Most of the player types are kind of what they say on the tin. Couple subtle distinctions: the Actor/Method Actor tends to be most interested in their own character; the Storyteller is more into big-picture story things. Explorer wants to know what’s behind every door/on every bookshelf; Problem Solver looks at everything as a puzzle to be solved. Your problem solvers are the folks who dig figuring out how to circumvent a potential combat through clever application of something else.
Treacherous-looking log bridge over a river with bloodthirsty fantasy piranhas? Icy Terrain to create your own bridge that’s safer. Doors of Moria? Problem-solver bait.
Hi im new too dnd i would like too join in on a campain

Yall, I have now made a map
How many spells does a lv 3 Warlock have? I'm confused how it works compared to other classes I've seen
Atleast the earth and water, I just now remembered I will add forrests and kingdoms, villages and such
I now dont really understand how I forgot that
Warlocks are a little funky in their spell loadouts. Let me first ask: Are you talking about all the spells they know, or just what they have for spell slots?
Ths spell slots, I was comparing it to the bard features chart and it's different
OK. So, most spellcasters refresh all their used spell slots on a long rest - basically, an 8 hour-long good night's uninterrupted sleep. Warlocks, on the other hand, generally have 2 spell slots available (1 slot at level 1; 3 slots at certain high levels), but recharge them all on a short rest -- say, an hour or so out to eat, clean up, use the euphemism, and the like.
The other spellcasting classes therefore have a larger number of spell slots, allocated to specific spell levels (at up to 4 slots per level, if memory serves). A warlock's 2 spell slots are always at whatever the highest possible spell level available.
So, at 3rd level, a warlock only has 2 spell slots, but they're both level 2, and they get them back with a short rest. In contrast, a bard will have 4 first-level spell slots and 2 2nd level spell slots, per long rest.
So Warlocks have less spell slots but recharge them faster during short rests?
Right. And, other casters (usually) have the option to "upcast" a spell or not - that is, to use a slot higher than the minimum spell level slot for it. A Warlock can't pull their punches, so to speak.
So a Warlock at lv 3 has 2 spell slots, but they can be either lv 2 or 1?
Nope. They have 2 spell slots, and they're both level 2. No casting a 1st level spell with a 1st level slot for Warlocks after level 3.
Are you aware of the difference between Spell Slots and your known spells?
Whoops think i confused them
I meant a lv 3 Warlock can have 2 prepared spells (plus 3 Cantrips)
But both prepared spells can be any lv?
A level 3 warlock can have 4 spells prepared, plus 3 cantrips.
Ohhh. Okay, so then so a lv 3 Warlock can have 4 prepared spells but they can be all be lv 2?
I think what throws me off it the "slot level" compare to other classes
At level 3, a warlock knows 3 cantrips that they can use whenever. Then, per short rest, they have 2 uses of a "leveled spell", which will be used at level 2 no matter what. Those 2 uses come from a choice of 4 known spells. No more than 2 of those can be 2nd level spells, from the 2nd level spell table.
Every spell they cast will use a 2nd level spell slot, but at level 3 they can only prepare a maximum of two 2nd level spells
this is because when you level up, you can learn 1 new spells, and replace 1 of the spells you already know. At level 2, you know three 1st level spells, so at level 3, you gain 1 new spell, and have the option of replacing one of your old ones
By comparison: A bard will know 2 cantrips that can be used at any time. They'll have a "pool" of 6 spells for their leveled slots - at least four that are level 1 spells, and one or two that are level 2 spells. Between long rests, they can use 4 1st level spell slots that must be used on their pool of level 1 spells, and two level 2 spell slots that could be used on anything.
Warlocks are definitely on the higher end of the complexity scale because of how Pact Magic is different from normal spellcasting and how the invocation choices shape the character.
Thank you so much for the help, hopefully this answers everything 🙏

Hello
Hello! my name is Nathan and I'm really interested in getting into dnd! I love creative writing and storytelling so I think this is something right up my alley. I have almost no Idea on where to start. Rn I'm reading through the rule book and trying to figure out how to create a character. If someone would like to teach me or even have me be an "apprentice" I would love to meet ya. I don't mind if your in a campaingn already I could watch an learn. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Hi all, a newbie to d&d looking to get into d&d post-college! My local groups are full and was hoping I could find people to play with here. Where can I find beginner groups to join???
Check #find-a-game
Can u play dnd online
Yes, that's what a lot of people did during the pandemic.
Most people use Roll-20 as thier vtt of choice, some use Theather or the mind or some other alt
Have a look in #looking-for-players but don’t post your age server #rules
Ok thank you
Won't do it again hehe
Would you recommend using dnd beyond or a physical character sheet when playing? For the latter, do you just use a pencil to write and erase hit points and such or do you keep track of those elsewhere?
You'd use whichever method the group allows, but having a digital sheet like beyond definitely makes things a lot easier to keep track of, so it's really down to your own preference
And you could do that for hit points or on a separate paper to keep track if you don't want to keep wiritng and erasing, there aren't any specific rules for how you do it. A sheet is mainly for helping you keep track of things easier
Thanks. We are allowed to use whatever we please. I like the idea of pen and paper, but my writing is so ugly and I would get ink all over as a lefty, so I might just use beyond
I might get a small whiteboard
I'm looking to get into DND
Is anyone graceful enough to show me the ropes?
I have NO idea how to play >:]

Hey everyone
Yeeurr
hows things
Hey, can anyone tell me how playing online works? like is everything just done verbally on an online call?
You can also do text. It depends on the specific setting of the game you are playing
oh ok
verbally and often with something called a virtual tabletop. virtual table tops have dice rolling tools, a way for the dm to show you a map if needed, and other stuff
some also do text but those are rare
I’m an advocate for pencil & paper character sheets at the actual table (unless virtual), teaching hp by crossing out with a single line and writing the new total, erasing a minimum number of times per adventure.

Hi, Ive always been intrested in DnD and now my friends are expressing interest, ive never seen or watched a game and want to be the DM for my group as it seems cool and no one in our group has played. Any advice? I want to get into it as easily as possible but I understand its a complex game

Unfortunately many of us don't have time/bandwidth to teach people one on one so the more self-learning you do (read the free rules, watch D&D videos on YouTube/Twitch, go through the stpes to make a character sheet), the easier it will be for us to assist.
Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)
Thanks, I got a small whiteboard which I think will work great for HP tracking and such
wich dnd should i download? i have steam
Hi, I'm a new GM trying to understand the "chase" rules in the Dungeon Master's Guide. Could someone provide an example of how a chase might work? I have a chase scene in mind but could use some help fleshing it out.
D&D is a tabletop role playing game, not a computer/video game. That said there are video games based off of D&D like Baldurs Gate 3.
Try asking this in #dm-discussion
Folks there can help explain it.
Will do, thanks!
I do recommend to play as a player before you be a dm to understand a bit and get some ideas. Just what I think is best
Sure! Check out the following youtube playlist. It was very helpful for me when I got started with DMing. It's not as hard as it may sound and the only way to improve is to do it and be open to feedback!
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
You can watch/listen to some games on YouTube, Twitch, and/or your podcast platform of choice. Read the rules and #learn-to-play. Sign up for a learn-to-play session offered through the virtual weekends (see the server’s Events tab). Check out https://howtogm.guide.
That should be more than enough to get going!

for a spear it says range 20/60 what does that mean exactly
Normal attack roll for range 1' to 20' but disadvantage attack roll from 21' to 60' range.
Hello everyone. Horcharr, new to the Dnd world I don't know much about it having never played with Dnd rules. I am basically an old Heroquest player and for several years I have taken up the hobby by devoting myself 100% to the creation of scenery, leaving little room for the game. I am here to better know the universe of Dnd , it will certainly be very useful to help me in the creation of my latest decor. Thank you and look forward to it.

