That's why I only get ideas from it. Not actual game mechanics.
I get ideas for plots and such. Also character stories and designs.
I can see what you mean though. Especially with being able to change the difficulty lol
Bg3 is a better lead into D&D over critical roll in my opinion. They are paid actors to put on a show giving a false expectations to new comers
It displays a pretty good amount of lore and adds in important characters such as Jaheira, the Flaming Fist, the war between Gith and Mind Flayers.
I just like how much Larian Studios put in it lmao
They are? I dont think I have heard that particular criticism before TBH.
mechanically, monsters and PCs in Critical role are pretty normal
as for the "paid actor" part. sure, roleplaying and acting as their characters comes natural to them, and they are aware of the camera, but its still them reacting to what Matt does and to their dice rolls as any other players would
Actually the cast are mostly voice actors including mat himself either way I never listened to jntk cr just watched the Amazon series
Huff
Heh, hello! <=)
Just a question, people. In order to make a D&D Beyond Verdan Character sheet, buying the book is the only way to do so? I'm saving to buy my first rulebook, so I really don't want to buy the proper book for that one single species, but I love the concept.
Hi guys! New to D&D. Just about to make my first ever charatcer, so may ask questions!
They took away the ability to purchase character options piecemeal, unfortunately. You either need to buy the full book digitally on D&D Beyond, or buy it somewhere else and transcribe it into D&D Beyond using the homebrew creator.
(And setting it to private. You don't want to publish paid content for free.)
Yeah, feel free to ask questions here and in #dnd-rules
You can also check out #learn-to-play , it's got lots of great links.
Awesome! So is D&D actually HAVE to be in person, or is there also ways to play online?
lots play online but the in person experience is better in my opinion
Fair. Is all of it linked in #learn-to-play ?
that will teach you the basics then you have #looking-for-players if ya want a game set up by the DM or #looking-for-dm if ya want to post yourself and have a dm pick you up for thier game
Fair! And how does it actually work? Is the website to make the game start or? Sorry, so new to this lol.
hahaha no need to apologise, we all tend to help as many new people as possible here.
how it works varies depending on the DMs preference, but basics are discord for voice and then something like the dndbeyond app for character sheets and dices rolls and then there are a few other option people use for maps etc
Fair! Would the DM link it all to me?
yeah so if yo go to the looking for player section they will generally state exactly what they will be using in regards to all of that, but yeah if you get accepted to a game then the dm will definitly give you all of the relevant information if you ask them
Awesome! Anyway, I need to read this how to play channel now 😄
feel free to come back if ya have any questions
Thanks! I'm currently on some sort of beginner website rn? Before the storm
So is my HP like my health?
yeah
Alright. Sorry, I'm gonna keep asking questions prolly 😭
yeah thats fine. not all of this is easy to figure out by yaself
No, its really not hehe! I have a question actually.
The 6 abillites?
Thanks to bg3 is why I got more interested in it
there are 6 main stats yeah they tie into everything you will do, like say you wanna steal something from someone dexterity will allow you a better stealth and sleight of hand check with your d20 dice
Newbie here. 🙋🏽♀️
What does Dex help with? Just doing actions much more better/precise?
It’s kinda like reflexes and how swiftly you can do things like pickpocketing
Ahh ok
Hey where can I find a campaign?
I'm just learning about the game atm, then i will 😄
once you make a character you will see on the sheet what each of the six scores works alongside
Awesome, okay. I just finished the DNDBEFORETHESTORM. I sang a tune with my friends at the tavern, Became a stoaway on a rival's shhip, whatever that means, and clobbered a pirate with a sail 🤣
a stow away is a a person who has snuck onto and hid on a ship who doesnt belong there
Ah, fair enough. Well, I was saving that ship 😂 the guy I hit into the water was a “thief” 😆
where can i find groups to play with? i have just about 0 experience in dnd but ive been interested in the game so i kinda know how it works

do you get ABILITY points everytime you level up? or is it just ability improvement only
That's ability improvement only
Though there are some very high level ability point increase features too, like the barbarians level 20 feature.
ah...
thanks
I was filling out my character sheet, a monk lvl 16 as i’m joining midway and my friend sent me these pages with the class features and it’s a lot and i just wanna know do i squeeze all of that in features and traits? I’m just not sure how to fill that out in the best way.
sorry if my question is stupid
fill in a way that YOU can know which is which, and make sure so that you still know what stuff it does
so it depends alot on you
Not stupid at all, that's a common problem, especially at high levels. I'd take an entire separate empty sheet and add your features there.
One other way you can do it is just use the feature name and add the page number, so you can quickly look it up if you need it.
OKAY thank you two, I’ll try my best.
On DnD Beyond it will automatically add everything you need for your Monk
But you have to pick the one you want
Hey guys I’m just a bit confused by the dnd beyond website, can you play online games there? Ik there’s a website that allows that something20? But I forgot. Anyways dyu guys know where I can play online games?
#learn-to-play may have some info
Thank you
Hey. Completely new to this and just played the example of DnD Beyond. What are the rules when filling in the character sheet and do I do that before finding a community? Seems a bit overwhelming at first but appreciate your help!

complete noob who came back again
Morning robin
Can we play in dnd beyond or is it just a place to get the books/digital copy and make character sheet? Cuz im sure we all dont have dices. Me and my friends are from all around SEA so we cant meet. So I wonder if dnd beyond is also a platform to play dnd?
It is absolutely a place you can play. The only thing it doesn’t have is a voice/video aspect but Discord works perfect for that.

Bunch of resources right here ☝️
well I have made a character, I Just need to learn the gamr
Good think bullets one and two of that message are "What is D&D" and "How does it work", as well as including links to the free rules and an introductory video
Robin the best way is to find a group and start playing. If you haven't already, go to #find-a-game and follow the super easy steps to be able to find a group or post what you are looking for in a group. Going to be honest, you'll have more luck if you are willing to pay but that isnt the only way
sorry for pinging mate
Not a problem, but I would also ask you don't call me "mate" if that's okay
A creature gets advantage on hit roll against a prone target right? What if the target uses silvery barbs on the creature hit roll, does the creature reroll with advantage?
No, they simply reroll the d20 as is, and must keep the lower roll of the two
Oh aight, ty!
Also minor clarification just in case, only melee attacks get advantage against prone targets, while ranged attacks have disadvantage against them
The melee attacks include spells too right like inflict wounds
Yep, as long as its a melee attack (a spells too will specify whether it is ranged or melee)
TYSM for the clarification
I want to start playing but if I'm honest I got the opportunity to play once last year spent most of my night making my character and then the dm dropped out and everyone else followed soon after. I'm a complete noob and have technically never played a campaign am I in the right place if I want to play?
RSK indeed. Follow the simple instructions in #find-a-game to find groups or post what you are looking for
I'm new to the server too, but I've heard many tales of people finding groups in here.
Just don't be discouraged from finding a group and playing because other people are dropping out and getting cold feet or realizing it is not for them. Some people are lucky to get a great group with many years of laughter, tears, and everything in between, while others have to have several groups disbanded before they find their match 😄
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
You’re in one of them! This server doesn’t host games itself, but the group-finding tool here can be found in #find-a-game
If you wanted to maximize your chances of finding a group it’s best to cast your net wide. There are many more avenues, such as:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discords
- Other TTRPG & DnD social media groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)
- TTRPG & DnD forums (e.g. roll20, D&DBeyond forums)
- Local game stores & libraries
thank you peeps wish me luck 😬😬😬
Best of look!
u got this!!!!
Daft as it will sound anyone able to help me get into dnd?
Brad, check the links in the pin on this channel for some info. If you are ready to find a group, Follow the simple instructions in #find-a-game to find groups or post what you are looking for
I don't what what sorta character to make
I would also check out #learn-to-play which has a link to the Free Rules
As for what sorta character, what kind of characters are you naturally drawn to?
I like warlock but I want to be able to use meele aswell
I don't just want to be spell casting
Luckily, there are many casting classes that get melee options, either inherent in their kit or included as part of one of their subclasses
Including Warlock, of which theirs is called Hexblade
Warlock could potentially do that, yes
#character-discussion would be a great place to talk about character ideas

