The answers to both of those questions are in the "Playing The Game" section (in the D20 Tests and the The Six Abilities sections, respectively), which goes through the explanation of how the structural rules of the game work. Give them a look, and if you're still confused we'll be happy to help!
A crit happens specifically on attack rolls when you roll a 20 before modifiers
What are modifiers

With the background athlete it says you get a tool proficiency in Vehicles(Land) does that equate to mount proficiency, carriages, carts, etc, or a little bit of both? based off 5e; probably no bugattis or rolls royce
Your DM will decide when a tool proficiency can or cannot be used, so you don't have to worry too much about the specifics, but you have the right general idea. Though there typically needs to be an actual vehicle involved, so it wouldn't be used for just riding on a mount. They'd need to be pulling something like a cart or chariot
So general maneuverability of how the animals move being attached to a moveable structure. Was writing out a character sheet for my next character and that stumped me a little, so up to the dm or in general cart, carriage, wagon, and chariots. Thanks for the help!
The bonuses or penalties you get when you roll for something
Usually to do with your stats and skills
When you pick a lock for example, which checks for sleight of hand, a typical table would probably look like:
DC15 (You need to roll a 15 at least without modifiers) to open a chest
You'd first roll, and your modifiers would be added towards the final score, so if you have 14 dex for example, that's +2 to the final score, and if you have sleight of hand proficiency, that could be another +3
If you rolled a 12, your final score would be 12 + 2 + 3 = 17, allowing you to unlock the chest
um... I'm not sure if you made a typo or misunderstand something, but modifiers do apply to your roll for a DC. I'm not sure why you said "without modifiers"
I mean like, if a character somehow has no modifiers whatsoever, they'd need to roll a 15 at least to pass the check
Probably a confusing way to word that, but alright
Feel free to build on the explanation
Can any1 teach me ?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Unfortunately there's too many newcomers to this server each day to actually do one-on-one teaching sessions. Thankfully, there's plenty of resources (and us!) who can help out if you get stuck
i wonder if WotC will ever bring back an advent calendar on their webpage. one with printables or something.
Is it worth paying for a game as a beginner? For example on "StartPlaying"
That's really subjective. There's no guarantee a paid game will be good, but you can do the research on the potential GM. Plus, folks are less likely to flake on something they're paying for.
If you have the money to spare and are that keen to play, it seems as good a route as any other.
Thanks for your input.
If nothing else, it'll likely be the fastest way to find a game. Though I agree with razorwing about the rest of it
-# The other fast way to find a game is to offer to DM.
Hey everyone, I’m brand new to D&D. I’ve always wanted to try it but I never knew anyone who held regular games. Randomly thought there might be a discord for it and here we are. Where should I start?

Hi
My sis invited me to a campaign they are in so I'm excited to play my wizard, a lil nervous since its gonna be my first time. Idk when it will happen but I think it will be fun
Is it wrong to want to play dnd with close family members such as parents or sibling, or do you guys see that as weirdness?
I want to play with my father and brother but my father is disabled, my brother is ok he's just busy doing other stuff.
What would you all suggest?
That seems totally normal. I've played with my brother and sister as well and it was fun. I'd just ask then if they want to try for a one shot and then give it a go.
I was thinking of actually trying a oneshot i just dont know where to find pre-made adventures for free. also todays my b-day and im hoping some of my family members can get together and play.
My father is a heart transplant patient and over the years it taking a toll on him, he also might be in the very early stages of Parkinson's but were not sure 100% yet.
There are some free adventures listed here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
Well, dnd is fundamentally just sitting at a table, talking and occasionally rolling dice. I think it would be a great idea to try something like D&D to spend more time together.
I play D&D with my kids. It's great.
Yeah i think so too because he dosent do much.
Would i aslo find adventures on itch?
Which is the most newcomer friendly for a first time dm and first time players?
Thats awesome.
I find Peril In Pinebrook very newcomer friendly. It's a very small adventure, has simplified rules, and has some premade characters.
I've ran it for some new players too and they enjoyed it.
Thanks everyone! ill give it a go if possible.
gulp.. uh hi! I'm completely new to dnd and i have no clue what I'm doing so i came here ☹️

Hi ive read alot of the stuff in the learn to play channel but i dont really know where to go next, i wanna get into dnd online
Well if you feel you're ready to find a group to play with, give #find-a-game a good read. It has some advice on finding a group to play D&D with as well as has important information on how to use the Looking For Game channels here on the server.
Keep in mind that finding a game/group can take some time as it involves planning a game/campaign, coordinating schedules, ensuring the group meshes well, etc.
Will it be okay if i pretty much learn as i go?
I'd suggest at least being familiar with chapter 1 and chapter 2 of the free rules (1st chapter covers the core game mechanics and rythm of the game, 2nd chapter covers how to create a character step by step). Then it also helps to know how to use your character sheet.
But yeah, learn as you go
Is that on the beyond website
Yes
Yep - right here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
alright thanks i appreciate it
gonna need a crash course in how to function as a proper DM
Local hobby/game stores, libraries, school clubs, and community centers would be my first round of searching. Plus, you could use online tools for additional searching (Facebook, MeetUp, Nextdoor, any local subreddits/Discords) to see who/what else is out there.
okay! thanks you
ooh thank you!
i know my school has a club but idk if its active
and im not..very liked in my school so i get nervous going to things like that
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!

Yo
hey, I’m like completely brand new to the game. I’m just looking for DM’s or someone that teach me I’m desperate.
Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules. Then when you have a rough idea of the game mechanics and how to use a character sheet, you can find a group to play with in our Looking for Game channels. You can read how to use those channels in #find-a-game.
Hey yall so I recently became kinda interested in dnd and im tryna I guess learn a lil some some. Im about to read the official rules I created a character already but I kinda just put something together that felt like me I guess😭 I love games that are grindy with stories and shit so this makes me feel like I’m in the games I play hence why I’m so interested. I was wondering if anyone had some time to look at my character sheet maybe? Give me a couple pointers ?
do i have to read the whole thing
i'm just reading the whole thing
Best to read the whole thing
Just the first few chapters of the free basic rules is necessary
But yeah, reading more never hurt nobody
Hello new here I’ve never played dbd before what does one go about playing dnd
Hiya, I'm new to the game, like completely never played. But I wanna learn
hi all. whats the best class for a fist character?
The one you're most interested in learning about.
If you're looking for especially low mechanical complexity, I'd say fighter.
Fist as in punching people or do you mean the Flaming Fist organization
If you mean fist and not first, monk is the best. Else, Deva’s answer.
wanting to know what i should do to create a character inspired by hypnos from hades and just greek mythology in general
I effing love the hades games
i love hypnos
ive made some characters from the game on dnd beyond already lol
orpheus, zagreus, artemis, athena and hermes
and hypnos is one of my favorite characters plus i really like the concept of psychic attacks
Maybe aberrant mind sorcerer then
what level would i need to be for that?
3
currently the characters ive made are all level 1 since im planning to use them when my schools club starts back up next year
Then play a sorcerer
And when you get to level three take the aberrant mind subclass
You’ll need to buy the books, or get someone to share them. If you’ve got a dnd club though someone in your group should have the book.
if they have the books i can access the extra stuff through them?
how would that work
like they make the character for me or
DDBeyond allows content sharing through the master subscription. How it works is that someone with the master sub can activate "Content Sharing" toggle on a DDB campaign. Then, everyone that has a character in that campaign has access to the owned content of everyone else.
So that means they can look at the digital content and also use that content in the character creator.
oh wow
can they add me through the website and i can just access the stuff on my side
and also does purchasing a single book give them all the content or only some
Buying the book gives them the content from that book
i believe he does, hes pulled up digital copies before but usually we use a whiteboard to copy off the physical book lol
oh i see
hello, my friend group and I have recently picked up D&D and I have been assigned the Forever DM. We've played like, two scuffed homebrews, and I'm thinking of making a DM screen. Where could I get some inserts for it?
DriveThruRPG, perhaps?
Thank you
Btw, the Monk's Martial strike, uses Dex instead of Strength, so how does that work? Do u just roll using your dex?
That's correct. Normally you'd add your Strength modifier to the d20 roll when you make an Unarmed Strike attack. As a Monk, you can choose to add your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier.
thanks
Hello iam new to dnd i have watched bit on yt but wondering like iam wizard can i make my own power
No, not exactly. Wizard is a class, and it has a list of class abilities. As you level up, you'd pick the abilities you get at each level.
So you could pick options that a different Wizard might not have, but you'd both still have access to the same list of options at every level.
You can read now about what Wizards can do here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Wizard
Just was commissioning art for my Dragonborn paladin and realized how funny Dragonborn’s look in hoods. With their horns and large heads
I'm trying to create a character on dndb and my dm said custom backgrounds are allowed but when making it i dont see the option to choose a origin feat just skills tools or languages
hi me and my friend wnated to get into d&d and watned start a beginger game plz @gleaming hinge
hi
pretty please
The 'custom background' option on DnD Beyond is using the old background rules. It's an outdated option. For workarounds, I'd recommend asking in #ddb-support .

