hi
Yeah
Alrighty!
The circle is the ones you’re proficient in, so you add your proficiency bonus.
In essence, those are the areas where you’ve trained or have a natural talent, so you’re more likely to succeed at those.
Welcome!
thank youu
Alrighty- so example acro(dex) would stay a +3 but stealth(dex) would be a +5?
Yep
Ah ok!
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
Ahh ok
Ok so what do i do for my intelligence
Investigation is +2 but my normal intelligence is a -1
So you’d have a total of +1 for Investigation.
Alright
Can i dm you a picture of it to make sure i have it right?
Go for it
Looks good!
Take your pick. What have you got left?
Hmmm
Current hit points and temp hit points- armor class- initiative- speed- equipment- passive wisdom
Basicaly everything else
Your current hit points will equal your maximum hit points to start.
In your class features, it says this:
Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier
And you won’t have any temporary hit points to start.
Initiative is just your Dex mod, so +3.
Your speed depends on your race. Wood elves have 35; the rest of the elves have 30.
Passive scores are 10 + whatever you’d normally add to the roll.
So if your normal Perception bonus is +0, your Passive Perception is 10+0.
You’ll want to check your class and background for any starting equipment.
And you’ll need to pick your armor there before you can do your Armor Class.
Im doing dark elf
So yeah, a 30, then.
Speed
Ok so the 30 goes in speed?
Yeah
alrighty!
oh?
Your armor class is by default 10 + your Dex modifier. Otherwise it's dependent on what equipment and/or features you have.
Yours will be higher depending on which armor you choose.
For equipment it'd mainly be determined by what armor you have. For a level 1 character this will be whatever armor you've picked as part of your starting equipment if your class gives you some armor
how should i make a character? is there a guide for what things i need somewhere
Actually no it depends on the armor
It does depend on your equipment. Your armor is part of your equipment, not sure why you're disagreeing.
Rangers can pick:
(a) scale mail or (b) leather armor
Without armor a character's AC is 10 + Dex
With armor it's dependent on the kind of armor
Scale mail would give you an AC of 16, but you’d have disadvantage on Stealth checks.
Or leather would give you an AC of 14. Your Stealth checks wouldn’t be affected, but you may take more damage.
Start with reading the free rules
Armor Class (AC). Armor protects its wearer from attacks. The armor (and shield) you wear determines your base Armor Class
No armor=10 unless your a class that focuses around not wearing armor then it’ll state to use dex, int or what ever to ac
Other times you might get certain equipment that changes your AC. A Shield (if you have proficiency in shields) gives a +2 bonus to AC for example.
Other other times a feature may give you another way to calculate your AC. For example, the Monk's unarmored defense.
Not true. Without armor or a shield a character's AC is equal to 10 + their Dex modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#FillInNumbers
oh? alright
uh- leather
Huh
Apperently o need to read the rules better
so for me would it be 13?
If you are not wearing armor and your Dex is 16-17 then yes
If you are wearing armor then you would refer to the AC calculation of your armor, listed in the item's description. For leather armor it is 11 + Dex mod
Yeah
You'd put it in the AC section on the character sheet
Should be at the very top if you're using the 2024 sheet
Then you'd write down leather armor in your equipment section along with all your other starting equipment
AC is armor class right?
whats cp sp ep gp and pp?
Currency
oh?
Copper pieces, silver pieces, gold pieces, and platinum pieces
Your starting wealth is determined by your class and background
so in the big box i just write down leather armor?
Along with your other starting equipment, yes
how do i pick a class? and my background is criminal
You'd go to the relevant class page and write down all the features you get as relevant for your level. Here's the class page for Ranger, which says what you get at level 1:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Ranger
Also spamandtuna might have accidentally mixed 2014 and 2024 😅 . If you're making a 2024 Ranger you will always have studded leather armor (12 + Dex, so 15 for you) by default unless you choose the gold option to buy starting equipment instead
ok so id be level one correct?
By default, yes
You already picked ranger for your class, no?
well good thing i chose leather already! (i have style in mind...not practicality whihc i probably should be doing instead-)
yup!
They said they’re playing with the Essentials Kit, which contains 2014 rules.
ohh- OHHH
Ah didn't see that
thats right- so im a lvl 1 ranger right?
Yeah
alrighty
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#Ranger
Here's the relevant class page then, my bad
So in total you'd have everything under the Class Features header + Favored Enemy + Natural Explorer as per the class table
oh wow
ok so would i write down the equipment from this link?
As for the rest of your equipment you'd get:
- Your choice of 2 shortswords or 2 simple melee weapons
- Your choice of a dungeoneer's pack or an explorer's pack
- 1 long bow
- 1 quiver
- 20 arrows
And yes you'd write down that equipment. If we want to get semantical you wouldn't write down what you didn't pick for the 1st two points
Your first choice is between 2 shortswords or 2 simple melee weapons. Shortswords are easy enough, they're weapons that can be found in the weapons section of the Basic Rules.
does dagger count as a shortsword?
No, those are distinct items
I'll link you to the weapons section of the Basic Rules once I explain the ""simple melee weapons" thing
The "2 simple melee weapons" part refers to a category of weapon. Both "melee" and "simple" are identifier tags (this is why, for example, Rogues get proficiency in specifically simple weapons + a few others while Rangers get proficiency in simple & martial weapons)
Here is the link to the Weapons section of the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#Weapons
At the very beginning you can see the simple melee weapons. You can pick any 2 from the list, even double up on the same weapon if you didn't want the shortswords
ill pick 2 daggers
so for my AC id put 14? just making sure
done!
now whats passive wisdon
that was charisma
i do have a +0 but not for wis
so 12 ya?
so 12?
Yeah
So you would write down that you have 2 Daggers in the equipment section. I would also write down the attacks you can make with a dagger in the "attacks & spellcasting" section.
Daggers have more properties than just being "melee" and "simple." You'll see they also have the "finesse" "light" and "thrown (range 20/60)" What each property means is described immediately after all the weapons are listed
Importantly, there's 2 unique attacks you can make with a dagger (technically 8, but we can condense them to 2).
- Finesse means you can use your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack & damage roll. Since you are a Ranger prioritizing Dex I would only write down the attack info that uses Dexterity. Since you have proficiency in simple weapons you'd write +5 in the "attack bonus" section and 1d4+3 in the "damage/type" section.
- Ranged (20/60) refers to the range of the weapon if you decide to throw the dagger at an enemy instead of stabbing them with it. Just to save space I'd add "R 20/60" or something similar to the "damage/type section" or somewhere else convenient on your sheet to remember. The 20 part refers the range in feet that the thrown attack is made normally, then anywhere between 20 feet to 60 feet it's made with disadvantage, then throwing past 60 feet is impossible.
- Light means you can use a dagger for the purposes of fighting with 2 weapons. As per the 2-weapon fighting rules you wouldn't add your ability modifier to the damage roll of this special attack so I'd call it unique enough to write down separately. As earlier it'd be +5 for the "attack bonus" section and 1d4 (R 20/60) for the "damage/type section"
so i would just write the names of the attacks or write down all of it
alrighty!!
what do i write on the hit point max line?
i think i made a character using d&d beyond, is that all I need to start my first game?
Just the attacks and any immediately relevant properties (i.e. the range) imo. As long as you can reference the dagger in the rulebook or somewhere on your sheet it should be ok to not write out "finesse, light, simple, melee" every single time
10 + Con
Do it for the longbow too (To save space as earlier I would exclude writing down the heavy & two-handed properties, as long as you know to reference it as necessary). In the end I think you should have 3 attacks:
- Longbow, +5, 1d8+3 (R 150/600)
- Dagger, +5, 1d4+3 (R20/60)
- Dagger (off-hand), +5, 1d4 (R20/60)
where do i write that
oo ok
If you'd like feedback on your character you can always share it here or in #character-discussion . Otherwise if you feel ready you can try finding a game. Using this server to find a group there's #find-a-game , but there's many other avenues. You can also look in:
- Other D&D or TTRPG-related discord servers
- Other social media TTRPG groups (e.g. Facebook groups, Reddit's r/lfg)
- TTRPG forums (e.g. those found on roll20 or D&DBeyond)
- Local businesses (e.g. game stores, libraries)
- Local clubs (e.g. school/college clubs)
so the character sheet is all I need to get started?
Very center of the character sheet. Personally when I did physical sheets I wrote down the properties of my weapons as indented bullet points in the equipment section
attacks and spellcastings?
so theres 3 lil boxes- is that where i write this?
theres 3 boxes in one big box
Usually, yes. You might want to have at least a decent familiarization with the Free Rules to have easier chances of getting into a group. While it's not absolutely required for every group it does help the flow of the game by not having to stop and teach as often.
Some DMs might prefer you to remake your character, just as part of their preference. This is usually the case if you've premade a character including a fleshed out backstory, since ideally characters will be made for the DM's setting instead of the other way around
Yeah. For the 3 lines I'd put what I listed earlier:
#dnd-newcomers message
alrighty! i just wanna make sure
done!!
any tips finding my first game? the channel here looks really intimidating with a bunch of requirements I need
Yes and no. Making a character is great rules practice, and I'd say for a newbie only using the Free Rules the character will most likely be accepted assuming you get into a group.
The no part comes in on a DM by DM basis. Some may want everyone to make characters together, some may run settings without Elves, some may have specific custom character creation rules.
The biggest reason for character rejection in my experience is applying to a group with a character with a backstory that is too specific and/or fleshed out, especially one that either:
- Doesn't consider the DM's setting (e.g. making a character using the Eberron setting lore for a Forgotten Realms campaign)
- Would force heavy additions to the DM's setting (e.g. saying your character follows your own made up deity)
- Clearly mismatches your starting level (e.g. saying your level 1 character is an archmage)
lol i need to find a group that can walk me through my first game then
I’m in @humble sable
lol thank you, i wanna learn the game by summer for a group im friends with irl
alr imma go to bed but ill continue the sheet in the morning! im excited :3
I can’t teach you anything thing though I need to learn myself😂
hopefully we find someone who can 🙏
Yeah I really wanna get into it
My advice would be:
- Take your time, finding a group can be a slow process and there's no pressure to find one quickly.
- Spread your net wide, the more avenues you use to find a game the more likely you are to find a group.
- Don't be afraid to reject a group. Like dating, not every table is right for you. If you don't mesh well, or if there's problematic behavior, or any similar reason just remember no D&D is better than bad D&D.
- Know your options. A standard, longform campaign is not the only option for a game. One-shots, Play-By-Posts, & Westmarches are all alternative format D&D games that some players prefer. Many newbies I find like One-shots, which are games that are typically only 1-2 sessions long. Play-By-Posts are text only games that are great for people who can't VC or attend in-person and/or have an inconsistent schedule. Westmarches are a more complex topic that I won't delve into deeply to not write a lot, but in essence they're decentralized games run by many DMs with a larger community of players.
- Even if a group doesn't explicitly advertise themselves as newbie friendly, it's always good to ask if you are interested!
alrighty!
that’s why i asked this haha
Yeah I’m sure you’ll be fine
So, I am COMPLETELY new to DND. What can anybody here tell me about it and maybe some helpful information? I havent even created an OC. How do I even go about that?
im new too, but i’d say go to youtube
#learn-to-play start with the free rules
Here, we have an lfg system, which is explained in #find-a-game , as pointed out by Molten in the other channel
If you want general tips on how to find groups, a community member ( @harsh fjord ) has made a guide:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
Okay thank you
I made a boo boo with character creation (adjusting a pre-made) and now my Spellbook is no longer in my inventory... And I can't add it😥
do local hobby stores host games? im wondering if i could just walk in and ask for some help with it
like gamehaven as an example
Im new to dnd, coming from pf2e, where I’m a gm for three years. Haven’t played dnd yet, is the new core rule book physical + beyond sale a good starting point?
You can find tutorial videos on YouTube explaining the rules

