How do I get into d and d if no one I know plays and I’m brand new and not well versed
Read the basic rules, find a group to play with online or at a local game store
and don’t spam the same message 5 minutes apart
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Once you gain a domain spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.

Hello! I am joining my first D&D game this coming Saturday, and I’m having a bit of difficulty.
My DM has asked me to use the standard array for my character, which is a human rogue.
I’m looking for more of a thief build for this campaign.
Can I get some recommendations for my ability scores? I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, to be honest.
Welcome!
The Quick Build for a rogue suggests this:
First, Dexterity should be your highest ability score. Make Intelligence your next-highest if you want to excel at Investigation or plan to take up the Arcane Trickster archetype. Choose Charisma instead if you plan to emphasize deception and social interaction.
Hi! So I can try to help with your character creating, Standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 just for reference.
So Rogues rely on dexterity mainly so they can hide, lockpick and do all sorts of nimble things so I would say put the 15 there
Rogues are also skill monkeys, so I would recommend putting a 14 in wisdom because it is a very useful stat because of the skills and a lot of spells have wisdom saves
I would then recommend putting a 13 in Constitution because early levels are pretty squishy for rogues and getting hit isn't great so it buffs your HP
Now the rest is pretty much up to you for your character, but for a thief I would probably say
12 Charisma and 10 or 8 in str or int they are gonna be your dumpstats so either works to be lowest
But yeah, I honestly prefer Indecisive’s recommendation. 😛
I’d make DEX, WIS, and CON my top three.
In order of importance for rogues in my opinion
- Dexerity
- Wisdom
- Constitution
- Charisma
- Intelligence
- Strength
Then the rest in any order you prefer.
Although that list is very different if it is an arcane trickster
Wow! Thanks for the info! Really appreciate the quick response. One quick question, What is a “dumpstat”?
Your lowest stat
The stat that effects your character the least
So for wizards, they don't need to be strong so put lowest stat in strength
Barbarians don't need to be smart so dump intelligence
So on and so forth
Oh okay. Got ya. So each time I level up, I’d want to “dump” any given ability points to my lowest stat?
what is the best route for a druid?
No, by dump they mean don't put points in there in the first place
No, you’ve already dumped STR.
It’s in the trash.
No saving it.
Oh I see
No, so what I mean is you don't put any points into it
Aaa im new to here and to dnd in general but also scared to ask questions lmao
Got ya. Makes sense
You’d want to keep prioritizing your primary abilities, like DEX.
Buff what you are good at and let go what your bad at
Ability scores or subclass?
For strength, moon druid
Awesome. Thanks so much for the help. That has clarified a lot for me
subclass
Moon druid by a mile from my experience
okay cool
Moon does seem to be the most popular.
you can be an elemental so
But just to throw out another option: circle of wildfire is pretty neat.
Or circle of stars.
I love circle of wildfire but he said best so I give my honest opinion
I initially did an old fashioned straight roll down the line of each of my stays and my DM didn’t like the scores. He said that my scores were too good 😂😂
lol
im gonna be honest i just asked that for the server suggestions I want to really experience a campaign
I've had that before but he let me keep them, I had like 18, 17, 16, 17, 15, 11 and I rolled infront of everyone
Truth be told, though, the subclass I’d pick for druid (or any other class) all depends on the campaign.
Yeah
What’s the story we’re telling?
Power wise, moon druid by a mile
You want #find-a-game for that. But knock some numbers together, see how making a character works first. Practice is good.
Okay so creating character on dnd beyond, at part it says to choose either a component pack or an arcane focus. What exactly is the arcane focus? Creating a tiefling sorcerer if that means anything along with it.
A component pouch is various ingredients to flick about in spellcasting. A focus is a one-size-fits-all alternative. They do the same thing, it's just how you want to play it. Magic wand or pocket sand?
Either way, they’re both used to satisfy certain material components for spells.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#MaterialM
And neither can bypass a need for components that say they're consumed by the spell or have to cost at least some money
hey dumb question, what's the deal with fighter/ranger's Two-Weapon Fighting style? can't all characters already natively dual-wield light weapons without the modifier bonus on their offhand, or is that another little something that BG3 has rudely misled me about?
The TWF fighting style lets you add your modifier to the offhand
all ik is that i can make funny haha peasant railgun
You can

I mean, that's not a terrible place to start
As long as you're aware that not all the rules may exactly the same
i wanna be able to play dnd and be funny, ik rules change depending on the dm
and that i cant be chaotic evil ALL the time
For most groups, they'll prefer none of the time
Chaotic, sure, evil, most people don’t like evil characters
A lot of skits you'll see about dnd on YT are fine, so long as they stay on YT.
Most campaigns don't tend to wander into such territory as doing horrible things or going murder hobo
At it's core D&D is a cooperative based game.
So if someone makes a character that won't work with a team, it to defeat the purpose of playing a coop tabletop game.
If you're coming from BDG3, this can help.
murder hobo hehe

HOW DO I IMPORT A CHARACTER?
As you were reminded, use #ddb-avrae-commands to run the Avrae bot commands. Also check out the !helps command and run it in that channel.
Okay can you not see #ddb-avrae-commands? Go there.
Run the commands in that channel
If I'm correct sorcerers are the ones with the divine patrons right? or are those warlocks?
Oh boy
Divine patrons would be clerics, I suppose. Though they aren't usually called patrons since they just worship deities
Warlocks have patrons, but outside of Celestial warlocks, they're very rarely divine
simply read the class descriptions :P
Also, technically Clerics simply have faith in a domain. Xanathar's Guide has a note on not needing a deity, so you could theoretically do something like the power of friendship. That said, the god-faith cleric is a tried and true classic.

You can first start by checking out the basic rules for some basic comprehension of how the game functions
Then once you know the basics, you'd look for a game to both begin having your fun and get a better understanding all the while
Am I a bit dumb, or where do I find the rules about how critical hits even come into play?
Is it just on a max roll, or when?
It's recommended to know the basics before jumping into a game, so the game isn't stalled every so often to explain what attacks are, ability checks, saving throws, etc
Thanks!
Does baldurs gate help

broad strokes work, but some fine details are altered for videogame purposes
K good to know
such as jump and shove, or being able to cast two fireballs in a turn with quickened spell, and in general the illithid tadpole powers, are all BG3 specific
Thanks now I understand I can't mid max as much
you kinda can though, we've got the #optimization for minmaxing characters
Should I restart my d&d journey as a player or a dm?
I'm interested in becoming a dm (since I have this kinda goofy, maybe genius, maybe just plain stupid idea for a homebrew campaign) but I feel like I should y'know, experience the game itself for a bit
It's definitely helpful to play in a game before you start your own, but if you want to dm, go for it
homebrewing an entire campaign is a daunting task however, so it's certainly not the easy choice
If you do want to start by DMing, it's definitely doable, but I'd probably suggest trying prewritten stuff first
You definitely can, just not the same ways you do in bg3
I don’t understand what this is and how to find people’s to play with

