Sorry if this is the wrong place to say this but I’m very new and haven’t played yet so I’m trying to find a group or campaign. can someone point me in the right direction?
So if I were to wildshape to steal or pickpocket I would have to use the animals respective dexterity modifier for the sleight of hand check?
Yes
same here I'm trying to find a group
I've definitely been playing druid wrong then 😬 I am circle of the underdzrk as that's one of the only free options and I use wildshape and the' still attack on the same turn idk if my dm knows this or if he's just allowing me to do this
#find-a-game has instructions for looking for games! 👍
Are there any utilities online on searching through all the available wildshapes a druid can have and sort by specific stats?
Like for example looking for reptiles with hands/feet with a high dexterity for pickpocketing
Closest I can think of is Beyond's monsters list https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters
it lets you search through by creature type (so beasts for a druid) and CR at the very least
For example, here's a search result for all beasts of CR 1/2 or lower from the basic rules
Ok cause seemingly flying snake would be the best option for pickpocketing due to the small size, it's ability to constrict/hold stuff, it's high dexterity, and the ability to fly away (and assuming the target is provoked an opportunity attack won't happen either) but the main problem with that is I can't utilize flyby as from my understanding I can't fly with it until level 8 unless I get my DM to okay it in non combat scenarios or via some sort of gliding
Well by the rules you cant even take the form of a creature that has a flying or swimming speed until appropriate level
So I'd have to ask to reflavour wildshapes to make being able to wildshape pickpocket + limiting myself to only using reptilian wildshape, like saying a small creature such as a weasel is an anole or something
Here's the thing - the DM needs to make sure the game is fun for everyone and having a player get an "easy win" button for stealing might make things too easy for the party, overly focus the spotlight on the character with that ability so that other players might start to feel left out or unneeded, and then just the overall game balance issues with being able to wildshape into whatever the player wants.
Oh I'm saying more along the lines of cosmetic functionality / flavor, like saying a rat is a iguana, with the stats and functionality being identical.
Oh yeah that should be fine - use the mechanics as written, but flavor it (describe it) as something else.
Yeah that's what I mean
Most folks don't have an issue with that.
Oh definitely
Plenty of times Ive reflavoured a rat as a squirrel or somehting that doesnt have a direct stat block, and given it something like a climbing speed and stuff like that 😛
Now, in a battle, can a wildshape act as a disguise? Like let's say an enemy is chasing a player character and they run around a corner and while they're not visible to the enemy they just turn into a different animal, would the enemy need to do a roll of some sort to tell that the player character turned into a wildshape or would they just not question it
Up to the DM but I would allow it. I remember in one game my character was flying around (via fly spell) being attacked by a dragon and my character polymorphed into a mosquito to dodge out of the way and try and not be noticeable.
Ok thought so, was just making sure that's a practical thing to ask
Now, how do disguise self / kit and wild shape work? If a wild shape reverts to human form does the human form retain the disguise
Personally I'd likely allow it too, though the success would depends on the enemy intelligence / their knowledge of the character / druids in general
Thought so
Do NPCs/PCs in lore understand the difference between spellcasters? Like a sorcerer, bard, wizard, cleric, druid (assuming they dont wildshape in front of them) etc?
Im so sorry for the vague question lmao but where can complete newbies like me get my footing into the world of dnd? I literally have no idea where to even start lol

That’s so helpful thank you
How do i teach newcomers to play? Any advice?
- Take it slow
- Don't worry about mistakes
- Explain what you're doing and why when it comes to things like attacks or saving throws
- Present questions as a list of options
- Explain what the consequences and outcomes of the players actions might be
Shoild i start with character creation or go with premades?
For example, if a player says they don't know what to do when facing a locked door, you can say "Well, you can attempt to use your strength to break the door down, or the Rogue player could use their lock picking tools to pick the lock. The Wizard player could also use one of their spells to blow the door open, or otherwise destroy it. However, remember that there are consequences for your actions; being quiet might take longer, but if there are enemies on the other side of the door, they'll be less likely to hear you"
I personally recommend pre-mades in a one shot
And then if the newcomers like D&D and want to come back for more, then go into character creation
For example, you could run a one-shot with premade characters as a prologue to whatever campaign you might end up running
Thankye
Can conjure animal summons pickpocket as they're controllable like a player?
I need help, I'm fairly new to the game having played a few one shots as a barbarian dwarf and now in a campaign as a Goliath druid. I've convinced friends (with 0 experience or knowledge on dnd) to play dnd with me being the dm and one of them wanted to play as a dragonborn sorcerer but I have no clue on any of the classes besides druid and barbarian. What would be some pointers I should give him for making his character
wdym by pointers? (english not first language)
do i need to first hit with dissonant whispers before the enemy needs a wis saving throw
a spell using a saving throw generally does not require an attack roll. So no
awesome ty!
Like any things I need to look out for, maybe certain spells to avoid or certain must pick spells stuff like that
I have no clue on how the sorcerer class works because it just looks like a wizard to me
They should be fine. Make sure they have at least on ranged damage cantrip and they have high CHA and CON. They can fill in the rest on their own. If they read and understand the features they will be fine
if i need to do a wisdom throw on a mimic with 13 wis (+1), what do i need to roll to save it?
When a spell requires a saving throw. You dont have to roll anything. The DM rolls a d20 for the monster and adds its save bonus. If the roll is higher than your spell save DC (featured on your sheet next to your spells) they succeed, otherwise they fail.
where do i see spell save on my mimic (as dm)
its the +1
So I need to roll above what?
so you (dm) roll a d20, add one, and see if it beats the players spell save DC (on their sheet)
no worries
Usually any saves work like this
If you roll under = fail
If you match the DC or go higher = success
do i use the arts and crafts channel to showcase a character sheet that i've made?
Like one you've designed, or one you've filled out?
Not a mod, but that certainly sounds arts and craftsy to me and D&D relevant. I was gonna suggest #character-discussion if it was just filled out and wanting feedback on the build.
well i want feedback on the design to see if im missing something, so ill go to the art chanel, thx
I'd suggest #dnd-arts-and-crafts if it is a just custom character sheet
And not any character info
Character discussion are more or a workshop place for your ideas for character and etc.
i see
Hope that helps
As a Cleric, should I ever spend my Feats on level up on raising strength if I use medium armour and have 14 dex? It seems like most of the weapons I'd want as a Cleric are Str based maces?
Your cantrips and spells are your main damage sources
I have class features which are adding additional damage to melee attacks?
What subclass of cleric
as a cleric casting toll the dead will almost always outdamage making attacks
so you don't need strength exept for if you want to (and your subclass is proficient) wear heavy armor
Death 💀
any music recommendations for dnd sessions?
That uses up a channel divinity as a death cleric your best off with toll the dead on 2 targets who are next to each other
My dnd sessions either use the official dnd background music on YouTube
Or we use music from video games we like
there is offical dnd music?
sick
Here’s an example of what we use for “official” dnd music: https://youtu.be/Jikm8CCRbdM
Bardify has a lot of different music for different circumstances
Are the gods in this game mostly just used for flavor, or do you ever have them as part of the actual gameplay? For example, my character just murdered a traveling merchant who worshipped Tyr, the god of justice. Should this have a negative impact on my player, like a curse or something? It's a solo play through so no DM.
I guess I could roll to see if this NPC was in good favor with Tyr, and if yes, maybe give myself a small debuff for a certain time period...
This channel is for discussing the basics, and solo play (given that's not how the game is designed to be played) is very much beyond the basics
You're probably better off asking in #dm-discussion
so solo play is welcome here?
If you have a question about server/channel rules, #moderator-support is the place to ask
Hey guys its ok for any kind of question like Looking for parties , Im really new in DnD and currently im In Spain and I really wanna play some or have friends to discuss about it
what do i need to know before i get into dnd and where do i learn it :D, i was struck by inspiration and curiosity and ended up here but i simply dont know enough to jump into it without feeling like id be hurting someone elses fun

