Not traditionally, but I have a druid who's very much a sponge for culture. Flavor is free!
Oh I love that, and personally was looking high Cha with some Fey forced in
But I mean, regarding the blanket comments about rp interactions and druid
They can if you want them to be.
All proficiency really represents is training. How that training is rationalized is kind of up to you.
Maybe the History/Nature/Arcana proficiency came from the teachings of a mentor, or a long time communing with nature in magical ways. Or they could be ancient teachings left by druids before you. Whatever works for your vibe, whatever fits in the setting your character lives in
Rather than fun character-specific stuff
But you can't have all high stats, so while you can play your druid character as if they are good socially, lacking the mechanics to back that up can deflate the feeling sometimes.
Point buy does make it a sacrifice even mechanically indeed
Or I guess it always is unless straight 18s
Flaws/weaknesses are good. It makes for spaces for your teammates to fill in.
Yeah. It's (usually) a team/group game. So specialization is kind of expected.
Plus, IMO characters that don't have flaws are kind of boring, haha
Why is my headcannon for straight 18s a rich halfling bard and nothing else?
It's that damn halfling luck.
Think it's possible to find a campaign to play if I'm an otr driver and my schedule is kinda wack?
There's play-by-post, westmarches, and Adventurers League, so I think it's doable. Even trickier than finding a traditional game (which is already challenge enough!).
But possible.
Nah halflings are still lucky. Mechanically, and it's baked into their lore. Even in 5.24
5.24 is really funny and now I'm stealing that
That's what I've been calling it since it dropped and I know I'm not the only one
Even if you were, you aren't now
Although it is now technically D&D 5.5e, but I still say 14 or 24
Kinda, yeah. I just don't call it 5.5 because WotC has never called it that. Whereas 3.5 was explicitly called 3.5
wellll... actually WoTC has renamed it to 5.5 because that's what most of the community was starting to call it.
let me see if I can find the post
Oh word
I admit I still like to use 2014/2024 personally since I feel like that's clearer overall. Given that the books all still say 5th edition
Using 5.5e involves a whole mental debate on whether I think the person will know what that means
Same... but I understand also why WoTC decided to re-name it.
Yeah I'm not mad about that. Just not switching my language 😁
Yeah, 5e's push away from jargon and toward plain English is a double edged sword.
Great for speaking and teaching plainly, sometimes a PITA for clarity and semantics
I don't necessarily disagree, but I was only talking about the edition name
Though it extends to even talking about it in a meta sense.
Lets not clog up this channel with this debate LOL
Couldn't find the exact post but here's the FAQ answer: https://dndbeyond-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us/articles/46714465734164-What-s-Changing-on-D-D-Beyond
Sorry, I wasn't really trying to split hairs or start debates, that's my bad.
finally up for trying D&D again, last time I played it was 1986 but now my daughters into it and it gives us something to share :). I got the 2024 PHB via roll20, now i gotta figure out how to do gaming online (do i make a level 1 character, level 3, etc)? Any tips for an old guy?
?tag new online
Pretty good info in the bot
thanks!
Hi! I’m v new and wanting to learn more and experience playing Thanks for posting the guide
hi! new dm here and new to dnd! how do u guys incorporate the battlefield maps into your games? do you print it out? draw it? just trying to figure out what works best!
it depends on what wors best for you. sometimes ill find one online. othertimes, when im creative i make one tailored to the adventure. what works best and hat you feel like doing, basicaly
ty! how do u incorporate it into the game? like i’ve seen all the amazing minis but how do u use them on the map?
Hello all, Old head D&D player from the pencil and paper era, just signed up for D&D Beyond. Looking to join a game as player. I can and have DM'd in the past but I am very rusty.
If you get a grid map, each square is generally designed to be 5 fr
So you just put the minis on their squares and use it to show positioning
Personally I actually use a Pathfinder map cause it happens to fold well and is both dry and wet erase
You'll probably want to check out the #looking-for-players channel and see if anything interests you
Thanks will do!
Greetings from the land of down under aka Australia 🇦🇺
G’day, fellow Aussie
Hi guys nice to meet everyone, absolute newbie here
If brand brand new to the game, we have #learn-to-play and #dnd-newcomers that can help get you started with some of the basics! Then when ready to #find-a-game we've got that channel covered too. (And if ever lost #channel-guide can really help out- we got a lot of 'em
)
And in here we can chat anything D&D.
...I realise we are in #dnd-newcomers .
Lemme just go.. finish my coffee.
Lol
If i'm in melee of a creature (5 feet) and it becomes feared do i get an attack of opportunity?
if it exits that 5 foot radius of me
As in under the effects of Fear? Yes you get an attack of opportunity
Are you creating it on paper, D&Dbeyond or something else?
This chapter in the basic rules goes over character building, so it might help:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
What class do u want to play?
paladin
Beyond
I exist
Good to know
It depends on the lizardfolk rogue
Beyond is quite automated in the character building department. Anything in particular that is confusing to you?
I know how to do the building thing. I just haven’t played the game yet.
OK palidins are a slightly complicated class to start with but no where near the most difficult
If your using dnd beyonds charicter create you just need to follow the steps (put class race and background in [also remember to chose spells in the class page after selecting it])
The only thing that isn't explained is where u put your different abilitys (I would recommend having streangth or charisma as your highest and then get the other one and constitution as high as u can)
i am a complete beginner , and somehow i have created a charater , now what?
Can you send the link to the sheet here? We can review it
Depends on how you play it ig
yeah i messed up my elf paladin a bit, so i raged quit and used a prebuilt character
Finding a group!
D&D games are organized privately, but many places facilitate finding a group. Here we have #find-a-game
ok but will the dm explain me how to play?
I would recommend trying to figure out how to make your own characters before thinking about joining a game
What did u mess up with it?
If the group is advertised for beginners, yeah. But I would definitely look at the rulebook as well before joining.
Having a very basic understanding is still better than no understanding at all.
just the constitution , its 8 , is it completely fine?
Con is the stat that says how much hp u have
I would recommend switching them around to make it higher but it's fully optional
i fixed it
i can play now ? DMs will help me right?
Usually it takes some time to find a group and organize sessions. There are some explanations in #find-a-game
So u will need to find a game
What deva said will help you find an online game through the server but u probably have a game shop near you witch might have a dnd game in it
Also I might not be able to use that exact character for the game
i know the basics now, i am fully sure i won’t find game shops where i live much less a dnd table here
im watching a beginner gameshow to know how i play
lol
Coming late but which one do you think is the hardest to start with? Is it wizard maybe?
Opinions vary (he said, unhelpfully).
You need to know the rules for spellcasting, and what your spells do. Get that down and you're laughing.
A fighter, monk or rogue has to be able to tactically analyse a battle at a glance to position and take the actions that will best benefit the team every round. That's a bit more of a skill to learn if you ask me.

