if you have already used your turn before ?
He did change his mind and apologize after i talked to him
That's definitely more of a #character-discussion question since it's less about the basics and more about tailoring your character to fit a more particular vibe (as I understand your situation).
Some spells use your spell attack modifier to determine if you hit.
While other require the target to make a saving throw against a spell’s DC.
All spell will say if you roll to hit or enemy rolls a saving throw.
Magic missile didn't have both...
Neither roll to hit nor roll for saving throw
Magic missile is a special exception as it automatically deals damage unless the target uses the shield spell.
You don't add your spellcasting modifier to the damage of a spell unless it says (eg warlock with Agonising Blast).
You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.
Since it doesn't specify a saving throw or attack roll, it just hits. The common refrain is "Spells do what they say they do," so reading the spell description should make clear what happens.
But for weapon damage, I always add ability modifier?
You have one reaction per round. It can only be used when you have a feature or spell that specifically uses your reaction
Some things potentially trigger reactions on your turn; others trigger reactions on someone else’s turn
So I can potentially do two attacks in a round ?
Counterspell, for example, is a reaction spell triggered when you see someone else casts a spell. This may potentially occur on your turn
Not 2 attacks it’s a reaction
Opportunity attacks are triggered when someone in your reach leaves your reach; thats something that happens outside your turn (usually)
If you have a feature or scenario that grants you an attack as a reaction, such as an opp attack, yes
What is "ready" in list of available actions ?
you attack as normal on your turn
Enemy leaves your reach on their turn , you can make an opp attack if you havent otherwise used your reaction
These are alot of definitional questions that can be answered by reading the rules, so i have to ask, have you looked at the basic rules
Finally understood
I did
Felt some of the definitions lacking/ ambiguous
“ready” is an option for your action; it uses your reaction to (paraphrasing) “hold” an action or movement until a certain trigger
If you get stuck your DM would always be able to guide you too
DM is new too.....😅
Note that some features specifically say “on your turn”; if this is the case, you would not get to use them if you used “ready” to act outside your turn
Doesn’t hurt for everyone to read the rules
Oh ok so take it slow and try set out some small rules as you all learn them then.
Yes, what I'm curious about is if I should define that "certain trigger" when I take the ready action ?
Depends on the scenario you are in and if your DM will allow u to trigger at any point
Okay, so if it doesn't get triggered, I basically don't take any action ....makes sense
Unless something says you dont, such as the bonus action attack part of Two Weapon Fighting rule
Yes in a sense if the trigger don’t happen the action don’t happen
Note that if you Ready Cast a Spell that spell is actually spent, you burn that slot regardless if the trigger occurring
Unless the DM allows it
Oh
And it doesn't carry over to the next round ?
No if you miss an action that’s it
DnD has a lot of rules, but most of them don't actually matter to your character at every given moment. For example, the recently mentioned two weapon fighting rules, for if you're holding a sword in each hand. If you're using a big ol Greataxe, you won't ever need to care about that rule, so you don't need to devote time into learning it yet. Just focus on what your character can do, and read up on that.
Sad but okay
I agree learn your character first and the basic rules, if each in you group does that you’ll be fine
Read what i wrote carefully
Has what was said made sense your you still not sure? @main oyster
👍I was asking if the trigger reaction will still be valid for the next round for say a weapon attack ? Like if it carried over, I could get 2 actions in one round
But got the answer
Thank you
Got it got it
Thank you
😆
😆😆 cool ok
Is there a "playable" good/neutral dark elf race? Because I only saw "drow" which I don't want to pick as they are hated for their evil nature so it'll be kinda hard to walk around in town ?😅
[Yes, I'm playing aasimar rn but originally wanted a dark elf]
So there's no official good dark elf ?
It's true. Depending on the individual campaign, Drow might be treated like normal people. Best to reach out to your DM beforehand.
More like alignments are no longer tied to playable races.
Heck you can even play as goblins now.
They've phased that concept out in recent years.
😆 we thought it would be nice to role play and stick to our character details
And there's no "homebrew"
Depends on the game, each race may be treated differently
You could have a lawful good Drow but they would be disliked in cities due to their history
Yes, exactly. Kinda hard to deal with on my first game. And I would also need a backstory as to why I'm a lawful good drow when most others are evil
Again, I wouldn't worry about this too much if you haven't checked in with your DM.
Stuff like that you can build on
You can be neutral and only know how you got to the ‘meeting place’
Then build it up
Drist was also lawful good
Hmm
It wouldn’t be homebrew.
Any history would be determined by the setting of a campaign.
You have forgotten realms, ebberon, ravenloft, dragon lance.
Aight it's late so good night
Umm haven't read up on those yet
And you might not ever need to, depending on which setting your DM is running!
hey quick question is there a "castaway" background?
Not quite. For seafaring, the closest would be Sailor.
i see thanks
With your DM's permission, you can also build a custom background, though
ill use an already existing one

