Hey everyone! I'm really new to dnd and looking to join a game on the weekends. Anyone know any resources to find campaigns I can join?
Where u from
Dang. I didn't even notice that channel. Thanks for the help!
People, remember you can search the channel in the top right to filter for time zone or day. It really helps narrow things down.
The looking for players channel, I mean.
The Astral Arms are part of the Way of the Astral Self subclass, which isn’t part of the PHB
damn
where i can find it?
The most recent publication of the subclass is in Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons though Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything also has it
thx
hloo i am new can someone help me out
Sure. What ya need there, by?
hey im new and i need help with starting an campain i have the heroes of the borderlands wilderness adventure and its says a region can last 60-90 minss but with me they always seem to last only for 15 mins i read the boxes provieded like how am i supose to add content
Part of the content will be added by players interacting within the environment around them. And there is a lot of improvising by the DM in response.
Just make a note of remembering what you improvise, players might bring it up later.
Usually the bulk of time is spent with the players trying out different things, "probing" the content you out before them. If they perceive that there is no element of interactivity, they may just choose to move on.
Combat is a major time-filler as well. It rarely lasts less than 30 minutes and often more than 45 minutes depending on number of combatants and pc level.
I've had combats last the entirety of a 3 hour session
though thankfully that is not too common
Hi, does anyone know how you go from a beginner to an intermediate player? I'd still categorize myself as a new player, but someone recently told me that I might be intermediate.
So, what should a new player know or know how to do before they're no longer considered a new player?
(if this doesn't fit here I dont mind moving it)
I'd say you're an intermediate player if you know how your characters' abilities work without needing to ask the DM and are actively considering the things that make the game fun for all.
Even if I still need to look up how my spells work, or what my class is capable of at new levels?
Everyone needs to look up things. If you look them up and afterwards understand how they work, I'd say you're intermediate.
maybe a more general idea of what most of the other classes do as well
Cool! Thanks for answering, this was informative
everyone needs to look things up sometimes
Yeah, that's quite fair
Like you don't need to know the specific number of rages a barbarian gets as their key ability at any given level when playing wizard, but you should know that it gives damage resistance and maybe the duration
always a good idea to skim the details of the other classes at the table if not super familiar with them so you can coordinate better
I'd say that's fair, both for combat and roleplay potential
I ran my first ever game and did about 3 sessions, and the two players got in a argument about each other's Role-playing and charcters and one refused to play with the other after. One kept complaining that the other was runing thier immersion by being too chaotic (I told them I didnt mind and had no idea what to do), very depressing.
I'm sorry to hear that. D&D is a social game, so it's important that the people that participate also keep that in mind. This sounds like multiple things probably went wrong. To that end, I can recommend reading through the Ensuring Fun for All section in the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics#EnsuringFunforAll
If one player announces that they're not having a hard time, it does to a large part fall to the DM to mediate.

Just an FYI the server doesn't like when people share age here
It'd probably be best to say

How do 39 Tigers fit in a Trenchcoat?!
I never said they're in a trenchcoat

If I want to buy a dnd like board game which should I buy?
To be clear, are you looking for a board game that approximates the feel of a D&D game or something else?
one deck dungeon is fairly interesting and has similar vibes
DnD with all the character sheets, same rules, same DM style and everything
But can it come as board game
Dungeons and Dragons
I'm not sure such a thing exists that isn't D&D itself.
So wait DND dosent have set like known campaigns?
just run it as a proper pen and paper TTRPG, maybe one of the dungeon crawl heavy modules/campaigns
Actually, the recent starter set, Heroes of the Borderlands, is very close to a boardgame (while still being D&D).
The DM makes a story? Or does he narrate or do both
D&D does have adventures, but it's not a board game in the traditional sense.
Is it possible to play online?

Yes, dnd provides campaign books and modules or the DM can come up with their own; but the DM narrates the story and plays the NPCs

Read the information in #learn-to-play as well as the 'Playing the Game' and 'Character Creation' chapters in the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) following along with the instructions in the second chapter to create a character as practice.
You can use (https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder) to make your first character as it comes pre-loaded with the free rules and will help walk you through the process as you follow along with 'Character Creation'. If you'd instead prefer a printable character sheet, those can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets#OfficialCharacterSheets
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers, and have your practice character looked over in #character-discussion to ensure your character follows proper character creation protocol.
There's a short interactive module here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en) to get an idea of the sorts of things you might encounter in gameplay, or you could seek out videos online of live gameplay examples or things of that nature.
Once you're ready, you can head over to #find-a-game to look for a group to join or can look on one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, your friendly local game store, or anywhere else games can be found.
How?
It is possible to play online. You might want to look at the "What is D&D" and "How does it work" links above.
?tag new online
how many spells can i have for a level 1 artificer
The game looks super cool but we watched the videos we get the rules but how to start playing is my concern
Are you all playing online?
I mean we can play irl and online
Okay. Are you the DM or is someone else?
Let’s say I am then?
Okay, so. The things you need for D&D: people, dice (which can be digital), character sheets (freely available online), the rules (also freely available online), and an adventure (whether one someone else made or the DM makes themselves). You gather together, either in person or via some communication platform like Discord or Google Meet or whatever. The DM narrates the situation, the players each decide how their character acts, dice are rolled to see if any actions with a chance of failure succeed or not, the DM narrates the results. Repeat!
from Forge of the Artficier or Tasha's Cauldron?
theres a difference?
all i know i get 2 cantrips
Yes, there's a difference.
uhhh which do people use more
I would bet more people currently use the 2014-compatible version since it's been out for longer, but I imagine the 2024 Forge of the Artificer version will eventually be more popular as new people will only be familiar with 2024 rules. Just a guess, though.
I'm not sure, but I do know that Forge of the Artficier is the updated one to better fit 2024 rules.
hmmm, i have +1 to Int modifier, online says i get number of int modifier + half my level rounded down so at level 1, i get 1 spell or 2 spells at level 1
That's a pretty low modifier for an artificer. Did you roll for stats?
yeah, i rolled really low, we did 7 4d6 and remove lowest
That's also already the first difference between the 2014 and 2024 artificer. 2024 has a fixed number of prepared spells, not dependant on the INT mod.
Ouch.
my highest is 15 and i put that to my wis, since im playing a neutral good wandering warforge
I don't think anybody answered you, but what you're looking for is D&D Starter Set: Heroes of the Borderlands
That has all your sheets dice characters and maps, ready to play in a single package box just like a board game
Where can I buy it?
But it's still the full D&D
Any board game/hobby shop or online
I think it would be 2 spells as from my understanding the "minimum of 1" applies to the number of spells gained from your player level
Amazon?
Probably
Alright thanks
Yeah it'll definitely be on Amazon actually, they're literally a bookstore
It's sold out on Amazon US, though it does have a listing there.
how many spell slots do i get
Might be country dependant, I can see a dozen listings in Australia, but idk how Amazon works in USA
Yep, very dependent!
2 level 1 spells slot as a level 1 character
oh, same number of spells i get
I couldn’t find it 💀
I might be blind or smt
It's currently sold out at Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Starter-Heroes-Borderlands/dp/B0FDJFR245
I'd check local game stores and also board game stores, perhaps some got a copy somewhere.
(support local businesses if possible, Amazon is bad etc.)
https://dndstore.wizards.com/us/en/product/1246473/heroes-of-the-borderlands-starter-set is a combination of both the physical and digital edition, can order from there it seems
There's a Tomb of Annihilation board game. Also a Temple of Elemental Evil board game. But those by default aren't intended to play as D&D. You can certainly use them alongside their campaign books and repurpose the themed minis and parts and whatnot. Keep in mind they are fairly old and kinda expensive.
Hey im new just started t get into d&d how is yall
Getting good with coffee
Is there any campaigns I can join?
Check #find-a-game
Ok
If I’m enjoying dnd (which I am) should I get the dungeon masters and monster manual rulebooks?
I eventually want to become a dungeon master but not for a while (However I have a coupon I can use to get both of those for $80 +tax at my local game cafe when I get paid end of the month)
I have the players handbook currently and it’s a lot of help so far
If you really do expect to be a DM, those are great resources, but they aren't strictly necessary.
Cool ty
Just make sure they are the same version as your player's handbook
Would say the starter set for $40 after coupon be a better starting dm set? And yeah my PHB is 2024 edition
Do you plan to run pre-written or mainly make your own?
I want to start learning pre written but eventually make my own (I am an author and would love to put a variation of my novels into a campaign one day)
Might be good to get the monster manual and the borderlands set, then get the DMG later. While not needed, the borderlands set has a number of tokens and maps that can be used for its own stuff, but also for future custom stuff
Plus, a chunk of the DMG is freely available: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
Awesome good to know
The reason I say the monster manual is because there are polymorph and wildshape and pet options that can make use of it as a player, not just being a DM.
Also, while making an adventure is tough, making creatures is even harder without a baseline.
And any pre-written adventure will cite stuff from the monster manual.
Awesome I appreciate all the help y’all are wonderful here and very welcoming to new players such as me it’s great
Hi guys, so my first time here, Im new in the dnd so dont, please, call me newbie cause I don't know so much about the topic, but Im here to try
That's why I really like the ToV game master's guide. Great instructions to build functional and fairly balanced things from scratch. Monsters, subclasses, etc.
A question to do the normal sheet about our beautiful character we use which dice?
Are you talking about rolling for stats? You use six-sided dice, but if you don't have a DM yet, you shouldn't roll for stats as most DMs would want to witness those rolls.
Why is being a newbie a bad thing? Is this some concept I'm too old to understand? Everyone is a newbie when they start. Sucking at something is the first step towards being kinda okay at something.
https://a.co/d/9A8k7xO does this one work too since the other one is out of stock
Okay thx

That's a different set.
Is it still same game and concept?
For the spell "hold person" it requires the targets to be humanoids but what if it's used in a target that has 2 forms on humanoid and the other is not would it work while they are in the humanoid form and disactivate if they are in the other form?
Yep, just a different adventure and coat of paint, essentially.
And different contents in the box. The rules and such are the same, though.
Basically, the stat block needs to say humanoid, regardless of form. However, different tables do things different, so your DM may handle things different from the book. As long as they keep things consistent.
Which, depending on the campaign, can be fairly few and far in between
Okay cool
If it's the borderlands set and the hellfire set, you could potentially use materials from both together too.
Hello dearest humans, I am very interested in DnD, barely watched any content and never played it before. Always looks like a heep of fun though, how do I get into it???

