im not sure if you have to roll a d20 to actually do the spell though
you MIGHT have to, key word might
No you donāt
If you wanted to do something that lies outside of the spells description, some DMs might have you roll to extend the effect slightly. But outside of that, a spell does what it says. And if it doesn't include a save, a check or an attack roll, no dice are necessary.
Ooo okay. So rolling a die is only for attack spells for the damage?
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one youāll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, ā3d8 + 5ā means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
If something requires a dice roll, it will say so.
Or if the DM decides a dice roll is needed - e.g. "My character wants to climb up this cliff" - DM may require a skill check like D20 + athletics modifier.
Depends on the spell.
Acid splash makes anyone in the area have to do a Dexterity saving throw. If they fail, they suffer damage determined by another roll.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spell-descriptions#AcidSplash
Eldritch blast needs a ranged spell attack roll to hit a target.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spell-descriptions#EldritchBlast
Magic missiles just do their thing and roll for damage!

hello, I am new to D&D. I'm trying to make a lil server with my friends and need a template for like basic rules and etiquette and stuff like that. If any of yall can help, i would greatly appreciate it
Hello! I'm basically completely new to dnd and i have no friends that want to play dnd with me, is there any way for me to join some folks from here? Preferably today if possible
#find-a-game has some details but you may struggle to find a game same day
Thanks, i can understand that that's a problem lol
Hey same also Arcane fan let's gooooo
Anyhow does anyone know how to post on the #looking-for-players channel?
Thereās instructions in #find-a-game
You could grab some ideas from here: #rules message
Odd question. Is it okay if i incorporate exhaustion and the different damage types later in my campaign? I'm still learning and don't want to overwhelm myself
Sure. It will still be recognisably dnd without those. Just be aware that some characters may have resistance to some damage types.
Exhaustion is an easy strip, since it doesn't come up often.
And be sure to inform your fellow players that you have made these changes.
Kind of a weird one.
Isn't there a Spell, or Feat, or type of Invocation that allows the user to gain information on a targets Stat block/modifier? Like for instance my character would use it and be able to figure out the targets charisma score/modifier? I remembering doing this in one campaign that shouldn't have had any homebrew.
A couple subclass features maybe, but I didn't think they got that specific
The 2014 Battle Master has a feature like that, but doesn't work for Charisma specifically.
You could get STR, DEX, CON, HP, or AC.
I see. There isn't anything like a spell, or Feat? Since I remember doing it and getting the choice to get Any stat. Like STR, DEX, CON, WIS, INT, and CHA. But not HP or AC
How do I find that again. My brain hasn't been working lately
Battle master has something similar
Already mentioned
And generally speaking, you would look at your character sheet
Though if you have that, it should tell you where you got that ability anyway
I was just wanting to know if you remembered what you were playing since that might narrow it down
It could have been one of my earlier character which is a Fighter/Battle Master/Bard/College of Lore. Or the Warlock/The Fiend, or the Rogue/Thief
Hi all Iām new
Well, of those battlemaster was already mentioned. It's possible your DM was just running it wrong
Thief definitely can't do that and I don't believe Fiendlocks can either
I can see if my character sheet that the Fighter/Battle Master/Bard/College of Lore has Know your enemy. But that was the aforementioned one. Plus Know your Enemy takes one minute to cast. This was instantaneous.
And I don't remember doing it on that character
Then I don't know what to tell you
Hex lets you give disadvantage on any stat but it doesn't tell you the modifier
And I can't think of anything else that does
There's no guarantee that your DM was actually running 100% RAW
Alright. It was probably just ran wrong and my memory isn't working.
That guides me to this other question. Isn't there some sort of spell, Invocation, or Feat that can let the character give disadvantage on a creatures intelligence stat? Something that is different from Hex.
Possibly. We're getting out of the realm of new player questions though
I see. Where would I go for that?
#character-discussion or #optimization maybe
Alright. Thank you!
So guys and galls what we up to

Hello, I'm totaly new to D&D where would I be able to have my frist game
Yo I'm new and have no idea what I'm doing a friend of mine recommended I start
Take a look at the Dyno post just above, there are some helpful videos, guides and a link to the Free Rules.
I got a question. Are there any classes/spells that allow the player to cast a magical slash? Like, they can summon a slash in the air or at a specific point?
Not specifically, no. But the flavor (visuals, aesthetics, etc) of a spell is up to you and your DM to determine.
For example, the spell Magic Missile describes it as shooting three homing missiles at a target, but with your DM approval, you can flavor it as slicing a target three times instead.
Okay, I could work with that, I was wondering because I was thinking when I eventually get better (currently recovering from surgery) I could play a character with similar skills to an anime character called Ryomen Sukuna.
I'm not familiar with that character, but flavor is usually the best way to go when trying to fit the vibe you're looking for. As long as your flavor doesn't impose any mechanical changes to the spell, most DMs will be fine with it.
Fair, but all in due time I shall find out.
Hello
If I start out with pistols, do I have the ammunition for them or no?
@smoky adder ( did not want to continue conversation in a wrong channel ) so if i were to be in the process of making enemy statblocks of different rankings of the same enemy, i can adjust the "to hit" modifier based on how difficult ( or not ) i want the enemies to be?
There are no classes with include a pistol or their ammunition in their predetermined starting equipment, so the only way you would be able to start with that is if you bought it via "gold buy." Buying a pistol does not automatically come with ammunition. Firearm ammunition costs 3GP for 10 pieces
Ok, I just used the app and started with a Fighter legacy class and used thr 2024 rules to get a pistol since its classified as a martial weapon
The fighter legacy class is the 2014 version. You cannot choose the 2014 version, then use the 2024 rules to start with a pistol
Ok
Also kinda unrelated, how do u do the timezone thing?
You have to put a specific string of numbers in brackets like <this>. I used a website to automatically generate that string of numbers, then copy and pasted it into discord
Ok ty
The 2014 DMG suggests two ways to determine the attack bonus. One of those ways is to calculate it like a player would.
The other is to use the the Monster Statistics by Challenge Rating table to find the expected value for your target CR.
Feel free to adjust the attack bonus as you see fit to match whatever concept you have in mind. For example, the baseline attack bonus for a challenge rating 1 monster is +3, but if your monster needs more accuracy, raise its bonus accordingly.
Just be mindful that raising its accuracy might affect its final CR calculation.
In general, statblocks are considered proficient with the items that they have. If they have a rapier as an option on the statblock, they are considered proficient in it. This is where the +3 that you mentioned in your previous post comes from.
Yes, when creating your own statblocks, you can adjust the to hit modifier as you wish (theyāre your statblocks, after all). In general, best design practice is to have it be traceable/make sense (e.g. this guy has a +4 PB and a +5 dex. He wields a +2 long sword, so his total to hit is +11. If I wanted to increase this further, I may add a feature that read āX has gains an additional +2 to their melee weapon attack rolls)
As stated above, there is a table and a couple DMG suggestions as well for determining attributes & modifiers
Yeah, per the MM:
Assume that a creature is proficient with its armor, weapons, and tools.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/monsters#ArmorWeaponandToolProficiencies
thank you guys so much for your thorough explanations and resources. i now definitely understand how the bonus works. i am really appreciative and grateful for you guys.

