Is eldritch blast, mage hand, minor illusion, vicious mockery and guidance (vicious mockery and guidance are specifically from tome) good for an undead warlock?
2014 or 2024?, because if this is 2024, you're missing one off of Tome; I'm assuming 14 because you already have a subclass
2024 tome gives four cantrips?
3
Wait do warlocks start with 3 cantrips?
I always remembered 2 cantrips but I might have it wrong
they start with two, I was assuming you were getting one from another source because you only listed two as coming from Tome
One of the other 3 is coming from tome. Just that the other 3 are on the warlock list so there wasn't a need to specify which one
I would probably drop vicious mockery, if you need a saved-based damaging cantrip grab toll the dead instead, at least when you reach later levels and enemies have more than one attack
Falls off severely at level 5
but with vicious mockery, you can kill people with dad jokes
true, but you can do that with any thing that does damage technically; you just shout your one liners when you hit them XD
Hi I am Akcent I am quite new to dnd I have been part of 1 campaign that was unofficial and was more of a one shot I am tring to create a more dnd specific campaign any tips
I wanna kill people with roasts lmao. Also that disadvantage on attack rolls... pretty appealing
any utility suggestions between cantrip and 1st level spells
Class?
wizard
mage hand is always useful
Yep I've got that one already, its just because I have a lot of attack spells and only seem to use chromatic orb and fire bolt most of the time and don't need the others.
basically just want utility as well as shield for protection and the attacks as mentioned
Hi I am Akcent I am quite new to dnd I have been part of 1 campaign that was unofficial and was more of a one shot I am tring to create a more dnd specific campaign any tips
Lv1 spells: Detect Magic, Sleep, False Life, Shield, Absorb Elements
Cantrips: Mind Silver, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation
minor illusion is useful
ok il go ahead and look them up now
i don't see Mind Silver on my end im using dnd beyond
usually when its locked you can still see it appear but you cant see the stats?
Mind Sliver is Source: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (2014) or PHB 2024
Its also an optional spell, maybe that's why
anybody tryna help me build a character, I got the main idea I just have no idea how to put this stuff together
Can anyone tell me some video and websites I could go to learn about dnd
D&D Beyond has some great rules or even watch youtube videos
Ok
dndbeyond is garbage honestly, don’t recommend it
What issues are you having with the platform?
Also feel free to post your character idea in #character-discussion
It’s too pay-to-use, wotc just turned it into a cashgrab. Roll20 is honestly a much better alternative, or just making paper character sheets.
You still have to pay for content outside of the Free Rules on roll20
roll20 is honestly better for the purpose of online campaigns. I rlly don’t trust any website for character making.
That's... what roll20 is
It's a pick your poison type of situation if you're considering only ddbeyond and roll20.
If you want to make sure you always have access to your content forever, books are what you want. Second best would be something like foundry, where you get your data locally.
Be galaxy brained and make an excel chart for making character sheets
Or use fillable pdfs those work too
i just ain’t tryna spend $30-$40 to make a changeling. Paywalling the simplest of features is kinda ridiculous, not to mention an enormous turn off for newer players.
In times like these there's always just fillable pdfs which have no restrictions
What with?
Hellooo!! Somewhat new to dnd, but not to character design and general roleplay.
Does anyone know a good website or other tools to adapt a character to fit dnd overall, concerning stats and spells, weapons, items etc? Are there set things i have to use or can these things be customized? Thank you
The quickest way is probably to use the DDBeyond character builder: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
As far as adapting a character from other media to D&D goes, I think it can be quite hard. D&D has quite specific rules that don't follow what you might be used to from other games and or systems.
Customization mainly comes in the form of your class and subclass choices.
Understanding the basics and how to build a character are going to be essential for customization.
I just meant adapting in forms of their class and items and stuff, so this helps, thank you! If thats what you mean by rules.
whats an average health from a halfling cleric?
Health depends on your level and constitution score, apart from class.
Here you can see how much you gain when you level up:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
My level 1 Bard only has max like 10 hit points. 3 well thrown rocks would kill this guy. Is this normal as a start?
Yes
That's actually quite high for a bard at level 1. Level 1 characters are quite squishy.
Ehh I would say that’s average
In fact, it's high enough not to be possible with standard array.
Huh?
Bards have a d6
No
You'd need a +4 Con
D8
Oh, I looked at the wrong thing. 😔
Yeah then I agree, it sounds quite average.
My bad, on DDB it says 9 hit points.
That’s still relatively normal
So you probably have a 12 or 13 in Con
That's quite alright. Just don't try to emulate a barbarian and you'll do fine.
Level 1 is quite deadly. Once you hot level 3, it becomes less scary
When you adapt a character to DnD... Always. Check. Subclasses. You usually won't know what a character should be adapted into once you know their subclass. For example, if I wanted to build a Mewtwo, i wouldn't know which class I would make one (unless you somehow still use Mystic), but if I know about Aberrant Sorcerer, I'd know to make Mewtwo one of those
make a post!
also are non-vc games this rare...?
Fairly rare, yeah
i nearly only saw 3
Try #looking-for-community . Some servers might host pbp
wait wait wat is pbp
Play by post, or text based games
Technically i think there’s a slight difference between the two but it’s effectively the same if you don’t wanna VC
(participate in live voice and text role-play,) does this mean this community has both text games and voice games?
Seems so, though “roleplay” isn’t inherently games (some just roleplay for fun)
Couldn’t hurt though
oh k ty
I wanted to say thank you to @velvet jetty and @harsh fjord for giving some tipps for my first DnD Campaign a few Months ago. It was a total success. Thank you very much. Without you I wouldn't had known where to start. ❤️
Great to here you got good help

