I have a question, How long does a campaign last?
Depends on how the DM has it made
Could be a one session or could last 4-5 months give or take
I watch way to many streams, just havenât been able to take part in one yet
Same here, watching too many made me want to be in one as well
I know this is basic af but fantasy high is by far (in my opinion) the best one Iâve watched
Some of them last years
^
Personally I like the 6-8 months duration
Get em up to level 14, let em kill god, and be on my way
Hey all, I'm creating a drow elf wizard for a campaign, I'm confused which origin feat to take. Also planning to play it as a evoker.
Initially I wanted Sage, because I get two extra cantrips for my evoker and can set mage armour as my Magic initiate spell and essentially have +2 AC for the entire game without spending spell slots but Criminal background is looking pretty good as well for the Alert feat.
Ability scores are - str 8, dex 14, con 16, int 17, wis 10, cha 8
Any advice on which would be better? Also to note, my campaign goes to lvl 12/13
For a guide to Online D&D check out this guide:

As for spaces to find games online, check out:
- This server's groupfinder, #find-a-game
- Other TTRPG & D&D discord servers,
- Other TTRPG & D&D social media groups (e.g. Redditâs r/lfg),
- Other TTRPG & D&D forums (e.g. roll20, D&DBeyond forums)
The power difference isn't going to be significantly big, all origin feats are roughly equal in power. I'd go with what you feel would fit your character better.
That being said, this is somewhat above a newbie question. If you wanted to explore the difference in depth, #character-discussion or #optimization is a great place to ask, though again if you're new and playing at an average table you likely won't feel power difference. If you want a quick summary the edge goes very slightly towards Alert.
Thanks, I'll have a look at the other channels
Why if I have a base strength of 8, it shows -1 and rolls like a -1. I am using dndbeyond
With a stat of 8 or 9, you have -1 to rolls involving that stat
For every 2 points below 11 (round down), you have -1. For every 2 points above 10 (round down), you have +1.
See it as 10 being the human average, meaning that an 8 giving -1 means that you're slightly less strong than the average person
Thanks!
Can initiative be found when creating a character or at the start of a meet?
Your initiative bonus is equal to your Dexterity + any other bonuses
Well, to be specific, any other things that say they grant a bonus to Initiative.
For most characters, it's just their Dex modifier plain and simple.
You roll for initiative (or give your initiative score, which is 10 + Dex + other initiative bonuses - your DM will tell yoy which to use) when you initiate combat or another event where tracking each creature's actions and the order thereof is important
Okay, thank you!
Cool what type did u get
I just have the starting dice that comes with the essentials kit, I got it for my birthday last week
I got 2 d20s, 4 d10s,1 d8, 2 d6s, 1 d4
Nice
Got it
I just know 1 of the d6s and 1 of the d10s are like blue steampunk looking dice
Fancy
Very cool
Ima be honest tho we dont have dnd stuff in my country besides dice
Do you guys have any suggestions for naming traditions for high elves?
Uhhhh the name must end with innit?
Idk
There are name generators for most of the DnD races.
I see⌠thank you!
I never played dnd so that kinda suckz
BUT TODAY IS FNAF X DBD SO
Cant wait
I recommend taking this convo to #dnd-discussion since the mods are very strict about people sticking to the channels' topics.
What is supoost to be discussed here?
Helping newbies and answering their questions.
Aight
Wouldn't this also be off topic? Oh crap, I did it as well
Only if the topic strays away from DnD.
Got it
Thanks! I used one to create Carcan Crimsonflower (Carl for short), what do you think?
The surname certainly sounds elvish.
Does it use ai
The one I use, fantasy name generator, has existed for years. Before this AI nonsense cropped up.
Hell yeah
FNG is also on the dndbeyond character creator
Heyyđđť

damn the palyer's handbook is always out of stock
what more from my country. I can't find a single copy
Free Rules are free, or you could go digital if you want (terms and conditions apply).
I touched the real thing last sunday. I want my own lol. I want to sleep beside it.
yeah.. I can't find one.. this is starting to make me RAGE wink wink
Is it hard to find a DM?
It can be. There are not that many DMs compared to the total number of players, considering many DMs also want to be players.
Finding a reliable DM that you also get along with is a challenge. Patience and determination is the key.
I aim to be a DM myself for my friend group who are also new and are very eager to play. but after my first game witnessing a DM who has been doing it for decades, I can tell that it's going to be a very hard job.
Keep things simple run some oneshots
Yeah. I followed metthew colville's guide
It can look intimidating from the other side of the screen, but it doesn't have to be complex. Colville does a good job at demystifying.
I just need to buy the books. Which is always out of stock so I guess I'm ordering from the main site soon.
Free basic rules are all you need
Yeah sure I don't mind that but I am more ofnlike a tactile learner. I feel motivated when I actually have the book.
Having the physical thing kinda feels like I am officially in the role. That's just me by the way.
One stop-gap solution you could use in the meantime is to print out the SRD: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
Or at least the parts of it you need.
Thanks :))

Hi! Looking at the lfp channel and i want to ask for help on what to look for and consider before joining one of the campaigns/ oneshots. Also what does d20 VTT or VTT mean in general???
VTT is virtual table top.
Itâs basically software that lets everyone see a shared digital map.
And everyone can move their characters around it, kind of like a board game.
So that everyone has a clear, shared understanding of where things are in relation to each other.
Ohhhh, is that like an app or site I need to download if I want to join those campaigns/oneshots?
Yeah. Thereâs quite a few different options out there, but anyone advertising a one-shot has likely already chosen a specific site.
So the specifics would depend on what they chose.
Some VTTs might require a download, while others just run off websites. It depends on what the group ends up using.
Roll 20 is probably the most popular choice:
https://roll20.net/
Easily create characters, organize games, purchase content, find players, and customize your story for your group - all in your browser.
But there will be plenty of time to plan once you get in touch with your DM.
I prefer Owlbear Rodeo:
https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
I see! Thank you! Hopefully once i do find a game and a DM the VTT would be easy to use lol
Hi guys! I'd like to find a group to play with! Where can I ask/search?

ah okay perfect â¤ď¸
Gooie's answer was correct, but if you find the information is easier to understand in a table format, this table in the free rules shows you the conversion for all possible ability score values (the 8) and what the corresponding modifier (the -1) would be.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#AbilityModifiersTable
Should I recap for my players or should they mostly be keeping track themselves
It doesn't hurt to do a quick recap.
he, i'm going to be the master of m first campain and am looking for games I could narrate. An recommendations?? I was looking for something engaging and also kind of mysterious and not really the typical dungeon killing monster and shit
I do like to do a short summary sometimes as we play weekly, so a quick refresher as to where we are and/or the more overarching story that got them there does help. But personally, if your summary takes more than a minute or two, you're spending too long on it unless it's been a long time since you last played or the information is going to be critical in that session.
My group rolls for 1 person to do a recap and they get an inspiration dice that can be used any time during the session. A nice carrot to encourage us to pay attention and (maybe) take some notes.
I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you looking for campaign recommendations, or something else?
Inspiration dice?
It's a feature DMs can use when something cool happens or if they want to reward a player. It allows you to have advantage on a roll during the game. In some cases, it can also be used to reroll a failed attack roll, saving throw, or ability check.
yeah, I was just wondering if u guys had any campaign recommendation for a first time master
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, Lost Mine of Phandelver, and Dragon of Icespire Peak are all newbie-friendly from what I understand.
Lost Mine of Phandelver is a good beginner module
This is great thank you.
I was about to write the same list as razorwing
Unrelated love the pfp
Thanks! Its actually commissioned art of my last D&D character
While Lunarith referred to one reason you could give it out, see Heroic Inspiration for details of one implementation:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#HeroicInspiration
Essentially, the DM can hand this out for any reason as a reward, as well as some in game features that can earn it as well.
thx for this!
Hey im looking for a new group to play with sometime today.
I play a bard named Calvin the Bald dancer. And I Wanted to be a poet archetype who can write poems to increase my parties stats

How can I bring a player to a important place if they left the party (major part of story)
You should ask this question in #dm-discussion so you can get advice from fellow DMs
that's not really a question about the basic rules and mechanics of the game
-total noob here. Is the 2024 players handbook alone good enough for a full character creation?
It is!
In fact, just the free rules is sufficient for full character creation.
The Player's Handbook adds a number of additional options onto the free rules.
Free rules in DND Beyond I'm assuming?