š ok I love playing dnd a bunch just really need to find some people to play with on my free time
Whats some good map maker tool to easily make an map of a city/town?
If you want to discuss third party map making tools, you'll probably get the best answers in #third-party. This isn't really a newcomer question about the basics of the game
My go-to is watabou.itch.io but other tools exist. Donjon will do you a quick one and add some details. Check #dnd-maps for more.
When it comes to creating a character should I add tools to my inventory? Or should I be completely bare?
Add anything that comes from your background and class
I usually put them down in the proficiency section
Think they mean character equipment not where to put things on a sheet
I figured
Yes this is what I mean, mb
Alright Iāll keep that in mind mind thanks
Hi Iām new
dude, why does every single campaign require to be 18+ ;-;
Because adults are (rightfully) discouraged from spending any significant time in close contact with random children on the internet.
fair enough, but ive been on the internet for long enough and i am well aware of anything that could occur, but since all the campaigns i could have joined all had 18+ restrictions, it gives me a hard time to find a group to play with, espeacially since im new aswell
and its quite annoyingš
does any1 have good combos for a dragonborn sorcerer? preferably with only cantrips
nothing op just useful
What do you mean by "combos" exactly? Like which spells are good to pick?
i mean things like i use 2 spells in succession that work together
like shape water to freeze a cube of water above an enemies head and drop it
Most spells don't really intact with each other like that, especially when it comes to just one player. You can have a few spells which combo well with other players' abilities, but DnD doesn't really have a system in place for your own spells interacting with each other
elaborate on the other + me combos
And Cantrips are intentionally weaker than normal spells, since you can cast them infinitely, so they tend to not have any big effects
like sorcerer + wizard combos or something
Usually by the time your turn comes back around, the situation will have changed quite a bit. š
i remember someone telling me abt a hexblade warlock booming blade + something combo where u can cast 1 as an action and 1 as a bonus action that does huge damage when the opponent moves
Mind Sliver is a good example.
If you hit a target with that spell, they have to subtract 1d4 from their next saving throw.
Which sets up a good opportunity for one of your party members to then force them into a saving throw.
is that not kinda op (idrk im rlly new)
It's certainly good, but I wouldn't say it's OP, no.
wait as in like chucking a rock at them so they use a dex save orrrr
For example, Sorcerer can get the cantrip Mind Sliver. It makes it so that the very next saving throw your opponent makes has a lower chance of success.
By the time it's come back to your turn, one of your allies will probably have forced the opponent to make a saving throw, so that debuff is no longer present for you to capitalize on.
Your friends benefited!
... But you didn't.
Or some of the warlock's invocations that can let you move targets around when you hit them with an eldritch blast, pushing them away from vulnerable allies or towards your big hitters.
Same hat š¤
This is the official server. They want you to have fun so you buy the product.
ye but ur not affiliated r u?
Everyone here started as a new player once, so most folks are just happy to help others get their start.
I mean, most of us are here because we like talking about D&D š
Whether to new or old players
We like to show off how smart we are.
We've curated a fairly positive community here over the years
makes sense, why don't* any other games share this (hint hint CoD)
D&D is ultimately a game of cooperation. At the end of the day, it's just you and your friends telling a story together.
also i have a question chat
how does searching a battlefield work? (example: finding an amulet your opponent was wearing/finding things like coins)
It will depend somewhat on the situation and DM. Sometimes they'll just say you spend some time and get some loot, often they'll ask for a Perception or Investigation check to see how much loot you get.
If you saw your opponent was wearing a particular amulet and wanted it, just saying, "I take their amulet," should be enough.
kk, so i presume if u roll high on investigation u will get a good few coins and possibly a rare item/strong weapon? (edit: that your opponent was wielding/used in battle)
Once they're in no position to object, obviously.
kk
you seem very knowledgable about dnd, can you rate my character?
Pop over to #character-discussion and share what you've got.
okay thx
can i dm u abt it? i have pics of the sheet
Upload them to imgur and share them on the character channel.
imgur?
@wild onyx do you know how to copy a whole character sheet as an image? i can only snipping tool half of it at a time
im using roll20.net btw
i got it
You could copy both halves, that's fine.
hey im making a lvl 20 sorcerer for a 1 shot. i had a thought but unsure if it would work. If i cast time stop, in my following turns could i cast otiluke freezing sphere with my action and bonus action via quickened spell, repeat this for each turn storing each sphere in a bag. Then as my final action throw the bag of spheres at the BBEG and do multiple sphere saving throws and damage?
Try #character-discussion or #optimization - level 20 characters are not really a newcomer topic!
will do thanks
I have a bit of a silly question, but if I wanted to start playing DnD but have 0 knowledge on the game whatsoever how should I go about learning?

Good night people
how do i do things
by doing.
Hi guys I'm pretty new to dnd and I just wanted to ask if I could import a character from dnd beyond to roll20?
There is a browser extension called Beyond20, I believ, though it only lets you roll things on Beyond and it sends the rolls to Roll20
Roll20 lets you input all the character info though, so you could just input the info by hand / copy paste š¤
Hey yall, new to dnd I've already played like a very quick campaign, I understand the very basics, but would love for someone to really help me understand the ins and outs of making characters, how spell slots work, and how bonus actions and such play out. Dm me if you'd be willing to help out
We unfortunately don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks one on one - but take some time to look through the free basic rules as it explains many of those things.
If you have a specific question, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel.
Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
For making a character the first steps are identifying and selecting your:
- Class
- Species/race
- Background
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighterās mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizardās spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
so i gotta make like a backstory right?
Depends. Backstory is more about some tidbits of info to help "center" your character in the game setting
Usually all you really need is:
- Where does your character come from in the world?
- What did they do before becoming an adventurer?
- What prompted them to get into adventuring?
alright ill think of some ideas
Can someone rate my rouge build I rolled stats
Did your DM see the rolls?
Best to use the standard array until you have something definite, then you know where to put your higher and lower numbers. Want to come to #character-discussion to share what you have?
Sure but I can't send photos their
Upload it to imgur and share a link.
What's that
An image sharing site.
Ok
how do I play the game?
Same question as the guy on top of me

Hello everyone! I've been into the idea of playing D&D for awhile and I've decided to act on it, so I wanted to know if anyone has any tips for a new player creating a character?
It's a space to record your valuable finds separate from your working equipment.
DnD beyond is a great resource but I prefer paper personally
Skim the classes in the Free Rules, pick one and read it. Use the standard array to put your ability scores down. Highest in your spellcasting ability if you have one, otherwise Strength or Dexterity. Don't put Constitution lower than 10.

