The 2024 rules comes with a recommended spell list for each class at level 1
Rereading spells is also a good way to remember all the nuances you've been forgetting in practice, for good or ill 😅
I'll copy and paste the section from the Free Rules on Wizards:
You know three Wizard cantrips of your choice. Light, Mage Hand, and Ray of Frost are recommended.
[Your Spellbook] contains the level 1+ spells you know. It starts with six level 1 Wizard spells of your choice. Detect Magic, Feather Fall, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Sleep, and Thunderwave are recommended.
Everything in those free recommendations are classics.
man, this is overwhelming 😅
It can be a lot, but there's certainly no rush. Take your time with it!
played a bunch of BG3 and loved it, then started watching Legends of Avantris sessions. decided to check the rest out and there's so much to learn about dnd
gricko's my favorite so far lol
You don't have to memorize everything. Try to learn just enough that a game can run relatively smoothly, but don't be afraid to rely on the books or the other 4-5 people at the table with you if you need to remember how something works
There's nothing wrong with looking something up or asking questions while you're playing. The books don't get locked away when the game starts
what books should i look into? most of my fundamental knowledge (skill checks, levels, spell slots, etc) comes from BG3, and i see now the game just scratches the surface
The free rules should have everything you need to get started
The Free Rules on D&D Beyond are the best place to start:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
That will cover everything you need to actually run the game. Other books mostly provide additional character creation options. The Free Rules has the 12 base classes, but only 1 subclass for each, and only 4 playable species. You can get more by purchasing the full Players Handbook, or other supplimentary books like Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, or Monsters of the Multiverse
In #learn-to-play there is a list of recommendations for what books to get

Hi ! Its my first time playing D&D with some friends and we don't exactly know how to do it so I wonder if someone can help. We already made the characters but for exemple, I don't know how to make the map
If it doesn’t have a campaign map then there are many online map makers or you can get a large paper thing and pour rice on it, then use sharpie to outline the rice for a main continent and islands
hi
And how does it work, how do the player move on the map ? I saw that its like "9m speed"
But I don't know what it exactly means
Are you talking about BG3 or otherwise generic D&D (tabletop) maps
You could do it in a graphed paper or hexed paper with each square or hex being an appropriate amount of distance depending on the maps size
If I were you Id refer to things by feet. Most TTRPG games do movement in increments of 5 foot cubes. So if a character has 30 ft movement they can move 6 squares on the map.
yo im kinda new to dnd so i wanted to know if I needed to know anything important

My boyfriend and I are just getting started. We just got a starter kit. We would love to find others to play with or join others. Just trying to learn and start playing
Hi and welcome! Reading through the stuff in #learn-to-play is for sure the best way to get a basic grasp of the rules and what D&D is all about
As for finding a game, are you two looking for online or in-person play?
Im also new to dnd and really want people to play with im looking for people to play with online
For finding online games I would recommend looking in as many different places at once, as you can keep track of. This is because finding a game can take a while, but the more lines you cast can speed this up and give you more options.
Looking for various facebook pages, subreddits, this server's #find-a-game channel and Roll20s game listings are all good places to check out
I was just looking through there. I am honestly new to discord as well. I have never really used this app. Online or in person would work.
Ok, well I would give the same advice I gave just above. The more places you look for online games the better.
For in-person I would recommend checking in with your local game stores, libraries and for any clubs through facebook or meetup.com. Keeping a specific eye out for something called Adventurers League will be especially useful as those groups are often very open to newcomers.
Ok thank you. Yes I am looking on Facebook and I have some places locally. Thank you for the note about the league. I will keep an eye out
which is the best vtt
Entirely depends on what you’re looking for, each has their own pros and cons
For example, roll20’s biggest advantage is that it’s free, but I’ve personally found its UI to be cumbersome at times, especially if you ever need to play on a non-PC device (i.e. mobile)
I use foundry since I own all the physical books I refuse to rebuy digital stuff I already own
thx
is it possible to purchase any of these in a bundle?
Spelljamers
Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the universe
Dragonlance
Strixhaven
Eberron
Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica
The Tortle Package
Book of Ebon Tides
Not currently - DnDBeyond only has the 2024 Digital & Physical Core Rulebook Bundle and the 2024 Digital Core Rulebook Bundle.
Also in the future we do have #ddb-support for DnDBeyond community support.
alright, thank you. and will do next time
If you want to make a character sheet with things that are not freely available in websites like DND beyond, what is a good way to know you have filled everything correctly and you are referring to correct sources and have all information for the class, subclass, race etc.? I find it overwhelming whenever I attempt to do it
Some other sites like roll20 should have the basic rules integrated
If you’re referring to getting non-basic rules content (i.e. stuff in official books) w/o having to pay I’d recommend using your local library or a friend who owns the book with the content you want in combination with a digital pdf or physical character sheet
I tried the roll20 character mancer, it had options even less than what beyond gives
It’s so hard to find a dnd game

just did

Also check out other TTRPG communities and forums as well

i should use that
hi, so im quite new to DnD as in, ive never played it before, but been wanting to play for years, im looking in the find a community section of the discord, but to be honest idk whats a good pick for someone wishing to get into DnD for the first time ever, could use some guidance if possible.
Force of habit, apologies.
You're in the right spot if you have any questions on the game
ah
Or the online tools to use or anything else really
ya i want to get into DnD tho i might need a teacher im quite slow, and if i start going down the rabbit hole of looking up how to play, im going to be overwhelmed lol

will do 👍
If youre looking to play online I'd recommend checking out #find-a-game . Otherwise you could look at the postings in Roll20, or the various facebook pages/subreddits dedicated to that sort of thing
kinda basic question but should the subclass go in the features and traits of the character sheet and not the main class section?
thats how the character sheets exported from dnd beyond look
^ That's what I do.
Ultimately your character sheet is just a tool for you to use to keep track of your character. You can do that in whatever way makes the most sense for you.
it does seem too cluttered on writing the subclass. also i am making one for rogue, so most things seem to be common amond subclasses, at least for swashbuckler, expect for the opportunity attack bonus thing and few others

