that's the point though: if we're all moving around with 9+ flaps when new content's being released, we won't have anyone testing if the new content is accessible for players who haven't reached that level of flight strength or choose not to collect their winged lights before eden runs

the winged light on top of the tower in the dreams village is a good example, that one's really hard to brute force your way up towards if you only have 6-7 wedges (can still be reached with those level of flaps, but you need to take a more specific approach)

Remember the seasonal candles might not even reset this beta season or might be capped down to a low number too. Some testers have over 1000 candles from running all the realms each day. Really impressive but might be capped to not break the candle economy.

I’m not sure we’ll be seeing the face palm spirit come back any time soon. It was probably removed for a reason. Not saying we will never see it again, but that’s my take.
Personally I don’t like that emote much for sky, I would worry if I used it people would take it I was face palming at them rather than myself (the only situation I’d ever think to use it). There would probably also be people who would use it to face palm at others which I feel does not fit in with the friendship and support nature of Sky.

back on the conversation a bit ago about low WL levels: I've been on beta for about 11 months now and still have a max of 8 wedges because I don't really buy wing buffs too much. I will often go weeks without collecting my WL after eden too just to see if I can do things. Like for sanctuary I went in there with 3 flaps to see how moth friendly it was. gotta say it was funny that one time I went down to 1 wedge and people lit me up to see enchantment ult on during prophecy I could not get into the prophecy cave with one wedge

the matchmaking in sky is completely random. you won't meet different people by changing your location. You may just be meeting people who speak other languages from you because of the times you play sky lines up better with their time zones. I notice if I"m on at midnight on the weekends I'll often meet players from Asian countries because it's around noon there

Forest's elder is only. hide and seek pioneer is still a spirit, the model is just smaller to match with the chibi mask and I think it's kinda cute having a kid playing hide and seek. Thought it was random the first time but when we went back and tried to recreate what we did first time it happened again.
We went with a group, you need someone to be in pity and someone who gets deathlooped until there are living players on the server. For some reason if the deathloop player restarts the game they might be able to warp into eden pity room (this wasn’t possible in previous builds as far as i remember) and when that happened all of us who was still alive, exploded wings and/or crashed.

Beta contents on YouTube released prior to Dreams on Live look like the 4 pillars are supposed to light up as you approach, the drawbridge lowered, and a stone autodoor just ahead opens.
All of these "animations" seem to be currently missing in Live
(I tried multiple times with both the quest activated and not)

I was browsing YouTube looking for cool sky videos to watch and I saw a video with a beta spoiler thumbnail! I don't mind because I'm in beta, but for other players that can be really annoying. There was no blurred image or anything, just the straight up picture.

I was one of the players who crashed from that eden trip, but my game (both live and beta) tends to crash fairly easily whenever a lot of sounds get played after one another (e.g. being tossed around violently between two wind walls)

We made a change to help with the death loop in eden. once you've been there too long, you basically hit a kill switch (thus the wing fiesta) but apparently it also caused a crash, the crash should be fixed in the next build though.

basically what's happening is if not everyone in the instance dies, it puts people who have lost all their wings in a deathloop. we've tried a ton of ways to fix this to no avail, so this is kind of a last ditch effort to get folks out of the loop sequence. it also prevents griefers from squatting in storm preventing others from moving on.

I am always slow getting statues. I back track like crazy trying to get all 63, I hope the timer isn't too short. (Slow being 15mins from first to last statue) edit: looks at footage from last eden run okay, last run that was today was 9:30 from start to final statue... I guess I got quicker during my break somehow.

This is also speculation on my part, but the death loop feels very similar to a dead player being thrown into a reset wall while they’re being pulled into the dark room — the white screen fade out and soundtrack restarting have the same behaviour as a reset wall

it's a fairly long timer still, based on the average player's time spent in the area, so it shouldn't be common for the average player to hit the trigger event.

It’s when you click to collect a WL, it appears to collect, but it’s not added to your total count of winged lights. And when you re-enter the area the WL shows up again as if you never collected them 😭

death looping itself can still happen for a period of time, but they implemented something new which will cause all players still in the room to get killed if a certain amount of time passes after the first person in the room dies -- this is to put an eventual stop to the death loop, because it's believed that the looping happens when there're still other players alive in the room

the fix mentioned in the patch notes is to prevent a crash from happening when that kill switch kicks in -- people were reporting on the previous build that when everyone started to lose winged lights from the kill switch kicking in, a lot of players would crash

you can and will still die if you take too long to do the statues, but that will only happen if someone in the room has died before you -- there's also a pretty long timer for the kill switch to kick in, so you usually shouldn't see it happening unless you're deliberately loitering around or being slow (someone tried testing it earlier and is estimating the timer to be at least 10 minutes long)

from what i can tell, server merges don't behave the same way in later parts of eden, including the point of no return: i've never been merged with a random player who i didn't already see in the second part of eden while i was climbing up there in the same session

did you give any winged lights to statues while you were in the point of no return? if not, you might be able to break yourself out of stormlock by chibi falling into the eden gate at home (or just having a friend drag you into the first part of eden through the gate, and then going home)