Hi, just getting into dnd. I’ve hosted a few games as a dm and have a campaign I’m trying to run for me and some friends as we’re all new to 5e and ttrpg’s in general. I’ve been looking to play with a group of experienced players and an experienced dm so I can bring what I learn to my own table. Anychance anyone could point me in the right direction, thanks 🙂
I can help. I do homebrew tho so you might get confused at points because im not really dedicated to any edition
I’m fine with that, i dont have any issue playing a homebrew. Would be a good experience anyway
Good to know, what timezone r u?
Ah ok. Im AEST Australia
Ahhh right. Might be a bit of conflict with time then
Yeah
What time do you usually play in Australia
Im ok to play any time as long as im free. I usually dont play past 1 am here or before 9 am
Idk how that converts to gmt
I’ll have a look
you could use hammer time.
Use what?
I don't think I can post it here. But google hammertime. It converts time zones to your time zone.
Ok
it is regularly used for discord/roll20 games.
What time is it for u rn
I mean 6pm for you is around 8am for me. And if it’s a weekend game I don’t mind playing in my mornings haha. Currently 13:37 here guessing around 00:30 for you
Its 11:38 PM for me or 23:38
So your 10 hours ahead of me
Im usually only available on friday and saturday after noons.
Do you have a time frame ur comfortable with playing at
I mean Saturdays for me are probably best. And if it’s Saturday afternoon for you that’s best I’m happy to play a Saturday morning here
Alright sounds good to me
10 at night is around 10 in the morning for you so how does that sound?
Goos to know. Do you have a character already? I have some custom classes and races if u dont
I currently have a green dragon born paladin I’ve made but yet to actually play as I’ve been dm. Idk if that would work with your home brew? If not I can always create a new character
Sounds perfectly good to me.
Great! Thanks for the help. Have you got a discord server or private group I could join so we can organise it? Also do you use roll 20 or theatre of the mind
Ill make a server. I also dont usually do online stuff so what is roll 20 or theatre of the mind.
Roll 20 is an online map creator that you can use to play 5e, other ttrpg’s like call of cathulu or home brews. And from my knowledge they’re of the mind is just playing the game by describing the world and combat encounters rather than having a physical map or board laying out the form of the world. Again I’m very new to DnD so I could be wrong
But I’ve been using roll 20 to play online currently
Ah i see
I might take a look at them then.
But i dont really go by boars i just say proportions of rooms and stuff so you can get creative
Boards*
So theatre of the mind then, cool! I’m happy with that. Roll 20 can be tricky to get working anyway and I like the idea of interpretating the world. Feel like it’s more immersive
Yeah, i try and let my players have fun and get immersed
I invited u to the server. I have another player down to join
Cool. Will chat on there then
Not reading thru it all but soliciting games in this channel isn’t allowed so please move it to private or use the #find-a-game channels per the rules
Ahoy. Not new, but new-ish to anything after 1e. I have ran sessions for friends (never again), and slaughtered BG3 more then a fe times. Ill still need assistance with nuance rules, stacking, and meta tabe talk. Trying to find a long term campaign with a patient DM, no kids, no attention hogs, and a lite relaxed not too serious game. Id prefer to get my feet wet on a one shot, if ones available. Lets me get to know you's, and vice versa. Also, ive never RPed a game, nor played with anyone who does. Im not against it, just need parameters on how much (i dont wear costumes).
Hope we can set something up soon.
#find-a-game has the info for using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels!
Dmd u
Hey so most of my campaigns I've made so far have been joke ones, but I want to start making more serious campaigns (you know, with actual classes and mechanics)
What would be the best way to slowly implement those over time so I don't give my other players total whiplash from going from doing purely fun gimmick campaigns to more serious ones
Maybe do some one-shots and tell people upfront about your intent? "I'd like to do more serious campaigns, so let's do a test run of some short adventures. You in?"
Ok, I'll try that, thank you

I can't say I have any idea what you're talking about.
Oops nevermind. I just realized the Dracorage Mythal was broken.
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.

hello guys, i'm new to DnD and with my friends we want to play but we also want it to be chill, i'm the DM and if you have any tips so I can help my friends creating theirs characters i would be gratefull
This is a guide for the 2024 rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Would recomend perhaps reading the 'Playing the Game' chapter of the basic rules if you havent before or if you have then as a refresher; lots of incredibly useful info in there that could help shape character Ideas if there's a mechanic you find interesting
What is community game
Man this is annoying. Why is every session people post super late and in the middle of the week like 💔
Everyone is from north or south America so kinda impossible for me
I have a lot of minifigs I want to sell but don’t know how to price I have photos dm to see/help I don’t want to overcharge or sell them for extremely cheap thanks
You'd be best finding a server/forum that focuses on minis honestly
Thanks, would you have any suggestions on one?
There's a website forum called DakkaDakka that strongly focuses on wargames and minis
Thanks
are there any means to increase your spell save dc
By increasing your spellcasting stat, leveling up (since your proficiency bonus increases), and/or obtaining certain magic items.
its 8 plus spell cast mod plus prof bonus to calculate right?
Yep!

I'm confused about the part where you see if the monster your attacking makes a suck successful saving throw when casting a spell how dose that work?
If the spell has a saving throw, the targeted creatures make the saving throw and a successful save reduces the damage or effect of the spell (sometimes completely)
The saving throw happens as the spell hits/takes effect.
ah that's understandable if its not to much to ask could you run me through how an attack works from start to finish, for example with the spell fire bolt and a skeleton
On the player character's turn of initiative (e.g. their turn in combat), they make a spell attack using the fire bolt spell. They roll a d20 and their spell attack bonus to the roll. If it is equal to or higher than the armor class of the target it hits. The player then rolls the damage dice of the spell and the DM applies the rolled damage to the target. If the creature's hit points reaches 0, it is dead and removed from combat.
HEYY, im new to d&d and was wondering if anyone had any rule book recommendations?
There are so many idk where to start😭

ngl id js read the whole players handbook i find it fun to read them so
hi. im looking for someone who could help me with character creation and support during first DnD games
Check out #learn-to-play and first 2 chapters of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
The 2nd chapter specifically covers how to create a character step by step.
Feel free to ask specific questions
Hello! I was wondering, are any of the dnd books like compulsory to have for any reason? And what are they (if not just guides)?
Well you can start with just the free basic rules first: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If you like the game well enough, then the Players Handbook is a good first book investment.
If you're a Dungeon Master, then after the Players Handbook the Dungeon Master's Guidebook and Monster Manual would be useful books to have (not required though).
kk thank you!
Hey there! I'm new to dnd and was wondering if anyone can recommend me and rule book, there a lot and i don't know which one is like....idk more beginner friendly? I genuinely just only know what the roles do and nothing else
also i was hoping if anyone knew a server where a campaign was starting soon 💀
I am
My timezone is IST
Oh crap sorry
Ok
Check #learn-to-play and the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If dnd newcomers cant ask questions here then what is this channel for?
You can ask questions here, wdym?
They asked for a rulebook recommendation, and was given the best free choice
Also, there are far more new players than people who help newbies here, so more in depth teaching is difficult.
And as for games, they’re off topic except for the lfg channels
Lots of DMs looking for players in #looking-for-players
Asking questions and discussing D&D is fine - that’s what our discussion channels are for (check #channel-guide). But we don’t allow organizing games in our discussion channels - that’s what our Looking For Game channels are for (see #find-a-game).
It’s about keeping things on topic - we don’t need our discussion channels inundated with people trying to organize games
Me (from germany) and a friend of mine (from korea) want to start playing DnD. But we are unsure how to get a DM and maybe some other players who are open to play with newbies, that don't speak english as their first language. Also we can only really play from <t:1769518800:t> to <t:1769533200:t> due to time zones. I fear that all that is a few to many issues for most DM's. Is there someone who has had a similar experience or something?
Hey just a random question i a party of 8 possible we rotate the role of dm everytime?
Is this 1 DM + 7 Players? Because it's.. doable but 5e is designed for 1 DM + 4 players.
The more players you add, the more it will struggle. I found 6 players honestly a bit too much at times, as it really slows Combat down if you try to balance for that amount and means less sharing the spotlight.
Might be better to split into two 1 DM + 3 players groups at that point.
Im not sure i want to cause you know we dont wanna leave anyone out plus the dm is also the host and i think if we just get everyone to think what to do before their turn comes we can be much faster or is that just completely wrong
It's doable, just a bit more cumbersome. Some suggestions for the DM:
- Don't add in too many more enemies to balance fights. Make them more dangerous instead (more HP, more damage, maybe one or two legendary actions to the 'boss' of each fight to balance action economy).
- recap what's happened more, to make sure people who've been waiting a while to do something know what's going on if they've zoned out.
- Check in on players more, to make sure everyone has chance to engage.
The last two can also be done by players. You can check in on each other, make sure you're all engaging. Maybe have a little side chat for RP between characters currently not engaging with the DM, so you can keep active even if you're not 'in the spotlight' right now.
You could also swap out DMs now and again for sure. the Heroes on the Borderland starter kit has methods for that.
you could have the 1 DM & 3 Players thing but have the two DMs in kahoots with one another and maybe for like a final session you could all team up together or something
Go a little westmarchy- you're all adventurers in the same place, but you take turns DMing for small groups. Like Player 1, 5, 4 and 6 (with 6 DMing) go off one adventure and come back with news of what they've done, and Players 2, 3, 7 and 8 (with 8 DMing) will go on another adventure that might give more details. And you can mix and match.
How do you decide who to be ? DM ask to create a character and said can be anything and anyone. If a genie told me I can change my body and life to anything I want, I'd wish for the genie to tell me the answer of what I actually want.
Because I just pick at random
Or I pick whatever is the most optimized. Like most attacks with on-hit. (Monk 5, Fighter 3 for 6 attacks a turn?)
For me, it's a combination of things:
- I like trying new classes/subclasses/species. I have favorites, but if I got a lot of play out of a specific option, I'm not likely to reuse it for a long time.
- I like classes that give me a lot of options. Usually this means spellcasters, but I also really enjoy rogues for their skills and for being more or less resource-less.
- I like filling gaps in the party (and avoiding stepping on anyone else's toes), so I try to see what the group is lacking.
- I like particular flavors. Any of the fey-themed species/subclasses are my jam. I also love weirdos (thri-kreen, warforged, etc.).
I also make characters for fun, so if I see an opportunity to pick a particular kind of character, odds are good I already have something in that vein.
can someone run me down quickly on basic DnD rules?