Hi should i buy the 2014 or the 2024 playershandbook ?
Sorta depends on who you plan on playing with and if it's online or in person most if not all online session probably run through DnD beyond which uses the 2024 rules now but in person it can be either again depends on who you play with
yo im a teenager who's just getting into DND but like idk where to start, how to start, what the rules are, and generally just don't know how everything works, i haven't even started doing anything because of school n allat 🤦♂️
but like can anyone help me better understand everything there is to know about DND without having to go through like 30 different sites
Play by post?
Is anyone online
Many people
Just signed up to DND beyond... Made my account, then clicked on character builder it tells me to do it again, so I tried logging in with my account, said it doesn't exist, so I tried remaking it. Said it exists so I can't... Why are things like this
Never mind, just rebuilt. Was easier than screwing around
question is there a genralized world lore page i can look at to understand the world DnD is based in?
And if U mean a website look at the forgotten realms wiki
👍
If you’re just looking to play/dive into the lore of the Forgotten Realms, which is the most popular/supported official setting for 5e specifically then the FR wiki is great. However, D&D is really just a ruleset of mechanics that are setting agnostic. If you wanted to know more about other official D&D settings going to #dnd-lore as JustJohn said or going to each setting’s specific wiki. Here’s a list of a few settings, but keep in mind it’s just those that I remember and isn’t entirely comprehensive:
- Dark Sun
- Dragonlance
- Eberron
- Greyhawk
- Planescape
- Ravenloft
- Spelljammer

Ellooo new here wanted to ask is it possible to make an elf with wings?
Elves do not have wings by default, so no. Using official options wings and/or limited flight can be granted by many features such as the Fly spell or taking enough levels into the Draconic Bloodline subclass of Sorcerer. While it’ll be much less common, your DM may let you have wings purely as an aesthetic option (i.e. you won’t be able to fly in them, nor do anything special mechanically), or allow you to reskin/reflavor a flying race to look more elf-like.
Ar naurrr I rlly like wings lol but Tyy can I at least make them like be cursed (as a backstory) to make them become like a chimera?
Completely up to your DM if they’ll allow that, though it would be a harder ask if you’re trying to implement mechanics for such a curse.
Ooo okay okay thank you!! I’ll do more research before creating one!
Ooof DND books expensive! £30ish for player handbook then next year there's the monster manual for like £30-40 blimey what have I done😅
Just wait until the dice addiction starts lol
Oh no
That'll only start if I can find a group
Yo am new
how does one newcomer find a DnD campaign?
Ive bought the book and character sheets with the hope of learning so that IF and when I find a group I'm not going in blind, but if I can't find a group knowing me I'll back out entirely
When you find the answer to that lemme know😂
If anyone responds💀
If you do find one tag me as well hahaha, I'm new and curious
how do i use this channel?
No clue tbh I haven't used it myself
how have you found a dm?
Talking to people irl
#find-a-game has instructions for making a post in #looking-for-dm . If you wanted to avoid that then you’re free to answer postings in #looking-for-players
You can do a fair amount with the free rules.
That, too.
I have no group😂

Game store near you; Meetup; other social media (my last regular in-person group literally came together because of NextDoor, which may not operate in the UK).
They’re also quite common in colleges as far as I’m aware
Thank you so much for the warm welcome.
True, but I didn't want to make assumptions about ages - college groups don't generally welcome townies.
Makes sense
I sort of live in the middle of nowhere and I doubt Ill find an in person group to play with. I have never played DnD but i played baldurs gate and got hooked. Are there many online sessions?
The trickier question with an online game is finding a group.
But you definitely can play d&d online
How would I be able to find a group to play with, im fairly new so
I like ask that too, but how do you make a thread in #looking-for-dm
The instructions are in #find-a-game . You have to use the bot
Though I'd recommend being proactive and reaching out to posts in #looking-for-players as well
Can someone help me and my friends to create data sheets?

Yes we are 5 friends that just whana try DND and I am not sure what stat to put in some places, I read DM guide, handbook and rulebook
The free rules and character link above should both go through the steps for creating a character
And if you have questions on specific features, feel free to ask
We don't have the bandwidth for personalized help for everyone given the number of new players, but people will answer when they can
If it's not too late, consider one of the Starter Set/Essentials Kit - they're both specifically designed for people who "want to try" the game, at a price point substantially lower than a hardcover core rulebook.
@main fulcrum thank you
I've experienced my first wipe and I don't know how to react i was really attached to this character and what makes it worse is than a party member did it. I joined thinking yall might have some advice on how to process this betrayal.
"a party member did it" - deliberate backstab or friendly fire incident?
deliberate backstab
Did your group have any kind of session 0 wherein expectations for the game got discussed?
No, none that i can remember , but i has been like 10 sessions
Heya
we're both new the D&D and we are close friends, but how it happened just makes me mad.
Is it alright if I could get some of the main rules about dnd and not what to do when you're in a game

Gulp
Don't panic :D. These are the free basic rules and are a great place to start. Feel free to ask questions as you read through them.
It might be worth asking for a mid-game session 0 to discuss expectations and what is and is not acceptable in your game.
I don't wanna fumble man
My friends just keeps yabbering about me trying to start so I wanted to give it a shot
Rather than wasting 24/7 of my life playing roblox
@crude rune and, to add, if the other player and the GM insist that it's acceptable behavior and you're not on board, then it's time to decide if you want to keep playing with them.
Trust me, you won't fumble. Everyone starts not knowing everything and that's totally okay. You don't need to memorize all the rules to play.
Concur.
Ouh, alright is it fine if I could ask a few questions?
That's why this channel is here.
Totally
Gotcha gotcha mb
Alright so first question is it possible you could create a custom race and appearance with its class or nah
Yes you totally can, but I do suggest looking at the base ones first
It depends on your DM. Some DMs might be on board, others may not want custom races.
Dangit
Always good to ask 😄
That said, Lollang, flavor is free, and it's entirely possible to reskin an existing mechanical race with a different appearance if the mechanics help support what you want.
What if it was a characther that you didn't create but rather from somewhere else that was created like a show, game and etc would it be allowed?
Depends on your DM! Some may accept it, but I wouldn't necessarily count on it.
Gotcha
Could there be anything else I should look out for when I try to start my first game?
(As a point of reference: I literally couldn't allow it, because what play I get to do, on either side of the screen, is through the Adventurer's League organized play program.)
H u h ?
It is acceptable and im on board. The problem is that he has this sword of great importance to the lore, with a strong entity inside. Initially, when I stopped him, he should have died—yet he was saved by the entity. Then, he asked his god for the power to kill me. I convinced the god to let us have a one-on-one, with the loser being wiped. He hit zero hit points, and the entity saved him again. Even after all that, I decided to have mercy on him. When we took a long rest, he sent me to the Void Realm, where I met my demise.
Apologies, for I have not been keeping up with the conversation, but just from this post: I would recommend no longer playing with this player.
Yeah. The D&D rule set isn't really intended to support a PVP kind of experience.
Advanture's League is when a lot of people play in the same universe together. Bringing in a character from an existing IP wouldn't really work in that format.
Agreed. The DM should have put an end to it at multiple points.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Dangit, guess I gotta let my mind create yaba yaba do do stuff
When you say "the entity in the sword saved him" does that mean the DM did something, or is this a power that player made up?
Sounds like MCS with a nice helping of DM assistance
Flip side: You can absolutely create a character who's clearly inspired by something from another medium. I've got a whole set of characters I'd done for gits & shiggles who are, among others, Goose Banner, Captain Americanary, Tony Stork, and Hawkeye (because why mess with perfection)
This is gauging my organs it's to confusing I don't really know how to start a game as a player..