A lot of them do, especially the ones in cities. Even my small nearby city has like at least 3 groups running.
Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to add it to my online character sheet
Sounds like you've disabled 2014 content; spellbooks are only listed equipment in the 2014 rules. I believe in 2024 they're just represented with a "book" item
Oooooohhhh
To access the spellbook option, you'll need to go into your character sheet
- Select Manage
- Select character Settings
- Enable 2014 content
Yes I did disable 2014 rules and I do have a book
"Book of lore"
Once you've enabled 2014 content, you'll be able to add a spellbook under 'manage inventory'
Gotcha, thanks. It's character with only 2024 rules, so I assume having a book of some kind will be sufficient then
Should be, you just need something to track that you have a spellbook
how do i dm for my friends
You describe the game world for them, they describe what your character does, you describe how the world and the people and creatures in it react
Rinse and repeat and you have the basics of the game
You use the game rules and monster stat blocks to help you determine how the world/creatures/people react
That is the very basics of the gameplay loop
However, if you have more specific questions, that'd probably help
starting to think i went lill over board on the world i have leyed out for them
Easy to do and if you're new, I'd suggest starting small
the world ive made in a nutshell so far
The World in Chains
The Corrupt Heavenly Principles dictate fate, suppressing free will. The Titanous, three god-like rulers, enforce this cosmic order through their enforcers, the 12 Demies, each ruling a unique biome with their own oppressive ideology.
Yet, rebellion brews. The Cultists—fractured into idealists, fanatics, and dark scholars—seek to shatter fate, but at what cost?
With chaos looming, will you uphold the celestial order, join the rebellion, or forge your own destiny?
As a first time DM who doesn't have the basics down patt, I'd maybe focus instead on making an adventure, not a world
The world can come later, there's no rush. You don't need to have a movie trailer level pitch, you can start simple with "You all meet at a small festival in a quiet little village, when suddenly gnolls attack"
Build out from there, or something like that
Yup. There's a problem in a place. Involve the party. When they're halfway through solving it unveil a complication.
How do you people find/make art of your characters? I always have problem with that. At best I can find a reference, since I can't draw myself. Even through Midjourney and whatnot the results are awful
A dollmaker, a video game, Heroforge. #dnd-arts-and-crafts or #third-party might suggest more.
I avoid AI on principle and either
- Use a character builder tool such as heroforge
- Find a near enough image
- Commission something (expensive, but a valid option)
Video game?
Ultimately character art doesn't matter to your practical ability to play the game
Yeah, like Baldur's Gate 3 which has a very robust character creator
I'd use AI I just dunno how to make good prompts
Eh the character creator is alright
Given the fact I said I refuse to use AI on principle, please don't ping me to talk about AI
Aight xd
what does meta gaming mean exactly ?
I said robust, that's all
There are plenty of games out there with detailed character creation options. Heck, Veilguard has theirs for a free download.
It has lots of uses, but a common one is "Using knowledge you have as a player and the fact you're playing a game, that your character wouldn't have access to, in order to determine how your character acts, in a way that's a detriment to the enjoyment of the game"
An example of that definition might be a player going "The DM isn't gonna kill us in this encounter, because I know they've prepped a big battle for later because I saw the minis. So we don't have to worry about using any spell slots, it'd be a waste given we're not gonna die"
I guess it's I either learn how to prompt or stay with empty hands
I guess so, if those truly are your only two options
i played 2 oneshots and just came up with a character idea
how do i find someone to play w
thanks mr warlock
you're welcome
Hi, soo my friend and i want to get into D&D and he made a character that is some sort of a parasite that lives in a hat and whoever who put on the hat will be taken over by the parasite and and the parasite took over a normal human guy so will his race be a human or is it a homebrew thingy ?
that's 100% homebrew
And if you're new to D&D, I'd recommend against allowing it
Ok
It's usually recommended that new players stick to the official species, as opposed to making ones up themselves

Ok
Since when did dnd start?
1974 was the first year it was published
Yeah, last year was the 50th anniversary.
There's been a lot of revisions and new editions over the years. If you're interested, the Wikipedia page has a lot of good information.
You may also find this useful as a set of examples for how a bunch of pop culture(ish) characters could be represented mechanically as D&D characters. Note that there's no one "right" way to do that, depending on what things you want to emphasize.
Hi! I am new to D&D, (although I have collected many trinkets...drawn maps...bought dice...) I have no idea what I'm doing. I learn by doing better than I do by reading, is there any sort of suggestion? I learn as I go, but I struggle to find a decent group where I can do that. Let me know if this wasn't the correct channel for this.

