Light mode users deserve this.

maybe when they see how it looks in that theme they'll convert to being a dark mode user

How do I maximize my chances of getting an admission at a German university?
It would be nice if there was a channel for "German culture"!
I was wondering if German has a deep culture in baking because lately I've been seeing so many German baking channels pop up on my youtube feed
especially bread!
You mean like #1033125270217048246 ?
Oh boy sour dough bread is such a big thing here I could write books about it. We also have some good cakes, Schwarzwälderkirsch, Donauwelle, Bienenstich
thanks!
I thought germany had a bad rep when it came to food but bread and cakes sound good to me!
One small suggestion: The bottom of the break should be transparent in order to match up with the blob's body
the bottom?
oh wait, got it
yeah I was just being lazy ahahah hold on
@woeful light does this look better

can someone suggest what should i look as a first job i austria as a student
it would be of great help cuz honestly idk
This isn't the proper channel to ask this.
I recommend asking in #1033125270217048246 and providing extra information about your personal situation and interests to make answering your question easier.
I am going to Germany as a student, is Expatrio safe to make a blocked bank account?
hey hey, i just wanted to ask a few questions regarding #study-tasks and how it's functioned as well as the permission of being able to send tasks there but there aren't much details about it in #writing-info as far as i have read
maybe we could add a bit more about the channel in there such as how to become a task giver and any additional details appropriate? I've noticed a number of members in #general expressing interest in volunteering or contributing their teaching services to learners for german so they can look further into it if they're interested
Well, #writing-info would not be the sensible place to put the primary info about #study-tasks , since #writing-info is only for writing specifically, whereas #study-tasks can be pretty much anything.
We can certainly add some explanation about #study-tasks somewhere though. Can you make that part a suggestion in #suggestions please?
Aside from that, what are your questions?
Aah got it, I'll make sure to when I get the time
How does a person get access to write in there? I've noticed that most of the people who have been granted access to the channel have the role lesson holder but I'm not quite totally certain and wanted some clarity just to be sure
Currently it's tied to SH. People ask us about study tasks way less often than they do for sessions, so it's also a less defined process, but in general we also try to do a "trial" where the person will send us the material first, we'll have a look and allow them to post it. If we're confident that the person can consistently produce quality materials on their own, then they don't need to go through the review stage after the first (few) task(s).
Ahh, I got it! Is it something that a member can have a trial on separately and not be tied to session holding? I thought there's a probability that there can be members who would like to volunteer or assist learners with their German but aren't comfortable with lessons (or talking in public channels)/ would prefer to stay anonymous and just use the means of texting for tasks
Atm no, it's the same role for both, as we haven't really found the need to separate them, but separation would be easy enough to do.
Though no one is forced to host sessions or anything just because they have the role. It's just that one role does two separate things atm, and getting it gives you permissions for both.
Noted, that's all for now. Thank you for clearing the confusion!
No problem. If you'd like to make the suggestion for describing it somewhere yourself, feel free to go for it. But I can also do it, just so we have it written down somewhere.
Oh no worries, I don't want to inconvenience you. I'll make sure to make a suggestion for it right when I get back home. I initially wasn't quite sure which channel to opt for because I wasn't sure if giving feedback or suggesting to add something would go here or suggestions
If it's something that mods should do, it's #suggestions . If it's something not specific to mods, such as if you wanted to write an FAQ or request a specific type of lesson to be held, it's #community-discussion .
Got it, danke danke base
Hallo Leute, ich habe eine Frage. Kann jemand mir sagen, wo kann ich die Informationen über Umweltzone Wien zu finden und wo kann ich die Umweltplakette für PKW dort kaufen?

Hello can i find someone here who wants to practice german with me ? Im B1 trying to get my b2 certificate
Und ä gehört da auch keins rein.
Das hab ich als Dialekt durchgehen lassen xd
Here's my attempt at an FAQ for Digga, would be very grateful for any feedback.
Digger / Digga
You might have heard a native say this or otherwise stumbled across it, but are you sure about its meaning and usage in sentences?
Digger, also spelt Digga, is an informal word similar in usage to bro in English.
It likely comes from the Hamburger-dialect version of the word Dicker, literally fatty; note however that in this case it is closer in meaning to buddy than a comment on a person's build.
-
🇩🇪 | "Was ist los, Digger?"
-
🇬🇧 | "What's up, bro?"
-
🇩🇪 | "Ich hatte viel zu tun, tut mir leid, Digger."
-
🇬🇧 | "I was busy, sorry bro."
-
🇩🇪 | "Klar, Digga."
-
🇬🇧 | "Sure, bro."
-
🇩🇪 | "Willst du einen Film sehen, Digga?"
-
🇬🇧 | "Do you want to watch a film, bro?"
For query names I'd propose "digga", "digger" and maybe also "dicker", though I'm not as sure about that.
i'd add the fact that "dicker" literally translates to fatty but in this case its more like a german word for buddy
Looks pretty decent, great job
I would probably slightly alter the introduction to " you might have heard a native say this word or stumbled across it at some point, but are you sure about its meaning and usage in sentences? from you have probably heard a native say this at some point but aren't sure what it means?
Thank you, is this any better?
yes!
Thank you, do you think You might have heard a native say this or otherwise stumbled across it, but are you sure about its meaning and usage in sentences? would be okay?
Ah good, thank you!
Joa, it seems pretty good
Nice, thank you for the advice!
When will you contribute a FAQ of your own? It's been a while since your last one. 😔
Uh, when my german is efficient enough to contribute some learning material to pass on my almost-not-useless knowledge so most probably in like 10 years
do i need a foundation year (studeinkolleg) if i want to apply for bachelors in Luxemburg?
@kindred sluice Hello, just wanted to let you know that there are a few typos in the #thing-of-the-day entry:
Wort des Tages: Eichhörnchenschwanzhaare (previously an I)
Englisch: Squirrel's tail hair
Sorry for the ping.
I've deleted it for now so the mistake doesn't stay up. Feel free to repost it once you've corrected it, @kindred sluice.
And while it's optional, it's useful to provide extra information about the word, e.g. usage in context, an interesting fact about it etc.
Ein "danke" Emoji wäre gut
Can you provide one?
hi this is my suggestion
I'd vote for it

@wispy crow (This regards the message in #suggestions, I wasn't sure where to put this.)
I don't think we would be able to discuss most news events in voice channels though, seeing as they generally fall under #1025098221653073940 and such discussions could be extremely volatile and difficult to moderate.
Yeah I thought so. As long as people are sensible it could work out but it is obviously impossible to monitor everyone. Thanks for your feedback. 🙂
Discussions about a suggestion can go directly in #suggestions .
Alright, thank you!

Hi all, in March I'll be doing Erasmus program in Wien but the university wants B1 certificate from me, I decided to earn it through Goethe Institut or Testdaf but don't want to take courses, I only want to join B1 exam. Do you have any reccomendation to pass it, any tips or info?
goethe is the easiest. my only tip is to do sample exams, they always look the same
I would suggest taking Goethe classes first to supplement the studies…
Hey everyone! Nice to meet you all :). I'm learning German A2 and looking forward to learning from you all and improve my listening skills as well!

Take a look at #1065443550004781067.
Please have a forum called "Gaming" and people would initiate forum pages/entries with the game, for which they want to find partners.
I, for example, would make an entry for a game I like and others would like to communicate me or with others who play that game.
Hej, can anyone help me to understand how it works with different study groups? I just started studying German and I would like to pair up with some study partners, unfortunately I cannot post on #find a study partner and I don’t know how study rooms work. I am a noob 😒

