are you only allowed only one race or can you mix them?
one race only, although there are a few that are available that are a mix, Half-Elf, Half-Orc
You can describe your species how you like—provided the rest of the table's on board with it—but if you're hoping to mix and match actual features, you're likely out of luck.
ok thanks
So im trying to get away from being a clerk again for my next character because my last one was a complete psychopath. I was planning to be a changeling but i couldn't figure out what role i'll be. my only requirement is that death will be done.
they make AMAZING rouges, just sayin
what exactly can i do as a rouge?
Sneak attack
They are thieves who either specialize (to put this simply) in well stealing and breaking into things, or assassins, or arcane tricksters. They get extra damage for hitting in sneaky manners aka - Sneak Attack
You could be an illusion school wizard
that sound fun. i feel like ill be terrible at it because at my awful dices. Thanks
Arcane tricksters have a couple spells but not much. In case you didn’t know
oh the dice do not make you terirble friend. even bad roles can still allow for great roleplay
ok
Do you have a group?
No
if u worry about dice, there is no class, race, etc that will help
#find-a-game is a great place to find a group
i figured
follow the easy steps to gain access to channels that u can search or a channel that u can post what u are looking for
Wow what a cool place
Try to find if there are any local groups, preferable ones that cater to beginners
Sadly there are non
im already in a irl group right now thanks thou
nice (that was more directed at elm 🙂 )
oh
howdy and ask away
how long do you all think this mission would last?
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jOrukWzt5c_ek-94ILfMb8RPJzKSu113LaNYQmJy1AM/edit?usp=sharing
because i want it to be long but not too long
im new and this is my first homebrew with a new group of players
like i want it to be like 2-3 hrs
I am not a good judge of that as I only work with campaigns that last years lol
This channel is meant more to help folks new to D&D get started with the core game rules and mechanics. Your question is more oriented for DMs and how to run a game/campaign.
I'd recommend checking with folks in #dm-discussion
That's where you can chat shop with other DMs and get feedback on DM topics
Thanks
what is the standard for ua content? do most dms usually allow it?
There is no standard other than it is not considered on par with published content in terms of general acceptance
It’s something you’d have to ask your DM if they allow it
If I were to venture a guess as to whether "most" DMs deal with UA, my gut says no. A ton of UA content isn't ready for primetime, if you know what I mean.
If I make a character on dnd beyond in a campaign with shared books can I only use the character in that campaign?
No you could potentially leave that campaign with that character. But you wouldn't be able to use the shared content in that campaign anymore. The character sheet would retain whatever it had previously and continue to function.
Okay thank you
What does "community games" mean? as in lfg community games
people can advertise their DnD Discord servers in that channel
i have my fist ever campain tomrrow (im scerd as shit)
You'll be fine!
Good luck.
Almost finished my first character
Howdy! o/

It won't matter though
sorru for the ping!
S'all good
Hi everyone, me and some friends are preparing to do our very first game.
We have:
Player's Handbook
Dungeons Master's Guide
Monster Manual
They are reading through the Player's Handbook while I'm going through all of them.
Do they just need to read that one to understand their roles? Or do they still need to read the D&D Beyond Basic Rules as well?
You don't need to read through all the books cover to cover, and your players don't need to read through the PHB
IMO if you and your players have all read through Chapters 1 and 2 from the PHB, you're pretty much good to go, everything beyond that is just looking up and referencing things
morning all!! i’m literally BRAND NEW. i started watching critical role this week and it’s my newfound obsession. i have never ever played a game nor would i know how to, but im so excited to learn !!
morning DM! already seeing this is such an amazing community

Hoe would someone go about making Satoru Gojo a playable character? Hes STUPIDLY strong and i wana play him. PLS HELP
How*
If they're "stupidly strong", you probably can't
D&D is a game that keeps things within a specific scope of balanced in order to keep things fair
i see...
1:1 translation between different media franchises tends to not go well. You can probably find build guides that provide a rough representation of Gojo, but it won’t fill the power fantasy 100% and likely won’t make a whole lotta sense unless you have a decent understanding of the rules first.
is vlakith evil in dnd like she is in baldurs gate 3
What I recommend instead is making a PC inspired by your character of interest. Read through the Free Rules, think of what class, species, and background you’d like to play and what might evoke the themes you desire. Ditto for personality traits, but that’s rules agnostic
A good question for #dnd-discussion or #dnd-lore , but generally yes. You can also check the FR wiki to deep dive into all the Vlaakiths throughout Faerun’s history:
thankss
I’m new so it’s kinda embarrassing but how do I even make a character and how in debt can I do it? Wish someone can help me
i used the site dnd beyond for mine
#learn-to-play has some resources to get started, which includes creating characters, but this channel and #character-discussion can help if you've got specific questions to ask 😎
And if a character is in debt or not is more of a plot thing, so ask a DM and they can work with you 👌
Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules goes over the character creation process:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
And if you do want to build your character on D&D Beyond, you can do that here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Or you can download a blank character sheet if you want to fill it out by hand.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Choosing a class, species, and background is a good place to start, though.
Thank you I’ve always been wanting to play but work has me far from home and no time. But I want to make time for this and make it a hobby.
Did you have a character idea in mind already?
Um I was thinking about what makes people happy and I saw bard.
Ya I like supporting
This is an older article so a few things have changed, but it’s still got some good advice.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/226-bard-101-a-beginners-guide-to-guile-and-panache
Bards benefit from high Charisma, good Dexterity and Constitution.
It's advisable to use the standard array for your first character.
Well I made a character while I was waiting for advice but idk if he’s cool or not
Feel free to share him in #character-discussion , or here if you wanted a quick check
Ye but how I do that?
I have a file besically
If you used D&DBeyond to make them there will be a share link on the character’s page. Just make sure you’ve set the sheet to public. Otherwise you can upload another file (e.g. PDF, picture) to a trusted filesharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that instead
I didn’t realize how much I need a job to help play dnd
everything is so expensive
You can play for free
The basic rules needed to play are free
Character sheets are free
Dice apps are free
That's all you need to get started
Yes, the extras cost money, but they're just that, extras
And you don't need them all
Plus often people you play with will share their books and content with you

☝️ you can find the D&D Beyond Basic Rules (free) there

Here we go
Character seems fine! I’d personally recommend bumping up your Dex a little though. Depending on what method you used to generate stats you could take some points away from Str & Int to do so.
I rolled dice
Ah I see. For newbies it’s recommended to use Standard Array or Point Buy instead. Most DMs, if they allow it, want to see rolled stats done in front of them as an anti-cheating measure.
If you’re purely practicing then it doesn’t matter. Just letting you know in case you do want to take this character into a game.
I do since tomorrow is a special day so I would like to use him
Hey I’m new to dnd, what I’m I supposed to do exactly 😅
Then I’d make sure to update the stats using either Standard Array or Point Buy. Assuming your game is tomorrow you can likely ask your DM to see what method they’d prefer you use.
Welcome! There’s a bunch of newbie resources in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play including the Free Rules. I suggest reading through the first few sections and making a practice character as you go along. Don’t feel pressured to memorize everything, but at least familiarize yourself. Once you feel ready and want to use this server to find a game there’s #find-a-game
Of course, we’re always here and happy to help answer any & all specific rules-learning questions!
Thanks I appreciate it
Yeah… I got to find a dm
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
I'm guessing this is the right chat to ask this question:
With paladins and their oaths, do they have any specific oath tenets to follow or is it more focused behind your characters backstory and what they pledge when they get the oath
Most paladin subclasses do provide an actual oath you can follow.
But you're not technically required to.
You could work with your DM to create your own oath, or just ignore it altogether.
Nice, so it's more of a guidelines which we could adjust if needed for character reasons (as long as DM agrees)?
Yes - definitely something to discuss with your dm 🙂 I find paladin more fun to play when I have tenets to keep in mind and abide by, but it is totally up to you
Agreed, it's nice to have some sort of consequence system for misusing a power given for a specific purpose (whether breaking an oath or defying the person who gave you said power)
I'm new. I recently just barely started the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle campaign.
I've also been working on my own campaign
Rule as written each subclass is a different oath, either you or your dm will determine what breaks an oath.
hallo, am new to this how do you play DND exactly? I heard its a roll playing game I wanna give it a go