Somebody gave you the new player autopost. I think you'll have better luck than you think in trying to find a beginner-friendly group as long as you make certain that you are specific in your searching about beginner/newbie/new player-friendly. In part to that end, @harsh fjord has a great guide to finding a group linked in their bio.
Hello! i'm new to dnd and don't really know whats going on, any advice on how to get started? i've got all the books and dice I need just wondering what else i can do to get started. ☺️
Do you have people to play with? That's the real hard thing to find when you get started. 🙂
I need help finding people and I don’t use Facebook
I don’t know anyone else who plays so no
Hey
Then I recommend you read the guide that @harsh fjord has in their profile, just like @carmine shuttle suggested. Can't play the game by yourself so you'll need to find a newcomer friendly group to join.
Been trying to find people to play with, to no success myself. Atleast IRL anyways. Found something online but its only once a week and I want more lol.
New to this group just wanted to check it out an find someone new people to hang out with on here an to play
U can join other campaigns
Hard to find other campaigns atm. :/
I mean we've just had @keen sleet, @latent bane, @zenith ice and @round zodiac talk about finding people
Y'all should play together
And, right about now would be when a mod woudl point people to #looking-for-community or similar.
So all DM each other before a mod deletes all this, go forth and adventure LOL
That’s a general thing there are more players then gms
Me too!!
Heck, here's me as a foreverDM trying to find a group to be a player and now I'm thinking I should just run a game online for a bunch of new players
Sounds cool
if you could that’d ve amazing, im just trying to figure out how to make characters lol
most of the other stuff makes sense to me
what are cantrips?
Level 0 spells that can be cast without a slot
So, you can cast cantrips as often as you want
Send me a DM or add me as a friend
Not a mod but not supposed to solicit games here #find-a-game is where to go
so regular spells are limited is the difference
What do you guys think ❓
There are some really great resource videos on character creation in the bot post. Plus we're here to answer questions if they come up.

Gentle reminder - do not solicit or organize games on this server outside the Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game for information on how to use those channels.
Unfortunately, there aren't enough of us to do 1-on-1 teaching sessions.
no worries, ill ask interhex in a dm ^^
whatcha looking for in a perfect world @humble sable ?
im not quite sure what you mean
Just help-wise. I can do my part.
Example: you have 4 1st level spell slots, you can cast a 1st lvl spell 4 times before you need to recharge your spell slots
And so on
Cantrips you can cast whenever
Although if your DM permits it you can cast spells out of combat without wasting your spell slot
That's what our DM did for RP purposes
Yeah, sorry. Just seemed like a perfect storm of multiple newcomers LFG all at the same time
I'd be careful with that advice, that is very unusual in my experience. As in: it has never happened.
I don't know if that's something I'd take as "normal" advice for a new player.
Sure, plenty of things can be fun. But we don't want to set expectations for new players in this channel that aren't following the rules of the game
But like
DM sets the rules that's why I said if DM permits it
It's a personal experience
Yes, the DM can change anything. But likely they'll not change the particular thing you suggested. So it's unhelpful advice for the most part.
Hey I'm trying to find a dm willing to help new players
Please use the Looking for Game channels
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Then we're talking about what's UNlikely
But still can happen
Which, again, not helpful
It's also unlikely that the DM will give you a legendary item to start out with.
It doesn't mean we should suggest to new players that this is something that can be expected.
Okay we need to get back on topic please. This is the channel for new folks to get started learning core game rules and mechanics of D&D
Back to D&D newcomer questions and support
Thanks
I’m not really a newcomer, but I do have a question. How can I find offline groups? The one I’ve been playing with has kinda disbanded, I’m not on good terms with the local AL, and I’m turning up null trying to find ads for private groups. Im not the biggest fan of playing online, so if possible, I’d like to try to find people to play with in person. Are there forums or something I can look into for this?
Facebook, local libraries, game stores, and similar venues are likely going to be your best bet
Maybe it’ll just take time lol
It always does, even online!
@versed canopy whatcha need?
.@harsh fjord has a great guide to finding a group - not just online - in their bio.
I wish there was a way to see who wants to play on their phones versus on a PC... I use foundry and phones don't work on it.
Can always ask in your LFG game posting or the thread attached to it.
hey i wanna make a plasmoid character but it wont let me on beyond
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
is there a way... to not do that? or can i not ask that here
Public library + pencil & paper character sheet.
so i should copy it as homebrew
that seems kinda hard to do and im kinda stupid. i may just scrap the character
Pen & paper is always possible
Download a character sheet and fill it in
The free rules/phb walk you through filling in the sheet, and you can ask your dm and/or fellow players in your game or here for help if you need it
Don't scrap a character just because you can't access it in the DDB character builder!
i dont have a game atm. i wanna get into a westmarch but i heard that there is no such thing as a good westmarch lol
i just wanted to make a silly ugy
Then make the silly guy without DDB!
Just let the free rules/phb walk you through it
o7
Read it all first, then follow it step-by-step

Hello!
As someone who is new, i am having trouble imagining a way to role-play a Symbolist Cleric who worships the god of Ilmater casting spells, im pretty sure that it would be quite boring saying i cast bless 50 times.
Since i am quite new to the world of DND, how do clerics cast spells verbally during role-plays? and maybe someone can give examples?
To be honest, I'd mostly just say 'I cast Bless'
Describing spellcasting in extreme RP details tends to bog down combat
At most, I might have a standard RP snippet for a specific spell. Like my cleric who casts Guidance by smacking people on the shoulder and telling them not to screw it up
Well you could just say I cast bless
But if you really want to you could say something like
I call upon the divine power of my great god to bless this here man and help them along their travels
Since it kinda makes sense but it's a bit much
"Ilmater, oh Crying Lord - Bless this man, take his burdens that he might be eased and his weapons and defenses serve your will. In your name, I beg of you."
One sentence, has the name of the spell in the text, flavorful but not overly heavy. Boom.
Yeah
if you say blessings before eating dinner with your family just do that with a different god lol
Oh wow i would actually like that even more, i genuinely thought that clerics had to chant spells, but i think a quick tap on the should work fine as the last thing i want is to slow down combat even more
It depends on the spell. But even if there's a verbal component, there's no set rules about what that sounds like
thank you guys for the ideas! i think ill save chants for very important scenes where it makes sense, even i would find it annoying if my group member took 7 business days to cast bless
+2 for shipping
I just like to flavor it with the specific God. Like Ilmater, he's all about suffering so others do not suffer. So something as simple as "Ilmater, in your infinite endurance - I pray you heal this man. Let his pain become your pain."
lol id look at you dumb until it worked and just jawdrop (i dont play religious characters)
silly little ways to interact with other characters im learning
you can do that in game right?
Of course. Interactions with other characters is the heart and soul of the game.
I played a snarky Cleric once.
"Lathander, shine your holy light upon this moron. For while he is foolish and meets your enemies steel with his own flesh every day, he does not deserve to die. Please heal his wounds. Again."
“who are you talking to?”
haha, im excited to play my first game. Do druids get “speak with animals” as a first spell in addition to what i choose?
"Lathander, heed not the morons words. Know that he should shut his trap before his friends allow him to die."
If you’re using the 2024 rules, yeah.
ah that’s why i have it appear twice on my character sheet for dnd beyond
It’s part of their Druidic feature at level 1.
You know Druidic, the secret language of Druids. While learning this ancient tongue, you also unlocked the magic of communicating with animals; you always have the Speak with Animals spell prepared.
that's soo intriguing, i'd love to roleplay a snarky cleric in the future too, just imagining the possibilities with him casting revivify is making me chuckle
Who told you could hit the snooze? lathander, mind waking this doofus up?
all these ideas are making me even more excited to finally try out DND, hoping i get accepted on the campaigns i've been applying for
when spells refer to creatures, are those including players? would i consider myself a creature?
cool!
Yes
Oh, mighty Lathander. Your child has met his end once more. Even now he speeds his way to your bosom. I ask that you reject him. It is not his time, and he would greatly annoy you anyway. Send him back. Return him to us, mighty Lathander. Let us suffer his presence, not you."
you sure you want him with you up there lathander? do yourself a favor, keep him down-ere
cool so i can cast longstrider on myself to move 40 instead of 30 right?
Exactly. I just say it with more flowery language.
Yep!
If a spell targets a creature of your choice, you can choose yourself unless the creature must be Hostile or specifically a creature other than you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells#Targets
i'll keep that in mind, i think i'm starting to get it, maybe rather than casting an actual chant, ill just add my characters personality to it, and add some word play
oh actually 45, im a wood elf so +5 feet
okay i think i have my character! i can change the stats once i figure out how the dm wants us to set them up
Point buy (and/or the standard array, which is a specific intance of point buy) is generally a safe default.
it’s standard, which i already did :D
Hello do you no what books i have to buy to start DND please ?
You don't need to buy any books at the beginning. The free basic rules can be found on the D&D Beyond website and are a great starter point