D&D isn't a video game where you can just drop into a multiplayer match. Scheduling between the Dungeon Master (DM) and players is the biggest hurdle. It may take days or weeks for the first game session to occur.
I know bc I tried to play a game with my friends and we had 5 players and the dungeon master said "it will take 2 years for me to do the whole story line" then he said no
Well then can we play a round I can give you a setting
Yes, some campaigns could take a year or more. My campaign has been going on for three years and will at least another two years.
No just to think of what to do
You read and learn the rules. I provided the links above.
Not "on this game will last for years" he said "it will take me 4-5 years to think of the beginning of it"
And I did
Okay, this isn't really about learning how to play D&D.
Sry
Do you know how to play?
This channel is to help new players learn how to play the game.
We can't help you with your DM's decisions.
Let's take a moment - many of us don't have time/bandiwdth to teach folks D&D one on one.
We ask that you read #learn-to-play and the resources pinned in the channel here and then if you have specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)
We also don't host D&D games on this server
I did
Please don't spam reacts/emojis
Ok
D&D isn’t normally plug & play; going for a “round or two” isn’t feasible in most circumstances (unless, say, you’re trying to test a round of combat as part of rules or build practice). That being said it is also unusual to take multiple years for a DM to organize a game.
I would follow OldMan’s advice and read through the rules until you feel like you have at least a halfway decent grasp on them. Of course, we’re also here to help for more specific questions.
I can think of a situation just sometimes my situations get dark
This isn't the channel for that.

If you're looking for a new D&D group/game to join, read #find-a-game carefully
Creating adventure scenarios is one part of the puzzle, but it is just the narrative element- you need to bridge it to some level of mechanics. You should perhaps go to #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building depending on the specifics of what you need help developing about your encounters.
Hi. I'm new to D&D but I've played some D&D based video games so I feel I have a basic understanding. I want to do online play but it looks like I need to commit to a VTT early on. So the burning question is: DnD Beyond or Roll20? My understanding is if you want to use elements from something like Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, you need to buy that from the VTT you're playing on. Is that correct? And can everyone at the virtual table use it or only me? Or is it only usable if the DM owns it? Is there a resource (blog, YouTube, etc.) that goes into this in detail? Thanks in advance.
Are you planning to DM? If not, you don't need a VTT. The DM decides which VTT to use if playing online.
Beyond that this question is better suited for #dm-discussion
No, I wouldn't dream of DM-ing until I had lots of experience as a player
Then you don't need to worry about finding which VTT to use.
So the supplemental material owned by the DM is usable by everyone in the campaign?
Potentially
It depends how the DM shares it. In person, sure. Online? Depends on the digital platform.
If the DM uses D&D Beyond, they need to have the Master Tier subscription to share their digital books with the players in their campaign.
Roll20 and Foundry VTTs have digital books the DMs could buy directly from their marketplace and in turn share with their players.
I think I understand. So if I'm hoping to use a particular supplement, I need to find a campaign by a DM who makes it available.
Or buy it yourself.
Don't join a DM's campaign just to use their books. That's very rude and inconsiderate.
Join to play, not borrow materials
DMs tend to front the cost of the games as it is and players are desperate to find DMs to play with.
I absolutely don't want to be rude or inconsiderate. I'm just trying to understand the mechanics of VTTs and supplemental materials.
Each VTT is different.
I use Foundry but my digital books are all on D&D Beyond.
Hey all I’m new here
Talking about VTT is beyond the scope of this channel anway.
Understood. Thanks for the info
Thanks, I'll look at that.
Hello everybody i am new to dnd and i offered to dm for a oneshot for my friend group. We wanted to use roll 20 to play but i noticed that during play testing with one of my friends that players were completely unrestricted(aka could move wherever they want, when trying to lock movement they could delete their old character token and make a new one, create lots of character tokens in general, draw all over the screen and spam in chat uncontrollably). I wonder if there are any ways to somewhat restrict them from doing these things
Yes, kick them because they're being a jerk.
Otherwise this is a Roll20 issue and as far as I know the VTT doesn't have a limitation for token movement.
so there is literally no other way to somewhat control the game?
First and foremost this is a behavioral problem on the part of your friend.
Tell your friend to knock it off.
What a VTT does or doesn't do isn't going to stop your friend from doing immature things. Remember as a DM you are suppose to have fun as well.
Thanks
This was mostly during play testing because we were seeing how much control the players have
I am sure we won't have any behavioural problems
Then no, Roll20 doesn't have movement restrictions or stopping people from spamming text.
Okay, thank you for your time
No, unless you have dynamic lighting enabled (sub perk) otherwise yeah...Your friend is a Probelm player and should be booted

The book tends to give a decent order, as does using D&D beyond
It can definitely be imposing at first
I created a character ! On dnd beyond and finished ... so now what lol
Read the rules.
yeah as much as i slander beyond it definitely helped me get started
Did yesterday.
Making a character is pointless if you don't know anything about the rules of hte game.
Okay, look for a game to join.
Tyvm
Yeah Most people will ask you to reroll the character since they need to see you roll and such sometimes
does anyone have room for 1? im new and dont even have a character, but i want to join because i played once on deployment and just wanna keep having fun
are there any roll 20 wizards? just need some help trying to figure out how to remove the Custom Class from the 2024 char sheet
Perhaps ask in the Roll20 Discord server? This channel is to help out those new tho the game.
oh i didnt know they had a roll20 disc server, thanks
Someone explain Westmarch and it's appeal?
What's up?
Its allows people to pick up and play Westmarch is more or less a bunch of dms all colabing with quests and so forth ansd people can play when they are able to
o7
essentially, it's freeform roleplay for a community. allows for much more freedom, many more player interactions, and collaboration efforts
it's a pretty good way to start as a beginner from my experience, and if you're too busy to do steady campaigns!
ahahh

Where do I make my character sheet?
Like,is there a certain website or do I just do that on paper or something??
Alright thanks
(Side note, even for homebrew stuff?? )
Alright,thanks a lot for that
New to D&D, but have a question around D&D Beyond. Trying to figure out what the difference between the free account and Hero Tier sub beyond the 6-character limit.
This page shows you what you get with the Hero tier: https://www.dndbeyond.com/store/subscribe
D&D Beyond questions are generally better for #ddb-support, just for future reference!
Thanks. That page didn't really make it clear what you don't get with Hero vs free only Hero vs Master.
Just found the answer via old reddit article, which is that free is "Ads Displayed, Up to 6 characters, cannot use public homebrew."
This is a wild time for me as a newcomer. Played every PnP RPG under the sun except for D&D in the 90s, then life intervened. Now I'm in my 50s, decided to take a look at D&D because of how pervasive it is in culture now.
Well, since it's never been more popular, there are plenty of resources to learn and find fellow players, so it's a good time to join!
Heyy

Hmm
Learn to play sessions?
Also i heard its better to use premade characters
As a starter
Depends on the game it may be offered but often if you making a character for the first time the book gives you suggestions and so forth
You can if you want
But most of the time the fm will ask you to make your own and will help you with your classes and stats not always but it’s there.
Hmm ok
Welp it will be a while before i play anygame
I dont wanna ruin it for other ppl by being a newb
Well the only numbers that matters are hp and +2,3,4
That’s what beginner friendly games are for, it’s to learn and be new. It’s ok to make mistakes or not know anything. Everyone starts somewhere
Where can i find these games?
Which one do i go to as a player?
Bolth work lfp isn the kne where dms are looking. And the other is you ware looking for a dm for somthing specific anywho.
Roll-20 is also good just look at the tags because most of them tend to be paid games.
Pardon?
That was a bot command.
Hello hello
hello hello!
Just started playing - I am a paladin with magic initiate feat. I assume I can cast the spell I picked from magic initiate at class lvl 1 , before I unlock spell casting?
Absolutely. Anyone can make an unarmed attack with their Action, only monks can also do it with a Bonus Action.
-# and dance bards but nevermind that
what would the dmg calculations be if I used it as an action and a bonus action with dexterity modifier as 3
It's the same. You use your martial arts die and add your Dex mod.
oh ok thank you so much 😄
for a pet, can i tell it to attack and move as my bonus action? or is it just one or the other
could be reading it wrong but in xanathar's it's only ONE thing i think
It depends on what sort of pet you mean. There are quite a few features and abilities in the game that give you something like a pet. The feature will specify what the pet can do.
Hello am very new to this and I don’t know how to start could someone tell me what I need to do

