đ cool cool, so you've got your starting species and class figured, do you know what background you want? You mentioned wanting to portray a certain character, whomst might that be?
Yeah, hit me
Done
Okay cool, hell yeah.
I would say for his background, you'll probably want Criminal for Alert or Entertainer for Musician, both I think fit him pretty well.
Criminal and musician
I think it would be very funny
But if I have to pick one I would say criminal for alert
You could ask your DM if you can swap the origin feats or make a custom background to get the best of both worlds
I would think you're looking at Swashbuckler for subclass?
Idk what that is but, yes
What ever is easiest
Allow me to shoot you a link for you to peruse, one secco
Hey I just joined and have never played dnd yet, what should I do?

Welcome! The bot post above has some great resources for you. My recommendation would be to start with the Free Rules (under the Quick Links section)
And if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here. We are more than happy to help
Thanks!
curious, but how much does equipment usually cost in dnd?
like for starters maybe some armor or weapons
ah, guess i didnt manage to get that far in my reading in the rules
thanks for it!
do goliaths hate dragonborns in anyway? im tryna find some info about it so i can say a dragonborn helped him learn draconic that was travelling with them
but i dont know if they have any bad blood because i cant find anything about it
That kind of stuff is gonna be specific to whatever setting you're playing in and the DM.
Unless there's something specific you can point to that would have given you that impression, I'd just say no, they have no particular prejudice as a general rule.
gotcha, thanks for it
Iâm looking for someone to help me get into the game. A while back I read through the rules and such and tried to do it on my own, but I think I genuinely need another person to help me.
If you want we can do it together, i found a DM but he's reading up on all the rules as he played in 2014
dont know if he is ready this weekend or the next but he does seem a bit experienced

#learn-to-play has good resources for you
Alright i'll give them a read tysm.
Okay I made a character so i wait to find somebody now?
Take a look at #find-a-game and read it all the way through. Then take a look in #looking-for-players
Also, you can ask your irl friends and family to see if they wanna play!
My older brother does play it but he'd have no interest in playing with me lol, I'll give it a read through fully thanks!

In the bot post above, under the "Quick Links" section, you'll find the "D&D Free Rules." Chapter 1 is how to play, and chapter 2 is how to make a character
K ty
Holy hell that is a lot of reading
Time to sit down and read an entire rule book
Yes, the D&D rules are books. There are tools to help make it easier to learn, if you're more of an auditory learner. You could consider watching some introductory videos on youtube as well. Reading at least some of the rules is unavoidable though.
I tried watching YouTube but all it talked about was the character sheet and I don't have a printer to print one that is why I don't know how to make a character
Also, you don't have to go through the entire thing all at once. Take the chapter that describes each of the classes, for example. If you know which class you want to play, you can focus on that one. If you still aren't sure which one interests you, you can skim them until you find one that looks fun
It would probably be better to start with How to Play, before you jump into making a character
K
@fallen surge I watched a video about the rules and how to play and I understand some of it but not all
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them
We'd be more than happy to help clarify anything
If I don't have a printer to print a character sheet to keep track of my stuff what do I do bc it said everything about my character will be on that sheet down to its stats levels gear and equipment but I don't have a printer to print one what do I do
You could create a digital character sheet
Websites like D&D Beyond have automated character creators that can help guide you through the process and produce a character sheet for you. The down side being that you can only use character creation options from the books that you purchase through their website. There are also open ended character sheets that you can create and edit manually, like a PDF of a paper character sheet, and you just type in the boxes. Or you can make or find recreations of character sheets for Exel or Google Sheets
Okay well I'm going to check on Excel and Google sheets because I rather not pay to add stuff to my character
Well, D&D beyond does allow you to use any content from the Free Rules for free. If you use a manual character sheet, you still need to access the content through legal means. The free rules only contains the bare minimum needed to play the game, and most of the character creation options are found in the full version of the rule books.
Are you saying I can't make a manual one without needing to buy the books still
You could check if your local library has the books available.
I live in the boonies I'd have to drive about 40 miles
Hello,
I am a brand new to DnD and I have decided to do my first game as a DM.
I am designing a DnD campaign, I want it to be a short one 2-4 sessions, inspired from Lost mines of Phandelver.
I want help with 3 things -
**1. How long does a session usually lasts? - say we have 1 major combat in it for example. **(I have only seen youtubers do it)
2. If there are any races/species that are much harder to manage in comparison than others for a brand new DM?
3. What do players expect from a session 0?
All opinions from players and DMs are welcome. Please feel free to give your advice.
As I said, the Free Rules contain the bare minimum youâll need to play. You can build a complete character using just free content. Youâll just be limited in your choices. The rest of the options are found in rule books. Think of these rule books like novels. If you wanted to read a novel, you need to find a legal way to access them. You can buy it in a book store, buy a digital version online, rent it from a library, or borrow it from a friend.
Question if I download dnd beyond what I still be able to play in any kind of dnd campaign with only having the free content
Yes. You wonât be restricted at all based on what content you have or donât have
-
A typical D&D session lasts from 2-4 hours
-
So long as you stick to the official content, you should be perfectly fine. I would just recommend you avoid any homebrew.
-
This is a much bigger question, but in its simplest terms, session 0 is meant to set expectations for the campaign. Players can talk about what they do or do not want from the adventure. You can talk about what types of topics people are or are not comfortable with. What type of adventure this will be. Etc.
You can get much better advice about session 0 if you ask in #dm-discussion and talk to fellow DMs
Thanks Colossus, I just want to get started so im just asking basic questions here. I feel like I will learn the best while actually doing it.
this was very helpful.
Yes I will. Ty again.
My pleasure
K downloading DND beyond now
@fallen surge I went to the library in DND beyond and downloaded all the free books was that a good idea
Sure. Most of those will be adventures, rather than character creation options, but free is free.

If I don't have them how do I claim them
I can't even find most of these
Just click on the link and it will bring you to the page to claim it
Yeah, it seems the list is out dated. That seems to be no longer available.
Yeah about a quarter of them were unclaimable
But I got done claiming them but what do they do
@fallen surge I'm making my character is it ok to use my gamertag as the name or do I have to think of one
You should come up with a real name for your character. This isnât a video game. This is supposed to be a real person living in the D&D world that you will role play as
Will LaPlace work
It's not pronounced how it looks
I canât really tell you what will or will not work. Itâs your character. If you want that to be their name, then thatâs their name. If your wondering if it will fit in the game-world, thatâs something youâd have to ask your DM
Yep, thatâs fine.
But to give you a quick explanation, D&D is a social game, where you play just by talking to other people. Thereâs no overarching system or website or anything that you have to go to to play the game. There are tools that can help make the game easier. But the game itself is played in your imagination. So you join a campaign by talking to people, and agreeing to play the game together. Thatâs all there is to it. Then you just have to schedule a time and figure out how youâll communicate.
If you want to find people to play with in this server, the #find-a-game channel has instructions for how to do so. You can use the server bot to make a post in #looking-for-dm or you can browse through the posts in #looking-for-players to see if any are a good fit for you
Hey what is the difference between milestone and XP
And which one should I pick
Most of these things I don't understand
Milestone leveling is when you level up after specific moments in the story, or after overcoming specific challenges. XP leveling is when you gain XP for beating challenges, and level up after a certain amount of XP is gained. You donât choose which method to use. They are different game styles, so when you join a campaign, your DM will tell you which version that game is using
So Don't mess with it
For now, yeah. You can set it to whatever the DM tells you to after you join a campaign
So do I just not mess with anything on the first page
@fallen surge Can a paladin dual wield one handed long swords
You can hold a long sword in each hand if you want to, but long swords do not have the light property, so you donât get any special benefits for doing so. You wonât get any additional attacks or anything like that
Making a character is confusing
How much of the rules have you read?
I watched a video that explained some but I didn't understand some of it
And most of it was all about the character sheet which I'm not using that I'm using dnd beyond
Videos can help supplement your knowledge, and clarify things you donât understand, but at the end of the day, you do have to actually read the rules at some point. That is how you learn what everything means.