Is solo play frowned upon or is it encouraged to learn both aspects?
Me want to play dnd
Hewwo, i am absolutely new to dnd
Me too
D&D is a cooperative group game (usually between a DM and 3-5 players). D&D isn't designed to be for solo play (you can find "Choose Your Own Adventure" type of adventures for solo play though).
We need someone to teach us
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
I want to play with absolutely no idea how to play
Okie
Read my post right above yours...
Brotha I know what you said I am not a goldfish
then why are you asking when he's already said how to get started?
The better response probably should have been “thanks”
its not entirely frowned upon, but most people call solo dnd just book writing, though there are many tools out there that make solo dnd easy and fun via oracles and such, my favorite tools for solo are MUNE, TSAT 1 and 2
Hey, im a new DM and i already own a Dragons of the Stormwrek Set, but noe i have a Budget of 65 bucks and i eant to get 1 andventure and 1 book, what would you recommend i buy?
The Player Handbook
For DM?
In order for source books:
Player's Handbook
Xanathera's Guide to Everything
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Monster Manual
Dungeon Master's Guide
For most adventures, you will also need the Monster Manual.
Yes.
Yes: it's got the most rules in it.
Are there more rules then in the core tule book?
Spelling no good
I've never done a full comparison, but yes. I wonder if there is a comparison somewhere...
If id only have onr book thatn the players handbook?
Like besides the stuff in the Set i already have
Generally, that's what people recommend. Though, I think if you are relying on the basic rules, then perhaps it is the Monster Manual you might want if you want to start running other pre-written adventures.
The PHB is the one book all players and DMs should get. It has the core playable races and classes. It covers all of the combat rules and spells.
The Basic Rules has most of the PHB stuff but not everything (it's doesn't have all of the sub-classes, for example).
Thanks
Hey as a new player, from experience if your joining solo which paid table top services or free ones do you see the most? to join in as a player?
The two I think are the most popular - roll20 and Foundry - probably won't require any expenditure for you as a player. The DM may have a subscription (Roll20) or will have bought the software (like with Foundry), and then this is shared to all players. I don't know of any where all the players need to pay out, unless they are sharing the burden of the subscription/purchases.
Sick, good to know :p was seeing all the looking for player options and was kinda clueless as theres a variety of campaigns and alot have different software

Ok I kinda got flamed for asking questions in discussion so thx
No worries
Hey guys, quick question. Using Tashas rules to give your race any ability score you want, is it always +2/+1 or do mountain dwarfs and half elfs get +2/+2?
worried about a +2/+2 powergame move by my players
just 4 mountain dwarf casters
It's just +2/+1
Hello all! I just had a question regarding dragonborn. I've read that they treat even enemies with respect/honor, but would a dragonborn consider an aberration deserving of respect?
If you use Tasha's rules then everyone can place the +2/+1 in whatever stats they want to
I'd say that's more of a lore or character question but it would be up to that individual Dragonborn. Not all Dragonborn behave the same way.
thanks! great help
you get to decide
Sounds good. Appreciate it!
I think I'll say no, because they don't fit within the natural order of things.
Happy to help!
🙂
That's awesome
what do i do now
You know the rules, more or less?
yes

So how do I start a game of D&D?
Are you a player or a DM?
yeah, that'll happen. my advice is to not get discouraged, and keep on trying to find a group that works for you. sometimes it can take some time to land on a good one (or land on one at all), and that's okay!
Not everyone is willing to do so, but if you become the DM, odds are good you'll find others who want to play fairly quickly.
If you can't find a dm, try to convince your friends to play with you. Or keep searching, sometimes it'll take a while

I have a question: If I'm new to D&D (bought Essential Kit to start with after BG3 hype), would it make more sense to get the Player's Handbook immediately after I'm through the Essential's Kit, or should I wait until the updated version comes out after the playtests?
Getting the 2014 5E PHB won't make it obsolete when the 2024 PHB comes out. No one is forcing you to get the 2024 version.
I get that, but if an updated edition is coming out relatively soon, might it not be better to just wait a little longer (i.e. use the free basic rules or simply the 64-page ruleset until then) and then go straight into the updated Player's Handbook?
Okay, thanks for the advice. Then I'll just do the starting content first and decide afterwards how I'll continue, might already be a lot closer to release by then anyway.
They're still doing testing so I don't think the 2024 PHB will be out until late next year (at the earliest... but no release date mentioned yet)
I have no idea what I am doing, but I want to learn

I really want to join a campaign, it's just I don't know where to look

You can ask here if you think it's a beginner-y question! if it's more about character build you are also welcome to use #character-discussion , or if it's about writing an adventure, #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building as appropriate
Thank @viral pelican it is both a beginner and character build question
feel free to ask here, you won't be annoying anyone.
So character discussion
Oh well im brand new and discord change a lot i can follow instructions but there are many language barriers/knowledge base prompts that Im getting a bit overwhelm
It's no problem!
This channel in particular, you can just go your pace and let me know if there's any language problems.
What's your character question?
How do you know is the correct character? I mean I saw the DnD beyond app is great but there are many things that i dont know whether to leave it or take it
Ah that's a fun question 🙂
Sorry i think im being vague
Do you mean: how do you know which class is right for you, or do you mean, once I have chosen a class, what is good for me to pick?
I’m new to dnd I’ve finally created my Character after a while but I don’t know how to join a campaign

Well I'm new so I'm guessing that is part of the game to find out, but like, flaws, bonds, alignments, etc i dont know usually videogames tells you want to do
Flaws, Bonds, Alignments and that...this can be a help for you finding your character, or you can make it up yourself.
Hello guys, I literally know nothing about D&D but I'm interested to learn more about this sort of game. But, how can I play online? Is this playable via discord, an app, on the server?
you can use roll20 to find games
@viral pelican thank you
thanks you I'll check this
Most games played online are using voice. Discord is popular, Roll20 has it built in.
What is the best way for someone new to get into DnD??
Have a read of the basic rules linked in the pinned comments
I read them, but now I still don't know where to start or how to actually get into DnD ^^'
Hey! Quick question for anyone whos played through dragons of stormwreck isle. How long is it to complete start to finish. Dming for the first time tmrw so im trying to gauge how im gonna pace it!
I haven't run it, but a few Reddit posts put it somewhere around 15 hours, give or take.
The pieces to get into D&D:
Know the rules.
Make a character.
Find a group (including a DM).
Then play.
The first three can be done in any order theoretically, though you stand a better chance of finding a group if you know the rules and how to make a character. Ideally, you should have character concepts so your eventual character fits the game the DM is running.
If you know the rules and the character-creation process, you now need to find a group. See #find-a-game for using the channels here for that.
But do I then look for players, DM or Community?
Players, right?