Well I wanted to have a quick understandble and short run down of what I should know the best. I'm not the best at reading and my attention span is very low.
I’ve been wanting to do some dnd for a while but haven’t been able to find any games. I’m very new. Id also like to make some friends that do dnd so they can help me with any questions 🙂
Have you look at the #find-a-game channels?
Yeah but I’m not sure how to join them
The channel itself has instructions on how to do that.
Hey Few questions so just posting them all together.
1: I have joined some pretty bad groups recently any advise on screening from a player pov while still finding a group within a reasonable amount of time.
2: I am trying to do something a bit strange. Looking to make a server with like 2 other dms and a few players. (not a lot. like 3-4) Where we are each dming a game and playing together 2-3 times a week with the same people.
Bit confused on where to post this as lfp and lfd dont make sense as I am looking for both and lfc is for large groups.
3: Is it possible to make a living as a dm/anything dnd related beside on ty or something
For #2, I'd say that'd be #looking-for-community.
Some folks do run D&D as a full-time job, but it is difficult, like pretty much any creative endeavor.
As for screening, it depends if these are existing groups you're joining or if you're all coming together for the first time.
So i am new to DND and i was wondering if anyone has a video or videos that could help me get to learn the basics.

thought lfc was more for large groups
See the "Introductory videos" linked above!
I think you could still get away with a smaller server in that channel. You can always ask in #moderator-support to be sure.
- I don't have much experience playing with strangers online, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I think you need to temper your expectations about what is a "reasonable amount of time." Session 0 is your main opportunity to get a gauge on the group and the vibe/style of the game, and if its not a good fit for you, then you'll need to start the process over and look for a new group. Take your time with it, because its so, so, so important to find a good group that fits the style of play you are looking for. As the famous saying goes: "not playing D&D is better than playing bad D&D."
My reasonable time was a few months to half a year
I'd agree that's a reasonable timeframe to find a good group and start playing

I’m playing dnd with google AI
If you’re new, I’d suggest using a prewritten adventure as that way you can focus on running the game rather then coming up with everything yourself
Familiarise yourself and the table with the rules. I also recommend you play either a one shot, a pre written campaign, or both.
As a new DM, that's a tough ask. I would recommend stringing together prewritten one-shots OR making a short adventure rather than a full campaign. You have a lot of leveling up to do as a DM, so no sense setting yourself one of the harder tasks from the start!
Ok Ty all
If you DO want to make your own campaign, start small and build from there. Worldbuild the skeleton of the campaign, and start fleshing out the pieces the player will interact with.
But tbh just do a one shot or module, it’s easier.

heyyy im new to dnd :3
Hi new to dnd, I’m Nugget!
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Hiya
Idk if this is the right server to ask but I am baffled on character sheets and I was wondering how to create a lvl 3 Druid character sheet yt tutorials are too non-specific

Hey 👋 hope all's good here
Hi! I'm wanting to get into D&D, but I'll be away for a few weeks in March. Would y'all suggest I find like a one shot or adventures league or just wait until after March to join a group?
howdy doody I am very new to dnd with my partner and we are trying to find a dm who wouldn't mind helping us learn make characters and whatnot
Hey guys, are there any campaigns for like, beginners? I assume I should start by creating my character, but if someone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it
Most of the starter sets and essentials kit adventures tend to be great starter adventures (Lost mine of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire Peak, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, Heroes of the Borderlands) 😎
Other than that there are plenty of one-shots (basically short adventures that are gonna take just a session or two) that are great to start with, without being dedicated to a longer adventure right off the bat
Sounds great! One-shots until I get the feel of everything is most definitely a great option. I’ll be on the lookout!
mage armor or false life i need one heath buff spell witch is better
Situational, but you'll probably benefit from mage armor more. It stays on even when hit, while false life is gone once you run out of temporary hit points 😛
are there any good aoe cantrip spells?
I don't think any really have any. Most cantrips tend to me more simple and limited 🤔
Sword Burst and Thunderclap, to name two actually
is burning hands good for a first level spell, aoe
It's not bad
That's up to you. If I felt like I knew the rules and was itching to play, I'd join whatever games would have me!
I am kinda itching to play 😂 I've been binging critical role to scratch the itch best I can haha
Then I'd find a table. One of the nice things about playing one-shots or Adventurers League is that, even if the game is bad, you're not locked into any long-term commitment. Plus, you'll hopefully learn a bit about what you do and don't want in a game!
Best level 1 spells for wizard? Planning to go chronurgy (i know it's kind of broken, I just like the flavour)
#character-discussion would be the better channel, possibly even #optimization!
can other players go in your shield
would anyone be willing to pick up 2 people who don't know or remember much about dnd to hopefully teach them and run a campaign or one shot much appreciative to whoever decides to take us under their wing
Anyone have room for a new dnd player ?
With my work schedule it’s hard to find a group to run a long campaign as it would have to be mornings or after 11 pm est for me, where would the best spot be to just find one shot campaigns so I can still play on my days off? Any suggestions, I haven’t seen many in this discord pop up.
#looking-for-community would be a great second to #looking-for-players if you have weird hours. Some communities are primarily built on one-shots, so you might find something that works for you!
Thank you! Only time I really ever get to play D&D these days are the four days at Gen con and that’s just not enough for me😂
I’m building my first character for a session with my friends. How do we feel about an artificer who whole heartedly believes he is Santa Clause
Artificer might be a little too "High-Tech" for that, but DMs always allow flavour.
May I suggest a Ranger with Woodcarving Tools and the Pass Without Trace spell?
Using a pop reference sounds fitting for a joke character, but I'd make sure that everyone else is fine with this type of nonseriousness.
What would consider it too high tech? I’ve only really done a session 0 with a paladin, and yes they would be okay with a joke character
I think you can quite easily flavor artificer as being enchantment-based rather than high tech. And Santa having a bunch of magical toys sounds very fitting.
Basically: its dependent on the setting. If the DM is fine with it, then go for it. Artificers aren't allowed in every campaign. I was just suggesting a "approved everwhere" revision.
Ah okay thanks!
Is the Drakewarden subclass too broken to use?
Could argue that it's on the more underpowered side of Ranger classes.
really? I thought summoning a big dragon-like thing would make it top tier
Nah, I’d say it’s around middle of the road for Ranger.
7/10 imo for Ranger, maybe a lil less
hi im a true beginner to DnD, I became interested because of the voice actors for the Magnus Archives playing mini campaigns of ttrpgs. I fear I am lost even reading the resources on this server and online
Hey y’all, I’m completely new to dnd wanna get started but idk where to start and want to learn by playing
i have a question can anyone help me with making my first ever character