Hallo, is there going to be a lesson German vowels?
Hey hey, to what I am aware, there are no current lessons scheduled on the basis of German vowels (or in general) though if you want to suggest it, feel free to do so. If you were asking if there were any going on currently, running the command >lessons and reading #lesson-info might prove to be useful in helping you out with your questions.
How can the relationship between art and literature in 15th to 18th century Germany be explored? could you suggest me a literary text or a painting from this period and examining whether there are any interconnections, influences, or depictions of one medium within the other.
Hi there, Shakir! #community-discussion serves as a bridge between the community and administration where they can hold discussions relating to either the server, FAQs, or receive constructive feedback. @wide berry @faint peak @leaden shell @dusty oriole Let me know here what lesson topics you want me to run (for winning the raffle). Feel free to also give a preferred time/day and I'll try to run it at a good time for you. If you want to ask me something privately about it, feel free to use #report-issue to contact me (don't DM me because I might not see it).
im still unsure (but have something in mind), so i will wait for the rest, maybe they will inspire me 🌟
No problem. I will try to do the lessons in the order that I gave the names above so yours will probably be the 3rd session.
btw how would the lesson be executed exactly?
Have you ever attended a lesson on this server before?
In a vc i think so at some point
Yeah, so basically the plan is just to hold normal server lessons, but you get to choose one of the topics.
So for example, if you really want a lesson on a certain grammar topic, like adjective declension, you could choose that. Or if you want to do a certain kind of reading session, we could do that.
I'm open to ideas but of course there's a limit to what I can do.
Funny you use this example because I was actually thinking about it
I think that'll be what I will choose
I think I'd like a lesson on cases. Could always use a brush-up :)
If the lesson could be somewhere between 20:00 and 22:00 CET, that would fit me best :)
If in the weekends, during the afternoon would work too
That sounds pretty good. And doing a lesson on cases followed by a lesson on declension would be pretty good since they're connected.
Awesome :)
Do you have any specific things within cases that you want to go over? Like are you interested in when to use each case? Or the actual declension rules?
I think the 'when to use each case' would be nice to get a brush up on
Okay, cool. So I'll do the first one on when to use cases and the second one on declension.
<t:1704567600:F>
Will that time work?
No rush to confirm or anything btw. There's no time limit on when to do these. If you want to think more or if you have any questions, that's fine.
That would work just fine :)
Actually is it fine to do the same time/day but a week later? Then I can give people more time to see the announcement.
That would also be fine
Hallo,
gibt es auf diesen Server irgendwo eine Übersicht über das (behördliche) Leben in Deutschland?
Also zB Tipps für Notrufnummern, Nummern für bestimmte Themen, offizielle Internetadressen oder seriöse Vereine, die Ausländern helfen, Übersicht über die verschiedenen Kosten, die man hier mindestens hat und was die bedeuten? (Wohungsmiete: Miete, Nebenkosten, was darin enthalten ist,...)
Sowas gibt's meist von der AWO lokal abgestimmt
Was ist AWO?
Da hätte ich ja auch selber drauf kommen können…danke 😁
@faint peak What kind of time/day works best for you?
@nimble pebble
(why can’t I react under your message in emote suggestions.
)
There has been a kind of problems with random reaction on things being voted in the past and so reacrions generally weren't enabled, but I guess we can try enabling them between rounds
But if you react negatively I'll kill it!
How could I react negatively? My heart is always happy seeing a message from good old Bulli.
I think we should have a: Do CS emote. @winged anchor
Just in the server.,, like an old member.

uhuh
I'm free pretty much all of january, but i'd prefer if it was past <t:68400:t> but before <t:25200:t>
Okay, cool, thanks.
What days and what time do lessons on this channel start?
You can see lesson announcements in #lesson-announcements .
And lessons will be held in lesson Stage Vc
@gaunt bridge my topic is going to be the passive, especially its past forms
Okay, no problem.

Hi. Am looking for a person who is abive 18 years old and lives in Baden. Thank you

<t:1706392800:F> Does that day/time work for you? Sorry for some delay in setting up the session btw.
It should work, yeah
How long are the classes generally?
Last one was about 1.5 hours.

Try #writing or #942470380692590632.
hm yeahh 🤔 alright
I often notice people asking why there are two generals and thought it might be useful to make a FAQ about it. Here's my attempt at one:
Why are there two General chats?
To accommodate our learning community with a place where they can engage in conversations and general banter, we offer both the channels #general and #general-2. As #general is the most active channel in GLaD, it caters to multiple discussions simultaneously unfolding at a pace prone to getting overwhelming for individuals who aren't accustomed to fast-paced conversations and might find it hard to keep up.
#general-2 offers a more peaceful environment where things are not nearly as chaotic. People refer to this channel whenever their situation calls for it. The members also don't have to be worried about random messages disrupting their conversation, which makes it all the more appealing
We can't guarantee that #general-2 will be the quiet channel. Rather than describing it as though the two channels have different purposes (which they don't), it would be better to just explain that we have two channels in case one is too busy.
Ah I got it. Give me a minute, I'll change it a bit
Why are there two General chats?
To accommodate our learning community with a place where they can engage in conversations and general banter, we offer both the channels #general and #general-2. Though both channels meet a mutual purpose, we offer 2 Generals for a member to refer to in cases of one getting too busy to make productive use of, free from unwanted disruptions and havoc
I also think it should be worded a bit more simply. Remember, not everyone on the server is a native English speaker, so it's best to keep it to simple and common phrasing.
That's pretty understandable, I tried more simple phrasing with the FAQ. How does this sound to you?
Why are there two General chats?
We accommodate our learning community with two Generals where they can socialise and chat with others. Both channels serve the same purpose, and the only reason we offer 2 Generals is for giving members a choice to cater to the other channel whenever the general in question becomes busy and they worry about random messages being disruptive to their conversation
Here's how I would write it:
The "general" channel is a channel where you can chat casually with other server members in English or German. Since this is a big server, we need two general channels in case one gets too busy. Both are the same and have the same rules and expectations, so feel free to use whichever one you want.
I'm not trying to be critical but I think it's a good learning experience if you want to write things like this more in the future. Some of the phrases you use are not common and sound overly wordy or convoluted. For example, "to accommodate sb with sth" sounds over the top in this context, and "to cater to a channel" is an unusual way to describe using a text chat.
That sounds pretty good, I think that could work for the FAQ
Oh no worries, gotcha. I think I am too used to writing in phrases such as these because I treat every message I write like my English assignments
I'll make sure to keep that in mind if I ever think on attempting at a FAQ in the future.
Sure. Not just for FAQs but since you like helping people a lot, always try to be aware of the audience you're writing for.
Humans, I hope
@leaden shell What times work for you for your passive lesson?
on week days after <t:1706464800:t> and on weekends anytime

I am sorry but none of those chats are activated
Thank you for the recommendation though. I am keep lookin
I even joined coding group
I believe you might have to get the channel's role to access it. Feel free to grab the role in id:customize for it.
(ask about living in Germany)
Ah maybe I should Thank you so much Irina 🙂
It's nothing, I am happy I could be of assistance.
God bless you
@gaunt bridge you missed the time by half an hour tbh
Half an hour earlier and i would have joined 😦
I have work at 5:30am ist tomorrow
But then wouldn't you miss a lot of the lesson anyway?
Yep i did miss a bucket full of them
I attended close to 0
No I mean if you have to leave at 5.30 and the lesson starts at 5 then you only see 30 minutes of the lesson.
Could you change the time to half an hour before it?
Is the lesson more than 30 minutes?
Usually they're at least an hour, sometimes 2 or 3.
Then I'll join delayed.. np
Around an hour late.. how much would i miss @gaunt bridge
||Sorry for the ping, but this is the last one||
I don't mind necessarily trying to cater for different time zones, but you have to keep in mind, you might think "just change it by X minutes and it works for me" but what if that change then ruins it for 10 other people? I can't just change arbitrarily for one person every time.
Not sure. I don't know how long this lesson will be.
Ok but could you please make a session at 4pm, german time
On what topic?
It'll be close to 9 or 10pm and i can join
Upcoming lessons
Yeah but it's not like every single upcoming lesson is going to be suitable for where you're at in your learning.
Like there's a huge difference between an A1 lesson and a C1 lesson.
Yep, dont mind until i get vc sessions
I wont attend c1 lessons tbh
So what kind of topics are you interested in?
There's no point in me changing one to your time that isn't useful for you.
I'm not sure if I will be doing lessons at that time since that's 2am for me.
Wait i forgot you're australian
What time zone are you in australia?
A1 A2 B1 levels
AEST/AEDT.
Assuming you mean noon, sure, I can do some lessons at that time.
Vielen dank
@leaden shell How about this time? <t:1707552000:F>
im down
Okay, it will be next weekend so people have time to see the change. I might replace this weekend's lesson with something else instead.

Hello Everyone... I am new here in this community. I know A2 level german and want to improve on my spoken German. I can see there are study and german conversational groups in the voice channels. Can someone guide me as to what are the rules to be a part of those groups and how to get in touch with someone who is willing to have a conversation with you in German and maybe guide you on how you can improve in it as well?
Welcome to the server, please read #getting-started and the #rules as well. To find a study partner take a look at #1065443550004781067.
Update notice
Hello cuties, we have reworked #1211332083876892712 into a forum, which will be used for both suggestions and voting.