Howdy.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Where do I read the rules lmao
There are quick links in the bot post
While the rules cover a lot, there are some things you don't necessarily need to engage with yet. Its also not a race to memorize, just to compartmentalize.
Less "rattle off what Burning says off the top of your head" and more "Know what Burning generally indicates and where the rule for it is"
In the link that says "Basic Rules"
dndbeyond.com has the Basic Rules on it!
My current character's sheet is on something not shareable here unfortunately.
There sure is, you can check out what abilities it grants in the Basic Rules.
Yes!
Mine is an Elf Barbarian who has magic constantly twisting around him for chaotic events.
It's a curse that is spreading in his home village that he is trying to find a cure for.
No tag races found in category new.
what kind of elf?
Wood Elf. He is very fast.
fair im half high elf half dark elf artificer artilerist
This is Loryax. This black dragonborn is a petty thief who thought the development of his sorcerous powers would be a boon, but just put him on the top of a wanted list. Since fleeing his hometown he's started to discover using his new abilities to help others can be rewarding.
mine is lockheed shartin an elven war criminal artificer
he loves fire and force based damage
rocking 18 int so his fire bolts really burn
im able to do 3 attacks in a single turn
Do they have names
Vi’hyathracn “Vi” Blightfang is a Green Dragonborn Swashbuckler Rogue with a Dex and Cha of 18 and an Int of 8 who wields a Rapier and believes in Tarot cards
Class is the first big thing to pick. Start here for some quick descriptions: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
@mellow mural artificers are goated and fun
My barbarian's name is Hadarai
Yes
Dwarf is one of the original four races along with Human, Elf, and Halfling
I pick barbarian I lik the fact it’s fist fighting
No, Monk is the one that does fist fighting
Barbarian does Rage
Barbarian isn't actually that great at fist fighting by default, yeah
lol my party just enslaved some gangster monks and brainwashed them
do you want weapon combat or magic
(or a little of both)
Nice
How’d you do the brainwashing? There aren’t many Enchantment spells RAW that last more than 24 hours
@timid locust they were like very evil and we are training them to be better people ( they will be sent to their deaths in our next big fight )
good old conditioning
my character was essentially in the high elf empire version of the cia during the 60s
Oh but it said melee I thought that was lie knives and stuff
so he knows a good amount about conditioning and ElfKultra
Can their be a dwarven monk ?
yeah classes arent race locked
Barbarians are great at using weapons. They're not the best at using fists.
Any race can be any class
Basic set DnD had elf as a class IIRC
@mellow mural some races may be more attuned to being certain classes however
like bugbears are good at stealth and can be better rogues
Dwarf Monk is a good combination
Con is important for every class and Hill Dwarf gets +1 Wis
Plus you can choose Drunken Master and be the stereotypical drunk Dwarf
Nooo my dwarven boy don’t drink he only drinks caribou milk
(We're defaulting to 2024, I believe. That's where the link in ?new points now.)
Is there a race or smth that can like talk to animals or has a very strong bond with any animal ?
Oh yeah whoops
Well in that case Dwarven Toughness is still good for Monks so it still applies
no Vergadain Firespirits for him then :p
I’m pretty sure Firbolg can talk to animals
there are spells that allow it and magic items
Anyone with access to the beast speech spell, rangers can get a subclass called beast master that gives them an animal companion, druids who wildshape into an animal form can probably communicate with other animals of that type.
Sure! If you want a pet that does something useful, you'll probably want the find familiar spell.

Huh, that didn't do what I thought it would...
i sort of do
artificers can summon our own for 100 gold
Yes, there are a couple sites that can do that
Can I have an owlbear as a pet v
I wouldn't count on it
yeah
Pretty sure no
Well, here's about playing online: #dnd-newcomers message
Wizards and Warlocks get Familiars, Beast Masters get a Beast, Drakewardens get a dragon, Battle Smiths get a robot
then again my party has a pet devil hound
Let's keep the recommendations and ideas to some simpler options, since this is the #dnd-newcomers channel.
Don't want to overwhelm a new player who hasn't even looked at the rules
fair
several subclasses get them RAW; there's also Find Familiar, Find Steed, and items like the Pot of Awakening
alternatively your DM might allow animal handling checks to entice a creature into being a pet
Yup, some people can summon their pets, but anybody can tame an animal over a long enough period of time. My party recently helped a Skeletal Warhorse and its now their mount
lol dude why does every party seem to find a skeleton horse
I'm in a game where we have a White Dragon Wyrmling due to several nature rolls made at 20+ by my druid >:3
its cool
because they're sick
Damn that’s cool
We don't even have someone that gets a pet from the Subclass, one of our warlocks just gathered a sample of a purple slime while we were fighting it and it grew in size and it is now our pet.
my parties barbarian has one but i think im cooler since i have 7 horses myself
HOW?
Seven?!
true, you can also buy things like muels and horses
not skeleton. but i purchased a war horse and then 6 draft horses for a super wagon i built
like 350gold if they're draft horses c:
I wish we had one. Anyone wanna trade a cool skeleton horse for a small purple slime (it's cute)
so yeah, like 700 gold
i was able to get discounts for helping build and repair stuff
plus i used the acid sale exploit
Where did you get 7 horses? I mean how?
About names what about the name ygg for a dwarf (Promounced yegg)
a town stable
a lawful purchase at a stable
Sure, sounds reasonable.
The one where you get Acid from an Alchemy Jug and sell it?
Fair enough
How would they even know it's pronounced yeg
I like it
Sounds like egg
they sell them in pretymuch any settlement larger than a village
im like the most lawful member of my party. ( because i found five platinum bars in a safe i robbed)
yeah 50 gold a day
you're talking to the author of the character
And you carry them all with you?
I mean their teammates
one's a mount and 6 are pulling a wagon from what they said]
i have six pulling a giant carraige i built and one is my personal mount/ warhorse
i have a warforged npc as my assitant that drives the wagon
I am now stealing that idea, thanks
I always make sure to buy a wagon <3
then a monk and fighter npcs as two laborers
i built one its gigantic
everyone always forgets the vehicle rules
it has almost every kind of crafting ability
Now, now folks, let's bring this back around on topic.
We've got #tales-from-the-table for stories and discussion about what's happening in your own games.
and a balista on top
Because my duder don’t speak a lot but only thing he says is his name
Exactly
is it possible to have other players in mt campaign use characters that i create? im teaching some people to play the game and id like to create some characters for them to control and test out. thing is, were playing online. im using roll20 for the maps and tokens, but im creating the characters and rolling on dnd beyond. is there anyway to hand over control of the characters to my friends?
It might be a tough sell to play a character who only says their name.
A quiet character who doesn't talk much is fine, but you need to be able to communicate with your party members even a little bit.
Ok ok but what if it’s like how groot is ?
Don’t do that
Communication is important
Speaking in third person is a good compromise
That's what I mean, I think most DMs would request that you don't do this.
Ok ok sorry
Yes. With d&d beyond you can create characters in your campaign and assign them to players when they join the campaign link.
Or alternatively, you make pre-filled character sheets and email or message folks the file to use for their character.
Typically we call those "pre-made" characters.
So… In character, you’re saying “I am Ygg?”, but out of character, you’re saying “Ygg asks where the castle is.”
Yeah
ah ok, ill do that then. thank you
I believe that could work, but it’d be better to speak in third person and actually be understood by both the other characters and the NPCs
I still definitely wouldn't recommend it as a new player, unless you're very familiar with all the other people at your table.
Finding a group is always the hardest part. After you've become acquainted with the rules, you can start your search here on this server though. We have a couple channels to help find groups.
Don't have anyone to play with yet. Get your bearings, you'll find a group.
you can also look for facebook groups in you area
So as a Monk, there are 4 Subclasses you can choose from in 2024
thats it?
There's 4 updated subclasses. All the other older ones are still valid options.
But that's a conversation for level 3.
How does one know the subclasses
on the website we shall not name i see 10
There's one available for free in the Basic Rules.
Every PHB class started with 4
I’m very confused icl rn
Each Subclass gives you certain powers
Uh huh
It's not something a new player usually has to worry about, which is why we try to keep things simple here
Do yu guys have dice ?
Sure do. And if you don't, you can use various online dice rollers.
I do I do
I have the in a little black tin
I wish I could show a picture of them bc they are quite cool
Mercy lets you heal yourself and others
Shadow lets you teleport and go invisible
Elements lets you control fire, water, earth, and air
And Open Hand lets you do more things when you punch people and heal yourself
I like open hand
Ok so correct me if I’m wrong please
So I can be a dwarf called ygg with a class of monk which also has a subclass for open hand ?
Yes exactly
Ok ok
Another question can mr ygg have like a special piece of armour or like a special eye that does smth
Monks can’t wear armor
Why…
By default, no. You don't start with any special items.
Your DM decides what items you find on the adventure.
Balance
Because they get Natural Armor
That means their Armor Class equals their Dexterity modifier plus their Wisdom modifier
You can get it up to 20
Monks are unarmored martial artists, they don't wear any armor and don't need to wield any weapons.
monks dont need armor anyway
Am I allowed to have like an eye which I’ve had since birth but it’s a special type of eye like elizebeth from 7ds
Armor shuts off a lot of monk's class features. They excel at being mobile and doing rapid fire martial arts stuff, but they're limited in what gear they can use.
As for having a "Special eye that does something," you can flavor some of the stuff you do in mostly any way you want, as long as you follow the rules for the class.
I don't know what that is, but your character can't start with any special abilities or items.
Only if your DM lets everyone start with a magic item
You only get what your species, background, and class grant you.
Ok what if it don’t do anything js looks cool
As fuh
And can gain powers but I don’t know that it can?
Why not
If it's just aesthetic, then your DM will probably say okay. But best to check with them.
As for gaining powers... I wouldn't count on it. As we said, you can't just gain abilities because you think it's cool. You're limited by your character options.
Talk with your DM
If they want to make Everyone gain powers, you should be fine
While true, let's be careful not to set any unrealistic expectations for new players
What your armor and gear looks like is up to you, as long as it doesn't grant you any mechanical benefits. You can just say you're wearing a cloak.
Is there like a clumsy thing
I'm not really sure what you mean by that
Like say for example my duder would js always fall over
I mean, you can say that your character is clumsy and you can roleplay that they are.
Ok ok
A low dex could represent clumsiness
Hii
Liek say for example my dudes cloak was a lil too big for him would he js fall over a lot