I believe so
I started my first ever session last week with some advice from here, and it went INCREDIBLE. I am now 600 euros in the ground spending money on cool shit and supplies to make more cool shit
I know this might be a dumb question but how do people play dnd with other people? Is there an app? Site? Through messages? Is it simply unplayable like this? I just want to knoww😭
Same bro
look up on the internet for local dnd groups / places, go there - if not look in the #find-a-game channel and you can play online through a site or game such as Tabletop Simulator, Roll20 or something else
Ty bro
considering you 2 are looking, make a group chat and you 2 should look for others and a DM (dungeon master)

You can play Adventure League while you search for a campaign group.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

how do I use the ability scores in character builder?
we can only do a minimum of 3 for each stat and it automatically sets every stat but one to 30
so it adds +10 to every roll
You choose either manual rolling, Standard Array, or Point Buy.
we did manual rolling
Um, no you don't get to go up to 30.
on the character sheet it says "30" with a roll boost of 10
20 is the max short of magic items or certain class features.
If you're rolling then you would roll 4d6 and drop the lowest. The most you can get is 20 (18 plus 2 from ASI).
You can't go above 20 without use of rare magic items or certain high level class features.
sent screenshots of hte issue in dms
not gonna respond to the dms?
Why did you manually type in "30"?
I did not manually type in 30
You typed in "10"?
yes
You typed in the wrong box.
and 12 on another stat
where am I supposed to
Ask #ddb-support because I'm going back to work. Sorry.
Yo
Yo yo
is there an online dice roller I can use that is fair and reliable
There is one built in DnD Beyond
is it fair?
dice rolls are normally coded on a basic randomization pattern dependent on the number needed for each side. It's as fair as random chance can be.
if by fair you mean 'if i roll a d20 there's a 5% chance of landing on any individual number' then yeah it should be up to par
@modest lava
1a) You can narrate/describe your attacks but gameplay-wise you're limited to what the rules, particularly what your class, says you can do.
1b) You can't cut off limbs unless the magic weapon or monster such as a hydra says you can.
1c) Only if the class feature or spell says you can.
2) Read the free Basic Rules

Is there any platform somewhere that let's you pay a monthly fee and have access to a fairly wide amount of the official rulebooks in digital format?
I don't believe so
Nope.
Hey, I'm looking for a group I could join but not sure how I would go about finding one, I plan to try my luck in the looking for players channel but was wondering if theres other ways that I could find an online DnD group to play with. I've dabbled in a few DnD campaigns before and enjoy listening to lore videos and just learning about this community and game. Thanks 🙂
Check #find-a-game
theres a few subreddits and facebook pages out there, you can also find games on Roll20
thanks man, I've actually had a look there already and sent a few messages to a couple of theads that would hopefully fit my schedule. But was just wondering if there were any good ways outwith that channel to find a group
Sounds good man I'll try my luck on roll 20 and browse reddit and facebook to see what I can find, thanks man

It's a common tool for folks here!

Ok
No, but I have the app and an account for it

Hey, I'm reading up on basic combat and spells, and I don't understand how cone AOEs work. For example https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/burning-hands has a range of a "15 foot cone", but what does that mean? Radius? Length? Diameter? And if it's something like diameter, how far away can it reach?
"A cone extends in a direction you choose from its point of origin. A cone's width at a given point along its length is equal to that point's distance from the point of origin. A cone's area of effect specifies its maximum length.
A cone's point of origin is not included in the cone's area of effect, unless you decide otherwise."
so it's a cone shape, going 15 feet along, and 15ft wide at the end, making a cone shape
so in the case of burning hands, it's a 15 diameter at the end of a 15"--
yeah, so is it radius?
it's not a radius, it's a cone
the end of a cone is a circle
so what happens in a vertical situation?
then it'd be like that but in every degree around
that's what a diameter is, but that does answer my question, thanks!
but yeah Cone, Cube, Sphere, Line, are all different things
a cone is one measurement, being X feet long, and at any point is as wide as it is long to there
a cube is X feet on each side
a sphere is X-foot radius
and a Line can be long and wide - usually 5-foot wide.
@topaz garnet mind helping me out with a character
honestly, sure, I don't have anything going on right now
but if something does come up I'd have to bail
Ok cool
Hi everybody ☺️

