Yea why wouldnt i
You said your new right?
Yea

my bad
Not new to the game, but new to the server. Engineer in life, artificer in game, glad to be here.
G'day! Do check out the #channel-guide when you get a moment to see all the various spots to chat about things.
Im Pretty excited to host my first campaign
What's the pitch?
It's with my friends who are new to dnd aswell...
It's a pre- steampunk setting and starts as a quest about finding his lost items...
I’m a bit confused about how to post a game advertisement.
Interesting. Good luck with it!
Then unknown to them, ends with fighting them an immortality seeker who is brother to that orginal quest giver and they are both from a different dimension 😁
Type
/looking
In this channel, pick the option for Players, hit Send and you should get a form to fill in the details.

quick strange question: what is the best and cleanest snack to have at the physical table during a session?
Popcorn is always my go to, but not anything with crazy flavours since they usually have a lot of dust on them
and it’s easy to share!
It keeps glitching out
Is death a trigger word?
My chaplain is going to be brutal and I was trying to add that I expect each player to have 5 characters ready to go because they can die multiple times in a game
you mean campaign
Are you trying to use the looking for bot? Did you type the command in a text channels here (like this one) and not in a dm?
when you say 5 times in a game, do you mean over the course of a year or two, or do you mean per session?
I mean in a session it is possible to die multiple times
I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to happen but there are a few plot points that are no win senarios
you might want to look into Faster, Purple Worm! since that's regarded as fairly brutal and a session goes on until there's a TPK. like, each and every session ends in a TPK. that's the niche of Faster, Purple Worm!
No-win scenarios are generally bad form. It's one thing if the enemy is so high level they stand no chance. It's another if the party canNOT actually win under any circumstances.
I’m not exactly expecting every season to end in a tpk but there are some things that will if people don’t run
make sure to describe your campaign as a "meat grinder", to prepare players. like Tomb of Annihilation is a meat grinder campaign.
Okay fair
so its a thing that exists and people do play that. going in expecting a meat grinder and cranking out characters is something players occasionally look forward to. it allows them to try out a huge variety of classes and combinations.
like, calling it that will attract players actively looking forward to it.
I appreciate the advice
I created my character what do I do now
If you know the rules, try to find folks to game with. Read #find-a-game for all the info on using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels!
I wanna start playing dnd cuz it looks hard ash but idk where or how to start. Any advice?

Check out the free rules above. Video guides are also available. Glance over the first couple of sections, then have a go at putting together a practice character. You'll need to pick a class, background and species. Feel free to ask questions!
Theres nobody free i suppose?
Folk are always about. Ask a question, that usually stirs them up. Me, I'm off to bed.
Damn so it's really like sum lord of the rings shi. That goes hard, thx imma check it all out
I'd be willing to help you learn since i'm starting a new campaign rn, just player hunting realistically
what do you need help with
Careful yall. Soliciting games outside of #find-a-game might get ya bonked by mods. I ain't gonna tell you how to live just a friendly FYI is all. Hope your games are good regardless fr
Taz is correct - it's off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of our Looking for Game channels. Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels to find a group/game.
Not so much a newcomer, but I finally found my first DM after a dang long time. I did my research, but my party members are completely new. PHB classes and subclasses only, we'll most likely be all variant humans but we might convince the DM to let us play any PHB race. We're playing by 2014. Any advice?
Starting with not advice, why PHB only?
Warlock of the fiend, berserker barb, draconic sorc, and champion fighter are probably the most straightforward options for complete newbies and have the least complicated mechanics.
DM said so. Idk. It's our first time playin
Champion fighter? In this economy?
Sometimes all we can afford is increased crit range and action surge
Battlemaster:
Advice for what specifically? There are a bunch of aspects to the game!
Teaching the new players
Maybe grab several different cheat sheets online; if you're playing 2014, you should have a slew of options. I'd tell people at the beginning that you're happy to help answer questions, but don't offer advice/info unless asked for. Those would be my guideposts, personally.
welcome!
I've been playing with my friends for a while, but I decided to join a discord server to meet new people and to learn from them
Im still quite inexperienced tho
as am i. still some awesome peeps in here that even i am learning from. feel free to talk to anyone in any channel.
well any channel meant for public talking of course lol
Okay 👍
I wasn't sure where to put this but I need some help! I've had my dnd character for 4 years and just now got into a one shot campaign to see how I do, it's tomorrow, and I got attached to the placeholder names I had since the character shares the appearance that's slightly modified of Venti, but he's not really like Venti at all, so I used placeholder names for the environment and now I'm attached to it.
I've tried using generators, it's all just gibberish, I don't know what to do. I need to rename The Abyss, and Mondstadt, and Sumeru, and the Knights of Favonius, and some of the flowers in both, and a couple geographical areas. I tried looking at wind in german and it's literally just wind. I've tried looking at root words and nothing is right, I feel so stupid and like....hopeless for changing this, and what if I'm not attached to it so I can't even remember it? A person I'm playing with suggested I change it because it was too focused on canon stuff.
I've had the same thing for 4 years, I don't know what to do 😭
It would depend on what kind of info you want, I think. General info you might be better off with a cursory google search and then refine what you want to ask, maybe? The game is pretty complicated, it seems like.
yeah
i was just looking through some stuff for the last few days
I know the basics but never played

If you want to purchase everything it certainly can be. Thankfully a good amount of content is in the free Basic Rules
If you wanted more ways to access content if you can't afford it / don't want to purchase it, you have a few options as well
- Your local game store or library may have 5e books available to check out or peruse
- If your DM uses D&DBeyond and at least one other person has a Master Tier subscription in the campaign, your DM can share their owned content with you
ok ty :3
Hi! I am new to dnd and don't really know where to begin i guess. Don't know anyone irl that also likes it so joined here to meet new people and to learn more about the game
Played baldurs gate 3 at least and listened to a dnd podcast but more that that I'm lost. Hope everyone has a good day! 🙂
Hello!
Hi, how long have you been into dnd?
Me?
I've always wanted to play it but never actually did and I know that elephants can jump higher then cats as they're stronger and in dnd the stronger you are the higher you can jump
Welcome
If you've got any particular questions, feel free to drop them here. The Pinned comments and the info bos from Dyno above also have a lot of useful links to get started.
Ok!
Hey guys
Hi!
Huh, didn't know that. Learn something new all the time, have a feeling it will be hard to keep up in the beginning 😅
It's a Swedish letter, like hjonk but with an ö instead. My own little twist i guess
Ahhh, that i did not know
Your name would sound like but the e is not that sounded and just makes you say the o in a deeper tone
Genau
german has less special characters that would be suitable for D&D though, like the o with a / in it
is flurry of blows stacked with bonus unarme strike?
Dnd this sure
- This letter is used in an confusing language named german
Hahaha, Swedish is aslo a confusing even though it's my birth language
Wenn wir sprechen von deutsch lass von mein Muttersprache reden ein bisschen
Speaking of German—let's talk a little bit about my native language.
- Can you tell the difference?:
Cc//Čč//Ćć
I see a difference but unsure what the difference is
Common C, Dwarvish C, Elvish C
Aha that might be correct to you but not to me
So
- Cc is said the same as English
2.Čč is said like "ch" but a lil slower and deeper but only a lil
3.Ćć I said like "ch" but a lil lighter and faster then č
Now know?
Like French, the accent on the letter implies an emphasis on the pronunciation.
Now Mr.Smith you've got it correct but not the right language!
so flurry is only 1 extra unarmed strike
Yup! And sometimes more depending on subclass and which rules version you play
The language was Bosnian btw
The principle appears the same.
Yeah kinda there's more letters like that like Šš that's a sh sound and Žž like the s measure
Hi! Is there anything we can help you with?
hello, I have a vague idea of how dnd works. I want to learn further, and ofcource play some games of dnd
Let’s see if I can remember how the bot works
;-;