Welcome everyone. The links above cover a lot of the newcomer ground.
Middle of the ground
A 2/4 star, not too good not too bad
Top tier stuff is Gloom Stalker (an artstyle)
hello
Gloom Stalker my beloved.
I noticed Necromancy spells often have material components that require extremely valuable items. Create Undead as an example, for each Ghoul a 150+ GP black onyx. I can not remember ever having had above 150 GP in the few times we played, does DND have like gold scaling the higher level you get? How would one be able to be consistent with Necromancy?
I guess the spell doesn't say the materials are consumed so I guess one could just aquire them over time and re-use?
Yeah, the DMG generally suggests higher and higher amounts of gold as loot rewards the higher in level you go.
Though of course the actual loot distribution can vary wildly between DMs.
And if you need certain things, seek them out in the world. You don't have to sit on your hands and wait for the adventure to find you if you've got a goal in mind.
Randomly seeking a black onyx seems like a difficult find
I see though, gonna see how it works out
I'm a DM that usually waives cost requirements as long as the object isn't consumed. Depends on how broken I think it could be.
Zup
You don't just go poking bushes. You ask people, interact. Look for a sculptor or artist. Do some research and find where onyx can be found. Given that it's for a spell, maybe search out folk who would know about it, like another wizard.
You don’t go fishing in a desert after all

the box above does a good job at it
Hey 🙂 I’m making a cleric character and was wondering how the “faith” box works on the sheet? Can I put any faith including irl ones or do I choose a dnd faith (where do I find those if so)?
Until you find a DM, I wouldn't worry too much about that box. Your DM may be using specific DnD gods in their setting, or nay be using entirely made up ones. If you still want to fill it out, it might be safe to put general themes such as "God of nature" rather than specific names or denominations.
Can my cleric be monotheistic? Like just believing in God in the traditional sense instead of a god of whatever
It's fairly common for a cleric to focus on one deity in particular, if that's what you mean.
I mean more specifically like not a deity who does one thing, more like a cleric who believes in one all-encompassing god.
That's much less common in most settings. Since the gods have direct and very explicit influence on the world in most DnD settings, it's hard to make the claim that there's only one.
Is it possible that the cleric can believe that without altering the game?
Like just a “this is a cool thing abt my character, they believe this uncommon thing”
In some pantheons, that can't easily be rectified with how gods interact with the rest of the universe. I could see a cleric thinking they are praying to one god, when it's really a bunch of different ones "in secret".
Ultimately that's a question for the DM.
The issue is (and I don’t mean to be uptight) my irl faith doesn’t allow me to even RP worshipping/believing in polytheistic elements of the game but I really want to get into dnd. Suggestions?
You could not play a cleric? Or play a cleric who draws their power from an idea, philosophy, or unspecified cosmic force.
Unspecified cosmic force works!
You could also play a class that is similar to a cleric, like druids. They can heal and support, and their belief structure is very flexible too.
Ultimately though, I think iamrazorwings suggestion is probably best. The "issue" with gods in D&D is that they are much more likely to "show up" than in other media.
So your DM would almost necessarily have to integrate that unique god somehow.
It’s okay if they show up as long as my character doesn’t specify believing in them or worshipping them or acknowledging them as gods, maybe I could tell my DM to steer that away from my character in particular.
And iamrazorwings’ suggestion about an unspecified cosmic force is also good
Deva what do you think of an “unspecified cosmic force”. Would that be easier to implement into a game than a custom god?
Yeah for sure. Talk it out with your DM first, but personally that seems like the most productive course here.
Thanks for all the help guys :] this is a super supportive community, happy to become a part of it 👍
Guys tips for me im a new dm and my friends are also new

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The bot posts above all have very helpful information for you to get started
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
So I let ai make my character sheet can someone look over it to make sure it’s ok thx in advance
From the server #rules:
Any content created, in whole or in part, through the use of artificial intelligence is not permitted.
I made the character and the mini I Jst didn’t know how to make the character sheet
My fault for picking a Druid for my first class
Jst out of curiosity it isn’t rlly content is it
I'd recommend reading the free rules on DnDbeyond then, there's a step by step guide on creating a character
I would suspect it is. Imagine folks ask you, "Why did you [make this choice]?" You would have to answer, "Because the AI said so," which makes for an unproductive discussion. You can check with #moderator-support to be sure, though.
Including Druid or…
The guide applies to all classes.

Hey everyone!
My mates and I are fairly new to D&D, we’ve played a starter set and loved it and now we want to try and get more creative (and I’ve drawn the DM stick) .
I want to start building my own world, but I’m looking for a good tool to keep everything organised in one place (locations, NPCs, factions, quests, secrets, etc.) that I can easily reference during sessions. What tools or setups do you recommend for beginner DMs?
Obsidian and Notion are two of the most recommended platforms. World Anvil gets a lot of advertisements in the D&D space, but I've never seen it in action. Someone with a strong knowledge of Google Docs or MS Word can probably make either work well, depending on the amount of info you have.
(My recommendation: don't build the world all at once, at least not in detail. Start small and specific, then fill in as you go.)
I like World Anvil, but the best features are behind a paywall
you can still make really detailed worlds with it though, and it's nice for organisation
razorwing's suggestions are all great, but the one I'd like to add on is Microsoft One Note. The tab structure of that program works very well for me. I break things down into categories, exactly how you listed them in your post (locations, NPCs, factions, etc).
I'll also echo their advice to keep things small as you start out. Do not try to make an entire world. Just the starting town will do. Don't overwhelm yourself before you even play the game
Are there any apps or sites that you can use to create a DND character? Like a physical customization not just a character sheet? I'm new to this so I'm not entirely sure where to go or what to do
Hero Forge is probably the most common one and has a good amount of options even at the free level.
heroforge is very good for this imo, yeah
Oh alright tysm
how can i find a game nobody is answering on threads
I was about to suggest the same thing. But if you're looking for other programs that help you design a physical character, you might get some better suggestions in #third-party
If people haven't responded yet, you might give them some time. It is still working hours in the US, where I suspect most folks are located. You can also post an ad yourself in #looking-for-dm (follow #find-a-game's instructions), but I don't imagine that will net you tons of replies.
Cast a wide net. You can check other discord servers, and other websites like reddit or facebook. But also, make sure you have reasonable expectations. D&D is not a "pick up and play right now" type of game. It can take a week or more to set up a group and find a time that works for everyone. Let alone trying to find a group where everyone's interests and expectations are aligned. Don't expect people to respond instantly when you said a reply to their advertisements. They're usually posted far in advanced from when someone actually wants to play
ahhhh ok im new to dnd so i dont really know anything and i want to try one game to get some exp on it
thakns btw

