No
How come?
Spells and cantrips only do what they say they do
And it’s takes ages to drown in dnd5e
More than an hour?
If you want to try to convince a DM you can do it
But with shape water you can animate the water just around the things head
I'll try lol
And then the creature steps forward 5 feet and is no longer in the water
But the waters animated do it follows them 😈
Does the spell/cantrip say that? Many people had had these weird ideas as to what they can do with spells and they never work outside of memes/youtube shorts
Ok I'll go look for it in one of the books brb
Ok you can't animate it onto others
Just yourself
You can move it 5 feet and make it into a shape or freeze it
But now I have another question if I move the water into a things head than freeze it do they explode from the ice taking up more volume?
No cause if you read the spell you can’t freeze it if a creature is occupying that space
Crap
You are playing dnd you can shoot firebolt from your hands or kill someone by just telling them a joke there is no need to come up with weird way of using a utility cantrip
Yes there is
Its because funny
I'll think of more in time
Could I make a grenade out of it?
Like fill a brittle case full to the brim with water and freeze the water and the increased volume of the ice blows the material apart making shrapnel
Ok I’ll entertain you a bit further so let’s say you kill a goblin with ray of frost, you DM might ask you how you do it and that’s when you can get a bit creative and say “ I target the goblins head and it encases in Ice and they they fall dead “
Nah too boring I need the enjoyment from using the spell wrong
But no a utility cantrip like shape water can’t make a granade, turn a creatures blood to Ice, drown someone etc etc
Then you'd need to find a DM who also finds enjoyment from that.
Most I know would probably rather be annoyed, including myself. DnD isn't a physics simulator and treating it like one just leads to arguments.
😔
Can u mold earth on top of an enemy whose fallen into a pit then dump a bunch of water on them and freeze it with shape water to bury them?
I understand your enthusiasm for this, but this exact thing is something that interests a lot of beginners, and endlessly frustrates anyone that has more experience with the game. Its even expressly written into the Dungeon Master's Guide to not allow players to do things like this
You'd have to make like a lid other it
Edit- I wrote kid instead of lid
So I’ve done one-shots and short campaigns for a while and am interested in trying West Marches-style play. Anybody have any advice on how to be a good player/get the most out of it?
How about using it to defeat locks?
I thought of another shape water thing
Spells do what they say they do. If the spell does not say it can be used to destroy an object, then it cannot be used to destroy an object
You could ask in #dnd-rules
If you're interested in how long. .
If the person cannot hold their breath, it takes about 6 rounds (about 36 seconds), but if they quickly can take a breath, this won't even start for 30 seconds (+5 combat rounds) to 11 minutes (+110 Combat Rounds) depending on CON scores. Some races like Plasmoid can even hold their breath for an hour.
For the details on this, see Suffocation in the Glossary:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#SuffocationHazard
(for those seeing the post below by Enoki, there was a now deleted post in between that Enoki was commenting on. There's nothing in the TOS against what I posted.)

Howdy! I'm new to this server.
Welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay
Thank you!! 😊
Greetings all! I read the FAQ, I'm looking to become a DM with a question to get started about purchasing resources. Is this the place to ask and start?
This is more for folks new to D&D trying to learn the core game rules and mechanics. #dm-discussion is more for DM topics like yours,
Thanks I added the channel to my list!
There’s a lot of channels here for specific topics - make use of #channel-guide to see them and what they are for.
And welcome to the server!
Nope you have to make your sheet again
is there a way to make a sheet in dnd beyond because i dont want to buy the books again
Manually then:
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
I cannot think what command that would be either.
I think only mods can use that one, alas!
It's still in the [public commands list](#frequently-asked-questions message). Betrayal I say!

Alright thanks, I know the basics and I've done a few campaigns dming and a few as a player I just don't know what's changed and how many people use the new phb since I only have the older 5e one
This D&D Beyond article gives an overview of the PHB changes (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1810-updates-in-the-players-handbook-2024). Hard to say how many have opted for the new rules, but I do know folks do continue playing the 2014 version.
Alrighty ill get to reading and note taking, thanks!😸

Welcome. The server has a section dedicated to AL.
For the list of allowed sources you can find it in the AL Players Guide here #al-news-updates message
If you have any more AL question feel free to ask in #adventurers-league
Are you referring to the home tab of the character creator?
No you’re good, for new players and beginner info this is the channel to ask in
you can just have the core rules check marked and you should be fine with that for now.

Oh thanks
I have a question how does de life works in this game
What do you mean de life?
In a fight
By life do you mean Hit Points?
Yes
So when a creature loses all it's hit points?
No, players
The temporary hit, the maximal hit, the hit dice and the death save, I dont understand
For the record, player characters are included in the broad category of "creatures." But in any case:
Oh mb then
where can i join a campain

Maximum Hitpoints: This is just the maximum HP a creature can have. For PCs it's mostly dependent on their class, level, and Constitution modifier. For example, a level 1 Fighter with 16 Con (+3) has a Max HP of 13 (10 from their 1d10 hit die + 3). See here and here and here for more info.
Temporary Hitpoints: Think of this like an "overshield" or "bonus health." Creatures only get Temp HP if a feature specifically grants them it. When they take damage, damage is subtracted from Temp HP before their regular hit points. You also cannot restore Temp HP via healing. A creature can only have 1 source of Temp HP at a time, so if they use another or different feature that grants them Temp HP they either have to keep or discard their old ones. See here for more info.
Hit Dice: These are a resource that's determined by your class (for the die type) and level (for the number of die). Primarily they are used for recovering HP during short rests but are also used for determining your starting HP and how much HP a character gains on level up. See here and here for more info on the latter.
I am new DnD
Son, There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
- When you reach 0 HP, your character goes unconscious, and you begin making death saves on your next turn.
- You roll one death save on each of your turns while in this dying state.
- For a death save, roll a d20. If you roll a 10 or higher, it's a success. 9 or lower, it's a failure.
- If you get 3 success before 3 failures, you "stabilize." (You're still unconscious and at 0 HP, but you don't need to make any more death saves and will wake up in a few hours).
- If you get 3 failures before 3 successes, you die.
- If you take any damage while in this dying state, you don't actually take damage, but you suffer one death save failure.
- A death save of 1 counts as two failures.
- Suffering a critical hit also counts as two failures.
- A 20 on your death save roll causes you to instantly wake up with 1 HP.
Ok so you are à monk level 5. Your max is what ? It depends on how you throw your dices + constitution a for each level ? Or does it court the maximum you can do with the dices ?
Thx
Death Saves. When a PC is reduced to 0 hit points, they fall unconscious. If they then start their turn at 0 HP, they begin making Death Saving Throws. For most characters it is just an unmodified d20 roll (some features can give bonuses). There's a place on the character sheet to mark success and failures for DSTs. There are 4 outcomes of a death saving throw:
- Rolling a 1 is a critical failure and counts for 2 death save failures.
- Rolling a 2-9 is a failure and counts for 1 death save failure
- Rolling a 10-19 is a success and counts for 1 death save success
- Rolling a 20 is a critical success and instantly gives the PC 1 hit point.
If a PC making death saves recovers HP in anyway (e.g. a spell, or rolling a 20 on their death save), they instantly wake up. If they succeed 3 times before they fail 3 times, they remain unconsious but stable and regain 1 HP after 1d4 hours.
If an enemy gets a hit on them they instantly fail 1 DST. If that damage is a critical hit they fail 2. If they fail 3 times before they succeed 3 times they die.
Additionally, there is a special rule where if when you reach 0 HP, if the remaining damage would equal or exceed your max HP you die instantly without getting to make saving throws. For example, a Fighter with at 13/13 HP would die instantly if they took 26 or more damage.
See here for a full rundown of DSTs
So, your HP max depends on a couple things. Your class, your Constitution Modifier, and whether you're rolling or taking the average when you level (which by RAW is your choice as the player)
Monks have a hit die of d8.
At level 1, your HP is the maximum of your hit die + your Con Mod.
Every time you level up, you either roll your hit die or take the average of that roll, rounded up (for monk, that would be 5), add your Con Mod, and add the total to your HP maximum.
Ok thx you
Also can you do more damage with a weapon with strength or dexterity. With common weapons for exemplary
Yes and no. It depends on the character and the weapon being used.
By default, when you swing a melee weapon and hit, the damage is the weapon's damage die plus your Strength modifier. If the weapon has the Finesse property, you can choose to add your Strength mod or your Dexterity mod.
However, Monks are special. Their Martial Arts feature allows them to use their Dexterity mod, even when the weapon doesn't have Finesse.
For example, a monk can attack with a quarterstaff with two hands and deal d8+Dex or Str.
(As a monk, your Dex is probably better than your Str so... Choose the better one, lol)
-# (I assume you're playing monk since you asked about monk HP)