The entity is based on a previous character that one of the DM’s players created, who has ascended to some higher form of strength. The player who created it asked the DM to allow the entity to intervene, and the DM agreed.
he did base his character off a specific anime called "bleach"
Hey. How do you think, should monk be able to make 5 punches per turn on 4'th lvl?
So the DM and more than 1 player in this group were acting against you in this PVP battle. It sounds like this whole group has some very big misunderstanding about what kind of game D&D is meant to be.
He made Ichigo?
At level 4, a monk has not yet unlocked Extra Attack, so you can make 1 attack with your actions, and 2 attacks with your bonus action if you use flurry of blows, which means the maximum is 3
he made Kenpachi
and by based he just completely made his character after him
That's why I ask if he should be able to
That would be more a question for #dnd-discussion
Let me guess, he started cutting thru everything?
more or less, but the dm did set boundaries for what he can cut
Like what for instance
This channel is for teaching people the basics of the game and how to play. If you'd like to discuss rebalancing or our opinions on certain rules or design choices, it would be best if you posted that in another channel
he just can't instantly cut through walls and npcs
Ah. Okay
I think this may be a discussion venturing out of Newcomers territory and into #tales-from-the-table maybe
"— Common sense? I don't remember having such a useless thing"
I'll run this by my DM, and if he doesn't agree, I'm going to find a new party
since the one im currently in is against me.
There's an age old saying in this hobby: "Playing no D&D is better than playing bad D&D."
I'm curious about the other different types of dnd's out there like I wanna know everything
If this game is frustrating and unfun for you, then it may be a good idea to just leave, regardless of if you can find another one or not
Dads...?,
no, it's not like that this is the first time something like that happened i usually have fun in the campaign and i really enjoy it
#dnd-media would be the best place to ask
Mb waasnt on channel list
Ye thats what i mean
Sorry I meant dnd.. it's auto correct
Wasnt on my base list
I'm curious about the other different types of dnd's out there like I wanna know everything
Thanks
The current version is 5th Edition (5E). It came out in 2014 and currently there is a refresh so you'll see people refernece 5E 2014 or 5E 2024. There have been previous editions with their own books and and rules going back to the original in the 1970s.
The DnD Wikipedia page has a bunch of information about previous editions.
Oh god there's to much to get it and shove it in my head
If you're planning to play now, you can just focus on learning the 5E rules. Each edition had their own rule set but you don't need to know those.
Does the 5E consist of custom races and the rest :3?
5e has a set of races to choose from, there's not really a race builder option. || Custom Lineage doesn't count for this statement, you veterans. ||
Dangit..guess I gotta start creating
Still recommend starting with the existing options 😉
No matter which edition you're using
Yep, so I'm new. I- I just have a character, anddd i've played with my friends irl, but we werent really following the rules of DnD. Im just new and I suppose I will find a group, I just want to ask a question: What does d20, 4d10, etc. and all of that d-something.
Please don't make the biggest mistake new players do and try creating something new before considering the options presented in the books.
1d20 is shorthand for one (1) twenty sided (20) dice (d)
thanks, what about the others?
So 4d10 would be four ten-sided dice
ahhh
It's all the same abbreviation pattern
that makes sence.
D just stands for die or dice interchangeably
yeah, but. im new. like who will want me in their campang, im practically useless