I think I’ve only seen it happen once. I was doing eden with a group of friends and we met a few strangers along the way, enough so the server was full. When we reached the end though a few of the strangers left and 1 went in with us. We found eden already mostly lit and a shade that was already dying to an orb in there. Not sure if it bugged or what happened.

i think if the candles get wiped he reason will be "not wrecking the sky economy" because we arent exploiting a bug. these are intionally placed candles and we earned them like any other but they do want us to keep going on and testing normal gam mechanics too so if they think people would stop candle running over this then they might decide to wipe them. basically like voi said, treat it like a fun thing to do and be pleasantly surprised if you get to keep them

You don't have to candle run regularly in beta, unless you want to do constellations, travelling spirits etc. Every progress we make here can be wiped anytime when the dev team needs a clear page. I did that too mostly rub parallel both at the same time, and even that requires a lot of energy. But again, it's a personal choice how much time and effort you put into beta.

what pakka said, in any given moment progress can be completely wiped. beta isn’t like another live where you have to put all of your time in. beta is available for the reason to test out patches and give feedback. some people prefer to put in a lot of work knowing this, but others put in work and expect a reward out of it, which won’t come anytime soon.

You were still alive and couldn’t see all those wings? when we went everyone could see the fountain dead or alive the only difference were the sound and the wings lacking those halos. Dead didn’t see the shiny halo just the wing itself and had a quite pleasant wing loss sound, living had a very loud sound and halos around wings.

No, I was just standing by one of the shrines next to a statue, together with some of the others. Uzephi kept coming and going as a statue/dead Sky kid for a while. Kanpai went ahead and died first, btw. Then one by one the others died until I was alone. At first the red rain didn't seem to affect me at all, then it was just like normal and I gifted a few statues before dying.

If I understand it correctly, it's this thing that supposed to end the infinte death loop bug. With this fix, if a player has been in the last are of Eden for an XX amount of time, they will start losing WL even if they are in a safe place, effectively killing them off, and saving everyone from the death loop

The only thing that stops the death loop is when everyone dies in the server. I usually fall to pity room after last person loses all wings if I manage to get out of loop so I think they couldn’t fix the loop but this change makes sure that everyone in the server loses all wings eventually so looping players will eventually get out of it when everyone dies 😅

probably best to report it as a bug, yeah, because if you weren't dying at the same time as everyone else, then their kill switch wasn't functioning as they intended it to (i.e. you surviving may have kept someone in the death loop cycle, according to their current understanding)

Ktjn said they made the timer before the instant death long enough to account for the average amount of time players spend in Eden. It's mainly to prevent some people from purposefully camping out in pnr so others can't advance and get stuck in the loop. Moths shouldn't really be affected that much unless they just stand around doing nothing

We're not doing anything to make the valley oob a feature. it's likely a resurfaced relic of an old, abandoned system. As we clean up old code to make the game run smoother and better, this stuff crops up from time to time (think the old world quests that were accidentally enabled recently).

I know this wasn’t you all intention but I think it adds another layer of depth to the game to have off map locations marked, is there a chance this may be expanded on in the future, or at least leaving the valley oob label in tact ?

That's not really something we'd consider, because it's not particularly fair to the average player who doesn't know anything about, and often has no interest in, going out of bounds. There is no map in Sky, so all gameplay is already heavily reliant on having a desire to explore. We absolutely love hiding things in nooks and crannies, but those hidden gems should still be accessible through normal gameplay, and not rely on manipulating game mechanics in unintended ways. At the end of the day, going out of bounds is a type of bug, requiring glitching in specific ways to achieve the desired results. We know certain corners of the community hold these out-of-bounds places very dear to them, which is why we try to preserve them so long as it doesn't cause harm to the game overall, but it's a very small subset of the broader community.

A long time ago we had labels for the various areas in the game, but we eventually removed them (though newer areas have names so we can direct players there to reveal that new content)

I think it has to do with how less valuable hearts would become more seasons down the line. Just doing the current seasonal quests available give a substantial amount of hearts. Imagine 3 to 4 seasons in the future how easily it would be for a new player to get the black or white cape or the ascended capes.

When a current season is active, it's an incentive to complete those quests while it's current content. As the game ages, the amount of free hearts one can obtain starts to pile up and creates a negative impact on the heart economy for a newer player, it's an economy balancing decision. The primary source for hearts should come from acts of kindness from friends.