Here are some options. Pick one (or multiple, if you like)!
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
-# I would love it if you moved points 3 and/or 4 to the top
can anyone teach me how to get started and how to play plz
Thank you kind humans
Genuinely, I'll think about it. I think the lower the bar for entry, the better, and while I agree that the rules are fundamental, I know they scare folks off.
Appreciate the note, sincerely.
Rules indeed scare me
D&D, alas, is a game of rules.

How easy are psychic powers to put onto a character?
Cuz that’s my sona’s whole thing—if it’s hard to do I can just use Kazemi as a sword fighter or something instead-
Hello i got a question on something that confused me a bit.
What is the difference between armor training and armor proficiency for eg heavy armor training and heavy armor proficiency ? or are they the same thing but with different namings?
There are quite a few subclasses of a variety of playstyles that are themed around psychic powers. There are options for both martial and magical characters
Psi-Knight Fighter, Soulknife Rogue, Great Old One Warlock, and Abberant Sorcerer are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. There's probably more that I'm not remembering
Armor Proficiency is the outdated term for Armor Training. They mean the same thing, functionally.
Like half the classes have a psionic subclass
Great Old One Warlock
Soulknife Rogue
Psi Warrior Fighter
Aberrant Mind Sorcerer
etc
thats actually awesome okay cool
there's also the Psion class but it's still in playtesting, will likely come out with the Dark Sun book hopefully some time this year
Aberrant Mind Sorc as well
Hey I wanna start playing dnd but not with another website, like in a discord chat,ya know? Is that possible?
?tag new online
Dyno...
hm?
Yes, it is possible to play online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
yea like online without the website just like a dc chat
It's up to the table what websites are in use, whether it's just Discord or platforms like Roll20 and the like.
A way to communicate is pretty essential for D&D. Besides rolling dice and recording character info, everything else is optional.
i've run a campaign for like a year and a half using discord voice chat and people had their character sheets printed out as paper and rolling real physical dice, or were using dndbeyond and digital dice. it works, you just need to come up with a system that works for the table and the game. the hardest thing honestly was trying to figure out how to use maps via just discord, but i managed.
if discord had a whiteboard option like the old MSN messenger, it would have worked really well, honestly.
it does as one of the apps IIRC
nice. basically multiplayer MS Paint. incredibly rough compared to any other VTT, but it'll serve in a pinch
What are all the stats for classes in dnd
Do you mean the abilities each class has? You can read through them right here in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
You can go to dndbeyond and look up each class and what they give, as well.
That's not determined by a player's class.
Stats are generally determined by rolls when you first make a character, and depending a combination of your class and species and background/feats you pick, they alter certain stats.
Some classes, like sorcerer, benefit largely from one specific stat (in this case, charisma) when doing what they do. (In this case, Sorcerer's use Charisma for their spellcasting)
Health is decided by a constitution score, along with race and class
Attack damage is decided by your weapon and the corresponding core stat of the attack
-# Since rolled stats aren't usually recommended for new players, we generally try to point people towards the standard array in this channel
Ah gotcha.
Thx
No problem. Hope this answered your question a bit!
yea it's better that someone uses points, that 26-30 points to distribute so it's more done better
it's not like that health
Is it not?
health is decided by both the die you throw
so the die given by your class
and on top of that the constitution modifier
that is added
That’s what I said, no?
barbarian has 1d12 for pv, bard,warlock,sorcerer,monk,druid,ranger 1d8, paladin,warrior 1d10, mage 1d6
you said it's decided by the constitution you give
like the modifier is your hp
oh now i see
I said it was decided by constitution, race and class
I think that came across wrong due to my wording and emphasis on con but I thought it flowed better
you didn't specify i didn't see it earlier
okok
my bad
No problem!
i'm trying to use that submit looking for dm button for the bot but it's not submitting why?
The usual culprits are not having embeds enabled and not sending it in a channel. (Folks sometimes DM the bot instead of running the command in the server.)
You might try reinstalling your Discord client.
no...
it says i don't have permission to send messages in that channel
how do i run the command
there is a channel
You can run the command wherever you can type.
Run the command in this channel
Incorrect. The hashtag takes you to the channels. The command begins with a /.
bro i ain't talkin about the bot
scroll the channels down all the way down
see it yourself
the hashtag and slash takes it both to that channel
I think you're misunderstanding the problem that Eden was having. It wasn't about finding the channel, it was about where to post the command for that channel.
i don't seem to be able to type anything there and even whe clicking the hashtag looking thing nothing happens
yes this
post?
Step 1. Go to any channel where you can type.
Step 2. Type /looking.
Step 3. Highlight the channel you want to post in.
Step 4. Hit Enter.
Step 5. Fill out the form you're directed to.
Step 6. Hit Enter.
Glad you got it sorted!
This is probably a commonly asked question, but do newcomers have a harder time trying to find a game for the first time?
i lucked out and found a game same week i started searching
Hi there I really wanna play dnd for the first time can you help
Good for you, hopefully I can find something too
go to looking for players channel
hope it lasts some of my group members are really cool
Hmm, I'd say it honestly depends. The more you know, the better (obviously), but common pitfalls that some new players make are as follows:
- Unwilling to read up on the rules at all, prior to their first game
- Unwilling to budge on their dream character idea
- Pitch themselves as "bad at the game" because they're new, which certainly doesn't help their chances
try searching on the search bar
#find-a-game You'll want to read through the instructions on this channel first.
Thnx
That’s understandable and it makes sense. I do know a lot of the basic rules, but I’m still learning of course. For a character, I guess I don’t really have a “dream character” in mind yet. And I can’t say I’m bad if I’ve never played before.
As a newcomer, you will have a little bit more narrow options than an experienced player. Experienced players like to start their campaigns at higher levels, because the low levels often act as a tutorial of sorts. But its for that exact reason that its so important for newcomers to start at as low of a level as possible. So you should avoid joining campaigns that start at higher levels.
That’s what I was thinking. I’m thinking of starting out with a shorter basic adventure, or a one shot I think it’s called to help get me started and to at least get a feel of the basic rules and gameplay.
Yep, that's a good plan. Short adventures and one shots are a good way to dip your toe in the water and get a feel for things
I had a feeling, thank you for your help!
Lorewise how do people see warlock of actual gods that already have clerics... I know that would probably depend on the DM but is there any "official" answer
I don't think gods typically have warlocks? But for official lore discussions, we have #dnd-lore. They may know more.
Thx and for gods having warlockd i'm new but I'm pretty sure that the devs have said yes and when you look at examples of entities that can have warlock you would find some gods
Do you have an example in mind?
This was removed from the 2024 version of the class, but the 2014 description of Warlocks includes this snippet:
A warlock is defined by a pact with an otherworldly being. Sometimes the relationship between warlock and patron is like that of a cleric and a deity, though the beings that serve as patrons for warlocks are not gods.
Strange, as the Raven Queen notoriously has warlocks, from the lore. Lolth does as well, I believe.
Nonetheless, your Warlock's patron and their place in the world is something best asked to your DM.
You’re right, it definitely seems like something they went back on over time. It’s important to remember that this was written back when the only subclass options were Fiend, Fey, and Great Old One
Ello ello

Hi, I have some questions about the Paladin: Oathbreaker
I'm going to be the host of a short (3 sessions of 2 - 3 hours) campaign and we are all new to the game, but a player is excited to play this class. I looked it up and the Oathbreaker spells begin at level 3
There's some spirited debate around the oathbreaker being only for evil NPCs rather than being a player-facing option at all. So it's not a given that a player can pick this class.
So I assume it has to start as a normal paladin and then break the oath at some point? Just asking before they begin working on their backstory so i dont waste heir time
Oh...
Yea, the whole leaving religion to pursue a more evil goal is not too hero friendly
Right. You can allow it, of course, but whether they're just fallen paladins who had a moment of weakness or ones who intentionally chose evil is your call (with table input, probably).
Also note this channel is intended to help folks new to D&D get started with learning the core game rules and mechanics.
Oh. I'm sorry.
I thought it was for all general discussions between newcomers.
Ah no worries! Just noting the intent of this channel is to help get folks started with D&D
Thank you. I'll come back to the channel when I have a more appropiate question. I assume this goes into #dnd-discussion then?
I would probably suggest #dm-discussion myself.
For more DM support/feedback, and suggestions there’s #dm-discussion
Yeah I think this fits more of a DM discussion topic
Okay
Hope you and your friends have fun with your game!
Thank you
All this planning is making me sweat bullets
Remember that it's a game and the point is to have fun, not to get everything right (whatever that may mean)!
Yea, that's something i've seen mentioned in every video :o
I'm definitely taking it well, there's just so many nuances to take into account
Sure, but those will come with time and practice. Try to find the joy for yourself!
Thanks, i'm rly looking forward to it :D
Mind if I ask you one more thing related to my original question? On the dm channel this time :p
Sure, see you there.
Hi everybody!! I have question.
can u play campaign that says its for 2-3lvl (The Wolves of Welton) with lvl 1 newbies?
You can, but it's balanced for a higher level group, so it might end with the party dying. Why not use A Most Potent Brew, which is for level 1?
My friends asked for a campaign that is set in wilderness (In the forest)
Is Potent Brew like that?
Nope, but neither is a campaign; those are one-shots.
ye I meant one-shots sorry.
If anybody knows about good one-shot set in wilderness for lvl 1