Hi there, I'm new to DnD, just had my 1st intro game yesterday, been into warhammer since 1995.. Introduce myself in this channel section too
I am starting my first session tonight with some friends and an experienced dm I have never played always looke interesting, we are going off of the 2024 rule guide book thing
any tips or things I should know going into this
Does anything change between lost mines of phandelver versus the shattered obelisk?
Be cool, take notes, look up a "d&d actions cheat sheet". Tests of skill or attack rolls are the round die with twenty sides. If you're not sure about how to do something, tell the DM what you'd like to happen and ask how to get there.
That's probably more #1029833015423143957!
I'm playing in a party of entirely new players including the DM and we're thinking about using premade adventure books to learn the game mechanics first. Any specific book recommendations for us?
Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or Dragon of Icespire Peak. Those are largely designed for new folks, players and DMs alike.
Cool thank you!

First time DM with three brand new players. Weâre going to run lost mines of phandelver and Iâve heard storm kings thunder is a good one to do after, but Iâve already heard itâs DM intensive? Is that something a brand new DM could potentially do?
Just looking into the future for planning
honestly lost mines of phandelver is long enough I think once you're done with it, you'll be fine with storm kings thunder, just keep in mind that you're likely going to have to change/add more things than in lost mines and be ready for that
Iâm probably gonna take my group through spelljammer after finishing Phandelver.
Storm King's Thunder is a big sandbox, which might be a bit overwhelming after running Phandelver. It spans a much bigger area and requires a lot more improv and prep. If you think this is something that you'd be up for grappling with, go for it.
However, the continuation of Phandelver, Shattered Obelisk, may be a bit easier to continue with, since it's written with Phandelver in mind and since it's more linear.
What would be a good starting race?
Any from the player's handbook are well suited.

Does this look like a standard set-up for the proficiencies & language section on a character sheet?
Languages
â˘Elvish
â˘Dwarvish
Light Armor
Perception
Weapons
â˘Longswords
â˘Shortswords
â˘Hand Crossbows
â˘Rapiers
â˘Longbow
â˘Shortbow
Yeah, looks fine!
Most characters have probably 4-6 skill proficiencies, though.
(And those proficiencies are usually recorded by instead filling in the circle next to that skill.)
Thanks! I'll have to do some more research on what other proficiencies in skill I have (I started learning D&D last week)
Assuming this is a rogue you should also have proficiency in simple weapons. I think the only simple I see here is the shortbow.
You get proficiencies from both class and background, sometimes even from your race. Also you get one more language (in the 2024 edition) and if this is a rogue you learn thieves' cant as a special language
Um
I'm a complete newbie
Anyone free that can teach me?

Hi all, UK based complete D&D newb here, looking for a friendly bunch to show me the ropes please
Welcome! It's recommended to check out the links above. If you have any particular question though, this channel is usually very quick to help.
And if you are looking for a group hit up the #find-a-game and follow the steps there to find a group or post what yer looking for
Anyone here who can teach me about homebrew weapons, spells, potions, enchantments, and atunements ?
can someone help me make a character in roll 20, never played before and wanted to pick a character that used fire but my friend said that i don't know the basics, what basics do i need ?
Hey y'all
If I put it in the command that I'm completely new and need a group that can teach me as I go
Am I likely or unlikely to get a response?
If you want to get a feel for how many and what type of proficiencies a character would have consider looking through the pre-made characters here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder# or creating one of your own using the character creator available in the same place. The free rules do have limited options but it should help you better see what types of things you can pick in character creation.
Gotta ask rlly quick but in the playstyle section of looking for dm command do I put in smth like defensive dps or aggressive healer
Or smth just very general like rogue or mage?
I think it means like do you like more roleplay or do you love combat or a nice mix, but u can put what u want
Oh thank you very much
Why is dnd so hard to get started on?? Every person looking for players is looking for players above 18 and those who have experience there is also a lot of terms in the chat I don't understand.
Also do I need to purchase anything to get started???
No, the Free Rules is all you need to get started, which can be found in this channel's pins as well as in #learn-to-play
As for terminology, quite a lot of slang is used as expected of a game with over 50 years of history đ . This channel is a good place to ask about any terms that are confusing.
And yeah, it is a little harder to get into a game as a minor. Many people prefer to play with only 18+, so for younger people I also recommend looking to see if your school has a D&D or TTRPG club, or checking your local library and game stores. Otherwise if you'd prefer an online game I'd keep going in your search; games are posted constantly so you'll get a match with enough perseverence.
Oh wow
That's a lot of things to read
Maybe I'll pull an all nighter trying to memorize the rules
Thanks
Just look at my pfp
The last thing I lack is perseverance
Don't feel like you have to memorize everything. Having a decent familiarity of the rules, and knowing where to look things up if you need to usually suffices
Of course, we're always happy to help answer questions along the way
I've watched sm magic the Noah I think is the channel name
They mentioned dnd once and that's where I got the idea to search
Do I need to have a board to anything like that to know about the setting and my surroundings or is that on the dm?
That is the DM's purview. They'll typically describe your surroundings, often but not always supplemented by a map. Required setting info is usually given before a campaign starts, after which relevant tidbits are sprinkled in session
Uh can you guide me on making a character on dnd beyond?
I don't want to make a character that no one accepts or do smth wrong while making one
Between this article (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1059-how-to-create-your-first-dungeons-dragons) and this section of the Free Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character), you should be okay on your own. Most folks unfortunately don't have time to walk someone else through the process completely.
One thing to note is that when you make a character without a DM/table, you're doing it for practice. So mistakes are fine! But that's where folks here can help.
Um what's a zombie beholder sighting?
No idea without more context!
Uh
When I try to make an account it says to contact support since I saw a zombie beholder
It also says In a footnote that there was an internal server error
Something went wrong with the platform. #ddb-support may be able to help.
Also, no need to reply directly to folks who are active in a conversation.
Oh
Usually my friends don't rlly listen so I've developed a habit

Hello
Hey
Hello
Hey folks!
This looks so fun but also looks overwhelming, whats a good way to start? I started reading character creation already