That session is already over, it was hosted last year if I'm not mistaken.
It actually never took place bc no one showed up

It sounded like a good idea, sorry to hear it.
How about you host an official session?
My ideas are too diverse and confusing so they won't let me
Well, from what I'm seeing in your last ticket, here's my last reply.
Yeah that's perfectly fine. Then I'd suggest taking some more time to think about it, and once you have a specific piece in mind that you'd like to read, you can get in touch with us again.
The ticket then remained open for 6 more days after that message, and we didn't hear back, so it was closed. But we generally don't reject any session ideas unless they're terrible, so if you have a proposal, please feel free to open a ticket and let's have a look together.
yes really really good 😦
Can anyone make a lesson on prepositions taking akkusativ, dativ and both
Sure. I usually run them on weekends so can you give a usual time/day on weekends that you are available?
is tomorrow considered weekend to u?
Well I wouldn't do it tomorrow. I usually plan the lessons at least a week in advance.
thursday good?
wait nvm
i will see when i am free
The archived channel for #1033125270217048246 is referenced in the FAQ >faq dach rather than the current one. I am not sure whether it's something worth bringing up, but I was running a few FAQs and happened to see the command and thought it wouldn't hurt mentioning if you would like to update it.
thanks, I have removed the mention
Of course, don't mention it.
idk if this would be a question for this channel. But are there enough heritage speakers here to potentially have use for a specific channel? I've found its a pretty isolating experience when it comes to language learning and it'd be nice to have a place to discuss specific resources that work better for us than regular foreign language learning resources.
I don't really think so. There are currently 170 people with the Heritage Speaker role, with only a handful of them actually being active on the server.
They all have very varied levels of early contact with German and there hasn't been interest so far in a group for heritage speakers.
You might have luck chatting up people with the role and sharing your experiences, but I don't think there is enough demand for a separate channel.
Ah damn 😦 that's what I guessed but i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. It's a rough on because in terms of the normal a, b, c levels I'm completely all over the place so I can't use traditional learning methods. At this point it feels like I'm probably just gonna have to get by with practicing when I can on here and then end up mostly just improving via immersion once I move
Hey! Can anyone organize a A2 study session please 😔? I really need a study sesh like what you guys did in 25th October 2023 😔.
Are there going to be any translation exersizes soon?
Suggestion!
We can create a "debate club" for B2+ , of course German only, where we can discuss about different topics, pros and cons. (we can prepare for it before the call, vocabulary, ideas etc)
If you would like to organize something like that this might be the right place: https://discord.com/channels/221708975698083841/1158709392359833600
oh thank you. Your link is working well. But when I try to find it on my own in find-study-partners, I can't. Do you have any idea why is that maybe?
No idea. You have to scroll down a bit?

As always everyone is welcome to join. We have easier and harder questions for this one.
I am looking forward to it.
@neat dragon and @untold aspen will join me for the lesson. 😌 Leon did all the work.
Hi
@untold aspen
👍
Wondering if this was read by anyone 😅
Definitely a good idea, it might be worth combining the examples with a short explanation of how you can decide which one to use in general cases. (and yeah I also blanked that message somehow)
Hi, sure, we're always open for new FAQs, but of course there's a certain quality standard involved. If you feel like contributing a helpful and detailed enough explanation, we'd be happy to assist.
Ok! let me prepare a proper explanation for the topic
Könnten wir bitte C1 und C2 VC Unterricht haben?
Irgendwann und über irgendwas, es geht mir einfach darum, dass ich in die vorgeschlagenen Niveaus keine C levels sehe.
Irgendwann und Irgendwas isn’t really helpful. Please give some Suggestions about what you would like to cover for C1 and C2 so Session holders can consider them.
C1 and C2 levels are also always welcome to join every lesson and help out in the lesson chat with the other levels.
👍
OH thought server meta will send it to a different Chan el
Time to teach Economics in German
Yeah problem is that talking in C1/C2 isn't really about the language itself anymore but more about the content. And this might require people really being into a topic to be helpful because otherwise you might get a wrong a idea about specific words because they were taught to you wrongly in the first place. @cursive lintel

@tight timber To answer your question in #lessons, I've been planning to do a beginners course from A1 through till B1 at some point in future. It's taking me some time to prepare everything though, sadly.
In the mean time, you can check for upcoming lessons in #lesson-announcements, with the "See upcoming lessons" button in #lessons or by using the >sessions command in #botchannel. Best of luck with your learning. ^^
tysm !!
@vale rain Hey, you can see any upcoming lessons in #lesson-announcements, by clicking the "See upcoming lessons" button in #lessons or by using the >sessions command in #botchannel.
I don't think there's any planned atm but there should be new ones soon.

Hello, I have a suggestion from which more people would benefit from the activites/ workshops held here. Please consider checking the #suggestions
Or click on the message link (to an image above which my suggestion is posted). Here it is: #suggestions message
Thank you
@woeful hearth You can use #questions for this, #lessons is only intended for use during a lesson.
thanks
Möchte jemand jetzt nur auf Deutsch sprechen? Ich habe ungefähr B1
@feral lagoon (regarding #suggestions ), are you not just describing the Helper role which we already have?
We have something like that?
Hab die Rolle bei der rechten User Leiste nicht gesehen
You can’t. But you can click on my profile and see the helper role.
and how does one get this role?
The mod team decides who get the role, there is no application. Helpful members get the role in general. Have to be here for a while as well. But I don’t know the exact critiques.
okay that is wierd but okay.
Which part is weird?
that it doesn't get displayed on the right and is barely visible
It doesn’t get displayed right because then Helper would get pinged as soon as mods aren’t visibly online and that’s not what the role is supposed to be.
@worthy breach (regarding #suggestions ), do you mean something like #1065443550004781067's https://discord.com/channels/221708975698083841/1279811816297595033 thread?
That's exactly what I mean, thank you! I didn't have the role for that channel so I couldn't see it. Thank you for pointing me towards it!
No worries!
Hope it's helpful for you.
👌
I've seen some other language learning servers use a style of video game lesson. For example, playing a game, but having to translate random objects, chat bubbles, or other things. I've heard this is helpful as it can be simple things like numbers or house-hold objects, or more challenging suggestions such as translating opponent dialogue or something. I think that would be fun to do with someone who is a lesson teacher or a comfortable German speaker to correct any mispronounciations or mistranslations!
I've stolen this idea from a friend who is learning Chinese in another learning discord and that is something some of the lesson instructors have done with him. Thanks!
Do you mean playing a video game and streaming it and asking the learners questions about it while playing? Or do you mean making up a new game?
I believe they would play something together or the learner would play the game while the teacher would like essentially quiz them as they played
He is a super beginner at Mandarin and a teacher was making him play Balatro and count out loud in Mandarin and stuff like that. So like, "How much do you need to pass this round?" Etc. He's a super beginner so that was really all they hit I believe
Making him try and connect the imagery to the newly taught words I guess? I'm not a language teacher so I don't know for sure lol

faq Sessions
Lessons
The lessons held on the server don’t have a consistent schedule, because we allow lesson hosts to choose their own times and days. Lessons are held in the Lessons voice channel along with the #lessons text channel. Everyone is welcome to listen to the lessons even if they don’t wish to participate.
You can subscribe to a specific group to get pings whenever a session is announced. The current lesson groups are:
- Reading: Read and translate German texts together.
- AdvancedReading: Like Reading but aimed at B2+ speakers.
- Grammar: Lesson about a specific grammar topic.
- Activities: Speaking practice, learning games, or things that don’t fit in the other categories.
Subscribe by getting the roles from #850404908946423828!
Lesson Hosting
Lesson hosting is a voluntary role and we welcome any members who are interested to host their own sessions. If you’re interested in running a session, feel free to create a ticket in #report-issue and discuss it with a <@&305455824174710787>.
Even if you feel inexperienced or have no idea what to run a session about, we’re always happy to provide guidance and teach people how they can hold learning sessions.

@peak linden your suggestion and my suggestion go hand in hand

It'd be so nice if the VCs became as lovely and fun as the rest of GLaD, yours would be nice for making people safer too
I agree right now im too nervous to join vc based on the war stories ive heard

Nah dw that much

Just better if you're joining with a friend
@tidal bolt For the second point of your suggestion, we do actually have a publicly accessible >isbanned [USER] command. I think it's still an interesting idea though.
I talked to andromeda already about it but I'll give a similar response here just for clarity. As you mentioned, we already make info about people being banned available. The 2nd part of the suggestion was about making the ban reason available - the reason we generally don't do that is because we want to protect people's privacy to some extent, and we want to be able to record ban reasons accurately and with sufficient detail without having to worry about sensitive or inappropriate information being posted to a public chat. The 3rd part of the suggestion is logging things in a channel so it's more visible - personally I don't like that idea because it feels a bit inappropriate to put people on display like that especially in the context of something that could be embarassing for that person or which could encourage drama.
Yeah, that's valid. Thank you for explaining.
I've found the ban logs in one of the French servers to have the effect described at the end of your message, it just feels like public ridicule when you're sharing with the entire server some of a person's most uncomfortable bad choices and mistakes, especially where there was no need for anyone else to have known that information. The first proposed advantage was what piqued my interest most with that suggestion to be honest, but I suppose ban logs are less helpful there than a direct way of checking whether an issue has been acknowledged by moderators and is being looked into.