Hey guys! I am new to this channel (and dnd) and didn't know how to find people who are wanting to start a campaign or one I can join. Would this be the best place to find people?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
This server is, and this channel can be if someone is willing to. You can also check #dm-discussion to join a campaign or even find someone who is willing to start one with you
Hey kamie, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Neeeew commmet
Do people play together on this server too or like I have to join a group to play?
There are no games ran in this server, but you can find some games advertised by others in the LFG channels! See #find-a-game
I joined today as a DM, eager to see who I can serve as a story teller. I already submitted by "Looking for players" post as per the instructions through Monodrone
so how exactly does one find a group who is willing to teach a person how to play at least the basics.
#find-a-game has instructions for the group looking channels
Realistically, though, you're likely going to have a hard time finding someone to teach you 1 on 1. The best way to find a group is to read the basics yourself, so that your group knows you are willing to put the effort into the hobby.
Hello hello, I have taken the mantle of DM in a group of “newbie” players and being the only one who have tried it before a little, I am planning to hit them with a fantastic oneshot of somekind, given that it is their very first time, though I don’t know which one it should be, what are your recommendations ?
This article has some free options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1943-five-inexpensive-tools-on-d-d-beyond-to-make-dming
Thank you
If none of those appeal...
- It's rarely a bad idea to start small
- Read Sly Flourish's Lazy DM advice
- Use the Five Room Dungeon model
- Make a ruling if you don't know it, look it up after the game
- Set expectations for style and safety before you start play
- Begin in the adventure, not the tavern
Howdy - I'm pretty much the greenest of greenhorns in terms of D&D - never actually played, mostly been dabbling in character ideas, already having two. Hoping I'll be able to get some help with said ideas at some point, to eventually have the chance to go at it on a campaign.
Welcome!
A lot of opportunity out there!
Hey what the. T here are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
...And I've just learned that one of my character ideas is dead in the water due to lack of certain things in the D&D Beyond Character Builder.
For reference, it was an Artificer Goblin who fights with bombs and explosives.
you don't have to use the DnD Beyond character builder! It's helpful if you own all of the materials thru the website, but is by no means a requirement if it doesn't have what you're looking for. All the stuff you need is available in the books, and honestly you can find free resources online to help you build your character. don't give up!
also this is how I started playing-- my uncle gave me a copy of the 3.5e player's handbook, and even though i didn't really know what the game was or have anyone to play with, i just started making characters i thought would be cool. I even took some of those characters I made in 3.5e and adapted them to 5e when I actually got a chance to play. Even now, when making a PC, I start with an idea for a character, write a backstory, and then do my best to fit them into the mechanics (which i'm still not super knowledgeable of without consulting books and online resources). I just love making characters!
All those things should be on D&D Beyond.
Artificers, goblins, bombs, and explosives
You’d need two or three books to put it all together, though…
Yeah, they're not available in the builder for new players, i think is what they meant
They’re not available in the free Basic Rules, no.
But a new player could purchase those books, or someone in their campaign could share it with them.
Hey everyone
Hallo, I'm very new to D&D and I want to join a campaign, or just see what it's like to play and I have looked into a little bit of stuff, but I don't know what's allowed in play or not, but from what I've seen I would like to play as a Drakewarden Ranger Subclass.
anything not allowed will be determined by your game master
Hi hi! I’m newish to dnd (played a couple games, dm’d 3), looking to get into playing or dming again after a bit of a break ☺️
the drakewarden subclass will either need you or someone in your campaign sharing to own the proper book
So how does playing DND online work?
This article covers some of the more popular methods for playing online.
?tag new online
Appreciate it
Ultimately D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together, and the internet provides a lot of flexibility for doing that.
And there’s all sorts of different tools you can use to enhance the experience.
So you and your group get a lot of freedom in choosing where and how you play.
Good to know
when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
online play is great, super convenient!
Hey
Hello!
Hi
Honestly I'm just looking for a casual fun campaign to get started in. Anyone have any leads?
Same here tbh 🙂 ive been part of 1 campaign for jsut over 2 years but i want to see waht else DnD has to offer
Hi I'm doing a one shot tomorrow for a school project and I'm looking for advice (this is my first time as a DM and I'm generally new to dnd)
#dm-discussion would be the better channel!
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
I cant seem to find any lobby ?
Well it’s not a video game.
You gotta meet people. Find the ones you’d enjoy playing with, and then set something up.
There’s plenty of games offered here in #looking-for-players.
But you’ll have to look through and see which ones interest you. Then talk to the DM, put your best foot forward, and hope you get in.
Bro thinks this is a Gang Beasts server
Hey Im new to dnd and honestly need help learning the attack process. So I know that I need to start off rolling the D20 dice and need to beat the monsters Armor Count. I’m really confused on the whole damage dice roll part.
i have a daily power card in front of me showing attack +6 and damage 2. Im not understanding the damage dice roll, the attack +6, and the damage 2 part. I thought the damage dice roll itself defines how much damage i do to a monster, but in this case theres a damage 2 section on the card so why would I even need to roll the damage dice?
How can i get started?
So, when you make an attack you roll a d20 as you already know, and add the modifier of the ability used to the result (generally strength for melee attacks and dexterity for ranged), alongside your proficiency bonus which starts at 2 at level 1 and goes up as you level up
So for example let's say you have strngth score of 16 making the modifier a +3, and you're level 1, so your proficiency bonus is +2, so you would add +5 to your attack roll and then see if you hit the enemy's AC
For damage, it depends on the weapon, or the method used for the attack, but for simplicity let's use Longsword, which has the damage die 1d8. If your attack hit, you would roll that 1d8 and add the ability modifier used in the attack (so it would be the previous +3 for Longsword if we continue that example)
I'm not sure what your card says, but as written and how I understand you would add that +6 to the attack roll and deal 2 damage on hit, but that sounds weird, so you're either misreading the card, or its some weird one and I have no idea what it is ahaha

