This channel provides details about how lessons work, how to attend them, and how to become a lesson host. There are a variety of lessons held on the server and we also welcome ideas for new types of lessons. All lessons are run by volunteers from the community. Please read the sections below for more detailed information about these points.

Summary of the most common types of lessons held on the server:
🔹Reading: Reading a novel, article, or short text together with other attendees. Typically each person reads a few sentences and then translates what they read, although hosts may have their own preferences for how to run the session.
🔹Grammar: Typically the host will provide a short lecture about a specific grammar topic, often with interactive practice exercises included.
🔹Activities: This is anything which does not fit into another group. It can be anything from movies to games to debating.

You are free to attend any lesson on the server, and you do not need to sign up or ask for permission.

The lessons are held in a voice channel and there is also a text channel where you can type. Every host will recommend certain CEFR levels for their sessions, depending on the material being covered, so if you join a lesson that is targeting a level significantly different from your own, it may be best to just listen along, so that the target group can benefit more from the lesson.

⚠️ Please make sure to mute yourself locally before you join a lesson, and only talk if you have a question about the lesson or the host calls you to speak or read. If you interrupt a lesson or have background noise, the host may mute you. If you are muted during a lesson, please contact a moderator using #report-issue to resolve the issue.

🧑‍🏫 Some lessons may have additional rules that the host will inform you about before the lesson starts.

There are many ways to keep track of upcoming lessons, such as:

🔹Using the Events tab at the top of the server’s channel list and subscribing to the event

#

🔹The aforementioned command also has a link to a Google calendar with all the lessons

🔹When no lesson is taking place, a button at the bottom of #lessons allows you to see the schedule

Keep in mind that lessons are hosted by volunteers and therefore they usually can’t have regular schedules or cater to users in every timezone.

You can get notified about upcoming lessons by going to id:customize and selecting the roles corresponding to the types of lessons that you are interested in!

Usually hosts will ping you 3 times for a lesson: once when the lesson is first scheduled, again 30-60 minutes before the lesson is due to start so you can be prepared, and then one last time when the lesson actually begins.

If you would like to stop receiving pings, feel free to click the buttons in id:customize again to remove your notification roles.

All of our lessons are hosted by volunteers who generously donate their time and energy into teaching German on our server. The hosts aim to support you the best they can, so we ask that you show understanding and sympathy towards them.

In particular, you should avoid:
🔹Complaining about dates, times, topics or target levels of lessons
🔹Needlessly pinging or DMing hosts with things unrelated to their lessons

Anyone can apply to become a host! Since hundreds of people attend our lessons, we aim to ensure that the lessons they attend are beneficial to them. Because of that, we require every potential host to hold a short demonstration session before they are given Session Holder permissions.

If you’re interested, reach out to us in #report-issue, and we’ll help you out with everything that you need to know.

💡 We would like to highlight the following types of lessons, which we are looking to see more of, as they are either in high demand or there are no hosts currently interested in running them:
🔹Pronunciation sessions: A native speaker (or someone with very good pronunciation) helps learners to improve their pronunciation, by listening to them speak (e.g. reading a sentence from a text) and correcting the mistakes.
🔹Beginner grammar: These have been held many times before but they are very popular and always in demand.

You can suggest and discuss ideas for lessons in #community-discussion. As already mentioned, lessons are hosted by volunteers, and every host is free to pick the topics that they are interested in, so we cannot guarantee that we will be able to provide the lessons you suggest.

If you’d be interested in running the lessons that you’d like to see yourself, see the section above this one for information on how to apply to become a host.