Lesson suggestion (if possible / if people would like to use it):- I think it could be fun to have a cooking/baking stream where we need to read recipe ingredients and instructions out and to translate from German to English. So it's good for vocab, and we can also practice the imperative form of verbs in German/ maybe we do an English recipe and translate to German also? 😊
Lesson suggestion: I'm really enjoying the Witcher and I enjoyed the children's story the other day, but I wonder if there is room to read something that falls between children's books and something as advanced as the Witcher? The only trouble is, I'm not sure what that would be!

I am telling you as a mini mod, this not the channel to ask about busty samurai
what ok that wasnt my content i was hoping for
May I humbly suggest for 1st April we do a pantomime reading of Noah's ark in German where we are all practising animal sounds
This might be an obvious question, but are there ever lessons NOT at the advanced level? I'm not sure I can keep up with a live lesson that's that far along. I'm specifically looking for something to interact with live, not just generic lesson resources. Thanks!
Yes, there are also other lessons, actually our only regular lessons are for advanced readers, but there is also other lesson content from time to time. Keep an eye on #lesson-announcements .
Beginner lessons are the most common lessons overall. I would estimate probably around 95% of the lessons that have been held on the server over time have been beginner lessons.
Lesson suggestion: that we play trivial pursuit or another quiz game auf Deutsch. I think we might be able to do this if people own tabletop simulator? It's a good way to answer trivia and if people are struggling perhaps we could describe the answers to them in German.
Lesson schedule suggestion: if possible, at least some lessons should be scheduled later so that North/South American learners in the server would be able to attend at a reasonable time (i.e. lessons held in mid-late afternoon EU, mid-late morning NA/SA, lessons held mid-evening EU, afternoon NA/SA). Asking since all recent lessons are scheduled for the overnight hours in North/South America.
All session holders pick their lessons time depending on their own preferences and personal time schedule.
Everyone is welcome to apply as session holder via ticket in #report-issue.

Lesson suggestion: play the game called "Words" ("Slova" in russian) in german.
Target of the game is to say a word that wasn't said before, after which another person should say another word, which start with the last letter of previous word.
E.g: ...Stuhl -> Leben -> Nachbar...
Would be cool if people would say the artikel, if person who said the word didn't mention it, and also when it gives complicated word or word meaning of which someone doesn't know, people would explain its meaning on german and english.

@woeful light here's the updated one
My opinion: people who get that wrong are absolute beginners and most likely have no idea what the cases are or what they mean, so it'd only confuse them and make the text too long. Unfortunately those same people also tend to have very short attention spans so short and concise is better.
I'd rewrite it with that in mind and focus primarily on examples. The checkmark and X emoji are great.
The direct translation would also likely be confusing since it's not idiomatic in English
You can write the basic part in the beginning and add the more complex explanations on a second page
I feel like the translations are helpful because people don't understand why they can't say what they want to say, whether it be ''du'' or ''dich. I also don't know how I would offer more complex translations on a second page since the information would just be the same but with no edits as it is presented here
As for the cases, perhaps it will give them a reason to do some research if they're not exposed to it? Or perhaps that could be the stuff on the second page. What if the first page was just simply the German + English and the emojis? Then the second page could be this as presented here
in other words, the first page would be this but reduced like you said, and the second page is unchanged so that they could see why each example works or doesn't work, grammatically
for example:
===To ask ''How are you?''===
-''Wie geht es dir?'' = literally, ''how goes it to you?'') ✅
-''Wie geht es Ihnen?'' = literally, ''how goes it to you?'' ✅
-''Wie geht es du?'' = literally, ''how goes it you?'' ❌
-''Wie geht es Sie?'' = literally, ''how goes it you?'' ❌
This could be on the first page. It gives them the info and nothing more
The bottom two English examples would give them an idea on why using du/Sie wouldn't work, because the English doesn't make sense either
I don't think you should include the "literal translations" either. I think it gives the wrong impression about how dative should be viewed.
Hm, but then they'll ask why we say it like we do or why they can't say du/dich
-''Wie geht es Sie?'' = literally, ''how goes it you?'' ❌```
I don't think this part adds anything either. I've never seen a beginner use these so I don't think it's common enough to include it.
The answer is: when you ask a question back, you use the same pronoun as the original question.
Wie geht's dir? -> Und dir?
And adding the literal translations doesn't answer the "why" question.
So you wouldn't like to have any English translations to the German examples?
Personally I like them because they give me something concrete that makes sense. And for beginners who are just getting started, they'll appreciate that too
It certainly could be trimmed down a bit but at the time I wanted to write an exhaustive list that would answer all questions
I think it could be included but not in an X = Y format without any clarification.
Ah so on the first page you'd just want to see this?
===To ask ''How are you?''===
-''Wie geht es dir?" ✅
-''Wie geht es Ihnen?'' ✅
And then that could be explained on the second page
I've actually seen these quite a lot. There's even an example in #german-only right now if you scroll up a bit
Like if I wrote it, it would be something like this:
The most familiar translation of "how are you?" in German is "wie geht's dir?" (something like "how goes it for you?" if you translate literally).
And that would be the only mention of it in the whole FAQ.
It could be a good introduction to the FAQ
Sure, but how would you then include Ihnen/euch? I feel like my bullet point system makes this easier
Did you like the simplified list above?
I would not list them without explaining something about the difference.
Even if that explanation is just pointing them to the du vs Sie FAQ.
Yeah which is why I point out the cases
What do the cases have to do with the difference between du, ihr and Sie?
Well, du doesn't work because it's the wrong case
What I'm saying is that if you just write this:
-''Wie geht es Ihnen?'' :white_check_mark:```
The question of the beginner is "what's the difference between those? Can I just choose whichever one?"
Agreed. In the original post I explain that the Ihnen one is formal
If you want to include it I think it makes more sense to explain it rather than just list it.
But I did explain it, no? The English literal translation should tell them why it doesn't work
No, the English translation should not be used to explain that. That's the problem.
Or do you want a bit of both? A brief description to accompany a group of examples?
Examples are fine but I think an FAQ that's just a big list of examples isn't very helpful.
Why don't you show me a bit more of what you want to see? For example, write out the dir and Ihnen with accompanying explanations
I'm going to bed but do feel free to workshop it. I'll look at it when I wake up. If we all agree then I'll adapt the rest of the list to whatever we like the best
The most familiar translation of "how are you?" in German is "wie geht's dir?" (something like "how goes it for you?" if you translate literally).
Why dir? Why not du?
"Wie geht's dir?" needs the dative pronoun "dir", not the nominative pronoun "du". This is a common mistake by beginners, because many other questions you learn as a beginner, like "woher kommst du?", use "du". You can find out more about cases using >faq cases.
What about euch and Ihnen?
If you want to ask the question to a group of people, you use "euch" (dative form of "ihr"):
- Wie geht's euch?
If you want to use the "formal you" (Sie), the dative form is "Ihnen":
- Wie geht's Ihnen?
To find out more about du, ihr and Sie, check out >faq du instead.
How do you return the question?
The general rule of thumb is to use the matching pronoun from the original question.
Wie geht's dir? -> Und dir?
Wie geht's Ihnen? -> Und Ihnen?
But:
Woher kommst du? -> Und du?
Next page
To see some of the ways you can answer the question, as well as a list of common mistakes, go to the next page.
This is roughly how I would structure an FAQ like this.
Then you could put your list onto the page 2, with most of the explanations removed since the page 1 handles the explanations and page 2 just lists the right and wrong sentences.
It might be helpful to give like a country and a feeling as an example, so that they don’t think that the u is capitalized in their answers and they can see how it will look like when it’s a full sentence.
Oh yeah, sure.
Because a lot of beginners struggle with it, and that why they can learn it the right way and not a wrong way first.
Struggle with capitalising "und" correctly?
They struggle with capitulation and they might start to think that the “und” has to be capitalized too when they respond.
Okay, I like it. Can we use this as the first page?
And then page 2 would be like this:
===To ask ''How are you?''===
-''Wie geht es dir?'' ✅
-''Wie geht es Ihnen?'' ✅
-''Wie geht es du?'' ❌
-''Wie geht es Sie?'' ❌
Shortened:
-''Wie geht es?'' / ''wie gehts?'' ✅
-''Wie gehts es'' ❌ (the extra ''S'' in ''gehts'' is redundant since it stands for ''es'')
Also possible:
-"Wie läuft es?" ✅ / -"Wie läufts?" ✅
Not possible:
-''Wie bist du?'' ❌
===To answer ''How are you?''===
''Mir geht es gut'' / ''Es geht mir gut''
Also possible:
-''Es geht'' ✅
-''Es läuft'' ✅
-''Super'' ✅
-''Toll'' ✅
Not possible:
''ich bin gut'' = ''i am a good person'' / ''i am good (at something)'' ❌
===To return the question===
-''und dir?'' ✅
-''und Ihnen?'' ✅
-''und du?'' ❌
-''und dich?'' ❌
-''und Sie?'' ❌
To answer the returned question:
-''mir auch'' ✅
-''ich auch'' ❌
-''mich auch'' ❌
Also possible:
-''Es geht mir auch gut'' ✅
-''Mir geht es auch gut'' ✅
Sure, that should work. But let me take some time to think about it.
Feedback on Base and Rin's lessons: Love it!! Really enjoyed reading through the witcher, translating, and then the summaries at the end. It's helped bring my writing skills back up to speed and I'd love to see more (whether other witcher stories, or maybe other short stories like Lovecraft in German).
Thank you Chocoloco for your feedback. Much appreciated.
We are looking forward to next Tuesday.
Feedback on the Witcher activity sessions: I only joined two special sessions and found them very welcoming! At first I wondered why a B1-C1 session was conducted in English, but then I realised it was more inclusive this way, especially for people who might only want to focus on their comprehension skills. I normally read 4th grade children's books or graded readers, so it's really cool that we can read regular German stories!
The only suggestion I have is that I have the impression you have to do a lot of work..? If there's anything I can do to help, I'd like to contribute my part. I don't know what standard lessons involve yet, but a quiz is something I could help draft if that would make Rin's work easier..?
Hello Su, thank you so much for your feedback! ^^
I am looking forward to see you more often in our regular reading sessions. Which, you will find out soon, are way less work than the special sessions. ^^
I am happy you had fun and I will keep your kind offer in mind ! :D
I'm relieved to hear this 🙂 Thank you both (and the community) again and I look forward to joining the next sessions as well!! 🙂
I also want to make quizzes for you but they will be about CS.
And then you have to correct them and explain them to people.
Hello Arrem, thank you for your kind suggestion.
Unfortunately I am not able to explain code in German.
But feel free to create a ticket to become a session holder yourself and prepare such kind of session. I am sure there are a lot of interested people who would love to participate.