@novel jetty what's the difference between homebrew and regular dnd
Homebrew is kinda like house rules. Unofficial content that can be used with official DnD
So a bloodhunter would basically be a house made character
homebrew is like mods
Yeah, exactly
it's like modding skyrim to add a new skill and a tree of perks in it (those are skyrim's mechanics)
Yeah, bloodhunter is a homebrew class
Yes. It is a homebrew created by Matthew Mercer of Critical Role, a show sponsored by DnDBeyond.
Do any of you guys know a good yt video to get into dnd?
some of the links above include them. Handbooker Helper are some short tutorial videos on how some mechanics work
Thanks appreciate it
Hai! It’s nice to meet you all I’m extremely new and has never in my life played dnd is there a way where u can just give me a general run down of the rules?:]

Could anyone send a link to a video of a full dnd campaign in one session? I'm a first time DM and my players are also there for the first time
like, a oneshot?
Or sum similar
yeah, I would like that too
There are quite a few on the dndbeyond channel
out of interest, I generally play female characters on PC, but as a male for the ease of RP should I play a male character in tabletop D&D?
Nah, play what you want!
whatever is fun for you and your table is what works at the end of the day
All that matters is you’re enjoyment
So I just found a group to play dnd with, a feat is like a non race specific speciality right? Just something your character is good at?
Yep, pretty much, or like a small ability you can choose every 4th level instead of the ability score icrease if your DM uses feats
Also some of them are race specific, though those are less common
can some one here take a look at my char sheet to confirm if its ok?
Try asking in #character-discussion
Is backstory necessary or is it to spice character
It's not necessary to mechanically function, but when playing dnd you are playing a character, so who are they, why are they here, how did they get to this point in their life, did something bad happen, do they have friends and enemies from their past
It is heavily suggested, since most of the game is playing out a character, you want to give your character a life. If you just play fighter man as fighter man and all he does is fight, then you might get bored or even frustrated if others put more effort into their characters and have more spotlight shone upon them because their characters have more substance, ambitions, flaws, etc. Having things your character can relate to and connect with helps make D&D be a more fun experience.
Doesn't have to be super detailed, but it does help to start getting an idea of who your character is in the world. The game's the real thing, so you can always backfill it with details later as you get a better handle on things.
What does "45/55 RP/Combat" for game style mean?
Also what does totm mean
Ohh 45% roleplay 55% combat?
I don’t now for sure without full context but my educated guess for the first one is that roughly 55% of the game time is expected to be combat and the other 45% social interaction (and maybe exploration?)
Totm means theater of the mind
Basically, no battlemaps.
Likely means theater of the mind. So not providing a lot of maps or visual aids. It's all described
I was asking for people to help me get started not trying to recruit, the system in place is extremely unhelpful when I don't know the first thing about the game and just want to find a group or a solo dm to help me figure out the basics
They are helpful when you ask questions
It doesn’t make sense just to run a campaign just for you

Skim through the Basic Rules, check out the Handbooker Helper videos, get the notion of ability scores and proficiencies and subclasses. Maybe make up a starting character and share it in #character-discussion , get some feedback. Always ask questions.
After that, it's down to scouring #find-a-game or other options like Roll20 to try and find one that fits you.
I want the guy giving me powers as warlock to give me tasks to do while playing how do I make it happen
Do just ask the dm
You've got it! Talk to the DM beforehand to set expectations of how you'd like your patron to be interacting with you.
Got it
I'm not looking for an exclusive campaign but I appreciate the helpful pointers from both of you
Have you made a character yet?
I learnt alot of the mechanics just making a character
But do also discuss expectations, themes and tone with your DM regarding that. Patron requests can easily get proper horrorshow.
I started to but I didn't know how all the rules and everything work and when the handbook came in the mail it didn't really explain how starting skill points work that I saw
So i would first use the app it is streamlined
And very helpful
To make things easier you can make your character on dnd beyond.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Then would make one on paper
I have roll 20 but it's free form from what I can tell
Have you had a look at the races and classes?
Roll20 can have a bit of a learning curve.
My fist concern is starting skill points, and yea I'm thinking ab a half orc or a human paladin
First pick race
You can make your character on dnd beyond and use it with roll 20.
Then class
OK, and have you read up on ability scores?
I'm gonna be a human paladin first and I'll keep half orc on the roster
And no idk what those are
Here is the handbooker helper for paladin: https://youtu.be/GMsg3QskvtU?si=9sk3T6B5p5XD94jz
The series also covers the basics
Is there somewhere I can read about building a paladin instead of a video?
You got the handbook so just use that
I've created a character using DND Beyond, what now?
Go to Manage, Settings, set to public and share a link in #character-discussion !
Actually first, is it better to have character progression based on where you are in the story or based on XP? Was confused about that. What's more common?