@limber pond for 2024 its under chapter 6 (equipment) under weapons the damage dice is there. For 2014 under In the chapter for rules Rules and on the page for weapons
How do I get into a dnd campain
That looks a little unusual. I would expect something like:
Strength 14 (+2)
Where 14 is your character’s Strength score, and +2 is the modifier.
Okay yes I understand now 🙏🏻🙏🏻
No I don't want to be a dungeon master I just want join an existing one.
Can I please have help
I have no idea what I’m doing and I’m trying to make a character
The channel Kyle linked is also for players looking to join a campaign. DMs make posts in that channel and prospective players apply to their listings
Sure! Where are you stuck?
#looking-for-players is where dns post openings for thier games. Look for what you like and apply, off redit is a good place to, roll-20
You can post in #looking-for-dm look at #find-a-game
But your odds of getting games there are slim
Ik the basics like no OP OCs, making up moves etc. I just need help putting a character together, I've heard of Character sheets but have no idea how any of it works
Hi have you had a look at the free basic rules
I have not, gimme a second. Is there any kind of segment in the server where I could do that
The free Basic Rules are linked in both this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
idk if I should ask in here or character-discussion but ive never played dnd before and was wondering how hard is it to play a necromancer as your first character
Mechanically it's on the more complex side, but that's mainly due to playing a spellcaster which naturally has more decision points (i.e. spell selection) for a newbie. That being said, if you're invested in playing a School of Necromancy Wizard then you'll have fun with it.
On the narrative side I would discuss with your DM and table how Necromancy is viewed by the other PCs and setting at large. Quite a few of the famous Necromancy spells (e.g. Animate Dead) might be viewed as unsavory or evil in-universe.
hmm, so when creating char. does everyone by default get 1 feat at lvl1?
Correct.
ohhh... so our first try DM forgot about this i guess 😄 or gave us some feat without us knowing it.. could he have ben advised to skip lvl1 feat in 2014 rules/
?
2014 rules do not natively have a level 1 Feat, you need to be a Variant Human for that in 2014
Ah. No, if you're using the old rules you only get a feat if you choose the variant option for human.
Ahh, I see :] thank you, I would love may feat still tough ;DDD
Can always get one after leveling up a bit.
yeah, but also No, because our game will go only up to lvl7 and investing in stats for my char is way more beneficial
if i'm building custom lineage and a variant human do i gett benefits from both of these options? or does it work diferently?
and i'v seen some backgrounds gives you afeat so I my add that to on top?
These aren't really #dnd-newcomers questions - may I suggest #character-discussion or #optimization depending on what you're trying to build?
This channel is more about helping new to D&D folks get started with core game rules and mechanics.
ok, for me everything is still new and I don't see an end to it being new any time soon :]
Custom lineage doesn't combine with existing species/races, so just follow the custom lineage rules.

If someone has a crit range of 17 to 20, and they roll a 17 but the thing theyre trying to hit has an ac higher than that, does that mean it misses or will it be guaranteed hit?
Guaranteed hit
Automatically hitting the target is part of the rules for getting a critical hit, so yes, if your crit range expands, so too does the range at which you will automatically hit. That being said, don't forget to add your modifiers to your attack roll. If you rolled a 17 on your d20, you should still be adding something like 5-10 or so to that number. There are very few creatures that wouldn't hit, even if it wasn't a crit
what is the difference between looking for community and the looking for players or dm?
@lofty roost thank yall
A "community game" is a little bit different from a normal game of D&D. A "community game" is one where you play D&D with a community of people rather than 1 specific group every time. There might be a large group of players and several DMs, and you play with each other based on availability. Each individual session will still have 1 DM and 4-6 players, but who that DM is and those other players are will change from week to week.
The "looking for players" and "looking for dm" channels are for people that want to find a traditional group, where you play with the same people every session
what dose PbP mean?
Play-By-Post, a text-only form of D&D
Hi, I'm totally new to d&d so I've never played any game in my life, don't have any characters, just know the basics and I don't really know how this discord works. I've got a friend who's a beginner too and he would like to join. Can someone just explain how can we get started? How can we organise an online game? And all around what should we know about d&d and about this server? Any help is deeply appreciated
P.S.: I know that there's a FAQ section but I would prefer someone to explain it to me and my friend so that we can like ask questions and stuff
PbP = Play By Post.
Loosely, it is text based D&D played by some sort of exchange of messages that does not involve anyone speaking to each other and noone meets in person. Communications are entirely messaging through whatever medium is chosen whether that is a message board, through e-mail, text messages, or whatever .
It tends to play a little differently and tends to be slower paced and requires adjustments specific to the medium.
Greetings....I have never played any dnd but I saw a few videos online and want to try it out
@warm adder Cool I play from time to time
@ember robin
So....what is there I need to know?
Ok then....thank you 🙂

Hello, I have been trying to play adventure league for the first time. Everytime I think I have my character ready someone starts offering a list of changes to my character. I get they are trying to help. But this has happened twice now before play and usually ends up to me leaving before getting to play.
Is this on this server or wherever you're trying to play?
For this server, #al-characters is the best channel for character questions. That's the best way to ensure that you actually get AL legal advice
This is at a store.
are they trying to help u make a "legal" AL character or just how to mkae it better?
I assume better but honestly don't really know. Most of the advice has been don't use standard array. Instead use point buy to get these stats they feel I should have. I assume it is legal as far as AL is concerned but don't know enough.
If it's just about optimization and it's confusing you, my advice would probably be to just tell them that you're happy with your character
Standard array is just one layout you can get from point buy, so it's perfectly legal
exactly politely thank them fo their advice but that u r all set
If you're worried about legality, you can ask them to only check that instead
hey i have a huge interest to dive in dnd but it is always so intimidating to begin. Can someone hold my hands thru process TT or what should i do?