i kinda know how it works
you choose a class, species... build ur character basically.. each one has different traits. bonuses etc
can i use a reaction spell after have used a bonus action spell?
and the dungeon masters walks u thorugh the story where u make decisions
that is pretty much all i know
Reactions occur when it’s not your turn
and yeha.... dice rolls decide how good u do
ah i forgot, thanks
You’ve got a good start, look over what Dyno sent
aight
told me about server rules, channel guide and moderator support
alright... maybe i should start by making a character in #character-discussion ???
#dnd-newcomers message has links to the basic rules, video guides and more information.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
That works too.
alright thanks... i'll go there.
Well, while technically true, it's not a hard limit. You can take a Reaction on your own turn. The scenarios in which it occurs are limited, but possible.
Yeah you right my bad
Hello, I’ve got a question
I want to start making a character and I’m unsure of where to start, I know that I might need to roll for stats here and I believe that you guys have a bot for that?
#learn-to-play includes free rules, which also include ones for character creation
D&D Beyond also has a very useful character creator with which you can't really go wrong with
There is a bot Avrae, and you can use commands for it in #ddb-avrae-commands
Though do note that you don't need to roll the stats, you can also use basic array and point buy, and if you roll your character's stats, you generally need to do it with your DM present for that character to be allowed to be used by them to avoid cheating 😛
Roll of initiative to know someone cheating
did i make a mistake choosing a sorc as my first character and being weak at roleplay
or should i try to get out of my comfort zone of only being comfortable in battles
You're making a mistake in trying to correlate class or mechanics with roleplay. Any class can be good at roleplay!
Roleplay is just about how your character responds to things, how they view things, what they want, what are they willing to do for things they want, etc. Whether or not your character wields a sword or shoots fire at someone to fight is not gonna change your roleplay potential
I'm the only one of 4 to invest in Cha
It just means your checks with charisma skills are gonna be higher, you don't actually need to be charismatic or great at roleplay in real life
If you're not feeling confident in roleplaying, or don't know the exact things to say, you could just describe to the DM what your character is saying, rather than saying things in character all the time
hmm,thanks , I'll try that out
Though as a tip, including at least the general idea of what they're saying is a good idea, to give the DM at least something to work off of
For example, instead of
"My character asks for a discount"
"My character attempts to persuade the guard to let us in"
"My character tries to go into a sob story about their poor family to hopefully get a bit of a discount from the merchant"
"My character tries to assure the guard that the party needs to get into the building to catch an assassin they know is hiding inside"
So a DM whose job is to roleplay most NPCs will still have some idea as to what way your character is trying to explain things, and can respond accordingly
Well uh, chat i wanna try dnd but i don’t even know where to start
ohh thanks for the tip

thank you
i made a character
Awesome!!!! Any questions
Excellent start. Wanna pop to #character-discussion to review it?
sure!
I wonder is it difficult to be a GM
Cuz seeing as how difficult it is to find a DnD campaign wouldnt it just be easier to make your own? But come to think of it i dont know anything about DnD
Knowing the rules is a good start. The free rules have a DM section, and there are a range of free adventures to cut your teeth on.
It’s as difficult as you want to make it IMO - it has a bit more complexity then being a player because you need to help run the adventure and play the NPCs and monsters. But it’s also a fun way to play D&D from my experience.
Oh i forgot
Don’t share your age folks! See server rules
I forget sometimes
But my point still stands, why? Is it because younger folks are annoying or less mature?
It has to do a lot with social and legal issues surrounding minors and playing with strangers online
And yes maturity can play into that as well
What like the brits online safety act?
And Australia’s recent legal changes, etc.
But we can’t really dive into that as it gets into politics which is a no go here on our server
Cuz i see myself as mature since i mostly socialize with friends of my father
I dont exactly mingle well with people my age (is this against the rule even if i didnt specify age??)
You’re fine. I’ve run games with my kids who are minors along with adult coworkers and friends - it worked fine but that’s because I knew and trusted everyone and everyone playing knew and followed the expectations and boundaries so that it was safe and fun for everyone.
But yeah being a minor can make it challenging to find an online group to play with as we noted earlier
Cuz it feels like im being handled like im 5, even though im as capable as an adult
Yeah it’s just typical “better safe than in a legal mess” risk avoidance.
Like being sued? Whos going to make a legal case?
man i wa
Oh boy… concerned parents, law enforcement based on actual issues of grooming/predation
Etc
That’s why we have the server rules against sharing personally identifying information on our server - we’ve had creeps specifically target minors
Brother, my parents are not only cops but they trust me online, my dad is the one who got me into online gaming, and not to mention friends, so he is well aware
Cool - doesn’t change how others handle it though
Fair enough
Oh damn
Tbh not the worst ive heard
Anyway we should get back to D&D stuff - do spread your game search wide, be a chill and easy to get along with person in the spaces you’re in, and you might get some interested folks who wouldn’t mind having you in their game
I know some younger folks here have managed to pick up games just by being helpful and chill here on the server.
Fair, its difficult for sure
People noticed, thought they’d be a good fit for their game, and they got an invite
Friendliness always wins
Do be careful of the scammers though - offering a “free” game but later on telling you got to get paid art from their artist (often turns out to be stolen or ai generated art)
And be wary of unsolicited friend requests
I mean i would just leave, i dont see why it is imperative that i pay them
Get to know folks before accepting those friend requests!
Anyhooo back to D&D - best wishes on your game search!
Speaking of i got a random friend req yesterday from this server, since ive never talked to em i just ignored the invite and blocked them
Idk why but it seems like common sense is a rare thing to have these days
Anyways, is paladin a new player friendly class?
It’s what I’d consider a mid-complexity class - but if you’re excited about it that matters more.
I like the class but as usual just like the DnD die i own, never got to use it since im not in a group yet
It’s got some fun features like the protective auras and being able to divine smite for some extra damage
forgiven my intrusion but speaking of paladin, if I'm only planning on playing a 1 to 5 lv campaign, Cha is not needed on the pali Right? especially with a sorc on the team
I was kinda tilting more to a war torn vet turned paladin, that overthinks everything because hes heaviliy cautious, "oh look a inkeeper greets us" better roll a investigation check
Some spells still scale off of Charisma, so it depends on what spells the player chooses. Plus skills and their saving throws, so...
Charisma is the paladin’s spell casting ability … so it’s best not to completely neglect it
Idk if DMs will find this annoying
My suggestion is to generate a handful of character options rather than just one. That way, if the DM does veto one concept, you're not stuck!
I do think any concept can be taken to an extreme. "This character trusts no one, so every random NPC is Insight checked" would get old fast, if I were the DM for such a character.
Some ||(me)|| might even argue that Charisma is a Paladin's most important ability score.
Will a DM find this annoying?
I think some will, some won't.
depends on the DM and the tone of the setting
As long as it's subsumed into mostly passive activity and not an endless stream of whining to roll the dice, it can be fine.
I mean the paladin is overly cautious, so he might roll investigation once for every npc he comes across
The paranoid spy Mr Ghrey always sits with his back to the wall and an eye on the door. No rolls needed. He's wary around new folk, might ask prying questions - that's just roleplaying. As long as it's not disruptive, it's generally cool.
I didnt know that since i havent played a match yet
Kinda hoping to find 1 still but it may take a while
new to the game and i only know about it but have never really played it

how do i use cha from lv 1 to 5 , there's a cleric for guidance and a sorc for Cha (face of the party)
The bot post above has some useful info to read through to get you going!
do i remind a 1st time dm that he should probably roll?
The short version: you don't, very much!
Some of your spells might run off of it, some of your features might run off of it. Otherwise, it's not affecting your combat much.
I get the rules and stuff and i know ive been told ill struggle that way but i learn through actions, so if i were to study for sum, id do an activity and actively see what i need to go through
You roll, they tell you when to roll.
But as for having to remind new DMs, hard to say without knowing them and their playstyle specifically.
reading through it right now!
no like , should i remind him to tell us to roll in suitable situations
As for having to remind new DMs, hard to say without knowing them and their playstyle specifically.
And your familiarity with them, too.
Maybe check out the learning sessions offered through the likes of Altrole (https://discord.com/servers/altrole-833840466629230652) or D&D Newbie Sessions (https://discord.com/servers/dandd-newbie-sessions-605565557189640212) for that hands-on learning!
Do i need to pay for it
Nope.
Ill check it out, but i take its not a full on campaign just a tutorial
Correct. That way, you'll have a bit of direct experience to bring with you into a full game.
Hmm thanks
read through it, hm just have to a find a game perhaps