could someone help me with the character sheets? I don't really understand how they work ^^''
What do you not understand specifically?
No worries, you have the six ability scores, theyāre on the left side of the sheet
Those ability scores influence your skills, some of which you are proficient with from your class, others your background, these are next to your ability scores, the proficiency bonus is above your stats, this is determined by your level
You have hit points, partially determined by your class, the rest comes from your constitution modifier. The higher the ability score, the higher the modifier
okay, thanks! :)
now I just need a minute to understand what that means...
I feel kinda dumb, english is not my first language TvT
no worries, I can always explain later in more detail if you need to, feel free to ping me
Chapter 2 in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through the parts of the character sheet and how to fill it out.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
Have you picked a class, background, and species?
alright!! Thank you lots!!
not really...I don't know all the classes. I find Druids pretty cool tho! So I might go with that.
But I don't really understand what a background is in DnD. And what species there are
Druids are fun!
There's an article here that gives a good overview of all the classes:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
Thank you!! ^^
Backgrounds represent what your character did before they became an adventurer. There are some examples in the Free Rules. You can change the description to suit what you have in mind, but the features they give (such as skill proficiencies) are fixed.
You can learn more about backgrounds and species here in the Free Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-origins#CharacterBackgrounds
There's four species there in the Free Rules itself: Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, and Human.
But there's like 60-70 official species across all the books. You can see the full list here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/species
oh okay!! Thanksies!
I better start reading then!
The 2014 Basic Rules included dragonborn and tiefling.
The 2024 Free Rules do not.
But those in the Basic Rules can be found here, if you're interested:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/races
?tag new sheet
Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether itās a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're new to D&D and struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
āļø Added a new one
Though I think I'll omit that "if you're new" part. Seems redundant here. š
Recently did a character sheet and now listening to a dnd podcast I realized that I have some more backstory and info I need to add š
Sketch out the character's personality, and aim for a three sentence backstory. Opinions vary but I suggest:
- origin/ upbringing
- pivotal moment
- call to adventure
Using generic rather than specific names (an evil cult rather than the Cult of the Shade) will help you slot it into a setting if you take that character to a game.

Hello

Hello hello
Yo
@wet quiver hiii
Im aster
How new are you to dnd?
Lol VERY NEW , consider me just outta shell new .. wht abut u??!!
Everyone needs to start somewhere man
Iām still getting used to the 2014 rules but I also new need to learn the 2024 rules which art to different aside from class reworks and āorigins.ā
What I've seen can help is creating your own references and focusing on those.
Welcome, folks! There's some handy links above to help you get started, but if you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
So I'm reading through the DMG 2024 and I'm looking at the sample adventures, they're pretty nice for newcomers like yours truly.
Immediately I'm faced with an issue tho.
The Fouled Stream says the adventure takes place near the village of High Ery. Now I very well might be blind but I can't find that town on the map they include in the very same bookš
Anybody been able to find it? Cause I can find the river Ery, just not the villageš
Hi!
This is my first time getting a discord account and also playing DND- I've watched tons of dnd media but haven't ever played a game before- I have a large background in fictional writing so I wanted to jump in and create my own campaign for me and my friends but I'm getting lost on all the rules and where to begin- does anyone have some tips?
Any thing in particular your stuck on?
Welcome! I would check out #learn-to-play as well as this channels pins, both of which contain a bunch of useful resources including links to the Free Rules!
In my opinion, you should try reading as much of the Free Rules as you can before starting up the game. Donāt worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with them or be able to know where in the rules you can find a rule. Perhaps try making a character just for rules practice, even if youāll just end up DM-ing.
As for DM-specific advice:
- Plenty of free adventures can be found on D&DBeyond that you can run. I suggest running pre-written before a custom campaign so you can get a sense of pacing, rewards, quest structure, etc.
- Hold a session 0 to go over table expectations including content triggers, banned content (if any), a setting introduction, etc.
- Try to run the game as close to RAW (rules as written) as possible, aka no changes/custom rules
- Be comfortable saying no to players
- Hydrate!
I am trying to figure out how to allow my players to create chars on dnd beyond. I have enabled content sharing but we cant figure out how they can create chars using it
Does the person that owns the content have a master tier subscription?
Ye (me in this case)
Have you made a campaign and got them to join it?
It's due east from Greyhawk City, toward the northeast end of the river.
Is it the "create unassigned character" button on the campaign page?
Look for an invite link at the top of your campaign page.
When your players use that to join the campaign, they'll have the option to create a new character, add an existing one, or claim one of the unassigned characters in the campaign.
Whichever option they choose, that character should then have access to any shared character options from that campaign.
If that still doesn't work, then #ddb-support can help you troubleshoot further.
Lol, guess I've been too impatient š
I was looking at the large world map this whole time thinking it should be on thereš

Iām a little nervous to get back into it, donāt want to make too many mistakes and use too much time
me 3
I was wondering if people recommend buying the handbooks on dnd beyond before getting into sessions. I'm pretty new to dnd and I noticed you cant have certain races or subclasses without paying.
Honestly, I'd stick with the free options until you play at least one game and know you actually like it
You get more options if you buy them, but there's enough to build plenty of characters for free
What does a yn like myself do if I'm scared of skeletons in DND?
Talk to your DM and group about topics or things that are problematic for you.
Help set expectations and boundaries so that everyone playing can have fun.
Talking to the dm how ever skeletons are a monster and sometimes are hardbaked into the game.
Sometimes a gm can swap them out to a monster of similar cr. Sometimes they arnt able to. Or may removed them.
In rare cases they will say wrong table look else where.(not trying tk be mean just honest)
hello there
Thatās one of the many ways to learn is by making mistakes and falling into a pit trap
Or two
I recommend taking a look at this, Tinten.
It's neutral
so theres neutral neutral characters?
oh ok
If i remember right
thanks
No problem
We call that alignment True Neutral. Choosing an alignment isn't very important to most DMs. Just think about how your character would act if faced with a moral dilemma.
Most DMs would appreciate that more.
I was thinking of an oathbreaker but my character wouldn't really be chaotic
Oathbreakers are more evil than chaotic. And some people like the idea of good Oathbreakers since there are a couple of oaths that don't focus on doing good. Personally I prefer it when Oathbreakers are evil since their powers don't feel too... benevolent.
Oh don't get me wrong he'll be evil but it's more toward his enemy's then just everyone
Like he kinda channels it toward his enemies
Hello! I am curious and I'm fairly new to dnd, haven't experienced it yet. Is there like a voice channel with dnd players and dm that has ongoing story that I could listen to or join? I don't want to be a part of it, I just to observe how dnd works.
There are Youtube channels such as Critical Role and Dimension 20 though keep in mind that some of these groups are putting on a show.
If you want to read instead I recommend looking at this. One of the links leads you to a small minigame that gives you a taste of how DnD works. Pretty fun. I have played it even though I know enough about DnD.
oh okayy~ thank youu!
I see, okay I'll look it up. Although, no one plays DND here in this server that people can join as audience as well?
I feel like most people will be hesitant to let a stranger just hang around with them. To be completely honest.
Is that so? Okay, sorry I'm new this, but thank you for letting me know~
People are less hesitant to meet up with strangers for the sake of DnD... if they're players.
Irl or online.
Someone might allow you to join a game as a spectator. It's just nothing something people do commonly.
But I'm a yn (young and or youthful necromancer)
Ok?
The randomness lol
I shouldn't be afraid of skeletons...
Yo imagine a darksouls themed campaign
I did a Bloodborne campaign once
Bloodborne is alright a little to confusing for me
It's just about aliens!
Spooky British aliens with muskets, type shit
If skeletons are a trigger for you then as earlier it should be something discussed with your DM & table. If itās something your necromancer character is uncomfortable with then you can always choose to animate zombies instead
Not sure about the alien part i think more like a bloodvirus
It could be funny, yo, tropic thunder?
Well the whole game is a dream loop
True
Old wheelchair baddie being the one in the dream due to the moon alien baddie, type shit
Not really
Sorry king~
This is off-topic guys since itās not related to helping newbies learn D&D
True sorry my bad
Well I was talking about my Bloodborne campaign, my bad (not the lore the dream thing is actually game lore)
My bad i got excited about fromsoft sorry
We can continue talking about Bloodborne lore if you want, in DMS and or off topic
Sure
Hello there guys
I am new in dnd
I donāt know how to play it
Also i have a little info about this game
But i hear about it a lot, in memes, in game podcasts, practically anywhere
So i am trying to know more about it and where can i play it
Is it a board game originally or is it a PC game?
And is it playable on mobile?
Sorry if there is any inconvenience :)