yeah thank you.
As long as you put the work in and are trying, most people are fine with new players
i really didnt expect this to be so friendly.
Plus new players don't have jaded expectations yet, that can make them more fun
i swear if you could see my youtube history, i have watched a tons of videos on D&D, but I dont have experience.
Btw, is it more accepteble to say "DnD" or "D&D"?
Honestly don't think it really matters
Officially it's D&D but folks know what you mean if you use DnD
D&D is technically more correct
so many opinions lol
But dnd is easier to type
fr
It don't matter. Everyone uses them pretty interchangeably. I even use both in the same sentence most of the time
Okay, well thanks guys. I aprecciete each one of you. I'll go look for a team. I hope one day I will play with you so that I can show you that you helped me
i understand nothing lol, it's so cool but i just can't process everything
not me spending like 2 hours making a character
wait guys. am I supposed to be able to send messages at #find-a-game ????
Read the text on the channel
#find-a-game is just a list of instructions and advice. Its not a channel to actually post anything. The chat bar isn't locked, but it will automatically delete anything you post. The reason its not locked is because that channel explains how to use the server bot, so they leave it open so that you can input the commands there
turns out this is WAY more complicated than i thought (๑•﹏•)
It can take a bit to understand everything, but thankfully there are plenty of resources available to you. Take your time! There's no rush.
but. I have to name my community? I dont have on I just want to join one
find a commuinty
alr.
eeeeh nah nah i want to play d&d, sure it's complicated but at least it's fun (≧▽≦)
So, in case you weren't aware, a "community game" is different from a normal game of D&D. If that's what you are looking for, then that's great, and there are options for that, but if you just want to play normally, then its the wrong one to do. A "community game" is one where you play D&D with a community of people rather than 1 specific group every time. There might be a large group of players and several DMs, and you play with each other based on availability. So in a community game, each individual session will still have 1 DM and 4-6 players, but who that DM is and those other players are will change from week to week
ah thanks for letting me know
would be great if I could find someone to guide me but for now I'll just read some guidelines i found
here it says "paid games","community games",and"other cervices"
withc one is just for a normal one
Those are all different things.
oh. so-- witch command should i do?
the /looking-for-dm command is what you use if you are a player and want to find a dm
I just want to find people with a at least some experience that want me in their "team" so that i can learn by them.
Ok so I just checked the form. You're on step 6, "Opt-In" correct?
So, all of the options there are abnormal game types. Because most people aren't interested in them, all 3 default to being "off." If any of them do interest you, then you can opt-in to one or more of them. This just means that if a DM is running a game where you have to pay to play, or if a DM is running a community game, or something like that, then they won't reach out to you unless you "opt-in" so they know you are interested in that style
For now, you can probably just leave that section as opt-out
Yep looks like it went through. You can see the post in #looking-for-dm now
But its always good to be proactive as well. If any DMs see your post and are interested in recruiting you, they will either reply there or DM you, but you can also go to the #looking-for-players channel and read through the posts there. Then you yourself can reach out to DMs that need new players if they fit the style and time slot you are looking for
The wider the net you cast, the more likely you are to find something
what would yall say is the best class and subclass for beginners in dnd
There's no "best" class, really. If you're looking for a more simplistic class, I'd recommend Fighter or Barbarian.
You can also look at the complexity for each class in browsing. For example (hoping I get the command right)
?tag new fighter
Fighter
Master all weapons and armor
Fighters rule many battlefields. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 14
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 10
Cha. 12
Likes: Weapons
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
The Class Overview Table shows all those complexity rankings at once.
Any chance we could get a tag command for Complexity? That's something that gets asked about a lot
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
That’s awesome. Thank you
2014 for sure, they did make 2024 a little harder with the brutal critical stuff perhaps
It's all pretty subjective tbh, and also depends on the subclass
And managing rages.
These complexities are based on a table in the Players Handbook. Each class has a complexity listing in the book. I would personally agree with you, but that’s something to take up with WotC
Also the fact that Wizard is listed as average is quite surprising
Most likely, the complexity ratings are based on specifically character creation, and the amount of choices that you need to make. Wizards, for example, have fairly complex mechanics, but when you’re actually making your character you only have to choose a subclass and spells. There’s no secondary systems like Invocations or Metamagic
I really wanted to start off as druid but now I'm thinking cleric or ranger might be more my speed
Druids probably listed as high complexity because of Wild Shape.
if I have a tiefling with an acoylte background with a +2 to charisma would that give me a +4 to charisma or would one cancel out the other?
neat, thank you
Hold up. Where are you getting +4 from?
acolyte background with a +2 and a +1 to my spellcasting modifier
I might be messing something up a bit
I might be on an offbrand character making website
So your background adds to your Charisma score, a number from 1-20.
is that a mistake on the d&d beyond website?
Your spellcasting modifier (assuming you’re a bard, sorcerer, or warlock) equals your Charisma modifier, a number from -5 to +5.
Your modifier depends entirely on your score.
You don’t add the modifier to your score.
They do in the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
oh so I just add a plus 2 to my spellcasting modifier instead of my base stat
I don’t have a bonus in dexterity from my background, the only options are intelligence wisdom and charisma
Sorry. I mistyped.
What was your Charisma score before you added the bonus from your background?
they ask your background before so it was at a base 8 but now its 10, so I’m wondering if the acolyte bonus removes the bonus from tiefling or if it only cuts it off if they coincide
Gotcha
So yeah, it sounds like it’s correctly adding the +2 from your background to your Charisma score.
An ability score of 10 means its ability score modifier is +0.
If Charisma is also your spellcasting ability, then your spellcasting ability modifier is also +0.
That means when you make a Charisma check, a Charisma saving throw, or cast a spell, you add +0 to the roll.
Typically a spellcasting wants their highest score in their spellcasting ability.
yeah but the main thing I’m wondering is if my background bonuses cut off my race bonuses
You shouldn’t get a bonus from both your race and your background.
ok so it does cut it off, that probably won’t be too big an issue considering I probably won’t use dexterity too much as a paladin, but a cutoff from a free two charisma is a tad annoying
thank you you’ve been very helpful
Just for context: those bonuses used to come only from your race/species.
Now with the 2024 Player’s Handbook, they’ve moved to background instead.
But the 2024 PHB also says that if you’re using an older species that has such a bonus, to ignore it and use only the one from your background.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#BackgroundsandSpeciesfromOlderBooks
Mathematically, it’s still the same overall bonus as before; it just comes from a different place.

Hey, I have wanted to join a dnd group since a long time, but I know nothing,l so far •<•
Thank you very much c:
Is there anyone that is having a game right now or very very soon? That would allow me to sit in and listen and see how it’s all done and watch the group play?
Most groups are not open to having random strangers watch them play. You may want to look at D&D games streamed on YouTube or Twitch if you're looking to see how folks may play D&D.
ohh i see all kinds in twitch...ty!
Hi I'm trying to look for a group around my age range in their 20s I know how to play dungeons & dragons I just never finished a campaign before I've been wanted to for a very long time and I don't know how to start on discord
Thx
can i become a monk and wizard hybrid ? i kinda wanna know how subclasses work
Yes, but they don't really go well together, since you would be balancing three different stats and that's not including Con
thanks
is there anything that I should know when planning the map of an area?
is there a spot in this discord i could possibly find a group to play with cinsistantly? like 2 times a week or something? ive been wanting to join a discord group for the longest time.
I don't think so but 2 time a week is a lot, you need to remember that the time between sessions is very helpful for the DM to prepare what happens next.
i mean once a week would be perfectly fine for me i just wasnt really sure on much. the last time i played D&D it was in person with a group twice a week and the campeign lasted about 8 months.
but this was also 11 years ago
then you were extremely lucky 11 years ago
between the campaigns was about 3 months tho lol our DM basically wrote a book and some how he was able to counter our shinanigans and was able to basically think about all the BS we would try to come up with lol
he passed away about 5 years ago and we all kinda just went our sep ways.
you could try to bring them back together...
but anyway lol if there are any groups looking for players let me know id love to join a group
we I think this is how you do it: #find-a-game
same
bringing the group back wouldnt work as well since i moved 1100 miles away and i havent really contacted them in soooo long
well all I can do is wish you luck
As Gakson said the tool to find a group using this server is #find-a-game , which will contain both a directory to useful groupfinding channels as well as instructions for making posts within them. You’re also free to respond to others’ posts. Also as before, playing more than once a week with the same group is fairly uncommon. If you had the time and wanted more D&D you always have the option of joining 2 different groups and/or playing one-shots in between your regular sessions.
i make content for youtube and tiktok.... i play games other then dnd like Vrchat....um yea
and my first time playing the rpg how do I force to play

It's really difficult to find a game that just uses roll20, discord and/or DnD Beyond...
can you divine smite with a punch?
In 2024 I do believe you can
what about 2014?
thx
Where do I find a dm for the first time playing dnd
I’m watching some of the videos on getting stated. So your character levels up? How does that work?
2014, depending on your DM, you'll either gain XP for defeating enemies and other things like avoiding traps, and you level up when you have enough XP for the next level
Or if your DM is using milestones, they will let you know when you level up
When you level up, gain increased hit points, and gain new features as shown on your class / subclass (and sometimes race)
What type of software do most people use to play DnD here?
foundryvtt
I think roll 20 is probably more common overall
yea, I would agree... there is more knowledge and effort required to host on foundry (although it is a far superior platform IMO)
how can i see what games are offered today for PBP in the forums or discord? and even maybe a VC one for newer players..would love to try it today
and when playing PBP, do you still use like your character sheet that i made on the website?
hey guys, i just watched some videos on youtube about what's D&D ,, where can i find games a can join

