The only free TGC game would be Cloud which you can download from archive.org. fl0w is available on PS34/Portable/Vita. Journey is available on PS3/4, iOS and PC (Steam and EG, but EG has broken multiple player and cloud saving).

Their multiplayer is somewhat limited compare to sky because you only can matchmake with one player during a session. Afaik a lot of people recommend to matchmake on the Playstation platform

I wish Journey would get an updated PS5 version with ray-tracing and all that goodness. I heard the light and sand effects are still superior only on PS3. The PC-version and PS4-version has other kind of effects according to Digital Foundry.

Just my 2 cents about an incredible game.

but funnily enough, the original journey had all the shadow maps drawn by hand, so they could be as sharp and deliberate as the devs want

it doesn't always need ray tracing to look great, great art design goes a long way

that said, I wouldn't count on it
if there was a time to give journey a remaster rerelease, it would have been it's 10th anniversary this year

and considering that they gave up support in the mobile versions, it doesn't seem like anyone wants to put any money into it right now

I played Journey originally on PS3, now on PS5. It's fine. it doesn't need ray tracing or any other kind of graphics improvement. The stylised looks of sand and cloth are part of the atmosphere of the game. Leave it alone.

Journey is much more straight forward than sky, it's also much harder to meet people there.
Journey is like a complete experience in one full run but sky isn't linear.

The similarities are there because sky is more like a spiritual successor to journey.

Journey is an exercise in how minimalistic interaction and communication can be, while still allowing for some genuine human connection and emotions.
In a time - PS3 era - where many games strived to have more and more realistic graphics, Journey took a step back to prove it doesnt need to do that to be a great game. Great style and art design can stand on its own, and for years. Where many games of this time look dated now, because realistic graphics have improved a lot, Journey holds up even now.
It has kicked off an era of indie games with more of a focus on unique art style and creativity. Showed that short, beautiful games are worthwhile, and it doesn't all need to be realistic, action-y, hour-long 60 buck expensive products, and that indie games like this have a place on consoles too.

Journey made big waves when it came out. Without Journey, there may not have been a Monument Valley, no Abzu, no Tunic, no Dear Esther, no What Happaned to Edith Finch, no Gris, no The Witness, no Paper Trail, no Sable.
And there definitely would not have been a Sky.

Sky hits many of the same themes as Journey - stages modeled on the periods of a life, a theme of pilgrimage and rebirth, a peaceful coop game, etc. Sky doesn't care about being all that minimalistic tho. It has you add friends, type in chat with them, have seasonal events, sells you cosmetics. Sky is fun to play for a long time, but Journey is a unique, emotional experience.

I started a diamond painting of my favorite moment in the game, it's the scene where you slide through the sunken City, and then the view switches and you see the sunset and the mountain and everything is golden and beautiful and the muuuuusic... Journey is amazing

Journey was my first game when I bought PS4 a long time ago (and it was also my first videogame), so it's a very special game for me and for years I wanted to have an easier way to talk or connect with my friends around there (even though I knew this could be bad for the proposal of the game), and when I met Sky it was a shock for me and I, since I joined the community, always have much fun there and I was able to meet really important people to me. But sometimes I come back here again to remember where it started and feel really nostalgic. It's always comforting being able to wear my red or white cloak and fly around these beautiful landscapes that I never get tired of.

This was a beta-test version of Sky. It finished in 2019 and othing remains of it. If you get to see any video of gameplay you may see some of the ideas that developed into the Sky we're playing now.

The most interesting thing to this channel is that some of the clothes look significantly more like the Journey cloak than the capes we see now.

It does not exist at all now. You cannot play it. It was a version of Sky back before they had settled on what Sky would be, what it would look like, and how the controls for flying would work, etc.. It had different names for the realms, the skykids and their clothes looked different, etc.. But if you saw someone playing it you would definitely think they were playing a very Sky-like game.

I think of it as a prototype for Sky which they had to make public because they needed to test it with hundreds of online players. Normally, any big computer program in development would be kept secret, with only a few trusted people being allowed to play it. But you cannot test a MMORPG that way, you need lots of players all trying to do things at once.

The word 'Rythulian' was mentioned, apparently once only, in a promotional 'developer plays the game' session with Austin Wintory and Jenova Chen. It refers to the race that all the characters are, not to the planet (it's possible that they came to that planet from elsewhere). It does not seem to appear anywhere else and has never been officially acknowledged by Chen. However, in the absence of any other word, some people use it.

Because of the nature of these questions, I'm adding this. Chen did not carefully sketch out any backstory to Journey. In fact the game violates its own laws of physics in a few places, just to let you make a particular jump or have a particular fun experience. Also, Chen has casually said things like the PC was made of cloth, like all the beings in Journey. So don't expect a rigorous and consistent mythos surrounding the game. Believe whatever makes you happy, as long as it's consistent with what you see in-game.