Under the Quick Links section in this bot post, the link to Introductory Videos is a very good YouTube series called Handbooker Helper. Their content is a bit outdated, since it was made before the 2024 rules change, but if you need a starting point, those videos can help. Just remember you should also double check the actual rules at some point as well, to see what may have changed from the videos

Yea, 5e is the current edition of dnd.
They did what you might call "5e revised" this year, with new adjusted versions of the 5e Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide books.
Think of it like a major balance patch with months of hype, going back and touching up on some balance issues and quality of life in many places.
Various ways. The basic calculation is 10 + your Dex modifier. Armor also increases it.

Do goliaths have deep voices?
and if so, when i talk in character do i have to make a deep and goliath-y voice when speaking as my character?
I don't think any races have defined voices, and voice hardly affects the game, so would be up to you!
Personally I can definitely see them having deeper voices
And making character voices isn't a requirement for the game!

I just heard about it, so yeah it seemed fun so i figured id try join a discord to attempt to learn theres just so many members it seems kind of intimidating still even after I had convinced myself to join
As this is the official Dungeons and Dragon's Discord server, yes we do have a large community. But welcome to the server!
If you're new to D&D, we encourage you to take a look at #learn-to-play and check the pinned messages here in the channel for useful information and resources to help you learn the game.
Check #channel-guide to find the most appropriate channel for a specific D&D topic and feel free to ask any specific questions
I understand, its just hard to fit into places for me
I want to create an oc but id need help like every step, yk what i mean?
D&D just calls those a character. The free rules go over the process of creating a character sheet.
Character discussion would be the place for that if you need help as well
its the same thing but okay
i understand
where would i find the free rules then? or well the sewction
oh ok
Also can be found in #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel
yeah oki
thank you for your help, I just hope ill be able to get into dnd
so the first thing i should do is choose a class?
First thing to do is give #learn-to-play a read IMO
right now im reading the race thing as it said to choose a race first
They all kind of go togehether - class, species, and background
Everyone has their own creative process. If you wish to start think about the character's class or backstory first you're encouraged to do so.
okay, im sorry im trying my best
You're doing fine
So far dragonborn seems cool to me, but i should also look at some more of races
When making a character I think of a vague concept and then look at race class background to see what fits
Well thats the thing, i dont really know what i want. maybe more bad then good? im not sure
giving me a headache already sob
yeah, i think ill do a dragonborn
Hello
hi hru
You don't need to have a solid idea right now. The creative process can be slow sometimes.
You can always change things. It's not like you're in an ongoing game.
I know
Im starting to look at dragonborn liking it more, but im trying to understand the breath system and heritige and such
Hai!!!
hey
Greeting
Most libraries (in the US/Canada) allow you to search their catalog online, and to make requests either for an interlibrary loan or to add something to their collection.
Thereâs a huge spectrum of how people do things here. Most (popular) actual play streams have folks who are professional actors, so of course theyâre going to do full-on voices/accents/etc. some folks might still do dialog as their character, but in their normal voice, generally describing things in first person. Some folks only narrate their characterâs actions in third person and describe the dialog rather than act it. None of these are wrong, and the only one more ârightâ than the others (if at all) is whatever your table prefers.
Is anyone able to help me, Im a new dnd person and dont now much ab it along with my friend however we would like to learn. We want to have a fun community game where its all just mess around and fun but idk where to specifically go since i need a dm and some players. any help is appreciated
If thereâs a game/comic store near you, check their calendar.
there is nothing like that near me which is why I turned to online
You can go to find a dm if you and your friends are looking for one, otherwise is there any other questions like how to come up with a character or something?
honestly yeah theres a decent am i gotta learn however would i be able to in just looking at yt videos online? or is it better to learn from someone
I would say that some videos can be good to understand the basics, but in person is always better and to just learn along
ahh ok ty do you suggest joining a game or would making one be better to know it wont be as serious? even for community games cus of learning
I would suggest joining a game by asking a dm, many here are ahppy to take in new players and being a dm can be a bit stressful so its better to have one who knows what they are doing
i get it now ill watch a couple videos learn the basics and find a dm and game that is happy to take me in tysm i learnt alot
yeah, think also about what kind of character you want to play and how you would like to role play, tho I would suggest looking for a game soon so that you have one (The videos are just for extra)
well i have made a character before and i like to be a monk who uses fists or blunt weapons like staffs haha when u say i should find a game soon should i find one like tonight or should i watch a couple vids tonight and find one a bit later
I would say go to https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 and see if anyone is available
Can someone please explain what each part of the character sheet is
ok tysm
This is my first time
Anything specific?
What kinds of points?
Standard
Oh in point buy?
Do you have six options?
Well how it works if that a 10 is standard/normal human and any two above that will give you a +1 so if you have 14 you will get +2 for something, you have strength dexterity, consecution, intelligence, wisdom and charisma. Strength is for weapons like big swords and axes and is also used for checks like pushing a boulder. Dex is for weapons like a dagger or smaller weapons, it also increases armor class that makes you harder to hit. Con increases your toughness and your HP, itâs also helps against being poisoned. Int is usually for Wizards and helps you know how many spells you can cast, itâs used for history and basically how smart you are. Wis is your knowledge like how to survive in the wild and is used by some classes in spell castings. Cha is for how good you are at talking, like to lie or to see if someone else if lying, is also used for some spell casting
Quick correction: seeing if somebody else is lying is Insight, which is typically Wisdom-based.

Read #find-a-game carefully (the commands start with /looking-for)
Hi, I am new to DND and would love to play online somehow. Cant figoure out Roll20 wtouth paying tons of money
VTTs (Virtual Tabletops) are not required to play D&D online although they can help
Welcome. If you have questions about Roll20 specifically, it would be best to ask them in #third-party since it is a third party program, but Roll20 is both free to use, and an optional part of the game
Thank you, I joined to find someone to play with using discord and D&D beyond.
D&D is played in the imagination, so if you want to play online, all you really need is a group of people, and a way to communicate with each other. Roll20 is a Virtual Table Top, as UndyingNoob mentioned. VTTs are typically used as digital battle maps, to make combat easier to visualize.
If you want to find a group to play with, the #find-a-game channel has advice and instructions for how to do so. In this server, we have the #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players channels. You can use the server bot to fill out a form, and it will generate a post for you in one of those channels. Or, you can browse through the posts that are there and see if any are a good fit for you
Thank you @fallen surge
My pleasure
what vtts do you recommend
Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are the two best options if you want something that's free to use. FoundryVTT requires a purchase but is a far more in depth and powerful program. Talespire is also one that you have to purchase, but it uses 3D models instead of a 2D map and tokens, so that would be a very fun one if you feel comfortable working with that system. D&D Beyond also has their own VTT, but its still in beta, and can only be used by DMs that have a Master Tier subscription to their site.
cheers
can your armor class be reduced by enemies?
It's possible that there are some enemies that have specific abilities that could lower your AC, but it's extremely rare.
nice