Hi all,
Fairly new to D&D, managed to get a friend and two of his work contacts to get a party together, that inevitably put me in the DM role. We ran DOSI, I made mistakes, they made mistakes, but the learning is all part of the fun.
Decided to write a custom campaign to help me get to grips with all the intricacies of D&D, I've just about finished chapter 1 in detail and have the rest bullet pointed. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.
Hello everyone kinda new here so... Where i can find a group to play?
Through the #find-a-game which will give some info for groups
Also #looking-for-players is a good start as well
Well i looking for a DM to teach me how to play
There's also the #learn-to-play channel which gives a bunch of info
Thank !
Yeah no problem!
Hello
howdy
Ello
Howdy there
Afterno Red
Hello! 🩷
Heyo
Anyone who needs help I'm going to be hosting a dnd campgin and it is very begnier friendly
meeeeeeee
is it free?
So, I made a character with a random magic item I found. The well of many worlds. My dm is setting up a campaign (level based) and I'm wondering if it could be used for a puzzle
me and my friend @little ivy are trying to figure out how to play
Visting the channel #learn-to-play has some great info to help you
thanks 🙏
No problem
Make sure to use #find-a-game to organize a game. Soliciting games outside of the appropriate channels is unfortunately against server rules
Has your DM approved you starting with a magic item?
In any case there’s a near infinite amount of possibilities for a puzzle in game with just as many solutions. As such, the only person that can answer if the Well can be helpful in your DM’s puzzles is your DM
yo @little ivy whats up
Yes. He said we could all have a magic item of our choice from the basic rules
Hey guys im new im wondering where to start
Thx
Hello Hello. i am new here can someone tell me how can i send a request for "looking for a DM" Channel. Thanks👍
I know @lost silo is but it's paid

hei together, i just made my first dnd character using dndbeyond. I love how it turned out backstory wise but am not sure if lines up with the characters spells, actions etc. Would anyone mind taking a look perhaps? is this the right channel to ask? Thanks in advance ~ https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/145187134
hello! im joining an irl campaign in about a week, i just finished completing my dndbeyond character sheet, but i ran into a problem. i was gonna show my friend what my character sheet, and he askedsubclass i chose, but when i went to go look at it, i only had one option and he told me that there were supposed to be alot more. why do i only have life domain available? (i am completely new to everything dnd.) here is my character sheet https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/144981774
Dnd beyond doesn’t let others see the backstory section of character sheets.
Though to get the most freedom with character creation, you can keep how abilities work mechanically but change how they look visually to suit your needs. This refers to a saying the community has, “flavor is free.”
Wether or not a backstory lines up well is going to be dependent on the campaign. For that you’ll have to talk to your DM.
ohh i didnt know that, sadge :c Thanks for the info though, apprechiate it!
You only have access to one subclass per class because you don’t own the online PHB or any of other the supplementary books.
oh thats a shame. so would i have to talk to my gm about accomodations?
Yes. Even better if your group has a session zero before diving into the campaign itself.
Just keep in mind that if no one in your group owns the subscription tier that enables content sharing and also owns any of the supplemental content, you’ll all will just have to make do with the free basic rules.
Best approach is to talk to your entire group about setting up access to resources over solely going to GM.
never played D&D before but have been thinking about giving it a try. through discord or something of that nature. no nothing about it, anyone have any tips to what i should do before trying to start?

