Announcing the 22.07 Release of NetApp Trident

@everyone Trident is a fully-supported open source project maintained by NetApp. It has been designed from the ground up to help you meet your containerized applications' persistence demands using industry-standard interfaces, such as the Container Storage Interface (CSI).

Trident deploys in Kubernetes clusters as pods and provides dynamic storage orchestration services for your Kubernetes workloads. It enables your containerized applications to quickly and easily consume persistent storage from NetApp’s broad portfolio that includes ONTAP (AFF/FAS/Select/Cloud) , Element (HCI/SolidFire), as well as the Azure NetApp Files service, Cloud Volumes Service on Google Cloud , and the Cloud Volumes Service on AWS.

Trident is also a foundational technology for NetApp's Astra, which addresses your data protection, disaster recovery, portability, and migration use cases for Kubernetes workloads leveraging NetApp's industry-leading data management technology for snapshots, backups, replication, and cloning.

StorageGRID achieves Common Criteria certification!

This announcement will be specifically valuable for our public sector customers and government organizations.

StorageGRID has earned the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation certificate!

Common Criteria is a global standard for technology security. To earn a Common Criteria certification, IT products are assessed to ensure that they meet the strict security requirements for government use. StorageGRID was tested against Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 2+ requirements to address a number of security areas, including object access control, data protection, security management, data corruption and many others.

The StorageGRID Common Criteria certification follows two certifications earned in 2021, NF203 Digital Safe and ISO25051, and compliments our earlier compliant retention qualifications satisfying SEC, FINRA, and CFTC regulations.

This will give us a barometer for attendance and enable us to prep and staff appropriately, as well as gauge where the community's interest levels are focused.

To kick off the festivities, we'll have our annual Watch Party of the keynote, featuring a kickoff show hosted by Yours Truly at 7:45AM Pacific, an opening statement from CEO George Kurian, and a review of exciting announcements from our Host and M.C. this year, Jenni Flinders (SVP, WW Channels). Following this, we'll roll right into some feature presentations from our cloud provider partners, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

Afterwards, on top of all the on-demand sessions from our technical staff available from NetAppTV, we have hand-picked a few key presenters and topics that we expect a lot of you will not only want to hear more about, but also have questions for the presenters. They'll be joining us for live presentations, and you'll be able to unmute your mics and ask questions to some of our senior product leadership, just like an in-person breakout session!

In addition, we'll be hosting a series of Panel Q&A Roundtable sessions in a Stage Channel, where you can request to speak and ask the panel a question. We expect these will be really hot-button topics of interest, and expect a lot of interactive conversation and debate! We encourage it!

We're excited to announce that Trident v22.10, the latest release of our popular storage orchestration provider for Kubernetes, is now available!

🚨 IMPORTANT 🚨

- Trident will now strictly enforce the use of multipathing configuration in SAN environments, with a recommended value of find_multipaths: no in multipath.conf file. Use of non-multipathing configuration or use of find_multipaths: yes or find_multipaths: smart value in multipath.conf file will result in mount failures. Trident has recommended the use of find_multipaths: no since the 21.07 release.```

🎉 Welcome to v2 of the NetApp Discord community! 🎉

You're probably noticing some things have shifted around quite a bit. It's the culmination of 3-6 months of planning that started last summer with the integration of The Pub, and now that we have Forum Channels enabled in our community (thanks, Discord!) we can offer a proper help section in a more threaded Q&A style that is searchable.

First, in an effort to breed more discussion around code, open-source, and development, we wanted to add a place for developers and practitioners to discuss their approaches to tooling, frameworks, and integrations with our tools. Get some code review from your peers, or find out how you can contribute to any of our OSS projects.

Next, we don't want this to just be a place where you come ask questions, but more of a living/breathing COMMUNITY! So we wanted to dedicate a space where you can talk about all kinds of activities! What meals you love cooking in #┊・food , #┊・hobbies you might have, or your thoughts on the latest tv show or movie in #┊・tv-and-movies!

