Epic Games Store is a way to easily download a game and have it updated. Comparing it to Steam might not make sense (as a non-gamer), but suffice it to say that it's a massive QoL improvement as compared to downloading a one-off title, in terms of visibility and effort to play.

To upgrade your visor and other elements of your gear/drone you will travel to T1 and T2,.

I don't think there is yet.
When you start you will have 2 illuvials and some shards.
Within the overworld you will see floating orbs. You shoot those. Then you can enter an encounter and battle for the illuvials. If you win you use a shard to capture them. T0 shards for T0 illuvials.
On the website under the overworld section. Andrew Wall has a good walk through showing the basics.