Unfortunately, finding a group is the secret final boss of DnD. How long have you been at it? It's not unusual to have to search for a few days or even over a week to find the right game.
Me to buddy đ but I am trying #looking-for-players
its ok to start at higher level like 3 or 5
where do i see my books?
Also take a look at some of the community servers ( #looking-for-community) - they may have D&D games/groups you can join there as well.
Some of these communities are a bit overwhelming with difficult to understand aspects for a newbie. I just want to sit down and roleplay for a few hours every week đ
wich one? anyone playing this weekend?
Think I messed up with the bot commands last night, just wanted to open up a test form to see the text boxes. Do you complete the form in the find-a-game channel or the looking-for-dm/players channel?
In any channel that lets you send messages.
The find a game channel you send the command and fill out the form you get in response
Hello everyone,
I am new to DnD and i have the honor to be the DM of our group (all first timers) đ
Can someone suggest a site, where i can get some paper minis?
I want to start with a low budget, but i think minis will help me to coordinate the fights^^
What books are dampiers, hex blood and reborn in? better question, how do lineages work? and what book are they in?
Might wanna ask the folks in #dnd-minis
Van Richtenâs Guide to Ravenloft is where all that is
Thank you đ
If im not mistaken, lineages are basically an alternate race/species option that essentially means you started as something else, but you were changed by the mists of ravenloft.
where do you manage it in dnd beyond?
Do you own Ravenloft in DDB?
yes
So when you go into create a character, that first page asks you what sources you want to include, is Ravenloft toggled on?
I think that would count as expanded rules. But you don't have any options for it later when you're choosing your species?\
nop
Darn. Yeah Im not sure then. Maybe ask about it in #ddb-support
Nah, some things are a little confusing. Glad you found it!
Yeah it's just in this lineages dropdown

Hi
I'm old help, every daybI am closer to death
how do you add in like fay ancestery or elven linage on example dhampir character sheet?
If you were an elf and became a dhampir in-game, youâd keep your skill proficiencies and replace everything else.
You don't
You only get: "any skill proficiencies you gained from it and any climbing, flying, or swimming speed you gained from it." (referring to the original race) when you become a Dhampir. All other features are ignored
If youâre starting the game as a dhampir, you get any two skill proficiencies of your choice instead.

Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
Ooo thank you
How can I find someone to play with (online) on DnD beyond
If you want to search on D&D Beyond, you can try the forums here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/looking-for-players-groups
If you just want to play using D&D Beyond, thereâs lots of other places you can search, too.
Again, #find-a-game has instructions for finding a group here on this server.
Hello I was wondering what if I'm not the class they chose for me?
Sorry, Iâm not sure what youâre asking. đ
Sorry
What class who chose?
Your characterâs personality is up to you.
If your group asked you to play a rogue and youâd rather play a different class, Iâd encourage you to discuss that with your group.
No I mean in the dnd beyond đ
Are you asking about the suggested personality traits from your background?
You can use or ignore those as you see fit. If you want to type in your own personality traits, you can.
Oh đą
How would I go about creating a game here?
Check out the #find-a-game channel. It will you how to create postings for players
is it posible to watch a Dm to se how everyting works on DDB
Not on DDB, but youtube has a million actual play D&D channels
you have oen specific in mind?
DDB is just a toolset/storefront for D&D. It's like how Steam is a storefront/launcher for games, but isn't the exclusive means to do so.
The classic ones are things like Critical Role or Dimension20. Those are really good shows, but keep in mind that they're professional actors and therefore set the roleplay and drama bar kind of impssibly high. But they do give you a great idea of how the game works and what DMs do
Hey, im very new to DND but i do understand some parts, anyone got an idea how i can understand it more?

so,, with characters,,, like where would i find thed different like races n stuff? i have some designs and ideas for characters but idunno if like they'd work w and rules,,,
All possible official species options can be found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/species
The ones included in the Free Rules will be accessible to everyone. Other options you will have to pay for, or find another way to access them such as borrowing a friendâs book or checking out your local library.
tysm !!!,, irlly appreicyae it
OK, if i do a wild magic sorcerer
does that mean i can still have my 2 spells of my choice at lvl 1?
like, do i have to random every spell i have (except cantrips) or is it that i can still sometime choose my spell
You still choose your spells
i dont see a feature that randomizes your spells on the book...
Just need to be on the Sorcerer spell list
ok, thanks
the Wild Magic sorcerer subclass only does what it says.
Which version of the Sorcerer class are you using? The one that gets its subclass at 1st or 3rd level?
Check #find-a-game to use this server to join a group to play with!
Whatâs a beginner friendly class because I really donât know where to start
one that i find as a good beginner class is fighter, barbarian or maybe (don't take my advice) monk
my first character was a monk, and I had a lot of fun times with her!
but monk isn't the greatest for newcomers because of ki points, so I recommend fighter since there's 0 spells involved.
Ohh
but do whatever YOU like!
alright I think a rogue might be cool
I donât know if it would be any difficult to try play
yeah! that's not bad, I just made a Rouge character, haven't played with her yet. Rouge is pretty simple too!
okay thanks so much for your help
a lot of my friends first characters were rouges!
btw don't trust everything I say, I've only been playing for 3 months
I also have questions on character creations
sure, throw it at me!
I pick everything about the character like personality and looks ?
yeah, but you don't have to do that at the start, that can wait till later. But personality and looks can effect a campgain, also try writing of even just thinking about the backstory of your character. But remember, do your stats n stuff first before you get into the lore of ur character!
By the way for rogue what stat scales with rogue?
ohh alright
Depends on Subclass but main one is DEX.
yeah
Hey! So i kinda want to get into dnd; i'm kinda familiar with the basic rules, and i've spectated a few online sessions.
My main question is, how do i not suck at rp? Seems really fun, but improv's really hard for me from personal experience.
okay thanks
hi, im new around here, would love if someone brief me on some rules of thumb.
not to toot my own horn but I've been pretty good with improv for like ever, so I've never really thought about how hard it could be for someone... One way to think or put ur mind in the kindest for improv, is basically just think about how ur character would respond to whatever going on. This may or may not help idk, but this is how I improv. The thing is, improv isn't always needed for campaigns of sessions.
you fr new and thats so dope
rogue is solid but can be tricky for very first time
Seems like quite a bit of mental gymnastics for something you gotta do in like the span of 5 seconds...
It just kinda sounds fun being able to sneak around
everyone has good intentions until the dice roll...
Ok sorry if I'm disrupting but I've seen the funny DnD youtube shorts and I'm immediately interested. Tips on where and most importantly how to start?
Same position as you haha
what are you looking for
Literally from 0 like character making blah blah blah. I've tried google I've read the tutorials but my illiterate brain just couldn't understand a thing
I binged a youtube playlist to get a rough sense of the rules, idk if you learn like that tho
soz am playing overwatch so responses are slow
I read the basic rules on the offical DnD website-
Both #learn-to-play and this channelâs pins have a plethora of useful resources. Video supplements like Handbooker Helper can also be great resources for additional learning. Of course if you have any specific learning questions this is the channel to ask
If it helps anyone, i think "don't stop thinking"'s how to play dnd playlist seemed pretty clear to me, although i doubt it's in-depth enough
basics... learn to make a character. and what you can do per turn
rest is... practicable ...
Is an multiple hour-long commitment tho
Thank you! I guess I kinda get the gist of it but I wouldn't say that I'd be able to join a session and not be confused-
alot of dms are different
You could also watch people play dnd. Like i watched a few online friends play dnd. Makes it easier to understand
A lot of RP is based on improv, and improv takes time to develop both in creativity and robustness. My main tips for improving RP would be:
- Take some time to ask yourself questions about your character. What would they do if they needed a lot of money fast? Whatâs their favorite color and why? Etc.
- Reflect on how you performed, think of 1+ thing you could do better. If you need to, make slow-ish changes so itâs easier to adjust.
- Donât stress about being in character 100% of the time, nor 100% perfectly RP-ing your character. We might not be able to for many reasons (time, health, mood, etc). âCalabraxas tries to convince the guard to let us passâ is just as valid as trying to coversate it out.
As far as watching people play, I've seen a bunch of sessions played on YouTube if that helps..? I mean, as I said, I kinda understand the basics but stuff like how rolling for an action works or stuff like that I don't really understand. And as of rn I'm building a character on DnD beyond so yea!
Same
Interesting
Thanks
dnd beyond takes all the confusion out of it.
but you dont really learn. sure. it will get you by. but you wont ever understand your character or its capabilities.
dont get me wrong im not knocking it
That's good..? Though, I gotta ask if starting as a monk is a good idea
no
i mean, not if you know nothing and are just starting imo
ranger, fighter, are super basic
Iâm going to guess youâre either referencing a Skill Check d20 Test or Actions in Combat.
For the former, the DM will usually decide when you can make a Skill Check based on the thing youâre trying to do. For example, trying to walk a tightrope or bargain with a shopkeeper. The later will involve the other d20 Tests, saving throws & attack rolls. Youâll need to roll for saving throws to resist an effect (when a DM says you need to). For attack rolls, thatâs if you take the Attack action, or if a spell or other ability uses an attack roll.
In my experience all classes are good for beginners as long as youâre interested in learning the class. Monk is decently more complicated than, say, Fighters, but not overwhelmingly so.
i am in agreeance, more so commenting on someone without phb or any basic knowledge
How overwhelming is it to actually play a spellcaster? I have a feeling i understand the class, like i know how spellslots work roughly, but i have no clue if it's going to be a situation where it's gonna be hella intimidating in practise
dnd beyond will be your best friend
I wouldnât say itâs that overwhelming. DDB as Lizard Wizard says does a lot of spell slot tracking for you, though on a paper sheet itâs not too bad either.
You will have a lot of options which can be overwhelming. Thankfully, each spellcasting class has âstapleâ spells that are always good or even essential picks to take some of the analysis paralysis off your shoulders.
Good to hear
Wait ddb does spellslot tracking?
I should addendum, the âstapleâ spells wonât be listed out explicitly, itâs just what the community has decided as good picks. For example a level 1 Wizard will make good use out of Shield, Magic Missile, and Mage Armor.
Oh yea it does
Yeah DDB automatically updates your spellslots per level, and will check them off when you cast a spell (just make sure you hit the âcastâ button
For broad spell choice advice, Iâd advise taking at least 1 offensive option and 1 support/defensive option per spell level, including cantrips
Hi I want to start learning and eventually be able to play DND with a community. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to begin? Total newbie here and I'd appreciate any info! Thank you.