It's ok you can learn, we'll find you a German CS YouTuber.
I only accept if he is as cute as Hikaru.
It is displayed in your time zone.
danke
just wanna make sure
Danke
I'd like to thank Rin and Catcat for organizing today's session as I've had a lot of fun attending and participating in it.
I've been to the Witcher reading once before, but didn't feel like I could keep up the pace. Today's session was quite nice, though, and I would absolutely like to see more beginner lessons of this sort.
That said, I appreciate the effort that goes into making these lessons no matter the level and would like to thank all organizers for their great work.
@unreal hinge Have you tried the 2-person study groups?
When one is filled another will open, you can use them in the sense you're describing there.
Sometimes, it has no space in all of them
Hi. I was wondering if anybody's interested in doing a lesson on words with similar meanings. Like merken and bemerken, etc. I feel like it would help a lot of people. I personally really stuggle with this. This is just a suggestion though!
Hello Rin, Base, and fellow lesson readers
Very sorry I missed the last session of the Witcher reading with the summaries! Do we know if the Tuesday morning lessons are continuing / what we will be reading? Really looking forward to them
Today we don't have one but we are planning another special session about the story we just read. Probably for next week.
Huzzah! Ty Base
Will there be a lesson this coming Tuesday, 22nd September? I've missed so many while I've been away, I do hope they are continuing xx
Sorry for the lack of update. I think that Rin has decided not to continue running them but maybe forgot to announce it. I'll ask her to put an announcement out about it. I could potentially take over running them, but I haven't committed to that yet, so I'll post an announcement if that happens.
Hey, can I dm you? :)
Always! No need to ask
@echo rapids hi
Hello 👋🏻
How are you doing?
Im good
Sorry it took a while, look at the new annoucement for more infos. :D
I'm not sure I can make 7.30 am but I will try. I booked to join a bike ride that day, thinking there was no lesson, so I will need to leave early if I even get there. If this is going to be a regular thing, then I will plan accordingly!
Cool, Hope to see you there tonight! ^^
And if not: have fun.
I'm sorry the lesson today was cancelled. I usually get up around that time and I was ten minutes late to it, only to find it was cancelled.
hello, it happens, see you next week
hi
may i know who teaches us German?
here

ok Guten Morgen, i learned this from youtube
one more word i read was, "itch" wat is it, dnt know how to pronounce it
another interesting word was "geandeous" means go straight , is it ok?
dnt know how to correctly pronounce it
I'm sorry I can't make the advanced reading sessions any more - I just can't be ready to go at 7.30 am! Hansel and Gretel sounds like fun.
No Worries. Looking forward to see you in other sessions. :)
Any upcoming A1 lessons
@night onyx (regarding #suggestions message)
Is that not a massive privacy risk having a bot that is able to record your conversations without your knowledge / permission? At any rate the mods don't seem to want any foreign bots in GLaD from previous messages
I addressed that point in my suggestion the bot doesnt work unless commanded
its not automatic
you have to make it join the targeted voice channel and set its language setting (it works for many languages so you have to specify german)
Okay so it will only record the voice of the person who asks it to do so?
no you go to the targeted voice channel and in its chat type
/recognize de
it will make the bot join the voice channel and will transcribe everything it hears from all mics on that voice channel as german text
when you done or dont want the bot to work anymore you write command
/stop
the bot leaves the voice channel - stops transcribing and outputs what it has transcribed as pdf
for more privacy protection the admins can make a specific voice channel for this bot and it can only work there
Hi I am interested in German lessons
Hallo alle! Gibt es einen Deutschkurs bei dieser Gruppe?
Moin!
Hier gibts derzeit kein Kurs fürs Deutschlernen im eigentlichen Sinne, aber wenn du so was brauchst wäre Nicos Weg [https://learngerman.dw.com/en/nicos-weg/c-36519789] vielleicht interessant! GLaD ist aber schon echt nützlich, wenn du Antworte zu deiner Fragen brauchst oder dein Deutsch üben willst. Lese #getting-started, wenn du weitere Informationen dazu brauchst.
Hoffe, dass das hilft
Any German lesson or lecture that I can participate as a beginner?
You'll get there, geradeaus
why is every channel locked for me guys?

Please read the [Roles section](#getting-started message) in #getting-started for info on how to join VC and more!
I'm excited that Rin is going to be running a reading lesson next Saturday! It's been so long...
I am looking forward to see you there.
Hallo leute 🙂
Can someone help me understand how to join VCs here. Can I join directly in any active VC or are they based on levels? Or anything I need to know. I already read the roles section and I joined this group a week ago so I think I am eligible for joining VC.
@stark juniper, please read the Roles section in #getting-started for info on how to join VC and more.

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m planning to study in Germany and I’m looking for some guidance from people who are already there or familiar with the system. I’d like to study in English, so I have a few questions:
- When are the admission periods and deadlines?
- What are the IELTS requirements (especially for the first application)?
- How does the application process work overall?
- And what is student life like in Germany?
I’d really appreciate any help or even a short chat with someone who has experience. Thanks a lot! 🙏
Please ask your questions in #1033125270217048246 or look them up on the thread.
These polls are for choosing the trial languages for the new other-languages forum which will be released next week. For more information, see #announcements .
chinese isnt a language buddy, but ok :/
Please read #announcements . The language terms in the poll refer only to potential new channels in a forum, not individual languages. It is not an attempt to define what is or is not a language in a linguistic or cultural context. We just don't have enough Chinese language speakers on this server to warrant a separate channel for every individual variety of the Chinese languages.