You can certainly buy the books but it's not a necessity
ok thanx and please what's the different between player's handbook and the basics rules ?
The player's handbook has more character creation options included, such as more subclasses and species.
But the actual 'how to play' rules are the same.
so if i want read just a book to start to play it's better read the player's handbook ?
to have all the rules and have more charaters possibility
If you want to buy a book, yes. But if you just want to learn about the rules and what you can expect, there is no harm in checking out the free material first.
ok thanx
Level 20 is the rules as written maximum level
oh cool
To add a little more information, this applies to single and multi-class characters. In total, you will only have 20 total levels.
i have no idea how multi class works
what's upgrade when a charater win level ?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Multiclassing
I wouldn't recommend it though.
lol i wouldnt want to start with it yea
Depends on your class and your level. Here's the progression for a barbarian as an example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#BarbarianFeatures
thanx but the caractéristics are upgrade or not ?
Most classes get that option every four levels: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Level4BarbarianAbilityScoreImprovement
So after a while the dice rolls will be too easy since we will always have bonuses no ?
No, the way the game is set up whenever you roll there's always a risk.
Get powerful enough, and you might not be asked to roll the dice at all for some tasks.
ok but i don't understand if i throw a dice and i have a +5 bonus cause i'm level 20 it's not to simple ?
@shut slate thank you for the help, sorry if I upset you
No upset, but the forum is for helping newcomers. if you're not receptive to help, I can only wish you good luck. If take very situational spells without broad utility early on, you're going to have a harder time, or at the least are goind to feel less useful.
This game is all about player agency though -- so your choices are your own.
However taking "Longstrider" to travel 10 feet per turn faster instead of say, "Entangle" which could lock down a combat for your friends to fight better... well, good luck with that.
okay sorry
no apology needed. I'm sure you'll be happy with your choices.
I don’t know why it wouldn’t be allowed but I was making an NPC for my first campaign I’m gonna DM and I was wondering if it’s common or like weird to play as a character in one campaign and use them as an NPC in another
I consider it one of the perks of DMing to use your PCs (or even retired PCs of your friends) to populate your adventures with!
The rub, of course, is to not outshine the PCs of the current adventure.
If I wanted to make my character mute (by choice) how would I go about doing that?
This is a bit more of a #character-discussion thing
I'd strongly recommend against it. The game is built on communication, so making obstacles to that adds unnecessary difficulty to the game.
There are ways to make it work you just need to speak with your party and your dm about it before doing it
^ Agreed, but even then, I think it's tryng to pull off a complicated roleplay task, even for a veteran player.
Nigh impossible to play a spellcaster with verbal component spells with a vow of silence
O ok my bad
Common Sign Language is a thing now. 🙂
I don't necessarily know if that's the best way to frame it. Playing a mute character presents some unique difficulties for interacting with the rest of the party, but nothing a little check-in with the DM prior to pitching the character idea can't fix. After all, sign language is an official language in game, and third person description of what your character does / wants is very possible.
"I signal that I plan to open the door."
Is just as reasonable as
"I tell everyone that I'm going to open the door."
Or
"I, Grognak, am going to open this door"
Did they introduce that in 2024?
They did
Thank you for your inputs!
(As for verbal components, which is often the biggest mechanical question people are concerned about, as long as it's a sound that is as loud as conversational talking, it'll be the same as speaking the components normally (mechanically)).
Yes.
where can i find people to play with without vc
Look for play by post (pbp) or text-based games
I do see some posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community on a fairly regular basis.
Hi! im relatively new to Dnd, my current experience limited to: one dnd session with friends in which all i did was make a character sheet and our first basic combat, ive played baldurs gate and watched d20/CR (im aware typical dnd is nothing like that just giving context as to my experience.)
where would you recommend i start to really get into dnd?

Where can I find groups online I can play with. My family refuses to let me go to clubs for dnd and my school only lets the younger years play at their club. I have a bit of a strict schedule so that might be a problem. Any advice?

how does preparing spells work? do you always know the spells you know then can only cast however many of them however many times before they reset or do can you use them whenever?
For a "prepared" caster, they usually have a larger spell list that they can pull from. Preparing spells means you get to choose a number of spells from that list that you can use in a given period, typically until the next long rest.
When you choose your prepared spells, you can cast them as many times as you like as long as you have the spell slots to cast them. As an example, a level 1 Wizard who's prepared Shield and Magic Missile might choose to cast each spell once, or one of them twice
im building a level 3 eldritch knight is that basically the same rules
Your spellcasting feature on your subclass will tell you how spellcasting will work for your class.
"You know three 1st-level wizard spells of your choice, two of which you must choose from the abjuration and evocation spells on the wizard spell list."
As per the text, EK doesn't prepare spells; they're "known" casters since you make your own spell list from the criteria the subclass gives.
Exception for the spell replacement thing, since that's limited to when you level up
so i choose the spells then treat them as though im preparing from a spell list?
If it helps to understand it that way then yeah
Technically they aren't prepared, they're just known
but they still require spell slots for casting though?
A spell being prepared doesn't mean it uses spell slots. Both known and prepared spells require spell slots to be cast
A spell being prepared means you've selected it to be used for the day from a larger class spell list available to you, such as with Cleric, Druid, and Bard
if youve selected it for the day you can only cast it per spell slot, right?
You can only cast a spell if you have a spell slot of the required level or higher. Exceptions exist for certain racial features, feats, class features, etc that allow you to cast a certain spell w/o a spell slot.
so if i have two level 1 spell slots and know 3 spells i can cast 1 twice before a long rest or two once before a long rest
Yup
aight i think i get it now
As long as all 3 spells are level 1
Besides this server as Noob mentioned, check the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Explore function!
whats the difference between casting something as a spell vs as a ritual
casting as a spell is faster but costs a spell slot. Casting as a Ritual takes the casting time of the spell plus 10 minutes but doesn't cost a spell slot
Spiritual Weapon
If I have Proficiency with a weapon, do I add that while trying to attack with the spiritual weapon?
No. It's a spell attack
Thx
where can i find the druid subclasses
Anyone know why you can only choose one subclass for Rogues when using the Character Builder at D&Dbeyond?
like online? or in books
anywhere i have no idea what they are
you could just tell me too i dont mind
all classes only get 1 subclass
Yeah it was online, I did not purchase the 2024 online, I bought a physical copy of the book, and thought it would be a fun subclass to play assassin and only Thief comes up.
i see
lol
friend me and ill send it
hey im new to DND and im hoping to learn and find a group 😄
i keep hearing the fun stuff my irl sister does when she plays - im hoping to learn and meet new people 😄
#find-a-game for finding groups
you have a physical book?
what do i say tho TvT im not great at talking to people TvT
uh idk, im a introvert
same TvT
Hey Bread - I am new so do that in D&D Beyond?
so you have a physical book right?
Yes
players handbook im assuming?
Yes that is correct
and your trying to make a character using dnd beyond?
But I guess what I should have done is just bought it at the site?
uh not really
physical books are imo much better
Yes, But under subclasses it only lists the Theif, and not Assassin, but I can not figure out how to get it to show.
your trying to make a character for what?
To print a character sheet with all the details.
ok so theres a much better way to do this instead of using beyond
(I am new, and was told this was the easiest way to create one.
Okay. I am listening.
You only get one subclass on Beyond, and need to buy the others
Or specifically the sourcebook with them
How do you buy the others?
Oh okay. So not really worth it unless you are going to use it.
go to dms ill create a character with you step by step
you would like to create a character too?
yes plz
k
could you look at my character and make sure it looks alright, i think i made one
just send it in dms and ill check it out!
im already 50/50 for liking this server
?
dont worry about it 🙂
alright :D
looks like you’re the good 50 haha
i try to be
Does anyone know how to join games. ive been looking and i need some help.
Thanks👍
np :D
I found the Solo Adventurer Tool Box 1 and 2 on archive and I can wait to do a solo run
I'd never heard of this before so I just looked it up and it sounds super neat. I had no idea something like that existed
There are ways to solo d&d is it recommended not really. But if people wanna d&d with out a group or gm those tools will help
you are DM and Playing but there is tables to help direct the gameplay
what chanel should i ask about optimizing/planning a build?
#optimization if you are going for mechanical builds
#character-discussion if you want advise on stuff like backstory character traits etc
Generally #optimization for optimisation, and #character-discussion for more broad, less crunchy character discussion
ok thanks
Hello would any good players be free to help me in around 4 hours
Are you #looking-for-players ?
Umm no
Like character creation with like homebrew
There's no real need to book peoples time in advance
If you think you're gonna be around in 4 hours looking for help with #character-discussion or #homebrew, just turn up and start asking questions
Oh ok ty