Hello everyone! I am not that new to playing D&D. I have listened to a lot of podcasts and played a lot of one-shots before, but I am about to take on DM'ing for the first time because my groups DM wants to actually play rather than run the game. I am going to be running the Dragon of Icespire Peak and the following three books after. Are there any tips or pointers for DM'ing.
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
You can also peruse #dm-discussion and search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice. This is a common question!
Awesome! Thank you so much for you help!
When you first get into Storm Lord's Wrath, the inn will seem intimidating because there is a quantity of named NPCs all in the same room at the same time with the party able to interact with them. prepare each NPC on their own and have something for each of them to talk about. winging it will just feel chaotic. also, some of the stat blocks and info for a few NPCs is spread out among the other two parts. i made the mistake of not reading them all as one, and ended up describing certain NPCs wrong according to physical features, personality, or even race.
Also, read the module all the way through and take notes on whatever you feel like you need to remember (NPCs, how plot points connect, etc.). I wish I'd done this with the first few adventures I ran.
you will also notice that a group called the stone cold reavers have personality descriptions for each one, which is nice. however, the first one that the party can interact with has none of that. so be prepared to fill in gaps that are missing from the adventures.
I have started reading through it so I will totally read through it all before starting. Thankfully we aren't starting until after the new year rolls in so I have some time to get all figured out before we start
you can read the entirety of DoIP and play through that. but read SLW, SDW, and DC as one adventure instead of separate chunks. as i said, there's information needed that might be in the other parts.
I will keep that in mind. Thank you for the help!
oh, and if your party decides to go to Neverwinter, you're pretty much on your own. its a big notable place on the map, but there is very little information about it in the whole 10 years of 5e.
Let's keep the behind-the-scenes sections of an official adventure over in #1029833015423143957 , as best we can!

Hey guys, so me and my friends want to start playing but none of us have ever played before and dont really know anything about it. Theres 5 of us total. We have this box that has: 6 hero figures, 6 hero boards, 130 plastic markers, 9 double-sided battle tiles, 22 double-sided adventure tiles, 7 custom dice, 106 tokens, 322 cards, 1 storage tray, 1 rule book, 1 scenario book, and 1 key moment tracker. We dont really know what were doing with any of this. Any help/tips would be fantastic and very appreciated. I can also send pictures of the box if needed.
What is the name of the box?
Battle for the world of dragonlance
You mean Warriors of Krynn? That's a board game, not traditional D&D.
That’s uh
Not for D&D
Oh wow I feel really embarrassed now, my friend said it was 😶
It's got D&D branding and features content from the D&D roleplaying game, but it is not the roleplaying game itself.
Kind of like how Pokemon Monopoly isn't actually the Pokemon game.
Good analogy!
Although I would like to see someone try and play makeshift pokemon with the stuff in that box

The rules linked above and #learn-to-play should help!
And feel free to ask any questions!
The free Basic Rules should have everything you need to get started.
So this is a lot and kind of confusing, is the first thing I do create a character?
You should read the rules that precede character creation: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Hey, im a new dnd player can I start playing dnd online without owning any dice irl?
And without basically owning a set of dnd
Yep, digital dice rollers are plentiful. Even Google will let you roll math rocks.
I shall be stealing the term “math rocks”
It's pretty common around the hobby!
Genuinely did not know that! The more you know
And what websites do you guys reccomend for character creation?
I use D&D Beyond. I don't know what else is out there that's legit and any good. (Roll20's character creator is janky, in my experience.)
Slyflourish.com/dice is my goto
I use DnD beyond but im also a dice gremlin.
As in the filetype?
If you need a PDF character sheet, you can find one here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
As a new player, would it be better for me to buy the 2024 Players handbook or The Young Adventurers Collection first?
I have not heard of The Young Adventurers Collection until now, but after looking them up it seems to be a series of lore books and simplified guides that can be used in combination with actual rule books to help you learn how to play. They are not a replacement for the actual rules. Personally, I would not recommend getting them. Especially because they are a few years old now, so it’s entirely possible that the information in them could be out of date, since they were from before the 2024 rules update
One of the main improvements of the 2024 PHB over the 2014 version is that it does a much better job of onboarding new players, so I really don’t think you’ll need an additional supplemental book to walk you through it
how do u guys find people to play with
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!

Hi!
Uhm I need to send an image of my character sheet, I need help guys
It won’t though
Correct - but you can use a reputable file/image hosting service and link to an image that way.
Or if you're using DnDbeyond you can share the URL to the character sheet
im pretty new to playing dnd but should i have a character made before i find a sesion and then tweak it to the theme or should i make a character after i find a group
I'd make a practice character just so you know how the process works and get a bit more familiar with how a character sheet works.
But then be prepared to either tweak that character or create a whole new one to make sure it fits the group/campaign you're playing in.
gotcha thanks so much
also any recomended guides for learning the combat process/mechanics?
Yes! The free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Start with chapter 1 which covers the core game mechanics and the rhythm of the game
Then chapter 2 goes over how to create a character step by step.
I’m a bit new but how many spells does a level 5 bard need? Just making sure before I level up and everything
It's less what you need, and more what you get 🙂
But you can choose which ones
(from the Bard spell list)
Okay ty
Check your class list as well to see what you have: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190876-bard?utm_source=avrae&utm_medium=reference
Bards are a very flexible class, but most will choose utility type spells, especially as an effort to address capability gaps in the party
I don't, actually, but that's ok because we can always look it up 🙂
At 5th level, you can choose from two Level 3 spells, as to which ones? I'd say it depends on if there are other casters in your party, and what spells they have; you might choose differently if you're the only caster in the party
Im oldcomers
So if my friend and I are both interested in being a dungeon master, can one of us be a DM for one one shot, and the other be a DM for another one shot or is that something that shouldn't be done
You can absolutely do that. In fact, I think rotating DM duties is really good for a group's long-term health.
There a place to go to help make a dnd build?
#character-discussion for general help with a character or ideas, or #optimization for more optimized number crunching and stuff like that
Alr thx
Hey, all, new-ish to D&D. How does dndbeyond work, and is there a cost?
The short answer is D&D Beyond is a digital character sheet system and it also provides access to D&D content (adventures, items, etc.) digitally. You can sign up for free and create up to 6 characters, with access to the basic rules. Anything besides that you'll have to pay for.
You can delete characters to put in new ones, though
I was on here a few days ago looking for help with a borked warlock hexblade/tome build as a new dnd player with a first time DM. Several people offered good advice.
I wanted to update that I’ve consulted a veteran party member. Since I have Eldritch versatility, I’m just going to hold out until our next ASI level and switch pacts from tome to blade. That should resolve a solid chunk of my issues.
Thanks to everyone that offered help and opinions! I really appreciated the sounding board.
I had a dwarf fighter once, is that close enough?
Yea you wanna be friends?
I’d rather you not friend me, but we can be friends
K
hey everyone i need help
What is it?
How much of a character should I prepare before a session 0 with a DM?
At least a general idea. Any more than that I'd check with the DM to see what they want
Multiple ideas is even better!