In general, there are too many new players here for people to be able to hold your hand through the whole process. Though if you have specific questions, people will answer when they can
I'd recommend starting with the links above
I'll see about dismissing their advice next time. If I even attempt to try again. Doesn't help that I am a little socially skittish.
If you'd like someone to double check for legality so you know for sure your character is fine before you go, you can ask in #al-characters
Might make it easier to say no thanks in the store
I'll consider it, thanks for the help.
If bombs are part of the setting and the DM allows it, potentially.
But not as a default expectation.
Not to belabour the point, but small bit of advice... if you have people reviewing the character, specify you are only concerned with AL legality, not optimization.
Players who review characters very often try to optimize if you do not tell them otherwise. Many people really feel they are helping and they should respect your desire to play your character the way you want to, especially AL players I find.
Weird thing to me about it has been that I never asked them for any help with my character. Neither of them are the GM who I assume is actually in charge of checking for legality of my character. Just strangers leaning over my shoulder to read my sheet and tell me what i should be doing.
Well definitely tell them to shove off then (though politely
)
Something like "thanks but I'd prefer to figure it out on my own" usually works in my experience
im kind of confused about prepared spells. it says cleric at level 3 (4 level 1 spells slots and 2 level 2 spellslots)can have 3 cantrips, 6 prepared spells and can change any of them during a long rest. Does this mean you know all spells but you have to choose 6 level 1 and 2 spells for the day?
Yep - clerics know all their spells but can only have a limited set prepared.
thanks
Note though, 6 total spells, so you could take 2 1st levels and 4 2nd levels or 6 1st levels and no 2nd levels or any old combination as long as the total is 6. However, you probably don't want to do 0 1st and 6 2nd because you may then have no use for your 1st level slots.
The spell slots are independent. You have no choice there. At your level, you will always have 4 slots for 1st and 2 slots for 2nd.
yeah i thought so. but you could still get value from the level 2 slots even if you had all level 1 spells cuz of the spell upgrades right? even though its probably suboptimal
Correct.
It's also not necessarily suboptimal. First level spells can actually be really useful and there can be a fair argument to take a lot of them.
i was also wondering about martial characters. many people say they kind of suck but then i saw a dnd shorts video with a crazy barbarian build. so like... whos right?
So, that's more of an #optimization question or one for #character-discussion , but suffice it to say, neither "sucks" (especially in 2024).

proficiencies, i see characters with +17; +10; +15 etc. in multiple areas, how do they get it? how is proficiencies scaled, increased?
as of now i only understand leveling up and expertise fod double the base proficiency
Proficiency and expertise are the big ones. Apart from that, all skills have an associated ability score that is added.
For example, a level 17 character with expertise in Persuasion and Charisma score of 20 is called on by the DM to make a Charisma (Persuasion) check.
The total bonus on that would be: +12 (from expertise alone) + 5 (Charisma), which results in a total bonus of +17 on that roll.
Proficiency (and thus expertise) bonus depends on level, as you can see on this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CharacterAdvancement
ok but what about +17 on persuasion alone in char sheet? how do we exactly get that, for me it looks like +12 is the common maximum, except maybe you get some item?
Without seeing the character sheet, hard to tell.
It particularly depends on class, level and associated ability score.
But in general, yes, bonuses that high are unusual.
I'm too scared to join my first ever game
Why is that? Do you like to have fun? Do you have an imagination?😊
A DND beyond character sheet will include both proficiency and the main attribute.
Without muddying the water too much at level 17!you have a +6 to persuasion if proficient, double it to +12 if you have expertise, and then +5 for having 20 charisma which is the default attribute used with persuasion checks.
The way proficiency or expertise is shown on a beyond character sheet is the circles next to each skill being filled on or not.
If you're not proficient and have 8 charisma, your persuasion could be -1 even if you're level 20.
Hi Im new to DnD (I read a lot of rules and made my character sheet, I don’t know if I did it right, but I never joined a game). I am looking for a game for beginners, can anyone help me?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started. Do read the descriptions, but most games are fine with taking on new players.
It can be scary those first few sessions, but with a good group of people to play with you’ll have fun guaranteed!!
Hi! Im new to the game and I am trying to find a game for beginners or a game accepting beginners, would be grateful for your help!

Where am i
I mean, Planet Earth 🌍 , one would think.
Did you have a D&D question you were wondering about?
In my basement
I believe you've been directed to #find-a-game before. That's the proper channel to group find on this server
I have a few questions. So im trying to fix a campaign with my friends and Im most likely gonna be the DM and if i am i need a map so anyone know a good place to make maps online?
i play as a player in another campaign btw
Not necessarily, but most DMs prefer to use maps. What adventure do you want to run? The starter sets or essentials kit are best for new DMs.
We dont really know yet
Sorry, I read this as "do I need a map". My husband likes inkarnate!
i know i dont need one but its just nice to have one yk
Did you have any other questions?
are there things i should get as a first dm
Not really. There are definitely some great resources, like Return to the Lazy Dungeonmaster. A list of names in case you need to make an NPC on the fly. But so long as you're running one of those starter adventures, everything else you need will be included.
i'd also like to mention, if you're not super picky about the map being 1:1 accurate to what you see in your head, you can always google for maps! lots of people make and share them for free
i just need a map builder thats simple and you know whats there like for example a town and so i can say where we are
Yeah, my husband liked Inkarnate.
alright
do you need a map as in a world map? or a map as in a battlemap? inkarnate is probably the simplest free solution regardless
World map but battlemap could be good
I google for my battle maps but inkarnate for world and city maps
ah ok, my advice mostly applies to battlemaps lol, i can imagine you would want to make your own world map, inkarnate is def what youre looking for
ok
hey guys
Hey wombat
hey is owlbear rodeo strictly for pc or for mobile too
?
I've heard it works for mobile.
It can be used on mobile devices for various definitions of “works”
Mobile is always going to be performance and display constrained
Hola
can someone explain the basics to me? my friend wanted me to play with a few others and i have a session coming up, but i have absolutely no clue what in doing

there a lot of resources online for learning how to play, but most importantly, talk to your dm about what you may need for the game, communication is the most important step towards playing dnd :D
Im completely new
im interested but cant find any games thats about happen
and i feel like learning as i play might be better but i cant really find anyone and I dont want to be a pain
@wicked sable alright, thank you!
summer vacation became torture after 2 week
you can look for games inside #find-a-game most dms will be fine with a new player in their game as long as you communicate that before the game starts :D
To add to what Bread is saying is that most of the servers do not allow players who are under 18 to play in their servers but there are some servers that are especially for 18 and under and there are some servers that allow players who are 13+ to play
Is there a tier list anywhere for the best classes? I just want a general idea for a good simple class I can play to get started on my DnD journey.
The PHB actually has a very good table for class complexity. I wouldn't worry about a tier list. It's more fun if you pick an archetype that you like.
Fighter and barbarian are the easiest classes to start with
Okay, thanks to both of you guys!
And monk
I don’t like playing spellcasters
But if you want to play a spellcaster the simplest one would be cleric
pick what sounds and looks the best to you, dnd shouldnt be about the most effective build possible, and more about the people you spend time with, its a social tabletop game for a reason :D
I don't really understand about the character making part
and i want to ask if any one free and willing to help me out
since im not sure on what i need to do
like is any dm willing to host a game where most player are like new and just help them out
First get a DnD Beyond account
if you need help with character creation, there are plenty of free tools online. Dnd Beyond is a very easy tool to make characters for complete beginners, and i recommend that the most :D
yes that is what im confused about is that the character builder for D&D beyond scares me like it gives me a big list to fill and i dont know what it wants
remind me how much hp is monster have when they are critical
Yes DnD Beyond is the easiest way to create a character
i usually say critical is when they are below 10% hp
I can help with your character if you'd like to DM me. I can walk you through it step by step.
@outer sable that’s what is called metagaming and it’s not allowed
You just can’t ask a DM how many HP does a monster have
During game play
Brand new players can do a lot of metagaming to start off with and it’s really not mentioned that much in here
A creature is Bloodied while it has half its Hit Points or fewer remaining.
Not entirely true. Every DM has different limitations of what metagaming is allowed (and also different definitions of what metagaming even is).
I don’t allow it
What you can and can't do is a discussion to be had with your table (including but not exclusively including your DM).
What you allow might differ from what their DM allows.
You don’t just go asking a DM how many HP a monster has while in combat
again every DM is different
To me that’s a terrible DM
to me, thats a subjective opinion
Ok well thats your opinion which you are entitled to for sure! Not only do I not care, but I often describe all but exact numbers where the enemies are at.
That’s good because that’s not metagaming
literally no difference. If I tell them it is bloodied they know 1/2 ish. if i say barely hanging on, its nearing death. if i say one more good hit, its going to die with a hit. if i say by A string they know 1-2 hp. all in all, they know enough just like saying it has 10 hp left
Yes I do the exact same thing as you do
having been in legit sword fights (blunted weapons), you can read where your opponent is at in their "health"
so whats the difference between saying "they are just barely hanging on" and saying "they are at 1 hp"
uh... dnd seems cool but i'm really lost (I have a set of dice though)
You are metagaming when you say that the monster is at 1 hit point
are you completely new?
then you are metagaming when you BARELY hanging on
No
ive tried to get in before, but pretty much yes