Hiii I’m a newcomer well I’ve been here awhile and have kept my interest but it’s sparked up again and I really want to make a character sheet for a centaur oc!! but it seems pretty complex and difficult… i also wanna join a campaign but ik it’ll take time and weeks or more for that
Not too difficult really, a few hours maybe between the first two chapters and buildinga practice cahracter
games are easy enough to find online, though YMMV depending on time zone or if you want local games
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Hiiii I have a bit of a dumb question?
You can always ask
No such thing as a stupid question
So uhhhh can you find actual good campaigns from the channels on here? Haven’t had much good experience with public campaigns 😭
It’s relatively common, and I know some good DM’s here
So I assume so
Ah okay thank you!!
Hellooo!! so i’m playing my first one shot as the DM and im slightly confused on the whole casting spells and dice system?? does anyone have a easy way to explain it????
Now to figure out if I can find a text campaign then spend a couple hours working on my character sheet
Thanks!! You’ve been a good help for my start ☺️
Shall I try and explain the spells or the dice first?
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Basically, for most of the game, it will be this gameplay loop:
you want to do something, your DM calls for you to roll a dice (usually a d20), you add relevant modifiers depending on how good your character is at that action, and then you either roll more dice to decide the severity of the result/attack or the d20 decides it
As for the spells, imma use an analogy of a gun
So in this example, +5 is a modifier
Yes
Oh i see. do scores determine the modifier
Usually
Plus sometimes a proficiency bonus
Which is a bonus to some rolls if your character is skilled in the area
ohh okay. so when you roll, the DM has a certain number in mind and you try to beat the number while using a modifier to help?
There are two main things:
prepared spells and spell slots. These are NOT the same.
Imagine your caster is a shotgun. You can fill this shotgun with shells, and in THAT you can fill with special ammo. In this case, the amount of shells you can fire is your spell slots and the type of filling that you can select from is your prepared spells.
To give an example, a level 1 wizard
Oh, and you get cantrips that you can fire with no cost
4 prepared spells and 2 level 1 spell slots
That means you can shoot 2 “shells” (spell slots) of a level one “calibre”, and you can fill these shells with your choice of four different types of “ammo”(prepared spells)
Does that make sense or have I lost you
So like spell shots are limited and the bullets come from your prepared spells ?
Yes
Are the bullets made with a like… another spell
Yes
For example, “firing” a shield spells or a “magic missile” spell.
You can only “fire” twice per long rest, and you choose from 4 spells
Ohh
That actually makes a lot of sense
No, it just takes awhile for my brain to understand 😭 i have a clearer picture of how it works now

Nice and easy to understand (for me at least) do you know how the monk moves work too?
Think they're joking about autism
Anyway let's get back to helping folks out with getting started with D&D here
If you're new to D&D we have #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I actually did have a question. How would a spell scroll with a range of touch work? Could I use a familiar to make a spell scroll missile
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them
You cast it and as part of the casting need to touch the target
Honestly I'm looking for specific details on how spell scrolls work in general
If you have a familiar, the familiar can deliver the touch requirement of the spell.
The spell scroll is consumed as part of the casting (also the spell needs to be one in your class spell list)
Ok and how does scribing spell scrolls work? Do you need to have the spell in your spell slots in order to scribe the spell?
You'd need to refer to the Spell Scroll item: https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/9229085-spell-scroll
Thx
okay i’m back…. again. how can someone have a score of 30 if like the max is 20 on a dice??? i’m so confused i apologize for my silly questions
If you mean a result of 30, there's plenty of ways to add to the total rolled on the die
That's what modifiers and proficiences are for
ah okay understood

No image permissions in most channels. But you can use a reputable image/file sharing service (like Google Drive) and share a link that way - make sure to explain the link when sharing so you follow server rules
Is PDF safe?
Depends on who and what created it - it’s just a file format but folks can put malicious stuff in lots of file formats…
It's just my character sheet from dnd beyond, I got the PDF from the website after I created my character
You can share the url to the web version of the sheet and it will embed here on the server (D&D owns D&DBeyond)
Sure 🙂 one sec
I’ll also note that we have #character-discussion if you are asking for more in-depth character feedback and discussion