To usher in this new overhaul of the community, we're kicking off a new weekly series format called NetApp ONAIR! These will be live-streamed to the NetApp YouTube channel (and maybe Twitch, TBD) with an accompanying YouTube Activity right here in Discord where you can watch along. Just like we did at INSIGHT 2022, the presenters will be members of NetApp Engineering and Product Mgmt, as well as some of our channel and technology partners in the future! Our very first episode will be this Thursday with Drew Claybrook and myself going over all the changes here in Discord in more detail! We'll walk you through all our intentions and guidance for the new sections and channels, and field your questions live! 📢 OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON DISCORD.IO BREACH 📢

@everyone Earlier this week, news broke of a data breach at a 3rd-party site, discord.io. You may have seen some very clickbaity headlines about 760,000 users info being affected such as DiscordID's, email addresses, etc. It's important to understand that this is NOT Discord. I know a lot of you are aware of this already, so apologies for the spam. But we wanted to get in front of this before the rumor mill takes off questioning Discord's viability as a safe community tool. (Spoiler: It's already happening)

Discord.io was a site in the same vein as bit.ly. A 3rd party tool used to create vanity invite links and to track metrics for a paid premium. It requires opting-in, and I assure you that @stiff aspen and myself are the only two people that could have done that. We didn't. In fact, we had never heard of the site prior to the breach happening.

❌ Misinformation

There is a lot of bad info getting passed around that this is a breach of Discord. It is not. This is simply what happens when a company doesn't trademark their name or logo, or allows 3rd parties to use them without contesting it. Should have been forced to change a long time ago.

Data Migration

• SVM Migrate enhancements

The SVM Migrate tool includes a number of enhancements with the ONTAP 9.14.1 release, including NFSv4.1 with pNFS support, a scalability increase to 400 volumes, support for up to a 12-node cluster size, and tamperproof Snapshot support

💿 Support for new AFF A-series systems, built for AI

ONTAP 9.15.1 supports the new high-performance AFF A1K, AFF A90, and AFF A70 systems, designed for the next generation of business workloads such as AI/ML training and inference. This new class of systems provides up to twice the performance of existing AFF A-series offerings and delivers “always on” improved storage efficiency without performance trade-offs.

Windows backup applications & Unix-style symlinks

Beginning with ONTAP 9.15.1, you also have the option of backing up the symlink itself instead of the data it points to. This can provide several benefits, including improved performance of your backup applications. You can enable the feature using the ONTAP CLI or REST API.

🔒 Dynamic Authorization

ONTAP 9.15.1 introduces an initial framework for dynamic authorization, a security feature that can determine whether a command issued by an administrator account should be denied, prompted for additional authentication, or allowed to proceed. Determinations are based on the user account's trust score, taking into account factors such as time of day, location, IP address, trusted device usage, and the user's authentication and authorization history.

🦹 MORE Multi-Admin Verification

ONTAP 9.15.1 RC1 adds over a hundred new commands to the MAV framework for additional protection from malicious insiders.

🔌 NFS over TLS

Protect data “over the wire” at the protocol layer with simplified configuration compared to other technologies such as IPSec and NFS Kerberos. Today, we're excited to share with @everyone that NetApp and Nutanix announced a new strategic partnership focused on helping organizations modernize virtualization and cloud infrastructure with less risk and complexity. The new integration will combine NetApp Intelligent Data Infrastructure with the Nutanix Cloud Platform, giving customers more flexibility across on-prem, cloud, and containerized environments.

🔄 Easier modernization

Customers will have a new path to modernize their virtualization stack, storage, and cloud platform without needing to overhaul everything at once. The goal is to make modernization more flexible and less disruptive.

⚡ Faster VM migration

The integration is designed to make moving VMs into Nutanix much faster and simpler using NetApp Shift Toolkit and Nutanix Move, with data-in-place conversions expected to happen in minutes.

🛠️ Simpler operations

NetApp ONTAP and Nutanix Cloud Platform are expected to work together to reduce admin overhead, simplify troubleshooting, and allow independent scaling of compute and storage.

🎯 VM-level control

Customers will be able to manage environments with more VM-granular visibility and control, including performance, storage capacity, and recovery methods from a unified view.

🔐 Built-in cyber resilience

The joint solution is also expected to include access to NetApp ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with AI and NetApp ransomware resilience services to help detect threats and exfiltration attempts in real time.

📅 Availability

Support for Nutanix Cloud Platform with NetApp AFF A-Series all-flash systems and select FAS hybrid-flash systems is planned for later this year. Cisco support through FlexPod with Nutanix is also planned.