just seen the learn to play section, sorry about that
hey shatter
Once you look through that great info, and are ready to join a group, IMHO the best way to learn is to play lol, check out #find-a-game and follow the easy steps to be able to look for groups or even post for exactly what you are looking for.
Start with playing a one shot. A single adventure designed to be completed in a 2-4 hour session.
These have the lowest barriers for entry and provide a great way to learn as you play.
i will look into that, thank you very much!
yer very welcome
You can find one shots hosted at local libraries, game shops, and online. I personally recommend Adventures League. Which you can learn about over at #adventurers-league
Awesome, thanks for the information!
Okay i will most definetly do that, thank you!
new to D&D, will experienced players be happy with someone who has never played before to start a campaign with them?
i would say you will find a HIGH percentage of folks have no issue with a new person. most enjoy teaching newcomers to the AWESOME game lol
i just started a campaign of 3 brand newbies as a 35+ years veteran DM and my 4th player has played for over 20. we are all stoked to see where it goes 😄
I've played for about 5 years so I some what know what I'm doing when I head into these things lol
I love newbies, personally. They come up with wild, interesting stuff because they come to the game with fewer preconceptions.
hey I am completely new to D&D and are just wondering about creating a character. do you do it before or after starting a game, should you talk to your DM about it and if it is ok to make a character before even joining a session.
you generally create a character FOR a game, since you need to know what the DM wants, but there is no harm in doing character building as practise, and maybe adapt a character to a game if it fits
ok thank you
Omegon is spot on. And if you are lucky a DM may take what you make. I have made dozens and dozens of characters just because it is fun lol
I really enjoy DnD but I don’t like creating new characters that much personally so I just play with the characters that I have created
Creating characters is probably my favourite part
Unless the DM asks you to create a new character
me too but not on DnD beyond
I hate DnD beyond
WHy?
It’s much easier to create a character with DnD Beyond than the old fashioned way by using the player’s handbook
But back in the day that’s all we had
Yeah that is why I enjoy using Beyond cuz I find it easier to use instead of doing it the old fashion way
DnD beyond softlocks you out of so much or its paywalled and I am brokesies
I have my gripes with D&D beyond too
Yeah that sucks
I wish they would bring back buying character options individually
I agree but this ain’t the place for that. Then again if you join a game and it’s on beyond. You should have access to what the dm has
I will always prefer my hardcopy
Tbh, I'd never have seen probably the best magic item ever without beyond. But it only works for campaigns with a set amount of planes.
@grand pollen i seen u said u were looking for some same with ur friend i can help u
yes i want to learn to play
Hey just a gentle reminder that this isn’t the channel to solicit or organize games. Please use #find-a-game to use this server to advertise, organize, or otherwise request games!
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play as well as this channels pins. Both have a bunch of newbie resources including a link to the Free Rules :)
to be completely honest I'm not making a full campaign and im just talking to people about it
You’ve stated you’re doing a short campaign, by server rules that would fall under organizing a game
Let me know if I can help you in anyway.
Indeed, sarcasm is not needed, especially in a newbie channel
is text an acceptable way to play/are there games of dnd that primarily coordinate via text? i'm pretty anxious and not very good with acting or on-the-fly improvization so i'd like to ease my way into that kinda stuff if possible x_x
Those kinds of games are known as Play-By-Post (PBP), while they’re rarer than a traditional format game they’re not super hard to find
i see i see, so there's a dedicated format and space for it then? that's good to know
i'd love to do live rp style games at some point but i'd enjoy something a little more slow paced for an introduction
You might also like what’re called “One-Shots” - short, self-contained, single session games that can be great for newbies to get into the hobby with low investment
Now I can’t comment on how common one-shot PBPs are, but I expect if you search around for a bit you’d find one
yeah, that's what i plan to look for
do you usually take your own characters into a one-shot or is there a predetermined sheet you're assigned? i know there's some format where it's common to just have a sheet people can use for the session but i forget what it was
Depends on the game. Usually you make your own
For learning, better to make it with the DM or even the group so everyone can ask questions.
It can be either. I find it more common to make your own, but newbie specific ones may offer pre-gens.
Either way, the game you apply to should make it clear how you should prepare your character
i thought making a character for the game with the dm was just common practice generally?
It is common practice indeed
or at least with the dm as a consult
On various levels as well. Some DMs will allow you to bring in a character you’ve already made, some will want to make it with you, some will have you make it with the whole group.
It is. Most games do not have prewritten characters. Moreover, many players do not want to play in such games. Doesn’t mean they can’t be fun though
I love some premade character dnd podcasts like Girls who dont dnd. They were the one that made me wanna start dnd
Proof that such games can be fun and inspiring. I personally would not be opposed to join such a game some time in the future
Hey for example the starter campaigns like the stormwreck isles, can we divert from the character sheets that were provided and let the players have their own characters made for that story or is it best to have them use the sheets provided and work around it to create your character?
Depends on your DM.
Premade characters mainly exist to allow a table (especially a new one) begin play with as little prep work as possible.
I will be dming it and itll be all our first time playing and my first time dming
Ah okay! Maybe its best for us to use the premades then ^^
Thanks for the info!
Lol my edit screwed up. Glad I could help
Hahaha no problem! I hope i can be a good dm!
Hello sorry to interrupt but I kinda new here so can someone help me?. Thank you
Of course! What do you need help with?
character creation.
i was thinking of a dragon born alchemist like my avatar but i really new and had no idea at all
Hey everyone! I found dnd a few days ago and very interested in playing. I am a husband and father so my schedule is all over the place at times. Any tips or recommendations on how to find one-shot games? I have heard of roll20 but not sure if there’s a better alternative.
You might want to go to #looking-for-players
ok
the bad news is that i kinda... don't have any friend.
Totally fine to start out. Keep in mind Artificer isn’t part of the core classes, so the Free Rules won’t include them. You’ll have to get access to Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything or Eberron: Rising from the Last War in order to play it
Hi I’m like completely new to dnd nd I wanna learn how to play ive only ever played one rushed game so how would I start?
That is not for you
I’d be just wait, advertising games outside the appropriate channels is unfortunately against server rules
ok
Is it considered the same?
Wait ok I am confused so some classes are locked behind some purchases? Or do certain campaigns that allow tashas couldron of everything or eberon? Cant free rules allow it for the sake of funsies?
how do i get access to it?
just to avoid confusion :b
Welcome! Both #learn-to-play and this channel’s pins have links to the Free rules. I’d recommend browsing through them whole making a practice character as you go along. Of course we’re here to answer any specific newbie questions!
Just asking is there other class that inlcude using a firearms or it's just artificer?
You have a few options:
- Purchase one of the books Artificer comes from. Of the two, I recommend TCE
- Have a DM or group willing to share their book with you. On official or licensed character hosting sites there will be various processes to do so.
- Access the book without paying by using a legal source such as your local library. If you’d like to transfer the info to an online sheet it can be as simple as copying over the info
Artificers getting firearm proficiency is DM dependent. That being said firearms are considered martial weapons so any class that gets martial proficiency gets firearm proficiency. The only wrench is the availability of guns in your DM’s game
2024 rules? Yes there are, other classes can also uses firearms, and there are also homebrew classes.
Oh right is game master rule dependent too. In my game I allow it since they are innaccurate.
Only gunpowder or musket allowed.
Artificer is the only official class locked behind a purchase. There’s some history behind why it isn’t a core class, but it boils down to Artificer originating from a specific setting of D&D and only later being ported be more general for other settings.
so that means ranger has access from bow to a gun like a flintflock?
Not that they have access to one, just that they have proficiency in them if they exist in the DM’s setting
Meaning if Game Master ruled that fire arm exists yes they can use it.
Duly noted! Oh yeah as for items(weapons or trinkets) right, is there like a list of items available or is it free for the dm to create. Or for example character specific items that players create through their creative imagination, should we as a dm allow it and balance the item to the worlds setting or follow what items is in dnd?
Im completley new to dnd can anyone help me out create a charactor n stuff
For sure you can stream it in my dm
Or in other vc channel
Welcome! Have you taken a peek at the Free Rules yet?
Dont think so
There are specific items, and quite a lot of them. Any starting equipment characters have or gained along the campaign will be detailed in the items section of the Free Rules or other sourcebook if need be (e.g. DMG).
As a DM you are of course ok to customize items to your liking, though I suggest sticking to Rules as Written as close as possible for your first time playing.
The rules and item options tend to be comprehensive and consequently broad in some descriptions. For example, not every weapon on Earth is in D&D. To work around this, a popular thing to do is “reflavoring”, which is changing the narrative description of something without changing the mechanics. For example, a Katana isn’t in the game, but is commonly implemented as a reflavored longsword.
@pallid shadow @finite nest I would check out this channels pins as well as #learn-to-play for a bunch of newbie resources including a link to the Free Rules. Welcome! This channels pins and #learn-to-play both have a link to the Free Rules! If you’re already familiar with the process of character creation the first chapter only the Free Rules covers everything else from combat to skill checks
I have already read that so what next?
I’d recommend a DM screen, a starter adventure, and some snacks :)
I dont have anybody to start an adventure with

Final question sorry to bother, what small token or cards should I create for the DM board?
Tbh, whatever you have trouble remembering and want to see easily
There's no one right answer for that, though conditions at least are often included on the official ones
Hi all, I need some help, guidance, pointers, anything really.
I have bullet points for the story from beginning to how i ended up in the campaign, but I don't know how or if I should include every little detail. Or just send my DM the bullet points. Can anyone weigh in with your opinions and recommendations? All are welcomed.
Sorry, for my characters background
Hey everyone,
I just got into dnd and I would love to try and play in person is there a way to find a group or something I do live in key west FL so like kinda way outta the way but I’m open to driving
I like to see a Three Sentence Backstory: where are you from, how you got your class, and what drives you to adventure. It's enough to paint a picture of your character without getting bogged down. Your DM may vary.
Check out game and hobby stores, libraries, Facebook groups and the like.
@wild onyx I dig that. Easy and to the point. Thank you Mr Smith
Barbarians aren't born barbarians?
Might be, might not. My Nyra was a happy little wood elf until a cult abducted her and did a Winter Soldier. Now she uses a secret word to give her speed, strength and ruthlessness in battle.
Perhaps your barbarian is a religious zealot, or somehow cursed, or suffered a head injury in their past.
Maybe they're just born angry.
Yeah.
Classes are game abstractions that don't necessarily have a societal meaning in-world. A Barbarian is not a Barbarian because they were born to some nomadic tribe in the wilderness.
So what makes a barbarian a barbarian is anger, tis all?
What makes a character a capital B Barbarian is their class features.
Ah, okay. I looked it up and it said barbs are born barbs
@wide flame what do you mean?
Generally speaking anything that's not given as rules is open to reinterpretation. We call this "flavour". You can think of the rules as packets of mechanics that say how you do things with the dice, and describe them differently.
I mean that your character is a Barbarian because you wanted to roll up a barbarian character, lol. Your character is what you make them.
One of my characters I've kept in my back pocket is a barbarian with the Noble background. He's the second son of his aristocrat family, so wouldn't have received a meaningful title. And he decided to seek his fame in pugilism and heroics instead of book learning, philanthropy or public policy
I could have easily made him a fighter and gotten a similar result. But I liked the idea of what the mechanics bring to the character's presentation. I took the opportunity to play against type.
@wide flame so I'm new and my dm helped me make a rock gnome barbarian. But I have no idea where barbs come from, I googled it and it said they were born barbs 😭
So I might have messed up the backstory a bit
Ah well there's some flavor involved. It's sometimes setting specific.
Some Barbarians' powers are magical in nature. Where they get that power has a lot of wiggle room.
It's not any one origin, usually.
You can run it that way if you want, there's no rule against it. "Tribe of fur-wearing warriors in the wilds" may be a stereotype, but it's a totally valid way to get a barbarian.
.so you really can be anything in dnd
Mostly, yeah. As long as the DM allows and it makes sense in the setting.
(and obviously within the bounds of the rules)
@wide flame @wild onyx thank you guys! I appreciate it and y'all! Makes me more confident!
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do I get kicked by a DM if I go into a game with just a character sheet and zero knowledge of the game?
Can't say it super helps your chances, but if you've put your own character together you should have some idea how things work.
As I always say: the table doesn't need you to know all the rules. But you should know enough to know how your character works.
I mean, depends entirely on context
If the game is mentioned to be beginner friendly, or you mentioned being new, it would be really weird for the DM to immediately kick you out for no reason
If you join a game and it comes as a surpise you have literally zero knowledge of the game (Which also makes me question if your sheet is accurate), a DM might understandably be a bit miffed
I'm new can someone help me understand the game