Take a gander through the basic rules to get an idea of how the game works, and then there are instructions in #find-a-game to do its namesake
I do like making everything hard for myself though
it's often not even the fun kind of hard
Yeah, I know
I do make everything the not fun hard for myself
profuse crying
Good idea, a lot of the ideas I have for this campaign are uhh, reaally goofy, and maybe a bit too dumb
But I wanna make it, even if I never use it, I need it to exist
Even though the whole point of a campaign is to be uhh... played, by people
I guess it'll be a very interesting art project
Or I could get experienced enough to not make an unfun campaign, that's an option too
You could make a base draft of it now, and then continue building it as you get more experienced
yeah that's... probably the best idea
If you haven't read it yet, the dungeon masters guide has a LOT of good info on how to make a campaign
Even though I've never made one before lmao
Yeah, it is best though to play in a game or at the very least dm a few preset campaigns to get experience before trying to make an entire one from scratch
me omw to make good decisions
Hello, I am new to DND and I will mostly spectate chats

Hey guys, I forgot which class has Shapeshift, Charm, and Drain soul
Sorcerer or Warlock?
I've not actually heard of any spell that is called 'Drain soul'.
Shapechange is druid and wizard, and druids also get wildshape.
Charm Person is bard, druid, warlock, wizard, sorcer
there's mask of many faces for infinite disguise self, charm person, and soul cage on warlock tho
Ah, then that's probably it. I was also wondering if it was some of the Warlock invocations like polymorph.
ooh, sculptor of flesh is the one that lets you actually change flesh
hi im semi new to the dndbeyond site and i just subscribed to the master tier and i have bought 3 content packs in the master tier sub it said i can share the content packs with other players, how does this work?
Yeah so in a DnDBeyond campaign you can toggle "Content Sharing" - this allows everyone to share what they own on DnDBeyond with everyone else inside that campaign.
Please note that content sharing only works within that DnDBeyond campaign that has it enabled - so if players try and create characters outside of that campaign, they won't have access to shared content. They can only access it within the campaign.
Nope! The DM (owner of the campaign) can toggle it and also toggle what books are available for folks to read through - all character builder options are available though. The DM will just have to tell folks what's allowed or not in the character builder.
Ahha thanks for the help
If you have any issues (with DnDBeyond's tools or services), feel free to ask in #ddb-support - that's the DnDBeyond technical support channel
Will do
Hiya! I got some DND bits recently as a gift and would love to get into it more, I've played 2 sessions of a strahd campaign and have been reading over the rules online and in the kits etc I own. Just looking to familiarise myself with the game and hopefully be able to run my own campaigns some day :D
Sounds like you're already off to a good start. Are you the DM running CoS (Curse of Strahd) or a player in it?
I was a player in it but the group ended up closing after 2 sessions unfortunately :(
I had a lot of fun with it though and really wanna get stuck into a campaign
Yo ✌️
hello people
Well if wanting to ask basic questions on the game, this is the channel, and we can help suggest resources to getting started.
If already having a general idea, then #find-a-game will help give instructions on how to use the 'looking for' channels here to try and find an online game (Also a good idea to spread wider and look for other LFG discords, reddits and on platforms like roll20).
#character-discussion can help give more advice on character builds beyond the basics (asking how character creation works is best done in this channel).
And just chill in #dnd-discussion ! (or join in what ever hot topic of the hour is
)
Hello everyone
hello!
Does anyone know of any plans to start newbie friendly campaigns?
You can browse through #looking-for-players to see what's available.
Or check #find-a-game for more options.
Im trying to get into playing tabletop games like DnD, Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer. I’ve played a bit of og Baldurs Gate and am just starting BG3.
Well this server is just for D&D, so that's where your responses will be focused
Yea
Im most interested in DnD 🙂
I just get anxious playing it because like im not sure how to use my imagination. Im not used to tabletop rpgs. I know some lore for inspiration
I also recommend playing Adventures League, D&D’s community campaign, as games focused for character leveled 1-4 are beginner friendly.
You can ask for more details in #adventurers-league
Thank you for the info I’ll look into that as well
If it helps at all try thinking of it like you're listening to someone playing BG except you control a character.

Thanks alot
I guess I'll make "soul draining/crushing" an exclusive ability for incubus then
Like, yknow, have segs and drain their soup
Maybe I'll build a warlock wizard then
I was building someone with Magic Jar, Charm Person, Polymorph, and Soul Cage
"The right hand of a goddess whose patron was killed by a mere mortal. Stripped from his power now...." the rest will be decided while we're playing our campaign
hello everyone
hey
Where is a good place to get example builds?
What for, out of curiosity?
Hey! New to all this and don’t have any friends who are interested in it… what’s the best way of getting virtual games started or finding a group?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
The links above should be helpful. This server is just one place among many with LFG (looking for group/game) channels.
"Example builds" aren't really a common thing. Some people might document their hyper optimized builds for others, but as far as normal characters go, your build entirely depends on the character you want to play and their history and backstory and such.
Not to mention the setting of the world and the type of playstyle the table expects
That said, if you just wanted an example sheet to look at, or if you wanted to skip character creation and jump right in, there are a number of pre-made characters on D&D Beyond or on wizards.com.
Wanting to start a wizard character, any tips or suggestions to how to start?
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
Where would be the best place to get feedback on a 5e campaign setting? Interested in Humblewood and wanted to get some first hand feedback
If you want to discuss a pre-made third party setting like humblewood, #third-party would be the best channel for that
That's what I figured. Appreciate it
If you want to discuss your own custom made one, then #dm-world-building would be better
Playing my first online game tonight and have very little experience with dnd. Would anyone want to take a look at my character and help me with some pointers?
You can post a link to your character in #character-discussion and have it reviewed there
Anyone played Betrayal at Boulders gate
The board game?
Hello everyone! I’m entirely new to this sorta thing and I wanted to do a campaign with my brother possibly but I haven’t a single clue how anything works or whatever the heck anything is
I downloaded D&D beyond and that’s about as far as I’ve gotten

Are you going to be the DM or are you trying to find someone else to DM for the two of you?
Uhhhh, can the DM play or not really? I apologize for my possible million questions 😂
The DM is a different kind of player. But the DM playing the adventure as another PC is like if the referee were on a team: it's a conflict of interest.
I woulddd be the DM but I’m not sure if that breaks the rules of game
Hello????
OH! I understand
The DM runs the game and controls all the NPCs. They do not make their own player character and join the adventuring party the same way the players do. But you're still part of the game
Players and DM both need to be familiar with the rules of the game, at least in the general sense, but they have different responsibilities as Colossus points out. The DM selects and prepares an adventure, which means a lot of broad knowledge, while each player only needs to worry about what their particular character can do.
Hru guys??
Doing okay, thanks.
Oh! I get you! I wanted to keep the game private between the two of us, since we’re usually a familiar crowd!
But I get that! I appreciate that quite a bit, I was hoping to kinda play with him to get a grip on it, before I or him tried to play with anyone else
You can play one-on-one D&D (called duet play), but one person would be the DM and the other would be a player character.
Playing D&D with 1 player and 1 DM is tough, but not impossible. The game works best when you have 1 DM and about 4 or 5 players though
I was wondering if someone could explain dnd stats/classes to me since YouTube videos can’t explain everything to my tiny brain

Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
That's the one!
Strength and Constitution are self explanatory
Dexterity is agility, your aim, dodging, ability to balance and sneak and pickpocket
Intelligence is brainpower with facts and logic
Wisdom is attunement to the world and your senses, governing insight and perception
Charisma is your sense of self and social influence, also governing your social skills
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
A subclass provides further specialization within each class. Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class. This choice happens between 1st and 3rd level, depending on the class.
I see! How would that work per se? With one dm and one player? I assume I’d go off one of the free campaigns from the D&D beyond set up
That's the thing: most pre-written campaigns are built with 4 players and 1 DM in mind
A few independent creators have made some modules specifically for one player and one DM. See their site here: https://dndduet.com/
OH! Okay, thank you
I was about to reply to whatever message that was deleted but I respect the classic Starfire profile pic, Classic star is iconic I swearrrr
So I’m a little curious about the freedom, so whenever people wanna do something, or make a particular action, they roll a dice?
Well yes and no
Not always. The general recommendation is to have the player roll when there's a chance of failure and either result will push the story in a new/interesting direction.
If there's a chance of failure or success, and neither is guaranteed (such as pet the dog or shoot the moon) then a die roll is suitable. A dm is advised to only call for a roll when there's actually a chance it can go wrong or go right.
As exampled, shooting the moon, impossible. Flying via flapping arms, impossible. Failing to open basic unlocked door, no chance. Failing to order a drink, no chance.
Convincing the merchant to lower price by a small tad if you'll buy an extra pack of pitons and rope? Time to check.
Trying to swim across a harsh river? Time to check.
Rock climbing? Check is reasonable.
Did your character ever study this lore? Time to check.
I don’t know if you guys watch Critcrab but I’ve been watching his videos on these unsavory moments within the campaigns which isn’t the best but I’ve been sorta using it as a way to learn about it
I also apologize in advance for my questions, I always feel like there’s a limit or there’s a thing as “too many questions”
I'm only vaguely familiar with that creator. There's really no shortage of info about D&D, but that can also mean folks get overwhelmed or not know what are good behaviors and what aren't.
But this channel exists to point people in the right direction; so as long as the person is willing to do some work themselves, we like to help.
Of course! I’m extremely new like I’ve never once played in my life, so the questions may get extreme
The whole point of this channel is to answer people's questions. We are here to help because we enjoy doing it
Crit crab is horror stories so it’s a good way to learn what not to do during games
We like to show off how clever we are, you mean? 😉
I would probably have to watch an campaign too in order to get a grip kinda possibly
A few sessions, if that, is probably enough. A whole campaign is a big commitment and really not a necessary prereq to playing.
It probably won't hurt, though!
Though a lot of live play shows are really fun. If you find one you like, it may be hard to stop after just a few episodes
Oh my! Yeah, I’ve made a lot of OCs but when I was young I made them rather strong, and my father was like “That’s ridiculous, they’re too overpowered” and ever since then I’ve been a complete freak on trying to make them balanced to all hell😂
You might really enjoy D&D's approach, then.
D&D has very concrete rules about what you can and cannot do during character creation, so accidently making something too OP is not much of a risk
You kinda have to mess with the mechanics and go out of your way to become OP
Hi everyone ! Nice to meet you ! I’m a new player ! I’ve been interested in DND for a while now but haven’t took the courage to try to play it, it’s my first time here. I would like to know if one of you could help me to find a game/see if my character is okay
I’ve read the rules but English is my second language and I’m scared I’ve done things wrong

hello I am brand new to D&D and my son has been helping me create a Character.
Welcome!
I am in a program called IFriend where your family takes a student from another country going to the University near me and they do things with my family. They have been wanting to play D&D with me so I would like to learn so I can surprise them with my talent.
That's so wholesome. I'd start by taking a look at this thing over here.
Ah, well this is a good place to learn the basic of D&D, me personnel I am still kind of new to D&D, but the other people here can help you.

thank you so much

are there granades in this somewhere like if i wanted to sprint around lobbing medieval frags everywhere
Delayed blast fireball and magic stone come closest as far as I know
Or like chronurgy wizard spell beads
There’s also alchemist’s fire
Basically a molotov
sweet
Hello, I have a question: I've been reading the rules and it occurred me a situation that (though impossible) makes me think if it's correct or not, and it's that when you are creating your character, you have to roll 4 d6 dices for each one of your abilities and (if I'm not mistaken) sum up the 3 best ones, so if you were to be the luckiest person in the world, could you have 18 in every single ability (roll 3 times 6 in each ability)?
Yes that's possible but not likely.
Extremely unlikely
Thank you guys
I’m just trying to join a game Lmaooo no idea how though
Not impossible but unfeasable
So if you were to get to level 7, you will never need level-up points anymore, right?
I mean: when you level up, you get 2 points to put in your abilities
No
0.00000000098745% chance of get six 18s.
I can't remember how were called
That’s only at specific levels
Only at asis
Ability score increases/ASIs
Those are only at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19
(For most classes)
ah, ok
Fighters get more ASIs.
And Rogue
ASI is with class levels and not character levels.
So you could only increase abilities that, lets say, get boosted by the class or I'm mistaken?
How do I join a game?

I see, I'm reading again that part and I think now I understand: there are some features respective to the class that you can get everytime you level up, and some of those can increase ability scores, right?
Yes. Most of what you get from levelling up is new class features
Thank you, now I understand
It’s not like most CRPGs where levelling up just gives you points to allocate between stats and abilities
There are no skill points with 5E. You're either proficient with a skill or not.

is artificier a class?
Yep
Cheers
@smoky adder I saw it in spells page but cant see it in class election when making character
Yep.
how can I pick it do I have to buy something lol
I believe you get them in Tashas's Cauldron of Everything.
You can buy any artificer subclass, for like $2.
Unless I'm confusing it with Xanathar's/
Or if you’re in a campaign where it’s being shared, you could use it there.
im tryna be dwarf grenadier
There’s no official grenadier, but you could certainly describe things that way.
Artillerist could be a good choice for it.
You can get some solid builds from the free basic rules.
A half elf draconic sorcerer is one favorites.
thats what i was looking at on store page yee
Yep, a common saying you'll hear is "flavor is free".
This is where you use the mechanics of an ability or spell, but present it in a unique way that fits your aesthetic.
What game types are there?
hello
What do you mean?
Game styles
Like themes or settings?
The thing in #750812887697588356
Context helps...
Being new doesn’t 😭
Usually a game post mentiones the style the DM is going for, and if not you can always ask 😛
Though unsure what you mean by type/style here
do you guys have any tips and kinda how to play
Like role play heave
Or hack n slash