Thanks!
hello
Sup
Honestly, if all you want is rules, reading Chapter 1 and the Glossary in either the free rules or the paid Players Handbook will get you much of what you need.
The other chapters help with specific needs. For example, when you're ready to "play a Fighter", you only need to read the Cleric section of the Classes chapter. When you need to cast spells, you can read Chapter 7 for Spellcasting. If you will, pretty much every other part of the rules is basically some sort of extension or special case to the basic things in Chapter 1 and the Glossary. Even the character creation chapter is best read when you're literally sitting down to create a character.
you and me both lol
looking for a group in my part of North London
Southampton here
Seems my little piece of London is the boring ass part đ
coz outside of 1 local gaming store nobody does Warhammer or DnD
asked on reddit as well as nextdoor for my area, no replies at all
Just a heads up that this channel isn't meant for finding games. If you're looking for one on the server you can check out #find-a-game. You can also check out third party sites like Roll20 which post online games. People have also had luck looking on Facebook or Reddit (though I know you said you didn't get a response there. Good to include it as an option though :))
that's why I mentioned that I've asked elsewhere ^_^
joined the reddit dnd london group to ask there
just not getting any replies sadly
There are tons of online avenues. I assembled a fair list here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms
cheers for that info đ
Yea unfortunately it can take time to find a game. There are a lot more players than DMs so it's often not immediate.
only place I have locally a shop called the pit
and only have 1 warhammer store now too ÂŹ_ÂŹ
Libraries occasionally have tabletop programming as well.
don't even know if my local library is still going, will have to check it out đ
haven't been in there for like 25 years haha
but yeah, my part of London just doesn't seem to have much going for the scene
shame really
No geek retreats in London?
Dunno, there might be, just not where I am
just seems they want to build homes where I am
my dad was just like "why not start a group"
hmm probably because I have 0 experience with DnD đ
That's how I became a DM.
I don't even have the players handbook yet
will order it once I have ÂŁ30 odd spare for it
let alone a gaming mat, scenery etc
I assume for campaign portions that occur "outdoors" you can use stuff like age of sigmar scenery
Don't need any of that. The free rules will support everything. The rules can be done entirely without a grid even.
I like to own books ^_^
I'm a physical media kinda person đ
oldschool
you should see my old mans sci-fi collection of books, thousands of them
I was gifted my DMG, because I was willing to run it :P
going back to thruppence in pre-decimal, 1930s
There's a chance that if you try to find a group you'll find someone who doesn't want to DM but has all the books for you to borrow.
yeah noticed there's quite a few of them đ
luckily atm all I have model wise = human
once I start getting some of the models I've ordered off of etsy and ebay will have some lizardkin/dragonborn, birdkin, a "chaos dwarf" and some other ones
I use to use the little hallowe'en candies. You kill the monster, you get to eat it.
A printer, some pennies and a bit of Pritt stick and you can get all the maps and tokens you need.
outside of that I have some old GW models I can use
I wish I had the space for a printer, let alone the skill for one
so many bits I'd like to print for my warhammer models
Not a 3D printer. A paper printer.
Not a 3d printer. Regular old inkjet.
https://www.printablepaper.net/category/graph and https://donjon.bin.sh/ can get you going on that.
if I need anything bigger than A4 I can at least go to the community centre next door to get it printed đ
Do it in bits, or make modular dungeon tiles.
You have a community center next door? Do they have D&D events?
unfortunately they're not interested in getting a DnD group or Warhammer group going, already asked them, miserable gits đ
The Pit on Aycliffe Road? Looks like they'll do you for space to play.
thats the one
and yeah, just waiting for them to have a newbie spot open/start a newbie friendly campaign
I live a couple of bus rides away from there
Meanwhile, there's always online. D&D Beyond can do for the dice, Discord for voice and there's a variety of virtual tabletops out there. And the Free Rules are free!
good good, new to the whole thing so info is appreciated
never really been much for online stuff but seems it'll be about the only way I can get any games in in the meantime
i need a server to play on
anyone got links to a fun server?
one-shots or westmarches, either work for me
either that or I buy the DM book as well and play against myself đ
no need to buyy it
Have you checked #looking-for-community?
it's in the DND Beyond app
lemme check wait. thanks
again I enjoy owning books đ
Guys what does westmarches mean
I keep seeing it in lfp but i dont know what it means fienwpwpw
I've always liked this definition. Very clear.
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
In my (limited) experience, there's a pool of players (and possibly DMs). Players assemble a party ("Four of us want to explore location X"), a DM decides to run it, and they work out a mutual time. It's a little more flexible, but there's also a downside as the story may progress without you in some way when you can't play, unlike a traditional campaign.
Ohhhhhh, so like the game takes place in a universe where other campaigns are also happening?
Yep.
That seems dope
Though less "campaigns are happening" and more "these adventurers are busy adventuring, and they may group up in different combos."
Can you help explain to me what campaigns mean? From my understanding its game sessions that runs for a long time compared to one shots that usually finishes in a day.
The analogy I've heard is a campaign is like a long-running TV series. An adventure is a season of said series. A one-shot in a made-for-TV movie.
I'd liken a one-shot to one episode, following that analogy.
But a single episode doesn't need to resolve in the same way, but point taken!
That's absolutely perfect and very easy to understand so thank you!
What do you guys recommend i start with then? As a complete beginner?
I suppose 1 episode out of a long running series would be more like a session. Since that may or may not be a one-shot in plot
As a player? Try some one-shots to see if you even like the game. Or maybe a short game (a dozen sessions or fewer), though those can be hard to find.
I see, hopefully i find one soon lol
Finding a game is so hard especially because of my time zone fiwnpwkew
Scheduling is one of the hobby's toughest parts!
Happy adventuring!
im doing dexterity saving throw:
if i have dexterity as my saving throw i add proficiency
if i dont have it as my saving throw then its plain d20
does it work this way?
so then what's the difference between my rogue dexterity saving throw vs mages dexterity saving throw?? this is the most comfusing part for me so far in all th systems
i got it circled and he does not
thats as far as i understand
but what it does exactly
That means you add proficiency and they don't. The modifier and the proficiency bonus are two separate things
dexterity saving throw:
d20+dex modifier + proficiency
so for a level 1 rogue, this could be d20+dex mod+2 for example
while a mage? (wizard maybe) would only do d20+dex mod
Hey all, Iâve been dying to join a group for years. Iâve only been a part of one campaign but it was only for one session and then the DM quit and decided not to do it anymore. Iâm looking for a cool group of people who could semi-guide me/wouldnât mind having a newcomer join. Iâm personable, nerdy, outgoing, creative, and a genuinely nice guy to be around. Iâd ideally like to join a group that meets at least once a week or so (Iâm flexible). If anyone would like to include me or could give me some helpful guidance on what I should do moving forward than please feel free to respond on here or DM me directly. Thanks in advance!

I just hit lvl 4 with college of lore. What feat should I get
Im going for a mix of heals and combat fighting style
If youâd like to use this server to find a group use #find-a-game !
Well since posting in LFG resulted in mockery for my ineptitude with doing this whole Dming thing online trying to get my business start. I am not new to DND but I am in Houston and was wondering if anyone knew of an in person community that I could connect to. Probably making a fool of myself commenting in the wrong place. Thanks. đŽâđ¨
Game stores and local libraries are worth checking out. Aside from that, using Facebook, MeetUp, and city-specific subreddits and the like will probably net you some results.
my only experience with dnd is creating cartographical content for my friend, i was really good at it
Local libraries interestingly donât have a lot of info on that but I try those other suggestions appreciate it. Maybe I am a boomer officially đ
any uhhh way I can get into it
i made like well detailed general maps and even highly detailed capital/town maps
if you want an example I could send you a recent one i did
If youâd like to advertise your map making services try posting in #dnd-advertisements
Sure, ask them!
wish I could attach images
So, how do I start playing dnd
Does it have to be in person, and if so how do I find that
You can attach images
I suggest linking to your portfolio
D&D can be played both in person and online. To start learning I suggest checking out the links in this channelâs pins as well as in #learn-to-play .
As for finding groups, I suggest:
- This servers group finder, #find-a-game
- Other TTRPG or D&D servers
- Other TTRPG or D&D social media groups (e.g. Redditâs r/lfg)
- TTRPG or D&D forums (e.g. DDB forums, roll20 forums)
- Local businesses (e.g. game stores, libraries)
- School clubs (if youâre in school/uni)
Game stores such as? Hmv?
Would it always have to be with like a voice? Could it be text?
Not sure what HMV is but if they sell TTRPG materials they might have postings for local in-person games!
And D&D can be played text only, such games are called Play-By-Post (PBP) games
Okay, now what about the dming side
Actually not even the dming side, just characters in general
What about characters?
How do you make a good character
the basics are to read either the free rules or phb, and follow the rules for that
if you only follow the suggested ability score distribution for the classes, use the starting equipment, keep your primary attacking ability score as high as possible, and stick with one class, your build will be able to do well
if you are a caster, you can then search "good <casting class> spells"
if you wanna optimize after that, theres numerous guides online for that or you can ask other players
Should a character be focused on story or gameplay?
gameplay
you can fill in the blanks for storytelling, if you cannot function in a dungeon or combat the rest of the table will hate you for harming their fun
It's really a matter of balance and can depend on the game and what fits
For a one shot or a more mechanically focused campaign you might wanna focus on gameplay since story wont matter as much, while for a roleplay and story focused campaign you might wanna at least make sure your character has some motivation, goal or something that makes them interesting
but you still want to have a functional character for their class
Oh definitely. Neither should generally be ignored, but the focus can definitely depend
like you cant be a fighter with a overall +1 to hit with their main weapon
or a warlock with 8 charisma
When people post that their campaign plays using dnd beyond is that voice chat or text chat? Or does it have both?
Hi I'm new in dnd and I don't know anything.. I just found it and pretty cool.. But I don't know how to play it