That’s for your DM to decide
I feel milestone is more common, it's less accounting and more story-based. But your DM may vary, yes.
Ah alright
uh thx
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
thanks!
Sniff* it's even more beautiful than I'd imagined
although D&D beyond is amazing, i do suggest rolling your first character and keeping track of them on paper sheets. i personally feel D&D beyond holds your hand to such a degree that it removes most learning curves.
imo to be fair
I was talking about the paladin class 🥲 it's so good
its amazing
i normally play a rogue / warlock (roguelock?) but i made a couple paladins of torm. and the smite! that sweet sweet smite
"nyet! spell slot only for smite >:C"
🤣
I appreciate the warning about dnd beyond as well I want to understand what I'm doing going in but I still want to basically play dungeons and souls lmao
i have some class specific sheets that are helpful to new players if you dont mind me spamming your DM's
I would definitely appreciate tha
incoming spam!
I would not use rolled stats for a first chracter. standard array or point buy is a cleaner start as it avoids outliers
ok?
I think i politely disagree. But hey, your opinion is yours.
So if you have to beat 25 say, on a Dexterity check, would a natural 20 with no modifiers beat it?
Standard array is the most beginner friendly option, which is the purpose of the channel
No, critical hits only apply to attack rolls and death saving throws
i politely disagree. i feel that rolled stats are great for new people as it provides them a more typical set up, as most tables use rolled.
not to argue, just saying from my POV
Hello.
rolled stats can result in a horribly overpowered or thoroughly mediocre character - standard array is reliable
I don't think rolled stats are necessarily confusing, but if you're building characters before finding a game, they're less likely to be accepted
And definitely more swingy in my experience
I don't think there are any metrics on what "most tables use". But standard array is arguably the easiest and most basic method as it's literally just six numbers
i understand and repect your opinion
I'm a new DM and hosted my first session yesterday. I have....lots of questions.
Is this the right place to ask?
Hit us. Or if they're more complicated world building type things instead of basics, you might want #dm-discussion
Sure thing! Are they questions specifically about how to run your game? If so, check out #dm-discussion .
If they're questions about game mechanics you can ask here!
Nah, probably easy for you guys. I'm using Lost Mines of Phandelver starter set.
hey guys im making an artificer alchemist as my 2nd dnd character [i know its gunna be hard for me to learn but i got obsessed with the idea of roleplaying as a lizardfolk apothecary] however im not sure for level 1 profiencies what are the best tools to take.. for the profiencies im taking arcana and perception because i took Nature and Survival for Hunters Lore.
I'm hosting on Discord as well. What tools can I use as a newb to get everyone to "see" what's happening?
Those all sound great!
Because I was only intending to help everyone create characters to start, we are all new to D&D
what do you reccomend for my tools set for level one profiencies i was going to do Glassblowers tools because i could use it to make potion vials.
There's few options. You can just drop images in the discord channel, you can use a VTT like Roll20
Tools tend to mostly be for flavor, so pick whatever you think is cool. Herbalism Kit or Glassblowers Tools might be fun as an alchemist
Are you referring to a VTT?
but we finished quick enough with character creation and had plenty of time to do some role playing
YES!
Hi!, looking do available DM that can host campaign over Video for friends and I, first time player looking to play Wand & Wizards campaign😁😁😁
So I just cracked the book and off we went. Lots of laughs fighting goblins and stuff
Artificiers get Artisans Tools by default right?
But I had no real prep or experience in this
There are many VTTs, depending on your needs and budget.
owlbear.rodeo and Roll20 are free (Roll20 has a paid monthly sub for more features though)
Foundry has an one-time $50 license but it's feature-rich with community-made mods.
Yup. That's just the umbrella term for a number of different kinds of tools like Smith's Tools, Navigator's Tools, etc