Heyy!

Heyy
Hi!
Hey just joined the server, new to dnd but would like to learn more and hopefully join a game
Kinda looking to maybe perhaps jump into a game. I’m in one now, but we meet every two weeks and I’m really feeling it (esp because I have another character I’m both excited and nervous to try lol)
I am a first timer where should i start? my friends had me creat a character and now idk what to do?
Me to tbh I’m not sure what to do
So creating a character as practice is a good way to start familiarizing yourself with the rules.
Now it's time to look for a group. I recommend trying to set up a game with your friends!
If that isn't possible, you can also check if there are games that you can join in your local game store, or check online. This server also has some channels dedicated to group finding: #find-a-game
so im wanting to get into dnd but dont know where i can play at what should i do
You can play wherever someone is offering to run a game! There ar emany places, both in-person and online. Community member iamrazorwing put together this document that gives you an overview:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
thank you
hi
how do I play dnd online?
D&D's typical depiction is of people locally meeting up at a certain time at a predetermined location to play.
Online, it's still people meeting up at a certain time. You just use long range communications, such as voice calls, and often people use a Virtual TableTop (or VTT for short) for the table.
Discord can do for your chat, D&D Beyond can share your dice. That can be all you need to play!
Are you familiar with the rules of the game?
Is there any possible way to make D&D easier to visualise? I've been wanting to play for a while but I can't picture images in my head at all (I have aphantasia), so worldbuilding and structure is more difficult.
Yeah, you could use something like owlbear rodeo to plop down a map and use tokens for your figures.
There are also map creating software like Dungeondraft and Wonderdraft.
Image search, perhaps? There's a lot of art out there. Just give it a keyword and put dnd in the search.
Oh!! That's so cool I had no idea about those things, thank you.
I'll give them a try and see what works!
Hey i have the exact some problem! i also have aphantasia, i totally feel you. something i do is sometimes i write things out? if you can but like the other person suggested images search is a great idea
i have aphantasia but i have super good like ability to create voices and sounds in my head? so something i do is imagine sounds instead of image
and that also helps :)
yeah!! me too, thank you so much :) also i love ur username
thank youuu!!!! :)
hope that helped tho
it did! I'll definitely enjoy taking notes and writing stuff because it's always been my kinda thing
yeah!! im super glad!
Hello
I've been playing a while, but newer to newer versions and am being confused by the terminology. Did ancestries replace race and variants replace subrace? Or am I completely missing something?
Check the Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
The current terms are species, for human, dwarf, elf, etc, and lineage for a particular type like drow or wood elf.
Heloo everyone
G'day.
i wanna start dnd but im ovewelamed and dont know where 2 start
gday mate u aussie aswell?
Afraid not. But some tips:
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!

thanks
Plenty of games online.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
As long as you keep your eyes open and avoid games that say "experienced players only" or "highly optimised characters required" you shouldn't have any problem joining as a newcomer.
okay thanks guys ur awsome
Hey I'm new too!
Is it okay with you that we become d&d buddies?
bet but im Australian so youll have to deal with words upside down
Well, I'm from the Philippines so our timezones are close!
oh sick
Hi guys (^-^)ノ
Is it better to learn the basics first before playing in a campaign?
honestly im reading theics rn
Yes, i would say so, or at least know how a lot of it works so you don't get as confused.
the basics*
I'd say better is subjective there. It's very much possible to learn as you go through a campaign. But It might also be valuable to get a feeling of the system first before commiting to a big investment like a campaign.
One shots are great for this
Can you send me what your reading?
this
Thanks
mb i ment this lmao
Hi! I have a question..
Since I'm a beginner Dungeon master, is there anything I should know as the dungeon master?
There are great tips everywhere, but I recommend reading over the DM Basics here in the rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
I-Improvisation
Thank you!!
On a more serious note, don't write a book. Players want to be part of your world, not readers. They want to add their own details, their own dynasties, states, cities, characters, and stories. You have to understand that you, as the master, and they, as players, are playing together in one world, and they want to influence it, otherwise it looks like watching a TV series where the players act as actors.
OKAY I'LL KEEP THAT NOTED!!!
Are you supposed to have a different character for every campaign? Or you can use 1 character for many campaigns
Typically you make a different one for each campaign
Well alright then
What kind of class can you recommend?
I don't know what class to start on!
It depends what kind of powers you want
Well alright.
Can you describe them to me?
The campaign? Or the character I wanna be?
The character
If you want, you can use the same character in different campaigns and incorporate events from these different campaigns into the character's backstory, which essentially brings your character to life because all these events happened to him.
Well I wanna like be fearless and be able to fight anyone I want and just demolish them
That sounds like a barbarian to me
Well alright then!
Alright I might try it
So like what if the campaign happens in a specific region of that world? Like it's still going to be huge, of course, but like does this apply?
For example, I have a world (lazily named Known World) and a region called Konameta (White-River in the language) with its language, cities, towns, politics, religion and so on
How does this apply?
The player is free to change the names of everything in their character sheet. The point is that the events happened to them, and when they go to another campaign, they can simply adapt the names from the new campaign.
Aight
I’d keep in mind that something like that will pend on DM approval, especially compared to a “fresh” backstory. Typically transferring backstories with previous campaign events puts the character at a higher level narratively than what the next campaign might be expected to start at.
For example let’s say your new campaign starts at level 1, and in your previous campaign your party killed a dragon. Such a feat is far above the expected accomplishments / power level of a level 1, so the backstory starts to become incongruent
That's a good point. I wouldn't worry about your next character for your next campaign until you have a next campaign set up. Then you can decide. I think a lot of people decide to try new character and class ideas more than they stick with the same one.
Yes, you are absolutely right, I should have mentioned that to avoid misunderstanding.
is the essentials kit 5e good?
It's got what you need to get started, including an adventure.
Ok
Alternatively, you could check out the Free Rules on D&D Beyond and get some free adventures here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1943-five-inexpensive-tools-on-d-d-beyond-to-make-dming
hello!
im very new to the whole dnd scene and ttrpgs in general i tried to look up how to make characters cuz a few of my friends wanted to try it and i said i might be up to dm for them but honestly the amount of info needed seems overwhelming. any sources that i can find simplified versions of the rules? like a simpler system for our first ttrpg game?
Welcome! The free Basic Rules for 5e can be found in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
There's always Peril in Pinebrook: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
It cuts down the rules to what you need to play an adventure and comes with characters. Give it a go, see what you make of it.
thank you so much😭
ill give it a read
oh i have those its just that they're a bit overwhelming cuz there are so much rules
The newer 2024 5e rules have a lot better formatting imo for learning the game compared to the old 2014 5e ruleset
Id try to take it at your own pace if possible, and of course this channel has a lot of helpful people to answer any questions!
Wait....
The 2014 5e is different from the 2024 5e? I thought they were the same with like different art or something 😭
I have the 2014 5e and that's what I've been reading
Nope, there are small but significant differences between the two rulesets.
Oh ok ok so they're pretty much the same but with minor differences?
Ok that's how i thought it was b4 lol
hi
Think of 2024 as an “update” or “refresh” to the 2014 rules
Hello!
Hey, can anyone explain to me how using solo engines work?
Can you elaborate?
Yeah, that's not a term I'm familiar with
yo ım new to dnd universe can anyone help me to learn

Preferably some that don’t take wifi. I’m a submariner, we don’t get wifi down below.
Personally, I can't provide any recommendations but the resources are out there. Alternatively you might try a few choose your own adventure books such as the Fighting Fantasy series (not D&D but they are classics).
Can I find them on D&D Online?
Maybe check out The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/252355/the-solo-adventurer-s-toolbox
There's a ton of other content on DMsGuild if you just search solo.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Btw if there are any sessions happening in the next few days can i spectate said sessions?
I wanna see actual gameplay from people instead of YouTubers and voice actors cuz i think watching only that type of games would give me unrealistic expectations for myself and my players
Just search on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons). Plenty of amateur games happening at almost any given time!

