We are introducing a new writing task: The 5 Words Writing Challenge!
It's quite simple: you should write a text consisting of at least 5 sentences and using all 5 of the words of a prompt at least once.

FAQ:
Q: How long does my text have to be?
A: Preferably not too short, but there are no strict limits, so you can make it as short or as long as you'd like. Just don't forget that you should write at least 5 sentences!

Q: Do I necessarily have to write a text? Are other forms of writing such as poems allowed?
A: Feel free to write whatever you wish! Think of the writing task as an inspiration. You can show off your creativity and write a long text with a narrative or simply write 5 basic sentences as practice.

Q: Does my text have to be cohesive and make sense?
A: It's strongly encouraged that you write a coherent text, but it's not strictly necessary. For example, if you are a beginner and can't write texts yet you could write 5 separate sentences using each word.

Q: Do I have to use the words exactly as they are given?
A: No, the prompts contain the base forms of the words, feel free to use other grammatical forms as needed to fit in your sentences.

Q: Can I pick both prompts or a prompt that doesn't correspond to my level?
**A:**The difficulty of the prompts doesn't refer to the expected level of the text, but to the difficulty of the words themselves. Feel free to pick whichever/however many prompts you'd like.

Q: Do I have to use the words in order?
A: No, feel free to use them in whatever order you want.

Long Text

Poem

Steffen Jacobs (~1968) - Begegnung

Ach was.
Wer redet mir hier ins Gewissen?
Da wär was gewesen? Das wüsste ich aber.

Aus Kurz Gesagt Video: Emergenz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb4YoMjcYM4

Poem
Johan Wolfgang von Goethe (1813) - Gefunden

Ich ging im Walde
So für mich hin,
Und nichts zu suchen,
Das war mein Sinn.

Im Schatten sah ich
Ein Blümchen stehn,
Wie Sterne leuchtend,
Wie Äuglein schön.

Ich wollt es brechen,
Da sagt es fein:
Soll ich zum Welken
Gebrochen sein?

Ich grub's mit allen
Den Würzlein aus.
Zum Garten trug ich's
Am hübschen Haus

Und pflanzt es wieder
Am stillen Ort;
Nun zweigt es immer
Und blüht so fort.

Pronunciation Challenges (June)
Tongue Twisters

Long Text

Poem
Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) - Dämmernd liegt der Sommerabend

Dämmernd liegt der Sommerabend
Über Wald und grünen Wiesen;
Goldner Mond im blauen Himmel
Strahlt herunter, duftig labend.

An dem Bache zirpt die Grille,
Und es regt sich in dem Wasser,
Und der Wandrer hört ein Plätschern
Und ein Atmen in der Stille.

Dorten, an dem Bach alleine,
Badet sich die schöne Elfe;
Arm und Nacken, weiß und lieblich,
Schimmern in dem Mondenscheine.

Writing Prompt (June)
Short (Monthly)
What is something interesting you learnt recently about the world that you would like to share?

Word length: 50+

Medium (Monthly)
It's the start of summer and it's getting hot again. Too hot. As the local celebrity wizard/witch, Pferd has hired you to perform a ritual to banish the Sun behind the clouds for the next couple of months. As you really need the cash, you agree and meet Pferd at the highest hill with your assistants.

Things go, however, terribly wrong. Tell us what happened and what you have now been cursed with.

Word length: 200+

Long (April-June)

All your life, you have been very clumsy and extremely accident-prone. Not a month goes by where you don't have some weird near-fatal accident. For example, last month you got struck by lightning - despite it being a clear day! The scientists are still trying to explain that one.

Fortunately, you are also apparently the luckiest person in the world, because you keep seem to surive unscatched. No matter what happens, something else equally unusual or miraculous occurs that saves your life.

Well, it turns out you have the most undesirable soul EVER and no deity wants you in their heavenly abode. They keep trying to pawn you off onto other deities by arranging "accidents" (they're not allowed to directly kill you; some sort of celestial "rule"), but the other deity always saves you.