Yes I've always seen that term used in the fandom as their "species" and I loved using it as well to describe my Journey OC.

Yeah I think they didn't want that term to be an official name for the funky caped creatures in Journey, but I still love it and many others do, and use it as it's official fanon species name.

It's a shame that they want to make everything vague, including the "name" of the characters. But I guess tgc was being considerate because they want to let people be open and free with whatever they want to view or see their creations with. So they don't provide official names or terms with anything.

If you go back to the level hub (the place you got to early on which has stairs that let you get straight to each level) you will see a set of stairs with the glypns you've collected on. If you complete the collection you'll also see a white robe there. Two or three of the glyphs are either well hidden or difficult to get to because they require a timed jump, so don't be ashamed if you need to consult a walkthrough.

Six maps in each game, sketching out the progression from a baby with an easy but mysterious life, an exciting dramatic middle, an old person with mostly memories, ending in a difficult journey it's impossible to complete, then rebirth.

I played Journey a week ago on a whim, and while the gameplay is definitely rougher than sky (no jump or open wing mode), it felt like a more complete experience overall. My only complaint was how my computer can barely run it with minimum detail, even though it can run games like Sky perfectly fine. I enjoyed my time with Journey despite that and I'm planning on 100% it!

I would need to know your setup and graphics card and drivers. I suspect that the game is not using your graphics system to the best of its abilities. Both games hit similar story beats in the journey you're sent on, but both games have very distinct playstyles and vibes.

Journey is a much more intense, minimalistic and immersive experience. I'm not the only one that said they cried at the end of the game. It is an exercise of how minimalistic a game can be and still allow for genuine human connections and feelings and the team excelled at that.

Sky is fun! It is beautiful, it is also very immersive. But where Journey is all about the intensity and beauty of feelings and a hard journey, Sky is about freedom and friendships and discovery. In Sky, you can meet hundreds of different people and befriend them, be silly with them, chat with them. You have a large world with many branching little areas that you can explore. It has daily quests and regularly seasonal updates that encourage you to come back daily. It has a grind for cosmetics which can be a little much sometimes, but playing dressup is just too fun to stop. Sky is not as intense as Journey in what it does. Sky is much more of a fun playground.

I definitely recommend it! It's a beautiful game, and an important milestone in the history of indie games and games as art.

They're different games. They do not interact, and do not know about one-another. Ideally you would play Journey first. You won't get as fresh and naive an experience because you've played Sky first. But Journey is still a unique game which has many things in it that aren't in Sky. It offers things I've never seen in any other game and I'd recommend it, even though you've played Chen's Sky.

You won't find much that is like Sky, and yet less scary than Sky. Sky is already among the most peaceful, wholesome games out there, especially on the free-to-play market.

In terms of free-to-play games, your options are usually mediocre idle mobile games or MOBAs and battle royales.

That said, this channel is for discussing the other games released by the company that made Sky, and none of these are free to play (but worth the investment). I would recommend to also look into the games developed by Giant Squid - the studio created by Journey's art lead - but again, these are not free to play.

I think you misunderstand. Sony owns the rights to Journey, because they paid ThatGameCompany to make the game for PS3. Everytime Journey is sold, Sony earns some money.
Journey has no ingame purchases. No cosmetics you can buy. The purchase of the game is the only money the game makes. And making a game costs money, as the developers have to pay rent, bills and food.

Sky is built on a free-to-play model. Sky earns its money through Season Passes and cosmetics people can buy ingame, thus financing the game for all players. Journey is a more traditional game where you buy the game so you can experience it.

No, those two games are made by TGC, just like Journey, Sky and Flower. Though to be real accurate Cloud was made by a team of students Jenova was a part of, before TGC was founded. fl0w was created by Jenova and Nicholas Clark as a flash game first and later on remade for PlayStation after TGC was founded (this is all taken from the wiki articles lmao).
Annapurna Interactive was merely the publisher for Journey and Flower.

It is a tribute to another TGC game. Same model: flower looks exactly the same as one of them in that other game. What you actually did is figure out where one of the meteors you just saw landed. Well done.

Played journey for the first time today and after viewing the cutscene, i saw a companion standing on that scarf thing in the pic(not moving and just staring at me) so i tried to do the same.
I honked and got kidnapped by a bunch of them to the next area ;-; I thought only the mantas in sky would kidnap you

i stopped at the area underground after the sliding part (cuz i had to go-) but journey was sooo good so far i love it :)))

Really difficult to answer. It's a weird game. You are a flower petal blown on the wind. You collect other petals and use the mass of your metal cloud to make things happen. It's recognisably a TGC game because you're flying all the time, but it's not very like Journey or Sky.

Journey is a more standard kind of game. It's something like a single-player version of Sky. It's unbelievably beautiful and one of the best games of all time.