Though if you already have a full group, your fastest option would likely be for someone to volunteer as the DM instead
@cobalt frigate which is the most....beginner friendly, IYO?
@timid locust in my current campaign [proper first campaign] im a level 10 Path Of The Giant Aarakocran Barbarian
owlbear.rodeo
Ask in #third-party for more details on it.
My DM have also been discussing playing a Changeling Gloomstalker Ranger. if full casting as a 2nd dnd character is too much for me
@cobalt frigate I'll check that out, thank you.
If you want something a little fancier, I think roll 20 isn't too bad either. But it is a bit more complicated
You can compare with the free versions and see what you might like
Definitely lookng for simple right now, @main fulcrum Even with the starter set, I'm scrambling, well, like a squirrel to look up info, character sheets, AC and lore lol
And everything else I don't know about
With that, I know I missed out on some things when it came to combat. Mind you, this was only goblins, and I'd not really got that they hide after attacking and stuff. Does that matter in the grand scheme? I mean, I want to play it right for the campaign and so everyone has a full experience.
I cant make my mind up on what 4 level 2 Artificer Infusions to take all i know is Homunculos Servant sounds good and useful
This would be a better question to ask in #character-discussion
But I don't want to overthink it, I guess
Sorry
Honestly, that probably helped your party survive the fight. That section is known for being fairly deadly
Interesting.
And I wouldn't worry about it too much. Minor things like that aren't going to ruin the experience
When the goblins start using hide and attack tactics later, you can say these are the smart ones
I got very positive feedback from my players on their first experience.
@timid locust OOOOOHHHH!!!! Good call!!
Totally using that
I forgot that Strahd had extra boss powers for half the final fight of Curse of Strahd. Things like that happen
My party definitely didn't mind
I’ve been running for over two years, and I still overlook things. So don’t worry about making mistakes—you always will. Just do your best to learn from them and remember that no one wins by getting it right. The point is to have a good time along the way.
My mind was a vortex, spinning about what I could do or have done or if I lessened the start because the fight was (in my opinion) much easier than I thought it should be.
I have so much to learn lol
It was easier than it would have been if the goblins were hiding. But that's not necessarily a bad thing
Personally, I've always thought that a lot of the official content is tuned too high for tier 1 characters (particularly level 1) unless they're expecting at least one person to die in each encounter. Which I do not find acceptable scaling.
And that's exactly what I didn't want to happen either. My players were already new and a couple were a little frustrated on the character building experience, so a character death might have disuaded them from returning
DMing is an ongoing process of learning. You never reach perfection. Which is cool but also frustrating sometimes.
Perhaps move this to #dm-discussion ?
Yeah. Level of deadliness is definitely a preference that varies between groups, but I think it's generally a good idea to error on the nicer side for newbies
Ok
whats up everyone, I am new to DND and would like to learn more about it. Not much of a player myself, but am more in it for the art and lore. I would like to do some illustrations and designs for my portfolio, but am not sure where to start with DND.

hi im new to dnd and i have my first game coming up and i need help preparing
do i have to read 1-4 when i know those things
That's for character creation. Know your character's class.
Don't have to memorize it but being familiar with the rules and where to find things will make your play experience better IMO
Good lord, 180 pages of lore about dnd, it's gonna be hard
I mean i have playd Rp gta so i think i know the basics and i have watches those videos
You don't need to memorize all of the rules. Just be familiar with them. You can reference it during play.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment
Chaotic Neutral. (CN) creatures follow their whims, holding their personal freedom above all else.
do i get off as a edge lord if i chose chaotic neutral
Players should know those rules too as they describe how various parts of the game interact.
okie
Hey all I'm new to DnD overall and our groups DM. Loving it so far. We're about to finish frozen sick and I'd love to do Curse of Strand next. Players are interested too. None of them have the haunted one background so wondering is the needed for the campaign or does it just have some interesting plot points if a player does? One of our players is fine using a different character if needed but I'd love to know of we can do without.
This would be best posted in #dm-discussion or even in the right channel inside #1029833015423143957
@echo kelp ok perfect thank you

how do i save my character sheet in roll20
Maybe this link can help: https://wiki.roll20.net/Character_Vault
(I don't use Roll20's character sheets so I don't actually know)
You need to be in a game to have a character sheet I believe.
hi
How many skill points does a level 1 character start with? Do you just free form them and try to be realistic or is there a rule set for it?
Are you on about ability scores or selecting skill proficiencies?
Idk both probably I just wanna know so I don't go over or under what I'm allowed
Well now I can't figure out how to create my character
The whole layout of the app changed
what do i do in the game😓😓
I have the handbook but I'm at work for a couple more hours and have to gts pretty quick after I get home
Are you on dndbeyond?