Hey, im a new DM and i'm looking for some player's cheat sheet and also level up and maybe character creation guide for my new players, they told me they want some help to be more autonomous and don't ask me every minutes what they can do.
I find something interesting on armorclass (this is not an ad, but you can go on their site to see what i mean by player's cheat sheet etc...) it looks very cool but i don't want to spend too much money for this, can someone help me to find an alternative way ? Or maybe someone an experienced dungeon master would help/give me some document.
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are some here but there is a minor mistake with the help action wording
Fix your cheat sheet wotc lol
Wow, thank you so much for your help, do you know if there is some french version of it ? English is not their native language and i don't know if they will all understand the cheat sheet

Hello my friend and I are about to try Dungeons & Dragons for the very first time. We’re both really looking forward to it, but also feeling a bit out of our depth. I believe you have some experience with the game, and I was wondering if you might be willing to help us get our bearing, maybe offer some beginner advice or point us in the right direction? No pressure at all, of course, but we’d truly appreciate any guidance you could share. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome! The best place to start is with the Free Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
okay thanks, i noticed there are more species in the paid version than the free version. Why is it like that?
Maybe player options require purchasing in order to use. Think of the free version as the demo of the Player's Handbook.
How do I make a thread in looking for DM?

I have had several folks join me through that ☺️
Aighr thanks brother just abit worried about holding everybody back I'm not exactly the smartest man alive and I play all the bra8n dead classes like paladin barb etc and I'm like super anti social so my social skills are buns Xd
Hi everybody, I'm new to d&d and was fooling around with the d&d beyond character creator for a bit to get a feel for the mechanics and process of creating a character. But i noticed it said "No Subclass". I cant really figure out how to add one tho. I read that there is some sort of draconic subclass, but how do i work with those in d&d beyond?
Assuming you're using the 2024 rules, you'll need to be at level 3. Try that!
Note that with the free rules each class only has one subclass. For the others, you'd need access to the Player's Handbook.
Alright, thanks for the help
Agreed with above. Every class unlocks a subclass at level 3. If you're still just poking around at level 1 characters, I wouldn't worry about it.
Do you have to chose a subclass at lvl 3, or is it optional?
You do have to choose a subclass.
k
So many groups are caring and friendly. I have dm’ed tons of folks with EVERY BACKGROUND and love helping
A subclass is like a specialization. For example, Fighter gets Champion, which is a subclass that helps increase their odds of critically hitting, and improves their athletic capability

No, go to #find-a-game and read the instructions there
Ohhh thanks
Hey guys should I get the phb and if so, as a complete beginner 2014 or 2024. Also I can just get dice from anywhere right? Idk if these are stupid question lmao but lmk thank you!
Get the 2024 phb if you’re rest to play. Dice from anywhere for sure. I like shopping local tho so if there’s a shop nearby, hit em up
Cool good to know thank you
Oh another question, is there a starting race I should probably chose or class I should probably chose? Just to make it easier to understand. I think when I do want to join a game I’ve heard it’s best to maybe ask a DM for help on ur character but I’m thinking I should maybe go over the basics myself first
Race/species doesn't change terribly much in terms of complexity.
As for class, martials are mostly the easiest to wrap your head around. Fighter is generally the simplest, then followed closely by barbarian and rogue. Not necessarily in that order (it depends somewhat on your subclass/build)
If you're looking for the simplest options, the simplest classes are Fighter, Barbarian, Monk, and Rogue.
The races tend to not complicate things too much. I agree with the others on classes
Casters require more study because you have to choose spells and manage spell slots and other features. They just require more bookkeeping (if you'll forgive the pun).
Howdy folks nice to join yah 😁

hello
Hi everyone, just got back into D&D after not playing since 2ed.
We're a few sessions in now and one of the things the DM has said is that we should ask more questions. We are all new players. Are there some good standard questions we should be asking NPCs?
how do i join a group? sorry im new here
hi! im pretty new to dnd. ive followed a couple campains and such but ive never really been in one. im looking forward to hopefully finding a party that introduce me to the world of dnd

Depends on the topic

You use the bot commands to create a post in the specified LFG channel
The bot commands start with /looking-for then select what kind of LFG post you want to create.
The bot will give you a form to fill out.
After filling it out and submitting it, the bot will create a post in the specified channel and attach a thread to it.
Use the thread to provide any updates/corrections or discuss possible games/organize games with interested folks.
You can also review #looking-for-players and direct message the poster or use the thread to indicate interest.
What kind of questions do y6ou have? You may also want to check #channel-guide to find a specific channel for the type of D&D topic you want to discuss.
seeing as how everyone is gonna be new I'd assume most question would have to deal with the DM how he should handle certain situations for example earlier my during the creation of character one of them wanted to be an astral elf and the other didnt agree because in the newer version of the book he said it was deemed "unfit" as the DM I said we should just compromise and maybe nerf or change abilities to fit the story
he was very stubborn and didnt want him to be the race for whatever reason partially because none of us have credibility to kinda lead the group
The group should identify what kind of D&D game they'll be running and what that means as far as allowed rules/items and not allowed rules/items.
I will say that restricting options can help with ensuring the game meets a certain gameplay vibe that the group wants versus allowing everything.
Does that make sense? Don't restrict just because - restrict because it will lead to a more fun game.
Ok thank you for the help this helped a lot.
What kind of things have you said to the NPCs you've met so far? (This is an interesting question that I don't think better fits another channel, but if a mod thinks otherwise, I'm happy to move the discussion there.)
This is fine for now
yeah dont just ask questions to the NPCs but ask questions about surroundings, what you can see/smell investigate a few more nooks and crannys ask about the items worn by people that seem like they may be important to the storyline etc etc
DM me i can solve all your issues :>

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
And check out #dm-discussion
My general suggestions are:
- Focus on fun. We play games to have fun.
2). Set expectations and boundaries and enforce them. Like what's appropriate player behavior, what topics are okay and what's not, and how the group will handle disagreements. - You don't have to know everything - make rulings in the moment to keep the game flowing but don't be afraid to pause the game to look a rule up if needed. But also be consistent. You can also go back after the game to discuss things and tell the group how you'd rule it going forward.
- And again focus on having fun. If you and your group are not having fun, stop the game and review why it's not fun. Reset expectations and boundaries if needed. Sometimes you may need to kick problematic players. But remember the overall goal is for everyone to have fun together.