Wait in the second link i have to introduce myself do i have to use my real name?
I assume not, but you'd have to read their rules and such.
Im not exactly comfortable with sharing my name, its something only people i meet in person know
Just be careful with what you share - typical best practices for online safety etc.
Have you had a go at making a character up for practice? #character-discussion is always open.
i'll just do that rq
talks about dnd rules, what rules are these?
oops found it in the link above
If someone tries to make you, definitely leave
I wanna watch someone play a dnd one shot so thst i understand how it works in practice does anyone reccomend any good play through videos or anything
Never played a Warlock. Are there any patrons that you'd advise as easier for a new player?
I'd advise going for whatever the free rules on dndbeyond lets you, as the typically seems to be the easiest subclass for each class
Bro, Cant believe finding a session is such a hassle, as soon as you think you got one, "the timezone makes it so you gotto wake up at 3 in the morning" or the "need a computer" or its just full
As I said yesterday, it can take some time, as I myself looked for months before I got into one
I know but i was kinda hoping it wouldnt be the case
Scheduling is one of the most difficult parts of the hobby, on top of finding a compatible group. Finding a game/group quickly is the exception, which is a matter of luck more than anything else!
Yea.. and here i was thinking it would be easy
At this point idc if the group is compatible i just wanna be in one
Patience is a virtue!
Which i dont have 🤣
I wanna play DnD but multi week long campaigns are tough for me to accept
Multi week? Meaning more than once a week?
Then you'll probably wanna keep an eye out for one-shots or shorter games.
Keep your search focused on one-shots!
Yep. Might want to check on AL or the other organized play options too.
Like a campaign that focuses across multiple weeks
AL can have longer campaigns but tends towards one-shot adventures
AL?
Are one-shots popular? Like do many people do them?
They're popular enough. I don't know what the exact statistics are, though.
Sure they do.
AL?
Adventurers League, the organized play program for D&D. Rata can describe it in more detail.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

What is VTT
Virtual tabletop. They're platforms that vary in their functions: some are just maps and tokens, some include character sheet management, dice, music, and video. Roll20 is one of the oldest and most popular.
Do you need a PC for it
Usually. They're not great for mobile most of the time.
Most work best on a PC. Some work... okay... on mobile or tablet.
I have a ASUS vivobook dunno if that would work
can confirm, my 4 year old 120$ phone's ram gives up
hope I get a pc one day
Does VTT cost money
Some definitely do
Usually only for the DM.
How does 1 use it, is it a website or a application
Most of them are websites. You log in and join the virtual game
Which the DM sets up for you, kind of like a lobby
And it links with your DnD character? From DnD Beyond
Not automatically. But there are things like the Beyond 20 extension for Roll20
Or your DM could be using the actual DDB maps
Depends on the software, but most can.
I don't build characters on DDB personally, so I don't tend to worry about that part 😅
Seems like alot of work for a digital tabletop game
It can be a lot of work for the DM, yeah. But definitely easier than finding a group in person.
So before i ask to join a session using VTT what should i do
I havent found 1 yet but for the future
For something like roll20, you can create your own login and game and poke around to get familiar with it
For something else where that's less possible, let the DM know you're not familiar and they should be able to help you with the basics
Hi fam, so I am relatively new. What do you feel would be the best class, subclass, or multiclass for some necromancy? I know Wizard has it at lvl 5 (I think) but can any others do anything in a similar vein? Not interested in the Re-animator Artificer as that is a bit too different.
For Necromancy, Wizard and Cleric really are basically your only options. In my opinion, Cleric is much easier to learn than Wizard.
The Necromancer subclass for wizard is the obvious choice. But yeah, I'd probably vote for something like Grave Cleric or maybe Spores Druid since they've got a bit of that vibe
those are some rad suggestions to look into, thank you
But yes, basically any combat summoning is restricted until higher levels like 5+
One thing i wished i could be is just a generic knight, no special abilitys or powers just... a guy in plate with a sword
I mean, there's always Champion
Guy in plate with sword is very champion coded
I didnt see it in DnD Beyond
It's the one free subclass, so that's strange
Really? I thought that was the free option for fighter.
more questions...
how are the species like relicborn, harvestborn, and stoneborn for playing? Fun, boring, difficult?
But I also don't use DDB, so nothing I suggest is based on that 😅
And I've never heard of any of those species so probably third party?
Those all sound like third party or homebrew options? Never heard of them.
Ive been playing so much kingdom come deliverance, swordfighting is just so much better then "FIREBALL" or whatever powers are used
They're referring to Champion, which is a subclass (specialization) that the Fighter class gets at level 3.
If you're looking for a knight or swordfighter, look no further than Fighter
I thought fighter was just a guy that likes to punch things
Nope, a Fighter is a master of all weapons
Punching in particular is more of a monk thing
I think i should redo my character
Also i made a post on DnD Beyond and got dmmed by a DM who actually has a good time zone for me but im a bit skeptical cuz he made no posts or anything and his account is a month and 6 days old
Could be real, could be a scam. Hard to say. Unless they tell you to pay for art, then it's a scam
they are from Crooked Moon and are listed on the D&D Beyond site, but I think you are right as they are not PHB standard species.
D&D Beyond has a lot of third party options, like Crooked Moon
Whether a group allows them is going to be up to the DM
Something being on DDB doesn't make it official content (or even real sometimes for specific coding issues)
Yeah the DM is allowing them
In that case, you might ask in #third-party for opinions
I assumed it was some sort of legacy or third party
I will for sure ask there, thank you.
How does anyone feel about multiclassing Bard and Sorcerer?
Sorry, I am excited and have ideas
Might not be the best. You usually don't want to multiclass unless you've got a specific mechanical interaction that you're aiming for
In most cases, multicasting actually makes you weaker than just putting another level in your current class.
I generally strongly recommend against multiclassing for people still learning the system esp as casters
good to know
I was feeling this as well as I should not attempt until more seasoned
Is there anyway to find a specific Dnd community server ?
Yeah, I've got a lot of weird multiclasses, but they're planned down to the T
Even for seasoned players, multiclassing casters is just kinda gross and annoying sometimes. Not the worst though
The thing to remember is that every level you take in a different class is a level you're not getting in your main class
So it's worth checking the opportunity cost
right. Perhaps specific subclasses then?
It's usually much more effective to plan your subclass and abilities to cater to your vision than to multiclass.
okay, I might dig deeper into that. Thank you all for the help!
Thanks
You could try #looking-for-community and see if they happen to be posted there
But otherwise, you'll probaby just have to search for it if it's public, or get invited if its not
Alr thanks
Is it plagiarism to just get a image from google and make it the photo of my character? Im not claiming i made it
Plenty of people do that. You can always check with your DM later if they're okay with it.
Ok
I'd be relieved if my player wanted to Google artwork for their pc over.. the "art" I usually see
As long as it’s not AI artwork. We do good, honest, grass roots art theft around here!
Haha, i honestly dunno if it is, just took the first image off google, a knight that looked to be sketches
Sketched*
Pinterest and artstation can be pretty good spots to work that are slightly more filtered than google images. Google images is such slop these days it breaks my heart
Yea I have an artist friend who has a better eye on stuff than I do so when I'm making NPCs I ask "hey what about this one" sometimes, or rather often it's super obvious but I like to double check
I find a lot of really good monster art on pinterest ngl, especially for eldritch horror entitites its a great place because the similar results tabs bring up really high quality stuff
Pinterest 🤝
I've got a npc art collection on there that has like 3000 images I can grab and since I'm an artist myself I am fairly confident that none of them are ai
Yeah, I've got a bit of a personal collection for existing and potential characters
Someday I'll finish making the set of tritons whose art is all just Little Mermaid variants
I think as long as you’re not claiming the art as your own and you credit the artist when possible, it’s usually fine for personal use like a character faceclaim or pfp. But it still depends on the artist’s rules since the artwork technically belongs to them.
A good thing to try is like pic crew avatar makers (dnd specified) as you can easily make a good ideal of what they look like. Same with hero forge.
Obviously you won’t get a kinda "100% acurrate" to what you envisioned without actually drawing em/commission an artist
I am still waiting on my moleratfolk paladin commish ong
Can someone help me with my character sheet? Its on an app that's not dnd beyond
What's the issue?
I dont understand some things like
1.Theres strength then score?
Well, I can't exactly say how that particular character sheet has things laid out
But it could be referring to your [Strength Ability Score] and your [Strength Ability Score Modifier].
Thanks and I'll start just by finding a better sheet can you recommend one?
Any classic fillable PDF is a great alternative if you don't want to use the DnD Beyond character builder
And the reason because im not using the DnD beyond on is because of books
Like I've got to pay close to 20€ just for a class and a sub-class?!
That'll be the case no matter what legal method you use is.
Along with what Dosh said, I’d be wary of any site that purports to give paid content for free. Ignoring piracy concerns, you have little way to verify if the “content” the site provides is accurate
If you can’t afford or don’t want to buy the various D&D books that may have the content you want you have a few options to get them without paying:
- Your local game store or library may have 5e books available to view and/or check out
- If you join a campaign on D&DBeyond where at least one person has the book you want and a Master Tier subscription, the DM can turn on content sharing. Other partnered sellers like roll20 have their own method of content sharing as well iirc
Thanks but im already making a sheet and nice that your an artificer!
May I ask something?
Sure go ahead
What would be the best place for
15
13
15