Thanks 😊
A clumsy monk that randomly falls over is certainly a choice
You can describe your character mostly however you want.
Wdymmmm certainly a choiceeee😥😢
Do be careful though that your character is not an annoyance or hindrance to other players though. You want to enjoyable to play with
lol i'm just giving you a hard time. Monks are usually very acrobatic and graceful. It comes naturally with a high dexterity score.
However, MOOSIC is playing a Monk and a bad Dex Monk is a bad idea
You can have a high Dexterity score and still be clumsy
If you want to win combat, you need to give Ygg a high Dex
I did join this Convo part way through so perhaps I should read the context
Drunken master monk!
And ye, don’t have low dexterity as a monk
I'd honestly write/flavor it as Ygg seeming like they're uncoordinated in their martial arts, but wooping ass.
Like Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Beebop, or a drunken master or something
That would be really funny and flavorful i think
Uesssss
How long does it take to find a group ?
It’s Pure luck
Im hella unlucky lmao
Just search around in #looking-for-players and maybe you’ll find someone
It usually takes anywhere from a day or two to a few weeks. The important thing is to cast a wide net
Okkk
So idk if this is the best place to ask but I put up a thing saying me and some friends were looking for a dm we got a message from one saying they were willing to dm for us but they are asking us to have custom character designs as a requirement for a campaign and are being quite pushy on getting us to commission it from them I'm starting to feel suspicious of this especially considering they aren't in the discord anymore is this a common scam or just weird?
It is a common scam
Alr ty for letting me know I'll sort this out now
Yes, this is almost certainly a scam. Good intuition to think it was fishy and reaching out.
thank you i figured it was good thing we also have an artist with us anyhow none of us were really willing to pay for that either
is there anywhere i should report the username to?
Report them to Discord but you can also come to #moderator-support and ask for a private thread. The moderation team can collect details of the scammer account and investigate from our end.
hey uhm im new to the dnd community and i dont know anything about this type of game but i just found the gameplay funny so i want to know how to play the game and how its organized to join a table mind clearing all that up ?
also im not english but i have a lot of vocabulary so dont mind
and... im also too lazy to read the entire channel of how to play lmao imma try anyway
Yeah metoo

Yes!!
Ty!
hello
ok i already got a question how do we create the character i mean i know we have to roleplay it but idk how to make one
d&d beyond
use it. it's an app
you can create a character in it and modify stats and all
we can only sign in with the google?
you don't wanna sign in with google?
i mean sign up
i understood you
i only have the choice between wizards apple and google
do which ever one suits you
yeass
Hi! So, I'm not really new to dnd, but I am to Dnd beyond website. Is there any way I can create an artificier? Because it doesn't appear in the class option :'))
hello. if you're asking me, i'm new to dnd :D
Welcome! Unfortunately, Artificer isn't one of the free classes. In order to access it on DnD Beyond, you'll need to purchase the associated book it's in.
Unfortunately Artificer is not included in the base rules. As such, if you want access to Artificer, you will need to by the expansion it is included in
In order to access the Artificer, you'll need to buy either Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. It is not a free class, unfortunately.
Oh, I understand, that's fair. Thanks!
Follow the step by step rules on how to create a character in the Basic Rules.
You can do this online either on a website like DnD Beyond or using a fillable PDF character sheet.
You can also print out a character sheet to do it with pen and paper.
luckily it's only like $20
not trapped in one of the anthologies that are like $50~70 when you literally only need one page of it for a single species q_q
I understand, I just asked because my DM prefers online character sheets. I'll probably do it by hand, but thanks for the help! Right now I don't really have access to those books but it's good to know
it seems really hard to create a character tbh
Class first.
Yeah, take it step by step.
Start here and pick what sounds fun:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Check your local library; they might have a copy you can borrow/reference
I checked; in my city, there aren't many DND related places, there's only one and not fully, although tomorrow I'll check if they have it. I wish I lived in a bigger place :'DD
ok my character is created what now?

and just to ask do we have to rest in the group until the end of the session or can we leave at anytime when needed
It's usually expected to be present for the entire session.
ok how long does a session last in general?
Depends on the DM, but I think it's safe to assume a normal session lasts somewhere between 2-4 hours.
i see well thanks i'll try to play whenever i can (and study those how to play thing)
I see on your profile that you're French. If you have any trouble reading the Basic Rules because it's English, there's a similar document in French that might help.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/FR_SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
Note that it's a little simpler, and doesn't contain all information that the Basic Rules do, but it might be useful.
TYSM i didnt wanted to ask because i thought it was entirely english
This shortened version, called the SRD, is the only free document in French, unfortunately
thats okay i still have a ton of vocabulary in english i can make it work just fine
just why does it but legal information and stuff like that?
It's technically a legal document that people can use to make their own DnD content if they want. Don't worry about it
ah alr i wont bother any longer i think you answered all the questions i had
ty for the help
Happy to help. Let us know if you have any other questions later
Do you guys know anyone who would draw up a character
You can probably find folks advertising in #dnd-advertisements .
If you're looking for a free way to represent your character, search up HeroForge or Picrew.
Heroforge okay okay
Hey guys, how easy is it to find a weekly/biweekly campaign here for me to join?
Picrew is about doing it by your self no ?
not too hard; check here and on r/lfg on reddit and you should have soemthign within like a week
Yup! Picrew is basically kind of like a videogame character creator type thing. Select different features, clothing, etc. You can find some good ones out there
Thanks
Okkk
I dont know anything, basically, of the world my character is from. She is a Ghostwise Halfling from Deepingwanderer in the Underburrow . I want her to be addicted to bioluminescent mushrooms bit I have a few questions 1) can she access those from where she lives 2) is there a problem if they dont have addictive properties canonically 3) can I carry an inventory of them with me when ai leave on my adventure, even if they are not something listed as equipment
- Assuming it is an official setting your character is from, ask in #dnd-lore
- Especially as a new player, I would not have addiction as a gameplay mechanic in any way (that would also require getting the dm involved)
- As long as you coordinate with your DM, your inventory can be flexible
I myself am not familiar with any of the terms you mentioned
Except halfing
It seems to be Sword Coast, which is indeed an official setting
Hey, for someone interested in learning and getting into dnd should I buy, look up, or need anything to know before getting into a campaign?
highly recommend checking out #learn-to-play
it'll give a lot of answers to your questions
Ok thank you I appreciate it
here's everything you need distilled down into two paragraphs as the learn to play channel can get a bit into the weeds:
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers or check out the resources in #learn-to-play ; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Ok thanks this helps a lot
What is the 5.5e? I've seen that a couple times.
It's the 2024 rules update.
more a colloquial name for it, and also a bit misleading cause it indicates it's a new edition, when it's really more akin to a remaster
it's still 5e
WotC did officially back 5.5e as the name
Over 5e 2024 or other variations
And personally, I think they're different enough that the distinction does matter
So 5.5e is the most recent update? And 5e is the 5th edition of the game?
yerp
think of it as 5e being short for "5th edition," and then 5.5e to indicate that the edition has had some change, but not enough to make it entierly new edition, such as calling it 6e
is there a way to restrict while building or test against restrictive rules set by AL a character created in DDB or another official online client?
Im new
Hi
I dont know anythinh
Can someone help me understand the rules of the game?
DnD beyond has all of the basic rules for free but the short is D&D is kind of like improve but the dice determine your next prompt mixed with a video game aspect of combat.