New to dnd and still waiting for my first campaign. Iām learning about the game along with getting around discord but I still havenāt figured out how I would actually find the game on discord once I get invited to one. Do I simply scroll down to the voice channels at the appropriate date and time and ājoinā the campaign? Is it that simple? Thanks!
Usually the game you join will provide any relevant details on what to do.
But a Discord D&D game may have a vocie channel you're expected to join
And possibly a text channel for using bot commands to do dice rolling, etc.
Great! Thank you!

Hey, got a question. Is there a class that says your weapons now use WIS? (Similar to how Warlocks can use CHA in melee attacks)
No class? Sadge.
Alternatively, I can get True Strike through the Sage background. š¤

Query: If a bard casts the Spray of Cards spell, or a similar spell that requires the targets make a Dex saving throw. Does that save go against the Bards Dex rating? Aka if the Bard has a solid dex rating (16 Dex at lvl 9) would that make this spell or similar spells, a good AOE damage dealing option if my Con is considerably lower? Thereby making things like Thunderclap less effective because they get to Con save against my relatively low /baseline con (10)
Am I right out to lunch? pretty new at this and we are doing a campaign where all characters started at L8, so yeah, despite the L9 character theres still a lot im learning.
How do I use looking for players as a dm again
/looking-for players ?
Just this? But how do I type my stuff in
a bardās save dc is based on their charisma
but itās not their score, itās 8 + pb + mod
Pb?
proficiency bonus
Ah yeah right
yup
ah so its non correlative, thanks. Is it the same if it is a multiclass character, in particular a bard ranger cross? Or is it always Charisma no matter what?
Nothing more
Are there things like quick oneshot campaigns? i'm new and wanna get to learn DND through experience
It can be anything really. It can be a four-five hour one shot or a campaigns that goes on for a few months if that is what you were wondering
thanks, where might i find one of those?
You can ask some dms to join and what kind of campaigns you would like to run in
thank you for your time
No problem
my friends will not stop talking about dnd and i just had to see what it was about
Your friend sounds then like a smart person to me
Well then have fun
Finally it's Christmas break, I can ask now
So how does dnd work to start things off? Me and my friends plan on doing a campaign, but everyone doesn't really know how yo play.

Depending on your previous knowledge level, pick from the links above. If you already know roughly what DnD is, I recommend to start reading the Free Rules.
The first chapter explains most of the principles in the game.
If you need something to start you out quick, I recommend running a one shot to see how everyone feels about the experience. There is a great one called Peril in Pinebrook: https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-1625&icid_campaign=free-intro&icid_content=peril-in-pinebrook
It includes a quick primer on the rules as well.
ive never played but it seems fun!
My friend who's the dm is happy to make us suffer after I explained what Difficulty Class
That it also works for jumping actions and etc

Not a newcomer to the game (by a very long way) but a newcomer to posting in this Discord. Which channel would I ask about or discuss upcoming releases on the 2025 schedule?
Try #dnd-discussion , it's pretty general and if there's a better specific location someone will point it out.
Iāll wait until the current lively discussion about player vs character knowledge has died down a bit in that case! š
Me using chatgpt as dm to learn dnd lol
Chatgpt is the worse way to else. D&D no ai model can do d&d correct and itās just unsatisfactory

It's much calmer herer than the general chat! Let us know if you have any questions.
Hello i need some help to make my character, i have a hard time to determine what my spell slots should be they are a first lvl paladin / second lvl warlock
It'll say in the section for multiclassing.
warlock Spellslots dont mix with other spellcasters
just treat the spellslots of either class as if they were multiclassed with a class without any spellcasting
Does anyone have a video or other guide they can personally recommend for building player characters š„ŗ
DnD beyond can create one for you you just have to put in the stats
Oh well that works then! Thx :3
And thereās a few choices to make skills wise
Trying to start playing d&d while i get money because expensive
The basic rules are free, so you don't need to spend any money to try it out.
i just wanna add onto this that beyond kinda sucks
itās a great way to get started but once you get the hang of it iād look at other options
Depends for what you need it for. It's still unmatched in the ease with which characters can be assembled.
I saw the avantris short where Mikey totally roast the platform ššš absolutely noted
āWith dnd beyond you too can stumble around for 5 minutes to make a simple ability checkā
yeah beyond has a case of spaghetti code
lol
some people like it but yeah iād say use it to get the hang of making a character then survey your options to see if theres anything you like more
Alrighty
Canāt beat real dice in my opinion
hey guys are we not allowed to post images in the homebrew section cos i need help but i cant show it
put it on imgur and then link it
okaaaay
Oh absolutely, real physical dice are awesome
I didnāt quite get the thrill of it until I watched ally Beardsley play dnd
Also the crits in Neverafter (if you watch it) are super exciting
I love dnd Iām not big on those live shows tho love vox machine tho even if itās based on critical role