should this not be under the Meta category?
and doesn't it cross over suggestions a lot? Or is this just here so you can justifiably delete everything in there that isn't a call to >suggest? :P
no pinned messages, idk what to do
No, @blazing crane
#suggestions is basically for things you want us, the mods/server, to do directly. But stuff like "run more Level B Lessons" and so on are suggestions aimed at "the community" in general and would rather fit somewhere like this.
Just as an example.
oh ok. You might want to touch up that description to be more clear then ^^
wurde geändert
So this is basically for suggestions not directed at the mods?
das, und darüber zu diskutieren, wie wir den Server verbessern können oder Fragen zu FAQs oder was auch immer zu stellen @safe shadow
@safe shadow This is basically for all discussions related to work that the community does. It can be about lesson-hosting, about lesson content, lesson requests, FAQ creation/corrections, ideas for new community features, discussions of events, discussion of tasks for #study-tasks , organizing together with people to do anything like that, asking for assistance/corrections when creating content, etc.
Basically just a space for all people to come and be involved together.
Sounds promising
Guys is that community reading thing still on every night
it’s never been every night
it’s about once a week or so, an if you sub to the reading group you’ll get notified
there was one last weekend, dunno if there’ll be one this one too
Where do I sub?
in #botchannel
type >groups to list all groups you can sub to, and then >sub NAME to sub to the corresponding name
thanks
sorry did you delete my message about till lindemann just because it had a (100% relevant) reference to the virus in it
that wasn't a discussion on the virus, it was a discussion about rammstein
Hallöööchen
I have an idea which might be nice for the server
it would be nice to have a monthly text, something short like a tounge twister or something a bit longer, which learners record themselves reading out loud and then have their pronounciation evaluated?
the reading lessons somewhat capture this, but i feel like they‘re more aimed at practicing comprehension. It would be nice to have something purely for pronounciation
We can put the texts in study tasks and ask people to put their recordings in practice
Herm shared a wonderful example in #suggestions
Sounds nice
Yeah. This done in the Spanish English Exchange Server. Theres both Spanisch and English texts. Vllt wir können auch beide
I've always focused on pronunciation when helping during reading lessons
Its very helpful, you picked up on my könnte/konnte problem 😄
mfw no changes for april's fools
April fools is overrated imo 😂
we decided not to do anything this year due to the current events in the world, but we're planning to do a Joke day later in the year to make up for it 😔
Maybe it's just because my birthday is april 1st, but I've never been a big fan of them 😂
did you have something planned already, Syro?
Alles gute zum geburtstag mike
Danke 😊
c:
I think we should teach schweizerdeutsch. And change the icon to a big plus :P
@glad fjord
i can provide some tounge twister for different levels and the one i posted is kinda for C-Level and i think those are pretty limited.
A/B ( simple ones) can be found pretty easily.
What do you think about some poems/poetry in german ( usually a short text ) ? I have tons of books, a lot topics, and could provide a short text( a page from a book) with complex words, which are a challenge for pronunciation.
Another thing i am thinking about is how do you want to evaluate each recording ? I've seen about 10-20 people joined the last sessions in #beginner-german .
I am not sure how you think about it.. i think to practice/evaluate pronounciation a small group is better with a maximum of 4-6 people. (2 natives or experienced C/B/A Levels([i think we have members here regardless the level, whose pronounciation is , in my opinion, pretty good and who learn pretty fast] / Mods from the server ) ?
Just some thoughts on the topic. 🙂
I love the poetry idea, some people were after a poetry channel and in general its just really nice to read out and could help with cementing certain sounds through repetition in different words
I love lesson, i think theyre great part of this server. Some pronounciation lessons would also be a positive addition. The main reason i suggested recording is because theyre independent of time, as in theres a short monthly text and hopefully and example to help people out and people record themselves when they have time
@dusty oriole
....The main reason i suggested recording is because theyre independent of time, as in theres a short monthly text and hopefully and example to help people out and people record themselves when they have time
@glad fjord
Sounds good and actually that makes it easier for everyone recording and evelauation ? ) .
What form of feedback do you prefer for evaluation, is it ok in a DM or in a channel here ?
- Monthly ping for new Text in #lessons or another channel?
- Recording uploaded in a learning channel ?
- Evaluation ( all ways allowed, i think if people are in the same time zone a Voicechat/Discord might be usefull, i think a DM or channel post is also ok )
-> What kind if evaluation do you prefer ?
@dusty oriole
All options would work as a feedback medium,
The advantage of a dm is that no one sees it and a longer conversation can be engaged in.
The advantages of a channel post is that everyone sees it and they might pick up on a few of their own mistakes from the feedback given to another.
A voice channel feedback method would also be really great! The server has locked two people voice channels so there wont be any interruptions
It could be worth including a note at the end of the monthly post, which says something like:
„Let us know if you’d prefer your feedback to be given privately, in the server or in a voice channel :)“
I think a ping in lessons would quickly get lost since its only a monthly occurrence, it might be worth asking pferd if we can put it in #study-tasks.
Recordings posted in #writing since its a slow channel and not filled with any chatter
Feedback in #beginner-german would probably be the most appropriate spot for channel based written feedback
Le me know if there anything else you like to discuss
@dusty oriole @glad fjord
@dusty oriole @vagrant python
Ich dachte, ein Zungenbrecher und ein kleiner Auszug von ein Buch oder etwas Ähnliches wäre gut als Vorlesungsmittel, wozu hat Herm auch Gedichte vorgeschlagen.
Ich glaube, dass es schon ein bisschen Interesse an Gedichte im Server gibt, jemand hat sogar nach einem Spezialisten Kanal darauf gefragt. Also denke ich, dass Gedichte für Ausspracheübung eine tolle Ergänzung dieses Servers wäre
Also, als Übung:
- Zungenbrecher
- Gedichtauszug/komplettes Gedicht, falls es kurz ist
- etwas einfaches für Anfänger: vielleicht ein Dialog oder ein kurzer Ausschnitt aus einem Buch
Um der Zeitaufwand der auswertenden Person zu reduzieren, sollten die Texte (für jedes Stück) maximal 2 Minuten brauchen, auszusprechen
Hmm vielleicht mit 2 Minuten hört man nicht genug Deutsch, 3 Minuten wäre auch handlich
Since we have the #study-tasks channel now, I don't think a ping/role is strictly necessary. People will know there's a new task each time a new message is posted in #study-tasks (and it won't be that frequent that they can't check it manually).
As for where to post it, maybe just directly into #beginner-german is good. Posting in #writing isn't necessarily a bad idea, but I think it's a bit counter-intuitive, and not to mention, people might want to post a bunch of recordings.
Like they might post one, get corrected, post another, get corrected, etc. and it can quickly fill up #writing so texts don't get seen.
Thats fair practice is the better spot