What do you mean by "asset"?
My character is a human (plain, I know) and they have two additions
the proficiency
And it says that the DM will decide which one is the one you play with
Where is this?
Proficiency bonus of humans
Are you referring to “human” and “variant human”?
I think so, yes
Variant human:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#HumanTraits
Ability Score Increase. Two different ability scores of your choice increase by 1.
Skills. You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice.
Feat. You gain one feat of your choice.
Non-variant human:
Ability Score Increase. Your ability scores each increase by 1.
Just think of those as 2 different races
Oh ok thank alot
You choose one or the other.
I see
Variant human is just an alternate rule for creating human characters.
Ahh neat
No, it's a special ability that you can choose for your character. These abilities vary wildly. A feat can let a wizard cast a small selection of cleric spells (wizards can't do that normally) or even let you heal people with delicious cooking.
ohh i just built a character blind
Where do the feat belong on the Character Sheet?
A class will give you class features, such as a Rogue getting Sneak Attack and Expertise, or a Fighter getting Action Surge and Second Wind.
They'll each eventually give you Ability Score Improvement.
The optional Feats rule lets you take a Feat, instead of the 2 stat points of an ASI.
A Feat can be stuff like the free Grappler, or some such as getting three skill proficiencies, getting two cantrips and the ability to, once a day, cast a (chosen during feat taking) 1st level spell, or even something like reducing nonmagical damage while wearing heavy armor.
You only get a feat at level 1 if you pick variant human as your race.
There are generally 3 types campaigns available:
-
Home Campaigns:
This is where you play a single ongoing adventure with the same DM and same group of players over the course of several sessions. This campaign can be more personalized with the group in regards to the overarching story, rules, and preferences. -
Community campaigns: Adventurers League
In this this you play single session adventures. Each adventure you'll play will often be run by a different DM and you'll often group up with different players. To keep the experience consistent, this is played strictly rules as written. You'll also get to bring the rewards from one AL adventure, to the next AL adventure. -
Community Campaign: West Marches
This is tends to be be a combination of both home campaigns and Adventurers League. In which You'll play single session adventures but with a story of the community's own design.
There are also play-by-post games. Typically preferred by people who like to write.
well my brain hurts but I think I got it
if i show you guys my sheet can you tell me if i did fine or need to make a new one?
Feel free to drop it in #character-discussion or #optimization
What feats are healing? Or related to medicine?
Healer feat
There's a... few?
Healer (use a healers kit for more effect)
Magic Initiate (Cleric / Druid) (lets you choose a spell that heals, like Goodberry or Cure Wounds or Healing Word)
Gift of the Metallic Dragon (Cure Wounds)
how do feats work?
"At certain levels, your class gives you the Ability Score Improvement feature. Using the optional feats rule, you can forgo taking that feature to take a feat of your choice instead. You can take each feat only once, unless the feat’s description says otherwise.
You must meet any prerequisite specified in a feat to take that feat. If you ever lose a feat’s prerequisite, you can’t use that feat until you regain the prerequisite."
what happens if you get a feat? do you just gain a better reputation?
reputation?
No, you just get the benefits of the feat
like Skilled is just, gain proficiency in three skills. you're proficient in those skills now.
sorry about being dense but what are the benefits of feats? are they just like you are proficient with different tools or subject like history arcana or persuasion?
The benefit of a feat is the effects of that feat.
Others give you new abilities.
For example, the feat "Skilled" gives you three skill proficiencies
"Magic Initiate" lets you pick two cantrips and a 1st level spell from a class list, you get those spells (the 1st level 1/day) and they use the class's appropriate spellcasting modifier.
Yeah they grant features
okay and if you level up you can get bonus's on skills instead of a feat?
They're a trade off between improving your scores or getting a feat
The other way around more
yeah
You can get a feat instead of an ability score improvement
when you get an asi, you can either boost some stats, or take a feat instead
It's a choice, basically
1: Improve one stat by 2 points, or two stats by 1 point each. (Basically, 2 points to put wherever)
2: Choose a new feature
You either get raw stats, or a new thing to do, such as having a bunch more languages and being able to use and decipher language ciphers.
oh okay thank you i was quite confused for, ages
That is really neat
For example, a barbarian will enjoy simply using the ASI to put their statistics high for the raw math of it. But there's also other neat ones, like great weapon master providing a (colloquially named:) "power attack" you can do and letting you get a bonus attack for downing or critting something
You only gain a good reputation if you do good things for people. Just like in real life. If you are nice and kind to multiple people they will like you. If you do the opposite you will earn a lot of enemies. Just like in real life.
There are no real "reputation" gameplay mechanics in the game. Feats are just gameplay mechanics.
okay
thanks i am trying to worldbuild so this is certainly helpful to learn about various mechanics
The only close to reputation was renown.
But no one really uses that.
#dm-world-building would be a better place to ask
is it allowed to get a feat from starter equipment?
You don't get a feat from starting equipment.
Oh ok, I chose the herbalism kit whoops
Though it should be noted that some of the backgrounds from the more recent books do come with feats.
Herbalism kit is equipment, not a feat. So if it pops up in starting equipment, then it means that you can choose to have that equipment at level 1.
New to 5e but not new to ttrpg's, I gotta run a campaign for a group of 11 yr Olds.

do you know if there are any games for newcomers
Quite a few of them are beginner friendly
I always point players to AL, which you can learn more about in #adventurers-league, because you get to play one shots and the adventures that are geared toward characters level 1 - 4 are quite beginner friendly.
what is AL
?al

Hi, my names Sarina I’m looking to get into a group for D&D that I can play through my iPhone, my availability is widely open.
Not sure where to start looking outside of finding myself here from searching online.
I used to play 3.0 as a teenager.
Thanks and sorry if this is in the wrong place somehow 🤷♀️

If you're not familiar with D&D 5th edition you brush up on the basics from the free basic rules.
As for games, you'll want to check out #looking-for-players .
Exposing personal information is against rule 3.1.1, fair warning before any mods get to you
Playing DnD on mobile might be complicated, especially if you plan on doing it with voice.
I mean that is literally her username.
At any rate, as long as they don't go sharing info that breaks the server rules I think we can move on.
Yall, could an improvised weapon potentially do a D8 worth of damage if they are proficient with it. Like fishing and a fishing rod
No.
You can’t be proficient with an improvised weapon, normally
And proficiency has its own bonuses
Which are not increases to damage die
If the DM thinks the improvised weapon is similar enough to a D8-damage weapon they could rule it as also doing a D8 of damage
If you want to be proficient with it, you could take the Tavern Brawler feat
A big stick for example, being used as a quarterstaff (that would deal a d8 if used with two hands)
Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the DM's option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ImprovisedWeapons
how many times can you use cantrips is it infinite?
As many times as you want.
okay thanks
So I'm very new and don't really know much about dnd but I'd like to get into it. My brother plays and has tried explaining it to me but he always confused me and I never really got anything he said. I don't really know where to start with trying to learn about dnd