Did you check the post just above?
I will
So my first character is going to be a Dwarf Barbarian named Gerkok Marblerock, He's level 1 though, I'm not sure about filling out the personality traits, Ideals, Bonds, Flaws, and stuff like that.
He has a background as a Soldier, I know it's not much, but it's a start.
Im looking for a dm to play sometime today im hoping to find some
check out #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players
All it does is tell me to check out here
That's probably an automated server welcoming thing and not actually what the channel is telling you to do.
Ah
Does my character need a fully detailed background? I'm not that good at stuff like that?
Hi all! I'm wondering if there is a channel/people here/possible service for guided character creation?
I'm totally new to d&d and I've got a basic start on the D&D beyond app, but it's still a lot. I don't have funds at the moment to pick up a copy of the handbook, so I'm wondering if there are any hosted walkthroughs, something like an office hours type setting. Thanks!
Go ahead and start with the free rules for now. DnDBeyond has a step by step guide in their character creation tool that can guide you. That said I highly recommend referencing the rules as you build your character. If you want further assistance, check with folks in #character-discussion but most folks won't be able to do one on on teaching.
Keep it high level and more about 1) where did your character come from, 2) what did they do before adventuring, and 3) What got them into adventuring?
I'd also suggestw working with your DM and table to come up with backstories that best fit the kind of D&D game and setting you're in.
Okay, I don't have a DM or a Table yet, so thanks.
Hello everyone, how are you guys doing. I am pretty new to dnd and have played for about a few weeks and as of now i just joined the discord and was wondering how to find a group to play with because im not that familiar. Well i hope that everybody has a great night.

Hello, I just got my own account and am building a cleric. When I choose the class I want to choose my divice domain and I want to be a light domain cleric. Only when I go there now I only see "Divine Order" and I only have two choices (Protector, Thaumaturge). So... Is this the new rules? I bought the players handbook... do I need to do something to choose my divine order? I can be pretty blind sometimes so this maybe really just a matter that I dont' see it...
Subclasses are now chosen at level 3 with the 2024 rule updates.
But also not sure where/how you're building your sheet
@echo kelp Thank you, that makes sense. I am building it in d an d beyond. But I suppose I will get to choose it at level 3. That rule is probably better in any case to avoid just about everyone from dipping into cleiric for a multi class.
Domain =/= Divine order
Domain is your subclass
Divine Order is either Protector or Thaumaturge
Are you going to be a fighter cleric or a spell-caster cleric? Of course it's not a hard fast rule, but which way will you lean?
Probably more damage.
Then you'll probably want to be a Protector Cleric. You gain Martial Weapons and Heavy Armor proficiencies.
But to answer better, spell caster
That light domain is nice, but have not read the new rules as of yet.
Thaumaturge gives you an extra cantrip and bonuses to Arcana and Religion checks.
Hey
Hey hey hey
Whatâs up man

hey, is there anything I should know in advance or expect from the game postings "find a game" channel? Haven't ever played in an actual campaign, really want to play, but I'm kinda intimidated by that channel & the concept of playing with complete strangers on the internet :P
I too would like to know in advance about what to expect from the find a game channel,. I am a DM running my own game and discord server and I am looking for moar interpid adventurers to kill
XD
the find a game channel is just an explanation of how to use the commands for our Looking-for channels.
It tells you about the various types (DMs looking for players post in #looking-for-players , whereas players looking for DMs post in #looking-for-dm ). If you are creating a post as a player you want to make sure you read all the boxes and include things you don't want (IE: paying for games is an option, and if you opt out DMs who charge for games shouldn't contact you)
There are lots of games, but even more players looking to connect with them, so finding a game, more than anything, takes patience
yeee after briefly skimming looking for dm channel, it seems like most games have schedules that conflict with mine
that checks out
im trying to find a DM or a game in general but I cant post in the looking for DM thing
Check #find-a-game for instructions.
im here to try getting into DND again ever since my last mess up đ

is the bot down??
I tried but somethingâs wrong
"this interaction failed"

oop it worked
i did it.
i sent in a dm request.
I hope things go well.