Been looking for my school tabletop club i honestly just can’t find it and it kinda embaresing that i can’t just ask where it is cause of my social anxiety but i gotta try wish me luck i really wanna play dnd
You got this! And don't be embarrassed, social anxiety can be really tough but just the first small step is something to be proud of.
Had a cold this week, we wanted to have a session this Saturday so hopefully the cough is gone until then. Finally starting a long running campaign with more regular sessions, can't wait to try Illusionist
Illusionist is a fun one, or so I’ve heard
Also I've been reading about Planes a lot in the spell section of the handbook, but didn't really find an explanation as to what these planes are
Nevermind, its in the appendix
Hey does anyone know of a good place to find one shots to join on Discord?
I would check out ServerScout: https://pnpnews.de/
Set the language to English, use dnd for your keyword, then scroll through the results. There's no specific server I know if that only focuses on one-shots; you've just gotta search various listings!
idk if i need to put this here or in the dnd rules channel, or if its even allowed, it's probably a dumb question but ;-; i'm wanting to do smth that has dnd format but for like... a fandom, if that makes sense? idk if that is allowed here but i want to ask before i step on toes 😭
Wouldn’t be in rules, but what do you mean by a fandom?
Like a homebrewed setting?
If by format you mean there's a game master and players who tell a story using rules, that's just a TTRPG. But this server is only about D&D, with the exception of #non-dnd-topics.
However if it’s using the dnd system but for a setting that is related to the fandom but still follows dnd rules, it’s ok
ohhh okay, that makes sense, thank you! and as for the fandom thing, i'm mostly wanting to do a sonic rpg thing
but idk where to look i'm new to all of this
Sounds like not dnd then, just a sonic TTRPG…
Yeah, you probably want a generic TTRPG server, then, if you're looking for players or folks to talk to you about your idea.
okay, tysm! i appreciate the help
Hey, I'm starting my second camping, and it's my first time being the DM, I'm wondering if my plot idea so far is ok
The players start in a village, it consists of a blacksmith, market, houses. The main problem is that at night, one villager Gose missing, no trace. Theres a forest near by, and a old villager says he saw drag marks in the ground going into the forest. So their main goal is to find/rescue the villagers
Well first of all, do they have an incentive to find or rescue these villagers?
Yep
What's the incentive? You want to ensure it is something your players will bite on. I have made the mistake in the past of having weak incentives for player thinking "doing the right" and a little gold would be all it takes and sometimes that just doesn't cut it
Fairly new to DMing since I’ve only truly finished one campaign that didn’t fall through. I got tabletop simulator today and I’m wondering people’s thoughts about it, whether there’s a best table and minis to use, and how I should go about using it. Never tried it and it looks amazing but I get lost in all that it can do or how to use it all
Thank you
I'm looking to do a Kobold Paladin just don't know where to start. Any ideas? I'm also new to DND but a couple of my coworkers are starting a campaign and I 💯 want to hop on
Subclass.
Hey everyone
Im new so I just wsnted to say hi ^^
And ask which classes do u guys think r best for um beginners cuz I learned about d&d today and i am really interested and Id love to try it out
usually a martial class like fighter is good for beginners and is consistent as you level up. If you're wishing for something of spell casting I think you'll like warlock, as they can be very customizeable
I like supports
Is there classes that can like talk to animals or have pets?
Druids and Rangers if you're wanting something anima/nature based.
Ranger sounds cool
Theyre the ones that use bows right
I hope I find a table to play on
Not too optimistic on that one from looking at others results but who knows
Rangers are your bow and arrow people who generally are good survivalist and great with nature knowledge. Some people don't find them entertaining because they revolve mostly around 1 mechanic, but they have a lot of power potential if you approach it right.
Druids are people that have a Circle they belong to that usually is defined by where they grew up, and what their beliefs are. They are known to use Wildshape, transforming themselves into different animals.
Do rangers have pets
IF you want IRL tables, you should check your local library, facebook groups, or university (if you go to one) if they have a club or whatever you can join.
I dont wanna be the pet i wanna have a pet
Having a pet dedicated to you is a bit difficult 24/7, but you can summon familiars (animals or beasts) to be alongside you using spells.
I will go to uni in about a month!! i got accepted into one
Gonna do cinema
Although these familiars aren't pemanent and you usually will have to resummon them.
Some ranger subclasses have a regular companion, like Beastmaster
Become like an actor or a director or something like that!!!
^^
BEASTMASTER
That sounds like I can have a pet.
Neuron activation
Beastmaster Ranger is the ultimate "nature" dude with a bow
Consider beastmaster ranger. You can look up some youtube videos on what they specifically are in detail, what they offer, and how they are usually played.
Could I be a pacifist and have my beasts do all the work?
like is there a way to do that or ma i just trolling
idk if I can cast spells as a ranger but if I can I could be support while my beast attacks
You could, but from my knowledge it's up to the DM how "pacifist" you can be. The beasts themselves are meant to be used as a tool and not as "do everything for me"
I was thinking they attack and I try to support them not by hitting the opponent directly but narratively I am helping them with their shots
I guess mechanically I would be attacking them haha
#find-a-game and #looking-for-dm if you're looking for games to join.
I posted there!!
It's really the other way around to my knowledge. You do the attacking and actions, and the beasts follow up to support you.
Awww well guess ill have to shoot people then
Death is far too common in D&D in general in my experiences.
Beastmaster can have the beasts attack, but it is hard to make only them attack at all times
Doesnt have to be all the time
You just have to get used to people dying.
I just dont like being damage dealer unless its necessary
Being a tank or support has always been my fave in games
Well being a support player with chip damage and picking off enemies isn't really a "damage dealer"
rangers are chip damage/pick offs? sounds fun then
If you really want a damage dealer or tank then you might like Barbarian or Paladin instead. Being in the front lines and all.
Can I make traps and stuff?
let me be a pet mother first then ill try being a tank if i find another session after
mmm are monks tanky?
or are they like quick fighters
Like are they the bulky hard hitters or like a martial artist thats all about skill flow technique yada yada yada
I haven't played a monk, but from what I've heard it's the ladder.
They're known for their movement and combo attacks they can do.
thats also sick as hell
I could try one after I try a ranger
Maybe am being too optimistic on finding a table tho
I prefer one online rn cuz I am in the process of moving and stuff its quite a shame i wont be able to for another month
Then fill out your #find-a-game and #looking-for-dm , check that periodically for a day or two
and also check out #looking-for-players as DMs post there that are wanting to hose
I did
Just praying for the best now!
Ill check periodically
Hi, I'm just curious what you meant
subclasses are when your character reaches to level 3
They are a bit like specializations within the class
For in irl analogy, a surgeon may be a “subclass” of doctor
My dm is having us start at level 3 and I was thinking of doing a Kobold Paladin but I've been thinking of Oath of Redemption
Thats a funny way to put it
In a paladin’s case, it’s what oath they swore.
Redemption ain’t half bad
Oh, I see. OK thank you
good luck with your build...
Remember that dying is suboptimal and to kill things until they die (or not considering you’re a redemption paladin)
Kobolds are goofy people to play as. As a draconic sorcerer kobold, mine gets overly emotional over everything and has to say everything on his mind with no filter. He's definitely a hot topic to interact with but fun too (and my party loves it)
I feel this kobold just got kicked out of his Warren he was in for being too nice to foes. Wouldn't hurt captives or anything as he believes people can change
I dig it. Kobolds, from what I've seen in games and all, are very extroverted and talkative
ah, a reform kobolds!!!
(I even voice act my character)
" Vamin" was found clutching a stuffed toy "Sir Fluffles" trembling and crying and refusing to lie.
So im thinking someone took him in
And really gave him that people aren't so bad
My kobold went from crying over the betrayal of a dragonborn PC (playable character, aka someone else's character in our party) to the BBEG, to burning down an abandoned village in anger, to being ecstatic that he meets a long time Kobold friend out of the blue. All in 2 sessions.
I'd say his motivation to become a paladin is because of his stuffed bear.
Adorable <3. Definitely give it a shot and have fun with it.
I guess what I'm more stuck on is actually making the character. Like through the character sheet. I'm good with ideas. Just not putting it together.
If that makes sense.
Read through chapter 2 of the free basic rules as it goes through creating a character step by step: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I know some of the other guys said I could have them as a dexterity paladin
^^ You can also ask for advice from #character-discussion if you still need clarification or ideas.
Hi everyone! 😊 I’m new here and new to D&D, but really excited to learn and get involved. I’ve got a character already and I’m hoping to find a beginner-friendly group to play with. Looking forward to meeting people! 🤘🏼

Thank you! Like I do have one built so far I guess I just need guidance if it looks correct
Like I guess for the character
I never played a Paladin so I literally can't help you. However, I do much better on character personality and species consistency for the actual roleplay part of it.
Thank you! 🙏
Like I mean at some point, he is gonna have to cross the line, but for the most part, he is gonna wanna try to make friends, but if not, he's gonna have to do it
"SMITE"
No problem! I know there are also a bunch of online and YouTube videos of the Paladin class that you can look up as well if that's more of your style for learning.
Oh that sounds good!
I will say this, as someone who's only been playing for about 2 months now: constantly talk with your DM about your character sheet and ask all questions. I've looked over my sorcerer almost every day for the last 2 months, even after about 10 sessions of DND so far with the character, and I still find questions and information about it that I didn't know before.

Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.

Just thought it seemed fitting
Of course, having a brand new player join a campaign as a sorcerer wasn't the best idea so... yeah xD
But hey, I pushed through and I enjoy it!
And there's up to 20 level of sorcerer to explore! 😉
We're at the end of our campaign, Undying, and we recently had our whole party receive a boon to level up 5 times in preparation for the BBEG fight in a session or 2.
It's getting quite intense!
The grand finale coming soon.
5 times?
Noice!
Yeah... one of our party members accidentally used a Wish spell they were granted by their diety way early on, and may have accidentally freed up the BBEG from their imprisonment by poor wording...
So...
Things went downhill very fast and my DM was like "well... you guys saved me a month of work" afterwards.
Sup chat
Hello!
Oh no...
Hm
Now I'm curious what the words were
Yeah. And to make matters worse my kobold was planning on sacrificing himself and destroying a key relic the BBEG's henchmen was about to grab by setting up an explosive trap. But the Wish spell threw everything out the window. So it was intense for my character.
My last bbeg was tiamat
The one I'm talking about, is almost a pure homebrew campaign. Homebrew gods and setting and all of that loosely based on canon D&D entities.
Hell yea, homebrews are always fun, my last dm let me homebrew an entire guts from berserk build
Yeah... wasn't good. But it did lead to some interesting character development within our party because, as a result, many secrets and alliances were revealed in the aftermath which led to a serious conversation about our intentions that ties to our backgrounds.
Obviously with in-RP aspects and discussion going on. Out of table, we're all very good friends and know that this is a fictional story we're creating together as a whole. We just happen to get really into our characters and it makes it fun.
Also we skipped 5 levels because our DM genuinely felt back because the way the encounter was set up turned out to be practically impossible and we were forced to make immediate, rash decisions due to very strict round limits before we ultimately lose.
So it was a mixture of our party misplaying the situation and the DM having an encounter way about what we can do at that moment.
I guess my character is 2 feet 2 inches and 35 lb is 78lbs too much for a bag?!?
Chain mail armor or am I crazy
Strong boi. Then again, my kobold sorcerer has more HP than my Minotaur Paladin so...
Gotta love that lmao
Up to your DM's discretion if they want encumbered or not. The general rule, to my knowledge, is that your carry weight 15 x your strength stat.
So my kobold's encumbered weight is 120 lbs of stuff he can carry (8 x 15)

Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

I’ve finally got a few people to run DnD with me, but I’m a new DM running a premade campaign for the first time(Dragons of Stormwreck Isle)
Any advice to make the game fun and enjoyable for my players? I’m worried I’ll end up messing something up
#dm-discussion is the way to go for that (now sleepy for realy)
The quick version is talk to your players, whether in a session zero (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game) or less formally. Basically, find out what they want out of play, tell them how you want to run, and try to meet in the middle.
Oh, and you'll absolutely make mistakes. But you should take those as opportunities to learn and grow. If you had fun with your friends, you did something right.
More in-depth conversation about DMing is best for #dm-discussion, as pointed out!
Hello, I am new to DND. I would love to learn and to join a campaign. I don’t have any friends that are interested in it so I would love make some and just be a part of my first ever D&D campaign

how do you gain more spell slots
When you level up. Your class table shows how many of each you have at each level
Me and my friends just got into dnd (3 players im dm) and i was doing a short little oneshot to teach them how to play (2 of them died fighting a single wolf so that was great) i still dont think they really get how to play is it better i do anoother tutorial esq one shot or go into a campaign and teach them along the way?
Id recommend doing a couple more oneshots that way they can get a bit more familiar with the basics before doing a campaign

Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Hii, new to DND. I really want to do a campaign specifically with my friends but we dont have a DM, we're broke college students so we cant really start. I'd love to get some help on where to start, cause i kinda want to be a DM just for my friends, but kinda scared... but id love to be a player too.

I’m scared of online campaigns
Little to say about that besides "you should start working on the anxiety underlining that fear"
First step is always the scariest, and it's only easy in hindsight
I’m actually incredibly sociable when it comes to face times or online calls but I am a complete stranger to dnd
I don’t have the books or dice or anything, I’m just learning off the server
im going crazy trying to make my character lmaooo
Can we help with something in particular?
Have you picked a class, species and background?
YouTube is another resource to pursue
Elaborate please

Every specific table culture will always be different, to include different homebrew and interpretation of the base rules. This is because it's a hobby - but learning the baseline first is still important.
You're never gonna pull up to a table with knowledge out the gate on how that specific game table works. You will ask embarrassing questions that feel obvious to everyone else already there. This is normal.
That’s not what they asked, they want to know how to import a character into a campaign

what do i put in the actions section of my character sheet? i'm playing a bard and it didn't get me to choose any spells or whatever and now there's nothing there