Ranger Feature:
How does "favorite enemy work?" I can't find it on the book.
grants advantage to tracking survival and launguage when related to a chosen enemy
Depends on which ruleset you're using. The updated version doesn't work like described in the post just above me.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Ranger
Here's a link to the free rules, which details all the Ranger's abilities
Hi does anyone know where to start playing D%D online or on the server
how does it work now? its been some time since i played a ranger so my info might be outdated
It works just like it says in the link that I posted
This server doesn't host any games specifically, but you can start your search online by following the steps in #find-a-game
We are following the 2024 beyond rules
Y that's what I meant cheers
Then you want the Free Rules link that Dosh posted.
Then the link I posted is what you're looking for
Thx so much
Oh, it's the same as what I have... still don't get it. Do I just choose the enemies? Or they are the enemies I mark with the hunter's mark? Because I know we used to choose them, and a Habitat, right?
Where can you use the looking for commands
Those old mechanics aren't used at all anymore, and this new ability just lets you use your Hunter's Mark for free a couple of times.
It's not tied to a creature type or habitat at all anymore.
Any channel that you can post, such as this one
Oh........
Why would they hurt ranger like that
This is an upgrade for Ranger, mechanically
Old-flavor Hunter's Mark required some canny selection at the start of a campaign, and relied more than a bit on shining in some of the outdoor exploration parts of a campaign, which is not everybody's cup of tea. New-flavor versions are much more versatile.
I'll freely admit I miss some of the old ranger flavor. But if you're using 2024 rules, that's how it works now
what advancement type is mostly used milestone or xp
It depends from DM to DM. As a player, it's not something you need to worry about
Anyone a DM who can answer a question? I intend on making an illusion Wizard who uses the essentially no damage no CC Illusion Spells in combat to Intimidate/Deceive/Perform at the enemy to make his much weaker presence on the battlefield have an effect. Firstly, is this something that is allowed, and would be encouraged over say "JUST CAST FEAR OR CONFUSION"? and Secondly what would you guys advise the check would be, say "I make a giant skeleton behind me and announce "Incredible Necromancer Death Beam!!" to essentially BLUFF a reaction, would that be a Deception check, Performance or Intimidation? Or situation specific? Thanks for any info! x
Hello! Unfortunately, we really can't answer that question. Because spells like Major Image or Silent Image don't say they automatically make an enemy act in a certain way, then it's up to the DM to decide how a creature reacts to an illusion appearing.
That is to say, the person to ask if this idea is going to be workable in your campaign is your DM!
We were talking about this a little earlier: #dm-discussion message
As always, your table may vary. Best to run ideas with illusions past the DM before you spring them mid-session, so you're both clear on expectations.
Whats your best suggestion though? Would the DM being practical probably just do a perception check and then say "They all dont buy it?" and if thats so, what if they fail? They take one attack at it and miss? or They all have different reactions based on wisdom? Im interested. haha
Well that's the thing, right? I can tell you what I might do in my campaign, but that's not really going to help you in your campaign.
Talk to your DM about it. Get a feeling for how they run their encounters, their enemies, and their expectations about the effects of magic.
My take: an illusionist can probably justify using an illusion to perform the Help action at a distance, situation depending. The target of the effect may get to make a Wisdom save. Possibly the caster might have to make a skill check to make it specifically convincing.
See, I wouldn't run it like Mr Smith at all.
Not to say that his way is wrong, but DMs vary pretty wildly when it comes to things that aren't written in the book
Illusions can be tricky because you have so much scope, so chatting about what you have in mind with your DM is pretty essential.
Quite true, Mr Bones.
how would you run it? im interested.
I'd base it on passive arcana checks by opponents, and contextual evidence based on if those creatures are used to fighting mages
(DC 10+ spell level?)
-# DC = however likely it is that a mage can summon a huge skeleton
Interesting. Could you not argue though that hypothetically in the world of Magic and Mages, even skilled mages would still be able to innovate. i.e. Even powerful mages themselves unless they could immediately identify it as an illusion, that they could be worried they're seeing a powerful mage who is about to hit them with a new spell they haven't seen before? Only for it to be a bluff.
Well that's the thing. Of course you can argue any point. But the only person worth arguing it with is your DM.
i suppose you could argue its like a skilled fighter knowing the other person has no skill or anything before the fight even begins.
Collaborate with your DM.
I dont have no DM, im just running an idea that excites me.
If you're just looking for more general chatting about what could work, or how people might run something, #dnd-discussion might be the better place.
ok cheers. Wheres the best place to go to look for a DM/ Group

Hello, I'm new to d&d but I don't have any friends so I was wondering if anyone wanted to make a campaign on role 20. I'm not a good dm so a dm is welcome.
Hey there! Check that message just above.
Does anyone know if your Proficiency Bonus go up by what it shows each level, or is it what it is at the level displayed For example Level 1 = +2, Level 2 = +2, so now is your Bonus still +2 or is it +4?
The chart shows what it is at each level. So the bonus becomes +3 at level 5, +4 at level 9, and so on.
Thanks!
Can someone help with this? Using green flame blade as a warlock. On a hit, does it do regular weapon damage plus gfb damage or is it just the gfb damage? Weapon damage is 1d8 and gfb is 2d8 (2d8+5 for second target).
how hard is it to level up? does it go quick or is it really hard to get lvl 20
That depends on the game and DM; it's not a standardized process. It's probably a lot of time assuming you start at level 1.
It depends on gm and how your leaving up. Most people use milestones
what is leaving up
leveling up
Don’t mind me on cellphone
Again it depends it can be every other session, 3 sessions ext
okay cool 2-5 sessions
Varies a lot by DM and what level you currently are
Lower levels tend to go pretty quick in my experience, while higher level it's gonna take lot longer
Okay so looking at Feats - I am a Rogue Assassin, but want to get the Fighting Style Feat
is this 2014 or 2024
How does one obtain this, or is this simply not doable for what I am.
My DM does a mix of both, I guess does it matter is a loaded question, can you answer for both?
2014- the fighting initiate feat, or by taking a level in fighter, or 2 levels in ranger,or paladin
2024 - same as above but no feat
So when I hit Level 4. I need to take a level as a Fighter instead of Rogue so I become a Level 4 Rogue, but then a level 1 fighter.
Okay I may be over thinking this. So as a Level 4 Rogue Assassin/Fighter - If I attack and have mastery of a Scimitar, 1D6 +3 Dex mod, NICK, sneak attack for 2D6 and then use Two Weapon Fighting, 2nd attack with Dagger 1D4 with NICK followed by a bonus action of hide. Is that feasible?
why not use 2 scimitars?
Need to still get a second one.\
oh lol
Or rather Can I have two scimitars?
I guess it would be the same as 2 daggers right?
(minus damage but concept the same)
Just to clarify on this message here. If you're a level 3 Rogue and you level up, multiclassing into Fighter, you become a level 3 Rogue + level 1 Fighter. Your Rogue level does not go up. This means that all your Rogue features are now a level behind what they could be.
And yes, you can hold a Scimitar in each hand.
But only if I take the Fighter class right or do I need to do that?
I apologize, was there a question associated with this? This is the newcomers channel, for helping new players understand the rules
Any character can wield two Scimitars, and Rogues are proficient in them to start.
Hi everyone, could someone help me create a plasmoid in d&d beyond? if you have spelljammer of course
Oh man so I do not really need to take fighter for the two weapon feat.
That was meant for char discussion
Mb
Okay. so as a Level 4 Rogue Assassin - If I attack and have mastery of a Scimitar, 1D6 +3 Dex mod, NICK, sneak attack for 2D6 and then use , 2nd attack with Dagger 1D4 with NICK followed by a bonus action of hide. Is that considered a valid attack?
Yup. Action to attack twice, hopefully one of them hits so you activate sneak attack, then use your bonus action to Cunning Action hide.
Love it. Now I just need to find another Scimitar or buy one.
25 gold!
("When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn."?)
Nick property, in this case
Ahh.
anyone can do dual wielding its just the fighting style thing makes it a bit stronger
you can do the 2 weapon stuff without taking levels in fighter
Help! I have no idea what I'm doing!!
I'm attempting to create a homebrew campaign for my friend where I will also DM for them. But the thing is that I hardly ever play D&D!
I have no idea where to start, how to operate Roll20, how to balance, write or even play a campaign!
Is there any guide, tutorial or reference from which I could base myself so I'm not just drifting aimlessly in trying to figure all of this out?!
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