Question: paladin oath of devotion
Sacred weapons states that i add charisma modifier for attack roles, is this in addition to the str modifier or does it replace the modifier?
And im assuming it also applies to damage?
Nothing in there says you replace or use it in place of, it says add.
And it only says it adds to attack rolls, and not also damage rolls, like many other bonuses that apply to attack and damage rolls.
Assumption does very little - things do what they say.
sooooo its just....a very cool shiny sword that has a much higher hit chance
that does either normal or radiant damage according to my choosing
That's Sacred Weapon, yep
oh ok....it seems....underwhelming
Considering it's a feature that you just naturally have available it's pretty decent imo. And it lasts for 10min which is WAY more than you'd likely ever need in any combat encounter so you don't have to worry as much about expending your uses as with some other class features.
Any addition that gives a boost in combat is nice, just +1 on attacks can make the difference between hit or miss, and if your build has a nice CHA you could improve your luck considerably when you need to come in clutch. On top of that, Radiant damage is an awesome option when facing creatures that are resistant or immune to common damage types (many undead, for example). These things combined could turn you from completely ineffective against an enemy to severely damaging.
That it will turn your weapon into a light is just a nice bonus if you or any of your party members don't have darkvision lol Saves from "wasting" a hand carrying a torch.
Do I read the overview of the campaign thatâs in the front of the campaign book to the players?
haha i just imagined that its an overglorified torch
I wouldn't just read it, I might summarize it. Generally you directly read the stuff in a box.
Hi super new. I'm curious how do I found a group or start playing amd learning
Hi , is there DnD Bulgaria Chanel?
We don't have channels dedicated to specific languages for moderation reasons. If you want to look for a bulgarian focused D&D server you might want to look up Discords Discovery tab or sites like disboard that show servers all over.
Sounds good
Hey, and i can see that you have this thing where people advertise their only table, is there anything i need to know about those
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels (and don't share personally identifying information such as exact age)
That's amazing, it have everything, so cool
Hello! I am newer than a newborn at this game, like, I donât even know how it works at all. But I saw it was âmedieval themed?â Maybe? And that It was funny and thought I would give it a shot. Can someone please explain to me the game? I donât even know if I ask it here, because Iâm still learning about Discord too.
Take a look through the information and resources in #learn-to-play
Also check out the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel
Unfortunately we can't teach folks the game one on one - not enough time and bandwidth to do that.
But I'd recommend looking at that channel and the free rules.
Go through the process of building a character (following the free rules).
Then watch some folks play D&D on YouTube/Twitch streams to get a feel for how others play the game (remember it's entertainment first over teaching you the game though)
Then start looking for a group to play D&D with - many groups are fine with new to D&D folks as long as that person has spent effort trying to learn the core game rules/mechanics (don't have to be perfect), and then just vibes well with the rest of the group. You'll learn a lot just by playing.
Oh wow! That is quite a lot, or at least looks like it. Iâll need some time to look through everything. But can you at least give me a hint on what I should expect when playing? I never played these strictly ârole playingâ games before. How long does each game last, for example?
Each D&D game table will be different but generally speaking...
D&D is a collaborative storytelling Tabletop RPG game
A group of players takes on the role of a party of adventurers, usually made up of a mixture of classes (character archtypes if you will).
The DM is like a stage manager who presents the story and sets the stage.
The DM asks the player how their character will interact with the current scene/problem.
The player tells the DM what their character wants to do.
If there's a chance of failure or if it makes sense, the DM may have the player roll dice and use an appropriate skill/attribute from their character to see how well (or poorly) the character accomplishes (or not) the thing they wanted to do.
Together the group explores a story - either pre-published or created by the DM themselves
So, do I need to get in character? Or is it also session based?
Players are expected to run their character (e.g. make choices, etc.) as the way the character likely would when running their character.
And I donât have any real 20 sides die, so the google one will do right?
Yes you can use a digital dice roller if you don't have physical dice. At least most groups don't have an issue with that.
Thanks man!
Iâll try and read through everything when I have time, and then Iâll try and find a group to join in
Thanks again for the explanations!
You're weclome! Take care and happy adventuring!
Helloo all
Hola amigo đ
Hello everyone, I really want to get into playing D&D but none of my irl friends are interested and can't find any local group to play with. I can't really join an online group now because of my schedule, so I have been wondering if I can play this game solo? if yes, then how?
The easy answer is Balders gate 3, but there really isnât a way to play it solo unless you just want to create dnd characters, worlds and stories on your free time. It would be more of working to understand the game and being your own dm
any games happening tonight
Iâm sure there are whether you can find one on such short notice is another thing
Check out #find-a-game
Dnd isnât like an MMO you donât tend to drop straight into a game it can take a while to find a table
Thanks for the informationđ. I will definitely give it a try because I don't have other options at the moment.
Is it ok if I go Human Fighter with Longsword. đż
Perfectly đ
Hard to go wrong with classics đ
There are lots of options out there for homebrewed solo D&D. Look up "DM Yourself" on DriveThruRPG or DMsGuild
Hi D&D peoplesss Iâm veryy new at this and was just hoping for some advice with how it works? Length of games and what-not? I built my character already but otherwise Iâm clueless beginner lol
I would check out #learn-to-play and this channels pins for a bunch of useful resources. But to put it simply: D&D is a collaborative storytelling game, consisting of an adjudicating DM that hosts the world the players play in. The basic gameplay loop is:
- The DM sets the stage
- The players describe their actions
- The DM describes the worldâs reactions
Ok Awesome thanks!
Ginny Di's video here gives a solid overview for newbs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI
As for the length of games, each session is typically 2-6 hours, though in my experience itâs closer to 3-4.
Campaigns typically span many sessions, usually 1 session per week at a regularly scheduled time. They can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years depending on the group.
If you just want to test the waters or want something with less commitment, one-shots are what youâd be looking for. Theyâre typically self-contained single session games. Though I have heard of them extending to 2+ sessions or even a full campaign
I try to make my sessions around 4 hours with a break in the middle.
Whereas my group goes for two hours on the nose. Which points up the differences across the community.
One thing new folks tend to focus on is how the game/rules work, forgetting that it's a social hobby. So an important part is finding a table you're compatible with, that wants the same sort of experience from playing, and is willing to communicate to make sure everyone is having a good time.
Thanks a lot!! I'll check it out.
Ok thatâs kinda the time frames I was thinking. Perfect thanks for the info everybody!
Iâm not exactly a newcomer, been playing for around a year and half now just figured this would be the channel to ask. I was wondering if anyone has a template for google sheets or docs or whatever that works for 5e character creation since before Iâve just kinda free written it.
I'd have to dig up the link, but I also like the current (2024 rules) form-fillable PDF.
You can find that one here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
What kind of spells can a bard use?
Each class has their own list of spells that they can use. As goofy as this sounds to say outloud, bards can use bard spells
Ok! What is a good website to find these lists?
D&D Beyond
Thanks!
I think some classes can use eachothers spells but not all classes can use all spells
Some spells are on the list for multiple classes. You can also multiclass or take feats to give you access to spells that might not normally be available to a given class.
What is the difference between a wizard warlock and sorcerer?
Wizards have a lot of spells, warlocks get their spells back on a short rest, sorcs can modify their spells
Mechanically, these are three different classes with their own rules, features, and spell lists.
Flavor wise, wizards learn their magic through study and knowledge, sorcerers are innately born with magic, and warlocks are granted magic by a powerful entity
(Very heavy simplification)
Thanks!
Thanks, i am pretty new to dnd!
Hey good morning to everyone I got a question
Ask away
Is it a problem to use chat GPT to make a character or use as a tool to make a character
Cuz I have a plenty
Plus I'm a rookie but I have been using AI to make solo campaigns because I was too nervous to play with other people
I would heavily recommend you avoid playing with AI. It wonât really be that useful in helping you learn or prepare to play with other people, nor will it mimic the experience in a satisfying way. At worst, it can give you wrong information and create incorrect expectations or habits
Yeah plus I have watched a few sessions on YouTube especially with the AI presidents so I got an idea.
Can I watch a few videos on the races I do find interesting mostly the underdark ones but not as much though.
But yeah how should I create a character though if I want to join a session
I would recommend you start by reading through chapters 1 and 2 of the Free rules. They explain how to play, and how to make a character. After than, you can create a character sheet, either by using automated tools like D&D Beyond, or manually create your own (physically or digitally)