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Not really. You can turn off some sources, but it's harder than you'd think
Especially since I think the "first source only" rule is still in effect with DDB coding. So you may have to leave Ravnica on to get things reprinted in Tasha's to show up, etc
Plasmoid isn't a free option, so you have to own that book or be shared with someone who does
oh that sounds awful why?
all I'm looking at is duplicates, like two noble backgrounds etc, if I have 2014 and 2024 selected
but if they're both tagged 2014, it doesn't work?
actually whoever made those poor decisions is paid more than I am so what do I know about UX or programming my majors
A few reasons. first, DDB coding has long been a spaghetti mess beneath the surface
D&D is one multiverse with Magic and this confirms it
And there was a time when AL rules changed roughly once a year, so it probably wasn't worth it back then. Now the code is just too much nonsense 😅
Even outside of AL, there are parts of D&D rules that have never been coded or worked properly in DDB
There was an announcement a bit ago about maybe fixing that, but I'll believe it when I see it
even more than custom backgrounds?
what do i do if im brand new
Until then, I'll get to keep reminding people that boomerangs aren't real
And yes, even more than that
(For example, legacy blessings/boons and the Dragon Wrath weapons iirc)
Im not sure if this is possible stat wise but im probably gonna make a fighter monk that has a bunch of dexterity
Im new tho

Will you be running a pre written module or homebrew?
homebrew
I know this sounds stupid buts whats a hombres is it like a custom story?
yes its just anything custom

What is a Dungeon Master?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
How does it work?
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
Where do I start?
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Dang I can’t remember the other command which would be more helpful. Lol
They really need a master list. I can only remember about 3 of them offhand 😅
Maybe...

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
That's the one
But yeah, 'breathe, have fun, I recommend water and/or cough drops, it's fine if you don't know everything'
And it's also okay to say no
Yes that’s the one
Can a character have like vision where they see into the future ?
With 100% accuracy
Not by the rules, no
Fah
Also, that would be incredibly broken
What bout full counter ?
I don't know what you mean by that
An enemy throws a magical attack and the player does full counter and full counters the attack
That's also not a thing in the rules
There are various ways to mitigate an attack, but it depends on the features and none really work like that
Foresight is a 9th level spell that approximates this with advantage on rolls
but that's about it
Counterspell is a spell, but only works on other spells and they have a chance of still casting. Monks can mitigate damage, but it's not automatically everything. There are various other features that let you reduce damage or hurt someone back, but nothing you can do every time you get attacked since you only get 1 reaction a round
I'm also still not sure what exactly you mean by full counter. Do you just mean no damage?
I think the mean a full encounter / battle
- Absorb Elements: gives you resistance to the damage type before taking it as a areaction (assuming an elemental type)
- Backlash lets you reduce the damage taken as a reaction
No no I mean say for example I have a dagger and someone cast fireball I could full counter it and will do 0 damage to me and if it hits the person whom cast it it hits them
monk can somewhat do this
but otherwise, no
Monk has an ability where they can deflect attack damage if it's at least partially a physical damage type (later any damage type)
if your roll fully blocks the damage, you can send the damage to another creature in range of the monk ability
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level3DeflectAttacks
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level13DeflectEnergy
Monks (though that only works on attacks, not fireball) and maybe the Backlash spell are the closest I can think of. Most other features either let you mitigate damage or hurt the person back, but not both. And you can still only do them once per round.
I see
Sorry weird question but can I see your dice
Uh, no?
Oh
It's not like I have a picture of them on hand anyway
I agree with Mitcho, but honestly the best way to not making it boring for the players is to ask them what they find fun and put that into the game. People like different things, so if you know what those are, you can take advantage of that knowledge. If they're new and they don't know, try throwing a variety of things at them and pay close attention to what they respond to. Ask for feedback at the end and try to learn from that for next time!

hey!! i couldnt post on the dnd subreddit because im not active enough on reddit to have enough karma ;-; so i figured i'd ask my question here
im a very experienced pathfinder 1e player and this is my second time building anything in 5e or 5.5e. Im trying to make a character that is effectively a hybrid of human/nightmare dragon lineage.
Using the 2024 rules, the current vague build idea is warlock 2/shadow magic sorcery 18, but i cant decide where the level split should be. Warlock 3 would give me some amazing subclass features, warlock 4 gives me a feat, warlock 5 gives me 3rd level spells on a short rest!
Im pretty sold on shadow magic instead of draconic, and if i took 3 or more in warlock i would choose the great old one because it fits the flavour the most by a long shot (the ability to make spells deal psychic damage is the whole vibe!)
invocations i'd take would probably be pact of the tome, agonising blast and misty visions. Wouldnt need devils sight because of the shadow sorcerers level 3 ability (i like that its not ALL magical darkness too because it lets the DM keep shadows as a narrative thing to emphasize environment and the unknown)
the characters vibe is supposed to be relatively incapable but full of powerful magic that she learns and grows to use better, lots of shadows and lots of fear. Im not super sure where to split this and coming from a pf1e background i feel ive been overthinking this far too much
I’d take the warlock level after you get level 3 spells, so after level 5
Also for future reference #character-discussion is the best channel for this
oh thank you i didnt see that!! should i move my message to there?:)
Sure! Though, you might wanna shorten it a lil bit :D. people don’t love text walls
noted lmfao
Yeah, #character-discussion or even #optimization if you want the extreme number crunchers
What are saving throws used for
Is there a spell that requires the caster to make a saving throw directly
To resist the full effect of something
Only ones I know is if you target yourself, hit yourself with an AOE, or need to maintain concentration
Ye
hello people im very fresh and new to dnd and im not sure where to start any tips?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion
okay thank you!
I'm a newbie and I'm starting with character creation with my player's handbook.
i’m trying to create a new character but the campaign i’m in starts at level 3 so i’m rlly lost
You still go about creating a character and the DM tells you what level you start at.
How to create a character- first start by picking a class and a subclass.
You need a player's handbook - you can find one on the DnD Beyond website:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes?srsltid=AfmBOopdWGxFBtxCDEJ9KuP9fi2UR8d_PcqgFJ5_KtzWgIkf0190wpg_
You can actually start for free with just the Basic Rules!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
As for starting at higher levels, you would basically just make a level 1 character and then go through the process of leveling them up to the campaigns starting level. See here for the specific rules on how leveling up works:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
ty for the sources you guys!
i have a physical copy so i’m sorting through the pages rn
yo
right can somebody help. I'm trying to join games and can't cos i dont have a picture of my character. I can't use AI, I can't draw and i don't really have the financial luxury to pay an artist. What images am i allowed to use so i can actually play?
There’s heroforge maybe
If people are telling you to pay for art in order to be part of a campaign, that's a common scam in the community, unfortunately.
If that's not the case, you can grab art for private token purposes from the likes of Reddit, Google Images, and other art websites.
yeah i've had somebody offer to draw my character for a fee
Also remember that character art is optional- it’s not a requirement for playing D&D. Any group requiring art should be able to explain why and you can decide if that’s the right group for you.
What's the difference between Pathfinder and forgotten realms
Okay cuz I was playing a game in forgotten realms but I guess I'm moving over to Pathfinder
You could certainly apply the rules of Pathfinder to the Forgotten Realms setting, though I imagine there'd be some friction. Something your DM alone would be able to clarify for you!
Comparing apples to oranges
I prefer Pathfinder’s setting
You're comparing a system to a setting. An car engine vs the paint. The default setting for Pathfinder is Golarian. The default setting for DnD is the Forgotten Realms
I feel bad for leaving my dnd group still, even though life and mental health happened to me. I dont know how to not feel guilty.
It's natural. Especially if you really liked the people. You did what you had to and I'm sure they understand. It'll take some time.
yeah the dm understood i suppose, one thing that made me leave is when we met online would be inconstant due to others life's.
Now i feel like i either want to make custom content for dnd or paint minis, but im unsure because ive never done either.
D&D Beyond has a ton of images you could use built in.
do any of you guys use mini figures? is it worth it to use minis?
Im debating on getting some sometime as a hobby to paint. Im just not sure where to browse minis at online and not pay a crazy amount?
If you play in person, it's nice to have to minis for player characters at least
But it's not required
I Haven't played dnd in a hot minute, but ive been told painting minis is a good hobby. I alteast want to try it.
#dnd-minis may have some ideas?
always worth dipping your toes into a new hobby in a cost efficient way at first to see if you enjoy it. and if you decide you don’t atleast you tried and have a cool mini with a story to display… yk?🤷🏻♂️
Helloo
Welcome to the server!
Thank you!!!
Let us know if u have any questions
Just what I was typing!
wait, D&D is turning into a service? i can't wrap my head around how that would even work.
i think i may have misunderstood some stuff i've read
No idea what you might be talking about, so potentially
Things like D&D Beyond do have subscriptions you can pay for, but that's not D&D in general
what is the best way to get into a campaign or get a group? i’m new to dnd and want a fun experience with leniency to my noobness lol.
I low-key joined cus I want to find a campaign XD my last one never went anywhere sadly