I have the DMG, and I'll have a look at the free rules too.
But- there's a lot I still don't understand about actually creating a campaign. Is that listed in the rules too?
Furthermore, operating Roll20 is still very strange to me. I mostly don't understand the commands and "stat block linking". It's all very overwhelming.
if this is your first time playing as a dm, i highly recommend a prewritten adventure
Please, where can I find them?
And, thank you for the recommendation.
you can either buy a physical book or buy them through dnd beyond
Ah yes!
Although I would still like to learn exactly how to create one specifically for the purposes of running it for my friend, if push comes to shove, I will purchase one.
I would also like to ask for suggestions from any DM willing to share their experience in running homebrew campaigns- or somewhere else I could learn.
In any case, thank you for the information.
#homebrew and #dm-discussion would be great places to get feedback on hombrew and DMing
I was sent here from homebrew.
But I will give the other chat a try too.
Thank you.
How do proficiencies work
i understand they make the thing you pick better but how exactly
you add your proficiency bonus, which scales based on your level
starts at +2, works up to +6 by level 20
so when i do the action that involves the skill i add to the roll?
yes; any time you take an action using a skill you have proficiency in, you add the bonus
I'm creating a cleric who will become a Plague priest
I wanted to know how divine channeling works and if the sponsorship of an evil God can change the patterns that are in the player's handbook.
My gods are Talona, myrkull, bhaal and loviatar
your Channel Divinity options change based on your subclass of choice
Cancer priest
not the god you worship; your subclass kind of serves as an archetype (so a Death domain cleric could serve any number of gods)
Death domain
And divine interventions?
Im totally noob at cleric class
the nature of divine intervention is quite interpretative, so consult your DM about that one
Are you using 2014 or 2024 rules?
Divine Intervention works differently between them. As does Channel Divinity
Idk
Anyone Will work, my DM don't care much about Editions As long as the game is fun
Well, neither specifically changes just because your God is evil or not
But the 2014 version of Divine Intervention has more leeway for asking for God for stuff besides spells
I'd recommend reading the cleric class in both versions of the free rules and seeing which you like better
If your DM doesn't care
It's just that what I found about these things in the book are related to healing.
It makes no sense for a plague priest to cure
they see plagues as the cure no?
In terms of changing the actual mechanics, you'd have to talk to your DM about homebrewing something
The rules in the book are the rules as they exist
Yes, but even then it would hurt other players rather than help logically speaking.
But a plague priest already sounds like it may be a homebrew subclass
Because that's not a thing that exists in official rules
It's like cancer mage, but with cleric instead sorcerer
Like I said. Not an official thing
Which means you can probably just talk to your DM about getting some sort of damage Channel Divinity option. There are examples from other cleric subclasses
I just don't know how to do it to be balanced.
But I will try
the dm will help! ^^
You can look at something like Light cleric as an example
Does anyone know how to rotate the maps in D&D beyond? I really need to be able to rotate the maps to fit my game table
#ddb-support might be able to help
I don't quite understand how to looking for a group thing works, anyone got tips?
Hey I'm new to all of this... Was hoping to get on a beginners game as it were, is there somewhere we post to look for groups?
Looking-for-players is where DMs advertise their adventures. They need people to apply.
Looking-for-dm is where players and existing groups in need of a DM advertise themselves.
Looking-for-community is where folk with existing Discord servers or forums advertise themselves for new members.
id recommend going to a local gamestore personally
im doing that tmr for my first game!
have fun! Do feedback how it goes!
Thank you
Guys im new to dnd and don't know how to really play can someone help me out?
Would really appreciate it if someone could help

Hello

Idk if they are available though #find-a-game
Hey if its any help I'm playing a plague cleric in my campaign rn and I can give some advice. Firstly you need to figure out your character, why are they a cancer cleric? Can they still use healing spells and then how do they work? For me I have mine as more of filling a wound with bacteria and swelling it up before making them to normal cells. Also what are your goals in life and what do you want to achieve with this character?
(If you have any more specific questions dm me personally)
Hello I am new to dnd, well the dm part of it! 😁 I look forward chating with you all and making new friends!!!!!!
If you'd like to talk DM shop with other DMs, we have #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building
And welcome to the server!
Hi I'm new to dnd and wanted to learn how to play it looking forward to chatting with you about it and thanks for the help in advance
There is a few videos you can watch in this discord but is there any specific questions like how to start character creation?
Sure! Pick a class, species and background. For ability scores, use the Standard Array option.
For assigning your ability scores, I suggest the highest to be:
- Spellcaster: casting stat.
- Melee focus: Strength or Dexterity.
- Ranged: Dexterity.
If you've got a feature like unarmoured defence, prioritise whatever that says. Minimum of 10 in Constitution, rock on.
All the information you need is here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
In my experience I always find it easier and more fun to come up with a character and then try to incorporate it into dnd. So before you look at any class you already have a concept you would like to run

Hey yellow
Hello!
Oh sure, you bring your own ideas! But for a newcomer, starting off by looking at what's on offer is an easier first step.
I would say it’s easier to let them run their imagination wild and them convert it to one of the classes, not saying that letting them know what’s on the table is bad just that it can be a bit overwhelming for some.
(Like when I create a character I always come up with something fun and then see how I can do it in game)
But what happens when they want to play something that isn’t supported by game mechanics
Not the person you asked directly, but I'll do my best to both explain that there isn't anything that does that directly, but say somethng to the effect of, "This is as close as I can get, doing X, Y, and Z bits of reflavoring."
I think it's better for them to know what the classes are because it doesnt feel good for the dm to go "no that's not mechanically supported" like 20 times, or end up with something that has mechanics that don't reflect the flavor you want very well
"I'll have the goulash." "Sir, this is a Wendy's."
Well, you can flavor the soda in such a way that...
There are merits to any of the approaches. And even when they've got a clear vision where something isn't an obvious fit, with a bit of guided questioning you can sometimes get to the core "what's important" of the vision and help them develop that. (Edit for clarity)
theres a lot of ways to go about it
Yup. And some methods will make more sense to different people than others.
i made my first ever character and i was hoping to share it with you all but i dont have image perms
You could screenshot it and put on imgur. Share a link (with a quick description) in #character-discussion . Or if it's a sheet you've made in D&D Beyond you can get a sharing link - just make sure to go to settings and switch it to public visibility.
alright
Howdy, I am still technically new to Dnd, and I’m having trouble finding a campaign and I was wondering where are good places to look?
@harsh fjord has a fantastic resource linked in their bio.
Thank you
I’m kinda confused with the format of the player handbook because it describes reactions but it doesn’t actually say what does or doesn’t count as a reaction, and I don’t know if I’m looking in the wrong spot or smthn or just misunderstanding
There is no general list because it's open ended. A thing will say that it is a reaction. The reaction entry just describes it in general terms and gives the general rules.
For example, some spells have a casting time of a reaction (like Shield). It wouldn't make sense to list them all in that entry.
Let's use an example, the Interception feat, which is something that a Fighter can pick at level 1:
When a creature you can see hits another creature within 5 feet of you with an attack roll, you can take a Reaction to reduce the damage dealt to the target by 1d10 plus your Proficiency Bonus.
Ohhhhhh okay
In this case, it's a reaction because it says it is, and it tells you the circumstances under which you can use it
Got it thank you
A Readied action in combat will also use your Reaction, if the trigger condition is met.
Can a readied action be something like getting attacked and attacking back
Yup
i need help im new to dnd

Hello Hello!! New here and to D&D I am very much looking into finding a new group game somewhere where i dont feel like the only outsider... but honestly I'll take anything, I have never role played before but I am excited to try in a safe space. Name is Mike, or Klowney here on discord and PSN, but I just used a bot to help me create my first character...