I actually got to download it right now and just looked over it.
I was just debating if I want to use chat GPT to give me an idea of my character's backstory but not building them though.
I would recommend avoiding AI usage as much as possible. Part of the fun of playing a character is the fact that you designed them, after all!
Yeah but I'm not that good with character writing so I'll just use it but not too much.
Like I just made a Paladin of vengeance of helm deep gnome character.
Because I find the Deep Gnome race story interesting I wanted to make a paladin because it would be cool to have badass deep gnome protector.
His backstory is that drow attacked his home but found refuge I'll be coming a paladin for Helm because he respected his values and wanted to protect others and wanted revenge against drow
I usually have an idea for a character and then build around that. For example, a few months ago I was reading Cathleen NĂ Houlihan by WB Yeats and came up with an idea for a Paladin. I've played 5e since the playtest 11 years ago, but I'd never played a paladin until now. So I designed a champion of Cathleen NĂ Houlihan.
He's an Oath of Vengeance Paladin.
fellas lets play a lil dnd shall we
its first time anybody wiling to play
like 2 or more players
Sure
Only if you just starting now I don't come in mid campaign
Cool. Hmm someone on youtube liked some of the ideas of my dragonborn barbarianâs backstory and requests that i talk to a dm who might be interested in allowing Draxiros to have his primary weapons to be dragon touched by fizbans meaning they grow strong with him and no need to swap them out for a new one
bro what im new
its just me
đ
No I didn't know I was just asking lol
VC?
You voice chat right
yea
like, too new. dont know anything

ite cool
I know some things but not everything that I'm still a noob
I will be learning while playing, i think. I learned what I could, but its still very little
dwg i didnt play anything

of course interestingly, the dragon that touched his weapons is a Female Chromatic Blue Dragon named Sivilith that Draxirosâs father befriended after injuring a Red Dragon that tried to steal her treasure. Draxiros made it his mission to kill the Red Dragon cause it sent an Ash Giant to ambush and kill his father while he went out on a solo mission, but he will help others on their missions if it means prepping him up for the fight since no doubt he needs to be fully ready to slay the Male Red Dragon, Blelondru.
What's the difference between tieflings and demons?
Tieflings have fiendish ancestors (and demons are a type of fiend). So they're not the real thing.
So do they get looked down on cuz of that
i imagine
from what little i remember i know demons were chaos incarnate and devils were hell's keepers
that's all i remember
Can happen, yeah. Although metropolitain cities may also just accept them as one of the species walking around.
Depends on the setting really.
no i mean do demons call them impure or w/e
hahahaha... yeah the description of Tieflings was always that yeah... but then everyone who plays a Tieflings plays them like they're the most outgoing charasmatic creatures every.
There is also the devil / demon distinction. Tieflings can have ancestors of both, but they're quite different.
One of the biggest wars in lore is being fought between devils and demons, called the blood war.
Iâve never played before but I want to start does anyone know what all do I need to get to start?
Mostly the free rules and a willingness to learn!
Eventually you'll also need some people to play with you. DnD is a social game.
I remember being told demons and devils were too strong to be played by the average lv 1 dnd player as a character
that is true right? i remember reading some stats pages and they seemed really high
It's a pretty simplistic statement, but generally yes, sure, you can say that.
But it's usually not much good to compare monster statblocks to player characters.
For example, there are weak demons, weaker than a level 1 character, but most of them tend to be stronger.
See also: Abyssal Chicken
so i could play as one in a campaign?
As a tiefling? Sure.
See Mordenkanien's Tome of Foes (pg 23) for all the Tiefling subtypes.
Hey! so me and my gf are interested in joining a campaign, ive only been playing dnd for a few weeks, still in my first campaign, while my gf @tepid wyvern has never played before. both of us are interested in the more homebrew campaigns. neither of us are sure how to go about joining/asking for a campaign or anything like that. pls help lol

Hi what is the name of version 5 adventure set
I'm not sure what you mean by "adventure set"
Is it called The forgotten realms?
The Forgotten Realms is one world setting D&D is played in.
Another is Dragonlance. Another is Greyhawk.
I believe you're talking about one of two different products, either of which fills the same purpose: Either the Starter Set, which includes the adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or the Essentials Kit, which contains the adventure Dragons of Icespire Peak.
Dragon of Icesphire peak sound about right?
Both include a slimmed-down rulebook, one set of dice, a set of pregenerated characters, a poster map showing a the area around where things happen, and maybe a small GM screen. The Essentials Kit includes some handout cards, too; dont' know if the current Starter SEt has been updated to have them. By default due to the areas shown on the poster map and how they're described, both happen in the Forgotten Realms, but could easily be yoinked to any place you wanted with just a smidge of work.
The one that my husband bought us says that it's an essential set it does include dragon of Icesphire, is this the current one?
Was curious to know if the D100 dice is acceptable to play in the game
I use a d100 in my game...
There's not a LOT of call for a d100 but it can be used. Most people just use 2 d10s or a d10 and a "percentile" die which is just a d10 with the 10s places instead of 1s.
Yes, the Essentials Kit is current.
I will say the entire D&D 5e system is getting slightly updated rules. There will be a new Starter Set being released next... summer I think.
The D&DBeyond character sheets are they for the Dragon of Icesphire characters sheets?
As far as the updated rules are they included in the DM Guide and Player guide
The new 2024 PHB and DMG yes... the new Monster Manual has not been released yet, that'll be in February.
I'm not familiar enough with D&DBeyond to talk about it.
Okay the essential set will arrive sometime this month, I'm familiar with how the game set goes kinda back in 2000ish however I have been away from it 23 years and just now getting back in it, I've decided to try to program a new bot to also help me with learning a computer language while also trying to figure out how to setup and play again. Any suggestions or recommendations for how to start ?
The Essentials Kit is an excellent place to start.
You can also download the free rules from Wizards of the Coast
In order to find other players who also enjoy playing D&D can it be played online as well as in person, not sure how that works.
yeah
Check out #find-a-game for that.
Hello!! Iâve always always wanted to get into D&D. Im making a commitment now
I know the veryyy basics but donât know things of - where to start/find a group thatâs new comer friendly! Figure Iâd join the discord and here I am finally. Reason I ask kinda basic because it seems thereâs always different answers? So Iâd rather hear it here lol
Like is there a GOOOD place to start or is it the vibe of find a newcomer friendly group and start fresh there or?

is goblin a race?
guys i am bigginer and i need some help pls for my carachter
pleas
Goblin is a race, yes
I am pretty sure they are one, if not even the most, reprinted species in D&D Fifth edition
just started trying to get in to this type of stuff a week or so ago and need to make a character, would a dwarf archer be any good and if so what would i need?
ranger, mb
Any race works with basically any class, so that's not something you generally need to worry!
If you wanna go with an archer type character, I'd probably suggest either Fighter or Ranger with a bow đ
i keep saying archer instead of ranger, im guessing that might get confusing if they are 2 different things
Yeah archer by itself isn't a class. There is a fighter subclass called Arcane Archer that's the closest thing, and both classes I mentioned do get Archery fighting style to help with the bow đ
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighterâs mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizardâs spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
also i was looking on the d&d beyond and its saying things about some type of weapon mastery with 2 choices, what would be recomended weapons i should put there?
was thinking of longbow and shortbow but im afraid i might make a bad choice
How often are rules changed for gameplay?
Can you clarify what you're asking?
Usually the rules stay the same game to game/session to session
They are the same edition (5th edition). The 2024 updates are more like polishing things up.
There are some minor changes but fundamentally the core rules are the same.
Edition changes - when major core parts are updated in such a way that they do not work with previous editions - are fairly rare.
Are new characters added causing the new rules to deviate some?
The 2024 updates do make it so classes get their subclasses at level 3 now.
Also backgrounds provide an origin feat.
But the game designers have designed things so you can tweak a 2014 character to work with 2024 updates.
Even though 2025 might have edition 6 is it okay to stay with edition 5 until caught up?
I don't think we'll have a 6th edition for at least 10 years (5th edition was initially released in 2014). It's done so well that WoTC/D&D decided to conitnue the 5th edition with the 2024 updates.
That would be helpful
I don't like the feeling of being too far behind everyone else while playing on different edition from others.
I think you're safe. There's still folks playing D&D 2nd edition, 3.5 edition, and even the occasional 4th edition game.
6e coming out wont mean wotc comes in and breaks your door down and steals your phb
im looking on d&d beond and its saying i can take 2 spells, would i miss out on other spells perminatly if i dont choose them or do i get the ability to learn another spell later?
Every time you level up you can swap what spells you know (some classes can switch what spells they have prepared after every long rest).
is ranger one that can swap after a rest?
oh wait, is having a spell prepared different that knowing it?
So some classes "know" all their spells but only can have a set amount prepared (ready to use) every day.
Others only know and have prepared a set amount per level.
Check your classes spellcasting feature text to know how your class prepares spells and check the table to see how many spells you can have prepared at that level.
Anyhow I need to dip for now - got to go play in a D&D game.
ive thought for months about joining this server. honestly its really intimidating considering the size of the community and not knowing the game itself. hello!