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
I started reading them but there seems to be missing a lot of info, for example i am looking to create a wizard but there seems to be only 1 subclass when i know there are suposed to be much more
Is there other places with more extensive info i could access
these are the free rules. what you've heard of are the paid versions of said rules
The free basic rules only include the bare bones minimum information needed to play the game. Additional character options are available if you purchase sourcebooks like the Player's Handbook or Tasha's Guide to Everything
The free Basic Rules only have one subclass available per class. You'll have to purchase the books in order to expand your options.
also i would recommend starting with something simpler than a wizard tbh cuz that class is so complicated for a beginner if you want a spell caster from what i've read already sorcerers are way simpler
not really sure i want to invest at least 60€ for just to have the bare minimum to try a game i don't even know if i like
The bare minimum is free, as we've said. The Basic Rules have everything you need to play. It's just missing more customization and specialization options.
Yep, if you make a character with the free content, roll digital dice, and use an online character sheet, you can play the game without purchasing anything
Except the Internet subscription, I suppose

i was wodering if anyone can help, me and 3 of my friends have just started dnd this week and wanted to play a round online but we are confused as to what to play is there an online feature that we can make a simple campagne to get used to playing

so me and my friends made some characters on dnd beyond and want to use them in a campange. is there a way to put them in or do we have to make characters?
Put them in what, exactly?
my friend started a campain but it says to create a new character
I'm not super familiar with DnD Beyond, but I believe you friend will have to add you all to that campaign. Then, you can assign those characters you made to that campaign.
ok thank you we will try
If you need help with the technical aspect of D&D beyond specifically we have a channel for that: #ddb-support
You can post any issues or questions there and someone will help you out
I’m writing my own campaign for the first time, is there anything I should know for like what to add? Like how many quests, or anything like that
There's no one-size-fits-all approach to making a campaign. #dm-discussion would be the better channel to get in-depth conversation on this topic.
the best tip i have is write a world, not a story
And that world doesn't have to be a planet! It can be a continent, a region, or even just a city or town.
YES
THIS
(unless players decide to cast teleportation circle and you cry)
idk how to phrase that one
Technically not new to DnD anymore but VERY new to evoker wizard. How exactly do you play one 😭
Are you new to Wizard or just Evoker?
Uhh spellcasters in general. I have literally only played monk and nothing else for the entirety of the time I have played DnD
Evoker's one of the easiest Wizard subclasses you'll do just fine
Have you by chance read in the entry for Wizard in the PHB?
Part of a good Wizard is swapping spells on the fly based on the situation
This is technically for 2014's rules, but I believe it's still relevant: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/209-wizard-101-a-beginners-guide-to-the-arcane-arts
Not yet, what's it say?
It says things that will help you understand 🙂
Oh really? That's good. I might still charge into battle out of reflex tho 😭 that's what I'm worried about
Eyyy thank you
All your spells have high range so you can stay behind just fine
Evoker basically comes down to
My teammates are resistant towards my own friendly fire
Cantrips will always do some damage
Cantrips hit harder
You always roll the highest damage roll on most spells once per long rest
Hello, I’m new to dnd and I wonder if it’s weird to want to spectate dnd sessions to learn…?
You'll always be doing something so long as you have the fundamentals down
Rather than spectating actual games it may be more practical to watch videos of people streaming their sessions
But the best way to learn is to try things out directly
Nope. You can find recorded games on YouTube and live ones on Twitch.
Sweet, I do love damage
Very much not weird. Heck probably a lot of us watch DnD on twitch or play podcasts of it so it's actually pretty common
Yeah but I was wondering if I could spectate like in servers and calls. Since I really want to play and join in but too shy to start
Why not vids though
I’ve watched some vids!! and I enjoy them but it’s like step by step, where I watch vids and then join calls to spectate to work my confidence in actually playing a game
That's a bit more complicated. Without like the virtual tabletop and the dice and stuff, you end up imagining most of what happens. You don't really learn the best using that way
Ohhh I didn’t know that, my one time experience playing dnd was imagination and using bots
Its pretty unlikely that you'll find a group that's willing to let you spectate. It may make people feel uncomfortable, since putting yourself out there as a character you are portraying is hard, even without outside observers. If you can find a group that's willing to let you do it, then you do you. But I expect 95% of people will say no. However, there are plenty of people that record or steam themselves playing, so that you can watch it on sites like youtube or twitch
You see idk about a lot of people being fine with someone watching them that way
Not to diss on theater of the mind, but from my experience DnD is so much more fun when you can see what is happening somewhat
Colossus took the words out of my keyboard!
I guess its like watching the olympics vs watching a few randos swimming in a pool by themselves
Plus yeah, not a lot of people are willing to let you just watch them. They are right
Mm Alright, I guess I was pretty naive thinking I could ask to just spectate a call
more like people who do soccer often versus a kids team, i wouldnt compare it to the olympics
personally I never had issues with people wanting to spetacte as a player (on an online call), but most of the other players didn't want to. so I guess it could be pretty hard to have people willing to do so xD
It's alright. You just wanna learn after all, but DnD is a very hands-on game after all that needs a lot concentration sometimes to do stuff like roleplay. Just watching also ain't the best way to learn, playing it for real with someone is by far the best way
I understand it’s valid, a stranger watching you is horrifying while you’re trying to play out a scene
Hi everyone! I need some help. My work is hosting a secret Santa and my gift recipient asked for Christmas scratch cards. Now I’m not a fan of just giving scratch cards so I asked around about his hobbies and found out he likes dnd. I know absolutely nothing about the game wanted to know if anyone had some recommendations
any idea how to make a post to look for DMs? im a new player thats also gathering more new players to hopefully have our first game with someone who has a little more experience to get a hang of it
Step 1. Go to any channel where you can type.
Step 2. Type /looking.
Step 3. Highlight the channel you want to post in.
Step 4. Hit Enter.
Step 5. Fill out the form you're directed to.
Step 6. Hit Enter.
If it doesn't work, you may need to enable embeds and/or reinstall your Discord client.
Ooo, you should get him a new set of dice. We DnD players always love a new set of dice
If posting here, be sure to say something about yourself in the Optional Info space, few players seem to, by doing so, you stand out
Okay cool cool. I got a velvet pouch so the dice will pair nicely
Dice or a journal are safe bets ince you probably don't know what books are needed and/or if they play online versus in-person (and thus what tools they need/prefer).
You might also be able to find some kind of D&D themed Christmas scratch card, but I'm not sure what the options would be
Dang I wish I knew more about the guy
I know they make D&D advent calendars, cause I've got one
That would be genuinely sick
Might get one
Don’t know where but I’ll try to find one
I tried googling D&D scratch cards and the Emergency D20 scratch cards could be a fun option
Barnes & Noble has an official one: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dungeons-dragons-insight-editions/1140975646?ean=9781647226213
I'm sure bookstores and big box stores would have similar options.
That reminds me, I should really open today on my calendar 😁
I’m new to dnd where can I find people who would playing dnd and really like to role play and have fun ?

@solar solar Check out the rules above and #learn-to-play!
And feel free to ask any questions you may have here, we’re happy to help
The things you need for D&D:
- A group (and a way to communicate with them)
- The rules
- Dice (or other means of randomly generating numbers)
- A way to track character info (usually a character sheet)
- An adventure (whether one prewritten or one the DM makes up)
Everything else is optional.
I have my character sheet, then what should i do?
Do you know the rules? Do you have a group to play with?
No.. Im new in here, already interested for a long time, but afraid to start (i dont have friend who like this kinda game).
I know some of the rules, try to memorize rn
So you either learn the rules next or find folks to game with (read #find-a-game).
Personally, I would recommend learning the rules first (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024). It'll increase the chances you get invited to a game and shows you're serious, rather than expecting others to bring you up to speed. Having questions is great, but doing no legwork on your own doesn't make a good first impression, y'know?
The rules are different, but you can find folks still using the 2014 rules. My tables do.
Okay, thanks for the info!
Good luck and happy adventuring!