You have recently discovered this fact, and ever since you seem to get an accident daily. It's making your life difficult, and you want it to finally stop. The only way to do that is to take find out what exactly is wrong with your soul.

Writing Prompt (July)
Short (Monthly)
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?

Word length: 50+

Medium (Monthly)
While learning German or another foreign language, what have you personally found to be the most effective method of practising and learning the language when first starting? How do you think it differs from learning as a beginner compared to an advanced learner? Should you concentrate more on grammar at the beginning or rather later?

Give your opinion to the questions, and language learning in general.

Word length: 200+

Long (July-September)

Aliens have known about humanity for a long time. When the first discovered our planet, they found our civilisation primitive and unrefined. So they decided to sit back and watch, waiting for the right moment to make contact.

However, our civilisation is vastly different than theirs and they are immensely curious about our culture and what we have invented. So a scouting team secretly lands on the planet and mingles with the locals. They are all very much amazed by things we consider quite unremarkable and boring, such as fast food and soap dramas.

Describe their experiences.

TEXT:

Long Text

“Poem“
NENA (1984) - irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann

Im Sturz durch Raum und Zeit
Richtung Unendlichkeit
Fliegen Motten in das Licht
Genau wie du und ich

Irgendwie fängt irgendwann
Irgendwo die Zukunft an
Ich warte nicht mehr lang
Liebe wird aus Mut gemacht
Denk nicht lange nach
Wir fahren auf Feuerrädern
Richtung Zukunft durch die Nacht

Gib mir die Hand
Ich bau dir ein Schloss aus Sand
Irgendwie irgendwo irgendwann

Short (Monthly)
What’s one of your favourite games? What is it about and why do you enjoy it?

Word length: 50+

Medium (Monthly)
You wake up one day with a horrible headache and no recollection of the night before. You slowly get out of bed in a drowsy stupor and stumble into the living room, where you notice a large horse watching television. The horse turns to you and grins.

“Wow, finally awake, huh! Last night was crazy!”

That definitely came out of the horse’s month. Just what happened last night?

Word length: 200+

Long (July-September)

Aliens have known about humanity for a long time. When the first discovered our planet, they found our civilisation primitive and unrefined. So they decided to sit back and watch, waiting for the right moment to make contact.

However, our civilisation is vastly different than theirs and they are immensely curious about our culture and what we have invented. So a scouting team secretly lands on the planet and mingles with the locals. They are all very much amazed by things we consider quite unremarkable and boring, such as fast food and soap dramas.

Describe their experiences.

Word length: 1000+

Servus Leute!

4.) Erkläre kurz, was "Beginen" waren. Wie reagierte die Kirche auf diese?
5.) Was beschreibt der folgende Text?
6.) Nenne 2 Aktivitäten, die nur Männer ausführen durften.

Important note: Currently I'm not creating my own homework sheets as I'm busy with uni work, but I'll make homework sheets for all the sessions I've missed once I have more time. However, if anyone feels like creating sheets for any of the past lessons, feel free to make them, get them double-checked by a native speaker, and I'll add them into the folders for that lesson.

All previous material relevant to the lessons can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/14MPdMqPTH9XVocvy__Hw7cMz5jSXZux-

You're not expected to hand this homework in to anyone. It is intended for self-study only. If you need help with this worksheet, please make use of our usual learning channels such as #questions and #beginner-german.

If you're interested in being alerted each time a new session is announced, you can type >sub Grammar in #botchannel to subscribe to all future pings for Grammar sessions.

Writing Prompt (September)
Short (Monthly)
Describe what was happening in your earliest memory.

Word length: 50+

Medium (Monthly)
You are a dragon whose job it is to protect a cursed princess. However, you hate the job: it’s terribly boring, the princess hardly makes for good conversation, and the nearby food is tasteless. Whenever a knight comes to save the princess, you try your best to play along and let them win, but you keep accidentally killing them.