Few questions, really:
-
do I need physical dice or can I use online ones?
-
Can/Do people play over discord?
-
Whats the best version to play?
4.Whats the typical stance on homebrew?
- Are there distinct differences in playstyle depending on class?
hello and welcome all! We often recommend that folks get started by reading the links above. Don't feel in a rush to go through them all at once and when you have questions, you can ask here
I can't make a post on the "looking for players channel" and i am specifically on this server to "look for players" for an irl game since my last group has finally died after a slow death of unable to meet more and more. However do I become able to make ad posts on that channel?
- Unless a DM specifies, you can use online ones.
- Yes. A great many people use Discord to play, though a DM may have their own Roll20 (or another VTT) account that they want people to join and use for gameplay
- There is no best version though people have lauded 5th edition for being the easiest for new people to pick up and play.
- If you are new, typically we recommend you stay away from homebrew. Coming in as a player wanting to use their own Homebrew can make a lot of DMs less interested in accepting you for a game.
- Playstyle depends more on the player than the class they choose
you cannot post in the looking-for channels. We use a bot and a template to post there. Instructions are in #find-a-game
Thank you much
If you're looking for local players (e.g. for a local in person game) consider checking with your local game stores, book stores, libraries, and even Facebook. Our LFG channels are not really the best place to find local players as it's more geared for online groups and our server rules regarding not sharing personally identifying information can make it challenging.
Sweet thank you :3
I kind of know what kind of character I want to play as, but idk if it’s too derivative
a character is only really bad if it disrupts the game or impedes the fun of the rest of the players. Trying to be the main character in a videogame doesn't really work in D&D for example
Oh god no, I’d never try and be a main character
I wouldn't worry about it - every table is different and your "almost-ironman" artificer character may play very different in different D&D games.
But yeah, play nicely with others and you'll do fine.
Cuz I know you can be a paladin of the nicer gods, but I wanted to explore being a paladin of the more “evil” gods
Less Percy from VM and more Sith from Star Wars
You'd definitely want to run playing evil characters by your DM and the rest of the group.
D&D is more heroic fantasy focussed and usually assumes you're playing a "good" character (e.g. trying to help others).
But yes, playing an evil character is possible - just needs to align with the group and the kind of D&D game your group is running.
Oh yeah, like, I’m not gonna undermine the groups goals
Just might use less than heroic means to achieve them

Hello I am brand new to this brilliant game and I'm looking to learn how to play and play with people
Check out the links above.
Is there any Matt Mercer D&D campaigns people would recommend? I know he's well known in the D&D community and I would like to see hype!
To watch or to play?
Critical Role is near the end of Campaign 3.
Anyway, this channel is to help people learn about the game. Head on over to #critical-role-spoilers if you want to talk about the actual play series.
Hello! Im George, friends of mine and myself have started to dabble in D&D but are confused about some of the finer mechanisms in the game work together, such as calculating AC of monsters with damage and yeild results. If anyone is willing to talk to some noobs and give a little guidence it would be much appriciated. we are a group of 4-6 that started playing together.
I’m actually looking for online games to play. This game isn’t common on my country.
Just got into it and I really like the idea of playing I just haven’t played much
hi! i’m very new to D&D, my friends just helped me make a character sheet for a one piece campaign they are doing! i am a rogue yuan-ti sort-of homebrewed species, i kind of got the basics down, but if you have any tips or anything lmk! hope i can make some friends!!
If you want really good campaigns, try looking into paid games if you wanting a consistent game. If your not sure your gonna be able to be consistent try looking for a casual game.
little intro
I got a paid campaign that I'll be starting up once I got 4 - 6 players traveling across the multiverse
Hey folks, I’m Riley! I have been looking at D&D lore for a few years off and on, but yesterday I bought my first ever true DND book and now I want to begin playing games so that’s why I’m here🙂
hey all - gay guy in Vermont just learning. Made my first character on Dnd Beyond. Now I guess I find a group to join and start a campaign? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

#find-a-game is a start also hello from maine…
I want to play dnd but idk how and where to start
Hey Is the latest players handbook worth it? I like collecting things and I do appreciate the artwork I saw. I also learn better from physical text, however I’m not sure if there is a huge difference between the book and the free online resources
Oh sweet, thanks for the reply! Do you have the handbook? (Not calling you a newbie btw lol)
Oh sweet, I think I will be getting it
Since dnd is story telling oriented, does that mean that any class can be more powerful than another if the player chooses so? It’s not like typical classes where one class is obviously more powerful
some classes are outright better than others but it doesnt really come up unless youre trying to make your characters strong
dnd is primarily a roleplaying game so its just kinda whatever you find fun
Does the dm get to play or is he/she there as like a regulator/story teller
Ooooo
That’s fun
sometimes they do also make pcs to join the party but you definitely shouldnt do that until you have a lot of experience dming
Seems like DMs have a lot of pressure to make the game fun
It takes a lot of work, time, and money (DMs tend to be the ones who buy the books, software, miniatures, etc.).
Oh dms have to buy stuff ? I thought it was like every one brings their own supplies (I have no idea what supplies)
Players may be their own copies of the Player's Handbook but the DM buy DM-centric books like the Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, and adventure books.
generally the dm is the one with the books but players can get them too yeah
I'm a forever DM who DMs online so I paid for a D&D Beyond subscription so I can share my digital books with my players. That's a couple hundred bucks right there for the sub and books.
That’s so nice of you. Do they keep those books after the session is over?
Is the other stuff like “DLC”
D&D Beyond is a website. The players have access to the digital books I have as long as they're in my campaign. They don't download the books, only the site.
kinda yeah
you just need dice and character sheets to start but the game is a lot better with a tabletop and the phb (also tashas for the old rules)
how do you add custom race bonuses to dnd beyond ability scores
Dmpcs tend to be the killer of the majority of games unless done right. Which is rare
Can Clerics wear heavy armor or only Medium armor?
They are proficient (able to use without penalty) whatever armor their class description lists
With 2014 rules it’s dependent on what domain you choose
With 2024 rules it’s dependent on your choice of Divine Order
Wearing anything outside of that will incur them penalties to various d20 Tests and spellcasting
So it sounds like Med is my best bet
What ruleset are you using? And what domain are you going to be?
just a general ranger pet, like a wolf, the feature doesn't say anything, it's just under "actions" for the attacks; so does that mean if the ranger commands the pet to attack, it use's the ranger's action?
Let me ask in a different way: what ranger subclass are you? Are you using a spell to summon this pet?
It does totally depend on what mechanical game feature gave you this wolf.
For example, the Beastmaster Ranger has the following text:
[The beast] can move and use its Reaction on its own, but the only action it takes is the Dodge action unless you take a Bonus Action to command it to take an action in its stat block or some other action. You can also sacrifice one of your attacks when you take the Attack action to command the beast to take the Beast’s Strike action.
If the DM let you tame a pet without any mechanical game feature being involved, then ask your DM.
i am the dm, & there are 2 other dms at the table that are players, but i was under the assumption there was a "general" rule for pets, so it sounds like it's always pet-dependent, then? he's a hunter subclass
That’s not a cr 1/4 beast
There is no general pet rule. And yeah, that's a pretty crazy homebrew monster.
yes i don't know what cr to put when creating statblocks, not worried about that
if there's no general pet rule, how do i tell him what rules he can do with that pet?
Gentle reminder that this channel is for D&D newcomers to get help getting started.
Consider using #dm-discussion or #homebrew
yes i am a newbie
But this is more a DM question no?
yes & no, i also play ranger when i play as a player, so i need to know for myself too
what you are asking about is not really about beginner stuff though.
oh ok mb thought it was a simple question
because for beginners, my advice would be "dont do homebrew" until you got a good grasp of the game
There is also the issue that what you posted is not a suitable monster for the game (for pcs anyway) unless you're playing at levels 10+
yes they are all level 13
I've definitely had something else in mind than level 13 when picturing a beginner group 😅
so you are a new DM and your party is level 13? and one of them wants a pet?
the obvious solution is: they just just play a pet subclass like beastmaster or battle smith. (also start at level 3)
Hello!
As LVL 1 paladin with magic initiate feat. can I cast the learnt spell from magic initiate at class lvl 1 , or wait until spellcasting at lvl 2?
Lvl1
Hi Guys, as someone who comes from another PnP RPG and is now new in D&D, what is good source material to make a backstory for my Char? Is there stuff that covers a wider variety of regions, races or whatsoever to help me find my chars roots?
So much of that depends on the DM and group and where they decide their D&D game takes place, etc.
D&D is not really a monolithic setting - in fact there are many official D&D settings.
I'd suggest using more general notes for your character background (e.g. former soldier, now doing adventuring) and fleshing it out in more detail once you have a group you're playing with.
I actually already got a friend group. We Are all fairly new and the dm has done a few Sessions. I heard we will be playing „The shattered Obelisk“
Would you still suggest to keep it simple for the beginning?
I’m not really new to dnd but I’ve had this issue for a year or two now
how do I make my stats
Yeah - I'd suggest high level bullet points:
- Where do you come from - "farming village"
- What did you do before adventuring? - "solider in local noble's guard"
- What got you into adventuring? - "Got tired of working with noble, wanted to see the world".
Adjust as needed.