oh awesome thanks!
I wish I could play irl but sadly there's like no nerds who are into dnd where I am that I know of.. lol 💔
I am not new to DnD I have only really played with my friends as their forever DM and since they dont want to try to DM I kinda need to branch online. So I am entirely new to DnD as a community and the online space. should I bother buying books on DnD beyond that are not 5.5 for like subclass unlocks or do people usually just stick with the new versions moving forward? I dont really know what other DM's are like or how they do things.
I'd look at the free rules and decide which makes the most sense for you but realistically 5.5 is just like a polished up version of 5.0:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014 (5.0 basic rules)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 (5.5 basic rules)
But 5.5 is where D&D is and will be continuing to go so expect any future releases to be based on that
Real😔 Bro WHO in europe (except for like england ig) plays dnd.. well, my english teacher. But I can’t play with him, can I?
Anyway, I’m lowkey scared to put myself out there and look for games cause there’s already 20 people asking on the posts.. And the fact I’m a VERY new player who knows like 1.5 rules and learns by playing and not reading the rules.. doesn’t help much.
which country r u from? :)
Poland. Bruh the worst location to be a dnd player possible
aw man, i feel u im in bulgaria..
I suggest you post what you are looking for so DM's can see what times and stuf you are looking for. Also check faceboook groups and reddit
Yea.. also the timezones lowkey suck, finally found a dm who’s willing to take me and bro is 7 hours behind me.. 😭
Unfortantely I think a HIGH percentage of DMs are from America. The other option is to become the DM and post that you are a new DM looking for new players in your timezone....
That can be things like Voice Chat, Play By Post (where you type out the story with the DM and other players one post at a time), Many people put what VTT's (virtual table tops) they are familiar with, if any. It could include things like no camera, or yes pleas I love being on camera LOL
Tyy
looks like a great posting. concise info without being so picky you constrain yourself too much
Hmmm.. yea I lowkey might try getting into dming cause I really enjoy the roleplaying part of dnd and describing stuff in great detail:)
I sense a DM in you then 🙂
ELI5: hit points vs hit point di[c]e
Am I correct that if my Hit poit die = D8 per level and I am a level 1 that I roll a d8 one time and then write that number in MAX under the HIT DICE space on my sheet?
And then I add my charisma to that number for my HP?
Yes EXCEPT at level 1 you get the max automatically. each level after that, you roll that die once and add that. An close, but you ad Constitution, not Charisma
So at level 1 I start with 8 automatically and then level two I add my d8 roll
correct plus your constitution at each level
I feel like my brain is going to melt before I even get to start playing this game lol
ehhh just take it one step at a time. are u using a book or d&d beyond's site?
Book
got ya.
And google

Is it possible to get uk dms ?
Hello, I'm new to this server (but not D&D). I tried to make my own d&d edition based on my card game, can someone use the player guide to make a character? I need to see if my rules are unbalanced
file:///C:/Users/liama/OneDrive/Documents/Chaos%201e%20(d&d%20campaign)/Chaos%201e%20player%20sheets.pdf
file:///C:/Users/liama/OneDrive/Documents/Chaos%201e%20(d&d%20campaign)/Chaos%201e%20player%20guide.pdf
youve just linked the files on your computer. you ened to properly post them to discord. usually just dragging and dropping works
alternatively, if theyre too big, you can use google drive
You've just copied the file path on your computer, that doesn't show anyone anything.
Also, homebrew is more appropriate in the #homebrew channel, whereas this channel is more focused on helping introduce newcomers to D&D as it is without too much in terms of zany extra supplements, or homebrew rules.
Hey is it possible to play dnd with three ppl including the dm ?
You can play with 1 player and 1 dm (technically can play with just 1 dm but at that point prolly just better to write a book)
But yes you can
Personal preference leads me towards having a minimum of 3 and max of 5 though
Ok bc I’ve got the massive glass table in my kitchen and I thought it would be fun to play with my mum and gf
Nice, just make sure to figure out how balanced your encounters are if youre the dm (im assuming there may be a lack of experience based off of your prior question)
Most modules are balanced with 4-5 players in mind so theres a large power difference between 2 players and 4 players
Lowk have no clue how to do anything first time doing dnd and dm
just half the amount of creatures in any given fight and you'll be fine 👍
I would love to like have a game but it’s always so late for me bc I live in uk and all the games are in merica
Be patient, there are a few games posted for UK timezones, also cast a wide net.
Check out other servers and forums to find a game
you can use #looking-for-players to, well, look for players
you can also make listings on D&Dbeyond, as well as basically any vtt
Is there other servers ?
Yes
most of previously mentioned have their own servers
you can actually and accurately find things on Temu? like, that's a thing that is possible?
anyways, as far as dice go, make sure they are easy and quick to read, even in low light. higher quality (not necessarily more expensive) ones are more balanced, and therefore more random. keep in mind that metal ones can and likely will dent tables.
a dice tray or tower (or even dice cup) can go a long way to keep dice from flying onto the floor or taking out minis on a map.
and a real d100 will roll for a stupid amount of time.

Hi I am under 18 do yall know if there is a channel fo finding a group for that
Because I've yet to find 1
There isn't one as far as I know. Games for minors are often either through in-person venues (libraries, schools, etc.) or via paid services, if you can't wrangle a group among friends/family.
Right, I get that. Servers for younger folks just tend not to be public.
For finding a game that’s all under 18?
Well that allow people under 18
Make a post in #looking-for-dm and reply to posts in #looking-for-players that don’t say they have an age restriction
The channels themselves here don’t discriminate on age, but DM’s may have preferences at their tables
Oh ok
That said, it's not unusual for a DM to not want minors at the table. It doesn't hurt to ask.
Ok
Mhm, better to get it out the way early
Thanks
Good luck!
hi
hello. let us know if you have any questions
ok
i do aactually
Im making a character for a campaign and I need some help making a backstory
#character-discussion is a great channel to ask in for that
thanks
I played my first game one shit last night!!! I had an AMAZING time, is there anyway on D&D Beyond for people to share books, I was making a my character and a lot of everything I needed was on different books I had to buy
If you are in a game that has content sharing on, you’ll have free access to what ever t they have
your DM makes a campaign on DDB, all your characters join. If any single person in the campaign has a subcription to DDB, they can turn on content sharing. then, all books owned by anyone in the campaign get shared to all
Question, is it possible to go solo on a campaign? And if so, how much different would it be compared to the traditional way?
It really is not possible with the base system as it was not built for that at all. There are people who have written ways to make it work, you'd have to google for that
Okay so I was curious because Im writing a DnD/BG fic but I thought it be fun if I based some of the events in the story off a actual campaign or something. Thank you again for answer!
Basically playing solo would be like writing a book lol, so i guess you are on the way.
Like Mitcho said, the game isn't really designed for solo play (assuming you mean you as player/DM), but folks have made workarounds. It's very different since you're both the player participating in the story but you also have the DM's perspective. Tables and dice rolls keep things from being fully within your knowledge, of course, but still, it can make for an interesting experience. Ginny Di's videos on solo play (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2nVilB8QeY and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54rIrWDjMKY) might give you good food for thought!
Thank you! These have definitely given me food for thought. I'll see if I can find any of those books at my library
wait is it suggested to play my first eve dnd game solo or with ppl who knows how to play
Play with people! It’s okay if everyone is new too
ok thanks
can someone look at my first character and give me tips
i'd be glad to. message me the link
ok

have you guys checked out the basic info in the bot
thats good 🙂
Can I just freestyle?
No, DnD, and TTRPGs in general, have rules and systems in place to make it an actual game that's meant to help keep it fun aand understandable
Hihi :)) sorry I'm kinda new to DND and I have a party already, but I would like to ask if it's okay to even join another campaign as well?
I know someone in 5 campaigns, if you think you can handle it go ahead
Alright tysm! I'll keep an eye out for any new games :3
I run 6 and play in 1. I have 2 players in 2 of my 6 and one of those runs 2 and is also in the one i play in. So yes it is possible, 🙂
Okay!! And people can host online DND sessions too I believe yes?
MIne are all in online. my one in person one died out a few months ago
Hi! Im new to DnD, I know a bit, like a little bit, mostly from yt and from baldurs gate if it counts too. I already made my first character, but I wanted to ask here if any DM would like to take new players into his/her campaign and help/guide me if I would do anything wrong and correct me. I know its not a channel for that, but I guess it would be easier than to jump to someones campaign, not knowing if that person wants someone with experience.
It’s a hard ask, with a LOT more DM’s than players. I used to do the same…
May I DM you?
ofc! Im happy that you agreed to that, for a moment I thought its gonna be harder