Tell us how the knights met their unfortunate fates.

C Level

  1. Most western countries do not recognise polygamous marriages, and consider bigamy a crime. Several countries also prohibit people from living a polygamous lifestyle. This is the case in some states of the United States where the criminalization of a polygamous lifestyle originated as anti-Mormon laws, although they are rarely enforced.
  2. High treason, as defined in Section 81 of the German criminal code is defined as a violent attempt against the existence or the constitutional order of the Federal Republic of Germany, carrying a penalty of life imprisonment or a fixed term of at least ten years. In less serious cases, the penalty is 1–10 years in prison.
  3. In some cases where the system of law is not well-implemented, bribes may be a way for companies to continue their businesses. In the case, for example, custom officials may harass a certain firm or production plant, officially stating they are checking for irregularities, halting production or stalling other normal activities of a firm. The disruption may cause losses to the firm that exceed the amount of money to pay off the official. Bribing the officials is a common way to deal with this issue in countries where there exists no firm system of reporting these semi-illegal activities.

Writing Prompt (October)
Short (Monthly)
Tell us about a spooky encounter (real or imagined) you have experienced.

Word length: 50+

Medium (Monthly)
Despite your best efforts, you cannot seem to permanently die. You have been shot, stabbed, electrocuted, crushed, sliced, eaten by sharks, suffocated, blown up, and literally bored to death. No matter what you do, after every attempt, you experience a brief period of darkness and then wake up in your bed with no signs of injury.

But, one day, after 10,000 years, you finally figure out how to kill yourself successfully. What did you do?

Word length: 200+

Long (October-December)

This week has been horrible. On Monday you woke up to an announcement from some godly voice that you are a side character in someone else’s main story. You didn’t believe it at first, of course. Clearly you were still dreaming.

However, the godly voice persisted. On Tuesday, it started telling you in excruciating detail about a future event on Wednesday and Thursday. First, you would bump into an old friend you have not seen for years – the main character, the godly voice said. Then, the next day, you would see the old friend again in a completely different place, and they would tell you something very unexpected.

And sure enough, that is exactly what happened. The godly voice had predicted all of it perfectly. It told you to act, to take control of your fate. Don’t let yourself be the side character in someone else’s story.

Describe your struggle.

Here are the sentences for the month! This month's theme is Hygiene (Hygiene).

drowsy plinth
#

A Level

  1. Clean your room right now!
  2. We regularly wash our towels.
  3. I need to buy some shampoo.
  4. Please tidy up your mess.
  5. She always brushes her teeth after waking up.
  6. I always take a shower after work.
  7. My girlfriend wants me to shave off my beard.
  8. You should iron your clothes before your interview.
  9. The girls are brushing their hair.
  10. All the toilet paper was sold out.

B Level

  1. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap before you start cooking.
  2. Hygiene refers to conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases.
  3. Disinfectants are frequently used in hospitals, dental surgeries, kitchens, and bathrooms to kill infectious organisms.
  4. Cook foods for the appropriate length of the time and at the appropriate time to kill pathogens.
  5. It is important that oral hygiene be carried out on a regular basis to enable prevention of dental disease and bad breath.
  6. Research shows that, if widely practised, hand washing with soap could reduce diarrhoea by almost fifty percent and respiratory infections by nearly twenty-five percent.
  7. About 30 restaurants were closed down last year due to unsanitary conditions.
  8. Regular bathing was a hallmark of Roman civilization. Elaborate baths were constructed in urban areas to serve the public, who typically demanded the infrastructure to maintain personal cleanliness.
  9. Personal hygiene is improved and maintained more accurately and easily with the use of both toilet paper and a bidet as compared to the use of toilet paper alone.
  10. Keeping your finger and toenails trimmed and in good shape will prevent problems such as hang nails and infected nail beds.
#