do you plan on being a dungeon master for a group?
for my friends maybe, otherwise no
It can be intimidating! But it's very fun and rewarding.
i LOVE DMin and playin
well, if your looking for how to play dnd, theres plenty of online resources available to you, and if your looking to hop into a game as a player you can go to #find-a-game follow the steps and find a game to your liking :D
it just is so much fun watching your friends move through your world
same for me!
I always loved going through videogame walkthroughs and pretending they were ttrpg adventures before I knew ttrpgs were a thing lol
LOVE that Tafe!
I’m DMing tonight
Lost Mines of Phandelver
I’m starting a new group of players
All are brand new players
thats cool
Yes it is
Why do you need a passive wisdom score?
I was just filling out the character sheet
Good luck!
DnD Beyond automatically does that
Do you mean Passive Perception? Because passive wisdom isn’t really a thing.
I don’t use dnd beyond because I use things from multiple books and I’m not paying hundreds of dollars on the books
Yeah, it had perception in parenthesis but said passive wisdom
The players handbook should have that
It’s 10+your Perception modifier. Idk why it’s worded like that.
Nope. They just do what they do
I'm looking to DM a session does anyone know of any good LFG? I tried the D&Dlfg and the LFG reddits but haven't gotten any players
you tried it here?
where is the LFG for the server?
Also, my guide has a bunch of options to check out: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?usp=sharing
ah yes thank you
I just joined this server cuz I'm looking to become a player in a campaign
I still consider myself to be an amateur, but my DMs are open if there's a campaign out there

Hey gurren
Yeah?
U said hey u said hey lol
Let's keep things on D&D topics please - we've had enough rounds of introductions! 😅
I was saying that to the person that said hey lol
So do I basically do what's there and when I have questions I ask here?
Yuppers
Okay just a sec
I have a question, since my friends were talking about "winning dnd" I don't get what the mean can anyone help
By telling me what they mean
Generally speak, you can't "win" D&D
Okay?
It's supposed to be a collaborate game where the party works together to complete their goals
It’s kinda w a running joke because you don’t really ever win
Oh okay
So I mostly hear that phrase used as a joke or sometimes mocking people who try to break the game/their DM instead of playing properly. If a player is described as wanting to win D&D, that's not usually a good thing
So does the DM end it whenever they want or depending on the story they created?
Hey! Me and my friend are looking for a group that would be willing to play with us online. We are both fairly new and don't have much experience but we enjoy playing and learning how everything works. If anyone is interested please feel free to send me a message
I haven't actually played yet but I want to understand the combat system before I start playing cause it's been confusing me.

I'm still not totally aware with all of the combat because there is quite a lot
Howdy!
Ah okay sorry I hadn't seen that I've just gotten here. Guess I wasn't looking hard enough
I just joined. I've played DnD like 4 times. It's a fun game but all my friends that play aren't available. I was hoping joining this could educate me on rules/how things work/help find someone to play with
Is there something like a sheet to make my character or will it have the be manually
PDF character sheet: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
You can also use DnDBeyond's digital character sheet tools (or mobile app) to create and manage character sheets.
Also different Virtual Tabletop tools also provide character sheet tools for their platforms/services.
Please note that unless you own the books, you'll be limited to materials available in the D&D free rules/System Reference Document (SRD).
Damn that's a lot of complicated stuff
Like anything new, it looks like a lot (and it can be) but just take it step by step. Chapter 2 of the free rules actually goes over the process of creating a character.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Character needs a class, species, background. Check each section in the Free Rules for those. Go with what sounds fun.
Can I only just do those or do I have to fill every single part
You start with those. They'll each give you some choices to make. Later you'll add on ability scores, figure hit points and equipment.
does, a beholder needs to see its target to hit them with rays?
Like what if the character using greater invis. can they still hitted by it?
Those are the big choices, but you need to determine ability scores and assign your skills and stuff in order to know what bonus to add to your skill checks. And if you pick a spellcaster, you also have to deal with spells.
"The beholder randomly shoots one of the following magical rays at a target it can see within 120 feet of itself"
RAW, no
i see, thanks
Yes, it does need to see the target. However, important things to remember:
- they can project an antimagic cone from their main eye
- beholders frequently have slaves, thralls and followers to assist them
- they're really good at Perception checks
Yeah, if the beholder even thinks there's a target it can't see, it's gonna start sweeping the area with that Antimagic vision cone. So that greater invis isn't going to help for very long
The Antimagic cone works against its own rays tho, no?
It does.
Do I have to make a character sheet before I start looking for a group or can I make one after I meet the party and figure out what campaign it is?
could anyone possible explain to me how xp workes when lvling up your character eg what stats get lvled and what order to do it in
It depends on the game. Not every character option is appropriate for every game, for various reasons. So it's pretty common to make a character after you've entered a group. Groups often make their characters together, as a part of a Sesson 0.
You can make a character ahead of time, but just understand that some of that character might need to be changed, depending on how your DM is running things.
Thank you, now I just have to understand how this thing works lol
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Take a look at the table for your class. When you level up, you gain the things that your class table says you gain at that level.
The long and short of it is your stats (your ability scores, actual numbers, etc.) don't scale all that much in D&D. At least not compared to some other RPGs out there. Your ability scores only change at the certain levels that have Ability Score Improvement (for most classes, that's levels 4, 8, 12, 16), unless you take a feat instead.

i dont have a group yet or a dm and sometimes dont the dm have rules regarding ur character? should i fr make my character first or get in a group first
it is always fun and good practice to make a character. then when u find a gropu either the DM is cool with it, cool with minor changes, or at least u understand how to do it
As for if you need to create a character first: Well, it's useful and fun to create a practice character before you join a game. There's no guarantee whether your DM will accept that character, so we call it a practice character just in case.
oh okay coolll ill do that
I’m new