Hello
I wondering if anyone can give me some help. I’m new to dnd and have only been playing with ChatGPT. I have limited time to play and can’t really commit to a once a week game. But I recently found out about adventurers league from a coworker and was wondering if someone here could help figure out how to start that.
Check out the AL channels for more there. Visit the #channel-guide for a list.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Hey yall I am need of urgent assistance. Id been planning to set up a game for my friends but we’re all p busy and before I’d known it the day’s arrived (tmr). I’ve no gods damn clue what platform to use for battle maps as I’m completely new. From what I’ve seen, dungeon draft looks easy but my laptop for some reason doesn’t cooperate with it. Any very basic platforms with premade maps yall can provide?
D&DBeyond Maps has some preconfigured maps and is decently easy to use (alos works on mobile devices).
Owlbear.rodeo is also mobile device friendly and easy to use but doe not have preconfigured maps.
Also maybe check in #dm-discussion and #third-party for more community discussion and suggestions.
And remember maps are optional - all you need to play D&D is the rules (check pinned message for link to free basic rules), character sheets (way to track character), dice (physical or online), and a way to communicate (in person or virtual).
?tag new online
THANK YOUUU I will definitely check those out.
Owlbear Rodeo is my go-to, but as Noob said, it doesn't come with pre-loaded maps (outside of a few dead simple ones).
My favorite map-makers who offer stuff for free are Dyson Logos, 2-Minute Tabletop, Neutral Party, Dr. Mapzo, Angela Maps, and Reddit (r/dndmaps and r/battlemaps). Give those a Google and grab whatever will fit your needs!
Yeah also check out the pinned message in #dnd-maps for links to other useful map making tools and map resources.
Does anybody have the stranger things hellfire set I wanna know if its worth it buying
DungeonDraft's publisher, Megasploot, has a dedicated discord server you can reach out to for troubleshooting support. I can DM an invite to you - plus, a perma-invite should be available on their website.
If you can get it working on your laptop, it's flat-out my favorite option. Especially since you can download asset packs beyond the default (depends on the source if they're free or cost money themselves)
Thanks for the offer! I'm currently testing things out in dnd beyond but id like as many options as i can get.
Am I OK to DM you with that server invite to Megasploot? It'd suck to pay for their product and not be able to get it working, if nothing else you might qualify for a refund
while kind of a lot of memorisation work, you can just work with mental maps too and describe stuff, no need to see physical maps
I have a question about books
If I buy a book is there like a code or something that can get me like a new species like if I buy the monsters of the multiverse book on dnd beyond it’d get me new stuff but does that happen with irl books?
No, D&D Beyond access is a separate purchase from any physical books. There may be exceptions, of course, but I think it in general they're separate. You can privately create the content from physical books in DDB using the homebrew tools, but that can be tricky and time-intensive.
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
Oh ok thanks
Hi, I am a young new player and looking to learn and play. I am finding it difficult to find any games that are at a suitable time (GMT) that have availability for me to join. Can anyone give any advice? I have read the info that I can find on here but it takes me to channels that I am not able to send messages in 🤷♂️
Look for play by post (text based) games - that way meeting to play with everyone else at the same time is less an issue
And to use our Looking For Game channels you need to read #find-a-game carefully
You use bot commands to create posts in those channels
Otherwise use the threads on a post to communicate interest
I have dyslexia so i am better with voice calls to be able to learn and understand
Then worry less about timezones and focus more on "Is that I time I can devote 3-4 hours to play?"
Expand your search to other platforms. You can find a bunch in the guide linked in my bio.
I dont know what those are
They are listed in #find-a-game - the information is there.
But the bot commands start with /looking-for
So forward slash then type looking-for
I have looked at all timezones that would mean its not say 2am here, but nothing seems to have spaces
That's how it is sometimes unfortunately
But iamrazorwing had a great suggestion of looking beyond our server for games - you might also check your local hobby and book shops to see if they have any D&D groups meeting
I dont seem to have the option to even type anything in the sections like find a game
Type right in this channel - /looking-for and see what pops up
Let’s start a campaign
If you want to start a campaign go to either #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players
The newcomer channel is more for new players to ask questions
Magic Initiate is confusing, spell change says that you can replace a spell with a different one with the same level, indicating the spells could have higher levels at some point. But the feat explicitly states that I can only choose a level 1 spell that's always prepared.
Also it says repeatable, so can I just stack cantrips if I pick it multiple times?
which would seem extremely broken
You only have so many opportunities to take a feat
If you want to spend all of those getting more cantrips, it's an option, but you'll be missing out on other feats and ASIs
And yes, the specifics of Magic Initiate only let you pick a level 1 spell
so its just their wording confusing me
I see, I feel like having 4 or 6 cantrips at some point outshines most other feats
It doesn't really work that way
Then why do they explain it that way? They have the explicit sentence of its repeatability indicating it works exactly that way
Oh no I mean like, some feats that give you spells are good by virtue of the free spell per day
The free spell is just part of it, but cantrips generally seem pretty OP and mostly are free too
And in Magic Initate's case its getting Goodberry as Life Cleric so you can do funny heal strats outside of combat w/o multiclassing
There's not really a lot of cantrips that are super essential/good to begin with, nothing in particular that falls under op territory too
Minor Illusion is completely broken utility wise
Its always the same few you grab and that's mostly it
cantrips are hardly considered OP in general. Power of the spells is proportionate to their level and cantrips are level 0.
Minor Illusion falls under being pretty good but not op I'd say, mostly cuz its dependent on your DM
Its also something you could have grabbed along the way too rather than dedicating a feat to it
Also, remember, every time you take an origin feat at an ASI level, you're missing out on the opportunity to increase your stats
Which is why it's an option, but I definitely wouldn't recommend doing it every time
Question, how does Wild Shape calculates hp bonus? Is it based on Druid level or Character total level (counting other classes)?
Does the ability say your druid level or your level?
I have no idea what ASI means
Ability Score Improvement
You can only take feats at the character levels which say you can, or if something else specifically gives you them
ASI feats are the main way you make your stats better
If you have a zillion cantrips and terrible stats, you're generally not gonna have a great time
Hmm in the few times I've played I've never even noticed stats being a big factor for anything really
except for maybe hit points
Its nice to have more, half feats are really legit for that reason cuz you get something with the stats
Stats play into pretty much everything you do
Attacking, skills, spells, hp, initiative
Just enough to round out numbers, you don't actually want to push 20 for every important stat
I cant recall to ever have a stat influence any dice roll I ever made
That impression will likely change with more experience.
If you added a number to the die roll, that was affected by your stats
Ah I see, it's usually just a +2 or +3 so it feels neglectable
The only way you could have played D&D without your stats mattering is if you were only ever using the number on the die - which isn't how the game works
When your stats are bad, yes
If you have good stats and/or higher levels, it can make a much bigger difference
I've got characters with +19 to certain skills
why even roll a dice at that point
To see how high the number gets
For the very rare dc30 check, also funny
Normally your bonuses won't be that high, but it's an example of how stats very much do matter
If you never increase your stats and you're left with bad bonuses on everything, your character will simply be overall worse at functioning
Even if you have 12 cantrips
Your stats also determine things like spell attack bonuses and save DCs
Anyways Magic Initate's middle of the ground, you're really grabbing it for Find Familiar to scout or as a Cleric, to grab Thorn Whip/Absorb Elements/Goodberry
I think my characters started out with like 16 or 17 in my main stat, I dont see how maxing it out to 20 makes that much of a difference
You won't be grabbing it for the cantrips that's for certain
Or do half feats lol, why not round that 17 into a 18
Magic Initiate is a solid Origin feat. There's just generally not much reason to take it many times
Then why is there the option 😭
+3 to +5 is a 2 point difference. It can matter
And something being an option means it's exactly that, an option
If you want cantrips more than a stat bump, you can take MI more than once. But you should think about the opportunity cost of what you're not getting
It can also be good for the features that give you an extra origin feat, like Human or the Warlock invocation
The difference between a +3 and a +5 is a 10% increase!
Its like the Weapon Master feat, its just there even though its really bad
-sigh- Savage Attacker
-# I so badly want that feat to be better
Some feats are just more balanced than the others
well ill forget about my feats 1 hour into the campaign anyway
Yep, if you're like me and have trouble remembering active feats, passive ones are the way to go
I'll remember that for tomorrow, thanks for the explanations!
How do the initiative rols work ?
When the DM decides that combat begins, they ask for an initiative roll from all the players.
In order to roll an initiative roll, you'd roll a 20 sided die (1d20) and add your Dexterity modifier.
Then, everyone's turn order in combat is decided by who got the highest to who got the lowest.
And how do you you know if you hit it? Sry im very new and i dont really understand the rule book 😅
Hit what?
There's no "success" or "failure" in an initiative roll. It's just a roll that determines the order of turns in combat.
Ohhhhh
If you roll higher than others, you get to go first. If you roll lower than others, you have to go last.
1 more thing . How do the trows work for like the intelligence or the charisma check
Like those thing
If you want to do something, you tell your DM what you'd like to accomplish. If your DM thinks the task is difficult enough that it requires a check, they'll tell you what kind of roll you need to make.
Checks involve rolling a d20 and adding any relevant modifiers, based on what kind of check the DM is asking for.

Hey All!!!
Long time no see!
Hi everyone! I’m Sparkle.
I’m a total beginner, but I’m not just looking for a game—I’m looking for a group of friends.
Watching Stranger Things made me realize I want that "us against the world" feeling. I want to find a party where we can get into crazy trouble, share big emotional moments, and become a real team, just like the kids in the show.
I’m high-energy, ready to learn, and I promise to bring the heart if you’ll have me!
Looks like something good to put into #looking-for-dm

Thanks for posting this! I’m in the same boat and find this extremely helpful .
Me when my first ever D&D campaign found here's DM blocks and bans me without warning because I said I couldn't attend due to being in a bad mental state at the moment
I'm not gonna traumadump in this server but OH MY GOD am I pissed. If all D&D players are like this I swear I'll NEVER play again
Sorry to hear that happened to you. Hopefully you’ll find a better and more supportive group to play D&D with
Maybe : | I don't know why I bothered.
I was having so much fun, too. I was just having a bad day today and this dude blocks and bans me like?
Yeah that’s frustrating.
It is.
that I would dare say is an unique situation and highly unfortunate. my #1 rule is your health and family come before anything D&D related and EVERY person I talk to on this agree with that. Don't let one rare bad apple upset your gorgeous apple pie friend
oh wtf he banned us?
OH HE BANNED ALL OF US
oh thats all him, not you guys
well the sessions were postponed for all of january so maybe he got frustrated and pissed
even then he could've said something, a week of it being postponed was due to the giant snowstorm striking all of the USA
Sorry to hear this folks but please mind the server rules (don’t bring off-server drama here).
But perhaps you all dodged a bad DM
If anyone wants to do a run I'm up for it
oh yeah sure
If they can’t communicate reasonably then they probably won’t make a good DM anyway
Feel free to look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for games to join
well it was a huge shame, i was having loads of fun
the coolest part is, find you guys a better cooler funner group and keep havin a blast
yeah i hope so, thanks
i have made DOZENS of friends and 1,000's of memories because of D&D
not to mention my first campaign turned out like this
Hi chat
evenin ghoul. feel free to ask questions
Thank you gang, im just trying to send a couple messages to overcome the initial social anxiety lol
Hello
Ah I do have one question! How do I like know the general window of time a post looking for players is valid for? I've seen a couple I've been interested in joining that were posted only earlier today but they're all closed.
7 days is the server timer for a LFG post