I’m trying to figure some things out about dnd
Like I’ve played it and I like it but I wanna know about the different planes and character structures
And also like the monsters in it
If you'd just like to consume a bunch of lore, the Forgotten Realms Wiki is a pretty good source
Here's the page on the Forgotten Realm's multiverse system: The Great Wheel Cosmology (its a big read, and very complicated)
I am assuming you don't have the Dungeon Master's Guide, it has a more consumable chapter on the multiverse but I wouldn't buy it just for that
The free Basic Rules has some info.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-d-the-planes-of-existence
Yeh
Does it talk about like races you can chose from in it or is it just monsters you can find in dungeons
the Player's Handbook and Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse have most of the playable races
The Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual and Mordekainen's Monsters of the Multiverse have the monsters/NPCs
The Monster Manual is just monsters.
The Player's Handbook has a lot of the playable races. Additional ones can be found in supplemental books like Tasha's and Monsters of the Multiverse.
If you're just going to be a player and not a DM, then you don't need the DMG and MM.
Thank you both very much, my birthday is coming up soon so I know what to ask for
I might once I become more knowledgeable about how it works and plus I think the monsters are just kinda cool tbh😭
If you're just going to be a player don't read the monster statblocks. It's basically "cheating" in D&D
Good advice
Sometimes I wish I could go back to a time where I didn't know the super specific weaknesses of many creatures
Anyone here know what AL is

I'm kinda new to dnd and want to get into it more but nobody to play with. Is there any way to play online that doesn't require me to talk as I get nervous being on a call
some games offer pbp (play by post)
Im new to DND, and would like to play, but there’s no one in my town that plays it. Is there any place I can find online groups to join?
What's play by post mean 😅. Only played a few sessions before and they were irl. Do people post games and it's like a link that I join?
You type in a post of what you want to do, such as the group's private Discord server. This is very slow.
I'm not sure how that works exactly. I've downloaded the dnd beyond app and made my character already but in the campaigns section it says I need an invite. Do I just wait till a certain time or do I have to do something
Hello
Here is a good place to start with the find a game section
excited to learn dnd in this discordd
Someone has to send you a link to the campaign, click it, choose the character you join with, boom.
i gotta learn to make a character
dnd beyond has a thing where you can make characters pretty easily, plus its free!
Do links get sent in the find a game channel or just anywhere
Probably they'll be sent when the group is established and you are all in a server/group chat
O cool im thinking about making a barbarian dude or fighting class with like the cool gladiator mask with the holes in them
nice
Should I make a post in the find a game channel
hello
Play-by-post is a kind of game where you write instead of talk. Ideal for people who enjoy writing, are less confident with speaking or have a busy schedule.
lol its okay I'd be sad if I knew I was coming too lol
For what
ye
are you like brand spanking new? or did you play like a little something before hand?
if play a little something includes a carboard map with an ai as DM then yes
To try and find a group to play with either play by post or through dnd beyond
idk what counts and doesn't count so eh
Now im just trying to learn real dnd
I've never played a grain of sand of this game
and I got myself into one with my Christian group lol
now I just wanna make sure I don't flumb up stuff for them
and be a fine player
If you have read the introduction thingy for newbies you should go to #looking-for-players. I'm not sure if you understood but pbp is a type of game.
i joined mostly to learn and to play with real people instead of a ai
You can scroll through #looking-for-players to see if any posts there interest you first.
If not then you can always post in #find-a-game
You can make a post for that sure, go to #find-a-game to learn how to post and probably for that make a post in #750812887697588356
I've never seen a server have so many people in it, The statistics must be nuts
but yeah try and find one first
Id have to find a game that correlates with my school hourss
dang school
Anyone who is new should take a look at this.
yeah sucks for me
I'm sorry
im up at 2:01 AM trying to get work done 😔
also yeah the pinned messages here are nice
Actually i remember one dnd experience
i think me and my friend tried a star wars dnd
that sounds fun
wow you guys have a channel for that?
Yup
I probably tell it some other day in tales now since im just learning thats a chat
diggity dang
There's a channel for almost everything here dnd related
I cant decide whether to be a fighter or barbariann
DnD is huge then
also im relatively new so take most things i say with a grain of salt
thats what happens when you got a 50 year old game
Both classes seem cool
oh fair enough
fighter is more beginner friendly imo
Fighter it issss
1974 is when dnd first came out. 50 years to the year
happy birthday to DnD then
but also imo barbarian is more fun
do fighters get big axes
oh good question
yes they can
fighter it is
Ok
aren't monks that?
yeah
pretty much at least?
they punch real good