You’re looking for a DM
If I choose eldritch adept as a feat for a rogue, I cant choose the polymorph invocation right because it says it would use a spells slot and rogues dont have spell slots
If you were an arcane trickster rogue you could.
hi! im quite new to dnd, i have an idea for a character and am using the chracter builder but the advancement type confuses me?
What are you confused by specifically?
i sorta get the xp idea but i dont get the milestone advancement
Milestone is a level up happens when the group reaches particular story beats (or otherwise when the DM says so).
oh ok so a more leveled system then say getting too much xp accidently
It's less to keep track of, which is nice.
And there's no possibility of grinding. I feel like D&D doesn't lend itself to that anyway, but if a party wanted to, milestone actively prevents that.
Thats good to know
i got worried about that, just accidently getting too much xp and being overleved or smth
Your DM will tell you which method their game uses. If you don't have one yet, your character is essentially practice.
oh ok
Hellloooooooo

helloo
if i made my character on d&d beyond how do i get a pdf of the character sheet
damn wait this is confusing
so i tried the find a game thing but apparently ill need to already have a group i think? idk this is my first ever time
sick pfp
On the character sheet, next to their image on the top-left, you should see the "manage button", clicking on it opens up a side bar, scrolling down is the "export to pdf" button
lolll thanks
okayy thank U 🙏
No worries
I just recently got into dnd and I’m interested on some starting tips, I already got some of the player guides and dice and things
even a character sheet, but I think it needs some work
what should i do for these parts?
hey i bought 2 books on dnd beyond and they dissappered and says i have to pay for them again
it was supposed to send the image but its the backstory, allies, enemies organisation etc the note part
That would be better for #ddb-support
no, you can just reply to posts in #looking-for-players
okay
omg thank U
That is for expanding a characters background and character arc
Click “Manage” next to your character name, then you should see a PDF option in the side menu.
btw guys is it alright if my allies/backstory/enemies etc. parts are empty? i'm not entirely sure what to put there
They are for tracking character NPC-relations in the story
It’s probably fine, but that’s ultimately a question you should ask your DM.
I have a question
I am holding a three sided dice
With a 1 2 & 4 on it
What would you use this for
Dnd does not use a d3 for anything, but i suppose i have to ask:
Are you sure there isnt a fourth face?
nvm
Shaped like a pyramid, three numbers per face
Simplest explanation usually best
what’s a d4 for
thats a d4, when you roll it you read it by taking the number at the point
There are weapons, features or spells that call for d4(s) to be rolled.
Ok, thank you
so i sorta got my character down, should i save all the notes (bg and stuff) for when i join a campaign?
Sure but be prepared to create a new character when you join a campaign. The DM may have you start at a certain level, not allow certain playable races, and/or use a particular ability score generation (especially if you manually rolled).
ah ok
And you may need to tweek your background to fit his world
Thats why it may be better to avoid too many specifics
Example instead of “ my character spent 284 days in the temple of the fist located 5 miles south of Neverhamber” it would be easier to just say “my character spent time at a distant monastary”
i havent written a background yet cause im hoping that i can use them in a campaign soon and when i know the world ill fit them to that world
wait no i have a criminal background thing for my character but no backstory stuff
sorry everything is confusing
The background you select is, at the end of the day, just a collection of tool or skill proficiencies, and maybe some starting equipment
Dont feel like you are strictly bound by them, you can flavor them to whatver suits your needs
thats good to know

Hello there
i just made a post in the find a game section, how reliable is that?
It will take time, be patient
I'm just saying that's not an accurate description of a specific location
Hello! I have never played before but I have my character more or less figured out. I’d love to be apart of a campaign but not sure how to join one. I’m a little scared haha
#find-a-game , or ask around in your community. Social media is great for finding campaigns, and public spaces like libraries and DnD shops have people playing who might let you join. You will probably have to make a new character though
I was wondering how people get all the options for characters, my friend has like a ton of stuff for warlocks but i have basically nothing
In dndbeyond?
Yeah in dndbeyond
i bought premium but it still doesnt work
Thats because your friend have either bought everything.. Or has a friend who shared content through a campaign
Ohhh ok
premium doesnt unlock content
Darn
afaik
You are correct. There is no sub that unlocks all the content. You have to buy it through the marketplace

Which official books have more monsters besides the monster manual?
Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse has the most monsters since the Monster Manual
Then there are source books like Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, Eberron: Rising from the Last War, Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, and Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants
And almost every adventure features some new monsters
Are those official?