Hello, I am new here and I just started working on my D&D Character right now and I do have a bag of dice and the only sessions I have been attending are the ones held on my College Campus
heyaa I'm new here and still kinda new to dnd, I do have a character and character lore already, I'm in a dnd club and I have an dice set (don't know if that even matters since this isn't in person 😭)
hello im new to dnd i want to play a game with me and my friends but we need a dm how do I use Monodrone to find a dm?
I just started with this and I want to know how to create my character. With this I mean the statistics I have to use and how do I define them. Can anyone help me?
Type in /looking-for dm
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
thank you very much
thank you
Guys i am also new to D&D and i created my character and learned some important rules for this game. So can you pls tell me where i can play this game online?
you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
What should i do if im an introvert? How do i start socializing with community of D&D?
one of the neat things about D&D is that you are not playing you. you are playing some medieval fantasy person, or rather, you are guiding them and advocating for them. you yourself face no danger, face no risk. its all numbers and words on a piece of paper.
the degree of separation really helps with the introverted thing.
Hang out, join in. Check the #channel-guide for interesting places to chat. Say nice things about folk and their ideas. No rush, go at your own pace.
there's also the Altrole discord server if you think you need some free scheduled lessons on how to play or how to run D&D. sometimes competence is a real confidence booster when it comes to interacting.
Hi, I wanted to ask if reusing characters is a bad or anything, is it looked down upon or is it preferred to make a new one for every campaign?
its better to rebuild a character based on a previous one. that way its more likely to fit with the game.
You can reuse a character concept, but you wouldn’t, for example, retain the neat magic items from a prior game—not typically, anyway. Plus, in an imagination game of so many options, it can seem a bit odd to make the same choices each time. But play your bliss!
for instance, i had an orc that died in a game. in a new game years later i needed a character quickly, so i more or less copied what i had for the other character as far as personality and theme went. i re-rolled stats for the new game, and because the setting and world around that character were different, i tailored the character around that instead of the previous world they lived in. think of them like a multiverse variant of the first. different memories, different history, but pretty much the same thing.
Ditto what Parrot said: even if you reuse, you should adapt to the game/setting presented. Rolling up with a character that was built independent of fellow players or knowledge of the specific campaign/setting can be cause for concern, but nothing communication can’t solve!
Some people just play the same character every time, play how you want to as long as its respectful to everyone
I reuse characters all the time lol. Just make sure you understand that they will not turn out the same each time, you likely won't get the same cool items, your story won't be the same. Make sure to tweak them as much as needed per DM so they can fit within each world
Is there an article, or common knowledge of top level guidance on building your spell list? Everything I've found are lists of which spells to take but not how the list works together.
For instance, I'm playing a Wild Magic Sorcerer Blaster at lvl 3. My baseline theory is "Front load my highest spells with damage, AOE, and control spells. Use the lower levels for non battle spells, save 1 spell on each level for damage for when I run out of higher spell slots". But I don't know if this is a good plan.
Sounds legit. You want a big stick to hit with, add an AOE when you can, some defence, some utility. What priorities you put on those are up to you and the table expectations.

Thats totally fine 100%
If someone from my lineage becomes a warlock by making a pact with any creature or thing, And if they pass this magical power on to his grandchilds etc. , does that make me a sorcerer or a warlock?
Warlock. If you're getting your powers loaned to you by someone else, that's warlock
Sorcerer would be an average superhero getting their powers for the first time. maybe they're born with it or got it in a freak accident
oooh thank youuu