It’s so overwhelming after making your character and looking to try out a noob friendly game. So many discords. So many diff types of games etc.
My best advice is to just take it slow. Don't rush and ask as many questions as you need to.
yeah def.f...would jsut love to find a small chill new player game for maybe like an hour or 2 to get the jist of it all
Totally understand. Atm, even general games can be hard to find since there are so many more players than DMs. Bes option is to apply to the ones that look interesting and to look in a variety of places like here, the Roll20 forums or the D&D Beyond forums.
will do...some have over 200 players ..in a game? how does that work..must be the text games?
That's probably a Westmarches server which is a large open world game with multiple DMs and players. Some sessions might be text based and others might be voice.
There generally won't be that many players in a single game
How can that be like organized. That many people with some dropping out. More coming in etc. how is a game like that ran?
Westmarches aren't generally ran with consistent party of same people, rather whoever's available to play at the time
Think of it as a giant pool of players who play individual games in the same setting
Each game would still just be the DM and a few players
As for organizing, bigger servers often have some kind of sign up bot

Like did you saw a sesión or something like that?
The main things I'd recommend is to spread your search wide and if playing online, look at availability not time zones
Just because it's 6 am for one person and 7 pm for you doesn't mean you can't play together if the schedules match
I'm looking for the current rules for adventurer's league.

I have a question or two for a dm but I’m nervous to voice in server
Does the DM not take text-based messages?
Or are you asking about general D&D questions here on this server?
I’m just nervous cause I don’t have a really good schedule for trying to get into dnd I think I only have Sundays and the rest I work and I never know when I’ll be home but I love dnd stories and want to get involved my self
You can look for play by post campaigns/games
Yeah play by post is playing D&D through a text-based format
Oh I’m new to everything I have and beyond and a few books
Did you read the info in #find-a-game ?
I run new player ONLY campaigns at several points during the year because I enjoy teaching new people.
I played a campaign with my exes family but it was homebrew and I’m not to sure how by the rules it went but I know the basics I think but I’ll definitely ask in PBP
@echo kelp where is play by post?
You need to look for games with that key word. There isn’t a specific LFG channel for those games.
Oh ok my bad sorry
No worries! I should note that you may also check out other D&D servers in #looking-for-community as they may have play by post games hosted there.
I did dm mr clean on his that he posted at four something though I’m not sure what vtt is
VTT stands for “Virtual TableTop,” which refers to a program, website, or other online functionality that replicates a game table to facilitate online play. They’ll typically have a way to host maps and tokens, a dice roller, and character sheet integration. Popular ones include roll20, Foundry VTT, and Owlbear Rodeo
I just installed roll20 should I get the others too?
Typically you’d just get the one your group will be using
My pc is out of commission for the moment due to no space to get it working so I’m stuck on my phone rn
If your group uses roll20 then you’re fine
Ok thanks I feel like a fish out of water ngl lmao
Did my first session 0 yesterday! Any pro Strats for me?
Remember that D&D works best when you lean into it's collaborative aspects. Make sure to leave room for other players and the DM to have fun too (no Main Character Syndrome please! Also remember D&D is a game and folks playing it should be having fun. If things are not fun, time to pause the game and figure out what's not working.
I think Noob excellently summarized the keys to being a good tablemate. For elaboration, I have a few bullet points here (including the other linked comment): #dnd-newcomers message
These are some good pro Strats
Hello hello!
I've wanted to play dnd for quite some time, I've had a character in mind for years now, with a (in my opinion) interesting backstory and goal, however I can never find anyone to play with, if possible I'd like the basics of this character to be checked out, and maybe even directed to a place where i can bring her to life

HEY GANG i am new to dnd and i dont know what the hell is dnd but i wanna try, the only thing i know is that its a board game that you can do anything. can somebody tell me what and how to play dnd?
its better to learn through play than to be told what it is, but basically its an ever-changing story with you and your buddies as the main characters, and your dungeon master or DM as the person telling the story and the events. the DM cannot influence any part of the story except the enemies, the npcs, the worldbuilding, and threatening you with bad decisions and fake dice rolls. if you want to try it, you can buy the players handbook online, or ask if you could play a game on here. i havent explored this server a ton yet, but it seems like theres a lot of nice people you could ask. sorry about the wall of text btw
this is a very bad explanation as well, probably not the best person to answer
If you're using the 2014 Cleric you'll select it on the class page of the character builder. If you're using 2024 Cleric you won't select your domain (subclass) until level 3.
Welcome! You've got a rough idea of what the game is, but I'll clear up some misconceptions. D&D isn't necessarily a board game where you can do anything. It is a collaborative storytelling RPG, where both players and DM contribute to running an adventure.
The DM sets up the world/adventure and runs scenarios for the players to interact with. In turn, the DM adjudicates how the world reacts to the players' actions. In this, you can't "do anything"- you're still limited by the abilities and features you have. For example, you can't fly without a feature that grants you a fly speed. There's also usually an unspoken agreement to play cooperatively and play for the adventure- so while you can make an edgelord lone wolf who sneaks away from the party constantly, it's frowned upon.
To start, I'd check out #learn-to-play and this channel's pins which have a bunch of useful links, including to the 2024 Free Rules. While it is nice to have a DM teach you the rules, the more you can do on your part to read through them before joining a game the better. Likewise, knowing as much as you can before joining a game massively improves your chances of getting into any particular group. Don't worry about memorizing everything; instead, familiarize yourself with the rules, especially those concerning character creation, skill checks, and combat. Finally, I recommend making a character as you read through the rules for practice.
this guy is much better at explaining, listen to them not me
Hey I'm new to dnd and i dont really know where tos tart but I've always wanted to play.

hi yall...
Hi yall
Does anyone know how I can find a DND group, I really want to get into it but none of my friends are interested
When it says 50/50 Rp and combat does the RP always mean like tub have to do a voice or stuff like that or does it just mean that you need to be that person whom you are playing ?
Roleplaying is not solely voices. You can roleplay by saying “hey my character would like to do <things that your character would actually do in that situation>”
That’s also roleplaying.
Hello, would anyone be a champ and show me the D&D world? I would love to learn how to play TTRPGs. Im looking for someone to show me the ropes, help with character creation, do a mini adventure. I played PC versions of games based on D&D but im scared to just randomly join a group 🙂