The bare minimum you need to play Dungeons and Dragons is simply to read the basic rules. It has everything you need to start playing aside from a group to play with^^
?new
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Ok Thanks!
how would one do running or parkour in dnd? just with acrobatics?
by running i mean either being chased or chasing
i see
I caught mention of the complications table, but I'm away from my books right now. Do any of the potential events allow for Acrobatics or Athletics or does it mostly look for Dex saves?
Yes, loads of complications will allow acrobatics/athletics
Gotcha, thanks.
This is getting beyond the scope of this channel and would be more suitable to #dm-discussion
Please remember that this channel is for discussing the basics of D&D; a good metric for if something counts as the basics is "is this in the Basic Rules?"
im moving from dndb to hand filled character sheets so no more auto math, i wanted to know how does the profiency modifier work?
like how do i calculate it
It's listed in the table for your class and is based on your characters overall level
ah i see
You add your proficiency bonus to any saving throw, ability check, or attack that you're proficient in, and it's also used to calculate saving throw DCs and spell casting bonuses
I have a question about what detect magic and counter spell might work on
Like can they work on magical in nature abilities? Like dragon breath
Or like if psychic speaking
Or druid animal form
Hii! Im completely new to DnD!
@open fiber So counterspell, as it says in the spells description, only works on spells (as they're being cast). Detect magic however reveals the presence of any magic. To know if something counts as magic for the purpose of detect magic, you can refer to this checklist:
Determining whether a game feature is magical is straightforward. Ask yourself these questions about the feature:
Is it a magic item?
Is it a spell? Or does it let you create the effects of a spell that’s mentioned in its description?
Is it a spell attack?
Is it fueled by the use of spell slots?
Does its description say it’s magical?
So if not a spell slot it’s not magic?
No, that's not what the list above says
That's what that list is for
Are paladin spells magic? Are magical ish character abilities magic
Yes, paladin spells are magic because they're spells, (point 2 above)
Does the origin of the power matter to count as magic
Keep it simple and refer to the list above
Or is everything that isn’t mechanical or natural magic
So any check on it is a yes?
You gave me a list with no real direction on what passes the threshold to make it a yes
- Is it a magic item?
- Is it a spell or let you reproduce the effects of a spell?
- Is it an attack that says "spell attack" in it, like "ranged spell attack" or "melee spell attack"?
- Is it an ability that doesn't cast a spell but requires spell slots to use, like the paladins divine smite ability
- Does the description say it's a magical ability?
If yes to any of those, it's mechanically magic which means abilities that interact with magic such as Detect Magic and Antimagic Field interact with it
If you answer no to all of them, it's not magic as far as the games mechanics go
So a breath weapon or psychic speaking isn’t magic
Not if it checks no to all those above points
Psionic Mind. You can telepathically speak to any creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You don’t need to share a language with the creature, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language.
As an example of a breath attack from a red dragon:
The dragon exhales fire in a x-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC xx Dexterity saving throw, taking xx fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
in looking at this feature, we can run it through the check list above and find it is not magical
Gem Flight. Starting at 5th level, you can use a bonus action to manifest spectral wings on your body. These wings last for 1 minute. For the duration, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed and can hover. Once you use this trait, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.
Gem Dragonborn racial abilities
Okay, so go through the checklist
- Magic item? No
- Spell? No. Reproduces a spell? No
- Spell attack? No
- Uses spell slots? No
- Says it's magical? No
Not magical
Same deal
- No
- No, no
- No
- No
- No
Survey says: not magic
So race abilities (and some feats) aren’t magic even if they do magical things
Some race abilities are magical
For example, some race abilities let you cast or reproduce spells
such as Tiefling or Yuan-Ti innate spells, as example
The trick is just to ask those five questions above
Don't try and look for a pattern such as "all race abilities are non-magical"
But if a race ability (this is just an example) let’s you cast 3 missiles of arcane origin, it’s not magic unless is says it casts magic missile
It's not magic unless it checks yes to one of those five questions
You can't just pick one question and go "it's not magic if it doesn't meet this one criteria"
There are five criteria
That ability could allow you to make a ranged spell attack (counts as magical) or say "you create three magical missiles of arcane origin" (magical again)
does exp retreat double my speed for 10 mins or is it something else
It grants your character a dash action for ten minutes.
With all the benefits and limitatios if they have any
When you cast the spell, you gain the benefits of the Dash action. You can also, while you're concentrating, using your bonus action to gain the benefits of the Dash action again on each following turn
The Dash action gives you additional movement equal to your speed
(we also have #dnd-rules for rules questions)
Short answer is, no it doesnt double the movement. Its something else. Its grants extra movement.
Does the aura from the druid's circle of the sheperd's Spiritual Totem move along the spirit if it's moved, or does it stay where it was originally summoned at?
It surrounds the spirit, and moves as the spirit moves
Hey guys on dnd beyond next to damage is the for example plus 5 hit/dc thing
What determines that plus whateve?#
Like I understand it's proficiency but how do I know what other state adds to that it doesn't say
So it's Proficiency plus whatever ability is being used for the attack/spell. If you are a rogue using a scimitar it would be + Dex modifier. If you are a wizard, your to hit and Spell save DC use your spell casting modifier (in a wizard's case. that is +INT)
For standard attacks with non finenesse weapons its +str
Unless its a ranged weapon. Ranged weapons use Dex
there should be strength based ranged weapons
Here they explain things for newbies?
Yes.
They're called "thrown weapons"
Javelins I believe are an example of thrown weapons
I believe the javelin is one.
Lionn ! 😛
Don't worry, I rarely win initiative in this server
fair enough I guess, but I really should've specified that I meant bows
Bows are Dex based weapons.
That said, in early editions there were composite bows that allowed you to add your Str mod to the damage. 5E kept things simple, especially weapons, for sake of use.
for simplicity sake, it would've only been too logical
Anyway, this channel is for new players to learn the game and not get into changing weapons properties.
im a level 2 ranger and i want talk to animals as one of my spells, what second spell should i pick
Hello Everyone just a quick question. As a first time player is it better to just get into a group and start playing or is it better if i get some knowledge off the game first?
It's great to get some knowledge beforehand so you know what to expect
There are lots of groups that welcome newcomers so if you know the basics and join a newcomer game, you can ask for clarification, help, etc...
Probably a good question for #optimization 🙂
alright
well a friend off mine already tried to help me with making a character and explaining to me a bit what i need to watch out for. do i have to go into looking for players chanell if i wanna look for a group?
Using tasha’s rules, Ranger gets speak with animals in your spell list at lv 3 and can cast it once per day for free
so what 2 spells do you reccomend
im making an gloom stalker assassain
I'd give the basic rules a quick read to get a good handle on what your character can do, what dice rolling is like, and how to play your turn during combat before hopping into a game blindly. There are certainly lots of DMs who can help you, but the less work you put into your fellow nerds, the better!
Yup you can look for a game in #looking-for-players, you can also post for yourself in #750812887697588356
thank you very much!
Specific build advice should go to #character-discussion
So i wanna get into dnd i have some friends to play with. Should i get the essentials kit?(i prefer it to the starter set cause you can make your own characters). Or should i just get some dice or something? What exactly do i need?
The essentials kit can be super helpful. I'd reccomend starting with the pinned messages thought before buying anything.
The only thing you need is the basic rules, which are free! Physical dice obviously feel much better, but you could also use a dice roller online to get what you need
Any tips how to create own campaing ,i have game master guide but i get a bit cofused
Perhaps start by going over to #dm-discussion and ask for advice there.
If you're very new, you may want to consider running a module like Lost Mines of Phandelver. It's designed for low level play and learning the game. You can definitely create your own world though!
thx
My grandma said that maybe she'll get me the essentials kit. I prefer having physical dice so im gonna get some anyway. Is it worth getting the essentials kit? Or should i get idk something else?
If you're going to be buying something for sure, the essentials kit is great!
Hey guys I'm new to this but I want to play dnd with my friends over discord, anyone have experience doing this and could offer some advice? Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask I ain't sure where else to bring this up
Sure thing! Plenty of games are run online nowadays. What questions did you have?
Perfect place to ask question!
Hi, I’m in the same situation as Junaidthegoat.
And I want to make my own race to play as.
You definitely can do that. The #homebrew would be the best place to talk about it and get some feedback.
What did you have in mind?
Ig first thing is like where should I start? I see like a ton of people use dnd beyond or roll20, stuff like that
A Zabrak race that is created from blood magic and alchemy to be a slave race but they go rogue and become nomads. They have weaker bodies but more magic and have some gift of athletics and acrobatics.
Sounds good, the DMG has lots of stuff in homebrewing races. You could also ask in #homebrew if you needed help
I also need help with getting into this as I’m completely blind and new to D&D
Check out all the pinned messages in this channel. There's a bunch of resources that can help you get started. Things like basic rules, how to play and how to find a game can all be found there.
Definitely check out the pinned messages. You can look for games here but you can also take a look on Roll20 or the D&D Beyond site.
Okay I will look into that
Hey so im completely new to this, i just woke up and said im gonna learn how to do this finally. I know some things but idk where to get started like joining a game and all that to help learn how to play the game, i need some wisdom
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Just started reading it but what do i do from there?
Yo i have a question where do i make my character sheet or do i need a dm for that 🫡
You can use the character sheets here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Or use DnDBeyond digital character sheets - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder (DnDBeyond also has a mobile app)
You can do it on DnD Beyond, or just print one out and use a piece of paper!
Best thing to do once you have an idea of the rules is to try to make a character.
ohh okey thanks
Just understand that unless you have a group to play with, consider any character builds as practice
And they might need to be tweaked to work with a specific DM or group.
Im new so im just trying first to see what i would like to play as
Thankss
To the character creation we go. That will last up to 3 business days
Hello are dnd sessios held on this server or
No games are hosted here.
Ohh okeyy so this an information discord . Do you know where here i can ask to be let in a campain or do i need to do something else