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
^ How to generate stats
Ok gottcha thank you very much.
One last question. If I were to Go depeer into my Charakters Lore at A later time where would I find sources for stuff Happening in the world? Or is there simply no Real Story of the races history or Storys about the gods or that Kinds stuff?
Again depends on your setting. Lost Mines of Phandelvar happens in a setting called Faerun in the Forgotten Realms. I'd suggest taking a looking at the community wiki for the Forgotten Realms to get ideas for your character's background.
Here's a link to the wiki: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
Also feel free to work with your DM and group to make your own lore and stuff for your game
I second Forgotten realms wiki. it mixes old and new lore pretty liberally, but it is also pretty comprehensive
Tyvm. I played the dark eye before and there you had Books with 200+ Pages for one god or a Region, so im pretty happy I dont Seem to Need that to begin playing DnD haha

can you help me find a campaign to play on
Check #find-a-game
It is a lot of player looking for dm but I don’t see any dm looking for player
Also, check out other D&D-related Discord server's LFG channels. Most D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers.
And @harsh fjord has a pretty comprehensive resource on looking for a game linked in their bio.
If they have an LFP post, you can reply in the attached thread
I don’t see one for them
And since I can’t ping it’s MrGregg
Every looking for post should have some kind of linked thread afaik, but I can't speak to the details
They may not have created a Looking For Players post but have created their own Looking For DM post.
At any rate, if you want to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game to join, please read #find-a-game carefully.
This isn’t about that, I am simply asking the person to accept my friend request
Try direct messaging them - but that's not a topic for this channel or for the server generally.
Also, be aware that a lot of people are really stingy with who they accept as a friend on Discord.
People may not like strangers asking for friend request out of the blue. I assume most are scammers.

is there any "beginer's" campaigns i could join

If there are any look for lost mines of phandelver, dragons of storm isle, dragons of iscspire for short. As far as long goes I’m not sure
Thanks
Hey i finished before the storm and im still a bit confused. What do the dice rolls do? I was getting +14 and up and had no idea what it was doing
When you make an attack roll you roll a d20 plus your Proficiency bonus and the appropriate modifiers (Str for most melee weapons, Dex for most ranged weapons) .
If you hit, you roll the damage dice (weapons do a set damage die plus the appropriate modifer (Str or Dex depending on the weapon type). Spells' descriptions will say which dice to roll for damage.

I have learning disabilities. And ADHD. So it is very hard for me to actually read the books. Can anyone walk me through the basic rules/how the game works? I'm starting to get into 5e.
Have you watched any videos on the rules?
It's really hard for me to follow along with videos. I get distracted really easily. It's better if I just hear someone walk me through it step by step.
You might struggle to find someone to walk you through everything, have you looked for a LGS for a beginner one shot?
There are some videos linked in the pins that are only a few mins long each so you can take your time learning through them (ve also got adhd and asd) and I learnt mostly through videos I put on to listen to whilst at work
I've heard about there being items players can buy. Where can I see what items are typically sold? For example, I've heard of a bag of holding, but what other items exist?
Typical items that will be sold are mundane ones, like adventuring gear:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#AdventuringGear
Whether or not magic items will be sold is very dependant on the campaign and DM you're playing with.
Thank you!
Is there a place where I can go for like complete new new people. I tried to make my own charecters and everything but it’s so complicated. I just want to play and have fun without having to buy stuff and learn everything.
#learn-to-play is the introductory information channel, and thie channel is for newcomer questions
While you don't need to buy anything to play, and you certainly don't need to learn everything, you will need to learn some things
Thank you, yes I know I meant like having to be an expert 🙂
I recommend checking out the following chapters of the free rules
Okay great thank you
Ok so i'm confused about echo knight
If i take the attack action
Can me and my shadow both attack? Or does it only have to be 1 of us
You make the choice for each attack.
When you take the Attack action on your turn, any attack you make with that action can originate from your space or the echo’s space. You make this choice for each attack.
From levels 3-4, that'll mean either you attack from your space or the echos. From level 5 on, when you get Extra Attack, you could attack once from your space and once from the echos space.
If you use Unleash Incarnation, you can make an additional melee attack from the echos space.
Hmm. Ok I'll have to try that ig
Stay cool, no one is going to judge your rp skills
Is this server for playing aswell?
yep, theres matchmaking channels where you kind find games or players
Tyy
It's a server where you can find games but you cannot play games here. This is a discussion server
Yeah thats what i meant 👍
Im new to DND. Pls help and another question, if possible is there a class that is related to Merchant or janitor? I like playing as an NPC sometimes.
There isn't a class for that, but a Merchant background exists.
thanks, if its not available then I can go either healer, medic or cleric or something similar.
Remember that D&D is made around the concept of being adventurers; bold, heroic individuals who set out to right wrongs and fight evil
It's not a game where you play a farmer or a merchant or a janitor
It's a game where you were a farmer until a bandit raid forced you to take up the sword and become a fighter
Or where you were a merchant until you heard the voice of the Goddess of Charity and now you're a cleric out to right the imbalances of wealth in the world you helped create
ohhhhh okay. I thought thatits a everything goes kind of game, sorry Im a newbie. But I really am interested in it for quite some time.
thanks
It's not really "everything goes", it's a game with baked in assumptions about how it's designed to be played
Hi everyone! I’m new to D&D and don’t know much about it yet, and I I find it quite complicated. I’d love to learn by jumping straight into the action with a patient group or someone who’s down to guide a beginner through their first few sessions. I think I’d learn best by practicing directly. Does anyone know where I could find such a group, or is anyone here open to teaching a complete beginner? Thanks so much in advance!