I think there's a lot of us who are keen to learn, but we also can't DM
Check out the bot post above. It has information on how to post or look for a game on this server.
Bro this is too hard too understand for my tiny brain
Start with reading the free basic rules and feel free to ask any clarifying questions you may have here
Confused, I am
What parts are you finding confusing?
Like i downloaded it then made a character... Now I don't how to make or find a game
We don't have a DM!
Fine! I'll do it myself.
On second thought, I never even played one, I don't know how to DM.

I haven't look much into DMing, but from what I understand, the DM pretty much sets the premise of the entire campaign
you prepare cheat sheets and stuff
But how to make a actual campaign
I guess for beginners, a campaign with some basic and loose rules can be used?
Great that you've practiced making a character. If you're comfortable with the rules, the next step will be to search for a game. #find-a-game has instructions on how you can look for on on the server but you may have to look more broadly like though Facebook, Reddit or 3rd party online TTRGP sites like Roll20 for games. It can take time to find one because there are a lot more players than DMs.
I think building a campaign starts with imagining a world you want to explore with other people
Wait, does that mean a DM can play too???
or I think there are pre-written campaigns out there?
You can create homebrew campaigns like that but there are also prewitten modules a DM can run players though. It's up to the DM on what they and the players want to run.
a DM can play the NPCs I guess
And here I thought I'd be a badass duo with my bro here.
The DM runs the game which includes RPing all the PCs. They are the one running the game for the players but they have a lot of fun too.
That is what I'm trying to find but can't find anything
might be in this server. let me find out
I think it would be helpful for you all to check out the resources in #learn-to-play
Dms guild has a ton of pre written campaigns, d&d beyond has them too. Most of the adventure books are pre-written campaigns ie: curse of strahd, Rime of the frost maiden, storm kings thunder
I think the amount of information can seem overwhelming at first
Names sound NICE!!!
hii
I personally haven't played much RPG in general. I just like storytelling, exploration, adventure, and fantasy
It can totally be overwhelming at first. It's why they have places like this to help new players
Mods like Calamity are great
can you suggest a beginner friendly one shot @plucky ridge ?
Lost Mines of Phandelver is the most common and is generally considered a good beginner friendly module
Lesgo @elder dagger we'll play Lost Mines of Phandelver.
My little brain is cooked

Me too! Me Giant Paladin, Me learn DnD.
If you want to try and find a group to play with, read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use our Looking For Game Channels.
We can't really teach people one on one here on the server - too many people and too little time
oh thanks!
But the instructions told me to find DnD Discord đ˘đ˘
But we'd be happy to answer any specific questions about D&D here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)
oh i see yeah thats fair
Lost Mines of Phandelvar: Shattered Obelisk can be found on licensed platforms like Roll20, FoundryVTT, Fantasy Grounds, or even on DnDBeyond (which is owned by Wizards of the Coast/D&D).
oops realised I can't post and invite here
Also, it must be a per library thing.
I remember one of my players dms at a library for some kids, and they were forced to leave because one of them swore
Yeah
Love this moduel We are at lv 7 and just finished The rest
Hello
Where do I put the looking for community command is that here or in a different channel
Anywhere you can type here in the server will do (but #find-a-game is nice because it will delete your message automatically after you're done sending it)
Thanks also if I do the find a DM command do I have to have people to play with already or how does that work
If you are advertising a community D&D server (many players, many DMs, many D&D games), use the command to post in #looking-for-community
If you are a group of players looking for a DM, use #looking-for-dm
If you are a DM looking for players to join your game, use #looking-for-players
If you offer paid games (even if the first session is free) use #paid-looking-for-game
Ohh ok thank you
So, where would I send the command for looking for players?
Anywhere on this server you can type
Alright, thank you
H
I will warn that THe below portion is a bit linar its possible to make it feel not so
Hello! Question on character creation. Where do we find the rules for creating a character for a prewritten module?
Hi! I'm new to the server and thought I'd ask some questions...
How do warlocks work, and how could I integrate warlock characteristics into my characters design? Also, what is a good race for a warlock?
Character creation rules are included as part of the Free Rules. More options can be unlocked if you buy the relevant books, but the Free Rules has everything essential. I don't think any of the official pre-written modules have any special restrictions, but a module that does should say so.
Have you checked out the Warlock class page?
As for species, any and all species are good with Warlock. Species has very little if any impact on class and vice versa
I got some help in ankther channel, just need help picking a class....
Idk what would make a good vampire...
Hello đ
Hi
Welcome!
Vampirism is a little hard since the actual iteration in the rules is generally not available as a player option, and certainly not at character creation. As a compromise I suggest taking a look at the Dhampir lineage, available via Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft
Isn't that a different campaign?
VRGR is a sourcebook, which does contain a campaign. But it also includes monsters, subclasses, lineages (like Dhampir), etc
In any case anything published by Wizards of the Coast (WotC, D&D's parent company) is considered official content and therefore cross-compatible with any other official content
While there used to be some setting specific races (e.g. Warforged used to be only in the Eberron setting), such "restrictions" are only suggestions at the narrative level. Nothing rules-wise prevents you from playing a Dhampir outside of the Ravenloft setting.
Hello đ
hey there
I am so confused and my brain is super fried! I bought the starter and essential set and wanted to get into this exciting game but Iâm soooo lost after 6hrs of studying and reading and notes and videos 𼲠the math and checks and proficiencyâs are so much if there is anyone that can help or knows a way that me and the family could join some type of online newbie game to learn that would be awesome
yeah, I just had an intro game on Monday, even though I've been into wargaming for like 30 years, and the character set up was pretty intense đ
I did it like a decade ago with some old roommates but I just blanked đ¤Śđť
Learning videos can help but reading but there is no substitute for the first 2 chapters of the basic rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
hello
I basically have only really played Warhammer/40K/Epic/Necromunda etc
finally got round to DnD coz frankly I can't keep up with actually playing warhammer đ
9th ed 40K I got in like 3 games.. 10th ed I've had like 2-3 games and it'll be replaced next year already coz of the 3yr cycle
so decided to get into something else
especially so now Games Workshop have basically told all of us we can't play instore anymore (UK at least) coz most of the stores are 1 staff only
At a basic level though, much of the game is a back and forth conversation between a Dungeon Master and a group of players. The Dungeon Master creates the situations that the player characters deal with, sets the rules, adjudicates outcomes, and acts as the players' senses (Eyes, ears, etc.) To the world that they are interacting with.
Dice are pretty much there to decide certain outcomes where the outcome could be considered unclear. To do this, the roll Is almost always roll a d20 (20-sided die), add a bonus based on one of the base 6 ability scores, with possibly some additional bonuses, and compare the total to a difficulty set by the rules or DM, with higher pretty much always equal to a better result.
Everything basically revolves around the narration and those d20 rolls.
There are 3 types of d20 rolls, ability checks (think "skills"), attacks (you rolling to hit something or someone else), and saving throws (you rolling to save yourself from someone or something bad that might hurt you).
Your character that you create is just you determining or stating how your character fits in, what their story is, what they are good or bad at, what "in game tools" they will have to use during the game, etc.
But at its core, y'all just sit down at a table to tell a story and sometimes the dice will help shape the story when a narrative or inevitably unavoidable outcome is not present.
Is there any servers to play with thats allowing under 18 players.?
hi.. i really wanna play DND but i literally have no friends and no knowledge of playing DND someone pls adopt me into ur group or something đ
If youâd like to get started learning check out this channelâs pins and #learn-to-play !
If youâd like to use this server to find a group use #find-a-game . Unfortunately soliciting a game outside the proper channels is against server rules
Keep in mind posting your age is against server rules.
For finding a game that accepts minors, a posting should list that explicitly. If not, it always helps to ask. You can also see if your school, library, or local game store has a D&D club or D&D games available
A sad reality of life is that there are bad people looking to mess with under 18s, good people trying to protect them, and defiant youths that feel they can get away with anything, and some people just find it easier to stay clear of those under 18 than deal with any of the possible fallouts with those 3 groups. As much as it might suck for an under 18, this is one way we keep the game relatively safe and friendly to all.
Cal kinda hits the nail on the head
There are groups for underaged players but if certain DMs specifically state that they're looking for people of a certain age for their games or fail to state it and weren't aware of the possibility of someone so young join their group, they might be inclined to replace you.
Some people also just don't vibe with people of a certain age. It's only fair that they look out for their best interests and find someone else who they're more comfortable with.
Yes! I primarily look for 25+ just because I dont tend to mesh with people younger. I've had MULTIPLE situations where people lied to me about their age because they just wanted to play and it made things SUPER awkward for me.
Please respect the boundaries of other people. It's also important for keeping yourself safe!!
Same, I'm also much more comfortable with people over a certain age.