I made my first today as well, a Dragonborn Druid named Arflane Scorchek. Even doing just that excited me lol

can anyone walk me through an example game? im not sure how the game works exactly combat wise

You can try the link above for a pretty brief and simplified rundown of most of the game's mechanics
oh cool

Heyo
do I need to buy a bunch of those big books to play? or is that unique to the DM?
Nope. You can play with as little as the free basic rules. While the options are limited, all of the rules needed to play the game are included as well as some monsters to use.
The books contain additional options for players and DMs as well as pre-written stories if you don’t want to make one up yourself.
I would buy the players handbook digital and then the phyiscal book cause the digital is broken down really well for quick look up but having the phyiscal book helps least me digest it better
ugh I need to work on my solo adventure world I want it to be more campaign then one shot
gotcha thanks
or find a west marsh type discord server and alot of the server owners own most the digital books
Sad Robut is correct. At minimum all you need is the Free Rules, found in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play . Buying the PHB will mainly just unlock a few extra character options (i.e. more subclasses, species, and backgrounds). If you wanted to preview content without a DM or buying a book I recommend checking your local library, who often have 5e books available
For fighter (level 8), is there an melee attack that can attack several targets or a radius attack? Thinking of ROTK shenanigans
i use a glaive
There's Battlemaster's Sweeping Attack manouver
Might be better to ask in #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion though, specific builds aren't so nuch a newcomer topic
Neat, thanks
why cant i post in looking for DM?
Have you read #find-a-game for instructions on how to post there
I need help

I need help with stats For a Dragonborn dwarf berserker with a hammer and axe that can channel the elements
Asap
Pls
im down. im still a noob so ill need to ask a lot of shit lol
Hi there. Atm I am a bit overwhelmed with my first adventure. I am a darf fighter with moderate rolls (AC17, 16Str, 17Con). Normally I am whielding the Battleaxe of Warning. In our lates encounters though, my mates all hit extremely hard (10+ dmg) and creeps are focussing me.
Its becomming kind of frustrating, all I can do is having my face bashed in. Standing there and waiting for our Bard(Crossbow), Sorc(Bow of Vengance) and Cleric (with a Flame Tongue Mace) to finish them.
I mean, if I was able to really take the damage, and taunt them to focus on me, that would be OK, but at the moment, my 44 life vanish quickly, when attacked by 3 orcs at the same time.
Any ideas, on how I would be able to do more for my party and to regain some of the fun it was in the beginning?
Maybe swap magic weapons with the cleric
The party should be crowd controlling so you don’t get overwhelmed
Is a berserker a soldier
No. Soldier is a background. Barbarian is your class.
Berserker is a subclass of barbarian.
Ok
Hey yall
i just finished my first character! ( i think... ) can someone tell me what's next? id like to play
Hey there. Next is the hardest part: finding a group that is suitable for you. You can check out the lfg system we have here: #find-a-game #looking-for-players and if you need more advice, have a look at the amazing guide iamrazorwing put together: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
I have 75 Gold Coins and 145 Silver Coins to my Name. Do you know a suitable way, I could spend that to strengthen me? Maybe a (magical) Shield for more AC or something alon that line?
You could probably buy some useful adventuring gear with that, depending on what your character wants to use. I'd check the Equipment section of the phb and look at the prices there.
Magic items are usually way more expensive than the coins your character has available and depends on if the DM makes them available for purchase in the first place.
I'm new to dnd and making a character from a video tutorial, can I get some help over a private screen share ?
Not knowing the set up but a big part of it is being vaguely tactical.
So if everyone is ranged, and the orcs aren't really that great at it. You find cover. The party does a fighting retreat and gets a turn of free damage off.
You don't ever really want to willingly put yourself in a situation where you're getting focus fired down for no real reason.
I see people do it a lot with stuff like zombies. There's 9 zombies, 1 primarily melee character.
The melee character is faster than the zombies, but charges in anyway, because they have a sword, everyone else stands where they are shooting stuff.
So now there's 1 guy in range of those 9 zombies on their turn so they're going to go after them, and half their hp gets chewed up.
Dodge, disengage etc. are all options available to you. Casters ought to be laying down control spells, so on and so forth. If a party just goes into a we punch them, they punch us, we punch them style fight, that occasionally leads to you getting punched really hard by something good at punching.
is there a site where i can find all feats across all sourcebooks and adventures? plus the prequisites?
Not without paying for the books that those feats come in - not everything is provided in the free rules or SRD.
But if you own the books on DnDBeyond, you can view them there.
Or if you own the books on Roll20, you can view them there.
im on dndbeyond rn trying to find all feats, i have a bunch of books with content sharing. can i still see them then?
You should be able to - in which case go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats and you'll see all the feats you have access to.

Hello i am new to dnd and would like to make a home made version in a discord server with my friends, i already have role bots in the discord server but i needed an HP calculator or something bot to keep track of players HP and I can’t seem to find any, the very few i invited the bots were offline. Can someone help me?
Avrae apparently can do this, though I do wonder why players can't track this themselves.
Yeah, tracking stuff on your character sheet is the responsibility of the players
How can Avrae do this? I tried but it looks very complicated, as for doing it myself there’s going to be 15 players which is going to be a bit hard to manage alone
New DM 15 players yeah that’s a lot
That is an absurd number of players. I don't use Avrae, but you can get more info in #ddb-avrae-help.
Uhh it isnt exactly dnd but it had dnd elements such as dices and stuff for the combat thats why
Ty
Then you want #non-dnd-topics
This channel is for newcomers to D&D
My bad srry😭🙏
s'all good