Welcome!
are there rules to making dnd ocs (or whatever its called)?
i JUST noticed the message above me
Characters? Yes. See the 2nd chapter of the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
?tag new sheet
Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
oh thank you
im on step one and i already know i'll need to look into this later
Yeah no worries - take your time.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Le0_3_156828852.pdf Does this look any good to anyone that can help
I was just asking in character discussion and I was wondering if I could get some more helpfull tips
Looks pretty solid, one small thing is there no way for you to start with a 16 in charisma? Usually its nice to statt with +3 in your main stat
Also i believe your ac should be 13 not 12, 11 base from leather armor and +2 from dexterity
yeah dont forget to write down your armor in your inventory in case you start with one
i have one as well, im not too sure abt it but i like playing support roles in most games but i cant send the link cause the bot blocks it
I believe thats what 'leather'is
im not sure what to do after seeing the first one tho cause mines so ass compared to it😥
Like the bot message said, looks like you just joined you need to wait a bit
yeah ik
just waiting it out
its a wood elf druid tho, i was told they synergise well
Other then the charisma and ac looks good for a level 1 character
looks good to me, your items could be sorted better but you have a fairly well balanced character
3 15's starting off is pretty good, a +3 mod in main stat would be nice, but +2 is servicable
should I make the charisma higher then?
found a link loophole
If possible yes, did you do point buy?
its your main stat as a bard
Humans get 2x +1 right?
no, its based off background in 2024
Ooowh yeh that stuff
+2 and +1 or +1 x3
Hello!
Havent played 2024, is there a similar rule to tashas for 2014 where you can move the stats around freely?
I'm looking for a D&D friend to help me along the way
unsure, for backgrounds you generally decide how to spread those bonuses between 3 stats, dependent on the background. So for Farmer for instance you can distribute your stat bonuses between Str, Con, and Wis
if there is a rule for custom background im not aware of it
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Le0_3_156828852.pdf Do the stats look any better
Well in that case a 15 starting charisma is basically unavoidable
Its pretty easy to follow the format to make a custom background though
Are you using point buy? I forget what you stats were previously
8, 15, 15, 10, 12, 15 was it?
yes
if so then taking away 2 point from con wont make up enough points to add another two to charisma
the point cost goes up the higher you make the stat
do you have a point buy calculator your using?
well actually, let me double check
I was using standard array not point buy
ah ok, thats different
do you reckon i should use point buy
well i mean its up to your dm how you guys are deciding stats
standard array is a valid point buy setup, so you can absolutely use it if you want
I still need to find people to play with
oh well thats probably the first step lol
ok thank you
hard to decide how to make your character if you dont know how your dm wants you to generate stats. If you want to design the character conceptually with stats to prepare for a future game thats totally valid though

Both standard array and point buy are good starting points as these methods provide more mechanical balance. Especially since DMs generally don’t accept pre-rolled stats.
I find standard array are the best well balanced while point buy lets you get more power but you sacrifice versitility
Since you are already using dnd beyond’s. You can click the manage button to get a shareable link that you can send instead. As that can allow others to see more details of your character sheet.
Here is an example https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/144422601/ZwFAkD
Should I take charger for my next feat? With my class (swashbuckler rogue) it’s basically guaranteed to trigger every attack. That’s a +5 to all my damage rolls
The only issue is that it takes my bonus action
hiiii
Hi guys ! I’m super new to DND and I’m just trying to learn the roles and everything so I can make a character. I have an idea kind of of what I want, but I’m still super new and kind of know nothing. I’m also wondering where I can play if there’s something online that I can play online with other people or if it’s more in person thing, I literally would just need someone to text me all of this or maybe even call in discord or something and just run down as much information as you can, lol

I already have slasher to prevent people from catching up to me
I’d say it depends on your play style.
Some players love that because it avoids repeating the same moves every turn.

Actually, it wouldn’t help at all all with that. I’d be triggering it every turn
Unless I needed my bonus action for some reason

The bot posts above have great resources to help you get started. There is also #find-a-game that has instructions for getting a bot to make you a thread.
I already posted a LF DM
Actually #character-discussion or #optimization would fit better for character builds
Then I’d recommend being proactive and looking at posts made by DMs looking for players.
DMs are tend to have players go to them when forming groups.
I find the best way to get a campaign is to beg ask your friends if they're interested
ive never played dnd before i am learning to be a dm i plan to play with my irl freinds who dont know anything about dnd im going to use a premade campaign how do i go about describing buildings or rooms do the books or posts have them described or do i just improve it
The biggest issue I had was over describing, tell the players what they'd need to know to get the point across and any details you really want to convey, but let hem have their own image in their mind
the books should have some descriptions made for you too
I've never used a premade campaign. However, think as being a DM in a campaign more or less as a story teller
I think the DM's guide has that
Another DM here, also have never done a premade campaign, but would probably recommend it to beginner DM’s
I've only ever done 1 premade and it was the one that came iwth the starter pack with the PHB
also if i have to teach them how to play should i read the player guide aswell as the dm guide

But even dungeon masters should know the info in the PHB
Read the Free Basic Rules, though, all of you

Anyone have a party that me and my friends can join? We're new and want to learn this beautiful game.
Check #looking-for-players (and make sure to read #find-a-game)
Yes. However, the DM guide should only be used for the DM. the player's handbook can be past around though the table, including you as the DM. As for teaching players. The players will tend to look to you for advice.
Alright
those are the ones on the dnd official website right?
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Just realised UndyingNoob’s message link just sent to #learn-to-play and not specifically to the rules, so here
ok thx
Premade campaigns will have descriptions marked for you to read. Depending on the adventure book, you’ll also find pictures that can help you find the right words to describe.
honestly, the DM should read the PHB, the MM, and the DMG. not memorize. that is a lot to demand for any ttrpg thats supposed to be fun.
That is true, I more so meant knowing the rough information in the PHB
How do you post in looking for DM channel
But I did phrase that misleading by accident
Do /looking-for DM
i didnt mean you mislead, its just a common thing that new people often think "read" means memorize.
Ah I see
there's a whole lot that needs to be made up on the spot, though. players will most times come up with something not in the book. just make sure you record what you said that was different and keep things consistent. you can deviate from what's written in adventures.
True, players can often do things not expected in the book. Though within the context of of describing buildings and rules the, premade adventure books tend to provide decent enough descriptions as a starting point.
i just realized that was supposed to be a reply to what drizzle said.
You still can
right. and there's a number of things within reason too
With the unpredictability of players, that too can be at least partially mitigated by communicating expectations.
like if there's a desk in an office, the adventure doesn't specifically need to state what's on the desk other than what's needed for the adventure. so regular office type things could be mentioned as being on the desk to increase immersion without actually changing the adventure. whether there's some mundane papers listing receipts for hay bales or an address book with the names of various restaurants in a far off city doesn't derail things.
I don't see my post in looking for dm
For example, in keys to the golden vault the main focus is about conducting heist’s.
In that type of campaign the players are expected to make characters that are thieves and not necessarily all pick the rouge class.
you need to select roles in the channels & roles first. then you need to read up on stuff in the #find-a-game channel which should tell you how to post in the #looking-for-dm channel. its a multi-step process.
hehe that's my favorite adventure book to run
True. Plus often times the context of the adventure provides DMs something to work with.
For example, if it is the desk of a baron that is poor but is still trying to keep up appearances.
The outer desk and top drawer can look pristine and full of expensive looking items.
The lower drawers may contain overdue bills, or low quality items.
I see your post. It’s right here #looking-for-dm message
I haven’t run it but I’ve heard good things.
I love it but I do have some personal (minor) gripes but that'd probably be spoilers
Yea that tends to be the case. Some more than others.
For new groups I Highly recommend Dragon of Icespire Peak. I finally got around to running and I really enjoyed it.
Though if I were to run it a second time around, I would adjust some things.
My girlfriend is actually running that 👀 it's her first time DMing and she seems to be a natural with that book. And i can definitely see how it'd be a good adventure for new players
-# hey, just saying, is anyone here a newcomer
Im not a new player or DM but going over some premade adventures that cater to new players and DMs does fit within the context of this channel.
I’m not saying it doesn’t, was just curious
At least that is the hope.
Well, the channel is meant to answer questions for newcomers if I recall