Couple questions for a noob DM. Scenario: 3 of my players are looking down toward a small bandit camp 100ft away. They want to try sneaking one player, the Rogue, very close. The two Wizards want to stay back and watch/cover him.
-
If the Rogue gets close and is spotted or initiates combat, do the Wizards still have Surprise on the bandits if they attack from out of combat?
-
If so, how do the Wizards land in Initiative order?
Thanks
If the rogue initiates combat, the DM could reasonably rule the bandits as surprised, but if the rogue is noticed, there is likely no surprise at all.
The wizards roll inititative as normal regardless, but if they haven't been noticed, they are hidden from the bandits until they do something that reveals them
I’m new to any type of dnd could someone help me
This server primary focuses on the fifth edition of the game (including 5 and 5.5)
You can check the bot posts above, one of them has a Quick Links section, I recommend you check the basic rules link.
find a local in person group that about the same age as u, bring a friend if u can
I don’t really know any place to find a group I struggle with social stuff
i always suggest this because it's the easiest way to learn
Oh ok
otherwise this server is nice, but playing is always the best way to learn it
Low-key, I haven't played DnD in 3-4 years, I'm just tryna find a chill group to vibe with. I don't understand half of this homebew stuff, tbh
I’ve just always wanted to get into d&d but I just could never really do anything till now
Homebrew is basically just, community made content. Imagine homebrew like "Mods", compared to the "Base game and DLC expansions".
I don't really play games like that, but I think I get it
homebrew is hard because u need to balance, make it fun for everyone, and have it to be interesting to the campaign
So after I have read all the rules and stuff what do I do after
this discord is purely for chatting and asking questions. if youre looking for games those are done off server but you can check #find-a-game to see who else is looking for games
I’m struggling to figure it out could you help
Sure! what exactly is confusing you
So when I click on the find a game tag
It takes me to the thing but I don’t know what to do after
If you wanna be a player, type /looking-for dm and fill in that form. Then look around in #looking-for-players and respond to posts
#looking-for-community also works but there also #paid-looking-for-game (not recommended)
I don’t see a form when I click it
When I click looking for dm
Yup, you gotta type in /looking-for dm
don't do that yet, just go to #looking-for-players and look around
It’s a command. And I’d do that first (making a form)
So I click k the tag then do I type in the command?
#find-a-game explains how
To submit a post of your own, click /looking-for dm, then send the message by itself. You’ll be given a private form to provide the details of your post.
this
Ok thanks
I’ve never played dnd before but I would love to try it how do I start?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Thank you!
Hey so a few people have messaged me about joining a campaign to teach me how to play but they want me to pay for their artist to draw my character I assume this is a scam yes?
Yep. Block and/or report as necessary.
Ok thought so when I got the same text from two different accounts
Thank you for the heads up
Hi
yo
basically anything where they want you to download anything or pay for anything. really look deep into it and take it with a grain of salt
Hmm ok thank you
most VTTs are a webpage you can go to. and you can search for them via google instead of clicking on anyone's links
Ok great thank you
I’m a little disappointed I thought I found people to help me learn but oh well that’s how it is I guess
however, there are pay to play games. but they'll be completely upfront about that. i think there's a specific channel people have advertised them. they won't just randomly private message people.
there's the Altrole discord, they have like actual free scheduled classes covering specific things in regards to tabletop rpgs. playing or running or designing. but they don't host any games there
Ditto D&D Newbie Sessions.
Ok thanks I’ll check it out
Anyone free later after 6:15 EST if they are doing a group DnD session I never played with a group before would love to get into it
I'm new to this server too
Games aren't organized in the discussion channels! You can post in #looking-for-dm by following #find-a-game's instructions or reply to ads in #looking-for-players.
never heard of that one, but i'm checking it out. there's always room for more places i can suggest for new people.
Hello, everyone! I have a question as a first-time DM! I am attempting to run our campaign on DND Beyond purely and I purchased the Adventure book and stuff for DOSWI (Dragons) but DND Beyond doesn't allow you to simply select that pre-made campaign like you can with Frozen Sick and the other free ones. How can I run the campaign? Do i need to utilize another webstie and copy and paste info into it? What would you suggest?
I don't run campaigns in D&D Beyond, but could you explain what it is you're trying to do exactly?
So, I want to run the beginner campaign Dragons of Stormwreck Isle online with my discord server, but when I purchased the full adventure book, i can't directly use it as a pre-made campaign like I can with the three free ones in the "Pre-made Campaign" section
I want to be able to run VTT maps with my whole party via dnd beyond
oh. you mean in maps? i thought Stormwreck had been set up for that already. i am likely mistaken.
I wonder if you need a Master Tier subscription to use Maps for purchased content (as opposed to free stuff). I would check in with #ddb-support and see if they can't provide better technical help!
i can do it in maps. sorry if my question is confusing ive never run a game before
it's more just like the fact that I can't have it be a pre-made campaign like the others
does that not effect the campaign for the group very much?
I don't see why it would, but again, I don't use the platform to run games. I've only used it for character sheet management.
sorry again i got dubbed the DM because i freaking watch DND videos and that means i have experience to everyone i guess and ive been like watching tutorials and stuff for the past two weeks
i'm still learning so i appreciate the help even if my question was confusing and unclear
it just happens. no biggie, everyone has a first time running things.
then, I have one more question that is much less confusing if that's okay
Fire away. That's the point of the channel.
do yall have any recs for running a campaign via discord and like online? I am having everyone make characters via beyond and i am going to run maps on there too and i have a music bot and a seperate server for the campaign. just any general recs or websites that might make things easier or anything like that?
or maybe beyond isn't the best option?
For characters, Beyond is good, assuming you have access to content on there digitally OR your group doesn't know the game well enough so having buttons to press will smooth things out for them. There are a tons of online platforms you can use, but honestly it just depends on your needs. I'm pretty low-tech when I run: Discord for communication and art assets, Owlbear Rodeo for VTT, no music (I don't need one more thing to juggle), online dice roller, Google Docs/Microsoft Word for notes. Maybe DDBeyond for statblocks, depending on what I need.
Ahhh I gotcha that sounds kind of like what ive already got set up. Ive meever heard of Owlbesr Rodeo though so thanks for that. What do you like about that website?
It's free and straightforward. Lots of VTTs have bells and whistles that I don't need. I don't want to spend more time on navigating tech issues than actual prep.
test the whole music thing before you get up and running in session. you want to make sure it doesn't overwhelm the audio
there's also the deal with push to talk vs voice detection. if they're using a headset, the voice detection should be fine (it might need to be adjusted a bit). if they are not using a headset, the music and other people's voices will trigger them. so unless they have a headset, they should strictly use push to talk.
oooh yeah that makes sense. i didn't think of that
all great tips thank you guys ill check out Owlbear Rodeo
have a good day!
Good luck and happy adventuring!
good luck. make mistakes. have fun
Hello im medium-new to dnd, i beat BG3 and i got Lost mine of phandelver last month and ive been playing it solo (no local dnd groups)
I need help whit information, what books do i need to get to understand whats going on?
I hope theres like a giant book of classes and spells and a giant book about monsters cause i hate switching to the back of the book to read monster stats xD
You can read the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), which has a good chunk of the material from the core books (the Player's Handbook, the Monster Manual, and the Dungeon Master's Guide). There aren't as many player options in the free rules as the PHB, nor as many monsters as in the MM. But you can get a lot of mileage out of the free content before investing more money into the hobby.
How much are the book?
Cash isnt rly a problem i can easily buy them over a span of few month
The core books are about $150 US for all three physically, $90 for digital. Or both at a discount. See https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/search?q=core
Small caveat: Lost Mine was created for 2014/5e, as opposed to 2024/5.5e I linked above. There are enough differences that it's worth deciding if you want to play the latest version of the rules or not.
Jes*s thats great to know :D
It will take me a month to save enough cash but this is great news :D
Ps. I have a problem reading online, the info enters 1 ear and leaves the other quickly
I better get used to the 5e rules first and the lost mines has basicaly jack on the rules and similar
But ill move to 5.5 once i get the books
hey all, wondering if anyone who has played the game for a decent length of time would be up for helping a friend and I learn and possible play with us at some point, we are relatively new and will likely ask a lot of questions, thanks!

for context we're trying to use D and D beyond which we are fairly new to, although i have played a LOT of Baldurs Gate 3 if that helps
Just be aware that stuff in BG3 is different to actual DnD for 2 reasons
- Some stuff was adapted to make BG3 gameplay smoother
- BG3 is based of 5e and the current edition which is what the free rules are on is 5.5e so there are also rule differences there.
Hey everyone I’m new to dnd and was looking at getting a starter set for me and my buddies who are all new any recommendations please
The Heroes of the Borderlands set!
Thank you
I like that starter set but they want to make their own character what would be a good set then ?
I believe all the starter sets come with pregen characters and omit the character creation rules, but those are freely available (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character).
They would not, unfortunately, have as many options as are in the Player's Handbook.
How good is the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
I've heard it's very good, if short. Haven't played or run it myself.
Oh okay thank you so much for your help
Sure thing. Happy adventuring!
personally, i slap together Peril in Pinebrook, which leads into Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, which leads into Lost Mine of Phandelver, which leads into In Volo's Wake, which leads into Dragon of Icespire Peak, which leads into Storm Lord's Wrath, which leads into Sleeping Dragon's Wake, which leads into Divine Contention, then into the second half of Phandelver and Below: the Shattered Obelisk, and if i feel particularly generous and want to show how Phandalin ended up after all this, I'll run Penny Arcade: Orrery of the Wanderer as an encore.
Of course, i need to adjust like all sorts of stuff to make sure that its all somewhat balanced and whatnot.
i've yet to do this, though. last time just doing LMoP and DoIP with a couple of detours thrown in sorta fizzled out once it got to the start of Storm Lord's Wrath about a year and a half into it.
welcome
Why’s up guys
makin pasta, yo
Howdy everyone, let us know if you have any questions
lowkey everything is a big question for me xD
Perhaps #learn-to-play and the free basic rules can help? (fere rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
Feel free to ask specific questions
cheers, that'll help
hey, i'm in my very first DnD campaign and i half way through session 1 a party member found a dagger and i bought it from them then letter on at a tavern right before the session ended i found out it was a magic item can someone explain attunement to me?
Basically some magical items require it. It is like bonding the magical aspect to the user, usually adding extra abilities, or just opening the abilities of the item to the user in general. The character must spend at least an hour touching / using it to declare they are attuned. MOST DM's probably hand wave that and dont roleplay it out
is there a subclass or a guideline that allows me to customize a companion?
Customise in what sense?
Sidekick rules, in Tasha's I think.
like, any form of choice
ik beastmaster 2024 gets to choose land sky or sea, but is there more choices? or is that it
ok thank you
Aside from sidekick rules, Beastmaster, artillerist artificer and the Find Familiar spell is the most I believe. At least off the top of my head.
i'll look into those rn
And Pact of the Chain, for warlocks.
I was hoping to play a character like walter from don't starve together
sidekick rules from Tasha's (or the smaller version in the Essentials Kit rulebook) allow you to add a sidekick template to any creature of a specific CR level
sidekick rules allows them to level up with the party
I wanted to be a skeleton race, child, (so either a reborn, or a war forged reskinned as a skeleton for flavor)
yada yada some lore about why i'm a skeleton probably
i would've also used a sling (shot) because that fit the kid aspect
and then I was thinking like, okay so what is this character mechanically?
they are not tanky or strong
i don't mind them casting spells but i'm not envisioning a nuke caster,
this is probably a support / utility character.
then i was thinking bard
but i didn't really vibe with the subclass options (and maybe I missed something)
I also thought warlock maybe? like i accidentally made a pact, a little stranger danger trope i wandered where I shouldn't have, became a skeleton, but again i couldn't pick any of the subclasses (again lmk if i missed something.)
I liked divine sorcerer until the whole getting wings thing, and then i was like ehh that's not the vibe of my lil skelly guy
then i was like okay, maybe he can have a pet compaion, that would fit the kid thing too, after becoming a skeleton i somehow found a protector, which i wanted to do some customization and make it an angler frog, frog body, angler fish head.
so i was heavily leaning beastmaster at this point, i can cast some support / utility, use my little slingshot, and i'll have this protector, but I just can't figure out how to make this protector with beastmaster rules.
sorry, long post but ya that's my lil thought process.
you'd need to talk with any GM about having your own sidekick. it does mechanically alter balance.
you could re-skin an existing creature to just look like an angler frog
once again, getting GM approval for all this
just remember that re-skinning something is fluff. mechanically it can only do what the thing you re-skinned can do.
like, i could re-skin a panther as one with majestic wings. doesn't mean it can fly or do anything with the wings.
The Ranger in my one campaign has reskined her beast as a baby death worm, but still fully functions Primal Companion - Beast of the Land.
How does it go with scammers on here ?? Are there a bunch
Okay because I have one person who wanted me to add this dm but now they are saying that the campaign is free but I have to pay their artist to create the illustration of my character
Like I can’t do it myself basically
That's a scam.
Please report it to Discord
(free game but all of a sudden they say you have to pay their artist for character art - typical bait and switch)
thats the big one lately. They will even have "Other people" reach out and confirm. also even have the "artist" send u examples. Reverse search them and you will find them from other artists, even had one sennd a friend a pic from an official WoTC book
Damn thanks for that tho guys
Stay safe out there