What are some good Oneshots or begginer freindly campagins for a new dm?
WOTC doesn't really publish any "one-shots" themselves. You can probably find some fan made ones online, but most official content takes at least a few sessions to actually complete. As for beginner friendly campaigns, there's plenty. Dragons of Icespire Peak and Lost Mines of Phandelvar were both designed for that specifically, but there's a good few others that could work. Mostly, the anthology books (meaning books with multiple small adventures in them instead of 1 big one) often come with a level 1 adventure that's great for beginners.
I'm particularly fond of the level 1 adventure in Candlekeep Mysteries
There are a few introductory-type adventures that are available for free:
- Introduction to Stormwreck is maybe more geared at new players, but is the first encounter or two from the current starter set adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. The Intro is intended as one session; the entire Stormwreck Isle adventure is probably about 3-4 sessions.
- Peril in Pinebrook is also at least somewhat targeted at a group of new players.
- Dragon of Icespire Peak, from the Essentials Kit, is probably about 5-6 sessions to play all the content from.
- I believe that there are two level 4 one-shots available on DDB that include pregenerated characters (in the form of the kids from the cartoon). One is something to the effect of Scions of Elemental Evil; the other explicitly invokes Uni's name.

I was actually about to come in here to ask about this. I have a lot of content on DnDB for generating sheets but not much adventure wise once I dipped into things.
Guess I should probably thank @carmine shuttle not the bot lmao.
My inability to correctly invoke more than about 2 bot commands is almost a running gag. Crediting Dyno would almost just add to it.
I think I might own some adventures just through the virtue of buying setting books on DnDB for PC resources. Once the site is back up I'll have to flip through and check.
I know the Spelljammer set had an adventure. Some of the other adventures also had PC resources in them, too.
I know for sure I have LMoP, but just getting back into 5e after taking a long break I dunno if I want to redo or rerun that again for the umpteenth time.
I haven't picked that up yet, but it's been on my radar.
Group of new players?
The newer 3 book sets been coming with adventures. Some of the older setting books might have adventures, but that's rarer. There's a fair amount of free or pay what you want content out there though
Probably. Trying to keep it a beginner adventure. I'd like to run a low level adventure into a campaign.
Good single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff.
While the project isn't all the way done, I've been working on this as a summary on the hardcovers: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VOgGmMcFGrYqzYiJXPjIRagqefGK4DiPDNCK2-qZ9cQ/edit?usp=drive_link
Storm King's Thunder was exactly the type of game I was thinking about running, but I have heard mixed opinions on how it runs as a DM and for players.
I have run very few of these personally. The descriptions are literally the blurb off D&D Beyond, occasionally with light editing so it stands alone. The Good for/bad for are as crowdsourced as I can make them.
I own the Wild Beyond the witchlight so I might start there.
I'm very much an Explorer, a Problem-Solver, and a Storyteller, so it's one that would be tailor-made for me to play in. Able to work out non-combat solutions to everything? Yes, please.
I went from running 5e to other more rules light systems seeking more collaborative storytelling and roleplay solutions. I watched I think it was Legends of Avantris play a Witchlight Carnival themed adventure and got sucked in. Kinda happy to find I own it
In my case, it's more an artifact of being old, when experience was more for how much loot you could get back to town than from killing things before taking their stuff
Hello everyone, newcomer here.
I would like to play in AL, and wanted to understand my steps for creating a character for future campaigns or adventures i could participate.
I have a physical PHB manual.
I tried both in DndBeyond and Roll20, but it seems i cannot create a char there with all the options, as it's missing most of the feats and such.
The only way i have is to prepare it on pen and paper or notepad?
Owning material in dead-tree format does not equate to owning it in DDB. DDB only offers things in the free basic rules wihtout buying it there, too.
(And same applies with Roll20)
Unless you buy the digital versions of the books in DnDBeyond, yes...
Is wild beyond the witchlight a good campaign to start with? Its the only adventure book I own because I saw it with a cool cat on the cover and thought, hell yeah that looks cool
It'll depend on lot on your players. WBW builds in the ability to both bypass nearly every potential combat encounter through clever problem-solving, and could also go sideways if the party tries to take on stuff that's out of their league.
But, my recollection is that there are pretty good GM notes for helping keep track of what's happening where and when.
I'm flipping through the digital book on DnDB and it really holds your hand through a lot of this stuff. I am still curious to see if there are outside resources or guides to running this adventure or tips on it.
what is customary for participating in an AL game?
Is having a ready pen and paper char enough, that i would convert it to digital once i get invited by the DM on his preferred platform before the game?
Depends al is kinda drop in and play kinda game
Also for new DMs the sunless citidel from yawning portal is good and it can be run as a oneshot
AL can be mostly one shots, yes, but there are sometimes longer run campaigns within it. It depends on how that branch runs their games.
Ye
You CAN run an entire campaign in AL. Any of the campaign books can be played in AL.
I think all the hardcovers have dedicated subreddits.
i will explore more the announcements
If you're playing online, you'd build it on the VTT platform. You can build a character in Roll20 without owning anything on Roll20, so long as you've got legal access to the material to be able to reconstruct how stuff is supposed to work. In person, my preference is for a pencil-and-paper character sheet anyway.
If you're in a campaign in Roll20, the DM can also grant you access to their owned materials.
thanks
any German players here ?
Ye they tend to share thier compendium though most of the time they will need to buy other things outside of the game since roll 20 doesn’t have everything
hello i just joined the server can i ask what do the dms use to keep track of all the characters is it also through roll20?
its my first time i even make an account on there XD
and is there requirements things i should have to start playing or is that mostly up to the dm
If the game is on roll20, sure, that would make sense. Although depending on the group it might also be a different service. DDBeyond is fairly common too.
?
ahhh okay cuz i saw most of the channels and they mentioned multiple stuff iw as confused what is what and if each had different purpose lol
Same, new too. Just joined.
I was told about a website with players and DM where you have a big map, and everyone can roll dice and the DM have an option to hide stuff or to keep track on stuff. I'm trying to find the website or at least an alternate
That does sound like roll20.
Roll 20? Is it like a website?
so far all i heard about is roll 20 and ddbeyond i think i used ddbeyond once but never stuck lol never play an actual game either
yes\
Yes, it's a VTT (virtual tabletop). It has a space where you can move tokens, roll dice and also manage a character.
Ohhh, can I manage HP and character sheets there too?
They are online digital tools that can be used to help play D&D
You can go look at them online to see what they can do
Roll20 is what’s called a virtual tabletop and provides a place to show maps and tokens
R u experienced with DND? I might need help in few hours with someone, (rn I'm in school)
Something*
This channel in general is here for helping.
Also, is roll20 free?
DnDBeyond is a digital toolset - they provide digital character sheets, digital book access, shared dice rolling log, and a simple vtt map and encounter tools (some tools are locked behind subscription and books need to be purchased separately)
it's freemium, so yeah, for what you need initially certainly
Yes you can join and make an account for free they have the standard resource documents/free rules built in.
Anything else you’ll need to buy like the okayers hand book and other things
Most of the time the dm will share those books with. You
so in most cases youll be using both dndbeyond and roll20?
Alr ty
I think those are the most popular ones on the whole, discounting paper, yeah.
okay okay cool where should i look to start any recs?
Not necessary to use both. Plenty of people own material in one place but not the other.
recommendations*
ahh got it so mostly comes down to dm prefrence
Books?
The players handbook, and monsters of the multiverse for expanded race options
I would recommend starting with the free rules and if you enjoy the game enough look into investing in buying the players handbook. But you can totally play D&D with just the free rules. The books provide more rules, options, and adventures.
Should i buy the players handbook
If you've read through the free rules, and are interested in getting access to more character creation content, then yes, it can be a good purchase. But if you're just getting started and want to dip your toe in the water, the Free Rules can give you a baseline to start out, before you spend any money