In the CANTRIPS & PREPARED SPELLS section of the character sheet,
Can I have spells of a higher level than I? like for when i eventually level up or can i not even slot them in unless I'm at the appropriate level?
You can't learn a spell until you have the ability to cast it
If you want to plan ahead, that's fine, but you don't have a spell prepared until you actually get to the level with those spell slots and choose it (or do wizard spellbook things to get it)
Thanks ❤️
It depends on how you gain that spell. For example, if you're learning spells through your class, every class has something like this written into its rules:
Changing Your Prepared Spells. Whenever you gain a Bard level, you can replace one spell on your list with another Bard spell for which you have spell slots.
So For example, a level 1 bard cannot prepare Aid, even though Aid is a Bard spell, because Aid is a 2nd level spell and a level 1 Bard only has 1st level spell slots. However, if you learn spells through other means, then you follow whatever rules it says in those other means. For example, if you're playing in a game that uses the 2014 rules, its possible for a level 1 character to gain the Fey Touched feat, and part of that feat is that your character learns Misty Step. So even though Misty Step is a 2nd level spell, its still possible for a level 1 character to know it. They wouldn't be able to cast it through their own spell slot though, until they gain 2nd level spell slots.
hey guys I am a new DM and was hoping someone could help me with combat encounters for a one shot I am running? The party is level 8 but I have no idea if the monsters I want to use are too powerful for them or too weak.
t-rex inhabited by an intellect devourer.
likely that's too high of a CR, but imagine their faces when they run into that thing
#dm-discussion is the main channel for that kind of advice since it's DM focused and you'll likely get more answers there. This one is more for absolute beginners
I could not find a general or a goofy channel, so I'm putting it here

Not really a Newcomer but I haven't played in 3 years, I had an idea for a new character but I don't know if the mechanics work like I remember
Wasn't there a spell or skill that allows me to place a rune on an item and put a spell into the rune?
you might be thinking of the Glyph of Warding spell or the Rune Carver background/Rune Shaper feat from Glory of the Giants
Is it possible to spectate someone's game?
Was it possible to change the spell type of the glyph? I remember someone using fireball on a glyph I think. And the next question would be what is the condition for the glyph to activate?
technically yes, although I'm not sure if people would be willing to let that happen
According to the 2024 rules a Glyph of Warding can either be a Spell Glyph or Explosive Rune.
Spell Glyphs can have a 3rd level+ spell prepared into it, as long as it is a either an AOE or has a singular target.
The spell description also states that you decide what the trigger is when casting the Glyph.
I'd assume that the 2014 version would be pretty similar
If I remember correctly you can't move the item with the rune too far away from the casting spot right?
Would I theoretically be able to make a Barbarian Wizard hybrid that Inscribes Explosive glyphs of warding onto big sticks to basically boomstick my enemies?
Guys idk where to start on some faruen map
10ft from the casting spot is how far the glyph can be moved without triggering, otherwise it goes off on the caster's chosen trigger
10 feet sounds enough to bonk my enemies
Could you be more specific, I don't quite understand what you're asking.
I'm a new player
yea, unfortunately it has a casting time of 1hr
Me and my friends wanted to play dnd so we made a board(yeah I'm so broke I cant even afford a starter pack)
It was like the tutorial said that we make squares on a paper is it correct
Not that I'm aware of, but someone somewhere probably has.
Yo 1 quesiont I dont know how to start
Have you read the basic rules?
which book?
You can do that, you don't have to, the free rules on dndbeyond is enough to start playing
?
I download vecna one from scribd too
Vecna: Eve of Ruin?
Ye
I haven't read that one, so I won't be much help on answering questions about it
Have u watch stranger things?
No, Stranger Things isn't something that interests me
Didnt like it at first thot it was trash until a friend begged me to watch I completed 2 days ago I was like DAYUMMMMM
Bye gotta sleep it's almost 5am for me
Yo
hi
I want to go in a game got any place for me?
#looking-for-players is probably what you're looking for, unless you want to be a DM at which point you want #looking-for-dm
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
in the character maker section of dnd beyond there are some things to check or uncheck whitch ones should i check for a 5e character:
Homebrew
Character options designed by other players and uploaded to D&D BEYOND. Talk to your DM before including Homebrew content.
Core Rules
Character options from the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Monster Manual, and D&D Beyond Basic Rules.
Expanded Rules
Character options from supplementary sourcebooks beyond the Core Rules.
2014 Core Rules
Character options from the 2014 Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, and Basic Rules.
2014 Expanded Rules
Character options from supplementary sourcebooks such as Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, that are beyond the 2014 Core Rules.
Legacy/Noncore
Character options from older sources that may conflict with the Core Rules. These include sources that are out of print or created for charity.
For simplicity keep only Core Rules and Expanded Rules checked on
Homebrew as the category says is up to DM approval, as is the use of 2014 / Legacy content
I am completely new to dnd and I really want to get into it. Is there any tips to starting as someone who’s never touched a dnd game only watching media such as critical roles yt channel and their series like mighty nein.