Gedicht Steffen Jacobs (~1968)
Begegnung
Zwischen uns ist was. Das bringts:
Zwei Körper aufs schärfste verzahnt.
Gleich als ich dich sah, habe ich es geahnt:
Zwischen uns ist was. Da wird noch was draus.
Zwischen uns war was. Das wars:
Wir haben uns kaum in die Augen geschaut.
Nur unter den Nägeln ein Abrieb von Haut
Zwischen uns war was. Das war dann wohl nichts.
War da noch etwas? Ach was.
Wer redet mir hier ins Gewissen?
Ich weiß nichts von dir und will auch nichts wissen.
Da wär was gewesen?
No ping, but the only thing that gets posted there is study tasks. So if someone looks in the server and sees there's a message there, they automatically know it's a new task.
Achso ergibt Sinn
You can also set your own pings for a channel so you get a ping for every message.
So it gives people the option to turn it on/off on their own.
That’s not a bad idea, i like that a little more, pings can get annoying
Do you think an example recording would be a good idea?
Sure.
If you want you could even write some kind of introduction post which we can pin for reference.
Like "This is how translation tasks work, here's where to post them, here's an example" and so on.
No ping, but the only thing that gets posted there is study tasks. So if someone looks in the server and sees there's a message there, they automatically know it's a new task.
@gaunt bridge Sorry i think it's a bit misleading regarding "ping" i just meant a notification like you wrote above 🙂
Ohh I see.
Should we get a native to read and record the tasks?
Maybe just the Zungenbrecher, there’s a lot of reading there XD
I think the way Pferd does it for translations works fine. @ BlueBottletop the way above looks good to me so everyone can pick a task.
Beim Dialekt bin ich mir aber nicht sicher. Plattdeutsch ist für mich so, als ob es Aliens geschrieben hätten :D, d.h. ich denke da wird es schwierig für einige zu bewerten bzw. jemanden zu finden der einwandfrei die Dialekte beherrscht.
I just saw some Dialekte Zungenbrecher and thought they might be a fun addition, I can remove it if that better
There are some bayrische ones there and I’m lost, i have absolutely no understanding
z.B. An Oachkatz´lschwoaf muast mid umaran zwoaring vitrioiöi eiöin.
Me: ??? ?? ? ? ???
Oachkatz = Eichhörnchen but that’s all I’ve got XD
Nah don't remove it, i like the idea and it is funny, and the purpose is to learn sth. about the language so it's open to everyone to do it 🙂 .
I think you'll find someone here for evaluation since the server is pretty populated .
Draft intro:
Hello everyone!
The German Learning and Discussion server is GLaD to introduce a new monthly task for everyone! Whooo!
These tasks are focused around improving German pronunciation.
Every month some reading tasks will be published in #study-tasks and as a learner of German you can read out and record some or all of the tasks and a member of the community will evaluate your pronunciation.
Monthly there will be:
- 1-2 Hochdeutsch tongue twisters and 1 dialectal
- An excerpt from a German text, such as a book
- one poem or poem extract
- And at least one accompanying recording
If you’re a beginner and the texts seem too formidable, it’s okay, just read out a sentence or two and slowly to texts will stop being so scary.
To receive an evaluation:
Please post your recordings in #beginner-german and a member of the community will get back to you! Your recordings can be either shared as an uploaded file or as a link to a file sharing service, which would be optional if you have many recordings.
Feel free to also request how you’d like to receive your feedback; through a message or in one of the voice channels on the server.
If you’d like a certain sound in the tongue twisters to be included in the next months items, then feel free to request it!
There are of course shy people, but it would be of most benefits to learners if the evaluation is posted in public rather than dms.
I think it is ok and kinda important to receive some feedback in private and public form.
Depending on the region/language one recording may sound ok to one person but "not ok/different" to another from another region with a lot of dialects.
I think as someone who learns a new language regarding pronunciation it is important to get feedback from multiple persons/regions,
because the best option in my opinion is to receive feedback via dm and public depending on the preference of each person.
There was a discussion/suggestions about region specific roles, i think this is an option that gives everyone a chance to receive feedback from the D-A-CH region.
An advantage on this server is actually that you'll have as a learner a variety of the options, because we have native members from germany, austria and switzerland.
Regardless if a person is shy or not, i think it is important to give someone an option to receive feedback via dm or in public.
@balmy steppe
I can see an advantage to public, ill change the sentence to: ‚through a message or in one of the voice channels on the server.‘
If the feedback public then more people can chime in and comment on what sounds fine in other accents
I still think its important to keep standard hochdeutsch in mind that, that way beginners wont build habits like isch
What’s the verdict on the intro, have I missed anything else?
It might take a while before some people get around to reading it.
But I said to the mods to read it when they get a chance to make sure there's nothing important missing.
@glad fjord the 'monthly there will be' section reads like there would only be a recording of the dialectal tongue twister
Is that correct ? 🤔
You can also set your own pings for a channel so you get a ping for every message.
@gaunt bridge Wie?
ich antworte euch morgen
ist schon sehr gut, was du geschrieben hast, blauer Flaschenverschluss
@chrome shadow yes, if i can get one. Should i consider also recording some of the other tasks too
As an example
Well from a learning perspective the dialectal one is probably the least important one, that's why I'm asking lmao
Fair enough
I was also thinking a recording of the long text or tongue twisters would be beneficial
Should one or both of those be included instead?
Well in an ideal world we would have both but I'm afraid that's a bit too much effort
However, since you can probably find a lot of tongue twisters and their pronunciations online I'd say the text makes more sense
On the other hand that also requires significantly more effort than the tongue twister so idk
What I'm also a bit worried about is the corrections of the recordings but I guess we'll just have to see how it turns out
Well before deciding on a fixed format you can also give it a trial run and see how it turns out in practice, what the participation is like from both actual participants and people giving feedback and then it would be easier to decide how to run it long-term.
Makes a lot of sense, this first one will definitely be a trial
In regard to the recordings, im quite happy to read the text myself
When is the maiden voyage?
When the mods say go time! So probably sometime tomorrow ;))
I have a recording of the text extract: reading out loud is harder than i remember XD
Let me know if i missed any important sounds, else ill include it with the post
Hmm i messed up a bit at the end, with the alle stumble and „doch noch“ instead of „oder noch“. And tatsächlich is always mean, would someone more accustomed with German like to give it a go too
Define "important sounds". It's pretty good. The bit that stands out the most are your doch noch and ausmacht at the end, where the ch is more like a k.
I usually fumble with hätten and könnte vs hatten and konnte
I can try it again or leave it at that
@vagrant python I dunno, I thought you can.
Ah, well if we're gonna go into details, the hätten sterben können was okay. The würde was more on the wurde side though and the Atem geschöpft sounded kinda like "Atmen geschüpt". The E in es dauertE could be a bit more pronounced, there's something at the end there but it's very weak. And verwiesen not verweisen. I'd say that's all I could point out as far as sounds go. But honestly it really doesn't have to be perfect. Shouldn't, even. Since your recording is meant to serve as an example, it might motivate people if they see that others make mistakes too and it'll leave more room for example corrections to be made.
rule 9 now
Since we have the #study-tasks channel now, I don't think a ping/role is strictly necessary

How to get Corrections
You may do as much or as little as you like! If the tasks seem intimidating, try reading out just a few sentences. Over time, the sentences will stop being scary.
When you have a recording ready, post it in the #beginner-german channel and someone will eventually get back to you and offer you feedback. This can take a little time, so please be patient! You can use https://vocaroo.com/ if on desktop or simply use your phone to make a recording and upload the file in #beginner-german.
If you prefer to receive feedback privately, then that's okay too! Please write a short message in #beginner-german asking for help and a nice member of the community will eventually offer their help.

Hier ist ein Vorschlag wie die erste Aufgabe aussehen könnte. Mir ist zwei Sachen aufgefallen, als ich das vorbereitet habe:
- Wir sollten einen Vorschlag bieten, wie man eine Aufnahme machen kann. Was hast du z.B. getan, BlueBottletop?
- Wir sollten ein Dokument mit den alten und aktuellen Aufgaben erstellen, damit man sie sehen und ausprobieren kann.
- Der Text und das Gedicht sind ein bisschen lang. Ich frage mich, ob man deswegen abgeschreckt wird.
Wir können aber es gerne ausprobieren und sehen, wie es läuft.
Blue probably did a phone voice recording. For desktop users https://vocaroo.com/ generally works pretty well and doesn't necessarily require registering or anything.
ja, das ist mir auch eingefallen. Ich hab vocaroo schon vorher genutzt und es war ziemlich einfach (wenn mein Mikrofon mitgemacht hat
)
@vagrant python ich kann kleinere Ausschnitte finden, damit die Texte nicht so erschreckend aussehen.
Arrem hat recht ich habe mein Handy verwendet. Aber ich habe von dieser Webseite gehört und sie scheint ein gute Option fürs Aufnehmen zu sein
Ich kann das Dokument erstellen, ich habe schon diese in einem Dokument, und ich würde gern derjenige sein, der Neue monatlich findet, also es wäre nicht schwer sie zusammenzusetzen
Note that his post is just a proposal, the group is not there yet.
@chrome shadow
i think it is important to see the feedback not as an "correction" judged by one person, that's actually the point I am a bit worried about.
I know alot people from Asia,Afrika and EU who speak really decent German and even if one thing might sound a bit weird/wrong, the message and context they are talking about is clear, simple and correct(model of communication).
I am just thinking that a too negative feedback can demotivate some new or inexperienced learners and this shouldn't be the purpose/case of the lesson/task nor this server, so I would try to avoid it in public and give some specific feedback via dm ,
so no one feels blamed in public, that doesn't mean that the person with giving the feedback had the intention to blame someone, but you know communication is pretty complex 🙂 .
I think a good option is not just the text form but also via a Voice-chat 1:1 so the person receiving the feedback can practice a bit with the person who is giving the feedback and write down some notes to improve sth. .
I agree with you both btw. that the dialectal one is less important and the text makes more sense, but I think some short tongue twister are actually a good smol detailed lesson ?!
@fathom vector
Is it ok if the format stays kinda "generic" with some options for the next months and will be adjusted at a later date , regardless if it is the first or second task ? I think it's important to name/show the options for the learners or have multiple options for the form of the feedback or offer people to request something regarding this topic.
I think an option for a new member like " request xyz regarding mno " in #community-discussion or other channel should be written down in each task, to have sth. adjusted in the next task ?
The way BlueBottletop wrote is imo perfect, that a member of the server can choose the form of the feedback and maybe ask someone again in 2-3 weeks if it got missed (regardless the reasons) .
I
@vagrant python
Well it's not my idea, I'm just offering my own thoughts, so I'm also not in the position to give out any okays, so I'd direct your question to Blue.
As far as I, as a moderator, am concerned, whatever is agreed upon is okay. We don't really tend to dictate how lessons are run, our job is to support people who want to hold sessions, not tell them that they should do it our way.
@dusty oriole @fathom vector i havent fully understood the question, but if its regarding having a lesson for the tongue twisters, i think thats a good idea
I run sessions, that should tell you everything you need to know lol
Yeah and hecke who can only spell correctly 30% of the time.
@vagrant python in Bezug auf die Aufgabe-Ankündigung, ich möchte ein paar Sachen vorschlagen.
Könnte es etwas Abstand zwischen dem Ende des Gedichts und der „How to Receive corrections“ Titel geben.
in deinem letzen Satz hast du ‚if you have any feedback for the writing group‘ können wir ,writing group, mit ,pronunciation group, austauschen.
Und als letztens, es wäre schön wenn wir einen Satz wie „if the tasks seem too intimidating, its okay just read out a few sentences and slowly they’ll stop being so scary“ einschließen könnte
this is a screenshot from a big english learner's discord server. i thinka "correct me" role would be really helpful in this server too
@dusty oriole Being corrected is the default on this server.
oh i guess i havent been here long enough to see any of it
We prefer if people add "don't correct me" if they feel that being corrected is a problem.
Otherwise people will be corrected freely (for German, that is).
people don’t always bother correcting every little detail cause it tends to interrupt the flow of conversation
@glad fjord
How to Receive corrections“ Titel geben.
habe ich geändert. Das liegt leider daran, dass eine Nachricht in Discord nur 2.000 Charaktere erhalten darf, also muss man den Text in zwei Nachrichten teilen.
in deinem letzen Satz hast du ‚if you have any feedback for the writing group‘ können wir ,writing group, mit ,pronunciation group, austauschen.
Oopsie, das habe ich korrigiert.
Und als letztens, es wäre schön wenn wir einen Satz wie „if the tasks seem too intimidating, its okay just read out a few sentences and slowly they’ll stop being so scary“ einschließen könnte
habe ich eingearbeitet.
Wenn du mit den Änderungen zufrieden bist, können wir schon damit loslegen.
@vagrant python ich würde gerne die Aufgaben selbst veröffentlichen :D)
Das kann ich sogar heute heute Abend machen :))
Ich meine, an meinem Abend also in einigen Stunden
Hmmm in Botchannel gerade eben
The joke is Dativ.
Beitreten + dativ nicht akk?
Achso hab den Scherz jetzt versanden