Okay it may be of use when I read how it works maybe I'll understand
hi, i have been trying to figure out how attacks between players and dm monsters work, is there a video that explains in depth that includes how armor and movement works?
This section in the free rules explains: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Combat
I have zero clue how to play Iāve seen a lot of videos and rlly wanna play
thanks :D
In short, an attack works by making an Attack Roll to try and hit the Armor Class of a the enemy.
so they have to roll higher than the armor class to see if they hit?
Hello
They have to roll equal or higher than the AC to hit.
epic, that clears up a lot, thanks XD
Yep Ac= hitting it or missing it if you roll a 10 (d20+mod+prof bonus) and the ac:15 you miss or fail.
If you roll higher then you hit it.
Roll a nat 20 you crit
good to know about that NAT 20 XD
what would be the modifier for a crit?
A natural 20 is automatically a hit. A natural 1 is automatically a miss.
Hello!
When you get a critical hit, you roll the damage dice twice.
So the modifier doesn't play a special role here.
Hey guys, sorry to interrupt, but I have a question. If you play D&D in Google Slides, is it considered D&D?
If you are rolling dice and having fun, sure.
my players are gonna be thrilled XD
Thx Deva
Just wait until one of your monsters crits a player character š
I've never seen D&D in Google Slides, but play however you want. You can play with an Etch-a-sketch if you want.
I am a DM and I made an adventure in the summer but since I saw people doing it digitally I decided to make it in Google slides since we kinda live far from each other.
Do whatever works best for you. Don't let people gatekeep you. If Slides works for you, awesome, keep it up.
Thx!
But I would point out that a virtual tabletop software may also be helpful to you! Some are free, like Owlbear Rodeo.
It's just something to try.
I will try it out later. Thx for the recomandation!
that brings me to my next question, where do i get info sheets for dm screens and maps. i am currently running a dragonwreck isle campaign, but i reckon we need something more unique to us XD
There are lots of maps online, especially for well known campaigns like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
For DM screens, since I do it virtually I just make Google docs.
If you need to come up with one yourself, you could simply draw one, or make us of something like Dungeonscrawl.
Hey Deva. Owlbear Rodeo looks really cool. But I and my players are new and I kinda make stuff up. I don't really follow any guidebook or anything. I think that being free from rules is really fun, like imagining your way. For example, I can make really cool things like a final epic cutscene!
I have a DM screen where I can change out the pages as I need to. So if I need a particular table or something, I can print it up and slide it in.
I don't get it from any specific place, just from wherever I might find something useful.
ooh, what is normally on a dm screen?
I see. Making stuff up is part and parcel of DnD. There are general rules, but when people add their own thing, we usually call that homebrew. It's useful to separate homebrew and the standard rules when talking about the game with others.
There's normally 4 panels filled with all sorts of tables. You can see them here: https://readytorole.com/2017/09/25/ready-review-compare-dungeon-masters-screen-reincarnated/
Ok. So I prefer to homebrew instead of standard rules.
Thx Deva. Your the best!
This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/Stratagem-Masters-4-Panel-Customizable-Inserts/dp/B06X419QQS?th=1
Famous quote by Gary Gygax (one of the creators of D&D) - āThe secret we should never let the gamemasters know is that they don't need any rules.ā
some pretty useful info, i definetly need to get one/print one XD
As you DM more, you'll learn which things are more useful than other things. Which is why I like the customizable ones. I don't really need tables for NPC traits and bonds and stuff... But I do need the table for the Wild Magic Surge. You'll get a feeling as to what you need/don't need as you play more.
rules are part of the fun imo
cus then you get to push them to their limits
Really?
at the end of the day u could just roleplay yeah
They often are, but sometimes they're also in the way.
True
i think having to find a way around a rule is fun too tbh
It's also a bit of a taste question. Some groups enjoy playing strictly by the rules, others don't really care for them.
Sometimes the "Rule of Cool" outweighs what the Rulebook says.
Or the rule of "that makes no bloody sense!"
yeah im a filthy optimiser so i generally stick to RAW
Figured as much heh
The only rule in my rulebook
`This is also why, when you're starting a new group to play DnD with people, it's worth having a conversation about how much you'll be following the rules and how much you'll be homebrewing. That way, everyone understands the game you'll be running.
Some people may not like the game you're running, and that's okay.
Bro. I just noticed something... In my campaign basically every enemy is a mimic.
Every single enemy is a mimic.
I think
Exept the final boss
yeah pulling up to a more casual table with gloom assassin would be a tragedy lmao š
Yep, I'd wager nobody at that table would have a good time.
It's bad if every single enemy is a mimic except the final boss in my campaign?
if your players are having fun it doesnt matter
It's probably going to get a bit boring after about the third mimic.
I feel mimics are so interesting and beloved because they are rare and unexpected.
Yes. But mine just exist and when they a player attack or run if their hole squad is defeated.
I will leave it like it is but i think i should put new tipes of enemy.
NO
I despise mimics with all my being
mimics are somewhat problematic imo. they can cause major trust issues for players and grind games to a halt if everything gets double checked for mimics
Exactly
That's fair, they're not for everyone
Hey everyone, I do not know if this is the appropriate place to share this or not but I am someone who wants to learn how to play D&D. Are there any people here who host campaigns for beginners and help them understand as well. If not thanks anyway.
You'd have to read through #looking-for-players for that!
Thank you, like I said i didn't know if this was the right channel so I appreciate you pointing me in the righ direction
Also would there be any specific reason why I can't use the message feature in that particular channel?
You have to follow the #find-a-game instructions and use the bot commands
Which I believe can be done in any channel where you can type
I appreciate the help...i got something posted thanks to you lol