Welcome newbies! If you haven’t already, this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play both have a bunch of newbie resources including a link to the Free Rules. I recommend flipping through them first to get familiar with them; making a practice character along the way can be a great help. While it is possible to get into a game with 0 experience beforehand, it takes a lot of work off of the DM and fellow players if you at least know some stuff heading in
Once you feel ready and want to use this server to find a group, I’d check out #find-a-game
I have a question
Shoot!
I would wait until you get a response. If they don’t answer in a specified timeframe you might want to send a follow-up message but I would only do so once.
Give them 3 days to a week to respond but I’d suggest keep looking for other games/groups.
Yeah Stars advice is great as well
They were looking for players to day
And I responded at 6
And again at 8
And still no response
And it says there online
Organizing a game and coordinating schedules takes time.
D&D is not like a video game that you just drop into
Mmh well they said in the description for the party it will be on
Some games can take months to organize
Saturdays at 5pm PST
Thx that help a bit
You might try checking out other D&D servers advertising in #looking-for-community as there may be more immediate/pickup D&D games there.
Hi everyone 👋 I'm Drago. I'm a new-ish player. I'm glad I found this server. I look forward to getting to know people and hopefully finding a group to play with.
Welcome Drago!
Thanks!
Just picked up a D&D Essentials Kit and spent the last few days building my character. Was curious if anyone with some experience could take a look at it to make sure im not missing anything major before I start looking for campaigns. I’m also as new to discord as dnd so I apologize in advance if should ask this somewhere else!
If you made on D&DBeyond you can post the share link here or in #character-discussion . Otherwise if it’s on PDF or an image you can upload it to a trusted filesharing site (e.g. Google Drive) and send the share link to that instead
Everything seems alright except for your stats
As a Sorcerer Charisma should be your highest stat
Yeah. if you're going to be a sorcerer, I would recommend having your Charisma be way higher than 12
Strength will be nearly useless for you. (barring certain multiclass builds, which you also can't access with your Cha that low)
So that’s where some Of my confusion comes in..does class choice automatically effect character background?
the idea of my character is he’s a big strong dopey mountain dwarf who discovers his sorcery abilities. People generally like him because of his demeanor (charisma) but his years in the mines have made him strong and durable.
-# (Not to mention that multiclassing isn't really beginner friendly to begin with)
Class choice has no impact on character background, and vice versa
I’m assuming the goal at that point would be to explain why chosen stats don’t match up with stats typically chosen through back story?
Typically used*
hello
Doesn’t have to. You usually build stats to be effective over to match a certain backstory. This is a bit above being a newbie topic, but your actual stats are independent of how you roleplay your character. They’re purely mechanical and only impact the narrative where you decide
Yeah. You're gonna find yourself not contributing much when your bonus for spell attacks sits at a very low +3
If you want to be an uncharismatic sorcerer, keep your Charisma score high to be an effective sorcerer. To RP being uncharismatic simply be gruff, choose Intimidation over Persuasion, avoid taking proficiency in social skills, avoid doing Charisma-based skill checks, etc.
is anyone interested in having a new player in their a campaign?????
If you’d like to use this server to find a group, check #find-a-game !
This will generally apply to any sort of “stat mismatch” you want. If years in the mines has made him less sociable, quiet, etc, those qualities can/should come out in RP
Ok ok I think I’m getting now
It was my initial understanding everything character building wise had to “match up” as closely as possible with the background I created and any mix matching could throw a campaign off track
Not at all! Campaigns going off the rails so to speak are more often due to either DM unpreparedness or players choosing not to follow the main premise of the campaign
That isn’t to say a DM has to be prepared for everything nor that players can’t get sidetracked, it’s just the extreme conclusion to both is derailment
I have so much unfounded anxiety about screwing up a game due to being so new 😅
Everyone starts somewhere! It’s ok to be nervous, but I promise a good game is super fun
Greatly appreciate the help!
Highly doubt this’ll be the last time I pop in with questions lol
i m new to D&D
and I want to join a room were people is playing it
I just want to Hear.
can I do that here?
There are game finding channels, but games are not played here
And as for "spectating" a game, that's not something that commonly happens. Instead you could try checking out what's called "Live Play" on youtube or twitch; where people play D&D and stream or record it for others to watch
Some of the big names in Live Play (sometimes also called Actual Play) include:
- Critical Role
- Dimension20
- Penny Arcade
- The Adventure Zone
- Dungeons of Drakkenheim
So we have asked some questions about them, this is a homebrew campaign, but I think there are things we could be asking now that will help us later that we are missing because we're all new to it and probably have no idea of how much detail there is behind each NPC. Example - made it to a local town and there was a notice board that had some quests on, we decided on the gather some things for the temple one. Went to meet the priest, found out his name and what he wanted the plants for but didn't really delve into him in more detail. So on reflection, he wasn't really a priest, he was more academic, he was making potions, he wasn't from the local area, where was he actually from? how did he end up there? I think we'll get better at it, a bit like RPing in character, but just checking there aren't obvious starters we can use.
It's not a bad idea to know who you're working for. Ask around at the nearest tavern, maybe folk there can tell you about them.
i wanted to ask a question about an old character of mine, i used to play it in an old campaign but we couldn't go past lvl 3 before the campaign fizzled away, i really wanted to play the character but i never got the chance to do so and im looking for a new campaign to play with and im not sure if im allowed to use the same character just at lvl 1 or is that considered taboo in dnd, my dnd experience is limited to 2 campaign both of which didnt last long because the dm got busy and just watching critical role and some dimension 20
Generally speaking it's expected that you bring a "new" character to a new campaign. D&D campaigns generally dont' exist in shared worlds, and DMs typically want character that fit the world they exist in
As such, bringing in a character you've already made without knowing about the world will cause some degree of friction. Bringing in a character who has already been used in a campaign and you want to preserve that history will cause more friction
I would think many DMs would be ok if you bring in an old character if the levels are about the same as those in the game or the level it is starting at but, with the caveat to the player is, it may not feel or play the same as it do in the other group. With a different setting and different group, you may be disappointed, or pleasantly surprised lol
I think it's best to assume most DMs won't allow a character with a background in an different campaign than will
I guess we shall agree to disagree
New game, new players, who's going to know? Just keep an eye out for details of the setting to make sure your old guy fits in the new world.
Agreed mr smith

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

I'm not aware of any go-to list of such questions, but I think you can use any of the 5 W's (plus How) as follow-up.
For example: "I want you to get some plants for me." "What sort of plants are they? What do they look like? What properties do they have? Where can we find them? Why do you need them?"
Obviously not every NPC will volunteer all information, but those can be a start. And as Mr Smith said, you can ask elsewhere. It's tricky to know as a player what the DM has prepared specifically, so if you find you're hitting a wall, that may be a sign it's time to move on.

Why not share your idea in #character-discussion ?
Can anyone help me complete a character sheet ?
I'd ask what you need help with in particular and I'm sure people will answer any question you may have.

I think you might have a hard time finding someone to do that for you.
We can certainly help you here if you have any specific questions, but good luck if the only way you can progress is through voice chat.
Ive been trying to find someone for days...
Sounds like you might need to lower your expectations. Have you read the free rules yet?
Yeah but I don't know how to work them
Build a character:
- class
- species
- background
Fill in ability scores with the standard array, then apply modifiers as granted. Pick proficiencies, equipment, spells if applicable. It's all in the Free Rules.

right so i made a character in dnd beyond, where can i find a game?
my friend said this one helps, but idk https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/category/starter-set?pid=SRC-00094
if ur wodering
Try before you buy. The Free Rules are free and have everything you need to get started.
After that, a typical first purchase is the Player's Handbook.

hello! i want to play dnd but i dont know where to start. ive created a character sheet using online websites, gone through the players handbook (kinda), i feel like i need to be part of a campaign to get a grasp of how the games work. i've been watching critical role for a while now, but ive never been a theatre kid or anything like that. i want to host a game with my friends but we're all new to dnd. i dont know of any DMs, is there any resources available for me to be part of a one shot/campaign or something as a new player?

And the website is also very confusing..
Could be any reason from web extensions, VPN, Ad Blockers, or an unsupported browser (assuming you mean DnDBeyond). Hop down to #ddb-support and maybe provide more info about your setup.
It says character incomplete
But i don't know what I did not complete..
Then that means you’re missing a step in the character creation process. You can edit the character and start at step 1 and make sure all the required fields are filled in.
Then walk through each step and confirm you’ve completed each step.
But for further support, post in #ddb-support

Hello, I’m brand new to d&d, I have a character backstory but don’t know how to properly go about creating the character on D&D beyond or honestly how to get in a campaign. I live in a town that doesn’t have any games going at least not publicly from what I can tell so my own chance would be to find a virtual game to join in. But first things first I’d like to pitch my character idea to someone willing to hear it that is well informed enough to bounce ideas off of so that my character isn’t a burden to bring into an adventure

Hey I'm wondering if I can have stuff like a split personalitys because it's crucial to my characters lore
Best to run that by your DM and group as it may not fit well with the kind of D&D game they want to play.
But it is possible (but more likely to happen if the mechanics of your character don't change but just how you roleplay the character).
Oh ok is there something that uses elemental magic?
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.