Theres a demo of D&D that should be in #learn-to-play if you wanted to get a quick taste of the game, otherwise I suggest looking at D&D liveplays on YouTube
Could you clarify? You seem to have your class and subclass picked out, are you stuck somewhere or do you just need a character review?
Tysm
can you be in more than one campaign in dnd beyond or is it one at a time
There is no theoretical limit. There is a practical limit if you don't have a subscription, as you then have a limited amount of character slots and each of those can be in only one campaign.
okay cool thanks
i have question soo im looking to be a DM, soo do i have to imagine the map or draw/build it?
You need to be able to put together a coherent adventure and encourage appropriate gameplay. Drawing/building anything is optional.
oh okay

btw im playing with my brother so its only 2 of us soo
That's fine
While D&D is designed for 1 DM and 3-6 players, you can do less or more players.
yea i kinda want to be a player but i already made a map and a story and my 2 characters
I do recommend new DMs run a published adventure first as that can provide a good guide (depending on the adventure) on how to structure an adventure/campaign.
But feel free to add in your own tweaks and make the adventure "yours"
I do not recommend the DM also running a player character - those are called DMPCs and they can detract from the game in many cases.
This is because the DM's character can accidently start to hog the play focus, the DM's PC somehow knows how to solve all the mysteries or know where to go (DM metagaming), and other issues that leaves the other players feeling like their characters don't matter or have no player agency.
btw wanna hear my story its not too long
Feel free to share it in #dm-discussion if you're looking for feedback. Unfortunately I have other things I need to get to - but good luck on your DM adventure!
okay tyy
Hi, I’m about to dm for the first time and I’m not sure if I’ve prepared enough, my friends have also never played (I’ve played one campaign as a pc). We’re playing a starter kit, The Lost Mines of Phandelver, so it came with pre made characters. if anyone has any advice I would love to hear it
read the whole adventure at least once before starting, so you can deal with surprises better.
Watch some dm tutorial videos. Learn how to improvise (not sure how important that is in a pre-made adventure(?)).
i need a character review
level 1 nub tbh
Write down what happened after the session so you know what's taken place while it's still fresh.
"And while they're doing that what are the rest of you doing" helps to share the spotlight.
If you don't know the NPCs specific name it is perfectly fine to make it up. LMOP doesn't have that many recurring NPCs.
Same for rules, if you don't know it, do what makes sense, and say you'll confirm it for next time.
Generally you'd want to do a session 0, do character creation as a group etc. get people talking about their characters, like probing questions. What are people's "I do not want to hear you vividly describing the things you want to do to the barwench, so if it comes up we cut to a fireplace and awake the next morning"
Write initiative down somewhere so you don't forget it.
Your players will inevitably do something you couldn't have anticipated, even in a pre-made adventure. 😅
How do you improvise in a pre-made? As normal? You’d have to make sure you don’t screw up other parts of the story, right?
I haven’t really done them before, just my own campaigns.
can someone review this for me please
i dont have a group yet
uh
it got deleted too fast
Yeah that’s my bad, I started replying without seeing you shared the sheet already
I would say.... Make another ending, it mightnot be a perfect ending, but the players might like it
Thank you! I’ll make sure to read through it
Oh I didn’t think about that! I’ll definitely be doing that!
Kinda depends on the situation, but this video has some good advice.

Thank you! I will definitely do a session 0! And make sure to write things down! Thank you guys this was extremely helpful!!
Your sheet seems fine to me! Only question left is how you generated your stats; if you rolled you should switch to Point Buy or Standard Array, otherwise you’re fine
I had a feeling based off of a couple conversations with them they joked about just leaving the area and finding another city😂
i did +2 wissdom +1 charisma
or did i do +2 intellect
Not your background bonuses, your ability score generation
In that case, you could secretly just relocate everything they had yet to find.
And reskin the things they did.
Oh that’s a great idea !!
Alternatively: “Sure, you can do that. But that means we’ll have to stop the session here so I have time to prepare something else.”
Thank you! This is so helpful it’s making me excited for our game and less worried I’ll screw it up!
You leave Phandalin and head east, after three arduous weeks of travel, you arrive in Fanarin, a small mining village with a rich history.

Oh my gosh that’s awesome I can’t wait to play🙌🙌
I’m so glad I asked yall are so nice and so helpful
@wheat crystalI didnt select cantripsi t didnt give me an option
You seem to have cantrips on your sheet. If you wanted to change your picks you should head back to the spells page of the character creator
Your PDF shows six different cantrips.
i picked spells
Four from the sorcerer class, and two from the Magic Initiate feat.
Cantrips are spells.
Level 0 spells, basically.
i picked sacred flame thauma and inflict wounds
Sacred Flame and Thaumaturgy are both cantrips.
ah i see spells at page 1
it doesnt give me an option to change the cantrips for level 1
i think those are the default
@wheat crystaloh ur talking about abilities right?
Yes, your ability scores
You can change your sorcerer cantrips by going to the Spells tab and selecting Manage Spells.
i picked standard array
It might be that you don't own any books so you can't have any more cantrips
The spells from your feat can be changed by clicking on the feat.
oke ty
I know with cleric if you choose all the "and this gives you more cantrips" you end up with more than are actually available in the free rules.

So my question is I have a new races
For dnd beyond
Especially the players handbook
Do you mean homebrew races/species? We have #homebrew to disucss those
Or do you mean accessing more species/races via official books
Okay - so yeah buying books on DNDBeyond allows you to use their options with DnDBeyond's tools.
So if you buy the Players Handbook it provides all the races/species and character options from that book for use with DnDBeyond's Character Sheet tool.
Well, I got the races for free apparently
Are you in a DnDBeyond campaign that has content sharing enabled? That allows everyone in that campaign to share their content with everyone else within that campaign.

There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
Player's Handbook 2024
These are free due to these being in the basic rules
They are sourced to the Players Handbook but some things are available in the basic rules
These aren't all the PHB options since the basic rules exclude Aasimar
True
If my first character dies which is Aarakocra Ranger Hunter named ace background outlander I hope they but
Nice 👍🏻
I just had my fist ever campain
Nice
i dont know what to do know
About what, specifically?
I crave more dnd
What have you done so far?
Not much the fisf campain i just broke somome out of jail
You could always join a second campaign.
(Or third, or...)
You could check out some live plays.
You could try taking a turn as DM.
I only just started as a player 💔
From the races of 2024 players handbook which one would you recommend?
Depends on what kind of story you want to tell.
That's not a problem.
Plenty of people start as a DM first, before they've ever been a player.
Is 19 ac good for lvl 3 paladin?
Sure
Thx
How big/steep/difficult is the learning curve for DnD?
There are a lot of rules, but as the biggest game of its kind, there are also tons of resources to help people learn. It does take time, though; hard to do in, say, one day.
It's pretty big but if you need to learn simply I would recommend Don't stop thinking on yt
It's generally easier to learn by playing, especially if you've got someone experienced to guide you through it.
But if you don't already have a group lined up, learning as much as you can ahead of time can increase your odds of getting into a group.
You don't need to know everything, though. You can always ask your group or look up the rules you need when you need them.
But FWIW, this interactive demo does a good job of introducing the basics:
?tag new demo
I'd also suggest dimension 20 on drop out. Brennan Lee Mulligan is an awesome DM. In fantasy high and Dungeons and Dragqueens there is some explanation of how to play, as they play. Just watch the first seasons.
Hello I am new to DND (I just heard about it lol and it looked interesting) but I don't plan on getting the sets and figures (yet) how do you exactly play the game and can I play a test with my friends on paper?
There are some great links in the pins on this channel to get you started
you can play on paper for sure but you'll need to buy actual books and dice, or one of the cool starter boxes.
oh I'll think about it I have dices tho
I have been watching some vids about the game and I know the core basics
there are limited free use books digitally when u sign up for free on DND Beyond and then you can use them while you play in person, but that gets a little tedious
hello can someone guide me through on how to make a character and how to find people to play with?
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
I would wanna know you you got 19ac at lv 3 typically 18 ac is about average for heavy armored sheild
A magical item or two
Who boy let’s hope there isn’t a tpk around the corner haha anyways makes sense
is a oneshot game where you only have one life, no more characters?
It’s more about the adventure being only one session long to tell a complete story. Ideally your character doesn’t die partway through, but I’d gather it happens and you bring in someone else. No sense sitting around while your friends play.
OHHHHH that's makes so much more sense
Hey guys! Super quick question: I'm trying to fill out spellcasting ability, spell save dc, and spell attack bonus.
Does Spellcasting Ability have any algebra attached to it?
Nope. I don’t know if there’s algebra anywhere in the game, but maybe I’m wrong on that.
Thanks for the clarification! I'm a not smarty, so subtracting by 10 and dividing by two for ability bonuses counts as algebra for me 😂
The features you mentioned are just addition.
I meant in calculating what you add to your checks/saves.
While you're here, if you don't mind, could you tell me how to determine my spell save dc and spell attack bonus, please?
Your spell attack bonus is your spellcasting stat bonus plus your proficiency bonus. So a level 1 wizard with 16 Int (a +3) would have a +5 (the above 3+2 for proficiency). Spell save DC is 8 plus spellcasting bonus plus proficiency. So our level 1 wizard would have a DC of 13.
Thanks so much! That makes it very clear 🙏
Any way to get my entirely new player party to move faster with the campaign they keep backtracking and conversing for minutes instead of using there turn. Not sure if I’m being picky but when a single rotation with a group of 4 takes 30 minutes with nothing major or minor taking up the time it gets annoying
Give them subtle hints on what to do without being obvious or direct
My last session, my players discovered 2 locations, one of them was earlier than they was supposed to. They was supposed to go to X to learn about Y location. I gave them a subtle hint to go to X first
If they're taking too long with an NPC, you can say "I'm just a commoner, I don't know anything more than what I told you" or something along those lines
Or wait did you mean in combat?
No just In general im a player but the dm has been very visibly frustrated with them taking so much time
For example a school (jjk based dnd campaign) with about 90 feet of walking room and 2 rooms to search took us 2 sessions
If the party has learned what they needed to know or searched a whole room and it's time to move on, say (in or out of character, your choice) something like "I think we got everything we need to. Let's move onwards" and then your character moves forward so the DM can describe what happens next
Most parties will tend to follow whoever makes the first step forward
Leader les-bian larry has a good ring to it
LLL 💪
No problem 🙏
Ive never played dnd before where do i go to start or even make a character?
I was going to say the same thing lol
Dnd beyond has a character creator, you'll need a character before you can play
oh ok ill look it up now
After you make the character, you can find a game either online or in person (typically your local gamestores)
How would the online one work just curious
yeah i dont belive there is any local gamestores in my area that do dnd games but thank u!
There's virtual tabletop programs!
like a steam game?
It's always worth double checking
Like websites or apps primarily because not everyone would have access to a PC
Roll20 is a common one but you could even do something's with discord bots by linking your character sheet I believe
ok cool! thank u
Alright roll 20 is a app