Is there any attacks that can do AOE attacks for fighter?
There's an alternate rule I know of that does, but if you want a sure thing, Battle Master Fighter gets the Sweep manoeuvre
It's extremely unlikely enemies will be grouped up enough for you to get more than two next to each other at a time anyway
my DM does
he puts enemy soldiers in a formation wiht a grid map
Some fighter subclasses give you access to AOE damaging abilities. There are species options and feats which can do so as well
which subclass?
hello, I'm kinda new to the game and im creating a new character for a new campaign in dnd 3.5, I want to create a character that is hybrid race between human and dragonborn (lesser) but im not finding any info on the lesser dragonborn about class abilities, power ups etc. any info on where I should see that?
Welcome. This server is primarily focused on D&D 5e. If you want to discuss older editions, the #dnd-elder-editions channel is where you can do so. The folks there will likely have the resources you are looking for. The other channels on this server are restricted to 5e discussion only
Arcane Archer has the Bursting Arrow ability. Battle Master has the Sweeping Attack maneuver. Eldritch Knight gets spells, so you can cast an AOE spell.
okay sorry
And if you ware using the 2024 rules, you can use the Cleave mastery property of certain weapons to hit more than one target with your attack
No need to apologize. No harm done
Not realy fighter just get more attacks to Deal with more things
2 attacks 💀
4 with Action surge
If you go for polearm master and great wapon master you will deal a lot of dammag
Great wapon master is realy nice as kind of aoe cause if you kill somthing you can attack again with your bonus action
Ans you just get a lot more dammag
i just wanted to learn dnd, will i be able to play after finishing this playlist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=203ahi2zuE0&list=PLfS8QgUdeGYr-v1QfBH4x_diAZ7SGNFj4&index=4)
its from the learning channel
You will be able to play without any knowledge if your table is good😁
But the playlist probably wount hurt
is there a channel in this discord i could use to make a team or watch someone else play as to get the feel for it?
There are some youtube champagnes but there you will get a to good picture of the game basikly
Action surge only adds 1
Oh my bad
But still if you look into feats more you will see fighters can also do some great dammag
You should look for a group that is either new themself or open to teaching you the game
You can not realy learn it by just watching stuff
ah
But if you have time watching youtube will help so they dont have to explain everything
Do you plan on starting to play with friends or online?
online
This game doesn't exist in my part of the world so online is my only option.
hi so i cant realy find any information about those little black dots next to thinges like percoption(wis) for dragonborn's so can anyone help?
It means you're proficient
What exactly are you looking at? A dragonborn might well be proficient in Perception if you're looking at a pregenerated character
In both rule sets
no im trying to make my first character
So, then, presumably you're looking at this sheet, right?
https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/DnD_5E_CharacterSheet_FormFillable.pdf
What level is your character? If they’re 5th or above Action Surge will net you 2 more attacks for a total of 4.
not exactly but it have preatty much the same thinges
It might help if you link the sheet you’re using then
Well then what Ratatoskr said applies. You tick one of those boxes if your character is proficient with that skill.
You pick proficiencies during character creation, whenever something like your race or your background or your class says that you can pick them.
ok thanks
Today Ive learned you can play a gnoll now (exploring everon)
Lots of options among third-party creators, but that's probably better for #third-party rather than the newcomers channel.
Actully Exploring Everon is a WTC thing from the dm guild I think. I kinda was surprise dby that lol
Wait it does so i knew it corectly🥳 🎉
Yep Action surge give you another attack action so...If you have extra attack ues
It isn't, though. See https://keith-baker.com/tag/exploring-eberron/.
Is it official content?
No. This is not produced by WotC and it does not match all previous canon sources. This is Keith’s personal view of Eberron and what he does in his Eberron campaigns.
And even so, that's still not about helping folks learn the basics of the game!

What is the best way to find a DM? I've tried looking in the lfg but I haven't seen any that has caught my eye.
Keep looking, be patient, spread your search wide (try looking also on other servers, forums, and websites). See also the various D&D servers posting in #looking-for-community
(Become the DM 😉 )
Also a valid option!
DM'ing is just a different way to play D&D and it can be quite fun - you don't run player characters, but you do get to set the stage, describe the scene, and run the NPCs and monsters and challenge your players and see how their characters respond and handle things, working all together to tell a fun story.
Hello everyone, I’d like to preface this message by stating, I have never played a game of D&D in my life. The main reason for this is social anxiety, but not in the kind that I’m afraid to talk to new people, rather I don’t want to be that newbie that needs to their hand held the entire game. I’m extremely interested in playing as a warlock but for some reason I simply can’t wrap my head around how they work, or even how to play D&D. Is warlock a class i should wait to play until later to play? And am i just over complicating the entire game?
What parts of the Warlock class do you need some help with?
Off memory it’s the pacts i think, I’ve gone through D&D beyond and just experimented with creating a character, from what i understand the pact dictates the play style of your character. (Pact of tomes is more spell casting vs pact of blade is more melee) I’ve also seen a few videos stating that warlocks have a different way their spell slots work that restrict from using certain spells based on level.
Warlocks do have their own spell list so when you're picking spells, you use that one. They also only have limited spells slots based on your level and cast them at the highest possible level you can cast.
Pacts can change how you play that Warlock. They also can restrict or grant additional pact features as you level.
It's like an additional level of flavour with abilities included
Oh wow okay that’s way simpler than how the people on YouTube explained it, thank you so much!
Happy to help 😄

Hello all! Started playing DND back in 2017.. but I've loved RPGs since I was a wee lad.
I am just another geek trying to escape reality in a mimic.
Here to discuss all things DND, as well as fleshing out my character builds that I want to run. Also BG3.
I have not engaged in Dungeons & Dragons activities since my high school years. I am currently interested in finding a well-organized and immersive campaign to join. Could you please provide information on any communities accepting new members?
Hi I've never played dnd
The core rules are free on d&d’s website. I would recommend starting off by reading that and watching videos of other people explaining it AND playing it, that way you get a really good grasp of it
Alright
If you have any questions, just post them here!
You play on Xbox
Alright
Hi everyone. I am a dad in Colorado looking to join a D&D game. Online or inperson is fine with me. Any tips would be a huge help. I have not played since I was a kid.
North or south? There may be game stores depending on your area. (though no specifics per server rules)
Otherwise, the looking for channels are where people post about games on this server
Go to #find-a-game
Thank you.
Of course!
Quick question. According to dndbeyond, as I understand it, as a fighter, I gain a certain amount of second wind, according to the fighter features table. As a Level 4 fighter, I should have 3 second winds (?per short rest?). On my character sheet, I only have 1 checkbox though. Did I misunderstand?
To my understanding, fighters only get one use of second wind per short or long rest. Parties usually only have 2 short rests at most during an in-game day
I think you may have mixed it up with the amount of dice you use to heal yourself with
You have a limited well of physical and mental stamina that you can draw on. As a Bonus Action, you can use it to regain Hit Points equal to 1d10 plus your Fighter level.
You can use this feature twice. You regain one expended use when you finish a Short Rest, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
When you reach certain Fighter levels, you gain more uses of this feature, as shown in the Second Wind column of the Fighter Features table.
Ah, my mistake then. Yes, you gain more uses of it over time, but you regain one use after a short rest. Apologies, I must have misremembered it
And I have mistaken the regain of only 1 use. But, as a level 4 fighter, I should be able to use it 3 times a fight and regain 1 sr / all lr, correct? So it must be a bug, there only is one checkbox on my dndbeyond character sheet?
I don’t use dnd beyond so IDK. I would look it up if necessary. Gaining another use of second wind doesn’t seem right at level four since that’s usually when you get your feat/ASI, unless I’m once again remembering incorrectly
Howdy! I just begun a campaign with some friends using DNDBEYOND website; yet I am still confused an need a small run down on how to contruct a character that isn't clunky and how to begin!
I recommend checking this out.

I think I'd probably prefer online at first though
So what is force damage?? If I were to describe what it is what would it be like?? Like I used hunter’s mark on an enemy and I attack it I do normal damage + force damage from hunter’s mark.
Here is a list and short descriptions of damage types:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#DamageTypes
Force damage specifically is pure magical energy.
So you could think of it like your ranger imbuing their arrow with raw magic.
I like my force damage to be raw magic. It was never meant to be seen by mortal eyes. It's the lifeblood of the multiverse, and it burns. An eldritch blast often feels concussive, sure, but how about a Dalek's ray? That's a disintegrate effect for sure.
(Well, ish. Theirs leave bodies, the spell leaves dust).
I need some help
My dm allowed me to have a cat via find familiar. He says that i can’t choose the class and race but i can choose the background. Does that imply that if I chose for example outlander, my cat would have 10gp and a hunting trap?
I just want to know what effects apply for my cat
My character is a wizard
It’d be best to ask them. Familiars don’t inherently have species/class/backgrounds, and cats are already a normal option for the spell
He said my race is just cat, my class needs to be familiar, but background is blank and i can choose it
This is very much sounding like homebrew (or potentially a misunderstanding of core D&D rules/mechanics).
You said your DM let you have a cat via Find Familiar
This sounds more like your DM is letting you be a cat
Those are completely different things and the latter is not supported by the rules, would be significant homebrew, and as stated, well outside the scope of this channel
Then why are you talking about your cats race/class/background
Rules as written no, you don't "make a character" for your cat
It just uses the cat stat block
He let me
Then that would still be
not supported by the rules, would be significant homebrew, and as stated, well outside the scope of this channel
Familiars are not player characters - they do not have classes
There’s some things that are nonsensical then. Familiar isn’t a “class”
The specifics are going to have to be worked out with your DM
See the spell "Find Familiar": https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2097-find-familiar
Yes, he told me i cant have a class or race, but is can have a background
And it does use the default cat stat bloc
OOps
Again, you will need to ask your DM for specifics, since Familiars don’t inherently get backgrounds.
As mentioned a few times now, that's not within the scope of this channel
Ok i will
Good morrow friends how arth thou this wonderful frigg day