I finally figured out how to summon this thing.
I summon you, Shenron!
I'm afraid that reference flew over my head.
Shenron is the magical wish granting dragon from Dragon Ball Z franchise, the iconic manga and anime series by the late great Akira Toriyama that set the foundation for many current manga and anime in the Shonen genre.
Damn, didn't expect to even get a lesson on DBZ lore.
I've watched it but never memorized that guy's name before. Not really a fan.

hi!
Check out #find-a-game for instructions on doing so if you're looking for a game, though if you're new #learn-to-play also has some useful info to get started
i know little about dnd (will read up on it) but my go to species for any game with dnd roles is tiefling
It's a great race 😌
That’s what my character is right now
tiefling for minecraft origins or baldurs gate
Flavoring it as he looks almost human, but as gives up his oath of paladin and takes more warlock levels his fiendish characteristics come out more nubs turn to horns
oo yum
Oddly enough my first BG3 player was also a tiefling lol
i went for cleric tiefling if i remember correctly
smth about tieflings draw me in
i have arrived
Hey yall
hi
does critical hit works on flame tongue fire damage?
Yes. When you score a critical hit, you double the amount of dice rolled, including add-on damage like smites, Sneak Attack, Flame Tongue, etc.

Hello! Can I get help with making my first character?
Sure! Are you starting from scratch or have a specific question?
Hello! I’m new to d&d and I really want to be DM. And I’m thinking about buying the Core Rulebook collection. Are there any big differences between the editions of the books?
DM me
Each edition can be pretty different from each other. The current edition is 5th edition and there's 2014 and 2024 materials.
I'd suggest going with the 2024 materials as that's the direction where the game is going and it's pretty new-user friendly.
Try before you buy, the Free Rules are free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
They're now the D&D Beyond Basic Rules (you'll see even the URL has changed)
Worth mentioning because now if someone goes looking for the "Free Rules" they won't find anything
Okay question. Let's say I'm looking for 2-3 players but they require prior knowledge about what it's based on. Does that make me community? And if so should I phrase it differently from the others? (I feel like there's a common answer for this but I feel dense)
You would be a DM looking for players (so use the bot command to post in #looking-for-players which would be /looking-for then select the players option)
Noted thank you
Ok so my players (friends) really want to make their own character in the Starter set that I got just for me to get used to dming... (Dragon of Stormwreck Isle) I think its a mini campaign till level 4. For those who have done this campaign can I ask for a little guidance about this?
Guidance about what specifically? Helping your player make a character?
The rules do cover that as a step-by-step process, is there something specifically that's vexing you/your player?
Id say one of my friend wants to have a durge character and I dont know if that will make the story divert a lot or is that okay to add ? She really likes durge
I don't know what "durge" means, that's not something in the D&D rules at least
Dark urge? Its something in baldurs gate 3
Okay, that's not something I'm familiar with and not something that really applies to D&D the TTRPG
How much or little a character can/will divert the story is a conversation you have with your players, when you set expectations
Ahhh hmmu okay noted, in terms of classes, the only class that you cant use unless purchased would be artificer or is there any other classes that are locked in some way?
Correct, artificer is the only class not part of the Basic Rules
Ok duly noted!
Tbh i feel like im the only excited person, the rest seems to be off that I wanted to do with the base characters that are provided.... So thats why I am asking wether or not making their own character for a mini campaign that was premade ok or not... And will it be hard on me as a dm that has 0 experience in playing or running a campaign.
Look at the basic rules and get them to make a lvl 1 character but stick to the basics if you are all new
Ah, so I see!
Hello everyone! I'm new to dnd and I'm currently trying to understand how to play it, through watching dnd players on YT and dnd beyond, and I'm interested in being a Player then a DM. I still don't understand it well so I'm looking for some advice from anyone, feel free to help me out even if its just a little, and in advance.

There are other places to search, though: Reddit, most VTTs have forums, Facebook, and more.
man im new to dnd and having hard time finding a fitting game
Thank you Mitcho, I'll go check it out right away
Maybe your parameters are too narrow? Plus, you can always look elsewhere besides this server.
just need any game that welcomes newcomers
Not everyone who's open to new players advertises themselves as such, so you can always ask. Also, there's the DnD Newbie Sessions server you might wanna check out.
oh could u dm me a link?
Just use Google. You'll find it.
oh top search got it thx
Guys does someone know if it is allowed to give your character a crazy op starter weapon, but with a drawback like it can only be used once and gives you a permanent debuff or is this generally something you cannot do?
Haha, it's D&D. If everyone is good with it, it's allowed!
In my personal experience, I find giving a really powerful magic item (even with a 1/day limitation etc.) either goes really well or really poorly. Like using this item can probably bypass an entire combat encounter or make it trivial... which maybe is fun but it can also be boring.
Generally you as a player don't give anything to your character, that's down to your DM to do
Would a spellcaster know the differences between spells?
Like in the sense of level
They might, that's what the Arcana skill is for
So like knowing magehand is a cantrip and fireball is a level 3
Sorry
Your DM would decide based on context of your character and the situation
So like my rogue is someone who works as a white hat thief
They use magic as a way to supplement this
Ok ik how my rogue got access to magic
Being hired to wizard towers and magic schools
Hey I dont know if this is the spot but I’m looking to find a solid group to play together.

Hello, i am creating a character for my first campaign, could anyone help me with the creation? i have most of the stuff figured in my mind
What sort of help are you looking for specifically?
i just dont know the basics that much, need help to navigate through the chacter sheet, alredy got class, race, name and backstory stuff
You've gone through this process? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
ugh, didnt realize there were a lot i did not do, no i did not do choose most of this
We're here if you get stuck anywhere!
my character has a demon arm which he uses for spells and stuff, can he use a two handed weapon?
What feature is granting you this demon arm?
he forced a hell wizard to fix his dismembered arm and it was a demon arm
No, I mean like what in-game rule has allowed your player to have a demon arm that acts like a magic focus?
i have no clue, i decided he would get one in his backstory but don't really know if he can or not, new to this stuff so idk how stuff works
it seemed cool yk
It's a classic misunderstanding of DnD that the game is free-form roleplay where your character can be anything or do anything, but in reality there's a framework of rules which dictate what your character can and can't do.
is there a way i can make him have one?
For example, if someone makes a character with a backstory that says "he gets a pair of wings from a deal with an angel"... that doesn't mean he can fly.
He needs to have something from one of his features (maybe his class, or his species) that allows him to fly. He can't just fly because he 'said he has wings '.
makes sense yea
As for a demon arm that acts as a spellcasting focus... well, there's not many things in game which allow you to have a built in magical focus. Part of balancing combat and spellcasting is the need to have a free hand to hold a focus.
he is a knight at core, he survived everything with his sword and had years of training
So: can you have a demon arm? Sure! But can it grant you any benefits that a normal character wouldn't have access to? Prrrrrrobably not.
so magic is not really his main thing, but more like a side tool that he tries taking advantage of
i found a subclass i think called eldritch knight, maybe that could be how?
You can say his magic comes from his demon arm, but in reality your magic will probably come from your class, feats, or species.
So you can pick Fighter as your class, eventually pick Eldritch Knight as your subclass, and describe how your character gains that magic as through the demon arm
yeah that sounds good
But you'll still have to follow all the normal rules for spellcasting, demon arm or not
oh ill check this
Haha, DnD is a set of rules, after all. Though to be fair, spellcasting is one of the more complicated parts of the game
so a fighter cant use spells?
i am just finding out about that yes 🥶
Not by default, no. They have to gain something that allows them to cast spells. For example, the Magic Initiate feat, or the Eldritch Knight subclass.
oh okay so eldritch knight it is, he still needs a spell scroll?
Spell scrolls aren't necessary to cast spells. They're a different item entirely.
I assume you're talking about a spell focus. Which yes, you will probably need.
hmm, so how else can he get spells, it mentions spell scrolls in the link you sent but i couldn't see anything else
You'll gain spells automatically when you hit level 3 and pick the Eldritch Knight subclass, and gain more spells every time you level up after that.
The rules for how that works is in the Eldritch Knight subclass description.
so my DM said all characters will start level 3, i think that fixes it kinda?
If that's the case then yeah. You'll start off as an Eldritch Knight to begin with.
Though I should warn you that starting at level 3 is going to be a little more confusing for a new player than a level 1 character
so it also says on the link my character must have training with any armor he is wearing to cast spells he is wearing, how can i make him achieve that
he set that rule, he will have to help with any complications 😌
On the bright side, the Fighter class has training with all armor types! So you're already set
The demon arm is a good way to explain the abilities that your Eldritch Knight subclass gives you. The arm doesn't grant you anything that another Eldritch Knight player doesn't has access to.
oh great, so the backstory works with the way my character works, couldn't want it any other way
It's what is usually referred to as "flavor". Flavor is how you describe abilities, but it doesn't change how those abilities work.
yeaah i like that
so i will have to choose a spell too considering he will start at level 3
There's a few spells you'll have to pick. The list of how many spells you get choose, and which types you get to choose are in the Eldritch Knight subclass rules description.
thanks a ton, i also could not see eldritch knight in here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#FighterSubclass but i guess it is an official thing
To access options that only appear in paid-for books on D&D Beyond, you need to buy the book on D&D Beyond
That's why you can't see Eldritch Knight, it's not in the Basic Rules (the free rules)
i will try to figure the rest out and ask for help with any basic rules related stuff
Do verbal components have to be spoken specifically? Or can they be general mouth noises?
They have to be audible, but they don't have to be specific words
They're arcane utterances
Bc I wanted prestidigi sparks to be a finger snap and a noise
Because my rogue would use them as distraction