^ @inland tapir - check the free basic rules out, also check out YouTube/Twitch for D&D streams to watch. It can giev you a feel for the game and how it works.
I’m not familiar with the roll 20 character builder but go read the parts on ability scores in the basic rules again to see how many points you can allocate if using point buy
thx
Just started the game and it feels like everyones is speaking a different language pls help
Help with what? We'll need some specifics to help clarify things.
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
Well lets start with character building ig. I have the basics but how many weapons are enough for a lv.1 character and how many spells are enough for a lv1 wizard
Yes
Your class and background determines starting equipment, and your spellcasting feature tells you how many spells you get.
For example, a level 1 wizard:
has two 1st-level spell slots.
has 6 1st level spells written down in their spellbook.
can prepare an amount of spells from their spellbook, equal to their wizard level (1 in this case) + their Intelligence modifier. (preparing means you can cast it that day)
guys i havent played a single session but i have known dnd for like 3-5 months does that counts as experience or do i need to play a session to make it 3-5 months of experience
thats not lore
thats just the actual rules
potentially dumb question but.. how does level scaling work? (in terms of battle)
like how much added damage per level?
Spells can be upcast using higher level spell slots to do more damage.
Weapons don't scale in damage. You have to increase your Str/Dex modifier and try to hit more.
If you role a d20, you add any situational advantagesyou have, plus your stat modifier, plus your proficiency bonus if you’re proficient in said attack, right?
d20 + Proficiency Modifier (if you're proficient for weapons) + appropriate ability modifier
You don't add advantage.
Alr thanks g
Crazy
and how do I find out what S,V,M mean and what does the * on the spell component list mean?
The * means a specific material component is required. It's listed at the bottom of the spell description.
For example, the Augury spell requires:
- (specially marked sticks, bones, or similar tokens worth at least 25 gp)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/augury
got a similar link for how much damage each spell slot level does?
thats not how it works
different spells have different amounts of damage
its not based on spell level
then where's the number that says how much damage a spell does?
in the spell's description
You have to read the individual spell description.
got it
and some spells increase in damage when cast at higher levels - for example, burning hands starts at 3d6 damage for a 1st level slot, but the burning hands spell increases damage by 1d6 per level above 1st. So, you could think of it as the damage being an amount of d6's equal to (slot level + 2)
jeez, there's a lot of information at once lol
hallo
how do I play d&d?
I wanna know like how to get in, what to do while in and how do I make my character