Is it bad to use ai to make a image of your character
Do you think its bad to use Ai?
I’m not sure still thinking 🤔
If you think Ai is bad then its bad, if you have no issue with Ai then its not.
there are a lot of ethical problems with using AI image generators. You have to decide if you care about ethics or not
I want to play dnd as newcomer but no one lets me join
also the slop they create looks bad
That might be a thing of the past soon, some of the images I have seen recently look pretty good.
Cast a wide net, and try to learn some of the rules beforehand. A lot of people will give newcomers a chance, but a willingness to be proactive about learning the rules goes a long way.
Finding a DnD group that is reliable and you get along with is a quest you have to take on. And like with all good quests you will need to have a strong heart and a lot of patience.
What I am basically saying is that finding a good group isn't easy and might take a long time. It's something most people here have gone through.
I’m on above vtt practicing rolls etc I used my blessing of the forge to increase my ac by 1 but it didn’t go up is it on the dm to remember I get plus 1 ac
No it's on the player to track what their character is doing and what effects are on them.
The DM has to manage a bunch of other things - don't make things harder for them by forcing them to track it all.
Okay I’ll remember to make note
In DnDBeyond character sheets you can also manually adjust things like AC/HP/skills/attributes - but you'll need to remember that you did that.
Yeah I just found customise option so I can change it nice
I’m making a monk and was wondering what races suits monk the best?
After Tashas Cauldron of Everything and now the 2024 updates, pick whatever sounds fun to you.
Are there any rules to giving your character cantrips?
You only get cantrips if a feature gives you cantrips, such as Spellcasting. When a feature would feature would give you a cantrip, it will say which one(s) you get
can race give you cantrips?
Some can, such as High Elf
so if i have a homebrew race i can give it a cantrip
Maybe but it will depend if your DM lets you use a homebrew race
ok, thanks

Thank you idk how to do it but I’ll try
Anyone know of a campaign that my friends and I can join? 14-15 age
It’ll be hard since allot of gms prefer 18+ for legal reasons
Okay, then thank you.
Won’t hurt to post looking for gm or asking if it’s a 18+ game or not
Look through the games available in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
How many do u have
One of u could learn how to dm and make ur own group
3 ppl maybe more but they’re the sibling of my friend and they don’t seem to interested.
We’re just really excited to play after we sat in on a game.

If you wanted to look outside of this server here are a bunch of other places you can look for both in-person and online games:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discord servers
- TTRPG & DnD social media groups (Facebook, Reddit's r/lfg)
- TTRPG & DnD forums (roll20, DnDBeyond forums)
- Local businesses (libraries, game stores)
- School clubs (if you're a student)
Not how it works hun
Scroll up a couple of posts.
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Does anyone else gets messages from people trying to get you to buy oc art from them
Yes - typical scammer stuff. Report them to Discord (you can right-click/long-press their message and report it).
And now back to D&D
Hey I have a question. I don’t know a lot or really anything about the forgotten realms god Lathonder. I read on him a little bit on google that he’s the god of dawn and renewal. Is there anything else notable about him?
Not really he is a good aligned god a popular choice
*chooses Bahamet
Bahamet for a cleric character that is somewhat of a pacifist the dawngod sounds better
PFfffff
My character Beleaves in Bahamet while he trys to avoid violance he cant live to those lofty standards haha
I mean my character is demon but I have other reasons. For examples he’s the sun god really that is a tad bit easier to draw as a tattoo for my character than a dragon
Plus I already talked to the dm about that god so changing my backstory to a different god just isn’t something I want to do
I have a group of 8 people who are all new. Our designated DM is thinking maybe we start with two groups of 4, but we don’t know if there has been big groups before that have any input for us. We are also wondering about some websites, Discord add ons or anything to help our game and up the new player experience. Our DM would like to hear about good resources for new DM’s if possible if anyone has any tips or sources. Thank you all!
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
A group of 8 rather than 4 means everyone has to wait at least twice as long for their turns, makes it easier for a couple of louder players to dominate the DMs attention, and fights frequently become unwieldy due to the number of combatants or swingy due to the attacks involved.
TLDR: go for a smaller group.
Thank you! Very good points
Well a map building thing or website could help I’ve heard of a couple if that is what you’re looking for. I’ve played a session with 12 people before on discord. The only thing that sucks about that is the 12 turns during a fight.
Do you possibly know of a good one? If not I'll look into iy
There’s some free ones like roll 20 or the website owl bear. That’s really the only two I’ve played with.
Music bots
Inkcarnate has some solid free options for map making, Roll-20 has dungeon scribble if you like oldschool maps, Dungeon draft is paid but there are free assets. Dungeon alchimets is solid But not that good.
hey folks, quick question
if a dnd adventure doesnt mention anything about classes should i just assume it uses the basic dnd classes?
Could you specify what you mean? Not entirely clear what text you're referring to but every official adventure should be ok to run with the 12 core classes + Artificer
I'm also not super sure I understand the question. Unless you're using third party content (or homebrew) the PHB classes and Artificer are it.
so the first rpg i ever saw was homebrew and had an entire section dedicated to classes and skills, i assumed every dnd book/adventure also would have that so im left a bit confused at the ones ive looked at so far since they dont have much introduction for the classes
Most official adventures don't go over the classes
Because you're expected to use the standard classes. They would just be repeating the PHB
Ah, that would be precisely why they were listed out then.
If the classes listed were not one of the official 13, they were listed because they were homebrew/third party.
If they were the official 13, I'd imagine they were describing what being a member of that class is like in that world.
ok so thats why none of them list out the classes, thanks for the help guys!
How do you guys overcome the anxiety of looking for a group?
I'm sorta paranoid atm but I want to get into dnd again, I just don't know how to get the courage when I had a dm cancel the campaign (Tbh, I don't blame them for it) and another dm having such a vague response to a question and just ghosting.
Just think about all the fun you'll have instead. I can imagine it being a kinda scary thing to play with strangers but you're just simply having fun looking for a d&d group ykwim?
And you'll eventually build that relationship with your group and you won't feel so nervous
My issue is i dont know who to find to play with since everyone knows eachother it is hard to get to meet new people
Mine is more trusting to open a dm with someone after having a "swat threat"
yikes
Gave me my "ip address", thanks for giving it to me
people are crazy on the internet
Yeah, I am trying to say "If I check mutual server" I should be fine.
Funny enough, it was an internet "gang" member
Lesson learned, don't join servers of youtubers if they don't have security. Anyway though, thanks for the tip, I'll try it again cause I did that the first time.
Holy hell what did you get roped into? 🗿
Was in a youtuber's server who covered a "com boy"
I have no idea what that means.
Com boys are just teens who want to look cool
So, you found a game in the server of a YouTuber who was covering a toxic teenager, and you encountered toxic teenagers?
Ig so, yeah. I shoulda expected it.
Though we should take this to off topic
Oh, I wasn't putting it on you. Or at least that wasn't my intent. I just mean consider the source. It's not your fault they were awful.
I didn't see it like that, I'm just pretty harsh on myself
Nah dude, don't be. When you hunt for a game in a space with more positive energy you'll find people with more positive energy.
You're right, I do plan to be careful on who I join and even had the owner give some names on who to contact to protect myself online
I'm Richard, I've been looking for a game but I'm not in a big city so there's not many games out there
I get that struggle, anything you need help with?
I guess navigating the server. Is there a looking for group or looking for dm function here?