hello
Hello everyone
hi
So what does it mean when they say bring starting equipment only? And there's like 3 choices for a class and 2 choices from the background
Starting equipment comes from both your class and your background. Classes give you a few binary choices, and some backgrounds do as well
Hello
If i wanna make a Templar build, do i use Paladin? Or what class should i go with?
Optimal meaning?
Its baseline features support the idea of being a holy warrior, so its a good fit. But of course you could roleplay being a templar with many different classes
Oh great thanks alot
Just make sure your not lawful stupid forgive my language. Allot of people make the assumption that lg paladins are infallible and such where they can be wrong and they can screw up. (With out oath breaking.)
btw for those who arenāt aware, lawful stupid is the colloquial meme term for a paladin or cleric or whoever else who is such a zealot that they treat any perceived ānaughtinessā or action against (or even just not in alignment with) their faith by either themselves or others as an extreme threat
sooo basically half of the imperium in warhammer 40k
the reason why this is a thing with paladins specifically is because in older editions, they could have their blessings and powers revoked for very inane stuff like saying something mean (iām being serious) so they need to follow the word of the law constantly and obsessively
this has been changed but certain DMs also still treat paladins as such
Question about character sheets, are they pre made by the player, by the DM, or made by both (player does like class and that stuff and DM does the stats?)
Or is it something else?
How do you find or join a game?
And am I able to make my own moves like magic and martial art techniques and a m I able to pick my own race or is that up to the DM
Character sheets are for the player to track all of their stuff, the standard way would be the player making the character sheet themselves, but new players could be given pre made sheets to speed up the game. Stats are typically decided by the player going by whichever guidelines the DM decides (Point Buy, Array, Rolling)
You can use #find-a-game in here, or try and find friends locally through whatever methods you might have nearby (Clubs, Game Stores, etc)
Ohhhh okay thank you, I was confused a bit
The rulebooks have tons of options for you to choose from, anything not from those options is considered homebrew, and requires you to get your DMs approval
Typically you choose your own race out of the official races, but your DM can choose to reduce or increase the options
Yo is there a way to make your own abilities
Also, is there anything I should do beforehand to set up for a game? Because I really don't have a ton of knowledge on DnD besides the very basic stuff
Reading reading and more reading
The more of the PHB or core rules you read and understand the easier itll be on the people you play with
Alright! I'll do that, but which rule book should I read first because as far as I know there is multiple correct?
As i said, that is called homebrew, and its just equivalent to making up your own rules
What are all the races
The PHB has everything a player could need, but that requires a purchase. You can do fine with the free core rules in the meantime
Your rules sources will contain those, you really shouldnt make a character without a rules reference at hand
K
Alright thank you, ima go on to read up on the rules before doing anything else
All hail the empire..wait wrong game!
Alright I found a pdf, if I'm looking at the right handbook its 293 pages correct?
Not sure, there are also two versions of the PHB for 5e rn, the 2014 and 2024 version
Either should be fine for understanding the basics
But specifics might change based on what your table uses
Start with the 2024 because more people may be using that unless stated but the rules are similar with 2024 having some major changes so
Alright ty, just checked and the one I was looking at was the 2014 one
Ima read the 2024 one and then a bit of the 2014

No need to read both if you read one
Oh aight, that saves a bit of time then
Once again thank you for your help
No problem and good luck
Also, would you suggest to watch videos of other people playing it ontop of reading the phb?
It can help sure, but everyone plays D&D differently, in both how they adhere to the rules and how they style their gameplay
So i wouldnt use it like a "this content creator played it that way, you should do it too"
Understanding the core rules as written is a good place to then start and interpret from
š
Is this suitable for learning to play with my kids/husband?
Hey, im new to playing dnd but ive watched a good amount of dnd content/know the very basics but havent played myself nor have a game to join. Would you recommend creating a character first or finding a game beforehand?
Creating a character is never a bad idea, it can be very likely that the DM youll find will have you make a character with them using whatever procedures they use, but that doesnt mean thinking about and making a version of your character beforehand is bad
Got it, ill start there. thank you
my wife and i are looking for a game anyone down to guied some new players
#find-a-game can help you find a game
D&D is a collaborative storytelling Table Top Role Playing Game (TTRPG)
A group of folks get together with one person taking the role of Dungeon Master and the others players.
The Dungeon Master sets the stage and helps guide the story, decides what dice rolls are needed and for what, and what constitutes success for those dice rolls.
The players roleplay characters
there are video games based on DnD, but its not one itself
?tag new online
same as it does in pretty much any game
Damage:
If you beat the target's Armor Class (AC) in an attack or if the target is indicated to have taken damage (spell effect for example), then damage dice are rolled and the creature loses Hit Points equal to the damage done.
So my dice roll is ny damage?
Sorry, I'm slow.
So let's say your character swings their sword at a goblin enemy - you are making an attack roll
You roll a d20 and add your strength modifier and proficiency bonus to the result (assuming your proficient with using a longsword)
If those results are higher than the goblin's Armor Class, you hit
Oh damn, sweet
Then you roll the damag dice for your longsword - which is a d8 or a d10 depending on if you're holidng it in one hand or two.
So armour class cannot exceed 20?
I assume d10 for two handed
There are some tough monsters out there!
Oh no...
Is armor class for battles and encounter and difficulty class for anything else?
Armor class is usually only relevant in combat
Thanks alot, I'm helping our dm learn while also learning myself. Thanks man!
No worries! You may want to go though this section of the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#PlayingtheGame
Ohh, alright alright!!.
One last question though!
How does damage calculate?
My dice roll+proficiency is my damage?
It's explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#DamageRolls
Each weapon, spell, and damaging monster ability specifies the damage it deals. You roll the damage dice, add any modifiers, and deal the damage to your target.
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifierāthe same modifier used for the attack rollāto the damage roll.
so it's dice roll + ability modifier (for weapons anyways)

Oki!!
So I want to start a dnd campaign with my friends on roll20 am I supposed to build a map for us to play on or what? this is my first time ever doing anything dnd related
Maps are technically optional - you can run games using what's called "theater of the mind" where you describe the environment and use general ranges of "long, medium, short".
That said, maps and tokens can help folks understand things better (and sometimes is critical for some folks who can't envision things based on oral/text descriptions alone).
So... if you and your players want maps to help them see/understand the environment, go for it.
There's useful map making resources in the pinned message on #dnd-maps
oh then Im fine on the map making
what artificer subclass should i go for, if i want a character that makes Turret
artillerist
Artillerist is quite literally the turret Artificer subclass!
sorry for the late reply but how would I run theater of mind?
You just describe the scene to the players.
Something like this:
"You enter the dimly lit, abandoned prison. The smell of rust is heavy in the air, but it's completely silent. You can see several iron doors ahead, each belonging to one of the twelve cells in this block. Your torch doesn't light the hallway enough to see the other end from where you are. What do you do?"
Then you wait for their responses and narrate what happens based on their choices and questions.
oh i misunderstood I thought it was setting in roll 20 my bad
Nope. it's relying on your descriptions and people's imaginations. Some people prefer running games that way. Others find it a bit of a handicap. But in combat, ToTM would be describing groups as "These groups are close enough to engage in melee combat with each other", "these groups are in Charge [move and attack] range", "these groups are in shortbow range", "these groups are in longbow range."
Hello! I'm new to DND and me and my friends are playing on R20, whenever my friend rolls a saving throw, two results come up, why is that?
Can someone explain to me how paladin spells work? Some spells you canāt use unless you choose a specific oath correct? And is there some spells all paladins get?
that's just in case you have advantage or disadvantage on the roll. If you have advantage, pick the high result, if you have disadvantage, pick the low one. If you have neither, pick the first.
It rolls both directly to speed up play
Paladins have oath spells, which are spells they have always prepared. There is a general paladin spell list that all paladins can pick from: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#PaladinSpellList
Paladins have always access to their whole spell list, but they can only prepare a certain number of those spells every day
Oath spells are always prepared and don't count towards the number of allowed prepared spells
Ohhh that makes so much more sense thank you to both of you guys
Oh I understand now! He didn't notice that he has that enabled, thank you so much!
Hey! Looking for a group to play in! Any suggestions?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
#learn-to-play message has some other suggestions, too.
I need help understanding charcter sheets
Sure, what's got you stuck?
everything twin I played dnd for the first time yesterday and i played a oneshot with a quick charcter sheet
It was a premade character sheet, then?
but i wanna accutally make a charter i can take on campains and get emersed with and I dont understand dnd beyond sheet
yeah
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
I wanna make a charter kinda like gill from street fighter so fire ice and life being at his center but i litterly dont even know what im looking at at the website lol
im a lot confused
A Warrior of the Elements monk could fit.
for hand to hand combat and elemental damage I would take a look at the elements monk subclass (in the PHB, not in the free rules though)
But I also don't know what you're looking at.
Gonna need more info before we can help you here.
can we like vc or sum ion even know what im looking at
That's the site, yes. That site has many pages.
Have you found your way into the character builder yet?
Go to Collections > My Characters > Create a Character
yes
This post can probably help you through the rest, then.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1059-how-to-create-your-first-dungeons-dragons
You probably want to pick Standard if you're creating the character yourself.
The first page is all settings. If you have a DM already, you can ask them which settings to use. Otherwise, I'd just leave them all at their defaults and head on to the picking a class.
First think of a concept which you did, then loom into species and classes that closely match your style. The rest is self explanatory, your background is what your character was befor hand be it a aclyte, criminal ext. then begin walks you through the rest. Red your class closely as the phb will suggest what stats to focus on.
im interested in buying dnd books, ive seen people using the 2014 edition of the player's handbook and havent seen once the 2024 edition, is there a reason? or just they didnt find a reason to buy the newest one
The new one is recent
A couple months for people to add it to their collection compared to 10 years means theres gonna be quite the difference in who owns what
And the new monster Manuel isnāt out yet
alright well i guess ill add the 2024e player's handbook on my list, are there any other books to consider?
Are you planning on ever being a Dungeon Master? The Dungeon Master's Guidebook can be useful. The 2024 one is much better organized than the 2014 version IMO. Great at helping DM's run their D&D games.
If you want to be a player and expand your options, monsters of the multiverse for species, Tashaās couldren of everything for subclasses inc artificer, guide to the sword coast for more subclasses