15
As stats for a 5e [Goblin Artificer sub-class Battlesmith]?
Man that is a decidedly...average stat spread
15 int 15 con 15 strength, whatever wherever else
Or 15 Dex instead of strength if you're not going bigger armor
Hey I used the 3d4 method
Is this before or after your ability score increase from your background?
3d4 is not a standard method tbh
And I'm not sure how it gave you those numbers either
3d4+4 is one way to do it
Never even heard of 3d4
I think thats what they mean
I meant roll 4 dice and take away the smallest number
4d6, you mean
Oh, yeah, 4d6 drop low is a standard option
So it's just the before or after stat bonuses question
What?
Though do note that if you don't have a DM yet, you'll likely have to reroll regardless
I do
Are the numbers you listed the straight dice totals?
Minus the smallest number
The guardian of Yggdrasil was asking if that was including your racial stat bonus
Amazing rolls if these are raw numbers without an increase from your background
Then I would stand by the original recommendation and just advise adding+1 to each of the 15s with your bonus
Or since you said 5e, check if your DM is letting you use the option to pick where the bonus goes
Lemme go ask him rq
Just to confirm, you are playing 2014 5e and not 2024 5.5e, correct?
You said 5e goblin artificer.
If they're not letting you use that option, you'll be locked to the default goblin bonuses
-# God I hate the term 5.5e...
I still mostly use 2024 tbh
Fuh
Yeah I’m just going with the official statement on the name change, even though I dislike it too
I compromise by also stating the year of release
So my dm said and the other player that we might be doing a 5e and 5.5e amalgamation
Hm.
I think he said or its just that 5.5e is compatible with 5e
Ah, that's correct.
Generally yes and no. They’re technically compatible with a little adjustment here and there specifically for character creation
I would just ask how they're doing the stat bonuses then. If it's from your background, you'll have to pick one with good options for you or see if he'll let you make a custom one
In that case, your species (Goblin) doesn't grant you any ability score increases. Your background is the source for any ability score increases.
Personally I still only use 2014 backgrounds on my characters for more options, but not everyone allows that
Wait my backround is that I used to work at a forge
Mechanical background not backstory
That's your backstory. Your background is an option picked from a list of backgrounds in the game.
Oh ok
This is actually where the muddying comes in for when a 5e/5.5e mix isn’t specific. Bonus ASIs were tied to species in 5e, and moved to backgrounds in 5.5e. If you’re allowed and planning on using a 5e species or background for a 5.5e character then you’ll need to ignore some parts and add others to make it compatible, and vice versa
So my background is just a goblin that know Dwarven arts
And which of the backgrounds are you choosing to mechanically represent that choice?
Star is trying to make a point: there's a list of backgrounds available to players, and you have to pick one of them to represent that backstory of yours.
Free rules has a couple options to look at but if you're in a campaign where the dm is allowing 5.5e and 5e they likely have books to give you a wider option of choices
If I may ask Iroh, have you read the free basic rules yet? The information about backgrounds is step 2 of Chapter 2
Though that’s for the 2024 5.5e basic rules. It’s again slightly different for the old 2014 5e rules which is why it’s important for your DM to be specific
Sounds like the DM is running a 2024 campaign and allowing older content as well.
Ah fair enough
To which: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step2DetermineOrigin
Would be the section Iroh would want to read up on
Hmmm
Hi is there a place I can look for campagins to join?
A hermit Artificer Battle Smith?
If you’d like to use this server to find a group the instructions are in #find-a-game
Thanks!
Hermits decent but I recommend choosing a background that can give you an increase to your Intelligence since you’re playing an Artificer
Can you recommend one?
What if I've put a 15 as intelligence?
Backgrounds like Sage or Acolyte can provide an Intelligence bonus. There’s a few more in the PHB as well
And you should generally want to maximize your primary ability score(s) anyway. That usually means starting with a 17 in that stat (or one of them, if you have multiple)
You can also ask your DM if they are allowing you to put your ASIs anywhere. It's an optional rule for 5e but I use it for 5.5e as well.
ASIs?
every 4 levels or so you get the option to boost your ability scores or take a feat.
"Ability Score Increase"
Oh thanks
What spiffy said is right but for what I'm talking about is the ones you get from your starting background. Hermit background gives you the option to put either +2/1 or +1,+1,+1 in 3 ability scores. Those being Con, Wis and Cha. As an artificer you want your Intelligence as high as you can generally speaking. You don't have to of course. The optional rule I brought you would allow you to put those bonuses stats in any ability scores you wanted. Not just the ones stated by the Hermit background.
You will need to ask your DM if it's allowed tho
Oh ok! Tysm!
Hi

Hello, how can I play dnd, kinda new here. LFG
You can find info for how to play above and in #learn-to-play. Directions for finding a group are in #find-a-game!
Hi guys ive spent the last few weeks mustering up the courage just to talk in this server, Ive never played DnD but recently watched some campaigns like critical role and the shows based on that, as well as playing BG3, ive become enamored with this game as a concept and im curious was to where I can start, sorry if this is a common question or if im in the wrong place, I would appreciate any advice :)