Quick question, how do spell slots work?
To my understanding its kinda like a limit of spells you can cast before needing to rest to do it again, im not entirely sure
Spell slots are basically a number of how many times you can cast spells of a certain level before needing a long rest. If you use both level 9 spell slots, you'll still be able to use your level 8 and below spell slots with no problems. Cantrips don't have spell slots and can be used as often as you like.
ahh kk
Where would I go to join a dnd campaign
hey so i have no idea how to play dnd would i need to have like a book of rules and know everything or would i just learn as i play

Hey i'm new in the beautifull world of DnD and i have a question, i choose a bard, and can i choose an instrument who exist in DnD or can i take whatever instrument of music who exist in life ?
Most DM’s will allow any instrument
(That is portable)
hellooo
Okay so i can use a Keytar ?
Only if it could logically exist in the setting
Hallo
Yeah this isn’t completely correct sorry, it should be any instrument that fits with the setting
Ok it's the DM who have too choose the settings ? Sorry it's new for me
Ok thanks a lot
I'm a newbie in Dnd, and I wonder where could we find like campaigns to join?
I’m also a new it but I’d love to get into DND, any campaign I could join?
Check out #find-a-game for guidance on finding a group here
Perhaps if it was something like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orphica
so kinda stupid question but im looking to play a human for my first campaign and was wondering if for the language species trait i had to choose the one my party is speaking or if i choose like goblin or ogre or something would i still be able to talk to my party
By default all player characters know Common, plus two other languages: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ChooseLanguages
ok thanks
Yes is that it ! It is possible so ?
It's near to keytar
hi all, i am here to learn about dnd, total noob here, thanks to the legend of vox machina i an so interested in dnd now, hope to learn a lot
It's not really the kind of thing most DMs will worry about. As long as it looks like a traditional instrument, I think you'll be fine.
Ok thanks you !
does anyone have a campaign i can join? i would love to start

Thank you! I’ve watched a few but it’s like anything lotta info to try to absorb
Yeah - take your time, also use #learn-to-play and the free basic rules to read along with it.
But also note you do not have to know it all or feel like you have to memorize it.
But knowing what a D20 Test is, and how to create a character sheet (and how to read and use your character sheet) are good places to focus.
(The core game rules and mechanics and the rhythm of play can be found in chapter 1 of the free rules and chapter 2 covers how to make a character step by step)
Thank you! I’ve been starting to read up through the beyond app, so far so good I think.
Hi, I'm new to DnD but have been running a club at my work for SEN children. I think I'm doing okay as a DM, the kids seem to be haviong a good time, but I feel like a don't have a grasp on everything I should know. Are there any dedicated games to helping new players learn the game?
Question relating to combat: to what extent can attacks be aimed? Like, if I specifically wanted to shoot someone in the neck with an arrow, or slash their eyes, or break their leg, could I do that?
Not within the current ruleset, there are homebrew rules I imagine for called shots.
Right, thanks.
How can I post in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm ?

Hey so im making my character sheet and it's a wood elf, i searched it's features online and it has like 7, isn't that too much?
So i used the basic elf features and added the level 1 ranger features so for now the character has 6 features
Hmm I don't think any amount of features is too much, but that depends on what you are doing/going to do with it
Until you have a D&D group to play with who may have different ways to set up and run characters for their D&D games, it's best to stay with the core game rules
You can use the free D&D basic rules to practice with: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules

Yes.

Hi, I was wandering something. I'm french and I'd like to improve my english while learning to play Dnd. Do you think it's a good idea and do you know if someone is opening a table for dnd but also english begginers lol ?
Actually maybe the "Lol is a bit too much"
Quality > Quantity, there's some really situational perks on the Wood Elf
Mask of the Wild is v situational for starters
Elf Weapon Training is situational too cuz martial classes have built in proficiency with the weapons listed so the only few classes that appreciate this is spellcasters early on
Rest are nice but nothing too op, faster move speed and darkvision is excellent to have
Your written English looks good. If you're looking for a game using voice, that would be something to discuss with the group you find.
I like it. Plenty of adventures in the wilderness, settled places tend to have some greenery around. It's not universal but I feel it's got enough scope to be helpful.
I was just wondering, I’ve never played d&d before, do most people play by official dnd rules or house rules?
Some people may as one or two individual house rules, but the game DnD itself is a set of rules. If you're playing DnD, you're using the rules.
Correct.
Typically house rules are the icing on the official cake rules
Cool
The word you're looking for to describe this second one here is Tabletop Role Playing Game (TTRPG).
DnD is a TTRPG, just like Skyrim is a Video Game.
no one plays 100% exactly as written, but some tables have more house rules than others.
overall, dnd 5e places a lot of weight on "rulings, not rules" A Game Master is supposed to rule things for their group, not blindly follow the letters written in the book. especially since not every situation is covered by the rules
are there tables specified for newcomers ?
Well, there are some lower complexity classes, like fighter, that have less mechanical stuff to worry about.
An approximate list is here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
Anyone know where I can get the players guide, monster manual and the dms guide for cheaper, I don’t re

Hi new to DND wonder what campaign is a good start in DND for new players have started reading rule book but see alot of campaign options
what do i have to put in the last page of the 5e character sheet about spells?
The various Starter Sets are designed just for this purpose
List the spells your character has prepared. What class and level are you?
No harm in writing them in advance. You get two level one ranger spells. Cure Wounds and Ensnaring Strike are recommended.
Oh cool :0
What do i write in spellcasting ability, spell save dc and spell attack bonus?
Wisdom is your spellcasting ability. Your spell save DC is 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom bonus. Your spell attack bonus is equal to your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom bonus.
Thank you :D
currently trying to find an unpaid campagin with pbp, its kind of hard to, is it because of the system in place?
older messages show ads typed by people instead of it being relayed through monodrone, so..
They've been using the bot for over a year so I don't think that's the issue
PBP games are generally rarer but should be advertised the same way here
With the bot post and then anything extra typed in the linked thread
I’m trying to make sense of something. My partner is doing a Strahd campaign and I’m gonna do an Undying ancestry drow who’s a Pact of Undead warlock. I’m currently kinda thinking of her being a “failed experiment” kind of thing which is what made her Undying, but I’m trying to figure out how the “pact” aspect would work.
I see, maybe its because im going by discord search feature to look for one?
i frogot to reply but (@main fulcrum)
If you search for PBP in the #looking-for-players channel, it'll search both the threads and the bot posts
So you're probably just getting all the results mixed together
Check out Roll20, that lets you filter results for games played by text.
What part of the Undead patron is confusing you?
alr!
Also what Undying ancestry are you talking about (where's that from)
Trying to understand how that dynamic would work, I think. I’ve played a few sessions in the past, but not enough to be an average player. I know meta game mechanics fairly well but I’m just struggling to figure out how a patron would likely come into play for my character.
In Van Richtens there is an ancestry trait where the race is basically a Reborn variant.
Sorry. I’m stupid. I meant Reborn. Reborn drow who is Undead pact
Ah, reborn yeah. Just wanted to make sure you weren't mixing up Undying and Undead warlock.
And I'm not sure you really need to worry about the dynamic. The mechanical side of it is just what the subclass gives you and any patron involvement is something you should discuss with your DM
I guess I'm still not getting what you're worried about tbh
Hey guys. I am someone who has been interested in dnd and I would like to know how can i get started ?