why dont spells i pick show up in the known spells (wizard)
yo is it possible to be a rogue thief thats a bird
An actual bird or just a bird-humanoid?
I think its called a kenku
Also aaracokra, or even owlin.
ok
You should make sure your DM allows those races in their campaign setting.
True im new so im just trying to make something for now 🫡
Heyy i have a question do i need to use applications for sheets or can i just write in my notes and search for information
Are you using D&D Beyond?
yes
The sheets just help organize the Player character information in a reasonable and usable way. But use whatever as long as it has the information and you understand where it is and how to use it.
Ohh okey ty sirr
Does anyone have a list of all the classes and what they do
Thanks
fighter - hit things a lot
monk - hit weaker but hit more
barbarian - hit things hard
paladin - hit things with magic
ranger - shoot things with magic
wizard - cast a lot of spells with less control
sorcerer - cast less spells but more control
warlock - cast few spells but always hit things with magic lasers
cleric - magic from a god
druid - turn into an animal and use magic
artificer - make magic items
bard - magic with music
rogue - sneak around and attack
most simple breakdowns that are highly generalized but do an okay job of capturing class archetypes
Wow
Question: Can i steal alot if im a rogue thief
YOU CAN BE MORE THEN ONE
yes
Hello
Sup
Anyone can steal things, so your class and subclass won't affect it much. Rogues do get Expertise though, which you can put in the "Sleight of Hand" skill to improve your ability to steal things.
Post your character link
Is it worth building a sheet before talking to a dm
Learn to create a character before you find a game so you understand how that's done but don't get too attached to it since the DM may ask you to create a new character.
Only if you buy it. The playable races found in the free Basic Rules are free.
Can i still play kenku if i dont buy it
You can homebrew it. That said, you should run that by your DM because they have not have/allow kenku in their campaign setting.
Thanks sir
thank u
Pardon me in case of bad english, sleepy brain + English is not my first language.
Probably a question that has been asked countless times already here and on other sites/media. But which books should one buy to get started as well as have material to dig further below the surface of the world of D&D in terms of lore.
Extra asking for books because I sorta understand texts better when I have a physical book I read them from than when I read it online.
You don't need to buy any books to get started. The Basic Rules are free, it has everything new players need to get started.

Don't worry about learning about lore since it'll be different with each DM's campaign setting.
Alright thank you ^^ will print these out….welp that’s gonna take some time, still thank you a lot
Can you play D&D here?
No but you can find games in #find-a-game
whats play-by-post?
The group plays by email or asynchronous text message in forums or a text communication tool (like Discord)
Could even play literally by sending postcards/letters via mail.
Carrier pigeons
Question about foundry, i dont have to buy it to be a player right?
i see a lot of people use it for campaigns and i just want to know for the future
Correct - only one person needs to buy it. Also you'll get better answers and support on the Foundry Discord server.
Ah tysm!
yup
if the dm has it,everyone else can use it for free
Thats good to know, was worried i had to buy
Just do you know,in the dnd world, the concept of paid dms and having to buy the vtt is verry common
so don't do a shocked pikachu face if one day you might have to buy something to get in a campaign
most of em are free thought
understandable
Okay but this channel is for answering new-to-D&D questions so please take the VTT discussion to #third-party-tools-archive or the Foundry VTT discord server
VTTs are not really this channels topic
ah sorry
so melee spell attacks and spells that make you make a melee attakc dont count as the "attack" action, right?
Casting a spell is the Casting a Spell action
Even if it makes you roll an attack, it is casting a spell
this is where we must distinguish between the Attack (note the upper case A) action and “an attack” (note lower case)
a spell such as Guiding Bolt, which calls for a ranged spell attack is still a spell and requires taking the “Cast A Spell” Action, not the Attack Action
However certain features, rules or spells will affect “an attack”
For example, critical hits when you roll a natural 20.
Because Guiding Bolt is a ranged spell “attack”, it qualifies for a critical hit if u roll a 20. Roll double the dice
ok ty
Am I reading Succubus stats right does it say they can insta kill with draining kiss?
Only if the target creature hits 0 HP. But this kind of questions is more of a DM question and less a new to D&D player question.
I've always been interested in DND, but BG3 is what finally pushed me into trying to learn it. I just ordered the guidebook rulebook thing along with dice, but I'm curious; as someone who's never played before, would this discord server be a good place to find a group who's willing to kind of help navigate a new player like me?
Since I don't have a group to play in person
There are plenty of folks searching for groups here, so it’s a good option. But you should also cast a wide net and use multiple avenues.
Like other discord servers?
Sure, among other sites.
what sites would you recommend?

I was just given a Wrath Of Ashardalon set by my friend with a 2014 starter kit. This will be my first experience since none of my friends wants to attempt play D&D with me. Again I’ve never played D&D and I’m quiet confused by the many pieces in this box. Are all the pieces required for the 1 player Adventure
Wrath of Ashardalon is apparently a board game suitable for 1-5 players. That’s very different from the 2014 starter set, which is an adventure and the necessary rules for a short campaign for 4-7 players (on top of requiring a DM).
When people talk about playing D&D, they’re usually referring to the tabletop RPG, which is less a board game and more of a shared storytelling experience.
This server—including this channel—focuses on the tabletop RPG, not the board games. I did find this playlist of videos to help you navigate what’s in the Ashardalon box. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE1BC6059D34FADF4
You might be able to get more discussion over in #dnd-discussion (unless a mod says otherwise).
Appreciate it!
So total newcomer to D&D but I wanted to run my OC character from my novel as a class in a campaign. Any advice tips. She is an investigator, who wields a magical flintlock. Any ideas on how to close to this within the common rules of the game!?
hello other newcomers
That’s more for #character-discussion!
I'll head that way thanks!!

How does customizing a origin work?
Like the custom origin race?
Apparently in Tasha cauldron of everything there's something about customizing a origin where you can modify a pre existing race or something to fit a backstory or something
Yep, what part of it are you struggling to understand?
What am I allowed to change with it?
Would it just be the racial ASI assuming there's a convincing background reason to have a different ASI
Well ASI is changeable anyway by Tasha’s rules
Have a read of those rules for what you’re able to customise
So from what I'm reading I can change their racial skill improvement, proficiencies, starting gear, and sometimes even a feat via a custom lineage?
Yeah, basically it’s build-a-race
If I were to do it to modify a pre existing race, lizardfolk, to fit my character will I still retain the racial abilities it normally has like natural armor (since they're a druid and don't like armor)

You’d keep anything you don’t change under those rules, yes.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Ok
I have played before
And since Natural Armor isn’t something you could change under those rules, you basically have to keep it.
I'm still new tho lol, so I appreciate it
What does the starting feat replace? Or do they just get it for being custom lineage
Ohh
For lizardfolk, you could swap the ASI, the language, and Hunter’s Lore.
You could in theory create a custom lineage and call it a lizardfolk, but you’d still get only the custom lineage abilities.
Instead of choosing one of the game’s races for your character at 1st level, you can use the following traits to represent your character’s lineage, giving you full control over how your character’s origin shaped them:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tcoe/character-options#CustomLineage
So if you wanted to play a potato race, you could build that race using custom lineage.
When i use a concentration spell, does using any other spell break concentration or does only a concentration spell break concentration. Like could I conjure animals then wildshape into one of them?
Only a concentration spell
So I've been wanting to play DnD for ages, like literal years, and today I decided to pull the trigger and I'm so confused and overwhelmed. Also very bad at math 😅
The point of concentration is that you can only have one such spell active.
Concentration spells have persistent effects that last (usuallt) longer than a turn and significantly impact the battle. Limiting the caster to 1 at a time is a balancing mechanic
Your phone has a calculator built into it. And there are plenty of digital ways to roll dice that add for you
the math is simple addition
Start here with these materials