Okay time to rock and roll pronunciation is go
@glad fjord When are you planning to post the intro post?
Oh, but I wanted a summary post to pin in #study-tasks so it's easy for people to see information about it.
But it's fine if you don't want one.
to pin it?
i can still post one
im also thinking that the tasks might change to exclude the poem
Yeah, so people can see what the pronunciations task are about without having to ask or scroll back through #announcements
makes sense
Why no poem? 😔
hmmmmm a couple of people have done it, and they read out the tongue twisters and the book extract
Well, poems are hard because you don't know the intended pacing unless you're pretty into poetry.
personally i really like including the poem, because it has a different rhythum when read out, but it will be sad if no one reads it
Like I tried reading it but it just didn't sound right.
maybe i just picked a bad poem couse i though so too, a couple of lines were a bit awkward
If you want to include poems, it might be best to include an example reading of the poem so people can hear the pacing of it before reading.
i can give it a go reading and include that for the next one
Sure.
or i can find a recording of a reading on the web
I would post more recordings but I don't want to post too many and make it hard for people to correct.
pooooost them the more the merrier!
im thinking, the more people see these recordings in practice, the more likey they are to do one themselves
ill write up an intro probably this evening and post it in study tasks
i dont think i have pin powers, so i need someone else to pin it
Yeah but the point of it is to get feedback, right?
Yeah the point is feedback
You could post them at different times and fix any errors between each posting?
It is possible to make the Activities vc mute upon enter? In any case it's been mostly less problematic with interruptions than in lessons vc
Right now you can just ask someone to turn off the speaking perms manually if you want.
Also, I think you can use priority speaker mode, right? Maybe that helps.
oh, I see. hecke hates the auto mute, but she doesn't seem to mind stopping lessons to address the persons entering
also that sometimes they know lessons vc, but don't know about #lessons
Hates what auto mute?
Like how when people enter the chat, they're already muted. And she has to unmute everyone 🙂
What do you mean? @balmy steppe I don't think that's a thing.
It's the same thing I requested. Voice Permission: Speak
Oh right. But that only takes 1 click to turn on/off and you can just turn it on before you start the session.
Yeah.
It's not like anyone is actually muted.
But they all come in muted. Then you have to unmute them
Well the microphone is disabled
No you don't... You just turn on Speak in the channel settings.
Hi
@vivid panther Hey, what's up?
Nothing much you?
Same, but this channel isn't a general discussion channel. It's for discussing stuff related to community projects on the server.
Do you have a question about that? @vivid panther
Oh my bad
Np.
Right. But I'm talking about if you want people to come in with no mic enabled, well, we've discussed this. I'm not sure if I need to say it again 🙂
Okay.
I'll talk more thoroughly about it, maybe tomorrow
@gaunt bridge it server mutes them
so last time I had to manually unmute everyone until syro turned it off
@midnight dune Like I said, if the speaking perms are off, just ask a mod to turn them on.
yeah will do
And if you ever come across issues anywhere in the server btw, you should just let a mod know, because it's usually something easy to fix.
oh I just asked a mod then yeah
idk it wasnt that much of a big deal
I just thought to mention it since you said its not like theyre actually muted
Yeah, they're not.
It's just when they go in a channel with permissions turned off.
It definitely shouldn't server mute anyone.
If someone is server muted (with the red symbol), it means they were muted manually by someone.
Oh. Do they can unmute themselves?
Its a great feature hecke.
You just cant appreciate its awesomeness.
Although it's definitely less awesome at the start of sessions.
The full awesome increases as the sessions continue
they were server muted, not just generally
if I see it again I'll take a screencap of it
@balmy steppe The way it works afaik is they are muted (grey icon) when they enter the channel and then the mute status is reset to the previous value when they go to a different channel.
Why do some people have tags like gaming and science?
Are there hidden chat rooms for certain topics?
There sure are. But they're not hidden. We mention every one of them in #282831147942281216, which is always a good read if you want to use a server effectively.
Haha, my bad 😊
Hello!
Hey
Thanks for referring me to the right place, I'm still a bit lost
And probably due to so many people being at different learning stages
that would be doable
But I've seen this tackled differently
In different language servers
Or you can do as you suggest and try something shorter
Yeah, sometimes we read stuff from Deutsch Perfekt magazine. Those are good for reading sessions.
definitely, I'm in different reading clubs for other purposes and people can't read for more than an hour
Let's read Goethe's complete bibliography kek.
yeah, some Hegel to brush up on that B2 grammar xD
I tried a session that I thought would take 1.5 hours and that was like ... Long and we didn't even finished the story
I've run a lot of reading sessions.
And I'm not sure what the solution is
Wissenchaft Der Logik is a nice one for beginners.
But after you run one you might have an idea what you want to try and do
You might be right, Trax. Stories are hard work and only for the really committed. I'd love to try Deutsch Perfekt articles every other day.
how do you gather people?
you announce it in the general one?
You get a role. Or ask for help from a session holder or mod
What's the relevant role?
You should start by joining in some sessions and seeing how they work first.
Session holder
You're so right Basementality
Wolfgang Borchert has some nice and short short stories. I saw his work listed on the google docs resources thing, so a lot of you might have read him already.
What level is that Jake?
No, I haven't Jake!
Not sure, but the vocab doesn't look too crazy.
Regarding the bot, I'm really lost. Can I change my own status myself? Where is the bot?
@slender canopy I recommend to read #282831147942281216
It will answer a lot of your questions.
You might be right 😄
Those are nice and short Jake
Wow that was a painless amount of code
what I don't understand is
lessons are announced in the #lessons group by users
but you can't see a whole schedule of the activities taking place
No, because usually lessons are not scheduled in advance.
It's not like people are doing a reading session every Tuesday at 5pm or something.
It's more like "I have time this Sunday, I'll do a reading session at 5pm on that day".
However, we're working on a way to schedule and see lessons.
We also have one of those, but people don't use it.
oh
We're working on a way that will be integrated into the bot.
cool
So people can just use a command to add/view upcoming sessions.
I have another question: the reading sessions you've done involved actually reading the text in the session?
Yes.
my idea would be like "read this article and we'll talk about it"
Everyone reads a sentence or two and then translates what they read.
You are welcome to do it that way if you want. But that means you have to hope that people will actually read it ahead of time.
ok 😄
And think about what you want to do if someone who hasn't read it wants to join.
are there lots of people in here? what kind of attendance do you usually get?
Average would be around 10 people. But it can be anywhere from 1 to like, 40.
Depending on the day, type of session, etc.
first come first served?
What if people join who only want to listen?
If you decide you want to do that for your lesson, feel free to let a moderator know and they can adjust the channel temporarily to those setting.
I don't think there'll be people knocking on the doors to get in will it
ok
what about copyrighted content
you know what I mean?
can I paste links to pdfs that have been extracted from Deutsch Perfekts?
Piracy is against Discord's ToS, but if it's just a pdf and it's publicly accessible online (and doesn't require people to download to access it), then it's not a huge concern.
purrfect
I've seen first come, first serve reading sessions, and those who come late or chose to opt out are ignored.
@gaunt bridge i didn't know a schedule sheet existed
It effectively doesn't.
I'll find it.
This is a schedule that's designed just for hosts and potential hosts to use to help them organize/run sessions: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OAcqlsGLU03iO_BOJPbArAQcVl1XjfDRbCU4ugiYLPg/edit?usp=sharing
is it pinned in any of the channels for easy reference?
No, it hasn't really been used yet.
I'll pin it in here though in case some potential hosts want to try using it.
But idk yet if we're going to have a better option with a bot soon.
😄
remind 10h organide a friday night activity
yes yes yes
@fathom vector
I had no idea it existed base