i get my proficiency in stealth by adding up dex+prof bonus
when i use Hide action
do I add dex again to the whole stelth bonus?
sounds illogical but i need to make sure
No you don’t add it again
and then how to calculate tools proficiencies?
just use flat proficiency bonus on them?
So I am a realtivly new dm and am making a weapon with the following ability
Once per short rest, you may channel divine power through the hammer to deal an extra 1d6 radiant damage. A creature hit must succeed on a con saving throw or be blinded.
my question is what determines the dc for the saving throw? I know spells have spell save dc but what if the player is not a spellcaster?
i actually hhave no clue how dnd works i only know abt race and class
You can just set a flat DC like 15 or something.
ok thank you
does anyone have advice for how to find a group and start developing a character with a dm?
ive started a character but im dont know the rules super well
-# Hi, everyone! A couple of friends of mine realized we had way too much freetime, so I suggested we play D&D, to which they all agreed they wanted to, only problem being that no one knows anything beyond surface level stuff.
-# I bit the bullet and agreed to DM, but I don't know where to start? Does anyone have any tips or pointers they'd be willing to share? Anything, everything helps! ^^ Thanks for reading!
Used smaller text so I didn't steamroll post over the lad above me!! Any and all help appreciated!!
Send me a DM. I can answer any questions you might have.
Thank you!! Sending one over right now
Yes. You add proficiency bonus to whatever you roll when using the tool.
how play
I suggest asking #homebrew for help developing a custom weapon. That being said the DC is up to you, though typically a Save DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + an ability modifier.
The exact stat is also up to you. For convenience I suggest making it their class's primary ability (e.g. Strength for Barbarian).
hiya :)
Why can't I send messages in the #looking-for channels

what
Right here! #dnd-newcomers message
Hi, I'm new here and I don't quite understand where I can find people who would like to start a group. I'm new to D&D.
I am here is it msg dnd?
Btw I have a good for next dnd session like you can add a candy or a secret drug called dnd nutcase and if you eat it , it will just change your real world in RPGs and dnd type word people now have dialog options and you can play with your friends with real people who live around you as an NPC so you know the game is more fun and chaotic in real world
anyone know some better animate undead rules me players play a necromancer but only using skeletons and zombies is boring and he does not yet have create undead
Hi hi! Aaa i've been interested in dnd for so long, and been wanting to play but i never managed to truly learn or join a group!
Does anyone have some good tips on learning for dnd? I usually struggle with learning games sadly.
I'm better at learning while playing :/
I watched hella Avantris and paid attention to the serious moments. Rolls, role play, dm interaction
When I first got super interested
Ohhh are they on youtube or twitch? Or tiktok?
That'd be more #homebrew topic for any additional / changes to rules, or #dm-discussion if you're looking for advice or idea within the rules
oh my bad sorry
There's plenty of resources online if you want to learn that way, if not you can try to find a group by going to #find-a-game and following the steps to gain access to the looking for players channel
i don’t know much about dnd but my coworker talks about it all the time and now i feel i will quickly become addicted lol
Ah, look! Another one!
another one! i’ve always thought dnd sounded so interesting! my highschool even had a dnd club but i never joined D:
We in the same boat, I know like, absolutely nothing except dice go brrrr
Even worse is my friend is hosting a campaign for new players like us, and he wants me to DM like… I don’t know how to write for Curse of Strahd 💔💔💔
Wait, your friend is hosting it... but wants you to DM? And not only that one of the more difficult modules at that
literally the extent of my knowledge is big dice go brrr😭 and being the dm when you’re new sounds so stressful hahah
Mhm, he got a whole bunch of new people in effort to teach us about the game… but I feel like I should have more knowledge from the get-go. I have the book, and I have the DM guide for the book, but I have absolutely 0 clue what I’m doing. Though to be fair I did offer to DM, after he said he couldn’t find one
it would be really fun to find a group where no one knows what’s up and everyone’s learning together lol
Like… one of my friends wants me to write her fursona into the lore, another wants me to be a all-knowing PLAYER that’s basically the DM and a player at the same time (which I denied because screw trying to learn how to PLAY and DM during the same campaign)
That’s basically what this is I’m ngl
i mean it sounds like you’re up for the challenge so im sure you’ll do great!
I’m not sure about going THIS far… I’d PROBABLY be fine if I simply went with what the book said and we all had basic characters and stuff, but that’s boring and I DO NOT want to be a boring DM
It's definitely not impossible to start off as a DM, and its a lot less intimidating role than it first might seem
Though definitely smarter to start simple. I recently got to the end of Curse of Strahd, and definitely would not recommend it to a new group for several reasons
It’s worse when I don’t even know the simple process of the… idk, “pregame” setup(?) the DM has to do.
Well what's in the book tends to be there for a reason, and it's not "boring" to follow iit, especially for a start
In fact going a complete opposite direction just to "not be boring" can being its own actual problems
I meant adding my own twists and such lol. For example, like I said, my friend wanted me to write her fursona into the campaign. But her fursona is the daughter of a god, so I haven’t a clue in the slightest how I’m gonna manage
yeah and if everyone in the group is new im sure they’ll be understanding. i’d imagine most new players, dm or not, are worried about doing well
Yep, many people are just happy to get to play!
Well this would get more into a #dm-discussion topic on how to handle things like that, but remember that you can (and when needed, should) say no to players
If a player wants stuff that just doesnt work in your adventure, you can talk to them to chabge stuff a little to fit, or just deny stuff like being related to gods, or other stuff that becomes difficult to impossible to work into a story
And thats not boring, that's considerate for other players that aren't making god characters
Hi yall :))
mornin
hru? 🙂
I am good. Are you looking for anything specific this mornin
not really, lol!
I found my first campaign by posting on a local Facebook community in my area. Saying I was a noob looking to learn and shared a place and time for interested people to meet. We ended up with 10 players! A bunch of noobs and super experienced DMs. And 50% female/male ratio. It was an epic way to get introduced to the game. That homebrew campaign lasted over a year.
Best wishes on your journey to find a game. I’m in my second campaign. It’s going on 1.5 years. We’re doing Strahd.
That is AMAZING!!!! What a great success story!!!
My friend from another game introduced me to Vox Machina. I fell head over heels for the series and wanted to know how the storyline was developed. Which led me to D&D. I wanted to learn to become a better storyteller. Plus, I love fantasy and strategy.
That friend helped me along the way on my D&D journey. Now he is in the same campaign as me. Full circle. D&D for life 🫶.
wow thats so cool !! i’d love to find a group where we could just learn together that sounds like so much fun !
There are a lot of servers to choose from but some of them aren’t that good and some are really good
is Wall of Ice spell giving out full cover?
If you are fully behind it, yes. Even an invisible wall of force that you can see through provides full cover.
Cover is largely a matter of whether something blocks a clear path, which a wall of ice would.
hey
so if i use repeating shot or gunner feat
on a loading gun
does that make me still be able to shoot with action/reaction/bonus action? or just action
if with action/reaction/bonus action yes
and with action does that make me shoot multiple time if i have extra attack, if yes then does the other reaction and bonus action does so too?
You can definitely shoot with action/reaction/bonus (if otherwise eligible for those actions to shoot) as this does not kill that.
Re: Extra Attack. Extra Attack only affects the action. You don't get to shoot extra times in Bonus or Reaction due to it.
I believe the conclusion we've come to in the past is that the intention may have been that Artificer's's Repeating Shot is meant to bypass the Loading property. However, a number of people have indicated that as the Loading property is not called out, it may RAW not negate the requirements of the Loading property. In essence, that just referring to the free hand, blah, blah, may not be sufficient. For somethiung like this, you would need to ask your DM. (The rest of the points are solid in RAW.)
I am not familiar with Gunner so I'm skipping on that one but if it has much the same wording, the conclusions would likely be the same.
Gunner feat specifically mentions Loading, so it would work
But extra attack doesn't affect your bonus action or reaction, it only affects the Attack action
Ah, thanks. Yeah, that's why I bowed out on Gunner. 🙂 Not reading the rules is the #1 way to screw up a Rules reading. 🙂
so, the loading shot thing and ignoring it
is vague? huh
It's not that Repeating Shot is vague exactly. It's that the ability saying the item makes its own ammunition doesn't actually specify that it can ignore the Loading property because of that.
So while you definitely wouldn't need to supply ammunition, any further mechanical effects are extrapolation and thus
There are things such as Gunner that mention the Loading property by name, but Repeating Shot doesn't

Sweet, thank you, also somehow the server roles selector thing disappeared on me how can i get the player role?