like FF1 monk punches?
Barbarians swing wildly
Fighters swing with precision
Monks punch stuff really hard
mhmm strong punch
but i want my guy to have precision
Hes gonna look like a dumb brawny guy but i want him to actually be well educated
I mean, that's just flavor wise.
Statistically fighter and barbarian are similar, only main difference is their features
quick question is there any like "psychologist" kinda background thing that I could do?
I would say the closest official background would be guild artisan, but I'm not too sure.
Of course, if you get with your DM (once you find a group), you could ask about making a custom background with them
ah I don't think my DM would enjoy that
I'll just be an archaeologist then
Oh, you already have a group?
yes indeed I do
you can do translating certain languages
I do that with characters I make in books
all i think about is just random names
that works too
barbarian named bob 😔
You could translate different languages, generate random names, or steal from your favorite franchises
Bob good old bob lol
yee
actually that sounds nice bob the barbarian
but ye i probably will translate things then
if you think bob is nice why change it?
Acolyte, Charlatan, Sage? Might need to swap a prof to get Insight.
Is it pretty easy to find a group who is welcoming to newcomers?
huh wow crap like that is insanely flexable huh?
It varies, but generally you can find people who are willing to help
those aren't what I'm looking for but maybeI can do something
o
o
there's some that aren't but a lot are
i cant send his name cuz its in thai
if they say they are then they are
Hin is stone in thai and ima add a random thingy at the end like an or something
Hinan maybee
table top role playing game?
Yeah
ah
Like Zero said, that's an option. Mine are slightly more geared towards the feature first, but you can swap the proficiencies for the ones you want- I'm guessing Investigation and Insight.
Though i do know his alignment, Neutral Good
Any tips for making a character?
nuts
I feel like I can just wild while creating my character so long as I don't flumb up stats and mechanics
First time?
You can do a lot but it’s DM dependant on what sort of stuff they allow
yknow im making my first character on dnd beyond
Kind of. I started making a character a couple years ago but the party ended up not working out so I never finished
Kind of wanted to start over
so, as long I stay within their bounds I'm good?
I feel i should kinda read the stuff i see but im kinda just scrolling through all information.
yeah reading is fun man lol
Is that like a website?
ye
mhm DnD beyond is
Have you got an idea about what kind of things you'd like to be doing in a game?
If your making a practise character stick to the basic stuff, when you find a game you work with a DM to craft a PC to fit their world
neat
I gotta talk with my DM more than
It's kind of hard to choose
Like it.
Hard to know what would have utility when you haven't played yet
stylish
all i have planned on his design is just hes tan and has the one gladiator mask with a buncha holes at the face
Is your character strong, smart, sneaky, suave, or several?
helmet just looks cool
I've been watching some campaigns on yt and it seems like some wisdom or persuasive mixed with some fighting
Strong and smart
im tryna search what the helmet is called
Ah i found the name its a murmillo helmet
A Cassis Crista
How about a ranger with a focus on melee, or a druid?
i dont really know how to draw him tho.
Funny, I was tied between ranger and rogue last time. Went with rogue and ended up not liking the character.
I think ranger is a good start.
I have a book I'll read up on the classes and races again. Thanks for answering my questions
oo mah god dnd has bird ppl
If we were looking for a group is there a channel best to look for one?
Also, does anyone ever stream their games on here?
#find-a-game , but make sure to scroll up and read the instructions carefully.
You making crane from kung fu panda😂
An aarakocra?
ye that
Now i need to add crane somewhere in his name.
Larcrane maybe
Minecraft content huh💀
Im on dnd beyond creating my dude
it literally has a box that says minecraft content and the other is rick and morty content
and theres a lion race 😱
They’re so coool
another quick question, for people who's played for a bit now, is it annoying to play with new players?
Not in my experience
All my newbies have been excited to learn and haven't caused any issues thus far 😎
NOICE but like what is something you maybe wished they knew before starting a session if there is even a thing at all
So, I currently don't have any problems with new players; they just haven't done any roleplay in general and only talked with me, not among themselves. When you lead a new group, be mindful of that. :))
Personally I enjoy teaching new players about DnD.
so I just need to roleplay for them and do it well got it (i've been doing that in disney anyway so HA take that roleplaying)
Read up on the Basic Rules, have a cheat sheet on hand, know your character's features and spells (if any). Plan your actions for the next combat turn in advance where you can and do not be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem dumb. Sometimes, "I want to get this guy to do this for us, how can I get that," is a perfectly fair and reasonable thing to ask (and it's way better than just saying "can I roll Persuasion?).
To know to let the DM in on your plans 😛
I had a player being all sneaky about a spell they wanted to use, and basically wasted 3 rounds for nothibg because turns out they didn't know how the spell worked
The DM is not an enemy, you don't need to try surprising them lol
Haha, then there's no 'problem' there, haha 😬
okay okay, I See I see,
all note worthy it would seem
I'll read the rule book (hooray more reading) and I'll think of questions too
and be specific
Don't worry about the whole thing, just try to hit the high points and have an idea of how the Contents page is laid out. You've got this.
okay
I can read it all I'm sure but I'll try to make mental and physical note of whats important
as long as my friends don't mind baring with me I think this should be fun
bear
almost done making my character
NOICE
ye
I'm proud of you idk if thats good or not but know this stranger you just met online is proud of you
What's a good race for the rogue class. I've got a tiefling rogue made already but wanting to make a few characters to see what I can do with different combinations
Any class and race combo will work well as long as you’re using the option to customise your racial ASIs
Duergar get invisibility and longer darkvision, which can be useful for a sneaky rogue
Though most races pretty much work with any class
For rogue I'd start looking at anything with darkvision.
earth genasi with pass without trace could be useful
Any tips for joining a campaign with no experience in dnd? ^^'

thank you 😭
And be patient. Not every DM responds immediately. Read any game advert twice and follow any instructions given. Number of times I've had to gently remind people of something that's already in the Help Wanted ad is too high.
Can I ask what you mean by cheat sheet? ^^'
A quick guide to common game features. Google DND cheat sheet, you'll see what I mean.
tysm!! ^^
Also, welcome to the server.
ty! 😄
Do the dungeon masters create our characters or do we create our characters? Or both?
two methods:
Primarily, and 99% often, you make your own character.
Sometimes maybe, for extremely new newcomers, a premade sheet might be useful to learn the mechanics before making a character you don't know how to make.
That said, I believe every adventure book, as well as basically every DM, will be expecting you to make your own character. If a DM wants specific characters making specific decisions in a specific story they might as well write a book
Pre-generated characters tend to be for introductory or convention games where the scenario is set and limited.
Hi ! Idk if you remember me, I sent yesterday my character's sheet and you told me to make some changes, I've done it like you said and I hope it's better now
And if someone else wants to give me tips, I'll take it gratefully !
And i haven't send it in the good channel, sorry i thought i was in the right one
You need to pick spells and equip weapons and armour
Thanks !
@unborn sail #character-discussion would be the more appropriate channel for sharing your character for feedback

Hello I’m interested on playing dnd and I’m also new;-;
If you are talking about your discord role, it is displaying as bard right now
Welcome! The bot post just above your message has some very helpful links to get you started! After you’ve taken a quick read through the rules, if you have any specific questions we are more than happy to help
Thank you!
I meant in DND beyond
Bard is a class, if you are making a characte it should be one of the class options you can pick on Beyond
unless you are looking somewhere else
OK I've worked it out, you're looking at the introductory demo on DnD Beyond - as it says, for the introductory demo adventure there are 5 classes available and Bard is not one of them
Yep
Can’t change that?
That's it then, Bard is no an option in the demo
oh
My bad, tysm
That’s not correct
Bards are part of the SRD/basic rules and can be played for free
talking about the demo from the Dyno bot: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Oh I see
So I'm still in the eternal search for games / groups
however since ive been running Dragons Of Stormwreck isle for my parnter for us to learn the game
It made me think what if we just made our own group as a newbie to the game and a newbie DM?
I just finished the demo, I’m def into DnD
Ive been trapped in game search hell for months now
I might have landed a game among freinds in real life recently
Just remember the demo is to get a little glimpse as to what DND could be like
Of course in a real game you'll have more exact control of making your character and what you say or what actions you take
Nothing local to me either im sure dnd dosent exist in the UK
Search geek retreat uk they normally have dnd nights
Ho ho ho, but it does. There's a club up the road from me, and that's not counting board game cafés and other meet-ups. Online is also a very viable option.
Geek Retreat nearest is 70km from me
the two closest "shops" are more card games and MTG
Hello! I am completely new to dnd and I'm starting a campaign from the starter set as a DM, are there any tips you all could give me?
Sounds like online might be the way to go for you. Got a microphone and a quiet space? You're halfway there already.
yeah put posts on LFG here and some other discords and been looking on roll20
nothing seems to land in the GMT weekend evening time slot
i was just thinking as I build a session in OwlBearRodeo for DOSWI whether to look at the problem a diffrent way
It can be a process. Best of luck to you.
1 Don’t stress. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
2 Tell your players the premise before they make characters. That way players can make a character that has a reason to save the princess/destroy the ring rather than being forced to follow the plot or avoiding it entirely.
3 Start in a small town. It makes things a lot less daunting if there’s few enough possible npcs that you can prepare some of them. Also saves you the trouble of coming up with big factions etc.
4 Your players are (most likely) here to play a game not tell a story. They will not act like normal reasonable people unless you make them.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
overprepare. your players will try everything, so be prepared for as much as possible. Also, realize that you can't escape improvisation. you'll have to think on the spot as a DM.
On combat: Make criticals fun, describe them in an exciting way. Also remember, you're not trying to "beat" the players. If someone gets resistance to fire damage from something (as an example) let them fight a fire based enemy. getting to use your class features to gain an advantage in the perfect situation feels amazing, so let the players do that. everyone deserves a chance in the spotlight.
you're telling a story with your players, not trying to win. remember that and you'll do great.
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
These are my general DM tips: #dnd-newcomers message
Searching the server for “dm tips” will also get you some good insights, if you haven’t done so already!
I'm new trying to join someone's campaign how should I go about this
talk to that person and ask if you can join. That's all there is to it
Cheers
how do I make a character sheet design thingy (help)
Are you asking how to make a character or how to design a character sheet in terms of its graphical look?
Kinda both actually, I'm very very new to DND. I have a character design but I don't know the names and looks of species and all of the classes and stuff
Fillable Character Sheet PDFs