#learn-to-play and the first two sections of the rules linked above are the best spots to start!
I am new to being a DM and I just made my first story, idk if I did it right or not
really your story is only wrong, if your players aren't having fun
"Am I wrong? No, surely it is the players who are wrong."
-# your players or you aren’t having fun, I’d argue
true
Assassin
Seconding assassin, but only if the DM understands how surprise actually works lol
Thief is the one I think is actually best mechanically
Especially in 2014, I'd go Thief over Assassin
2024 is a bit more even
Counterpoint, teaching a newbie the joy of 2014 assassin bugbear
Teaching a newbie the sorrow of trying to actually get surprise....
I’m told as long as you aren’t spotted you don’t enter combat you keep surprised on them
Go goblin get bombs sneak up reverse pickpocket them
This isn't fallout, get outta here!
Arcane thief with mage hand to plant explosives from a distance though 👀
I mean, if a DM allowed it that's one thing
Just for clarity, since folks are throwing around some more complicated concepts here, do you know which ruleset your DM is using?
Yeah but less personal then
But bombs can't be assumed to even exist in a game by default
hello people
It’s an item and can craft em or smoke bombs
wheres a tavern and a bounty board
This is the newbie channel, remember
i am new lol
This isn't that kind of server
Or mix said items to make a bomb it’s a base part of dnd most just don’t think a ton it
It's a place to talk about D&D, not roleplay D&D
Bombs are an optional part of the game, subject to DM approval
And thus should not be assumed
what channel is - i made a sheet and want to fight stuff
This server doesn't host games
Not how dnd works
You can look for games in #looking-for-players
I think you might be misunderstanding, friend.
Once you've got a good understanding of the DnD Basic Rules, you can check out #find-a-game to learn how to start your search for a group.

So, ik a bit about how dnd works. I'm in a campaign rn actually, but there is a lot of downtime, so I got time to spare
Cool - well take a look at id:browse to see our many D&D channels for specific D&D topics and feel free to discuss D&D with the rest of us!
This channel is more for new to D&D folks to get help with getting started with the core game rules/mechanics.
If you have a specific question or something, the community can help answer it - but also welcome to the server!
oh thanks
Hello, i’m completely new to dnd but have always been interested. I was hoping to look for some assistance and also just converse with experienced players! I’m a bit intimidated but also excited to learn :]
try checking #learn-to-play and just talk around in #dnd-discussion
you can find the free basic rules on dnd beyond, a good place to start, #find-a-game for if you want to try join a game, tho for new players it's better to play in-person games
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you very much
Hi, I'm not a new player, but my GF is.
What's the best way I can go about collaborating with her in creating a character?
She hasn't read much of the rules, nor does she know a lot of lore. All she knows is she wants to play. And I'm DMing for this campaign.
Talk about what she wants to play. If she likes spell casting, being a martial or something in between
Show her a couple of the species and see if any stand out to her
Not kowing lore shouldnt really be an issue, just explain in broad terms the setting then give the rundown of the world like you would to any other llayer
Keep it simple. Does she want to swing swords or sling spells? Fighter or Wizard. Don’t lay on the rules too thick before you start, let that happen as you play.
Hello Nephew Tubox You are very welcome to our community!😁
Thanks a lot man i appreciate it
It is my pleasure!😁
But actually i am Indian and here people still play snake and ladder so i am a bit left out here
So this sis newcomers section right , well i am playing a rouge level 2

Why are you calling me newphew btw
Its just how I call people sometimes
Okay great so are you aleader or somthin
Im as new as you!
Maybe not as new to the server but newer to DnD
Playing DnD I've watched a lot about it
Okayyyy so what do you play rouge barbarian or somthin else
Yeah totally its very great game
A Goblin Artificer sub-class Battlesmith I wish to play as
Plz dont mind my typo😅
I do typos too sometimes!😁
Nicee very detail , like i mean i dont even know what it is
Artificer is like a magic car mechanic
I mean we can actually play gobblin like we can select goblin race
Ah hum i see
Battlesmith is like a guy with a not so big robot
Sorry my knowledge is a bit too beginners level
Crazy...
I mean by this he can turn a lot a thing into living things but not permanently
Ohh isee i understand it a little bit now
The robot is called Steel Defender
No that's the name of the creature you can give it an actual name like copperclank
Im planing with a few people
Maybe in like summer
Inst it summer already