most people here are probably in the NA time zones and asleep, so its a bit less active. and of course, people tend to engage more with concrete prompts or questions
Hey yall so I just realized I can use purchased races in D&D beyond, yet they donât show up when I go to create a character. Looked it up and turns out I need to sync my entitlements, but I donât see that option. Is it because Iâm on mobile? Any help is appreciated
?tag ddb entitlements
Account Entitlements
Account entitlements are how D&D Beyond identifies which content you can access. These are synced automatically in time, but if you're not seeing content you should have access to, visit Account > Licenses.
The Account Entitlements section at the top should ideally say "Your entitlements data is in sync!" If not, it will show a button to manually trigger the sync, after which your content should be available.
You need to use the website to access this
idk where to starts
It sort of depends on what you are stuck on but the free rules answers a lot of questions.
ight
I would recommend learning what all the basic rules are
(initiative, attack roles, damage rolls, ac, hp and stuff like that) because everything in the game uses a few core ideas
ight
For example, if you are unsure where to start on creating a character, Chapter 2 of the free rules can be followed step by step to create one.
im using roll20
The process is the same. Roll20 is just a different presentation of the visual representation of the character.
ight
hi
Morning
Hey i have a question
Im running my first campain and i have a monster that can turn invisible and i wandered if there is a better way to play it in combet cuz right now i need to remamber where the monster is on the bourd without putting the thing there (so the pleyer cant see it)...i dont have the rules on me so idk how to run it
Players know where invisible creatures are at all times, unless the invisible creature succeeds at the Hide action.
For questions like this, though, #dm-discussion would probably be the better option.
So what is the poing of invisible?
And thx i will take it over theređ
the invisible condition gives it a bunch of benefits. knowing where something is isn't the same as being able to see it. Many features key off of "a creature you can see," and attacks made against it have disadvantage, while attacks made by it have advantage.
The primary points of going invisible are:
- Having advantage on attacks against creatures that can't see you
- Imposing disadvantage on attacks from creatures that can't see you
- Ignoring opportunity attacks
- Not being targetable by any spell or effect that says "Target creature you can see..."
Ah but the playera know where it is got it thx
Yes, until a creature takes the Hide action, players can detect where they are, usually by sound or other context clues
Is there anywhere to play dnd online in a video chat room?
Yeah, thatâs how most online groups play.
what die is the d10? is it the 0-9 die, or the 10s die
tysm

Unfortunately this server gets so many new players that it's a bit unrealistic for us to have one on one rules learning sessions. Thankfully, all the basic rules are completely free and linked above!

what do they mean by
if the characters are on the road, an encounter occurs on a roll of 18 or higher on a d20.
Does that mean if I roll a 18 or higher , i roll again for a mosnter on the encounter?
Running curse of stradh in a couple of days if you're up for that. LEtting you know im a noob DM lol
Hello
ive never really gotten to play an actual dnd game other than bg3 but i love playin bg3 and would love to experience an actual proper game for once
Check #find-a-game to use this server to find a group to play with!
it was kinda a statement lol
im planning on chilling here for a bit reading stories before finding the right group to jump into
Yes, the 18+ is determining if an encounter occurs. It is a generally a different roll to determine what that random encounter will entail.

Heya, i am new in this realy, i only played a single campain XDDD
And i don't speak English very well, sorry for that xd

4 am
Is it New York time?
-# heyyyy guysss
... eeehh i am not from usa XDDDD
Hey, how are You
Hehehe I am not in the US either
I'm good!
I'm just a big new person to dnd
Nice
I always just observed it from the sidelines, if that makes sense
I think most of us are in the same boat
That's fair lol
Nice x2, My character it's a new sorcerer and have a travel in search of Redemption
Yep
Do any of you know a way we can play? I can think of DND Beyond, but the problem is who will be the DM. I don't know how to be a DM. lol

Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Another server I joined uses roll 20 to facilitate west marches
Thats make sense xd
Only thing I don't like about roll20 is that it isn't mobile friendly
I understand, but in this group, how common is it to find a game?
Thats realy
Many games are posted here every day, but there is an imbalance between DM's and players, partially due to the structure of the game
I'm just looking to get started! XD
This server is a great place to look, but I do recommend also checking out Mr. Smith's suggestions. Casting your net wide and using as many groupfinding resources as possible greatly enhances your chance of finding a game to join
Started joining a group or learning the game in general?
Well, for the former definitely use the resources above. For the latter I recommend checking out #learn-to-play
Me too
I wanted to join a group, i leaning a loot of the game with the books and guides
That channel and the pins in this channel both have links to the Free Rules. I recommend flipping through it and making a practice character (conveniently, the rules cover the character creation process). This allows you to:
- Get a familiarity of the rules
- Reinforce your knowledge of your character sheet
- Get a sense of the themes and expected power presented by the game
I learn more by doing than reading. I can retain the information all day long. But that experience is what does it for me
I have a photographic memory , so it's not hard to forget
But.
When you're completely new there is definitely a learning curve
Making a practice character does that somewhat, in the sense you're actively applying the knowledge of the rules to make a legitimate PC
It also massively helps increase your chances of getting into a group &/or eases the transition process since people will spend less/little time teaching you.
That's pretty much what i'm looking to do
I created my first character on beyond. But I have yet to join a campaign or march
That being said, full memorization isn't super necessary. It's often better to just be familiar and know where/when to look things up.
There are some servers out there that will work with players one on one
And as a group
If You find one, call me please xd
That'll be covered in the Dice section of the rules, which goes over the various dice the game uses and when you might expect to use them
When the dm say
And when You do a atack or an action
Not all actions beget a dice roll
But which dice lmao
Here is the section on dice from the Free Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Dice
Thats true
D20 i Guess x,d in my case it's d20
Usually to roll for an attack you roll a d20 and add the hit modifier
Me gustarĂa saber hablar mejor el ingles XDDD
Exactly, or a elemental bonus
With a d4
Wait, I got this discord channel out of play now. Is this not for a campaign?
Momento...uno de ustedes habla espaĂąol?
Good question
Weapon damage or unarmed strike damage is from a d4 to a d12 of damage plus modifiers
Server language is English, for various reasons.
In summary to describe the most common function of each die:
- The d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 are typically used for damage mechanics
- The d20 is typically used for the d20 Test, which includes skill checks, saving throws, and attack rolls
- The d100 is typically used by the DM to roll on various tables (typically random event or loot tables)
I understand xd
And a pair of d10 to roll for percentile for a d100
No, this is the official D&D server. If you'd like to find a game using this server check out #find-a-game
Yep
Yup, the standard "d100" is actually a normal d10 (0-9) and a special d10 (00-90), where rolling 00-0 = 100 and 00-1 = 1
Star take me through my first runnnnnnn!
Though some DMs who like to flex can buy an actual 100-sided die
Good
That exist? Waos
Tomorrow the 1000-sided die will be a reality
Sorry, I only run private games. I recommend browsing through the resources provided to find a newbie-friendly game (it also doesn't hurt to ask if it's not explicitly advertised). The server also has an intro event every month, though I forget when the next one is
DX