Hi everyone- I’m excited to be here!
I’m Chris, from the UK. New to DND, strongly in the DM camp but have never played
I’ve got the three core books, the 2024 versions, and the art, unbelievable depth and breadth and sheer possibilities are making me geek out in the best ways
Are there conversations on this server about planning real life, face to face sessions?
Where would you point a Level 1 DM (if that’s a thing) like me?
Are there many established dragonrider settings out there?
#dm-discussion isn’t just about online DMing but for all DMing!
That'll be covered in #find-a-game , mate.
If you were to ask how to become a blacksmith, I would tell you to make knives! Get into a game, talk to people you know would like to play or that you would like to play with!
and always remember to have fun playing
I'll venture a guess at no, as dragons in D&D are people rather than beasts. #dnd-lore might know more?
There is a thing for that

Hello, I’m a new player, I was wondering how we make characters? Long time ago I used a character sheet to do it and how I can join a game is there a certain channel? Godbless You all😁🙏
The above has links and #looking-for-players is where dm advertise thier games
The thing the person above put is good for online games and I would recommend going to a game shop for in person
I would also recommend dnd beyond for sheets because it takes you through the process

ok ive been thinking about this and ive been developing a character. i wanna understand what exacrly a dhampire is because i mean it sounds like its supposed to be a half vampire but also it seems like just someone between life and death who has some sort of hunger
You kinda answered your own question haha
Dhampire is Basicly half vampire, A guy in limbo that has a hunger but can or tried to fight agaisnt it. Its humanity vs monsterarity.
hi there I'm new to D&D and this discord could you tell me what to do?
I'm having my first campaign today :)
It's with a couple of friends that have also never played D&D before
would you mind if i joined?
Guys I wanna get into dnd but I don't know how.. I have quite a few friends who play but they don't seem to want another in the party so how do I find a group?
if you find the answer to that please tell me
locally, check out game stores or maybe social media groups about your area.
or try to find a group online, like on /lfg on reddit or roll20. or here. #find-a-game
Alright I'll look into an online party. Thank you <3

hey twenty one pilots !❤️
Hello there - is there a channel here where I could post games that I offer?
There is
There are platforms like "Startplaying" where you can find lots of games that you can trust. I offer my games there as well.
Thank you. Do you know the name of that channel? I first thoughts's it's the "advertising" channel - but that seems to be dedicated to products. 🙂
Great. Thank you. 🙂
#looking-for-players is the right channel to advertise a game you are running
if you wanna post there follow #find-a-game
Thank you. Will read the instructions. Right now I am not yet allowed to post there.
yeah there is a cooldown period for new people joining the server, to avoid spammers and scammers
ik this may be asked alot, but does anyone have any tips for finding a good group?
ik theres the lfg channels, but how would i know if a groupd right

hi guys!!! so, how do you make a character and a character sheet?? its kinda confusing for me

Hey everyone! 👋
I'm completely new to D&D — I have no experience at all and don’t really know how the game works yet, but I’m really excited to learn and give it a try!
I was wondering where I should start or if there are any beginner-friendly groups I could join? I’d love to find a group that’s open to helping a new player get into the game. Thanks in advance!

Dnd beyond might make it easyer it basically tells u what the options are as u make it
What class are you thinking of going for
I'm thinking of going druid
Druid is a very difficult class to play because u can prepare spells from the entire spell list and have to keep track of all of the different wildshapes you have
Im not saying u shouldn't go for it I'm just saying it might take abit of work
That's alright I like to view DND as a trial and error thing. I appreciate the heads up though
Im new to Dnd can anyone help me on where to start i really wanna play😭
Im rlly lost....

Ok thank you so much!
hi all, is there a place where i can put my custom monster stat blocks?
I have a question what does faith mean?
What your character has faith in what god/religion
ok thank you
ok ill try there
In most D&D worlds, there are many gods that are involved in a larger or lesser extent. So most of the time you're dealing with something reminiscent of the greek pantheon. Even characters that don't get powers from the gods may still pray to a particular deity.
I have a question
What does all the different stats mean
some are obvious while others arent
Ability scores*
Here's a short summary:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#AbilityDescriptions
tysm
I wanna play but like, I'm scared to annoy others player by asking questions causes I'm new,
dw same 😭
I've been looking a bit of time to learn about th game a little bit but there's just something too unclear bruh
I also have a question how do you know what modifiers to give ur character
I though Valorant is more newbie unfriendly, but who knows, its turn out to be a Board game
Just joined the discord and saw your message and i coulnd't agree more. Terrified of being annoying or so due to questions on how to do what or what does that do etc.
I think it's in dndbeyond.com
im on dnd beyond, but idk what to give modifiers or what to do with them
Idk but I remember it's strength, endurance blah blah I forgot
Is it what U mean?
The modifiers come from your ability scores. Every full two points higher than 10 gives you +1. The part you need to fill out is only the ability scores themselves - I recommend using the standard array method.
ok thank you

What, I though it's the stat thingy where if U roll and in the {...} Stat +1, and I roll 10 its will +1?
Sorry if it's confusing
Is there a specific role i need to get to try to find groups that are newbie friendly so i can play and learn?
The Dyno post just above has a bunch of guides and videos to help you get started. If you've got particular questions go ahead and ask. Most groups will be fine with newcomers but do read the adverts carefully before applying.
Cause ability scores is not mentioned in demo, I think the only mention the intelligence, agility, stat thing
Thank you.
Deva posted a guide earlier: #dnd-newcomers message
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
^ How to generate ability scores. If you don't have a DM or group yet, I'd suggest using Standard Array.
ty
Your ability modifiers are based off your Ability Score for that ability - as an example if your character has a strength ability score of 14 your strength modifier is +2. Your modifiers change based on every two points in an ability. So an ability score of 12 would give you a +1, while an ability score of 14 would get you a modifier of +2.
Modifiers can be negative
So an ability score of 8 would be a -1 modifer in that ability.
hello im new to the game i hope to get some help to understand it
Same here! Just bought 2 sets of dice out of sheer excitement but have no clue!!!

I love your enthusiasm !!!
Watched a video on YouTube to try get some basics and need some help getting a character set up as feel a bit overwhelmed with everything around the character side of things
did u use D&D Beyond? GREAT way to walk through step by step to build a character
I just created an account and saw they had prebuilds but was a little taken back by the level of detail!
The prebuilds are ok but start from scratch and walk through each step at yer own pace reading everything
Attempting to find someone or a couple of people I can bounce off of with the simple bits as there is a lot to it
I appreciate the advise massively, ill take all the help I can get 😄
The essential elements of a character are their class, species and background. Pick one of each from the lists in the Free Rules.
Thank you!
hey guys do most people charge money for games? or is that more rare than just a group of friendly peeps
Most folks play D&D with their friends for free
But paid games can be a way to get a D&D game in.
Some folks have challenging schedules or just want a level of commitment in the game that a paid game can help address.
ahh okay cool, thanks!
also what is the main difference between 5e and 5.5e (should i just google this), and what is considered a "game" of dnd
like do people just play a game in a day? or are full campaigns more common
5e refers to the 2014 version while 5.5e is usually considered to be the 2024 version because it's basically a remaster
And a game of dnd is when a dungeon master and group of players get together (either in real life or online) and they start playing d&d
Some people prefer oneshots which is a one and done 2 to 3 hour session, some people prefer full fledged campaigns
Officially D&D 5e is both the 2014 and 2024 materials but the community may refer to them in different ways. Mechanically there is very little difference between 2014 and 2024 5e materials - 2024 is "forward compatible" meaning you can bring 2014 materials and use them with 2024 materials.
ahhh okay cool, and how does levelling typically work in one shots?
Typiclaly a one-shot does not involve leveling at all. You're usually all playing characters at a set level and perhaps a selection of resources.
A one-shot is really just a "one problem, go solve it" kind of D&D game and typically doesn't extend beyond that one game session (thus why it's called a one-shot).
so then for example if i were a fighter in a one shot, would i start off with all my feats like curved shot, etc?
Potentially - the DM would establish what the character expectations and boundaries are for the game.
one shot can be set at any level in the game. its up to the DM
so in one game, you might be playing a level 3 character, and in another one, you could be playing a level 14 one etc
though one shots for new players tend to be set around level 1-4 mostly
where can i matchmake for a oneshot? i think im being stupid lol