Nope. They offer more options and content, but you can get plenty of play out of just the free material.
My character just hit level 2, and I was going through the online character sheet. Reading through the rules, it looks like I gain Expertise on one of my proficiencies. Is there a place somewhere on the character sheet where I select my Expertise?
On the Class tab in the character editor on D&D Beyond, you should be able to choose which skill gets Expertise.
If you're using pen and paper, you can just fill the bubble with an E to denote expertise.
Thanks
After creating my character what do I do?

Everything you need to know is contained in the Free Rules listed above
Most important for a new player is understanding ability checks, how combat works, and what your character's abilities are
Ok ty
is there a site/codex with all race data and stats? I wanna make a character based on a another game and see if there is something that already exists that’s similar or alike and if not just make something new!
DnD Beyond has a list of all the species, but most species require you to purchase the books that they were printed in to view.
The free species are listed above.
I saw that, but I don’t wanna purchase any books right at the moment. I mainly wondered if there was a free listing of existing races just to see if it existed or not and where in the books to find it once I do buy
I'm not sure where you can go to find a list of the names of all the species that are available, to be honest. If you have a specific idea in mind, we can recommend similar species that are available here.
For example, if you say "cat person", I can easily recommend the species Tabaxi.
Tortle is the species for you, then. They can't wear armor, but they have a shell which grants them massive default Armor Class, and they can hold their breath more than the usual creature.
Awesome thank you so much! Is there anything else about them that’s unique or any kind of lore you know of? I’ll be looking into myself here later but might as well ask
They can use their claws to deal damage similar to a weapon, they have extra proficiencies in natural skills, and they can retreat into their shell to reduce damage (though this one isn't as helpful as you want it to be in most cases
)
Awesome! I’m making my first (official) character. I’ve never played table top* D&D before and i’ve always thought it to be neat and I’ve been in this server for awhile, but I’m trying to find a new game to test it out and try to grow on it. I just finished my first full play through of BG3 so i’m kinda set on it lol
Nice! Good luck! If you have any more basic questions, we'll be happy to answer them here.
can someone correct me if I’m wrong in this! I’m making my first character, it’s related to health calculation
so if I’m a rogue starting at level 3, would it be 8+my constitution, then roll a d8 2 more times and add my constitution for each roll?
(I’m using point buy btw idk if that matters)
Yes that is correct
thank u!
You are correct.
As an aside: Some DMs will have you take the average instead of rolling
you can also take 5 HP instead of rolling a d8 if you want
this is actually written as player choice, though DMs tend to decide this often at tables

See those links above!
Yes
The links above explain.
The short version is D&D is make-believe, structured by rules so that everyone plays fair. The Dungeon Master is the narrator/referee who controls the world and everyone and everything in it, except the players, who each control their own Player Character.
The core of D&D is this:
- The DM describes the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
Lather, rinse, repeat. To play D&D, you need friends, the rules, dice, character sheets, an adventure, and a way to communicate.
How can I start playing today… or tomorrow?

Hello, I want to play a dnd game I once tried to play in a club but that didn’t work. How do I join a game? Can someone explain how the rules and lore works? thank you!

Do you have to be there ever game?
It’ll be somewhat difficult to find a game same day or even within 2 days. Typically a game takes a little bit of time to gather players, agree on a schedule, make characters, and otherwise get the ball rolling.
If you’re starting from scratch I recommend going through the Free Rules linked in this channels pins as well as #learn-to-play and making a character to help practice your knowledge.
If you feel ready and want to use this server to find a group there’s #find-a-game . If you want to maximize your chances of getting into a game it’s best to use multiple avenues. For group-finding online and in-person you can also try:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discords
- Other TTRPG & DnD social media groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)
- Local game stores
- Local libraries
- Your school clubs if you’re in school/uni
Usually there is a discussion with the group playing about expectations and scheduling.
But folks not showing up is a good way to cause a group/campaign to fall apart. And that's not very fun.
That makes a lot of sense, thank you. Is this discord have an area to make a game group or do I have to find other channels?
Not channels discord server
To find a group using this server there’s #find-a-game . Otherwise check out what I said to Helper just now.
As for the rules, i suggest flipping through the Free Rules linked in #learn-to-play and this channels pins. Make a practice character as you go along. We can’t really teach 1 on 1 on this server but we can’t answer a lot of newbie questions!
As for lore, there is no central lore to the game. The lore of your eventual DM’s game will be dependent on the setting they run, which can even be their own custom setting.
And yes it’s generally expected that a player will have consistent attendance unless they have some reasonable excuse (e.g. sick, feeling down, school, work, etc) or have worked it out with the DM beforehand
Thanks a lot! This is very professional and welcoming. I’m sorry if I’m a little clueless!
Don't apologize, everyone started right where you are 🙂
Everyone has to start somewhere.
The members here are very thorough with introducing you to the right avenues! :D
If you have a question, send it here, and somebody is bound to answer ASAP.
Thank you!
If you’d like a jumping off point for the lore bit, most DMs that aren’t running their own custom setting are running an official D&D setting which thankfully and typically have very thorough wikis and lore vids to browse through. The most popular official setting at least right now is the Forgotten Realms (Faerun), but many more exist. Their most important distinction imo is the themes they play into.
Some people find it easier to find games running a setting they like. In case you’re the same, here are a few of the most popular official settings:
- Forgotten Realms (high fantasy)
- Eberron (steampunk-ish noir)
- Greyhawk (swords & sorcery)
- Dark Sun (post apocalyptic)
- Ravenloft (horror)
Forgotten Realms is like the classic dnd?
Sort of-ish. It's quite an old and fleshed out setting, having been around for multiple editions.
The true classic would be Greyhawk.
Thank you very much
I found one with a good Story teller "Matthew Mercer"
Also what happens when your character is killed in a game?
That should be talked about at the table and/or with the DM. Typically it’s one of two options:
- If available, a revival spell may be cast on your character. These spells typically are expensive or have special conditions (e.g. you must have died within the last minute of the spell being cast, you must not be decapitated, etc).
- You roll up a new character
Cool!
Can you use a dead character in a different campaign.
Potentially, but it would be more like a “reboot” version of that character, starting over from scratch.
My question is actually more about the DND Beyond Site. Is there anywhere that you can put your profile as a PLAYER and not just the ones on the character sheet?
What do you mean?
If you create a campaign on the site, you’re considered the DM for that campaign.
If you want someone else to be the DM, they’d need to create the campaign instead.
Like on my Player Profile in general. Just something to let people know about me.
Ah, nothing like that, I’m afraid.
You could set up a signature, if you’re using the forums.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/profile
If you’re not using the forums, no one’s likely to see your profile anyway.
im looking for a game to be in
Please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use the Looking For Game channels to find a game and has important information on how to use the bot commands to create a post in those channels.