What's the difference between adventure league and a regular campaign. Ease of coming and going?
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
Adventurers League lets you port the character to different tables, so a new DM and new players rather than a consistent group. I think the story is also consistent over the season, but the folks in #adventurers-league would know better, whereas a campaign could be unique if not following a pre-written adventure.
So my local shop does an adventures league. I dont even have a character fully complete. Would this be a good place to start or is it normally higher level characters?
I don’t know about where it starts level-wise, but I think AL can work very well as an intro if you have the opportunity. I’d check with the AL channels on the server to get more specific details!
For AL you can make a level 1 or level 5 character. Though if you’re new to dnd it’s recommended you start with a level 1 character.
Tier 1 games, single adventures for characters level 1 - 4, are very new player friendly.
Do I need to create a character and backstory before looking for a game or do I need to find one first because I've seen some things where the DM has to incorporate the backstory and character in the theme
I have a question
Generally making your characters backstory after you join a game works better
That way you can tie their backstory to the world you're playing in
What does make a sorcerer and a mage different?
Having loose ideas for your character is a good idea, but regardless you'll want to wait so that those concepts and the game you're playing align.
By mage, do you mean wizard?
And are you asking in terms of game mechanics or narrative/flavour?
Game mechanics
Sorcerers born with magic/have it in their blood, wizards learn it
Ohhhhh ok
Thanks
Mechanically
Wizards can learn a lot of spells which they store in their spellbook. Each day they can prepare a small number of these spells. This gives them a lot of options each day for their magical loadout
Sorcerers learn fewer spells and can't swap them out like wizards (they just know them). However, they can apply "metamagic" to their spells, allowing them to modify them on the fly. They also get more abilities not tied directly to their spells, such as the ability to fly or read minds or cause random surges of magic to happen
They fulfill similar roles, but a super simplified description is that Wizards have a lot of spell options for every occasion and Sorcerers have only a few spells but can power then up to make them stronger than usual
Wizard as a class is much more about being prepared for what you think might happen that adventuring day, whereas sorcerers are more about being ready to react and adapt on the fly
So, you might say, you used to be a noble knight but you were betrayed, you've had to flee your homeland and take a new identity to avoid being hunted down, now you put your skills to use as a travelling adventurer. That would likely be fine, it's quite general.
What you want to avoid is getting overly specific before your concept is approved by the DM.
@wild onyx yeah I've never played dnd before and I haven't made a story yet but I got the premise of what I wanted which is a character inspired by Inarius cause I've been playing diablk and the character idea just seemed cool
Diablo*
Pop over to #character-discussion and see if you can do the three sentence challenge. There may be a prize!
When I think of Wizards i think of a Pokémon trainer picking their team for the day, I'm sorry 😭
Hi evryone I have a strange question kinda I am trying to find a party that would like someone tagging along and writing music for the campaign instead of playing. Should I post in the regular looking for players channel?
It would probably be better to post that in #dnd-advertisements but if you want confirmation you can ask the moderators in #moderator-support
Okie!
Are you trying to find a game? Because #find-a-game is a channel not a bot command.

So how do I play

The bot post above has some great resources to get you started
Ok thanks man
I have a question about note taking. Is there a certain style that works best, or does each person have their own style kind of deal?
I only wish to be proficient and thorough
It is certainty a thing where everyone has their own style. I mean you just gotta make sure you get things down in a format you understand and doesn't distract too much from other things.
Preciate it
I only wished to be efficient in my note taking and, and inventory tracking for my first dnd session
If it's your first session.. i'd say don't worry about making mistakes. You are going to do that.. and that is okay. You will learn. If you are patient with yourself you'll end up having waaay more fun.
I'll keep it in mind, thank you
Hi im curious about getting more into D&D I only played baldur's gate dark alliance 1, what are some other things I should check out?

Can a cleric cast revivfy on a pc who failed three death saves?
Yes.
uh.. yeah that's what the spell if for.
They can't do it unless the person failed three.
And it has to be done within the next minute.
The PC would be dead after the third failed death saves.
It can be for npc too
remember the diamond to cast it :D
true true. the main thing is that the spell does specificy "dead". So casting it on a living creature.. whould just burn a spell slot.
Got it just wasn’t sure if it didn’t count for a PC to make it not op
If they're still making death saves, you can heal them to get them back up.
What if it’s like a war forge or smth?
Or make a medicine check to stabilize them.
Same thing. They don't work any differently than a human in that regard.
warforged are considerd living constructs. so.. should be the same deal
Thanks!
hi everyone
Welcome!