I just found that channel. Thank you so much
That baby emoji is sending me
It's one of my favorites
Have you guys played with anyone you liked particularly or is there someone that you felt killed the vibe on purpose?
I had one dm give vague responses, but one of them was putting so much effort before they cancelled
I might dm a homebrew. It's been a long time since I dm'd tho
I say go for it, unless you are in a time where you might be burnt out. Take your time though
I mostly avoid online gaming. I had a bad experience with a table of randos, and it made me only want to play with people I know personally, lol
I have a friend who is the same, though I wish he'd join to make things a little easier when it comes to dnd
I met a bad dm that even treat me terribly when we play in the same party on different table
I would love that, but all of my friends including myself all moved away from where we know each other lol
Yeah that happens.
Different timezones
This irl or meta?
Online, text based
Do you only dm games on here, or just discuss the game and get ideas? I just see the dm tag is why I ask
That sucks, sorry to hear that. I hope it gets better for ya
No I don't DM here. I just mainly joined this channel to shoot the breeze about a hobby/game I love. I tagged myself as a DM because that's currently my primary role.
That's not to say that I would never advertise here, I just haven't yet
Nice, I haven't played in like 5 years, I might have to shoot some ideas off you when and if I can get my ideas to form a decent story.
Well.... Atleast I also got another table that I love and enjoy being there, the DM can control the player (to share spotlight) without making the excited player feels bad
Feel free, I just can't vouch for whether my amateur responses will be any help 🤣. I've been having terrible writer's block
They are few and far between personally I started with Freeform irc in a channel called K(not using full name.) sadly online is my only method atm idk if I can run roll 20 on my tablet or somthing
Lol, usually amateur answers are the best
So, I'm pretty much completely new to dnd (I've played some BG3 and seen a few YT videos of people playing) and I feel overwhelmed on where to start 😅 I'd love any and all info for beginners if you guys have any!

Hi all,
New to DnD would love to find a campaign to sink some time in! 🙂
Hello. Always wanted to try and play DND but don't know the rules or how to start. Is there a site that can tell all the current rules to be followed?
Welcome. The Dyno Bot chat bubble above has a link to the free rules.
Hey there, my friend and I are pretty much brand new to dnd and are wanting to start a campaign. He’s gonna go ahead and try dm for us but we need players!!! Dm if you wanna join 🙂 note: this is our first attempt at a campaign so expect mistakes
#find-a-game can help you put up an advert to recruit with.
hey everyone, i'm kleotpo
G'day!
Morning Klepto
what level thief are you klepto
i'm not even a thief 🤥
So I noticed that most monsters in dnd have multiattacks, that are way stronger than the others and don't have restrictions on use as far as I know (except yk, taking an action ofc but same as the weaker attacks). Why? And why wouldnt they do those every time?
Might be a good question for #dm-discussion , but for the most part it might be that other niche attacks might be more helpful in applying a condition or controlling the battlefield, over just doing their 'main attack sequence'.
i have a quast
Worth bringing up in #dm-discussion along with what examples you're thinking of, so folk can give tips on running that creature and when/how they'd use their other abilities.
mayby a bit of a unusual one but still quast right?
the quast i have if anywone would accept it is
slay the princess and save the dragon
i sup this
Fun idea in D&D. Although if looking for folk to join you on a game you have set up, Feel free to post an ad in #looking-for-players to collect adventurers to go slay the princess.
If wanting advice on how to actually build that quest and game idea, #dm-discussion can help out.
And if just wanting to spitball ideas casually for fun games you're not really ever intending to run, but just want to chat about them, #dnd-discussion would love that.
i'm not gonne be a good game master but it's a idea i would like
I wouldn't worry too much about being 'good' at the start. Not to say that you shouldn't try, but that you shouldn't stop yourself from trying for fear of not being good enough. Anyone can DM at any experience. There's some different challenges to being a player, but a lot of fun too.
haeyyyy shshshsh im so excited to play with you guysss (need help)