A warlock patron can be exactly as involved or not involved as you want them to be
She’s a first time DM so I’m just wanting to do my part to understand it I guess 😅 I think I’m articulating badly. I guess with what I was considering so far, I was thinking of my character being lowkey like the was intended to be like a magical super weapon, of sorts - manufactured by some magic technology dudes or something to be used for nefarious deeds! But as something happened to interrupt the ritual or whatever, she was able to get away but with no memories and being afflicted with undeath and horrible powers or something. I was thinking perhaps she has the heart of a powerful vampire lich or something along those lines, but that’s what I’m trying to figure out still. But I think it would make plot sense as to how she has her powers and is a Reborn, but idk
I’m sorry, I’m very likely overthinking it 😵💫
All of that sounds like perfectly fine backstory stuff to me
I guess my first question would be, do you actually want your patron to be an active part of the game? Nothing in the rules requires it
Possibly? Since it’s Strahd campaign, i think it would fit thematically. I guess im just wanting opinions on how that would look at the table, for instance.
But I’m glad it doesn’t sound entirely whack so far at least
Im in
Where can I quickly find people to play with in dnd beyond?
I just created a character.
Quickly probably isn't going to happen. But you can check #find-a-game for how to look here
For what it's worth, Roll20 has listings for pickup games. Zero guarantees as to quality, naturally. The Beyond20 extension on Chrome can send your DDB rolls to the VTT.

Hello 👉👈 I’m new
G'day! What's on your mind?
-# Where's Nugget when I need him?
Nugget?
Helloo
Don't worry about it.
Oh i know who your talking about friend
May I have a question? What is the longest (word-wise) acceptable backstory for a character? I might have got a bit too excited?
It varies from person to person, some people like an autobiography, some people like a short and simple and straight to the point backstory, some prefer it somewhere in between
Most DMs like a paragraph
Is a... how would I say it, 2200 word essay consisting of eight paragraphs describing a movie like sequence of events normal? 😭
Your best bet is to check with your DM, because it will vary depending on their preference.
If you're the only one reading it, as long as you want. If you expect the DM to read it, summarize
That might be a little much lol.
With some players yes, ratat said it perfectly. You can make it as intricate as you want, but giving a "in short, this is my characters story" summary is helpful for the DM
Well, I'm not sure if another paragraph of text summarizing the story won't scare him? I'll definitely provide one if he asks for a shorter summary. Tbh I don't even know how it got that long. He just said he will give a magic item to the coolest/most useful backstory and my brain came up with a movie script 🤷♂️ He hasn't responded yet though, at least not about the backstory.
Put an abstract at the beginning of the story, because while a few people do enjoy longer backstories even they would appreciate a summary for them to refer to.
i’m at a library right now, should i buy the monster manual, players handbook, or essentials kit ?
For the most bang for your buck I’d go with the PHB
Are you a DM, player, or both?
i am a dm
Get the core books - PHB, DMG, MM, probably in that order if you couldn't get all of them at once
is the essentials kit necessary at all ?
Only if you want to run that adventure
It's nice but you can live without it
If you want to hide your rolls, crucial
Also useful as a sort of "heads-up display" for commonly needed info like Conditions
You can absolutely make your own
Some DMs don't use them at all
I use my laptop 💻
Cuz DM screens are…pricey.
(Like, I roll behind my laptops screen, not online. Plus, it holds my notes)
im not new to dnd but how do u dm? ive run a couple one shots but im still not the best
You just keep doing, failing, and getting better
Ask players for feedback when you can, what they liked and didn’t like
Oh, and ask for help for specific things, and remember to work with your players and not against them
DMing is kind alike improv. You set a theme, and then the most important part is not saying "no" to some wild ideas, but rather "you can certainly try". The whole "yes, but" spiel makes the game much funnier and fluid. The door has a lock. They dont have the key. Can the bard try to hit the resonance frequency to blow up the lock? Sure, whatever, have a DC 24 performance DC for that. Can they try to befriend the landshark with orc-steaks? Maybe. Can they raise a ghoul as a vegan? Heck sure go ahead. Most of these plans are doomed to fail, and catastrophic even if they dont (what do they feed the bulette after they run out of orc?). But its about having fun first. Once you get more experience under your belt you can back up denials of plans with rules, but its ok to mess up and allow stuff like animal handling for monstrosities now and then
The story is written by them together with you as a DM. Both sides should have fun with it. If you feel you arent having fun with their thematic approach to things (beastmaster players that befriend everything, murderhobos that kill all your cool NPCs, brainrot meme character builders) communicate, learn what works for each other and adapt. Sometimes it needs a couple of sessions for a group to jell and complement each other
also, do not allow yourself to enter an active antagonistic playstyle. As nugget already said, you work with them. Yes, you throw dragons at them and put traps in their way, but ultimatly you dont want them to lose the campaign. Because then its over. And you have the power of god and anime on your side, and they can only expect to be given a challenge, not a badly written official module that encourages throwing fireballs at level 2 players. If you start thinking about how you can "get them", I am afraid you might accidentally murder them all with a "challenge" that went out of hand when they rolled bad one time
/looking-for dm
Oh wow tysm
Obviously you're not going to become "the best" after just two one-shots. Use makes master, keep going, learn from your mistakes, learn from other DMs.

I didn’t mean the best literally lol I meant like good
thats the channel to find players, while the dude did say he has a group he runs for
Question!!! Does anyone know good online DnD groups based in the UK? I'm disabled so actually traveling for campaigns weekly or even monthly simply isn't suitable for me, especially with the area I'm in most of them (that I've found anyway!) Are at least a hour away, but I've been trying to find online ones that are based more for older teens, it's been a struggle to try to find groups that have a older age range without it being massively all over the place so I figured to ask here if anyone knows!
I know they exist, but I can’t point you to one. Maybe check out #looking-for-players posts that fit with your Timezone, or make a post on #looking-for-dm . The info on how to do so is on #find-a-game .

anyone got a few tips on how to get into the game without any experience?
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
thanks pal
first time playing dnd and was wondering if this backstory is too edgy (the gm told me the world was freezing over due to a curse)
Deep within a hidden forest untouched by time, a being of bark and spirit grew among trees older than kingdoms. The forest was saturated with ancient magic, strong enough to resist the eternal frost that consumed the outside world. While ice strangled the land beyond, this sanctuary remained alive, green, and unbroken.
That sanctuary could not remain secret forever. A desperate kingdom, drained of resources, discovered the forest and marched upon it to strip away its bounty. Axes split sacred trunks, flames licked across roots, and the shroud of magic faltered. With the devastation came ruin—the frost finally seeped into the soil, choking the last haven of life.
From the ashes of that destruction emerged a lone survivor, carrying the memory of a lost forest. Born of ancient wood and living spirit, this being first sought vengeance for the sanctuary’s destruction. Yet in wandering the frozen world, the truth became clear: the outskirts of his old forest weren't the only thing affected by an expanding frost. The Great Frost Fall had condemned all vegetation, leaving only pale snow where life once thrived.
Now, driven by grief, fury, and a stubborn will to endure, this living tree walks among mortals. Torn between the fire of revenge and the grief for the downfall of nature itself.
I was thinking about doing a home brew necromancer that has a pact with a vulture demon and the way they revive the dead is by cleaning the bones of them and depending on how clean the bones are(how much meat is left on them) the skeletons would get weaker or stronger so like if it kind of like a zombie it would be way weaker then normal but if it’s a completely clean skeleton it would be about 25% stronger then it was when it was alive. but I don’t really know what class or race to use would I use warlock?
Standard caveat: if you're new to the game, you should probably steer clear of homebrew until you understand how things work in their default state.
That said, warlock does sound like it'd be appropriate given the pact (on top of the general spooky vibe).
...too late...
Thanks i am fairly new but i think my DM would most likely be about to help with things i dont know and if you could can you recommend a race you think would fit
I do think that'd be interesting flavor, thoughh
Any race can be any class, and nothing in your description points to one species over any other.
Pick whatever seems interesting or fun to you!
Ok thanks
Hey guys, I’m new too. I got a question, is there any bow or similar that’s strength based? I got an idea for my first character but when I searched how bows worked it said the stat was DEX
Hello!!
I'm new to DnD, can someone help me out??
Bows are Dex, yes. Most strength based ranged attacks are with thrown weapons