Ok thought so, just making sure. Cause it would be silly to conjure 8 flying snakes then wildshape into one of them, kind of like doing mirror image but more druidic
You can do that
Wild shape is not a concentration spell. You can maintain concentration while wildshaped, its literally written into the feature:
You can't cast spells, and your ability to speak or take any action that requires hands is limited to the capabilities of your beast form. Transforming doesn't break your concentration on a spell you've already cast, however, or prevent you from taking actions that are part of a spell, such as Call Lightning, that you've already cast.
Wildshape is a class feature, not a spell
For inputting ability score onto the sheet, do I input the rolled ability score + the racial bonus in the small slot, and then the modifier at the big slot?
thats entirely up to you
Most people do it the other way around but that works
Where do I specify in the character sheet that my racial stat bonus due to a customized origin is different than usual?
You don’t need to
Oh okay :3
Hi, I'm new to DND and I made this character with a homebrew race I found cool any thoughts on what I could improve? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/7chisma_106912276.pdf
Prbably should head over to #character-discussion but be strongly advised that homebrew races may not be legal at every table, and as a new player its better to stick to a standard race
Me and most of my friends have never played D&D before, yet we’re all really wanting to play together. There’s one of us who used to play however he’s not a DM and doesn’t know anyone who is. So me, someone who’s never played before and the only experience I have with DND is Critical Role and Baldurs Gate 3, sort of volunteered to be the one to attempt at DMing. Is this wrong? I’m scared I’m going to do bad and ruin it for everyone.
Ok thanks!
hello !!! whelp I'm not new to DND, but i haven't played too much, since in my home country DND is more like a niche tabletop game. so well let see what i can find in here, i had experience playing DND online with other players through discord; but time and responsibilities has taken its toll. thank you very much.
Can a custom origin ASI be a +3? or does it have to be a +2 +1 / +1 +1 +1, what are the limitations?
You cannot stack ASI improvements in the same stat
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything: Customising Your Origin - Ability Score Increases
If you gain more than one increase, you can’t apply those increases to the same ability score, and you can’t increase a score above 20.
You also wouldn't be able to split a +2/+1 into a +1/+1/+1
Ok so it's purely a +2 and +1 okay
Some races give the option of +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1
Customising your origin from Tasha's only gives you the option of +2/+1
Plenty of people have DMed for their first time playing, it’s totally doable
It's how I started
can you be a lizard person and a druid ?
There is nothing stopping you from being a lizardfolk Druid
okay its because i love their design ! and i love how they act
thats why i love dnd but i neverplayed ever

yo uhm, i actually did a campaign once but the end was so akward i didn't want to play again
Unfortunate - D&D is supposed to be fun. It's a game after all. But sometimes things don't work out as expected.
no like, the end was so funny but i stopped cuz i thought it was awkward
But the fact you didn't want to play again suggests it wasn't fun for you.
i needed to calm down a bit, beczuse i literally rizzed up the villain of our campaign at the end and i was so embarassed lol
i feel somethings wrong...
It's indeed quite hard to end a campaign satisfyingly, when players are free to do what they want. Plus, one of the most popular beginner campaigns Lost Mine of Phandelver (an excellent campaign otherwise) has a very underwhelming ending unless the DM zhoosh's it up a bit
does fighter class start with any spells??
No, it doesn't
ok
There are some subclasses (which you choose at 3rd level) that grant access to spells, such as the Eldritch Knight
but the core fighter class does not grant spells
ok thank you!

This is my list of general DM tips: #dnd-newcomers message
There's a ton of advice out there. My personal favorites are Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube (meant for new DMs), Sly Flourish's books/blog, and blogs by the Alexandrian and the Angry GM.
The Fighter class normally grants access to no spells, except through certain subclasses.
If your DM agrees to use the optional feat rules, there are feats that grant access to certain spells.
If you need a fighter with spells at Lvl 1, you might ask about Variant human, and take a feat like eldritch adept, fey touched, magic initiate, shadow-touched, Strixhaven initiate, telepathic, or telekinetic.
There might be other magic feats too.
Or you could consider playing a Paladin, which is very simialr to a fighter, but gains spellcasting at level 2
Not really but lulls in conversation are natural and normal.

Uhh hey how long does it need to be in the background?
I don't understand your question
Hello
Will I make my background or the DM make my background?
You get to choose your background as part of character creation
I'm totally confused
Players make their own characters
so the character creation process is yours to control
(to some extent)
I can choose... Does that mean I don't have to make my background
Your character probably came from somewhere, so everyone has a background
Creating a custom background is one option. There is also a list you can pick from
Oh god thats gonna save me a lot of time
What were they doing before becoming an adventurer? Were they a soldier? A thief? A noble's child?
@lyric fjord when you are saying background do you mean backstory? Like a little story of where your character came from, or why they are adventuring? Because Background and Backstory are 2 different things
Yup it is
You can find the list here: Basic Rules: Background Options
Oh thank you that's gonna save me a lot of time I've been making my character since yesterday : |
well, a backstory is usually made by the player (unless the game is using pre-made characters) Honestly, the length depends on how your DM and your table want them to be. I personally like to pull from my players backstories for quests/information in the game, so I like a pretty well defined backstory. But some don't need them that in-depth
If you need help with character creation, I can help you
Oh thank you very much
So let’s say you’re a DM and your NPC meets the party. Can that NPC team up with the party and engage in battle alongside them and stuff? So like you can control their attacks and actions as well as the enemy’s attacks and actions?
Technically speaking, yes this is possible within the rules. There are even systems to help with this, like the Side Kick rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
You can do that. But it can sometimes be hard to ensure you as the DM and the "NPC" is not taking up too much of the time away from the actual party
However, there is somewhat of a taboo against it, but taboos and DM guidence is a little bit beyond the scope of this channel. This would be a better topic for #dm-discussion
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, thank you guys so much for telling me
Uhm hey I'm back since I was making my character
What is personality traits?
Ideals, Bonds, and flaws.
personality traits depend on the background you choose. There is a list to choose from or roll table for them. (if you want to hop into a call it might be easier to help you with it that way)
All 4 of these things (personality traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws) are optional apsects of the game, that exist purely to help you try to role play your character better
Yes please.
They exist as a means of helping you get into the mindset of your character, and make decisions as they would
Remember, this is a person you're designing to exist within a game world! When it asks "what are your character's personality traits?" it's being very straightforward. Is your character kind? Rude? Do they like keeping things neat and tidy? Do they likereading?
It's all up to you! Have fun with it