Hey folks - don't share your exact age. It is against server rules (see section on User Safety)
Oh sorry!!
Be careful with what details you share online here
Ok
Lemme delet sorry
We try and keep this a safe place but we've had unfortunate incidents of folks specifically targeting minors so we ask that everyone just not share personally identifying infromation here.
Thanks!
So sorry
Seems like common courtesy isn't common
Btw lroh i think i can call that , do you recommend so party or group for me
Sorry!! Ill try not to do again
Welcome to the official D&D server! If you're new to D&D, check out #learn-to-play and the basic free rules pinned here in the channel
And check out id:browse to see all our many channels for disucssing D&D
If you're looking for a game, read #find-a-game and see how to use our Looking For Game channels
So uh I'd have to add you to a Minecraft clan server, that i dont feel comfortable about
As a note it's off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels
So take game organizing to direct messages or the LFG channels
That's kinda waht I said?
Oh I was just sharing information generally - it wasn't directed directly at you
Oh ok
Okay okay i mean i am still learning everything sorry if a m breaking any rules
If you need a refresher of the server rules: #rules
If you need clarification or have a question about them, go to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator
Thank you!!
You're all good though - so back to D&D
Kay thanks appreciate your help
man, its sad that D&D is heading in a licensing digital books direction rather than staying with owning physical books.
things change. i just gotta deal with that.
Did you mean to post this in #dnd-discussion?
And no, D&D is still quite happy selling printed books.
doh
Printed books however take a lot of time and effort and are not as easy to correct mistakes.
And logistics of printing and shipping and distributing can really make it expensive.
But D&D has no plans to discontinue printing/physical.
well, they're happy selling physical books for now. but with all of this tied in digital preorder bonuses and digital maps and whatnot, i feel like its eventually going to go the straight digital route. there's a whole lot more they can do via live service digital platform kinda thing.
as i said, i just gotta get used to things changing. it happens
why is this in the newcomers channel haha, i fear this might discourage new players from playing the game when viewing this channel
Might be true
its like that part in the ASDF meme video thing, the "I'm gonna do an internet!" guy vs the "I'm gonna do a book!" guy.
I can see the concern and though I have no direct insight into what exactly the c-suite at WoTC/D&D are planning, they have made it clear they want to offer more digital offerings as it increases access/affordability but ultimately they want D&DBeyond to provide "D&D books/tools/services anywhere/anytime". But they have also made it clear they are not getting rid of physical. They just see this as extending the D&D product beyond physical offerings.
But yeah we should let the channel get back to it's intended topic lol
on the upside, the vast majority of newbies i've run into absolutely thrive on the online platform. its awesome. they navigate it so well.
anyways, back to my original reason in popping in this morning. physical character sheets. between the 5e character sheet and the 5.5e character sheet, which one seems to work better in sessions for newbies navigating info?
like i'm experienced so i have bias.
I think its because they used a lot of tech before starting DnD so its easier for them to navigate
yeah. i'm over here struggling to actually turn on and off rage in the thing. they're going in and trying to figure out how to program in homebrew on like day three.
however, there's times where they find out that the homebrew thing they wanted to make already exists as a base feature they can access.
as a dnd newbie, i think digital is nice because you have all these supporting systems helping build your first character. I do think its a lil worse that you also need the digital book in stuff like dnd beyond to make a chaarcter sheet to get the subroles you want but still its nice cause it just helps out a lot
i've seen a lot of newbies still accidentally buying intermixed 5e and 5.5e physical books and getting really confused.
I agree, the 5.5e core books especially could be a little more obvious that they are a distinctly updated edition. I’ve had some new players purchase the physical PHB recently and it wasn’t clear to either of them. It seems like most groups have at least 1 member (probably the DM?) that keeps up with all the happenings so I suppose it works out. If it’s a group of all brand new players? The Starter Set is probably the right call.
i agree on any starter set being the better intro. it limits the scope and choice paralysis until there's more knowledge
my go-to is the essentials kit rulebook for newbies. unless they're using pre-gens, then the 5e starter set rulebook's fine.
yep i bought the dragon peak box thinking it had everything i needed to run our first campain
Hi, any tips on playing an online dnd one shot as a first time DM? I got a group of 5 friends together but we’re like forced to do it online because of proximity. And I’m the only one who is wiling to DM so… I need help
i can't stress this enough, in whatever platform you are using for voice, make sure everyone is on push to talk instead of voice detect.
We were just gonna use a discord group chat to be honest since we all discuss through there anyway
Like virtual table top ? Yea. Is roll20 good? Or do you have another suggestion
i dont use VTTs, someone else is asking about them in the #dnd-discussion channel so you might want to pop in there.
For third-party tools, services, and products we also have the #third-party channel
I see i see, thank you both ill look at both those channels
So like that would be the best channel to ask about various VTTs and their pros and cons
This list is a good crash course of tips, but the whole guide is worth reading: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet
The only major thing missing—in my opinion, anyway—is a pre-game conversation about preferences and expectations. People can bring very different ideas about the game to the table, which can create friction more than fun. Talking it through to get everyone on the same page can save a lot of headaches.
Ok I’ll give that a read over this weekend!
hi everyone
Hi guys
hi
should i build a character in advance or wait till i have a group to play?
depends
have you chosen a group to play with
?
it is generally advised to make a practice character to learn how to make characters
i have actually never played dnd and am just starting out now too
tho i have school and i am always occupied so i can only play on the weekends
No problem with playing around with character builds. But I’d suggest staying reserved on the backstory type details until you know more about the campaign and setting you’ll be slotting that character into. Some groups may have a need for a specific class to balance the party (no hard rules here) so you may find your build isn’t a good fit depending on the group you join.
You can have many different character builds just sitting there ready to go, but fleshing them out into an actual character with a backstory and ties to the campaign, the world, it’s characters, and the other player’s characters comes after you’re in the group
ok thank you
Is it possible to do dnd with text messages?
Im very bad at speaking in general and are more used to speaking in text messages
nah only joined today and i am still looking for people to start a campaign with
Definitely possible, but certainly comes with it’s own set of challenges
Yes it is! Not only that it's possible to be the only player in a session who's doing so. You don't need a full dedication Play By Post(although it is recommended) we've had players in our Westmarch who don't talk while everyone else does. That player simply typed in chat things they did/say. It takes patience and not all groups will do it but they are out there.
I mean I can still be in vc and hear others, I just can't speak
If everyone is on board and willing then that’s great!
Yea just let people know your position in any LFG posts you make
Also, how to make a dnd with a different setting? (Like based on a series)
What do you have to take in consideration?
Dnd is simply a set of rules. As long as you're following those rules they can be in whatever setting you want. If you need help with world building you can head to #dm-world-building
If you haven't read the basic tho I wouldn't jump the gun quite yet. Are you new to DND?
I did one campaign a year ago and dropped out halfway so I have mostly forgotten stuff..
OK good then. You're not starting from total scratch. Feel free to ask around then. #dm-world-building being the main one who will likely help
Yeah but what if like the entire system is different, like what base is it required to have first
If you want to change the system then you're not playing dnd unfortunately. But luckily for everyone dnd is not the only system! Daggerhart, Pathfinder, CoC. VtM are all beloved ttrpgs and maybe one of those would fit better for what you have in mind. Dnd homebrew is best it's is mostly still just dnd. In my opinion anyway
Not like the system of the play, I meant like the system of the story, Like what if It's not based on a fantasy setting at all?
Oh. That's totally fine. Lots of modern or sci-fi stories have been told using dnd rulesets
I've see WWII dnd, Space dnd, New York in the 1920s dnd
Oh right right, I did enter a sci fi dnd back then, I guess I'll try to read the old msg if I can find it..
I helped my brother set up a warhammer themed dnd once
what's the deal with familiars in dnd?
do only wizards get them? no other class?
and if yes how do they get it? just pick the find familiar spell during character creation?
Anyone can get a familiar if they have a way to get the Find Familiar spell
But yes, you have to prepare and cast the spell
but acc to dndbeyond the find familiar spell is only for wizards
And druids get a form of familiar (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level2WildCompanion). As do certain warlocks (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#PactoftheChain).
I'll be playing a Drow Warlock in my first game later this month. Hoping to get a familiar.
where do i actually find info about this? i couldnt find anything in the basic rules or PHB other than the find familiar spell card
See the above links!
2 things. 1. D&D Beyond isn't always 100% accurate unless you're actually reading the book text.
2. A spell only being on the wizard list doesn't mean there aren't other ways to get it
By default; other classes can gain access to it either by access to the wizard spell list or as a class feature. A fighter with Magic Initiate Wizard as their Origin feat can have a familiar if they so wish.
You'll need Pact of the Chain for that
got ittt
also, what's the duration for a familiar?
Until it dies or you dismiss it
indefinite untill its recalled or 'dies'
but to call it you need a spell slot right
Yes
Only the initial casting
alrightt
If it's in familiar space, you can just bring it back
whats familiar space?
Ratatoskr was using a colloquialism for where your familiar “goes” when you dismiss it
Familiar Heaven
Its dimensional pokeball.
is there any feat that allows rogue or bard to get a familiar?
Hey, a third of all familiars are fiends! They get familiar Hell!
Magic Initiate (Wizard) would be one way.
Yes, it’s called Magic Initiate(Wizard). You can take it at first level and you get two cantrips and a 1st level spell of your choice, which could be Find Familiar
We might be moving onto #character-discussion or #dnd-discussion tbh. Not quite sure I'll let others decide. I don't know the limits of conversations in this channel tbh.
Is having a familiar crucial to your character concept?
ohh my bad. i figured since these are like. beginner questions i would ask them here
No you're good. I also don't know which is why I'm asking 😅
This channel is a bit mushy
If it's basic character stuff, here is usually fine
When it gets more detailed, kick it over to #character-discussion or #optimization
right now im a DM so im just gathering info, but after my campaign is over and my friend DMs im planning to play a rogue or bard and would like to have a familiar
but nothing too detailed right now, just curious
i was trying to look this all up on the websites but its so confusing and i cant figure out where exactly to look
and sometimes i get paywalled so i come here. this server is so helpful
So, yeah, you're only going to be able to see the free options on legit websites without paying
Oof yea that'll happen
Though I'd probably pick one to focus on rather than jumping around
Do you have access to the Player’s Handbook?
that, i do
That should be where most of this is located
What are you getting from other websites, if I may ask?
idk if i can talk about uh.... other means here since this is the official server. i dont want to get in trouble
i mostly look up stuff on d&dBeyond and roll20 compendium. sometimes d&dwiki
D&D Wiki is not trustworthy.
Fair enough; I would suggest sticking to the options in the Player’s Handbook for now if you’re finding other sources confusing. D&Dwiki is largely homebrew of middling quality, would not advise using it.
hi
yeah i only go there if im trying to look up lore or homebrewing things
There’s not really any official lore there; I would suggest maybe the Forgotten Realms wiki or even the Greyhawk encyclopedia online
It's not worth using in general. It muddles things together and the homebrew that's there is wildly out of whack.
gotcha
For lore, I'd recommend the Forgotten Realms wiki generally: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
Assuming 2024, they're all in the PHB, I believe.
The quick notes:
- Fiend: devil stuff
- Great Old One: mind stuff
- Archfey: fairy stuff
Others exist but that'll get you started.
Ok im brand new to online dnd and i have not played since 2.5 Someone want to walk me through this lol im an old guy