We just don’t have the resources to do one-on-one lessons with everyone. However, the bot post above has some excellent resources to help you get started, including a link to the Free Rules. And if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We’ll be happy to answer everything we can
i’m in the same boat! i have started to get some basics to help me get started (dice, dice roller, and a matt) but i’m unsure where to start. my husband plays but he’s been super busy and hasn’t been able to help. also would kinda suck with just the two of us lol
I did buy the basic rule book and some dice so familliar withe rules. Its the fiorst session taht scares me. Does not have to be 1:1 🙂 I can join any group patient enough to sort of guide me through first session 🙂
In that case, the #looking-for-dm channel is where you can browse through posts by DMs who are looking for people to join there group. You can look for ones that specifically say “beginners welcome” or something similar, but most groups are actually fine with a beginner player joining them even if they don’t advertise it, so feel free to reach out to any DMs who’s game interests you, and ask about it. My main recommendation would just be to avoid games that start at higher levels. Level 1 is absolutely the best place to start for you, but I would consider a level 3 start to be the maximum a new player can handle without being overwhelmed.
To elaborate on what UndyingNoob said in reponse to this question, it's the distinction between treating it as a first-person narrative and a third-person narrative, if you remember that from old languge arts classes. Also sometimes referred to as "Method Actor" vs. "Narrator."
oh good..i am not up to the "voice acting" yet...so this is good to know
ty fo rthat
They're both fine, and neither is inherently better than another. I understand that streamed games will tend ot lean into the first-person side of things because the players are often (semi-)professional actors, but I don't have any that I watch.
Hey, I'm pretty new to dnd, would using an Ipad for DDB and my phone(With good ear buds) for discord work?
It can. The tools that you use to play D&D basically come down to personal preference and your group's needs. Each group plays D&D differently, so what works for some people may not work for others
Yup. As an example, I've found I'm a much better DM in-person than I am over any kind of VTT.
Hey I'm new here and kind of new to dnd.. I was wondering if anyone has time to throw me into a homebrew. I missed it and haven't played in over 4 years and would love to get back into it. Sooooooo anyone have the time?

Thanks you two
in like 4d6kh3 what's the inverse of kh
Depends on the program
Instead of roll four dice, keep the best, you'd have roll four dice and drop the highest?
Ok let’s clarify. “kh” means “keep highest.” It’s a way for dice rolling programs to roll multiple dice and ignore certain results. The inverse would be something where you “keep lowest” instead. But what the terminology for that is depends on which dice rolling program you are using. Do you have a specific one in mind, or is that what you’re asking about?
My party doesn't use a vtt so i was wondering
In Avrae, for example, it would be kl for "keep lowest".
So 4d6kl1 would return the die not used by 4d6kh3.
That's what i assumed, but i know foundry is the popular one or something where it may be drop highest or something
Idk any of the programmes or how they work
Is an example an i've not used any of them
Where did you get 4d6kh3 from to begin with?
Insert me reading someone from this server
Someone was probably talking about rolling for ability scores
Yeah, it really depends on what system they're using.
There's no universal standard here.
Like disadvantage is 2d20 but keep the lower of the 2
2d20kl1, in Avrae, at least
No guarantees its the same for any other system.
Or even that anyone will know what you're talking about outside of Avrae.
Well as our games are played on ms paint i think it's fine
And we're all first timers
if you’re just using it as a shorthand in general conversation, it would probably be “kl” but “keep lowest” pretty much only ever comes up in the context of disadvantage, so most people just use the word instead of typing out 2d20kl1
As long as you can all see the individual dice rolled, you're good.
I wanted to add a ring of sorts that lets you roll an entire extra 1-2 dice on attack damage but you can only keep the total-the extras and you need to keep the lowest of them
But add something like a consistent +2 damage or something akin
It's an unfinished concept but i just wanted to know for myself and if i evec do add something like that, a shorthand for them to write it
That's definitely in the realm of #homebrew . But not also that most people would look at something like what you're describing as a not-benefit, since the perceived advantage of rolling extra dice is to account for individual disadvantageous rolls.
Ik, but i came here for the question mainly
It is definitely homebrew, we're all new, we're here to have fun and i've altered some rules because the players wouldn't enjoy them as stated etc. But that's relevant here
I appreciate the help
Sooo... can I have magic initiate with 2 spell lists at level one with a sage background and human's origin feat? Using 2024 rules
If I correctly understand what you're asking, yes.
And if I play cleric and choose magic initiate druid for my human feat, I effectively have 3 spell lists to access
Because the feat has the Repeatable tag, you can pick over and over again each time you select a feat
Yes. You get one origin feat from your background and another from being a human, so you’ll start with two Origin Feats. They can both be magic initiate so long as the spell list is different between the two of them
Ty
Sage specifically gives you Magic Initiate (Wizard). The Human feature of Versatile would let you take Magic Initiate in a different class. You'd get 2 cantrips and a single level 1 spell from the Wizard List and 2 cantrips and a single level 1 spell from the other list.
Magic Initiate does not permanently give you access to those spell lists. Just for the spells that the feat gives you. You can’t get more when you level up
It wouldn't give you the full set of spell lists, just those 3 (per use of the feat).
Ok
And if I remember right, I get to use a level 1 spell from magic initiate for free once per long rest
Right?
Correct. One usage per set you chose from.
Oh yeah, this is gonna be epic
In your example, you'd have your full suite of cleric stuff; one use per long rest of your Wizard level 1 spell; one use per long rest of your Druid level 1 spell, and can use Cleric spell slots to repeat/upcat them.
The advantage would be getting to use Wisdom as your casting stat for all.
It probably loses some punch as you go up in level. And you sacrifice focus for it.
Focus?
It's a strong early game strategy, but might fall off at later levels, compared to some other feats
Focus on improving at your "cleric stuff", so to speak.
There's nothing "wrong" with it.
Clerics make very good healers by default. Same when it comes to support spells.
Guys I’m going to sound really really stupid, dnd seems so cool to me but I have no idea how to play or where to get started. Is there anyone who’d be able to help me figure things out?