So I am new as well… trying to get my husband into dnd as well so we can do it together I want to make a back story and my own character is it socially acceptable to use google Gemini for that? That’s a way for me to ask about all races and types in one place so my adhd brain can comprehend it
You can but remember our server rules - you may not post AI generated work on our server
I tried on the app and it’s too much information for me
I’d recommend starting with the free basic rules to start
Okay
thank you this helps a lot
also do you have any tips on convincing people to play dnd with you I have a good sized friend group i want to play with but there not interested at all
“Hey do you want to try a role playing game with me?”
Maybe watch a livestream D&D game with them so they can get a feel for how fun (and crazy!!!) a game can be.
what is the main thing that 2014 adds
Content from the 2014 version of the 5e ruleset
For example, the option to select the 2014 version of the Fighter class. The game versions are generally compatible with each other but a few things need adjustments to ensure full compatibility. It's also a lot easier to port 2014 content to a 2024 game than to port 2024 content to a 2014 game.
im very new and my dm is very new would it be best just to leave it out (do most people use 2014 or do they use the updated version)
?
also does the sage background allow you to choose 2 other cantrips and 1 lv1 spell on top of the 3 cantrips and 6 lv 1 spells to start?
Your game will be running one of the 2 rulesets, and it's up to the DM to decide. Starting out I recommend the 2024 version since it's the newest and relatively easy to port content forward if you happen to own/have access to old 2014 content.
The 2024 Sage background gives you the Magic Initiate (Wizard) Feat, which does give you extra spells on top of the normal starting ones you get for being a Wizard
Hi everyone! 100% new to dnd and i have a question... could someone explain in super simple terms how to fill out the spellcasting sheet for my character? or look over to see if ive even done it correctly?
I can look over it!
But you choose out however amount of spells the class lets you
Can i send you a dm?
Sure
so that means you can have 5 cantrips and 7 1st spells?
If you're a wizard and take that background, yes
Finally grew enough courage to take the first step in all of this. I'll figure out the rules later but before I come back to deep-dive into it. Is there something I should have prepared ahead of time? Like a character sheet or something? (I intend to approach D&D with a player mindset before I try my hand at DM work.) If so, where can I find a character sheet? Is there a universal one that's applicable?
If you wanted to look for players for your game check out #find-a-game !
how does tgat work
The instructions are contained within the channel
So, you can create a charter sheet online, but I've heard that it's usually better for you to learn the rules if you write out the sheet yourself.
ah, gotcha. Rules first, then the sheet. What D&D edition is most common, and where can I find the rules behind that?
The most effective thing you can do to prepare ahead of time is to have a good familiarity with the Basic Rules. You don't always have to have a character prepared but it helps to have an idea of what you want to play.
The official 2024 5e character sheet is found here:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/phb/downloads/DnD_2024_Character-Sheet.pdf
As for the free Basic Rules, they're linked in #learn-to-play as well as this channel's pins. Otherwise here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
I recommend reading through the first 2 chapters "Playing the Game" and "Character Creation" at the very least. Take your time and feel free to ask any questions you have along the way!
Well THIS jumpstarts me a whole bunch. Thank you very much fellow JOAT!
what is faith? I was looking on the character builder and got to faith it dosent have a drop down and i havent heard of it before.
My oldest brother said to watch viva la dirt league as a good start, is he right?
It's mostly a humor shorts although I believe they do record their D&D campaign. I don't know about their campaign but have seen some of their amusing shorts.
They have 'entire campaign episodes'
Faith refers to your character's actual faith, whether that be to a specific deity or spiritual belief. You don't have to put anything there if you don't want to.
That aren't shorts
They do have shorts. Again I can't speak to their D&D campaign stream/shows.
Ok, thx :> im just gonna binge watch it all
anyone know what faith is? is it manditory?
Your character might not follow a single deity/pantheon's teachings super closely, or may worship many casually in day-to-day life (e.g. a small prayer to Tymora before gambling, a small prayer to Silvanus before harvesting crops, etc.). They may not believe the gods worthy of worship, or maybe religion has never played an important role in their life.
I replied to your original question here: #dnd-newcomers message
D&D shows I can speak to are Critical Roll (high-end production values now days, very tight-knit group, some pretty epic campaigns, not family friendly), Oxventure (initial campaign was nice and silly, newest Wyrdwood campaign is much more dark fairy-tale vibes and serious), and Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim campaign (good example of a homebrew campaign, stays close to core game rules/mechanics outside of homebrew setting with some magical items).
thanks i missed that
it didn't highlight for some reason 🤷♂️
also what is lifestyle and why wouldn't you pick the max amount of gp instead of nothing?
That's how much you're spending, not how much you earn
spending on what
Spending on living that quality of lifestyle
so it doesn't really do anything or what why wouldn't you pick wretched because you don't have to pay anything
Rent, basically
If your character is the kind of person who would sleep in a stable with the horses in order to pinch a penny, then sure, you can live the wretched lifestyle
If your character prefers the finer things, then the finer things don’t come cheap
Think of it as a roleplay prompt rather then an actual mechanical feature - it's something to make you think on how you'd play that character, what kind of settings they'd prefer to be in, how they might act around poverty or riches.
gotcha
Why is it so gosh darn hard to get a game going for Dungeons and Dragons. Whether online or in-person?!?!?
Requires bunch of people to have the matching schedule to play few hours each week consistently, and for someone to take on the role of a DM when there's a lot more people wanting to be players
getting someone who is willing to write and run months or years worth of story telling, is hard. and yea also what they said ^^
Sad but true so far. My local game store runs their own D&D campaign and everything. Running and scheduling it all through discord. It's a sound system, easily the best form of managing I have seen. But yeah ATM I am bronze rank lvl3 adventurer with a musket, the campaign uses 5th edition PHB and Expanded, YET no one in my literal city has bit so far for the quest I want to take. I am the big sads, all I want to do is go American revolutionary war on kobolds, goblins and other magical creatures. Is dat too much to ask?
How do you choose a Patron for your Warlock? Is the patron going to be an entity that's in-story for the DnD book you use, or is it going to be an entity that you make up yourself?
It can be both, but USUALLY it's a patron you pick from the players hand book or expanded books
Following your own would be a homebrew
it can be either, i imagine it depends on the dm
yea ^^
You pick it at level 3 as part of taking a subclass
they can possibly be involved in the story as much as you and your DM want it to be
Oh shoot that too
Hello guys
I recommend starting by picking a patron from an official book, but as long as your patron fits one of the categories (and it wouldn't be Undying because it SUCKS ASS) you can go with practically anything as long as your DM allows. You can even mash up patron/subclass categories
hello AnormalpilotSFS
Generally you take one of the options and either use one of the existing entities that fit that option or you can write your own c:
If it doesn't mechanically change anything, it's generally allowed
GASP WE CAN SWEAR HERE!? THANK THE GODS!
What is happening guys?
Ranting and raving about D&D
No you can't really
Dammit!
Oh ok
Not much anyway
does the sage background get a skill proficiency of choice other than history and arcane
I just shoot things with my musket and eat what I shoot.
fallout cannibal perk ^^
valid
Bro you must be psychic that is literally what I am using on my current run in New Vegas! I'm replaying as a tribal basically. The bullet to the head made me factory reset. I Kill all White legs!
THATS SO WONDERFUL
my last new vegas run was a speedrun to crack benny…
i think i did it in an hour
Heheheh nice. Cass doesn't care for it, but shockingly Boone doesn't mind at all. I think he chuckled when I ate some legion on Cottonwood Cove.
SAME!!!!!
does the sage background get a skill proficiency of choice
We just slaughtered the fiends, and I gotta say, giving him that anti material rifle was the highlight of my day.
OH SHOOT SORRY! Far as I know only when you get to level 3
But yes you should be given a handful of options
Every other level up you can increase your skill proficiency
I learned that the hard way
interesting in the character builder it says a skill proficiency: history and then there is a drop down of all the skills?
wish i could send a screen shot
How do I make a character sheet
Grab the PDF (https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/marketing/dnd_5e_charactersheet_formfillable.pdf) and follow the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character).
It gives you the proficiencies it says it does
One of those might be a choice
Or D&D Beyond may be defaulting to a choice if you already have the other one, even though that's not a rule in 2024 (it is for 2014)
Which is probably the case since Sage should get Arcana and History
Does anyone have any tips for making a character decently quick?
Idk if it’s because I am new and just learning but it took a good 2 hours to make my character in my campaign I just started I was going back and forth all throughout the players handbook from table to table in different parts of the book (don’t get me started on choosing spells that was a nightmare and a half)
Anyways if anyone has any tips to speed things along I would appreciate it
I am considering just finding premade characters and modifying slightly on my own character sheet and or just not play magic classes lol again the spells are a pain to find and write down and remember what they do
Maybe like I said it’s because I’m brand new would it get quicker with more practice?
Thanks
I've been playing for just over five years now, and I do find making spellcasters takes me longer unless I go with a kind of baseline spell selection. In other words, for certain classes, I have a short list of spells I'll pick from that I know I like rather than going through all of the options.
That aside, I think not being precious about character creation can be a good attitude to cultivate. Sure, they're all special and cool, but I think the more you learn to generate concepts, the easier it becomes. For me, it starts with species or classes I haven't gotten to play or finding fun overlaps (like there are a lot of fey-themed subclasses, so they'll fit a fey species nicely).
i didn't get arcana from the background prof but i also got arcana from the wizard prof dose it cancel out and i get only 1 prof of the 2
Kk Ty
I will try and find guides online for recommended starting spells because honestly it was such a pain going back and forth through the whole spell list and my class spell list that I just jury rigged some clumsy abilities together that just sounded decent just to get out of that section and it still took me about 2 hours rushing to make my bard
I am almost pushed away from wanting to do another campaign after this or a one shot as I hated character creation that much
I see people online saying how much fun it is to make different characters and I can’t see any enjoyment in the actual process of making a new toon
I enjoy playing once it’s made though I find the gameplay loads of fun just not preparing for it
Like most skills, you get faster with practice!
My friend group wants to play D&D and I've always wanted to but never had a group, and they assigned me as the dungeon master. This is my first time ever playing and I'm like extremely stressed and I need like a lot of guidance so could any experienced dungeon masters dm me and help me
Do tiefling barbarians have a spell class?
Spellcasting doesn't mix with barbarian rage, but there is the wild magic barbarian subclass.
when you have multiple of the same proficiency bonus do you only get one of the two for example if i have proficiency bonuses in arcana from my class: wizard and my background: sage do i get a +4 or only +2 (im level 1)
The bonus is only applied once.
@twilit kernel oh crap you said Sage! Yeah that's my bad I don't play Sage.
Or just take a different skill proficiency from wizard
Since doubling up doesn't help you or let you rechoose by default 2024 rules
You're unlikely to get anyone willing to message you and help one on one, but you can ask for advice in #dm-discussion
I just taught myself through YouTube videos. Then it derailed me to learning about Critical Roll
My general advice for new DMs is start with a simple premade adventure, hydrate, remember that the goal is for everyone to have fun including you and it's okay to say no
Actually that does bring up a question I have.
Is it okay for a DM to include themselves in the party with a suto character? Like the DM playing a character that is temporarily or permanently paired with the gaming party?
Temporarily, I'd say that's fine. Emphasis on temporary. For a whole campaign, not so much.
Not recommended. Maybe a helpful NPC but not a full character
We call it a DMPC, and yeah they’re contentious
Wouldn’t recommend
Because they are also running the game yeah?
Yep. It'd be like the ref playing on one of the teams.
Yeah. It's both a lot more to track and difficult to play like you don't know everything
Golly that does sound unfair when you put it like that
Granted, players and DMs aren't playing at odds, so it's a little overstated but that's only to make the point!
k ty
Generally when the players adopt an NPC this is okay but a straight self-insert is generally not great
Anyone have a dice roll bot?
From what I know about playing DM, all you really need is the Players Hand Book 5th edition, the Dungeon Master Handbook and the Monster book
Playing DM is you basically being God, the rule maker of the setting.