can someone check my spells on my character for me im confused
okay cool
Do you have a character sheet to share, or your class?
yes i have the pdf
And what did you want to know?
Hello, I'm new here and to D&D.. I've played the video game D&D Heroes on Xbox wayyy back in the day, but that's all I know.
I would recommend looking at the rules on dnd beyond
There is alot of them but after you got the basic words and terms it should be pretty easy
K
Me: joining this server to start my DnD life and getting Bg3 in order to sort of understand more o the concept of DnD
Also me: disappearing for months because Bg3 is more fun than I thought it was and understanding why it got Game of the Year
K
could someone tell me roughly what a paladin might do? maybe this is ignorant, but i feel like its a lot to read and was wondering if someone could summarise? im guessing its somewhat of a tank but dont know much more
They tend to be pretty hardy, between their armour proficiencies, saves and features. They often lean towards melee, taking the roles of strikers with their smites and defenders with their aforementioned toughness. They can be a bit like clerics, but generally more martial themed. Where they use spells it's often directly for battle.
The Elenium series follows a group of paladins on a quest (plus squire, wizard, thief and assorted hangers-on). They're holy knights, but all different. Also not D&D, but I like the example.
im joining a 4 (maybe 5) man party but one is already a cleric, should i maybe go something else? i was also considering a barbarian
Look at the features, consider what you want to get out of the rules they give you. Everything else is flavour.
wheres the best place to figure out what class i want to play/find that info? would the wiki be best?
i have the players handbook too
Free Rules have some short descriptions, the PHB has more detail and subclasses to pick from. There are also plenty of guides about, like RPG bot.
The players handbook has a section that tells you what each class likes
Under chapter 2: creating a character>create your character
Like, as long as you're not straight up copying another player's character concept, just find something that you think you can vibe with and see what you can build.
Hiya! I just started D&D and have just made my first character sheet! Is anyone okay with my dming them the pdf and they look over it to tell me if it's all good? that would be amazing :)
I'll be down to take a look 💪
Thank you! I'll DM it to you :)
U can dm it to me if u want. 35+ years experience
Hey I'm a newer player I've played a few campaigns at least partially and I'm looking for a group to play with

maybe an obvious question but can someone tell me the rough differences between Sorcerer, Wizard and Warlock?
I'll go over the brief gameplay differences
Wizard uses intelligence and has the biggest spell list with very few class features
Warlocks use charisma and have a smaller spell list and even less spell slots (only like 2) but get a couple spells exclusive to them, they have more features than a wizard and all their spells are casted at their max possible level, they also get all their spell slots back on a short rest
Sorcerer is kind of the in-between of wizard and warlock (in my opinion) in the way that they mix spell list and spell slots with class features. They use charisma and their main gimmick is meta magic which allows them to alter spells, such as being able to target 2 people with spells
Basically, wizard if you want the most spells. Warlock if you want the most class features. Sorcerer if you want a little bit of in-between whilst altering spells
Sorcerer is my personal favorite but that's just my own taste :)
i THINK i know what u mean with class features, but what features can i expect with warlock?
Class features are like passives and abilities basically. And warlocks are HIGHLY customizable because they have eldritch invocations. You'd probably be better off taking a look for yourself because there's alot of options 😅
haha okay cool thanks
am i also right in saying that warlocks utilise weapons more than the other 2?
as warlocks have less spell slots?
Not unless you take the pact of the blade feature which gives you proficiency in any weapon you attune to
Warlocks rely on eldritch blast which is considered by alot of people to be the best cantrip (combat wise)
Warlocks bread and butter is hex and eldritch blast mainly
which pact do i take for eldritch blast? or do all pacts get eldrich blast
ive heard people also saying that for BG3
Eldritch blast is a cantrip so you can get that regardless
It can be for newer players yeah 😅
One of the tricks is to try not to learn everything at once. Focus on just finding out what you need to create your character instead of every character.
D&D is expansive enough that it is best learned gradually.
That's very very true
i was more than fine creating a ranger, fighter etc, i think the problem for me personally might be spellcasting classes lol
Spellcasting classes are definitely a bit harder to learn
That does ring true. The game already throws a lot of features at you at character creation, and spellcasters get a whole bag full of features to pick, essentially.
Especially sorcerer and warlock since they're more complicated than a wizard
damn im going into the deep end then lol
Nah. A spell that hurts, a spell that helps, after that pick what you like.
idek what im reading though 😭
are some spells locked behind DNDB such as toll the dead and armor of agathys?
Some spells are not part of the free rules, ands require you to own the source book to access them, yes
I am very new to dnd, having only played a very simplified version with friends (it very quickly went to summoning blue eyes with dragon) and had the idea for a character but didn't know how to make it work correctly, the character is a druid who has a pet squirrel who is the main focus, being a combination of using the squirrel and the druid to attack, can someone help, I might not understand stuff but idc, I learn better this way
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Oh thanks
finally got a warlock made, could someone check that im not being a dumb***
Guys its one of my first campaigns on DnD.. whats a cancer mage?
accidentally made it lvl 1 but im gonna put it to lvl 3 in a sec
A problem player
?
If you made it on D&DBeyond then you can drop the share link here or in #character-discussion . Otherwise if you made it another way like on PDF you can upload it to a trusted file sharing site like Google drive and send the share link to that
ill drop it here, ive really confused myself. a server is telling me to use 35 point buy and idk how to work it lmao.
“Cancer Mage” is not an official game term in 5e. It’s likely some group-specific term or homebrew, or from an older edition. In any case I would ask the people that are using the term what it means
So new to DnD andlooking to learn and play with a group
It was an official game term, back in the day.
Same
I am confused about the component how do I know which to add to my pouch
Do you give people cancer?
Component pouch, holds everything you need to cast unless it has a GP or is consumed.
but don't you need a list of the items like for example
Like my spells are
Lodestones (2 small ones)
Bit of fleece
Cured leather piece
Vial with 10 pinches of fine sand
Nope, it had a little telepathic companion that gave people diseases IIRC.
That actually sounds cool
Hello everyone my name is void
Hi I'm Birb
just started watch Legends of Avantris and it really got me wanting to try out DnD and I would love to vibe out and laugh with people playing the game 😄
It was like 3e or 3.5.
I've been watching people like them for a while, I think I have a general understanding but I would like to learn and play myself
Ah okay
So do I add that to my pouch, or what? It's kinda weird to add a component pouch to my character without actually adding the items
Nope, the component pouch has everything. You can use the components if you want to add some flavour but otherwise it has everything at all times.
Then how do you know if you have it or need to spend the gold
my friends told me about that and i want to watch it but yesterday i was dm for a game for the first time
Its a game, it does not have that level of granularity, only if they have a gp or are consumed.
How'd it go?
then why list it
Flavour.
they said i was good for my first time ever playing especially as dm
but why does some stuff have it but other don't
Nice
but one of the players was always dm so he guided me and it was fun
Because some spells do not have a material component.
But that mean you would need the component to use the spell if it does
Only if they have a material component, you need either a component pouch, focus or wand.
it was a premade story with pre made characters
yes and you need to have the item in the pouch
Hii , I was recommended this server because I wanna find a online DND group , can anyone help me find one please?
I'm still relatively new to DND!
Doesn't take away from the fact that you did good
Yeah I came here too because of that, except I searched it on Google because I chose to find one myself
you could try playing baldur’s gate for a introduction to D&D it helped me when i was playing yesterday
I would but I'm broke 😭😭
having like a base of how it works and working off of that
If that is how you want to play it, but just having the pouch satisfies the material component. Its only if they have a gp or are consumed that you have to specifically track them
fair
So did ya find any?
Not yet, I joined like 5 minutes ago
I watched a YouTuber, and they said I can revive as I have 3 diamonds so I can do it 3 times
Casting some spells requires particular objects, specified in parentheses in the component entry. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell.
If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell.
Then why does dnd beyond have it as a Storage????
No idea, I dont use DDB.
Can you store those components you need to track by any chance, such as the diamonds you just mentioned.
I went on google and typed is there good discord servers to find dnd group... which got me here
but the pouch mean you don't need the diamonds then
Because the diamonds for revivify are the kind of thing you need to keep track of.
it replace it
Nope.
that what you just said
Nope
A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell.
in place as it replace it
You need to keep reading.
but how do you know if You have the specific component if you don't list it like mine
Like my spells are
Lodestones (2 small ones)
Bit of fleece
Cured leather piece
Vial with 10 pinches of fine sand
You only need to track the components that cost money or are consumed by the spell.
How to know if it consumed??
-
- (a diamond worth 300+ GP, which the spell consumes)
The spell ^ revivify for instance will tell you
I am looking at sleep
V, S, M(a pinch of sand or rose petals)
Does it have a gp value or does it say it is consumed?
no none of my spells do but then if I level up and get a spell that does and I don't have it then what?
You have to purchase that component to cast the spell.
I feel like we are going round in circles here.
because it confusing to me
The component pouch, is treated the same as the wand and focus for purposes of casting spells. Its a game thats how they designed it.
You do not need to track components they are there for flavour, the only ones you need to track are those that either have a cost or are consumed and the spell will have them listed clearly in the description.
Its pretty clear, if you read the material section I pasted, you just only read the first part.
I did read it before and again and again and that why I came here
Or you can use DnDBeyond (note that you'll only be able to use free rules/SRD materials unless you buy the books)
Oh I can?
I already made one there
Guess he isn't going to waste
Different virtual table tops (VTTs) also have ways to create characters for their platform.