If you’re starting completely fresh I’d check out the newbie resources in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play . Both include links to the Free Rules which I recommend browsing through while making a practice character to get yourself acquainted with the rules.
You might want to jump right into a group, in which case skip to the next paragraph. But I do recommend absorbing as much as you can from the Free Rules alone before you do, since the more you come in knowing the less time/effort people need to set aside to teach you at the table
Once you feel ready, if you wanted to use this server to find a game we have #find-a-game .
And of course, we’re always here to answer any newbie questions
thank youuuu
Thx
Hi
Welcome!
Good Mornin
Hi! Just a question, is there a wrong way/a right way to make a character in dnd? I'm still figuring the basics out, and I've been playing around with the DnD beyond sight. But I'm wondering if there are some "wrong" ways to make a character, or if there's some specific stuff like "you can't classify your character as x because y" etc etc..
There aren’t many wrong ways to build a character, especially if you’re following the Free Rules
I would say not wrong ways, maybe justnot ideal ways. pretty much anything is allowed
if you are using D&D Beyond pretty much if it gives you an option, then it is allowed. If you don't see it as an option, it is not lol
now pen and paper version may lead to some misuse somehow.
That being said, multiclassing is the quickest way to harm your character if you don’t know what you’re doing. There’s a lot of considerations at both a high and low level that go into the decision of if/when to multiclass. If you’re just making a level 1 character for now don’t worry about it.
Alright, thanks a lot!!
Hi, 1990s basic player here getting back into things. Have bought the young adventurer books and now all the new rule books to get started.
Has Tabaxi as a race been dropped? Notice there are in the young adventurers books but nothing in the players guide? 2024 5e books
Tabaxi are in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
While the book was technically written for 2014 5e, retrocompatibility rules that they’re compatible with 2024 until they’re republished
Thank you! I started the young players with the adventurer books and theres lots of excitement on the rarer races so I hit a panic on how to start them off etc
Are there any online content with the race details
You can purchase the book Tabaxi comes in online via D&DBeyond or a licensed 3rd-party retailer. Unfortunately you used to be able to buy species piecemeal but that feature was removed about a year ago. For something low cost I recommend checking out your local library which may have 5e books available
For the library option, if you wanted to transfer the species details onto a digital character sheet (e.g. D&DBeyond) WotC’s guidelines are to use the site’s homebrew creator to transfer over the species details for private use
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
This is ace advice thank you. Sorry was Tabaxi in the 5e players manual or you mean the extra book multiverse book?
Thank you
Tabaxi is in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Thanks, sorry I lost context there.
Nw, this section of D&DBeyond lists all currently playable official species as well as what sourcebook they’re from:
Monsters of the Multiverse has the biggest collection of races, including Tabaxi and 30+ others.
As a general guide: make the ability score you use the most the highest one, like Strength for a fighter or Intelligence for a wizard; look at your class features to see what they have to say (like what contributes to the unarmoured defence feature of a barbarian or monk), and never set Constitution lower than 10.
Any tips for a bard character?

Bard
Perform spells that inspire and heal allies or beguile foes
Invoking magic through music, dance, and verse, Bards are expert at inspiring others, soothing hurts, disheartening foes, and creating illusions. Bards believe the multiverse was spoken into existence and that remnants of its Words of Creation still resound and glimmer on every plane of existence. Bardic magic attempts to harness those words, which transcend any language.

So it's a 5e book, backwards compatible with 2024 5e, untill they make a 2024 version of that book, that correct?
To my knowledge that's not scheduled yet am I correct? I may invest via eBay.
Nice one thank you!!
There’s some recommended ability scores for bard above.
Thank you!
Yeah, they were all designed with the 2024 changes in mind, so I wouldn’t expect them to be updated any time soon. They’ll work just fine as-is.
Yes and no. All content is essentially “use the most updated version.” That can be on a book-by-book basis (i.e. the core 3), but doesn’t have to be. For example, MPMM updates and consolidates races from multiple other sourcebooks.
But even then it’s just a strong recommendation. Your Tabaxi isn’t going to blow up if you use the old one from Volo’s Guide to Monsters in your 2024 campaign. Some stuff may have to be updated to make it fully 2024 compatible, such as the move of species ability scores to your background.
So am I have to read all of the classes? it's really hard to memorize everything and I want to be a DM my bravery and faith about the break
no need to memorize anything at the level
what do you exactly suggest sir/madam/they?
Not really, and you don’t have to memorize everything right out the gate. You might want to be familiar with the classes your players are playing, but in-depth understanding can be done at a level by level basis as your players level up
you work with your players and familirize yourself of what is being played by them. understand the basic rules, etc
In addition, it should be the players responsibility to know their class features.
I have been DMing for 35+ years and have not memorized everything about anything.
thank you so much
thank you!
No shame in keeping the rules on hand to look up as you go either.
just understand the basics and know where too look things up. and if u play on D&D beyond, it is so easy to click on anything to get an explanation for everything
In fact, an good DM skill to learn is being able to make a snap judgement when you don’t know a rule, then follow-up after session by looking up the rule
the only problem I have about PHB English is not my mother tongue so while reading it sometimes it's hard to understand.
Is a translation not available in your language?
I've to follow this path I guess I can be better by that way
Unfortunantely there is no turkish translation of PHB third rate country problems
Fair enough. Thankfully and hopefully #dnd-newcomers and #dnd-rules exist to help answer any confusing bits
Thank you so much all you're so kind and friendly
You’re welcome!
Greetings! I just joined the server and navigated myself through the rules. Consider me as a complete newcomer to the whole D&D business haha
I'm familiar with roleplaying on several servers though, so this thematic peaked my interest as well. Are there any hints you could kindly give me in order to start off? Is there some kind of character creation template I can use? Thank you for reading and your help :)

I dont know if this is a right channel but where can I find dnd 2024 character sheet with scripts already installed.
Scripts
Some character sheets call addition of spells, races, classes, items and so on for scripts so you can browse those things in your sheet instead of doing everything manually.
You can generate characters on dndbeyond using the basic rules
For everyone who started like before a week how are u doing?

lol. well that means it past noon though, just a lot past it lol
Yeps as of now it's 1am in my country
Cool
Any newbees here. I never played DND before but I am interested to learn and the mechanics of the game
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Cool, maybe I'll find something here and maybe find a game as a start
Same
Yeah, and also I've been hooked to DND ever since I watched Dimension 20 fantasy high and I told myself yeah why not, right?
I was hooked when a friend introduced it to me in the 5th grade. That was 35+ years ago lol
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask a question?
Best place. Ask away.
Ask away
The new true strike spell, I thought it just adds 1d6 radiant damage at level 5.. but in my D&D Beyond character sheet, it adds 1d6+4 radiant. I'm wondering where that +4 damage came from
The +4 may be your stat modifier
Since you still get to add that to your weapon damage
It is indeed +4, but doesn't this mean my stat modifier gets added twice?
No, true strike replaces the default ability modifer with your spell ability modifier.
no it replaces the +x for the weapon. X = strength or Dex depending on the weapon and how you were using it
Oh gotcha, now I understand what its doing.
If D&D Beyond is adding the +4 twice, that's an error
Its confusing to say the least
indeed I can see the confusion
Yeah it still isn't quite right..
So normally I use dex (+4 modifier) for my rapier attack, so the damage is 1d8+4. With true strike, it is supposed to use my int (+4 modifier as well), but because I am level 5+ the damage should be 1d8+1d6+4. But there does not seem to be a way to roll that. The rapier's default damage button is still rolling 1d8+4, and true strike's button just rolls 1d6+4.
You could see if #ddb-support has any suggestions
I'll do that, thank you.
There is also a dice roller on that page, as a stopgap solution.
DDB can only automate so much.
There's a workaround. Roll the weapon damage like normal, then roll a d6.
That would end up using your STR or DEX for the attack.
They are the same here. the other work around is roll what the spell offers then roll the die from the weapon
If you want to use your spellcasting ability, you’d roll the spell like normal, then manually roll your weapon’s damage dice.
Thankfully, they are both +4 right now so I can avoid that issue
You can add custom actions to your dndbeyond characters
I feel like I might need to add a homebrew weapon jsut for it all to roll properly
Hello guys, i'm new to DnD we have started an adventure with my group of friends with a starter pack (adventure level 1-3). And because my group isn't always available we are looking for a solo adventure with a friend for 2 players (so one GM and one player). Do you have any suggestions where we can find a pre-made adventure ? Maybe it's not a good idea for beginners, honestly we're just looking to have fun with my friend
This site has some good recommendations for playing with just two people:
https://dndduet.com/
cheers i appreciate it
is there anyone i can hop into a call with to help me with making a character
Although it never hurts to ask, it will be a rare happening for someone to willingly hop into a call to help make a character. It is time consuming and a lot of it heavily depends on what your DM allows and party needs. If you have a group already, I'd get with that DM. If you don't have a group, I suggest you follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for. I wish you much luck in finding help.