If you zoom into the community it can definitely be daunting as lots of people are passionate about this. It can definitely suck you and never let you leave, but there is more good than bad. I would look into trying to join a beginner friendly one-shot (single session game, low commitment and perfect to try something out)
beginner friendly would be great
idk if this is the place to post this question, but if your character doesnt die and finishes a campaign, are you able to use them again in another campaign at their current level or how does the rules effect it?
i wouldnt want to create a really cool character i put a lot of thought into if i werent able to use them after a one-shot campaign tutorial
No, characters usually arenât transferable between campaigns
ok so i should use a premade one or a basic custom one for the tutorial?
There are exceptions, such as if your DM wants to continue the one-shot into a full campaign.
There is no standard tutorial, unless youâre referring to the demo
Premade or custom is up to you. Generally people like to make their own characters, however.
ok that makes sense
Great question, it all depends on the DM or Game Master (the person running your games). You can complete a game with that character and save it for a later use after discussing with your DM. Some campaigns or games can last for a few sessions to years jumping from story to story and your character can grow with you. Having a character archetype that you like doesnt necessarrily mean that you have to use the same one for forever either.
Death and character resurrection is a thing that should be discussed in a session 0
absolutely not. Maybe not in the same campaign unless you speak with your dm about possible reviving opportunities that will allow your character to come back to life. But, you can sure make a character that dies in one game and then play it again in an entirely different game.
ok thats cool
There are revival spells, but they're usually expensive
so itd be totally fine if i had a whole batch of carefully crafted characters just ready to use and ready to go, and i can pick from them again if i were to go to a different group
Usually if you want to transfer a character between games you'd reset their progress to whatever level the game starts at. And inform the DM to make sure they're ok with you bringing in such a character
ok that makes sense
Other game styles can accommodate the same character across multiple campaigns. For example:
- Sequel campaigns
- Westmarch groups (a specific decentralized style of game with many DMs that post sessions within the same game world and many more players that sign up for sessions when they can)
- Adventurer's League (D&D organized play where you "save" a character after beating a module then can rejoin another one with some limitations)
ok thats cooool!
this is a really cringy question and youve probably heard this a billion times.... would playing Baldurs Gate 3 help me understand the game? this is coming from someone who only understands that 20 is good and 1 is bad and the only roleplaying games hes ever played were the Fallout board game and Red Dragon Inn (which are absolutely different from D&D in term of gameplay)
like im watching the video series right now so im absorbing basic rules, but would playing that help me understand?
It would make it easier to learn but it wouldn't be a full replacement for the rules. BG3 is about 75% 5e in reality, there's quite a few things added, removed, and changed both for the balance of the game and to accommodate the video game format.
Imo the best way to get started is to read through the basic rules, especially since it takes you through character creation step by step. Using video supplements can be a great help, such as video tutorials or liveplays
Got a lot to work on with my character still, lots of things iâm new with
ooohhh ok
i know absolutely nothing about dnd where would i go to learn the solid foundation
im watching these videos!
theyre really helping me learn what to know
okay cool if you wanna collab or sum u can dm
what
my role isnt dm
heres a good question, are classes linked to races? like obviously a dragonborn has dragon abilities, but say an elf wants to do tinkering or something. is that a thing they can do?
No race is inherently tied to any class
oh thats so sweet
so if within reason a race can have a totally out of left field class?
thats sweet
Hello
fairy barbarian is a possibility
Part of the fun of a backstory is coming up with how your character got their powers. Want to be a noble orc, educated in some of the finest academic society to become a wizard? You can!
thats another thing, i kind of need to research the rules of the classic D&D universe
i thought wizards were born with the magic ability i didnt think it could be learnt
Sorcerers are the ones that are inherently born with magic ability, actually
ohhh theres differences
Each game table will do things differently so don't get stuck on official D&D lore unless you like diving into that (just don't expect it to be 100% faithfully followed in each D&D game)
this is really big brainnnnnn
Additionally, the most popular official D&D setting at the moment is the Forgotten Realms, but who knows if your eventual DM will have their game set in it. They may use another official setting or even their own custom (homebrew) one
ok

If I were to make a Jedi, what class(es) would best fit that?
My original thought was Druid because Nature = The Force, in a way
Psi Warrior Fighter
Whoops could've sworn it was "Knight" đ
Technically not even
They can simply be born with it, like a Draconic Bloodline, or during a terrible storm for Storm Sorcery
but it can also happen to them, like getting caught in a magic storm to become a Wild Magic sorcerer, or having an encounter with eldritch horrors beyond comprehension leading to Aberrant Sorcery.
Sorcerers: The magic is (now) an innate part of that person, a font of magic from their very being.
Wizards: Study in order to figure out how to go "wubbedebap" and make a rock fly (the Catapult spell)
What's up yall I'm new to dnd I played once with My uncle and his group when I was young but I wanna get into it and I cannot find a group near me at all I have a dm guide(I don't want to dm anytime soon it was a gift) and an essentials kit and I have a grasp of the rules having read it and played once I've also played bg3 a ton but I know there's alot of differences I've heard if people playing dnd online or through discord so I wouldn't mod having an online group