@glad cloak Take a read of the linked articles and resource above
ohh that? okay
thank you
If you want it to be.
Genasi tend to be Medium size but you can make a Small size one. Talk to your DM.
pfft i mean height of an average man
In the original printing of the genasi race, they were Medium creatures, which would mean that yes, they are taller then halflings. However, the race was reprinted and updated in Monsters of the Multiverse, and the current version allows you to chose whether you want to be size Small or Size Medium, which means you get to pick
Height is whatever you want within Medium size.
I was just checking to see if that was the case. Thanks!
The height/weight range was suggested, not fixed. It's essentially flavour and flavour is free.
thanks, was a bit nebulous but not in like a bad way
So Im kinda new but would wanna design some enemies. Is there an enemy making guide anywhere?
The DMG has a section in Chapter 9: Dungeon Master's Workshop on creating a monster:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#CreatingaMonster
However, if you're new I would recommend by reskinning an existing monster since you lack the experience to know what is "balanced" for that CR level monster.
I would recommend to ask for advice in #dm-discussion
Fair enough. Theyre not entirely my own creation, just some video game enemies i think fit the fantasy setting
Same thing.
The advice still applies regardless of where the idea comes from.
right, just letting you know that im not trying to dive headfirst with my 'super cool edgy oc' kinda stuff
Im totaly new and i wonder if anyone can help me
Hi there! Have you checked the pinned messages here in the channel?
It has useful resources to help get you started.
I'd recommend giving the free basic rules a skim and maybe watching some shows of folks playing D&D (remembering that most D&D streams are entertainment first and not really "how to play".). Then maybe try making a character sheet (refer back to the free basic rules) and then find a group to join and start playing!
I dont get that caracter sheet so what shoud i do
Character Sheets

Hello im new can someone help me to learn how to play ?
check out the links above and in the pinned messages :) They include many useful topics and information on how to get started :)
okay
how can i play ?
You need to know the rules (at least in part), you need a character (if you're a player), and you need a group (including someone to DM). Then you can either play in person around a table or online (described in this article: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online).
Looking for players who want to join a one shot this Thursday!
Dude, not here either. Post in #looking-for-players
Well, this isn't the channel either for advertising.
Please carefully read #find-a-game as it explains how to use and post in our lfg channels. Posting looking for games anywhere else is off topic.
hi!
Hello how are you
Hello
Hi there!
Hey I'm new to dnd what do I need to start?
Well like most games, it helps to read the rules - here's a link to the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then maybe watch some videos of folks playing D&D - check YouTube and Twitch. Just remember that many of these shows are for entertainment first, not teaching D&D.
Then maybe try your hand at making a character - refer back to the free basic rules and/or use tools like DnDBeyond to help you out.
Then top it off by finding a group to play with!
How do I make a character I don't know where?
Also check out the pinned message here in the channel
Oh okay
And read the first couple of chapters in the free basic rules - it has a step by step guide in the first chapter.
Or use DnDBeyond - it has a new user path to help you build a character.
Okay when I finish making the character how do I find a group?
Nvm I'll check pinned thanks for the help 🙂
Apologies for the delay - when you’re ready to find a group please read the info in #find-a-game
tbh you shouldn't make a character sheet till you've found a group and spoken with its DM, as they may have limitations set you weren't aware of. you'll also have more fun if you can work with a DM to make a character that really fits within the setting and the campaign they're running
if you have a specific concept you're excited about, you can still make it happen, just better to talk it through with them to work it out
I see thanks for the advice but I'm pretty much new to dnd so I'm gonna read and watch some stuff and then find a group who can bear with me 😂
completely valid; good luck and have fun!
Hallo
It’s a good idea for new players to make a practice character first
i’m joining the dnd club at my school this year (my friend convinced me to) and i don’t know how i’m supposed to start

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
those basic rules are long for basic rules
Dnd is a game with rules. There is no way to avoid spending some time to learn them
Hey ^^
Since it's against the rules to share personal info here uh.. I really want to find a group to play with in person since I might be moving somewhere for the first time and I feel like I'm just gonna be sad w/o something to do on a weekly basis lol. But idk how to go about finding that, even in the channels here
If you want to find a local game, you’ll probably have more luck searching locally.
You could check local game stores or libraries.
Or look for a sub-Reddit or Facebook group specific to your area.
Ahh that's good advice thank you :)) I'm just worried I won't find much and I'm also scared bc I've never played in person before
I've only done 3 sessions w one DM I left and a one session one shot with another, both online
Depending on where you’re moving to, there may be options for finding fellow gamers such as through a gaming/hobby store (try https://locator.wizards.com), library, or a website like MeetUp (as mentioned above). Plus, you could always start a group yourself.
As for nervousness, you don’t get over it by avoiding it, but folks tend to want others to enjoy the hobby, so you should find welcoming folks somewhere! Honesty and communication go a long way in this community.
I don't mind if I have to start one myself. It's just that I feel the hardest part would be finding a good dm (no luck on the site btw but thank you for sending it!
)
Plus I'm not keen on paid games if I'm being honest
Fair. Be the DM and I suspect you’ll have players in no time.
Oh gosh hah,, I don't think I could mentally handle all the prep for being a DM
Plus, I don't recall who said it. But I wouldn't want to look behind the screen tbh
Just pointing out it’s an option. From the outside, it looks harder than it is.
Ohhh okok gotcha
Oh um also I don't have a means for transporting myself independently, by choice. So this probably limits me in how far away I can look for groups too
That will present a challenge. Thankfully, online remains a possibility if you have no luck with in-person play.
Where can I find a group. Online or in person?
Read through #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's Looking for Group/Game channels. As for in-person, check if your school, library, or game/hobby shop has any tabletop programming. If they don't, suggest they start (or see if they can't point you toward some).
Uhh hey is there like a dnd session I could join?
I'm still new but I already made a character and such
Check the LFG channels - read #find-a-game to see how they work and how to use them.
Thank you
Oh hey your pfp is cool Stanly, did you make it yourself?
Finding DMs is always a bit hard for players to do I know many people still looking for one but hey it's not impossible and in real life if you go to tabletop stores and ask around sometimes you can find groups
Well I'm that kind of person who doesn't come out of the house that much
But I just go out either I got to gym or go buy groceries
Do you prefer online play or are you looking for a group in real life?
I prefer playing online
Yeah well DMs especially ones you may like can be hard to come by but some people do get lucky and find some who are available it's just about searching them out mostly
Can spells hit criticals too?
If there is an attack roll, then the rules for critical hits applies.
Yeah mostly the problem a lot of players run into is time zones if you got a good time zone you probably will find something way easier
Is my skills good?
Divine Sense
Within 60 ft., detect presense of undead, celestial, or fiend. Also detect consecrated or desecrated object or place (use 0 times/long rest).
Lay on Hands
You have a healing pool of 5 HPs, with it you can heal a creature or expend 5 points to cure disease or neutralize poison (use 5 times/long rest).
How do you know if theres an attack roll or not
And my literal Triats is this :
Shelter the Faithful
You and your companions can expect free healing at an establishment of your faith.
The spell will say if an attack roll is made by the caster or if a saving throw is made by the targets.
Or in the rare case of magic missile, no rolls but a damage roll is needed since it automatically hits.
Is that “make a ranged spell attack”
Guiding Bolt, for example:
Make a ranged spell attack against the target.
I kinda like my character because I can be in the Frontline while Healing my teammates
correct - whenever a spell states that, the caster needs to make an attack roll.
Otherwise its a guarenteed hit? As long as theyre not behind cover?
Saving throws are the other common determinate.
Wherein the target rolls to avoid your spell instead.
No - most spells either require an attack roll or a saving throw. Sometimes a successful saving throw negates the effects of the spell but most often reduces the damage and other effects.
Fireball, for example:
Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw.
Wait is there a Roll of Like protecting an ally? Like when enemies target our Cleric or smth?
Not without a special feature or feat.
But there are some features and feats like that as well as some spells that can help protect allies from attacks.
My flaw is this thing "I strive to help the needy, to the point where i often ignore my own needs."
Can lead to some interesting role-playing moments
Me who is dying but still helped an ally
Well as long as I have my lay on Hands everything will be fine
Right?
Well... sometimes you got to be careful with your character resources management! But Lay on Hands is a nice feature and can really help keep the party (and yourself) going for just a bit longer.
i mean thats just paladin skills
which is fine
but like... its the same as any other level 1 paladin
I really like it so much well if you look at my flaws I'm literally a guy who still helps my allies even I'm about to die
This is my flaw
yeah
Not sure if allowed, searching for mentor to help me: learn how to play, what things mean, where to start. I know NOTHING.