- background
Fill in ability scores with the standard array, then apply modifiers as granted. Pick proficiencies, equipment, spells if applicable. It's all in the Free Rules.

I’ve never been in a campaign so I’m still new to this fr, how would you find one?
wdym by fill in scores with the standard array? and applying modifiers. can i just throw them wheverever i want?
like what does it all mean
There’s three main methods for assigning ability scores, described below.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Standard Array uses a fixed set of numbers: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8.
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
You assign those to your six different abilities in whichever order you prefer.
Cool thank you
Different classes benefit by prioritizing different abilities.
A druid, for example, might use the suggested standard array assignment shown here:
?tag new druid
Druid

Druids belong to ancient orders that call on the forces of nature. Harnessing the magic of animals, plants, and the four elements, Druids heal, transform into animals, and wield elemental destruction.

Hey im starting to read the rules and i would like to join a game more a week or so,i was Thinking about my schedule and i was wandreing how long is a Is session usually?
sessions can vary wildly. If i had to say 2-3 hours would be "normal" they could be less but maybe more frequent
My son used to play for 10-14 hours every saturday, but that is pretty extreme
Ok cool thx
Wow cool
I have 7 hour sessions like once or twice a month with one group. Weekly 2 hour sessions with another
it can vary wildly
Ah i see so 2 hours is mostly what i can do,is that Decent or it will be hard to find a game like that?
Once two times a week
2 hours is one the short end of things
Ok thx
many DMs and groups will want to have longer games
From what I’ve seen, most campaigns run from 1:30-2:00 once a week. It shouldn’t be hard to find an online campaign like that. Offline campaigns normally want to meet for longer, like 2-3 hours a week
Ya i get that 2 hours isnt much
Oh ok good i guess
long story short. TONS od variety available lol
I was thinking to enter a one shot to start easy
Also i can be more flexable with thees
Hello! I have a small question regarding the Blood Hunter homebrew class made by Matt Mercer. Is it truly as underpowered as people say? Is there any way to make it viable? I'd hate to be halfway into a campaign and realize that I'm equivalent to a plastic fork. Thanks!
its not the mechanically strongest and its a bit janky, but its not unplayably bad or anything
I have a player that uses it and is so far (from lvl 2 - 4) has been the best frontliner in the party
Awesome! aslong as theyre not ROTUNDLY bad thats great! thanks!
Also, do you guys have any homebrew classes that you enjoy using/seeing? Im making a google doc with my group incase any of them wanna use it on future characters.
Averages is about 2-3 hours normally
if you want high quality homebrew, look for Llaserlama's stuff https://www.gmbinder.com/profile/laserllama
My game normally starts at 2pm-5pm est we are just getting to the end and we started near the end of Feb (losts mines)
Maybe ask about in #homebrew , I'm sure they'll have some opinions.

Hey! so, i wasnt able to get into any sessions yet (been loking for abt 1 1/2 years now) so i just wanted to try out some other programms and stuff for like map building or just create some charackters.
Does anyone know some programms for map building and some other stuff? I kinda wnat to get to know those.
#dnd-maps would be the channel to check out for that.
Isnt that channel to share maps?
It's the channel for everything D&D maps. Check the pinned message in #dnd-maps for useful tools and resources for making D&D maps.
Pinned posts there have useful info.
Hi I'm new got some charger ideas that I think would be fun to play with lol
Hi everyone
New to D&D and wanted to start a quest online. I see there's channels for community -lfg- but do ppl use table top sim on here or something else? When I start something with someone would they be willing to help me create a character?
people use various programs/apps, it would depend on your group. We don't run games here but offer those channels to connect groups. Some groups use Discord to play, some TTS, Roll20, owlbear rodeo or foundry.. As long as you stick to level 1 and the commonly available classes/species you could create a character sheet as practice and we can help with questions you have
Tabletop Simulator isn’t the most common tool for playing D&D online, but there are groups who use it.
Ultimately what tools a group uses is up to that group.
okay cool. And if I wanted to join a group now I just use the bot command and wait for a response correct?
it would be looking for players?
hi, I am Johnny, I am new to DND, I litterally just bought the Starter Kit today for Dragons of Stormwreak Isle, Starter kit,
That’s where dms post looking for players so you can respond to any open threads
you would want looking for DM because you are a playing wanting a DM
If you want to join as a player, you can post in #looking-for-dm, or you can respond to DM’s posts in #looking-for-players.
(You’ll probably have more success with the latter.)
Inkarnate, dungeon draft and dungeon alchemist are a few programs.
Nice choice! Welcome!
There are more players than DMs sadly haha
DMs really get their pick of the litter.
So responding to DMs is more likely to get you into a game than waiting for DMs to respond to you.
I just nabbed icewind peaks my self not new… well I’m new as in less than a year lol good starting point
It was the only version my Walmart had. and it came with a set of dice, once I get more knowledge of the D&D I will probably personalize my dice set, but at least the game came with a set of dice
And the rules as well, there are premade sheets as well. Like I said good starting off point
Now the starter kit only came with 6 characters sheets if I need more where would I get more

how does character creation work
What do you mean? Your question is broad
just in general like the basics
Usually a good way to go about it is to take a character sheet and fill out every section of it
Imo
And then double check with your DM you did it correctly
Look at the player's handbook, pick out the class, race, etc you like most out of it.
If you don't have one, there are many online sources with the correct materials as well, including DnD Beyond.
ok thank you
Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules goes over the steps in detail:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
But you can start by picking a class, species, and background.
You can create your character digitally on sites like D&D Beyond:

ok thank you
Or download a blank character sheet to fill out by hand:

me and my friend are looking to join an online dnd campaign I've played a little just with friends but he hasn't played at all, how do I find a campaign for us?
Here on the server we have channels specific for group finding. Check the #find-a-game for details.
What does background do?
In the broadest terms, it gives you more game features and gold, representing the past of your character.
Details depend on whether you're using the 2014 or 2024 version of the rules. For the latter, here's a link to the basic rules:

Guys I have a question: I started thinking abt the spells I should choose for lv1, (im a wizard) but in the spellbook part it says that for write a spell down u need to pay GP, does it count for lv1 spells and/or the 2 spells u learn levelling, or only for the one u find in the world?
You get a certain amount of spells at first level (usually 6) and when leveling up (usually 2). Those you can add for free. The cost and scribing time is when you find a spell in the world during play.
Thanks bro

So how do I figure out strength dexterity constitution etc

The above methods are the most commonly used, but I'd recommend the Standard Array method if you don't have a DM yet!
And is treasure loot they've picked up
Stuff they find during the game, yeah.
At the beginning, you’ll just have the starting equipment listed in your class and background.
What about the saving throws those are decided by the class right ? Or is it something else
Yep, class. Each class gets two saving throw proficiencies.
If you mean more generally, saving throws are based on ability scores. So even without proficiency, a high dexterity score already means you're better at dexterity saving throws.
Ok
Thank you so does their dexterity score go into the saving throw or do they need to reroll to decide
If it's a dexterity saving throw, the dexterity modifier gets added to the d20 roll.
Check here for an overview on saving throws:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SavingThrows
dex mod is a flat bonus added to the save. if their proficient(gained by being certain classes) they also have a level based bonus starting at 2

Random question I know a lot of people use artificers to make guns but would they also be able to make an electric guitar for a bard
Not according to the rules, but whether a DM allows it or not is another story.
too much work on phone tbh
And how would I be able to calculate the saving throws I'm confused with that except the fact different classes have different proficiencies in them
You add the associated stat bonus to each saving throw (so for example you'd add your Strength bonus to your Strength saving throw). You also add your proficiency bonus to whatever saving throws you're proficient in according to your class.
If you're confused about how find out the bonuses, this might help:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
That whole page explains a major chunk of how the game works.