Hey guys I don't really know what to say but I've never played DND but my dad and his friends used to play and it's always interested me but I've never had anyone to learn to play. I've recently taken a HUGE liking towards Baldur's Gate 3 but that's the most I know about anything like DND.

hello there lads
ı wanted to learn dnd for a whıle now but ı dont know where to start or what to do
ı would be greatfull ıf any gave me some tips or tricks on where to start or what to do
Hi and welcome! The #learn-to-play channel has lots of advice and great resources for getting your head around the basic rules. If you have any questions as you go or anything you'd like cleared up before you start feel free to post them here
I believe there IS text in the rules that I saw that indicates that features like this can add THOSE specific spells to your characters spell list which can be important in some cases for sure if you want to scribe scrolls of those spells or something later and that feature requires you to have them in your spell list.
ok
In the case of magic initiate I believe the spells you choose along with it are added specifically to your spell list and now you do have a spell list though it may only be 2 cantrips and 1 spell or whatever depending on race/class selection. (ask in rules someone will give you more info probably and a reference)
Honestly for anyone looking to learn how to play I suggest looking for a new player friendly campaign. Personally I think that's the best way to learn as you're taught the information and then you witness it being applied in real time vs just reading something and not really understanding it. (This does not mean don't read the rules and review on your time though never bog down others because you don't know what you're doing.)
Hello fellow noobs. Obviously I have a million questions, but from what I know the best way to learn is to do it. I've already learned sm from creating a character on roll20. And by far is watching others play. I've been a sports guy and am now really diving into my nerdy pleasures, Barstool has a DnD segment that is hilarious and a good showing of how to play lighthearted. My main struggle has got to be that I want to just play, but if I want to get going irl with friends I'm gonna have to be DM. Hoping to find a friendly group to get going online. Now, super silly little question, does it have to be ya know "dungeons" and "dragons". Why not "Starships" and "Aliens" ? I really jumped on some campaign ideas to "homebrew" and the only issue would be how standardize the mobs and monsters.

Yeah nah it definitely doesn't have to be dungeons and dragons. I personally have had experience playing in both industrial-revolution, modern and cyberpunk settings using 5e as a base (although a fair amount of homebrew is being used in the cyberpunk campaign)
There will almost always be some issues that will need to be overcome with homebrew the further you stray from the Epic Fantasy genre in your D&D games, but to say it can't be done would be wrong imo.
As long as you keep the core idea of the classes, magic, and the 'dungeons' (aka a series of connected rooms filled with social, exploration, and combat encounters) you're alright
OK cool thanks. Yeah that sounds pretty fun doing diff timelines. From what I've heard, the rules can be whatever I want, but they need so be consistent and "set" for every player the whole game. Just about having a story and keeping it going.
Sorry, those three different settings arent the same campaign. Although that would be pretty wild
The one piece of advice I'd give for this kind of thing is to keep it simple to start of with. DM a few standard fantasy adventures to get a sense of how D&D is designed to be played and then start modifying things when you get a good grasp on the system
If you do go changing things, never get rid of magic/spellcasting. It's a rabbit hole of homebrew I've never seen a good solution to.
Hello, Im new to the game, I have friends that play irl but i cant get a seat in there game cause there in the middle of a campaign, ive observerved many games, i bought the handbook and a die set, Id like to play online with people, but im fairly new, so i found this server hoping to find a group to play with, feel free to dm me! can someone help me with a character sheet? It said to ask this channel
What specifically do you need help with?
Have you read the free basic rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
There's a section in there that explains the steps to building a character.
Okay thank you so much! this is so confusing at first lol
do they vc or text
i live in southeast asia soo finding people here that like dnd is very very hard
I have always found naming a character the hardest part of anything involving character creation
i mean i dont actually know how to play
i hust got into this stuff
very confusing
#learn-to-play and check the pinned messages in this channel
ok
Anyone else have struggle naming characters or is it just me
Finna just call a character bob
ngl i would love to play in a vc dnd group but the only difficulty is my age. im like 15, most people here i think are 17+?
Bobius XD
And don't feel like you have to know everything.
Most important thing to learn is:
- How to make a character
- Core game mechanics (D20 test rolls, skill checks, attack rolls, saving throws, the different dice used)
- Have fun! It's a game.
Nah you know what I might do I might go back to my Elden ring and Skyrim characters because I gave them decent names
There we go I found my old dark elf character

Don’t we all
Quick question
Is it possible to
Create a eldritch being who can like 3 shot a tarasque 😁?
Along with them having reality bending abilities
Not even warlock?
Hmm another fun concept I had was
A artificer with the ability to create nearly anything from it's most basic materials including a
Pocket dimension they have complete control over
Which I did research on and is technically possible
If
Oh
Mk well continuing
what's a role that you would recommend for a new player?
all of what you’re referring to is homebrew
I used wish:) I could modify this one 8 th lv spell
tysm!
There's something wrong with me don't question it
some people do homebrew stuff but it’s usually w dm guidance
🙂
That's not what I'm talking about or at least not y I said that
Name one other person u know who wants to be the best eldritch being there is with the goal of two shotting a tarasque by myself
In no shape way or form is it possible
Unless I make it possible
Thru home brew
Are a paladin annoying since they have to follow a certain set of rules or are there more oaths that are more for morally grayish individuals
u can have morally grey paladins for sure
Sound so does it depend on oaths
i would say so yeah
Can a oathbreaker do radiant damage since it is a good damage type
K
Oathbreakers don’t have to be evil since they could’ve broke their oaths for somewhat good reasons some oaths can be constricting
So thanks for the idea mate didn’t even know you could start off with a oathbreaker
so RAW oathbreakers have to be evil
just check with ur DM because some may care
personally i think grey oathkeepers are badass
Yeah it would depend on the DM wouldn’t it I’m sure I could find one eventually once I finish these characters
yeah im sure most wont mind
Evil gods can also have “evil” radiant damage and not necrotic damage
I have a question, would it be possible to use a group of characters (ex, a small group of really small gnomes, a pack of avali, four roombas, etc) and control then as one character?
Generally no. You only have 1 character in a game
You could ask the DM, but there are several problems with having multiple characters as a player
Anyone know where someone new to dnd can find a group that welcomes new people?
I have been looking through all the LFP threads and they seem to be full and dont state if new players are welcome.
is fire damage just damage categorized under a fire attribute or does it have any special things about it like setting the enemy on fire if they are hit by fire damage?
and are enemies able to have weaknesses/resistances to specific types of damage? if so, how does that work?
I can’t post in the #looking-for-dm 🙈
you need to use the /looking-for dm command
I am not able to type anything in the channel
in any other channel
Oh, it does not need to be in that specific channel?
no im pretty sure it just makes a post for you once you use it
just fill out the form
all good 👍
Does anyone mind playing a campaign with me? I’m just a player not a dungeon master and I’m just starting off.
Yep just found that out lol
for the echo knight subclass, does the echo act as its own character or just a copy of me? like if i am one handing a sword + shield combo, i deal 1d8 damage. am i able to make my echo unequip the shield to do 1d10 damage or no?
No. The echo is - like the name suggests - a magical echo of you. It is not actually you. The feature only does what it says it does.
Also a better question for #dnd-rules or #character-discussion
is the paladin fighting style only available to be chosen on level 2? so if i choose blessed warrior i lose the option completely?
This channel is for new to D&D folks to get started and learn the core game rules and mechanics. But to answer your question, and assuming we're referring to the 2024 updates, at level 2 a paladin can select a fighting style.
yes hence im just double checking
is the fighting style only able to be chosen at level 2
Correct - that is the level at which a paladin can pick a fighting style.
so if i choose blessed warrior i no longer have the option to choose fighting style at any other levels
ok got it
If the spell, attack or feature that causes the fire damage has the potential to ignite material, it will say so in the description.
Creatures may have resistance or vulnerability to specific damage types. This causes the damage to be halved or doubled. More here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Resistance
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Vulnerability
so did i read correct? you can play D&D on roll20 solo? how does that work? would love to try it and maybe get use to things
That may be more of a rules question, but if it gives you the fighting style feature, you may be able to pick those feats at other ASI levels (for 2024. 2014 was definitely only level 2). It would depend on exact wording.
Not really. You can set up character sheets for yourself while having DM permissions, but it’s not the same as playing solo nor is there a super solid way to do so using 5e. The closest thing would be the game Baldur’s Gate 3, but there’s enough rule changes to make it not truly 5e. If you wanted to dip your toes into playing with a group without making a big commitment I’d look into finding beginner-oriented one-shots.
ty! i have always wanted to try BG3
?complexity
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Still working on which bot commands have the "new" part and which ones don't.
Yeah we need to update the FAQ and list these for community use…
Isn't there a bot command to see the available tags? Though I forget that command too
?tags new