C Level

  1. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends hand washing with ash if soap is not available in critical situations, e.g. schools without access to soap and other difficult situations like post-emergencies where use of (clean) sand is recommended, too. Use of ash is common in rural areas of developing countries and has in experiments been shown at least as effective as soap for removing pathogens.
  2. Excessive cleaning of the ear canals can result in infection or irritation. The ear canals require less care than other parts of the body because they are sensitive and mostly self-cleaning; that is, there is a slow and orderly migration of the skin lining of the ear canal from the eardrum to the outer opening of the ear.
  3. A little dirt never hurt. But in today's super-clean world, vaccinations, anti-bacterial soaps, and airtight doors and windows are keeping dirt and disease-causing germs at bay. While staying germ-free can prevent the spread of disease and infections, leading a cleanlier lifestyle may be responsible for an increase in allergies among children.

#

C Level

  1. The black mamba is the most feared snake in Africa because of its size, aggression, venom toxicity and speed of onset of symptoms following envenomation, and is classified as a snake of medical importance by the World Health Organization.

When they overheat, reptiles shelter in the shade to cool down, and at night many species are virtually immobile.

Some ducks in the stream notice your arrival. They waddle up to you, likely hoping for some bread crumbs, you imagine. You show them your empty hands, but that doesn’t deter them. Instead, they stop in unison at your feet and stare up at you expectedly.

“What do you want?” you ask, half-amused.

Hey everyone! We’ve decided to hold a little competition on the server for Valentine’s Day. Everyone is welcome to join in, even Native Speakers.

The task: Write any piece of writing about any theme related to Valentine’s Day! Feel free to use your imagination, or take an abstract approach. Or just write a simple romantic poem or letter! It can be any form of writing, including fiction, non-fiction, or anything in between, as long as it follows the rules below. There are no word limits, but try to keep it short!

The rules: The text must be written in German, and it must follow the server rules!

How to enter: Create a Google Doc containing your writing. Post it in #writing for corrections (make sure to ping me to let me know it exists), or send it to my DMs directly! You have until Feb 14th to submit something, and you’re always welcome to change or withdraw your entry at any time - just let me know. Please note that the texts will be posted publicly (see below), so don’t send me anything you don’t want other people to see.

The prize: On Valentine’s Day, I’ll post all the submitted texts in a summary here, and a bonus (optional) study task that you won’t know about until the day! The winner(s) will get a special mention and perhaps some other surprises (depending on how the competition goes). Good luck!

By the way, don’t worry if you’re a complete beginner. We won’t be judging you based on your German abilities and we’ll consider everyone’s individual skill level while making the decision. The goal is simply to have fun and practice our German together. ❤️

And, as always, if you have any thoughts or concerns, feel free to share them in #community-discussion!

Pronunciation Challenges (June 2020)
Tongue Twisters

Long Text

Poem
Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) - Dämmernd liegt der Sommerabend

Dämmernd liegt der Sommerabend
Über Wald und grünen Wiesen;
Goldner Mond im blauen Himmel
Strahlt herunter, duftig labend.

An dem Bache zirpt die Grille,
Und es regt sich in dem Wasser,
Und der Wandrer hört ein Plätschern
Und ein Atmen in der Stille.

Dorten, an dem Bach alleine,
Badet sich die schöne Elfe;
Arm und Nacken, weiß und lieblich,
Schimmern in dem Mondenscheine.

Tongue Twisters

  • Hans hört hinterm Holzhaus Hubert Hansen heiser husten.

Long Text

Poem
Herbstgefühl von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Fetter grüne, du Laub, Am Rebengeländer Hier mein Fenster herauf! Gedrängter quellet, Zwillingsbeeren, and reifet Schneller und glänzend voller! Euch brütet der Mutter Sonne Scheideblick, euch umsäuselt Des holden Himmels Fruchtende Fülle; Euch kühlet des Mondes Freundlicher Zauberhauch, Und euch betauen, ach! Aus diesen Augen Der ewig belebenden Liebe Vollschwellende Tränen.