Thanks Mr!
I'll check it out later because I'm going to a mall
Alright totally new working on a plasmoid bloodhunter.
What can I do? I would like to be my groups "tank" I was in a gender chat and was told there aren't necessarily roles like that in DND so what could be possible what could I do if not able to be a bit of a tank type of character? I love the idea of being a big blood manipulating goo guy idk why so any pointers?.
#character-discussion is better place to ask about developing your character. This channel is to help new players learn the rules of D&D.
@cobalt frigate would that also apply for the rules for a specific class?
If you want to know about the basics of a class then here should be fine. Builds and optimization is more #optimization
Fantastic okay blood hunters I wanna know as much as I can about then how they work what the class can dom anything really
Blood hunters aren't an official D&D class but a #third-party one.
New to dnd me and my friend tryna play a game. But tryna play on Tuesday nights 9pm at . And sorry if this is the wrong chat for this 😅
Have you read the Free Rules yet?
Let me do that 😅
Can someone explain the paladin subclasses to me? I really struggle to tell them apart 😭
Which paladin subclass?
Erm lowkey all of them
Each subclass has a short description describing the oath.
Do you have access to the PHB and other books?
Then read the first paragraphs for each. I don't want to copy and paste it here.
Do you need vc to play dnd?
D&D can be played either in person or online.
some tables do it via messages but its rare
Text-based games do exist.
If online, you can use voice or text but the latter is slower.
I hate using vc that's why
real
Then you'll want to look for "play by post" (or "PBP") games.
You're going to be limited in the number of games. PBP is slow because it's not done in realtime.
Eh dammit
As a DM I'm too busy to constant read what my players are typing because I'm looking at multiple screens while DMing. So talking is much easier because I can talk and read my notes at the same time.
VC can be difficult at the beginning but does get easier. It's best when you have a DM that's comfortable giving direction and space to all players have an opportunity to talk. I play in two VC games and the more we play, the easier is gets.
The problem is I don't have my own private space to do so. + I have horrible anxiety
Ah, that's a very understandable issue. VC can definitely hard if you're in a public space, espcecially if you have anxiety. Another place to look might be a local game store or library. Play-by-post is an option and, while it is slower, it does work for some people. I wish you all the best in finding a game that works best for you! 🙂
I can't go out
I had a silly character (kinda)
im looking for a game do yall know any sites
Check #find-a-game
I made a doc full of places to check out: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/
Play-by-post is probably your best option then. Keep an eye on #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community there are posts from time to time advertising games. I hope you can find a great home for your character!
Well I still need to read the rules and all of that...plus I don't even know if my character follows the rules

The free basic rules are a great place to start. Once yo've had a readthrough, you'll be ready to create your first character. Feel free to check in here or #character-discussion if you have questions about building your character. This chat is also welcome is you have questions about the rules.
Can I dm you the basic draft of the character? I'm new to role playing as a whole so I would feel silly sharing here
well, i have a question about character creating, first time creating a cleric, and first time on 5e 2024
i wanna make a cleric that focuses on tanking and healing, rolling the stats with the dm i got an 18, then everything around 12-13. I initially put 18 on wis, but now that i started thinking about it, if i only focus on healing (i dont see many healing spells using the spellcasting stat) and shielding (also some spells dont use the stat), would it be viable to focus only on CONS and STR, ignoring completelly the WIS stat on a cleric?
thinking of going with the life subclass for more healings
Many healing spells do let you add your spell casting modifier, but it's true it's probably not important for them
You want wisdom to be high to improve your spell casting as a cleric. Then focus on constitution.
I won't be available but 'd be happy to connect you with my DM
considering i wanna be a tank, i'll probably also always fight melle range
But yeah depends on what you're trying to do.
question, has server changed topic from 5e to one dnd?
yeah, i'm thinking if i'll ever cast damage spells or really fight in a melee range to tank
One D&D was a codename for several projects in D&D. The 2024 update is still D&D 5th Edition
i know this specifically will only work on the first levels, but i can cast shield of fate for +2 ac with no wis, and heal reasonably well too on lvl 1
I feel so lost.... my bad.
o/ hi you can dm me:)
No worries! A lot of things have happened - D&D is working on creating a 3d virtual play space (Project Sigil), D&D bought DnDBeyond and is bringing 3rd party content to it, and then D&D is revamping D&D 5e with the 2024 updates.
Paladin oaths are just that each oath provide two channel divinity options which is kinda a way for you to build a character. Want a paladin that can turn the tide oath of the crown
Evening.
I've heard about DnD for decades but I have never played it. My sister and I want to buy a set and begin. Thing is we see a whole bunch of game boxes that look specialized or like promotions. Meant for advancd players and such.
What I want to know is: These days, what's the "bread and butter"/holotypical Dungeons and Dragons product to look for for newcomers after their first time?
Try out the fere basic rules first: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If you like it well enough, then the Players Handbook is a good investment.
Okay. I just pulled it up and I have it open in another tab. Looks a bit intimidating.
If you're looking to play immediately, though, and are sure you want to spend money, I'd grab either the Starter Set that includes Dragons of Stormwreck Isle or the Essentials Kit with Dragon of Icespire Peak.
There are a lot of rules, but you don't need to learn them all in one go. Plus, they're not all relevant: it's not like players will be all classes using all features and items simultaneously!
If you want a free minimalist intro to D&D, check out Peril in Pinebrook: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
I know I'm staying quiet now, but that's only because i'm looking into the products you're suggesting via other tabs as I clack. @echo kelp and @harsh fjord , thank you for this.
It’s fine you don’t need to know everything by heart but take your time with it
No one is expected to know all the rules by heart. It's ok if you have to look things up. I've been playing since the 5e playtest and I still have to look things up. That's what the books are there for.
Ye
DnD is a really fun ttrpg although the rules are daunting a lot of it is mind based. envisioning big villains, thinking of battles between you and the random goblin. I recommend getting a group larger than 1 on 1 as well. It makes the experience more enjoyable. I can't really recommend any story books but I do recommend getting the base set of the monster manual, players handbook, and dungeon masters guide. things like TotM also exist (Theater of the Mind) which requires a lot less equipment and is lower cost. that is about as much as I can say on this topic even though I have played for about 4 years. 😅
And remember... The rules are there to help you play, not to force you to do things.
"The secret we should never let the game masters know is that they don't need any rules"-Gary Gygax, creator of DnD.
Does anyone have any tips for a dnd newbie
- While there are a lot of rules, take them at whatever speed works for you. And the rules exist to be referenced, not memorized.
- Communicate your preferences and expectations; if everyone can get on the same page, it'll make for a better experience.
- Remember it's a game. It's supposed to be fun. It's not a test.
Also, D&D is very popular, so there are tons of resources to learn and to find games.
read over some of the basic rules (free rules) or watch videos that break the process down (like handbooker helper). There is no rush and there is no need to know everything, almost no one knows it all, so give yourself some grace.
Finding a game can take time, there are a lot of players and not nearly as many DMs, so patience here is a virtue.
Build characters that seem fun to you, but don't forget that D&D is a team game, not a videogame with you as the main character.
There's no real "wrong" way to play.
Well... except always obey Wheaton's Law. http://www.wheatonslaw.com
Aye, fellow newcomer. Asked for advice a few minutes before you did. Read @echo kelp's and @harsh fjord's answers about 7 and 9 spots above your own post. Pretty good resources. I'm slowly getting into them now as I speak.
I'm reading the Peril in Pinebrook packet and I'm seeing a recommendation for dice. I don't have either a 20-sided or a 6-sided.
Anyone know any free dice roller programs that aren't loaded with viruses?
Just Google 1d6 (or whatever)!
Holy cow, I just found out that Bing has its own die rolling program.
Can also use Avrae, a Discord bot for D&D (owned by DnDBeyond).
For more info, see #ddb-avrae-help
Anyone running any games that myself a new player can join.
Ive tried joining over 15 games and none succeeded
we ask that all group formations remain in our looking-for channels or over direct message. Soliciting for groups in other channels is not permitted.
hang in there though, it takes time
Ok
D&d beyond
Actually, yes, let's talk about that.
That's the name I keep seeing here. Is that just the name of the Discord Server, or is it a new product in the DnD empire?
I think a composite deterrent for me, and main thing I need to try to parse out, is that there are a whole bunch of products that say "Dungeons and Dragons: such-and-such", and I don't see any, say, game boxes that just say "Dungeons and Dragons", period. So I don't know what's mainline and what's a spin-off.
Whatever this "Beyond" is, it'd be nice to know where it falls in that regard.
It’s a app/site where you can make a digital sheet and buy books as well
Basically it’s the official digital library/vtt program made by wotc. If you wanna use roll-20 another vtt you can install a Firefox extension called beyond 20 to roll digital dice
is there anyway I could ask someone to help me create a character?
im just completely lost
#character-discussion would be a good place to ask, it's the channel for, well, characters 😎
thank you
What channel do i go to too find games?
thanks ❤️