Also, just because it might be a server setting things, I also find that session zero channels don't appear for me in the Channels and Roles section. I have to show all channels to see it.
There we go
Which might be why some people have trouble finding those
I think that may just be Discord being Discord…
It's been true for me across multiple updates and versions but entirely possible
They're in id:guide at the top of the channel list.
For whatever reason, Discord doesn't let you add Server Guide channels directly to the channel list.
Good to know. Thanks.
Hi everyone! So I'll be starting Tomb of Annihilation as a player. All are DM told us so far is that there is a || Death Curse which affects ressurection. || To anyone that has played this campaign, ||is the "speak with the dead" spell affected by this, in particular for anyone that dies after the curse appears||? I would google it but I'm trying to avoid any spoilers.😅
regarding your D&D beyond character sheet...when you are in a game..and lets say, something happens and you loose points in a certain trait due to what ever...do you yourself have to change it? and does it say that way untill something happens to change it again? good or bad... i hope i explanied that correct..is that how your character "levels"?
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at level 1 and advances in level by adventuring. With each new level, characters acquire new capabilities that equip them to handle greater challenges.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. As they overcome challenges and complete adventures, characters earn Experience Points (XP), which are awarded by the Dungeon Master. The Character Advancement table lists the XP you need to advance to a level
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
Your DM might start your group’s characters at a level higher than 1. A DM can also use feats as a form of advancement after characters reach level 20 to provide greater power to characters who have no more levels to gain.
That wasn't as helpful as I thought it'd be.
Yes, you would make any changes to the character sheet yourself, and those changes would remain until you make new changes.
oh ok makes so much more sense..
For what it's worth, losing anything but hit points or other refreshable resources pretty much doesn't happen in contemporary editions.
are there any certian games, like roll20, foundry etc that will do that automaticity?
oh ok..ty!
In older editions (through 3.X), losing a level or attribute points was a pretty common effect of being attacked by certain kinds of undead.
I don't think any platform automates character sheets in the way you're asking.

Alright I will try that then you very much

All of it seems a little over stimulating at first but hopefully I can find my first group 😁😁
That's common with a new experience, but you don't need to be an expert right away. And finding a group is one of the more challenging parts of the hobby, just because aligning schedules for four or five people is not an easy thing.
And gets harder as people become "real adults"
how do people play DnD online? Iv got to do a oneshot to test my mettle
Do you mean what tools get used, or how do they find groups?
Tools used
What is the best way to play a monk?
ik he focus on melee.
but i have a lot of dagges
daggers*
High Dexterity and high wisdom. Then get in there and do some cool attacks!
and i wanna follow the way of astral
Monks have a class feature that lets their unarmed strike do as much or more damage than a dagger, even out of the gate.
The BEST way to play a monk is . . . YOUR way. For you, anyway.
Hey so I used to not have any interest in dnd but after watching a video about someone creating a character that's every single race I have gained an interest for it
If anyone wants to know this was the video
Well I can't send the video as my account isn't 30minutes old
Offhand, that "every race" description sounds a lot like heavy homebrew.
Unfortunately, a character in DnD can only have one race.
I will return in approximately 30 minutes to send the video brb
You may have meant every single class instead of every single race
It's certainly a very funny concept, but not something I'd ever recommend to any new player.
I have a question, I wanted to click the "looking for DM" button but it gave me a promt. If I click "submit" will it automatically go to the subserver it needs to be in? I can't post in the official "Looking for DM" channel so Im pretty confused
Whatever command you clicked on, it'll go to the associated channel once you fill out the bot form and submit it.
so when I click the button to post itll automatically go to the right server?
Okay, thank you
I thought I'd be writing in the wrong thing and get punished or something
I have a question
If a book introduces new spells can I use the spells even if I don't own the book
There's no legal or rules requirement that says you must own a book to be able to use content from it. As long as you have a legal means of accesses the book and knowing what's inside, then you are free to do whatever you wish with that information.
Plenty of us play with content from books we don't own, because maybe a friend lent us the book, or we barrowed it from the library, or we use D&D Beyond's content sharing features.
The rule books for D&D are just like any other books. You just need a way to read it. The information that's inside is your to do whatever you want with
Well, to an extent anyways.
The DM typically decides what content is/isn't allowed in the game, though, so just because you have access to it doesn't mean it'll be incorporated.
That’s also true
Like Razorwing said, check with the GM for the game.

Sorta done with my character sheet, can someone confirm if my character is alright
(I'm using a combination of 2024 rules, probably a little bit of 2014, and some stuff from other books)
#character-discussion would be the spot!
Ok thx
there is a joke about how many daggers i have. Hhhh. Im gonna focus on that. Thx
Fair. And I think the current phrasing allows it to be "use the dagger, get the increased damage anyway."
Where do you start to learn DND?

Hiya 👋 Im still kinda new and was trying to understand something about "Ability Score Improvement"
When you level up and get it, does the bonus go into the base stats of a rolled (15) strength or does it go into the base modifier (of 15) that gives it a +2?
You add the points to an ability score (the 15 in your example) which is then used to calculate the modifier (which is +1 for every two points in the ability score up to a maximum ability score of 20)
Thank you so much
hello, is there anyone active willing to help me create a level four character sheet?
Hey all! Please point me in the direction of the right channel if this isn't it, but me and another person who are both very new to DnD are looking for a smallish group (preferably of other new players) and DM to start a homebrew (? not completely set on this, open to suggestion!) game, anyone interested?? Thanks!!