You might end up saying that it negatively impacts the heart economy... but to offset it, items have been included in the game now that cost well beyond 100 hearts
The free hearts from the seasonal spirits were more or less increasing friendship wit the seasonal spirits.. but they go a long way to helping people unlocking some items... in all honestly the game doesn’t inherently encourage heart gifting, because candles are such a prized commodity and not one that players would easily gift... I’ve had cases where I’ve helped new players a lot.. leading them through start to finish (of course I wasn’t doing it for any reward.. but even that time spent didn’t make the player gift me a heart either) which goes to show you that on average, players may be “ gifted” a heart legitimately maybe once every 2 weeks...
the biggest way to receive hearts in this game will be through ‘illegitimate’ ways which I honestly just consider fair trading since it benefits both parties..

That’s just my personal take on things.. candles are tedious to get in this game and they are the primary means of unlocking anything.. so it makes sense to me why fair trading happens more often than donations

On a related note, in my 1.5 years of gameplay I’ve only received 5 hearts from players with no strings attached... I.e these hearts were completely free for me..and now, it feels weird to not gift a heart back for every heart I do receive... it’s almost like there’s an implicit note attached to the hearts..

Might not have been the intended effect, but it certainly is how it all turned out.. :(

I can see both sides of the token, but personally I think making them cost candles was a good call. Having too many hearts available 'relatively' easily (depending on the quest) makes them more common than candles in the early game. They're a different type of currency and can't directly be compared, but in a way they're a more elusive and expensive currency, costing 3 candles for 1 time purchase from spirits, collecting light daily or the occasional but much appreciated gift from a friend.

Items costing hearts are often cheaper and rarer than candle prices at the base of the tree where newer players will be purchasing and higher tier items that cost more hearts are meant to serve as goals I believe less than a few hours work of speed running all the quests. The new capes that may or may not be coming soon are an extreme example of this, so much so they aren't even included in the constellation completion count due to their long term nature.

Heart gifting and the nature of it is a separate topic in my mind, possibly for another discussion. For the past quest giver hearts though I feel its fair to have them cost candles to prevent early game heart influx and keep the value of hearts feel special and prized. Just my opinion though, I can see both sides of the discussion.

but I do feel for newer players..
they don’t have the luxury of having gone through the seasons when they came just because of how late they joined and there’s a lot more items being added that require hearts I.e the 15 hearts for the bow for Christmas or like the 15 hearts now for the rose mask... and these one off items take a while to come back :|

It’s there to gift it’s memories... and somehow purchasing a heart from a regular spirit makes sense, but buying a heart from a seasonal spirit that took my help to relive its memories? That doesn’t make sense to me... :( the regular spirits give you the first expression for free.. imagine having to pay candles for that expression :(

but I respect the devs... though I feel I’d be happier if they removed the hearts altogether after the end of the season :( if they’re gonna sell them now..

originally, the trials had very little wax because the devs wanted to discourage full candle runners from spending even longer than they currently were by running the trials every day. a full candle run already takes up to 2 hours, even longer sometimes. but with the mindset of a complete revamp of the candle system, it's now ok for the trials to have more candles. once the devs are finished with the new system, there will be more wax than you can collect for candles, due to hitting the hard cap. so you get to choose where you run for the day.

Days of Love ended in beta a while ago. The swing and seesaw was available for ~2 days i think, so it’s not possible to get them anymore

If I remember correctly all we know is in beta they're getting tested and developed still for some of them (pink, black and white) while the others will be rolled out in live at times we don't know.

Just keep in mind, this was a poll that only a few thousand of a discord server with (at the time) 50k users on an app with almost 20mil downloads when that poll happened. It isn't a true testament to the "most popular destination" due to the relatively small sample size compared to how many players there are. (Only 1/10000 of the then playerbase voted) edit: sorry for ping, ticked "off." Mobile discord being dumb.

Yeah, that’s just a poll, like all polls that get a sampling of a larger population to measure views. Point taken though, that the people who participate in the TGC polls may be a more serious crowd that are interested enough in sky to visit TGC’s discord server and participate in polls. One might speculate that it’s probably a larger percentage that is interested enough to make IAP too, which is something closer to the bottom line. Surprising that it was the number one interest in that group poll. OOB seems like a free thing.... I.e. rather than dev’s and artist having to create the complete content, they get this whole expanded world free that continues to entertain the more serious players looking for additional content.

It's normal that this happens in beta. Many people join just to get "early access" to the next season, and once the season starts in Live they don't play beta as often. It takes a lot of work to keep both active.

I only just remembered now, but it actually makes complete sense that the season was extended in beta: we got some kind of special thing at the end of the last three seasons that introduced new areas (Ark spell shop, Sanctuary bells, the full Prophecy murals), and I don’t think we’ve seen anything like that for Dreams yet

well in game the shepherd system is a mysterious friendliness ranking. our best guess as players is it denotes people more likely to help other players out. it used to show everyone else who the shepherds were but that got taken away and now it;s just that shepherds see who new players are