how long usually does the website maintenance take?
Depends
Hello 👋!
Right now DDB is having issues and the devs are looking into it
oki, thank you!
Is there a way to read the free-rules from a different site than dndbeyond.com since that site is down right now?
Maybe roll20?
So Tomorrow I’ll have the starter and essential pack for DnD I am completely new to this so can anyone help me create characters and everything?
hey, i'm new around here and new to dnd 👋

@sage geyser A druid is a class that focuses on wielding the magical power of nature
They can cast spells that control plants and let them talk with animals, and transform into beasts using an ability called Wild Shape
Aha! They are in the DnDBeyond app, in my Library. Good job. I was worried about the DnDBeyond server being a Single Point of Failure, which is bad for business.
I will never find a campaign
Finding a consistent group with good scheduling is easily the hardest part of the game. Once you got one it gets good though.
Have you looked other places?
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Ive looked at beyond forums
Roll 20 forums, 20 discord servers. Meetup.com and others
It’s not like an MMO you don’t find a game that quick so wait people may get back to you
3 days is still a short time. Some D&D groups can take a month (or even longer!) to organize.
Keep applying and be patient.
Organizing isnt the worst part
Also definitely check your local area. You'd be surprised to find little enclaves and communities of players who prefer in-person. Check your local comic/game shops, and even your local coffee shops!
Nobody acceots me
Yh not my atea
Ive already checked theres not even a store near me
I've been running a community for half a decade now and I still get locals to the area coming in with "we had no idea you were here!"
Maybe you need to look at how you are approaching the game and find out why they are saying no
Well unless they dont like an excited and enthusiastic player
Then idk what im doing wrong
You can be doing everything right and still not get the result you want. But keep at it! Best of luck!
Hlo guys
I am new to this can u guys teach me anything about this like anything I just saw some guys playing and It seems attractive

Ok
I read few but I will read later without mixing them with each other
Can I ask 1 thing usually how much time it takes to complete 1 average game?
One session can be anything from 2-4 hours
A normal session can take up a few hours while a whole campaign can take up months
One-shot is one session (2-4 hours typically).
An adventure could take a couple sessions to months.
Campaigns could last a year or even decades. (My campaign has been going on for three years now and will last at least another two years)
A game can be anything from a one shot so 1 session upto many sessions over many years
Oh thx for responding me
And how will I know if a game is about to start?
If I wanna join
The DM schedules their games.
You're very unlikely to jump into a game right NOW. It will take time for the DM and players to coordinate a day and time to play.
It's like herding cats at times trying to get players to see if they're going to play the next session. (My session is tonight and only one of five players have responded back).
Can I observed other players game too?
At my table it's a set day and time (every Wednesday at 7pm)
Unlikely because people probably are uncomfortable with Internet strangers watching their game. You can check out the actual plays on Youtube and Twitch.
I started playing in the early 1980s. So think of the kids in Stranger Things season 1.
Oh and usually how much time people takes to learn it?
Yeah I was curious after watching that too
You can get the gist of it in a session. It helps a lot if you read the rules first instead of hoping the DM will pause the game to teach you the fundamentals.
Hum yeah I understand if I will pause everytime it will ruined others interest
Loads of love plays on YouTube have a look at the dungeon dudes or the actual dungeons and dragons YouTube for some gameplay examples
Oh thx for advice friend

The pieces to get into D&D:
Know the rules.
Know how to make a character.
Find a group (including a DM).
Then play.
The first three can be done in any order theoretically, though you stand a better chance of finding a group (if you're playing with strangers) if you know the rules and how to make a character. Ideally, you should have character concepts so your eventual character fits the game the DM is running.

Hello.
Checking in. I'm going to try to make it a habit of mine to check in and report until I finally understand what the heck I'm doing
...Which is a long ways off. I'm reading the dice roll rules for Peril in Pinebrook. And these are the simplified rules?
Well, the rules simplified, rather
Yep. At least from the game-makers, anyway.
If you have questions as you go along we can help to answer.
#optimization would be where to go!
Hey all I asked this question a while back but forgot to check for replies so apologies. I was just wondering what the dice numbers mean. I did the before the storm mini game and it was really fun. I understood most of it except the dice. I’m not sure what the numbers adding to my characteristics mean, or how it impacts gameplay
So dice notation looks like: 2d6 - this means roll 2 d6 dice (or roll a d6 dice twice).
Your skill/ability modifiers are based off a calculation that basically works out to "every 2 points above 10 = +1".
So a strength ability score of 16 would mean you have a +3 modifier to your strength.
?tag new abilities
So the number before the dice is the amount of dice, and the number after is the max number the die has? So for like 2d6 is =to 2 die max amount of 6
It's the sides of the dice, but that mostly amounts to the same thing, yes.
No it means 2 6 sided dice and what ever you get is the total
1d20 is 1 20 sided dice ext
Hey I am brand new to dnd and I am gonna be the dungeon master this weekend when I am gonna play with my friends and I have a question
I am starting to understand the rules and how they work but what I don’t understand and need help with is what dice to use for what situation
usually the book tells you what dice you roll
could u name a specific example
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Attacking d20
Damage d4,6,8,10
d20 is used for Attack, Ability Skill checks, and Saving Throws rolls.
Weapons will say which die to use in the weapons table (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#WeaponsTable)
Spells will in their spell description which dice to use.
Thanks a lot
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
I recently got glyph of warding and the description has been confusing and help hasn't worked well. Does moving it 5 feet from where it was inscribed trigger it if there is a trigger already set up? does the trigger you set replace the 5 feet thing
That's more of a #dnd-rules question but "If the surface or object is moved more than 10 feet from where you cast this spell, the glyph is broken"
hey, im new to dnd and im looking for someone to explain everything they know

ok, no problem, thanks for clarifying
Quick Q. with encounters, if the party starts an encounter, are there like "rules" on which enemies should be included? would enemies in nearby rooms be "aggrod"?
Nearby rooms no, unless there’s a loud sound like an explosion (although that’s still up to you), but often times all enemies would be aggro’d
Stealth and lines of sight sometimes come into play, but usually just go with the whole room
also i was lookin up whether changing weapons, say from a sword to a crossbow, does this require a turn action? what i found was kind of ambiguous and wondering whats the best way to handle it
I’m looking to join
Personally, I allow it to be a bonus action. I think that’s the most player friendly way, and will piss off people less!
It's up to the DM to decide ahead of time or improvised on the spot what the enemies are.
There is no "aggro" in D&D since every monster/NPC is controlled by the DM and they decide what the enemies do.
first time making a campaign and i know its gonna be janky but the less the better haha
If you're holding a sword (but didn't attack with it) you can drop it as a "free action" and then draw the crossbow as part of the crossbow Attack Action.
I recommend DMing using a prewritten adventure first so you know what to expect and do since you're new to D&D. (I'm assuming you never played before?)
Yeah, i still might do that, just ive always had lots of stories in my head and i like doing th ings the hard way xD
plus ive been enjoying drawing maps
Have you played before?
I’m gonna agree with Old Man here. Its fun to improv and such, but a good grip on the game is very important before you can do that
i played a short adventure once. but first time DM
You may have stories but it may not translate to an adventure because the players are the co-storytellers in the adventures. They may decide to do or say things you don't expect them to do and possible change the plans you had in mind.
Always expct the unexpected from players.
ALWAYS.
esp with the mates im playing with lol
As a player, I have played with people who actively work against the DM. They suck.
What you plan to happen, will not happen. If you imagine it like that, you’ll have much more fun
And hate your players way less 💀
for sure haha