I Will wait to play in the university with My Friends
Thats the only way for now x,d

Hi guys, im new to dnd. I have already created a character. Im looking for a group to play with, im heavy into roleplay and i read a lot of fantasy. Im up for weekly play.

As a paladin (level5), am I able to wear a halberd + shield?
No halberd is 2 handed
What would you recon? Paladin with helberd + polearm master (+ sentinel later) or longsword + shield and ??? as feat?
Personally, I prefer spear and shield with PAM but without the Sentinel.
Basically, your decision comes down to better AC and possibly something like dueling or shield master, vs. 1 extra average damage per attack, polearm master benefits and Sentinel. Personally, I find the advantages of polearm master with 10' reach tail off in later tiers where more monsters have more 10 ft reach and use less melee attacks.
What were a good setup for leading a online session?
The best setup is one that works for both DM and players.
At a minimum, you need some way to communicate and some way to share dice rolls. Discord will do for the first. D&D Beyond, a virtual tabletop or even something like rolldicewithfriends (a website) will do for the second.
Everything else is a question of what you want.
Even sharing dice rolls Iâd argue is optional.
But unless youâre playing with people you really trust, then itâs probably a good idea.
Thereâs tons of different tools available, though, because different groups have different needs.
What your own group needs is something youâd have to discuss with your group.
This article covers some of the more popular choices, though:

If you want some more free options that isnât Dnd Beyond for maps and Characters then might I suggest roll 20.
Hey I have had an interest in dnd for a while but I don't know how to get into it. Is there any advice anyone can give to a completely clueless beginner

Welcome! Check out the useful resources in #learn-to-play and pinned here in the channel.
Feel free to ask any specific questions as you run into them.
As far as advice goes: you don't need to learn everything, and you don't need to learn it all at once.
I'll give it a read thanks đ
You can start with the Basic Rules. Focus on learning chapter 1 and the Rules Glossary.
Then learn how the rest of the book is outlined so that you can easily look things up as needed.
It is a big book.
But again, you don't need to learn everything.
If you're not playing a character that can cast spells, you don't need to learn how spellcasting works.
If you're playing a Monk, you don't need to learn how the other classes work.
If you're starting at level 1, you don't need to know how your level 20 abilities work.
It does still take some time!
Again, chapter one and the Rules Glossary are the parts you really ought to know, regardless of what kind of character you're playing.
alright I'll get that noted
Might have to make a cheat sheet đ
If you just search online for "D&D cheat sheet", you'll find tons of them freely available.
oh perfect
But making your own can help you better retain that information.
yes of course
There's some good cheat sheets here:
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
I think its right to think most of us here are ADHD people.
So, as one myself, would it be possible to learn as you go rather than read all dat?
It depends on the situation. If you're hoping to join a bunch of strangers, odds are better that you'll be welcomed if you have some understanding. If you're playing with friends (or at a session that's explicitly about learning), then you don't need to know much prior.
makes sense.
nobody needs to read the entire phb in one go
they probably read the first few chapters, then select the class they will play as
the learning as you go part is more applicable for specific spells, different classes, different weapons, and edge cases
I like what spam said earlier:
It is a big book.
But again, you don't need to learn everything.
If you're not playing a character that can cast spells, you don't need to learn how spellcasting works.
If you're playing a Monk, you don't need to learn how the other classes work.
If you're starting at level 1, you don't need to know how your level 20 abilities work.
#character-discussion would be where to ask!
DnD unfortunately does require some reading, and there are quite a lot of rules (though you only truly need to memorize just a few). Just think of how much longer a session would take if someone had to constantly stop and explain what's happening. For most groups, that's a big cut into the time that they've set aside to play, and isn't the most respectful for their schedules.
𼲠i love how everyone jumps into help.
thank you đ
ah yh also. we create different characters per play or we persist the same?
even to some level?
if you are playing multiple sessions that fit in one storyline (a "campaign"), most people stick with the same character
if you are playing sessions that have no relation to each other, you can try out different characters
Yeah, most games it's assumed you'll be playing the same character, and that you'll start at level 1. As you play more, your character will slowly level up and become stronger.
If you decide to join up with a second DM for a different game, you'll probably be making a whole new character for that campaign.
đŚ
learn as you go it is
Look at how to do ability checks and attacks, put a starting character together. If you need to know how to do spells, that too. Grabbing a cheat sheet might help.
hey friends!!!! i heard there is a new 2024 rogue thing that has a counter as a cunning? i think?
imagine ish, someone swings a sword at rogue and rogue cuts off his fingers as a counter
You can see the 2024 rogue features here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Rogue
Nothing about a counter using Cunning Action (assuming that's what you mean).
Thereâs no rule anywhere for cutting off fingers.
okay good to know
it was just an example tho
what about not cunning, actually ill just read
Typically when your character acts in response to something (like being attacked), they'd use what's called a Reaction.
aah, i see
Any rule that gives you a Reaction will define what the trigger is and what you can do in response.
Once you use a Reaction, you can't use another until the start of your next turn.
Rogues get one called Uncanny Dodge at level 5.
When an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack roll, you can take a Reaction to halve the attackâs damage against you (round down).
So it would apply in the scenario you described, but it's a defensive move, not an offensive one.
i see, that probably what it was then!!! thank u for being patient!!
The only Reaction every character can use is the Opportunity Attack:
You can make an Opportunity Attack when a creature that you can see leaves your reach. To make the attack, take a Reaction to make one melee attack with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike against that creature. The attack occurs right before it leaves your reach.
Specific reactions to attack a target who just attacked you are few and far between, unfortunately đ
This one has a different trigger. Instead of happening when you're attacked, it happens when a creature leaves your reach.
But this one does let you attack in response.
Again, though, you only get one Reaction until the start of your next turn.
So you can spend that on either Uncanny Dodge or an Opportunity Attack -- not both.
Just as another example, a level 10 Path of the Berseker Barbarian could do what you're looking for:
When you take damage from a creature that is within 5 feet of you, you can take a Reaction to make one melee attack against that creature, using a weapon or an Unarmed Strike.
yo
Have really enjoyed "the shattered obelisk" as a western for several newcomers. Everybody knows the tropes for a New sheriff and his deputy friends coming into town.
And everybody loves a train heist.
Ordered a Nanny Ogg model
thinking of running it as a bard đ
for the lolz of having an old woman doing the seduction rolls
Nanny Ogg from discworld?
I have a quick question regarding the amount of cantrips and spells for a druid in 5e. I'm currently creating a druid (level 1) for the first time (never done magic stuff before).
How many cantrips does my character know?
I'm an wood elf druid. As I understand it i get:
2 cantrips by defaults (freely choosen),
+1 cantrip for lvl 1 primal order with magician focus
- Cantrip Druidcraft (due to being a wood elf)
so 4 Cantrips in total? is that correct?
And regarding spells, I get 4 to "prepare/use" for the day (until next long rest) and I have 2 spellslots so I can cast 2 spells (until the next long rest). Just wanna clarify and not make any mistakes, this is very new to me
Looks all correct to me. 4 Cantrips & 4 Prepared from what you have chosen. 2 you can cast of those prepared 4.
nice, thanks!
Yes
Oh just going through some boxes, found my old Nurgle lord on horse
Real question is how does dnd even work