The most relevant text for how component pouches work is in the rules for components:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#MaterialM
"If a spell doesn’t consume its materials and doesn’t specify a cost for them, a spellcaster can use a Component Pouch (see “Equipment”) instead of providing the materials specified in the spell, or the spellcaster can substitute a Spellcasting Focus if the caster has a feature that allows that substitution. To use a Component Pouch, you must have a hand free to reach into it, and to use a Spellcasting Focus, you must hold it unless its description says otherwise (see “Equipment” for descriptions)."
How do I play online? I heard I can do that and it’s better for beginners
?tag new online
What’s like the best website for it
Okay, so I'm wondering, can an orc be a monk? Like I know in some things certain classes are set to certain species and I'm wondering if this is possible
Hello! I've been wanting to play DND with an online group for a while now.I've read the basic handbook but that was a while ago so any help with the rules and finding a group would be appreciated
There are many ways to play online - everything from using virtual table top (VTT) platforms and services to phone calls.
Or using Discord.
Best is subjective - ultimately what's best is the platform/process that works best for your D&D group to play D&D with.
Check out #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
Late reply but everything’s fine except for your spells and stats.
For spells you haven’t selected your spells that you get as a level 1 warlock. For stats you seem to have manually set them.
There are 3 official methods to generate stats, one of which is Point Buy. The normal pool of points available is 27, not 35. The official methods can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#DetermineAbilityScores
Yeah orcs can definitely be monks. There aren't any species restrictions for class.
I read that many time the book isn't built for ADHD and Dyslexia and all
Okay thank you
My friend said roll20 but doesn’t that cost money
At a basic level, without getting in to the intricacies of the text, there are 3 types of spells when it comes to material components:
- Spells with no material componemt
- Spells with a material component that is not consumed or have a GP value
- Spells with a material component that is consumed or has a cost.
Focus & Component Pouch only matter if a M component exists. They do nothing and are required for nothing otherwise.
The handling is different for each.
"1" Spells have no need for a focus or component pouch as there is no M component at all.
"2" spellscan use a pouch or Focus on place of the component. It's just assumed you find and keep it stocked and a focus just outright magically substitutes. For these components, you only ever need one so tracking stuff is unimportant.
"3" Spells either require more than one (as it is conumed) or are costly (i.e., you cannot just pick it up somewhere and pocket it), so the complications make tracking necessary.
That's basically all it is. At this stage, the rules may just confuse you but this is what the rules translate to in game on material components.
As a fellow ADHD sufferer I kinda get it
Well Roll20 has a free tier of access but that doesn't mean it's the best - again it very much depends on the group, their needs, and technical capabilities.
I also wanted to stream it cause yk I’m cool like that 🤪
I just added the non consuming one to my pouch as custom items just becasue it bug me to see it empty on my page
Now my page shows
Bit of fleece x1
Lodestones x2
Piece of cured leather x1
Vial of fine sand x 1
im currently trying to edit a bunch of the main stuff by getting access to like tashas cauldron and stuff
wait wotc explain to me how Sand isn't consumed does a Wizard after battle say (Hold on Party I gotta pick up each little peace of sand I used for sleep on the enemy and put it back XD)
Fair enough. Your character. Just be aware you do not need to do the extra tracking unless you specially want to.
You don’t need to throw sand around, you just need to have it on hand.
No, the sand is never used. The caster just holds it and can put it back.
So it like Oooh loook at the vial of sand and you will go asleep and boom it works?
trying to see it as a RP thing
Pretty much yeah, except the casting does the sleep. It is an accessory like earrings. It does not define the spell much as the accessory is more a supplement than fully defining a person.
To me that kinda weird and dumb but that just me I love tracking and sheet work and spreadsheet making
When I played ranger even when the dm said I didn't need to I still tracked my arrow as I needed reason to go to the store
You do you. Best part of D&D sometimes!
Tasha’s should only add 2 optional features and some spells for a 2014 Warlock. If you’re trying to add spells specific to TCE or want Pact of the Talisman onto a 2024 Warlock I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
i was trying to change subclass as i only have access to the fiend
2024 Warlocks don’t get their subclass until level 3
Having a tracking sheet for your components isn't a dumb idea at all. People get into that kind of thing all the time.. I know people that do stuff like draw out the pages of their wizard's spell book.
Do they need to know how reproducing a spell works? No. Visualizing the imaginative part of it is fun.
Unless you own the PHB (or another source of subclasses) Fiend is the only one available for free in the basic rules. That's why it's all you can see on D&DB
Since you mentioned Tasha’s were you planning on making a Fathomless or Genie Warlock?
hey hello im ivo and new 🙂
It would just be nice if D&D beyond wouldn't have made it a second inventory
like Clothes and Robes aren't seperate invtory
Backpacks make sense