There are premade adventures you can use as a base to start DMing, following the prompt only for the party to derail it into something else. Which can happen and it's usually funny
Like, a dice roll system that Roll20 or D&D Beyond has?
Yeah,but for a dc server
A bot
If it's discord, Avrae is the common one
aight leme go search it up on yt
I never heard of discord having one. Neat!
not necessarily dnd,i js need a dice bot for other purposes😭
I'm making a character sheet is there any other way to that ability scores increase other than the background?
5e vs 4e players handbook? i want to get one just copies of 4e are soooo much cheaper
DnD 4e is an entirely different game than DnD 5e. If you want to play what most people are playing nowadays, you'll want the 5e handbook.
On the bright side, though, you technically don't need the handbook at all. You can play DnD completely free using the free Basic Rules.
ty!! i'm just big on physical books and stuff so wasn't sure if the extra money for 5e was worth it/that different from 4e
Yes but that won't happen till you reach a certain level
i appreciate the insight
This is probably a dumb question but if your having fun and can role play reasons for it is it terrible to have low stats? My farmer bard has -2 dex and -1 int yet has +3 charisma at lvl 1 he has low armor and 11 health
But I play him as a simple minded farm boy who is a bit clumsy on his feet but has good intentions and left his farm to go on an adventure as a musician after winning the talent show in his village
Really bad stats but really fun to play
if i get multiple of the same equipment from the class and background do i only keep 1 and discard the other
could anyone teach me how to play dnd?
i like stranger things so i might as well like this
that's why i started too tbh!! started my first campaign today and im having sm fun
Avrae add to your own discord server.
do you keep multiple of the same item
You'd keep both.
so what do you do with it usually? just curious
Sell the extra generally
to where?
is there like a designated place to sell or can you just sell it when ever like on dnd eBay
Depends entirely on the DM and the campaign. Most towns are generally expected to have various stores in them, and you're likely to be able to sell any stuff worth selling
That would be up to your DM. If you're in the middle of the dungeon, you're probably not going to have anywhere to sell something. If you're in the middle of a town, that's a different story!
where do you add extra resistances for example dragon born has fire resistance
Wherever it fits and you'll remember it
Hey. Is there any DMs that would be willing to add 2 noobs into the campaign? Me and ny BF jus started getting interested in it and we are currently trying to learn. Also only on of us has limited experience in like. Roleplay.
is dnd depends on luck?
Largely

I'd recommend reading the free Basic Rules linked in the bot post above. The Playing The Game section explains everything very nicely!
Yes and no, depend of which side you want to be.
IF you wnat to be a dm, it take A lot more of effort but its worth
If you want to be a player then you have to learn a bit less, but still something.
Dont be shy to ask, dont be shy to be creative inside of some limits and most importantly, have fun with your team, its a team game at the end of the day
is the dnd beyond version of the character sheet and the "dungeons and dragons" version the same iteration of dnd the sheets just look different and also do you leave out things that the dnd beyond version leaves out for example the weight of all your equipment?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players to see what's available here. Though I recommend searching in a variety of places if possible
D&D Beyond is really just a different style. Ignoring equipment weight is an option there, but that's more up to your DM. It's not the default in the rules.
There are a bunch of different versions of the character sheet floating around. It doesn't really matter which you use as long as it has all the information you need.
And always go back to the actual rules text over a character sheet as the source of truth.
is all the core info in the dnd beyond website
Yes, D&D Beyond has the free rules there and also sells access to the books
Hello
But you do have to know what settings you're picking and what sources your DM allows when making characters. There are things DDB will allow you to do when building characters that aren't legal or don't work right just cause of how the coding works
So it's important to also know your character's features
I’m here to learn how to play the game and tips on how to start if anyone can give me tips please

Thank you
Start with those links and the basic rules
i did the character maker thing on dnd beyond and it gave me a crossbow for some reason but i didn't see it in my equipment section of the character builder?
I'm not super familiar with the DDB process since I don't use it for character building but it might have been starting equipment for your class
Depending on the options you chose
yeah it doesn't include any cross bow within the wizard class or sage background
weird
No idea then. You can probably delete it if it shouldn't be there
where do you put the race ability's, my race: dragon born has a fire breath ability where would i write that?
I assume you're looking at this sheet?
https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf
It would go into "Features and Traits"
If there is no space left there, put it into "Additional Features and Traits" on page 2.
yeah that's what i assumed 👍
what's the difference between the arcana focus quarter staff and the regular quarter staff?
The staff arcane focus can also be used as a quarterstaff, but a regular quarterstaff cannot be used as an arcane focus.
so the arcana focus is better
Assuming you don't yet have one, yeah, one of those is good to have as a wizard.
Think of it sort of like a catalyst for some of your spells.
ive had a few people tell me ive wasted my fighting style feat choosing dueling because the flat +2 damage isnt worth not using a 2 handed weapon but like i feel like its increidbly wrong?
im using a mixture of versatile weapons 1 handed so they are 1d8+7 with addition of the 2ac from the shield but like i dont see why i would ever want 1d10+5 because even if we crit since the way were doing it in the campaign im in it would be 2d8 + 14 unless theres something im missing future wise i dont see why dueling is a terrible choice?
im going to be going into champion fighter if that helps
Well we have #optimization if you're looking for crunching hard numbers, but beyond that don't mind what others think about being optimal, and just do what you think is fun or cool 😛
im not trying to be optimal
im just trying to understand if im like overlooking or missing something
Then don't mind anyone telling you you're wasting your features 😌
And the channel I linked can help you with that. This definitely goes into number crunching, and either way isn't really a newcomer topic
For what it's worth, I also don't see anything wrong with your decision, it's merely a matter of preference.
alright ty
Anyone wanna join my party (I'm the dm btw)
sure I'm kinda new to dnd
Fyi, we are asked to do group finding using the #find-a-game channels.
Hi guys
Welcome
Again see #find-a-game , soliciting for games outside of those channels is against the server rules
I don't really understand the channel I've only been here for like 30 minutes
It would be nice if you would explain
Did you actually read it? and if so which parts are giving you trouble, we can definitely help here
You should read what the channel has written. It's not a chat channel, it contains instructions
That's a lot of words tho bruh
Welcome to D&D, there's gonna be a lot of text 😏
Dang
Type