Im looking into getting into VTT
yeah, follow the links on those posts. VTT's got so much lag on my old computer i don't even bother trying to anymore
Skim the first couple of sections of the basic rules (linked above), have a go at bolting a character together. You'll need a class, background and species. Pick what you like, ask any questions here.
One note: the feat for soldier is for melee weapons so may not be super useful for a mainline spellcasting type.
Realized I forgot to send this earlier, but here's my two cents:
Any sort of genre is technically possible in D&D since D&D is at base just a system of mechanics. However, D&D was made inherently to service a specific genre, heroic fantasy. That means that the further you stray from those themes the worse the system will be at servicing the new genre(s) in a way that is satisfactory.
Plenty of official D&D settings play around with other genres, such as Noir for Eberron or Sci-Fi for Spelljammer, but the core is still mostly heroic fantasy. When you want to lean much further into other genres then you'll want to strongly consider switching TTRPGs to one built for the kind of fantasy you want to play (e.g. Cyberpunk RED for Cyberpunk, Call of Cthulhu for Eldritch Horror, Mutants & Masterminds for Superheroics, etc)
Helloo
Howdy. What's on your mind?
I am like new new to this. Like I have watched a few YouTube videos new

I was wondering if you'll havs any tips
That's a broad question! If you want tips on something specific, that'd give folks something me to go n!
Like how do you start to play? I need to find people to play with, but I don't even know what I am doing so how can I join a party?
Do I make a character first?
don't make deals with Asmodeus. he won't cheat on a contract, but the details and terms tend to be very one-sided.
you can make a character first. often people mess around with the online character thing on dndbeyond. make some ideas, check how things work.
it helps if you learn the rules in steps
I have the softcopy of the player's handbook
Sure!
-
Be honest and open about your own expectations. A bad game often starts when the players and DM haven't agreed what's going to be on the table.
-
Be prepared. Know your character, their features, the rules of the game.
-
Last, be enthusiastic! Engage, explore, experiment. Ask questions, be open to new experiences. Involve the other players and have fun.
You can photocopy the example character sheet in the back of that and make a practice character to understand how it works
which handbook? the 5e handbook from 2014 or the 5.5e handbook from 2024?
2024 edition
I made a character, was just messing around
That’s great! Try to find clubs or ongoing games in person if you can, or search online if you can commit the time. I suggest making your “real” character once you have a party to play with and can make choices based on the decisions they’ve made to make a character that fits well at that table.
Also so from the way everyone is talking I'm assuming that I need to find a group and play with them mostly? Like this is not a one and done kind of situation?
Yes
it's doable, but less fun to play consistently with strangers every game
like way way way less fun
There are some unofficial rules for playing solo/with one other person, but the game is largely a social game and so you should try to find people you feel comfortable playing with long term; either friends you already have or other folks you can trust as a new player
you can play in one-shots. those are single sitting or two if they run long. self contained adventures that don't have a long storyline that goes on for months in real life
but generally its much easier to play with a regular group of people
Finding people offline is gonna be a challenge, I don't think most people around here where I live even know what dnd is
Okkkk I seee
thats how new dungeon masters are made
oh, be prepared to make mistakes. it happens. these tabletop role playing games use words and math dice and language so they are pretty fault tolerant. as long as everyone agrees to roll something back or disregard something, its all good.
I mean if I wrangle my friends into this, one of us will have to be a dm. And i think dm has to be someone experienced no?
It helps but isn't necessary. Someone had to be the first DM!
not at all. how do you think dms get their experience? by being first-timers too
im not pushing you to dm or anything, just letting you know that's a very common thing for dnd enjoyers to pick up the mantle & dm when nobody else is!
Not at all; how do you think any DM got started
also be prepared for your DM to pull some shenanigans that are not specifically in the rules. like making you roll a CON save because your character ate some questionable sushi hours earlier. does that usually happen? no. but it can be pretty funny.
Speaking from experience lol?
sometimes failing a role can be just as or more entertaining than having success.
Lol ok I will look into it, thanks for the info!
I'm the DM. though it was tacos, and whether they could handle the spice. fail just meant their next roll was at disadvantage. but the players thought the whole thing was entertaining.
Ohh lmaooo
This tidbit from Matt Colville is good advice in less than 30 seconds: https://youtu.be/p-o1hxU59nY?t=1161
the absolute best piece of advice i can give new people is to read Peril in Pinebrook by Young Minds Inspired. Its a fairly short and straightforward adventure. reading it all the way through gives a great idea on how playing and running the game works. like, it doesn't teach specific rules, but more like the flow of things.
as for first time DMing, the Starter Sets have more or less everything you might need.
Oh yeah every vid i watch is like this. It's nice that the community is so welcoming
That a comic?
no, its an adventure you can run.
but its short enough to read through even if you are just a player.
it explains stuff very efficiently to guide through the adventure.
I am not sure i get what you mean by adventure i can run??? Like is it a manual, or like a explained campaign?
okay, so D&D is often split into three things. first is the rules themselves. that's in things like the handbook. next is the characters, which are built up using the rules, but that's just what the characters have available. you can use imagination to bring them to life. then the third part is an adventure, which gives the character things to do
It's a prewritten campaign you can play through
often you'll find rule books or settings, and adventure books or campaigns. Peril in Pinebrook would be an adventure for characters to go on. like Lunarith said, a pre-written thing to play through.
Okkkk I see it on the website, I'll download it
my go-to sampler campaign used to be Hunt for the Thessalhydra. that thing has a little bit of everything in a single questline without overwhelming new players. but Peril in Pinebrook is shorter and describes things so much better.
Where can I find a list of online games?
check out #find-a-game
and follow the instructions there
Can anyone suggest me 6 spells and 3 cantrips for my level 3 inquisition cleric?
Its my first time playing cleric so idk what to get
what level?
guidance, sacred flame, thaumaturgy.
bless, cure wounds, healing word, spiritual weapon, lesser restoration.
remember you can change your 1st and 2nd level spells every dawn as part of your long rest. you have access to all of the 1st level and 2nd level cleric spells, you can only prepare so many per day.
If you take Healing Word I would leave out Cure Wounds
in that case, maybe swap it for inflict wounds
That's a good list. Beyond those, I also enjoy Toll the Dead and Guiding Bolt.
Oo okay thank you
I love Toll of the Dead
with thaumaturgy you need not ever actually open an unlocked door yourself. just slam it open. slam it closed. from across the room
Oh apparently i know 1 extra cantrip lol
if you can, prestidigitation's pretty damned awesome.
I don't think clerics can get that one?
hit me up if you know a game i can join..
no, that would have to be through something else that would give you access to wizard cantrips.
I mean i still meed to get 2 feats that i havent chose which one to get
Ability increase for Wisdom?
if your DM allows you, get the "i can do anything if i slip my DM a $20" feat. its a very rare homebrew feat, but not unheard of. (don't do this, its not a thing)
We're playing level 3 on a grimmhollow world
1 feat from human and 1 from this custom background
i'm having a blast with the charger feat on my orc. however i don't think you have access to that at level 1
warcaster might be a good idea, if it does the same thing as it did in 5e
Old school 2.5 D&D player returning after several years away from the game. Looking for a fun, Forgotten Realms–based campaign and a group willing to help me learn the newer rules.
I’m retired and have a flexible schedule, so I’m available to play several times during the week. Prefer a relaxed, story-driven group with good people and a welcoming atmosphere.