^ those links
I'd recommend giving the free basic rules a skim, maybe watch some videos of folks playing D&D (YouTube/Twitch - but remember they are entertainment first, not training on all the D&D rules), try your hand at creating a character to get a feel for that (make sure to reference those free basic rules - the first couple of chapters deal with characters). Then when you have a rough feel for the game, go find a group to play with! Most groups are fine taking on new playesr if they show a willingness to learn and fit in well with the group.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel.
To be honest, when I go to read over the rules and how to play I get overwhelmed.
That's fair - theres a bit of heft to the rules. The key mechanics to keep in mind is that:
- Your character attributes fuel how likely your character will succeed on a skill or check that uses that attribute - e.g. the higher your strength score, the more likely you'll succeed on strength checks and saves.
- The DM will determine if/when a dice roll is needed and what kind of dice roll. For instance let's say you're playing a human fighter with a longsword and you want to attack a goblin that's harrying the party with arrows. You tell the DM what your character wants to do - e.g. "I'd like to attack the goblin with my longsword". The DM might then say "Make an attack roll". You'd roll a D20 dice, add your strength modifier and your proficiency bonus to the result, and report that to the DM. If that attack roll beats the Armor Class of the goblin, the DM would ask you to roll damage - and you'd roll 1d8 + strength modifier. You would do that much damage to the goblin. If that takes the goblin to 0 HP, you've defeated the goblin. So that's a combat dice roll example.
- Focus on having fun - this is a game and memorizing all the rules is not what the game is about or even required.
There are rules videos like Handbooker Helper and WASD20’s Rules School.
Thank you both!
I have seen the fun and fulfillment ppl have gotten out of playing, especially for a long time with everyone involved being so dedicated to the game and each other. So I don't want to give up on searching despite moving somewhere kinda remote bc I know this is possible
Yeah fair enough if where you are moving to has some DND groups you can find most likely you will find them in tabletop stores etc but if you can't find a real life group online groups also aren't bad either
Personally I find DND to be great and if you can find a good group of people it is great fun no matter if it's online or in real life
Yo, my dudes, quick noob question
Is the character appearance irrelevant somehow? I mean, if I picture a pc with armor or something, does it naturally have to be reflected on the sheet? Like, the way I see this, if it is lvl 1, then having some flamboyant golden armor knight would be kinda outlandish
Nah it doesn't matter that much if it's just cosmetic
Yeah ofc :))
I'd mainly j be sad like if I ended up really liking the ppl I'm playing w and become friends I'd want to meet them but prob wouldn't be able to if it was online yk? Hah, that's just one of many things I've been thinkin ab a lot
Yeah well that's no reason not to do and online campaign I get it and hey if you become good enough friends maybe eventually you could meet up in real life
Heh yeah that's true
Have you had any luck in real life or online?
Finding a game I mean
Do you mean in the past or right now?
Both
i am VERY new to dnd and just setting up my character so im a total newbie. ive been watching a few videos and guides but theres a still a few things i dont get
1- I have little to no idea on how to use or write a character sheet
2- I dont know how to read whtvr this is (1d4)
3- Thieves' Tools (i dont know which one to pick or what they do)
4- dnd is confusing
Ohh ok well, my first ever game was three sessions with one DM, of which I left the campaign of. And after that, a one shot led by a different DM. First campaign was me and one other player, but for the third session it was me and two other ppl since I was allowed to let my friend join. But the one shot after this w the different DM was uhh, I think 5 players including me I believe?
2nd one means one d4 which is a d4 dice and look up character sheet building guides
ohh got it thx
- A site called D&D Beyond might be able to help you w that. Learning how to use it just comes from being in games and looking over it regularly every time you roll or check your spells etc
- Four sided dice. Other dice are listed similarly e.g. 1d6 = One six sided die, 3d12 = Three twelve sided die and so on
- This helps ya steal stuff among other things heh
- I'll repeat the second half of what I said in 1 :))
Side note, a d100 is a one hundred sided die also called a percentile die, but I've never had to roll one yet so I don't know any more than that
im actually using dnd beyond rn but since im a bit smooth brain and i cant fully comprehend what the website, im still very lost 👍
I have it is immensely satisfying
Yeah look up a guide it really helps it's how I got started
Have you found any people or group to join?
I’ve never actually come across a proper 100-sided dice, most people role two d10s and mark one as the tens and the other as the units
At the moment, no not yet. I've only done very veryyyy surface level "research" on the ttrpg scene around where I'm moving on if it actualy exists lol
I have seen that but I have an actual 100 sided dice now would send a picture but can't on the server
Of which it does, I haven't looked further than that just yet
Yeah, those things just keep rolling tho lol….
Ohhh that's smart hah
I know right
They’re like golf balls
A deadly weapon in the hand of a ranger I'll tell you that much
Had to get myself a proper physical d100, never had the chance to use it tho lol
Oh! Also, how often would you say you've actually seen someone carrying a little dice inside a necklace or something? I've heard some ppl always carry a d20/a dice set with them but not sure if it's true
I have literally never seen that
Woah fr? I think it's a cute idea lol
Never, and couldn't see myself doing so either, the constant clacking while moving would definitely bother me too much
I should get an actual d3
I did just get this pocketwatch that opens up that holds this tiny cute set of dice though, so that could be used for carrying around 👀
that sounds so cool
That's so sick hehe /pos
Wait what's the best God I could get?
Since in my character sheet it need faith
Idk what God there is
That depends on the DM
I see so I leave it empty right?
Yep
Nice ask the DM what gods he has so you can fill it in
Oh yeahh dependin on the game/world you're joinin and the way your DM likes to run things, it would be good to ask the DM if your character fits the tone of the campaign as well
Hi I'm new
Hello new I'm dad /j Welcome!!
Lol
Lol
I just wanted a place to talk Abt d&d
Hello there Khandar welcome
Maybe to learn new stuff
Aye nice, there's always plenty of ppl around here happy to listen and help you there ^^
How long have you been into DND?
Wow well welcome to the hobby
I haven't even played a campaign yet
Thx
I need help learning
I'm being tought by my grandpa who has the 1st Manuel
Thankfully we got the newest version
Omg that's amazing
Wait so has he not played since then, or has he kept playing ever since 1E?
I feel old....
i think im going to spend at least a week just creating a character
i thought i would just be reviewing the 5th edition then i found the rule book today
The current edition is 5th Edition. The old books are not relevant except for historical purposes. They’re different games
If you want to know more about past editions head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
Hello, I'm a new D&D player. I haven't played any campaign and I was wondering about how common were paid sessions
I dunno how successful they are but i see ads for them everywhere
Me too, that's why I am curious. I see adds for campaign much more often than free games and so, I was wondering.