So does anyone have any tips to how really get into the magical world that is D&D?

Hello i'm new to the server, where is the best place to go on here to find an online group as a new player?
Check out #find-a-game to find instructions for this server's group search channels
Asking someone to share a campaign with you just for content is against server rules, just fyi
Hello I’m new here and love D&D and was wondering what to do

Well you can use the free rules but it can be hard to understand at first
Making a character can be one of the easiest thing to do
On the plus side, you have Internet and if you've got a microphone there are plenty of games. The big red post just above has guides to get started.
try me a quick quick learner
So you can ye use one of those free campaigns even tho their short like really short but good for starters
Where do I go to find dms looking for a group
BTW if your still in school you can try to find after school clubs or lunchtime clubs
Hello my good friends.
I want to make an unarmed martial artist like Akuma from street fighters.
With the strength of 15 and dexterity of 14
I want my character to fight completely unarmed without heavy armor and I want them to be able to throw fireballs.
I also don't enjoy multi-classing
Is that possible?
Sunsoul or draconic monk
You could choose the 2014 monk option Way of the Sun Soul which can hurl balls of radiant energy
I'm kinda new to this game.
So I would like it if you explain what they do.
#character-discussion would be a good place to ask
Ok thank you
Me to
It's very simple bro
You probably should elaborate or provide some actual information, rather than just pinging someone in response to a message that is 16 hours old
@jolly patrol You should check out #learn-to-play as well as this info box below

Monk tiefling
You'd have to upload them somewhere else and share a link.
But the folks in #character-discussion would be happy to give you feedback.
If you made on D&DBeyond you can post the share link here or in #character-discussion . Otherwise if it’s on PDF or an image you can upload it to a trusted filesharing site (e.g. Google Drive) and send the share link to that instead
If you’d like to use this server to find a group, check #find-a-game !

But how do i make a character
The process is described in the Free Rules.
Build a character:
- class
- species
- background
Fill in ability scores with the standard array, then apply modifiers as granted. Pick proficiencies, equipment, spells if applicable. It's all in the Free Rules.
tryna get other newcomers and form a party(strategic move)
You should post in #looking-for-players. Follow the #find-a-game info.
well i am not a dm so i dont think im allowed to do that, am i?
im pretty sure thats for dms
Can anyone help me in call how to start dnd?
Then post in #looking-for-dm.
im forming a party so i can find dms easily
Soliciting groups/games outside of the proper channels is off-topic and will be moderated.
fair
I think you might have a hard time finding anyone here who is willing/able to walk you through all the rules 1 on 1. Our usual recommendation is that you should read the Free Rules yourself, and come back to us if you have any specific questions.
At the least, take a look at putting a character together and reading how that works.
Hi everyone! I'm a total beginner, always been interested. I'm working my way through all the intro resources. Hope to play with some of you some time!
Welcome!

how can i find partys
You either post an ad yourself in #looking-for-dm by following the directions in #find-a-game or you contact the people who have posted in #looking-for-players, #looking-for-community, or #paid-looking-for-game.
#paid-looking-for-game. what dose this mean
It means you pay to play.
pay money?
Exactly.
bruh i really need a dm
Many DMs charge a small fee to cover the time it takes them to run a great campaign. You may find some free folks as well but that will be harder to land

I have a question. How do I create a custom weapon?
Do you mean in general or on d&d beyond? The latter is probably best asked in one of the DDB channels
Hiya!
So I’m like… new but not really new to dnd. Currently im dming a campaign that’s completely improve. And need help with homebrew character creation, leveling players and understanding how the heck spells work… I’ve watched more videos then I can count but nothing really makes sense
Check out #dm-discussion and #homebrew for assistance with the DM'ing and homebrew part.
As for leveling up, that's in the core rules (free) here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
The rules for spellcasting are also there.
If you have a specific question about them let us know here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)
Alrighty, thank you!!
How do i send a message in the looking for dm channel
Read the instructions carefully in #find-a-game (hint: bot commands start with /looking-for then select the kind of post you want to create like dm).
Guys I can't always be consistent with sessions but I really want to actually learn DND in autistic and don't grasp concepts well. Any advice for me? I have my characters but I don't know when to roll for what and videos don't help alot
Hey everyone I'm fairly new to DND but I understand the concept and am looking for people to play with any help?
I have one question, are artificer just gun dealers in DND?
||(i know they also have other weapons)||
They are not. They can be made to something like that pretty easily though
But generally artificers are a spellcaster class, but instead of directly casting theor spells, they have magic infused items to do so, kind of like inventions to gove an example (which can be flavored in many ways)
Hey everyone
Ayo
D&D beyond
In the drop-down menu, Collections > Browse & Create Homebrew > Create Homebrew Magic Item
Thx
does anyone know of any good youtube videos/resources related to character creation? I'm pretty new to dnd and I'm having the most trouble when it comes to creating a character lol
Dungeon dudes have a good playlist
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L&si=1hbjl47umVODA5F_ this is the one for 2014 but not a lot of difference to 2024 other than ASIs are from background not race now
But good video to help with character themes and RP
you're the best, thanks!
If i want most of my items to be custom, is it possible to use already existing items and rename them or how should i do it
yep, that's very common. It'd called reflavouring and there's an expression in D&D: "Flavor is free"
The main thing to keep in mind is that how you're describing things aligns with the game you're playing in, so check with your DM
Thx
Is there an easy way to like see what u should roll lik dex or whatever since i never rlly understood those stats specifically
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Your stats determine your modifiers.
So let's say you are a level 1 fighter and have a strength ability score of 16 and you need to make an strength athletics check which you are proficient in. Your proficiency bonus is determined by your overall character level.
So putting this together you get:
D20 + strength modifier (+3 from your strength score) + proficiency bonus (+2 from your overall character level).
Do you mean you don't understand what the stats are or what stat to use for a d20 Test? If the former refer to the Dyno's & Undying's posts above. If the latter that will be shown on your character sheet (e.g. acrobatics is under dex).
Your DM may ask for d20 Tests using non-typical abilities (e.g. Intimidation using Strength instead of Charisma). In both cases you'll have some way to know what you're adding to a roll.
hello, if i duel wield as a fighter does that mean i can attack twice? also if it does, the extra attack ability of fighter applies to it? for example can i attack for times at level 5?
Wielding two weapons does not automatically give you extra attacks. However, a weapon with Light -property, such as a shortsword or scimitar gives you an additional attack (without adding the modifier to the damage) that you can make as a bonus action when wielding two of them (both must be light)
so no longsword & shortsword combo if i want two attacks..?
So at level 5 you would get 3 swings because that light weapon uses your bonus action so action swing twice bonus action swing once
As for the latter question the answer is no, Extra Attack does not apply to two-weapon fighting. Extra Attack only allows you 1 extra attack as part of your Attack Action.
Short sword gives u the two swings
so i can swing twice with the short sword and once with the longsword?
No
i see, thank you
Opposite
If you wield two light weapons, then you can make one attack as a bonus action, so at 5th level wielding two shortswords, you could make 2 attacks with Extra attack using your action, and then use bonus action to make one more thanks to the light property (though without adding the modifier to the damage)