What sub class should I pick for my rogue
Are there any you’re specifically going for?
I wanted to go with soul knife but I Don't know if it's good
OK thank you
Soul knife is an amazing subclass if you want to do everything the rogue wants to do but better in my opinion. Without alerting anyone you can talk to the party, summon weapons, and have a weaponized bonus action.
What channel do I look for a new party in?
#find-a-game Read this channel. It tells you all you need to know
Thank you
When building a Ranger and getting level 3, obtaining Beastmaster on D&D Beyond, is it possible to also add the companion to the character sheet somehow?
Go to the extras section of your character sheet and there should be a tool to add your beast companion
i would love to learn DND through campaigned by every DM ik is very rude
anyone in to teach me in DND through a campaign/minicampaign
thank you
Sadly most people cant do one on one the bot will help you start tho
Here
How exactly does it work with weapons should I just pick what weapon i want that matches my stats and class in weapon mastery or go with a starter pack?
You get to pick a weapon from your class starting equipment
Not the case for 2024. But you could take the gold amount and then buy the weapons you have picked for your mastery.
Ohh okay alright that makes more sense
Yeah I'm trying to make a mercenary knight but I don't wanna go crazy with the weapons and just have one main one backup
Hello
Hi vro
I am completely new and have no equipment and experience to play dnd just made an character sheet in dnd beyond is this enough to play ?
Wait wdym by not the case for 2024
Depends on the group you will be joining. There are online dice rollers, so you really don't need any equipment unless asked for by the DM.
In 2024, each class gets 2-3 options of an entire 'loadout' to choose from. If the loadouts don't fit, the last option is a gold amount, with which you can buy the equipment you need.
In 2014 you used to be able to pick from weapons freely, depending on class.
Dm?
Ohh so now you have to actually use the gold to have a reason as to why you have the weapon you chose
Dungeon Master
A D&D group has a number of players (usually 3-6 or so) and one DM. The DM is responsible for the world, the players are responsible for their respective characters.
Oooo thats so cool
Sounds like a lot of work
So how can i join dnd group?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
It can be, yeah, but doesn't have to be. There are quite a lot of helps for DMs out there, like prewritten adventure modules (so, a book with a preexisting narrative foundation).
Can you look at my character sheet?
You could post it in #character-discussion
If you made your character on DDBeyond, you can directly post the link, but remember to set your character to "public" so people can see the sheet.
You can do this by clicking on the characters name in the top left, then "Character settings", then scroll down until you see the option.
Ok rhx
How exactly does the damage work? Like 1d6? Does 6 damage I'm guessing along with a + damage if possible
You roll a d6
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#DamageRolls
Each weapon, spell, and damaging monster ability specifies the damage it deals. You roll the damage dice, add any modifiers, and deal the damage to your target. If there’s a penalty to the damage, it’s possible to deal 0 damage but not negative damage.
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier—the same modifier used for the attack roll—to the damage roll. A spell tells you which dice to roll for damage and whether to add any modifiers.
Thanks I appreciate all the help
Would masons tools be good for a demolition character? Planning on making a maul using barbarian
Tool useage is largely going to depend on campaign and DM. It might not come up at all, or it might be constantly used. Hard to say.
Makes sense yeah
Mightve been misinformed but does the musket only have 1 shot per fight sequence and can only reload after it's over or let group companion do their turn and reload during
Oh no, it's much less restricted than that. The musket has the Loading and Ammunition properties. I recommend reading those, but the upshot is:
- Only one shot per action
- Each shot consumes a piece of ammunition, loaded as part of the attack
Thank God lol that would be a nightmare lol
The only thing about the musket realistically frustrating is that it doesn't have casings like modern bullets that can be picked up after a battle and reloaded
Don't worry about realism too much and talk about it with your DM. The rules are really permissive there and would actually allow some reuse.
The ammunition property states:
After a fight, you can spend 1 minute to recover half the ammunition (round down) you used in the fight; the rest is lost.
Alright yeah fair
what book do i need for the "oath of the crown" paladin spec?

oo ok. ill take a look c:
hmm i looked at it. im still not sure what kind of game i want to play because im so new, so i guess i just need to be introduced to different styles of games to figure out what id like x3 im willing to try anything c:
Regardless of the style of game, knowing the rules will definitely help!
i know most of what it said. few new things though. like ive played a few games. got my feet wet, just never a longer session so i understand the bare basics. but thats about it. c:
also have most of the 2024 books on d&d beyond except the lord of the rings one with master tier, and happily willing to share. c: even have the monster manual on preorder ❤️
Okay seriously tho
As a DM I just want some advice.
How can I add more Intensity to Random Encounters
Probably a question for #dm-discussion but one thing I've seen work is environmental effects. For example, at the beginning of every turn you roll and a random terrain effect can occur.
This chat says Newcomers so I assumed it was for new DMs like me and stuff
It's more for the basics of the game.
It totally is but you may get some great feedback from other DMs since you're asking a more specific question.
Normally we answer questions about the basic rules here 🙂
I just want to hear from people in general
#dm-discussion is for chatting about how to DM, and can give you advice.
I am very very vanilla. I have always had RP Groupchats but now I finally got a TABLE and I’m trying to advance to More D&D territory
And make things more interesting for my friends rather than just a basic Groupchat
Newcomers is more about the general basics of D&D and how to get started in general.
#dm-discussion is where you can ask for more spesifics, this is more for basic stuff
Where can you get a dm
In person or online?
Online
Check #find-a-game
hello folks, new here, but been DMing for ~35 years on and off. I just received my Sigil code but am having download problems. Is there a Discord chat for Sigil help?
There is a channel for Project Sigil - #sigil-vtt-archive
I am so brain dead when making my first dnd character
Is this a beginner friendly server? Because i have never played in my life but i would love to play.
This channel is to help new players understand the rules of D&D.

What does gp stand for>
Gold Pieces, a form of currency in D&D
Why does a stirge have a +5 attack bonus?
Blood Drain. Melee Weapon Attack: +5
(For the melee weapon?
Because that's what the game designers designed it as. (Also that's not really a question for this channel - this channel is more for helping folks new to D&D get started with the core game rules and mechanics)
It's more of a DM question or general D&D question - so either #dm-discussion or #dnd-discussion.
I recommend checking #channel-guide to see if there's an appropriate channel for a specific topic you'd like to discuss.

Can you have a dice roll randomly generated in discord?
several bots do this, i am aware of the avrae bot
If avrae is on the server how do I roll?
Ask your DM which method of rolling they allow.
And the exact command would depend how avrae was set up, since you can change the command symbol
Ok thanks
You can actually run Avrae commands in #ddb-avrae-commands