#

  2. The number of stars you see in the night sky depends on several variables, including your location’s light pollution and your own vision. In large, light-polluted cities, only a few dozen of the brightest stars may be visible – though that doesn't mean there's nothing to observe from a city. But in a clear, dark sky, a couple thousand stars become visible to the unaided eye.
  3. Space telescopes can be used to observe astronomical objects at wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that cannot penetrate the Earth's atmosphere, and are thus impossible to observe using ground-based telescopes. The Earth's atmosphere is opaque to ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays and is partially opaque to infrared radiation so observations in these portions of the electromagnetic spectrum are best carried out from a location above the atmosphere of our planet.

Hi everyone! Today I have a new study task for you (in particular, for beginners). A few people have asked recently about how to find simple listening exercises. There are plenty of advanced listening resources out there, but it can be harder to find something suitable for absolute beginners. Listening is a really tough skill to get started in, and it requires a lot of practice, so we want to help you out by offering some basic listening exercises. The exercises are created and edited by me but recorded by native speakers from our server.

The first exercise is relatively easy, using words most beginners will already know (although a couple of them might be more difficult). In future, we’ll try to vary the difficulty and style of speech a bit, but we’ll always try to make it suitable for beginners.

As usual, because this is a new idea we’re trialling, we’d love to hear your feedback. Please react with ❤️ to this message if you like the idea and want to see more, and please ping me in #community-discussion to give feedback, whether it be about things you like or things that you think need to be improved. If there’s any particular style of listening exercise you want to see in future, feel free to share that as well.

In the audio provided, you’ll hear 10 words spoken by a native speaker. Your task is to identify the works by listening and trying to understand the sounds. Answers will be provided sometime later.

  7. Are they sleeping together?
  8. I am going to sleep, goodnight!
  9. He will sleep over with a friend tonight.
  10. She cried herself to sleep.

B Level

  1. She overslept and missed her train to work. Now she has to wait 30 minutes for the next one.
  2. They always share a kiss before falling asleep.
  3. It is recommended to sleep between seven and nine hours every night.

  10. Children need many hours of sleep per day in order to develop and function properly: up to 18 hours for newborn babies, with a declining rate as a child ages.
#

C Level

  1. Kids tend to sleepwalk within an hour or two of falling asleep and may walk around for anywhere from a few seconds to 30 minutes. It's difficult to wake someone up while they're sleepwalking. When awakened, a person may feel groggy and disoriented for a few minutes.
  2. In general, animals sleep according to how much they eat – animals that eat food with a lower caloric density sleep less than others. This may explain why herbivores need to spend more time awake, to ensure they get enough food and energy. For example, grazing animals like giraffes and elephants sleep 30 minutes to just a few hours per day, respectively.
  3. One study that tracked the sleeping patterns of people over 13 years found that catching up on sleep by sleeping in on the weekend cancelled out the risk of early death. The caveat is that many of the benefits of catch-up sleep are only achieved after multiple nights or weeks of catching up on sleep. One study found that participants needed an average of four days to recover from just one hour of sleep debt, and another study found that teenagers didn't recover from sleep deprivation until two weeks into the school holidays.

Hi everyone, here's the next beginner listening task! Once again, we have 10 beginner words for you. The task is to listen to the audio and try to figure out the words. This time we have a second exercise as well: for each word from the first audio, we have a sentence showing how the word could be used. This gives two benefits: 1. you can learn to identify the single word in the middle of a sentence, and 2. you can try to figure out the whole sentence, as a more challenging exercise!

Once again, to let us know that you want to see more, you can react to this message with ❤️ to show you appreciate the single-word audios and 💜 to show you want to see more of the sentences (and react with both if you want to see more of both). If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to DM me or post a message in #community-discussion. I'd love to hear your experiences with the exercises and if you feel like it's helped you with your learning. Have fun!