Is there an issue with dexterity?
Nah, it’s just that irl you need to be fairly strong to use bows, so I wanted to make a character based on that. Normally the big muscular guy is a barbarian or a fighter, so I wanted to make him an archer instead.
Yeah, dnd ain’t very realistic
You could describe your character as brawny but still use Dex as your main stat. If you also want to be mechanically strong AND be good with a bow, though, you'll probably have to make sacrifices elsewhere.
I second this
is there any newbie table?
Welp, sacrifices will be made then.
Yes
That's the fun thing about making a simulationist game: you gotta decide what's actually simulated and what is just inferred between the frames
The strength it takes to draw a bow just happens to be something DnD isn't too concerned with
I think some have the heavy property
True, but heavy property for bows doesn't involve strength either
Hey
Howdy
Archery is all in the back muscles, lol. You can still describe an archer as wiry looking.
👋🏼
heyy, can i ask? on the character sheet, can we make a custom action base on what we want to do?will it be too op?
Custom action on the DDB sheet is typically to put something there that is very specific, or otherwise not granted by a class feature, or a feat.
You wouldn't quite make up an entirely new thing just because
We'd also probably need context because "custom action" could be anything
Like if its something like a custom "climb rope" action you wouldn't need that because that's already covered in the rules.
On the other end of the spectrum it's something like "snap neck" where the action is an instakill effect then yeah that's too OP.
It's worth specifying to see if we can find an already existing game option for what you're trying to do. Otherwise custom actions can be answered by a blanket "up to your DM."
heyyy
Hi
how can i get someones opinion on my campaign its my first once im making and i wanna know if its too little or too much for a session 0
like do we have to follow the players handbook or can it all be made up maybe with just inspiration
A session zero doesn’t usually involve gameplay
okiii
You mean session 1?
ig but how do i start a session 0 then
I recommend following the rules of the game
HI!!! I've been thinking about your question & I have been writing a answer! But it's ended up being quite lengthy so I figured to ask if you'd like me to send it? It has a suggestion of a short campaign to possibly try out, alongside a example of how rolling for certain things would work in DnD 🙏
Session zero is just discussing boundaries at the table, as well as possibly making characters together
wheres the best place to learn the rules
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

hey everyone. fairly new to DND. just played my first session with a friend that was visiting so unfortunately it was a one and done type situation. we played for about 4 hrs just to get the hang of the basics. looking forward to meeting new ppl and possibly joining some campaigns
Nice to have ya here!
someone taught me the basics but i forgor, id like to join something if yall got patient peeps
xoxo
Check out #find-a-game for more info on that
yee ive been pointed there before
I have a question! How do character sheets work? This is extremely vague I know 😨 but I mean more like, well example for grog in Vox machina, he has a intelligence of 3-6 I believe? How does that work figuring out someones skills in certain things? How do you decide the level of their skill?
Since using grog as a example once more, how different would having a level 3 intelligence be compared to level 6? Like how much do levels in skills truly affect things?
I might be wording it wrong saying "levels" but I'm not sure how else to word it at the moment unfortunately 🥹
because also im a hands on learner or having an actual instructor instead of reading something ill still be so confused*
Have ya read the rules? They might be able to help ya better than I can
That channel helps you find games
Have you watched any campaigns? That might help getting a feel for it if your unable to find games at the moment 🙏
And by playing you might be able to learn to play
not really into watching
Unfortunately most people here just don’t have the time to do one on one tutoring
Or just don’t want that commitment
welp ig this is not my forte then take care yall
I've definitely had a look at certain rules of DnD but I don't believe I've went through the entire rules, I figured though to see if anyone who has experience could help give a example 🙏 but if not that's completely okay! I'm just trying to get more involved in the social space
I think I can summarise a character sheet
Thank you!
Basically, it’s just a bunch of information on what your character can do and how well they can do it. It includes your stats, which help determine your modifier.
Are you familiar with skill checks?
At a mechanical level your stats mainly determine what bonuses you'll have to certain actions. At a narrative/RP level your stats don't have to represent how your character acts/is, but many players to anyway
Basically, for skill checks you roll a d20, and then add your modifier on that. That modifier is determined by your stats (every 2 stats away from 10 you get a +1, so a 16 is a +3), and if you’re proficient in the skill you add your proficiency modifier. This proficiency bonus is dependent on your level.
yeah idek about how to find the right people, if nobody is willing to teach a "physical/hands on learner then im sol
worth a shot ig
does bard class is okay for first time? i like to play sup and heal, but some people is not recommended it
An Int of 3 means you'll have a -4 to Int-related d20 tests, an Int of 6 means you'd have a -2 penalty instead
It’s fine. A bit more complex cause it’s a full caster, but it’s learnable
The best class to start out with is the one that interests you the most. It's not the simplest class to learn but being invested in playing something you want will help you learn better than trying to play something you don't
^This is better put
really just got to learn the rolling with char stats and stuff thats what they taught me before, and ik they have a guide or something of that nature but eh i tried im not gonna keep bothering yall bc ill flood this chat bc i type like a dum
❤️
thanksss
Typically rolled stats are only done under DM supervision to prevent cheating. Without a DM we usually recommend using Standard Array or Point Buy
The guide you're looking for is the Basic Rules, found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/
The 2024 guide is especially helpful in laying the foundation before guiding you through character creation
"sigh"
i dont work good with just reading guides its a bunch of jumble, i need someone to work with me
even last time they explained i had issues so me just reading isnt gonna work thats the whole issue
nvm this prob isnt gonna work
You might be able to find a table that's ok with it then. Even if a group doesn't explicitly advertise them as newbie friendly it's always good to ask.
is so hard to memorize all the rule...
if anyone sees this and is willing just dm me ig
You don’t have to memorise all of them
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away!
i sware im talking to myself, learn how "myself?" again i dont learn that way
Skill checks do sound familiar but I'm not entirely sure if I have the correct understanding of it if that makes sense, how do modifiers work exactly? Sorry if these seem like silly questions! I am completely new to the game so it's all new to me 🥹 but what would be a example of someone rolling for something? Say, someone (their role being a rogue) wanted to sneak into a bakery, from a DM perspective what would you ask the player to doll for?
Don't worry too much about memorizing everything. To have a familiarity is usually better, especially when you know where to look if you forget something
just nvm 🙁
No need to apologise for being new!
Again if you want in-game teaching try to apply to games and see if the DM is willing to teach
I would ask them to roll for a Stealth (dexterity) check
Let’s say DC 14
That means that their roll after modifiers must meet or beat 14
Okay, so using a average 20 dice they have to get at least 14 to successfully sneak in?
I explained how modifiers are done here
A 14 after modifiers, yes
Skill checks are a kind of d20 Test. The basic idea is:
- The player describes what they're trying to do
- The DM determines if the action is possible & has a reasonable degree of failure, or if there's significant degrees of failure/success.
- The DM determines what skill may apply to the action.
- The DM sets a DC based on the difficulty of the action.
- The player rolls their check, adds any relevant modifiers, and compares the result to the DC to determine failure/success.
if we are looking fo a DM, do we need already have a full player?
I don’t believe so
Thank you for explaining! I got a bit confused at the bit when it came to the modifiers but I can possibly figure it out looking up things based on the explanation