Hello. I need some help bcause i'm new here. So... What do i need to jave when i want to be a DM?
A general understanding of the rules, an idea for a game session/adventure, rulebook to refer to (can be the free rules), dice, and players with character sheets and dice for themselves.
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the gameâs lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Hereâs a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnât competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Thx
Also feel free to check in with folks in #dm-discussion to see how other DMs do things

Hey Nick Those links are a great start
can a characterâs class be dragon or just dragonborn? (whatâs the difference)
Dragonborn is a race aka species, your species is what your character IS. A class is what your character DOES, you can have a dragonborn fighter or a dragonborn mage for example.
thank you i just went through them.
ohhhh okay that makes sense thank you
There are no playable dragon species, though. Dragonborn are the closest it gets.
Theyâre basically like humanoid descendants of dragons.
sad times.
Hi
Hi
You new to this game to?
Very much so đ
Yea, same here, I'm just trying to learn to surprise my dad for his birthday in a few months
That's fair my dad used to play when he was younger and I always liked the idea of dnd just never knew where to start or even how to
That's so sweet!
Why are you trying to learn, or starting out
Makes sense
I just looked around and found this place, looked like the best place to learn in my opinion
in the 2024 monster manual, kobolds are now officially Dragons, it's possible that when the playable version's reprinted they will also be Dragons
My dad told me story's about how his closest friends were the ones he played dnd with and I thought it would be fun and maybe he would get back into it if I learn
its probably to distinguish them from Dragonborns, which are humanoids who were created by dragons to fit their likeness (or in dark sun, one sorcerer-monarch's failed science experiments)
I find it a pretty cool game from what I've seen so far, which isn't much, but I'm pretty sure my dad used to play, if he doesn't still, so I thought it would be a pretty fun birthday surprise, so I guess we're both here because of our dads in some way
Thats sweet to see people joining because of family, hope you guys find a good dm and enjoy dnd all i can say is prepare for chaos and remember that your imagination has no bounds with stories and characters
You don't know if he still plays? Like, it kinda matters what format he plays/played
Yea I've tried a few other servers but they weren't to good with newcomers and told me if I don't know everything then I couldn't join them so it's been a Bit rough trying to learn
Yea, I'm trying to find out
Oh I see!
Doesn't sound good, this is the first place I'm trying
This server is great for newcomers, i only have about a year ish experience and i love it although sadly im looking for a new party but once you find a long lasting party you will enjoy it so much
LOL I've been playing for 20 years now and I have to google stuff every week
Ha
Yeah DnD has too much to memorise dont worry to google or ask anything
Okay, got it đ
I have to sometimes google how basic rules work to jog my memory lol
I mean especially since the new 2024 rules came out last year! Like no one can memorize everything...
I hate change i like my lil old rules of 5e :)
Yea my dad wasn't to supportive when I asked if he could help me out, since I have autism he doesn't think I'll be able to figure it out đŽâđ¨
Wha-
the 2024 rules are similar enough to 2014
Well that's rude, especially from your own father
you can get by
DnD IS autism lets be real we ALL got it a lil DnD is KNOWN for the tism
yeah lol I run the DND club at my school and i'd say it's >50% autism?
3 diagnosed 3 undiagnosed probably (respectfully)
It's hard rules and routines
Yea that was what I was thinking since when I get into something I'm really really into it I'm just kinda weird when it comes to learning things
And it's like, lore to get obsessed over
Okay
Trust me once you get in campaign vcs youâl realise that everyone is goofballs that are only calm due to societal norms and would 100% run around skipping if they could
I've found just doing something while someone's explaining it helps but I haven't found people willing to teach me đĽ˛
What does vcs mean?
Me and tons of people would help :D
Voice Chats
at a minimum, at least familiarize yourself with the first 2 chapters of the basic rules
I made a character on there but it still kinda confuses me đ
Trust me, use DNDbeyond app it shows all powers, classes etc with VERY descriptive dictionaries on EVERYTHING when u click it
What confuses you? I can try to help
its honestly up to you
yeah people hate on dnd beyond but it's kinda great. A little moneygrubby but otherwise very useful
It's a lot to read and try to familiarize myself with
Do you mind helping me learn as well
Ofc
i prefer filling character sheets either on paper or a google sheet since i need an excuse to look through the rulebook/dndbeyond sources
That's what I'm really excited about
and get familiar with the character building rules
No dont read it all, make a character and if you see something that catches your interest skim through what it says
I like reading
I would really appreciate the help
Make your character based on their CHARACTER first. Stats and shit should come second.
Look at classes you like the name of and just skim through abilities, backstory and what further levels do etc thats main focus
Exactly
i think there's pregens for most of the character classes
Just pick what you think looks cool and just read and decide if thats what you want then just make it up as you go along tbh
Would someone mind sending me a list of all the classes I could choose from to set up a character sometime in the future?
I did make a character on there it was a lot of reading
Uhh let me look rq
Thank you
This article has a good overview.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
Okay, thank you
I'll go check that out real quick
I'm thinking about starting off with a fighter or monk, but I'll have to go for a bit, my phone is about to die, I'll talk to you all later, and spam, thanks for the article, I'll remember that info for the future
Barbarian(hulk like character, dumb but strong)
Bard(music to fight and use magic through song)
Cleric(priests who use magic through religion)
Druid(powers of nature and can become animals etc)
Fighters(self explained use weapons to fight and focus on attacks)
Monks(hand to hand combat and martial arts)
Paladin(dont know much im sorry)
Rangers( dont know alot im sorry but like archers i think)
Rogue(fight in shadows, good for thieves)
Sorcerer(got magic powes through bloodlines)
Warlock(deals with the devil for power)
Wizard(power through learning magic like magic schools that teach magic)
Thats my own description of the basic classes sorry if not accurate enough
And these are my basic depictions of them they can be seen and described however you choose
These are great descriptions but my #1 questions with my students is like "What do you WANT to play" because then it's easier to just recommend a class
Are you able to multiclass
Yes
With those
But theres costs
and mechanically wise:
- Barbarian: close-quarters weapon user who specializes in melee combat and taking damage
- Bard: spellcaster who has lots of roleplay skills
- Cleric: tanky spellcaster with lots of buffing and area control spells
- Druid: spellcaster who has big area control spells and can turn into an animal to solve problems
- Fighter: weapon user who is good at every weapon and can be as complex or simple as you want it to be
- Monk: highly mobile melee combatant who enhances their hits with psionic powers
- Paladin: super soldier who deals burst single target damage and can cast support spells
- Ranger: uhh
- Rogue: weapon user who has lots of roleplay skills
- Sorcerer: spellcaster who has fewer spells but has ways to change some effect of these spells
- Warlock: magic archer class who can throw out a big spell every combat
- Wizard: spell collector who has a spell for every problem
You have to split your levels equally with multiclass
I went with rogue
Don't forget artificer! --Complicated bullshit
If you want a multiclass as soon as possible you need to be level 2 and put one level in each
Okay
Your character has levels that you put into classes
LOVE rogue
I at least know that
Levels put into classes give you access to more in that class, put more into monk and you get more monk stuff. Put it into fighter more if you want more fighter stuff
Mhm
I know, just want to make sure fully
:)
I do not recommend multiclassing most of the time
especially if you are new
Why not? Is it the level cost
every class will eventually become powerful if you stick with them, since every level you take in a class gives them some new feature that will automatically become useful if you monoclass
if you multiclass, it is possible to take a class feature that you will not use, therefore "wasting" levels
Oh, okay
It depends on the person but yes i myself dont like multiclass until like level 10 where i like messing around like i did a warlock fighter
So it's sometimes like a high risk high reward situation, or it could just be a high risk low reward, like that most of the time?
Do I have that right
Multiclassing is mostly a roleplay thing IMO
yes
there are only a few strong multiclass builds
Yes
Okay
and even they are not too much better than monoclass builds
Imo warlock fighter is good
In my opinion. Yes. It's not optimal because leveling one class gets your their best stuff. But if your character has reasons to multiclass, then why not? It's fun!
i said "a few", a fighter dip is one of these
I like my lil lvl 8 multiclass of warlock fiend and fighter champion đ
but then you could just not walk into melee range
What kinds of spells could I learn as any spell caster class, I'm assuming it's different per class
Oh for sure, loaded questiohn
Yes each spell class has different spells
Thought so
Again I'd ask what do you WANT to do
Imo warlock is more combat oriented spells?
Is there any class combination where I could be a necromancer?
Wizard
Wizard, maybe Warlock
Okay, got it
Each one has necromancy spells but wizard and warlock have more necromancy feels
either that or Cleric
Okay
Cleric is good too, sure
Question is loki, what would you want to do as a necromancer?
Or what kind of character do you want for this?
Oooh right. Necromancers can have different goals
Cleric of the grave is real fun but it's different from a wizard necromancer
(I love characters that follow Kelemvor)
Well, I want to know if I could use a bag of holding (which I'm pretty sure is an item) with a spell that could let me make stuff out of any spare materials (if there is any) and make armor for an army of undead, then if they get defeated, take the armor, and use it as materials for the next batch
Uh yes
Okay
Sounds like a series of spells though
There would be ways
Yea
But multiple spells etc maybe even a multiclass?
It would need mending maybe and a proficiency such as leatherworker proficiency
Do you know any campaigns that are accepting newcomers?
Find them in #looking-for-players
Ohh alright thank youu
Okay, so like a mage/warlock, leather worker, blacksmith multi class or something
Yes
Okay
uhh
Huh
That idea is correct, talk to a dm about how to go around it to be honest because the dm could have their own stuff about it?
so any class with Animate Dead can start their army of zombies once they gain access to that spell
K
the issue might be getting them armor, the simplest answer would be to go Cleric since they have Animate Dead and numerous buff spells
Only Wizard and cleric has animate dead
like Bless or Shield of Faith
Leatherworker proficiency with cleric or wizard class focusing on necromancy?
I was thinking of collecting any leather or iron scraps I could find and using a spell (if there is on) that would let me, turn it into armor, emerald
Dont think theres a make armour spell but you can (i think) make armour during long rests
Okay, then would I be able to collect said armor off the eliminated undead army to reuse it
get proficiency with either the Leatherworkers (make leather armor) or Smiths Tools (any metal armor)
Yes
Got it
Good
If the damage is minimal on armour you could use mending to repair it
What if I just broke it down and remade it?
i need to double check where you get profiencies with tools
Okay
You can yes, but for a quick fix mending could work
perfect
Yes
This sounds more and more fun as time goes on
As stated by the spell if its no larger than a break of 1 foot in dimension it can be fixed by the mending spell so small dents or breaks smaller than 1 foot can be broken
the Artisan background gives you access to 1 of any tool proficiency and an int increase
Got it
So if its a small break in armour you can fix it with a spell, if larger just break it down and make a new one
That gives you a quick fix if small enough
so you can be a Wizard, who uses intelligence as their main ability score, that likes to collect necromancy spells and making stuff using the tools they're proficient in, including armor with either leatherworkers or smiths tools
Yup
Thanks for telling me all this, but I'm getting tired, so I'm gonna go to bed for the night, and any free time I get tomorrow, I'll be back so we can keep talking bout this
And wizards are normally weak in fighting combat so using undead armies to fight for you is good to avoid danger
Good to talk to you hope to hear from you again
Summons cannn be a lil bit tricky
Yeah but if thats what the player wants then its up to them
Imo the best trick a wizard has is to never get in a close up fight to begin with.A pop, a skip, and a lil cast of misty step often does a better trick at keepin you safe
in that case, id be prepared and have the stat blocks of the summons ready
They want to use undead armies
Ah, well, 5e dosent really accomodate for "army" sized summons. The most you can get is like, 8-16?
Which is good, very good. Not army good tho
8 is more than enough imo for encounters
Animate Dead gives you 1 starting at 3rd level, but it upcasts really well
then you can use a Summon- spell, like Summon Undead, to get 1 more stronger albeit temporary summon
I like summon shadowspawn
Its like, the most thematically cool summon imo
Basically invoking the shadows from another dimension to fight for you has a flair to it that skelly-men cant quite reach
here's a good piece of advice for new players: You're only a Murderhobo if the rest of the party are also Murderhobos, otherwise you're just a pain in the ass
what are some things that you guys absolutely need from your players or that you as a player write for your dm to know about your character? im having trouble with coming up with stuff for my character and im not sure what else i might need
like. what we write in backstories?
well a backstory in my opinion should include why your character is where they are. for example a shell shocked elf who escaped from a war traumatized and wanted to use adventure to escape his trauma, it gives a motivation for the character to be adventuring and also gives them some depth
so basically just my reason for adventuring? what else do you add for your character?
like their overall life story. where they were born, what they believe in, etc
how do ppl find dnd groups if they dont have friends who play it
There are lfg places all over. This discord even has its own dedicated space for group finding: #find-a-game explains how it works
For more info on other places, check iamrazorwings unofficial lfg guide:

I want to be a DnD master. Any tips on how I can start?
I usually recommend the Running the Game series by Matt Colville:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
He goes over a lot of the DM basics.
The free Basic Rules also have good DM guidance. Well worth a read:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
Thanks
Is there a certain role or level you have to be in the server to start advertising your games?
I don't believe there's a time-limit to make a post following the instructions in #find-a-game , but there is a 30-min waittime to post links if you've just joined the server iirc
Thanks
How do I figure out the character stats? Like what do I put in them?
Do you mean the ability scores, or more generally?
For the former, here's the relevant rules section: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
I recommend the Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
All types honestly
use the array, or roll 4d6 and subtract the least
point buy is complicated i dont recommend it
Well, then scroll up in that same link. It goes through the steps of building a character. It should touch on all points, but feel free to ask here if something specific is confusing.
Okay thanks
Hey um sorry to randomly send in my first message like this, however how do I find a dnd campaign and play with a group? I was always playing dnd with some friends but I had a falling out and I'm probs going to get removed but I still really like dnd and don't want to just drop it :/
See here, a few messages up: #dnd-newcomers message
Hi, I'm new here, I want to ask one thing; I'm an Italian player of D&D, a master for precision, where I can find a PDF file of the new character sheet (the 2024 one) in Italian for my players?
hello i'm a french player and i search a campaign come in my DM for discuss
If youâd like to use this server to find a group check #find-a-game . Unfortunately soliciting a game outside of the proper channels is against server rules
Sorry i didn't see this line
The Roll20 game search has a language filter, that might help you.