working on my character......Jeeezz alot of options
Yep, it can be quite overwhelming! Let us know if we can help illuminate something.
hello i have created a campaign and is going to conduct it in my school tommorow
i dont have the dices
so i am using 4 ,6 sided dies
a little frustrating
Can you use a mobile phone there?
You can use online dice rollers. Even Google: type "roll d20" and it will.
It can quite overwhelming with the options, I also had the feeling of being overwhelmed for my first time playing.
Hallo i want to start the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Kampagne as a newby to dnd and a dm for 4 Friends who are also new to dnd I habe the physical Box and I’m overwhelmed with everything in it I tried to get the online Variante on dndbeyond but Don’t get it where to find it. Help pls
As a Dm*
Are you going to play online, like over voice chat, or in person?
What's the difference between background feature & characteristics?
the background feature is another ability your character might have, like giving you the chance to do more damage, or giving you more skills/tools to be proficient in.
And I'm not quite sure what you mean by characteristics
In the character creator for dnd beyond, there's
Background feature:
&
Background characteristics:
Hi guys, pretty new to dnd, trying to make war cleric but its unavailable on dndbeyond. Is there any free character creator out there for 2024 edition?
Ah right, so the Background feature is along what I previously described, while the Background characteristics are your character's Personality Traits, Ideal, Bond and Flaw.
If you're playing with 2024 rules I wouldn't worry about the characteristics too much as that as mostly been removed
My character is a royal/noble dragonborn, but after his family turned dark & evil, he decided to go to the middle of nowhere & purge his memories of family, status, and almost every cantrip & spell that he learnt, which then leads to him coming across & joining the respected group of whatever campaign im playing. Do you think haunted one is a good background feature for him? (I summed up the backstory)
Thx
This is the official DnD discord server, so while there probably is, we cannot encourage you to do so.
What is the description part of the "custom background" origin in the dnd beyond character creator?
The easiest way is pen and paper
Exactly but there is only the Option to buy it but I allready Owne it yk
I want to Play in Person with some Friends I have a old tv that I lay down on a table to Display the Maps
But I don’t get the Maps becouse i don’t get how I get to the contents out of dndbeyond becouse i already have a physikal Copy
Everything you buy offline so from a store is not included in DND Beyond, you need to buy it from there.
I have to pay extra?? 😭😭😭
Yes, it's one of the unfortunate things if you want both physical and digital copies of dnd books legitimately
Yep, DND beyond is not responsible for vendors outside of their store. If you want digital copy then you need to buy it from DND beyond itself
Hi guys sorry for interrupting how do I play DnD and make a character ?
Just to be courius is there a way to get the Maps without getting this Heavy on my Budget i don’t think its Great that I already have it and just becouse I want it online I have to pay heavy
Perhaps google if maps are available for this campaign, but then again if you want to play it online then you should've bought it digitally;
I will Look its not to Play online but thanks for the help
While there will be ways to, we cannot encourage it on this server.
hey guys im an absolute noob but i just finished my first character sheet. i really wanna get into dnd cos majority of the games ive played took HEAVY inspiration from dnd so i thought why not just try the original thing myself
Great to hear, welcome to the hobby. Making characters for practice is a great start.
it was a TON of numbers, but luckily for me im a nerd who likes number stuff
but I made a tiefling rogue called elissa. tiefling because i think the devil human thing is really cool, and rogue because i really enjoy problem solving
The tiefling aesthetics are certainly neat, I like playing them. They don't have to be "human" + "devil" either. You could imagine a dwarf + devil, elf + devil and so forth.
I will 100% remember that for my second character
hell yeah
Or even x + demon or x + literally any fiend
Could scan them from the books.
I'm in the same boat. Also a newcomer, have never played D&D and have never made a character. Have played dozens of RPGs though, many of which that took inspiration from the tabletop game such as Wizardry, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy etc
I was hoping that someone could assist me in making a character. Something along the lines of asking me a question, giving me a series of choices and then I select one and if it conflicts or is not allowed they will tell me so and I will change my answer. Also, any feedback that lets me know that I'm making a suboptimal or not great choice would be cool
one thing i constantly think about when playing those games is what the creator of the first elder scrolls game julian lefay (rest in peace) said about it, "a video game can only mimic a mediocre dungeon master".
and i get what he means. theres a lot more when theres another human with you making the story as you go along
I tried playing a game called Everweave which is essentially an AI generated Dungeons & dragons play through and it was fun
Unfortunately, too many people join daily to teach folks one-on-one. Sometimes you can find tutorial sessions at local libraries or on Start Playing. Otherwise, there's the learn-to-play sessions offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab).
Folks here are generally happy to answer specific questions, though!
honestly i just resorted to premade characters as a base and added onto it. i think knowing WHAT i wanted to be isn't the hardest part, but knowing how to fit it in the rules is what's more difficult
Well, your starting point is species, class and background. No wrong choices here, hit up the Free Rules and take your pick.
Human, fighter, former soldier turned mercenary is basically what I went with
Fighter
Master all weapons and armor
Fighters rule many battlefields. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 14
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 10
Cha. 12
Likes: Weapons
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
Then you pop your bonus ability score points from Soldier on the top. With us so far?
Yes
Cool. You'll also mark up some skills as proficient from your background and class.
It all makes sense and I like the stat spread. It makes sense based on what I know about what I'm supposed to have. Charisma looks pretty high but I'm not going to question. If I could put anything into intelligence I would.
I believe I selected Great Weapon skill
Swap Charisma and Intelligence around if you like, it makes no difference to your features at this stage.
Ok
Honestly, I could see why charisma would benefit the fighter if it allows me to do things like intimidate to increase the likelihood of landing attacks etc blah blah blah
-# Personally, I would swap the Dex and Con scores there, but everyone will do it differently. There's no real wrong way here, just preferences.
A fighter gets the following:
Choose 2: Acrobatics, Animal Handling, Athletics, History, Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion, Perception, or Survival
And soldier adds Athletics and Intimidation. You don't get to pick the same twice so don't worry, you'll have four skill proficiencies total.
I think it's perfect, just subtract 2 from Charisma and put into Intelligence.
Okay, originally I chose acrobatics and athletics but I considered substituting acrobatics for animal handling which makes sense especially if I am only Going to be so mobile.
Having animal handling in a whip I thought would work well together
Last in terms of mechanics is starting equipment. Listed in your class and background sections, you can either take the package offered, or take the gold and assemble your own gear.
I will now leave you to my learned colleagues as I have to walk in the rain.
I would rather take the gold and assemble my own gear.
What I'm hoping for is a short range, mid-range, and long-range weapon for diversity, preferably each one offering some kind of debuff or status ailment effect
I believe I selected something like battle axe, whip, and longbow.
Yeah stuff that inflicts debuffs are mostly only present on magical items
Good news, fighters get a couple of weapon masteries that enable special effects. You can find details of what does what here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#MasteryProperties
Weapon Mastery can, in the 2024 rules.
does a hermit work as a background with a rogue?
And if I recall correctly, masteries on a fighter can be switched on a long rest so you're not stuck with something forever.
i honestly dont really care about "optimising characters for the best skills" i mostly just wanna make my own character fit into a specific story
If you know the rules in the main, look for a group. Read through #find-a-game!
Sure, can do. Maybe you got chased out of town and had to lie low for a while on your own.
Or perhaps you grew up in an isolated area and later found your natural talents suitable for rogue life, who knows?
my idea was that my character suffered a form of amnesia and they woke up in an isolated area away from civilisation. due to this, they've preferred to work things out for themselves. eventually, as it is the way of civilisation, they eventually must mingle with society, even if it meant not knowing the societal "rights and wrongs" which led them down a life of thievery and legal persecution which is how they've become a rogue. because of this, that's why they prefer to be on their own, while occasionally having to return to society hidden
basically just spitballing but hey might as well work on my storytelling
Sure, that can work. What makes them go adventuring?
wait imma write this down in a notepad cos why not but one idea that comes to mind is that in their directionless meandering around the cities, they stumble onto someone who has a task for them (perhaps killing pests or going into a dungeon to retrieve treasure for them) and because they ultimately have no other purpose in their life that basically began for them, mercenary work and adventuring has become the only thing to give them a sense of direction in life
ive been learning a lot about kierkegaardian existentialism so i thought hey, why not incorporate that a bit
Alright! So maybe they do these tasks because gold can be exchanged for goods and services, better stuff than the forest life provides, or maybe they see that they're making a positive change in folks' lives and wants to do that more. It's all possible.
Don't forget, #character-discussion is always open.
cheersss
but from what ive been reading in the handbook, it seems like 90% of it all comes down to what the dungeon master prefers, which honestly takes a load off my chest to know i can be kinda flexible with the rules
On some level. Personally, I think a good DM will work with the table to establish norms and expectations so it's not just "Here's how things are" dictated from on high. But you do find all sorts in the hobby!
If you stick with the Free Rules and later the Player's Handbook you'll generally be fine, and backstory is pretty much up to you. Once you get a game and an idea of the setting you'll be playing in you can add more specific details.
i am planning to try solo playing cos i have no friends.. (awake right now cos its like 11pm)
Just a heads-up, D&D isn't meant for solo play, so it'll be sort of lacking. That said, folks have made workarounds. For resources in how to play solo, look into supplements like DM Yourself (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/331912/dm-yourself-solo-roleplay-for-5e-d-d-and-osr-adventures) or The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/252355/the-solo-adventurer-s-toolbox). Besides the D&D rules themselves, of course.
can new comers play dnd or do they have to be god tier at knowing the game cause i got somewhat idea of the game and i used chatgbt help to understand and learn how to play ?
Newcomers can definitely play D&D.
im aware, its just to understand the ins and outs of how the systems works (and hey maybe ill get a cool story out of it that i can use in the future)
I would definitely not recommend using something like chat GPT to learn DnD though. It's notoriously very frequently wrong about rules.
hmmmm
hello, where do i find game to play? i am new. used to txt rp a lot back in the day.

Rules are only a few pages long and is free, no need for AI to shorten it further
Follow the bot post above to the Looking for Game/Group info!
then all my info are wrong
Alternatively there's vids
Instead, I think the best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked here. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
honestly another reason i really wanna get into dnd is to use as influence for my own writing. im not like a professional writer but i occasionally do it as a hobby so why not incorporate the two things i really enjoy
cause i'm more of a first hand learner through experience you know
There's video games like Solasta or bg3 that seeks to replicate 5e into a video game format if you wanna go down that route too
instead of reading and watching youtube videos thats how i learned how to play other board games you know like chess checkers monopoly uno and other board games i forgot
Unfortunately, it's not common for folks to bring on people who have done no legwork to learn the game on their own unless it's explicitly a teaching game session, which you can sometimes find at local game stores, libraries, and through certain websites.
It can be pretty tough to find a game without any prior knowledge of DnD. It'll definitely make it harder if you haven't given the rules a fair shake. Unfortunately, DnD requires reading!
interesting
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
You can give the introductory demo a try to get your feet wet. That was you can have a better sense of what the rules mean when you go to read them.
DnD isn't really a game made to be played solo. Usually, you have 1 Dungeon Master and 3-5 players.
D&D isn't meant for solo play, but you can make it work. It's like using a knife for a screwdriver: possible, of course, but not ideal.
im planning to join a facebook group for dnd games near my city and maybe hit up a local board game store. also just a pretty good reason to meet new people
oke oke i kinda understand the game now
Are there any Text-only Modern Horror games? I’m looking for a 'deadly survival' or 'mansion escape' vibe, no fantasy or medieval stuff. Are these kinds of games popular here?
open for not text only btw. im open.
so each class has their own stats and that stat is added to the roll that person gets for example attack +3 roll 15 so 15 + 3 = 18 in total for the roll right ?
Hard to answer, as what you're asking about isn't explicitly Dungeons and Dragons. Maybe the folks in #non-dnd-topics can help?
i'll look into it, thanks !
Your stats aren't decided by your class, but each class runs off of different stats, so some classes prefer certain stats over others.
Your class decides what abilities your character gets. Your stats are assigned independently during character creation.
yes that is how the attack roll/ability check would work
But your calculations here are correct! You roll dice, add modifiers, and try to beat specific numbers assigned by your DM.
Better than before!
Now that you have a basis, I'd recommend skimming the Basic Rules, specifically the Playing The Game and Character Creation sections. When you reach a section you want to know more about, then start reading in depth in that part.
oke thank you for the tip
ive palyed one, one shot and tried to dm the heroes of the boarderlands starter set last noght but it was super hard, but its made me want to try and dm again for a larger group. any tips on how to be more creative when folling the dm guide tips in the dm guide book? i felt like i kept stopping and there was no flow.
If you ask the folks over in #dm-discussion this question, they'll be able to give you some much more in depth answers
thanks very much
where do we play dnd
At a physical table, using a platform called a virtual tabletop, and/or via an online call platform like Discord/Skype/etc.
how to get a party