Gang how do I ask my DM less questions as a spellcaster
I feel like I ask WAY too many
Should I just assume things RAW more?
I don't think there's an answer beside learn the rules and read your spells
Spells do what they say and nothing more or less
The questions are like "how would you run phantasmal force" and "how do you run Heliana rules"
It's when they are vague that gets me
I mean you ask that once and you're done with it?
Or when something seems feasible for the spell but isn't explicitly feasible
?
The problem is I have a LOT of questions like that
Are you doing this in the session?
They tend to be very explicit; what sort of vague spells are you running into?
Well, outside of certain Enchantment/Illusion spells
No it's out of the session I just still feel like I'm bombarding my dm with questions and I feel guilty
Talk with your DM out of game and ask it they think yer asking too many questions and if so, what / how do they want to handle it between you two
Phantasmal force is the only thing that you can argue you can ask your DM how they react if their weapons turns into a snake
Mitcho said just what I was typing!
that's a 10 second conversation
The certain enchantment and illusion spells are exactly the ones I'm running...
That'd do it XD
Yeah, questions are 1000% fair with those
We can’t help how you and your DM interact, only u two can
Yeah I mean I'm just trying to think of things I can do on MY part
I need more ideas
I'm not that experienced. Despite being mechanically adept.
There is no magic trick, if you want to ask the DM how you wanna influence people with suggestion and stuff you ask him in the moment
Oof
I mainly wanna use it in combat to cast spells that require willing targets because it's funny...
"Dm can I hide myself in a box made by Minor Illusion?"
"Yes" / "No"
"I cast Minor Illusion like that"
That's how Imagine my conversation would go
I guess just finding more concrete ways to do the stuff I want would be something I could do.
Less subject to DM fiat I mean
Mostly everything is under DM fiat
sigh yeah.
It is what it is
I mean, if you're trying to get spells to do things they don't do normally, you could just... not 😅
If you feel guilty about asking those questions, you don't have to
Everyone everytime they ask the DM if they can do something, leads it to the under the DM Fiat thing.
No reason for you to be guilty
It's all roleplaying game, it's a big part of that
Just imaginging a mage going full Metal Gear in a 5.5e stealth mission, repeatedly casting minor illusion so it just looks like they're a crate
Ye, Illusion and Enchantment magic are heavily within DM fiat territory; depending on your DM they can either be the absolute best or absolute worst spells in the game
what is fiat? the car?
so they'd be invisible? waking by the wall?
Fiat means the DM decides
but is it an acronym or something
ohh, I'll google fiat then tnx
It means an arbitration, decree, mandate, order, etc
Hello 👋 I’m new to dnd, is there a way to play as a skeleton?
You could easily reflavor the Reborn Species into being a skeleton
or the Custom Origin species from Tasha's Cauldron of Eveything
Or just pick whichever species you want to play and use that stat block but describe them as being a skeleton; flavor is free and you're allowed to describe things however you want so long as it uses legal rulestext c:
Ok thx, I’m new to all of this so I don’t know much but does this cost a lot of money
Cuz I’m poor
Nope. Free Rules are free, additional content is often shared within a group.
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)

- [Frequently Asked Questions](#learn-to-play message)
Ok thx
How is content shared
Within a campaign group, depending on if the DM has content sharing available. In-person anyone can lend you a book, it's a little more complicated online.
Within the DnDbeyond website, if the Dungeon Master who hosts the game has bought content books they can share it when you join their hosted campaign
Ok thx
As with most hobbies, yes
There can be, but once you get the basics down the rest will come. You don't need to know how every class works, just the one you're playing.
Take a gander there
Class?
Oh
Nvr mind
Like a job. Fighters fight, wizards cast spells, and so on.
I’m going to read the rules and stuff and return if I have more questions
Willingness to read the rules before asking additional questions is already a great sign. You'll go far, my friend!
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game
Thx
Ok I’ve read the rules and did the tutorial, now I’m going to create a character but I have a few questions now
Ask away. Even if I don't respond promptly someone will
Ok thx
So when I create my character, for example I choose human, but I would like to play as a skeleton. Could I just say in the details that he is a skeleton
Flavor wise there is no rule agaisnt that but yoi wont be able to change anything mechanically. So youd be a "skeleton" who still needs to breath air, sleep, can be poisoned, ect. On top of that a DM can say a fully intelligent skeleton doesn't fit in my setting or something similar.
As in, play a skeletal species or get mechanical benefits for being a skeleton?
The closest official option would be the Reborn lineage
Ask the DM really nicely and hope they say yes. There is. Reborn species but I don't know what that is or does
Ok, how do I get the reborn species
Reborn is a lineage that’s a sort of catch-all for a lot of classical “reanimated humanoid” characters
It is most likely pay walled. Some(or most in my experience) DMs allow content sharing so if they own the class/species amd invite you to their game you may get access to it. Similarly if they own the books irl and you're in an irl game they might let you use the book.
Oh, damn I’m poor lol
The species can be found in the book Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. It will also be in the upcoming book Ravenloft: The Horrors Within
it is; it's in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft
And I don’t know anyone is a DM
My players have all my stuff but I don't own Reborn.
Whenever you join a game you could see if the DM has the book you need. Otherwise your local game store or library might have the book available to peruse/check out
It's why making a character for a campaign is ill-advised until you're actually invited to one. A reborn may not be thematically appropriate same with a living skeleton. Nothing wrong with making on for fun of course. Just be prepared for a DM to say no unfortunately
Ok no problem, how do I get invited
Try #find-a-game
Making a character before a game is alright too, actually. It’s really good to reinforce learning the rules, but don’t expect 100% to have it be accepted when entering a campaign
Ok cool
Yea star puts it better than what I said
How long do games usually last
That depends, most sessions are usually around 3-6 hours, campaigns can last months to years
Jeez
For a typical campaign sessions are between 2-4 hours in my experience. The length of a campaign covers many sessions, though the exact number of sessions is dependent on the group and the adventure being run
Depends on the game. One shot? 4-8 hours. Multi shot? Month? Mini campaign 6mo to a year. Full campaign 1yr to several
Ok
Essentially there’s no one average answer. It depends on what you and the group want to do
2~4 is a more reasonable range for online play; but they can really be of any length the table is comfortable with and has time for
Yee. My campaign I'm hoping will last 18mo-ish. But each session is 4 hours on average
Playing DnD is fun
It'll always be the players/dm who make it fun. Just gotta hope you find the right people to vibe with
Coool
TBF, a lot of Offical Hardcover Adventures are a lot shorter than that; though you can chain them together or branch off of one to go into a homebrew campaign
Reborn don't need to eat, drink, or breathe. They also don't sleep in the conventional sense but enter a motionless state for 4 hours during which you retain conciousness
Skelebro seems quite feasible
ye; it's the most mechanically reasonable but it's both paywalled and a lot of DMs down't allow the source book its from outside of a Ravenloft/CoS campaign
Ok this might sound really dumb but: is there a way to play by yourself
if it's available; use it, but be ready to need to reflavor something else instead and politely ask your DM if you can skip the need to breathe/eat/drink and be okay with it if they say no
Ok
Not a dumb question and yes. I don't really recommend solo dnd. but there is stuff out there for it if you really want to.
gimme a sec; I have a few free COYA book links somewhere
Also shoutout to CRPGs which don’t necessarily entirely scratch that itch but do a good job of it
first one is rather good; second one is a bit broken due to needing to fail a roll to proceed to the exit
requires you know at least the basics on how combat works though
What are COYAs
Choose Your Own Adventure
basically it's a book that you follow allong with that tells you which chapter to jump to based on if you suceed or fail a roll or based on a list of choices
it walks you through an entire self contained adventure
you can either use the included character sheet or make your own
I recomend recording which chapters you were recerntly on incase you want to backtrack
I think I will continue to try and learn more before I really start to try to play publicly or start to find friends to play with
there's also this https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
it's a little module that they put out to help people get the feel for the game
I'll give you the recomended reading and resources then; just for reference or if you need any of it c:
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers or check out the resources in #learn-to-play ; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
I did that already