Please may someone create my first ever character with me?
What have you got so far?
Zilch đľâđŤ
I first played DnD about 7 years ago and it was on paper. I was in Year 7 at High School and the person who hosted it was a Year 11. He actually ended up graduating after a couple weeks and I never found anyone to play it since so Iâm broadening my horizons and trying to find players online since I want to get into it again
Here is a message I put in another chat. Just for context.
Picking a class, species, and background would be a good starting point, then.
Chapters three and four in the Free Rules have a few options for those:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Is there any chance I could DM you?
Just to go over everything without interruptions.
Iâm probably gonna be in and out here before bed. Sharing it here will probably get you quicker answers.
Or you could try your luck in #character-discussion.
Yo @desert saffron I can help you out if you want if your using the 2014 character creation (I don't know if 2024 has any new stuff, if so, I haven't looked into it yet. Also, can't guarantee quality/super in depth stuff but I'll at least help with the basics)
That would be great. Iâm mainly looking to create my first character so I can jump straight into my first ever campaign!
Alrighty, cool! Do you have anything figured out yet, or are you truly starting from the beginning?
Just dropped you a DM đ
so if im completely new do i try to find a game in person or one in here
or do i learn about the game first
I would advise trying to learn as much of the rules as you can before finding a game. It's nice to have a DM teach you but it is also a decent amount of work. You don't necessarily have to memorize everything, it's better to just be familiar with the rules.
alr thanks, Ill look up some videos and the like
Hey everyone I was just wondering. Are all the campaigns paid? Iâve had a lot of people ask me for a subscription based thing so I can play.
As for finding a game, the wider you cast your net the better your chance of finding a game. Within this server there's #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with. Also, I would check out #learn-to-play and this channels pins, both of which have a bunch of useful resources including the Free Rules
thanks man
I'd reckon the vast majority of games are free. Paid games are a popular option, but it seems that's the only ones you're finding đ
You can send the share link here or in #character-discussion
Yeah I guess thatâs what I get for looking in Reddit đ¤Łđ¤Ł I didnât know this server offered an lfg type thing.
I would recommend keeping up your search, using this server or other resources. Finding a game that matches your vibe is one of the final bosses of D&D, the other is scheduling
Yeah my problem is that none of the people I really know play it and the ones that are looking for players are strict on who to accept which is understandable so you can run a smooth campaign. Thank you!
I'm also looking for people so if you find some lmkđ
i would like to join if you are still open
Make sure to use #find-a-game to organize a group!
would i use find a game to find a dm?
Yup! The channel has a directory for you to help you find the relevant channel
In your case it'd be responding to posts in #looking-for-players or making a post in #looking-for-dm
Hi I've always wanted to try dnd and i decided to join the server
@plucky ether This post will be your go to đ
please remind me what the difference between class and character is thanks
Hi, I'm new to the fifth edition of D&D we are learning D&D also, welcome!
A character is a person. A class is that personâs job/role.
Character is your character, the thing you play as. Mechanically comprised of your class, subclass, species, background, feats, stats, and equipment + a narrative component of your personality, bonds, ideas, flaws, and backstory.
Class is broadly your vocation, or mechanical archetype. They all have a default flavor as described in the Free Rules / PHB. For example, a Cleric is generally a person who gets their powers by following a diety or set of dieties
top left where it shows Channels and Roles click on that section
Thanks!
in left column where the gear is there is a drop down column go there and maybe you can see a section that might help I know the icon has to be somewhere in that general section for each account, just not exactly sure where lol . also please check under clips to be sure that you have that turned off so you won't be recorded without your permission.
if you are talking about the avatar then it should be near the top section in the gear.
Thank you for explaining
Thanks you for explaining
Hey everyone been curious about doing this for a while basically have next to zero experience in this just seen a couple played out
Just would like to learn and potentially join one
how dose the walkign speed thing work? if its my turn and i can walk 30 feet can i walk 15 feet to a teamate, use cure wounds, and walk back? or dose all the moving have to happen at the same time
Movement can be interrupted by other things, yes. It doesnât have to be all or nothing
hewwo
I believe doing something like that goes against beyond's terms of service
What would that be?
That was in response to a now removed comment

I'm new to this game

What would you like to know. And Welcome!
I want to make a bard that focuses on charisma, illusions and disguises what race should i choose?
(I have looked around and a lot of answers were half elf but i am not a big fan of that class.)
Changeling
Can they only change small things about them self like height and weight or can they morph into a completely different person?
Different person, race, sex etc etc but canât change number of limbs
ok, thx!
Wow itâs just so hard to find a group they are always full aaaaa
yes, and in some country's its like on one plays
does advantage override disadvantage or the other way around
Is there much of a reason to use a component pouch over an arcane focus? I can see some roleplay stuff with it, but it's pretty easy to just use Arcane focus instead as I see it. 2014 5e btw.
There is no mechanical difference between the two, so entirely up to you which you like
How so? It says the Arcane focus ignore conponents that don't have a cost and a conponents pouch stores the conponents. Idk if I missed something, but sure they can work the same. But, why go for the conponents bag unless it for RP?
They both do the exact same thing
They both function mechanically the same, you need a bit of fleece to cast message either grab it from your pouch or use the focus
The component pouch basically always has required material components inside it (even when it makes no sense), as long as the material has no specified price, or isn't consumed by the spell
So you never need to buy the materials to put inside, they just always sre there to start with (:
So it comes down to choise between focus that replaces the materials, or pouch that always has the required materials, so the difference is purely flavor đ
Component pouches are also generally more multiclass-friendly.
Some spellcasters can't use an arcane focus in 2014, Arcane Trickster Rogues and Eldritch Knight Fighters. This was changed in 2024.
If youâd need an instrument for your bard spells and an arcane focus for your warlock spells, you can instead use a component pouch for both your bard and warlock spells.
Relatable
I know thereâs a community tab but does anyone have one they send new players too specifically maybe? Iâve been scrolling through and it seems like so much and some things I dont understand
What are some of the things there you donât understand?
I see a lot posting like west marches and then mixed with something and that confuses me tbh
As well as I see one I think sounds good and click it and itâs an extremely detailed involved server that gains experience through channels or something
Kinda just overwhelming đ
#looking-for-players might be more focused.
But, a West Marches game is a style of community that involves interrelated one-shot adventures. As I understand it (not having beeb part of a West Marches game previously), there's a bit of emphasis on wilderness exploration, but not much more so than in an Adventurers' League community. AL is the current (to become one of two during 2025) Organized Play program, which can grant characters a lot of flexibility in when/how they play, but has a touch more in the way of overhead to track.

Hello! Probably a very dumb question, but still felt the need to ask. I am thinking of playing as an armorer. And I have a question about the Arcane Armor. Does it keep the look and shape of the armor that got transformed? Or can I technically make it so it's sort of a mech suit? Maybe even with bigger size than my character. The last one is because I thought it would be funny, just a normal size mechanical suit (maybe steampunk-esque) and a small gnome/goblin/etc. inside. Or is all this one of the things I should first of all discuss with my Master?
Flavoring a change in appearance is a perfectly normal thing (especially for Artificers, whose class description even suggests flavoring as much as possible!) but note that a size change probably is a step too far.
So what you're saying is, I can do anything I want with the appearance of my armor, but not make it change my characteristics?
In a lesser way, it's also a bit of a question of if the flavor fits into the world you're playing in. For example, a steampunk armor might be weird in a medieval fantasy setting, but it would fit perfectly in a magitech inspired one.
hello everyone, ill be dming soon and i know the basics of everything pretty much. So, it would be nice for some tips about dming
Yeah, I understand that I also have to think about it fitting the world. When it comes to fitting appearances, I will ask Master if it fits
Hey, when something says âwhen you make a melee weapon attackâ am I able to use unarmed fists as a monk? Or is it specifically weapon attack
A melee weapon attack in 2014 is just code for "melee attack". Unarmed strikes are also melee weapon attacks.
^ mainly Iâm thinking, Barbadian and monk multiclass. Can I use rage with my unarmed strikes
It's a bit clunky wording.
Ah, got it. So, kind of. The problem with that multiclass is that barbarian needs to use strength to benefit from rage damage. And monk really wants dexterity instead.
I hope they give a better flavor text to lvl 1-2 the warlock 2024
Ah so I kindve switched something to make it simpler. Iâm using the suuuper unknown 3rd party class- pugilist, which is literally just a monk with a bit of wording changed, using âmoxieâ instead of âkiâ and STR instead of DEX
Just thought no one would know what a pugilist is lol
But the strength issue is the only prob?
Yeah then it should work fine.
I want to multiclass warlock with divine soul in 2024.
Sweet thanks
howtogm.guide is pretty frequently recommended as a good example, and has an adventure that it walks you through the process of prepping.

I want to create a character but i need a little help with balancing. I already have a class and race and backstory but i need help with the actual stats so it matches and balances well
Maybe this is the wrong channel to ask for something like that
#character-discussion is a great place to ask for help building your character. You can also ask for help in #optimization

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful information and resources for you. My recommendation would be to start by reading the Free Rules (under the Quick Links section). Chapter 1 explains how to play, and Chapter 2 explains how to make a character.