ok ty
Asking for a friend
He joined the party joking a bit saying he'd play a "rizzard" (idk, wizard with high charisma?) I recommended warlock and bard to him and he refused both, so I recommended enchantment wizard and he's likely taking it
HOWEVER, you may have noticed, I completely forgot that sorcerers use charisma to cast...
He doesn't know that sorcerers may fit his description
Besides he just asked today if he could play a dragon. I'm starting to think Draconic Sorcerer might suit him
A reasonable suggestion!
Draconic ancestry Dragonborn, the old reliable
As a newb I had a similar rp fantasy to fulfill but I wanted a tail so I played that but as a half dragon instead
I think like 12-14 charisma on a wizard isn't too disruptive
My char was like, 1 drac sorc, 3 bsinger wizard, 14 chr 16 int
This is funny, because I created wizard with high charisma (he has guild artisan background, so high charisma fits those persuation checks) on D&D Beyond and you made me thinking "Hm, maybe sorcerer might be a better idea?"
A sorcerer with ritual caster can pass off as a rizzard
Also why is there a difference between dragonborn and draconic bloodline
You even have a spellbook
Generally pretty cool if you want to rp a wizard with sorcery talents tbh
Nearly anyone can have a dragon ancestor, but dragonborn is just one specific race
Dragonborn is a race, draconic bloodline is sorcerer subclass (in game mechanics)
A noticable chunk of dragonborn arcane magic users are draconic sorcerers
They don't do much wizardry, apparently
I saw some people intentionali creating draconic bloodline dragonborn sorcerers so they "are the true dragonborns"
A dragonborn with a much stronger claim for a direct connection to dragonkind instead of a distant one
That's because Dragonborns have get their magic from their blood not from study
This is my suggestion to your friend personally
As a dm I'd give them the feat for free at lv1, so they can start off feeling like a wizard lizard, but grabbing it at 4 shouldn't be too bad either
I did some googling, am i right to say that dragonborn are just a species with very similar biology to dragons but cannot be considered to actually have draconic ancestry
The exhausting part about that is that their ancestry trait description claims there's at least something distant
The stereotype of wizards actually putting in effort and sorcerers just being nepo babies is inaccurate imo
But kobolds are closer to true dragons than dragonborn
I am so exhausted of this being treated as comedy gold in every other dnd skit, ngl
I think more accurately would be wizards being the nerds who turn up to every exam with straight As by studying, and sorcerers being the jocks just passing but having other talents to make up for it
Most common D&D meme jokes get pretty old after awhile
This is also more #dnd-discussion by this point!
sweats in lore confusion
Sorcerer is this guy who comes on exam unprepared but gets an A anyway
Im a new player, but imo being a 'true dragonborn' just means your dna is 100% dragonborn, with no other race in the lineage
Yet the lore on dragonborn quite literally states they originally hatched from dragon eggs
Have you checked #looking-for-community?
Do you have any local game stores or libraries?
I tried but i couldn't understand what the difference was
Community is for other D&D servers that can host 1 to multiple games, or are Westmarch style games (no set DM or player group)
But they’re another way to play D&D
A lot of games get posted everyday, it won't take as long as you think to find a newbie friendly one
Oh, nah im gonna keep looking, thx tho :>
Homebrew seems easier for me compared to a normal campaign, since i dont have to memorize as much
Also there’s Roll20, Demiplane, and other ttrpg game finder services/forums
I made a list of places to find games: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
I think it's more about ego than biology. You know, draconic bloodline dragonborn might feel more superior to his kins
Whelp
I didn't send a text correctly so i messed up a chance to join i guess
I give up searching today, im just gonna try searching tmrw or the day after
Absolutely MUST have Topple
Slow and Sap also seem very nice to have.
I think that ideally I would like to have one weapon that can apply each status and if I can make those weapons have varying ranges that would be ideal
That way I get the widest range of coverage and status ailments
Im DMing for the first time in a couple days. Has anyone played Peril in Pinebrook. Recommend it?
I haven't played it, but it looks like a really good onramp for new players and DMs.
I've run it and it's an excellent onboard adventure for completely new DMs and players.
The only thing "missing" is a map of the main adventure location, but I think the community has already created some suitable maps. I'd give it a google.
should i print it off for everyone, or have one behind the screen and describe it
Matter of preference.
i see
Since the location is so small, describing it is fine. If you play in person I'd still draw it out. Online, I'd use the vtt of my choice to employ fog of war for undiscovered locations.
legitimately had nightmares about DMing, even for a beginner one theres so much info and I keep watching hours of youtube but I have no clue how its actually gonna go and how i can react if they go off script. even reading the script boxes feel unnatural
Making notes helps me, both because the act of writing things down wedges it into my mind, plus I know what makes sense for myself to refer to later. But you can only prepare so much; improv is part of it!
I would try to remember it's a game and the point is to have fun. If the players are your friends, they'll probably forgive any mistakes—and if they're new too, they probably won't even know if/when you DO make a mistake!
Is it doable to have low dexterity and intelligence as a bard? I already made my character for my campaign and my dungeon master said go for it because of my origin and back story as a rather simple farm boy
My dm says i can lean into roleplaying this quite well
What I worry about is with my -2 dex and -1 int I will just be a detriment to my party do to low armor class
My dm says I will make up for it with my incredible charisma and my proficiency in performance and persuasion +5 of each
I know i should trust my dm but if anyone has any tips for working around these say flaws I would appreciate the tips
So here's the thing. D&D is a team game. Your weaknesses will hopefully be balanced out by your teammates. So lean into what you're good at and try not to sweat what you're bad at (because every player character should be bad at something).
Your DM is wise!
Thanks I appreciate the feedback
There's also the matter of the dice. You may have a lower chance of success at certain tasks, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't attempt them. But it's also important to let others take the spotlight rather than trying to do everything yourself.
Not to throw even more videos atop your pile, but if you haven't checked them out already, the Running the Game series by Matt Colville is excellent and has helped me back when I started DMing
https://youtu.be/1K8hGhpQzKg?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
So if it comes to a dex throw try and let someone else make that dex throw lean into my skills and make choices and throws that will help the party not lead us to doom and death (ie don’t try and sneak past the guards for the party maybe try and persuade them to let us go free or let the other players try and sneak us out or sneak behind them and do a surprise attack)
The -2 dex will mean that you really don't want to make yourself a target for the enemies, since they will have a fairly good chance of hitting you. This can be really interesting, but also relies on having teammates that have your back on the frontline.
You can't always let someone else make a check, like if the DM asks you to make a Dex save, that's on you. You just have to hope!
Kk Ty good to know
But yes to relying on the skills you're good at when appropriate.
im legit watching him rn and he's explaining building the dungeon and enemy's well but I feel like theres no explanation of what actually happens when they play, Like in the section im watching now there a pressure trap with a scythe. Do I just let it him them, if so for how much, how many players is it hitting, for those who try to dodge do I let them go one by one deciding what they want to do while its slowly falling? or for the secret door, how to they know to even roll for perception, do i have to hit them to it, etc.,
im 100% overthinking it
Well, for your first session and first players, I'd simply ask everyone their passive perception, or have them roll a perception check, and then tell the one who rolled highest that they spot something.
You're right, the goal is to have fun, and traps that nobody notices aren't fun.
does passive perception last the whole game?
Basically yes, but it's a DM tool. So you use it when you want to.
It's always the same score, since there is no dice roll involved: 10 + bonuses
In some of my games I write down everyones passive perception ahead of time, so I don't even have to ask.
ok cool
For your other questions, knowing the rules is what helps. When a player is trying to resist danger, the DM will likely ask them to make a saving throw; which stat depends on the nature of the damage. The scythe trap would suggest being quick enough to dodge, so that'd be Dexterity. What number, though? There's a table for various difficulty classes (DCs) depending on whether you think a task/obstacle is Very Easy to Nearly impossible (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TypicalDifficultyClasses).
What about damage? Also in the rules! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/dms-toolbox#Traps
Having reference notes for yourself helps so you don't need to read the adventure in the moment nor do you need to hold this all in your head at the same time. My shorthand is write notes on the stuff that you can't improvise at the table during play.
Plus, you can always adjust things as the DM if those values seem too high or too low.
oh gotcha, I havent seen that yet. I think I'm taking way too many notes then, plus the PDF for the adventure
Every DM figures out the right amount of notes for themselves.
A friendly tip for other new players maybe wanting to get into dungeon master role
My dungeon master taught me you don’t always need a map with pictures and such to represent stuff he has a plain grid map and uses dominos to outline buildings and such he says he can better come up with obstacles and buildings on the fly rather than relying on pre drawn maps
He was very helpful with how to play and gave me some tips like that for when I get into being a dm in the future
I plan to start as a player for a few months then end of march if enough people sign up for it the game cafe offers a 1 day course on how to be a dungeon master they offer it 2-3 times a year so if I don’t get into that one I may get into one down the line (needs 3 people to sign up for it or it won’t happen)
that is a good guide. thanks! ive been trying to read through the essentials kit rulebook but it feel s like theres so much and I dont want to stop the game just to look stuff up
One good tool to have is:
"I don't know the exact rule for this, but I'm going to rule it like this for now. Let's check after the session if there are any nuances we missed."
One: You can absolutely do that if you want. But you can put a limit on it: I'm going to look for one (or two or whatever) minutes to find this, and if I can't, I'll rule it as [X] and move on. I'll check after the game is over.
Because breaking the flow of the session to check for a rule can be just as immersion breaking as getting a rule wrong.
yeahhh thats what i was thinking
My rule of thumb for "I'll rule it this way for now" is always rule in favor of the players.
Nobody likes their abilities arbitrarily nerfed.
Ok gotcha. Idk how im gonna stop myself from trying to be "against" the players
One mind shift I'd keep in mind is: the monsters are against the players, you (the DM) aren't.
also Matt is saying something about "60 mins real time 8 hours DND time" is there actual transation of time or am I just making up how fast the days go
New DND player here and I'm trying to make my character sheet. Would it be a cardinal sin to be a Human/Halfling hyrid? I want the traits of a Halfling (I'll rule out the human traits since obviously that would be hoarding) but the character I have in mind I don't want to be two feet tall with a human adult sized skull.
Combat is the real place where time is measured within the game. Outside of that, it's up to the DM to decide how fast time passes.
It's just one example of how flexible time is in D&D.
It's basically as fast and as slow as you the DM say it is. Except in combat, where each round is approximately 6 seconds.
This you can often do, individual DMs may vary.
Everyone has their own DMing style, and I know many people agree with this sentiment, but personally I find it very normal to look up a rule while playing and DMing. That's why I often give newcomers the advice that they should learn where a specific piece of information is in the rulebooks, rather than trying to memorize everything
Flavor is free, meaning descriptions can usually be changed with no one batting an eye. But always check with your table to ensure your reflavorings work with the vibe and setting.
Perfect!
Sure, and I agree. This is why I qualified the sentiment with can.
Also depends on how long you need to look up said rule.
If you already know that you have no idea where it is, might as well cut your losses.
Yep, which is why I mention a time limit (if you go the look-stuff-up route).
Is there a way to be broke and play dnd? While enjoying the same amount of fun a person with the whole dnd kits and all would have ...
Sure, the basic rules are free:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
All the extra baubles and bits and bobs are just more cherries piled onto an already tasty cake.
Ooo my birthday is coming up and I wanna be a dm for the first time I ever play and get my friends who have never played dnd to try it out they are interested but also don't know anything like me
The rules for how to play D&D are free, and you can use digital dice and character sheets for free as well. The main thing people pay for is character customization options. The free version of the basic rules only includes 12 of the 13 classes, only 1 subclass for each, and limited options for spells, species, feats, etc. But if you can make do with the limited options, then its 100% possible to play the game without spending a penny
welcome to the club lmao
Im going with the peril in pinebrook bc theres premade characters and all you need is dice
also vagabond pfp is fire
Alr I'm gonna try reading through whatever I can right now and afterwards if I have more questions i will ask them here and i don't wanna stress about the characters because I think I should use prebuilt characters
wdym 6 seconds, like they have 6 seconds game time or real time. Is there a time limit on how fast they decide
One little disclaimer about Peril in Pinebrook: it's almost like "D&D Light". It avoids certain rules and breaks down character sheets into the bare essentials. Once your players are comfortable with the basics, it might be worth making "real" character sheets for them.
poop
6 seconds of game time of course
oh why does that matter?
Spells and the like last a certain duration.
Usually it's enough to count the rounds that have passed since combat started.
That shouldn't be necessary.
Is there a typical race for each type of class
Nope.
Not really. 1 full round of combat is 6 seconds, so for example 10 rounds would be 1 minute, Most combats only last 3-4 rounds, so a spell with a 1 minute duration will almost always last an entire combat
Any species can be any class.
i see
I more mean like would for example warriors more likely be humansssss typically
Nope
Not really.
That's what we mean. There isn't a "typically".
Also not particularly. Pretty much every species has a warrior archetype
well some of the players im dming for have dnd experience, will they still have fun with the basic characters in peril?
I first made a homebrew type one shot but got overwhelmed so found that bc of "bob the worldbuilder"
I think most people who like D&D will find fun whatever the DM is running. So I think your Peril group will be fine!
Yo uhm so there's so much is everything needed or should I watch a YouTube video?
Read the first two chapters (Playing the Game and Character Creation) at least.
Sure 😅
Thankz for the answer tryna figure out what race to make my beastmaster
Pick what sounds cool or fun!
You can also pretty much ignore the class parts that don’t pertain to what you want to play. No need to read the Wizard page and the spells section if you want to play a Fighter, for example
There are quite a lot of guide videos out there, but unless they're explaining the rules verbatim, they'll always simplify what is written. It's very useful to have read the rules, even if just to get a hang of some if the games essentials. I'd say the first chapter is required reading.
Personally, I think most experienced players will be adverse to the idea of using premade characters. Creating a character idea and bringing them to life is the primary reason most people play this game. Premade characters are a good tool for beginners if they want to get a feel for how the game works, but it very much is a set of training wheels that you're expected to take off at some point
Additionally, the premades in peril are equivalent to level 1 characters. People with some D&D experience will have made a level 1 character in little time.
You can ask your players what they're cool with as well!
I wouldn't have a problem with a premade, for instance.
I always liked the idea of the little official dnd stories I’ve yet to play one yet
Premade characters can be used alongside custom character, as long as they're all the same level
What they called anyone know?
Are you referring to official adventures/modules?
Ah that’s it
Modules
I saw the video with uhmmmm slimesickle where they played the worst one
Looked fun
I need anyone to explain the game and character development for me. Is there anyone free to help me in a call?
I'm familiar with the video you're talking about. The adventure they were playing was either fan made, or it was made for an older edition of D&D. That wasn't an official module for 5e
if anyone calls him id be down to join
making a dc group then?
Unfortunately, this discord server does not have voice channels, and we don't have the resources to do 1-on-1 lessons with everyone that joins