oh thanks for this, didn't know that command existed xD
Im mainly focusing on being a player
I dont see myself becoming a DM anytime soon
tho still, any reccomendations for a new D&D player? (I know a little bit about what is D&D and characters creation)
Oh damn
Thanks man i appreciate it
Hmmm. Become familiar with the game rules (don't have to memorize them but knowing where to find things in the rule book is helpful), remember it's a collaborative game and don't try and be the Main Character, focus on having fun and helping others you're playing with have fun.
Alrighty, thanks for the tips!
Knowing your character features and how they work is also very helpful
Lost mines of phandelver is a good starter game if you want somthing short- any of the starter adventures works to.
okay, I'll check it out
Lost mines is more or less low stakes with an easy curve. Kinda cozy tbh.
The starters I canāt speak of due to not having played em
Lost mines is also just a great little adventure
Very close to the core ethos of d&d imo
Peril in pine brook is free on dndbeyond
I alsmot finished to but the game fell apart right at the final boss
Dumb question but
Wym expand my options? Like different races, equipment etc.?
Monsters is more pkayiblenraces like kobolds and gobos.
Tasha has new subclasses
Ooh i got you
Thank you
Additional D&D books provide new subclasses, items, spells, rules, etc.
Fizbans is more if you like Dragonborn and want more options
Cant lie human is the only one i like
for now š
Whaaaat how so
Lots of fun things to try out and play
Dwarves!
kobolds are the best
Meepo aprroves of this message
You can even play as a human!
Of course
Human is the one i vibe with the most
Me too brother, me too
Same goes with the builds i use
I never used a full on wizard/magic only or archer
Always with a sword or fist fighting
Even though i do love me some range and cool spells
But i only do that with a mixed build
Yo does dnd alrd have lore or? Like is the world pregenerated and we can customize or do we start from nothing
There are existing settings and lores you can choose from
The "default" one being the forgotten realms setting
You can use official D&D settings or create your own.
But you are free to change, adjust, or make your own
Tysm
Hi, can anyone help me make a character sheet
im totally lost, tbh ive been interested in dungeons and dragons for a while, but i live in a place where almost no one has even heard of it (and i also dont have any close friends irl). Since i dont have access to the board game or people to play with, ive been trying to figure out how to play the game online.
Every time i look it up, it feels overwhelming wherever i go it seems like i either need a group of friends, have to pay for something, or theres just a lot of stuff i dont understand.
If anyone could tell me where to start or if youre looking for someone new to join your group iād really appreciate it if you could invite me. As ive said before ive been interested in dnd for a while and really wanna try a campaign.
#learn-to-play and check the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Then if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)
We strongly recommend giving the free rules a look.
And then maybe watch some folks play D&D - check YouTube or Twitch for D&D streams (please note many of these are for entertainment purposes first, not actually running the game Rules As Written)
thx a lot!
If your main problem is finding people to play with, #find-a-game is a resource in this server. There are also many other servers you can use to find a group, and also social media like reddit
thx ill check them one by one really really appreciate the help!
Howdy! Is there a channel for asking character creation questions? Iāve about five characters made (or updated would be more accurate) recently that Iād like to create an actual character sheet (rn theyāre concepts)
#character-discussion or #optimization depending on what youāre trying to do
in this case you probably want #character-discussion
How do i build my character on this discord?
#dnd-newcomers message you dont "build a Character on this discord" but this shows you how to make a character
Oh ok
We can help you build a character over in #character-discussion though
Honestly I got lucky when I found a..āchristan groupā that allows warlocks. And a good/interesting game called darkdesigns. Sadly I am fully pushed away by paid gms asā¦2 paid games fell apart 1: because either the gm is a scammer and or simply people didnāt vibe so yeah, and the other
Life
Where can i find players to play adnd with the classical adnd modules.
Probably #dnd-elder-editions
You can use the LFG channels (see #find-a-game to learn how to use them). Just make sure to note what edition of D&D you're using.
Im making a circle of land druid and players started telling me druid circle of land is meta gaming? Still new to dnd so idk what they mean I understand some builds for clerics or paladins are seen as broken but its the only subclass dnd beyond comes with is circle of land too powerful or something for 5e?
Saying circle of land druid is meta gaming makes no sense
Sounds like they dont understand what meta gaming is
i assume they mean power gaming but its not that either
Did they tell you why they think it's metagaming? Cause yeah, that's a weird take
No idea i heard best for starting players and for new druids
me when using the best subclass is metagaming
Meta gaming is taking ooc knowage I came like:
ooc: trolls are week to fire
Ic: your character states such even though ic they dknt have that knowage
yeah metagaming is using knowledge you have that your character doesnt
I try to avoid that first rule i learned
i assume they mean power gaming which is just trying to make strong characters
theres nothing wrong with doing that though and land druids arent particularly good so
Maybe they think im trying to make my character over powered? Im making a support druid so idk if thats supposed to be game breaking
its not
No the fm is being a jerk
Ok cool
Im trying to make a build thats useful can help slow people down heal and buffs
fair enough
Is there a way to deal damage to an enemy without exactly hitting them directly?
saves
Yes
Iāve seen bonfire deal damage to enemies that walked into it or got pulled in
Saves? Saving throws?
So the armor class doesn't matter in this situation?
yeah
AC only matters for attacks, lots of spells and environmental effects dont make attacks
Fire ball counts towards aoe damage right?
yeah
So technically its a dex save of 16 if I remember correctly
They still take half damage
So does shield cancel out fire balls or spells or does it just block it from the caster?
The save DC would be based on the caster
Oh dang i was told completely different good thing I didnāt try that out yet lol
i think u should probably read up on the basic rules
and dont trust whoever is telling you these things š
Yeah i got free dnd beyond guide i went over it but might have to again
Anyone from Wausau, Wisconsin? I'm looking for a dm to help bring my campaign idea to life. And a few players as well once I got the campaign good.
Iām not gonna lie I just want somebody to play DND with
#find-a-game might help you then
Does protection from good and evil count towards vampires ?
Until the spell ends, one willing creature you touch is protected against certain types of creatures: aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, ***and undead***
Vampires are quintessential undead, so that spell is made to counter them
hey, can i use an elven lineage spell as a level 1 fighter??
Abilities/spells granted by your race are usable regardless of the class you take
okay, thanks!
hi
Ello there
Doin alright, did you have any questions?
well
a few actually....haha
i always had this huge interest on dnd and i finally decided that i want to have thi beautiful hobby, so i was watching a few videos and heard a few recomendations and one of them was to join a discord server with people that actually know about the game
and i was thinking about buying the starter set or the essentials set
or maybe both, so i wanted to ask someone if it was a good idea to buy any of those 2 or not
š
Depends, do you wanna play irl or online
Then yes those sets are good fun starters
do you have any recomendations?
Between the 2 starter kits?
yup
Whichever campaign interests you more
One has the Lost Mines campaign and the other one is stormwreck isle right?
well i was watching this yt guy talking about them and he said that both the starter set and the essensials set were set in the same city, yet on different places
and he said that ch from starter set could be use on the essensials set, o he recommends to buy both
use the starter to guide yourself and friends through the beginning of dnd and then go tho esssensials which is a more complicated of some sorts campaing
Ahh essentials kit is ice spire peak not lost mines
I wouldnt worry about buying both rn, but ice spire does go to a higher level
Ok i see, so ice spire might have been meant to continue off the old starter kit
The one with lost mines
Lost mines is a wonderful adventure, i obviously dont know much about ice spire
Could definitely be neat to go from one to the other since both are in phandalin
Yo
Yo
Been interested in DnD for a while, dont know where to start so i figured id look here? Dont know anyone nearby that plays figured there was a way to do a playthrough via discord
As well as a way to learn
Yeah you can play online in various ways, this place being a great way to find people to play with
We can also help answer any questions you might have
Unfortunately i dont have one of the neat copy pastes or bot commands with the new player article that other people post here
If you scroll around a bit you should be able to find it tho
I would definitely check out #learn-to-play and this channel's pins, both of which have a bunch of useful links including the free rules.