So you can use the app dnd beyond to help make your character
oh okay
Easy to use and understand
I just answered one question lol
guess they liked the answer lol
wait hold up so how do I make my acc?
most of the time it aint get answered
I know this has probably said many times before, but playing BG3 really helped me start out. I was absolutely clueless how to play DnD, but got the basics from BG3. BG3 has many different rules than 5e, but then that can prompt you to get into the PHB (players handbook) and look stuff up. Or watch some YouTube vidoes on the differences
and when you're looking up 1 thing, you end up learning like 3 other things, and it just goes from there
Bruh I play with like half the rules you’re supposed to
like a account for the thing you told me to go to
also watching games online like Critical Role really helped me out
dnd & beyond right?
Like paladin or wizard or something
Yep
oh they told me hand to hand combat is for monks so im going monk
Fun times ahead
yeah that's when I learned about wtf homebrew was ha
most def
Yes sir
@summer sky when I say homebrew, that means rules/settings people make up on their own that may not be in the actual rules
like you could play 5 different games with 5 different DMs and have all the games be different rules. Something to think about
what is bg3?
Baldur's Gate 3
also on PC
that won GOTY right?
yeah
i got office pc bruh I cant run it
baldur's gate shouldnt of won..... god of war should......
but thats besides the point
that sucks you don't have PC
so I needa play baldurs gate to get the hang of it?
i thought with roll20 you could do it
you could also watch games online, that has helped me learn a lot too
like critical role is the most well known one, but there are quite a few
I’ve played both not really
I mean I havent played any but I just like god of war more
I feel like god of war just got that DAWGGG in em
Go to #non-dnd-topics
I started watching this, it's been fun so far.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcVoov2ilOfKNJevZ3mGkW6s7X2yxFtRE
ye mb getting off track
Curse of Stahd is a well known adventure module/setting
ill make sure to check that out later but how do I actually join a d&d game?
got to find one that lets you in
I'm still looking myself for a group. can be hard to find. I have kids though so been able to play a little bit
there's one spot to look...
and another...
https://www.reddit.com/r/lfg/
got to vet those though, don't just jump in. Make sure the "vibe" feels right
where would a good place to start out with a new group, be?
you can make your d&d group bruh
you got recruits that are easssyyyyy to mold
yes, my kids love it now. I have made Sundays mandatory DnD days haha
anything that says new players welcome
I posted some links right above your question to start looking
oh lol thanks, didn't see it
no worries!
do I do another account? it says that failed to verify account, so do I just do another one??
In what?
dnd and beyond
People in #ddb-support could help
ty
this has been a question for me as well. I'm in the same exact boat as you. As for me, if/when I DM first time, probably going to have to be some vetting. my main concern is a) I suck so bad players are miserable b)someone who knows way more comes in and basically takes over my game
yo is there a way I can do anotha method for my character online sheet
Hello
It depends on what your DM wants. If your DM is using Roll20 then you would use Roll20's character sheet.
Hi
Hi
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
click on "5th Edition Character Sheets" to download some
So ominous
@young steeple I opened the uhh character sheet tyrany of dragons
why there all this bull shit bruh 😭
i thought it was just numbers and letters
yeah same here. But I would let people know I suck very bad and make sure to set the bar low haha
I would say though putting the time and and just the desire alone to want to make it fun, you're ahead of the game (no pun intended)
What's the matter?
My first time playing i was dming and we were all new and it went south so fast
I've read a lot of advice saying it's good to start out with a premade adventure to get used to flow and structure and such
I got the starter/essentials kits, and both have a lot that is good for new players (IMO)
how so?
I've made like, 2 characters fully and i feel like they were... okay.
I've made a few too but still like need to "get it". I have to still follow tutorials. I do have a bad memory though
a sorcerer and a artificier (artificier was only technically an artificier due to the homebrew)
We were all awkward at role playing and were like is it ok do this and just flicking through the starter book
I've made a cleric and warlock
It’s fine tho the second game went way better
👍
I had a decent idea for a character that's be interesting/funny but idk how to implement it
You guys have a group to play with
Do clerics have to be the same/similar alignment to their deity? I wanna make a cleric that worships either Talona or Kelemvor next time I play dnd.
for my character name I asked alexa 5 times to give me 5 random letters from the alphabet and I got Ktdji
sounds cool ngl
If that is if you want
You can also have different alignments
my kids right now ha
W parent
my group's dm is sick and everyone else is kinda mia, and the dm said finding a new group was good
in the middle of an adventure, my 11 year old is DMing. She damn near killed me and my other kid lol. She went easy though and let us escape. She's legit
Do u guys think it would make sense that a neutral aligned char would worship a deity let alone an evil one?
Depends on your characters background
Like if they don’t care about anything and are hungry for power
Or they could be extremely good people but they need some power to save people
See how you can do anything
Ight thx
could even roll the "hungry for power" element into how a warlock came to be
my warlock may try and kill their patron in the end, who knows
i had a character idea where it was literally a dude who was a basic ass farmer who was kinda good at puzzle solving, but he kept getting put into positions where he was seen as the leader of the group despite wanting nothing to do with it, and he was kinda good at making makeshift weapons, so he was sort of the artificier of the group
I dig that
quite literally like
he could make throwing knives out of scrap metal
and that's about it
he had low health, no magic, no like, resistances, he was p much the group mascot
Iron man??
haha was thinking the same thing!
bro what factions even ARE THERE
character so difficult
I thought it was just points and attributes
because the big bad underestimated him and he saw a friend die and got mad and stabbed him with said friend's sword while he was turned away after the big bad spared him, saying he wasn't worth killing
You should go to #dnd-discussion
yeah there is so much it can be overwhelming. As I said before, I just had to dive in and start watching videos and reading PHB. Dungeon master's guide has a lot of good stuff too