Tomb of Annihilation? That’s certainly an adventure I wouldn’t recommend for newbies. The history of the module is quite fascinating and speaks to a very specific, old style of adventure and DMing
however, we have lots of extremely helpful resources that you can use to get started. The bot post above has lots of links and information that will be very helpful to you. If you have any specific questions, just ask them here. We are more than happy to help
well, seems like I have to spend a lot of time to read. But thank you for the help
bruh fr haha id rather just yap with someone, reading articles for college and this is frying my brain. But I very much appricate everyone in here who uses their time to help

@winged cosmos This is the advice I got that I'm (as we speak) using if you want a jumpstart. Kind of helping me a bunch with what I needed to look for
i thought there was a voice channel (broadcast from DnDBeyond, where everyone else is muted) every so often for certain events. or am i thinking of a different discord?
There's the stage channel.
Not sure what 5e means you don’t have to tell me I get that there’s a lot going on rn. It’s a fun vid tho ❤️❤️
yes, there is a stage channel. But that's different thing than a voice channel, in discord terms
thank you too
5e refers to the 5th edition of D&D, the most recent one
so Dungeons & Dragons has been around for a long time. back to the 70s. every so often, it has a rules change. right now we are on the 5th edition, also known as 5e. it was started in 2014. but recently, 5e has had a rules update in 2024.
Ah Ty
how can people prove their char lvl, as the game is a table top
You’ll have a character sheet that lists all your character details
And it makes all the other editions irrelevant or you can kinda pick and choose with which rules you wanna play?
usually people will have it written on their character sheet (paper that they have at the table).
You can play whatever edition you want, though this server focuses on 5e.
The most recent official one is here;
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/phb/downloads/DnD_2024_Character-Sheet.pdf
yeah, but isn't it very easy to cheat then?
I see
you can for sure play old versions. 3.5e is still popular, and 4e is making a comeback for tactical gaming. a lot of people play 2e still too. it just isn't a good idea to start mixing rules from different editions in the same adventure.
All editions are still played, though 5e is more popular by a significant metric. It’s also the most newbie friendly in my opinion
like... if i took a pencil and changed the 5 into a 15 for level?
Not as easy as you might think, especially the more experience you have playing the game
I like to compare it to Smash Bros. 5e is like Smash Ultimate. Its the most recent one, so it has the most players and the best learning curve for newcomers. But some people do prefer older editions. 3.5e is like Melee. Its much more tactical and math heavy, with more opportunities for optimization
Just to clarify, because I think I see why you might be asking this question:
Your DnD character usually isn't shared between games. You start your DnD character at level 1 with a group, and then keep playing with that same group.
If you find a new group, you'll be starting a different character at level 1 again.
This is where rules knowledge helps. Your sheet isn’t private, at least the DM should be able to have access if/when they ask for it.
Otherwise sometimes it isn’t always hard to determine. If your table is using Standard Array for stats and level 1 characters, and someone shows up with a 20 Str Fighter that uses Action Surge, something fishy is going on
Plus, cheating will probably result in you getting kicked from a table, so you're no longer playing the game.
It's in everyone interests to play together and fairly.
I see

Thanks for the answer guys love you all ❤️❤️
Hit per Die is my dmg, isn't it?
That's not a D&D term, so something is getting lost in translation!
Where do you see this on a character sheet?
hit point die*
Your hit die is tied to your hit points, not to your damage.
Ah, no. Your hit points are your life score. Hit Points = HP.
Damage is connected to your weapons and spells.
thank you and excuse my misspelling ^^'>
can new players play DnD like join in for beginners ?
yes, that's why there are starter sets
intresting
the thing i cant find any DnD for beginners where i live and i cant order as well
and bd3 is yeah 125 gb my ps doesnt have that much storage too without deleting all of my other games 🥲
have you tried #find-a-game ?
you know when people tell me i'm inosuke for demon slayer i can see why 🙂
but can i ask for starter game ?
If you make a post for #looking-for-dm using the instructions in the Find a Game channel you can specify that you’re new.
You can also take a more proactive approach and browse through DM listings in #looking-for-players . Even if a game doesn’t explicitly say it’s newbie friendly it’s always worth to ask!
what does GP in starting equipment mean?
Gold pieces.
thank you
depending on where they're from there may be a cultural tendency, but anyone can be anything
it's also usually a few classes instead of one per race
when i think of drow, i think of assassins, lolthite clerics and wizard men
So I’m really new to this dungeons and dragon stuff I wanna get into it, but I don’t know where to start or how to start. Can anyone help?

The opening two parts of the rules linked above ("Playing the Game" and "Character Creation") and #learn-to-play are good to check out first!
Otherwise you can:
- Play the demo.
- Watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