so DnD is a Tabletop roleplaying game. a group of people tell a story together with dice. one player is the dungeon master and is in charge of the rules and the world, while the others play a single character each and go on an adventure in that world.
the free rules are linked above, you dont need to read all of it but the first 1-3 chapters should give you a good idea on how the game works
Ok
Can i roll digital dices without a digital character sheet ?
Like can you just roll dices as a separate feature ?
As long as you have some way to roll, it doesn't matter if its "tied" to your sheet

If youāre going to buy something for the game and will be starting with a group of brand-new players, those two products are, individually or together, the best bang for your buck. Each box has a slimmed-down rules subset, 4-5 pregenerated characters, one full set of dice, a poster map of the same area of the world, and an adventure that will take your characters from levels 1-4. The starter set adventure is better structured, but the Essentials kit has some neat handout cards and probably still has codes on D&D Beyond (think, digital library) for three follow-up adventures that would take the characters to roughly level 13.
New starter replaces Lost Mine with Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Somebody had the intelligent thought that people new to Dungeons & Dragons might want to⦠yāknow, fight a dragon or something.
Lost Mine and Stormwreck Isle are both fairly straightforward, semi-linear plots. Icespire is much more of a sandbox.
There is a dragon in lost mines
That will most Lilly kill you if you fight it

Chat I'm a new dm and I'm hosting a game with 3 of my friends and they're all starting at lvl 1 and...well they want to fight a boss monster what do you guys suggest?? Bugbear or a Harpy sounds too hard
(party is comprised of barbarian, wizard, rogue and ye no healers)
Ik but I dont know if I should level em up before a boss fight
I would, level 1 doesnt really leave room for nuance, its very much get one shot or not
Good news is healers arent important in 5e, just remind your party to regularly short rest and dont be stingy with healing potion
Ye I'm def gonna do that
A lot of campaigns start at level 2 or 3 to avoid the issues with early levels, so rushing those levels definitely isnt a bad idea
As for leveling up mid session, that can be a bit of a hinderance
But you could work around it by asking the players to be ready with their level 2 version of their characters
Level 2 usually doesnt require any big choices
Thanks that was a good suggestion
Hey folks please do not discuss adventure spoilers outside of #1029833015423143957

How crippled would I make myself if I am planning to make a sorcadin and do level 1 pally, and then at level 2 pick up a level 1 sorc and then continue with pally until level 6 then cross over? I know it's better to go straight from 1->6 Pally, but I basically just want the flavour of an elemental knight. I am just trying to make a PC similar to Clive from FF16. I've never multiclassed before.
No idea, but if you like the idea. Give it a try. At worst you'll die first session.
Interesting!
nah that works pretty well
its common to pick up a caster level to tide you over to pally 6 even if its technically better to rush aop for a sorcadin
Hi, completely new to DnD!
Starved for a campaign to play with groups in, but not confident in my ability for a 1-on-1 RP, and previous attempts to play non-DnD campaigns with my friend group have failed to start or go past 1 day.
Only background information I have is from CritCrab videos.
My schedule is very volatile and limited. Regardless, I would love a proper introduction to this game and a great first experience
can a Lock-Warlock use a Shortsword?
Hey if something says I can take on a creatureās statistics except for their CHA, WIS, AND INT, but not their proficiencies or class features, what does that mean? Like when Iām looking at a creatureās stat block, are all their actions the same as class features? Itās a homebrew class/feature but I figure this is just a general question
Specifically says something like āyou retain your INT, CHA, and WIS but otherwise take on the creatureās statistics. You do not gain their proficiencies, knowledge, or class featuresā
Itās mage hand press complete witch. I have a screen shot of the feature from the book, I can just send it to ya real quick? All good if not, itās online. Just canāt tell whatās good about this feature
I mean obviously there are good bits, but I canāt tell what itās limiting with that sentence