You can find the rules for mounted combat here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#MountedCombat
#character-discussion could probably help you come up with a few strategies for it.
What about passive wisdom I'm not sure about that
A passive score is just 10 + whatever you'd normally add for that roll.
So in this case: 10 + your Wisdom modifier.
And skills are determined by what exactly ?
A lot of times, ability checks may get skill bonuses added depending on circumstance. For example, if your character wants to identify a plant, you'd likely make an Intelligence (Nature) check, where proficiency in the Nature skill grants you a bonus on that check.
Each skill is associated with a particular ability, like Strength (Athletics).
So you'd add your modifier for that ability.
If you have a +3 STR, you'd have +3 for Athletics.
Then for any skill where you have proficiency, you'd also add your proficiency bonus.
That's another +2 for a level 1 character.
So if you were also proficient in Athletics, you'd have a total of +5 (from your +3 STR and your +2 PB).
Whats pb
Proficiency Bonus
Proficiency bonus.
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
Thank you
So how do you figure out speed and armor class
Your speed is determined by what species you choose to play as, though some classes and other features can give you a bonus to it.
Your armor class is determined by what armor you wear
Speed is based on your species and modified by things like class and magic items
Armor class is generally determined by your armor, and modified by dexterity in some cases. Other features such as those from your class or species can give you different ways of calculating it
So if my character didn't have armor what class would that be
It'd be 10+the character's Dex modifier.
monks and barbarians notably can have high ac without armor with their special features
Whats my dex modifier I can't seem to find it
Do you have your ability scores for Strength, Dexterity, etc.?
Yes
So what is the character's Dex score?
14
So that's a +2.
And what about hit points
Bard lvl 1 +1
Each class has a specific die for their HP. A bard's is a d8. Each class gets their maximum HP at level 1. So a bard with a +1 CON would have 9 HP.
What about a rogue
A rogue also has a d8 hit die. Assuming the same level and same CON bonus, the result is the same.
So what dice does a rogue use for their health
A d8, as I said above.
Do your cantrip take up spell slots
Nope, you do have a limited number of cantrips, but you can cast them as many times as you like.
And bardic inspiration counts as a spell right?
No, that's a class feature. It doesn't require spell slots, but has a separate limit.
Ok what's the limit
An amount of times equal to your charisma modifier per long rest.
You can see the rules for it on the bard page: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1BardicInspiration
What about leather armor how much does that offer in protection
Your AC will be 11 + your Dex modifier.
You can see a list of the armors and how much their AC bonus is here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#ArmorTable
What about hit dice and temporary hit points I'm confused on those
Your hit dice determine your max HP.
Hi
The size of the die depends on your class, and the number of dice depends on your level.
Each time you level up, you get a new hit die. You roll that die, add your Constitution modifier, and increase your max HP by that amount.
You can also spend hit dice during a short rest to regain HP.
And you regain spent hit dice after a long rest.
Sorry can someone help me manage my sheet as I’m a bit lost
So lvl 1 players would have zero hit dice and how big is a hit dice d4 d6 d8 d10 d12 or d20
And what's the size of a hit die
It will tell you based on the class you pick
How much of the Free Rules & Bard class page have you read Parzival?
What do you need help with on your sheet?
Not a lot or I tend to over look things so I really appreciate you guys willing to help me out
It’s alright
In any case the Bard class page at the very top lists your hit die:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Bard
It’ll be 1d8 per Bard level. So at 1st level you’d have 1 d8 hit die
On 1 I think you always get the max?
Correct. You always take the maximum value when calculating your max HP at level 1.
Every level after you can roll or you can take the average
What do proficiencies mean in saving throws
It means you add your proficiency bonus to the roll
Ok thank you is it the same with the weapons proficiencies
Yes.
What does it mean if your character has knowledge of an armor
If you wear armor you're not proficient in, you suffer bad penalties.
Iirc, disadvantage on all Str and Dex d20 tests, and you can't cast spells.
Nice now does anyone have any idea what the circles under the boxes are
Which circles under which boxes?
Under the strength dexterity constitution and other ones there seems to be a small oval on the character sheet
Since each ability has both a score and a modifier, you can put one in the square and the other in the circle.
This character has an Intelligence score of 16, which means they have an intelligence modifier of +3.

Hey tobias, the links the Bot just put out are a great start. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Am i supposed to have a character mapped out before i join a game?
Not necessarily. Many DMs will help you build one, BUT it also helps to "play around" and build 1 or 2 if you don't have a DM to help start understanding the game
High, new here! New to DND with a basic understanding, essentially whats needed to play the neverwinter video gamez so not much. Im looking for help starting out and a campaign that will welcome my very strange self.

I should double check when I copy and paste my own messages that I change the name to the one who asked lol
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters you’d enjoy. Then once you’ve found a group, you can work together to pick the best fit for that campaign and add any finishing touches.
The Neverwinter games, if you mean Neverwinter nights, are a vague 3e or 2e system I believe
I say vague because it's not a super accurate ttrpg creation

Welcome! There’s plenty of groups online you can play with.
Helloo, Are there any games that are based on knowledge? I'm still pretty new and I really don’t want to bother experienced players with what might be dumb questions xd. Is there a way to play with others who are also just starting out?
Also, English isn’t my first language...while I can express myself, I know there are probably some technical terms I haven’t learned yet. So yeah, I just don’t want to be a burden to anyone.
Hello! 👋 I'm new to d&d. I am looking to learn more about it and find people to discuss it with and maybe play 😄
What bard college do you think yearns for the improvement of others?
What's it like to main a druid
Play one and find out
Are you asking what druids do?
Yes
Can u tell me what ur exp is like
I'm assuming druid is like a support offensive
Primarily 2 things
- Cast nature-themed spells that involve controlling plants and animals, and summoning them
- Use their ability Wild Shape to transform into animals or perform other magical actions such as summoning a fire spirit or becoming a sparkling figure composed of stars
To simplify, Druid utilizes Wild Shape and nature-based magic.
Wild Shape is a somewhat complex feature that allows you you transform into various Beasts to interact with the environment (Rodents, Bears, or Dogs).
The Nature Magic more directly changes the battlefield, where other spellcasters tend to have one-and-done effects.
D&D doesn't pivot on role-based concepts. Pretty much any class can fulfil any concept of role through the decisions you make when building them
I'm assuming this is excluding the rule of cool
Given the "rule of cool" depends entirely on the DM allowing (or not allowing it), there's no reason I'd assume it
Hmm
Also "rule of cool" generally refers to bending the rules in interesting ways in interesting or dramatic situations. It's not really often applied to sweeping changes to how core aspects of the game work such as classes
DND is highly customizable, subclasses completely shift the direction of a class to a player's preferences.
So would they use environmental hazards and the like over direct damage
Ah I was just wondering cause they said terrain
Hmm more directly changes the battlefield
yes, there are spells and abilities that let druids cause the ground to become difficult terrain, or rocks to rise up and damage enemies or move the earth
However, that's just one option for Druids
Oh ok so like an elementalist almost
Again. please do not ping me
Really sorry will try not to im future
Slendy u were gonna say something,?
Nah, it left me.
Druids just have easier access to spells that directly interact with the player's environment. The emphasis being on animals and plants.