tnx ily
I'm new and looking for a DM
me too
I recommend looking in #looking-for-players and posting in #750812887697588356
Hey for an in person session, when playing is it recommended to use two sets of dice? Like, I’m just curious if from BG3 the whole, advantage rolls, is a real thing being able to roll two d20s and pick the better roll for a turn.
Yes that’s how advantage works if you want to have a few sets of dice go for it
I’ve normally got about 8 sets with me for IRL games
advantage is a real, and very important mechanic in D&D 5e. Having an additional set of dice can certainly make things easier and faster, but that's not required. You can always just roll the same d20 twice if you can remember what the first number was
Ahh okay cool thank you. Aaaaand to the dice stores I go!
Is it frowned upon for someone to change their character after the first few sessions?
Not really been enjoying playing my Rogue all that much and was thinking of switching to a different class
usually yes cause the idea is that everyone is playing a character that theyre invested in and stuff
but if youre a newcomer people are fine with it usually
if you can communicate properly with your table it doesnt have to be the worst thing
I recommend talking to your DM "Hey DM, I'm not having the most fun with my rogue may I switch" and just talking it over with them
And just let your party know why you switched and what you have now
My worry is that I switch to a different class and then I don't feel that class either
Maybe talk to the DM/table to get some ideas before committing to another class so you have some info to inform your decision?
I think it's fine to experiment, and D&D is supposed to be fun if you have extra free time you can check out places like Adventurers League to try out new classes
Adventurers League lets you completely rewrite your character if you want and stay at the same level so it's nice finding what you like and dislike
Thats how I found that I like Artificers and Rogues
It's just generally that I'm not enjoying the Rogue playstyle all that much and I think I'd be better suited with a Ranger
I'll definitely check that out
Then tell your DM that, communication is the #1 priority in D&D and most issues are resolved with that alone
I kinda knew that would be the answer, I just don't want to be a pain in the arse
Making a habit of it would probably be unwelcome, but I think most tables would also want everyone present to enjoy themselves.
Switching every other session can be annoying for the other players, doing it once and sometimes twice is fine
And rogue to ranger isn't a massive jump
Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated
Sometimes it can also be a matter of giving it time. I disliked bard when I tried it initially, but it grew on me after some extended play. It was adjusting to a new approach that had some growing pains.
Not saying you need to. Just a data point.
That is true and some classes aren't super fun at low levels
Like Artificers, I love them but man lvl 1 they suck
Yeah that has crossed my mind like do I just stick it out a bit but then there's another part of me that thinks we're going to run through loads of cool content and I'm not gonna be 100% with it
I like running level 1, but yeah, I'd say the classes don't distinguish themselves on the player side at low levels.
If your gut is telling you this isn't fun, go with it. (Plus, it could always be retconned back.)
It's up to you, but I don't think your party and DM would object to you wanting to have fun
Yup, and again it isn't that big of a jump in party roles. Not like being the only caster in a martial party then changing to barbarian cause they probably depended on the spellcaster
Thanks guys, great advice, much appreciated 👍
A bigger jump might ruffle a couple of feathers but again, nobody would object to you having fun
Hope you enjoy rangers, they are a lot of fun
Yeah it's just experimenting can be quite difficult in a game where your essentially committing to a character for a long period of time
If you aren't vibing with your current character, you should feel empowered to have them go off by themselves for a bit so you can play a different character
so i'm trying to find a group to play with do you know where i would do that?
Read (carefully) #find-a-game
thanks!
#looking-for-players is the channel of groups/DMs trying to find players for their games.
#750812887697588356 is where you'd use the bot command to create a post to say "hey I'm looking for a game"
#looking-for-community is other D&D servers that may have games available to join
And #paid-looking-for-game is where DMs advertise paid games they are running
Being proactive in your search can make a world of difference.
Remember that there are more players than DMs so it may take some time.
Oh and also look into Adventurers League, official organized D&D play, in your area.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. I'd recommend giving the free basic rules a skim and getting to know how to create a character sheet and how to make skill rolls, attack rolls, and saving throws. idk honestly

im trying to look for a DM but the channel for it won't let me type or message the channels what do I need to do?
Read carefully #find-a-game
thank you
Depend on your approach.
The least effective is simply making a post that you're looking for a DM and waiting for them to come you.
Which unfortunately some tend to do, even though there are always more players than DMs out there.
almost always it will take a while, but you can get lucky and find one quickly
if you look in lots of places at once you can find one faster
For best results, especially for new players, is reach out to people on discord, the dndbeyond forums, the roll20 forums, etc and play one shots.
As this does a few things.
- Helps you understand the mechanics of dnd
- Helps you discover what aspects of dnd you enjoy.
- Helps you learn what types of players and DMs you're compatible with.
how can I play with a bot or AI instead?
Do you know how I can play with a bot or AI instead?
is that even possible?
Baldurs gate 3 is probably the best
Not really, D&D is a TTRPG and is mostly done with humans instead of AI but Baldurs Gate 3 is the closest you can do with bots
thanks for helping
No worries hope you have fun
im gonna try to play baldurs gate 3 first before I play with a real human 😄
Alright cool, some mechanics are a little different but it's pretty much the same
I think solo adventures (they kind of play like a choose your own adventure but with a character sheet) feel a bit more like traditional D&D, but that’s just my experience.
how do I play a solo adventure? or where do I start?
D&D is a group collaborative game. Solo D&D is doable but it's closer to the "choose your adventure" books than D&D at the table.
This Ginny Di video explains it somewhat and links to a very popular solo resource in the description: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2nVilB8QeY
Hey, I'm considering picking up D&D for the first (real) time and starting a group of newbies, but I'm not sure if I should spend the money on the current rulebooks if new ones are coming out this year. Should I wait and save my money, is there some sort of weird upgrade scheme, or should I expect the books to come out and december and it not be worth my time?
(For reference, currently looking at this set deal as I'd like both the physical books and dndbeyond version for referencing https://dndstore.wizards.com/us/product/770152/dd-core-rulebook-gift-set-digital-plus-physical-bundle)
I recommend picking up the Players handbook at the very least
D&D 5e pretty much revolves around a standard set of rules and they don't change that often so I recommend picking up the players hand book at the very least for the main set of rules
You could play with just the free basic rules/SRD to start if you think you might want to switch to the new set when it comes out
Hello
hello
They haven't announced any sort of release date other than 2024 yet right?
Correct - no formal specific date has been announced yet.
5e is the current D&D system to play so picking up rulebooks would probably be a good idea. If you would rather you can always use the basic rules
Ok cool
My question is about the One D&D/Unearthed Arcana update and if it's worth it to just wait
The PHB is the main rule book all others aren't really needed they just add more content at your disposal
Players Handbook
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
Oh okay thanks
But you can start with just the free basic rules
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The new stuff is supposedly supposed to be backwards compatible with current 5e rules
We will see where it ends up
No current release date is known for One D&D and you have a new group starting so it would probably be best with the Players hand book or you can use the Basic rules if you're worried about wasting your money. One D&D should be compatible though like UndyingNoob said
Ok then I'm assuming that 5e means 5th edition right?
Yeah
Ok
Yeah, but it's not sensible (for me) to spend $170 on physical books that'll be outdated/wrong in possibly a few months
I guess if dndbeyond was updating people's digital copies for free then I'd buy at least the PHB there
Probably just pick up the Players Hand book then it's like $30
Again supposedly the current books will work with the new books - but yeah, we'll have to see how it shakes out.
Yeah, sounds like the best idea for me currently is to buy the phb digitally, see how we like the game, and then when the new books come out buy those in the set
I can justify $30 to see if we have fun with it
Good idea
If you really like the game you can get more but I think spending $30 on it just to test is a good idea
So I guess my last question is what's the content difference between the SRD and the basic rules?
Obv I can send my players some stuff when they need it but it'd be nice to know which they should have on hand for reference
PHB comes with more subclasses, feats, and a few not-SRD spells.
Really the subclasses and feats are probably the more impactful.
Having more subclasses is nice
So where the SRD only comes with one subclass for each class, the PHB has at least 3 per class.
No, I mean the basic rules like https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules vs https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/systems-reference-document
The free basic rules includes the SRD
Good to know, thanks!
So they are functionally the same but the DnDBeyond free basic rules comes with a few more goodies that they found were also free and WoTC allowed them to include (when DnDBeyond were not owned by D&D).
Ah, I see. I'll be sending them that then 👍
Thanks for everyone's help with this
Hey guys! Probably late with this considering the large increase you've had here since baldurs gate 3 release. I really liked the game and i would like to play dnd for real. Don't care if its online or face to face but i have no clue where to even start except getting dices and a players handbook (right? are there any good alternatives?). Please reply for any tips regarding what i should do, read, and how to get in contact with people who want to play! Thanks!