I do have one specific question that the basic rules can’t tell me if you don’t mind me asking
Ask away
So who do I talk to about joining a new group

Do any of yall know how to DM?
This is my first time ever playing and somehow got inti DMing and was wondering if anyone could help
The folks at #dm-discussion would be able to give ya good advice
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
Also i recommend doing a module (pre written campaign) for your first time
Ahh okay sounds good and thank you
Lost mines of phandelver ,dragon of icespire peak, dragons of storm wreck island are good starters
im new to dnd and i know a little bit .. is there any tips for stuff in general :0 ?
It seems more difficult for
New players to get into groups these days.
What kind of tips are you looking for? As a player or DM?
as a player!! :)
Be nice to the DM and the other players
Don’t go past boundaries
Don’t attempt to test or annoy the DM for no reason
If possible bring your own dice
Know what your character can do, please (it helps the game progress faster and prevents disputes because you don’t understand the ruling)
COMMUNICATE
Also when making characters, have a core revolving around three points or sentences.
i suggest to focus on these three questions:
- Who are they
- How did they get their powers/abilities/training?
- Why are they adventuring
Nugget sliding in with the goated advice
Help for getting recruited:
- read the ads carefully
- offer up potential character concepts that fit the pitch rather than expecting to come in with your whole own character
- express enthusiasm about the pitch and tell the DM what excites you about it
- be realistic about the scheduling
Also just try to have fun
Is there a way to get Sphinx of Wonder or another Neopet without using Pact of the Chain, like with another class etc.? Following RAW, 5.5e books, no specific magic items
You can use any
O ok
Not that I'm aware. On the upside, you can get that with the Eldritch Adept feat.
It’s both (technically)!
D&D is a tabletop role-playing game. It can be and is popularly played online though
It's a role-playing game you play with people, and it so happens you can use online tools to play it by utilizing online tools and connections
is it okay for a fairy to be in a fighter class or rogue? im wondering if its gonna be hard to play as or for other people idk
Any species can be any class, so no worries
It also might be important to point out that the D&D fairy species is size “small” not “tiny.” They aren’t the little 6in tall fairies that you see in media like Zelda or Peter Pan. A D&D fairy is about 2-3ft tall or so. Closer to a halfling with wings than anything else
If you can look at the fairy species in MPMM, as all you need to do to adapt it to 5.5e is ignore the ability score bonuses it gives
is it just me or does cleric feel a bit.. underwhelming? i might be missing something
what about the cleric is underwhelming to you
i can't quite put my finger on it but maybe the spells
maybe it's because i feel i can't use most of them because i'm already concentrating on another spell
Guiding bolt always struck me as pretty potent. Maybe it's best to ration your concentration spells and see what's good from the rest?
Cleric is typically regarded as one of the strongest classes in the game. But discussing balance and optimization is a bit beyond the scope of this channel. If the class doesn't quite sit right with you, it could just be that it doesn't match your preferred playstyle, which is totally fine.
yeah i agree it's strong. i got to save my party a few times and made some encounters very easy, but i'm not sure if it's the most captivating gameplay
yeah, sounds like a playstyle mismatch then
perhaps paladin next time
It can depend on the subclass, level and your playstyle preference
I went with life domain since that's what i enjoyed in bg3 and we are level 8. As for my playstyle, i like being in the front line and buffing people
Life domain is a little on the lower end in terms of power, because it's main thing is obviously healing people
You know what. It might've been bg3 spoiling me with powerful items that allow me to do big damage anyways
Most likely 😅 BG3 magic items can really buff you up in the mid to late game
Well yeah that doesn't happen as much in dnd due to attunement mostly and you won't find as many items
Lol i guess that's it then
maybe i'll ask a blacksmith for a little something like a +1 mace
wait, those buff hit dc not damage, nvm
good to know, ty
Yeah, BG3 definitely spoils you with those items But honestly, your playstyle sounds more like you’d enjoy something a bit more active than pure Life Domain Like, if you enjoy being frontline plus buffing, you might wanna try something like War or Tempest domain next time, they feel way more in the action Or even Paladin, as they said, you still get that support vibe, but you’re also smacking things, and it feels way more satisfying Also, ngl, asking a blacksmith for a plus 1 weapon is still a good move, even if it’s just a hit bonus, it adds up over time lowkey sounds like you’re not weak, just not vibing with the role fully
5.5e knowledge cleric looks really fun c:
good mix of in and out of combat abilities when paired with the standard cleric kit
sounds like great advice from everyone, such a nice community
i'll have to get out of my comfort zone to try those but sounds interesting, thanks
Stepping out of your comfort zone in D&D usually pays off big time, you end up discovering playstyles you didn’t even think you’d enjoy, and Knowledge cleric does sound like a fun switch, especially if you wanna feel useful both in and out of combat
Hello! I am sure you've heard this before but I am old school 2nd Edition and I recently bought the 5th Edition books. Would anyone be willing to teach me some basics on the 'new' combat (no THAC0? waaahh?) system on Table Top Simulator? This is to run a campaign with my kids. When I played 2nd edition I was the DM, back in the long ago days. (not quite right now, at work)

Welcome! Unfortunately due to the large number of people who join this server every day, we don’t have the resources to do one-on-one lessons with everyone. But we have plenty of resources to help you learn at your own pace. Those resources are linked above, including the free version of the basic rules. And though we can’t do guided one-on-one lessons, we’re more than happy to answer any specific questions you might have. Just ask them here in this chat
My attachment to THAC0 is my biggest downfall because I have read into the 5th edition DM guide and I think I am still overcomplicating it.
Personally, I’ve only ever played 5e, but I love talking with people who played old school D&D. I find it fascinating to see how the game has developed over time
Definitely not looking for anything like 'staff' to teach me, but rather some DM with a bit of time to go through 20 minutes. 😉
Welcome back! yeah 5e combat is way more straightforward compared to 2e, no THAC0 anymore thank god lolyou roll a d20, add your attack bonus, and try to beat the enemy’s AC that’s pretty much the core of it everything else (actions, bonus actions, movement) just builds on that, so it’s a lot more clean and fast-paced also that’s really cool you’re running a game for your kids, they’re gonna have a blast c
Also, I heard and have seen videos that the edition(s) after 5th are very ummm.....different. With almost 'fluffy' monsters and you don't 'kill' things anymore?
There’s still plenty of killing in 5e
It’s far less likely for player characters to die (though not impossible by any means. There’s still plenty of danger) but the players will be felling monsters on the regular
My kids are 5, 10, 12, 17...so there is a lot of fighting, and walking off, but still its good to get them off the devices. Trying to instill that with D&D and board games in general.
